Dr. Elizabeth Valdés explores how self-love, prevention, and personalized care can transform your approach to health.
We’ve all heard the familiar saying when flying: “Secure your oxygen mask first, before assisting others.” While this is vital advice during air travel, it carries a powerful message for life beyond the plane. Too often, we find ourselves so consumed by the demands of daily life that we forget to prioritize the things that truly matter— whether that’s spending quality time with family, exercising, or simply taking time for ourselves. Health just isn’t about avoiding illness. It is about fostering well-being in every aspect of our lives: the physical, the mental, the emotional and the spiritual.
The world of healthcare is continuously evolving. The most productive approach
prioritizes prevention which addresses potential health issues before they become chronic diseases. Unfortunately, many people wait far too long before seeking medical attention. There are countless reasons for delaying care: “I don’t have time,” “It’s too expensive,” or “I feel fine.” But the reality is we all deserve to have our health regularly checked. At a minimum, an annual visit to a primary care physician should be a priority.
With 24/7 access to your physician and a smaller patient panel, concierge services offer personalized attention and greater flexibility. It ensures that your healthcare needs are met promptly and efficiently. Instead of waiting weeks or months to see your doctor, you have their personal cell phone number saved in your phone for any
#4
medical need that may arise while at home or travelling.
And if money is a factor, consider the long-term costs. While it might seem like you’re saving by skipping an appointment or avoiding a check-up, the reality is that untreated health issues can snowball into chronic conditions that are not only lifethreatening, but also incredibly expensive. So, ask yourself: how much are you truly saving by postponing care? If you’re feeling well, now is the perfect time to get evaluated! Prevention is always better than treatment, and the best time to address potential health concerns is when you’re in good health. Don’t wait for a crisis to force you to act—invest in your health today, so you can love yourself and others fully tomorrow.
With 27 years of distinguished service in Jupiter, Dr. Irma Lopez is honored to introduce Dr. Elizabeth Valdés to our community. Whether you seek to preserve your health, manage ongoing conditions, or explore new ways to embrace vitality, Dr. Valdés is here to provide compassionate support and guidance. Dr. Valdés is currently welcoming new patients, and we’re thrilled to have her expertise enrich the exceptional care we offer.

For 50 years, First Florida Construction has transformed the finest luxury home designs into reality throughout Palm Beach and Martin Counties. Unparalleled craftsmanship, impeccable customer service and an exceptional attention to detail are the foundations of our reputation.
There’s just something about the South. I used to imagine myself one day sitting on my front porch under the trees, drinking lemonade and enjoying the warm weather, friendly vibes, and relaxed pace of life. Of course, we live in Florida, which is technically the farthest south you can really get in the United States. But our amazing state isn’t truly “the South,” know what I mean?
Even so, that doesn’t mean there is no Southern flavor in the area. There’s Southern charm aplenty if you know where to look, and this issue is devoted to all things Southern comfort. From where to get the best crawfish to how to make the perfect Sazerac, February is all about letting your Southern soul shine.
Get the lowdown on the best Southern-inspired restaurants and boutiques, where to catch live country music, upcoming events not to miss (including a rodeo next month), and more in “Truth South,” which starts on page 68. And turn to page 62 for the best Southern cocktail recipes including the mint julep, Ramos gin fizz, milk punch, and good old-fashioned (spiked) sweet tea.
In our Character profile on page 42, we feature Hank Morrison, a North Carolina native who moved to Florida right after he graduated from high school to expand his family’s restaurant business. At just 20 years old, Hank now runs Nana Morrison’s Soul Food in Port St. Lucie, which serves a variety of traditional Southern dishes like fried chicken, smothered pork chops, collard greens, yams, black-eyed peas, ribs, and sweet potatoe pie. All so delicious.
Finally, for this month’s fashion feature, we headed to the flower farm at White Trail Club in Jupiter, the perfect backdrop of barns, hay bales, bunnies, and blooms. See all the incredible looks our team put together in “Sugar Magnolia,” beginning on page 74.
Pour yourself a lemonade, sit back, and enjoy the issue!
Peace and blessings,
Michelle Lee Ribeiro Editor in Chief

Welcome to the February issue of Jupiter Magazine! I always look forward to sitting down and reading what our editorial team has put together, and this month is no different. This issue’s theme, Southern Comfort, brings me back to when I was 9 years old and my family was moving to Florida from just outside New York City. We relocated to a small town on the west coast of the state, in the Crystal River/Lecanto area, about an hour north of Tampa.
The change was dramatic. We were moving from the suburbs of a big city to a 7-acre property in Pine Ridge Estates—an equine community with trails, a stable, and a riding ring. My father bought four horses, which stayed on our property, as well as a rabbit and two dogs. As the initial shock wore off, we all settled into a simpler way of life in our new small town, where everyone knew everyone. Even now, I miss the quietude of those years.
