Wild at heart

© LILA PHOTO

I

f there’s one positive I hope many of us have taken from this mad year of mandates and lockdowns, it’s this: a reconnection with nature. I have to say, quarantining hasn’t really been much of a bummer for me. That’s because I love being in the one place we have been “allowed” to be, safely, throughout this whole thing—and that’s the great outdoors. A paddle out on the river, a swim in the ocean, a bike ride at Riverbend Park, a simple walk with the dog...All of it up for grabs, as long as we did it solo (or with not more than a handful of others). Of course, being in Florida has helped too; cold-climate denizens up north likely have felt a lot more “trapped” than we have. But here? Nature is ours for the taking, even in winter. A few weeks ago, I fed a bear. He ate an apple piece out of the palm of my hand. A big, wondrous, kindhearted black bear. I actually still can’t believe it happened, an intimate brush with the wild that I will not soon forget. This was at Busch Wildlife Sanctuary, where we were shooting animal portraits to accompany their rescue stories on page 36. If you haven’t been there in a while, I suggest stopping by and paying these creatures a visit. Just being around their energy is a wonderful reminder that there is life way beyond Covid and catastrophe. The world is wild and beautiful and so much bigger than us. One of our neighbors who certainly values the “call of the wild” is Jupiter Farms resident Jason Gluck. After years spent living a successful but hectic life in the music industry (he worked with Miley Cyrus, among other big names), he decided to get back to the serenity of nature. He purchased a 15-acre ranch and began taking in rescue animals—kangaroos, monkeys, goats, and more—a total of 26 animals living with him on his property today. Read his story and meet some of his roommates on page 58. You’ll find much of the content on these pages is dedicated to honoring nature and the great outdoors. From a guide to local camping (page 46) to art that enhances our natural landscapes while also solving environmental issues (page 26), there is lots to inspire you to get back to nature. And because we all know I love my literary quotes, I’ll leave you with this gem by poet Lord Byron: “There is a pleasure in the pathless woods. There is a rapture on the lonely shore. There is society, where none intrudes. By the deep Sea, and music in its roar: I love not Man the less, but Nature more” (from Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage, 1812). Peace and blessings,

Nature is our greatest teacher

CHASIN A DREAM PHOTOGRAPHY

W

ho can deny that most people choose to live in South Florida because of the gorgeous weather and plethora of outdoor activities available year-round? The allure of natural attractions such as beautiful beaches, the Atlantic Ocean, the Intracoastal Waterway, parks, biking and hiking trails, rivers, and lakes attracts visitors and newcomers like moths to a flame (the lack of state income taxes doesn’t hurt either). This past year especially, we have relied on the great outdoors for our entertainment, our exercise, our fellowship, and our sanity. One of my new pandemic pastimes is pickleball. It has kept my after-hours schedule full—when typically it would have been filled with things like social gatherings, fêtes, and charity events—and it has reignited my love of racquet sports. A stepsister to tennis, pickleball is played on a smaller court with a paddle instead of a racket. It was actually started in the 1960s by a father who wanted his young children to be able to play tennis, and now it is the fastestgrowing sport in America. It’s less taxing on your body since the court is smaller, but it’s not beneath your athletic pay grade—you still get a great workout, and it’s challenging enough to keep you coming back for more (so you don’t get pickled!). It’s not your Grandma’s game anymore. Everyone from young children to 30- and 40- year-olds, as well as older adults, is embracing the sport, and public courts and country club communities have retrofitted their tennis courts to meet the demand. Get outdoors and give it a try! Lions, tigers, and bears, oh my! Lots of animals also call South Florida home, and we are fortunate enough to have a top-notch wildlife sanctuary right in our backyard. Busch Wildlife Sanctuary has a twofold mission of wildlife rehabilitation and environmental education. They focus on rescuing, rehabilitating, releasing, and educating. Not your average “zoo,” the sanctuary creates a unique refuge and habitat for all kinds of animals, from the bald eagle to the Florida panther. To save even more wildlife and expand their environmental education programs, they have embarked on a capital campaign to fund the building of a new facility in Jupiter Farms, west of Interstate 95 on Indiantown Road. Learn how you can help and get an up-closeand-personal tour of the sanctuary in this issue. Nature is our greatest teacher. It awakens the spirit; increases gratitude, inner peace, and joy; and grounds us to what’s essential and important in life. I encourage you to get out of your house and get into nature. As John Muir said: “In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.”

he world’s best PGA Tour players will convene at PGA National Resort & Spa March 15-21 for the annual Honda Classic. Known as a premier event in the Palm Beaches, the golf spectacle will look a bit different this year to ensure a safe fan and player experience. A reimagined Bear Trap at the seventeenth hole, which typically winds around the sixteenth green and seventeenth hole tee box, will feature three separate socially distanced blocks of two- and four-seat sections. On Sunday, spectators can join at the eighteenth hole when the champion is crowned. Last year’s winner was 22-year-old South

Korean Sungjae Im, who won by one shot over Canadian Mackenzie Hughes. Im will return this year, joined by local favorites including Rickie Fowler, Daniel Berger, and Brooks Koepka. This year’s purse is set for $7.2 million, with the winner’s share being $1.2 million. As always, host organization Children’s Healthcare Charity will contribute net proceeds from the tournament to numerous South Florida nonprofits, including Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation. A Hobe Sound resident has created a skin care line rooted in plant therapy

