OPEN HEARTS FOR THE ARTS

Our town should be starting to bustle, with more traffic and larger crowds in res taurants and stores. However, in Hurricane Ian’s wake, there is much uncertainty, much to clean up, and in some circumstances, much to rebuild. For all of you ad versely impacted by the storm, we at Naples Illustrated send out our thoughts and prayers. And just like so many others in our tight-knit community, we are eager to help with restoration efforts in all ways possible.

While there’s no minimizing the catastrophic effects of Ian, perhaps this issue of Naples Illustrated, dedicated to arts and culture, will provide a much-needed distrac tion, as well as a reminder of how amazing our city and its inhabitants are, as we spotlight a handful of talented, accomplished individuals who have excelled across the arts.

On this issue’s cover is Dario Campanile, a part-time Naples resident who has been painting for more than six decades. Born in Rome, Campanile has spent a life time creating remarkable art. What’s most incredible—in my estimation, anyway—is his proficiency in myriad artistic styles, including Realism, Surrealism, Impression ism, and now, Abstractionism. Few have the ability to master with such broad strokes, but Campanile, who is incredibly humble and gracious, has made the most of his art-filled life. Flip to page 100 to learn more about this creative genius, in cluding his encounters with Salvador Dalí, Giorgio de Chirico, and the Dalai Lama.

Speaking of genius, we’re also excited to profile best-selling author Scott Turow and his wife, Adriane, in this issue. Scott, who has penned such titles as Presumed Innocent, The Burden of Proof, and The Last Trial, has enjoyed a successful career as both an attorney and writer. Adriane is an attorney, too, and the couple split their time between Naples and Greater Chi cago. Read more about the Turows and learn about Scott’s new novel, Suspect, starting on page 108.

It’s not easy to bust into Broadway, but there’s a three-time Tony Award–winning producer in our midst in Naples. Many people know Sandi Moran and her husband, Tom, as committed philanthropists in our community. In fact, the new Gulf shore Playhouse mainstage will bear their surname as the Moran Mainstage. Over and above philanthropic endeavors, how ever, Sandi is an above-the-line Broadway producer, guiding the creative and artistic direction of performances. Beginning on page 114, read more about this beautiful, big-hearted theatrical enthusiast.

As for hearts, mine is rather heavy as I write this while our community recovers from Hurricane Ian’s destruction. If you’re looking for ways to help, the Collier Community Foundation’s Collier Comes Together Hurricane Relief Fund (colliercf.org) is a reputable option to consider. All donations are distributed to nonprofits serving victims and their families. We hope you enjoy this issue of Naples Illustrated. Thanksgiving is upon us this month—what a fantastic reminder that we have plenty to be grateful for, even through tough times.

With heartfelt sincerity,

CAPITALIZING ON CREATIVITY

Sarah Penner is the New York Times and internationally best-sell ing author of The Lost Apothecary Throughout her 13-year career in corporate America, Penner craved a creative outlet. One day she finally heeded the urge to write a book and applied the same discipline to writing that she did to analyzing spreadsheets.

This year’s Friends of the Library of Collier County wel comes Penner, who resides in St. Petersburg, to an in-person author spotlight event at Sugden Commu nity Theatre on November 3. Turn the page for a conversation with Penner, and learn how she success fully swapped numbers for letters. (collier-friends.org; sarahpenner. com) –Gaylene Salomons

CAPITALIZING ON CREATIVITY

NI: What is your formal education?

Penner: I have no formal writing education. No MFA. No English degree. I went to the University of Kansas and graduated with a degree in finance. [As a young businesswoman, Penner traveled the world, writing only in her free time; she admits she did take some online writing classes before attempting to write her first novel.] In early 2021, upon the great reception of my debut novel, The Lost Apothecary, I resigned from my day job. I’m now thrilled to call myself a full-time author.

Are you an avid reader? A sometime reader?

I read all the time. It’s a must for those of us working in this industry. I mostly read books that haven’t yet been released. I’m often asked to review forthcoming novels; most of these are historical fiction, mystery, or magical realism. It’s a great perk to this job, but also stressful—more deadlines to adhere to.

Were you a bookworm as a child? If so, what books did you enjoy reading?

I was a bookworm, yes, and I also loved to journal. I loved Nancy Drew books, the Sweet Valley High series, and The Baby-Sitters Club.

What do you enjoy reading today? Do you have a favorite genre?

When I do read for pleasure, I absolutely love narrative nonfiction. My favorite author of all time is Erik Larson, and of his books, my favorite is Dead Wake. I have a strange obsession with maritime and seafaring stories. Other favorites in this subgenre include [Nathaniel] Philbrick’s In the Heart of the Sea and [Julian] Sancton’s Madhouse at the End of the Earth

Where do you get your inspiration for your novels?

I’ve been inspired by countless authors. I love Fiona Davis’ use of a dual timeline and the fact that her historical fiction is accessible to a wide audience without feeling tense or verbose. I also love Ira Levin’s prose—namely the way he relays sensory detail with only a few words. Some of my earliest historical fiction favorites were written by Ken Follett, Philippa Gregory, and Elizabeth Kostova. I also love Erin Morgenstern’s writing style as seen in The Night Circus

Writing a period piece necessitates research. Where did you get your information?

For The Lost Apothecary, researching the many herbal and homespun remedies was a time-consuming albeit entertaining task. I visited the British Library, sifting through old manuscripts and drug-

gist diaries. I reviewed digitized pharmacopoeias, and I studied extensively some well-known poisoning cases in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. I was surprised by the number of plants and herbs that are highly toxic, and I was fascinated while reading about the clever, if ineffective, remedies used by the predecessors of modern-day pharmacists.

Do you have a set schedule for writing that you follow every day?

It depends on where I’m at in the writing process. Right now, I’m focused on early publicity for The London Séance Society [Penner’s second and forthcoming novel], as well as drafting the pitch for my third book. So, my days look different, and I don’t follow a schedule. Once I begin working on my third book, I will be much more rigid with my routine. I will spend a minimum of three to four hours at my desk every morning.

Do you love what you do?

Absolutely. I truly feel like the luckiest person in the world. Every day I interact with readers and booksellers. I travel throughout the world to talk about my creative work. I read extensively, including lots of great books that aren’t yet available. And I get paid to make up wild stories full of twists and strong women. What’s not to love? —G.S.

A New Electric Vehicle STAR

A futuristic looking fleet of electric vehicles recently landed at the Volvo dealership in North Naples, courtesy of Polestar, the Swedish premium electric performance car brand.

Scandinavian sensibilities reign in this vehicle, starting with the no-nonsense nomenclature.

The Polestar 1, a coupe, is a hybrid; all others will be fully electric. Their first fully electric volume car, the Polestar 2, is a sporty, five-door liftback. The Polestar 3 is designed to be a premium, luxury SUV—due out by year’s end. Stay tuned for the Polestar Precept (aka Polestar 4)—an electric concept, four-door super car expected to launch in 2024—as well as an electric performance roadster planned for a 2026 debut.

An exclusive retail location called Polestar Space (the brand’s terminology for showroom) is currently being built in Naples; a digital-first retail model, allowing customers to coordinate a test drive or order a vehicle from the comfort of their homes, is available online. Five Polestar Spaces are planned for Florida; a total of 23 are planned for the United States.

All Polestar Spaces will look similar and will offer more intimacy than the traditional vehicle showroom. Customers can visit and speak with a Polestar specialist, experience a vehicle in person, and take a test drive.

The Polestar—with a vegan interior option—shines in a post-gasoline era and promises longer driving distances between charges. The Polestar 2 starts at $48,400 for the single-motor model and at $51,900 for the dualmotor (all-wheel drive) model. (polestar.com) –G.S.

Collier Community Foundation Reactivates its HURRICANE RELIEF FUND

As residents of coastal zones, we know that impending threats of tropical storms and hurricanes are always possible. Simply stated, it’s a reality of Florida living. However, when a treacherous storm like Hurricane Ian strikes, even the most protected and most prepared can be left exposed and defenseless. While rebuilding and restoration efforts are well underway, there are many individuals in Collier County still suffering from the aftermath of Ian.

The good news is, there are ways to seek help—and philanthropic channels through which to provide it. If you’re looking for assistance or for ways to assist victims of the devastating storm, the Collier Community Foundation is a great organization to consider.

A long-trusted and highly respected area nonprofit entity, the Collier Community Foundation, serving our community since 1985, works to provide aid to vulnerable citizens in Southwest Florida. Immediately after Ian’s landfall, the foundation sprang into action, reactivating its Collier Comes Together Hurricane Relief Fund, which was operational following Hurricane Irma, too.

The fund assists those affected, as well as nonprofits supporting victims. It also works to make certain the support of donors reaches intended causes quickly and efficiently. Any Collier Comes Together funds not used for Hurricane Ian relief will be returned to the Your passion. Your Collier. Crisis & Disaster Relief Fund to ensure the Collier Community Foundation is prepared for future events that affect our community. (colliercf.org) –Jane E. Enos

A multigenerational day of enjoyment and a cherished tradition, the Naples Fitness Challenge featured more than 500 athletes competing in triathlon, duathlon, and relay-based events. The event supports a healthy lifestyle and provides a day of fun and fitness to families and individuals of all ages. This year’s event was held on the grounds of the future Naples Beach Club in Naples, the location of the former Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club, and was organized by Y Not Tri, a Southwest Florida organization promoting triathlon events and clinics. —J. What influenced you to become a designer?

Since I was a little girl, I was influ enced by my mom’s fabrics from her interior design projects, pieces of arts, the beauty of color, Colombian biodiversity, traveling, and discover ing the diverse strong women from around the globe. I have always been very visually sensitive, and I knew that through fashion design I was going to be able to express that exuberance that filled my soul, to mix different cultures, and to share their magic and the Latin flair with women around the world.

Your designs go beyond fashion. Describe your 360-degree approach when creating a collection.

I design with heart, and my clothes are born with purpose. ... In the creative process, I always start with color. Then comes the mood and inspiration. The print illustra tions are a crucial element. Then come silhouettes. ... We prioritize [repurposing] our deadstock, and we always take into account our Indigenous communities or artisanal associations to create our accesso ries [via] hand-in-hand collaboration with them.

Our vertically integrated business model implies that 90 percent of the production is done in-house in my hometown of Cali, Colombia, translating into many stories and development opportunities behind each dress. Being able to bring a positive impact to the lives of the 436 people (78 percent women) who work at Johanna Ortiz is definitely our major achievement.

What are your core practices in keeping the brand sustainable?

We truly believe in the value of doing the right thing and having eth ics at the center of everything we do. We honor our JO family every day and give them the tools to transform their realities through education, housing, recreation, health, and mental health support. We are committed to making our products locally, generating social inclusion, and building capacities, [while] also recognizing and enhancing our tra

ditional handcrafts and techniques. Furthermore, we work in harmony with the environment. We value our biodiversity as our endless source of inspiration and are [committed] to preserving it. That’s why, for example, we are planting more than 2,000 trees in the Amazon in partner ship with the native communities.

Describe your new home collection.

Expect to travel to the most magi cal Colombian towns through our home collection. The respect and appreciation for local communities’ ancestral crafts and knowledge is a crucial part of the social purpose of the company and one of the most relevant attributes in our pieces, which are hand-in-hand creations with 23 Indigenous communities and artisanal associations around Colombia, where we impact more than 260 women.

What were the inspirations behind your Resort 2022 collection?

REAL TALK WITH...

Johanna Ortiz

The Colombian designer talks inspiration, culture, diversity, and sustainability

The silhouettes this season are easy but sophisticated. They are festive through playful necklines, plunging back-lines, sensuous cut outs, and joyful mini dresses. As part of the Johanna Ortiz DNA, versatility and sustainability are present.

As always, the Johanna Ortiz prints are the perfect melting pot of cultures. Exuberant landscapes of the Colombian Orinoco Moriche palm trees and regal Yarumo me dicinal trees set the mood for this collection—a fascinating balance alongside Ankaran wax prints and Japanese-inspired kimonos and tu nics that come to life in tropical fall ing leaves and Kasuri ikat patterns.

