Greetings. I hope this letter finds you ready and excited for another busy season of charity luncheons, events, and galas.
This year we had numerous nonprofit organizations reach out to be included in our annual resource and guide. I am thrilled to report that we received 108 event submissions from more than 86 charities. I encourage you to read through the listings, pick a few organizations near and dear to your heart, and plan to attend an event (or more) helping support the many worthwhile organizations that rely solely on donations and grants.
As the publisher of the Naples Charity Register, every year I am privileged to attend several of the events that our media company sponsors. At one particular celebration dinner, I was seated next to a student who was a recipient of a notfor-profit educational program. I was touched by his story and all that his family has been through. This particular student was driven, outgoing, and ambitious—he already has a few small side businesses. Above all, he loved his family. (His mother sat beside him beaming with pride.) I found myself sharing learned life lessons and advice. It was at that moment I decided I too wanted to help make a difference in someone’s life. This season, I have committed to mentor a student through the same organization.
I hope this twenty-fifth issue of the Naples Charity Register inspires you to support causes important to you and that continue to unite our community.

At least once a week I receive a press release in my inbox announcing a charitable gift made by a local organization, company, or private philanthropist. It goes without saying we live in an incredibly benevolent community.
There are many reasons why people give: because they can, because they believe it is the right thing to do, because they are asked, because it feels good, because it is a tax write-off, and because giving is contagious (apparently seeing others give makes an individual more likely to give). It is also believed giving fosters a stronger connection to one’s community.
In our twenty-fifth publication of the annual Naples Charity Register, we highlight some of the many ways our community is benefiting from such gifts.
Writer Patricia Janeway showcases nonprofits taking care of food insecurity for both people and their pets (page 25); she details four organizations within Collier County delivering mobile aid—everything from dental care to homework help (page 28).
As communities mature, they are able to shift their focus from meeting basic needs to meeting emotional needs. The arts industry, largely funded through donations, helps accomplish this. I share a small sampling of Collier County–based nonprofits devoted to supporting the arts (page 40)—many of whom had to regroup after the news this past July that the government vetoed $32 million in state funding originally approved for arts organizations.
Kelley Marcellus writes about Mac Stone, a conservation photographer who is using his artistic talents to visually document the Everglades in “Eyes Wide Open” (page 44). For this piece, Stone shared a selection of poignant photos that transport viewers to this incredible and invaluable ecosystem.
This year we list 108 fundraising events that raise money for an array of worthy causes. Take your pick of one or more and join the party—the donation party. A happier and healthier community will smile back.

PROVING NOT ALL SUPERHEROES WEAR CAPES, MANY PLAIN-CLOTHED CITIZENS COME TO THE RESCUE OF LOCAL FAMILIES—AND THEIR PETS—EXPERIENCING FOOD INSECURITY
By Patricia Janeway
Not all empty bowls belong to humans, as Vici Nadvit realizes. Believing that many people in the community are one job loss, health crisis, global pandemic, or hurricane away from experiencing food insecurity, the Naples resident decided that no one should have to choose between feeding them-
selves and feeding their pet. That idea was the genesis in 2017 of the Saving Grace Pet Food Bank—named for Nadvit’s rescue dog Grace—to assist pet owners who were facing fi nancial hardship.
The grassroots effort was launched out of Nadvit’s condo; however, her home soon became overrun with racks of dog and cat food and, as she jokes, “it smelled like PetSmart.” Today, the nonprofit operates out of a 200-square-
foot space near downtown Naples, where pet owners line up every Wednesday afternoon to get a week’s supply of food.
Relying on donations of money and pet food, Saving Grace provides approximately 10,000 pounds of free dog and cat food a week to families who are struggling to fill the bowls and bellies of their four-legged friends. “Our goal is to keep pets with their owners and out of shelters,” Nadvit says.
If there’s one thing Tony Mansolillo loves more than cooking, it’s cooking for friends at his Naples home. In early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic put a temporary hold on his dinner parties, but it did not diminish his passion for food and friends. He spent the hiatus perusing the internet for new recipes and exchanging them with fellow foodies on the Nextdoor app.

