Common Ground
Welcome to a showcase of the top business and community leaders who make Collier County a special place to live
Collier County has such an impressive caliber of local talent and community commitment that it’s always a challenge to winnow the honorees for this annual publication. While this presents a challenge for the staff at Naples Illustrated, the publisher of The Naples 100, it is a true testament to the quantity of people who enhance the quality of life in the greater Naples area for everyone.
We see a genuine investment in the community from all sectors: small, locally owned businesses, corporations, public servants, nonprofits, and through extraordinary philanthropy. All these pieces come together to strengthen the mosaic of the Paradise Coast by tackling challenges head-on and planning for the future.
As the county’s population continues to grow, find out how the generosity of “Community Catalysts” (page 12) shape the greater Naples area.
The individuals honored in The Naples 100 are not only successful in their professions, but they’re also leaders who volunteer their time, money, and expertise. They listen, inspire, and encourage others to overcome assumptions and complacency. The same thing can be said for the duos featured in “Consummate Collaborators” (page 63)—they just do it as a team.
The resourceful, compassionate community leaders in the pages of The Naples 100 share common ground: rolling up their sleeves to strengthen and uplift this special place we call home.

Community Catalysts
Philanthropy is a pillar of well-being and an enhanced quality of life in Collier County
By Phil Borchmann
Naples has long been associated with its affluence—grand manses, luxury cars, refined yachts, and exquisite galas. In fact, Collier County is the second wealthiest county in the state, according to financial tech company firm SmartAsset. And that wealth reaches deep into the community as tens of millions of donated dollars support nonprofits addressing critical issues and needs. It also turns out that Collier County is also the state’s most generous, says another SmartAsset study.
“Our community was built on philanthropy—people giving their time and treasure,” says Collier Community Foundation President and CEO Eileen Connolly-Keesler.

The benevolence takes on many forms, from volunteerism and small-dollar donations to mega-cash gifts that support health-care facilities, the arts, children, and underserved and at-risk populations throughout the county. “Our community thrives on this generosity; without it, essential services and facilities would undoubtedly suffer,” Connolly-Keesler says.

NEAPOLITAN SHOWSTOPPER
The Gulfshore Playhouse’s new Baker Theatre & Education Center campus now greets visitors to downtown Naples arriving from the east. Set on three acres, the 40,243-square-foot theater is a design showpiece with a cascading façade of curvy lines that meld with expansive walls of glass, nestled among lush gardens of native plants and walkways. The inside is no less spectacular, as patrons, performers, and playgoers have experienced since its fall opening.
It’s been a dream years in the making for founder and CEO Kristen Coury, a director and producer who arrived relocated to Naples from New York City in 2004—with chops earned on Broadway and beyond— to start her own theater. Along the way, her vision and success captured the imagination and support of local philanthropists, who ultimately delivered funding for the $72 million project. Among them: Jay and Patty Baker, who is an award-winning Broadway producer.
The c ouple, whose surname appears throughout Collier County on landmark institutions, public spaces, and nonprofits got the show on the road, so to speak, in 2016 when they became principal funders by offering $10 million in matching funds. For good measure, they added another $10 million that was also matched by other donors. And eventually, the price tag was met.
Pat ty and Jay Baker are the true visionaries in this community. They have the ability to hear an idea in its most nascent stage, determine it has real value for the greater good of the community, and not only provide generous support, but also help steward, advocate for, and provide guidance for the project as well,” Coury says.
Other major donors included: Glenda and Rich Struthers, who have named Struthers Hall for events and rental and the 125-seat Struthers Studio Theatre; Sandi and Tom Moran who have named the 350-seat
Moran Mainstage Theatre; and Steve and Jane Akin, who have named the Akin Grand Lobby.
The t heater campus at Goodlette-Frank Road and First Avenue South houses multiple spaces for performing arts and education, as well as social areas and places to eat and drink. The Rooftop Terrace provides an additional outdoor mingling spot. It’s estimated that the campus, which includes a public parking garage, will generate more than $20 million in economic benefits within Naples. “Theater enriches every life its touches,” Sandi Moran, also a successful Broadway producer, has said. “This new cultural center is the most exciting thing to happen in Naples in many years, and we are proud to be a part of it.”