In our continued effort to be more sustainable, responsible, and respectful every day, the materi als include organic pima cotton knitwear, printed eco-friendly cot tons, linens, and viscose jacquards. There is also the more traditional silk crepe de chine and charmeuse, both in solids and prints. For the evening elements, [we] introduced printed velvet and glowing paillette textures that, when playfully paired with feathers, give a sense of tex ture, movement, and shine.

DESIGN AND DECOR FOR LUXURIOUS LIVING IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | NOVEMBER 2022 69
ALTHOUGH NAPLES HAS NOT YET EMBRACED MODERNIST ARCHITECTURE LIKE ITS FLORIDA NEIGHBORS, A NEW INFLUX OF RESIDENTS IS DEMANDING MORE AU COURANT IDEAS WHEN IT COMES TO HOME DESIGN NAPLES MODERN?
HOME
The pool and outdoor spaces of this custom home by Stofft Cooney Architects embrace the sleek and linear aesthetic of modern architecture, a style that Naples has been a bit reluctant to adopt. PHOTO COURTESY OF LORI HAMILTON

As modern architectural design spreads like a heatwave across Miami and Fort Lauderdale—and has simmered on high in Sarasota for 80 years—Naples has taken a wait-and-see approach to embracing the style.

If you look hard enough, you can find mid-century gems that have dodged the wrecking ball, such as the highly visible Hedges Family Eco-Center at Naples Preserve. More recently, Richard Meier’s groundbreaking estate with a dramatic butterfly roof in Port Royal caused an uproar in the upscale enclave when it was built 25 years ago. But as flamboyantly ornate Mediterranean manses—the dominant juggernaut for two decades—fade into the past, Naples’ collective taste is still evolving.

Today’s designers and homeowners informally call Naples’ prevalent style “coastal contemporary” or “transitional.” Resi dential and commercial buildings, inside and out, are embracing simplicity in the details, clean lines, generous fenestration that invites the outdoors in, and white/light palettes tempered with warm materials and textures. The “coastal” aspect addresses both

the town’s seaside location and its original cottages.

Jon Kukk, of Kukk Architecture & Design, says his office is work ing on a half dozen homes that “are very contemporary, and I think that’s a big switch.” Both Kukk and John Cooney, a partner at Stofft Cooney Architects, say the community’s aesthetics are being driven by an influx of new residents. Historically, second-home buyers who eventually retired permanently in Naples were from the Midwest and brought along their Midwest design sensibilities. The demo graphics are skewing younger today and new residents are fleeing high taxes, cold weather, and dense urban populations in California, the Northeast, Europe, and Canada, “so we’ve seen a large transfor mation in the style of architecture,” says Cooney. “Naples is definitely on the map nationwide and worldwide. There’s a growing reputa tion for what Naples has to offer. And they all bring a certain flavor of what they’re looking for.”

Cooney, who has been with Stofft Cooney since 1996, also ob serves that the massive Mediterraneans of yesteryear were rarely used, formal showpieces that opened their doors for holiday en

tertaining. “They were party houses,” he says. The owners “would come a few months of the year.” Today, however, homebuyers are staying longer or even year-round as they discover that Naples is a relaxed place to work and play, so they are looking for functional ity and comfort. Two-story-high rooms with fireplaces are no lon ger in vogue. Spacious great rooms with lower ceilings and folding glass wall systems that bring in natural light have become the norm. Cooney is doing more “flat roofs and cantilevers than we’ve ever had.” West Indies architecture—whether British, French, or Dutch influenced—is both popular and fitting for Naples, which shares the same tropical climate, says Cooney. Clients typically start there but say, “Give me a modern version of it,” he says. “That’s where transi tional comes in, from traditional to more contemporary. I hear that word quite a bit; it has kind of stuck around.”

Of the 3,000 projects he’s overseen in Naples during the past two and a half decades, Matthew Kragh, president of MHK Architecture & Planning, can count in one hand the number of modern proj ects his clients have requested. However, 99 percent of his clients

NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | NOVEMBER 2022 71

are looking for a modern version of an Old Naples cottage— sometimes old-timey outside and contemporary inside. “We have literally six to 10 new clients in the office every other day, and they’re wanting more cottage-y, more coastal, more traditional,” he says.

One area where sleek, modern design is making headway in Naples is in multifamily and mixed-use buildings with com mercial on the first floor and residential units above. Kragh points to 850 Central, which was fully occupied in its first season. The property in Midtown Naples offers 22 residences (as well as multiple amenities), all of which would feel right at home in minimalist-loving Miami. It’s obvious condo dwellers are game for the look, so why not others?

Time will tell if Naples fully embraces modern architec ture or even creates its own regional brand of it, such as Sarasota Modern. “Naples is a melting pot of people from all over the world, and they’re going to bring their own style with their own twist,” says Cooney. “We’re highly custom in that regard.” «

DREAM IN COLOR

USE THE PSYCHOLOGY OF COLOR TO CREATE A MOOD-INDUCING ROOM AT HOME

The color blue has become the little black dress of coastal design—a proven go-to that always delivers. Just like its wardrobe equivalent, blue is flattering to all shapes and sizes of interiors, can be dressed up or down depending on how it is styled, and creates a timeless look. More than that, blue evokes feelings of calm, peace, and serenity. But blue is not alone in generating a psychological response. Color psychology purports that all colors trigger emotions and can be used to create a certain atmospheric mood. With that in mind, perhaps it’s time to stop only singing the blues and discover what melodies other colors can compose.

Green

Evocative of nature, the color green helps reduce anxiety and balances the mind and mood. Similar to the proven benefits of spending time outdoors, green reinforces feelings of restoration, well-being, and peacefulness. Green’s calming effect may be due to the fact that the color lies in the middle of the visible spectrum, meaning the human eye sees it better than any other color. With less strain to perceive the color, our nervous system relaxes when processing it. As an added bonus, studies have shown that green allows us to think more creatively and enhances cognitive performance.

Purple

A hybrid of cool, calming blue and warm, energizing red, purple can have very different effects based on its shade. Purple in its darkest tones, such as a deep plum, is sophisticated, rich, and dramatic. In contrast, lighter hues like lavender can be restful, cozy, and sometimes lighthearted. Purple is the color of an introvert, used to encourage creativity and contemplation, and communicate luxury.

HOW TO USE IT:

Softer purples can add a welcoming and friendly vibe to a hallway, an entry area, or even a communal space like a living room. Deeper purple can be used as an accent or main design attraction to elevate a space with richness or add drama to an architecturally simple room.

HOW TO USE IT:

Green is well-suited for virtually every space in a home. This is one color to consider going all-in on with regard to the amount used and the variety of shades combined. Given its cognitive boost, consider it for a home office.

Yeow

Yellow is an energizing color linked to feelings of happiness, optimism, and spontaneity. Studies have shown that the vibrant hue can also increase mental activity and muscle energy. The key to capturing its positive and uplifting nature is choosing a yellow that is not too bright (which can spark agitation) or too dull (which can cause feelings of illness).

HOW TO USE IT:

Yellow works as a sun substitute in spaces that have a lack of natural light and looks good in a kitchen or bathroom. However, yellow is a mercurial beast. Too much yellow exposure can lead to loss of focus, forgetfulness, and may even overstimulate the brain. For maximum positive impact, try yellow in small doses, such as well-chosen accessories or statement furniture pieces.

Pink

Studies have shown that pink can have a calming effect on the nerves and inspire feelings of warmth and comfort. Pink walls radiate a subtle glow that flatters both people and furnishings, making them appear brighter. In recent years, pink’s popularity has skyrocketed with the birth of—and subsequent obsession with—“millennial pink,” a gender-neutral family of colors that includes everything from pinkish beige to muted salmon.

HOW TO USE IT:

X

Given its calming properties, pink is a welcome addition to bedrooms, whether on walls or in bedding and decorative accents. However, it can also add glamour to a dining or living room when thoughtfully incorporated. Or consider it for a primary bathroom: Not only will you be relaxed while getting ready for the day, but its glow will mean you look great while doing so.

The design team at Design West created this posh living room with plenty of substance and shine thanks to metallic artwork and carefully chosen accents. “With this space, our client wanted to feature their existing amber, gold, and gray glass artwork as the focal point of the room,” says Dominique Coffman, vice president of design. “We used shimmering silver and bronze tones along with soft whites to create a light and bright backdrop for the artwork to really pop. Metallic finishes add a touch of elegance, but don’t always have to be the center of attention—when spread evenly throughout a space they can act as a more interesting ‘neutral.’” Naples (dwest.com)

PLANTSCAPING with Container Gardens

CREATIVELY AND INTENTIONALLY ARRANGING GREEN ERY TO CONVEY THEME, MOOD, OR EXPERIENCE

Driftwood Garden Center is a local source for creative container gardens, which offer opportunities to mix a variety of plants in a small space.

With their organic shapes, natural colors, and elegant demeanor, plants are an artful way to style and define outdoor spaces. Framed in a pot, beautiful bouquets of greenery (and flowers) create great art. Cluster these container gardens at your pool’s edge, stagger them across a lanai, or let them stand guard at your front entrance. Whether for hiding unsightly views, adding pri vacy, or just because, container gardens add a bounty of beauty to outdoor surroundings.

As a young girl, Autumn Canning thought she might like to be a florist. Today, she is a certified horticulture professional—a designation she ob tained through the Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association. Canning spends her days working with plants and flowers at Driftwood Garden Center (driftwoodgardencenter.com) in Naples. She’s especially adept at composing con tainer gardens for purchase off the shelf but also enjoys assisting clients who want to do their own plantscaping.

Canning advises on all aspects, like what kind of pot to use. Options are plentiful, from wood to metal to rugged plastic to ceramic and terra-cot ta. “We have hundreds of pots to offer,” she says.

Sometimes an eclectic assortment works best for a unique plantscape. She then asks about the view: “Will you see all 360 degrees of the pot, or will you just view the pot from one angle?” Taller plants typically are placed in the back when a planter is viewed from the front, allowing the greenery at the front to cascade over the pot’s edge.

Canning recommends varying the texture of the plants. “Asparagus fern is fine and looks good mixed with coarser textures,” she explains. Color is also key. “Consider bloom cycles,” says Can ning. “Do you want everything blooming at one time, or do you want some flowering plants to lie dormant while others burst with color?” Our sea son is opposite to northern climates, she reminds, noting that impatiens and geraniums bloom in our winter when visitors are in residence.

Container gardens afford an opportunity to mix a variety of plants in a small space; vegetables even sprout up in some of Canning’s creations.

Flowers are both beautiful and serve a purpose, attracting pollinators—like honeybees—or pro viding a much-needed refreshment stop for hum mingbirds. About a pot garden’s life span, Can ning says, “they will last a few years.” Although

they require little maintenance, they do need trimming about every six months.

Jack Barnwell, owner of C3 Gardens (c3gar dens.com) in Naples, is an award-winning landscape architect who designs gardens in both Mackinac Island, Michigan, and Southwest Florida. Barnwell is also the author of The Gardens of Mackinac Island, a book that provides inspiration for creating inviting and relaxing outdoor spaces.

Barnwell is fond of utilizing pot gardens in his work, so much so that he invented AquaPots—ceramic, self-watering containers. With a complete watering and fertilizing system integrated into each planter, his patented design offers a practical solution to plant art. There is no risk of overwatering, and therefore, no leaking on or staining of tiles. The pots are portable and can be moved around the yard (although most require a team of workers to relocate). They are available in a variety of sizes, colors, and designs, from matte black to fire engine red, matching any decor.

Many of Barnwell’s designs are documented on YouTube videos. In one of the creations he shares, he combined ruby cordyline, bromeliads, and a twisted money tree. Tucked in the center is a purple orchid—an air plant. In another video, Barnwell chose what he calls a thriller—a majesty palm—to anchor a pot gar-

den he created for a tropical climate, adding a red sister cordyline, a caricature plant, a philodendron, and more. Stuffed full, the container looks best when the foliage is woven together— usually with a gardener’s fingers. Barnwell tops the planter off with Spanish moss and allows it to spill over the edge. A spritz of leaf shine for a glossy finish provides the final touch.

