here’s something about autumn that feels so, for lack of a better word, emotional. Perhaps it’s the fact that Earth goes through so many changes this time of year. Here in Florida, trees like cypress and elms shed their leaves, the rainy season comes to an end, mosquitoes are replaced by butterflies getting a final taste of blooming fall wildflowers before winter, and we get that first hint of the cooler air to come. Or maybe it has to do with Thanksgiving and the air of kindness, gratefulness, love, and generosity ushered in by the onset of the holiday season. For myriad reasons, autumn gives me all the feels, and I’m always so happy to welcome its arrival. In the spirit of the season, November felt like the perfect issue to shine a spotlight on Place of Hope. For more than 20 years, the organization has been focused on its mission to help children and families in need in Palm Beach County. Through programs and services like housing for homeless and foster youth and families in transition, maternity care for young, single mothers, and recovery assistance for survivors of human trafficking, Place of Hope encourages children and young adults to reach their full potential. Now the organization is expanding its reach up the Treasure Coast, opening a new campus in Stuart. Once completed, the 11-acre campus will comprise four housing complexes that will provide affordable living to at least 64 single moms, aged-out foster youth, and homeless youth, as well as an outreach center where families can come and pick up necessities like diapers and school supplies. Learn more about Place of Hope’s new endeavor, and meet a couple of outstanding young men the organization has helped, in “A New Lease on Life,” beginning on page 46. Of course, November is also about turkey, family, and pumpkin pie.... And we asked a few local pastry chefs to whip up their best holiday pies for your viewing pleasure. These pies are almost too beautiful to eat—but I would (and I did). s we enter the start of season and get busy with holiday preparations, we already have oodles of social and fundraising events afoot. Recently, Jupiter Magazine showed our support for Chasin A Dream Foundation, which held its annual Trashy Tutu mangrove cleanup in September and Pumpkin Fest at Harbourside Place in October. The Cotton Bottom Diaper Bank sponsored a drive in September to help Palm Beach County families in need, and we collected more than 5,000 diapers and other baby supplies. Also in September, the Palm Beach County Food Bank hosted Empty Bowls in the Gardens, where I was honored to be a guest server and enjoyed seeing many of you there supporting this worthy cause. In October, there was the annual Bourbon & BBQ at the Bear’s Club to support STOP! Children’s Cancer of Palm Beach County. It’s so gratifying to participate in our community events and see everyone really coming together. This month, Jupiter Magazine is sponsoring the annual Furry Friends & Fancy Things luncheon November 5, as well as the annual Feast of Little Italy in downtown Abacoa November 3-5. Another fun event that weekend is the Van, Surf & Skate Expo at The Plaza Down Under on the Riverwalk. It will be a busy weekend full of fun, fabulous events to attend! reddy the alligator is having a moment. The oldest resident of Busch Wildlife Sanctuary is clearly enjoying his expansive swamp home at Busch’s new facility, which opened last month. Freddy, who has been a resident of the sanctuary for the past 40 years, has never had a home quite like this. “We have nearly tripled our size,” says executive director Amy Kight. “We now have 5 acres just for rehab and 10 acres for education. We have the ability to educate more people and help more animals in need.” The new facility—formally named Busch Wildlife Sanctuary at Abramson & Schlaggar Reserve—sits on 19.4 acres on Rocky Pines Road in Jupiter Farms. Purchased in 2021, the property was finally ready for occupancy in September, as sanctuary staff began moving its 200 resident animals into their new, expanded habitats. The property not only provides plenty of room for the animals, but it also houses a spacious welcome and environmental education center, an education amphitheater, and a (much larger) rehabilitation complex where animals receive medical treatment and rehabilitative care. Busch Wildlife Sanctuary was founded in 1983 with the mission to “rescue, rehab, release, and educate.” Last year, the sanctuary provided free medical and rehabilitative care to more than 5,000 injured wild animals and conducted over 1,000 educational programs on its 6 acres of land off Central Boulevard, where it had been housed since inception. Now, with three times the space at the new site, the potential to expand everything from medical care for more animals to community programs and partnerships, has grown exponentially. While Kight is thrilled to see the vision for the new facility finally come to life, the path to completion wasn’t always smooth. “From permitting to trying to get money, at times we had what seemed like insurmountable challenges,” she says. “This project really should have died many times, and it was the community who saved it.” She points to a majestic oak tree on-site as an example. The property, which had been bulldozed prior to construction, needed landscaping to provide shade for the animals as well

