On the cover For the fourth year, we asked the community to help us select the cover for the Naples Charity Register. In a robust online contest, local artists submitted their work, and readers voted on their choice. The winning piece, Hearts of Palm, was created by Florida artist Leoma Lovegrove (leoma lovegrove.com), who hails from a family of artists and whose paintings are known for their vibrant tropical colors. “Everything I paint right now is Florida-inspired,” says Lovegrove. “I’m an artist of environment; I paint what’s around me, and my love is Florida.” Hearts of Palm was inspired by a photograph of a palm tree in the artist’s backyard, on which she affixed wooden hearts of her own creation. –Savannah Christensen

I

know we are all ready to move on and not have every conversation start with “How did you fare with the storm?” But there is no way to avoid the elephant in the room when this publication is entirely about philanthropy and the art of giving. Our community and most of our state was ravaged by Irma, but thanks to so many selfless heroes and first responders, we have bounced back in inspirational fashion. Governor Rick Scott, Florida Power & Light, and Publix Supermarkets are impressive standouts to me. With the threat of potentially catastrophic damage to his entire state, Governor Scott continuously updated everyone on evacuation and emergency procedures with the precision of an obviously well-rehearsed and well-orchestrated disaster plan. He conveyed a level of comfort and made me feel “He’s got this!” Florida Power & Light employees are probably still bleary-eyed. While servicing half of Florida, and faced with nearly 15 million people without power statewide, they recruited more than 30,000 people from out of state to assist in this daunting task. Yes, Floridians were inconvenienced with no power for longer than they wanted, and there were some tragic causalities not to be ignored, but the reality of the magnitude of the situation is staggering and the worst the company has ever dealt with. I commend them for their monumental efforts. Publix obviously had done their training, too. With no power and spotty cell service to communicate with employees, they managed to get most of their stores up and running with generators within a couple of days post-storm, providing food and water when we needed it most. Yes, I understand they were all just doing their jobs, but they were doing them while also dealing with their own personal loss situations and were asked to exceed expectations so the rest of us could be comfortable and return to our daily routines. I am not intentionally ignoring the local community humanitarians, but at the time of this letter I have not been “connected” with the local media long enough to know who to recognize, so I didn’t want to miss anyone. I keep reminding myself it’s not what we lost but what we didn’t lose. We need only look at Houston, the Everglades, and Puerto Rico to remind ourselves. A big bright spot for our team at Naples Illustrated is a new name on the masthead as we welcome Anna Bjorlin as our new editor of the Naples Charity Register and associate editor of Naples Illustrated. Anna is a breath of fresh air and I can’t wait for you to meet her, if you have not yet had the pleasure. You will see as you turn the pages of this beautiful issue that she is a talented and wonderful addition. Welcome, Anna!

with a Purpose

Good Time: The Children’s Advocacy Center of Collier County’s Beach Ball Good Deed: Preventing and treating child abuse

The Children’s Advocacy Center of Collier County, which protects, educates, and advocates for abused children, encouraged guests to imagine the world’s most exotic shores for its annual Beach Ball. This year, the Naples Botanical Garden’s Asian Garden set the scene for the Fijianthemed event, which raised awareness and funds for the prevention and treatment of child abuse in Collier County. While the center has held a fundraising gala for the past 21 years, the Beach Ball was first created in 2010, and its casual vibe and fun themes have been a consistent success since its inception. “It’s one of the few galas that’s laid back,” says Bryan Lee, development director. “It’s casual and fun, and there’s no need to dress up. We encourage people to wear their Tommy Bahama clothes.” At the 2017 ball, festivities kicked off with a raffle—several guests won artwork and travel packages, including a trip to New Orleans—and progressed into a live auction for exciting lots like tickets to a Lady Gaga 24

concert. This year, the CACCC also added a special event to top off the evening: Naples City Live, a benefit concert. After enjoying rum punch, Peruvian short ribs, and Fijian-themed desserts, guests headed to the garden’s performance lawn for live music from big names such as The Good Bad Kids and Shane Smith & The Saints. “It was very exciting to create this opportunity for our guests to experience live music as part of our party,” says Lee. While more than 600 people attended the concert, gala attendees received VIP tickets that included reserved seating and an open bar. In the future, Lee hopes to separate the events so guests have two outings to look forward to. Both help promote the mission of the center, which is in the process of expanding its line of advocacy programs and services. These range from a child protection team, which provides forensic interviews and medical examinations, to counseling, parenting education, and a family safety program.