Endless design options for container gardens are possible when you wish to sweeten the pot and personalize organic art in your yard. «

INSIDER’S ZIMBABWE

THE NATION OF ZIMBABWE IS ONE OF AFRICA’S BEST-KEPT SAFARI SECRETS. HERE, WE SHARE EXPERT INSIGHT INTO HOW TO BEST IMMERSE YOURSELF WITHIN THE COUNTRY’S EXTENSIVE NATURAL TREASURES AND SWEEPING CON SERVATION INITIATIVES.

ALTERNATE BETWEEN SAFARI ON LAND AND OVER WATER AT RUCKOMECHI CAMP

Fronted by the Zambezi River, Zimba bwe’s Mana Pools National Park comprises 2,612 square miles of unspoiled mahoganyand baobab-studded forests, river islands, channels, and lakes. This exquisite patch work of woodlands and waterways fosters a riveting safari experience that’s equal parts land and water.

To fully appreciate the duality, stay at Wil derness Safaris’ Ruckomechi Camp, where mornings spent spotting lions and buffalo by Land Rover rival afternoons watching hippos and birds by motorized boat. Float past sunbathing crocodiles, preening bee-

eaters, and boisterous elephants, admiring the undulating mountains of the Rift Valley in the horizon. Ruckomechi’s enviable river front location and prolific ana (acacia) trees also make it a preferred spot for elephants and hippos to feed, sleep, and cavort— meaning the safari often unfolds in camp. One afternoon, I even saw a baby elephant stumble on my terrace, with mom sternly redirecting him shortly thereafter.

In terms of design, the 10-suite, tented camp is unfussy and effortlessly chic, min gling earth-toned wood furnishings with sapphire-hued soft goods. It’s truly an idyllic spot for immersing in the magic of Mana Pools. (wilderness-safaris.com)

EMBRACE BEACH VIBES NEAR EARTH’S LARGEST WATERFALL AT MPALA JENA

Less than 10 miles upstream from Victoria Falls—the largest and arguably most spectacu lar waterfall on the planet—intimate waterfront lodge Mpala Jena beautifully commingles Tulum style and safari sensibility. Situated on a sparkling white-sand beach along the Zambezi, the lodge captures a toes-in-the-sand vibe and boho-chic look more commonly associated with trendy oceanic destinations. An interior color scheme of light blues, creams, and earth tones complements transitional indoor-outdoor spaces defined by unfinished wood, straw, and ropework. Meanwhile, Instagram-perfect swings, hammocks, beanbags, and poolside loungers abound, promoting languid, cocktailfilled afternoons in the sun.

But unlike Tulum, this isn’t just a fabulous beach destination. It’s also a safari experience in the heart of Zambezi National Park, where baboons frolic in the sand and trees, elephants charge through camp, and riotous hippos are

natural deterrents to entering the water. Five swoon-worthy suites channel ultra-luxury un der canvas, each flanked by a massive terrace with a private canopied daybed for connecting with nature and stargazing. The juxtaposition of wildlife and beach is truly surreal.

Of course, the initial draw to Mpala Jena is a visit to Victoria Falls, which can be done by foot, boat, bungee cord, helicopter, and more. However, you’ll soon realize Mpala Jena is a secret slice of wild beachfront heaven that’s far more than a home base for waterfall rapture. (greatplainsconservation.com)

WITNESS ONE OF THE LARGEST WILDLIFE RELOCATIONS IN HISTORY

On the edge of Mana Pools National Park, conservation-led outfit Great Plains and its eponymous foundation have embarked on an ambitious initiative to return a 280,000-acre swathe of former hunting grounds to its natural state, inclusive of the wildlife that once freely roamed the land. In creating Sapi Private Reserve, the visionaries behind Great Plains, Dereck and Beverly Joubert, have transformed a private hunting concession into a protected area with an intimate safari camp, Tembo Plains, at its core. Now Great Plains is in the process of relocating more than 3,000 animals from Savé Valley Conservancy in southern

LUXURIATE ON THE ZAMBEZI AT TEMBO PLAINS CAMP

Witnessing the rewilding experience is just one aspect of a stay at Tembo Plains Camp. The other is luxuriating on and along the Zambezi River—and unapologetically so. A total of five tented suites, generously spaced apart, boast prime waterfront positions. Each is a hybrid of canvas and stone, alternating between zipped panels, local stone walls, and Zanzibari embellishments like hand-carved wooden doors. Each suite has its own outdoor shower, plunge pool, and viewing deck with loungers and chairs.

Tembo Plains also has the distinction of being the sole Zimbabwean property within the Relais & Châteaux collection. Like others in this es teemed portfolio, its excellence extends to food and wine. Guests can browse the nearly 100 wines in the enormous cellar, trying as many as they’d like, before and after feasting on multicourse gourmet meals.

Leisure activities center on the Zambezi itself. Enjoy sundowners on a sandbank, try your hand at catching the piranha-like tigerfish, float down the river on a scenic cruise, or get closer to river-crossing elephants by canoe. Overall, Tembo Plains Camp presents a more relaxed pace to safari’s traditional “go, go, go” fervor, a chance to simply admire nature and Zimbabwe’s luxury of space instead of obsessing over your wildlife checklist. Zimbabwe to Sapi, saving them from a governmentproposed cull in the name of wildlife management.

Launched in Summer 2022, the multiyear Project Rewild Zambezi will see more than 400 elephants and other such iconic species as lions, buffalo, painted dogs, and eland transferred to Sapi and the national park (the lack of fences means animals can move freely between the two). Guests at Tembo Plains have the rare chance to observe this massive conservation effort in action, learning how naturalists accomplish such a relocation. This process typically takes several weeks per animal and includes carefully introducing them to their new environment within a shielded paddock, allowing them to assimilate, and then releasing them. THE ULTIMATE ELEPHANT

A secret of top bird photographers is shooting from a bird hide or blind, a well-camouflaged shelter that facilitates viewing at close quarters. At Little Makalolo in Hwange National Park, this concept has been upsized—way upsized—to create an equivalent for access to the elephants that frequent a permanent water hole near

camp. The so-called “log pile” (an open-air stickwork structure that fits four to six comfortably) is as close as you’ll ever get to these pachyderms in the wild.

Skilled guides know how to take full advantage of this one-of-akind theater. First, sneak in before the elephants arrive in the early afternoon. Then, watch them drink, bathe, play, and wrestle, all at eye-level, often for hours. Considering about half of Zimbabwe’s elephant population resides in Hwange—a number that currently hovers around 43,000—encounters are typically epic. One day, I lost count at 200.

Back in the Land Rover, anticipate lion sightings aplenty—this is prime real estate for the big cats—and other famed members of The Lion King cast, plus herds of gorgeous sable antelope. The camp itself is comfortable and unpretentious, yet the true luxury here is the wildlife-rich location and immediate animal access. (wilderness-safaris.com) «

CADILLAC AIMS TO RECLAIM ITS PLACE AS THE “STANDARD OF THE WORLD” WITH THE ALL-ELECTRIC CELESTIQ

Some trumpet fanfare is in order. Perhaps even a rousing rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner by Gaga. An enthusiastic round of applause, at least.

The reason for all this jubilation? Cadillac is making moves to once again become the “standard of the world,” this time with a hand-built, all-electric flagship that’ll start at $300,000.

The all-new Celestiq will be the most expensive, most technically advanced, most exclusive Cadillac ever. How exclusive? When it goes on sale toward the end of next year, it will go head-to-head with the likes of Rolls-Royce, Bentley, and Mercedes-Maybach. Fewer than 500 will be built annually.

Cadillac pulled the wraps off a prototype version of its new flagship at a swanky private event during August’s Monterey Car Week in California, to which we got a coveted invite.

General Motors CEO Mary Barra was there to watch the reveal. Lobster was for dinner.

While Cadillac had been teasing the car’s design since mid-summer, nothing prepared us

for the visual drama of gazing at it for the first time. It’s huge, almost as long as a long-wheelbase Escalade ESV. Up front, the styling is influenced by the automaker’s recently launched all-electric Lyriq crossover and dominated by a patterned grille flanked by vertically stacked LED lights. There’s also a clamshell-style hood and a usable “frunk” with luggage space.

Glass is a big feature of the new Celestiq, with a high-lifting, wraparound, all-glass tailgate and a panoramic glass roof made up of

four panels, one above each of the seats. Using SPD (suspended particle device) technology, passengers can lighten or darken their own space at the touch of a button.

The cabin showcases Cadillac’s tech innovations, with a dose of bespoke craftsmanship.

The fascia, for example, boasts a full-width, 55-inch LED display, while the polished-metal, two-spoke steering wheel could have come out of a 1950s Eldorado. There’s also a retro theme with the seats, which, on the prototype,

are trimmed in what looks like trombone-case red velour with red leather side panels. Caddyloving Elvis would have approved.

Things get even more exciting underneath the bodywork. The car will be built on GM’s flexible Ultium EV platform, similar to the one used in the Lyriq and the new electric Hummer. With high-output electric motors on both axles to give all-wheel drive and Ultium battery power possibly as high as 200 kWh, range should be around 300-plus miles, with zeroto-60-mph acceleration in under 3 seconds.

For Cadillac to command such a lofty price tag and have any hope of attracting the attention of customers who might have a RollsRoyce or Bentley on their shopping list, the whole buying experience is going to have to be above and beyond. Which is why Cadillac is spending $81 million to develop a boutique manufacturing facility within its mid-century modern Technical Center in Warren, Michigan, designed by famed Finnish architect Eero Saarinen. It’ll include a commissioning studio where owners can personalize their

Celestiq, picking from a multitude of exterior colors, wood veneers, and leathers.

Of course, the million-dollar question is whether super-luxury sedan buyers will fork over $300,000 and up for a Cadillac instead of an upcoming electric Rolls-Royce Spectre or Bentley EV. It’s not out of the question. Remember that back in 1957 Cadillac sold the hand-built Eldorado Brougham that bristled with groundbreaking technology and cost more than a Rolls.

I think that for many American buyers, there’s a deep-rooted love for Cadillac and a powerful desire for the brand to succeed. Count me among them. «

Going GOZZO

BUILT ON ITALY’S AMALFI COAST, FRATELLI APREA’S HANDCRAFTED CRUISERS ARE NOW AVAILABLE IN THE U.S.

Ah, bella Sorrento. Home of limoncello, gateway to Italy’s spectacular Amalfi Coast, and embarkation point for a quick ferry ride to the romantic island of Capri.

If you have been and are nautically inclined, chances are you’ve stood at the city’s walls and gazed down longingly at the fleet of brightly colored Sorrentino gozzo fishing boats bobbing gently in the harbor. Their design dates back to the nineteenth century, when they used oars and sails for power. Now their broad beams, stout wooden construction, trade mark rounded transoms, and putt-putt engines have become synonymous with aquatic life along the Mediterranean.

In Sorrento, most of the gozzos tied to the docks will likely have been built by the Aprea family at their Fratelli Aprea shipyard in Marina Grande. Founded in 1890 by Cataldo Aprea, the yard is still turning out traditional gozzos for local fisherfolk.

In the late ’90s, however, the Apreas answered the call from families wanting a boat with the same seakeeping gozzo qualities but with a few more creature comforts. Think: a small cabin for post pasta-e-vino napping. The 26foot, tiller-steered Fratelli Aprea 780 was born.

The builder has since expanded its offerings to include a number of handcrafted, fiberglass-hulled cruisers rang ing from a 25-foot center-console dayboat to a luxurious 50-footer. All are custom-built and each is assembled with a single-minded focus on quality and craftsmanship. And all are guaranteed to spin heads, drop jaws, and have onlookers burst into spontaneous applause at their very sight. That tall, beautifully flared bow, the ring of varnished planking around the hull, and that distinctive rounded stern with its oversize teak swim platform—these vessels all but definitively prove the notion that life’s too short to own an ugly boat.

