The Naples area is home to 30 miles of whitesand shoreline, and each beach is its own unique slice of paradise. In the original 1888 brochure promoting Naples as a new resort destination, “surf bathing” in the warm waters along the gently sloping shoreline of the Gulf of Mexico was touted as a “healthful” year-round pursuit. (Gulf temperatures generally range from 68° Fahrenheit in early February to 88° in early August.) 22

Beach Guide Tigertail Beach

Tigertail Beach is the jewel among the smooth, wide beaches along Marco Island’s western shore. On the island’s north end, the pristine beach can be accessed by five boardwalks though a mangrove forest. Across the tidal bay is Sand Dollar Island, a popular nesting area for a wide variety of birds. The beach is known for its abundance of shells, sand dollars, and as a bird migration superhighway. Naples Pier

For 130 years, the Naples Pier has been the pulse of Naples Beach. This historic landmark is an ideal place to stroll, lounge, fish, boogie-board, and wade. The Pier hosts restrooms, showers, and the popular Cosmos, selling homemade specialty pizza, Italian subs, fresh salads, gelato, souvenirs, and fishing equipment. Metered parking is located nearby, with additional parking and access points along Gulf Shore Boulevard. (Location: West end of 12 Avenue South, Naples)

All parking spaces require a payment or a valid beach parking permit. Full-time residents and property taxpayers can park free with a city or county beach parking permit. (Any disability permit holder may park at any space without payment.) Without a permit, beachgoers should use metered parking spaces or pay stations.

Secluded and relaxing, the park boasts of one of the most unspoiled beaches in the United States. Get your cameras ready, because natural wildlife abounds. Along the nature trails and open waters, expect to spot resident and migratory birds, tortoises, dolphins, and more. The park’s waters are perfect for fishing and shelling. Outside of the pass, calm surf and shallow water make this a popular sunbathing spot. Fees: $6 per vehicle (Location: 11135 Gulfshore Drive, Naples)

Barefoot Beach

One of the last undeveloped barrier islands in Southwest Florida, Barefoot Beach is regularly rated among the country’s best beaches. The 342-acre preserve may just be the region’s most perfect pairing of natural beauty and great amenities. More than a mile of sugary sands made Barefoot Beach famous. But there’s much more to see and do. The park is home to gopher tortoises, sea turtle nesting grounds, natural sabal palm and gumbo-limbo groves, plus there is a mile-long nature trail and pavilions where you can gather with family and friends. Between the park and the Barefoot Beach access point, there are nearly 500 spaces. (Location: 505 Barefoot Beach Blvd., Naples)

Blue Zones: Embracing the

Power9 BY SEBASTIEN SAITTA, BLUE ZONES PROJECT SWFL

THE PATH TO WELL-BEING IS A MARATHON, NOT A SPRINT NCH Healthcare System knew this concept when it sponsored and introduced Blue Zones Project to Southwest Florida in 2015 with the goal of decreasing chronic disease and helping residents live longer, healthier, and happier lives. Now in its seventh year, Blue Zones Project has impacted the well-being of more than 275,000 individuals and 760 organizations throughout Collier County and southern Lee County. After Blue Zones Project was launched, well-being in the Naples-ImmokaleeMarco area ranked the healthiest place in the nation for four consecutive years, per Gallup well-being data. This is a big jump considering, just nine years ago, Gallup ranked this area seventy-third in the nation for well-being. If you’re hearing about it for the first

time, Blue Zones Project Southwest Florida is a community initiative that works with individuals, homeowners’ associations, faith-based organizations, restaurants, grocery stores, schools, and businesses to help make healthy choices easier. The idea is to implement best practices and encourage small changes in the environment that have a profound effect on well-being over time. This is done using National Geographic Society research that found nine commonalities among people around the world who live the longest and healthiest lives. These longevity hotspots are known as Blue Zones and the principles they follow are dubbed the “Power 9.” Here are the Power 9, and an example of how they are playing out in real-time in the community:

2

PURPOSE People who have purpose—a sense of their gifts and strengths that they regularly utilize—tend to live about seven years longer than those who do not. This is typically exercised through volunteering for a cause that is important to you, at church, or your children’s school. There are hundreds of nonprofits in Collier County. Here is a good place to start your search: volunteercollier.com. Blue Zones Project also facilitates workshops to help people define their sense of purpose.

MOVE NATURALLY The longest-lived people in the world don’t spend their time exercising in a gym. Instead, they simply move more within their natural environment. This includes activities like walking, gardening, swimming, or biking. Southwest Florida offers ample opportunity for these activities through its many parks, trials, and beaches.

5 DOWNSHIFT

3

Long-term stress raises cortisol levels that can cause inflammation and a host of other health problems. Downshift techniques to help combat stress and anxiety include meditation, tai chi, yoga, and spending more time in nature. Find programs through local parks, recreational facilities, private studios, and events such as Donation Yoga Naples (donationyoganaples.com). There are endless opportunities for spending time in nature at a beach or park. See “Where the Wild Things Are” on page 34 to get started.