My new home had so many things to teach me. I’d never heard of grits or biscuits and gravy before, but these were on the menu at every diner in town, billed as “Southern comfort foods,” which I grew to appreciate. The first day I rode the bus to school, everyone was asking me if I was a “Yankee,” and at my tender age, I had no idea what they were talking about (though I learned quickly after reading about the Civil War).
At the time (this was the 1980s), there weren’t many Northerners around, and our community wasn’t a place that seasonal residents really even visited. Most of my friends were born in town, and as I learned little things from them about Southern life—like how to make homemade biscuits— I fell in love with my new home.
I have so many fond memories of riding my palomino horse, Sundown, and of lots of time spent on the river waterskiing, wakeboarding, and swimming with the manatees. (Fun fact: Crystal River earned the nickname “Home of the Manatee” when Jacques Cousteau visited in 1972 to film his TV special The Forgotten Mermaids.)
So many things in Florida have changed since I was a kid. I moved to Jupiter 15 years ago, and back then it had the reputation of being a “sleepy town.” What a long way we have come! I absolutely love being a Jupiter resident.
I also love being the publisher of Jupiter Magazine. And as I mention every month, we offer lots of different advertising opportunities in special sections throughout the year, including the Luxury Homes Real Estate Guide, the Home Resource Guide, and the Flavor Dining Guide. If any of these (or other) sections might help you with your marketing needs, please reach out to me.
I look forward to seeing many of you at local events around town, and remember—if you haven’t already, sign up for our Insider’s Guide weekly digital newsletter at jupitermag.com Have a great February!

Before you hire a divorce lawyer for a complex case you should ask:
• How many cases involving over one billion dollars have you taken to trial and what are the names of those cases?
• How many cases involving over one hundred million dollars have you taken to trial and what are the names of those cases?
• How many cases have you taken to trial that lasted longer than ten trial days and what are the names of those cases?
• How many cases have you taken to trial where there was litigation simultaneously in Florida and also in other states or foreign countries?
• Does your firm have 35 attorneys with offices in Manhattan, Palm Beach and Miami, to staff large complex cases?
The lawyers at RFB+Fisher Potter Hodas are ready to answer all of these questions.

LOCAL ARTISTS TAKE THEIR TALENTS TO THE GREAT OUTDOORS NEXT MONTH FOR LIGHTHOUSE ARTCENTER’S TWELFTH ANNUAL
BY VALERIE STAGGS
Next month, get ready to spot a new species roaming in the wild at our local parks and beaches. Armed with blank canvases and backpacks full of supplies, they will be setting up easels in off-the-beaten-path locations, ready to capture the world around them in colorful strokes of paint. These talented painters are known as plein air artists.
Now in its twelfth year, Lighthouse ArtCenter’s Plein Air Festival welcomes artists from all over the world for a weeklong event to celebrate the art of plein air painting. The term refers to a technique that dates back to the nineteenth century, when Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir would venture outdoors to paint “en plein air.” This year’s festival takes place
March 2-8, all over Palm Beach and Martin counties.
The experience, says local artist Manon Sander, is like no other. “It’s a multisensory experience,” she says. “The sun is on your skin, and the birds are singing. It stirs emotions in you, and all of that goes into your painting.”
Sander, who resides in North Palm Beach, is one of this year’s returning artists, selected from more than 100 applicants to be part of the juried art show. Last year, a painting she did at Jupiter’s Pine Glades Natural Area won top honors in the “Best Local Hot Spot” category.
When the selected artists arrive in town, they are each given empty wall space in the Lighthouse ArtCenter gallery. As they create new paintings throughout the week, their works are added to their wall. “The festival is a really unique experience because the exhibition is evolving day by day,” says Lighthouse ArtCenter curator Anthony Record.
“We can paint anywhere in Palm Beach or Martin counties,” says Tequesta resident and artist Pamela Ayres, who has participated in the festival for the past five years.
“I look for strong shadow patterns and color. I have to have a connection to what I’m painting.” In past festivals, Ayres has chosen to set up her easel in places like Mounts Botanical Garden and Busch Wildlife Sanctuary, and she won third place in the professional division of the 2021
Paint Out Competition for her work Amelia Birdheart, which she painted at Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens.
Artists typically complete two or three paintings a day, which are framed and displayed on their wall throughout the week. Each of the 30 juried artists picks two pieces to be entered in the juried competition on Friday, March 7. More than $10,000 will be awarded—the grand prize, first, second, and third place, and honorable mentions. The completed works are also available to purchase throughout the week. For more information and the full festival schedule, visit lighthousearts.org/pleinair-2025. ❖

When it comes to seafood, local is
best, says aquaculture biologist Nicolette Mariano, CEO and founder of Treasure Coast Shellfish. The concept, however, extends far beyond the kitchen, as Mariano proves with her nearly 7-acre sustainable oyster farm located in the Indian River Lagoon between the Sebastian Inlet and Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge. Mariano’s farm supplies oysters to local restaurants including Stage Kitchen & Bar in Palm Beach Gardens, The Jupiter Grill, and Crabby’s Oyster Bar in Jensen Beach. The oysters can also be purchased online at treasurecoastshellfish.com for local pickup and at The Original Indian River Seafood Market in Sebastian. We caught up with the Martin County native to learn more about oyster farming.
