November is always an exciting time of year. Not only is the weather cooling a bit, but our seasonal residents arrive in droves with great anticipation for the social season. And while we have no idea what “season” will look like this year (thanks, COVID), the past few months have taught us that we can be resilient and innovative in the face of challenges. There’s much to look forward to, and be thankful for, this month. No one knows that better than restaurateurs Angelo and Denise Elia, who opened their waterfront home to friends and staff for a Thanksgiving feast (“Giving Thanks,” page 52). After a year like this, gratitude is front of mind and the Elias have expressed it exuberantly. Denise’s gorgeous table and desserts (I’m obsessed with her Basque burnt cheesecake!) and chef Angelo’s cooking—including traditional turkey and Italian-style rolled porchetta—made everyone feel welcome and loved. Isn’t that what celebrations are all about? This month we also spotlight a local who’s quickly becoming one of the best female tennis players in the world. Sonya “Sofia” Kenin, No. 4 woman worldwide as of this writing, has had a phenomenal year, and it keeps getting better. Playing seriously since age 5, Sofia has an innate talent for the game and all its intricacies. As her former coach, Rick Macci, says, “She knows and understands the geometry of the court.” Turn to “Courting Greatness” on page 48 to learn more about this fierce athlete on the rise. Wishing you a safe and exciting season ahead.

24/SEVEN SEASONAL FINDS

When Helen Rodriguez needed to reevaluate her plans of becoming a professional ballerina due to a heart condition, it allowed her to discover a passion for flowers. With the creation of Ever After Floral Design in Sunrise, Rodriguez is able to infuse her dance background into her new craft. “When you design an arrangement, you are constantly thinking of the movement of each stem,” she notes. “The lines you create in your arrangements with your flowers give interest and depth to your work, much like a ballerina does with her body as she dances across the floor. I consider floral design to be just as much of a performance as ballet.” While Rodriguez loves working with fresh flowers, she’s noticed the growing popularity of forever flowers (dried and preserved) as they outlast fresh by more than a year. During the holidays, an Ever After arrangement can be a great festive addition to a mantelpiece or dining console. “If you have space on your table, I would recommend a low centerpiece to keep the conversation flowing,” says Rodriguez, who also hosts inperson and virtual floral arrangement workshops for those interested in learning the art. On TREND

Michelle DiMarco is redefining retail with the launch of the Lilac and Lilies Loft.

For the past 11 years, Michelle DiMarco has been outfitting South Florida’s trendiest locals as the owner of Lilac and Lilies Boutique in Fort Lauderdale. While she grew up in South Florida, DiMarco’s passion for styling ultimately took her to the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, where she studied creative enterprise ownership and became engulfed in runway shows and designer showrooms. “Going to New York Fashion Week and sitting front row next to celebrities really inspired me,” she recalls. “I was able to make great connections and fully focus on my education before openA Buddy Love Snakeskin maxi ing my store.” dress easily transiFast-forward to present day, and DiMations to fall. rco is ready for her latest venture: Lilac and Lilies Loft, a transformation of her brickand-mortar boutique, which now operates as a showroom focused on e-commerce and is available by appointment for styling (in-person and virtually), personal shopping, and special events. “Now we can serve customers all over the world while keeping my South Florida connection,” notes DiMarco. This month be on the lookout for various trunk shows, with details available in her newsletter and on social media. Get to know more about DiMarco and learn five tips for how to transition your wardrobe for “Florida fall” below. (lilacandlilies.com) —M.P.

WARDROBE TRANSITIONING 101 1. WORK IN OUTERWEAR Those easy, breezy long dresses you rocked all summer will come in handy when the temperature drops. Wear a lightweight maxi dress in a fall color and layer it with a jacket, scarf, and belt. Try pairing midi dresses with a bootie or even an over-the-knee boot.

4. GO CLASSIC When in doubt, go with a good, old denim jacket. This classic staple is the perfect summer-to-fall outerwear, as it looks just as great layered over a cute floral summer dress as it does paired with a warm sweater and boots.

2. ADD A BLAZER A beautifully tailored blazer is perfect for the fluctuating temperatures and can be worn on its own or under a trench.

5. WARDROBE MUST A wide-leg jumpsuit is a fantastic summer-to-fall essential as it’s lightweight but still easy to layer with other items. Not to mention it’s also super comfy to wear all day long.

3. ACCESSORIES SWITCH-UP Easily revamp your summer outfit to fall by switching your accessories. Think: a felt hat, ankle boots, and belts. 18

Transition a romper for fall by swapping out your accessories.

DIMARCO SOUNDS OFF ON SARTORIAL STYLE FASHION INSPIRATION: I’m super inspired by Jennifer Lopez. Her style is the perfect combination of sexy, classic, and edgy. She also doesn’t let her age define her style.

PERSONAL AESTHETIC: I love to combine edgy with classic style.

Fort Lauderdale residents Brady and Lauren Cobb practice what they preach. “Health is wealth,” notes Lauren, who is an instructor at SOL Yoga in Fort Lauderdale. “We want to live long, happy lives, and we believe that taking care of our mind and body is a critical component to longevity.” A mother of two, Lauren teaches yoga in studio (SOL classes range from traditional Vinyasa flows to ones that incorporate extra core work and cardio), livestreams yoga classes from her dock via Zoom, and prerecords sessions for her Vimeo account. “Yoga serves as a daily reminder that my body, mind, and spirit may be tested, but I will not break as I stretch my physical and mental bodies on my mat and share it with the world via my daily livestreamed yoga flow,” she says. While Brady and Lauren practice yoga together, he also assists in creating her unique playlists. “Brady is not only my husband but my partner and best friend,” she says. “We bounce all ideas off of each other, and we truly support one another.” Lauren is also her husband’s biggest supporter, especially when it comes to his company, Bluma Wellness. Launched in 2018, Bluma Wellness owns and operates One Plant Florida, a vertically integrated, licensed medical cannabis company whose mission is to “honor the fullest expression of each seed we cultivate, and we truly live and die by the fact that our cannabis is grown, not made,” says Brady. One Plant Florida cultivates and processes its premium cannabis flower at greenhouse facilities in Indiantown and Ruskin. The product is sold as the flower or in pre-rolled, distillate, or concentrate forms at dispensaries across Florida or via e-commerce; everything is also available for curbside pick-up or home delivery. Eleven new dispensary sites are currently in construction, including three locations in Broward County. Brady’s interest in cannabis began with his