80 PERCENT RULE

4

“Hara hachi bu!” The longestlived people in Okinawa, Japan, use this term to remind themselves to stop eating when their stomachs are 80 percent full. The 20 percent gap between not being hungry and feeling full could be the difference between maintaining proper weight or gaining it. Take time to eat more slowly and eat in the company of family or friends to allow for conversation between bites.

7

BELONG

Belonging to a faith-based community has many benefits that include a sense of peace, support, and acceptance. Blue Zones Project Southwest Florida works with nearly 40 faith-based organizations in the community to help make healthy choices easier for their congregations.

8

FAMILY FIRST Maintaining good family relationships and ensuring that family comes first can make us feel safe and loved, and provides a sense of belonging. This reduces stress and elevates the feel-good chemicals in our brain that lead to healthier outcomes and a strong sense of well-being.

Blue Zones Project provides access to free Power 9 tools and resources through the Sharecare online platform to help power community well-being. Start with the RealAge health assessment. Each person—no matter where they are in their health journey—is provided a customized wellbeing plan, and evidence-based programs to help you live your best (and youngest) life.

028-HEALTH_WELLNESS-1121.indd 29

PLANT SLANT

Loading your plate with plantbased foods has been proven to add years to your life. A recent study by JAMA Internal Medicine found that shifting three percent of caloric intake from animal to plant protein corresponded with a 10 percent decrease in death from any cause. Blue Zones Project works with local restaurants to add more healthy options to their menus. Find a list of Blue Zones Project-approved restaurants: southwestflorida.bluezonesproject.com. .

WINE WITH FRIENDS @ 5

6

People in all Blue Zones (except Adventists) drink alcohol moderately and regularly do so with friends (accompanied with food). In Sardinia, Italy, a Blue Zone, residents are famous for their daily consumption of a regional red wine called cannonau that has a high polyphenol content linked to heart health.

9

RIGHT TRIBE

Surrounding yourself with people that practice healthy behaviors will increase the likelihood of you doing the same. You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. If you spend time with people who engage in unhealthy behaviors, chances are, you will, too. Participate in a Blue Zones Project walking or a plant-based potluck group. In Japan, spending time with your tribe on a positive endeavor is called a moai (“meeting for a common purpose”).

Meet the

Natives LAND, SEA, OR AIR: GET TO KNOW SOME OF OUR “WILD” NEIGHBORS BY CONSERVANCY OF SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

Newcomers often wonder about the whimsical, pouchbilled birds perched on local fishing piers or large nests teetering atop utility poles. The Sunshine State is literally teeming with terrestrial, aquatic, and avian wildlife. More than 130 native species of animals are threatened or endangered in Florida—and many make their home in Southwest Florida. Whether they’re outgoing or shy, get to know a few of your neighbors’ “cool factors.”

Florida Panther Scientific name Puma concolor coryi Adult size: 7 to 8 feet from the nose to tail tip Weight: 100 to 160 pounds Lifespan: 12 to 15 years Habitat: Confined to Sout west Florida’s pinelands, hardwood hammocks, and mixed swamp forests Diet: Deer, wild hogs, raccoons, armadillos, snakes, and even alligators Status: Endangered, with an estimated 120 to 230 panthers in Florida Cool factor: Panthers are good swimmers and have a keen sense of smell and 130-degree field of vision

Osprey Scientific name: Pandion haliaetus Adult size: 2 feet with a 6-foot wingspan

Be a good

Neighbor WE ALL PLAY A PART IN MAKING SURE THESE NATIVES REMAIN HAPPY AND HEALTHY. WHETHER YOU ARE A LONG-TIME RESIDENT OR FIRST-TIME VISITOR, HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR BEING A GOOD NEIGHBOR. LEAVE NOTHING BUT FOOTPRINTS. A major cause of harm to wildlife is plastic pollution. Bottle caps, ribbons, balloons, and monofilament fishi line kill or maim birds, sea turtles, and marine mammals. (More than 700 pelicans die each year in Florida from entanglement in fishing gea .) Use less plastic and clean up litter.

and on the water to avoid collisions with wildlife.

DON’T FEED WILDLIFE. This poses a threat to humans, domestic animals, and the wildlife being fed. Feeding pelicans is prohibited by law.

TAKE NOTHING BUT PICTURES. Florida has strict laws that prohibit the capturing, harming, or harassment of Florida’s native species, including live shells, sea stars, urchins, and sand dollars.

This habitat is high in elevation, at least for this region. A few inches in elevation makes a big difference for pine forests—high and dry areas dominated by slash pine. The trees get their name from early settlers who “slashed” the bark of the pines and collected the sap to make turpentine and rosins.

Hardwood Hammocks

Cypress Swamps

3

These swamps experience seasonal changes in water levels that fluctuate during wet and dry months. Elevations determine hydroperiods—how long soils are saturated or flooded. Many species have adapted to live in this variable habitat, such as the predominant cypress tree. Their knees (above-ground extensions of their roots) and their buttresses (wide, fluted bases) provide stability and increase surface area for gas exchange. Cypress trees are deciduous conifers; they lose all their needles in the fall and winter.

