omething that most people may not know about me is that while my career has always been focused on words as an editor and writer, that wasn’t always the plan. In college, I majored in magazine journalism. But at Syracuse, we had to choose a focus within that realm, and my focus was illustration photography. I’ve always loved taking pictures and have accumulated a nifty collection of old cameras over the years, including a couple of classic Polaroids, which I thought were super fun back in the day (and still do). What sucked me into the world of photography most was being in the darkroom. Digital photography was brand new at the time, so developing your own film and using the enlarger to “dodge” and “burn” until the black-and-white image was just how you wanted it was par for the course in my college days. I’d get lost in the magic of it all, spending hours in the dark, oblivious to the passage of time. These days, making beautiful photographs is a lot easier, and I appreciate the technology (almost) as much as I enjoyed the oldschool techniques. Beauty is, after all, in the eye of the beholder. Capturing a striking image is as much about seeing things in your own way as it is translating that vision into a picture. I’m telling you all of this so you know just how excited I was to run our first “Hometown Love” photo contest. Back in the fall, we asked the community to take photographs of anything and everything around town that they felt conveyed the concept of hometown love. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but y’all brought it! From gorgeous landscapes to precious moments frozen in time, the submissions were varied, thoughtful, and all striking in their own way. If I had to pick a favorite, I’d have to go with Christopher Spain’s photo of sandhill cranes silhouetted by the setting sun that graces this month’s cover. Still, I love all of the submissions so much that we decided not to choose a sole “winner” but instead to showcase as many of your images as we could. See the 14 images we selected to celebrate hometown love this month in “An Ode to Home,” beginning on page 46. Special thanks to all for taking part and sharing your visions of beauty with us! Peace and blessings,

Florida in February

F

KEITH LORIGAN

ebruary is one of my favorite months here in Florida. We are lucky to avoid the icy cold temperatures our friends and family from northern states must endure. On average, the mercury hovers around 75 degrees Fahrenheit in our area this month, which feels pretty cool to those of us who live here year-round. It’s certainly a nice respite from our steamy summers. The mild weather makes enjoying South Florida’s 360 miles of coastline with 189 official beaches to choose from a pleasure. I firmly believe that we have some of the best beaches in the country, which is why so many flock here to enjoy the warmth and sunshine. Our lovely array of local resorts suit a variety of needs. From beachfront to Intracoastal views to secret hideaways, there are hotels to fit every taste and budget. February and March are the busiest months of the year, thanks to our visitors. The roadways are buzzing, but so is the wonderful energy in our local restaurants and boutique shops, making it easy to see why so many want to move here. To find a new favorite dining spot, check out our Flavor dining guide, located near the back of the magazine. There are also several special advertising sections inside focusing on places like PGA Commons in Palm Beach Gardens and Harbour Bay Plaza in Stuart. And check out our Luxury Homes real estate guide to see some amazing properties that you may want to make your first (or second) home. If you are interested in promoting your business in any of these special sections in the future, please drop me an email for more information. February brings a full calendar of events that support our community. I’ve already penciled in a few, including the Hannah’s Home Gala at the Pelican Club February 15, Furry Friends’ Wags to Riches Gala February 16, and the CARP Luncheon at the Four Seasons February 17. If you’d like to keep up with all the happenings in our area, sign up for our Insider’s Guide newsletter at jupitermag.com. Have a fantastic winter season, and I will see you in March!

We’re dedicated to making the simple solution for your complex divorce even

BETTER.

For over 20 years, the partners at Fisher Potter Hodas (FPH) have concentrated their practice on complex, high stakes divorce cases for corporate executives, closely held business owners, professional athletes, celebrities and wealthy families throughout the state of Florida.

FPH has now expanded its practice by joining forces with Rottenstreich Farley and Bronstein based in New York City.

And, on October 15, 2023, we opened our new, fully staffed Miami office.

The new firm, RFB+Fisher Potter Hodas creates an interstate team of 30 seasoned matrimonial lawyers who (i) were educated at some of America’s finest law schools (including Harvard, Yale, Georgetown, N.Y.U., University of Florida and University of Pennsylvania) and (ii) honed their litigation skills at some of America’s finest law firms (including Cravath, Swaine & Moore; DLA Piper; Goodwin Procter; White & Case; Holland & Knight; and the U.S. Justice Department).