father, Bill Cobb, who orchestrated what is considered the largest marijuana smuggling operation in U.S. history in the late ’70s and early ’80s, according to the Department of Justice. “Years later, cannabis was something that provided mental and physical release toward the end of his battle with cancer,” Brady notes. Wanting to enter the industry legally, Barry studied law at Barry University in Orlando and went on to serve as chief legal officer of Liberty Health Sciences, another publicly traded medical marijuana treatment clinic. Brady left that role to pursue a dream of operating his own cannabis company. His next focus is on home delivery throughout Florida, with the ultimate goal of having 21 stores and delivery hubs. With each new step forward, he is happy to have support from Lauren. “I couldn’t do what I am doing without her,” he says. “She is my sounding board, my reality check, and is always there to keep me grounded. When it comes to our children, wellness, and careers, Lauren and I work together as a team.” —M.P.

reinforcement, especially to Black youth as representation is so important—it is how I express communal care. How has your work evolved in response to recent racial justice protests? I have tackled police brutality with a series of digital illustrations that address injustice and racial profiling. This series was done a while ago, as this has been a critical issue for a very long time in the Black community. In this series, the faceless police officers wear badges emblazoned with “shoot,” “imprison,” and “silence,” while the other characters have targets for faces. Unfortunately, I feel that these pieces remain relevant, but my hope is that I stir the emotions and actions that lead to real, substantial change. What would you say to young artists who are looking to make an impact? I believe that answer is twofold. In the creative realm, always continue pushing yourself to grow. Try new styles, experiment, and be bold in expressing your thoughts and feelings. And equally important, every young artist must also be an entrepreneur. Marketing yourself with your business card, website, and social media and connecting with other artists and curators are all steps to getting your work seen, and then hopefully making an impact.

Artistic VISION

The Pompano Beach Cultural Affairs Department has announced a new ShortTerm Artist-in-Residence Program to help emerging artists grow in their craft. The first participant is M. Jamesly Saint Louis, better known as Jamezly. A graduate of Dillard High School’s Visual & Performing Arts magnet program, Jamezly has been granted access to a studio at Bailey Contemporary Arts to build his portfolio for the Rhode Island School of Design, where he was recently admitted. He’s also working on a coloring book project depicting local luminaries such as Esther Rolle. In his art, Jamezly seeks to “center Blackness in all lights.” Here, he discusses this goal and advice for young artists. (jamezly.com) —Mary Murray FLI: Why are the visual arts uniquely poised to share Black experiences with a diverse audience? Jamezly: I believe visual arts can be transformative because of the feelings evoked and the way

24

images remain in your brain and soul. The visual arts have the power to convey a message that allows diverse people to share a connective experience. Through much of my portraiture work, which often features my friends, I feel I am able to showcase real Black people on canvas, celebrating our culture and openly displaying an array of emotions, from Black joy to Black trauma. I also feel visual arts can provide tremendous positive

ISLAND Beauty

The legacy of Hollywood legend Marlon Brando shines at THE BRANDO, the South Pacific’s premier private island resort By Paul Rubio Rewind to the early 1960s when a young Marlon Brando arrived in French Polynesia to film Mutiny on the Bounty. The South Pacific had long piqued Brando’s curiosity, and his freshman trip to the island nation sparked love at first sight. By 1967, Brando had consummated his love affair with French Polynesia by purchasing Tetiaroa, a breathtaking atoll roughly 30 miles north of Tahiti,

035_ESCAPE_1120.indd 35

anchored by a lustrous blue lagoon and fringed by 12 palm tree-studded motus (islets), vibrant patches of coral, and countless white sand beaches. At his remote home away from home, Brando sought to preserve—and even share—a piece of French Polynesia’s natural splendor and biological heritage by not only protecting the land but creating a world-class research station and the planet’s foremost carbon-neutral resort. Fast-forward to present day when Brando’s dream project has materialized into something more elevated, high-tech, and highbrow than the movie star could have ever imagined. Brando didn’t live to see the fruits of his vision—he passed away in 2004—but he entrusted prominent hotelier and fellow environmentalist Richard Bailey to crystalize and execute his plans. The actor’s legacy now flourishes at Brando’s family estate vis-à-vis a hyper-exclusive and eco-minded private island resort, The Brando, on the motu of Onetahi, complemented by the other safeguarded islets of Tetiaroa, which remain completely untouched. What makes The Brando so special—as in arguably best-island-retreat-in-the-world special? In a word: everything. From its profound history to its detail-oriented magic to a surreal, cinematic backdrop of extreme tropical exotica (rich in rare flora and fauna) and an unwavering sustainability mantra, this is ultra-luxury with a soul. Marlon Brando wasn’t the first or the last influ-

ential figure to frequent Tetiaroa. In fact, as far back as the eighteenth century, the atoll was a favorite of Tahitian royalty, according to oral history and evidenced by ancient structures and ceremonial sites that archaeologists have uncovered in recent decades. Beyond Brando’s 40-year relationship with his beloved Tetiaroa, regulars at his namesake resort read like a who’s who of popular culture: actor Leonardo DiCaprio, socialite Pippa Middleton, and former President Barack Obama, who began his post-presidential memoir, A Promised Land, on-island. Besides a glitzy title, the famous primarily flock to The Brando for the very same reason as other well-heeled travelers: to escape at their own pace. Home base is one of 35 eco-chic villas, which begin at a generous 1,033 square feet and seamlessly integrate into the native surrounds thanks to pandanus leaf roofing and building materials made of local or certified organic, renewable, or recycled components. Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors ensure continuous spatial flow, opening to a vast private terrace inclusive of an infinity-edge pool, dining area, and swathe of sandy beach that is shared, at times, with nesting green sea turtles.