TARA INC PHOTOGRAPHY

M

aster alchemist and skin care expert Kristin Bauer worked in the plastic surgery industry for 12 years before deciding to shift her practice to organic/holistic philosophy. She was struggling with some personal medical issues at the time and had delved into healing work to help combat them. She eventually got in touch with indigenous healers in Peru, who she says helped “cure” her infertility issues. “When I got pregnant in 2010, I had a big wake-up call in regard to how to give my baby the healthiest start in life,” says the Hobe Sound resident. She purged her home of products with harmful chemicals. “At the same time, I went to work on my clients and realized that I didn't want to use chemical peels and synthetic products on them either.” Recalling the high nutrition, vitality, and power she had witnessed in the jungles of Peru, she questioned why the same powerful plant therapy couldn’t work for skin care. She launched a holistic anti-aging line before releasing Nourishe Organics in 2015, with formulas based on what she likes to call “indigenous herbalism” techniques that are rooted in old practices of medicine. Her apothecary features no fillers, water, additives, or preservatives and uses more than 350 organic plants including rose

(anti-inflammatory), reishi mushroom (anti-aging), sea buckthorn (source of omega-7 fatty acid), and helichrysum (collagen and elastin). “Taking the time to love and nurture your skin instead of going for the quick fix is a journey that supports our long-term health and vitality,” says Bauer. Products in the line include Shungite & Diamond soap, which protects from environmental stressors and removes dead skin cells; Azurine Dream Serum, which helps improve hyperpigmentation and brown spots; and Voluminishe, a balm for deep hydration, collagen building, and skin tone enhancement. nourisheorganics.com Nourishe Organics Voluminishe Collagen Support Balm, $67, nourisheorganics.com

NATURE ROCKS Named for its rocky Anastasia limestone shoreline, Blowing Rocks Preserve is a peaceful 73-acre barrier island sanctuary protected by The Nature Conservancy. The winter season brings rough seas and larger waves that create the “blowing” actions that beckon visitors near and far. The best time to view the mystic scene is at high tide.

Agents of CHANGE A JUPITER COUPLE’S FOUNDATION SEEKS OUT A SUSTAINABLE PLANET FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

P

rotecting the planet is what drives Jupiter residents David Vogel and Thais Lopez Vogel. The couple launched the VoLo Foundation in 2014 to find a solution to Earth’s ever-growing climate issue. David, a data scientist with international recognition for predictive modeling accuracy, and Thais, a former attorney from Venezuela, work together to ensure future generations have a safe place to live. Aside from hurricane threats, the Vogels say they have been following Florida’s water quality and the effects of red tide and toxic blue-green algae, all contributing to a higher rate of respiratory issues. They cite that “one out of 10 kids suffer from respiratory disease in Florida due to air pollution.” Thais, a mother of six, says, “The future of my kids is very important to me, and the quality of life for future generations is what we want to preserve.” So far, VoLo has supported 93 projects and counting worldwide. For instance, they partnered with the World Wildlife Fund in 2016 to protect 40 million acres of forestland in Colombia. Locally, they work with the Cleo Institute in Miami and the Environmental Defense Fund to tackle growing

concerns. “We’re 70 percent climatefocused, but the other 30 percent is about building schools in Nicaragua and focusing on education and health,” says Thais. This year, they are hosting a South Florida iteration of Florida Climate Week, April 19-24, inspired by the annual event in New York. The event will promote conversation and raise awareness. “We’re positive about climate change because we know we have the technology and science behind it to solve the problem,” says Thais. volofoundation.org

GET GLOWING SKIN

A double laser treatment that packs a lot of punch For skin that is appearing a little dull or showing signs of long-term exposure to the sun, there is a treatment option that has been gaining a lot of traction on the beauty scene: Sciton Laser Halo. Put simply, it uses a laser that simultaneously targets several layers of skin on the face and body and improves its surface while stimulating collagen, according to Christina Hobgood Naugle, medical spa clinical director at the new Lickstein Plastic Surgery office in Palm Beach Gardens, which offers

the treatment. “The skin is essentially receiving two laser treatments in one,” she says of the innovative technology. “There is nothing like it on the market today. It creates a beautiful glow by treating pores, skin texturing, pigment, and fine lines.” The procedure begins with a topical numbing lotion, followed by a 20- to 30-minute session. Naugle notes that there is minimal pain, little recovery time, and patients typically need just one treatment a year. licksteinplasticsurgery.com

or Te’Von Coney, giving back to others has been a way of life since he was a child. Growing up, his father, Tim, owned a nonprofit called Kids of Tomorrow, which distributed toys to children whose parents couldn’t afford them. “I volunteered for my dad as a young boy, handing out toys to kids at school,” says Coney, 23, who was raised in Palm Beach Gardens and now lives in North Palm Beach. “Giving is in my blood.” After graduating from high school, Coney attended the University of Notre