Tropical hardwood hammocks are found along both coasts of South Florida, and throughout the Everglades and Florida Keys. Hammocks are also called “tree islands” because they rise from wet, low-lying areas. Oaks, sweetgum, hickories—more than 120 species of tropical plants—provide cool and shady refuge for deer and other wildlife during hot summer months.

DENNIS GOODMAN

To newcomers, Southwest Florida’s topography might seem flat and unchanging, but don’t let its subtleties fool you. Changes in elevation coupled with rainfall create distinct habitats that are home to a web of life for native wildlife, birds, insects, plants and trees, fish, and reptiles. You’re probably familiar with the beaches, so here’s a primer on the other natural habitats you will encounter as you explore these lands.

Mangroves play a unique and important role in Southwest Florida’s ecosystem. Red mangroves ring coastal estuaries. Their intricate root systems act as a nursery for many small fish, crustaceans, shellfish, and other marine life during their earliest stages of life. They also provide shelter and nutrients for wading birds and land creatures and protect the coastline from storm-driven waves.

Sloughs (pronounced SLOOs) are deep marsh habitats that are slow-moving paths of freshwater utilized by many species, sometimes as a travel corridor. This environment is active with wildlife because it remains wet year-round. Sloughs shed floodwaters and improve the quality of the water as it makes its way into the estuaries in the Gulf of Mexico and Florida Bay.

THERE ARE NO OTHER EVERGLADES IN THE WORLD. THEY ARE, THEY HAVE ALWAYS BEEN, ONE OF THE UNIQUE REGIONS OF THE EARTH; REMOTE, NEVER WHOLLY KNOWN. NOTHING ANYWHERE ELSE IS LIKE THEM.” ——Marjory Stoneman Douglas

Worlds Apart: The Everglades region—a vast, nearly flat, seabed that was submerged at the end of the last Ice Age—is so unique that it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. Why? The greater Everglades region: ○ Is the largest subtropical wilderness reserve on the North American continent. ○ Contains the largest mangrove ecosystem in the Western Hemisphere and the largest continuous stand of

sawgrass prairie. ○ Is the most significant breeding ground for wading birds in North America, and a major corridor for migration. ○ Is home to more than 2,000 species of plants and animals, including more than 20 rare, endangered, and threatened species. ○ Protects inland communities against hurricanes. ○ Provides drinking water for nine million people in South Florida.

Get Involved If you have a passion for protecting wild spaces and water quality in the region, there are a number of nonprofits you can join or volunteer with— whether you want to get your hands dirty or help out in other ways. Here is a good place to start:

David Ahmad quit his engineering job to launch The Coldest Water out of his one-car garage in 2015. By 2021, sales had gone global, operations moved to a new warehouse, a retail store at Coastland Center opened, and the company was named among Inc.'s 500 fastest-growing companies in the nation.

HOPEFULLY, WE DO HAVE A LASTING IMPACT ON NAPLES AS A POSITIVE BRAND.” —David Ahmad, founder, The Coldest Water

Taking a Leap

As a kid, David Ahmad always loved inventing new things, better things. In his early adulthood, Ahmad capitalized on the same trait he says his parents must have possessed to make the leap to immigrate to the United States. “I think it’s a big risk to be the first generation to travel to the U.S. and leave your parents,” says Ahmad, founder of Naples-based water bottle and related accessories business The Coldest Water. One of three engineering sons of two engineering parents, Ahmad has turned that boldness into a growing international operation with products in national chains and satisfying consumer approval. Launched with every penny he had—$14,000 from a previous venture—and financed strictly from operational revenues, The Coldest Water already is outgrowing its new, 15,000-square-foot warehouse and opened a retail store in Coastland Center mall in April 2021. This all came about after Ahmad had surveyed the highly competitive water bottle market a half-dozen years ago and was stunned that no one had seized on what he saw as lacking. “What do people want the most when they drink water? For Americans, it’s cold water,” says Ahmad, who uses the persona David Stark for most online publicity. “All these brands don’t tell you anything about their goal for the customer,” he explains. A boot-strapped, madcap, and often comical series of growing pains

042_STARTUP_1121.indd 43

later, The Coldest Water now ships thousands of bottles and other products worldwide each month—with the tag "Designed in Naples, Florida" on their undersides. “Hopefully, we do have a lasting impact on Naples as a positive brand,” Ahmad says. As many successful local startups have shown, The Coldest Water has plenty of company in that market. NAPLES ON THE GULF 2022

IF YOU ARE GOING TO RAISE NEW CAPITAL FOR A FINANCIAL FIRM, THIS IS A GREAT PLACE TO DO IT. —Tyler Hardt, owner, Pelican Bay Capital Management

