Building the Future of

Nationally, more than one million adults are diagnosed annually with a chronic brain disease or disorder, including Parkinson’s Disease and Alzheimer’s Disease. Approximately 1 in 54 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 10 and 34, and the fourth leading cause of death among

individuals between the ages of 35 and 44. Drug abuse and addiction cost American society more than $740 billion annually in lost workplace productivity, healthcare expenses, and crime-related costs. Disorders of the brain present serious challenges throughout our society, particularly among affected individuals and their loved ones. Through transformative neuroscience research and scholarship, FAU’s Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute is building the future of brain health and training the next generation of scientists and researchers through advanced STEM education. The Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute is made possible by a generous $10 million gift from David J.S. Nicholson, which expands on an initial investment from the State of Florida of $35 million, and ushers in a new era of research and collaboration that originates in South Florida but will touch all corners of the world.

In turbulent markets, remain focused Volatility in the financial markets is a constant. Over the long run, taking advantage of these changes in value i what most investors hope to achieve. Managing the short-term swings, either up or down, however, can challenge even the most disciplined investor. HOW ARE YOU GUIDING YOUR CLIENTS IN TODAY’S VOLATILE ENVIRONMENT?

While the specifics of our guidance obviously vary by client, our recurring theme is: investment success is more likely to happen through thoughtful portfolio management. This means risk analysis, evaluating concentration, and leveraging quantitative and qualitative research. Volatility can muddle investor thinking. In our experience, a basket of investments hastily brought together during market swings can also bring with them unwelcome surprises: tax consequences, increased risk, lower returns and lost opportunity.

WHAT CAUSES MARKET VOLATILITY?

Wide swings in the marketplace can have many causes, and sometimes unknown causes. Changes in company management or unexpected earnings, for instance, can provoke responses that may cascade into sector-wide activity, and beyond. Political events, such as an election, or global events, such as our current pandemic, can trigger turmoil in the marketplace. Whatever the cause, investor emotion often runs high. Investors worry, should I sell, should I buy, am I missing out while others amass a future fortune?

HOW CAN PERCEIVED OPPORTUNITY REALLY BE RISK?

In markets characterized by wide swings, investors can be tempted to sell at abrupt highs and buy at sudden lows. In so doing, they may end up with a collection of mismatched investments that run counter to their financial goals. And they may cash out on otherwise strong investments, eliminating the possibility of further long-term gains. While hindsight is always 20/20, in times of sharp surges and declines, it’s important to maintain a long-term view and focus on your primary reasons for investing.

WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED FROM PAST MARKET SWINGS?

The field of behavioral economics is devoted to the study of the relationship between emotion and financial decision-making. Numerous studies have shown that investor behavior during periods of marked volatility—following a selloff trend, for example—can result in poor returns. A recent Dalbar study compared the 20year results of an average mutual fund investor to indices: the average investor, who sometimes resorts to market timing or other performancechasing strategies, underperformed based on measures of annualized returns and the growth of $100,000.*

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER TODAY’S INVESTOR?

Investors should always keep in mind that the time value of money is perhaps the greatest factor driving its change in value. In plummeting markets, be sure you carefully evaluate the decision to cash in, closing the door on future gains. On the flip side, acquiring “bargain” investments when market momentum is feverishly optimistic may prove to be riskier than at first glance. When serious sums are at stake, we urge investors to seek professional advice.

Happy place

© LILA PHOTO

A

s with most things in life, our design sensibilities tend to evolve over time. Thinking back on my personal metamorphosis, I remember the first time I added my own “touch” to a room. I was a preteen, in the Eighties, so naturally I plastered posters of my celeb crushes all over the walls. I was really into music, and there was a lot of Billy Idol and Tommy Lee going on. Also up there with the bad boys of rock was Snoopy, who for some reason I was obsessed with and thus held prime real estate on my walls. The idea was, here is all this stuff I’m into—have a look! My room was like a real-life Pinterest board. With college years came my forced vintage phase. I took what I could get, building tables out of random old pieces of wood and basically decorating my flat with anything I, or my several roommates, could find. It was definitely a look. But as I got older and actually started having a salary with which I could purchase things, I finally found my vibe. I like earth tones and rustic flair. I like open space and pops of color. I like texture and art. And I like comfort. I’d call myself a minimalist I guess, but I also would never sacrific function for form. It’s where the two meet that I find happiness. Home should be your happy place—whatever that means to you. We all have our own tastes when it comes to décor, and usually those tastes shift a bit from time to time. That’s why I so enjoyed working on this issue, which is filled with design inspiration—from the latest tips and trends (page 62) and inviting outdoor spaces (page 50) to relaxing bathscapes (page 32) and coastal cottage décor (page 30). If you’re itching to switch things up a bit this season, I hope you’ll find some helpful ideas on these pages I’m also super excited to introduce you all to our cover model, Jena Sims. The model and actress is doing something pretty incredible for children through her organization, Pageant of Hope, and she has big plans for her future here in Jupiter. We sat down with her at the home she shares with fiancé Brooks Koepka so we could get to know her better, and I can’t wait for you to learn more about her too (page 42). Peace and blessings,

