elcome to the 2021 edition of Naples on the Gulf—the official visitor and relocation guide of the Greater Naples Chamber. The Naples area has vacation and lifestyle choices for the young

and the young-at-heart. Whether you are a first-time visitor or a returning guest, you’ll find that we’re a tropical paradise, and the Chamber is able to seamlessly connect you with the employers, venues, and people who can help turn your visit into a relocation! We are especially proud of our community and are excited to help you explore its vibrancy. From the natural beauty of the Everglades to our white-sand beaches, from our popular street fairs to our pickleball playgrounds, and our myriad of golf courses, shopping options, and cultural amenities, Naples has something for absolutely everyone to enjoy. Our area is also heralded for its energetic efforts in promoting a strong economic climate. Since the COVID-19 outbreak in spring 2020, the Chamber has taken a leadership role as a connector between government and local businesses on pandemic-related issues and resources. At the same time, it has remained visionary and active on important, long-term local matters such as education, career and technical training, leadership development, and water quality. As the pandemic continues to evolve, the Chamber remains committed to keeping Collier County performing strong through the crisis and positioned for better times ahead. Together, our businesses, community leaders, and partners are what make Naples a unique place to live, work, and visit. We welcome you with enthusiasm and open hearts! We hope our guide will help you realize the charm of our destination on Florida’s Paradise Coast and all the opportunities waiting just for you.

Your new home should include another Naples resource.

You chose Naples as your home base because of our world-class amenities. That’s the same reason Tom Moran put down roots and began serving clients here over 30 years ago. As SW Florida has boomed, so has Moran Wealth Management, with over $3 billion dollars in assets under management as of 9/30/2020. To be named a Barron’s Hall of Fame Advisor the advisor has to have been named by Barron’s for the last ten years consecutively in any of their rankings. The Naples area is home to 30 miles of white-sand shoreline, and each beach is its own unique slice of paradise. In the original 1888 brochure promoting Naples as a new resort destination, “surf bathing” in the warm waters along the gently sloping shoreline of the Gulf of Mexico was touted as a “healthful” year-round pursuit. (Gulf temperatures generally range from 68° Fahrenheit in early February to 88° in early August.)

Tigertail Beach

Tigertail Beach is the jewel among the smooth, wide beaches along Marco Island’s western shore. On the island’s north end, the pristine beach can be accessed by five boardwalks though a mangrove forest. Across the tidal bay is Sand Dollar Island, a popular nesting area for a wide variety of birds. The beach is known for its abundance of shells, sand dollars, and as a bird migration superhighway. (Location: 430 Hernando Drive, Marco Island)

022_BEACHES_1020.indd 23

Naples Pier

For 130 years, the Naples Pier has been the pulse of Naples Beach. This historic landmark is an ideal place to stroll, lounge, fish, boogie-board, and wade. The Pier hosts restrooms, showers, and the popular Cosmos, selling homemade specialty pizza, Italian subs, fresh salads, gelato, souvenirs, and fishing equipment. Metered parking is located nearby, with additional parking and access points along Gulf Shore Boulevard. (Location: West end of 12 Avenue South, Naples)

ALL PARKING SPACES REQUIRE A PAYMENT OR A VALID BEACH PARKING PERMIT. FULL-TIME RESIDENTS AND PROPERTY TAXPAYERS CAN PARK FREE WITH A CITY OR COUNTY BEACH PARKING PERMIT. (ANY DISABILITY PERMIT HOLDER MAY PARK AT ANY SPACE WITHOUT PAYMENT.) WITHOUT A PERMIT, BEACHGOERS SHOULD USE METERED PARKING SPACES OR PAY STATIONS (BOTH ACCEPT QUARTERS AND CREDIT/DEBIT CARDS). Clam Pass

Lowdermilk Park

Lowdermilk Park

Lowdermilk Park is a great place for the whole family. Spend the day at this premier beachfront park with two playgrounds, picnic tables, sand volleyball courts, and two rentable gazebos. Convenient facilities include a concession stand, spacious restrooms and outdoor showers. There is ample onsite metered parking and on the street. (Location: 1301 Gulf Shore Blvd. N., at the corner Banyan Boulevard)

Clam Pass

The three-quarter-mile boardwalk through the mangroves at Clam Pass is a memorable, nature-filled jaunt. The thriving tidal ecosystem is home to various birds and other wildlife, and the mangrove roots provide important spawning grounds for fish and shellfish. Once you’ve made it through—on foot or on the courtesy tram—one of Naples’

most pristine and scenic beaches awaits. With a concession stand, restrooms, equipment rentals, and more, you won’t need to bring much. With nearly 200 parking spaces, you rarely have to search for a spot. (Location: Corner of Crayton Road and Seagate Drive)

Vanderbilt Beach Park

At this county park, beachgoers can drop off their gear at the circle before parking in the nearby garage. Vanderbilt offers beach wheelchairs and life jacket loans, as well restrooms and showers. Snacks and watersports rentals are available at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples, and Vanderbilt Inn resorts. Fees: $8 per vehicle (Location: West end of Vanderbilt Beach Road)

Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park

Secluded and relaxing, the park boasts of one of the most unspoiled beaches in the United States. Get your cameras ready, because natural wildlife abounds. Along the nature trails and open waters, expect to spot resident and migratory birds, tortoises, dolphins, and more. The park’s waters are perfect for fishing and shelling. Outside of the pass, calm surf and shallow water make this a popular sun-bathing spot. Fees: $6 per vehicle (Location: 11135 Gulfshore Drive, Naples)

Barefoot Beach

Barefoot Beach

One of the last undeveloped barrier islands in Southwest Florida, Barefoot Beach is regularly rated among the country’s best beaches. The 342acre preserve may just be the region’s most perfect pairing of natural beauty and great amenities. More than a mile of sugary sands made Barefoot Beach famous. But there’s much more to see and do. The park is home to gopher tortoises, sea turtle nesting grounds, natural sabal palm and gumbo-limbo groves, plus there is a mile-long nature trail and pavilions where you can gather with family and friends. Between the park and the Barefoot Beach access point, there are nearly 500 spaces. (Location: 505 Barefoot Beach Blvd., Naples)

IT’S PERFECT,” SAYS FLEISCHER, 41, WHO IS EXPECTING HIS FIRST CHILD WITH HIS FIANCÉ, SHANNON. “ONE THING WE NOTICED IS THE FAMILY COMMUNITIES IN THE AREA. IT’S GOT EVERYTHING WE NEED.”

Ben Fleischer, Pyure Brands

A wealth of support

When New York native Ben Fleischer moved to Naples in 2008 to launch his organic stevia business Pyure Brands, he chose it, in part, because he believed that he wouldn’t have the distractions of a major metropolitan area. After a dozen years of extraordinary company success and professional growth, Fleischer recently discovered a personal benefit to his decision he hadn’t anticipated: It’s a great place to start a family. “It’s perfect,” says Fleischer, 41, who is expecting his first child with his fiancée, Shannon Taylor. “One thing we noticed is the family communities in the area. It’s got everything we need.” Pyure develops and distributes stevia—a sugar substitute which is sold in more than 20,000

stores nationwide. It has about 20 employees at its headquarters in Naples working in all facets of operations and product development. Pyure employees and interns benefit from a flexible, creative, and collaboration-minded workplace, which is expanding to add a stateof-the art ingredient lab for several new food technologists to develop products incorporating Pyure stevia, such as baking mixes and liquid sweeteners. “We created this incredible space to be creative,” Fleischer says. “One thing we’ve been constantly working on is innovation. We’ve got incredible staff behind it. We are the No. 1 organic stevia brand on store shelves, but we need to keep pushing forward.” One thing Fleischer learned early on is that the wealth of successful businesspeople in the community are eager and willing to lend sage advice. “Everything seems to be a phone call away, if you really dig into it,” he says. A great mix

A premier quality of lifeand proximity to his wife’s family recently lured New Jersey native Tom Merriam and his growing young family to Naples. What the Harvard Business School graduate and former McKinsey & Company consultant didn’t anticipate was remaining as greatly involved in major global business operations as he was before he left the fast-paced Northeast. As strategic initiatives director for Lupin Pharmaceuticals, Merriam is among two dozen executives at its corporate office location in Naples, including company CEO Vinita Gupta. Lupin, which opened its headquarters in Naples in 2014, is the 32

third-largest pharmaceutical company in the U.S. As ambitious professionals, Merriam and his wife had a plan. “We always told ourselves, ‘When we’re young, we’re going to put the pedal to the medal, but when it’s time to settle down and have kids, we’ll step back a little bit,’” says Merriam, 34, who moved with his wife to Naples in August 2019 to work at Lupin. Their first child was born months later. “Maybe I didn’t step back so much because I took a job as the right hand to the CEO of a major pharmaceutical company,” he says. Lupin, which employs about 25,000 people globally, has earned a reputation for cultivating long careers. That’s due in part to a professional culture that values employees and promotes a

sense of ownership, Merriam says. As the corporate hub, the Naples office skews toward more tenured executives, but it also features strong collaboration with young and rising professionals, Merriam says. “It’s a great place to learn because you’ve got this great mix,” he notes. Merriam and his wife hadn’t known much about Naples’ attributes prior to relocating, but the young couple soon discovered its golfing, shopping, culinary, and outdoor splendor. They also realized another major benefit Naples has over many large metropolitan regions: the cost of living. “My house here is roughly the same price as New Jersey, but I pay 40 percent of the property taxes and don’t pay any state income tax. That’s huge,” he says. “We love where we’re at, and we would love to stay here. The stars kind of aligned. I think that goes as well for our CEO and a lot of the other folks who are very important to the company.”

Prestigious address

The collaboration and mentorship that goes on between newbies and industry veterans often happen within a company’s own walls. Venture X, founded in Naples and now a global franchise, cultivates diverse business relationships between self-employed people who don’t show up at the same office every day and punch a timeclock. Venture X is a stylish, flexible, shared workspace launched in 2012 by Naples entrepreneur David Diamond and his son, Brett, where networking in a professional environment is part of the intrinsic appeal. “We attract a really diverse group of people,” says Amanda Custodio, community manager. “The collaboration that happens here organically is really rewarding to see.”

Naples Venture X is expanding to an 18,000-square-foot space south of Pine Ridge Road. The flexible, shared workspace was launched in 2012 by Naples entrepeneur David Diamond and his son, Brett, who recently sold the company, now a global franchise.

