Artist Emily James delights in capturing the beauty in the Florida environment. “Our unique ecosystems, colors, and wildlife are a constant source of inspiration to me,” she says. James realizes many of her Florida scenes with an abstract twist. “My love for beauty in colors, design, and especially nature continues to inspire me as I explore creative ways to paint while incorporating light and textures.” A versatile artist, she works in oil, acrylic, and watercolors. The native Floridian paints daily in her studio overlooking Fifth Avenue South in Naples. She welcomes visitors to her eponymous gallery and is always happy to engage in discussion with art lovers; she especially enjoys chatting with children who are interested in becoming artists. Grateful for her talent, James emphasizes: “I didn’t decide to become an artist. I was born an artist.” James was named one of 10 Women of Initiative by Collier Community Foundation in 2018. She gratefully donates her artwork, time, and money to various local charities, including Baby Basics and the Naples Botanical Garden. (emilyjamesart.com)

Purposeful giving
MEGAN DIPIERO PHOTOGRAPHY
I
am thrilled to introduce this year’s definitive guide to Naples’ charitable organizations and their major fundraising activities. The Naples Charity Register is a mustread prior to the beginning of the social season, not only to help plan one’s calendar but also to help align one’s heart with one’s wallet. I am in awe of the boundless philanthropy that defines our Naples community. From the 93 varied submissions we received this year, it is evident that when there is a need in Collier County, people listen and leap to action. It also means that when we choose to give, we can give with purpose, finding a cause that is personally meaningful. For the past five years I have had the privilege of volunteering for the annual toy drive organized by the Collier Building Industry Association (CBIA). It is a fun experience purchasing a variety of toys, delivering them to a school, and then watching the smiles on the children’s faces when the stage curtain rises to reveal a sea of toys. The excitement, joy, and appreciation are palpable—reminding me of the profound impact of heartfelt giving. There are numerous generous souls in our community. In addition to financial donations, be reminded there are other ways to be charitable: with our gifts of time and service, such as mentoring. Through purpose-driven charity we can create a lasting impact that resonates throughout the year. Let’s make this a season of purposeful charitable giving that yields peace and happiness.

n her diary, Anne Frank wrote: “No one has ever become poor by giving.” Frank was only a teenager when she made this astute observation. I believe it will remain forever veracious. When we turn our hearts and minds outward, we learn about the issues, concerns, struggles, and needs within our local community; we find out where we can share our time and talents and where we can donate some of the wealth we have been so blessed to receive. The listings included in this year’s Naples Charity Register— ranging from golf tournaments to black-tie balls—present 93 opportunities to give to others. Many of the nonprofits have existed for decades and their corresponding events have been celebrated for as long. While donations continue to surpass amounts raised in previous years, it must also be true that giving makes us richer. Included in this issue are articles delving into why and how people give (page 27) and how to vet a charity (page 30). Nick Shirghio’s beautiful photos of Florida’s Everglades illustrate “Protecting Our Paradise” (page 42), hopefully inspiring a commitment to continue preserving and restoring this precious habitat in our backyard. In “Face Value” (page 46), local photographer Michelle Tricca shares numerous poignant photos from the monumental public art display she recently realized in Immokalee. For a little fun and frivolity, we’ve included six pages of fabulous jewelry, so you can start dreaming and planning your gala outfits (page 52). Cheers to a season of festivity filled with good food and drink and boatloads of fun with like-minded friends. May you grow rich through giving.

GIVING BACK
CHARITABLE GIVING ISN’T JUST A FINANCIAL DECISION By Karen Feldman Collier County is aptly called the Paradise Coast, but even paradise has its problems. A shortage of affordable housing. Homelessness. Access to health care, mental health services, and substance abuse treatment. These are just a few. There are charitable organizations striving to solve these complex issues. Others work to advance treatment for specific diseases, and still
more are devoted to a vast array of environmental, animal, and social welfare concerns. How then are potential donors to decide which to support? Creating a coherent philanthropic plan can be challenging, especially in a place with such an abundance of worthy causes. In most cases, the starting point is identifying the causes that matter personally.
“For us, charity starts at home,” says Michael Wynn, president of Sunshine Ace Hardware and chairman of Wynn Family Companies. Many of their employees were so severely affected by Hurricane Irma that the Wynns felt moved to do something more far-reaching than issuing one-time assistance checks. In collaboration with the Collier Community

