Waterfront Properties has always been known as a technology leader in the real estate industry. Now, they are investing $1.5 million into their award-winning website to supercharge it with the latest AI technology, keeping them leaps ahead of their competition. With the help of their longterm marketing partner, Real Estate Webmasters (REW), Waterfront will use the AI technology in new ways to better serve buyers and sellers.

“Everyone is talking about AI, but what does it mean for our future? What does it look like to embrace it head on?”says Rob Thomson, owner of Waterfront Properties. “When we heard REW CEO Morgan Carey talk about what they were doing with their new AI Robot REWpert and their global MLS, we knew we just had to be at the front of the line.”

In July, Carey visited Waterfront headquarters in Jupiter to work with Thomson, personally developing strategies and techniques for Waterfront to use the integrated AI in their

website, Waterfront-Properties.com, which will increase website traffic, buyer inquiries and contribute to a higher selling price.

“Our team has been busy building their knowledge base to implement AI in many aspects of our marketing” says Thomson. Now, Waterfront’s agents and 20-person marketing team will be further equipped with tools to help them work smarter, more efficiently and more productively daily.

As a technology leader, Waterfront Properties believes that by using AI in its early stages for marketing, research, problem solving, and technology solutions, they can give their clients unprecedented results, providing them with experiences and solutions that are unmatched in the market.

Sweet September

Last September, we launched our special “Ones to Watch” issue, highlighting local folks doing all sorts of cool things, many of whom you may not have heard of until you read about them on these pages. And that’s the idea behind the package: There are just so many amazing people who live here, with more and more arriving every day, we wanted to devote an issue to showcasing some of their accomplishments and endeavors. It’s hard to believe it’s already September again—and time for our second annual Ones to Watch issue!

I’m so impressed with the movers and shakers who made our list this year. There’s Courtney Miller, a research scientist at Scripps who is making big strides in discovering new treatments for both brain cancer and meth addiction. And Sami Kattan, a talented videographer who uses his artistic talents to support conservation efforts. Jerry Haffey, who served as a specialist in the U.S. Army, devotes his time to helping veterans with PTSD work through issues like depression and survivor’s guilt. And of course our cover star, Laura Guley, a young actress from Jupiter who got her start at the Maltz and now has her sights set on Broadway. These are just the tip of the iceberg, and I hope you enjoy reading about them and all of the other 2023 Ones to Watch profilees. Their stories begin on page 36.

As we look forward to fall and prep for the many events coming our way this season, I’ve recently gotten a literal taste of what’s to come.... Over the past few weeks, our publisher, Tanya, and I have been invited to sample some of the menus local restaurants are offering as part of this year’s Flavor Palm Beach (running all September long), and I’d like to send a chef’s kiss to y’all for having us. There are more than 50 restaurants participating this year, so start planning your dining excursions now! It’s a chance for you to take advantage of the special prix fixe menus at some of the best spots in town and support our local businesses at the same time— what’s not to love about that?

Peace and blessings,

H orn T ooT in ’!

Summer memories

Wow, I can’t believe it is already September! As our team gears up for the season, I am looking forward to getting back into the normal routine of supporting charitable events, catching up with friends and clients who have been out of town, and the cooler temperatures to come.

It’s nice when things slow down a bit and allow us to come up for air and reconnect. And as we enter season, I’m reminiscing about some of the good times spent with friends, family, and clients this summer. One of the best moments for me was sharing in the celebration of my mother-in-law’s eightieth birthday in Rockport, Massachusetts. The lovely day started with a two-hour sail on the beautiful, 58-foot pinky schooner Ardelle. After the sail, we all went back to our rental home in Rockport and shared a traditional New England lobster feast as well as some Caribbean cuisine from one of the birthday girl’s favorite local restaurants. The gathering of our family to celebrate a woman who means so much to all of us is a memory I will hold dear to my heart. Sandy, if you are reading this, you are an inspiration to me for being an outstanding mother, wife, grandmother, and a true steward of your community—and I am so blessed to have you as a mother-in-law.

While in New England, we also ventured over to Narragansett, Rhode Island to see some friends. We had a wonderful time with the Brown family, as always! Thank you, friends, for hosting us each summer for a long weekend. More memories that will last forever….

To the many new and existing clients I have worked with over the summer to plan marketing strategies for the upcoming season and beyond, I am grateful for your business and friendship. There are far too many of you to list, but you know who you are.

For our annual September “Ones to Watch” issue, our editor is once again featuring locals who are doing amazing things in various industries. Also in this issue is our annual “Leaders of Palm Beach County” special advertising section. If you are interested in advertising as a leader next September, let me know soon so we can start discussing options.

Looking ahead, don’t miss the Charity Datebook in October, an annual special insert that runs in both Jupiter Magazine and Stuart Magazine. Hopefully, this promotional guide will help you plan the organizations and events you’d like to support, get your tickets early, and investigate sponsoring or donating, as they all need help from the community.

In every issue, we also have special advertising opportunities in our Real Estate Section, Luxury Homes Guide, and Flavor Dining Guide. Another advertising section, the Home Resource Guide, runs in seven issues a year and serves as a tool to help readers find resources for their home projects.