CREATING WORLD-CLASS, SPECIALIZED HEALT H CARE
The 72-year-old Naples Comprehensive Health (NCH) health system’s multiple facilities offer ever-expanding services for the growing community. Within its two campuses, there are other recognizable names of those who have generously enabled NCH to provide more specialized care, propelling it among the top 2 percent of hospitals nationwide as one of “America’s 100 Best Hospitals” for 2024, according to Healthgrades. Philanthropy is responsible for 83 percent of two recent capital expansion projects at NCH, so it’s clear that advancements wouldn’t be possible without community generosity. About two-dozen donors have given NCH single gifts of $5 million or more that also enable endowed chairs, the expansion of clinical trials, and a new cardiology fellowship program.
Two major projects are taking shape today: the $130 million HSS at NCH at the NCH North Hospital and the $265 million R.M. Schulze Family Heart and Stroke Critical Care Institute at the NCH Baker Downtown campus.
HSS AT NCH
NCH and New York-based Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) are set to open a three-story, state-of-the-art orthopedic facility this spring. HSS, founded in 1863, has ranked No. 1 for orthopedics for 15 straight years by U.S. News & World Report and has been recognized as a top-ranked hospital for both orthopedics and rheumatology for more than 30 consecutive years. It also maintains the lowest complication and readmission rates for orthopedics in the U.S. and is among the lowest for infection rates, it says.
The Bakers committed a $20 million challenge grant toward HSS at NCH. “NCH strives to ensure our community has access to world-class treatment, and this collaboration represents a huge step forward, not just with this mission but in advancing the field of orthopedic medicine as a whole,” NCH Board Trustee Jay Baker said at the groundbreaking. “This is an exciting opportunity to expand our reach and combine forces with another giant in the health-care sector to deliver outstanding services to our patients.”
Jointly owned, the facility will offer inpatient and outpatient services, including an ambulatory surgery center, imaging, and rehabilitation, and will include 15 private rooms for overnight stays.
In March 2024, NCH and HSS opened a walk-in orthopedic clinic to begin offering advanced expertise, diagnostic equipment, and specialized treatment options.

R.M. SCHULZE FAMILY HEART AND STROKE CRITICAL CARE INSTITUTE
This five-story building housing the Rooney Heart Institute and Wingard Stroke Institute is scheduled for completion in early 2026.
Seeding for the institute began in 2023 with a $20 million gift from Best Buy founder Richard “Dick” Schulze. Its future became more secure with $20 million contributions each from Frances and Kathleen Rooney and Don and Diana Wingard.
The Rooneys, longtime members of NCH’s Medical Diplomats Council, offered their support after NCH recruited top doctors, including Dr. Robert J. Cubeddu, a worldrenowned cardiologist, as president of the heart institute. The Rooneys’ contribution also enables minimally invasive heart surgeries and other cutting-edge treatments. The Wingard funds are being used to enhance clinical services, make capital improvements, support research, and develop new programs to address the needs of stroke patients and their families.
“NCH is working to ensure everyone in our community can access high-quality care close to home, and philanthropic families like the Wingards, the Rooneys, the Schulzes, and the Bakers are ensuring we can remain an independent, nonprofit, community-responsive healthcare system focused on our neighbors,” says NCH Chief Impact Officer Mara Hammond.

The h ighly advanced heart and stroke treatment facilities are critical in Collier County—where more than a third of residents are over 65—and having them in one location is designed to improve medical outcomes. NCH is a Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center that cares for more than 800 stroke patients each year.
“Given the cost of care increases due to inflation, decreased insurance reimbursement, and other challenges, philanthropy is the only solution to sustaining and expanding a nonprofit health system,” Hammond says.

ENCORE! ENCORE!
The local performing arts scene continues to flourish with a recent $22 million renovation and expansion of the home of The Naples Players, the Sugden Community Theatre on Fifth Avenue South. The transformation was made possible by a who’s who of local generous supporters.
Now in its seventy-first season, The Naples Players has much to celebrate. “Most projects are funded with major government grants. At The Naples Players, our amazing facility has been funded entirely from local donors,” says Naples Players CEO/Executive Artistic Director Bryce Alexander. “It is a prime example of the extraordinary generosity that is so unique to Naples."
Aft er four years of fundraising, the cultural gem was unveiled in two phases in 2024. The new Kizzie Theatre has 451 seats and features a balcony, hearing-assistance technology, and a sensory booth where the temperature, volume, and brightness can be independently controlled by theatergoers who have sensory-processing disorders. The main stage was named by the lead funders: the Bakers.
Two black-box spaces—the Tanya and Denny Glass Educational Theatre and the Price Studio Theatre, named for donor Henry Price—each have 105 seats for various programs and productions, including the popular KidzAct. And there is the 50-seat Brallahan Theater. The facility also offers a costume and set-design shops, dressing rooms, an usher’s lounge, café, and bar. Plus, it’s the only LEED-certified, energy-efficient theater in Florida, Alexander says.
The recent renewal reinforces the value that The Naples Players has provided to the community since 1953.
The current location, for example, was made possible with the community’s financial support. The Sugden Community Theatre opened in 1998, debt-free, thanks to residents like Frances Pew Hayes, Peg and Herb Sugden, Lois and Dick Blackburn, and, of course, the Bakers.
Other major donors for the recent theater renovation included Steven and Shelley Einhorn, David B. and Vicki C. Smith, and David and Jerrilyn Hoffmann, among many others. “We are so fortunate to have so many amazing donors,” Alexander says.