One recent example of the type of cross-pollination that Venture X is meant to nurture: A member told Custodio of his need for a patent lawyer and she literally turned him around and introduced him to a patent lawyer who happened to be standing behind him. “They just needed an introduction,” she says. Venture X’s model appeals to a range of professionals in need of temporary or dedicated meeting or office space, and it is proving quite popular. It is ideal for gig workers and freelancers, self-employed professionals in a gamut of fields, semi-retired businesspeople working as consultants, and startup entrepreneurs. Naples Venture X is tripling its office space at its new 18,000-square-foot space south of Pine Ridge Road. Though the Diamonds sold the corporation and it is expanding nationally through franchises, they are still stakeholders in the brand they founded. The Naples address is a plus for all members, whether local, seasonal, or working remotely. “People know Naples,” says Kiana Stouder, head of membership growth at Naples Venture X. “If you want a prestigious Naples address, you can get a virtual office with us.” Naples is chockful of successful businesspeople and is reportedly home to the largest concentration of Forbes 500 executives, whether retired, serving on corporate boards, or still active. This aura, as well as in-person mentorship, inspires young professionals. “You’re constantly learning about how successful people have been in Naples,” says Natalie Earp, Naples Venture X community coordinator. Like Stouder, Earp is a recent graduate of FGCU. “You can get a good job here. You have all these opportunities to get right into your career. You’re going to have a great salary right out of college. So why wouldn’t you stay?”

Professional growth

Few industries gravitate toward younger generations more than technology. KORE Wireless, a global, 500-person company founded in 2003 and specializing in integrated connectivity, naturally skews a little young, including at its Naples location. Its local staff of about 50 includes software developers, network engineers, IT staff, and customer support, including for the on-board navigation system of a major auto manufacturer. “We’re in an industry that is fairly young and changing every single day,” says Steve Ridgeway, a human resources executive in Naples who is heavily involved in recruiting for the local office. “I’m always looking for someone who has a natural sense of curiosity, somebody who wants to be part of something that’s growing, expanding, and brand-new.” Ridgeway, a native Bostonian who was based in KORE’s Boston office until two years ago, was drawn to Naples, as many are, by the weather. He was equally enthused by a vibrant, company-wide culture of innovation and collaboration that is often at its best in Naples. That stems in part from amenities and activities designed to promote a strong worklife balance, from a gaming console and table tennis in the office to annual events and gatherings outside it. There are also professional initiatives, such as a new mentorship program and a high-potentials development program. “You can really build your career here,” Ridgeway says. “We want you to grow your career here.” 34

Quality of Life WHAT MAKES NAPLES A DESIRABLE PLACE TO LIVE AND WORK?

As someone who was born and raised in Naples, I cannot think of a better place. Professionally, it is an ever-growing town which invests in quality infrastructure and thoughtful planning. The United Way of Collier and the Keys is fortunate to have the support of local companies and generous individuals to help us make the community better. I am also a parent, and Naples is a safe place to raise my son. Collier County Public Schools is a phenomenal system which helps every student reach his or her potential.” —Katie Schweikhardt, vice president of resource development, United Way of Collier and the Keys

Naples has grown a lot more diverse in the past few years. It’s no longer a snowbird town, but one where families are choosing to put their roots down. My husband and I have a toddler and are thrilled to see more families with young children in the area. We’re also seeing a more eclectic dining scene. In the seven years I have lived here, I’ve seen the area grow to be more diverse and more eclectic—a town where I look forward to raising my children, not just retire to.” —Jigsha Desai, director of the Florida Digital Optimization Team, Gannett/USA Today Network/Naples Daily News

Naples Philharmonic chamber ensemble

Coming from Detroit, Michigan, we rarely saw the sun much in the wintertime or enjoyed going to the beaches year-round. Moving to Naples was the best decision my husband, Daniel Melvin, and I could have made. Daniel is a professional singer and his music is so appreciated here. As a bank vice president, I have been able to meet many professional goals here. I love the arts, from Artis-Naples to the concerts at Cambier Park to the wonderful movie theaters and malls.” — Barbara Melvin, vice president community lender, First Florida Integrity Bank

“Having grown up here, the landscape is really compelling to me. I spent 40 years in New York and Los Angeles but moved back two years ago. There are a lot of opportunities to photograph the subject matter I’m interested in. That includes a good market for architectural photography because there is so much building here. Naples seems fairly insulated to the swings in the stock market and economy. It’s a beautiful city with magnificent landscaping and civil engineering. It’s a really desirable place to live.” — John Eder, owner and photographer, Marker 4 Photos

What I really appreciate about Naples is how individuals, organizations, and community leaders rally to support well-being. For four consecutive years, Gallup ranked our community with the highest well-being in the nation. When businesses, schools, homeowner’s associations, non-profits, faith-based organizations, grocery stores, and restaurants all work together to make healthy choices easier, we are optimizing the environment where we all live, work, learn, and play.” — Deb Logan, executive director, Blue Zones Project Southwest Florida

WHAT BETTER WAY TO EXPERIENCE NAPLES ON THE GULF THAN ON THE WATER?