Mansolillo could be described as a boots-on-the-ground hunger warrior, venturing into dark woods, behind shopping plazas, and through trailer parks in search of people in need of a meal. “There’s nothing special about what I do,” he claims, with characteristic humility. “The responsibility belongs to all of us to help as many people as we can.”
When one of his Nextdoor acquaintances mentioned she was in a wheelchair, Mansolillo offered to cook dinner and deliver it to her doorstep. Word of his good deed spread among others on the app, and before long, the disabled U.S. Air Force veteran and retired executive found himself making meals for another dozen neighbors who were out of work and struggling
to put food on the table.
By mid-year, his newfound mission to feed as many people in need as possible grew to 150 meals, and the nonprofit Feed Thy Neighbor was created. Fast forward to the present where Mansolillo and an army of volunteers, operating out of a commercial kitchen in Bonita Springs, prepare and deliver more than 300 meals five days a week for people in Collier
Ceramic artist Donna Torrance and community volunteer Betsy Dawson love a good soup line. When Torrance, a now-retired Barron Collier High School art teacher, first heard about Empty Bowls 18 years ago, she was excited about using her students’ ceramic creations to raise money for hunger relief in the community. The idea was to invite people to purchase colorful handcrafted and painted bowls and fill them with soups donated by local restaurants. Torrance and a “board” of 10 students organized the grassroots effort and invited other students to help create the bowls; 200 kids responded, and the nonprofit Empty Bowls Naples was born. The inaugural event was held at the high school in 2007 with 500

bowls and 10 soups.
Today, the charitable organization taps local potters, artists, educators, students, and volunteers to create bowls for the event. The annual fundraiser is held in January at Cambier Park, where 5,000 attendees sample soups from 50 local restaurants and country clubs. The 2024 event raised a record $200,000.
“Our primary mission is to fight hunger, and we do that, but my favorite thing about this event is that it started with young people; it taught them a valuable lesson early on about giving back,” says Torrance.
Dawson, who took the reins as Empty Bowls Naples event chair more than a dozen years ago, adds that the fundraiser also accomplishes the organization’s secondary mission: to raise awareness of food insecurity. “People take their bowls home after the event and display them as a reminder to think about those who go hungry,” she explains.
When it comes to humble origins, it’s hard to imagine that Harry Chapin Food Bank (HCFB) also began as a grassroots enterprise. Starting 40 years ago as the Lee County Food Cooperative operating out of a farmers market, it has since become the largest hunger-relief nonprofit in Southwest Florida, feeding more than a quarter million people a month in Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry, and Lee counties.
Named in honor of singer-songwriter and hunger activist Harry Chapin, the food bank
depends on 170 partner agencies to help lead the charge against food insecurity. On average, the partner organizations—including Meals of Hope, Grace Place for Children and Families, Pathways Early Education Center of Immokalee, St. Matthew’s House, Marco Island Food Pantry (Our Daily Bread Food Pantry), McGregor Baptist Church, and The Salvation Army—receive 70 percent of their food inventory from Harry Chapin Food Bank.
HCFB President and CEO Richard LeBer appreciates the efforts of nonprofits such as Feed Thy Neighbor, Empty Bowls Naples, and Saving Grace Pet Food Bank. “As our community continues to grow, so too does the need,” he says. “We remain committed to ending hunger in Southwest Florida and are grateful for grassroots organizations who share our vision.”
On any given day, the roadways of Collier County are dotted with trucks and SUVs distributing groceries and nutritious meals to underserved neighborhoods. Observant commuters may also notice colorful logoed buses—and the occasional horse trailer—delivering other essential aid to those who are homebound or disabled, have limited financial means, or lack access to transportation.
One such resource is Healthcare Network’s Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, providing dental and health care services to children from low-income households. The pediatric clinic travels to schools, community centers, and neighborhoods, offering dental exami-

nations, sealants, and fluoride treatments, as well as school physicals and screenings for the Head Start preschool program.
According to Gabrielle O’Boyle, director of public relations and marketing at Healthcare Network, families served by the mobile unit often lack insurance, reliable transportation, or time to travel to appointments. “Without it, many children in our community would likely not have access to dental care and health exams,” she says.