Groovy retro tunes and themed decor made the David Lawrence Center’s Magical Musical Tour–Dancing Through the Decades Gala a rousing success, bringing in $277,000 for children’s programs.

Good Time: Magical Musical Tour– Dancing Through the Decades Gala

Good Deed: Raising funds for local children’s services Naples residents have long celebrated their community and good fortune with music and dance, and this was especially the case at the David Lawrence Center’s annual Magical Musical Tour–Dancing Through the Decades Gala. This year, the center, which serves children and adults struggling with mental health challenges and substance abuse issues, hosted its signature event at the Ritz-Carlton, Naples. More than 300 guests decked out in decade-inspired cocktail attire enjoyed dinner, dancing, and entertainment celebrating American music and culture from the 1960s to present day. “It was a unique and refreshing concept, and the dancing was a big hit,” says Trista Meister, communications director. “We wanted to make the event more celebratory and fun. People get kind of tired of the ball 26

gown thing by the time we’re in the thick of season.” After dinner, music from everyone’s favorite decades filled the venue as guests danced and bid on auction items to benefit the center. Glitzy decor and the 13-piece band, Big Swing and The Ballroom Blasters, completed the retro ambience. “We knew the music was important for this theme, and the band made a big impact,” says Meister. The band will also be back for next year’s gala, “Putting on the Ritz,” to celebrate the center’s fiftieth anniversary. The gala raised $277,000 for its children’s programs, which include inpatient crisis stabilizations, court-related services, and holistic therapies, such as art therapy, equine-facilitated psychotherapy, and pet therapy. The programs help lower children’s anxiety and improve communication skills.

A vintage theme full of the glamour of Old Hollywood was the highlight of the Foundation for the Developmentally Disabled’s Hollywood Swing Through Time Gala. Guests received star treatment and raised funds for the foundation’s new Trailblazer Academy program.

Good Time: The FDD’s Hollywood Swing Through Time Gala

Good Deed: Raising funds for a new outreach program Few stars shine as bright as the members and guests did at the Foundation for the Developmentally Disabled’s Hollywood Swing Through Time Gala at the Naples Beach Hotel and Golf Club. The foundation, which supports and advocates for adults with developmental disabilities such as Down Syndrome, cerebral palsy, and autism, hosts a fundraising event every year to raise awareness and expand its programs. This year’s gala exceeded everyone’s expectations. The vintage Hollywood theme informed the glamorous cocktail hour, dinner, and dancing. A lucky guest won a pair of diamond earrings in the Diamond Drop Raffle, and several bid on lavish prizes, such as a trip to Tuscany or a glass wine cellar, during a live auction. “We had never had a theme like this one before,” says Karen Govern, FDD executive director. “We wanted a wow factor to get people’s attention to raise awareness for 28

our cause, and I got nothing but positive feedback.” The gala kicked off Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and brought in more than 300 guests, netting $233,000 and surpassing the annual average of $150,000. The glamorous decorations featured photos of classic Hollywood celebrities, and guests received star treatment. “The generosity of our guests was really overwhelming,” says Govern. “We consider them our stars and we thought this would feature them that way.” Proceeds raised from the event will go toward funding educational, social, and recreational programs, with an emphasis on a new full-time outreach program called The Trailblazer Academy that helps young adults finish their education and provides vocational training and connections with employers. The success of this year’s gala has fueled next year’s plans: The theme will be “Dancing Under the Stars.”

oward the end of her life, when cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post began to plot a legacy for the palatial, 1920s Palm Beach estate she built and named Mar-a-Lago, she probably never could have predicted the circuitous and complicated route it would take. Initially, Post offered the home to the state of Florida, which refused it due to the high cost of annual maintenance. Undaunted, she convinced the federal government to accept it in 1972—a year before her death—and realize her vision of the mansion as a “winter White House.” But less than a decade later, the government returned the gift to her foundation, again blaming high operating costs. After languishing for a few more years, real estate mogul and eventual United States president Donald Trump snapped it up in 1985 for a fraction of its value. In a strange twist, the mansion has now become an unofficial winter White House—at least for the current president.