What makes your location the perfect spot for an oyster farm?
We get tidal flushing twice a day from the Atlantic. It’s in a subtidal area, so the oysters aren’t exposed during low tide.
Does your farm help the Indian River Lagoon in any way?
Yes—an adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day, removing nitrates and phosphates, and we planted 850,000 oysters in 2024.
Is the farm attracting other marine life?
Indian River Lagoon is one of the most biodiverse estuaries in North America, and up until two years ago, I had never seen a live bay scallop there. Now they are settling on our nursery gear at the dock, the rocks on the farm, and in cages. We’re also seeing peppermint shrimp, stone crab, blue crab, and spiny lobster. The babies would use the seagrass to hide, but with such a loss of seagrass in the lagoon, they’re now using the farm as a habitat instead.
Do the oysters face any predators in the lagoon?
When crabs get into seed bags, they will eat them like corn chips. Or if a bag opens and a bunch of baby oysters pour out, toothed fish such as sheepshead, puffer fish, and stingrays will eat them. Also, barnacles are reproducing quicker than rabbits and can outcompete oysters for food (both feed on algae), especially during dry seasons or drought, when we aren’t getting rain and we’re not getting a lot of good algae blooms.
How does location and climate affect your harvest?
Oysters are like wine grapes in that flavor profile depends on growing area and season, even among the same species of oyster. During the summer, they’re briny all the way through. When it gets cooler, they taste briny up front with a sweeter, melon-like finish.
What’s your favorite way to eat oysters?
Raw with nothing on them because you get to taste the difference in oysters that way. I feel they pair well with sturgeon caviar, and I love a good oyster Rockefeller or oyster stew. Oysters are a great source of Vitamin D, iron, magnesium, and zinc. ❖
TWENTY-YEAR-OLD HANK MORRISON MOVED TO PORT ST. LUCIE TO BRING HIS FAMILY’S CHARLOTTE-BASED SOUL FOOD RESTAURANT TO FLORIDA
BY VALERIE STAGGS
Lunchtime at Nana Morrison’s Soul Food in Port St. Lucie is quite the bustling scene. Hungry diners stream though the doors, mouths watering at the aroma of fried chicken wafting from the kitchen. In their midst, owner Hank Morrison deftly floats from the cash register to the prep line to the dining room, ensuring that the restaurant’s signature food goes from kitchen to customers’ plates without a hitch. The ease with which Morrison runs Nana’s is a skill many restaurant owners spend decades trying to master. At just 20 years old, Morrison already has it down pat.
Morrison grew up in the restaurant business, the son of Kiana and Shawn, who opened the original Nana Morrison’s Soul Food in Charlotte, North Carolina in 2013. The menu is fashioned after the authentic Southern cooking that Morrison’s great-grandmother (“Nana”) was known for— staples like fried chicken, smothered pork chops, barbecue ribs, collard greens, yams, black-eyed peas, and mac and cheese. In North Carolina, Morrison and his three siblings learned everything about the restaurant biz, from processing payroll to prepping the food to understanding the nuances
of employee management. “I remember standing on a stool at the register when I was 7,” recalls Morrison, who now oversees a staff of 13 at the Nana’s in Port St. Lucie. “Our parents raised us to be bosses.”
As they grew up, the Morrison kids helped their parents expand the brand. Morrison’s older brother, Shawn, 26, took over running the flagship location in Charlotte, and the family opened a second restaurant in Charlotte, which is run by Morrison’s 18-yearold sister, Gabriella.
(The youngest Morrison sibling, Aaron, is still in high school and hasn’t
yet decided whether he will join the family business.)
When it came time for the family to expand their soul food empire to Florida, Hank made the move to the Sunshine State in 2023 to run the Port St. Lucie location. He opened it just six months after graduating from high school.
The restaurant’s location in Tradition, Morrison says, is in the perfect spot for attracting the influx of new residents moving to the community: “We see new customers coming in every day.” Watching people discover the authentic Southern recipes his family has passed down through generations is the most rewarding part of his day. “The best part is when people eat the product and you see a smile on their faces,” he says.
Morrison is busier than most 20-yearolds and hasn’t had much time to explore his new home state, but he wouldn’t have it any other way. “What I’m doing with my life is different than most young people,” he says. “I’m trying to set myself
up for the future.” The end goal for the family is to continue to expand the Nana Morrison’s brand. A fourth location opened in Cary, North Carolina in December, and a fifth is slated to open in Indian Land, South Carolina this month. Personally, Morrison hopes to open more restaurants in Florida. “I want to see a Nana Morrison’s Soul Food on every corner,” he says. nanamorrisonssoulfood.com ❖

Make the most of pompano season with tips for catching (and cooking) these tasty but pricey fish yourself
BY GEORGE LABONTE
Local seafood is just one of the many perks enjoyed by Floridians, and from a culinary standpoint, there are a few local fish that stand out during the height of our season. One selection that always sits near the top of that list? The Florida pompano.