Quality health care is important not only for humans but for animals as well; however, some families cannot afford proper care for their pets and feel compelled to surrender them to shelters. Humane Society Naples
(HSN) comes to the rescue with the Patty & Jay Baker Mobile Veterinary Clinic, offering free or reduced-cost wellness exams, canine and feline vaccinations, nail trims, ear cleaning, and spay or neuter services.
“For many people in our community, especially seniors who live alone, their pet is all they have, so our goal is to keep these companion animals healthy and at home,” says Meredith McLean, chief of community services at HSN.
Often, local migrant workers struggle to help their children with homework because the assignments are in another language. To break this barrier, Collier County Public Schools (CCPS) sends the Learning Express to serve student populations from non-English-speaking homes in parts of Immokalee and Naples. The classroom-on-wheels provides English lessons, literacy classes, a lending library, tutoring assistance, and help with homework.
“We recognize how challenging the migrant lifestyle can be and want these parents to know we are here to help their children succeed,” explains Diana Holden, CCPS director of federal, state, and competitive grants.
There’s nothing as good for the inside of a man as the outside of a horse, so the saying goes. To demonstrate that maxim, the Naples Therapeutic Riding Center hits the trail with its Mini Horse Therapy Team to provide equine-assisted therapeutic services to children and adults with social and mental health challenges. Miniature horses Itty Bitty and Raisin, along with their human handlers, visit schools, group homes, and assisted living and memory care facilities to provide comfort, social interaction, and cognitive and sensory stimulation.

PROACTIVE FOUNDATIONS ARE HELPING THEIR COMMUNITIES BUILD RESILIENCY TO WITHSTAND INCREASING NATURAL DISASTERS CAUSED BY CLIMATE CHANGE | By Cathy Chestnut
In the wake of natural disasters, community foundations have become first responders—providing emergency relief funding to help residents meet basic needs and working with nonprofits to develop strategies for both short-term and long-term recovery.
For years, the Collier Community Foundation (CCF) and the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin (CFPBM) Counties have activated disaster relief funds for hurricanes and economic disruptions like the COVID-19 pandemic. These funds can be
quickly seeded by immediate, one-time donations from community foundation trustees, new and established donors, or businesses. Donors with established donor-advised funds can expedite donations during a crisis.
Unrestricted funds are also invaluable. Naples resident G. Jeffrey Provol donated to Collier Comes Together’s Hurricane Ian Relief Fund in 2022—his only financial transaction with the CCF— and later decided to leave CCF an unrestricted estate gift of approximately $17 million. The foundation received the gift
after he died in September 2023. “This is how you build your communities—you ensure the community you care about is taken care of in the future,” says Eileen Connolly-Keesler, president and CEO of CCF.
So-called “billion-dollar weather disasters” doubled between 2010 and 2020, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information, a division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. In response, both CCF and CFPBM are taking a longer view—and a proactive role—in making communities more resilient against droughts, wildfires, and storms, which are predicted to intensify in frequency and strength due to climate change.
CCF has granted millions to elevate homes in low-lying coastal communities, orchestrated the planting of 3,500 native trees, and funded the Naples Botanical Garden’s initiative to propagate salt-tolerant plants to establish beach dune systems that break wave action. In 2023, CFPBM awarded $60,000 to Community Greening, which is focused on increasing South Florida’s tree canopy, and $21,405 to The Nature Conservancy’s microinternship program that engages underserved youth in conservation.
“Disaster recovery and philanthropy are evolving,” says Danita DeHaney, president and CEO of CFPBM. “We will continue to build capacity and systematic resilience to future severe weather and natural disasters. [Our] relationships with the nonprofits we serve—many of which are the boots on the ground during disasters—are critical to ensuring our ability to support the local community in times of need.”
The Center for Disaster Philanthropy recommends that donors “recognize there are places private philanthropy can help that government agencies might not.” It notes that community foundations are often nimbler and more innovative than bureaucracies: “With the increase in extreme weather events, governments cannot fully fund recovery. Therefore, private funders have opportunities to develop innovative solutions to help with recovery efforts and to prevent or mitigate future disasters that the government cannot execute.”

LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS SUPPORT THE PURSUIT OF CREATIVITY AND IMAGINATION TO HELP MEET INTANGIBLE HUMAN NEEDS FOR LOVE, RESPECT, AND A SENSE OF PURPOSE IN LIFE
By Gaylene Salomons
Art is a form of expression with multiple functions. Art inspires. Art reflects the values and beliefs of society. Art preserves culture. Art offers relief from the stresses and pains of life. Art bestows beauty.
By simply adding an “s,” this noun does even more, including referencing various branches of human creativity such as painting, sculpture, music, theater, literature, and dance. Arts and Economic Prosperity 6, a recent economic and social impact study of the nation’s nonprofit arts and culture industry, revealed that 86 percent of
Americans agree that the arts are important to their community’s quality of life and livability.
Seventy-two percent of the population believe the arts provide shared experiences with people of different ethnicities, ages, beliefs, and identities, suggesting that when humans interact with the arts, they gain an understanding of how others see the world.
The study also revealed the arts industry added an estimated $73.3 billion to the nation’s economy in 2022 through direct and indirect job and business revenues. As a result, cities are
revitalized, and communities become happier and healthier.
As funding for the arts fluctuates from year to year and as programming is slashed in public schools, state and community leaders are challenged to fund the arts. Many institutions are forced to rely solely on private donations in their efforts to increase access.
Within Collier County, there are many nonprofit organizations—both large and small, established and new—devoted to supporting the arts. Read on to learn more about a few of these.
Laura Simmelink, vice president of grantmaking at Collier Community Foundation (CCF), a public charity that pools donations to fund local nonprofits, believes the arts are very important. Last year, CCF earmarked $1,495,229 for programming related to arts, culture, and humanities. This amount reflects only 2.41 percent of the total amount the foundation granted, but Simmelink explains the relatively low number: “Collier County is a young community, and while we have not yet received substantial unrestricted funds for the arts, we expect to receive more as the foundation grows. Our funds are disbursed at the discretion of the fundholder. Human services, education, health care, and basic needs are more prevalent in our community at present.” She also notes that arts donors tend to find their ways independently to organizations—often one that reflects their personal interests.
Simmelink identifies three arts and culture grants that were made throughout the 2023-24 calendar year on behalf of CCF. The Naples Concert Band has been providing free concerts in Cambier Park for more than 50 years. With volunteer musicians playing over 80 pieces of music at eight concerts every season, there was a need to refresh the music repertoire. The foundation donated $2,000 to make this happen.
The Music Foundation of Greater Naples
provides private lessons to students based on merit and need, when music is considered a luxury beyond their reach. United Arts Collier granted the foundation $15,000 so that six additional students could participate in the private lesson program, with 100 percent of the funds paid directly to the teachers.
The Children’s Advocacy Center of Collier County introduced a Therapeutic Expressions Through Art program, designed for children affected by trauma and created to facilitate healing and expression through the medium of art. CCF granted $9,500 to extend the reach of the program; a portion of the
grant will be utilized to employ an experienced art instructor, subsidize the involvement of licensed therapists, and help provide essential art materials. “While the Children’s Advocacy Center is not an arts organization per se,” says Simmelink, “they are using expressive arts to heal the children they serve who are traumatized by abuse. We are hoping for wonderful outcomes.”
For the upcoming year, Simmelink remarks there are many deserving arts and culture requests. As of press time, decisions were still being made regarding disbursement of funds for 2024-25. (colliercf.org)
For more than 40 years, United Arts Collier (UAC) has been supporting all arts in Collier County with the vision to become the most recognized source for arts services and cultural information within the community. Executive Director Elysia Dawn is often out and about in the community—networking and developing mutually beneficial collaborations and partnerships among people, organizations, and businesses from all arts disciplines to realize this goal.