downtown campus. As a member of the hospital’s board of trustees and someone who also helps review applicants for available positions, Wynn says, “I’m watching the number of physicians in the top five to 10 in their field already buying into the vision. “It will be one of the most transformative projects in Naples’ history. We’re looking at the opportunity to be in the top 50 cardiac institutes in the country. The impact to the area, to save lives of community members, associates, their family members, that’s what led us to give our largest gift.” Health concerns also guided Jeff and Julie Diermeier of Naples in their giving. “There’s a fair amount of cancer in our family, so health is important to us,” says Diermeier. “We also want to give a helping hand to those less fortunate.” Diermeier calls that desire nice and selfish. “It’s nice to see people get a fair shot, and it’s selfish from an economic and financial perspective. We need as many people as possible in our community to be healthy and productive to provide goods and services to the greater good and reduce the number in dependent situations.” A chartered financial analyst (CFA), Diermeier is the retired president and CEO of the CFA Institute, an organization that sets standards of ethics, education, and professionalism for those
Foundation, they established the Wynn Family Foundation and created standards for qualifying for grants; the Collier Community Foundation then screened applicants and awarded the funds. By early June, Wynn reports, “We [were] able to give our associates roughly $300,000 through the foundation for everything from storm recovery and cancer to accidents and financial hardship [assistance].” He also notes, “We recently added another category: extreme housing-cost burden.” Besides helping those who have experienced an unexpected downturn, Wynn believes this form of generosity has another benefit. “This is an opportunity for other employers having challenges with staffing,” he says. “When you put people as a priority, help them in their greatest time of need, that creates loyalty.” That same philosophy led to the Wynns’ recent $1 million gift to the NCH Baker Hospital. The donation will go toward building the new proposed cardiac and stroke facility on the 28
holding the CFA designation. He’s also a trustee for the 20-year-old Diermeier Family Foundation, along with his wife, and serves on several boards. For Allyson Richards of Marco Island, and her husband, cancer is a top priority, followed by an assortment of social ills. “We both lost our first spouses to cancer,” she says. “We also have passions for education, food insecurity, and loneliness.” A retired corporate vice president of human resources, Richards spreads her philanthropic attention broadly—from seniors and families to children, farmworkers, and pets. She’s chair for the board of directors of Our Daily Bread Food Pantry, serving Naples and Marco Island. Being a boots-on-the-ground kind of person, Richards is likely the one driving the mobile food pantry that serves individuals with limited mobility or those who are unable to visit the pantry. In an effort to combat both hunger and loneliness, she helps put on monthly Lunch with Friends events at Marco Island Lutheran Church; lunches are donated, and there are speakers and door prizes. A reservation is the only requirement to attend. Often 60 or more people enjoy a meal and fellowship. Richards also supports other local nonprofits, including Marco Island Historical Society, the YMCA, Alliance for Period Supplies, and For the Love of Cats. She believes in the power of scholarships as well, but not just for college-

bound students. She makes a point of ensuring that any scholarship she helps to establish allows the recipient to pursue either college or vocational training. “Not everyone should go to college,” she says. Richards is a big believer in organizations pooling their talents for the greater good. For Thanksgiving and Christmas, “we get six groups together and make sandwiches for all the migrant farmers working at Lipman Farms—usually 500 or 600. We get bread, meat, cheese, the labor to put the sandwiches together, fruit from the food pantry, cookies from another group, [and] the Catholic Church adds rosaries.” Richards finds the collaboration as rewarding as the charity. “I love life here, the people here,” she says. “I love the ability to work with so many different people.” For Diermeier, collaboration is a must. “Look for an organization that isn’t redundant with other organizations and that is collaborating with others,” he says. He’s chosen to support organizations such as the Guadalupe Center, which helps educate at-risk children, and David Lawrence Centers for Behavioral Health, because he believes the area is underserved when it comes to mental health services. The shrinking availability of affordable housing for area workers is another major and growing problem, he believes. Like Richards, he thinks vocational training deserves more attention. “There are wonderful jobs out there that