A charmed life

CHASIN A DREAM PHOTOGRAPHY

I

write this letter after just visiting Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket for the first time. It was as quaint and idyllic as it looks on TV and in magazines—New England at its finest The architecture of the homes is one of the greatest charms of the area. Dating back to the early Puritan settlers, they brought with them the concept of European-style homes and adapted them to fit the harsh winters on the Cape. Light gray cedar-shake exteriors, with their pitched gabled roofs, seamlessly blend in with the coastal landscape and make the carpentry trim and shutters pop. With clean lines and minimal ornamental aesthetics, the look is uniform and sophisticated without being cookie-cutter. The houses exude charm and character, casual sophistication, coastal elegance, and of course, wealth. Back porches with oversized lounge furniture and dining tables ideal for large gatherings point toward the blue waters of the Atlantic and its estuaries. I can picture family and friends huddled around those tables enjoying lobster, clams, and oysters in the height of the summer season. Every region is known for its unique architecture indicative of the area. South Floridians are equally spoiled with beautiful coastal abodes, waterfront mansions, tropical backyards, and a laid-back Florida lifestyle, which we often take for granted. During my visit to Martha’s Vineyard, a young man learned I was from Jupiter and said, “Oh, I’ve been there once. All the houses have pools, and they have these ‘nets’ over them.” My friend and I couldn’t figure out what he meant until she asked him if he was referring to screened-in pools. We had quite the chuckle! This issue celebrates the home, current interior design and décor trends, and functional outdoor spaces that reflect our interests, hobbies, and lifestyles. South Florida is made for enjoying the great outdoors, after all. Wherever you call home, I hope you appreciate the nuances, the history, the craftsmanship, and the charm. Enjoy this November issue and engage with us on social media and on our website for more to do in our little slice of “netted” paradise.

THE EXPERT IN PODIATRY Orlando A. Cedeño, DPM What is your favorite thing about Jupiter? My favorite thing about Jupiter is the family environment. It has a surprisingly smalltown feel close to big cities and provides access to my favorite outdoor activities, including golf and boating. There is no other city like Jupiter, and I am humbled to be serving our community.

How do you measure success? Success is measured by how many patients’ lives I can impact daily, either through standard noninvasive medical care or surgical correction of any underlying deformities acute or chronic.

What is your passion? My passion is providing the best healthcare that I possibly can by implementing the newest treatments and technologies. Currently, we have an excellent team that performs laser therapies for the foot and ankle along with regenerative medicine to optimize overall foot and ankle lower extremity function.

What do you do to stay motivated? What keeps me motivated is knowing how I am making a difference on a day-to-day basis with my patients. I strongly encourage patients to do daily activities that contribute to their mental wellbeing and overall health. I also enjoy spending time with my family and friends.

What conditions are typically treated in your practice? Heel pain, ankle replacements, bunions, sports injuries, foot and ankle trauma, fungal nail infections and treatment of varicose veins of the leg.

What are the current treatments for patients living with heel pain? Shockwave Therapy, Amniotic Stem Cell Therapy and Radiofrequency Therapy.

How often does your practice perform procedures in ambulatory surgery center setting? We perform 90% of my procedures in an ambulatory surgery setting. The only procedures that we perform in a hospital setting are major reconstructive surgeries or procedures on patients with restrictive co-morbidities, such as obesity.

What role do PRP injections play in foot and ankle surgery? We have done many PRP injections in our practice. These injections mainly play a role in the regeneration of soft tissue. After three to six months, the human body will decrease the inflammatory healing process. In patients with a chronic injury, one of the best options is to increase blood supply to the area. We have had very positive results with PRP injections. In the ASC setting, we have used PRP injections to augment many of our soft tissue procedures, such as ligament repair. We are also using these injections to promote bone healing. In the surgical setting, we have seen the injections lead to quicker recovery times.

“A

s a stay-at-home mom for 16 years, I had been itching to start my own business,” says Jupiter resident Shelley Megathlin. “I finally just did it.” She launched Pop Shack 561 in April 2021, and her handmade vegan popsicles were an instant hit among locals. “I always wanted my own juice shop, and one day I saw a picture of a girl with a very gourmet-looking ice pop, and it caught my eye,” she recalls. “I started searching to see if there was anything like that in our area and found nothing, so I got to work in my kitchen. I had no idea what I was doing, but I was determined to figure it out.” She experimented with flavors

asking her husband and neighbors for feedback. “Once I kept getting ratings of 8 to 10, I knew I was onto something,” she says. Her most popular flavors are pineapple basil, blueberry lavender, and chocolate sea salt. The pops—which she prepares at the Vegan Collective Kitchen in Lake Park—are now stocked at places like Ferro Via in Jupiter, Carve Surf & Coffee in Tequesta, Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach, Pineapple Kidz in Palm Beach Gardens, and the Ital Bowls food truck in Stuart. Her popsicle cart also makes regular appearances at local green markets and Downtown at the Gardens. popshack561.com —Skye Sherman NOVEMBER 2021 | JUPITER

TWO SEASONED FITNESS ENTHUSIASTS TEAM UP ON A NEW INTERVAL-TRAINING GYM The best remedy when you’re tired of your fitness routine is to try something new—and Josh Werner and Zach Eggen, former CrossFit competitors who are now business partners, have just the thing. The Jupiter residents recently opened the first Florida location of MADabolic, a strength-driven group interval-training gym, on Indiantown Road. MADabolic was founded in 2011 by former professional hockey players and employs a science-backed training philosophy. In a typical class, participants experience the gym’s distinctive interval system, which consists of work-to-rest ratios tailored around momentum (endurance), anaerobic activity (speed and power), and durability (strength and stamina). “Josh and I have been training and working in the Jupiter fitness industry since 2012,” says Eggen. “We invest in each individual client, and that’s a major factor that keeps people coming back. We are committed to getting to know everyone who comes through the door, understanding why they’re here, and giving them the best possible 50 minutes on our training floor.” madabolic.com