PAUL RUBIO

While it’s possible to fulfill a castaway fantasy without ever leaving the confines of the villa, most choose to maximize their time at The Brando discovering greater Tetiaroa. After all, one of Earth’s most dramatic blue lagoons beckons, explorable by kayak, stand-up paddleboard, va’a (Polynesian outrigger canoe), or mask and snorkel. The latter best reveals the atoll’s prolific coral gardens and marine life thriving therein (more than 167 species have been documented here). Undeveloped areas of Onetahi and surrounding virgin motus are also the subjects of daily naturalist-led tours. One specializes in birdwatching and photography as thousands of land and seabirds call islet Tahuna Iti home, including great frigate birds and red-footed boobies. Another promises a scenic lay of the land, while yet another focuses on the atoll’s pre-Brando origins, visiting the remains of an ancient Polynesian temple or marae. There are also regularly scheduled cultural experiences like Polynesian dance classes, ukulele lessons, and traditional weaving sessions. Activities are bundled into The Brando’s all-inclusive rate, as are meals, libations, and treatments at Varua te Ora Polynesian Spa. Enjoy a romantic dinner in the privacy of your villa or interact with the chef at intimate Japanese teppanyaki restaurant, Nami. Sample fine French cuisine at Les Mutinés, fraternize with fellow guests over daytime tiki cocktails at the beachfront Bob’s Bar, or feast on Polynesian fish dishes at toes-in-the-sand Beachcomber Café. The Brando’s guests have complete liberty to make their days as action-packed or languid, scheduled, or spontaneous as desired. Immersed in this excess, it’s easy to forget that The Brando is nearing its goal of becoming fully

035_ESCAPE_1120.indd 37

BRANDO SUITES BORA BORA The Brando flaunts all one could covet in a French Polynesian vacation—everything except an overwater bungalow, that is. To curtail any FOMO (fear of missing out) one might have in the island nation that invented overwater accommodations, The Brando teamed up with The InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa to create four overwater

Brando Suites Bora Bora, the design of which mirrors The Brando’s own aesthetic. The four parcels of prime floating real estate deliver unobstructed vistas of Mount Otemanu, framed by brilliant turquoise waters. These million-dollar views are present from the master bedroom, private infinity pool, terrace, sundeck— just about every nook of the suite’s 3,465 square feet. Special packages allow guests to visit both The Brando private island plus its sister overwater suites. THE BRANDO

The Brando’s sustainability initiatives and the resort’s noteworthy Platinum LEED certification (the highest possible rating for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). It’s the earth-friendly ingenuity that realizes Brando’s vision for Tetiaroa; molding the South Pacific’s most exclusive resort was an afterthought. But together, it’s the best of both worlds—resolute environmental stewardship without compromising luxury. You can be sure Brando would be proud. (thebrando.com) «

carbon neutral and selfsustainable. Those villas, for instance, are part of a pioneering scientific experiment, cooled by a complex seawater air-conditioning (SWAC) system (fed by the cold of the ocean depths) and powered by solar energy generated from photovoltaic solar panels along Tetiaroa’s airstrip and coconut oil biofuel. From top: The spa at Chablé Yucatán is anchored by a serene cenote; an outdoor rainfall shower is just one element of each villa’s stunning bathroom.

Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula is best known for its prolific sparkling beaches, but some of its greatest treasures lie inland. Case in point: Chablé Yucatán, a stunning, 40-villa, 750-acre wellness retreat on the grounds of a former sisal plantation in the blink-and-you-mightmiss-it Mayan town of Chocholá. Born from the ruins of a nineteenth-century hacienda, the high-design hotel mingles glass elements with archaeological remains alongside colorful, colonial-inspired struc-

tures. Chablé’s freestanding casitas and family villas are emphatically modern and minimalist, framed by limestone and dark woods and homing in on the beauty of the surrounding natural foliage. Lush gardens and crystal walls foster an impression of jungle immersion indoors, especially within the expansive bathroom, where double sinks and rainfall showers appear to nurture the earth from which the plants grow. Outdoors, a white linen hammock sways over each casita’s private swimming pool, and a

shaded daybed offers respite from the blazing Mexican sun. At the property’s core lies a jungleclad cenote (limestone sinkhole) around which a world-class spa has been erected. With 14 treatment rooms, a full-scale fitness center, a temescal (traditional Mayan sweat lodge), an advanced hydrotherapy circuit, and an exquisite marble infinity pool, the Chablé Spa comprises the heart and soul of the property’s wellness philosophy. Treatments and ceremonial rituals are rooted in Mayan tradition and the healing powers of the sacred cenote. Between these culture-infused experiences, meditation sessions, sunrise yoga classes, and other endeavors in holistic healing, physical rejuvenation, and mental cleansing, it’s not uncommon for guests to visit the spa twice or thrice daily. Contrasting the contemporary casitas and fashionable spa, property grounds are strewn with vestiges of the site’s nineteenth-century incarnation: Original rock-hewn archways remain, as do remnants of stone buildings, many now overgrown by snaking tree roots. The dramatic juxtaposition of old and new climaxes at Ixi’im, Chablé’s signature restaurant helmed by acclaimed chef Jorge Vallejo, whose Mexico City restaurant, Quintonil, was named one of the world’s best. At Ixi’im, glass panes complete an original hacienda building, embedded in unfinished stone, illuminated by high-tech lighting and a subterranean firepit at the entrance. Inside, the 200-year-old, black-and-white-tiled floors have been restored to their original grandeur, while decorative sisal ropes hang from the ceiling, nodding to the past, and shelves

showcase the restaurant’s 3,000-plus vintage tequila bottles spanning centuries. (This is, in fact, one of the largest private tequila collections in the world.) The cuisine incorporates Mayan techniques and ingredients, Michelinstar prowess, and a health-conscious slant resulting in memorable dining experiences that are a testament to chef Vallejo’s global fame.