A Wealth Capital

When it came time to open his own investment firm several years ago, Tyler Hardt and his family naturally were drawn to his hometown’s superb quality of life. But Hardt, who has rapidly grown Pelican Bay Capital Management since its launch in Naples in early 2019, also knew the economic opportunities that abound here, too. “There’s a significant amount of money here,” says Hardt, who spent nine years as an equity analyst in Atlanta after earning his master’s degree in finance with honors from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 2009. “If you are going to raise new capital for a financial firm, this is a great place to do it.” With two-school aged children, Hardt and his wife considered Austin, Texas, staying in Atlanta, or establishing roots elsewhere. The winning choice quickly paid dividends beyond providing “a place where it felt safe and happy and healthy for everybody.” In a 12-month period ending in August 2021, Hardt says his firm grew its assets under management from $7 million to $106 million. A wealth of former executives and savvy investors also make great partners with whom he shares a strong drive for angel investing. “This is a great place to do it because we can raise money very quickly,” he says. “There’s just a huge, untapped knowledge base of retirees here who were executives in their former lives.” There’s no shortage of aspiring, young business owners to invest in, as well. “There’s a lot of talented entrepreneurs here,” Hardt says. “A lot of them are just lacking experience or guidance in raising capital or business strategy.” 44

Secret Sauce

Deomattie “Reshma” Tannassee beams with joy when thinking of the check she got for selling the first case of her homegrown, homemade hot sauce for $39 to Wynn's Market in Naples. A few years later, she’s even more excited about moving her operations into a new facility that Collier Enterprises has committed to building in Ave Maria to house several hundred employees for her burgeoning business, Carina’s Manufacturing. Named for Tannassee’s 7-year-old daughter, Carina’s has been operating out of the Florida Culinary Accelerator@Immokalee. It is where the native of Guyana has been turning the gift for flavors, spices, and sauces she learned from her grandmother into a popular growing product line— all by hand. She has expanded into making private-label food products locally for Wynn’s, Seed to Table, and JW Marriott, and is working with the nonprofit entrepreneurial program for students, Taste of Immokalee, with packaging and product development. “I never thought I would be able to do all this from the Culinary Accelerator,” says Tannassee, who now has seven full-time and 28 parttime employees. “I’m still surprised. I told someone, ‘Just pinch me.’”

“ Grand opening of second Narrative Coffee Roasters location on Central Avenue

THE FACT THAT WE’VE HAD SO MANY PEOPLE CONTINUE TO SUPPORT US REALLY MEANT WE WERE DOING THE RIGHT THING. —William Diaz-Garcia, co-owner, Narrative Coffee Roasters

Partners William Diaz-Garcia and Caleb MacPherson

A dedicated facility will allow Carina’s to significantly expand its offerings to current and potential future clients, including giants Sysco Foods and Cheney Brothers, while diversifying a local economy mostly missing the important stage between the region’s extensive agricultural and foodservice markets. “I think this will be a great job creator, and a great signal to other companies to come to the area,” says Ahmed El, program manager of the Florida Culinary Accelerator@Immokalee. “If Reshma—who started with just herself and a pot—can be successful with the limited resources she had, just imagine someone who is already established. There’s much more that can be done.”

They set about opening Narrative Coffee Roasters at Mercato in June 2020 and added a second location on Central Avenue in July 2021. The business has done so well that they already have plans to expand the roasting operation and add shops along Florida’s West Coast. “To open a coffee shop in the middle of COVID is a feat in itself,” Diaz-Garcia says. “The fact that we’ve had so many people continue to support us really meant we were doing the right thing. The second one is doing great, and we haven’t even hit season yet.” Originally launched by MacPherson as a wholesale operation, Narrative Coffee Roasters has built back that part of the business after COVID-19 derailed most of his sales. Buyers of his seasonal, single-origin roasts include other area coffee shops. Narrative also recently expanded its cold brew options to include cans in the name of recognizing and filling a market need. “Caleb looks and is the part. He breathes coffee. It is his absolute passion,” says Diaz-Garcia, whose family operated a coffee roaster in Miami in the 1960s and ‘70s before selling it to Smucker’s. “My passion was to really get a company like that up and off the ground because I wanted to be in the coffee industry. The one thing my family never did was to have a coffee shop.” roasting facility

Filling a Need

Caleb MacPherson, a Canadian who sports a beard and tattoos, already had premium coffee-making talent. When Naples attorney William Diaz-Garcia II partnered with him several years ago, they had the right ingredients to fill what both saw as a big hole in the Naples marketplace. The plan: To open a neighborhood shop that serves specialty coffees and does its own roasting, too.