Rachel Lord, education and grants manager at UAC, explains the local organization is especially focused on fostering happy and healthy communities. She strongly believes the arts and being creative are important to everyone’s mental health and shares some of the recent initiatives made possible through grant money that included $75,000 from the Naples Children & Education Foundation (NCEF) and $30,000 from CCF to expand arts education programing for the youth of Collier County.
CreativityRx is a UAC initiative designed to leverage art therapy programming to
optimize student well-being and academic achievement. “Through this project, we plan to promote mental health by teaching students effective techniques that mitigate what’s been referred to as a mental health epidemic among the children of Collier County, cutting across age, race, ethnicity, and family circumstance,” explains Lord.
Collier County there are numerous nonprofit organizations dedicated to supporting the arts, helping communities become happier and healthier places.
United Arts Collier was awarded $25,000 for this project by Suncoast Credit Union, who aligned with the mission of advancing education in youth and focusing on promoting health and well-being. With additional funding through NCEF, Lord explains the program has a budget of $50,000 to reach over 500 participants of all ages. “We worked with our collaborating community partners on mapping out a program launch started in July
2024 that will run through June 2025,” she says. Pioneer community partners include Valerie’s House, Youth Haven, and The Shelter for Abused Women & Children. “We will seek expansion with additional community partner sites as the program rolls out,” adds Lord. (unitedartscollier.org)
UAC’s programming and funding extends beyond the youth of Collier County. Lord shares how UAC is finding innovative ways to collaborate with organizations as needs materialize. For example, she shares: “We have
a long history and relationship with The Naples Players (TNP); as we continue to learn that so many veterans struggle with mental illness, UAC partnered with TNP, Home Base, and Women Veteran Warriors. We hosted a night of comedy and coffee to help female veterans verbalize their emotions and let go of what they are holding on to.” Lord is hopeful such partnerships and programs will continue. (naplesplayers.org)
Another program UAC supports is art therapy at the Baker Senior Center Naples. A licensed art therapist offers small group sessions to help participants work on cognitive health and communication skills. (bakerseniorcenter.org)
Earlier this year, UAC partnered with STARability Foundation to offer a creative writing workshop for its participants. The weekly class, taught by Naples-based poet and dramatic writer Kathryn Ekblad, offers exploration of varying forms of self-expression through writing. Madison Nehls, chief program officer at STARability Foundation, says, “The sessions have been invaluable and productive … we are excited to see this partnership blossom.” (STARability.org)
Even organizations that are not artsbased are finding ways to incorporate the
arts into their programming. Take for example Grace Place for Children and Families, a nonprofit family literacy center. The center hosted an inaugural young authors festival earlier this spring, providing students in grades three to five a platform to explore their imaginations, hone their writing skills, and share their unique voices. More than 220 students participated, and Grace Place is planning to host the festival again in 2025. (graceplacenaples.org)
As Collier County continues to mature as a community and as basic needs are consistently met, the arts will surely flourish. As long as humans have the ability to create, art, in its various forms, will add dimension and depth to life—weaving humans from all walks of life and ethnicities together with ever-stronger bonds. Communities won’t just survive; they will thrive.
Amy Moglia Heuerman (pictured above), founder of Amy Art galleries in Bay Harbor, Michigan, and Naples, is recognized for the versatility of expression in her paintings. She shared a selection of her creations she refers to as “the girls” to illustrate how art provides humans with a creative way to express themselves and connect with others.
Her paintings of whimsical female figures in playful poses emerged out of COVID. “I was seeking the protection and safety of my inner 5-year-old—one who felt innocent, joyful, and taken care of. I wanted to capture those feelings in a painting,” she explains.
Even though Moglia Heuerman purposely leaves the girls faceless—to emphasize the emotional expression of their bodies—the abstracts resonated with viewers and became especially popular.