n Southwest Florida, water is more than an unparalleled natural resource, it’s a way of life. Along Naples’ coastline, the vast sapphire backdrop offers a wealth of activities and indelible experiences. The waves give way to 30 miles of beaches that roll out a soft sand blanket for sunbathing or watching the sunset—a memorable enchantment visitors don’t want to miss. “The Naples lifestyle is certainly a laid-back one,” says Jack Wert, executive director and CEO of the Naples, Marco Island, Everglades Convention & Visitors Bureau. “It is certainly water-related.” The Gulf of Mexico, marshes and prairies, and rivers and lakes all provide a cool contrast to Naples’ 264 days of sunshine each year. The gulf’s waves beckon waders, swimmers, kayakers, and boaters. Backwaters bordered by mangroves teem with marine life—the perfect areas to fish and spot manatees, alligators, and a range of wading and migratory birds. The region has lured recreational fishermen since the late 1880s, when the news spread internationally that tarpon (known as the Silver

36

King) were first landed in Southwest Florida with rod and reel. Popular seasonal fishing targets for recreational fishermen include snapper, snook, redfish, grouper, and largemouth bass. If sightseeing suits your pursuits, tool to nearby Keewaydin Island, a popular shelling spot, Marco Island, or through the Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge. From a hotel perch to public park, there are untold opportunities for celebrating a stunning sunset—and the landmark Naples Pier is undoubtedly one of the most popular. “Florida’s Paradise Coast really does describe what people expect to experience when they come here,” Wert says. “When we ask people what they think of when it comes to our destination, the word is paradise.” The Everglades, Wert says, is a gem that new and long-time residents should take the time to explore. “The Everglades are in our backyard,” he says. “Something that many new residents, and even residents that have been here for a number of years, have not experienced is the Everglades—

they have not taken that jaunt, and it’s not far.” He suggests exploring the backcountry by taking an airboat ride or journeying through Everglades National Park, Big Cypress National Preserve, or Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve on a ranger-led or self-guided day trip. The local marine industry is also an important cog in the local economy that fuels jobs for outfitters and bait shop proprietors, fishing guides and boat captains, service and maintenance techs, commercial fishermen, and tour and marina operations. In addition to its copious aquatic resources, Collier County boasts the largest land mass of any Florida county, Wert says, which is a luxury that has provided residents more options in the COVID era. “We are able to let nature make us feel better about the situation we are in,” he says. On the water and on the land, “we’ve got an abundance of wide-open spaces. There are lots of places to social distance.”

Celebrating Our Cultural Paradise

Naples Art

COMMUNITY-WIDE COLLABORATIONS ARE FOCUSED ON THE AREA’S EXPANSIVE CULTURAL AMENITIES BY LAURA BURNS

As the Paradise Coast, Collier County holds something valuable and compelling: authentic community and cultural experiences not available elsewhere. It’s a true cultural paradise. With vibrant communities of individual performing and visual artists, studios, and galleries, rich culinary experiences, budding arts districts, and local agriculture, the area is ripe for enjoyment. Genuine cultural events and venues and soulsatisfying, homegrown culture combine the familiar and unexpected, creating opportunity for connection on several levels. The unique character of our diverse communities, people, artistry, history, and stories awaits the discovery of visitors and residents alike. Though the art scene was forced to pause and re44

invent itself following the onset of COVID-19, Collier County has shown leadership, collaboration, and unity in making the cultural fabric as strong as ever. In 2016, the United Arts Council of Collier County (UAC) announced the results of the “Arts & Economic Impact 5 Study” sponsored by Americans for the Arts, representing Collier County’s inaugural participation in the study. The study benchmarked the economic impact of nonprofit arts and cultural organizations and audiences. The results illustrated to the Collier County Board of Commissioners the strong, local economic value of arts and culture: an overall impact of more than $107 million annually. The study also noted that volunteerism is solid; in

the same year, 4,530 volunteers donated 221,278 hours to 44 nonprofit organizations. This study inspired county officials and arts leaders to research and craft the Arts & Culture Strategic Plan, approved by commissioners in 2020. This long-term collaborative project aims to elevate the county as an arts and cultural destination. The initiative is being undertaken by Collier County government and tourism leaders, residents, and the creative community, and coordinated and implemented by the UAC. In addition to highlighting the Naples area as an arts and cultural destination, its second overarching goal is to strengthen Collier’s arts and cultural demographics and geography. These two goals are interdependent. In Collier, arts and culture do not stand alone. They exist in relation to the region’s extraordinary natural environment and multidimensional cultural heritage. Collier artists and arts organizations are collaborating across sectors, providing a foundation for enhanced and strategic cultural immersions for residents and visitors. Parks are sponsoring art exhibits and resident artists, restaurants are

offering “dinner with an artist” events and often exhibit local artwork, and hotels are actively seeking cultural experiences for guests. Communities that have organically solidified over time, such as the Naples Design District and Naples Art District, have become established arts districts working to promote their studios, showrooms,