A HealthMe dashboard displays pricing for health care treatments

Medical Self-Pay

Dr. Michael Havig came up with the idea for HealthMe, an online pricing marketplace that connects doctors and patients in the evergrowing self-pay medical world. The Naples orthopedic surgeon has logged countless hours since its launch in late 2018 explaining its relative simplicity to those who are frustrated by the lack of pricing transparency—and ultimately, access to care—in the insurancedominated health care industry. But Havig is the first to admit the award-winning service might not be where it is—in the process of converting more than 1,600 practices in its pipeline to several hundred active users by the end of 2021—without considerable support from local advisers and business incubators. These include the former Naples Accelerator, where HealthMe was headquartered until recently; the FGCU Daveler & Kauanui School of Entrepreneurship; and Fusion Pointe, a nonprofit organization offering vital resources to startups. “There’s all these people trying to promote the startup ecosystem here, and doing a pretty good job at it,” Havig says. “They want to see things grow.” Given many health-care trends, including growing legal and consumer demands for greater pricing transparency to match the widening number of people and small businesses not financially able or willing to go through insurers, that’s good news when it comes to providing needed care. HealthMe, actively expanding its marketplace from orthopedic practices to other specialties, increases revenue by bringing in self-pay patients often previously excluded from the process. And it makes office flows more efficient by streamlining direct-pay pricing and billing in advance. “What we hear from a lot of practices is, ‘We’ve been wanting to do this and trying to figure it out. We just didn’t know how,’” Havig says. “Now we have that process.” 46

QUALITY OF LIFE

WHAT MAKES NAPLES A DESIRABLE PLACE TO LIVE AND WORK?

Naples strikes a rare balance of breathtaking beauty, a sense of purpose and ambition, a deep appreciation of what we have, and a drive to help others. I’ve lived in other Florida cities, but Naples possesses a beautiful community culture that’s impossible to beat. Whether you’re looking to be social or recharge, we truly have something for everyone.” —Jen Clark, vice president, SWFL Music Education Center

“Naples has it all. From stunning beaches to an impressive dining scene, there is truly something for everyone. There is no shortage of activities, regardless of your interests: golfing, fishing, shopping, art galleries, and even a surprisingly great nightlife. In addition to all of this, we are so lucky to have a crime rate almost 90 percent lower than the Florida average, beautiful sunshine year-round, access to quality health care, and a very strong philanthropic network.” —Alyssa Haney, marketing specialist, First Florida Integrity Bank

042_STARTUP_1121.indd 47

When we first moved to Florida at the end of 2014, life in Collier could not have been more different than living in Maryland. As a family with young children, one of the concerns and priorities that we had was to find and connect with other families, as well as ensuring our children had activities for their age. Once we moved here and visited other areas of the central and south Florida region (from Orlando down to Miami), we found that Naples’ smalltown feel with access to impressive large-scale happenings was a reason to live here.” —Kevin Yue, P.E., senior project manager, Environmental Risk Management

Naples is a very special place to call home. Its unique diversity of culture, landscape, opportunities, and resources all contribute to quality of life. With an excellent education system and strong philanthropic community that believes in supporting and standing up gaps in services, Naples is only getting better with time!” —Anne Frazier, senior director of development, Lee Health Foundation

What really makes Naples unique are the people. They are friendly, willing to assist and care about the community they live in. We still have that small-town feeling and that is priceless.”—Patrick D. O’Connor, sales associate and certified relocation specialist, Premier Sotheby’s International Realty, and director at the Greater Naples Chamber.

THE PARADISE COAST SPORTS COMPLEX—ONE OF THE LARGEST IN THE NATION—IS A WORLD-CLASS SPORTS AND CULTURAL VENUE

The Factory fitness pavillion at the Paradise Coast Sports Complex

The 180-acre complex in East Naples will ultimately feature seven volleyball courts and 21 synthetic athletic fields: 10 Olympic fields for soccer, football, and lacrosse; six baseball diamonds; and five softball/youth baseball diamonds. Being built in four phases, construction is expected to be complete by late 2023. It’s one of the largest sports complexes in the United States. “It’s The Ritz-Carlton of sports venues. We also focus on guest experiences, kind of like going to Disney,” says Paradise Coast Sports Complex Business Development Manager Jeff Walters. “I have to pry peoples’ jaws off the floors when they visit for the first time.” Already in place are the 3,500-seat stadium with private suites and party decks, great lawn, amphitheater with a 32-foot-wide, doublesided digital video board, and The Cove Beer & Wine Bar. Community events,concerts, holiday, food, arts, and beer festivals, and drive-in

Sports and recreation are in high demand in Collier County for adults and youth alike, so county officials are working aggressively to create more facilities. One of these gems is the $100 million Paradise Coast Sports Complex—a world-class facility designed to fulfill the needs of local and out-of-town athletes, with plenty of amenities to please the non-sporty types, too. 60