RFB+FPH lawyers have tried to verdict multiple cases with hundreds of millions of dollars at stake and sensitive child related issues in dispute. n

s golfers Jack Nicklaus and Justin Thomas stood poised to cut the ribbon at Palm Beach Gardens’ newest golf course this past November, all eyes turned overhead. Spectators watched as two Navy SEALs parachuted from a plane and floated down from the skies, landing next to Nicklaus and Thomas at Panther National’s first tee as the national anthem boomed through speakers. The exciting stunt was a fitting beginning for a golf course that, by many accounts, is destined to be one of the top private courses in the state. Located at Avenir off Northlake Boulevard, Panther National sits on 2,400 acres of land and, in addition to golf, features a club and spa, pools and cabanas, tennis and pickleball courts, over 10 miles of nature trails, and a private residential community. To celebrate the opening, co-designers Nicklaus FE B R UA RY 2 0 2 4

and Thomas were joined by Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele, Lexi Thompson, Erik van Rooyen, and Morgan Hoffmann for a friendly three-hole competition as guests sipped cocktails and enjoyed the show. To create the 18-hole golf course Nicklaus and Thomas envisioned, the original land needed to be completely reshaped. “People asked, ‘How did you find a piece of property like this in Florida?’” says Nicklaus. “The answer is, we didn’t.” The project required almost 2

million cubic yards of earth to be moved to shape the linksstyle championship course that features huge elevation changes and beach-like bunkers. Nicklaus has designed more than 300 courses, but for Thomas, this was a first. “It’s pretty cool to have your first golf course design be with one of the greatest of all time,” says Thomas. Panther National also offers a par 3, nine-hole course with three different tee options ranging from 90 yards to 150 yards. Designed to be equally as spectacular as the championship course, the “Panther9” short course includes an island green that replicates the famous seventeenth hole at TPC Sawgrass. The golf experience at Panther National is rounded out with a performance center, a practice range, and a short game practice area. “Players can expect the best possible golf experience,” promises Nicklaus. panthernational.com ❖

FOR THE

FUN OF IT Last Summer, the City of Palm Beach Gardens opened a new facility suited to both serious golf games and family fun. Located next to Sandhill Crane Golf Club, The Nest comprises a 30,000-squarefoot putting green, a two-story driving range, and a par 3 golf course, plus a nineteenth hole with an island green, two bars, a retail shop, and casual dining. The driving range utilizes TrackMan technology to analyze metrics related to golf swing and ball reaction to help improve your game. Nicklaus Design created the golf course, which measures just over 3,000 yards from the back tees with a championship-level design that’s more challenging than a typical par 3. Those seeking a day of easy fun can take part in games like Closest to the Pin and Capture the Flag to experience golf through friendly competition. Says Casey Mitchell, director of golf at The Nest: “This is a way to include everybody and give all residents, whether you play golf or not, something to be proud of.” gardensgolf.com —Valerie Staggs

ast year, Port St. Lucie resident April Kirkwood made quite the impression when she went looking for love on the first season of ABC’s The Golden Bachelor, providing much of the humor on the show (and faking a pickleball injury to get some extra attention). A mom to two grown children and grandmother of two, the former schoolteacher and current mental health therapist had a blast filming the show, but golden bachelor Gerry Turner failed to give her a rose in week four and she left the bachelor mansion. Here, 66-year-old Kirkwood talks about her experience. What was your love like life prior to your appearance on The Golden Bachelor?

My first marriage lasted 18 months (I was in college). My second husband and I had two children together and divorced after 17 years of marriage. Most recently, I was dating Ralph for 20 years until his passing two and a half years ago. I was very depressed [after he passed away], and everyone kept sending me applications for The Golden Bachelor. I was just sitting here feeling sorry for myself, so I thought, let me fill this out. And, lo and behold, they called me. Kirkwood greets Turner for the first time with humor.

April Kirkwood receives a rose from Gerry Turner before being eliminated from the show in week four.

GOLDEN GIRL

You didn’t get the chance to go on a oneon-one date. If you could have gone on one of the other women’s dates, which would you choose?

I really loved the beautiful one where Ellen [Goltzer, of Delray Beach] went up in a hot air balloon. I do think that people who get a one-on-one with the bachelor have an advantage. How has appearing on the show changed you?

It’s been a real process of reawakening for me, a healing force. I’ve cried a lot, and I’m more open now…. I’m back to myself! I hope I get to fall in love again. I don’t know how many chances people get to have the real thing, but if it comes to me, my heart is ready.

ABC/CRAIG SJODIN

Now that you’re back home, are you dating?

