ach year I look forward to this issue. It feeds my soul with such an overwhelming sense of hope and joy. As I leaf through, I am reminded there are so many people in need of assistance, whether it be monetarily, medically, or emotionally. The soul-feeding part is the abundance of selfless, compassionate, and altruistic people in our community who continue to give of themselves in more ways than I can count. Kudos to this generous philanthropic group known as the Naples community. Every one of you is essential to the effort. As you can see by the number of charities in this issue, Collier County has a great need that many are unaware of. One sees our manicured medians and beautiful mansions and can’t imagine that there is misfortune. I think everyone has a trigger-point that makes them feel a little sensitivity for what they have. Mine is my comfy bed with clean sheets. I think about how blessed I am, and that there are people all over the world who don’t have such luxury, and maybe have never even seen a bed. They have never been given the opportunity to rise above poverty or the availability of medical care. Not all are born into it; some have faced adversity for many different reasons, and it could happen to any one of us in the blink of an eye. As parents, one of the most important goals for me and my husband was to raise kind and loving children, with hopes that one day they would give back to society what has been bestowed upon them. I am proud to say I think we‘ve achieved it. Both of our girls are grown now and beginning their careers elsewhere, and I am anxious to see how they will make a difference. Last year at this time I was writing my letter by hand, sitting in an office with no power thanks to Hurricane Irma, marveling at how many people were rallying to help things return to normal. The resiliency that followed over the next few months was astounding. But anyone who has lived here for long knows this community is stocked with givers. I am thrilled to welcome Carla Evans to our team at Palm Beach Media Group as editor of the Naples Charity Register. While putting her first issue together, Carla has seen firsthand what an incredible community we live in. Her fresh perspective gives wonderful insight, and she did an amazing job bringing it all to light. Enjoy.

FROM THE EDITOR

Hello, Naples

ASHLEY MEYER

J

ust about a year ago I relocated to sunny Florida from the Big Apple. I scooped up all my black skirts and blouses and decided to roll the dice, landing just shortly after Irma, when communities were uniting in solidarity and showing the world that, much like New Yorkers, they knew how to come together in a crisis. After unpacking my boots and stilettos, I went to Barnes & Noble and leafed through regional magazines to acquaint myself with the area. When I flipped through Naples Illustrated, I was blown away by its editorial content and quality. “Wait a minute,” I thought. “I am in Florida, right?” As serendipity had it, I was fortunate enough to find a position at Palm Beach Media Group that includes serving as the editor of the Naples Charity Register, and while I knew little about covering philanthropy, I took the Evelyn Wood approach to catch up. Never have I witnessed such genuine dedication and sincere empathy toward the underprivileged than here in Naples. What surprises me most is that people with such means and reach give so much of their time and resources to families and children in need. They could just write a check and feel gratified. But no, not Naples. That’s not your style. From the Naples Winter Wine Festival, which has raised more than $176 million for children in need, with up to 200 volunteers, to smaller and no less dedicated charities, the philanthropy in Naples is unprecedented and, quite frankly, humbling. In “Sweet Charity” (page 34), we explore the generosity of local restaurants that give back on a daily basis, serving up hours of time and endless resources to help their neighbors and the community. Check out the magnificent “Water World” (page 36) bursting with color and glamour. This jewelry feature provides a bit of splendor and fantasy to embellish the smartly dressed philanthropist, with a tacit understanding that underneath all the bling and festivities, the kernel of charity is never forgotten. In fact, it illuminates in every participant. No one neglects the purpose and goals of each event: to help those in need—genuflecting to the good of the human spirit and reaching out a hand while asking nothing in return. It is my privilege to produce the Naples Charity Register for all of our readers, bringing awareness to the myriad charity events happening throughout the season. This year we have more than 100 events to choose from. Mark the date for your favorite cause; although with all of the incredible organizations, it will be a tough choice. Thank you, Naples, for the warm welcome. I look forward to being continuously dazzled by your generosity and philanthropic spirit.

with a Purpose

High season is gala season in Naples. As the weather cools, residents dress in their finest and gather at themed events to raise funds for worthy causes. By Rona Gindin