can be fulfilling, help families, and require skills,” Diermeier says. Winnowing down the organizations based on your interests and their potential should result in a more manageable list of possibilities to research. There are a variety of websites that can offer more insight. A valuable local resource is the Collier Community Foundation; it optimizes charitable giving through knowledge of the community and the diverse populations and needs it serves. To begin working with a charity, Diermeier recommends giving a starter gift to see how the group handles it. “You can see how they respond,” he says. “It gives you an opportunity for a one-on-one meeting, perhaps you’ll be invited to a forum. You can see how they follow up.” Like Richards and Diermeier, Wynn sees his philanthropy as something that helps individuals but reaches further to benefit the community as well. “What guides us as a family is where do we see the greatest need and opportunity to make an impact on the broader community,” Wynn explains. For example, the family has supported Florida Gulf Coast University’s entrepreneurship program to help improve the area’s workforce. Their foundation donated $100,000 to Gulfshore Playhouse’s new building fund to improve the cultural landscape in Naples. Wynn sums it up best: “Ultimately, it comes down to we’ve been incredibly blessed and, following the example set by my grandparents, we reinvest in the community that’s given so much to us.” NAPLES CHARITY REGISTER

Vetting a Charity DUE DILIGENCE COUNTS IN PHILANTHROPIC INVESTING, TOO By Karen Feldman
So many charitable organizations appear to be doing good—but behind the scenes, are they also doing well? Are they serving an important community need? Getting results for a reasonable price? There are several excellent sources that can help potential donors find answers to these questions, narrow their choices, and feel comfortable when they decide to invest their philanthropic dollars. Nonprofit online entities, such as Charity Navigator and Candid, provide information that is helpful for assessing organizations in general, along with ratings and specific information on many not-for-profits. For a more personal touch and access to experts from local organizations, the Collier Community Foundation (CCF) provides a wealth of resources. Vetting a Charity CONTINUED For donors who invest through CCF, Simmelink says, “Our financial and grant software has built-in features that confirm a charity is in good standing with the IRS before we process a gift. We also collect outcomes reports to ensure the dollars were used as intended and take appropriate action if grant funds or donor dollars were not used as intended.” Because CCF has a paid subscription to Candid, it has access to additional information about organizations it can share with donors. Simmelink also checks the IRS website to determine why a nonprofit’s 501(c)(3) status has been revoked. CCF can lend a hand in decision-making in another way as well, because of its team’s deep knowledge of the nonprofit community. “We use our network of public, private, and nonprofit relationships to verify information, learn about programs, avoid funding duplication of services, help replicate success, and fund the greatest areas of need,” Simmelink notes. At a time when groups are looking to join forces to maximize their impact, “we function as a neutral convener,” Simmelink says, “bringing people together who normally may not come to 32
the table together. It tends to reduce duplication of effort while helping them all achieve their common goal.” For Naples resident Jeff Diermeier, a retired investment manager and head of The CFA Institute, that’s a key consideration. “You want to get involved with sustainable, impactful not-for-profits,” he says. “No not-forprofit can go it alone. It’s really important that they are collaborating as opposed to fighting over turf. Money needs to be employed in a crosscollaboration. CCF can be very helpful in steering you to quality organizations that have passed their muster.” For the Wynn family, owners of Wynn Family Companies, teaming up with CCF was ideal when they decided to create a foundation after Hurricane Irma. Michael Wynn, chairman of Wynn Family Companies and president of Sunshine Ace Hardware, says the family set the parameters for grants to be awarded to their employees who had come upon hard times. Then they turned the process over to CCF to review applications and make the awards, “taking ourselves completely out of the
decision-making process.” That’s something that many donors prefer and can be managed through the establishment of a donor-advised fund as well. It is set up in the donors’ names, they decide where the money goes, and the foundation manages the paperwork. “We direct giving according to their instructions and manage all their paperwork, and they have one tax receipt instead of managing multiple receipts,” Simmelink says. And that leaves more time and energy to figure out how to do more good in the community.