and special events. The Artis-Naples campus has long been recognized as a crown jewel in Southwest Florida, while Fifth Avenue South and Third Street South draw visitors to galleries, outdoor art festivals, and concerts and performances at Cambier Park, Norris Center, and Sugden Community Theatre. East of Naples, the Bayshore Arts District has been on the rise in recent years, with plans to launch public murals and a community performance venue. After 15 years of working to raise a performing and visual arts center in the Bayshore community, the nonprofit Cultural And Performing Arts Center (CAPA) recently merged with UAC to facilitate the Arts & Culture Strategic Plan and concentrate on plans for spreading cultural arts in eastern Collier. An Umbrella for All Disciplines Established in 1981, the UAC is marking its 40th anniversary while celebrating its 2020 merger with CAPA and expanded community leadership role. Since becoming the county’s official state-designated local arts agency in 1984, the UAC has grown into an umbrella agency for arts and culture in all disciplines with a mission to “enrich lives and strengthen the community through the power of the arts.” It is supported by 450 individual and 60 organizational members. Organizational members include Artis-Naples, Naples Art, four Collier County Museums, The Naples Players, Gulfshore Playhouse, Naples Botanical Garden, Conservancy of Southwest Florida, Marco Island Center for the Arts, Opera Naples, Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, and Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, alongside 14 venues and more than 35 independent galleries. These organizations serve an affluent audience of patrons and are visited by several hundred thousand people each year. In turn, several smaller cultural organizations have an outsized impact. For instance, Classic Chamber Concerts and the Music Foundation of Greater Naples offer high-quality programming to the public and raise thousands of dollars annually to support scholarships for local music students—proof, yet again, that community leaders value Collier’s cultural landscape. Be a Good Neighbor We all play a part in making sure these natives remain happy and healthy. Whether you are a long-time resident or first-time visitor, here are some tips for being a good neighbor. * Leave nothing but footprints. A major cause of harm to wildlife is plastic pollution. Bottle caps, ribbons, balloons, and monofilament fishing line kill or maim birds, sea turtles, and marine mammals. (More than 700 pelicans die each year in Florida from entanglement in fishing gear.) Use less plastic and clean up litter. * Observe safe speeds on the roads and on the water to avoid collisions with wildlife. * Don’t feed wildlife. This poses a threat to humans, domestic animals, and the wildlife being fed. Feeding pelicans is prohibited by law. * Take nothing but pictures. Florida has strict laws that prohibit the capturing, harming, or harassment of Florida’s native species, including live shells, sea stars, urchins, and sand dollars. NAPLES ON THE GULF 2021

Parks & Recreation The Factory fitness pavillion at the Paradise Coast Sports Complex

Game On!

THE PARADISE COAST SPORTS COMPLEX, ONE OF THE LARGEST IN THE NATION, IS THE NEWEST GEM IN THE COUNTY’S EXTENSIVE OFFERINGS FOR SPORTS ENTHUSIASTS Paradise Coast Sports Complex

Sports and recreation are in high demand in Collier County for adults and youth alike—and the new $66 million Paradise Coast Sports Complex is a world-class facility designed to please locals and draw championship competition from near and far. The 180-acre complex in East Naples will be built out in four phases to create a lifestyle destination that will draw even the non-sporty types. It will ultimately feature: 19 fields; a wakeboarding lake; volleyball courts; baseball and softball diamonds; 5,000-seat stadium; and an amphitheater with an 18-foot-high projection screen elevated 30 feet in the air. Added to the fun are food trucks, a bar, fire pits, cornhole, trails, and a rock wall. 50

The first phase—five fields, a great lawn, concessions, and The Factory fitness pavilion—opened in July 2020. For its debut showcase, the complex welcomed hundreds of middle and high school FBU Top Gun football players to compete for regional and national recognition. The complex was planned to be enjoyed by local residents during the week and draw out-of-town sports teams and tournaments on weekends. “It’s one of the largest complexes in the United States. It’s absolutely stunning,” says Collier County Deputy Manager Nick Casalanguida, who scouted top sports facilities and researched amenities to incorporate the best into this state-of-the-art facility. Community leaders are also envisioning the Paradise Coast Sports Complex as more than just recreational turf. It will become a cultural facility

that can host outdoor performances because the amphitheater and stadium were designed “with events like concerts in mind,” Casalanguida says. “It’s quite the park in the middle of the park.” The Paradise Coast Sport Complex has become an important component in promoting tourism and stimulating the economy by welcoming athletes and their families, fans, and sports spectators to major tournaments. During their stay for sports or concerts, visitors will spend dollars at local hotels, shops, restaurants, and other attractions, and perhaps decide to return for another family vacation. Casalanguida notes new recreational amenities have been sorely needed to alleviate the demand at the county’s facilities, which have juggled a utilization rate of more than 90 percent. Collier County’s population has increased 12.6 percent in the past decade, and young families and health-conscious adults and seniors are driving the demand for more amenities. “The demographics are a lot more active,” Casalanguida says, “and they’re looking to recreate.” Work has begun on another multimillion-dollar facility on 48 acres near the Collier County Fairgrounds: Big Corkscrew Island Regional Park. “It’s going to be another gorgeous regional park with lakes, trails, pools, and multipurpose fields for soccer, football, and lacrosse,” he says. The Paradise Coast Sports Complex is managed by Sports Force Parks. For more information or to book an event: sportsforceparksnaples.com.