Dame, where he was a star linebacker and studied philosophy and business economics. In 2019, his football dreams came true when he made it onto the Oakland Raiders’ roster as an undrafted free agent. Sadly, he was released from the team just four months later. It was a blow in more ways than one. Losing the Raiders slot also meant he no longer had the hefty NFL income to support his other dream: to start his own nonprofit. He’d had this idea to launch a foundation called Tough Choices to educate, inspire, and mentor young people in local communities. “I wanted to give back the way my dad taught me growing up,” he says. “I wanted to use my life experiences and mistakes to help others avoid making them and go in the right direction early on.” Despite the setback, he was determined to find success, both on and off the field. “From August through early December 2019, I worked very hard to improve my game,” says Coney. “And I was redrafted by the Raiders on December 11.” A month later, he was finally able to launch Tough Choices. The foundation’s mission is to help kids lead better and more productive lives, to shoot for their dreams and stay away from drugs and gangs. It’s an outreach program where Coney speaks

to kids, answering their questions and motivating them with his own life story. He also sells apparel online to help the foundation prosper. “[These kids] have big dreams and want to know how to fulfill them,” says Coney. “I love to offer help and guidance.” When football season ended, he spent the off-season in Palm Beach County, working out to improve his linebacker skills—and helping others. That February, he began a partnership with the United Way of Palm Beach County to “learn how to run a nonprofit and also engage with people to keep up with everything I needed to know,” Coney says. He traveled to Washington, D.C. to visit the United Way Worldwide. He attended a pizza party at Florida Atlantic University and spoke to students about college experiences. He traveled to churches in the county to distribute food and clothing to the homeless. He visited elementary schools to hand out cereal and canned goods. And he went into classrooms to conduct student surveys so he could learn what they hoped to achieve in life. “I want them to be the best they can,” he says. “They need to find out what they are good at and go for it.” Unfortunately, the [now Las Vegas] Raiders released Coney again last May. But he’s still optimistic about football. He continues to train and also loves to swim, go bowling, hit the beach, and hang out with his family and friends. He is focused on being a well-rounded person so he can do the most good for himself and for others. Says Coney: “I continue to dream big, and it’s my goal to make everyone’s dreams come true.” toughchoicesfoundation.com ❖

Are you relocating to a new state? Changing your residence to a different state has many financial implications. To avoid tax and other consequences, be sure you understand the steps you need to take before moving. Among their diverse services, The Rizzo, Apple, Schneider, and Langbert Group at J.P. Morgan Wealth Management—Wealth Partners Anthony Rizzo, Roy Apple, Jeremy Schneider, and Brett Langbert—can work with you to help minimize the risks and disruptions of an upcoming move. CHANGING YOUR STATE OF RESIDENCE?

You have to leave, really leave. Many states that rely on levying state income taxes to generate revenue are active in challenging claims by former residents that they have moved out of state and changed their tax domiciles. “In order for your move to be respected, you really have to move—half measures may leave you open to claims by your former home state that it should still be able to tax you,” says Anthony Rizzo.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO LEAVE?

Changing residence is a legal matter, so follow the guidance of your independent legal and tax advisors before doing anything. There are many actions you can take to fulfill the requirements of a move, so you’ll want to make a checklist to keep organized and stay on track.

WHERE TO START?

“A good place to start is by changing your driver’s license to your new state and canceling your old license,” says Jeremy Schneider. “Register your car in your new state and notify your insurance company of the change. Similarly, change your voter registration.”

Are you affiliated with a religious institution? Move your religious affiliation to a local house of worship. Do you plan to buy a home, or will you be renting? If possible, sell your home in your old state. If you need to keep your home, transfer title to family members or other entities; if you’re planning to rent in your new state, ask for a long-term lease.

KEEP YOUR MOST VALUABLE DOCUMENTS UP-TO-DATE.

“Remember to revise your estate planning documents (wills, trusts, powers of attorney, advance care directives, etc.) to reflect your new state’s forms,” advises Roy Apple. This is an essential part of keeping your tax domicile current.

FOCUS YOUR ECONOMIC, SOCIAL, AND FINANCIAL ACTIVITIES IN YOUR NEW STATE.

Move your bank accounts and safe deposit box to your new state and close bank accounts in your former state. Engage local medical professionals and send your medical records to them. Change your address with the IRS—list your new address on your tax returns. Notify your credit card companies and financial

institutions of your new address. In general, focus your everyday activities in your new state.

PAY ATTENTION TO TIMING.

Maintain a calendar to remind yourself to stay outside your former state for more than 182 days in each calendar year. Keep receipts that prove local activity in your new state. Remember, you generally don’t have to be in your new state for more than 182 days, just outside your former state. Brett Langbert advises, “The less time you spend in your former state, the less likely your old state will initiate a ‘residency audit,’ requiring you to prove where you spend the most time.”

LEARN FROM EXPERIENCE.

Work with the right advisor to help protect your assets. The Rizzo, Apple, Schneider, and Langbert Group at J.P. Morgan has over 100 years of collective experience helping clients of significant wealth integrate their personal goals with their financial objectives. he may not have realized it at the time, but Palm Beach Gardens resident Lucy Keshavarz was offered her first paying ecological art gig at age 12. “I was making fossil impressions out of clay in my junior high school art class, and the librarian saw them and said, ‘I’m hosting a luncheon and would love to give these to my guests,’” Keshavarz recalls. “She said she’d be happy to pay me a dollar apiece for 24 of them. For a 12-year-old, that was a big deal.” The project would later become the basis for the artist’s Native Impressions series, which she now creates using Florida native plants. The lifelong Florida resident took her earliest passions—science, environmental

elements, and art—and ran with them. In 1999, she founded the Art and Culture Group (artculturegroup.com) to bridge the gap between the arts and the needs of local communities. More recently, she began focusing on incorporating those elements into several eco-art projects spanning Palm Beach and Martin counties. The purpose of these projects, says Keshavarz, is threefold: to bring more native foliage and wildlife to local communities, to give people a public space where they can enjoy nature, and to solve one or more issues related to the current landscape. “When you’re working in the public realm, it needs to be about the public and