The pompano has established elite status among seafood lovers in our area. The high price—upwards of $35 per pound for a whole fish— has made enjoying a dinner of fresh pompano too cost-prohibitive for most to enjoy regularly. One notable exception to this dilemma is the fact that fresh pompano is readily available to anyone armed with a light spinning rod willing to take a walk on the beach.
From January to April, Florida’s east coast beaches are teeming with migratory pompano traveling north and south with the changing weather. Commonly caught by anglers on boats, these fish are just as accessible from shore (if done right). The ability to walk up a few for dinner transforms the Florida pompano from exclusive to every man’s fare.
A glance at the shoreline during low tide reveals the likeliest spots to fish. Finding the deeper-cut “trough” that runs parallel to shore is easiest
when it’s not covered by water. Just a few steps from dry land, these deep trenches provide pompano a safe spot to cruise the shore waiting for the tumbling backwash to expose sand fleas and crabs in the surf. Locate these trough lines at low water and return to fish at high tide. Be sure to pick a calm day with an offshore wind. For tackle, you won’t need anything too fancy. A light, 8- to 12-pound spinning outfit along with a handful of brightly colored goofy jigs and a small spool of 20- to 30-pound mono leader will get you in the game. Attach the main line from your reel to a 24-inch length of the mono leader with a line-to-line connection (a double uni or Albright knot are reliable
connections for this), then tie a loop knot to your goofy jig (a ¼- to ½-ounce jig, depending on conditions; rougher water requires a bit more weight to get the jig to the bottom). Working the jig slowly through the deeper trough, parallel to shore and along the bottom, will produce bites all winter. ❖
A perfect Florida-style recipe to complement your catch at its freshest is very simple. Light a charcoal fire before you begin prepping the fish (gas grill is okay). Rub the fileted pompano with olive oil and season both sides with Montreal chicken seasoning. In a saucepan, melt one stick of butter, add the juice of five Key limes, then slowly stir in a few spoonfuls of sugar until the butter tastes like sweet lime. Place fish on the grill, flipping only once (just a couple of minutes per side.) Plate and pour melted butter mixture over fish.
Hobe Sound resident George LaBonte is a professional captain and a world-class angler who has run a successful local charter fishing operation for 40 years. He was the host of a pair of widely acclaimed boating-related TV shows that aired nationally for five years, as well as a popular radio show on ESPN for 20 years. MONTAGE PALMETTO OFFERS A CLASSIC SOUTHERN RETREAT AMID A NATURAL WONDERLAND
BY JANE E. ENOS
Palmetto Bluff, a thriving 20,000acre residential and recreational preserve, rests within the solitude of South Carolina’s Lowcountry, just west of Hilton Head Island. Within this vibrant expanse sits a halcyon escape: Montage Palmetto Bluff. If you arrive by car, expect about a 5-mile jaunt in from the main road. Though long, it’s a drive to savor, as the ecosystem is abuzz. Redtailed hawks and bald eagles soar above, and eastern fox squirrels scurry across fecund ground. And that’s just the beginning as far as wildlife goes.
Upon first glance—and all others, for that matter—the property oozes an august Southern charm. While the resort (called the Inn at Palmetto Bluff before Montage’s acquisition) was constructed
within the last 20 years, its coastal Georgian architecture seamlessly melds with its surrounds, including the Spanish moss that dangles from the many spidery live oaks on-site. The ambience beckons languid days and glasses of lemonade, which you can sip each afternoon on the main building’s porch.
The best way to absorb the thousands of acres of lush maritime forest, miles of paved trails, and contiguous residential neighborhoods and villages is by bicycle. These are complimentary for guests of the resort and available for pickup just a short walk away at the Carriage House in Wilson Village.
There are two villages to explore at Palmetto Bluff: Wilson and Moreland. The first draws its name from Marion and Richard T. Wilson Jr. and the ruins of their winter estate, a four-story manse completed in 1915. Although the home caught fire in 1926, the bases of its massive pillars and steps remain and decorate what is now called the Wilson Village Green, a great place to take in views of the May River and a popular site for weddings. There are dining options and shops to explore within both Wilson and
Moreland. Those venturing to the latter won’t want to miss the first and largest of the on-property tree houses, which occupies five stories and presents amazing mileslong vistas.
Montage Palmetto Bluff offers guest rooms, suites, spacious cottages, and even residences, all of which are well appointed and make good on the brand’s commitment to impeccable hospitality. And these accommodations uphold the remainder of the property’s aesthetic too. Design is stately yet comfortable, elegant but not extravagant.