28

Not yet. The Bachelor has kept me so busy that I really don’t have time. When I was in the mansion, I could see that even though we were older women, we were all still being triggered by unhealed issues. I wanted to go back and just see—am I over Ralph? Do I have issues with dating? I had not dated [since losing Ralph] until I met Gerry, and I immediately noticed his sensitivity. He has such a beautiful way of saying goodbye to his [deceased] wife, and there were times he got very teary about her. That gave me a lot of food for thought. How will I feel if a new man moves into the house I once shared with Ralph? I’m doing a lot of introspection and getting ready to date. ❖

Great

BAIT

Where you get your live bait matters. Here, aquaculture farmer Nicole Kirchoff explains why.

M

b y VA L E R I E S TA G G S

What exactly is baitfish aquaculture?

In Florida alone, $274 million is spent annually on live bait, and most of it comes from the wild. Baitfish aquaculture is the process of growing fish in captivity for use as bait so we are not depleting what is in our waters. Growing fish through aquaculture, whether it is used as baitfish or as food fish, is a very healthy, environmentally sound way of getting food.

Kirchoff’s kids helping out at Live Advantage Bait

30

What are some of the benefits of baitfish aquaculture?

Growing baitfish takes pressure off the wild stock of baitfish. Wild baitfish stocks are collapsing because of coastal water pollution. If we stop depleting our coastal stock of baitfish, and they are allowed to rebound, then commercially important fish will come closer to shore again, making it more fun for recreational and commercial fishermen.

Family at work

How do I know if the bait I buy came from an aquaculture farm?

Fish grown at an aquaculture farm are what we call “fat.” They are in much nicer condition than wild fish that are caught and transported under stressful conditions. You can also ask your bait and tackle shop or charter fisherman where they got their bait from. The shops that get bait from us are very proud to tell customers where it came from. ❖

NICK SARGENT

any amateur anglers never consider where the bait they are using comes from (unless of course they caught some mullet themselves). But understanding what you put on your hook is vitally important to the future of fishing and our coastal environment. Jupiter native Nicole Kirchoff founded Live Advantage Bait in 2013, the first and only commercial marine baitfish aquaculture company in the country. From its Fort Pierce aquaculture farm, Live Advantage Bait produces six different species of baitfish that are distributed to commercial and recreational fishing outlets and smaller aquaculture farms. Kirchoff, who recently won a CARES award from the Florida Farm Bureau in recognition of her efforts to protect Florida’s environment, shares what we should know about baitfish. liveadvantagebait.com

Hometown Love A STORY OF LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL SWEETHEARTS WHO ALMOST WEREN’T

L

ast June, friends and family of Lily Warner and Canaan Campo gathered at the Pelican Club in Jupiter to witness the wedding of the local high school sweethearts. Also in attendance was a 1957 Chevy convertible, borrowed from the Elliott Museum and there to pay homage to the night that started it all a decade ago. Recreating their first “date” on their wedding day in a vintage convertible

34

Back in 2013, when Warner and Campo were students at Jensen Beach High School, Warner, who was president of the Student Government Association, was required to take part in the homecoming parade. She needed an escort to accompany her on the ride in a convertible, so she approached fellow senior Campo, whom she’d known since their days at Stuart Middle School. “I was actually her second choice,” notes Campo, now 28. The first guy she had asked bailed, unwilling to spend the time on all the preparations that a Lily-style homecoming required. “I’m extremely type A,” says Warner, 27. But Campo rolled with the punches, including making multiple trips to Dillard’s to find the perfect teal bow tie to match Warner’s dress. “He went along with all of my shenanigans,” Warner says. Along the way, Campo grew fond of her irrepressible positivity. “I was like, I really like being around her,” he says. For her part, Warner was falling hard. “I’d never been treated with such respect and patience,” she says. So that October night after the homecoming game, Warner garnered her nerve and asked Campo if he wanted to be in a relationship. This time, however, his answer was no. “I didn’t want to mess up a good friendship,” he explains. A few months later, he had a change of heart, and just like that, the “backup plan” became the boyfriend. Their relationship managed to survive college—Warner studied theater at James Madison University in Virginia, while Campo also headed to Virginia as an economics major at Marymount University.