If you haven’t already, please make a note to sign up for our weekly Insider’s Guide e-newsletter, which will keep you informed about what is happening around town. Visit jupitermag.com to sign up for the newsletter, which is delivered straight to your inbox every Wednesday.

I’m very much looking forward to creating new memories this season with our readers and clients. As always, thank you for your readership and support of all our publications here at Palm Beach Media Group. Without our readers and advertisers, we could not keep growing in the direction we are.

Hope to see you around town!

SNAG A UNIQUE PIECE OF ARTWORK AND HELP KEEP OUR DOG BEACH CLEAN

Friends of Jupiter Beach has entered the NFT world, partnering with Jupiter-based Snap Cares to create one-of-a-kind digital artwork to raise money for its mission. The design captures the essence of the community, featuring the iconic lighthouse, pier, and of course, dogs. The collection includes 150 unique pieces, each having a slight variation from the base design, which are available for purchase online (via Shopify) for $100 each. Fifty percent of each sale goes toward the purchase of poop bag boxes to help the org in its quest to keep the dog beach clean. The NFTs make great screen wallpaper for cell phones and

tablets, or can be printed on merchandise like totes and tees by uploading the image to VistaPrint. Buyers also receive a physical copy of the artwork and, as a bonus, a variety of coupons, rewards, and incentives for local restaurants, services, and events including Twisted Tuna, Brick and Barrel, The Golf Club of Jupiter, and more. The campaign launched in conjunction with the 13th Annual Food & Wine Festival in May and will continue to be sold (while supplies last) until next year’s event on May 18, 2024, when a new design will be released. Looking for a way to get around town without racking up Uber fees? Enter Freebee, a free, on-demand transportation service offered by the City of Fort Pierce and the Fort Pierce Redevelopment Agency. Freebee launched this past spring as a one-year pilot program, offering free rides around Fort Pierce (during certain hours). The service zone extends from downtown Fort Pierce and across the bridge to the north end of the island on the beach side. Shyanne Harnage, Fort Pierce’s economic development manager, says Freebee was launched to help connect residential neighborhoods to the waterfront and downtown and historic districts, as well as to alleviate traffic, resolve parking issues, boost the local economy, and assist people who don’t have access to other modes of transportation.

Free Rides in Fort Pierce PATH to SUCCESS

According to data obtained by the United Way of Martin County, only 51 percent of Martin County students read at grade level by third grade, which is below the state average of 53 percent. To help improve these numbers, the organization partnered with the Martin County Board of County Commissioners and the Martin County Community Redevelopment Agency to install Born Learning Trails in New Monrovia Park and Kiwanis Park in Stuart this past spring. The trails feature painted walkways accompanied by signs, in English and Spanish, that prompt kids to take part in fun, educational games that boost language

Bonus: The vehicles are 100 percent electric, making the city cleaner and quieter. Passengers can download the Ride Freebee app to request a ride (or call 855.918.3733). The service is available from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays and Sundays and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. ridefreebee.com —Paige Feigenbaum

How to compost like a pro

According to the City of Stuart, 30 percent of waste collection in the city comprises food scraps that end up in a landfill. “People are sending extraordinary amounts of food waste to the landfill that could be repurposed,” says Anne Ellig, utilities and engineering program manager for the City of Stuart. “Residents can recover a substantial portion of that by composting.” To that end, the city hosts free one-hour workshops conducted by University of Florida IFAS Extension instructor Jennifer Pelham to teach the community how to compost. But if you want to get started now, just follow these steps provided by Ellig.

Invest in a tumbler composter and thermometer. Composters come in a variety of sizes, so purchase one appropriate for your yard, patio, or balcony. The tumbler needs to heat up in order to break down the contents inside, with an ideal temperature of 122 to 131 degrees Fahrenheit, so place it in direct sunlight. (To learn if you qualify for a free 34-gallon tumbler composter, contact Ellig at 772.600.1206.)

Collect your food “trash.” Put compostable food scraps like vegetable peelings, tea bags, and coffee grinds in a container with a lid (such as a coffee can) and dump the

contents into the composter daily or weekly. Tip: Keep the container in the fridge to prevent odors in your home.

Add carbon and gen. Put a 30-to-1 ratio of carbon/nitrogen in the composter via the access door, which slides open. Carbons are your dry, brown products such as dried leaves, shredded palm fronds, paper, hay, straw, and sawdust. Nitrogen includes green or moist items like food scraps and grass clippings.

Agitate away! Spin the unit at least once a week to rotate contents and increase the oxygen inside.

Wait. It takes six to eight weeks for the composting process to be complete. You’ll know it’s ready when it looks and feels like a fine, granular humus. If an item is larger than one inch, toss it back in to decompose further. Use a sifting screen to easily sort the dirt from larger pieces.

Disperse. Collect the soil in a bucket and distribute throughout your flower or vegetable garden. If you don’t have

a garden, Ellig suggests sharing the soil with a neighbor or a community garden. The mulch created from composting helps retain moisture, so you don’t have to irrigate as much and can save on your water bill. “In Florida, more than half of your water bill can be due to irrigating lawns,” Ellig says.