as improved aesthetics for visitors. The cost of that one oak tree, says Kight, was $10,000. So she launched the “Jupiter Farms Challenge,” a local donation drive, to raise money for the tree. And the community responded. Says Kight: “Homes all over Jupiter Farms had yard signs that read ‘I donated to Busch Wildlife.’ We wanted to raise enough money for one oak tree, and we raised enough to buy four.” Surprisingly, Kight says relocating the animals was the least challenging part of the move: “We’ve been training our animals on moving for years in case of things like hurricanes.” Smaller animals were moved in cages, while the larger ones like bears and panthers were given a sedative so they could be transported at night while asleep, A baby limpkin when the roads were patient at Busch empty, so as not to disturb them—or startle passersby. “Nobody wants to be on the road when a black bear wakes up in the back of truck,” Kight says with a laugh. n 2006, former Jackson, Michigan Mayor Karen Dunigan devised a simple idea to raise $10,000 for a local charity. She gathered 100 women, each wrote a check for $100, and just like that 300 new baby cribs were donated to the charity. Dunigan’s idea evolved into 100+ Women Who Care, a network that now includes more than 490 chapters throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The Jupiter-Tequesta chapter, which launched in 2014 and is run by Audry Ades, has raised more than $250,000 for local nonprofits including MyClinic, El Sol Neighborhood Educational Center, and Furry Friends. “We help raise awareness about [organizations’] causes, get them volunteers and resources they otherwise wouldn’t know about, and connect them to a caring network that is there to back them up,” says Ades. Leading the Treasure Coast chapter is lifelong Stuart resident Carolynn Strom. “There are so many people struggling and so many nonprofits we have not even tapped to help them,” she says. The Treasure Coast chapter has raised funds for local charities including CareBag, Love and Hope in Action, Little Birthday Angels, and Martin County Healthy Start Coalition. Both chapters meet quarterly and are open to new members—

n the aftermath of Hurricane Ian in September 2022, Jupiter resident Jeff Lichtenstein (founder of Echo Properties) wanted to do something to help the people of Fort Myers. He came up with a simple idea: peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. He and his team of 80 agents launched a movement to engage the community in a mission to get 25,000 sandwiches to west coast hurricane victims. Now he’s telling the story in a new book: How Making a Sandwich Can Change Your World. In the book, he talks not only about the sophisticated operation he and his team developed to achieve their goal but also about the valuable lessons learned along the way. hen COVID first hit and things were shutting down, Kai Lassen was looking for new ways to fill her days. A love of hats drove her to online millinery classes and countless hours spent watching YouTube tutorials on hat making. She began making straw and felt hats for herself, then for her friends, and ultimately her creations made it to Etsy and local retailers like Palm Harbor Boutique in Jupiter, which gave her street cred, name recognition, and a growing fan base (and landed her on the cover of Jupiter Magazine in March 2022). “I was very happy and blessed that it happened to blow up in my own hometown in Florida,” says Lassen, who opened her eponymous Jupiter showroom in February 2022. Building on that success, Lassen is now launching Good Shade Only, a line of trucker hats, hoodies, and sweats that captures her beach bum persona and laid-back nature. “Whether out on the boat, fishing at the sandbar, surfing, or playing volleyball, I always have a trucker hat on,” says the former model, who spent time in California, New York, and Europe working with brands like Abercrombie & Fitch, Guess, Lacoste, and L’Oreal. “As soon as I get home after running around doing the things I need to do, I immediately change into a hoodie or sweatpants. That’s always been my vibe.” For Lassen, the name Good Shade Only delivers on two levels. When it comes to the trucker hats, it highlights the skin-protective nature of the items, but it also speaks to the positivity that Lassen aims to foster through her designs. Her pieces feature fun and uplifting catchphrases like “Don’t be shady” and “Spread sunshine,” as well as hometown pride in the form of simply “Jupiter.” Her hometown has been the source of much comfort, she says, especially as she went through a tough breakup last year. Friends and acquaintances showered her with encouraging notes and small gifts to let her know she was supported—