about using your talent to solve problems,” Keshavarz says of her projects, which she completes over several years with the help of landscape architects, engineers, developers, city officials, scientists, and community members. One of her more recently completed eco-art projects, Babbling Brook, transformed a dry detention area in West Palm Beach’s Westgate community by using recycled materials to pump water from a retention lake into a waterfall and brook both to improve water quality and to attract migrating birds. Since its completion in 2013, the project has received Urban Oasis Designation from Audubon Florida and a Distinguished Engineering Project Achievement Award from the Engineers’ Council. “It’s an artistled process, but it’s not about me and my work in the studio,” Keshavarz says

of the interwoven aspects of each eco-project, compared to her other public art pieces. “It’s art, it’s science, it’s problem-solving, and it’s community. It’s very integrated.” Keshavarz is letting the community members of Old Palm City lead her current eco-art project, Ripple…as a Drop of Water Becomes a River, which began in 2014. The project spans four restoration areas along the St. Lucie River and will reconnect Old Palm City to its natural roots, create an urban oasis for native plants and wildlife, and treat runoff and improve water quality for the surrounding area. “Hold the water and clean the water— that’s the whole purpose of stormwater treatment areas,” says Keshavarz. “But how can we do that in such a way that’s beautiful and meaningful to the community?” After securing grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Martin County Office of Community Development, the Arts Council of Martin County, community members, and the design team began collaborating on an artistic vision for the 20-acre space.

“Ripple is a dream for an artist like me because it deals with community engagement, cleaning water, and restoring native plant ecosystems, as well as an end product that continues to educate and easily connect people to the natural environment,” Keshavarz says of the project, which is expected to be completed in the fall. In the meantime, community members are encouraged to participate in self-guided or scheduled “sensory” tours of the stormwater treatment area. Keshavarz also plans to lead a workshop for locals to create their own Native Impressions, which will be incorporated into the space’s final design elements. “I’m not asking [community members], ‘Would you like a tree here?’” she says. “I’m asking them, ‘What’s meaningful to you? How do you want this place to feel?’ And when you ask those questions, there’s no right or wrong answer. It puts everyone on a neutral level, and there’s a pure exchange of ideas. For art in public places, that’s what you want.” If you’d like to learn more about the Ripple project or schedule a tour, visit martin.fl.us/old-palm-city-communityredevelopment-area. ❖

Beautiful Beasts PORTRAITS AND STORIES OF SOME OF THE INCREDIBLE ANIMALS WHO RESIDE AT BUSCH WILDLIFE SANCTUARY By Michelle Lee Ribeiro | Photography by Mark Cook

HANNIBAL THE BALD EAGLE In 2015, a volunteer for Audubon EagleWatch had been monitoring a nest in Okeechobee County and came across an injured eagle. The eagle arrived at Busch Wildlife Sanctuary, and the medical team found he was covered in scabs and had damage to his eyes, with a huge growth under one of them. After testing, they discovered he had cancer (squamous cell carcinoma). He was just 6 weeks old. Doctors removed the growth and, thankfully, the cancer has not returned. Hannibal ended up losing the eye as a result of the damage, but he is otherwise healthy and happy and living in the sanctuary’s avian ambassador mew house.

TAHMAHLAH THE MOUNTAIN LION In 2015, after a series of wildfires in California, some people were out looking for dogs left behind when they came upon Tahmahlah. They notified wildlife officials, who took him to a hospital in California where it was determined his eyes and paws were too damaged and he could no longer live in the wild. His paws were so severely burned in the fires, he lost feeling in them. The word went out to find a new, safe home for Tahmahlah, and Busch took him in. He is around 5 years old, weighs about 122 pounds, and feasts on meat, chicken, fish, and even rats. His habitat—which includes an indoor sleeping and eating area and an outdoor yard—is situated next to Makaya the Florida panther.

FREDDY THE ALLIGATOR Freddy came to Busch not long after it opened, back in the Eighties. A young boy had been out fishing with his dad in Miami when he wandered off and found an egg. Without telling his father, he took it home and hatched it—prematurely. He was excited to have a new baby “lizard” pet, which he kept in a shoebox under his bed. The following week, when the boy was at school, his mom was in his room cleaning when she found the baby alligator. Since the gator was underdeveloped and had spent no time with its mother to learn the ropes of being a gator, Busch deemed her unreleasable and moved her into a permanent habitat at the sanctuary, where she is now an education ambassador and fills her belly with everything from fish to chicken to rats.

MO THE BARRED OWL In August 2020, a woman named Monique, who works for Harmony Animal Hospital, encountered an injured owl in Martin County that had clearly been hit by a car. She brought him to Busch, where doctors ended up having to remove his left eye because of the trauma. With only one eye, Mo can no longer successfully hunt in the wild, so he remains at the sanctuary, where he is an education ambassador and lives in the avian ambassador mew house. Barred owls get their name from the striped feather patterns found on their chests. Mo was named after his rescuer, Monique.

BUCKSHOT THE CRESTED CARACARA Buckshot arrived at Busch in November 2018, after his rescuer found him in Martin County. He had been illegally shot with a BB gun, and the pellets shattered his wrist. Now an education ambassador, he resides in the avian ambassador mew with the others. Known as the “Mexican eagle,” caracaras are actually part of the falcon family and are scavengers.