GROWING FUTURE RESILIENCY
In January 2024, the Naples Botanical Garden debuted the Evenstad Horticultural Campus, a $15.5 million, state-of-the-art facility that is facilitating the garden’s “development of nature-based environmental solutions.” It also is enabling the garden to “expand its collections of tropical and subtropical plants and enhance its 170 acres of cultivated gardens and native habitat,” according to the organization. It is named in honor of former board member Grace Evenstad and her late husband, Ken, longtime benefactors and lead donors for the project.
Custom-designed for the garden, the horticulture facility “boasts more than 60,000 square feet of growing space, including three greenhouses, a one-acre sun nursery, and a laboratory suite for propagation, tissue culture, and other processes requiring sterile conditions,” according to the organization. Now, Naples Botanical Garden “will rely less on commercially produced plants and grow more from seeds or cuttings, allowing horticulturists to control growing conditions and root development. It will allow us to accept more rare plants from collectors, facilitate sharing with other botanical gardens, and procure specimens long on our wish list.”
Among other conservation projects at the horticulture facility, native beach dune plants are being propagated to establish healthy dune systems on Collier County beaches to build coastal resilience against storm surge.

THOMAS “TOM” GOLISANO ANNOUNCES $85 MILLION IN GRANTS
GIVING FROM THE HEART
When philanthropist and Paychex founder Thomas “Tom” Golisano called together a group of nonprofit leaders in November, they weren’t aware that he would be awarding $85 million in unrestricted funds to 41 organizations, mostly in Florida.
A seasonal Naples resident, he is already the force behind the Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples (CMON) as well as the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. On that November day, he provided additional financial support of $4 million to CMON and $10 million to the children’s hospital.
The G olisano Foundation gifts—ranging from $150,000 to $10 million—will be paid over four to five years. Most importantly, they are unrestricted funds, which means they can be used at each organization’s discretion: to expand programming; invest against a future economic downturn; hire staff; or pay for capital improvements.
CMON Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Foerster was overcome with surprise and gratitude when he was presented with the out-of-the-blue funding. “Unrestricted funds allow organizations to work on areas of need first without having to be focused on any specific program or project. It’s really rare to get a gift of this size that isn’t earmarked for a specific purpose,” he says. “This gift will allow us to look toward the future and see where CMON can grow from here. This is a tremendous lift to CMON.”
The STARability Foundation is a Naples organization that provides vocational, recreational, educational, and social programs for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It has acquired five-acres with a 42,000-square-foot, two-story building at the former Hodges University campus to establish a permanent center to serve more than 360 annual participants. It received $5 million from Golisano, who said, “This center, and STARability’s expansion of programs, will transform the lives of countless individuals for years to come.”
In ma king his gifts, Golisano told the audience, “One of my favorite sayings is, ‘The only wealth you keep is that which you give away’ and this year I’ve decided to act on that saying.”
Foerster notes that “the magnitude of the generosity paired with the diversity of organizations, from hospitals to community organizations to animal welfare and more, will make a huge difference in the lives of people in our community, not just in the near term but for generations to come.”
Below is a list of the Collier County-based nonprofits and organizations that got an early holiday gift—transformative funding—from Golisano.

Mike and Kelly Mahigel share a passionate livelihood as design afficionados. While living in Minnesota, where they bought, refurbished, and sold houses, they amassed a unique assortment of furnishings and objects characterized by artistic expression and limited production. Eventually they were able to turn their interest into a flourishing resale business. In 2023, the couple decided to make a full-time move south. They brought along their carefully curated collectible designs and in November 2023, opened the PDA Gallery in the Naples Design District to showcase the much-loved avant-garde and vintage items. Mike and Kelly continue to travel the world looking for treasures, networking with dealers, buying and selling pieces, and sharing their collection with fellow Neapolitans.
What is the secret to working together?
“Before starting PDA we flipped several properties together. We learned how that it is most important to recognize and respect each other’s talents and shortcomings, both physically and intellectually. Delegating work based on those natural strengths and weaknesses has saved us many headaches over the years. When the workload is unbalanced, one of us will take care of the family’s day-to-day needs while the other focuses on business needs. If we both have a talent deficit on a specific item that needs attention, we bring in help.” —Mike Mahigel
Do you have tips for when conflicts arise?
“First, communicate with love and respect. Acknowledging your partner’s perspective might be better in the end. A compromise might just be better than anything. Second, delegate based on strengths. Because of the way we delegate our workload, most conflicts are related to time constraints and family commitments. There is only so much time in the day and so many things beyond our control. Whatever happens, it’s most important to remember we are partners in life before we are partners in business. Family comes first.” —Kelly Mahigel