ick Clegg fell in love with nature exploring a brook behind his childhood home in Connecticut. “It was my refuge,” he says. “I became fascinated with the flow of the water, the sound of it over the rocks, and the lizards in it. It was a romance over the years. I revere nature, and I want to respect and honor it.” Clegg turned that fascination into his life’s work, and recently the 66-year-old outdoorsman opened a new spot for locals

to bask in the wonder of nature: Lost River Outdoor Center in Stuart’s Halpatiokee Regional Park. Already the owner of Jupiter Outdoor Center in Riverbend Park and Love Street Outdoor Center, he submitted a plan to Martin County Parks and Recreation so he could expand his footprint up the Treasure Coast. The grand opening is planned for November 1 with special celebratory events on-site through November 5. “I’ve always loved Martin County, and to now be a stakeholder in it is so exciting for me,” says Clegg of having a presence up north. “This provides people with a whole new venue of opportunity to connect with nature, which is really the vision of our business.” Clegg first visited the area in 1976 when he was a student at the University of Miami. He took a motorcycle ride up to Jupiter to visit family and paddled the Loxahatchee, falling in love with the natural beauty of the area. He decided to open a real estate company in town in 1982, but he soon became bored with office-job life. He promised himself that by age 40, he would find his passion— and follow it. Smoky Mountains when he came upon an outdoor center—and decided that was what he would do with his life. In 1997, he bought .67 acres of waterfront property at Jupiter Inlet Village and opened the Jupiter Outdoor Center six months later, an ecotourism business that offers activities like kayaking and guided tours. He also entered the restaurant scene, opening the on-site Kayak Café, and in 2004, he opened one of Jupiter’s most beloved spots—Guanabanas. He ended up selling Guanas 10 years later, but now he hopes to open a similar establishment at Lost River. Jupiter Outdoor Center moved to Riverbend Park in 2019, and Clegg operates another outdoor center in Jupiter at Love Street. He also runs a “glamping” retreat called Headwaters Hideaway, across from Riverbend near the Loxahatchee River, which he built from upcycled storage containers. All of Clegg’s business ventures have been designed to help people appreciate the area’s natural environment. And now he is spreading the love to Martin County with the Lost River Outdoor Center. At the 3.5-acre property, visitors can rent canoes, kayaks, mountain bikes, and e-bikes to explore on their own; sign up for a guided tour of the trails and the Lost River (the southernmost tributary of the St. Lucie River); or attend a fishing demonstration. Visitors may encounter otters, manatees, bobcats, coyotes, Florida panthers, alligators, and various species of fish and birds along the way.

A 16,000-square-foot retail store sells various sporting and outdoor equipment, as well as grab-and-go food and beverages and ice. Future plans for the site include introducing a captain-led, narrated sightseeing cruise to educate passengers about the wildlife, vegetation, and history of the Lost River and launching a day camp for kids during the summer. ollowing a 2020 move from Chicago to northern Palm Beach County after retirement, Todd Prince tied off his 60-foot Azimut motor yacht behind a new home situated just off the Intracoastal, ready to unwind in the tropics like a gentleman, cruising and relaxing with friends. Not long after getting settled, though, the abundance of fishing opportunities at his disposal became a distraction from that plan—one that now had his complete attention. It was apparent that he needed a dedicated fishing vessel to capitalize on all the prospective new adventures awaiting him. When he visited the dealer where he had bought his Azimut, he came across a center console fishing model commonly used as a tender for motor yachts—a 2023 Scout 355 LXF—and decided to add it to his fleet. As a curiosity about all things angling now stood front and center in Prince’s day-to-day routine, he set about outfitting his