Wild at Heart Visitors to the sanctuary come to admire all the animals strutting around their enclosures. But few ever see what’s going on behind the scenes, particularly in the on-site hospital. The mission of the organization is to rehabilitate injured wildlife and release recovered patients back into their natural habitats—which they did hundreds of times last year alone. Only when an animal cannot recover enough to survive in the wild does it become a permanent resident of the sanctuary, where it may become an “animal ambassador” serving in Busch’s many educational programs. The hospital comprises full-time doctors, seasonal nursery keepers, and volunteers, who treat every animal that is brought through the door. Last year alone, the hospital treated nearly 6,000 animal injuries, most of which were directly related to man-made causes like being hit by a car, illegally shot, or kept as personal pets. Screech owlets found themselves orphaned when their “home tree” was cut down by landscapers. A snapping turtle was hit by a car— carrying 23 eggs. Opossum babies came in, orphaned after their mom was strangled by a soda can ring. There are countless sad stories. The most common species people brought into the hospital last year were opossum and Eastern cottontail rabbits, but the staff treated all kinds of mammals, reptiles, birds, and amphibians. If you find a sick or injured animal, please call the hospital’s emergency line for assistance: 561.575.3399.

SCAR THE RAT SNAKE Scar was found in Jupiter in 2015, all tangled up in a soccer net. The netting was wound so tightly around his body, he ended up with permanent scarring (thus the name). At Busch, he lives in the sanctuary’s serpentarium, which houses about 12 various species of snakes, each in its own space. Rat snakes are nonvenomous and often kept as pets. Farmers gave them the nickname “corn snake” because of the checkered pattern on their belly that resembles an ear of corn.

EARL THE FLYING SQUIRREL Little Earl, for reasons unknown, was kept as a pet by an elderly woman for years. When the woman ended up moving into a nursing home, Earl was on his own and arrived at Busch. The staff noticed he was happiest around people when he was in the hospital, so that is where he lives full-time at the sanctuary today. He’s tiny—about the size of the palm of your hand— and très adorable! Flying squirrels sort of “glide” from tree to tree with a parachute-like membrane (called a “patagia”) and snack on fungi, nuts, berries, seeds, and even small birds.

MAKAYA THE FLORIDA PANTHER Before moving to the sanctuary, Makaya spent her life being trotted around Ohio by humans who sold photo ops with the then cub. In 2009, someone was attempting to illegally smuggle her into Florida to sell her on the black market, but authorities discovered and confiscated her at Palm Beach International Airport. Eleven-year-old, 88-pound Makaya now lives at Busch full-time, in a habitat right next door to Tahmahlah the mountain lion. Like Tahmahlah, she also eats meat and fish, though she is allergic to chicken! Recognized as the official state animal of Florida, the panther is one of the most endangered mammals on Earth, with only about 120 to 130 estimated to be left in the wild.

TEHYA THE BLACK BEAR Tehya shares a habitat at Busch with her sister, Kiona—two cuties with a very unfortunate backstory. In 2008, their mom was repeatedly making her way into urban neighborhoods in Apopka, prompting the State to label her a safety risk and, sadly, euthanize the poor mama bear. Tehya and Kiona were cubs at the time, and the State worried they too would become a threat to humans, having learned habits from their mom. They did not want the cubs to remain in the wild, but luckily local organizations came to the rescue. Palm Beach Zoo took them in temporarily while Busch began building a permanent habitat for the sisters. In 2010, they moved into their new digs, which include an indoor facility with two bedrooms and a kitchen, plus a 2,500-square-foot day yard with a pool and basking platforms (which is where you’ll usually find them!). NUBS THE WHITE-TAILED DEER It’s close to impossible to get anywhere near a deer in the woods—they typically run from humans. Not the case with Nubs! He’s gentle, caring, and friendly with people because he was actually kept as a pet (in a garage) as a baby. The staff at Busch says this often happens when someone finds a fawn sleeping under ground cover or a bush, assumes its mom has abandoned it, and takes it home. The reality is, a mother doe hides her babies under camouflage during the day to keep them safe while she goes off to forage. Fortunately, a neighbor who spied Nubs in the garage called the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and officers confiscated the deer. Nubs now lives at the sanctuary with his deer pals, Daffodil and Moose.

On the Move For the first time in its nearly 40-year history in the area, Busch Wildlife Sanctuary is getting ready to hit the road. The organization has purchased new land in Jupiter Farms, on the southwest corner of Rocky Pines and Indiantown Road, where it will build out a brand new campus for its resident animals, education center, hospital, and more. “As we see between an 8- to 10-percent increase in animal patients every year, we realize we must expand,” says Executive Director Amy Kight. “The sanctuary is currently built on about 6 acres, and our new site is just over 19 acres, allowing us to triple our size.” For years, Busch has been leasing its current property from the Loxahatchee River District, but that agreement is set to expire. Kight says the goal is to have the new facility completed and move-in ready by March 2022: “Our build will feature larger habitats for our permanent animal ambassadors, as well as more space and enclosures to prepare our wildlife patients for a successful reintroduction to their natural ecosystems.” Busch is launching a capital campaign to help raise funding for the build—a $13 million project. You can learn more about the plans and donate to the campaign by visiting buschwildlife.org/ capital-campaign.