Until now, Fratelli Apreas have only been available to Euro pean boaters. But after a toe-in-the water display at this year’s Palm Beach International Boat Show, the builder decided to bring its bespoke boats to the United States, operating out of a new HQ on Lake Charlevoix in Boyne City, Michigan.

Currently, the U.S. lineup kicks off with the truly gorgeous and family-friendly 25-foot Sorrento 7.50 center console. Featuring wraparound stern seating, a huge foredeck with a giant sunpad, and a compact cabin with a shower, head, and V-berth for overnighting, it’s a masterpiece of space and versatility. And in these days when so many boats look like floating Clorox bottles, the 7.50 is a poster child for la dolce

vita, with its acres of mirrorvarnished mahogany, spar kling stainless steel, and salty teak decks. Power comes from either single or twin 125hp Yanmar diesels—bigger, if you want—pushing the semidisplacement-hulled 7.50 to an 18-knot cruise speed or 22 flat out.

Need more space? Any one of Fratelli Aprea’s trio of 32-footers is perfect for big groups. Take your pick from the center-consoled 32 Open Cruise, the 32 Semi-Cabinatto with its wide foredeck sofa, or the 32 Semi-Cabinatto Hardtop with its protected-fromthe-elements enclosed steering. These all come with twin 320-hp Volvo D4 turbo-diesels on straight shafts that give a 26-knot top speed with 22-knot cruising.

The Aprea family’s latest offering in the U.S. is the Sor rento 36 Hardtop, which made its North American debut at the 2022 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. The big appeal here are the below-deck accommodations.

There’s a forward master with a walk-around queen bed, a guest cabin with twin stacked bunks, and a drop-down salon table with cushions for an occasional double. With the 36, you can take your pick of Volvo-Penta, Yanmar, or MAN diesel power, with typical twin 590-hp motors giving around 30 knots and easy 24-knot cruising.

The gozzo look won’t be for everyone, nor will the time commitment required to maintain all that varnished teak. But for lovers of classic Italian style, these Fratelli Apreas are unmatched. Plus, outside of Sorrento, there’s no better place to quaff a glass of frosty limoncello. «

WITH GREATNESS

FOR MORE THAN SIX DECADES, ARTIST DARIO CAMPANILE HAS ENTHRALLED ART AFICIONADOS WITH WORKS RANGING FROM STILL LIFE TO REALISM, SURREALISM, AND ABSTRACTIONISM

If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, then art certainly is subjective, too. However, the greats seem to have staying power. Such is the case for Dario Campanile, who was born in Rome, Italy, in 1948 and has been painting for 65 years. Now a part-time Old Naples resident with his wife, Patricia, Campanile spent his early childhood years painting with wa tercolors. In adolescence, he grew ill with nephritis, a serious kidney condition that confined him to bed rest at home for four months. To lift his spirits, his father bought him a set of oil paints. From his bed, Campanile painted his first still life portrait in just a few days. The quality of his work impressed his parents, who recognized then he was a natural. Campa nile felt it, too.

“I shocked my parents, and I recall telling them that I had done this before,” says Campanile. “It felt so familiar. It was so easy for me, for some reason, to paint with oil. And I have never stopped.”

Piece by piece, Campanile’s work is astonishing. But what’s perhaps most remarkable is the broad artistic styles he’s traversed, working in Realism, Surrealism, Impression

ance along the way, including from two revered artists: famed Surrealist Salvador Dalí and Giorgio de Chirico, a pioneer in the Metaphysical painting movement, considered a precursor to Surrealism. Campanile met Dalí serendipitously when he was in his 20s while vacationing in Cadaques, Spain. He randomly encountered Dalí’s accountant first, who insisted on showing Campanile’s port folio of work to the eccentric master. Dalí, who would later label Campanile the “Roman master,” invited him to a reception and to his home for a private discussion on art. Campanile made the most of this opportu nity, querying Dalí about a particular creative concern of his.

“In my exploration of Realism, I used photography as a guide,” ex plains Campanile, who would frequently capture subjects in a photo graph and use this as a point of reference.

“A lot of my fellow artists in this day thought that doing this was cheating—that an artist should paint from their mind only. I had a monkey on my shoulder about it. But when I met Dalí and I men tioned this to him, he just laughed. He said, ‘My God, I use photogra phy!’ From this, he gave me permission and explained that the artistic expression still goes through me. This allowed me to take a huge step technically.”

Giorgio de Chirico also imparted sound advice. With the help of a friend who was delivering a bed to de Chirico’s home, Campani le landed in front of the groundbreaking painter in 1967. Campanile wore a raincoat under which he hid two of his still lifes.

ism, and Abstractionism—and even pivoting from painting to successful experimentation with cast pa per and bronze sculpting, among other mediums.

“Dario’s works have not only stayed relevant, they have grown in power and energy, proving ultimately to have long-lasting and increasing value,” says Marl issa Gardner, founder/owner of Emillions Art in Na ples, where Campanile’s work is exhibited and sold.

“This is very rare for an artist to stay relevant, grow in power, and speak to all ages and cultures.”

MASTER CLASS

Campanile is self-taught. He spent hours observing the works of the masters, which were readily available and accessible in Italy’s Eternal City. “I tried to go to art school, but I hated it,” says Campanile. “I stud ied by visiting the churches and museums in Rome. I used to just stare for hours. That was my school.”

Though not formally trained, Campanile did receive some guid

“I opened my raincoat, and he laughed,” recalls Campanile. “He asked me to place the paintings out by the wall. And he was surprised to see how advanced I was as a beginner. He asked me several technical questions, including how I painted my dark backgrounds.”

“He taught me to do a base behind and to not just paint black on canvas, explaining that this would make the black appear deeper and more intense. I didn’t know that. Meeting de Chirico was amazing because, not unlike my experience with Dalí, it was confirmation of my abili ties. The icing on the cake was that he gave me a tour of his house.”

FAMOUS SUBJECTS

Campanile’s fortuitous encounters continued after he moved to London, when he met famous Hollywood casting director Lynn Stal master, who was visiting the city. Stalmaster purchased one of Campa nile’s works and encouraged him to visit Los Angeles. Eventually, he moved there and was invited for a solo exhibit by the Edgardo Acosta Gallery in Beverly Hills.

“The show wasn’t super successful because the clientele didn’t totally understand or appreciate Surrealism,” says Campanile. There

were several notable persons at the exhibit, however, including movie icon Jimmy Stewart. “He looked at my paintings and was lost; he didn’t know what to think about them. But he was my hero as a boy, and I couldn’t believe he was looking at my work.”

While Stewart might have been perplexed by Cam panile’s work, plenty of celebrities recognized the art ist’s genius, including actor Carl Weathers, who is most famous for his role as Apollo Creed in the first four Rocky movies.

“Dario is an artist,” notes Weathers, who considers the painter a good friend. “We met in 1977, and shortly thereafter, I began collecting his works and continue to do so to this day. Dario’s abilities as an artist continue to amaze me. From his hyperrealism to portraiture to abstract paintings, his work is unique and specifically Campanile.”

Campanile remained in Los Angeles for a total of 10 years, meeting a sundry cast, including a producer from Capitol Records who suggest ed he generate art for album covers. Among others, Campanile cre ated cover art for Lee Ritenour, Little River Band, Cheech and Chong, and Herbie Hancock. In addition to this, Campanile served as a back ground artist for the well-known animation studio Hanna-Barbera, working to create cartoons such as Yogi Bear and The Flintstones. In 1986, he was commissioned by Paramount Pictures to design and paint for the company’s seventy-fifth anniversary logo, which includ ed the film giant’s notable mountain emblem.

“Paramount could not use my painting in video,” explains Cam panile. “But they constructed a three-dimensional model of it and filmed that.”

Campanile’s contact with celebrated individuals did not stop when he moved away from Los Angeles. In 2005, while dividing his time between Northern California and Maui, Hawaii, he was among 85 art

ists to partake in a multimedia art exhibition titled The Missing Peace: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama. As a participant, Campanile traveled to India and was granted a private visit with the Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso. The event provided the inspiration for his symbolic painting Missing Peace Found, a portrait of the Dalai Lama holding a newspa per with a liberated dove flying upward, snapping its shackles and busting through the paper.

“Meeting the Dalai Lama was an amazing experience,” says Cam panile. “The exhibition toured for five years at prominent museums around the world, and at the end, all profits were donated to the Dalai Lama and his causes.”

IN THE ABSTRACT

Currently, Campanile and his wife spend about half their time in Naples and the other half in Maui. In addition to Emillions Art in Na ples, he has gallery representation at Lahaina Galleries in Maui and Newport Beach, California, as well as Sorokin Gallery in Greenwich,

Connecticut. His work has shifted almost exclusively to Abstract Expressionism, a mode he has found most liberating.

“[Abstract painting] is the most direct and pure expression from my soul,” says Campanile. “Realism is very planned, very technical, and often requires an academic approach. The challenge for abstract work is to surrender and be like an open ves sel. Then, the energy can flow through me and goes onto the canvas. This helps me to explore new visions coming from my soul, my unconsciousness.”

Gardner of Emillions Art values the complexity of Campanile’s abstract work, explaining that it’s a difficult genre to cap ture with the intensity, content, and con text that he encapsulates.

“I truly believe Dario’s well-refined skill in Realism empowers him to bring more to an abstract work than most,” Gardner says. “I am delighted every day to see all ages identifying with something they love in his artwork.”

For his part, Campanile enjoys hear ing from those who view and experience his abstract works. He explains the per sonal satisfaction derived from painting in this mode: “I paint Abstract Expres sionism because the reward is amazing,” says Campanile. “When I’m in the process of painting, I go to another level of con sciousness. It’s a mystical, amazing thing. A creative force guides me.” «

Author Scott Turow and his wife, Adriane, find sweet surprises in their part-time Naples life

’ve always been interested in the way people advance and retreat in your life,” says best-selling author Scott Turow. He is sitting at a round glass dining table in the Naples home he shares with his wife, Adriane. It’s an early morning in late sum mer and already steamy outside, but it’s cool and inviting in the Turows’ Floridacasual home. The Turows are in Florida for just a short visit before they head back to their Chicago-based residence. There’s some bustling in side as Adriane finishes packing to go north. Both are dressed casually in linen, cotton, and sandals, look ing very much at home in the Florida summer.

The discussion centers on Turow’s new novel, Suspect. It’s his fifteenth book; he has published 13 works of fiction and 2 nonfiction. His blockbuster first novel, Presumed Innocent, was published in 1987 and turned into a hit 1990 movie starring Har rison Ford and Greta Scacchi. All told, his books have sold more than 30 million copies and have been translated into more than 40 languages.

Turow readers will recognize some of the char acters in Suspect from previous novels. The private

investigator, Clarice “Pinky” Granum, is the granddaughter of Sandy Stern, the elegant and magnetic defense lawyer who first showed up in Presumed Innocent, a character who has refused to take a back seat for all these years. Stern is clearly an object of the author’s affection.

“Every book is going well,” Turow says, “when, in the course of the writing, there’s a character who—while planned—starts to run away with the book and says, ‘I need more attention; I need bigger scenes.’ Kind of like a diva,” Turow says with a laugh. “And Sandy Stern was definitely that character in Presumed Innocent.”

By virtue of the passage of time, Stern’s heyday has now passed and it’s his granddaughter’s turn. She first appeared in utero in Turow’s 1990 The Burden of Proof. Advancing and retreating.

While Turow is talking about his characters, he could just as easily be referring to his life in Naples. He and Adriane started coming around 2016 to get away from Chicago winters. “Coming to Naples has

taught me that I am a weather slut,” he quips. “And what I like is blue skies and 80 degrees.” With each passing year, the Turows find they dedicate more and more time to the Sunshine State. In the coming year, they plan to spend about seven months on the Paradise Coast.