Food trucks, cornhole, firepits, and a rock wall are some of the other unique amenities that make gatherings at The Cove and amphitheater a family affair. Local fitness buffs and sports enthusiasts enjoy the five multi-use athletic fields, mile-long lake trail with fitness bump-outs, the membership Factory fitness pavilion, and a volleyball court. The complex was planned to be enjoyed by residents during the week and draw out-of-town sports teams and tournaments on weekends. When it opened in July 2020, the complex debuted by hosting hundreds of middle and high school FBU Top Gun football players competing for regional and national recognition. Plans are underway for large concerts to be held at the stadium, which has a 10,000-person capacity. “It’s a gem for Collier County because it provides a place for locals and traveling sports teams to play tournaments, and it will function as a premier event venue for Southwest Florida,” says Walters. “County residents can take advantage of the Factory, great lawn, The Cove, and live entertainment on the weekends. It’s estimated that the park will have a $35 million impact in Collier County on an annual basis—maybe $40 million—so it’s a win-win.” The Paradise Coast Sports Complex is managed by Sports Force Parks. On the Ball With 90 golf courses, Collier County has long been known as the “Golf Capital of the World.” It boasts three annual professional golf tournaments and challenging professional holes set against panoramic scenery dotted with wildlife. But it might as well be known as the “Pickleball Capital of the World,” too. At public facilities and private clubhouses in gated communities, tennis facilities have been speedily renovated to incorporate pickleball play in response to its surge as the fastest-growing sport in the nation. East Naples Community Park—which has hosted the U.S. Open Pickleball Championships annually since its 2016 inception—is the hotspot. An ambitious renovation expanded its pickleball courts to 64, along with other upgrades. The next phases will add a 3,500-seat stadium, 1,000 parking spots, and welcome center with locker rooms and a pro shop (expected to open by spring 2022). The championships typically draw an estimated 2,100 visitors each April. Find your athletic bliss at Collier County’s 69 neighborhood, community, regional parks (collierparks.com), which offer a wide range of recreational options, wellness programs, summer camps, and family-friendly playgrounds and picnic pavilions. These are some of the main draws: East Naples Community Park: In addition to pickleball, it offers basketball, tennis, racquetball, softball, and soccer, and a .75-mile jogging trail Golden Gate Community Park: Youth softball and baseball, tennis, soccer/football, basketball, shuffleboard, bocce, fitness and nature trails, swimming pools North Collier Regional Park: Tournament

Naples Chamber

Community & Career

CONNECTOR AT THE GREATER NAPLES CHAMBER, ALL ROADS LEAD TO ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY

The Greater Naples Chamber’s mission of cultivating economic opportunity for all may sound like a lofty goal, but the chamber achieves it by advocating for business-friendly policies, connecting businesses to the resources they need to thrive, and nurturing talent to better prepare the regional workforce for generations to come. The chamber’s work has never been as vital as it is right now. When the COVID-19 pandemic reared its head, the chamber served as a connector between employers, government, and nonprofits on pandemic-related issues and resources. The chamber contacted hundreds of members, facilitated conversations between elected officials and employers, and continued to educate and inform employers about our community’s issues. These were ordinary acts in extraordinary times, ones that members and community leaders have come to expect from the Greater Naples Chamber. As the voice of business in Collier County, the chamber remains at the forefront of issues facing the region—including talent development, housing, and water quality. “We are focused on creating a better economy for the workforce of today and tomorrow,” says Michael Dalby, president and CEO of the Greater Naples Chamber. 62

To accomplish these goals, the Greater Naples Chamber: ○ Launched an initiative aimed at attracting remote workers to Collier County. As more and more businesses allowed remote work during the pandemic, the chamber began marketing the area as a haven for remote workers. If you can work from anywhere, why not work in paradise? ○ Hosted conversations, both in-person and virtual, with local, state, and federal lawmakers to advocate for a wide variety of issues, including workforce housing and workforce training, affecting the business community. ○ Partnered with local, regional, and statewide organizations on a variety of community initiatives, including efforts related to COVID-19 relief, economic de-

velopment, and community engagement. ○ Connected students to internships, informational interviews, and job shadowing experiences, providing them with a better understanding of careers available throughout Collier County and Southwest Florida. ○ Provided leadership and professional development opportunities to hundreds of Southwest Florida community leaders. ○ Served as a voice for its 1,200 members. “We have a talent-based agenda,” says Dalby. “Our goal is to make Collier County an attractive place for employers, workers, and visitors alike.” Learn more about the Greater Naples Chamber at napleschamber.org.

Passion

THE LEADERSHIP COLLIER FOUNDATION INSPIRES LOCAL BUSINESSPEOPLE, RISING YOUNG PROFESSIONALS, AND STUDENTS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE COMMUNITY

Whether you are a young professional, entrepreneur, or top executive, the Leadership Collier Foundation (LCF) programs help residents understand the community in ways they could not anticipate. Participants get an insider’s perspective of health care, law enforcement, the environment, education, local government, agriculture, and social services, walking away empowered with a deeper understanding of how the community functions and inspired to make a difference. LCF is a 501(c)(3) subsidiary of the Greater Naples Chamber, founded in 1989 to expose local business leaders to the community’s societal and economic challenges. Since then, LCF has expanded its umbrella to foster engagement in young professionals and high school students. Each year, about 100 new class members participate in its three programsLeadership Collier, Associate Leadership Collier, and Youth Leadership Collier. 64

Leadership Collier participants go behind the scenes to learn about successes and challenges Leadership Collier participants go behind the scenes to learn about successes and challenges at various places, from the operating room to the landfill, from a swamp to a school campus. Each year’s curriculum is modified to create a variety of experiences. “No one can understand everything that’s going on in their community,” says LCF Senior Director Amanda Beights. “There’s a vast difference between reading about education in our school system and hearing directly from our superintendent or the university president. So we provide exclusive experiences and in-depth conversations you wouldn’t have otherwise.”