Mar-a-Lago, 1967

Forty years on, donating a home to charity is still not a smooth path. But for the wealthy, it can be a smart way to make a sizeable charitable impact without raiding cash or investment portfolios, while potentially reaping a slew of tax benefits at the same time. The key is to have the professionals in place who can navigate through the tax and legal strategies of the various donation methods. Donors have a few options for making a charitable gift of their home: an outright donation

At Home

With careful consideration, gifting a property can ensure its perpetuity and make a big charitable impact By Judy Martel during life; a gift of a remainder interest; an irrevocable trust that removes the home from their taxable estate; or through a will. The legal and tax implications will vary, depending on the choice, according to Grayson McCouch, professor of law at University of Florida. To receive the maximum tax deduction, you'll want to donate the home to an IRS-qualified charity. And the IRS will always require a professional home appraisal.

Do’s and Don’ts of Donating There are tax advantages to donating a home to charity no matter how you choose to do it, but you’ll get more if you give during life rather than bequeathing at death, according to McCouch.“If you give during your life, you’ll get the income tax deduction,” he says. Depending on the type of charity, a donation could mean an immediate deduction of the fair market value of the property, up to 20 percent or 30 percent of your adjusted gross income. Beyond the income tax deduction, there are other tax benefits. If your estate exceeds the federal estate tax exemption ($5.49 million per person in 2017), a charitable donation will remove a major asset from your taxable estate, allowing you to avoid or minimize death taxes. Owners of highly appreciated mansions can avoid the capital gains taxes that would be incurred on a sale, which could be a significant savings if gains exceed the current exclusion of $250,000 per person or $500,000 per couple on primary residences that meet the eligibility requirements. But beware that if the home comes with a mortgage, “it could complicate things and the charity

may not want to accept your gift,” says McCouch. “You might want to get rid of the mortgage before donating the property.”

It’s Complicated With sophisticated strategies, donors can make a future gift and retain the right to live in the home, though they’ll have a reduced upfront tax deduction and are still responsible for the home’s expenses. Another more complex option is a charitable remainder trust: Because the trust is irrevocable, the assets placed in it are removed from the taxable estate. Finally, there is a specific and previously little-used type of charitable donation for real property—conservation and historic preservation easements—that has piqued the interest of the wealthy due to a number of fairly high-profile cases, says McCouch. This strategy helps owners preserve the heritage of the property forever. In fact, the strategy is one Donald Trump employed for Mar-a-Lago, after he turned the property into an exclusive country club. By placing conservation and historic preservation easements on it and then donating the easement to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, he gives up his right to ever develop the property for any other purpose. But these restrictions come with tax benefits that have become more generous over the past decade, McCouch says. “Conservation and historic preservation easements are subject to different sets of restrictions,” says McCouch. “You need professional advice. But if you find a charity that will accept the home, it gives them the right to protect it in perpetuity.”

Dale and Barbara Morrison

Dale and Barbara Morrison moved to Naples in the fall of 2011, and the next year attended the gala for The Immokalee Foundation, which provides programs on education and life skills for local children. They were so impressed with the event that they made the foundation the primary focus of their philanthropic efforts in Naples. “The gala was so different than others we had attended,” says Barbara, who is also actively involved with the Naples Botanical Garden. “We could buy experiences to benefit the youth of Immokalee, and we knew what our money would buy. Also, we were inspired by the young people who got up and spoke.” Dale has helped build an internship program between the foundation and the Intercontinental Group, and was instrumental in securing a grant from Hertz in 2016. This year, Barbara joined the foundation’s board of directors and plans to call upon personal connections with captains of industry to bring in as many new supporters as possible. “There are so many causes to help, but we see the need to give back and help in our own backyard,” she says.

“ MICHAEL CARONCHI

NOT ONLY DID THEY SAVE THEIR LIVES, BUT WE HAVE TWO 6-YEAR-OLDS WHO ARE LIVING HAPPILY BECAUSE OF THEIR HELP.” —Matthew Grabinski

Local couple Matthew and Laura Grabinski know firsthand the importance of this new addition. In 2011, Laura gave birth to premature twins Leo and Lola, who spent 98 days in the NICU at the original Golisano hospital in Lee County. During their experience, Matthew and Laura got to know the hospital’s staff and leaders. Since their twins were discharged, happy and healthy, the Grabinskis have served as advocates for children’s hospitals, and this one in particular. “The only way for these hospitals to get help and donations is through their patients,” says Matthew. “It’s impossible to understand unless you have been through it.” During the capital campaign for the new facility, naming rights were offered to major donors. The Grabinskis took this opportunity to name the NICU staff respite room in honor of their parents, who Matthew says provided extensive emotional support during that difficult time. “I’m passionate about Golisano because of what they did for our children,” says Matthew. “Not only did they save their lives, but we have two 6-year-olds who are living happily because of their help.”