Other meals at Chablé are enjoyed primarily at Ki’ol, a more casual poolside restaurant that Vallejo also oversees. Of course, you could leave the premises to dine or engage in other activities; Yucatán’s historic capital city of Mérida, its international airport (serviced by direct flights from Miami), and archaeology headliners like Uxmal are an average of an hour away. But the sublime food, zen vibe, and enticements of the hacienda make it difficult to justify ever leaving the property. Plus, the entire point of Chablé Yucatán is to escape the world outside and discover—or rediscover—your personal mental and physical best. At Acqualina, safety protocols pave the way for EXCLUSIVE new experiences By Daphne Nikolopoulos The need to distance and be vigilant about safety doesn’t exactly make for a relaxed vacation. But it can also be an opportunity to innovate, as Acqualina Resort & Residences in Sunny Isles Beach has proven. Acqualina has implemented some of the highest safety protocols in the industry, including electrostatic disinfectant tools for sanitizing interior and exterior spaces, and contactless temperature stations in public areas. Guest rooms are equipped with personal protective equipment in chic, portable packages, and high-touch items like remotes are sanitized and wrapped for individual use. Hand sanitizer dispensers are everywhere, pool and beach furniture is distanced, and service staff Social distancing made chic (clockwise wear masks and gloves. from above): Breakfast in bed; a hamFor a AAA Five Diamond resort, that’s mock for one; private beach dining and picnicking; room service with a view. just standard. Acqualina has gone well beyond the notion of safety by making social distancing a luxurious endeavor. Alfresco dining has reached a new level of under the stars are served with rose petals, sea exclusivity through private beachfront dinners, breezes, and a soundtrack of waves lapping which allow guests to have the seaside lawn all the sand. The menu features shareable appeto themselves. Equally suited to romantic tête- tizers plus three courses, including a pistachioà-têtes and family dining, these candlelit meals crusted sea bass guaranteed to elicit cravings for months afterward. At lunchtime, the best option is a picnic hamper with Champagne and an impressive lineup of antipasti, salads, cheeses, tuna poke, cookies, and, naturally, chocolate-covered strawberries. It comes with a blanket you can spread out anywhere along the lawn, pool, or beach (or on your suite balcony, for that matter). The property has plenty of private nooks for the ultimate distanced experience. The Spa has its own COVID-19 prevention guidelines, including reduced capacity and extra time between treatments to properly sanitize the rooms. Some of the communal spaces 42

are not yet open, and staff wear appropriate PPE for the guests’ protection—so there’s no excuse for not indulging in a spa day. Acqualina’s facials are some of the most advanced anywhere. The Brightening HydraFacial MD, for example, grants an instant antiaging boost through lymphatic drainage, Britenol spot corrector, and LED light therapy. Kids get their own exclusive activities through the AcquaMarine Kids Club. Families can reserve a 90-minute private camp session for up to five children, during which campers will discover the ocean and its creatures through hands-on activities outdoors and in the clubhouse, all while having the full attention of counselors. The idea is to go over and above on safety, so guests don’t have to think about it and can focus on the good life instead. How novel. (acqualinaresort.com) «

The Sound Of SILENCE

Rolls-Royce unveils an all-new GHOST with a single-minded focus on keeping the noise down By Howard Walker

Rolls-Royce once claimed that at 60 mph, the loudest sound you heard in one of its cars was the ticking of the electric clock. Fast-forward to today, and the loudest sound you’ll hear in the all-new 2021 Rolls-Royce Ghost won’t be the clock—it went digital years ago—but a whisper. It seems that during the six-year development of this superlative, new-from-the-tires-up 2021 Ghost, engineers have managed to achieve close to the impossible: a cabin that is completely silent. There’s no engine noise. No wind noise. No tire roar. No nothing. Silence is golden, right? Think again. When they asked a group of owners to try out this no-noise interior, they were less than enthusiastic. They found it too disorientating, just too ghostly. Like wearing Bose noise-canceling headphones while driving. The solution? To give the Ghost the merest hint of a “whisper.” Rolls describes it as a soft undertone that you hear as a single, subtle note. Kind of like the sound of a kitten sleeping. Or Marcel Marceau screaming at the top of his lungs—miming, of course. To achieve this whisper, Rolls-Royce had to acoustically tune pretty much every component, from the seat frames to the trunk space to the inside of the air-conditioning ducts. They also squeezed in more than 200 pounds of sound-absorbing materials throughout the car, even

lining the tire interiors and double glazing the windows. Contributing heavily to the stealthy silence is the Ghost’s all-aluminum chassis. It’s a development of the so-called “Architecture of Luxury” first used on the flagship Phantom. Previous Ghost models rolled on a modified BMW 7-Series platform, which was good but not quite up to Rolls-Royce standards. This version allows the Ghost to offer—for the first time—four-wheel drive and rear-wheel steering, two major pluses guaranteed to heighten driving enjoyment. While this Roller’s elegant, stately profile seems almost unchanged from the 2009 original, only two components were carried over. One is that iconic Flying Lady, the other the trademark door-mounted umbrella. Everything else is new—and improved. The body is smoother, the lines just a tad softer, with fewer creases and body-panel joints. Ghost aficionados will also notice the new-look grille. It’s even more distinctive than before; a little less inset, and, for the first time, it features very cool down lighting. Twenty LEDs set underneath the top ever-sodelicately illuminate the stainless-steel blades, giving the car a unique lighting signature. Swing open one of those bank-vault-like doors and you’ll see the interior has beautifully evolved. In keeping with the growing trend