STU THE WHISTLING DUCK In the five years he has been living at Busch, Stu has become somewhat of an official greeter, camped out just outside the Discovery Center and “whistling” at passers-by. He’s quite the charmer! As a baby, Stu was found by a woman who raised him in her home. When he became a teenager, the woman brought him to Busch, where he was placed with another whistling duck and a couple of mottled ducks. Stu seemed to get along well with the others, and Busch released them as a group onto a private farm with a pond. Almost immediately, the mottled ducks flew away, leaving Stu and his whistling buddy behind. About a week later, Stu showed up solo at a nearby garage sale. The homeowner posted to social media about a “found pet duck,” and Busch recognized it was Stu. But when they arrived to pick him up, the woman had already given him to someone else. The next day, a Sunday, Stu visited a local church. Someone called Busch to say a duck was trying to walk into morning services. This time, the team successfully retrieved him and decided Stu would fare better living at the sanctuary. He lives by himself in a pretty sweet songbird habitat with a man-made pond, multiple raised twigs and platforms to sit on, a swing, and even a mirror to check himself out. ❖ M A R C H 2 0 2 1 | JUPITER

Clockwise from top left: Wildlife sightings abound in the Ocala National Forest, like the gorgeous white-tailed deer; a campsite in Alexander Springs; Fern Hammock Bridge in Juniper Springs; black bear. Opposite page: Sweetwater Cabin in the Ocala National Forest NATIONAL FORESTS IN FLORIDA

Experienced campers and those with a taste for adventure can head to the Ocala National Forest, about 230 miles north of Jupiter, for full immersion into nature. The forest (the southernmost in the continental United States) has dozens of places to camp scattered throughout its 673 square miles, from full-service campgrounds to tent camping and even a few cabins. But to venture into the true heart of the wilderness, visitors should make camp at Davenport Landing (or wherever else in the unspoiled expanse their compass leads them). Once a stop for steamboats chugging down the Ocklawaha River, today Davenport Landing offers three primitive campsites where explorers can commune with nature, free from disturbances. Dispersed camping within the Ocala National Forest means there are no services or facilities available, so only those with nature knowledge and survival skills should attempt. Before you go, know the basics of bear awareness, campfire regulations (and how to properly extinguish fires), waste disposal methods, and considerate camping etiquette. Pick a previously used site to minimize disturbance to indigenous flora and fauna, and as you forage for materials

During your stay, consider exploring highlights like the Yearling Trail, which passes not only a sinkhole but also the remains of nineteenth-century pioneer homesteads. There are also more than 600 lakes, rivers, and springs to enjoy. The

most popular are the tantalizingly blue, mind-blowingly clear waters of Silver Glen Springs, Salt Springs, Juniper Springs, and Alexander Springs, where you can swim, snorkel, and even dive (the water remains a constant 72 degrees Fahrenheit). Primitive camping in the Ocala National Forest is free; cost varies for developed campgrounds. WESTGATE RIVER RANCH RESORT & RODEO Interested in the adventurous spirit of camping but not so keen on roughing it? Book a glamping teepee at Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo, about an hour and a half drive from Jupiter. The spacious canvas teepees are permanent fixtures, installed on platforms in a wooded area. Each is fully furnished and air-conditioned but still offers the rugged feel of camping—albeit with luxury linens and a nightly campfire lit for you by the staff. A private bathroom facility with a shower is located a short walk away. With names such as Roaming Buffalo and Soaring Eagle, the teepees are modeled in an authentic Native American style and furnished with rustic touches such as stone fireplaces, cowhide furniture, and cast-iron claw-foot tubs. The 1,700-acre ranch is also launching two new options for camping in style this month: luxe Conestoga wagons, which sleep up to six in a 495-square-foot replica of a traditional eighteenth-century covered wagon, and luxury glamping tents, which differ from the standard teepees in that they are larger and have full en suite bathrooms. While the accommodations are a deliciously swanky take on rustic charm, arguably the biggest draw of a stay at River Ranch is the Saturday night rodeo, where athletes from across the region compete in trick riding, barrel racing, and bull riding. Grab a prime spot in the 1,200-seat arena to experience just how much suspense eight seconds can pack. (If you feel inspired after the show, you can try your hand at the sport on a mechanical bull. Yeehaw!) Other outdoorsy activities available on-site include archery, horseback riding, airboat rides, a petting farm, golf, trap and skeet shooting, fishing, a zip line, and bungee jumping. Camping rates for Conestoga wagons start at $759 (weeknights for a family of six); luxury teepees begin at $379 (weeknights for a family of four). 3200 River Ranch Blvd., River Ranch; westgateresorts.com; 863.692.1321

Keep It Local:

You don’t have to drive far for some of the best camping the Sunshine State has to offer. In Hobe Sound, outdoors enthusiasts will be thrilled by the 16 different natural communities—including rare environments like coastal sandhills, upland lakes, and scrub forests—of Jonathan Dickinson State Park. At 11,500 acres, it’s the largest state park in Southeast Florida and happens to be the closest campground to Jupiter. Overnight options include family, group, primitive, and equestrian campsites. Those looking for a traditional campground experience can make reservations at Pine Grove, located near the ranger station on the east side of the park, or the 52-site River Campground, located about 4 miles from the park entrance. Both have restrooms with hot showers, a washer and dryer, water, electricity, a table, and a grill. Aside from camping, activities in the park include horseback riding, fishing, wildlife viewing, bird-watching, peddling Camp Murphy’s 9-mile network of COURTESY OF MARTIN COUNTY OFFICE OF TOURISM

CAMPING MUSTS

Hobe Sound resident Benji Studt not only works for Palm Beach County’s Department of Environmental Resources Management, but he is also an avid explorer and a conservation photographer. Here, he offers some good advice for newbies.