The Great Wealth Transfer BABY BOOMERS ARE BEGINNING TO TRANSFER A STAGGERING AMOUNT OF WEALTH TO FAMILY AND CHARITIES, CREATING TRANSFORMATIVE PHILANTHROPIC OPPORTUNITIES By Cathy Chestnut
Over the coming decades, baby boomers—the wealthiest generation in American history—will be passing the fruits of their prosperity to their children, grandchildren, and other beneficiaries. How much? An astounding $68 trillion (or more) in homes, businesses, and investments. Experts have coined this phenomenon the “Great Wealth Transfer,” and they predict it will fuel societal shifts and have a monumental impact in philanthropy. Community foundations are starting conversations in their regions to raise awareness about this wealth 38
transfer and the importance of including a philanthropic element in estate plans. If a percentage of that wealth is earmarked for charitable giving, it would be a game changer in communities across the nation. That’s why Ashley Heath Dietz, president and CEO of the Florida Philanthropic Network, has been traveling the state to talk with community, education, health, corporate, and family foundations and other grantmaking organizations about their plans for capturing a portion of this historic treasure to create endowments that will ensure long-term funding
for nonprofit programming. “It’s an exciting time,” she says. “One of the best things foundations can do is to be transparent about what the projected transfer will be in the next 10, 25, 50 years. For donors who want to leave a legacy in their community with those dollars, this is such a huge opportunity.” Palm Beach and Martin counties are projecting a $114 billion transfer from one generation to the next by 2030. Capturing 5 percent of that wealth could support $6.5 billion in local grantmaking over the next 20 years, according to the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties. In Collier County, $34.8 billion is expected to change hands over the next 10 years. Sums like these may seem staggering, so the Collier Community Foundation (CCF) is working to explain to the part-time and year-round residents in the greater Naples area that just 3 percent of those billions could result in a $1 billion endowment at CCF that would generate $50 million annually to address community needs. Dietz emphasizes that it’s not only wealthy individuals who can invest in a better future. Estate plans are key in life and death for everyone to ensure that their assets are distributed in accordance with their wishes and protected from time-consuming and costly probate. They are crucial if you become incapacitated and can no longer handle your affairs. Incorporating a charitable remainder trust into an estate plan is a savvy financial move: it can reduce or eliminate capital gains and reduce the size of a taxable estate. It provides income for a specified term, with the remainder passing to charity—a win-win. Benefactors have several investment options for supporting their favorite causes and passions at a community foundation: donoradvised funds, nonprofit funds, legacy planning, scholarships, and unrestricted funds. “Community foundations are such a trusted source between donors and the nonprofit community,” says Dietz. “They are the vehicle to be sure that money goes to the communities in need. As things shift and change in a community or a nonprofit, they can vet needs and be nimbler to shift funding.”«

ound only one place on earth, a massive green and brown river of grass—known simply as the Everglades—inhabits 1.5 million acres of subtropical wilderness in southern Florida. The freshwater that trickles through this unique biosphere provides drinking water to millions of Floridians and supports vital sectors of South Florida’s economy, including tourism and agriculture. It also provides precious habitats for numerous species of plants and animals. On the perimeter of this great river, humans have set up camp, dotting the coastal landscape with arteries of highways, high-rises, golf courses, tennis courts, hotels, airports, housing developments, and strip malls. Who can fault people for wanting to live or vacation in this coastal landscape? It is a beautiful part of the country, boasting an ideal climate. In December 2022, the U.S. Census Bureau reported Florida the nation’s fastest growing state—a title it has not held since 1957. But as the population grows, so too do the demands we place on our unique natural resources. Human activity, pollution, lack of fresh water, and rising sea levels have earned the Everglades a troubling distinction: one of the most endangered ecosystems
in the world. This life-sustaining and productive biosphere, with its dense meadows of seagrass that sequester carbon and the country’s largest mangrove community fastidiously protecting the shoreline, is at risk of disappearing. Governmental agencies exist to safeguard our natural resources. The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is Florida’s lead agency responsible for environmental protection; defending, conserving, and managing Florida’s natural resources; and enforcing the state’s environmental laws. The DEP manages Florida’s 175 state parks, more than 12 million acres of public lands, and 4 million acres of coastal and submerged lands. Southwest Florida has no shortage of citizens who have chosen to align themselves with registered nonprofits— 501(c)(3) organizations—that have made restoring and protecting the nearby environment their reason for existence. They include the following: The Alliance for Florida’s National Parks Established in 2002, this organization is the official nonprofit partner for Everglades National Park, Dry Tortugas National Park, and Biscayne National Park, as well as Big Cypress National PreNAPLES CHARITY REGISTER