of less is more, everything from the stitching to the wood finishes to the leather on the seats is just a little less fussy. That tenet doesn’t quite apply to the dashboard, which comes with a stunning illuminated fascia. Designed to echo the Ghost’s sparkly Starlight headliner, the passenger-side dash panel features LEDs that shimmer around the Ghost logo. Beneath that mile-long hood, the Ghost’s honking 6.75-liter V-12 stays essentially unchanged, delivering 563 galloping horseys and a locomotive-like 627 lb-ft of torque. To complement that eerie interior silence, Rolls engineers gave this Ghost an even smoother, more stable

ride, achieved in part by a new front suspension design. Rolls claims, rather ambitiously, that it creates a “sense of flight on land” never before achieved in a car. We can’t wait to try it out. The wait shouldn’t be long. Production has already kicked off in the United Kingdom, with the first U.S. examples expected to arrive in the first quarter of 2021. Pricing starts at $332,500. The Ghost has been the marque’s most successful model in its 116year history, attracting a new generation of younger buyers—average age is now 43—drawn to a slightly smaller, more driver-focused model. Expect this new Ghost to continue that success. Just don’t expect the company to shout about it. Everything they do these days is with a whisper. «

Dutch TREAT

Zeelander’s exquisite Z55 proves that superyachts don’t have to be huge By Howard Walker

L

ife, they say, is too short to own an ugly boat. How many times have you groaned in horror at some top-heavy, Whirlpool-white, floating RV and asked yourself, “What were they thinking?” Thankfully, all it takes is one fleeting glance at the Dutch-built masterpiece that is the Zeelander Z55 to know all’s well with the boating world. Those voluptuous curves, that towering flared bow, those truly elegant proportions? Just gorgeous. Call it retro if you will. Yes, there’s a touch of Hinckley-esque Maine lobster boat in the profile. Plenty of roaring twenties, high-speed New York commuter in that rounded transom. But beneath those classic cues is a thoroughly modern mini-superyacht brimming with the very latest technology, some of the coolest design touches around, and a whole lot of best-of-the-best craftsmanship. Think of an aquatic Bentley Flying Spur and you’d be on the right track. One of my favorite features? All that teak brightwork edging the deck and pilothouse. Yes, it’s a nightmare to maintain, but gorgeous nevertheless. Only it’s not teak. It’s a tough-as-nails composite, hand-painted by a Dutch artisan in true trompe l’oeil tradition. I also love the tender garage. With Volvo Penta IPS drives mounted at the stern, there’s no space for conventional tender storage. Zeelander’s solution? To have a power-lifting panel on the starboard side of the hull. Raise it, and the Williams 285 Jet Tender slides out on rollers and launches itself. Zeelander has been building this 55-footer since 2016, but has continued to evolve the specs. The latest version—this flag blue–hulled stunner recently delivered to a buyer in Norwalk, Connecticut—comes

At the press of a button, the transom hinges backward to create a large swim platform. Speaking of pressing buttons, another will lower the curved glass window separating the aft deck from the galley. Here there are three fixed barstools at the ready for those sunset cocktails. Step into the shade of the air-conditioned pilothouse to enjoy raised sofa seating around the central dining table and 360-degree views for everyone. Just like that

Bentley, the sunroof also opens up, ideal for a little nighttime stargazing. Below deck there’s a trio of cabins. The master is amidships and, amazingly, boasts 6 feet 7 inches of headroom and a bed that measures 6 feet 10 inches long. (Remember, the Dutch, on average, are the world’s tallest people.) Up in the bow is the spacious VIP suite with a bed set on the diagonal to increase the usability of the floor area. Next to it, to starboard, is a compact twin-bunk cabin that’s perfect for kids. Talking of kids, the lack of handrails around the deck, or a pulpit on the bow for safe anchor handling, would be my only concern. But as every Zeelander, from the “starter” 44 to the best-selling 72, is custombuilt, anything is possible. And there’s no need to head to the company’s headquarters in Groot-Ammers, east of Rotterdam, to come up with your wish list. Earlier this year, Zeelander opened its new U.S. headquarters in Fort Lauderdale—naturally—with a full-time sales and service staff. As for pricing, the conversation starts at around $3 million. But as for owning the prettiest yacht on the water? That’s priceless. «

COURTING GRAND SLAM WINNER SONYA “SOFIA” KENIN TAKES TENNIS TO THE NEXT LEVEL BY LINDA MARX

T

ennis is a game of mental toughness. Or as Billie Jean King, the former world number one professional tennis player and winner of 39 Grand Slams, put it, “Tennis is a perfect combination of violent action taking place in an atmosphere of total tranquility.” Into that atmosphere steps Moscow-born, Florida-bred Sonya “Sofia” Kenin, whose discipline, focus, feistiness, and competitive spirit combine to make the next great champion. At 21 years old (she turns 22 this month), Kenin is the fourth-ranked Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) player in the world. In the U.S., she is ranked number one—ahead of Serena Williams. On February 1, Kenin won the Australian Open Women’s Championship in Melbourne Park, Australia, making her the youngest American to win a Grand Slam women’s singles title since Williams did it in 1999. A month later (before the onset of the coronavirus pandemic), Kenin won her fifth WTA singles title at the Lyon Open in France.

South Floridabred Sofia Kenin has a careerhigh Women’s Tennis Association ranking of number four in in the world.