Much more than the pleasing weather, the people they’ve met here have been the “surprise gift,” as Adriane, 58, puts it. “We have met just wonderful people—thoughtful, smart, fun, and engaging. And for me, at least at this point in life, it’s not often that I’ve had an opportunity to make genuine friends.”

“We’ve met people down here we genuinely love,” adds Scott, 73. “And at this stage, you have more time to meet and get to know people. You’re open to other people in a way that you weren’t earlier in your life.”

The favorite pastimes of both Turows when they’re in their southern home involve sports. Playing them, that is. “Three years ago, at the age of 70, I decided to take my first tennis lesson,” says Scott,

though he’d always played. While the lessons are helping his game, he doubts he’ll ever get to Adriane’s level. “She’s a much better tennis player than I will ever be,” he says. Both enjoy playing golf and pickleball as well. “I just love running around and playing sports,” says Adriane. “I’m way more enthusiastic than I am good.” Sports is generally how they met their beloved Florida friends and how they spend time with them.

Their low-key approach extends to dining, too. Their favorite spot? The beach. “We have a little table we take,” Scott says. “We may invite another couple and have drinks and appetizers or a full meal down there.”

Scott retired from practicing law in 2020. Despite his status as a mega-successful author, he has always maintained a law practice, often working pro bono. Adriane, also trained as an

attorney, retired as a banking executive around the time they started coming to Naples. However, Scott has no plans to retire from writing. When they’re here, he says, he gets up at sunrise, makes a pot of coffee, lets out the dogs, and catches up with newspapers online over breakfast. Then he disappears into his office to work for four or five hours.

After book 15, are there things he still wants to write? You bet. Scott relates, “I’ve always wanted to write what is often called a commonplace book. I loved Norman Mailer books in that vein when I was a college student. He wrote books like Cannibals

and Christians, where he would take his own pieces that had been written years before and introduce them with commentary. I’m in trigued by doing something like that.”

Turow’s early work, like Sandy Stern himself, refuses to give up the spotlight. Presumed Innocent is about to go into production as an eight-episode series for Apple TV+. “There’s a powerhouse team be hind it,” says Turow. “J.J. Abrams, David Kelley. They’ll start filming in [Los Angeles] in January.”

Was he involved in writing the screenplay? “I regard myself in these matters like a nineteenth-century child. I speak when spoken to,” he

says. “I’ve known David for 30 years, and I have higher regard for him than anybody else who writes in the world of TV. So if he calls me up and says, ‘What do you think about this scene?,’ I answer him. But if he doesn’t have any questions, then I don’t.” A story that came out in 1987 will need a lot of updating, Turow knows. “And one of the really bril liant things about what David did is that updating,” he says. “As I told him, when I got to the end of the pilot script, even I was shocked by it.” That was a good surprise—not unlike a later-in-life cadre of dear new friends, or a new killer backhand to unleash. For Scott and Adriane Turow, it’s another in a line of delightful plot twists. «

LOCAL PHILANTHROPIST SANDI MORAN PASSIONATELY SUPPORTS THEATER, WHETHER ON THE GREAT WHITE WAY OR THE PARADISE COAST

to Naples t Broad way

he arts scene in Naples has grown exponentially over the last several de cades, and while Sandi Moran is quick to give credit to others, her contributions are undeniable. The Tony Award–winning produc er and philanthropist, in tandem with husband Tom, has contrib uted endless hours and significant financial resources to elevate the arts to a level unlike any other com munity in Southwest Florida.

Moran is a fifth-generation Flo ridian who has roots in Naples that date to the 1960s. After graduat ing college in 1985, she returned

to the area for what she thought would be a brief stop. Famous last words. “If you are single, you come to Naples not expecting to stay. You don’t really come back until you’re married,” she says with a chuckle.

Love is what hooked her. Not just love of the area but of a young man she met while he was vol unteering for the Mental Health Association at the Taste of Col lier fundraiser. He was manning a margarita booth on Third Street South. When she ordered a drink from Tom Moran, she remembers, “We had an instant connection. We kept bumping into each other after that, and the rest is history.”

Over the years, the power couple has been a big part of Naples’ philanthropic scene. Their résumé is long, but some of the highlights in clude co-chairing The Naples Winter Wine Festival (2015 and 2016), serving as founding patrons of Opera Naples, and serving on the Gulfshore Playhouse’s board, to name a few.

In fact, the mainstage in the new Gulfshore Playhouse Baker Theatre and Education Cen ter, slated for completion in 2023, is named for the Morans, thanks to their generous $5 mil lion pledge to the new theater complex.

Moran always loved the arts, but her pas

sion for them blossomed as she got older. Growing up, she participated in school plays, but says at the time, there weren’t a lot of opportunities in the arts locally. It wasn’t until she had kids of her own that things in Southwest Florida began to change.

As fate would have it, or perhaps a serendipi tous seating chart, one night she found her self next to Broadway producer Hunter Ar nold at a dinner party. She remembers, “He regaled me with stories of Broadway, some of which were similar to the involvement we had here with nonprofits.”

Intrigued, she dipped her toe into the world’s most famous theater community, in vesting a small amount in a Broadway play. It opened and closed within four weeks. Despite losing her investment, she was so fascinated by the intricacies of creating a show, she went back for more.

I love the creative process. I love the excitement of live theater. We have an incredibly wonderful art form with American musicals.”

Before she knew it, Moran had embarked on a second career as a Broadway producer. Her shelves now display three coveted Tony Awards, for Moulin Rouge!, Hadestown, and Once on This Island

“I love the creative process. I love the ex citement of live theater,” she says. “We have an incredibly wonderful art form with Amer ican musicals.”

While Moran was spreading her wings in New York, the Naples arts culture con tinued to evolve. “Myra Daniels and the Naples Philharmonic really put us on the map as a cultural destination,” Moran says. “I’m not sure people realize how much she has added to the community.” Daniels, who founded what is now known as Artis—Na ples, died in June at age 96.

Moran also sings the praises of Kristen Coury, CEO and producing artistic director of Gulfshore Playhouse. “She is a powerhouse leader who had a vision to bring professional theater to our community,” says Moran.

She also gushes over Opera Naples, Na ples Performing Arts Center (hosting theater and dance for children), and The Naples Players. “I sit in the audience of The Naples Players and am amazed at how professional they are for a community theater,” Moran says. “I’m really just blown away by the tal ent we have in Naples.”

As much as Moran is in love with Broad way, she loves Naples even more. Her goal is to bring the two together by premiering one of her Big Apple–bound shows in Collier County. She explains, “That’s where a repu tation is built for the quality of theater in a town, and it makes an incredible financial im pact.” When a nonprofit theater participates in bringing a Broadway show for its first pro duction run, the group continues to receive revenue from the show when it moves on.

In her spare time, Moran is a competitive ballroom dancer, although her competitions have been put on hold because of a knee injury, compounded by back-to-back Broad way projects. As a Broadway producer, Moran works behind the scenes. However, dancing brings her center stage, literally. “It is not something that I think comes natural ly,” says Moran. “But I think that is one of the

things I love, because it pushes me outside my comfort zone.”

In the Works

Moran currently has four shows in the Broad way queue. The process begins by taking the pro ductions on the road for openings, called out-oftown tryouts—that’s where the kinks are ironed out and the reviews begin.

Joy, a new musical, is her newest endeavor. It’s the inspirational story about Joy Mangano, inventor of the Miracle Mop. Actress Jennifer Lawrence played Mangano in a 2015 feature film. In the works for five years, the show’s out-of-town debut is at the George Street Playhouse in New Jersey in December.

Along with Ken Davenport, Moran is lead pro ducer for The Griswolds’ Broadway Vacation. “It’s quite funny,” she says. “In this show, the famous Griswold family goes on a whole new adventure.” Out-of-town tryouts took place in September at Se attle’s 5th Avenue Theatre. The show is now ready

for a Broadway stage.

Harmony, another show she is lead producing, is also await ing a New York City stage. Bar ry Manilow is the show’s com poser. Moran has hopes it will secure a spot in 2023.

One of the biggest challeng es to getting a show on Broad way is waiting for and getting a theater. It can take years.

Moran does have a venue for A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Dia mond Musical. Opening night is scheduled for December 4 at Broadway’s Broadhurst The ater. Moran is a coproducer.

“Without Broadway, New York is a far less ex citing place. It is the heartbeat of the city,” Mo ran says. “You can say the same about Naples. Just look at how much the arts add to our lives here.”

The Morans have three biological adult children and have helped raise three more. One is a Chinese student who came to the States through an interna tional program. The other two were the children of a dear friend who passed away from lung cancer. A year later, Moran was also diagnosed with lung can cer. She remembers, “It was the hardest thing I ever had to do, sit them down and tell them.”

That was seven years ago. Cancer, as it does to many people, changed her perspective. While philanthropy has always been a part of her life, cancer made it clear. She says, “You have to live each day, not only to make a better life for your self, your family, and your friends, but honestly, the world.” That’s what she does through the arts and through every donation she and her hus band make to local charities. «

IF THERE’S ONE THING KEITH WALLACE LIKES TO DO, IT’S HELPING PEOPLE

When he was 5, Keith Wallace’s family moved to Naples from Balti more, Maryland. He graduated from Lely High School in 1992; his first job was in the mailroom of the Naples Daily News. While there, he saw an in ternal posting for a graphic designer. Thinking it would be a “cool job,” he applied, got the position, and stayed at the local newspaper—eventually working as a sales account manager—for an impressive 24 years.

In 2009, Wallace enrolled at Hodges University, obtaining his associ ate’s degree in criminal justice in 2012, as well as a bachelor’s degree in the same discipline in 2014. During his years in protection services—a part-time career he started in 1997—Wallace provided personal guard duty for local dignitaries, such as U.S. Senators Rick Scott and Marco Rubio. In addition to some private investigation work, he has worked with G4S, a security services provider now owned by Allied Uni versal, and was chief of security for the Collier County government for six years. Today, he serves as the area asset protec tion manager for Saks Off 5th locations in Tampa, Naples, Fort Myers, and Ellenton. One day while exercising and staying in shape for his job, Wallace found himself in a moment of self-reflection, thinking: “I work out all the time. I look okay. I’m active. I have a personality. Who am I doing this for? Why?” Without missing a beat or second guessing himself, Wallace found an agent in Naples and began booking model ing and acting gigs in his spare time. “Basi cally, I was bored,” he explains. His first job offered no compensation. Local opportuni

ties were scarce, and Wallace frequently found himself travel ing to Miami or Orlando for acting-based work.

Slowly, Wallace was able to begin building up his “entertain ment” résumé in his spare time, modeling in local television commercials and eventually playing a lead role in the inde pendent film Tacklebox, shot in Naples; he has acted in such movies as One Evening, Chill Out, and The Red Tide Massacre

He has also worked with national brands like Dunkin’, Best Buy, and Coca-Cola. His latest audition was as a doctor for a Walmart commercial. And yes, he got the job.

About his after-hours career Wallace says: “I never had the urge to go to L.A., but I did have the goal to see myself some where famous—like a movie or so.” His big break was a non speaking role in Avengers: Endgame, playing on the same “stage” as Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Redford. Released in April 2019, the film, with its all-star cast, set numerous box of fice records, including becoming the highest-grossing film of all time from July 2019 to March 2021.

His role, playing a S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Interven tion, Enforcement, and Logistics Division) agent came naturally to security officer Wallace. It also fulfilled his desire to appear on the big screen. Believing “nothing can top this,” Wal lace decided he had made it as far as he wanted to go. He began wondering what was next. In 2021 he launched Wallace Entertainment

(WE) with the intent to bring awareness to the talent in Naples, to pass on the knowledge he had gained while working in the industry, and to pro duce feature films locally. Wallace had established numerous connections during his dual careers, as well as credibility, and as he says, “this business re lies on referrals and recommendations.”