Latchkey League

Good Time: Latchkey League’s Roaring Twenties Soirée Good Deed: Funding after-school programs for at-risk children The Jazz Age roared into Naples on January 16, 2018, as 125 Latchkey League members and guests gathered for a roaring twenties–themed fundraising gala. The Vineyards Country Club was the setting for this festive winter affair that embraced attire and decor elements from nearly a century ago. In fact, the Great Room was dolled up with Jazz Age adornments, such as black-and-white table linens. Atop each table, a towering glass or cut-crystal vase was filled with a dozen white feather plumes, creating a fitting element of flair. “The look was truly unique,” says Betty Daily, Latchkey League president. The wardrobe was part of the fun. Women arrived donning boas or flapper dresses—some vintage—with elbow-length gloves. Their gentleman escorts played their parts sporting fedoras and even black shirts with white ties. Musician Dick Hyman, who has more than 100 albums to his name, enhanced the atmosphere by performing period music on the piano for 26

a full 90 minutes. Cab Calloway and Cole Porter classics were among the repertoire. At one point, Sheila Zellers (who with her husband, Tim, owns Tamiami Ford, Hyundai, and Genesis, a major sponsor of the event) joined in by singing. While enjoying the music, participants perused the silent auction items. Top bidders went home with restaurant gift cards, imported wine, and antiques such as an English teapot and brass candlesticks. The silent auction alone raised $10,000. The proceeds will help the nonprofit Latchkey League, which supports after-school activities for at-risk children in the Naples area who might otherwise return from school to empty homes. Its efforts include grants to the Fran Cohen Youth Center at the Salvation Army, which opened in April 2017; New Horizons, an after-school learning program; and New Beginnings, an alternative learning facility that gives struggling Collier County school children a second chance.

African penguins were the guests of honor at the “Penguins in Paradise” Black and White Ball.

Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens

Good Time: Naples Zoo’s Black and White Ball Good Deed: Rebuilding the Zoo after hurricane damage, and raising awareness about African penguins For one evening, the Naples Zoo was transformed from merely a home for exotic animals into an elegant venue for a formal gala. In an expanse surrounded by lush greenery including shady banyan trees, ladies and gentlemen dressed elegantly in black-tie attire and gathered for cocktails, dinner, and animal interactions. Their purpose was threefold: to help fund the rebuilding of the Naples Zoo, which suffered $700,000 in damages during Hurricane Irma; to construct an animal hospital; and to increase awareness about the plight of African penguins. “Guests got a first exclusive preview of Penguins in Paradise, our new traveling African penguin exhibit,” says Courtney Jolly, director of marketing and public relations. “The penguins are critically endangered. There were more than 2 million in the wild, and now there are only 50,000.” The evening brought a bit of glamour to the jungle, thanks to event chairs Terry and Bob Edwards, and Jody and Gerald Lippes. As guests 28

arrived in their tuxedoes and gowns, a sloth and serval other small animals greeted them. Next, golf carts transported celebrants to the Rainforest Grove, where they posed for pictures with African penguins while keepers shared the story of the animals’ decreased population. Once the cocktail hour wound down, guests watched a short video about African penguins and enjoyed a plated dinner. The November 10, 2017, event raised $477,000. In addition to repairing damaged exhibits and teaching animal lovers about African penguins, the monies were directed to the 7,500-square-foot Glass Animal Hospital, which is currently under construction. “Naples Zoo is the only accredited zoo in Florida without an animal hospital on site,” Jolly says. “Animal welfare is a top priority, and the Glass Animal Hospital will ensure the very best possible care for our growing population.” The animal hospital’s opening will complete Phase 1 of the zoo’s $25 million capital campaign.

American Red Cross Southern Gulf Chapter Good Time: Centennial Celebration & Gala Good Deed: Providing humanitarian support following local disasters

Lee County turned 100 in 2017, so the region’s Red Cross chapter, likewise a century old, celebrated with a one-time Centennial Celebration & Gala that raised more than $300,000. On March 9, 2018, 360 guests sporting gowns and tuxedoes arrived at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, Naples, and were escorted to the Grand Pavilion by Red Cross volunteers. Two red-and-white emergency response vehicles were parked on the adjacent green. Attendees could step into the tented area’s square bar and lounge for cocktails, then visit the trucks for a tour. Above the bar hung an artful statement piece of branches, greenery, and flowers. “It was their tribute to Hurricane Irma and the damage it did locally,” explains Jill Palmer, executive director. The event venue is white, yet chair Elizabeth Star had her design team deck it out in red, fuschia, and turquoise. “This was the most over-thetop, breathtaking event decor I’ve ever seen,” says Palmer. Upon entering the dining area, guests danced for a bit and found