Rosemary and Walter Blankley

Walter and Rosemary Blankley

Full-time residents of Naples and longtime supporters of the Guadalupe Center in Immokalee, Walter and Rosemary Blankley are passionate about education in their community. After his retirement, Walter received a notice from the Guadalupe Center that immediately piqued his interest. Having previously directed a foundation focusing on early childhood education, the couple appreciated the Guadalupe Center’s mission of breaking the cycle of poverty through education. To that end, they donated $25,000 to support the center’s academic programs. Since then, the Blankleys’ relationship with Guadalupe has blossomed, and the two have become close to not only the center’s team, but to its students as well. Their most recent gift to Guadalupe was $1 million to match the funds raised for endowment. The full sum will go toward the center’s college scholarship program. “We both went to college on scholarships,” says Walter, a graduate of Princeton University. “Neither of us would have been able to go to the colleges of our choice without them. All the support we received had an impact on us, and it is appropriate and important for us to pay that back.” Rosemary has been a trustee of her alma mater, Philadelphia’s Arcadia University, for 17 years. Each year, the couple sends three Guadalupe Center seniors to Arcadia with a full ride and all expenses paid. Walter and Barbara also chip in a little extra to fly the seniors’ parents up for parents’ weekend on campus.

The new Golisano Children’s Hospital, the first of its kind in Southwest Florida, opened in Fort Myers in April. The hospital provides family-centered, lifesaving treatment and care in a facility filled with cheerful decor and private rooms.

VOLUNTEERING

Helping

Hands These local organizations offer active volunteer opportunities for every animal lover By Anna Welch

While a generous donation is always appreciated, philanthropy extends beyond the check. Volunteering, for example, is an excellent way to understand a charity’s mission and have a direct impact on the constituents it serves—particularly those who don’t have their own voice. Not sure where to begin? Here are three local organizations offering exciting volunteer experiences for animal lovers.

Forever Friends

From assisting with the adoption process to working directly with the animals or providing foster care for animals not yet ready for adoption, Humane Society Naples (hsnaples.org) offers many opportunities for the community to help the nonprofit. Volunteers at the no-kill shelter may start as young as 12, though individuals must be at least 18 years old before working with the shelter’s dogs. If you or your child is interested in lending a hand, mandatory recruitment orientaVolunteer contact: volunteers@ tions are held on the second Saturday of each month. Applihsnaples.org. Engaging Equestrians

With a team of more than 400 volunteers, Naples Therapeutic Riding Center (naplestherapeuticridingcenter.org) offers something for everyone. Individuals must be at least 14 years old to assist at the center, which offers therapeutic riding and other equine-related programs for local children and adults with special needs. An orientation is hosted each month for new volunteers. After a background screening, volunteers begin with sidewalker training, where they walk next to riders to get familiar with both the organization’s children and horses. Later, they can help with barn work or office work, depending on preference. Missy Saracino, the program director, says many volunteers come to the center because of their love for horses but soon fall in love with the children as well. “Volunteering is therapeutic, not only for the kids and horses, but for the volunteers,” says Saracino. “They get to be around the animals, they’re outside, and they’re doing something to help someone else.” Connie Sharpe, who has been a volunteer at the center for more than 15 years, is now serving her second year as president of the board. She began working as a volunteer to fill her days after retirement. Since she had no interest in golf, mahjong, or bridge, she looked to something she was passionate about: horses and kids. “All the sweat and muscle aches are worth it when I hear a new rider giggle when she first trots with her horse,” says Sharpe. “Parents are so proud of the accomplishments of their children. It’s not just the physicality of riding, but the interactions with volunteers and other riders that help participants meet and exceed goals.”

panthers, and foxes—some of which are up for adoption. Volunteers can take on a number of roles ranging from office jobs and fundraising to assisting with the animals. Following approval and orientation, volunteers are placed with experienced handlers to learn their tasks. Each individual begins at level zero and can advance as high as level five, where they’ll be able to work with potentially aggressive animals. Advancement requires completing a certain number of hours, checklists, and quizzes. In the end, it’s work, time, and energy well-spent, explains Deanna Deppen, president of the organization. “[We’ve had] people whose last wish [was] to come see the animals,” she says. “One woman wanted to hug a wolf, and to be able to give her and her family that memory was a tremendous gift.”