Clockwise from top left: Leadership Collier Foundation Senior Director Amanda Beights and Kamela Patton, Ph.D., work on a Habitat for Humanity home; Collier County Public School students at the “Build my Future” career fair; Youth Leadership Collier class members learn about environmental issues; a Youth leadership collier graduate interns at Arthrex.

Each year, the 40 selected applicants who participate in Leadership Collier often choose a cause or issue to address as a class. Some topics they’ve tackled: building affordable housing with Habitat Collier, volunteering as poll workers, and spearheading a project to ensure underprivileged third graders had an educational outing at the beachthe first visit for the majority of them. A robust network of more than 2,000 LCF alumni feel more connected and engaged in Collier County. The vast majority serve on nonprofit boards and public advisory committees, elected officials, or mentors to underserved youth. “A light bulb goes off for every individual,” says Beights. “Now they understand how their business is a link in our community and how to plug themselves into roles they’re passionate about, and the work of the Greater Naples Chamber, to cultivate economic opportunity for all.” v There are several local opportunities for professionals to network, learn, socialize, and make an impact while growing their leadership skills. A Place in the

Sun EXPLORE ESTABLISHED NEIGHBORHOODS

Old Naples

For many visitors to Naples, it’s often love at first sight. Palm trees, white-sand beaches, the dazzling Gulf of Mexico, and the promise of a tropical lifestyle weave their magic. Family vacations, business conferences, and winter getaways become homebuying missions. For a year-round or seasonal nest, real estate opportunities are seemingly endless: gated communities with amenities rivaling plush resorts; beachfront mansions and cottages; low- and high-rise towers; historic neighborhoods; and even a new city. Whether you are a first-time buyer, relocating from a bustling metropolis, or looking to upgrade because of an expanding family or income, there are a range of home styles to fit your needs and budget. The question is: where? Get to know some of the area’s established communities.

AVE MARIA

Neighborhood Guide AQUALANE SHORES A community of 350 single-family homes— the majority with water views—Aqualane Shores is nestled along Naples Bay with easy access to the Gulf of Mexico. A longestablished neighborhood, it has mature landscaping, tree-shaded streets, and proximity to shopping, dining, and entertainment on neighboring Third Street South. 66

This new town, established in 2005, sprawls Ave Maria across 5,000 acres centered around Ave Maria University, a Catholic institution founded by Domino’s Pizza tycoon Tom Monaghan. Ave Maria has single-and multifamily homes, a golf course, a downtown area with retail and restaurants, a water park, and recreational fields, with plans for a hospital and additional amenities.

BAREFOOT BEACH With the 342-acre Barefoot Beach Preserve as its southern-most boundary, Barefoot Beach

offers waterfront homes with views of Little Hickory Bay and the gulf. Many of its low-rise condos, villas, and three- and four-story homes, ranging from Mediterranean to coastal contemporary, are on the shell-crushed beach.

BAYSHORE Anchored by the Naples Botanical Garden, this 1,800-acre area south of U.S. 41, east of Naples is undergoing a revitalization centered on creating a walkable neighborhood arts district with cottages and condominiums as well as recreational and cultural facilities. Many new businesses are opening and new homes are going up.

COQUINA SANDS Winding streets lined with mature ficus, banyan, and palm trees tell the story of Coquina Sands as the first community to develop beyond the borders of Old Naples. Encompassing the beachfront Lowdermilk Park, many of Coquina Sands’ original Old Florida-style, single-family homes and condominiums are being transformed, much like its neighbor, the historic Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club.

roots. Its farms yield the majority of America’s tomato crop and the Bayshore University of Florida’s Southwest Florida Research and Education Center is located here. The Seminole Casino Hotel Immokalee draws national entertainment throughout the year.

LAKE PARK

The eastern corridor along U.S. 41 features a wide range of suburban neighborhoods and master-planned communities including golfcentric TPC Treviso Bay and the sprawling, five-mile Lely Resort.

Lake Park is made up of 450 homes, with an average construction date of 1970, on canopied streets with bike pathways. Small enclaves have their own distinct names; Lake Manor, Lake Forrest, and Lake Park unified as a homeowner’s association long ago. Proximity to schools, businesses, and five parks make this a familyfriendly neighborhood.

EVERGLADES CITY

MARCO ISLAND

Far flung from any mall or high-rise, Everglades City is a slice of natural Florida brushing up against the Everglades and recognized as the “gateway to the Ten Thousand Islands.” The one-square-mile incorporated city with a population of 400 is an ideal outpost for those seeking rural, small-town-America charm, game fishing, and water pursuits.