The next city composting workshop will take place October 11 at 6 p.m. For details, contact Anne Ellig at 772.600.1206. ❖

Another way of composting is vermicomposting, which uses red wiggler and African night crawler worms to do the dirty work. Local company Let it Rot collects compostable waste from residences, small businesses, and nonprofits from Stuart to Boynton Beach and brings it offsite for worm composting so you don’t have to think about it. There is a one-time supply fee of $52 (plus tax) for residents and $114 (plus tax) for small businesses. Monthly subscription cost is $16-$19 for residents, depending on pickup address, and $42 for businesses. For more information, visit letitrot.org.

Welcome to PARADISE

Newly transplanted Stuart resident and boating enthusiast Jon Perette is no stranger to the Florida boating lifestyle. Although he’s a fairly recent arrival to the Treasure Coast, Perette has extensive fishing and cruising experience in the Florida Keys. His boating career originated on the waters of Cape Cod and Massachusetts Bay, where he ran a string of charter fishing boats during the summer while operating a popular restaurant in the winter.

He found himself increasingly drawn to the Sunshine State, where he spent much time leisure-cruising aboard boats ranging from very sea-kindly Down East lobsterstyle vessels to inboard diesel sportfish models as well as faster, outboard-powered center consoles.

Having a turn at such varied hull designs gave Perette insight into what he liked and disliked about each model. Armed with this knowledge, a trip to the Palm Beach Boat Show last year provided a chance meeting with what would become a perfectly balanced platform to cruise and fish with his family.

What all of his experience on the water taught him was simple: He wanted both speed and comfort. The comfortable, dry ride of a lobster hull was ideal but lacked the speed he needed for

distant water outings. The speed of his previously owned center consoles was convenient, but he was unsatisfied with ride performance on the various models from his past. In the twin hull HammerCat 35, he found the perfect combination of these two traits.

Fort Lauderdale–based Hammer Yachts builds two models at its production facility in South Africa—the HammerCat 35 and the latest HammerCat 45. Each boat is a semi-custom build utilizing the most modern construction methods, including resininfused E-glass, epoxy, and carbon composite materials. The

hull cavity spaces not used for storage are dry-sealed with XPS waterproof, closed-cell foam, making these boats unsinkable. The ride advantage of a twin hull boat is taken a step further on the HammerCat 35 by raising the deck height for better water clearance underfoot while underway. Multiple strakes aid in confident tracking and deflection of spray for a soft, dry ride.

Perette’s particular build was designed with an interior workspace that offers maximum fishability for his lifestyle, including a large custom tackle and rigging station behind the helm, carbon fiber outriggers, a 50-gallon live well, multiple insulated fish holds, and a pair of 16-inch Garmin MFD units. For family cruising days, a giant forward sun pad offers comfortable lounging for everyone, while a transom platform provides easy access to the water for swimming. A 10-by-12-foot hard top provides plenty of shade, and abundant dry storage is perfect for extended family getaways in the Bahamas. ❖

GRANDE ADVENTURE

Visiting Orlando with kids used to mean schlepping all around town to check every box: easy access to theme parks, a luxe hotel, fine dining, elevated poolside experiences, sporting activities, and all of the aquatic adventures. With the recent completion of its new water park, Grande Lakes Orlando puts all that (and then some) in one resort destination.

The 500-acre Grande Lakes encompasses The RitzCarlton Orlando and JW Marriott Orlando, as well as golf, tennis, a 40,000-square-foot spa, multiple pools with decked-out cabanas, and a dozen dining venues, including the Michelin-starred Knife & Spoon. But the biggest attraction is the new Grande Lakes Water Park with six zones of fun. Here you’ll find not just a water slide but an entire slide tower with three slides ranging from mellow to rocket-fast. Splash Cove offers activities in and out of the water, including the PlayVenture playground with climbing structures and lawn games. AquaVenture ratchets up the thrills with an obstacle course featuring balance beams, bridges, climbing, and slides. After a day of play, kids love to float down the Lazy River, while parents hang out on swim-up daybeds at the Sanctuary, an adults-only island within the water park.

The Industry Innovator: JOSEPH VISCONTI

When Joseph Visconti bought Fort Pierce boat manufacturer Twin Vee in 2015, he had neither marine nor manufacturing experience. What he did have was a vision for where he could take the company. “I’m a serial entrepreneur,” says Visconti, 58. “I like fixing broken businesses, and I like giving people opportunities.” In the past eight years, the Juno Beach resident has grown the 29-year-old company from $3 million in sales to $33 million, from 25 employees to 180, and manufactures 240 boats a year. In 2021, he not only took the company public on NASDAQ, but he also started a new company—Forza X1—creating electric boats for the mass market. The boats, which run up to 40 mph on five hours of battery time, were designed and engineered under the leadership of industry innovator Jim Leffew, whom Visconti hired to fulfill his vision of an affordable, eco-friendly electric boat line. “I read a study that said in Florida alone, the oil and gas that come out of recreational boats annually is equivalent to the Exxon Valdez spill,” says Visconti. His Forza X1 boats not only have significantly less impact on the environment, but they offer a better boating experience too. “They are so quiet, you can hear the ocean and the breeze,” he says. Electric motors also use 90 percent fewer moving parts, making them more efficient and economical to manufacture than combustion engines. Visconti rolled out the first Forza X1 to the marine market this past July. And next year, he plans to open a new facility in North Carolina, with the goal of eventually putting 1,000 electric boats on the water every year. Says Visconti: “I want to build the leading mass-production electric boat company in the world.” forzax1.com; twinvee.com