With 90 golf courses, Collier County has long been known as the “Golf Capital of the World.” It boasts three annual professional golf tournaments and challenging professional holes set against panoramic scenery dotted with wildlife. But it might as well be known as the “Pickleball Capital of the World,” too. At public facilities and private clubhouses in gated communities, tennis facilities have been speedily renovated to incorporate pickleball play in response to its surge in popularity nationally and locally. East Naples Community Park—which has hosted the U.S. Open Pickleball Championships annually since its 2016 inception—is the hotspot. An ambitious renovation expanded its pickleball courts to 64, along with other upgrades. A second phase is adding a 3,500-seat stadium, 1,000 additional parking spots, a community center, and a welcome center. The championships typically draw an estimated 2,100 visitors annually each April. Find your athletic bliss at Collier County’s 69 neighborhood, community, regional parks (collierparks.com), which offer a wide range of recreational options, wellness programs and summer camps, and family-friendly amenities, such as playgrounds and picnic pavilions. These are some of the main draws: East Naples Community Park: In addition to pickleball, basketball, tennis, racquetball, softball, and soccer, and a .75-mile jogging trail Golden Gate Community Park: Youth softball and baseball, tennis, soccer/football, basketball, shuffleboard, bocce, fitness and nature trails, swimming pools North Collier Regional Park: Tournament soccer and softball, lacrosse, basketball,

Interaction with nature, a supportive social network, and healthful habits have long been advocated as the key components to physical, mental, and emotional well-being. With year-round sunshine, miles of nature trails, beaches, and mind-calming waterways, and plentiful opportunities for meaningful community engagement, Naples opens its arms to exceptional lifestyles. For four consecutive years, the Gallup National Health and Well-Being Index named the Naples-Immokalee-Marco Island metropolitan statistical area No. 1 as the place where residents report a strong sense of well-being based on factors such as financial security, community connection, and overall health. A significant reason for this ranking is its participation in the global Blue Zones Project, a community-wide commitment to adopting lifestyle habits proven to stave off preventable chronic illnesses—regardless of socioeconomic background or age. As part of Blue Zones Southwest Florida, schools, grocery stores, communities, organizations, and businesses have embraced healthful principles and practices designed to encourage vibrant lifestyles, increased productivity, and lowered health-care costs. Golfing in Naples

Tee Time

FLORIDA’S GOLF CAPITAL INVITES YOUR GAME

Did you know that Collier County has more than 90 public and private golf courses? Or that the Naples–Marco Island area has the most holes per capita nationwide? The area has attracted the most renowned golf course designers to create new courses and renovate long-established ones. It also is a favorite destination for national professional and amateur tournaments. This makes Naples the ideal place to perfect your game. Here are courses that are open to the public—a “tee-rific” place to start.

Arrowhead Golf Course

2205 Heritage Greens Drive, Naples Par/yardage: 72/6,832 Consistently voted “Best Public Golf Course” in regional polls, Arrowhead features 16 lakes, sculpted fairways, and contoured greens. Warm up on the grass practice range and putting green. 58

Eagle Lakes Golf Club

18100 Royal Tree Pkwy., Naples Par/yardage: 72/7,177 This course matches up against the lowest handicappers while providing casual players with a one-of-a-kind Everglades golf experience. Keep your eye out for abundant wildlife, including a pair of American bald eagles and other “birdies.”

Hibiscus Golf Club

5375 Hibiscus Drive, Naples Par/yardage: 72/6,476 Wide fairways, bunkered greens, and numerous lakes and streams make each hole a new challenge at this 18-hole course. It was originally created in 1969 but underwent a renovation, along with the clubhouse, in 2007. It recently underwent a major tee box renovation, as well as ongoing landscaping enhancement with 150 new trees and 400 shrubs.

Lely Resort (Flamingo Island) 8004 Lely Resort Blvd., Naples Par/yardage: 72/7,095 The oldest of three courses in Lely Resort—and one of two open to the public—Flamingo Island has been named a “Top 50 Resort Course” by Golf World magazine. Flamingo Island is the more challenging of the two public-play courses. The other is the welcoming Mustang course. Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club

851 Gulf Shore Blvd. N., Naples Par/yardage: 71/6,929 In 2016, Jack Nicklaus and John Sanford redesigned this historic, 1940s course at Southwest Florida’s only beachfront resort with an on-site championship layout. This is where then-11year-old Nicklaus broke 40 on nine holes for the first time in his life during a family vacation in 1951.

The championship golf course at the AAA Four Diamondrated Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club was redesigned in 2016 by Jack Nicklaus in collaboration with John Sanford. Featuring five tees, ranging from 4,800 yards to more than 6,900 yards, it is open to the public.

Tiburón Golf Club at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort

JOHN BATEMAN

Tiburón Golf Club

Panther Run Golf Club

6005 Anthem Pkwy., Ave Maria Par/yardage: 72/7,532 This semi-private course is worth the drive to Ave Maria. With ample former agricultural land to work with, designer Gordon Lewis made sure to include all the length anyone could need. He also had fun with the design, throwing in elements such as a classic “Redan” green—sloping away from the entrance.

2620 Tiburón Drive, Naples Par/yardage: Gold Course: 72/7,382; Black Course: 72/6,949 Both courses are part of the Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, which do accommodate outside play. The longer Gold Course is home to the LPGA Tour’s CME Group Tour Championship and Greg Norman’s 24-player QBE Shootout PGA Tour event. The Black Course may be tougher, with more forced carries and tighter lines on firm, fast fairways.