The WE company initials printed on promotional ball caps and T-shirts have become an unintention al slogan for his company: “It’s not me, but we,” he chuckles. To give all those in the business a platform to connect, Wallace created a private Facebook page for aspiring actors, producers, photographers, singers, and more. “It’s like an online classified section,” he explains. Wallace also manages the @collier_county_entertain ment handle on Instagram. In addition to his company website, Wallace has an IMDb page, which is touted as the world’s most authoritative source for movie, television, and celebrity information.

Although still employed full-time in the secu rity world, Wallace can feel himself getting pulled into the entertainment world more and more. His vision—for the next two years at least—includes “making Wallace Entertainment the number one resource for all things entertainment, to be part of four films, and to get Naples noticed as a great desti nation to make movies.”

The entertainment industry in Southwest Florida is in its infancy, but Wallace sees great potential for Naples, believing that if you live here and you

want to break into the business, there is ample opportunity to practice locally. “Naples is a small market, but it’s not necessarily small-market tal ent,” he adds.

With his protective good-guy nature, Wallace has successfully parlayed his security persona into the entertainment business. “There are so many scams in this business,” he explains. “Because of my desire to protect people from evil, I also take this attitude in the entertainment business.” He feels good about providing that layer of defense to Naples. «

Film in The Sunshine State

Did you know that Jacksonville, Florida, could easily have become the Hollywood of the world? Once con sidered an international winter film capital, the city played an important role in the early history of film. As the motion picture industry developed and “going to the pictures” grew in popularity, the big city on the Atlantic coast of Florida was an attractive destination for filming with its warm weather, natural settings, architectural diversity, and a location easily acces sible by rail from East Coast cities.

A silent film studio was first opened in Jacksonville in 1908; more studios followed, including Metro Pictures, which eventually became MGM, now a Hollywood giant. Florida became the location for many films from the early nineteenth century on, including Midnight Cowboy in 1969, and Jaws 2, the sequel to the 1975 Steven Spielberg film released by Uni versal Studios. More recently, popular movies filmed on location in Florida include the story of a rambunctious dog, Marley & Me; Transformers: Dark of the Moon, partly filmed at the Ken nedy Space Center; and the goofy comedy Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

Eventually, the spotlight switched from both New York and Florida to California, where the film industry still flourishes today. To ensure Florida remains a world-renowned produc tion center, The Florida Office of Film and Entertainment (filminflorida.com) in Tallahassee provides the state’s film and entertainment industry with support and services. The film commission reports that Florida is home to the third largest talent pool in the United States. With 825 miles of beach—much of it uninhabited, an array of cityscapes, and year-round sunshine, there are numerous advan tages to shooting a movie in Florida.

The Paradise Coast Film Commis sion (paradisecoast.com/film), a fullservice agency of the Collier County government, actively markets Naples as an option for location filming. Mag gie McCarty is the film liaison. As she says, “It is always exciting to share the many facets and beautiful locations our destination has to offer.”

ABOUT THE LIST

Naples Illustrated partnered with the firm Professional Research Services, which asked licensed Collier and Lee County dentists who they would recommend in the area for dental care. Dentists were allowed to name up to three colleagues in each specialty. Nominees were then evaluated on the basis of the survey results, the status of their licenses, and their standing with the Florida Board of Dentistry. Qualifying dentists who received the highest number of votes are reflected on the following list.

Dr. Alan Rembos earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery from Northwestern University Dental School, graduating as senior class president. He completed his Bachelor of Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign; he also holds dual certification in Botox and dermal fillers and has completed a fellowship in implant dentistry.

Practicing in Naples for more than 20 years, he has consistently received top dentist recognition. As a graduate of Northwestern University, he practices to the highest standards and within a patientfocused, personalized setting.

A computerized anesthetic delivery system called “The Wand” is used for all treatments in the office. Patients love this technology, which provides the most comfortable method of receiving a shot with

50 percent fewer injections necessary.

The office, which boasts a personable and friendly staff, places and restores implants on-site, so no need for running around from location to location. If you’ve ever considered improving your smile, look no further. From addressing a chipped tooth to reversing discoloration to straightening teeth, the office has the skills and credentials for great results. Just a quick look at the many reviews consistently receiving the highest ratings reveals the quality of care that you deserve and that our office provides.

Currently the office is accepting a limited number of new patients. If you’re looking for a top dentist with outstanding credentials and personalized attention to your dental needs, look no further.

DENTAL CARE

From a very early age, dentistry has been Dr. Paola Suglio’s passion. She grew up in a family of dentists, which gave her the chance to witness and learn about what her family did with so much passion and commitment. Her mission is to make every patient’s visit as stress free and comfortable as possible while providing the highest quality of care.

Suglio is a foreign-trained dentist and prosthodontist who has been practicing for more than 20 years. She received her dental degree in 2001 in her hometown of Maracaibo, Venezuela. In 2009, she achieved her degree in prosthodontics from Universidad Javeriana in Colombia. After she moved to the United States, Suglio completed her training at the University of Florida in 2015 to become a licensed dentist in the United States.

With her memberships in the American Dental Association and the Academy of General Dentistry, she strives for continued growth in education and excellence. She makes every effort to stay on top

of current developments in dentistry. To that end, she maintains the highest level of accreditation and takes advantage of ongoing education in implant, cosmetic, and general dentistry.

One of the main reasons Suglio’s patients return to Dental Care at Grande Oak and refer family and friends is the unique environment of patient care that has been created by her and her team. From the practice manager to the hygienist to the dental assistant and business assistant, an attitude of genuine care is shown to every patient. The staff’s goal is for every patient to feel like they are welcomed warmly, treated thoroughly, and cared for completely. This is accomplished by the expertise of Suglio and her team, as well as the state-of-the-art technology that the office provides.

In her free time, Suglio loves to spend time with her family. She also enjoys working out, travelling, boating, and cooking healthy food.

GERARDO

SANTIAGO, DDS

Specializing in pediatric dentistry, Gerardo Santiago, DDS, is passionate about serving Naples’ families and ensuring the next generation enjoys a lifetime of healthy smiles. This year marks Children’s Dentistry of Naples’ 27th anniversary with Santiago at the helm from the start.

Because he believes that happy patients are healthy patients, Santiago has created a warm, welcoming environment that puts both children and parents at ease. The kid-friendly office prioritizes safety as well, ensuring every member of the team is up to date on the latest technology. Innovative techniques include the utilization of non Bis-GMA and Bis-Phenol A (BPA) dental sealants and fillings for children, nitrous oxide (happy gas) services for apprehensive patients, and low-radiation digital radiographs.

Santiago received his certification from New York University College of Dentistry, Interfaith Medical Center, where he discovered an interest in stem-cell regenerative medicine. He is a member of the American Dental Association, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Florida Dental Association, West Coast Dental Association, and Collier County Dental Association.

Makaela Manner Kunstler, DMD, founded Harbor Dental in 2020, fulfilling her dream of private practice ownership. As an independent owner, Kunstler takes pride in offering the highest level of care to her patients by using the best materials and investing in the latest technology and education. This past year, she incorporated digital scanning and the ability to mill strong and beautiful crowns on-site, right in the office. For patients, this means better accuracy and no more goopy impressions!

Kunstler received her education from the University of Florida College of Dentistry in 2009. She consistently seeks the highest level of continuing education from the top dental educators in the world, including the prestigious Spear Institute in Scottsdale, Arizona. She particularly has enjoyed focusing on adult orthodontics, smile design, and cosmetic dentistry.

Kunstler’s vision is to change the way people feel about dentistry by creating a calm, friendly, and welcoming space where patients feel protected like family. The name Harbor was chosen because it signifies

safety, a protected area. Once a ship arrives within its limits, all who dwell there are held safely, despite the storms beyond. They feel cared for and watched after. The name Harbor Dental encapsulates this idea, with its secure, inviting, and gentle approach to dentistry, which is immediately sensed by patients as soon as they walk through the door. The reception area feels more like an upscale art gallery or spa. The treatment rooms are spacious and immaculately clean with scenic floor-to-ceiling windows. Kunstler and her expert team make every interaction as pleasant and comfortable as possible, from the smiles that welcome you to the dental chairs equipped with massaging backs, nitrous oxide (laughing gas), and TVs on the ceiling playing calming nature videos and music.

Harbor Dental is now accepting new patients and would love to welcome you to their dental family. Call 239-331-5660 or conveniently book directly online at harbordentalfl.com. Ask about their Harbor Smile Club, which is coming soon!

GEORGE MANTIKAS, DMD

Dr. Mantikas graduated from St. Johns University in New York, with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and later graduated with honors from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston.

He continues his pursuit of excellence and education as a member of the American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, American Academy of Implant Dentistry, International Congress of Oral Implantologists, and Florida and Connecticut Dental Associations. Dr. Mantikas served multiple terms as President of the Middlesex Dental Society, and was on staff at Middlesex Hospital for over twenty years, also serving as a mentor for the University of Connecticut Dental School.

After over 20 years of dentistry in Connecticut, Dr. Mantikas opened a practice in Naples. His goal is to provide progressive, comprehensive dentistry in a warm, caring environment. His practice is one of the few in Southwest Florida to offer oral DNA testing to determine susceptibility to a wide range of systemic diseases, based upon bacteria present in the mouth. Dr. Mantikas strives to build individual relationships with his patients, stressing optimal dental fitness.

“Catering to seasonal and full-time residents” is the motto that Dr. Shamus Loftus and his team adhere to at Pelican Bay Family Dental.

Pelican Bay Family Dental is not a corporate office and never has been; it is a private office, no DSO here. Loftus and his team bring an old-fashioned approach to care, believing in communication and building a partnership with patients. They also believe that every patient should be treated as a person and have their needs addressed in a personalized, compassionate, and fair manner. They know that each individual is unique, and therefore, services are tailored to patients’ specific needs and wants.

Loftus also understands that convenience is important, and consequently, the office provides all services necessary to achieve and maintain optimum dental health. From traditional services like preventative hygiene treatments and restorations to more specialized treatments—including cosmetic dentistry, Invisalign, root canals, extractions, and implants—Loftus and his team can meet most of your dental needs in the comfort of the office. Dental visits will be both

productive and enjoyable. Modern and comfortable, the Pelican Bay Family Dental office is always welcoming new patients, and Loftus and his team look forward to treating you like family.

Loftus has been in practice since 1999. He hails from Central New York, where he graduated cum laude from Le Moyne College and later from SUNY at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. He chose Tufts University School of Dental Medicine to complete his dental residency program. After operating a successful solo practice for more than 12 years in New York, the Florida sunshine and climate were too hard to resist. In 2014, he relocated to the Sunshine State and took over an established office in Naples.

Loftus believes in staying on top of the latest dental technology. He enthusiastically takes continuing education classes on new methods and procedures to ensure he brings the best and latest in dentistry to all patients he serves. He sincerely wants the best for them and their health.

Eat Your VEGGIES

When Tom Nütten and J.C. Perez, owner and chef, respectively, of Lamoraga, Naples, were ap proached about hosting a vegan event, they hesitated. Neither is veg an, and they had little experience. But, after discussing how to create vegan dishes while maintaining the quality and character of Lamoraga, “we accepted the challenge and never looked back,” Nütten says. Perez and Nütten will unveil their newly revamped prix fixe menu for the next Vegan Dinner November 25. It features four plant-packed courses: a pan-fried veggie pancake with scallion and mango salsa; marinated, roasted beets with crispy onion, shaved radish, and horse radish mayo; a main course of king oyster mushroom “scallops” over roasted tomato risotto and coconut pesto (pictured); and house-made Belgian chocolate mousse. A por tion of the evening’s proceeds will be donated to aplantbaseddiet.org, a Florida nonprofit that advocates for a “veganic whole plant lifestyle.” Overall, diners have been extremely positive, says Nütten, adding, “We realized that this event is not just for the vegan community. Lamoraga has become a restaurant where both vegan and meat eaters can enjoy a great meal in a beautiful set ting together,” he says. “Everyone is happy!” (lamoragarestaurant.com)

A Moveable Feast GATHER

Newly launched Campagna Catering by Chef Vincenzo offers the opportunity to have Vincenzo Betulia and his team personally cook for clients in their homes or other venues.