In 2021, the pair moved to Ohio when Campo landed his dream job working with the Cleveland Cavaliers. As Warner found her footing on the local theater scene and the couple settled into their new lives, they got engaged two months later. When it came time to choose a wedding location, they knew they wanted to share their special day back home in Florida and opted to marry at the Pelican Club. “We wanted all of our friends to see how beautiful the area we’d grown up in is,” says Warner. “I love how it represented this beautiful place where we met and fell in love. Our roots dig deep here. It’s cozy and just feels like home.” ❖

F

or John and Marnie Nikels of Tequesta, boating is synonymous with the Bahamas. John’s first crossing at age 3 cast a spell, and Marnie used to live on Andros Island. The area holds a special place in the couple’s hearts. They exchanged wedding vows in Freeport, Grand Bahama and spent a month island-hopping by boat for their honeymoon. When Marnie gave birth to their eldest child, now 10, they named her Lucaya (a suburb of Freeport). And their sons—Merritt, 8, and Keelson, 6—further illustrate the importance of boating in their lives. John once owned a 31-foot Contender,

36

but he sold it and got a smaller boat. Eventually, his young family started to outgrow the vessel, and the need for something large enough to resume island crossings was on his radar. Once the kids became old enough to cross and participate in fishing and spear-diving trips, he began the search for something in the 25-foot range (not unlike his old Contender). After looking at numerous boats in this class, a chance encounter on a charter trip in the Keys on a 28 Whitewater made John shuffle the deck. This was an ideal boat for the family, he thought, but his search for a used model proved difficult since people

who build these boats seem to hang on to them forever. Ultimately, he decided to order a custom build directly from Whitewater. The idea of building from the bottom up, to his own specs, meant every feature would be exactly what was needed for the Nikels’ personal boating style. For starters, they wanted extended fuel range and the economy to match for long runs to the Abaco chain where they do a lot of their boating. A pair of 300-hp Suzuki outboards realizing 2.4 mpg affords them the ability to run to Green Turtle Cay. Three 75-gallon tanks provide well over 400 miles of range. A custom Birdsall Marine hardtop and helm station with a built-in 45-gallon live well was moved forward on deck to allow more space

in the cockpit while shifting weight forward to accommodate the larger engines. Custom color-matched SeaDek provides a stylish interior aesthetic and a soft pad for foot and back comfort. Twin Garmin units and a quality audio system along with 12-volt outlets for electric reels are included. In addition to her classy lines and roomy deck configuration, this model is perhaps the ideal size. Easy trailering, interior space for the whole family, and a seaworthy platform for safe crossings join outstanding fuel economy and water sports functionality to make this serious fishing and spear-diving vessel a perfect fit for the family. ❖

There are endless reasons to love where we live, and paying homage to the magic of it all seemed like a good idea for our Hometown Love issue. Last fall, we put a call out to readers to submit their favorite photos that convey the idea of hometown love, and y’all did not disappoint! We knew we would receive a fair share of photos of iconic spots like the Jupiter Lighthouse, the Roosevelt Bridge, and, of course, the beach—and each is unique and stunning in its own right. But some of the “slices

of life” caught on camera were unexpected, and we appreciated seeing so many different perspectives and takes on the topic. A great blue heron catching its dinner at Riverbend Park, a lazy cat enjoying the day in downtown Stuart, a couple of owlets sharing a tender moment in Port St. Lucie… All of these fleeting moments are part of what makes life here so magical. he city of Stuart has earned accolades in recent years, ranking number two on USA Today’s 2023 list of the best coastal small towns in America and named the “happiest seaside town” by Coastal Living in 2016. The heartbeat of the city is the historic downtown district, which was established way back in the late 1800s and has evolved over the years into a vibrant area filled with arts, culture, and top-notch dining and shopping experiences.

58

“It’s the heart of our county,” says Candace Callahan, current executive director of Stuart Main Street, the nonprofit that has overseen the downtown district since 1987. “Being surrounded by water, we’re almost like a little island, so you get that coastal vibe. I see all different walks of life come through here day in and day out. It’s a perfect place to work, play, and live.” Here, a look at some of the fun to be had in downtown Stuart, from history tours to arts excursions and a whole lot more….

owntown Stuart is great every day of the week, but on Sundays it’s the place to be. Start the day at Market on Main, a weekly farmers market in Flagler Park held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Around

seventy vendors sell everything from gluten-free and vegan baked goods, fresh produce, and spices, to pet products and artisanal goods. Stroll the market while listening to the live acoustic entertainment or take part in one of the wellness activities on site, such as yoga and Zumba classes. At least 500 people attend the market each week, but don’t worry, there are plenty of free public parking spaces in the area to accommodate everyone. On the first and third Sundays of each month, Market on Main designates a special section for pint-size entrepreneurs to sell their homemade products. “Main Street’s mission is all about being incubators for small businesses, so we duplicated that idea and started focusing on COURTESY OF SQUARE GROUPER

the youth and nurturing youth entrepreneurship,” says Callahan. “We’re giving them the space and the capacity to nurture their talent and their skill set. It’s also great to get them out from behind their computer screens every once in a while and into real-world situations.” When you’re ready, walk over to the stage by the St. Lucie River for Rock’n Riverwalk, which runs from 1 to 4 p.m. and features live music ranging from blues and Americana to reggae and classic rock. When the PAUL PIASECKI

show’s over, grab a drink at Sailor’s Return (thesailorsreturn.com), which offers stunning views of the Sunset Bay Marina & Anchorage, before driving over the Roosevelt Bridge at dusk to catch a breathtaking sunset on the way home. ❖