“A housekeeper, a nanny, and a stayat-home-mom walk into a bar.... Well, we didn’t actually meet in a bar,” jokes Katie Humphrey, cofounder of Jupiter-based home DIY brand Zen & Gritty. Humphrey was pregnant with her second child when she hired a housekeeper, Kristina Neitzel, and later, a nanny, Cassidy Russell. “We were together in my house so frequently, we eventually formed a special bond,” she says. “When COVID forced everyone into quarantine, I started noticing ugly and dysfunctional areas of my home,” she continues. She wanted to renovate but had zero experience. Luckily, her employees-turned-friends were there to pitch in. What started out as a single shiplap wall turned into four, “and that led to two custom barn doors, three bedroom makeovers, a full master bathroom renovation, a kitchen and laundry room overhaul, and an indoor two-story playhouse with a slide,” says Humphrey. Having done everything from custom drywall and tile installations to built-ins and lighting fixtures, the trio are now seasoned remodelers documenting their home DIY adventures on Instagram (@zenandgritty). Says Humphrey: “Zen & Gritty features our endless projects and unique team, as well as the life and friendship we share together in Jupiter.” zenandgritty.com

Still, expanding your mind has no age limit—just ask the folks at Florida Atlantic University’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute in Jupiter. The institute offers a variety of liberal arts–based lectures ranging from one-time classes to eight-week courses. This month’s topics range from “Secret Impressionists” (the story of the art revolution sparked by the Impressionist movement) on November 15 to “The Remarkable Story of the Indian Jews” (exploring the controversial origins and

ntertaining season is finally here! And while holidays this year still may not look quite the same as years past, I’ve sourced some dazzling items to make any gathering festive. With three kids, I’m all about easy cleanup, so I’m obsessed with Sophistiplate’s elegant disposable plates and reusable cutlery. Their Gold Harvest setting will be a game changer this Thanksgiving—and the flower-shaped fiber placemat from Crate & Barrel is the perfect backdrop. I love warm, deep scents, and this candle by Floral Street, a fragrance brand all about sustainability and eco-responsibility, pairs nicely with a beautifully set table. Greek Mills’ brass pepper and copper salt mill set is both functional and gorgeous, and Via Coquina is stocked with them (for now)! Another item sure to spark conversation is this unique rainbow flatwear—my daughter calls them the “unicorn forks.” Happy entertaining!

Approachable Luxury INTERIOR DESIGNER ALLY WHALEN EMBRACES A COZY, COTTAGE-CHIC VIBE IN HER NEW STUART HOME Whalen recalls designing baby clothes for her dolls when she was a child. After earning a bachelor’s degree in apparel and textile design from UNC Greensboro in 1996, she spent 15 years honing her across-the-board talents. In 2011, she launched her namesake interior design business (allywhalen.com) out of Charlotte, North Carolina, which now includes new construction, renovation, curation, and design with a focus on primary residences and vacation homes. Known for coastal modern style, Whalen favors light, bright, and neutral with pops of color. “Nothing stuffy or overdone,” says the designer. Her industry talent has not gone unnoticed: Earlier this year, she was recognized as one of Fixr’s Top 200 Whalen’s Stuart home epitomizes cottage chic.

Influencers in the interior design industry, was a top 10 finalist in Rowe Furniture’s Design Challenge, and was featured in the Rowe/Robin Bruce showroom at the 2021 High Point Market. This past January, Whalen and her husband, Scott (the owner of a security firm, who also works with Whalen on her business), moved from North Carolina to Stuart, lured by the glorious weather. She still has many clients in Charlotte and visits about once a month, but she says she prefers to work from Stuart. “I love the small-town feel,” she says. “It’s safe, and people are friendly. I like the weather, sunshine and breeze, and especially that I can leave the windows open six months a year.” The Stuart home she and her husband bought earlier this year is the epitome of cottage chic. “I wanted a smaller house with a cozy feeling,” she says of the one-level, 1,650-square-foot house with three bedrooms and two baths located downtown. “It is very open and bright.” The overall color palette of the living area is beachy shades of tan, white, and soft blues. The living room has a vaulted ceiling and a fireplace, with a sofa and chairs tailored in washable white linen slipcovers. Whalen updated an accent wall with fresh white wallpaper printed with taupe palm leaves. In the kitchen and dining area, the neutral tones are accentuated by wicker chairs and light fixtures and a white farmhouse-style table. “These rooms are conducive to family,” says Whalen, the mom of three children

After years of designing children’s clothing for Healthtex, followed by a stint as director of corporate sales for Simplicity Interiors, she decided to follow her dream of becoming an interior designer. “I was inspired by my background in fashion,” says Whalen, 47, who got her start in interior design by beautifying the homes of friends and family. “But I love interior design more than fashion because there are so many aspects that fashion doesn’t have. It is my passion to create spaces. I love helping transform my clients’ lives with design.” Born and raised in Burlington, Vermont,

plants, woven materials, and hanging pendants and baskets. “I like to bring texture to the room,” says the designer. In her 3-yearold son’s room, fun throw pillows, artwork, and wall decals add personality. Whalen has ordered new all-weather wicker furniture from Kingsley Bate, but while awaiting the delivery amidst the