GIULIA WOERGARTNER

START SLOW. If you’re new to camping, pick somewhere relatively close to home and plan to camp for one or two nights max. Go when you know the weather will be reasonable, which is generally November through late April. EAT SMART. Keep meals simple with breakfast bars, a bottle of cold brew coffee, and lunch meat/ cheese for sandwiches. Ahead of time, make a side that will travel well, like pasta salad. Easy dinners include burgers, hot dogs, or sausages to grill. Also, be sure to store food and trash properly to avoid attracting wildlife. This means keeping food locked in your car or in a secure cooler (bears can open cheaper coolers with flimsy latches!). Food waste and trash should also be locked away, thrown in a campground dumpster, or hung on a waste post at your campsite. PRACTICE YOUR SETUP. Take your tent out of the packaging and try setting it up in your yard at home so you’re not strugglingto figure it out at your campsite. And invest in a decent screen enclosure, like the Quick-Set by Clam (quicksetshelters.com). Bugs are going to happen. ALWAYS HAVE FIRE. At the end of the day, fire is essential to the vibe of camping. Studies have shown that seeing, hearing, and smelling a wood fire is inherently soothing to humans—not to mention you need it to cook and be warm. There are countless methods for making a fire—just search YouTube. Be sure to bring paper and lighters, and of course, practice at home in a firepit or grill before you head off for your adventure.

BENJI STUDT

RETIRE EARLY. Part of the joy of camping is waking up to soft light and an alarm clock of birdsong and chattering squirrels shortly after sunrise. One or two adventures a day is plenty and will allow you to get back to camp before sunset so you can get your fire started and enjoy dinner, as your natural circadian rhythm tells your body it’s time to get into that cozy sleeping bag. Hannah Montana, the Disney Channel original series starring a young Miley Cyrus, into one of the most high-profile and valuable brands in the world. “I worked 20 hours a day, did 18 different people’s jobs, and virtually burned out after more than seven years,” says Gluck, 40, who now lives on 15 acres in Jupiter Farms, where he owns a 9,000-squarefoot ranch with a house, barn, studio apartment, large office, and enclosures for his 26 beloved rescue animals. “I met Miley when she was 11 years old and eager to be a mega superstar. I positioned her and saw the good timing for social media. It was the most unbelievable experience of my life.” Before he discovered Jupiter Farms and began saving animals, Gluck was a New York–reared boy and a budding entrepreneur. Raised in Scarsdale, he came from

a family of achievers. His father, Fred, ran a scholarship program for inner-city kids that helped students get into private boarding schools and obtain top college educations. His mother, Sharon, was a creative and dedicated interior designer— and a major influence on his own work ethic. His brother, Josh, a Harvard graduate and New York University–educated lawyer, is a director and associate general counsel for Facebook in California. After graduating from high school, Gluck enrolled at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, a decision that would change his life forever. “Nobody went to school in Nashville back then, but now it’s the fastest-growing area in the country,” he says. “I was always entrepreneurial and got involved in the arts scene.” He lived in the artsy Gulch neighborhood, which is located between Music Row and

downtown Nashville and filled with urban development projects, music, art, galleries, and record studios. He was more business-oriented, but he liked hanging out with creative people and enjoyed talking to all kinds of personalities, especially older folks who could teach him new things. “I was different in the sense that I enjoyed talking to people’s grandparents,” he says. On the work front, he was just waiting for the right opportunity to arise. “Living in a Gulch loft, I was constantly exposed to music executives like the head of Sony or the Capitol Records marketing manager,”

he says. “It was amazing, like a good ol’ boys network.” Upon graduating from Vanderbilt in 2004, he met established music manager Stan Moress, who taught him about business, artist management, and how personalities are the leaders of the pack. “Stan encouraged me to be unique and find a niche for the next generation,” says Gluck. “Digital was in its infancy, but I got hired for digital marketing at Yahoo. Soon after, I started my own company called Oz Entertainment utilizing interactive media.” He secured accounts like Broken Bow Records, Capitol Records, and other big names that had a presence in Nashville and Los Angeles.

“I was in the right place at the right time,” he says. “Country music wasn’t that much then, and now it is bigger than other [genres].” Through his business, he met Miley Cyrus and was immediately impressed with her loving family and her bubbly personality. “She was a superstar with a presence, yet she was so humble and down-to-earth,” he recalls. “She was liked by both kids and grandparents.” Although he kept his name out of the spotlight, Gluck’s media and digital innovation experience landed him as CEO of MileyWorld, a COPPA-compliant social network (meaning it followed a set of privacy rules for children under 13). MileyWorld, which existed from 2005 to 2012, was an entertainment-driven, safe harbor community for tweens to engage with others their age from around the world. Reaching 500,000 subscribers, the platform helped boost Cyrus’ presence online. “It constructed one million social connections for Miley, and we won all kinds of industry accolades and awards,” says Gluck. Despite Gluck’s hard work and move to Los Angeles, after a while Cyrus decided to take a dramatic shift in the approach to her brand—one that wasn’t so focused on the MileyWorld demographic. “She didn’t feel she had the proper respect of her peers,” says Gluck. “There was a stigma against child stars. Many have people skills but encounter trouble growing up in a world when they are not needed anymore.” He stayed on with Cyrus’ transition

to RCA Records and new management. But in 2013, his mother got sick, and he decided to move back to Nashville and help take care of her. After his hectic life in show business and the stress of his mother’s illness, Gluck was looking for a new challenge. He moved into The Mondrian Hotel in South Beach for 18 months while he decided what to do. “I was totally burned out when I visited an animal sanctuary in South Florida one day,” he says. “I met animals living in squalor there. I had never had animals or a real home because of my work, but I soon began keeping two mini pigs and a monkey with me at the hotel.” By the end of that year, he decided living in Florida would be therapeutic for him— and bought his current ranch in Jupiter Farms. “South Beach was nice but not the right fit for me,” he says. “I discovered Gluck and Louis the lemur Jupiter Farms, and it felt right. He trains them, feeds rehab areas. “I have knowledge of how to do this because I am on them, and gives them medicine when needed—and he loves a similar property with my own ranch,” he says. He is also building every minute of his time with them. “I like to hear the sounds of a two-story cat tower (“Catopia”), improving the rescue services, the lemurs and zebra walking through the pond,” he says. “My and creating a green care therapy program so young adults with whole life now is about animals. Herbal Love: THAI BASIL