TPC Treviso Bay

9800 Treviso Bay Blvd., Naples Par/yardage: 72/7,367 Part of the PGA Tour’s network of Tournament Players Club courses, Treviso Bay was built with the capacity to host professional golfers. A members’ course also open to outside play, Treviso Bay is lined with an Arthur Hills signature design element: endless humps, bumps, and nobs that frame the fairways and guard the green complexes.

Riviera Golf Club of Naples

48 Marseille Drive, Naples Par/yardage: 62/1,800 This executive-length course offers a mix of 11 par 3s, six par 4s, and a par 5 to ensure a player’s entire game is tested, and that every club in the bag is used. The course features Sunday Ultra-Dwarf greens, wide fairways, mature trees, bunkers, and back-9 ponds that attract wildlife.

Valencia Golf & Country Club

1725 Double Eagle Trail, Naples Par/yardage: 72/7,145 Renovated in 2018, Valencia is inviting, affordable, well-maintained, and as challenging as you want it to be. Ample practice grounds are another attraction at this daily-fee facility.

Get in the Swing If you are new to the game and need to gear up, or looking to repair or replace a club, the Naples area has several options for getting into the swing of things. A Place in the

Sun

Old Naples

For many visitors to Naples, it’s often love at first sight. Palm trees, white-sand beaches, the dazzling Gulf of Mexico, and the promise of a tropical lifestyle weave their magic. Family vacations, business conferences, and winter getaways become homebuying missions. For a year-round or seasonal nest, real estate opportunities are seemingly endless: gated communities with amenities rivaling plush resorts; beachfront mansions and cottages; low- and high-rise towers; historic neighborhoods; and even a new city. Whether you are a first-time buyer, relocating from a bustling metropolis, or looking to upgrade because of an expanding family or income, there are a range of home styles to fit your needs and budget. The question is: where? Get to know some of the area’s established communities. Bayshore Neighborhood

AQUALANE SHORES

BAREFOOT BEACH

A community of 350 single-family homes—the majority with water views—Aqualane Shores is nestled along Naples Bay with easy access to the Gulf of Mexico. A long-established neighborhood, it has mature landscaping, tree-shaded streets, and proximity to shopping, dining, and entertainment on neighboring Third Street South.

With the 342-acre Barefoot Beach Preserve as its southern-most boundary, Barefoot Beach offers waterfront homes with views of Little Hickory Bay and the gulf. Many of its low-rise condos, villas, and three- and fourstory homes, ranging from Mediterranean to coastal contemporary, are on the shellcrushed beach.

AVE MARIA

BAYSHORE

This new town, established in 2005, sprawls across 5,000 acres centered around Ave Maria University, a Catholic institution founded by Domino’s Pizza tycoon Tom Monaghan. Ave Maria has single-and multifamily homes, a golf course, a downtown area with retail and restaurants, a water park, and recreational fields, with plans for a hospital and additional amenities.

Anchored by the Naples Botanical Garden, this 1,800-acre area south of U.S. 41, east of Naples is undergoing a revitalization centered on creating a walkable neighborhood arts district with cottages and condominiums as well as recreational and cultural facilities. Many new businesses are opening and new homes are going up.

COQUINA SANDS

IMMOKALEE

Winding streets lined with mature ficus, banyan, and palm trees tell the story of Coquina Sands as the first community to develop beyond the borders of Old Naples. Encompassing the beachfront Lowdermilk Park, many of Coquina Sands’ original Old Florida-style, single-family homes and condominiums are being transformed, much like its neighbor, the historic Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club.

Settled in the 1870s by hunters, traders, and ranchers, Immokalee maintains its agrarian roots. Its farms yield the majority of America’s tomato crop and the University of Florida’s Southwest Florida Research and Education Center is located here. The Seminole Casino Hotel Immokalee draws national entertainment throughout the year.

EAST NAPLES The eastern corridor along U.S. 41 features a wide range of suburban neighborhoods and masterplanned communities including golf-centric TPC Treviso Bay and the sprawling, five-mile Lely Resort.

LAKE PARK Lake Park is made up of 450 homes, with an average construction date of 1970, on canopied streets with bike pathways. Small enclaves have their own distinct names; Lake Manor, Lake Forrest, and Lake Park unified as a homeowner’s association long ago. Proximity to schools, businesses, and five parks make this a familyfriendly neighborhood.

At 24 square miles, Marco is the largest barrier island of the Everglades’ mangrove-tangled Ten Thousand Islands. With 100 miles of waterways, the island attracts those who want a boat in the backyard and the convenience of shopping, restaurants, and on-island health care. Many of its singlefamily homes and condominiums are located on the gulf, canals, or bays.

MOORINGS North of downtown Naples along the gulf, the Moorings is one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods with tree-lined streets, mature landscaping, and mostly single-family homes on large lots. At 1,300 acres, it’s the city of Naples’ largest subdivision and is not gated, yet offers the amenities of a gated community, including a private country club and beach. Homes on Doctor’s Bay enjoy mile-long views to Village Shops on Venetian Bay and gulf access via Doctor’s Pass.

EVERGLADES CITY Far flung from any mall or high-rise, Everglades City is a slice of natural Florida brushing up against the Everglades and recognized as the “gateway to the Ten Thousand Islands.” The one-square-mile incorporated city with a population of 400 is an ideal outpost for those seeking rural, small-town-America charm, game fishing, and water pursuits.