pandemic-driven disruptions in the international supply chain, the family is using some of their old pieces and just enjoying the home’s tropical feel and privacy. “I love everything about this house— especially the open yet cozy feel,” says Whalen. “I get happy as soon as I walk in. solid ride and stability of a larger sportfish and the speed and handling of a much racier outboard-powered boat. Such a vessel, in conjunction with his motor yacht, would allow him greater flexibility both at home and abroad. He turned to his old childhood friend, Scott Henley, for help. Henley, a former captain, is co-owner and president of custom boat builder Bahama POWER FILE Boat Works, whose boats are LENGTH: 41 feet, 3 inches widely regarded as the pinBEAM: 11 feet nacle of outboard-powered DRAFT: 2 feet, 4 inches sportfish craft. Thomson had so much faith in Henley’s vision for Bahama Boat Works, in fact, that he eventually became an investor in the business. Henley immediately knew the flagship Bahama 41 was the perfect boat for Thomson. The B41’s combination of seaworthiness and superior handling quickly become apparent when you ride aboard. Closer inspection reveals an appreciation for exquisite rigging and meticulously detailed finish work. It was this build quality that brought Thomson and Henley together to work on a custom game boat companion to Thomson’s mothership. Custom builders adapt each boat to the owner’s specific needs, and Thomson wanted a quad-powered boat that fished well in the most competitive setting and covered ground quickly in any weather. He added a Birdsall tower to increase visibility, as well as refrigerated chiller plates in oversized insulated fish holds. He opted to stick with the standard, 60-gallon transom live well, though Bahama Boat Works can build additional bait storage for those who want it. To add another level of comfort on the roughest days, a Seakeeper 3 gyro stabilizer was installed. A large part of Thomson’s boating life also involves quiet weekends anchored out in Hobe Sound, entertaining friends. He added a cockpit lounge and forward seating with a convertible bunny pad, ideal for sunbathing and relaxing. All seating features are removable when fishing becomes a priority. A 13-foot storage bay is tucked within the boat’s smartly trimmed console/cabin, with nearly 6 1/2 feet of headroom.

n his song “People Up in Texas,” the late country music icon Waylon Jennings croons: “You don’t need no one to tell you when you cross that Texas line. The air starts smellin’ sweeter, and the water tastes like wine.” Jennings could very well have been describing Fredericksburg, tucked in the Texas Hill Country, about an hour’s drive northwest of San Antonio. In the spring, roadsides come alive with wildflowers, resulting in colorful waves that beckon locals and visitors alike to pull over and frolic through brilliant bluebonnets and fiery Indian paintbrushes. These blossoms imbue the air with a distinct sweetness, but that’s not where the song’s similarities end. Dripping with Texas hospitality but entrenched in German heritage, the small town of Fredericksburg is full of big surprises. The area is dotted with wineries, restaurants, adorable inns, and a historic Main Street where chains are not allowed and antique stores thrive. Perfect for romantic getaways or vacays with friends, this underthe-radar locale has it all. WILD ABOUT WILDFLOWERS For Texans, wildflower season is a rite of passage; locals will tell you it’s tradition

to dress in your Sunday best and pose in front of the coveted bluebonnets. Depending on the weather, the flowers usually reach their peak by late March and make a swift exit in May. To peep the ultimate fl ral kaleidoscope, head to Wildseed Farms (wildseedfarms.com) to wander through 200 acres bursting with bluebonnets, bright red poppies, and more. The farm also has butterfly gardens, a café, and a store where you can buy seedlings. IT’S ALWAYS WINE O’CLOCK Wine flows like water in Fredericksburg, with around 50 wineries and tasting rooms sprinkled along Highway 290. While the region isn’t as well-established as Napa or Oregon’s Willamette Valley, Fredericksburg winemakers are cutting their teeth on grapes that thrive in the dry, hot climate, such as Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Viognier, and Mourvèdre—and the possibilities are constantly evolving. “Every time we try to pin one down, we fin three or four more [grapes] that do well here,” says Tyler Turbeville of family-owned Narrow Path Winery (narrowpathwinery.com). A seam of solid limestone runs through the middle of Narrow Path’s vineyard, so the

FOOD COMA Fredericksburg lends a German accent to Texan food with a number of authentic restaurants, including Der Lindenbaum (derlindenbaum.com), which offers specialties such as schnitzel. Otto’s German Bistro (ottosfbg.com), owned by Evelyn and John Washburne, presents a creative spin on German fare as seen in plates like duck schnitzel with a blueberry demi-glace. A few doors down, the couple also operates La Bergerie Wine Bar & Shop (labergeriemarket.com), where they layer charcuterie boards with house-cured meats and Pinot Noir–soaked cheeses. Of the 16 roomy suites, a handful cover two stories, with a bedroom upstairs and a living room and bathroom downstairs. A breakfast basket is delivered to your door each morning, and evenings are reserved for sitting by the fire or pool with a glass of Fredericksburg wine. Another quaint option is the Fredericksburg Herb Farm

(fredericksburgherbfarm.com), with its sprawling grounds that evoke storybook scenes. The 14 charming Sunday Haus Cottages mimic the design of Fredericksburg’s historic “Sunday Houses,” one-room buildings German settlers used on the weekends when they came into town for church services or social gatherings. With mile-high banana cream or coconut meringue, pecan pies flavored with chocolate or bourbon, and several choices starring Fredericksburg’s famous peaches, it’s hard to go wrong. Lastly, don’t miss Chocolat, where owner Lecia Duke has mastered a 200-year-old European process of creating delicate sugar casts and spiking the thin chocolate shells with fine spirits and vino from local wineries. A box of these is a great souvenir; once you bite into the chocolate and the alcohol explodes in your mouth, you’ll wish you had bought more.