their seats for a video presentation about the Red Cross’ mission. An honor guard ceremony with local firefighters and ROTC students preceded the presentation. Dinner was served, then humanitarian awards were given. Next, a second video explained how Red Cross emergency response vehicles are used, since the first $211,000 raised was earmarked for replacements. Participants learned how the trucks are the vehicle, literally, by which volunteers serve food, support residents whose homes have caught fire, bring help during hurricanes, and assist with fighting wildfires. During a Fund the Need auction, guests pledged cash donations by raising their paddles and giving generously, some as much as $25,000. “We were thrilled to educate people on what the Red Cross does,” adds Palmer. “For example, whether you live in a trailer or a multimillion dollar home on the Gulf of Mexico, the Red Cross will be there whenever there is a disaster.”

GIVING WISELY

What’s in a Name?

A charitable plan with naming rights presents donors with a slice of immortality and a gift that keeps on giving for generations By Judy Martel

In his 1889 seminal book, The Gospel of Wealth, industrialist Andrew Carnegie urges the rich to live modestly and give generously. Today, the Carnegie tradition lives on through thousands of philanthropic works bearing his name, including free public libraries, foundations, public trusts, and universities. Donors have been putting their personal brand on charity since the earliest efforts to develop the New World. The country’s oldest college, Harvard, was named after John Harvard, who left his library and half his estate to the institution upon his death in 1638. These days, it might take a little more than the bequest of a personal library to buy the naming rights to a university. But with organizations becoming more creative, philanthropists will find myriad opportunities beyond brick-and-mortar projects to publicly identify their financial largesse, including lecture series, exhibits, landscaping, scholarships, and more. Case in point: Two Northwestern University trustees and their wives endowed the salary for the men’s basketball head coach, now named the Sullivan-Ubben Head Men’s Basketball Coaching position. Donors who want to lend their name to a cause typically seek public recognition of their passions, says Rick Schneider, senior vice president of advancement at the National Center for Family Philanthropy. “And for families, especially those with a foundation that includes multiple generations, there is a sense of enduring legacy and also inspiration for the community,” he adds. On the flip side, there are donors who believe giving anonymously is virtuous, representing true charitable intent without the ego-boosting public fanfare. But Schneider says most don’t seek naming opportunities for 32

the recognition alone. Rather, it’s considered a benefit that comes with supporting a cause they believe in—often to the tune of tens of millions of dollars. And because of their popularity, naming rights are usually marketed and “sold” to donors as such, so they know upfront how much their name will cost. Finding appropriate naming opportunities to match a donor’s financial ability and passion is the job of the fundraiser, says Bill Stanczykiewicz, director of The Fund Raising School at the Lilly Family Institute of Philanthropy at Indiana University-Purdue University. If they are not carefully managed, naming opportunities can garner negative repercussions. Multiple donors competing for one major prospect—as

Carnegie Hall, New York City

in a building—will likely result in a trail of disappointed contributors. Before a campaign is launched, Stanczykiewicz counsels fundraisers to examine every need associated with the project and break it down into potential funding proposals. In the case of capital disbursements, the building itself is typically at the top of the list as the most visible, enduring, and expensive part of the project. From there, the remainder of the organization’s needs are identified and divided into individual opportunities—some ongoing and others one-time expenditures. With thoughtful planning, there’s something to match every contributor’s financial ability and interest to ensure a lasting legacy.

These three thriving Naples restaurants don’t just offer spectacular cuisine, they also provide large helpings of support to the local community Mario Mellusi, Angela Manley, Donovan Smith, Ingrid Aielli

SEA SALT The seafood restaurant Sea Salt and its congenial co-owner, Ingrid Aielli, are well-known throughout Naples. What may not be as well-known is Aielli’s generosity to the local community. “I feel very blessed that I have the opportunity to help others,” says Aielli, who’s also the restaurant’s manager. “It brings more meaning to my life, too.” Her passion for giving back extends to many causes. One personal favorite is the Nane Kimijan Memorial Scholarship Fund, which honors her late brother by providing college scholarships to Naples high school students; since the fund was established, it’s helped 30 boys and girls attend Florida colleges and universities. Besides education, programs that help women and children are also close to Aielli’s heart, including the Shelter for Abused Women and Children and its capital campaign for a new center, as well as the Make-A-Wish Foundation, whose “startender” events feature local celebrities mixing drinks to raise money. 34