go pro. I was excited about living the American Dream.” Under Macci’s tutelage, Kenin appeared in tennis training videos and showcased her skills at conventions and exhibitions. Her former coach says some were skeptical about his enthusiasm for this young girl who—at first glance— didn’t really stand out. “People said, ‘No way—she is too little,’” Macci recalls. “But when they saw how talented she was, the way she competed, her focus, her timing, her ability to go for the jugular, they changed their minds.” These days, Alex is Kenin’s sole coach. Despite the dad-daughter dynamic, Kenin says her dad is “super smart,” always generating ideas, and solving problems. “My dad always travels with me and helps me mentally,” she says. For Alex, what is equally as important as building upon his daughter’s tennis skills is his role in helping her develop a solid foundation that keeps both her talent and personal growth under control. “Coaching your daughter can be tricky,” he says. “Often I have to draw the line. But as she has gotten older, we have found a balance.” That balance includes education. During her school years, Kenin did a combination of in-class and at-home schooling. But as the road trips increased, a by-the-bell school schedule became impossible to keep up with. “We kept her in school as long as possible,” says Alex. “But tournaments took her away, and it was tough to fit in her learning. So we did it at home, which worked out well.” In 2013, Kenin started playing low-level tournaments on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) circuit and won her first two professional matches at age 14. She finished the 2017 season ranked 108 in the world. Then 2018 came, and with it her best season yet: ending with an impressive ranking of 52, her first top 100 finish. By the time she won the Australian Open earlier this year, fans from around the world were glued to her every move and were eager for her autograph. “I was speechless and happy, there was so much emotion that day,” Kenin says of the win. “I watched my idols play and the whole crowd was cheering. I had butterflies. I love my fans, they boost me, they cheered for me.” Even Billie Jean King—who calls Kenin “fearless”—texted her during the Australian Open. The two women had met during the 2019 off-season when they were in New York for the filming of “Thank You Notes,” a Katie Couric-produced web series that matches an established icon with a rising star in the same sport or business. “Billie Jean inspires me so much. She has given me great advice, and even

Last year—after winning multiple singles and doubles tournaments and earning a top 20 ranking—the plucky pro was named the WTA’s Most Improved Player of the Year. “I have so much excitement before a tournament,” says Kenin, who admits she is hard on herself. “I do have nerves. I have to do well. I want to win. I need to win.” Kenin was 3 years old when her father saw the early hints of her tennis talents. “I was watching my daughter play tennis against a garage door,” says dad and coach Alex Kenin. “I noticed that she had unusual hand-eye coordination, so I took her to a park for more play and discovered that she was better than most of the others.” By her fifth birthday, Kenin’s family had moved from Moscow to New York to Pembroke Pines—where the tennis prodigy easily took to figuring out her dad’s tennis racket by hitting a torrent of tennis balls. Her father introduced her to tennis legend Rick Macci, who has coached Serena and Venus Williams, Andy Roddick, Jennifer Capriati, Maria Sharapova, and other notable stars of the sport. Macci coached Kenin for the next seven years—from age 5 to 12—seeing her a few times a week. Alex, a self-taught coach, worked with her the other days. “I never taught kids that young back then,” says Macci, owner of the Rick Macci Academy and Tennis Center in Boca Raton. “But Sonya was unique and uncanny. She could just focus, and eventually had a backswing to South Beach! The way she timed the ball, she already had rhythm. She was the scariest little creature I ever saw.” At age seven, Kenin’s tennis life began to take shape. She developed a fierce drop shot—hitting the ball softly so it lands just over and close to the net—which Macci calls “one of the best” on the pro tour. “She likes to trick her opponent like a point guard in basketball,” Macci says. “She can do this 10 to 15 times in a match. She knows and understands the geometry of the court.” By 2005, Kenin began playing in singles tournaments in the United States Tennis Association (USTA)’s Girls 10-and-under division. In less than 18 months, she was ranked number one in Florida—a ranking she repeated in the USTA National Girls 12, 14, 16, and 18-and-under divisions. She won tournament after tournament, including multiple Super National Junior Tournaments and excelled in international competition. “I loved playing, I enjoyed all of it,” says Kenin, who was lucky to be able to hit balls early in her career with the likes of Anna Kournikova, Jim Courier, Kim Clijsters, Venus Williams, and John McEnroe. “I liked the process and wanted to 50 FORT LAUDERDALE ILLUSTRATED

explained how to best deal with pressure,” says Kenin, who wrote her a personal thank you note on behalf of women tennis players everywhere. “She has been really encouraging. I look up to her.” Says King: “Sofia is a strong, kind, and confident player who is coming into her own. She definitely has the makings of a champion and has already shown she can win. She is a great competitor and is mentally and emotionally tough. She thrives on pressure and is willing to pay the price in both preparation and execution of her game plan. She is very intense, focused, and never out of a match because she knows how to finish.” Kenin takes that kind of praise to heart. In the little time that she spends at home in Pembroke Pines, her schedule remains disciplined. She practices tennis five out of seven days per week—often twice a day— and keeps a strict fitness regimen of strength conditioning, stretching, and sprints. If there is a match in South Florida, she goes to bed early. Otherwise, she gives herself until 10 p.m. on weekends. When she’s on the road with Alex, Kenin says she misses her mom, Lena, and her sister, Anya. And as much as Lena loves and admires her daughter, she doesn’t watch her matches on TV. “My mom is too nervous,” Kenin admits. “She doesn’t watch me play at all.” On the off-night when tennis is not the number one priority, Kenin is just like any other 20-something—preferring to lay in bed and watch Netflix. She also loves movies, music (especially the rapper Drake), posting on her Instagram account, hanging with friends and her sister, going to the beach, shopping, and traveling. But with her career on fire at the moment, there are more days on than off right now. And Kenin is okay with that. In fact, her advice for other tennis players is to be inflexible in their dedication to the sport. For those who want to excel, she believes they must “love it, enjoy the battle, stick to it, ignore the negativity,” and be the best possible player so their dreams can come true. “Sonya is stubborn, has backbone, and is ferociously competitive,” says Macci. “She knows how to compete, and I think she will rise to the top. She is already a better role model than any other American player.” «

