We were very impressed with Michelle’s responsiveness, communication, and market knowledge from the moment that we reached out for information, and this continued throughout the entire listing and closing process. She was also able to navigate the multiple offers and negotiate the best price and terms possible. The attention to detail from Michelle and her team was impressive, and the high level of service continued well after our closing day. I would consider our experience to be five-star in every way and will refer her to any family and friends looking to purchase or sell in the Naples or Marco Island area.

a legacy of love AMIDST GRIEF CAME A JOYFUL TRADITION. After losing my husband, Jon, to leukemia in December 2016, I continued our family tradition of donating toys at Christmastime while honoring his passion for giving by launching a heartfelt Christmas toy drive at his memorial service. It became an annual tradition itself in his memory and grew to be the largest toy drive to benefit Kentucky Children’s Hospital. Now I am excited to bring this tradition to Naples, collecting toys to benefit children here!
We invite you to share in his spirit of giving and donate a NEW, UNWRAPPED TOY to a child in need this Christmas season. To learn more about our annual Christmas toy drive and the foundations we benefit, visit janaseaman.com or call 239-249-5806.

On the cover Sharing Abundance, this year’s winning cover artwork by Adorable Monique, “speaks to the importance of unity, growing together while caring for our community, and valuing the bountiful resources within,” she says. Continuing the Naples Charity Register’s theme of community collaboration, we invite local artists to submit a piece for consideration for the annual publication’s cover. Monique earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes, and a bachelor’s degree in teaching visual arts from the Universidad Pedagógica Nacional de Francisco Morazán, both in Honduras. Born in Chicago, the award-winning artist lives in Naples. Her work has been displayed locally at the Naples Depot Museum and Norris Community Center, and she has painted a mural at the Honduran Institute of Family.

ooking back on the past year, the resilience of Naples’ philanthropic community consistently amazed me. Even though many major fundraising events for local charities were canceled, major donors and sponsors helped fill in financial gaps. Nonprofit ’ development teams worked diligently to reach out to donors and devise innovative online auctions, appeals, and hybrid events to keep their trains on the tracks. There was a wave of optimism approaching the 20212022 charitable fundraising season, but uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 delta variant began to crest as we were going to print for our twenty-fi st annual Naples Charity Register. Despite the unknowns, one thing is certain: We must all keep rowing together to support the organizations that provide the community's safety net around needs ranging from medical care, abuse, mental illness, veterans, legal aid, education, and animal welfare. And we can’t overlook the amenities that enrich our lives during the highs and the lows, including the arts, historical preservation, and the environment. The novel coronavirus has thrown a wrench into the economy—and local needs have grown considerably. As charities and event chairs grappled last year with “how to make it work,” I was most impressed with their creativity. I have seen everything from virtual live bidding sites to drive-in events to home-delivered dinner kits and swag bags with bidding paddles and the ingredients for the perfect cocktail (a proven element for higher bidding!). In light of pandemic challenges, we modified the Naples Charity Register format to accommodate the shifting world of philanthropy by incorporating campaign appeals and virtual and at-home events. But as you see in these pages, this is a community that is eager to gather again for worthy causes—one ready to embrace a post-pandemic, new normal. Let’s do what we can to keep the momentum going by supporting and participating in these community-unifying events. More than ever, local charitable organizations are relying on Naples’ phenomenal philanthropic spirit.

Hope & High Notes W
e were all hoping that COVID-19 would be in the rearview mirror by now. While vaccinations hit a plateau as the delta variant spread rapidly, planning for this year’s charitable season toggled between unbridled optimism and trepidation. True to Naples’ unparalleled philanthropic spirit, a host of wonderful events are included in this year’s Naples Charity Register. This giving community is determined to gather and celebrate their favorite causes together again. None of us has a crystal ball to see what lies ahead for the 2021-2022 season. We do know that there are hundreds of nonprofits that serve as Collier County’s social safety net, working tirelessly to make this place—our home—stronger and more vibrant. Each nonprofit has been hit hard fina cially and operationally, and they are relying on the gracious generosity of Collier County residents to help them meet critical needs in this community. The Naples Charity Register is a 21-year tradition introduced by the publishers of Naples Illustrated to showcase the effervescent events and invaluable impact of local charitable organizations and passionate philanthropists. This year, the Naples Charity Register focuses on good-news stories that prove Collier is a home with a big heart (page 21), local philanthropists who made a lasting impact (page 24), and innovative fundraising events (page 34). We explore how trends in giving have changed in the past decade (page 26) and applaud the high notes within the hard-hit performing arts community (page 96). We also look ahead, through 93 charity listings (page 51), which highlight how organizations are moving forward with their signature fundraising events and campaigns. And, because we all need sparkle in our lives, we have included another tradition: a dazzling, marine-themed jewelry spread (page 40) that emboldens through beauty. We hope you are inspired by the Naples Charity Register to support the causes that are most important to you to keep Collier County the strong and vibrant community that it is today.