At 24 square miles, Marco is the largest barrier island of the Everglades’ mangrove-tangled Ten Thousand Islands. With 100 miles of waterways,

the island attracts those who want a boat in the backyard and the convenience of shopping, restaurants, and on-island health care. Many of its singlefamily homes and condominiums are located on the gulf, canals, or bays.

MOORINGS North of downtown Naples along the gulf, the Moorings is one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods with tree-lined streets, mature landscaping, and mostly single-family homes on large lots. At 1,300 acres, it’s the city of Naples’ largest subdivision and is not gated, yet offers the amenities of a gated community, including a private country club and beach. Homes on Doctor’s Bay enjoy mile-long views to Village Shops on Venetian Bay and gulf access via Doctor’s Pass.

This rambling neighborhood of new and 1970sera single-family homes along the east side of U.S. 41 north of Vanderbilt Beach Road encompasses more than what initially meets the eye. Within its boundaries are seven lakes and large estate lots accommodating spacious homes with stables, riding arenas, tennis courts, and guesthouses.

Naples’ most exclusive address is home to a who’s who of business magnates, philanthropists, and jet-setters. Located at the city’s southernmost point, Port Royal’s sprawling beachfront and bayside estates are hidden behind towering hedges and lush landscaping. WHEN CHOO SING A BANK, IT OFTEN SEEMS LIKE YOU ONL Y HAVE TWO OPTIONS . You can pick a small, community bank where you’re greeted by name and have limited access to products. Or, you can select a big bank that provides an abundance of services and treats you like a number.

Wintrust Banking Center didn’t find either option appealing. That’s what led President, Founder, & CEO Ed Wehmer to open the first Wintrust Community Bank 30 years ago. His goal? Offer big-bank products with the personal touch of a community bank. Today, Wintrust Banking Center is one of more than 175 Wintrust Community Banks that still operate on Ed’s ethos: that customer service matters. And, unlike big banks, Wintrust doesn’t think that offering a superior suite of products should change how customers are greeted when they stop by the bank or give them a call. At Wintrust Banking Center, you can do more than open checking accounts, savings accounts, or get certific tes of deposit. Wintrust also offers a wide array of specialties and has experts who can help you make the best possible financial decision for today and in the future.

“Bar Tulia in Mercato or on Fifth Avenue South offers amazing cocktails. New York Pizza & Pasta has an amazing happy hour with tasty bar bites at $5 and $7. And you can’t beat enjoying the sunsets at Gumbo Limbo at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples.” Andres Paz, chief experience officer, AdVenture “We’re fortunate to have many locally owned eateries and some of my favorites can be found on Third Street South and Fifth Av82

enue South. But my absolute favorite can be found off the beaten path. The Bay House consistently delivers with a clear passion for great food (the Carpet Bagger Steak and Crescent City Beignets? Oh my!), delectable cocktails, live music, and a picture-perfect view of the mangroves on the Cocohatchee River. This is my go-to spot for special occasions and their Sunday brunch is second-to-none.” Jen Clark, vice president, SWFL Music Education Center “The Bayshore corridor is a fun place to hang out now. There is a great brewery, Ankrolab, a cool food truck park with a bar in Celebration Park, and good restaurants—Three60 Market, Low Brow Pizza, and Taqueria San Julian. You also have the Naples Botanical Garden nearby. Sometimes after a busy day, I head over to FUSE Global Cuisine for a drink

Donna ripped through the area in 1960. Designed by Naples architect Dick Morris, it was commissioned by Julius Fleischmann to establish a landmark so visitors could easily drop by to find out about local attractions, hotels, and golf courses. Fleischmann was an active developer and promoter of Naples who owned the Caribbean Gardens and had the building sited near his attraction, which is the Naples Zoo today. Fleischmann used it as a promotional ticket booth for Caribbean Gardens, and then it served as the Naples Chamber of Commerce (founded in 1947) Visitor Center through the late 1980s. After the chamber moved on, the small building sat vacant for more than a decade and was left to deteriorate. In 1999, voters approved a referendum to purchase the property for $8 million. A nonprofit group of citizens, Friends of Naples Preserve, rolled up their sleeves and removed trash and non-native vegetation. They worked to raise JOHN EDER

$250,000 to restore the mid-century gem to defray the cost for taxpayers. Today, nature enthusiasts can traverse the 9.5-acre green space, comprising pine flatwoods and oak scrub, via a half-mile-long boardwalk. There’s plenty to see along the walk: butterfly pollinator gardens, gopher tortoises (a state-designated threatened species), and the National Champion myrtle oak standing at 41 feet tall—the largest documented in the United States. There are also picnic tables. In many ways, it’s fulfilling its original intent: welcoming newcomers with information about Collier County’s natural and cultural amenities. It’s become a place for quiet reflection and a quick immersion in nature amid the urban bustle. Although it was once eyed for demolition, this geometric landmark has become a symbol of Naples’ past design influences and residents’ desire to preserve some of it. The Hedges Family Eco-Center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week, except holidays. It is located at 1690 Tamiami Trail N. For information, call 239-261-4290.