Thanksgiving dinner with family and friends takes on an Italian twist for chef Angelo Elia By Melissa Puppo | Photography by Giovanna Elia

hile it may seem untraditional for Italians to celebrate Thanksgiving, the holiday has become the biggest fête of the year for the Elia family stateside. Angelo Elia—the award-winning chef behind countless restaurant concepts in South Florida—and his wife, Denise, open up their home to family, friends, and coworkers each year. To show thanks for navigating the unique challenges of 2020, the Elias welcomed loved ones to a Thanksgiving dinner oozing with Italian flair. “Being immigrants, coming to America, and integrating with its culture has a special meaning for us on Thanksgiving,” Denise says. “Angelo’s family is in Italy. My family is in Brazil. We work so many hours together that you become family with the people you work with. And 52

a lot of them also don’t have family here, so we are a whole bunch of pilgrims together.” Born in Salerno, Italy, Angelo’s passion for cooking began at home under his mother’s wing. She instilled in her 9-year-old son the traditional ways to make classic dishes. Angelo says he incorporates her recipes and techniques into his menus daily. Angelo moved to the United States at 14 years old with a dream to become a chef. After 16 years of grueling work in New York’s fast-paced restaurant industry, he moved to South Florida, where he met Denise at a restaurant called Julia’s in Boca Raton. The Brazilian native was attending cosmetology school at the time, and also worked in the res-

Along the way, Denise has become her husband’s biggest supporter and business partner, working alongside him as director of all front-of-the-house operations and overseeing special event planning. After working for Unique Restaurants in Boca and Aventura, Angelo moved to Fort Lauderdale to open Café Tutto Bene and the original H2O on the beach. He later opened Café Angelo, which is now known as Casa D’Angelo. The revered high-end Italian concept has stood at the same locale in Lauderdale for more than 22 years. “The people who come to my restaurant are local guests,” says Angelo. “They have been coming for years, and we are known for quality, great food, and great service.” In addition to an outpost in Boca Raton and at the Atlantis Hotel in Paradise Island, Bahamas, in the fall of 2019 Angelo welcomed the third location of Casa D’Angelo in Aventura Park Square. It’s all about quality over anything.” To kick off the Elia family turkey day festivities, Angelo and Denise welcomed friends, family, and coworkers to their modern Intracoastal home in

Overseeing the table holiday settings, Denise says she likes to use festive fall colors and textures like orange-colored plates and rattan chargers. She’s careful, she says, not to overload the table with decor, leaving plenty of room for food and wine. “I prefer it to be casual, so everyone feels at home,” Denise says. She also enlists help from Ann’s Florist on Las Olas for her flower arrangements. “I usually order small squares on the tables,” she says. “When everyone goes home, I like to give them the flowers. Even though our house is modern, I like to bring a little traditional Thanksgiving look to it.” As the main courses baked and bubbled in the oven, guests helped themselves to a beautiful tray of antipasti complete with sliced meats, cheeses, and bakery-fresh breads. main course—which is based on the traditional American Thanksgiving menu. “Angelo loves the American Thanksgiving tradition,” says Denise, who is also a crucial team member for day-of cooking. Still, the family also likes to incorporate one non-traditional item on the menu. Last year they cooked up wild boar. This year, it’s porchetta (a boneless pork roast) prepared two ways (rolled up and flat) with fennel pollen that had the guests in awe. To pair with the meats, Kersemans chose a Belle Glos Clark and Telephone Vineyard pinot noir. A second wine—a 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajá—was passed around for guests to enjoy as they sat for dinner. The grand table spread featured lasagna with a fresh tomato béchamel and homemade mozzarella, which Denise says is a staple for Italians. The family also prepared a dizzying array of sides, including roasted Brussels sprouts with walnuts and a vintage balsamic glaze, roasted fennel with olives and cherry tomatoes, pan-fried polenta with Parmigiano-Reggiano, and pumpkin soup with roasted sunflower seeds and chestnuts.

Planning large-scale dinners is the norm for Denise and Angelo. Over the past 17 years, the couple has hosted PACE Center for Girls Broward at their flagship Casa D’Angelo for the “Taste of Italy” wine tasting reception, which features an auction and four-course dinner, and raises funds for at-risk girls. They have also partnered and donated wine-paired dinners that are auctioned at fundraisers for organizations like the Humane Society of Broward County, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Broward County, March of Dimes, and Taste of the Nation. “We feel privileged to live in such a beautiful place and have the support of this amazing community,” says Denise, who is also a founding member of FAB (Funding Arts Broward). “We feel it is our duty to give back to those supporters. More than ever, we have to work together to strengthen our community and those in need.” After dinner, guests made their way outdoors for views of the Intracoastal while enjoying some alfresco mingling as Denise prepared dessert, which included Basque burnt cheesecake with fresh berries, pear and ricotta cake, and freshly baked pumpkin tarts. It’s a sweet end to what Denise admits has been a challenging year. “More than ever, we’re thankful to gather this Thanksgiving,” she says. « FORTLAUDERDALEILLUSTRATED.COM | NOVEMBER 2020

HOME TEAM Former Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino and his wife, Claire, are at home in their newly renovated residence in Weston By Marina Brown | Photography by Deborah Whitlaw

I

t’s not the first time that interior designer Phyllis Taylor has teamed up with NFL Hall of Famer Dan Marino and his wife, Claire. From a 15,000-square-foot estate to their newly renovated 3,000-square-foot ranch-style house in Weston (and many in between), Taylor has made it her business to know the colors, the favorite

pieces, and the lifestyle of one of South Florida’s most famous families. With six children, the Marinos have traditionally needed a lot of space. But these days, the older children are on their own, and the two youngest are in college. Turns out that even sports legends decide to downsize at some point—and Taylor has

made sure the Marinos’ new scaled-down digs feel just as luxurious (and more intimate) as the larger homes they’ve shared over the years. Though they’ve reduced their square footage, the family wanted to keep an open feeling in their home. Taylor made sure their most cherished possessions—and their love for dramatic color palettes—found their place in the new setting. The original structure was built in the early 1990s, so Taylor gave it a modern makeover: eliminating the outdated popcorn ceilings and most of the interior walls, and creating a distinct entry transition into the living area. The home’s outdoor foyer provides a unique space before guests even reach the front door. Framed with wide-striped draperies from Jeffery Michaels, it doubles as a pleasant place to take in sunsets. From there, a small living area gives way to the kitchen—where Taylor created a unique custom solution of elevated drawers atop a large island counter. “The drawers serve as convenient catchalls,” explains Taylor. “The elevation gives more counter space, as well as hides the disorder from 62