The Entrepreneur Maker: BRENT MAHIEU

Brent Mahieu credits one of his high school teachers with getting him where he is today. “I was 17, my mom had died, and I was struggling,” says Mahieu, 48, who went to high school in Connecticut. While grieving his loss, Mahieu recalls his accounting teacher, Mr. Murphy, putting his arm around him and telling him he was really good at accounting: “[Mr. Murphy] is why I went into finance.” After working in New York for financial powerhouses like Salomon Smith Barney, Citigroup, and JPMorgan Chase, Mahieu moved to Palm City in 2002—and memories of his accounting teacher once again set his career path. He was browsing the Martin County School District website and saw that the district was looking for a teacher for the Entrepreneurship Academy at Jensen Beach High School. “I just wanted to have the opportunity to be that Mr. Murphy for somebody else,” he says of his decision to apply for the job. In 2011, he was hired. The academy consists of a three-year program designed to teach high

school students how to build a business from the ground up. Students who complete the program can earn an Entrepreneurship and Small Business Certification attesting to their knowledge of entrepreneurship and small business principles and making them highly marketable in the business world after graduation. Many of Mahieu’s past students are now running their own businesses; some started doing so while still in high school. The program has been so successful, student enrollment has doubled since Mahieu took over. And he has big plans for the future: In the next two years, he is hoping to generate seed money for his students’ startups through local residents, businesses, and community leaders. Mahieu, who now lives in Port St. Lucie, also coaches boys’ lacrosse at Jensen Beach High School and was named Career Technical Education Teacher of the Year in 2022. martinschools.org

The Future Builder:

NICOLE PLUNKETT

Nicole Plunkett sits at Jupiter restaurant Lucky Shuck with a big smile on her face, which has nothing to do with the delicious ahi salad sitting in front of her. “There are so many moments when I feel excited about my career,” Plunkett says, looking over the beautiful setting that was part of the Love Street project her company, Cotleur & Hearing, completed in 2021. A partner and landscape architect at the firm, Plunkett, 37, has designed some of the most high-profile projects in the area including Love Street and the redevelopment of Downtown Palm Beach Gardens. When she was a kid growing up in Jupiter, she didn’t know landscape architecture was even a career path. As a successful adult, she recognized the need to bring more attention to the industry and created Future Landscape Architects of America, a nonprofit that trains college students to be industry ambassadors for young children. “I wanted to form a hub for college students and professors to talk to kids about landscape architecture,” she says. Plunkett first launched the program at her alma mater, University of Florida, in 2017. UF students organized a class trip to a local elementary school to build an outdoor classroom, showing the young students an example of how landscape architecture creates environments all around them. Now replicating the program at other universities, Plunkett also sits on UF’s advisory board for the Department of Landscape Architecture and, in 2022, was named a “40 Gators Under 40” honoree, the university’s annual recognition of “outstanding young Gators who are going greater in their communities and professions.” She was also named the 2023 “Young Professional of the Year” by the Palm Beach North Chamber of Commerce. flaamerica.org; cotleurhearing.com

The Community Connector: CANIERIA

GARDNER

Fort Pierce resident Canieria Gardner sees opportunities everywhere she looks. As the founder and CEO of Incubate Neighborhood Center in Fort Pierce, Gardner, 44, has created a hub to connect one of the most underserved communities on the Treasure Coast with much-needed resources. Originally from Vero Beach, Gardner began her career in sales, marketing, and financial services, ascending to management positions. When she was in her mid-thirties, she knew she would eventually have to relocate if she stayed in her current career. “I asked myself, ‘How do I want to live my life?’” recalls Gardner, who was living in Orlando at the time. She moved home in 2004 and started working in foster care, then workforce development, and eventually took a job as executive director of United Against Poverty in Fort Pierce. “I started noticing a lot of gaps in services,” says Gardner, who soon turned her focus to the Lincoln Park neighborhood, a 2.5-square-mile residential area of Fort Pierce where 57 percent of the residents live below poverty level. There, she saw an opportunity to build a community hub, and in April 2022, she opened Incubate Neighborhood Center in the old Means Court Elementary School, which was once the only school in St. Lucie County for Black students. Through Incubate, Lincoln Park residents are able to enroll in homeownership and entrepreneurship programs. The center also has an internet café, a library, and conference rooms and hosts regular community events. Gardner hopes to open similar hubs in underserved communities throughout the country. “It’s very important for people in these communities to have a place to go,” she says. “We’re trying to level the playing field for them.” incbiz.org