“We have been fortunate to receive un precedented demand for catering from our restaurants,” Betulia says, “and the new ven ture is a natural evolution of the Campagna Hospitality Group.”

Shane Rossbach, former executive sous chef of The French, has been appointed executive chef of Campagna Catering, while Betulia will personally oversee catered events. The menu will feature customer favorites from Betulia’s impressive portfolio of popular Naples eateries—Osteria Tulia, The French, Bar Tulia on Fifth Avenue South, and Bar Tulia Mercato—as well as new, specially created dishes for small and larger groups. One key advantage is the ability to have custom menus created by an acclaimed chef.

Over the years, customers clamored for Betulia to deliver his culinary delights to homes

How Sweet It Is

Faith, love, and dough proved a winning recipe for Naples native Maria Trupiano, owner of CAK’D, 100% Vegan Gluten-free Dough Bar & Treats in the Trinity Plaza at Ninth Street North and Third Avenue North. When the Bar ron Collier High School graduate moved near Pittsburgh, she wound up in an abusive relation ship. She knew she needed to escape for her own sake and that of her kids. Trupiano, whose prior business as a successful wedding photog rapher dwindled during the pandemic, turned to baking to regain confidence after the abuse and to support her sons. She started to bake for her church community and the response, she says, “was huge. Then people began asking me about gluten-free and vegan.” Trupiano spent

two years creating her own flour blend, which yielded gorgeous, fluffy, gluten-free cupcakes. She also created edible cake dough, which is akin to gelato.

“My faith and a lot of scripture got me through some of the scariest moments,” she says. One day, she felt a calling to move back to Naples

and gatherings. The more they asked, the more he felt the way to give his fans what they craved was to launch Campagna Catering. Kay Ousely, general manager of The French and a catering manager, says, “Vincenzo’s ‘groupies’ are fiercely loyal. When given the opportunity to choose from an already estab lished catering business or having a chance to enjoy our food, no matter the menu, they jump at the opportunity.” In the past, when requests came in last minute or were relatively large, Betulia and his team would pull staff, chefs, and food from their restaurants to make it hap pen. So, Ousley explains, “we thought, why not dedicate space, staff, and chefs to something that we’ve been doing so well? … This was just the obvious next step.” (campagnahospitality group.com) —K.S.

and open a storefront. She moved in with her parents and put all she had into her bakery, a gleaming, welcoming shop fragrant with the mouth-watering scent of baking.

Trupiano develops new flavors regularly. For fall, featured cupcakes include:

• Apple of My Eye—apple cider cake with cinnamon apple buttercream garnished with co conut toffee bits and salted caramel drizzle.

• Friendsgiving—Olive oil and thyme cake with cranberry compote filling topped with vanilla cranberry buttercream and garnished with a sprig of thyme.

• Give ’Em Pumpkin to Talk About—pump kin spice cake with spiced buttercream and garnished with chopped pecans and caramel drizzle.

• Legend of Sleepy Hollow—Spiced pumpkin cake with chocolate buttercream garnished with cinnamon cookie crumbs.

Trupiano plans to donate 10 percent of profits to local charities and deliver free cupcakes to families once a week. (getcakd.com) –K.S.

COMMUNITY VIBE

Among the area’s numerous farm-to-table establishments, The 239 Naples stands out. Opened in May at Mercato, the stylish eatery unites a wide circle of area farms, ranches, dair ies, hatcheries, bakeries, fisheries, breweries, and wineries in a network of local sources for top-quality, healthy foods. Suppliers to the res taurant include Dilly’s Fish Co., Naples (which brings in fresh, spear-caught fish from the back of Tim “Dilly” Dillingham’s pickup truck); Farmer Mike’s, Bonita Springs; Inyoni Organic Farm, Bonita Springs; Care2Grow, Naples; and Jimmy P’s Butcher Shop, Naples.

General Manager Greg Baldia says, “The goal of The 239 is to be upbeat and fun while serving high-level, healthy cuisine without pretension. We don’t just sell food and drink, we sell vibe.” Baldia has plenty of plans for

events to attract a com munity of diners with a youthful attitude. In the works are themed brunches, live comedy, and a Night Market fea turing local vendors.

There’s also philanthropic community sup port via Pass the Buck, sponsored by Tito’s Handmade Vodka. For every specialty charity cocktail ordered, The 239 will donate $1 to a local nonprofit, such as Special Equestrians.

The kitchen, helmed by Michelin-starred executive chef Mike Ellis, aims for zero waste and collects compost for farming partners. Sustainability will continue to be a major focus, as will the quest to be the go-to for fine cuisine and fun. (the239naples.com) –K.S.

SEASONAL SIPS

Talking Turkey—AND WINE

What’s best to pour with turkey and all the trimmings? We turned to an expert, Bruce Nichols, owner of The Wine Store in Naples for advice. “The short answer is almost any wine can work,” he says. “Given the dizzying number of dishes with the cornucopia of flavors on your Thanksgiving table, pairing the perfect wine means just about any wine can work. If there is an exception, I would say big tannic reds like young Cabernets can be a difficult pairing.” A hopeless fan of Burgundy, Nichols says this is the one day of the year he bows to tradition and serves only Ameri can wines. His recommendations follow. (thewinestorenaples.com)

The Opening Act: To start, serve a spar kling wine as guests arrive and gather. “This year I’ll be popping the cork on Napa Val ley’s Chandon Winery By the Bay, a Blanc de Blanc, to freshen the palate and start the conversation.”

The Whites: Sauvignon Blanc has become a crowd favorite that goes well with many dishes, including the range of Thanksgiving offerings. It can be a fickle grape, showing di verse styles depending on where it’s grown. Bottles from New Zealand are popular, but “I find them overly acidic and too grapefruit-y for many foods, particularly turkey.”

He suggests Gamble Family Vineyards

Sauvignon Blanc for its stone-fruit and creamy, subtle citrus flavors and a refreshing minerality that will stand up well to side dishes and white and dark meat. “Vegetarians will appreciate how masterfully this varietal complements the standard side dishes,” including green beans, brussels sprouts, and asparagus.

The seemingly mandatory white to grace Turkey Day is Chardonnay—and with good reason. “If you stay away from the over-oaked, butterball style that is thankfully beginning to fall out of favor with American wine drinkers,” says Nichols, “you’ll find most Chardonnays paired with turkey and the trimmings get along just fine.”

His choice: another gem from California’s Central Coast, Au Bon Climat, a blend from five vineyards in Santa Barbara, where cool ocean breezes allow for a long, even ripening season,

ideal for growing Chardonnay.

The Reds: Nichols’ quintessential Thanks giving red wine pairing is the juicy, fruity style of the Gamay grape. It is appreciated by those who prefer light, less tannic wines. “Sweet and savory, if there’s a better wine combo that goes with turkey and cranberry sauce, I haven’t found it,” though sadly, he says, Gamay, the main varietal popular in Beaujolais, does not have the following in the United States it does in Europe. “One of the top examples is Lieu Dit Gamay, produced in miniscule amounts in the Santa Ynez Valley in Santa Barbara; it fits the bill perfectly,” he says.

For the star of the holiday meal, he says Pinot Noir makes a magnificent “can’t-go-wrong” wine for food pairing. With red fruit flavors of raspberry and cherry, savory spice, herbs, and smoky overtones, Pinot Noir and roast turkey with the trimmings are brilliant together.

“My go-to Thanksgiving Pinot this year will be Three Sticks from Bill Price, of Kistler [Vine yards] fame, picked from different vineyards on California’s cool-climate Sonoma Coast,” says Nichols. “With its sweet and tart cherry and red-fruit compote flavors wrapped in an earthy shell of baking spices and herbal notes, you may find yourself alternating sips of wine and bites of gravy-drenched slices of turkey. Second helpings are in order!”

MULL IT OVER

WITH A FEW TWEAKS, SPICED WINE IS PERFECT FOR FESTIVE FLORIDIAN FETES

The fi rst documented consumption of mulled wine dates as far back as ancient Egypt, when spiced wine was used for medicinal purposes and considered to be an elixir of the afterlife. Typically made with red wine, this robust drink is now a favorite during the holiday season and into the colder months.

Considering our mild temperatures, I’ve brightened up this classic concoction by switching out the red wine for a lighter white wine. Notes of citrus, ginger, and vanilla also serve to warm and uplift. Finally, the crimson pomegranate seeds add a burst of familiar holiday fl avor to this delightful sipper.

Mulled Mystic

Ingredients (makes about 1 quart)

3 whole cloves

Zest from 1 small lemon

1 2-inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled 1/2 vanilla bean, halved lengthwise and seeds scraped out 1 750-ml bottle medium-bodied dry white wine 1/4 cup fresh pineapple juice

1/4 cup elderflower liqueur

Extra lemon twists and pomegranate seeds for garnish

Stick the cloves into the strips of lemon zest. In a mediumsize, nonreactive saucepan, combine the ginger, vanilla bean (both the pod and seeds), and about 2/3 of the lemon zest strips, including the clove-studded pieces, and cover partially. Simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally until fragrant and thickened slightly, about 5 minutes. Add the wine and pineapple juice, cover partially, and simmer until the wine is infused, at least an hour (do not allow to boil). Remove from heat and discard the ginger, vanilla bean, cloves, and lemon peel. Add the elderflower liqueur. Stir well and serve in a heat-tempered wineglass or glass mug, garnished with lemon twists and pomegranate seeds.

November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month and a great time to adopt an older pet in need of a home. While any pet may improve your health by helping decrease your blood pressure, loneliness, and anxiety, those 7 years or older are more likely to be an easygoing addition to your family than a young pet. Dave Feenan, chief development and marketing officer at Humane Society Naples, who recently adopted a 12-year-old dog, says, “He’s given my wife and me far more than we could ever give him.” Wonder if a senior pet is right for you? 2. They fit into all types of families. Whether you’re an older adult or have young children, a senior pet may be a great fit. For example, Feenan explains that a younger dog may react poorly to having their tail pulled. “An older dog, they’ve been there, done that,” he says. “They tend to react a lot better.”

3. They need less exercise. Taking them for a walk “might be just around the block instead of having to do a 10-mile hike,” Feenan says. He adds that this also makes them a better fit for smaller living spaces.

STROKES IN YOUNG PEOPLE

Strokes are most common among older adults, but younger people aren’t immune. Because strokes are less frequent among those under 50, though, younger people may not realize they’re having one, putting them at risk for additional health issues. “Younger people are less likely to recog nize the symptoms because typically their friends haven’t had strokes,” explains Dr. Lisa Aenlle, a board-certified neurologist at Neurosci ence and Spine Associates in Naples. Since younger people tend to have fewer medical issues, she notes, they may delay evaluation of their symptoms. These signs are the same in young and old adults: weakness or numbness on one side of the body, a change or loss of vision, and difficulty speaking or understanding others. It’s important to be aware of the symptoms, and if you think you may be having a stroke, seek care right away—regardless of your age. (nasamri.com) –E.K.

YOGA FOR KIDS

For one Naples yoga instructor, child’s pose isn’t just for adults. After practicing yoga with her kids since they were in the womb, Elaina Vasta founded Mini Buddhas Kids Yoga in 2018. Yoga may reduce stress and anxiety in kids just as it does in adults, according to research published in the Journal of Integrative Medicine. Vasta adds that yoga can improve both well-being and happiness. “The mindful aspect of it is really key to being a happy human,” she explains. “We are teaching our children to live in the moment, not the score of a past game or practicing for the next recital, but the here and now.” With a fun-first approach to her classes, Vasta notes, “I’m not sure they even realize they’re doing yoga; instead, they’re enjoying a class that makes them feel good about themselves.” (minibuddhaskidsyoga.com) —E.K.

FUELING WONDERFUL WORKOUTS

What should you eat before working out? As it turns out, the answer varies. “Every body is unique and different,” says Michelle Joy Kramer, a health coach in Naples. It also depends on the intensity and type of exercise, how much you need to eat for your body type, and other factors. She does, though, offer a few tips for everyone to consider: Remember to hydrate. Drink 8 ounces of water when you wake up, then wait about 30 minutes before starting your morning exercise. Adding electrolytes to the water is even better to promote hydration. Kramer recommends Elete Electrolytes from Mineral Resources International Inc.