The resort is rich in amenities, making it a marvelous spot for families or those traveling alone. Freshwater and saltwater fishing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and boating are all options. If you prefer land activities, book a tennis or pickleball experience or enjoy a game of bocce. Croquet, anyone? There’s a court for that too. If you’re looking for links, play a round at the 7,171-yard May River Golf Course (a Jack Nicklaus Signature Course) or take aim at The Palmetto Bluff Shooting Club, where National Sporting Clays Association–certified instructors share their expertise. For more leisurely living, enjoy the multiple pools on property or indulge in a day of relaxation at Spa Montage, where a full complement of services awaits.
In addition to its amenities, Montage Palmetto Bluff offers a diverse and
ever-changing lineup of enrichment programs. Its Well Living series operates from a theme that varies month to month. For example, last April, Well Living focused on honoring Earth Day, giving guests multiple opportunities to interact with the local environment as well as the resort’s resident naturalist, Cassie Beato. Activities included a nature walk and inland waterway ecotour, where Beato dropped some serious knowledge about the area’s mixture of flora and fauna, including the May River’s protected oyster population. In July, Well Living activities centered on celebrating the summer in Lowcountry and incorporated Independence Day–related events, a nature-based scavenger hunt, and the flavors of the South. August’s programming paid homage to artists who reflect the landscape and cultures of the region.
A day of activity at Palmetto Bluff generates a healthy appetite. For lunch, Fore & Aft serves Mexican-style fare along with pristine views of inland waterways.
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are available at Octagon, which is located inside the main building and specializes in seasonally inspired cuisine accented by flavors of the Carolinas. Another must-visit is The River House in Wilson Village— an upscale option offering an array of Southern-style surf and turf. After dinner, enjoy a nightcap downstairs at Hush, an intimate haunt with a speakeasy vibe. And what better place to close an afternoon in Lowcountry than around a firepit with s’mores? This tradition— one of many at the resort—presents the perfect chance to relive the day’s discoveries and discuss happenings on the horizon. montage.com ❖

WHEN IT COMES TO LIBATIONS, THE SOUTH HAS A LEGACY AS RICH AS ITS CULTURE. FROM THE REFRESHING SWIRLS OF SWEET TEA TO THE CRISP ZEST OF A CLASSIC MINT JULEP, SOUTHERN COCKTAILS ARE STEEPED IN HISTORY, HOSPITALITY, AND RESILIENCE. HERE ARE FIVE MUST-KNOW COCKTAILS THAT EMBODY THE SPIRIT, HISTORY, AND FLAVOR OF THE SOUTH.
BY JULES ARON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GYORGY PAPP
Born from the jazzinfused streets of New Orleans, the Sazerac is one of the most beloved drinks in the canon of Southern classics. Believed to date back to the 1850s, it combines a peppery rye whiskey (or sometimes cognac), sugar, a dash of spiced bitters, and a rinse of absinthe. The drink’s name pays homage to the Sazerac de Forge et Fils Cognac, which was originally used in its creation. The Sazerac not only represents the blending of cultures found in New Orleans (French, Spanish, African, Creole), but it also embodies the city’s penchant for celebration.
2 oz. rye ½ oz. simple syrup (1-to-1 sugar and water) 2 dashes Peychaud’s bitters 1 barspoon absinthe Lemon peel, for garnish
Add a dash of absinthe to a rocks glass and swirl to coat. Discard the liquid. In a mixing glass, add simple syrup, rye, bitters, and ice. Stir well, then strain into the prepared glass. Garnish with an expressed lemon peel.
Dating back to the Colonial era, milk punch became popular in Southern households by the eighteenth century, back when both milk and brandy were thought to have powerful medicinal properties. Arnaud’s French 75, in the French Quarter of New Orleans, has had milk punch on its menu since the 1930s. With variations including rum, brandy, or whiskey combined with milk, sugar, and spices, milk punch is enjoyed as both a breakfast drink and a post-dinner indulgence. The time-honored recipe has seen its share of riffs and contemporary twists, constantly bringing new life to an old tradition.
2 oz. milk
2 oz. cream
2 oz. bourbon whiskey or brandy
1 oz. simple syrup
2 dashes pure vanilla extract
Ground nutmeg, for garnish
«
Combine the first four ingredients over ice and shake vigorously. Strain into glass (no ice) and garnish with a dusting of nutmeg.
A cornerstone of Southern culture, sweet tea is more than just a beverage—it’s a social ritual. Its origins date back to the nineteenth century, with variations existing across the South. Spiked sweet tea perfectly embodies the Southern ethos of hospitality and conviviality, making it a staple at gatherings. Its familiar flavors evoke feelings of home and warmth, proving that sometimes the best cocktails are those that honor simplicity and tradition. Whether you prefer the nonalcoholic classic or a boozy counterpart, serve it over crushed ice with lots of lemon and a sprig of mint for the ultimate Southern refresher.
3 oz. strong brewed black tea, cooled ½ oz. simple syrup ½ oz. freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 ½ oz. Southern Comfort (optional)
«
Build all ingredients in a tall glass with fresh ice. Stir well and enjoy.