The Brain Healer: COURTNEY

MILLER

Everything is brain science for Scripps Institute professor and director of academic affairs Courtney Miller, who has been studying how the brain works for more than 25 years. The Jupiter resident first became interested in neuroscience in high school and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in biopsychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara and a PhD in neurobiology from UC Irvine. After completing her postdoctoral program and working as a research scientist and scientific director, she was hired by The Herbert Wertheim UF Scripps Institute for Biomedical Innovation & Technology in 2009. “Scripps supports entrepreneurs and drug discovery,” says Miller, 45, whose postdoctoral work focused on the role of memory in substance abuse. At Scripps, she continued that research, zeroing in on a particular protein in the brain that seemed to play a significant role in methamphetamine addiction. The function of the protein is to drive brain plasticity, or the ability of the brain to modify or rewire itself when exposed to something new. After this exposure, it goes inactive. Miller discovered that when exposed to methamphetamine, this protein does not go inactive. By researching different compounds, she was able to identify molecular entities that target the protein and cause it to go inactive, effectively removing the craving for meth. She developed the lead compound, called MT-110, through her Jupiterbased startup, Myosin Therapeutics, and it is expected to go to phase 1 clinical trials in 2024. The drug could be groundbreaking in treating addiction. “Currently, there are no FDA-approved treatments for meth disorder,” says Miller. Myosin Therapeutics is also developing MT-125, another compound from the same protein, for the treatment of glioblastoma, a highly aggressive form of brain cancer with a 95 percent fatality rate. MT-125 has seen some results in stopping cancer cell division and migration of this form of cancer. “There aren’t too many eureka moments,” says Miller, who has lost loved ones to glioblastoma. “It’s really hard work, but it’s really satisfying.” scripps.ufl.edu; myosintherapeutics.com

The Hero Helper:

JERRY HAFFEY

Jerry Haffey is a war hero. As a specialist in the United States Army, he proudly served his country for four years. “I was blown up eight times,” says Haffey, 39. “The fact that I’m alive is a miracle.” Yet what he finds most heroic about his life is the work he does with Fort Freedom, the nonprofit he founded in 2019 to help veterans suffering from PTSD. The organization assists war vets with the transition from military service to civilian life. In 2007, Haffey was one of those veterans. Originally from Philadelphia, he joined the army in 2004 when he was 19. After basic training, he was sent to Fort Polk, Louisiana, then transferred to Fort Drum, New York, where he was assigned to a new unit combining reconnaissance and infantry. A first of its kind, the Tenth Mountain Division deployed to Iraq in 2005, where Haffey went on 150 joint patrols targeting insurgents and 35 “kill or capture” missions. He completed his service in 2007 and moved to Port St. Lucie, taking an entry-level job with a behavioral health provider. But civilian life proved difficult for Haffey, who now lives in Palm Beach Gardens. “I thought every car next to me was going to blow up,” he says. Trained for battle in the military, he also started getting into a lot of fights. Recognizing he was suffering

from PTSD, Haffey sought help, and while on a spiritual retreat in 2015, he experienced a transformative moment. While walking a labyrinth, he arrived in the center and, as he recalls: “I looked down, and someone had left the crest from Fort Polk.” Haffey returned home determined to find a way to help veterans and eventually founded Fort Freedom, where veterans undergo an intensive 12-week program that gives them the tools and techniques they need to work through challenges like depression and survivor’s guilt. The program incorporates relaxation techniques including yoga and meditation, life and nutritional coaching, social experiences, weekly experiential therapy, and mentorship. Last year, 35 veterans went through the program; this year Haffey expects to help around 100 veterans. The organization also offers a program for family members. “It’s extremely difficult to be the wife of someone suffering from PTSD,” stresses Haffey. “I’m an optimist though. Awareness of mental health is at the highest level ever. Ultimately, what we are doing is raising consciousness.” myfortfreedom.org

The Food Forester: AMANDA PIKE

Jupiter Farms resident Amanda Pike never has to trick her son, Wesley, into eating his greens. The 7-year-old runs through the two-acre property that Pike, 40, has transformed into a food forest, confidently and correctly identifying edible plants like katuk (star gooseberry), abika (sunset hibiscus), and pigeon pea. Considering that 70 percent of the family’s food comes from their backyard, Wesley has eaten more plants than most kids his age have even heard of. Pike, who holds a PhD and is a board-certified art therapist and professional educator, speaks passionately about the impact of poor nutrition in today’s society. “A lot of kids I’ve treated had nutritional deficits,” she says. “Half of Americans have a health condition related to diet.” When she and her husband, James, moved to Jupiter Farms in 2019, she let her new yard grow wild and took note of the outcome, marking areas where the ground was wet or dry and planting the right species for each area. Some plants, like Bidens alba (butterfly needles), came up naturally. The

little white flower with a yellow center has a similar nutrient profile to kale. Pike’s yard now yields everything from Seminole pumpkins, bananas, and mulberries to Mysore raspberries, almonds, and jackfruit. Both pigeon pea (which is similar to soybean) and jackfruit (a large fruit heavy in protein and carbohydrates) grow prolifically and can be used as replacements for wheat, corn, and rice. There are also 26 beehives on the property, tended to by a local beekeeper (Pike trades the space on her property for free honey). She hopes to inspire more people to grow their own food by giving free tours of her property and posting recipes and food tips online. She also runs a 4H group and serves as education chair and chapter representative for the Palm Beach County chapter of the Native Plant Society. Her new book, Transforming Florida Yards: A Regional Food Forest Guide, was published in June. @florida_food_forests (Instagram)