There is a palpable positive energy in every Moglia Heuerman painting. Working through color, shape, and texture, she says, “I tap into emotional energy in my paintings; it inspires an emotional response in viewers because the heart sees more than the eyes.” (amyart.net)
PHOTOGRAPHER MAC STONE PROVIDES AN EXCLUSIVE PEEK INTO FOREVERGLADES , HIS LIMITED-EDITION BOOK PUBLISHED IN SUPPORT OF A $75 MILLION ENDOWMENT CAMPAIGN TO RESTORE AND PROTECT ONE OF FLORIDA’S MOST THREATENED NATURAL RESOURCES
BY KELLEY MARCELLUS

Humidity hangs above still, dark water, where razoredged grass sways beneath a relentless sun and ancient cypress with knobby knees reach toward a star-filled night. An insect’s buzz precedes its bite and the watery landscape hides creatures that slither, swim, flutter, and—most worrisome of all—chomp.
This mysterious scene feels far removed from the developed regions of Collier County, with its sandy beaches, luxurious homes, and inviting shops, restaurants, and
other spots for vacationers. And yet, the solid ground of these contemporary places is lapped by an ancient swamp that has been forced to retreat for more than a hundred years.
It wasn’t malicious intent that diminished the footprint of Florida’s wetlands, says Mac Stone, a natural history photojournalist who counts publications such as National Geographic among his credits. Born in Gainesville and currently a South Carolina resident, Stone first discovered the Everglades on a family paddling trip as a teenager. He re-
turned 10 years later, working as a field biologist for the National Audubon Society.
Stone travels the United States and the globe covering conservation issues, particularly those regarding wetlands and swamps. He’s been covering the Everglades for more than 10 years, creating images of unexpected importance. “Conventional wisdom was that wetlands were bad, or at least useless,” he says. “Now we are trying to undo that.”
By “we” Stone means the scientists, educators, and advocates who are striving to restore some of the natural flow of these living and
life-giving waters, a charge for the last 30 years of The Everglades Foundation. This nonprofit organization is planning to complete its $75 million endowment campaign, ForEverglades, by the end of 2024; it has already raised $60 million. The goal of the campaign is to ensure the future financial stability of the foundation, which is currently involved in 68 restoration projects, including the building of the Everglades Agricultural Area (EEA) Reservoir south of Lake Okeechobee. Upon completion, the EEA Reservoir and its stormwater treatment area will be larger than the island of Manhat-
tan at a combined 17,000 acres. In tandem with other restoration projects, the EEA Reservoir and the stormwater treatment area will reduce Lake Okeechobee’s polluted discharges into east and west coast estuaries by 55 percent and send 120 billion gallons of clean freshwater south every year.
For his part, Stone has provided 130 images to be published in a limited-edition book, titled ForEverglades, that will be presented to top benefactors of the campaign. Working to produce the book with Kathy Moran and David Griffin, past photography and design experts
with National Geographic and other publications, Stone says his goal was to “take people to places they’ve never been.”
That sentiment is key to successful conservation efforts, notes Marshall Field V, chairman of the endowment campaign and immediate past chairman of The Everglades Foundation’s board of directors. “Picturing the earth without certain places in it is grim,” he says. “If [our unique places] go away, the planet may go away with it.”
Stone agreed to share select images from
his book with readers of Naples Charity Register as an introduction of sorts to a part of their home they likely haven’t met yet— or may never meet.
“You can come to love a place or an ecosystem or wildlife in many different ways,” Stone says. “I think the key is to rally everybody to say, “Look at this system. This is home.’”
In fact, the Everglades and surrounding areas play an important role in South Florida. Offering space for recreation, such as fishing, hiking, biking, snorkeling, and boating, the Ev-
erglades is also the source of drinking water for more than 8 million Floridians. It is home to flora and fauna found nowhere else on the planet.
“We think of ourselves as being connected to an ecosystem rather than part of it,” Stone says. He goes on to explain that conservation isn’t about stopping development but rather working with it to protect the elements that in turn make the area a desirable and sustainable place to live, as well as an economic boon to a state that heavily relies on and promotes tourism tied to its natural resources.
“
YOU CAN COME TO LOVE A PLACE OR AN ECOSYSTEM OR WILDLIFE IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS. I THINK THE KEY IS TO RALLY EVERYBODY TO SAY, ‘LOOK AT THIS SYSTEM. THIS IS HOME.’” —Mac Stone
Stone says his photographic endeavors have contributed to the scientific understanding of this area; as an example, he cites several summer months spent trying to photograph a giant sphinx moth, believed to be the sole pollinator of the endangered ghost orchid. Stone perched his camera 50 feet up a cypress tree to capture the precise moment of pollination. What did he find?