SEA STORY

Passing Point Sur 57” x 79”

“The sea knows no limits, makes no concessions. It has given us everything and it can take everything away from us.” – John Ajvide Lindqvist

Jane Lawton Baldridge

Baldridge’s first source of inspiration is the myriad shades of blue and turquoise found in the sea. “I can stare at it for days,” she says. She’s also intrigued by the water’s motion. “My favorite lullaby has always been the lapping of the waves on the shore or the side of the hull.” — Daniela Ghelman, Boca Raton Observer

Bermuda Triangle, 60” x 40”

We are all in the same boat, in a stormy sea, and we owe each other a terrible loyalty. —Gilbert K. Chestert

THE GAFFORD’S EXECUTIVE CHEF TAYLOR WILSON EXTENDS THE FAMILY BUSINESS WITH PALM CITY SOCIAL

C

hef Taylor Wilson and his family have made a name for themselves on the Martin County food scene. Their casual-meets-upscale restaurant in Stuart—The Gafford, named for Taylor’s great-grandparents, Robert and Virginia Gafford—marked its eleventh anniversary in 2023. What better way to celebrate than with a brand-new concept? Last October, Wilson and his parents opened Palm City Social,

a casual dining spot that aims to be a gathering place for all. “Palm City Social is an open concept with a lively dining room spilling over to the bar area,” says Wilson, who remains executive chef at The Gafford. “It’s more of a social gathering place, where The Gafford is more of an intimate setting.” The restaurant is the latest endeavor from a family with a long lineage of food service. Robert Gafford was a cook in

from burgers and sandwiches to steaks and seafood and including some comforting, hearty dishes. “The chicken Milanese, short rib grilled cheese, and double-bone pork chop are our top three sellers, followed by our filet mignon,” says Wilson. An expansive, rotating wine list is accompanied by tasty cocktails like the old-fashioned and a variety of martinis. Two of the most popular are the Brown Sugar Bourbon Espresso Martini and the Blackberry Bramble. The open, inviting space is perfect for a family outing, happy hour, girls’ night out, business dinner, or date. Aqua green and cream-colored upholstered chairs and booths combine with gold accents and fixtures throughout, giving the restaurant a sleek ambience that evokes mid-century modern with an Art Deco flair. The inside dining area seats 151, while a (dog-friendly), outdoor patio accommodates 80 more. Wilson hopes patrons will enjoy the new hot spot as the social hub he envisioned it to be. For him, it’s another place to be with his family and make memories. “It’s pretty cool to be able to work with your family every day, have this close relationship, and build something together that people enjoy,” he says. 3162 SW Martin Downs Blvd., Palm City; palmcitysocial.com; 772.254.4247 ❖

the U.S. Air Force. Wilson’s dad, Rick, went to culinary school and, prior to opening The Gafford in 2012, worked as regional vice president at Brinker International Inc., where he oversaw a third of the country’s On the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina locations. “I grew up watching my dad,” says Wilson, 35, who trained at The Art Institute of Dallas. “I think every boy kind of idolizes his father and wants to be like his dad.” While his parents have an ownership stake in Palm City Social, the property is allowing Wilson to spread his wings while continuing the family tradition. He has curated a mouthwatering menu that incorporates ingredients from local farmers and beekeepers, with entrées ranging

Why did you decide to become a chef? My mother and uncles were chefs, and I developed a love for food and knowledge of palate. Both my parents worked, so when I got home, I had to fend for myself and learned how to cook as a teenager. My first job was at Mark’s Las Olas. What have you learned over the years working at 1000 North? When I was a daytime sous chef, I learned the restaurant as if I were the owner. I touched base with everyone, from the health inspector to the vendors to the electricians to the gas company to the fire department. I absorbed all of that, and when the time came to become executive chef, I didn’t need to be trained.

Have you made any changes to the menu? The menu changes twice a year, for season and offseason. We’re always upgrading. We used to have filet as our tartare, but I upgraded to an American Wagyu New York strip, which gives better flavor profiles. Any fun stories to share? Back when I got promoted to the sous chef position, when [partial owner] Michael Jordan came in for dinner, he shook my hand and congratulated me.