IN THE CHARITABLE WORLD, GOOD NEWS COMES IN ROBUST NUMBERS By Cathy Chestnut
Rising above the tribulations of the past two years, here are some of the good-news stories that prove that Collier County is a caring community with a bountiful heart.
021_GIVINGBACK_NUMBERS_2022.indd 21
The Naples Children & Education Foundation’s (NCEF) The world-renowned Naples Winter Wine Festival went online in January 2021 but still raised approximately $7.4 million, bringing the total amount raised by the festival to nearly $220 million since its inception in 2001. NCEF was able to invest more than $9.2 million in 32 nonprofit organizations that fill fundamental gaps in local children’s services. The foundation also invested $75,000 in the free, bilingual Collier
CARES (Community Application for Resources and Emergency Services) App which connects people in need with social services resources from a tap of their cellphone.

raising amount of $6.44 million in February 2021 compared to $5.7 million in 2020. The number of donors increased by 24 percent, online giving increased by 26 percent, and total gifts increased by 33 percent. The biggest winner during Give Where You Live Collier 2021 was the Naples Senior Center, which received a $1 million donation from Jay and Patty Baker for the construction of a new senior center (the couple has donated $5 million in total to the project). The center’s one-day total was $1.48 million by 133 donors. Other organizations that significa tly benefited were Grace Place for Children & Families, with 105 donors giving $596,504, followed by the Conservancy of Southwest Florida at $507,235 from 136 donors. 22
Philanthropists, volunteers, foundations, and fundraising event planners pulled together to support a range of pressing needs throughout the community.
St. Matthew’s House St. Matthew’s House was one of the fi st to move its fundraising appeal online when one of its biggest fundraisers of the year, a charity golf tournament scheduled for March 2020, was canceled when the state went into lockdown. Nick Porter, development operations manager, rebooted this 20-year tradition into a “Virtual 200K Race” that encouraged supporters to raise funds by doing whatever they love: walking, running, paddleboarding, or even reading. “I was shooting for the stars,” Porter recalls. It raised, much to his surprise, $130,000 to support homelessness, addiction, and skyrocketing hunger.
Conservancy of Southwest Florida The Conservancy of Southwest Florida reimagined its annual Magic Under the Mangroves by streaming the modified event along with a short list of auction items, netting $1.4 million, making it one of the highest-grossing events of the improvised season. Called the Magic Hour, the 2021 event was organized by Conservancy Events and Corporate Relations Manager Chanel McGregor and Rick Kash and board member Katrina Lundmark-Kash, who served as chair.

The League Club
The United Way of Collier and the Keys The United Way of Collier and the Keys was formed through the merger of the United Way of the Florida Keys and the United Way of Collier County in April 2020. Throughout the pandemic, United Way distributed $7.2 million in federal CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act funding for housing aid to Collier County residents, which kept more than a thousand people in their homes. A Volunteer Florida grant enabled United Way to repair or rebuild 57 homes that were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Irma—37 of them for seniors. The agency also distributed $1 million to 21 nonprofi partners in Collier County.
021_GIVINGBACK_NUMBERS_2022.indd 23
The League Club distributed $352,569 to 23 nonprofit in Collier and Lee counties to address community needs. An additional $48,444 was donated by the organization to the Collier Comes Together Coronavirus Relief Fund, Harry Chapin Food Bank, and St. Matthew’s food pantry.
NCH Healthcare System NCH Healthcare System received a $5.7 million gift from the Bill and Julia Van Domelen Foundation in May 2021 to enhance and expand the services offered at the NCH Women’s and Children’s Pavilion by adding high-priority staff positions and training for inpatient staff and operating room and emergency department teams to elevate the neonatal intensive care unit to a Level III NICU. Though the foundation is based in Michigan, Julia Van Domelen has close ties to Naples.
Artis-Naples Artis-Naples received two separate, anonymous $1 million matching challenge gifts in 2020 that were met by January 2021. The gifts were “intended to inspire support during this season impacted by COVID-19,” according to Artis-Naples.
golisano Children's health Center of Naples In November 2020, the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation issued a $200,000 challenge grant to build a pediatric hematology and oncology infusion clinic at the Golisano Children’s Health Center of Naples. The Naples-based Clark Family Foundation met the match by donating $100,000. NAPLES CHARITY REGISTER