rowing up in Winder, Georgia, population 15,000, actress and model Jena Sims followed the path of countless small-town girls with big ambitions. At 18, she lit out for the city— first Atlanta, then Nashville, and finally, Los Angeles—as she steadily advanced her career. The chances of landing in Jupiter were slim to none, until she was introduced to the area by her fiancé, champion golfer and West Palm Beach native Brooks Koepka. “I remember after our plane landed, we drove up I-95 to the Jupiter exit,” recalls Sims. “As we crossed over the bridge on

42

Indiantown Road, Brooks turned to me and said, ‘Welcome home.’ I thought that was really sweet, and three months later, I moved here.” That was back in 2017, the year they officially became a couple. Four years later, she is so enamored with the Jupiter way of life that she has decided to settle here permanently. It doesn’t hurt that her younger sister, Hannah, lives here too. “She works for Lola Dré, and I do modeling for them on occasion, so it’s nice to see our worlds collide,” says Sims. “It’s also the first time I’ve lived close to family since I moved out of my mom’s house after high school.” Relaxing by the pool in the home she shares with Koepka, in a quiet neighborhood along the banks of the Loxahatchee River, Sims recounts the many reasons she loves Jupiter, including the variety of great restaurants, the beach, and the mix of people. “I like the slower pace, especially after living in L.A. for almost nine years,” she says. “It feels like a vacation here.” She and Koepka are in the process of building a new home, not far from their current location, where they plan to eventually raise a family.

Sims and Koepka got engaged at Jupiter Beach last spring.

Sims and Koepka met in the modern way—online. She sent him a message through Instagram and, to her surprise, he responded. They eventually exchanged phone numbers but didn’t meet in person until the Masters Tournament at Augusta National that year. According to Sims, Koepka says he clearly remembers spotting her among the spectators between the seventh and eighth holes and can even recall what she was wearing. When they later met, she remembers they hugged and then went to dinner that night with his family. Although she says she knew then that he was “the one,” the two went their separate ways in 2016—but reconnected a year later. This past March, they became engaged after Koepka proposed on the beach in Jupiter. They plan to wed this coming June. Long before Koepka was a part of her life, Sims, 32, had already charted a well-planned road toward her goal of becoming a model and actress, beginning with winning the title of Miss Georgia Teen USA in 2007. While still in high school, she founded her own charitable organization, HBBQ (HasBeen Beauty Queens). Marshaling a close-knit group of former contest

winners, she began staging pageants under Pageant of Hope (pageantofhope.org), for children with mental and physical challenges. “I lost both of my grandfathers to cancer at an early age, and I was raising money for Relay for Life with my grandmother to benefit the American Cancer Society,” says Sims. “Through that organization, I got to work directly with childhood cancer patients and even do hospital visits in Atlanta. I was inspired by that and wanted to spend more time with these amazing kids, some of whom were my age at the time.” “I was in many, many pageants before becoming Miss Georgia Teen,” she continues. “I remember what it felt like to finally win, and I wanted to pass that feeling along.” The goal of Pageant of Hope is to teach inner beauty and confidence,

46

with every participant leaving a winner. “All of them get a title [like ‘best smile’ or ‘best hair’], a sash, and a crown,” says Sims. To date, Pageant of Hope has been held in 16 states and 6 international locations, including Cuba, South Africa, the Bahamas, and Jamaica. Despite being derailed by the COVID pandemic for a year, Sims has the next pageant in the works (in Raleigh, North Carolina) and is hoping to stage one here in Jupiter. Luckily, she has a surplus of potential volunteers to help. “All of my friends are dying to get involved,” she says. “The thing is, they go in thinking they’re helping—and they are. But what they don’t realize is how much they’ll get out of it. It’s so humbling and the best feeling in the world. I get messages from these kids after every pageant, saying things like, ‘I wore

my crown to school’ or ‘I’m teaching my friends the pageant walk.’ One girl who had cancer was in a pageant in my hometown, and she just lit up during the contest. When she passed away, she was buried in her sash, and her mom told me that the pageant was her last great memory.” The charity has always been a constant in Sims’ life, even as her career moved upward. She began modeling as a natural extension of winning Miss Georgia Teen and has never stopped. Since moving to Florida and joining a Miami agency, she estimates she has already filmed around 75 commercials. Acting has led to roles in films such as The Last Movie Star with Burt Reynolds, Attack of the 50-Foot Cheerleader, and Sharknado 5. Her most recent film was Apocalypse Love Story (2020), and there is another new movie in the works, she says. Acting, modeling, and philanthropy allow Sims to spread

48

her wings creatively and fulfill her need for variety and spontaneity. “I like unpredictability, and I like the hustle,” she says. “I’m a Capricorn, and we like to lead with how busy we are. Everything I do is creative.” She recently launched an internet domain for a new venture called Fairway Runway (fairwayrunway.com), which showcases golf and tournament fashion. “People are always asking me what they should wear to tournaments, and I thought I could show them what I wear,” she says of what sparked the idea. “Plus, I need something of my own to keep me busy when I’m on the road with Brooks and am not able to work in modeling or acting.” She is leaving the door open to creating her own fashion line someday, possibly in swimsuits or leisure wear. “I’m happiest when I have a hundred things on my list,” says Sims. “Brooks is driven on the golf course, and our work

drives both of us. But off the course, I would call him more relaxed. We both love giving back. Brooks has a foundation of his own, and we have some similar causes—kids with challenges and animals.” She certainly has a lot on her plate right now—planning a wedding, building a home, supporting Koepka on the PGA Tour, and managing her busy career and philanthropy—but Sims is brimming with joyous optimism, looking toward a future filled with new possibilities in her adopted hometown. “I think people here know me as Brooks Koepka’s fiancée, but I’d like to bring more of my passions here,” she says. “I still have so many dreams, and I foresee us living in Jupiter forever.” jenasims.com; @jenasims (Instagram) Local organizations interested in being involved in a Jupiter Pageant of Hope can contact Sims at jena@jenasims.com. ❖