LEASE on LIFE

Place of Hope expands its footprint on the Treasure Coast, with a new campus set to open in Stuart providing affordable housing to young adults and families in need

hen Joey Lurie arrived at Place of Hope’s Paxson Campus in Palm Beach Gardens three years ago, he had little of what the nonprofit offers—hope. His parents had passed away, and his grandparents, although caring, struggled to raise the then headstrong ninth grader. Joey was doing whatever he wanted to do, and one of those things was skipping school. Often. That is how he ended up living with Ken and Steffanie Dolch in Cottage 9. “I was scared,” says Lurie, now 18, of his arrival at the tidy home where five other foster kids were also living. “It was weird.” “Weird” because a lot of things changed: Overnight, his typical diet of fast food was replaced with wholesome meals. Soccer practice took precedence over screen time. There were household responsibilities, tutoring and counseling sessions, fishing trips, kayaking expeditions, and seats at Dolphins games. It was during his first week at Cottage 9 that Lurie found a new passion. He was at Rapids Water Park with his foster family when he discovered the FlowRider, a wave simulator. As he swooped across the surf on his board, “people started complimenting me,” he recalls. Lurie was hooked.

Today, Lurie is one of the top flowriders in the country. In August, he boarded his very first airplane to compete in the Flow Tour National Championships in Oklahoma City, where he won the Junior Nationals. At press time in September, he was off to the World Championships in Texas. He paid his way with money earned at Crumbl Cookies in Palm Beach Gardens, a job he’s held for the past two years. He has graduated from high school and now attends Palm Beach State College, where he is studying accounting. “Structure works,” says Lurie, reflecting on how Place of Hope has helped him forge a new path. “It can change your life.” In 2024, Lurie will become one of the first residents at Place of Hope’s new housing complex in Stuart. When completed, the 11-acre campus—a gift from Samaritan Center for Young Boys & Families, which closed after more than 50 years in Martin County—will stretch Place of Hope’s affordable-housing safety net from Boca Raton up the Treasure Coast. The new site, says CEO Charles Bender, will allow youth who have aged out of the foster system, new mothers with babies, victims of human trafficking, and families at risk of homelessness “to move toward independence in safe, dignity-filled housing.” Place of Hope already operates five such residential facilities in Palm Beach County, but this will be its first complex in Martin County. The child and family welfare organization, which took in its first child in 2001, offers assistance to those who have fallen through society’s fault lines in an effort to “break the cycle that holds generations in abuse, neglect, homelessness, and poverty,” says Bender. In addition to affordable housing, the organization provides numerous services to ready residents for success, as well as maternity care, emergency placement for abused children, help for families dealing with the child welfare system, and human trafficking prevention and intervention programs. At the new Stuart property off Cove Road, the residences—dubbed the Bender Family

Village—will comprise two main buildings providing transitional housing, guidance, and support for 64 people “who need the opportunity to pursue goals, find their footing, and get ahead,” says Bender. These residents will include foster youth who have aged out of the system, homeless youth, and human trafficking survivors. In addition, a Neighborhood Foster Care cottage will house foster youth under 18 and their foster parents (similar to Lurie’s Cottage 9 living arrangement in Boca Raton). A separate duplex will provide affordable housing for new moms with young children. The campus will also include an enrichment center offering tutoring and educational guidance, life skills and career training, and parenting and relationship classes. Already operating on-site is Shade Tree Family Outreach, which provides things like diapers, clothing, and school supplies to locals who have had to unexpectedly take in young relatives and need support. Like Lurie, Hasan Dickinson knows the power and promise of Place of Hope. September 2022 was a low point for the then-19-year-old. A sophomore at Florida Atlantic University at the time, Dickinson recalls the week he spent bedding down in an abandoned greenhouse, using a garden hose for a shower. “I was freaking out,” he says. It was a move born out of desperation. As Dickinson explains it, the dorm he had been

living in was being converted to freshman housing, and he suddenly found himself without a home. Being raised in foster care, he had no family to turn to and certainly no money for a Boca Raton rental. Then he found Place of Hope. “It’s like I went from being homeless to an apartment in one day,” says Dickinson, who had been pointed toward Place of Hope by a program for firstgeneration college students that was helping him pay his tuition. Place of Hope offered him an affordable place to live at the Leighan and David Rinker Campus in Boca Raton, where he resides today while working full-time as an aftercare coordinator at the YMCA and honing