Marco Island

GOLDEN GATE ESTATES A rural area of about 41,000 rambling acres, Golden Gate Estates’ acre-plus properties provide breathing space between neighboring homes, the opportunity to own horses, and a serene setting within heavily wooded areas. It’s targeted as a major growth center as the population continues to swell.

Park Shore

Old Naples

NAPLES PARK Once a working-class neighborhood, this onesquare-mile community has come into its own as a new wave of buyers discovers its proximity to the gulf, shopping, dining, and entertainment, including Mercato. Many of Naples Park’s original 1970s-era homes are being torn down to make way for pricier single-family homes.

NAPLES SQUARE/BAYFRONT

OLD NAPLES

Ambitious revitalization has brought an era of change to the area east of Old Naples bounded by U.S. 41 and the Gordon River. Mid-rise condominiums offer on-site amenities and locations easily walkable to Fifth Avenue South, Tin City, and the Naples Design District. On the east side of Goodlette-Frank Road are riverfront parks and conservation areas, the new single-family Mangrove Bay with boat slips, and the commercial-residential Bayfront.

Naples’ first neighborhood, Old Naples is highly desired for its proximity to downtown, the beach, and the Naples Pier. Its architecturally diverse homes include original 1900s cottages, mid-rise condominiums, and multimilliondollar mansions along the Gulf and Naples Bay.

After returning home to grab a shower and catnap, I might head to Third Street South and enjoy a beautiful evening on the Barbatella patio and watch the bustle of people walking by as I enjoy a glass of Prosecco and some of Naples’ best homemade pasta. Finally, you may find me looking for live music to wrap up the evening. Celebration Park is a great spot with a relaxed vibe to enjoy live music. Whether it is Matt Jollie or DJ Unek, its always makes for a great evening.” Vicki Baker, operations manager, Charlie McDonald Photography, and creator of the “Naples Hidden Gems” Facebook and Instagram sites “I enjoy going to Capriccio Ristorante Italiano & Lounge after work. “The best start to a Saturday morning is Jamie Blaiweiss’s Hot HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) class at Drip Hot Yoga. It’s the toughest workout in town, leaving you both exhausted and energized. Jamie’s mantra to make each move ‘with intention’ adjusts your mindset for life outside the studio, too. For the best drinks around Celebration Park town from morning ‘til night: Start the day in North Naples with coffee at Narrative or Kunjani. In the afternoon, I power up with a fresh smoothie at The Bowl (there is one on Pine Ridge and another downtown on Central Avenue). At night, it’s fun to meet friends at The French Brasserie Rustique on Fifth Avenue South for a fabulously refreshing frosé (frozen rosé).” Jennifer Trammell, managing director, NextGen Speaker Series, and director of marketing, Benson Blackburn

Landmarks

Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens FROM BOTANICAL GARDEN TO ACCREDITED ZOO, THIS LANDMARK IS ROOTED IN A CENTURY OF COMMUNITY AND CONSERVATION Photography courtesy of the Naples Zoo

F

ew Florida roadside attractions can boast a century of providing families with generations of smiles,though the Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens has staked that claim. Its birth as a landmark arrived after a hard freeze hit the small Central Florida town of Gotha in 1917. After his experimental exotics garden was devastated there, horticulturist and botanist Dr. Henry Nehrling bought a farm plot in Naples in 1919, where he established H. Nehrling’s Tropical Garden and Arboretum. By 1925, it boasted some 3,000 tropical plants. Nehrling collaborated with other naturalists and botanists, worked with the U.S. Bureau of Plant Industry, and met with inventor Thomas A. Edison. He’s credited with introducing more than 300 plants to the United States before he died in 1929. 88

His gardens would lie abandoned until 1952. By then, Ohioan Julius “Junkie” Fleischmann had discovered Naples and had set his sights on developing this “summerland in wintertime” into a sophisticated, cultured town. The Fleischmann Yeast heir bought the property and invested two years into removing debris, rebuilding the plantings, and digging lakes. When it opened in 1954 as Caribbean Gardens, guests were greeted by tropical birds. Its most colorful chapter began when expedition leaders and Ohio zoo operators Col. Lawrence and Nancy Jane Tetzlaff—known as Jungle Larry and Safari Jane—began seeking winter quarters for their rare animals. Jungle Larry had turned his lifelong passion for wildlife into an illustrious career. According to the zoo:

“Tetzlaff experienced all manners of animal workfrom doing stunt work for Johnny Weissmuller in the Tarzan films to milking venomous snakes to provide serum for the soldiers in the Pacific Islands.” When the adventurous couple began leasing the property in 1969, they thrilled visitors with educational and conservation documentaries and exhibits of primates, big cats, and other exotic animals amid the lush plants and mature trees. The Tetzlaffs have remained committed to expanding the zoo’s educational and conservation missions. It is accredited by the prestigious Association of Zoos and Aquariums and is an institutional member of the American Association of Zoo Keepers. The youngest Tetzlaff son, Ted, is Naples Zoos’ director of conservation and serves on conservation and zoo boards. In 2004, local voters overwhelmingly approved a referendum to save the 43-acre zoo property after it was eyed for sale and development, and Naples Zoo became a self-sustaining 501(c)(3) charitable organization. As a thank you to the community, the zoo offers Collier County residents free admission on select Saturdays and an annual Collier County Appreciation Day.