ith a busy schedule on the road, Sims and Koepka spend much of their time in Jupiter relaxing and catching up on tasks in between tours. “This afternoon, I’m getting my nails and hair done, visiting my sister, and packing for the Ryder Cup,” says Sims (at the time of this interview in September). When they actually find time to u wind, they’re often outside cruising the river on Koepka’s powerboat for sunset cocktail tours, playing mini golf at Lighthouse Cove Adventure Golf, or walking the beach with their beloved 4-year-old black Labrador, Cove. Favorite restaurants tend to be nearby, with Sims joking that they stay in a “bubble” encompassing Jupiter and Tequesta. “We are never in Jupiter very long without at least one visit to U-Tiki,” she says. Another beloved eatery is PapiChulo for the margaritas. “I’m a spicy margarita girl, and I’ve tried them at every restaurant. Papi makes the best.” Sims and Koepka are also regulars at Josco Bar and Oven for the live music and Square Grouper for the laid-back atmosphere that feels like a mini-vacation. Sims says she also sends out the “bat signal” to her friends, meeting up with whomever is in town for lunch or drinks and dancing. “I have a strong group of friends, and I’m so grateful for that.” Cocooning at home, the couple kicks back with “black couch days” to watch reality TV, Sims says, referring to the massive black sectional in the family room. “That couch was in Brooks’ first home, it’s in this house, and it’s coming with us to the next house,” she says with a laugh. “Home is what you make of it and the people you’re with. Just clicking on the remote and seeing the message ‘Would you like to pick up where you left off on Bachelor in Paradise?,’ I’m like, ‘Yes, please!’ That’s home for me.”

or those who embrace a life of activity, a backyard can be an opportunity to mix in a little recreation with relaxation. The key is to cast the diversion in the role of an exciting yet unexpected guest star rather than the headliner. With its sophisticated play on geometric shapes and tiles in varying shades of rich blue, it’s clear that the pool area is the captivating focal point of this outdoor space (shown at left). While it began as a spec project by Turtle Beach Construction, this Jupiter home would ultimately sell before completion, with the company incorporating elements in the finished design that cater speci cally to the client’s tastes. Among these is a putting green area (shown above), complete with a sand trap, set off to the side of the patio. The space pairs the client’s loves of golf and entertaining and infuses an air of amusement into the home’s polished exterior. Annie Santulli didn’t let limited space prevent her from adding a A bocce court on the roofdeck of an oceanfront penthouse little fun to this oceanfront pentapartment on Jupiter Island house apartment on Jupiter Island (shown at right). While two of the rooftop deck seating areas were used for an outdoor kitchen and a hot tub, the third pays tribute to her client’s love of Italy’s Old World style, cultivated on many trips to the country. And what bocce court area would be complete without a couple of Italian marble statues?

here are times when you want your outdoor landscape to serve as a backdrop for your environs and other times when you want the landscape to actually be the environs. When you opt for the latter, the space will offer distinct outdoor rooms, lushly designed with purpose. For this project, landscape designer Tyler Nielsen was tasked with creating a whimsical and vibrant garden that would provide the owner with total privacy. Thanks to the installation of mature palms and other trees along the property’s perimeter, as well as a dense native understory shrub buffer, the backyard was transformed into a secluded retreat. Nielsen artistically incorporated a diverse palette of plants that includes multiple varieties of grasses, shrubs, trees, philodendrons, and wildflowers—all of which were carefully selected to match the scale and stature of the surrounding architecture and frame it appropriately. The space is also rich with plant texture, an important element in creating a natural-looking garden as it provides interest, depth, and visual focal points. Sumptuously curvy outdoor furniture, along with sculptural planters, add to the organic nature of the space and play off the elegant hardscape design to help create the end result of a fascinating landscape that is at once alluring, livable, and immersive.

utdoor spaces that succeed in becoming the life of the party typically showcase a multifaceted personality. For this Juno Beach home, Lisa Peterson of Pineapples Design Group in Jupiter created separate outdoor areas for each of its intended uses— dining, conversation, and relaxation. A covered area equipped with plush seating, a mounted television, and a stylish bar with a built-in cooler serves as the ideal all-weather spot for visitors to chillax with a cocktail or cheer on their favorite team. As thoughts turn to food, a lighted outdoor kitchen gives chefs ample space to prepare epicurean treats while still remaining part of the outdoor festivities. A long, narrow dining table that overlooks the pool and ocean allows guests to maintain conversational closeness while being a thoughtful use of space. Numerous comfy seating areas spaced through the exterior beckon guests to settle in and spend some time mingling with one another. What ties everything together is the blending and layering of textures and unique fabrics from the same color family in each of the spaces to provide a cohesive feel. Partyfriendly backyards also need A long, narrow dining table by the pool to have a flow that encourages movement throughout the entire space and creates opportunities for both interaction and intimacy. By addressing various uses as well as providing options for sitting, standing, and conversing, you ensure guests will feel both engaged and at ease in the social scene you have created. ❖

REFRESH! GIVE YOUR HOME A TRENDY UPDATE WITH THESE TIPS FROM LOCAL DESIGNERS

very year, the interior design industry rolls out its annual haul of home décor trends—some fleeting and some that persevere for decades, even centuries. With cooler weather upon us and the holidays fast approaching, it’s a good time to preen your home, or even just one room, in the most au courant fixations. Here, local designers Jennifer Ribek of Jennifer Ribek Interior Design in Jupiter

(jenniferribek.com) and Baylee Knipe of Baylee Deyon Design in Palm City (bayleedeyondesign.com) weigh in on some of their favorite trends and share some advice for incorporating them into your home.