The Takedown Artist: TIANA CAFFEY

Tiana Caffey used to love to wrestle with her big brother when she was a child. She recalls challenging herself to do whatever he was doing when she was just 3 years old, even though her brother was four years older. “Growing up, I was around sports my whole life,” says Caffey, now 25. Her father is the football coach at Jensen Beach High School, her mom played basketball, and her brother played football. Early on, Caffey decided soccer would be her sport. She quickly discovered she had a knack for the game and, in her junior year at Jensen Beach High School, she was selected for the U.S. U-17 Women’s National Soccer Team (the under-17 league operated by U.S. Soccer). After graduating from JBHS in 2017, Caffey went on to Louisiana State University on a soccer scholarship, graduating in 2021 with a degree in sports administration and business. Although she had suffered a torn ACL during her senior year, she was ready for Major League Soccer and registered for the draft. As she waited to learn of her destiny, she received an email—not from MLS but from the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment). The American professional wrestling org wanted her to wrestle professionally, which caught her and her family totally by surprise. “When I showed it to my parents, my dad said, ‘There’s no way that’s real,’” she recalls. But it was real, and when she later received the disappointing news that she was not drafted by a MLS team, she decided to accept the invitation from the WWE. “It was life-changing emotionally,” Caffey says of the sudden change in her plans for the future. In March 2022, she traveled to Dallas for tryouts. On the last day, as she was packing up to leave, she was called back to the stadium—where Triple H, one of the greatest pro wrestlers of all time, was waiting. He asked her point blank: “Do you want to go to WrestleMania?” Through tears of joy, she said yes. Caffey relocated from her home in Port St. Lucie to Orlando, where she began intense training as a professional wrestler before fighting in her debut match in March in Sanford, Florida. As for wrestling matches with her brother, Caffey says: “I tell him, ‘Don’t mess with me now.’” @tiana.caffey (Instagram)

The AI Mastermind: AMY STAPLETON

During the pandemic, Amy Stapleton watched her mother’s health rapidly decline. Her mom was in assisted living at the time and subject to the strict visitor regulations that had been put in place during the early days of COVID. “My sister would visit her every day, and then she wasn’t allowed to see her anymore,” recalls Stapleton, 63. She knew her mom was lonely from the isolation and that it was contributing to her declining health, and she felt helpless to do anything about it. Sadly, just as COVID restrictions began to ease up, her mom passed away. Heartbroken, Stapleton was determined not to see other seniors suffer the same way her mother had. That’s what led her to create Chatables, a startup that uses artificial intelligence to provide seniors which someone to chat with during times of loneliness. “I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of people talking to computers,” says Stapleton, whose path to AI development was unexpected. After earning a PhD in German literature in 1990, Stapleton worked as a translator for SAP, a software solutions company in Germany. Her boss thought she would make a good programmer and moved her into coding. She moved back to the States in 1996 to work for IBM, and in 2001, she was recruited by NASA as a software manager. When she retired from NASA in 2016, she moved to Stuart

and began doing freelance work voicing applications for Alexa. “People my age working in technology have had a winding path to get here,” she says. Stapleton describes Chatables as a “virtual companion for adults.” Seniors choose from a variety of different topics and then converse in a three-way conversation with AI characters. Stapleton has built a library of topics she calls “Armchair Outings,” which feature topics like world destinations, sports, brain training, history, and gardening, among others. In March 2022, she presented the idea for Chatables at an AARP pitch competition and was invited to join their mentorship programs and collaborate with other entrepreneurs who are creating solutions for the over-50 marketplace. As Stapleton continues to develop Chatables, she is also exploring other uses for the technology. She recently connected with a university in Canada that is using AI and avatars to create virtual memory experiences that recreate a person’s past for use in something called “reminiscence therapy” to improve the general well-being of older patients. Says Stapleton: “I would love to see this technology folded into something else.” chatables.com

The Rising Star: LAURA GULEY

When Laura Guley was a kid, she wanted to be a cat. Not the kind that meows but the kind that sings and dances in the Broadway musical. “When I was in the seventh grade, I went to see Cats and thought, ‘You get to be a cat on stage?!’ I fell in love with the idea,” says Guley, now 24. That summer, the Jupiter resident began her career in musical theater, enrolling in the Conservatory at Maltz Jupiter Theatre. The Maltz soon became her second home, and Guley continued honing her dancing and acting skills there and was cast in professional shows including A Chorus Line and The Wiz. After graduating from Dreyfoos School of the Arts in 2016, she earned a degree in musical theater from Penn State University in 2020 and soon landed her first contract with The Lexington Theatre Company in Kentucky. She was hired for the 2022 season at Tuachan Center for the Arts in Utah as a cast member of three shows: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Mary Poppins, and Wonderland. Last September, she got a huge break when she joined the national tour of Tootsie. As an understudy for the lead role of Sandy, she had the chance to star in the show when it came to the Kravis Center in February 2023 after the main actress cast in the role became ill. With her parents in the audience cheering her on, she showed off her acting chops playing a character she says was made for her. “It’s a role where I could really be myself and let my kooky side out,” she says. Now that the Tootsie tour is over, Guley has her sights set on another big move. “I’ve been fortunate to work consistently, so I haven’t really had a home yet,” she says. “I’d like to get to New York.” lauraguley.com