Perhaps no cocktail is as synonymous with the Southern experience as the mint julep. The origins of the mint julep trace back to the early eighteenth century, and it has been the official drink of the Kentucky Derby since 1939 (and associated with the Derby as far back as 1875). This concoction of bourbon, fresh mint, sugar, and crushed ice speaks to the leisurely elegance of Southern hospitality. Served in a silver or pewter cup frosted with condensation, its refreshing nature makes the mint julep a popular choice in the hot South.
2 oz. bourbon
½ oz. simple syrup (try blackberry or blueberry for additional flavor) 10 fresh mint sprigs (plus more for garnish)
Powdered sugar (optional)
In a julep tin, add the mint and gently muddle. Fill a silver or pewter cup with crushed ice until there is a small mound above the top rim, pour the bourbon followed by the simple syrup, and top with additional crushed ice. Garnish with a mint sprig and a sprinkle of powdered sugar.
The Ramos gin fizz stands out for its delicate mix of flavors and silky mouthfeel. Created in 1888 by Henry C. Ramos at his New Orleans bar, Imperial Cabinet Saloon, the Ramos gin fizz is a whimsical cocktail that combines gin, cream, citrus, egg white, and orange flower water. Its uniquely frothy and creamy texture gave it a special place in mixology history, and the demand for it was so intense that Ramos employed a team of “shakers” to emulsify the drink, one by one, especially during Mardi Gras season.
2 oz. gin
1 oz. simple syrup (try raspberry or hibiscus for a pink hue)
1 oz. heavy cream ½ oz. lemon juice
½ oz. lime juice
1 egg white 6 drops orange flower water
2 oz. club soda
Combine all ingredients except club soda in a mixing tin and dry-shake. Add 3-4 ice cubes to the tin and shake again until nearly dissolved. Double-strain into a Collins glass and top with club soda, allowing the foam to rise above the lip of the glass. «
EMBRACE THE STYLE, FLAVORS, AND CULTURAL DELIGHTS OF THE AMERICAN SOUTH WITHOUT STEPPING FOOT OUTSIDE THE SUNSHINE STATE
BY KERRY SHORR
Despite being the southernmost state in the continental United States with over 11 million acres of wetlands, the second-largest alligator population next to Louisiana, and top-tier college football teams, Florida isn’t widely considered a part of the “true South.” Unlike other Southern states like Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Texas, and the Carolinas, Florida is more of a cultural melting pot that is influenced by both the North and the South, as well as the Caribbean and Latin America. But there is much Southern flavor to be found here if you know where to look. Here’s where to soak up some serious Southern comfort.
Go South for happy hour by sipping on a classic Southern cocktail. Turn to page 62 for five iconic recipes.
It’s customary for Southern moms and grandmoms to pass on their time-honored recipes—just ask acclaimed Chef Lindsay Autry of Honeybelle. A North Carolina native, Autry serves delicious comfort food at her restaurant at PGA National Resort, pulling from her grandmother’s recipes that she savored during childhood. Some Southern standouts at Honeybelle include Autry’s fried chicken served with hot honey and corn bread, sweet corn soup with butter-poached crawfish, and tasty breakfast honey buns with tangerine marmalade and mascarpone glaze. For a slice of citrus heaven, try the Honeybelle Pie, made with lemon and tangerine juice and Honeybell oranges and layered on a sea salt and saltine cracker crust with a dollop of whipped cream. honeybellepbg.com
Florida may be more known for fresh seafood than hearty soul food, but there are still plenty of places to indulge in tasty barbecue, Southern fried chicken, or a slice of silky sweet potato pie.
crawfish with spicy garlic sauce crafted from a recipe of fresh garlic, Old Bay, and Crystal hot sauce (shown on page 69), or traditional jambalaya made to order. Savor an après-dinner drink
Crawdaddy’s is a mudbug lover’s dream. Once you get past the appearance of a crawfish and give it a try, you’ll no doubt understand why Southerners are so smitten with these delicious crustaceans, which taste sort of like a mix of shrimp and crab. Crawdaddy’s proprietors Mark Kren and his late brother John, who grew up in Baton Rouge, launched the long-established Cajun-Creole restaurant 26 years ago with flavorful dishes they enjoyed at their family table growing up. Try a bowl of
at the alfresco bar where local bands play genres like classic Delta blues and zydeco daily. crawdaddysjensenbeach.com
VOODOO BAYOU, Palm Beach Gardens
Teleport your taste buds to New Orleans at Voodoo Bayou Southern Cajun Kitchen, where you can savor classic Cajun and Creole dishes like fried green tomatoes, wood-fired oysters, gator tail, and shrimp and crawfish étouffée. The restaurant in Downtown at the Gardens also serves Crescent City spirits and cocktails, including the iconic Sazerac made with rye whiskey, absinthe, sugar, and bitters and garnished with a lemon peel. The restaurant hosts local bands including the 2nd Line Brass Trio, which plays every Sunday during brunch. voodoobayou.com