Foodie Fête

A sampling of some of the treats offered at Waterside Shops’ Craving Fashion event

It’s no secret: Naples is a foodie town. We take a look at four charitable events themed around the epicurean experience. By Anna Bjorlin

SIP, SAMPLE, AND SHOP

The perfect opportunity for Naples’ yearround residents to enjoy a night on the town, Craving Fashion began as a way to draw locals to Waterside Shops during the slower summer months. Anna Wintour, editor of Vogue magazine, originally founded a similar concept, Fashion’s Night Out, as an international affair to boost retail sales in September. “She created the event when there was a little slump in retail in 2008,” says Kellie Jacoby, public relations representative for Waterside Shops. Though Wintour’s initiative eventually phased out, Waterside recognized the need to continue honoring full-time residents in Naples. Craving Fashion was born. “We kept the event in September because the social scene is still a little quieter, so the local

36

restaurants have time to participate before they get super busy,” says Jacoby. Over the past five years, Craving Fashion has grown to attract more than 1,500 guests who dress to the nines and engage in retail therapy while enjoying live music and entertainment, sipping cocktails, and sampling food from more than 30 eateries. Though past years also featured fashion shows, going forward the spotlight will be on the culinary offerings. “It’s a food event,” says Jacoby. “People want to come taste the food from their favorite restaurants or sample a new restaurant they haven’t had a chance to try yet.”

Though the 2017 celebration was cancelled due to Hurricane Irma, the shops will not be deterred; Jacoby is already planning next year’s festivities. Previous Craving Fashion beneficiaries have included Make-A-Wish Southern Florida, St. Matthew’s House, and the United Way of Collier County. (watersideshops.com)

Wining and dining for a cause is the foundation of the annual Naples Winter Wine Festival. an entire weekend is dedicated to fine wines and delicious cuisine for guests to indulge in, while supporting the Naples Children & Education Foundation.

FEEDING A NEED

One of the season’s most highly-anticipated events, the Naples Winter Wine Festival is an oenophile’s dream. The signature fundraiser of the Naples Children & Education Foundation, the internationally acclaimed three-day festival has raised more than $161 million for children in need since its inception in 2001. It kicks off with Meet the Kids Day, where guests can interact with the children benefiting from the foundation’s services and taste some fabulous wines at a luncheon following the tour. Next up is a variety of exclusive, elaborately themed vintner dinners hosted in private homes around Naples and prepared by award-winning chefs and celebrated vintners. The live auction on the following day is another highlight of the festival; guests can bid on exceptional wines, exciting international trips, and one-of-a-kind experiences. Each year, funds raised from the festival go toward NCEF’s initiatives and programs, which are designed to improve the educational, emotional, and physical lives of underprivileged and at-risk children in Collier County through grants to local nonprofits. “Children are the key to our future, and

036-feat foodiefete-2018.indd 37

we’re passionate about our work to help support and educate the children in our community who might not have the guidance needed to live a healthier life,” says Valerie Gargiulo, one of the founders of the festival and vice chair of the NCEF grant committee. The 2017 festival raised $15.1 million, which was distributed across five long-term strategic initiatives, the NCEF’s Fund-A-Need endeavor supporting children’s healthcare, and 34 local organizations including the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County, Grace Place for Children and Families, and Immokalee Child Care. The 2018 festival, themed “All We Need is Love,” is set for January 26-28, 2018. Guests

can expect a brand new lineup of nationally and internationally recognized chefs, sommeliers, and vintners, along with exciting lots for both the live and online auctions. According to Gargiulo, this year’s Fund-A-Need will benefit hunger, nutrition, and oral health programming, with an emphasis on prevention and intervention services to help children develop lifelong healthy behaviors. “Good health is vital to every child’s future,” says Susie McCurry, one of the 2018 festival chairs. “If a child isn’t healthy, he or she cannot learn, grow, or succeed. Through the NWWF, we have the opportunity to help fragile and underserved children, and we are humbled by all those who attend the festival and support the foundation.” (napleswinefestival.com) NAPLES CHARITY REGISTER

The 2017 Southwest Florida Wine & Food Festival treated guests to two days of vintner dinners, tastings, and auction opportunities, raising $3.2 million for a variety of local health care initiatives.