The moth appeared to be “robbing the nectar instead of providing any benefit to the flower,” Stone notes, clarifying that this hypothesis is still in need of more rigorous testing and evidence.
“This information was new to science, and, to me, the perfect embodiment of how the camera has become the vehicle [of discovery].”
His process, in most cases, is anything but a quick snapshot. In fact, Stone often invests weeks or more orchestrating the tools to create an image and then sitting in wait for the right opportunity. Sometimes that means standing waist- or neck-deep in swamp waters, operating a drone or angling a flashlight to illuminate a cypress tree against a night sky—only to be photobombed by a SpaceX rocket, in what seems to be the perfect juxtaposition of Mother Nature and human nature.
“All of a sudden on the horizon, this fireball is erupting, and it looks like a meteor,” Stone recalls. “My assistant was so freaked out—he thought the world was ending. But I’m just shooting through the entire thing asking myself, ‘God, what is this?’”
“Mac uses his photographs to connect people,” says Jodi Mailander Farrell, vice president of development for The Everglades Foundation. “It’s hard to appreciate the Everglades if you’ve never been there, and you don’t support what you don’t know. His photos help us create the connection.”
As for Stone, he says he wants people to look at his work and ask questions: What does this look like? What does this feel like?
“All people need is a handshake or an introduction to the Everglades,” he says. “It gives them permission to fall in love with it too.” «

Better Together empowers our neighbors through loving and meaningful connections, work opportunities, mentoring, and short-term care for children. Together, we all flourish.
More than 21,000 children were in foster care in 2023. The system is overwhelmed—but we can prevent the need for foster care. 85% of foster care cases involve preventable circumstances like neglect, not sexual or physical abuse.
Since 2015, Better Together has helped over 10,000 children in Florida—keeping 98% of children served through hosting and mentoring out of foster care. Through our workforce ministry, we have connected 45,000 job seekers with work opportunities across 24 states.
Our success depends on the generosity of supporters like you. Join us in our mission to help families and communities thrive.

Gabi Boyd is fortunate to have her paternal and maternal grandmothers present in her life. However, as they are both battling Alzheimer’s disease—one for more than 13 years—she finds meaningful communication with them a challenge.
A gifted artist, Boyd enjoys sharing her creations whenever visiting with them. Even as they were declining mentally, “I could count on my art to bring them joy,” she recounts. Boyd noticed their eyes would light up and realized, “a connection was made.”
She decided she wanted to share her art with more than family.
Three years ago, when a sophomore at Naples High School, Boyd started a club, Drawing for Dementia (she also registered it as a 501(c)(3) foundation). Likeminded students would meet and create works of art. After framing, they would gift them to local memory care residents. Boyd received funding from the Alzheimer’s Support Network—a nonprofit founded in Collier County in 1982.
The mission of the club expanded when Boyd sought more interaction with the residents.
Now, after school and on weekends, students (Boyd reports there are about 25 active club
members) visit one of three participating memory care facilities in the area to spend time drawing and chatting with the residents.
On a Tuesday afternoon in late May, in a light-filled common area at the Villa at Terracina Grand, a memory care facility in East Naples, students scatter themselves among four-top tables, sharing crayons and coloring pages with the residents who join them. There is a low buzz of conversation. “They talk about themselves, mentioning how many children they have, or other details,” says Boyd. Sometimes no words are spoken. And just as there is no messing up in art, Boyd explains, “we go along with what they say, we don’t confront or challenge their statements.”
About the club visits, Julie Badour, activities director at the Villa at Terracina Grand says, “It’s all positive. It’s brought so much happiness and compassion.”
A freshman at the University of Florida this fall, Boyd found an ambassador to take her place at the helm of the Naples High club. She is hoping other area schools follow suit and thinks she might one day take her nonprofit national. For now, she is happy knowing that she brought joy to someone’s life—even if only for a fleeting moment.