SACRED GROUNDS CORNER CAFÉ, Fort Pierce
When Georgia natives Telisa and Rick Womack moved to Fort Pierce and opened Sacred Grounds Corner Café in 2022, their plan was to serve top-notch breakfast foods and coffee. As the café’s popularity grew, so did the menu that now offers hearty lunch and dinner fare like deep-fried Reuben sandwiches, country-fried steak, and Telisa’s grandmother’s meatloaf, a 2024 Golden Fork Award winner. Stop by and grab a colorful tin of Jittery Joe’s Coffee from Athens, Georgia or one of the restaurant’s cute “Our Grits Are Kissed with Love” T-shirts. thesacredgroundscornercafe.com
Chef and restaurateur Tommy Nevill found his passion for Texas-style barbecue after touring more than 200 smokehouses in the Lone Star State. At his Palm Beach Gardens restaurant, NEVS Barbecue, he prepares grilled delicacies including baby back ribs, pulled pork, and fork-tender USDA Prime brisket. On Fridays, he serves up creative specials like NEVS McRib and the Brisket Hot Pocket made with homemade puff pastry stuffed with brisket burnt ends, red peppers, onions, and homemade barbecue sauce. Save room for a slice of mixed berry cobbler or crème anglaise bread pudding topped with salted caramel—you won’t regret it! nevsbarbecue.com
The Morrison family started their soul food empire in Charlotte, North Carolina, serving up staples like fried fish, smothered pork chops, collard greens, and black-eyed peas. Now they have brought the concept to Florida, with a Port St. Lucie location that’s run by 20-year-old Hank Morrison. Rotating specials throughout the week include bourbon chicken, meatloaf, and
jerk chicken wings, while house-made desserts like banana pudding, sweet potato pie, and peach cobbler are simply irresistible. To wash it all down, there’s sweet tea, of course, and even Kool-Aid. (Read more about Nana Morrison’s and Hank on page 42.) nanamorrisonssoulfood.com
For dessert lovers, there’s no sweeter spot than Southern Belle Cakery. The bakery, nestled discreetly along U.S. Highway 1 in North Palm Beach, is the brainchild of Jamie Fago, a self-taught baker who prepares everything on-site. The shop stocks various cakes, cupcakes, and cookies, plus popular special treats like the Sissy Cake, a vanilla-almond Bundt cake topped with powdered sugar named after Fago’s late, Mississippi-born great-grandmother. This month, she will add Mardi Gras King Cakes to the menu, which can be ordered with or without a plastic baby tucked inside. sbcakery.com
Country cowgirl or Southern belle? Here’s how to pull off whichever vibe suits you best.
We asked Jupiter resident MC Callahan-Young to go back to her roots and talk everything Southern belle style
BY MICHELLE LEE RIBEIRO
MC Callahan-Young spent 11 years in Nashville, where she hosted the hugely popular SiriusXM radio program The Storme Warren Show. Her style at that time, she says, was more Southern rock than Southern belle. But before Nashville, there was Alabama, where she grew up in the rural town of Fairhope—“the cutest little Hallmark town on the Mobile Bay,” as she describes it. Today, CallahanYoung lives in Jupiter with her hubby, country singer Ricky Young, and their two young children, 2-year-old Millie and 6-month-old Callahan. But back in the day, this Southern beauty says she had the belle style down! We asked her to help us sort through all the ruffles and pleasantries and learn just what makes a belle a belle.
Is there a celebrity you would say epitomizes the style?
What three words would you use to describe Southern belle style?
Feminine, flirty, never dull—that’s one extra word because Southern belles are naturally a little extra!
Reese Witherspoon. She even started Draper James, a clothing store in Nashville, where she was raised. I’d say it’s the go-to spot for all things Southern charm.
Name one fashion item or accessory that every Southern belle should own. The perfect white sundress. Whether it’s eyelet, linen, lace, embroidered, or a simple nap dress, a white sundress with a pair of oversized sunglasses makes for a classic yet chic Southern look.
URBAN COWGIRL
Any advice for Floridians trying to pull off the look?
Coastal Southern belle is easy to achieve! A dress with a puff sleeve is very feminine and Southern, while a palm print or beachy floral will add a bit of coastal flare. Farm Rio is my favorite brand for this vibe.
Are there any local boutiques you love that sell looks that fit the aesthetic?
SAND by Lola Dré has so many options with really feminine styles and details. It may be unintentional, but there is a lot of Southern charm throughout the boutique.
What’s one thing a true Southern belle never leaves home without?
A smile. You can’t say “bless your heart” without following it with a big ole Southern belle smile.