BIOPHILIC/NATURAL DESIGN According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average American spends a whopping 93 percent of life indoors. The backbone of biophilic design is using natural and wholesome materials, plants, lighting, and other sensorial design elements to create an organic oasis that energizes, refreshes, and connects us with nature. “Bringing the outdoors in is all about blurring the line between us and the outside,” says Palm City–based designer Baylee Knipe. “You can achieve this look by incorporating nature-inspired wall coverings such as a natural grass cloth or palm frond– patterned wallpaper.” She also recommends punctuating your pad with plants and other lush greens, whether with ceiling planters, a potted fiddle leaf tree, or a living wall. Jupiter-based designer Jennifer Ribek suggests weaving in furniture composed of natural materials like rattan or wicker (“They were so trendy in the CLAUDIA BELL

2000s and have made a major comeback”), jute or hemp-mixed rugs, and wall paints in warm colors and earthy tones. You can also lend texture, Ribek adds, with wooden elements like picture frames and decorative bowls or fill a clay vase with flower buds and leaves for an organic touch.

INTERNATIONAL INFLUENCES Take a subliminal vacation with help from furnishings and textiles from all over the globe. “By incorporating ornamental details, textiles, and furnishings from different parts of the world, you can create a feeling you are somewhere else,” Ribek says. “This is so important, since traveling today is not as easy as it once was.” Pick a destination you love, then look at online photographs to get a better sense of the country’s colors, textures, and tones. Says Ribek: “Even a photo from your travels can be the anchor for your design choices.” You might incorporate Asian influences, Aztec tribal tributes, beachy vibes, or a dash of Southwestern élan. Ribek notes that Balinese and Moroccan flair are popular themes. “When I think of Bali, I imagine white sofas, hand-carved wooden coffee tables, and sheer drapes. If you want a piece of Morocco, combine lots of pillows in beautiful jewel tones and hand-painted tiles with hanging lamps.”

GRANDMILLENNIAL STYLE “There are a lot of amazing details that go into the ‘granny chic’ style, which I define as vintage with a touch of today,” says Ribek. “The mix of vintage goods with today’s style is something that is so fun to do because you are bringing life out of history.” Begin with a fabulous wallpaper or fabric with colors that can be highlighted around the room in furnishings and accessories, including art, pillows, or even lighting. Next, layer lace adornments and needlepoint pillows with your heirlooms and curios like the overseas. “These things have value and add such greatness to your home,” says Ribek. COLOR POP From top: The key to color pop is keeping the main furniture pieces neutral-toned, says designer Baylee Knipe; bright, patterned pillows add pizzazz.

There are many reasons why neutral colors like white, beige, and gray are the deities of interior design. Not only do they make us feel relaxed, but they also serve as a focal point in minimalistic and monochromatic design, two trends that have staying power. But just because these subdued tones are in style, that doesn’t mean you can’t take that color wheel for a spin. “I like the main furniture pieces and the rug to remain neutral, and I’ll incorporate strong color through pillows, artwork, and paint,” says Knipe. “This allows you to switch items out with the seasons, or as you please, without having to replace a whole sofa if you get sick of it.” Simple things like adding a large rug or runner, indoor blooms, or a lampshade in a bright pattern or hue are easy to replace and can make a big impact.

MAXIMALISM Unlike Japandi, a portmanteau of Japanese and minimalism, maximalism is a “more is more” style with the ability to balance furnishings, collections, and even

66

Punchy wallpaper can set a Maximilist vibe. Shown here: Arcadia wallpaper in navy blue ($388/double roll), Chelsea Lane & Company, West Palm Beach, chelsealaneco.com

tchotchkes with vibrant textures and bold hues—all under the same ceiling. “I love that there aren’t really any rules that have to be followed with this trend,” says Knipe. “It’s just decorating a space with items that make you happy and not caring if it’s over-the-top because it works.” Happiness is key to designing a maximalist room, which should be stocked with cheery hues and everything you love, even if it feels contradictory. Knipe recommends picking a starting point: “Think of it as your ground zero.” It could be a terrazzo tile floor, wallpaper with punchy stripes, or even a Marvel movie poster. Create cohesion by matching your favorite colors and patterns in furniture pieces, throw pillows, area rugs, and art, which also gives the eye something to absorb.

MULTIFUNCTIONAL SPACES Thanks to COVID, our homes have served us in more ways than we could have ever imagined. For many, they act as a workplace, school, restaurant, and gym all at once. “[COVID] has created a real need for multipurpose spaces,” says Knipe. “Rooms now need to do double or even triple duty, whether it’s making an open floor plan more functional or maximizing a small nook.” Determine how the room will be utilized, then designate separate areas (rugs or room dividers can be helpful here) for different activities. For instance, if you want a spot to watch movies and entertain, Knipe recommends pairing a comfortable sectional around the television with lounge chairs and a storage ottoman that can serve as a tabletop. “Dualpurpose furniture is key here,” she says. And a standing desk with an under-the-desk treadmill placed in a sunny corner is perfect for anyone who has to work, and workout, at home. ❖

SPOT COLOR I’m seeing this a lot—a pop of color against a neutral background, which creates incredible contrast. I have a piece by Miami artist Kre8, who paints very surreal backgrounds with black and white animals and figures and then throws out all these colors like confetti. It’s just splash, splash, splash all over!