When nonprofits leaned on their biggest supporters, they stepped up with grace and generosity By Anne Miller
In the face of uncertainty and pandemic challenges, Collier County’s hundreds of nonprofi organizations turned to their major benefactors for financia backing to keep programs and operations running. Meet some of the philanthropists who stepped in to make significa t impacts during the past two tumultuous years for fundraising.
Jay and Patty Baker with Kristen Coury
Jay and Patty Baker Bolstering the arts, health care, and community Jay and Patty Baker are synonymous with philanthropy in Collier County (and far, far beyond). The Bakers’ boundless generosity and steadfast enthusiasm for supporting the Naples community wasn’t dimmed by the global pandemic. They doubled an early $10 million gift to the Gulfshore Playhouse’s Next Stage capital campaign to build the Baker Theatre and Education Center with another $10 million challenge, bringing their total contribution to $20 million. Their second challenge gift was matched within 42 days. “This is a gift for Naples and beyond,” says Gulfshore Playhouse CEO/Producing Artistic Director Kristen Coury. The couple also stepped up generously for The Naples Players with a challenge gift during its Front & Center Gala and committed $5 million to the 30,000-square-foot Naples Senior 24
Center, which recently broke ground. Years ago, the Bakers generously funded the eponymous art museum at Artis–Naples. In early 2021, they partnered with Neapolitans Herbert P. and Jeanette Montgomery Evert to gift the outdoor installation Red Reeds by Dale Chihuly to the museum. The Bakers have been recognized for other leading gifts: the downtown NCH Baker Hospital Emergency Department and Baker Patient Care Tower at the North Naples NCH campus; Baker Field sportsplex at the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County; and 15-acre Baker Park along the Gordon River.

Jim and Clara LaGrippe Sharing nature’s exquisite beauty Jim and Clara LaGrippe’s new monthly gift to the Naples Botanical Garden has funded the acquisition of more than 500 display orchids for the LaGrippe Orchid Garden, including 58 species and 14 cultivars or hybrids—many rare and not typically found elsewhere. The LaGrippe Orchid Garden debuted in 2014, and the couple has been long-standing supporters of the Naples Botanical Garden. “The LaGrippe Orchid Garden is our gift to the Naples community,” he says.

Dale and Barbara Morrison Laying the foundation for hands-on construction experience In 2021, Dale and Barbara Morrison fully funded their second single-family residence at The Immokalee Foundation’s 18-home Career Pathways Learning Lab subdivision—building community in every sense of the word. The subdivision’s homes are being planned and constructed by Immokalee Foundation students alongside BCB Homes professionals and other contractors to learn hands-on skills for high-demand careers. Estimated home construction costs are $245,000 to $260,000. Collier Enterprises donated the 8.3 acres of land for the Learning Lab subdivision on Foundation Way. “Experiential learning is the best way for students to learn,” Dale says. Barbara, a foundation board member, is proud that “these students are not just building houses,
Providing mentorship and connectivity for local youths Longtime supporters of the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County, George and Juliana Phillips were at the forefront of all of the organization’s virtual events and special fundraisers from the pandemic’s start, providing scholarships and leading donations. Their more than $50,000 in support ensured club participants had access to meals and school supplies, and supported “our virtual clubhouse to keep our staff and members connected during one of the most diffi ult times they have ever faced,” says Dena Liston, chief development offi er.
Myrt Rose and Rene and Tish Champagne Preserving local history far into the future The Marco Island Historical Society’s $5 million endowment campaign launched in April 2021 with board member Myrt Rose making a matching challenge gift of $100,000, which was immediately matched by Rene and Tish Champagne, a fellow board member. The endowment will ensure the continued success of the society’s mission and Marco Island Historical Museum operations. NAPLES CHARITY REGISTER