“T

here are at least 15 or 20 varieties of basil that I know about,” says Charlie Soo, owner of Talay Thai in Palm Beach Gardens. “My favorites are holy basil, which has a spicy taste, and Thai basil, with its distinct anise or licorice flavor.” Soo buys his basil from a commune in Indiantown and uses it in many of his dishes, including stir-fries, basil fried rice, and grilled whole branzino with garlic basil sauce. Holy basil, or kaphrao, is prized for its medicinal qualities—it’s rich in antioxidants and contains high levels of calcium, zinc, iron, and chlorophyll, as well as vitamins A and C—and its peppery, clove-like taste. But for nostalgic reasons, Thai basil remains Soo’s first choice. “It grows in abundance,” he says. “It goes very well with our cooking and reminds me of home.” 7100 Fairway Drive, Palm Beach Gardens; thaipalmbeachgardens.com; 561.691.5662 —Mark Spivak M A R C H 2 0 2 1 | JUPITER

ine pricing is like the weather: Everyone talks about it, but few people do anything about it. Rob and Michelle Lefkowitz are a rare exception. The owners of Salute Market in Palm Beach Gardens have established an innovative wine program. Salute houses a full-service restaurant as well as a retail wine shop, where diners can purchase wine at retail prices (plus a small corkage fee). The resulting costs are significantly lower than they are at most restaurants in the area. “I was tired of going to restaurants and overpaying for wine,” says Michelle. “You can’t sell wine at retail for $20 and then charge $60 for the same bottle at the table. Wine lovers are savvy,

98

and they don’t like being overcharged.” A bottle of wine at Salute will add about $15-$20 to a guest’s bill; diners are also welcome to bring their own bottle for a $20 fee. Ironically, the Lefkowitzes had no intention of offering seated dining when Salute first opened in 2015. “We opened as a market, deli, and wine shop selling food to go,” says Michelle. “But then our customers started asking for more, and we listened to them.”

Executive Chef Nicholas St. Martin oversees an ambitious kitchen that offers a regular menu as well as a featured menu that changes each month. Most popular are February’s focus on France (“the language of love,” says Michelle) and the recreation of Oktoberfest in the fall. The globally inspired fare includes influences ranging from Kentucky’s Bourbon Trail to the Mediterranean cuisines of Spain and Greece. Even though Michelle and Rob had previously worked as a marketing consultant and a corporate banker, respectively, the transition to hospitality was effortless. “I was raised in an Italian family, so I grew up feeding people,” says Michelle. “For me, the thrill is watching guests dancing in their seats as they eat. And having the right wine pairing takes the experience to the next level.” Their entrepreneurial background also helped them navigate through the pandemic, when they turned the market into a neighborhood store selling everything from toilet paper to steak. The couple had put down roots in the community, locating their home, their business, and their childrens’ school within a 3-mile radius, and those deep roots blossomed during a difficult time. They also expanded their catering arm, providing dinner parties for as few as 10 people or as many as 250-plus. Eventually, they would like to share their experience with other would-be entrepreneurs. Says Michelle: “We learned a lot along the way, and we’d love to be able to help others do it right and follow their dreams.” 5530 PGA Blvd. Suite 101, Palm Beach Gardens; salute2u.com; 561.425.5651

A DECADES-OLD NEIGHBORHOOD JOINT SERVES UP STAPLES LIKE EGGS, PANCAKES, HOT DOGS, AND BURGERS TO ITS EVER-LOYAL CUSTOMERS At Jim’s Place, they don’t just know your name, they know where you want to sit, what you like to eat, and the names of your children and grandchildren. Established in 1978, Jim’s is the oldest restaurant in Jupiter. Originally owned by Jim Deadman, it was purchased in 1991 by Ginger Cook and her sisters. The restaurant today is run by Cook’s children, Amy and Aaron, who have been working at the eatery since they were teenagers. “I believe we were the only breakfast and lunch place around at the time,” Cook reflects on the past. “We thought it was a gamble, but we were busy from the beginning. We’d turn the lights on at 6 a.m., and the room was filled with contractors and workmen. They would plan out their day and then come back for lunch.” The breakfast menu at Jim’s is a roll call of familiar egg combinations and pancake dishes, shifting at lunchtime to hot dogs, burgers, sandwiches, and hearty favorites such as country fried steak. While little has changed over the years, some modern touches have crept in (the cash-only establishment now accepts PayPal, Venmo, and Zelle). “We serve wraps, salad options, and things like avocados and multigrain bread that never would have occurred to us 30 years ago,” says Cook. “However, we still sell quite a few orders of biscuits and gravy.” They treat regulars like family, and it goes both ways. Cook recalls a time when someone drove through their front window, and customers rushed over to help with the repairs. “We’ve been through some recessions and tough times,” she says. “But the community has always supported us.” 901 W.