Cowboy/girl fashion is having a yeehaw moment thanks to television dramas like Yellowstone and country music dominating the charts. If that’s your fashion vibe, head over to J.C. Western Wear. Florida’s oldest Western store with locations in Jupiter and West Palm Beach. J.C. Western is filled with rancher-inspired gear like brimmed hats, embroidered shirts, denim, bolo ties, cowboy boots, and even chaps. (jcwesternwear.com)
In downtown Stuart, multi-brand retailer April Daze carries an assortment of rodeo-inspired styles and accessories including boots, belt buckles, trucker hats, and purses designed by Magnolia Pearl, ARiderGirl, Johnny Was, and others. Shop owner April Hope is a Southern girl at heart who lived in Charleston before opening her boutique in 1999. (aprildazeboutiquefl.com)
From live music to line dancing to rodeos, there’s plenty of country fun to be had in South Florida
Every decent Southerner at least knows how to two-step. And if you don’t, no worries—you can master it at Fred Astaire Dance Studios (in Jupiter, Stuart, or Port Saint Lucie). Once you’ve got the basics down, head over to Renegades Country Bar & Grill in West Palm Beach and show off your moves. Every night except Sunday, the bar hosts line dancing classes from 7 to 9 p.m. Or boot-scoot a little farther west to Loxahatchee Groves on Thursday nights for line dancing fun at Boonies Sports Bar & Grill’s “Wild West Saloon,” where lessons start at 7 p.m. fredastaire.com; renegadeswpb.com; booniesfl.com
Few things compare to the thrill of watching a rodeo in real time. Born from traditional cattle-herding practices, these tests of skill, speed, and dexterity are closely associated with

the cowboys of the American West. And next month, you can experience it for yourself at the Okeechobee Cattlemen’s Annual Cowtown Rodeo! The two-day event takes place March 8-9 at the Cattlemen’s Grandstand Arena in Okeechobee, featuring professional bull riding, steer wrestling, barrel racing, team roping, and saddle bronc riding—plus mutton bustin’ and calf scrambles for the kids. okeechobeecattlemens.com
South Florida may not be the country music capital that Nashville is, but it’s quickly becoming a hotbed for musicians playing genres like bluegrass, rhythm and blues, Southern rock, and folk/Americana. Mega country star Jason Aldean lives in Martin County, Nashville singer Ricky Young moved to Jupiter a few years ago (and plays at Tiki 52 every Thursday and Sunday), and dozens of amazing musicians hit our local stages nightly at spots like Guanabanas, Blue Pointe Bar and Grill, Square Grouper, Harry and the Natives, and Terra Fermata. Be on the lookout for performances by Americana-folk duos The Leafy Greens Band and The Nouveaux Honkies, country singer/songwriter Tori Lee, country-rock band 56 Ace, bluegrass jam band The Grass Is Dead, and more. ❖

Whether you’re cooking up sweet and saucy Kansas City–style burnt ends, a spicy and tangy Carolina whole hog, or a meltin-your-mouth Texas-style brisket, there’s one essential step that makes barbecue dreams come true: the rub. A mixture of spices and dried herbs applied to meats before grilling or smoking, the rub is one of the most important elements of any barbecue creation.
In a traditional rub, the salt and sugar work with the meat’s moisture to create a “bark” (or crust) that helps seal in juices and add flavor. “The core purpose of a barbecue rub is to enhance the meat,” says Tommy Nevill, owner of NEVS Barbecue in Palm Beach Gardens.
Flavors vary depending on the style of barbecue but often feature salt, black pepper, brown sugar, garlic powder, and onion powder. Some rubs include paprika, cayenne, ground mustard, cumin, and FOOD | COCKTAILS | HOT SPOTS |
coffee. Says Taylor Shull, owner of Island Pig & Fish in Fort Pierce: “Coffee offers a unique flavor and promotes excellent crusting on brisket.”
For Nevill, the king of barbecue is a Texas-style beef brisket. For the rub on his USDA Prime beef, he keeps things simple with ultra-coarse sea salt and ground black pepper before smoking for a minimum of 14 hours. For ribs, pulled pork, and poultry, brown sugar takes center stage. “It tenderizes and sweetens, which really brings out the flavor and creates a beautiful texture,” says Nevill. At Island Pig & Fish, Shull uses a barbecue rub for the smoked fish (and the fish dip) that includes ancho chili, smoked paprika, Hungarian paprika, fresh ground pepper, mustard powder, garlic powder, cumin, and cayenne. “It works like a brine to pull the moisture out of the fish and
adds in most of the flavor,” he says.
A rub can be classified as either wet or dry, which has to do with the application. While a dry rub is intended to create a barrier on the meat to seal in its natural juices while cooking, a wet rub is more “a mopping of meat, adding liquid throughout the smoking process with things like apple cider vinegar, coffee, and beer,” says Nevill. Wet rubs are more common with Memphis-style and Carolina whole hog barbecue, he adds. No matter what type of rub you’re using, it’s crucial to allow ample time for the meat to soak up the seasonings before cooking—at least 24 hours, according to both Nevill and Shull. Nevill adds that starting with quality meat (or fish) is a must.
From there, don’t be afraid to experiment until you find your ideal rub mix. Says Shull: “Start with something simple and keep tinkering until it’s just right.” nevsbarbecue.com; islandpigandfish. com ❖

The lemon adds a vibrant, uplifting zest, while the coconut brings a tropical twist—a little nod to both brands that started out in Palm Beach.