A FEAST FOR HEALTH CARE

What began over a decade ago as a local Rotary Club event, the Southwest Florida Wine & Food Festival now draws an enormous crowd. The signature fundraising event of Southwest Florida Children’s Charities, the two-day festival has raised over $18.4 million for its three main beneficiaries: Golisano Children’s Hospital, Florida Gulf Coast University, and Florida SouthWestern State College. The weekend’s festivities kick off with an evening of vintner dinners held at local homes throughout the 38

community. “The dinners are a time for [guests] to meet and get to know each other,” says Holly Boldrin, public relations representative for the festival. “In fact, a lot of them end up going in on [auction] lots together, so it’s really wonderful to see the friendships that develop.” The following day’s grand tasting event brings in local chefs and nationally known chefs and vintners. “We really work with the chefs to make sure there’s a variety of dishes and that we’re meeting dietary restrictions,” says Boldrin. After guests have sampled the epicurean options, they can bid on winefocused trips during the live auction. A cus-

tom six-night yachting adventure along the New England coast and a once-in-a-lifetime cultural and culinary tour of Cuba with a local chef were among the favorite lots offered at the 2017 festival, which raised $3.2 million. Funds benefited pediatric initiatives at the Golisano Children’s Hospital and health care scholarships at FGCU and FSW. “We really focus on full-circle giving by supporting college scholarships that educate students to become the next generation of pediatric healthcare professionals,” says Boldrin. “And with the new hospital, hopefully they’ll stay in our community after graduation.” The 2018 festival will be held the first week in March to create more possibilities for vintner participation. A new after-party event, The Dessert Afterglow, will feature the decadent creations of local chocolatier Norman Love. (swflwinefest.org)

A 10-day African safari auction lot was one of the highlights of the Naples Zoo’s 2017 Zoobilee: Feast with the Beasts soiree, which also featured food and beverages from more than 20 local restaurants and caterers.

CULINARY ADVENTURES

If you prefer to keep your nights out casual and fun, the Naples Zoo’s premier annual fundraising event, Zoobilee: Feast with the Beasts, is known as the wildest party in town. What began as a formal seated dinner at the zoo has evolved with the times to become a safaricasual event where guests can explore the zoo while enjoying live music and sampling culinary delights from local caterers and more than 20 restaurants, including The Bowl, Delicious Raw Juice Bar, Jimmy P’s Charred, and Teatro. “We’ve always hosted some kind of fundraiser, but we wanted it to be a little more fun for people,” says Courtney Jolly, director of marketing and public relations at the zoo. “Now it’s an immersive experience where you get to try a little bit of everything.” Guests are encouraged to dress casually for this adults-only event, which provides an up-close look at the zoo’s enduring beauty—

036-feat foodiefete-2018.indd 39

from leisurely nighttime strolls past the tropical flowers of the historic botanical gardens to encounters with the zoo’s beloved animal family. One of the highlights of the 2017 Zoobilee festivities was the auction of an exotic African safari, a 10-day luxury adventure to East Africa’s Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Mount Kilimanjaro, and more. Proceeds raised from the 2017 event supported the zoo’s facility improvements, environmental education programs, and conservation initiatives for threatened and endangered species. Next year’s event is scheduled for February 9, 2018. Entertainment will include two types of live music: on one side of the zoo, a high-energy band for dancing; on the other, softer music for a quieter, more relaxing atmosphere. Continuing a Tradition of Supporting our Community Harmon-Meek Gallery and the Meek family have proudly supported the community for 54 years giving millions in support of area non-profits. Kristine Meek (left) and Juliana Meek (right) are next generation philanthropists, continuing this long-standing tradition today. In 2012, The two worked with the Southwest Florida Community Foundation to establish a fund dedicated to at-risk youth and children’s art programs in our community. Kristine and Juliana have distributed over $70,000 from this fund. The two also host children’s groups at the gallery, a tradition at the gallery since its founding in 1964. Kristine and Juliana both serve on board of directors for non-profits that are personally meaningful to them and are a active in many civic causes throughout the community. FINAL SCENES

A dazzling, often over-the-top atmosphere is one of the reasons guests anticipate the Naples Winter Wine Festival’s vintner dinners. The sophisticated tablescapes at the Hearts of Gold dinner during this year’s festival elicited gasps of wonder. Hosted by Katrina Lundmark-Kash and Rick Kash with Kathy and Dan Mezzalingua, the dinner was held at the home of Mimi and Doug Traina. A former set designer, Lundmark-Kash interpreted the 2017 theme of “Bright Sunshiny Day” with glittering golden decor. The elaborate tables (right) were draped with sequined tablecloths and textured gold chargers, along with centerpieces featuring yellow and orange roses accented with hanging glass hearts and angel wings. It was the perfect setting to honor patrons of the festival—and a symbol of their own hearts of gold.