T GIVING WISELY
Charity Begins at HOME Palm Beach and Collier counties lead the pack in giving, though Florida communities need to engage donors across the wealth strata By Judy Martel American generosity marked an all-time high in 2019, with charitable donations totaling nearly $450 billion, but that impressive statistic doesn’t tell the whole story. In Florida, a different report reveals an uneven philanthropic landscape—one mostly concentrated in two ultra-wealthy counties: Collier and Palm Beach. A study of individual giving from 2011 to 2018 by the Florida Nonprofit Alliance—a statewide coalition designed to strengthen and promote the nonprofit sector—shows that the bulk of individual charitable contributions in 2018 originated in Southeast and Southwest Florida. Essentially, the state’s donor pool has been steadily shrinking from a cross-section of Floridians to a
smaller group of wealthier contributors. “I think it’s fair to expect the wealthy to give more,” says Leah McDermott, Florida Nonprofi Alliance program manager. But disproportionate giving means some communities will benefit while others struggle. Individuals make up

the lion’s share of charitable donors and every contribution, however small, can still make an impact. “The money doesn’t mean less because the amount is less,” she says. “We hope we can inspire all income levels in all regions of the state to give.” Based on IRS data for charitable giving, in 2011, 47 percent of the total donations in the 26
state came from individuals with an adjusted gross income of $200,000 or more. By 2018, 75 percent of contributions came from upperincome donors, although the number of donors declined, says McDermott. What’s more, donors in just four Florida counties—Palm Beach, Miami-Dade, Broward, and Collier—were responsible for 46 percent of all charitable contributions in the state. Two of those counties were notable. From 2016 to 2018, Palm Beach County donations increased by $539,000—27 percent— while Collier County came in second with an increase of $106,000. Philanthropic giving in Florida will continue to fluc uate annually based on various factors, including income security, stock market performance, and community need. “We don’t have 2020 data, but we think the pandemic will show a spike in emergency giving,” McDermott says. “Going forward in 2021 and 2022, there’s a concern that donations will drop.” Florida Nonprofit Alliance Executive Director Sabeen Perwaiz finds hope in the infl x of new residents to Florida. The test in Florida will be finding ways to consistently engage donors across the wealth strata. Since the housing bust recession a decade ago, charitable contributions from those with incomes under $100,000 have been dropping off, says Perwaiz, “and we really do need that to come back.”

STARability Foundation:
STARability Foundation patrons hosted 19 intimate, themed dinners in their homes and tuned into a live broadcast during Dining for the STARs to support programs and awareness for individuals with disabilities. More than 700 people registered for the February 2021 virtual event, which also included a silent auction through an online bidding platform and videos of STARability participants speaking about their life-transforming experiences. It surpassed its goal, netting $1.2 million. John and Carrie Cooney, who have steadfastly supported STARability, hosted a dinner and Stofft Cooney Architects was the event’s title sponsor. “We’re very thankful to the wonderful hosts who dedicated their time and opened their homes for these dinners and decided to try something new along with us,” says STARability CEO Karen Govern. 34

The popular kitchen tours hosted by the Naples Woman’s Club to support local food pantries were reimagined into a threemonth series of small-group, chef-hosted luncheons at 16 restaurants. More than 600 tickets were sold for A Culinary Adventure That Gives Back with 12 to 16 guests randomly assigned to a select restaurant, where they enjoyed a three-course meal and personal interaction with the chefs. Community School of Naples:
Angel Ball
Angel Ball participants hit the 50-yard line like a star Seahawks running back to raise $1 million for the Community School of Naples’ financial aid program. The traditionally glamorous black-tie gala—reimagined with a Florida-casual theme—was coordinated in 60 days. In March 2021, more than 370 guests attended the outdoor gathering held midfield at the new John N. Allen Family Stadium, enjoying beverages from prosecco carts, food truck fare, a student musical performance, and bidding on items including a diamond necklace, Pebble Beach golf trip, and 1972 Corvette Stingray. “As a junior, I made a promise to all of you. I stood onstage and said, ‘I will be the first one in my family to attend college,’” Ashley Cruz, a Harvard freshman who attended the Community School of Naples on a scholarship, told the crowd. “From the bottom of my heart, thank you for helping me fulfil that promise.” 36