serve. It is responsible for raising awareness and financial support to fund programs ensuring Florida’s natural ecosystems are preserved and protected for generations to come. Communications & Development Director Bailey Johnson notes that for more than 23 years The Swamp Water and Me Program has been funded in the Naples and Big Cypress areas. “Every sixth-grade student in Collier County has the opportunity to become a scientist for the day inside the Big Cypress National Preserve,” explains Johnson. “When humans understand the value of the Everglades, they become activists.” In February 2024, the eighth annual Wine & Wildlife fundraiser will be held at the Naples Sailing & Yacht Club. The event also includes an awards ceremony for the Clyde Butcher A Better Florida Award, recognizing an artist dedicated to preserving Florida’s natural beauty. (floridanationalparks.org) Conservancy of Southwest Florida The Conservancy was founded in 1964 by a small group of concerned citizens thwarting plans for a proposed road through 110,000 acres of coastal lands and waters in Southwest Florida. Sixty years later, it serves five counties and maintains a mission to protect Southwest 44
Florida’s unique natural environment and quality of life—through research, education, and policy—now and forever. Director of Communications and Marketing Katy Hennig has served with the Conservancy for one year. She describes it as “a small entity—with about 46 paid positions, an internship program of about 24 college graduates, and around 200 volunteers.” “Development is inevitable,” Hennig
mentions, but the Conservancy pushes for “smart growth,” ensuring adequate supplies of water and resources for all who want to enjoy the area. “It’s a balancing act,” she says. “We need to ask what is right and good for the community.” The Conservancy’s largest annual fundraiser—Magic Under the Mangroves—will celebrate its twentieth year raising money for programs to protect the water, land, wildlife,

exceeding those numbers at their upcoming event scheduled on March 19, 2024. What Goetz finds especially heartening is how Everglades restoration appeals to our next generation, noting that “clean water, healthy beaches and waterways, and a vibrant economy are issues that resonate with young people.” (evergladesfoundation.org)
and future of nearby regions. Since 1994, Magic Under the Mangroves has raised more than $18 million. (conservancy.org) The Everglades Foundation An influential player, The Everglades Foundation has become a respected and important advocate for the restoration of the beloved wetlands. Last year, the nonprofit celebrated 30 years of working to restore and protect America’s Everglades through science, advocacy, and education. Their Everglades Literacy Program is a free initiative, empowering teachers with tools and knowledge to help students understand the ecological and economic value of the Ever-
glades. In Collier County, 426 teachers have been trained to date, and two schools have been declared champion schools for their exceptional literacy efforts: Golden Gate Middle School and Lake Park Elementary School. The Everglades Foundation hosts a gala event (ForEverglades Naples) where for the past 10 years guests have gathered to raise money to meet the vision of an Everglades with abundant freshwater for consumption, enjoyment, ecological health, and economic growth. Ellin Goetz, vice chair for The Everglades Foundation and co-chair for ForEverglades Naples, reported this past year’s benefit broke a record both in funds raised and number of attendees; she looks forward to
Friends of Rookery Bay Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve stretches across 110,000 acres and protects 40 percent of Collier County’s coastline. The ongoing mission of Friends of Rookery Bay, a nonprofit citizen support organization in existence for more than 35 years, is to connect people with Southwest Florida’s dynamic coastal environment. Athan Barkoukis, executive director, Friends of Rookery Bay, says “the nonprofit is focused on community building and fundraising.” One of the annual fundraising events is Bash for the Bay, where vital monetary support for programs and operations is raised. According to Barkoukis, this coming year’s event will be the fifteenth annual. He reminds, “millions of dollars have been raised over the years.” (rookerybay.org) The common thread in each of these four organizations—formed to protect and restore the precious Everglades—is education. “The more we can educate and make aware, the more ambassadors we will have for years to come,” says Barkoukis. « NAPLES CHARITY REGISTER