The Visual Storyteller: SAMI KATTAN

Sami Kattan credits a whale shark with changing his life. In 2012, on a dive trip off the north shore of Utila, Honduras, Kattan saw a 40-foot whale shark and was instantly enamored with the creature. With his brother’s GoPro, he filmed the shark underwater, returning home to Jupiter with amazing video and stories of his new experiences under the sea. When a good friend saw the footage, he realized Kattan had a passion and talent and gifted him with a GoPro of his own. “That camera became my best friend,” says Kattan, 33. He started traveling to wherever he could find whale sharks, captured them on video, and collected his footage into a documentary, Beneath the Surface, which was accepted into the Miami Beneath the Waves Film Festival in 2014. Kattan’s video talents were quickly tapped by Beneath the Waves, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing the conservation and scientific knowledge of sharks, who hired him as director of media. As part of the Beneath the Waves team, Kattan followed sharks, documenting the world of these magnificent and often endangered creatures. His work has been featured on National Geographic, Discovery Channel, and Shark Week. On a recent trip to the Bahamas, the sharks he was filming led his crew to the discovery of the largest seagrass meadow in the Bahamas. “Who better to teach us about the ocean than those who live in it?” says Kattan, who describes himself as a storyteller. After leaving Beneath the Waves this past May, Kattan now focuses on creating videos for various nonprofit organizations through his own Jupiter-based video production company, Nomad Creative, which he founded in 2016. Says Kattan: “I love getting to tell the stories of people who are working to make the world a better place.” nomadcreative.org ❖

FLIGHT of F

rom the highway in the sky to a brick-and-mortar bake shop, Port St. Lucie resident Becks Euvin has made a major career pivot. When the former flight attendant worked in operations for a private jet company, she would gift luxury dessert boxes filled with a variety of home-baked goodies featuring career and hobby themes to passengers and aircraft owners—and they loved them. “The reaction was always great,” she recalls. “Everyone loves something personalized that’s made just for them, so it was a nice touch that made our passengers feel valued.” Last November, Euvin left her full-time aviation job to pursue her dream of owning a bakery. In April, she opened Becks Dessert Shop in downtown Stuart. Decorated with a minimalist touch and exuding a vibe of joy, the shop is filled with treats made by Euvin, including best sellers like her themed dessert boxes, which range from 6 to 22 pieces, pop tarts (top flavors are lemon lavender and fruit loop), and decorated cookies. Euvin’s skills as both a baker and a creative artist allow her to create the perfect treats for her customers. She has been drawing since she was a little girl and brings an artistic flair to the kitchen. “A lot of times, people have ideas of the desserts and cookies they want but don’t know how to translate that to a clean look,” she says. “I start with their ideas and minimize everything to create a very clean and chic result.”

DELIGHT

THE JUPITER GRILL ADVANCES WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A STEAK HOUSE WITH A MENU THAT’S EQUAL PARTS STEAK AND SEAFOOD AND A NONTRADITIONAL LIGHT AND BRIGHT INTERIOR DESIGN

When Harbourside Place announced a steak house was coming to the site, locals expected a head turner, both in menu and ambience. And when The Jupiter Grill opened in early May, they weren’t disappointed.

Stepping into the 8,000-square-foot space, diners are greeted not by typical steak house decor of dark hues and wood but by a unique look that reflects the restaurant’s surroundings. The team allowed the waterfront destination to inspire the color palette and design scheme, with details like a mermaid-scaled interior bar. “While there are warm and rich elements to our decor, there are also lighter, more coastal chic environmental touches,” says Dave Magrogan, CEO and founder of Gulfstream Hospitality. “The town of Jupiter is both refined and casual, and we wanted The Jupiter Grill to reflect that image.” Aside from the main dining room and lounge area, there is also an outdoor bar with seating areas that can be sectioned off for private dining by request. “While you are dining inside the restaurant, you still feel connected to the outdoor open air and water present at Harbourside,” says Magrogan.

Tasked with building a menu that encapsulates both surf and turf was Chef Paul Niedermann, a Florida local who won Hell’s

Kitchen in 2011 and served as head chef at BLT Steak New York. “The menu is a journey of all my travels and experiences working across the country,” says Niedermann. “The inspiration really came from me walking the space and just taking in the water. I didn’t want to write a standard, boring, traditional steak house menu.” To that end, the menu features sustainable seafood like oysters and clams from the Sebastian Inlet, as well as partnerships with local fishermen for menu specials.