Guadalupe Center: Circtacular Red clown noses, jugglers, circus acts, comedians, and augmented reality proved a winning combination for Guadalupe Center’s big-top-themed Circtacular, an interactive virtual event that raised more than $950,000 for education programs in Immokalee. Participants received party kits filled with polka-dot bowties, goodies, and favors, and livestreamed the January 2021 event. The spectacular included testimonials from former students whose lives were transformed by the center’s mission of breaking the cycle of poverty through
education. Guadalupe Center President Dawn Montecalvo channeled her inner vaudevillian when she was “pied” in the face by college-bound Tutor Corps students after donations exceeded the center’s goal. “All year, our rallying cry has been ‘The show must go on,’” says Montecalvo. “Nothing can stop education as long as enough people passionately care about it.”
Holocaust Museum & Cohen Education Center:
Triumph 2021
For Triumph 2021, the museum raised $150,000 by selling viewing tickets to a hybrid live and prerecorded program via Zoom featuring inspirational music, comments by Southwest Florida Holocaust survivors, and a live interview with Holocaust Museum President Susan Suarez and Stephen D. Smith, a leading genocide educator and executive director of the University of Southern California Shoah Foundation. Audience members were treated to the first-ever public demonstration of the Shoah Foundation’s interactive technology—a hologram of a Holocaust survivor answering Smith’s questions. “The museum is so grateful to all our generous sponsors and donors,” Suarez says, noting that Maureen Lerner chaired the event and opened her home for this and other watch parties. Friends of Rookery Bay:
Road Rally In December 2020, more than 225 participants in the inaugural Road Rally for Friends of Rookery Bay motored through 35 miles of Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in support of the organization’s mission to protect Southwest Florida’s coast through research, education, and conservation. Designed to raise awareness and appreciation for the 100,000-acre reserve—as opposed to revenue—the sold-out rally attracted 100 cars. It offered optional activities, quiz show-themed questions at 38
route checkpoints, giveaways, and prizes. It also raised $10,000, initiated adopt-asea-turtle-nest donations, inspired new Friends of Rookery Bay members, and resulted in three commitments for 2022 rally partnerships. “It was a hit,” says Friends Executive Director Athan Barkoukis. “People told us that they never realized how large the reserve is until they drove so much of it during the rally route, which took them to places they had never been.”
Pelican Bay:
Founders Scholarship Fund The Pelican Bay Founders Scholarship Fund raised $300,000 in 2021 for college and technical school scholarships by a grassroot means akin to simply passing the hat: sharing a 5:32-minute video of past recipients’ testimonials, some moved to tears by the generosity of strangers. “Thank you for giving me the opportunity, investing in me, and allowing me to take the steps to change the world like I’m doing now,” Tania Saade, an Amazon executive who received a Founders Scholarship in 2011, says in the video. “I could not have done any of this if it weren’t for you.” The scholarship fund was established in 1991 to support high school graduates in pursuit of post-secondary education. Pelican Bay Founders Scholarship Fund supporters “really stepped up because there was no physical fundraiser,” says marketing consultant Sue Huff. And they weren’t about to scrimp: 32 scholarships worth $12,000 each were granted to Collier County students.

Champions For Learning:
Golden Apple Celebration and Celebration of Champions Instead of singling out a handful of teachers and major supporters for two of its biggest events—the Golden Apple Celebration and Night of Champions—Champions For Learning shared the love. The education foundation adopted a districtwide approach in 2021 to honor donors, educators, mentors, community partners, and frontline personnel who stepped up during the day-to-day uncertainties of the pandemic. The organization retooled the 31-year Golden Apple teacher recognition program to share the impact educators make. In lieu of a formal dinner and individual awards, the Golden Apple Celebration raised $400,000 that was given to schools to celebrate the teachers. Another $225,000 was distributed to support educators’ professional learning, and close to $100,000 was distributed in classroom grants. A $2,000 gift was given to all 58 Collier County public schools for Teacher Appreciation Week. Night of Champions was renamed Celebration of Champions as a virtual experience. “We began our fundraising by reaching out to loyal donors who may have attended our in-person event and connected them through Zoom and phone calls with the students they were impacting,” says Champions For Learning President Susan McManus. The celebration included testimonial videos
034_Events_Feature_2022.indd 39
and an online silent auction, and recognized Champions For Learning student mentor Nancy Potter with the Heart of the Apple award. The event raised $1.3 million for Champions For Learning student programs and more than $250,000 for tuition scholarships. Florida Gulf Coast University was the lead sponsor. “Celebration of Champions became a pivotal experience for many to support in advance and after the program aired,” McManus says.