Michelle Tricca moved to Naples in 2005 from San Diego, California. It was an opportunity for her to revive her finances and reestablish herself as a portrait photographer. Tricca had every intention of moving back to the West Coast after one year. But that didn’t happen—even when she was finally debt free. As she traversed her new hometown, Tricca noticed numerous bland and boring cement walls; she wondered why little public art existed in Collier County and why these obvious canvases remained empty. As an artist, Tricca is constantly in search of opportunities to create projects—especially ones that fill her heart and soul. About adding meaningful art to the physical environment, she remembers finally telling herself: “Michelle, you be the change.” Tricca began visualizing portraits on the cement walls she drove by every day in the Bayshore neighborhood where she eventually moved. One day she visited the Bayshore Gateway Triangle Community Redevelopment Agency (BGT CRA) and shared her vision. Within five minutes, over a simple handshake, Tricca received the blessing to begin work on her idea. A 1,300-square-foot mural consisting of 1,000 portraits debuted on the side wall of a golf cart repair shop on Bayshore Drive in late March of 2011. “A Face in the Crowd” captured the diversity in the neighborhood with black-and-white photos of people of all ages and ethnicities hung side by side in harmony. The exhibition lasted nine months—about as long as the photos endured the outdoor elements. As her residency in Naples continued, Tricca would often visit Immokalee—mingling with the local people,

perusing the farmers market, and volunteering as a mentor with The Immokalee Foundation. “I loved the small and colorful town,” she recalls. But here too she struggled to understand all the bland and boring walls she saw. In 2018, she visited The Immokalee Chamber of Commerce with the hope of constructing a public art installation similar to the one she completed on Bayshore Drive. “Within Collier County, Immokalee and Bayshore are the only two areas officially sanctioned for public art murals,” notes Tricca. The small agricultural town of Immokalee, described by Tricca as “underrecognized and economically challenged,” is only 30 miles from the pristine and coastal city of Naples, where golf courses and mega mansions dominate. “Both are part of Collier County,” she adds. Tricca was acutely aware of the disparity between the two locales, recognizing the small
rural community at times even suffered from a negative public image. An acquaintance, who had never visited Immokalee, questioned why Tricca would visit what they assumed was a dangerous town. She believed an exhibition of photos of Immokalee residents displayed in prominent places could help better humanize the community. “Art can be used as activism,” says Tricca. The walls of a nondescript packing house owned by Lipman Family Farms provided the perfect canvas. Jaime Weisinger, a fourth generation Lipman family member, who serves as director, community and government relations, explains that Tricca came to them with her vision for the building. “It was an idea born solely from Michelle,” he says. “We are as much a part of the fabric of the community as the residents. Once Michelle explained the scale and scope of the project, it made perfect sense.” After a few years of fundraising (including a $25,000 grant from Florida Department of State, Division of Arts & Culture and the National Endowment for the Arts) and some strategic planning, Tricca was able to create “The Face of Immokalee,” which included supersized black-and-white portraits covering two 50-foot walls of the packing house. To capture an even NAPLES CHARITY REGISTER