Dickinson’s brush with homelessness illustrates an all-tooreal struggle for so many: finding affordable housing. Bender has repeatedly witnessed how just one small misstep can mean a tumble from which there is no recovery. his boxing skills in his free time. He is currently taking a semester off to work at the Y but will soon return to college to pursue a political science degree. He loves his job and is considering adding a sociology minor to prepare for the possibility of a career with the YMCA. “There’s a lot of growth at the Y,” he says. Now 20, Dickinson is on a solid path to achieving all of his goals. “Place of Hope is a confirmation that miracles do happen,” he says. “Even when they shouldn’t happen, when there’s nothing in your life that says you should have faith, you can be transformed from nothing into something.”

While Place of Hope provides the opportunity for success, achieving it is up to the individual. “We’ll hold your hand, but you determine how successful you’re going to be,” says Bender. To that end, participants in Place of Hope’s programs are required to meet certain goals and objectives, like graduating from high school and enrolling in a trade program or college, participating in life skills and career courses, even mastering the soft skills that many people take for granted. “Things like a firm

handshake and looking someone in the eye,” says Bender. It’s learning all of the things, both big and small, that changes lives like those of Lurie and Dickinson. About a month into his stay at Cottage 9, during a conversation with his worried grandmother, Lurie shared a realization that put her mind at ease. “I told her that this is where I needed to be,” he says. “I told her this could be the best thing you’ve ever done for me.” placeofhope.com ❖

The shell is made with ground homemade gingersnap cookies, toasted walnuts, salt, and cocoa butter. For the filling, I boil fresh cranberries with a little sugar until they pop, then put the mixture through a fine strainer. The result is a cranberry juice that is full of flavor and pectin, a natural thickener. With this cranberry juice, I make a curd, which is fruit juice cooked with sugar, eggs, and butter. The new establishment at The Gardens Mall delivers on taste, entertainment, and overall ambience. We collaborated with them to find the perfect location to open a Marlin Bar and bring our shopping, food, and beverage concept to The Gardens Mall.” The 9,000-square-foot restaurant, bar, and retail store is located on level two of the mall near Nordstrom and Saks and includes a large, covered outdoor patio. It’s the perfect spot to chill, with live music daily from 2 to 6 p.m. Inside, the decor is quintessential Tommy Bahama with tropicalprint wallpaper and a Florida-themed mural. To keep things “island casual,” all drink and food orders are placed at the bar. Guests can then grab a table or browse the

retail shop while they wait for servers to bring their order to the table. The food menu features bar food staples with a Tommy Bahama twist: Hurricane Tots served with sriracha aioli, a street corn dip made with both Oaxaca and cotija cheese, fried coconut shrimp with a papaya-mango chutney, and tacos (mahi-mahi, brisket birria, blackened shrimp, and filet mignon). There are a variety of handheld sandwiches, salads, and bowls, and the main ingredients are all locally sourced. As a Managing Director at Northern Trust, Kelly Buist coordinates the delivery of private banking, fiduciary and investment management services to individuals, families, businesses and other organizations. He works with a multidisciplinary team of specialized experts to advise clients based on their own unique circumstances. Kelly is an attorney, admitted to practice law in the States of Florida and New York. Prior to joining Northern Trust, Buist was a practicing attorney with offices in Stuart and Palm Beach

Gardens. He received a Master of Laws Degree in Taxation from NYU’s School of Law. He also received an undergraduate degree in finance and an MBA with a concentration in legal studies from the University of Miami. Kelly grew up in Stuart, and currently lives in Palm City with his wife and two sons. He is honored to have joined The Community Foundation MartinSt. Lucie board. He is Past President of both the Martin County Estate Planning Council and the Education Foundation of Martin County.