Of course, the steaks are obviously a big deal here, and The Jupiter Grill serves top-of-the-line traditional prime cuts. There’s the 18-ounce, 45-day dry-aged bone-in New York strip, a rosemary and fig crusted Heritage pork chop, and a 36-ounce Wagyu tomahawk. “Our love for steaks is just as important as our love for seafood,” says Magrogan.

Niedermann’s personal favorites on the menu are the dry-aged bone-in strip, the 22-ounce bone-in Cajun rib eye, and the lobster bucatini. A customer favorite, he notes, is the deviled egg flight, a classic appetizer prepared with blue crab, pickled jalapeño, bacon, truffle, and caviar. There’s also a raw bar menu with shrimp cocktail, fresh oysters and clams, jumbo crab, and spicy tuna poke. Non-seafood options include a Peruvian roasted chicken served with a blood orange salad and sweet potato purée, a Chinese five-spice duck breast, and braised short rib. Such a vast menu requires a robust wine menu, and The Jupiter Grill offers 140 top wine labels.

Desserts are the responsibility of Pastry Chef Rachel Pias, who serves favorites with a creative take. A coconut cake with salted raspberry caramel, graham crumbles, and white chocolate is designed to resemble a golf hole and aptly named the 19th Hole. The chocolate layer cake is dusted with 24-karat edible gold and a golden palm, and the bread pudding is made with Cap’n Crunch cereal and topped with smoked bacon and bourbon toffee sauce. 149 Soundings Ave., Jupiter, thejupitergrill.com ❖

MANAGEMENT & COMMERCIAL BANKING

When potential clients approach a BMO relationship manager, it’s often because their financial strategy is disjointed. They may have an investment adviser, an accountant, and an attorney, but they don’t have a cohesive plan.

“Our commercial banking and wealth management teams work close together to put our clients in a position for success on both business and personal sides,” says Shawn Oden, BMO Commercial Banking’s managing director and market leader, South Florida. “Oftentimes, people approach us for a specific transaction, such as a credit request. For us, it’s about taking a step back and asking questions about what you’re trying to accomplish both professionally and personally.”

BMO operational philosophy is geared toward providing leadership. Although it is a large, multinational bank, managers make decisions at the local level. “It starts with asking open-ended questions about the challenges people are facing,” says Joey Johnson, BMO Wealth Management’s managing director, Florida East. “We can learn

about your goals and help you make more informed decisions that positively impact your business plans and personal wealth.”

BMO holds events on the issues affecting clients. Recently, investment bankers explained trends in valuation multiples in mergers and acquisitions, followed by the wealth management team discussing how that could impact business succession plans and family wealth.

“Business owners tend to be laser-focused on their day-to-day operations,” Oden says. “These gatherings can help attendees come away with a better sense of how their decisions can affect their future.”

BMO’s purpose is “to boldly grow the good in business and life,” Oden and Johnson point out that leadership isn’t just about how they manage their teams. “It’s about taking a holistic approach to serving clients,” Johnson says. “It also means serving our communities and committing to sustainability. Ultimately, our approach allows us to be the leaders our clients need.”

PURIFICATION

The story of one of the world’s biggest air, water, and food purification companies located in Riviera Beach, Florida, grew from a love story.

Ron and Gail Fink grew up as friends in a small town in New Jersey. Ron started his career in the nuclear business—at Area 51 monitoring nuclear bomb testing for the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). He later went into the nuclear power industry in California while Gail became a fashion model on Seventh Avenue in New York while attending night classes.

Years later, they married in the New York area on a 100-ft. private yacht and had a 10-day August honeymoon driving across the country in a 1967 Firebird convertible (with no air conditioning). They lived in Pismo Beach, California, before moving to upstate New York for a new job and to start a family. Next the family moved to Florida with three young daughters to escape the snow and start a new business.

Thirty-eight years ago, they started RGF Environmental Group on their kitchen table. The company developed products that would purify air, water, and food without the use of chemicals using soft radiation. It now has more than 500 products and headquarters in Riviera Beach, with operations in 80 countries. The couple moved to Tequesta Country Club in 1983, were one of the first residents in Admirals Cove in 1986 where they still live.

MODERN MEDICINE

Dr. Ken Winnard is physician trained in internal medicine with a background as a hospitalist. During his time working in the hospital, he saw thousands of patients diagnosed with chronic disease, often with little education about how their health got to its current state or what to do next. This led Dr. Winnard to uncover his true passion—lifestyle medicine and prevention. He now serves patients in Jupiter and the surrounding communities at his preventative and aesthetic medicine practice, OneLife Health & Performance.

Dr. Winnard is an industry leader in the fields of peptide therapy, specialized intravenous (IV) therapy, amino acid therapy, vitamin therapy, hormone balancing and optimization, nutrition, and medical weight loss. He incorporates these modalities and more into each patient’s individualized care plan to help restore and even enhance the body’s metabolic and healing properties. He believes these tools give patients an edge to help find a new baseline of health, no matter where they are in their health journey.

Dr. Winnard has built a dedicated team of nurse practitioners, certified health coaches, and designated patient care coordinators to help follow each patient through their unique care plans. Dr. Winnard’s mission with OneLife Health & Performance is to help patients not just improve their lifespan, but also improve their healthspan.