broader audience, Tricca suggested covering the sides of two 53-foot semitruck trailers owned by Lipman Family Farms; these are attached to trucks driving daily between Lipman’s farms and the packing house. To expose the art to people outside of Immokalee, the trucks make periodic drives through Coastal Collier County. Although initially concerned how many residents would want to participate in the project, Tricca worried for not. “There was a lot of enthusiasm and engagement with the project,” she notes. Every single photo—of those who showed up—is exhibited, for a total of 258. There are 221 portraits on the walls (one wall with 216 portraits; the other with five). Each side of the two semitruck trailers shows eight portraits; the rear of one truck shows four portraits and the rear of the other shows just one, for a grand total of 37 mobile portraits. Tricca notes that this public art exhibit is anomalous in that it’s hosted on four separate surfaces—including mobile ones—for the “purpose of ultimate accessibility.” The exhibition officially launched on April 16. This time Tricca found a better-quality medium so the art would last longer. “Mother Nature will decide how long,” she says, but Tricca is hoping for five years. “There has been a great response—especially from the kids,”
relates Weisinger. “They are snapshots in time of a community and depending on how long the art lasts, the subjects will be able to revisit their portraits over the years.” Further good news for Tricca included learning that The Baker Museum will display select portraits from November 2023 through April 2024 in an exhibition called “The Face of Immokalee at The Baker Museum.” Courtney McNeil, museum director and chief curator at Artis—Naples, explains that Tricca’s work will
be shown within the third floor Blair Foundation Gallery concurrently with the exhibition “The Art of Food: From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation.” This national touring exhibition of modern and contemporary works by prominent artists uses an artistic lens to examine food beyond its purpose as body fuel. “For us here in Southwest Florida … it is a special opportunity to reflect on the impacts of agriculture and food production in our part

of the world,” relates McNeil. “Visitors may not realize that the community of Immokalee is responsible for producing 90 percent of Florida’s tomatoes and is also the birthplace of the Fair Food Program, an internationally lauded program protecting the human rights of farmworkers, stabilizing the workforce for growers, and allowing retailers to participate in a system that eliminates supply chain labor abuses.” When McNeil first saw Tricca’s black-and-white photos, she remembers thinking they were “so direct. They really allowed humanity to shine through.” The flex-space gallery on the third floor of The Baker Museum, purposely designed for community-based initiatives, boasts a linear space that McNeil decided would be the perfect place to showcase a selection of Tricca’s portraits. “We are featuring Michelle’s photographs to bring awareness to and inspire new perspectives on the community of Immokalee,” says McNeil. “Not just the farmers but all those who live and work there.” If a picture says a thousand words, then Tricca has authored a veritable novel—one of a vibrant agricultural community with an abundant personality. As an artist, she is motivated by the human condition, believing photographs have the power “to connect, illicit interest, open minds, initiate compassion, and promote social change.” «

Displaced during Hurricane Ian, Gary, a pit bull mix, found a forever home in Naples.

LOCAL SHELTERS MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR PETS DURING AND AFTER HURRICANE IAN
ake no mistake. Even though Gary offered our camera a serious pose, he has a lot to smile about. He hit the adoption jackpot, landing a veterinarian for a mother and the founder of BarkBox, an online subscription service tailored for dogs, for a father. Displaced during Hurricane Ian, the pit bull mix from the Clewiston area suffered a broken shoulder and found shelter at Humane Society Naples. Before Ian made landfall, the local shelter cleared as much space as they could. “Our team is great,” informs Sarah Baeckler, chief executive officer, Humane Society Naples, relaying that many staff members even spent the night during the worst of the storm with the remaining pets. Once they determined their own buildings were fine, they worked alongside Collier County Domestic Animal Services (CCDAS) in disaster relief efforts, reuniting found pets with their owners and working to find forever homes for many of the pets (including bunnies, cats, and guinea pigs) that found themselves uprooted and homeless. “We transferred in 562 animals from area shelters,” informs Baeckler. “We served as a waystation for 200 more.” In total, Baeckler reports that of the 762 animals that came into the shelter, 503 were transported to partner shelters around the country—from Bellevue, Washington, to Binghamton, New York. “An additional 30 went into a safekeeping program called Operation Rescue,” she states. “Most of them have been reunited with their families now.” Veterinarian Edna May Seymour works with both organizations and had the privilege of providing medical care to prepare the animals for their flights. Some were deemed too sick to travel. Gary, needing medical attention, was one who stayed behind. “He quickly captured my heart,” says Seymour. “I decided to adopt him myself—he became my first foster failure.” Not only do these organizations do great things during and after natural disasters, “they do great things every single day, constantly striving to help animals in need,” says Seymour. She encourages learning about fostering pets to save their lives, recently raising more than $12,000 in support of CCDAS in one evening at a fundraiser she and husband, Matt Meeker, hosted.