When Hurricane Irma caused death and destruction across Southwest Florida in 2017, Sea Salt hosted several fundraisers, including those benefiting the American Red Cross; the David Lawrence Center, which provides mental health treatment services; and the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, a National Audubon Society nature preserve. A native of former Czechoslovakia, Aielli began aiding charitable causes in 1998 in Washington, D.C., where she and her chef husband, Fabrizio, owned an upscale Italian restaurant, Goldoni. “There was a fundraiser for a local children’s hospital,” she recalls. “One of my clients was on the board, and he asked if we were willing to help.” They were. “We did a nice dinner and a live auction and raised a few thousand dollars that went toward opening additional units of the hospital.” The event went so well that the Aiellis hosted the fundraiser for several years after that. When they moved to Southwest Florida a few years later, giving back had become a part of their professional and personal lives. For their first act of charitable giving, they chose the Naples Winter Wine Festival, where Fabrizio was invited to cook as one of the featured chefs. Under Aielli’s watchful eye, the giving continues year after year, cause after cause. “I’m truly helping my neighbors, and it feels very natural,” she says. “There is still so much that needs to be done.”

TOMMY BAHAMA RESTAURANT & BAR While the atmosphere of the island-themed Tommy Bahama is casual and relaxed, its commitment to giving back to the community is serious. Case in point: In 2006, the restaurant created the Garden of Hope and Courage, a botanical sanctuary in downtown Naples. Its mission was to provide a tranquil setting filled with flowers, plants, and even a reflecting pond for the patients, families, and medical staff of the adjacent community hospital. What accounts for such generosity? A com

mitment to making life better for their friends and neighbors. “Naples is a very tight-knit community,” explains Richard Bianchi, the restaurant’s general manager. “Helping our community is helping those we are close to. Every donation is for a cause that can be traced back to home.” For example, Tommy Bahama donates to school fundraisers because it impacts local children. It donates to the Collier County Honor Flight to pay tribute to the region’s grandfathers who served in World War II. The restaurant’s charitable giving is diverse, from the local chapter of the Special Olympics to the Coconut Classic Golf Tournament, which raised $46,000 in 2017 and benefited the Children’s Advocacy Center of Collier County, among other organizations. “It is gratifying knowing that our donations are going toward great causes in the community,” says Bianchi. “Seeing the impact and growth of these organizations is such a wonderful and positive experience that sparks a desire to do even more.”

When locals and vacationers crave a juicy steak, they head to Shula’s, a restaurant that has consistently won “best of” awards, most recently from Open Table and Wine Spectator. But outstanding beef isn’t the only thing Shula’s serves. Through its charitable giving, it also serves the Naples community. The employees are a big part of that effort. “Shula’s stresses the importance of giving back to the community,” says Jeff Jerome, the director of marketing and sales, “[and] that being a leader in hospitality also means being a leader in community service.” The restaurant’s employees are encouraged to serve and support local organizations and charities and given guidelines to follow. Much of the group’s aid benefits women and children. Last March, the restaurant hosted the Earl Morrall Celebrity Golf Tournament, which raised more than $55,000 for the Shelter for Abused Women and Children. Shula’s helped support the Ricky King Children’s Fund at its Wines Around the World event in April, where donors gave more than $190,000. In May, the restaurant provided food for a Dress Collection party cruise, where donations totaled almost $10,000 and went to the Pace Center for Girls. The restaurant has also been a longtime supporter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Naples Art Association. “Words cannot describe the pleasure and pride our team members experience when we can help improve our neighbors’ lives in even the smallest way,” says Jerome. They’re opportunities to be inspired and engage with friends and artists. We love being able to connect the community here. That’s how we’ve been refining the art of bringing Naples together… for over six decades.

Ladies Who Lunch

VANESSA ROGERS

The Fourteenth Annual Hats in the Garden Luncheon at the Naples Botanical Garden was a sight to behold. Set amidst lush greenery, fragrant gardenias, and sunny yellows, were tablescapes decked out in chic Babe Paley style. After mingling in the garden with millinery that would make the royals rich with envy, guests were ushered under a tent and served a gourmet lunch by chef Jack Raben (everyone was buzzing about the sweet corn soup with Gulf lobster, chive batons, and chili oil). After lunch, Saks Fifth Avenue presented a runway show of the season’s newest creations as attendees indulged their sweet tooth with some Key lime pie and macaroons. One of the most popular fundraisers in Naples, the event raised an astounding $470,000 to benefit the Naples Botanical Garden in its Replant and Regrow initiative, post-Hurricane Irma.