METAL PRINTS Printing high-definition images on metal panels like aluminum has become a big movement. It’s much different than printing on canvas—metal prints are so crisp and clean, they almost look real. Plus, they’re fairly inexpensive. GLASS Colored or sculptured, more and more people are buying glass for their shelves and bookcases. With LED lighting, you can light it very easily without running wires everywhere. A fine piece of glass will never go out of style if it’s properly displayed and lit. SCULPTURE It’s not necessarily a trend, but sculpture is a great way to add character to a room. I like metal art—it could be copper, silver, or brass, in geometric shapes, and it could hang on the wall or sit behind your couch. When it comes to metals, my motto is, the more you mix, the more it lasts forever.

FALL Favorite

W

hen Salute Market in Palm Beach Gardens debuted its unique Fall mushroom farrotto four years ago, it almost immediately became one of the restaurant’s most popular Thanksgiving menu items. “Our chef, Nick St. Martin, loves to explore the unexpected,” says co-owner Michelle Lefkowitz. “He likes to take a common element to a different level. This dish represents his creative variation on risotto.” St. Martin

added wild mushrooms, brussels sprouts, heavy cream, and Parmesan cheese to make the farrotto (also known as emmer wheat) earthier and heartier. In addition to its texture and visual appeal, it comes with a range of health benefits. Says Lefkowitz: “Farro is more nutritious than either rice or pasta. It contains more fiber than most grains, has a wide range of antioxidants, and is a better source of protein than most plant foods.” salute2u.com —Mark Spivak NOVEMBER 2021 | JUPITER

hef Julien Gremaud has attracted a local following for his inventive cuisine and bright, tropical flavors. As it turns out, he’s also adept at reinvention. This month marks the first anniversary of the rebranded Avocado Cantina in Palm Beach Gardens, which originally opened in 2018 as an adjunct of his popular Avocado Grill in West Palm Beach. Intrigued by the complexity of traditional Mexican cuisine, Gremaud decided to reinvent the Gardens outpost during the pandemic. “My wife and I visit Tulum several times each year, and I have always been struck by the complexity and diversity of flavors,” says the chef. “When we decided to make the change, I spent some time there taking cooking classes. I knew we had to have the classics on our menu, but I wanted to go above and beyond what customers might find in a typical Mexican restaurant.”

Cucumber tartare His quest led to dishes like shrimp and octopus ceviche and the pork belly Benedict served at brunch. The pork belly is slow-roasted overnight and served on grilled sourdough bread with poached eggs, pineapple salsa, and hollandaise. Gremaud is particularly proud of his rendition of chile relleno, in which the pepper is stuffed with Oaxaca cheese, almonds, and raisins and served with a spicy tinga tomato sauce. The menu also has a special vegan section highlighted by white bean hummus, shishito peppers, and falafel tacos. The bar program is an important complement to the food at Avocado Cantina. The extensive tequila list is filled with Gremaud’s personal favorites and hard-to-find bottles. He offers flight of mezcal and feels that the smokiness of the spirit perfectly amplifies his cuisine. “Mezcal will be overtaking tequila in popularity very soon, and we’re trying to educate our customers about it,” he says. “The flavors are complex and mind-boggling, and they are enhanced even more when mezcal is aged in barrels.” A native of Saint-Tropez, Gremaud started working as a dishwasher in local restaurants at age 14. After coming to the United States, he did a stint at the legendary Le Français in Wheeling, Illinois, under Chef Jean Banchet. Here in Palm Beach County, he served as executive chef at Pistache and opened PB Catch before striking out on his own in 2014 with Avocado Grill. For someone who grew up on the French Riviera, Florida is a natural fit. Says Gremaud: “I’ve always cooked in a tropical style. I firmly believe in using seasonal ingredients that match the temperature outside.” Despite the pandemic’s challenges and the current shortage of staff, Avocado Cantina has resonated with locals. Gremaud believes that his motto—“Mexican soul, South Florida–style”— is the right adage for our times. avocadocantina.com

Lynora’s Italian sauces are now available at Whole Foods Market.

A Taste of ITALY

L

ynora’s has been a local institution since 1976, when founders Raffaele and Maria Abbenante brought their repertoire of Italian classics to South Florida. Diners who enjoy a night out at Lynora’s in Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens, or West Palm Beach can sing praise now that the sauces are available at Whole Foods Markets across the state. Options include roasted garlic, fra diavolo, tomato basil, and marinara, and all are made from 100-percent imported Italian tomatoes. The retail sauces are featured in some of the restaurant’s most popular dishes, such as chicken cacciatore, eggplant Parmigiana, and polpette della casa (homemade beef and pork meatballs), in addition to a wide range of pasta dishes and pizzas. “We are thrilled to have our sauces on the shelves of Whole Foods Market,” says Lynora’s co-owner Angelo Abbenante. “Although we’ve been selling our sauces through our website to meet client demand, we are excited to introduce them to new fans. Whole Foods has a high standard for products that their customers demand. We know they will enjoy being able to enjoy our sauces in their favorite dish.” The Abbenantes began selling pizza by the slice when they emigrated to the United States from the tiny Italian island of Ponza. Today, Maria still works in Lynora’s kitchen, preparing her mother, Lynora’s, recipes for a loyal following. Her guests can now try their hand at replicating those dishes at home. lynoras.com —Mark Spivak