Focus on proteins with some carbs and a small amount of healthy fats. Good pretraining foods include oatmeal, half a banana, a few dates, or toast with almond butter or avocado. Kramer recommends avoiding refined sugar and energy bars. And, regardless of what you eat, she suggests waiting one to two hours between eating and starting your workout. Listen to your body. If you ate a late dinner the night before, you may not be hungry before a morning sweat session. For a shorter exercise routine, you may not need to eat anything at all beforehand. “This is figuring out what works for you,” Kramer says. “Know what makes you feel good.” To energize your morning workout, try Kramer’s oatmeal recipe. Medical GASLIGHTING

may have heard of gaslighting in relationships, for instance when a manipulative partner leads one to question memories and perceptions. Unfortunately, the same dynamic can occur in the doctor’s office—sometimes with severe consequences for your health. “Medical gaslighting is when a health care provider dismisses your complaints or concerns,” explains Margot Escott, a clinical social worker and licensed therapist in Naples for more than 35 years. “They don’t seem to take you seriously or blame your symptoms on a vague cause, such as stress.” While it can happen to anyone, Escott says women, people of color, and the elderly experience it most frequently. We talked with Escott about recognizing and dealing with medical gaslighting to help make sure you’re sent home with a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

Why choose Dr. Swift for your care?

How do you know if you are experiencing medical gaslighting?

“People can recognize medical gaslighting when their symptoms are ignored or dismissed without cause,” Escott explains. For example, it can happen when a doctor attributes a medical issue causing memory loss to old age or skips diagnostic tests in favor of blaming the issue on the patient’s weight. “Being told problems are just ‘nerves’ is another sign,” Escott adds.

What are specific clues?

Be on the lookout for several signs of medical gaslighting, including when you’re made to be the blame for your health problems; your doctor doesn’t share test results; you’re told to wait in the lobby or examination room for hours; or you need to argue with your doctor just to be heard.

What should you do if you experience medical gaslighting?

The first step, Escott says, is to find a new physician. If this isn’t an option, she suggests taking a family member or friend to your appointments so they can observe the doctor’s behavior and support you if necessary. Remember, “If you are ill or in pain, you deserve to receive good medical care,” Escott says. (margotescott.com) —E.K.

Intro to INTUITIVE EATING

TIPS FOR LETTING GO OF DIETING RULES AND LISTENING TO YOUR BODY

ne of the first things I tell my health coach clients is that everyone is different; what works for one person doesn’t necessarily work for the next.

There seems to be a new diet trend every year, and most of us have tried at least one. Some enforce ridiculous rules, like banning beans (one of the healthiest foods on the planet) or certain vegetables and fruits, such as bananas or eggplant. This can lead us to not only judge specific foods as “good” or

“bad,” but also ourselves when we fall short. The more we demonize foods and forbid them, the more it leads to food obsessions and bingeing.

The good news is there is a new trend on the rise: intuitive eating, a radically different “un-diet” that encourages you to listen to your body, trust your hunger cues and cravings, and enjoy food again without the heaviness of rules. Focusing on how certain foods make you feel can be a guide for mindful eating; identifying those that don’t agree with you and those that fuel your body might be the secret to effective weight loss, positive body image, and a healthy relationship with food.

Letting go of rules might feel like a terrifying free fall, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. Most of us innately know which foods make us feel our best and when our body truly is hungry—we just need to start listening to ourselves, jump off the roller coaster of dieting, and embrace the joy of eating.

X

HOW TO START EATING INTUITIVELY

OPTIONS: Instead of giving yourself restrictions, give yourself options. When you feel hungry, take a moment to notice your cravings. What is your energy level like? Would fruit for breakfast feel good or does your body need something more substantial like protein-rich eggs?

LISTEN: Just because your friend has lost weight cutting out carbohydrates doesn’t mean that approach will work for you. Each of us has a different metabolism and different nutritional needs. Remember to take note of which foods make you feel good, energized, and fueled and which foods are hard for you to digest and make you feel sluggish. Let these become your individualized “rules.” If you notice beans are hard to digest or if common irritants like corn, soy, dairy, or gluten upset your stomach or cause joint pain, listen to your body’s red flags. Replace dairy, corn, soy, and wheat with alternatives, or consider soaked, sprouted beans that are easier to digest.

KINDNESS: Be kind to yourself. When you stop demonizing food, you give yourself permission to eat. Let’s say you’re craving M&Ms. By allowing yourself to have the M&Ms, you eliminate the feeling of being prisoner to your cravings. And guess what happens? You can have a few M&Ms and move on without eating the entire bag. What a sense of

X relief that provides—and a feeling of

YLANG-YLANG BOASTS CALMING PROPERTIES BEYOND ITS WONDERFUL AROMA

We’re surrounded by so much natural beauty that we can almost take it for granted. Recently, my husband, Marc, and I were taking a stroll when a ylangylang tree stopped us in our tracks with its mesmerizing scent. That moment alone was a gift. But, because of the tree’s long, cyclical blooming, ylang-ylang has been the lucky aroma for a number of our most cherished moments, whether giving our youngest daughter a roller-skating lesson or joining our son as he walks the dogs.

After a recent family trip to Portugal, the tropical perfume of the ylangylang’s sunny blossoms was the scent we came home to.

The plant world beckons to our senses, creating connections through its beauty, but also through a long legacy of healing. So many powerful medicines are derived from plants, including aspirin, which has its roots in willow, and the compounds used in chemotherapy, some of which come from the yew tree. As a holistic practitioner, I believe the aesthetic splendor of the plant kingdom is not separate from its healing strength. While working in my apothecary, I rely on plant extracts and essences to create transformative skin care formulas. And so many of nature’s most potent wonders can be found right here in Florida.

Native to tropical Asia and used in many traditional healing cultures, the ylang-ylang tree features graceful, draping branches that bloom with star-like flowers. While perfumers treasure ylang-ylang for its lightly fruity and sweet aroma (it’s a key ingredient in Chanel No. 5), it can also help to tone and balance the skin as well as alleviate stress. My clients share a range of emotions in the treatment room, and

ylang-ylang is the essence I recommend in times of grief or anxiety. Though science has yet to uncover precisely which bioactive molecules in the plant’s composition reduce anxiety, there is evidence that applying this essential oil to the skin helps to calm the nervous system, lowering blood pressure and one’s pulse rate.

As a wife, mother, daughter, and business owner, I have often turned to ylang-ylang when I’ve felt overwhelmed. I can recall one day in particular when I was dropping our son off at college, which is always emotional for me. As I was driving away, the phone rang with news of a family emergency, followed by a reminder of a pressing need at work—all while being stuck in morning traffic. Thankfully, I always have a little bottle of ylangylang essential oil close by. Even just one quick inhale brings restoration. «

The Role of the Federal Reserve

AMID AN UNCERTAIN ECONOMY, MONETARY POLICY TAKES CENTER STAGE

When the economy gets out of whack, all eyes turn to the Federal Reserve. Officially, the Fed’s mission is to control monetary policy. But what does that mean and how effective is it?

“The Federal Reserve’s primary role is to manage the supply of money in order to meet two key objectives: keep prices stable and promote maximum employment,” says Sean Snaith, director of the Institute for Economic Forecasting at the University of Central Florida.

Composed of three entities, the Federal Reserve System is this country’s central bank. It includes the board of governors, the 12 regional Federal Reserve banks, and the Federal Open Market Com mittee. Located around the country, the regional banks clear checks and act as the eyes and ears for the board. Presidents of each bank cycle through the Federal Open Market Committee as voting mem bers who decide whether or not to raise interest rates. The board of governors, chaired by Jerome Powell, is made up of seven members representing different sectors of the economy who are appointed by the president of the United States. Its role is to oversee the banks and implement monetary policy.

So just how does the Fed manage the supply and flow of money?

One of the most effective methods is to manipulate interest rates, says Snaith. When rates are lower, as they were for a decade leading up to 2022, it stimulates spending among consumers and business es because the cost of borrowing money is less, especially on bigticket items such as cars, homes, commercial buildings, and large appliances, but also on credit card purchases. In turn, there is an increased need for businesses to hire because the items in demand have to be built, produced, and shipped.

At the other end of the spectrum, higher rates make it more expen sive to borrow money, and that’s where we find ourselves in 2022. “In our current inflationary environment, the economy has over heated because the government shut it down for two months in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic,” says Snaith. Once the shutdown lifted, pent-up demand overwhelmed the supply chain and put a strain on companies that were scrambling to get workers back. “We opened the birdcage and everyone came out flying and looking to spend. The economy just exploded.”

In response to higher prices for nearly everything, the Fed began raising rates to try to bring inflation (the rate at which prices rise)

176 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

back to its target 2 percent annual average, rather than the 8 percent and more we reached during this past year. That helps slow spend ing, giving employment and the supply chain a chance to catch up to demand while prices stabilize or drop.

This strategy works well in this economic environment, says Snaith. “Monetary policy has a powerful effect over time because it impacts spending behavior,” he explains. “Especially when it comes to controlling inflation, the Fed is the tip of the spear, if not the entire spear.”

When the Fed’s actions are not sufficient, there are some addi tional tools to help stabilize the economy. During Congressional hearings this year, Federal Reserve Board Chair Powell has been asking the government to do more, but Snaith says there aren’t many options on the table.

“Congress can either cut government spending, raise taxes, or do both at the same time,” he notes. Higher taxes cut into consum ers’ discretionary spending money, while a reduction in government spending translates into money that won’t be pumped into the econ omy, resulting in less demand. Heading into mid-term elections, Snaith doesn’t see the government taking any action. “I think the Fed

will have to go it alone,” he says.

The final thought on the current economy is a word people don’t like to utter: recession. It’s always a possibility in an inflationary environment, Snaith says, but the silver lining is that it’s actually an other tool to help the Fed in its mission, by bringing spending back in line and the economy back into balance. “Recession may be the bitter pill we have to swallow.” «

Art of the Dig

A favorite local mascot of Marco Island is the Key Marco Cat, a 6-inch figure carved in native Florida buttonwood depicting a mysterious halfhuman, half-panther figure. For the first time since it was discovered more than 125 years ago, the Key Marco Cat is back in town and reunited with other rare pre-Columbian Native American artifacts at the Marco Island Historical Museum. The mys terious creature, thought to be a spiritual icon of the Calusa tribe, will hang around through 2026. The rare artifacts were discovered in 1896 by Smithsonian anthropologist Frank Hamilton Cush ing and are on loan from the University of Pennsyl vania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology through April 2024. The Key Marco artifacts were remarkably intact—including their original paint colors—presumably because they were buried in oxygen-free muck that preserved them for hundreds of years. While many disintegrated upon exposure to the air, artist Wells Sawyer, of the Pep per-Hearst expedition to Marco Island, captured them in his paintings and black and white photos. Sawyer’s original watercolor paintings, on loan from the Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville, will be on display at the Marco Island

Historical Museum through January 2023.

The Marco Island Historical Museum is part of the Collier County Museum system; its exhibitions include information on the Calusa Indians and the history of development on Marco Island. (collier museums.com) –Gaylene Salomons

WHAT LIES BENEATH

This spectacular shot, captured by Naples-based photographer Heather Donlan, features fluidity and grace of jellyfish in motion. “I’ve always been fascinated by jellyfish and the beauty of their rhythm and flow,” relates Donlan, who has worked as a professional photog rapher for more than 25 years. “Their movement reminds me of a slow dance between them and the water.” This image, shot in California in 2017 is entitled Dance of the Jellies #03 and is included in Donlan’s new line of artwork called the Love Your Art Collection, which was created with home and office decor in mind. While she primarily works in portraiture, over the past few years, Donlan’s repertoire has expanded to include nature and landscapes. (loveyourart.com; @heatherdonlan)