meal preparation.” The Marinos’ ability to reimagine their beloved pieces in new environments set the stage in both the living area and family room, anchored by “Syrian” chairs that pay homage to the Middle East. A green and white area rug from Niba expands patterns into ellipses and curves. From the pass-through in the kitchen, guests can take a seat at the dining room’s British Colonial dining table. An imposing walnut chest from Normandy stands as a proud period piece in a twenty-first-century setting. Overhead, there’s an iconically French white wooden chandelier. A Foo dog sculpture and Chinese faience offer their own versions of chinoiserie in the eclectic space. The master bedroom is bursting with color: Taylor balanced the strength of Phillip Jeffries’ coral grasscloth wall

covering with patterns that tempt the eye, including a Stark rug in interlocking tracery. The custom oversized bed by Ralph Lauren provides the perfect restful respite, upholstered in plush leather, and covered in pale embroidered linen from Niba. In the newly enlarged master bath, Taylor incorporated a dressing room that leads to an ample closet. With gray marble flooring to match the marble mosaic of the walls, the coral-colored covered bench becomes the star of the dressing space. After completing half a dozen design projects for the Marino family, Taylor says that “with 22 years as friends and collaborators, we think along the same lines.” With Taylor on their team, those lines have led the Marinos home once again. «

A sunburst mirror adds shimmer to the master bedroom’s coral-hued grasscloth walls (opposite page); A Serena & Lily bench, in addition to a scalloped ceiling fixture and wall sconces, add an elegant touch to the master bath.

EAT DRINK

By Melissa Puppo

Sweet Rustic Bake Shop will debut pumpkin bars and iced pumpkin scones (below) on its menu this month.

BAKE SHOP

SWEET Confections There’s something heavenly about the alluring aromas wafting from inside Sweet Rustic Bake Shop. Warm, flaky, vanilla bean cream-filled cruffins (croissants shaped like muffins) and strawberry-flavored pop tarts dressed in a vanilla glaze with sprinkles are just two of the specialties owner Neida Billings makes in-house. Her passion for baking at home for her children inspired the northern Fort Lauderdale outpost. Originally from New Jersey, Billings says she always aspired to open a bakery that resembled the ones she grew up visiting in New York. “One of the things I wanted to do was make sure the

077_EatDrinkOpen_1120.indd 77

things I carried in my shop were different,” notes Billings, who gathers recipes from all around, such as her sticky toffee pudding cakes inspired by her travels in England. Baked goods like snickerdoodle cookies and sticky buns often rotate with the seasons, allowing Billings to welcome new creations. Be sure to stop by Sweet Rustic this month to enjoy the flavors of fall in the form of pumpkin pie bars and pumpkinflavored scones and muffins. Specialorder pies for Thanksgiving, ranging from pumpkin to apple crumb to cranberry pear crumb, are also available for pickup. (sweetrusticbakeshop.com)

EAT DRINK FOOD HALL

New to the Neighborhood Explore Sistrunk Marketplace’s HOTTEST EATERIES

Sistrunk Boulevard just got a whole lot livelier with the addition of Sistrunk Marketplace. Steven Dapuzzo of Society 8 Hospitality Group spearheaded this unique concept, which includes a food hall, a brewery, event spaces, a boutique called SistrunKollective, and Wired Sound Academy. Despite all these avenues, the main draw is the food, with 13 diverse options and counting. Cuisines abound in the form of Nashville hot chicken from Nellie’s Southern Kitchen to veggie norimaki rolls from Heavenly Raw to waffle cones filled with ice cream and toppings by Kasai + Koori. An Aussie-style coffee house is also on-site. Here, we highlight three of the hottest vendors to check out during your next visit. (sistrunkmarketplace.com) Sistrunk’s Main Bar

POKE OG

Known for creating serious flavor combinations inside Miami’s 1-800 Lucky food hall, Poke OG has made its way north, bringing its build-your-own bowls along for the ride. The chef-driven concept uses local ingredients from area farmers to deliver hefty portions of vegan watermelon, traditional Hawaiian fare, and lobster poke with truffled white soy. Go for the signature Hybrid OG for a colorful bowl bursting with salmon, tuna, sweet onions, edamame, green onion, jalapeño, and fried onion, all tossed in spicy OG sauce over brown rice.

OSOM CREPES It’s no surprise the name of this creperie sounds similar to “awesome;” the creations that come out of this vendor are out of this world. Take your pick of savory crepes stuffed with braised short rib or prosciutto di Parma, mozzarella, parmesan, cherry tomatoes, and arugula with rosemary olive oil and balsamic glaze. Or opt for the Master to enjoy a sweet rendition with Nutella, banana slices, almonds, ice cream, whipped cream, and cocoa powder.

HOT LIME

Taco aficionados should head to Hot Lime by Daniel Gonzalez and Carlos Padilla. A bright red Volkswagen Airstream bus (helmed by two skeleton drivers) leads the way to flavorful Argentinian street tacos made-to-order with double tortillas. Chipotle Chick is a winner alongside classic Peruvian ceviche. 78

CRAFT COCKTAILS

Behind the BAR

A local favorite, The Wilder in Fort Lauderdale serves up creative cocktails inside its posh, three-room lounge. We tapped bartender Zara Kopet to dish on behind-the-bar secrets and provide insight into what to make during the fall season. (intothewilder.com) Special Ingredient At The Wilder, my favorite ingredient to work with is mascarpone cheese. It changes the whole consistency of the cocktail, and guests are always surprised to see it on our menu. Bartending Hidden Talent I can stir and shake two different cocktails at the same time. It’s basically a superpower.

At-Home Nightcap Negronis forever Cocktail Go-To The old-fashioned. It is the most popular cocktail and also the easiest to mess up. It’s a very simple cocktail with whiskey, bitters, sugar, and an expressed orange peel.

Sincerely, The Wilder 1 1/2 oz. Woodford Reserve Bourbon 1 oz. fig- and chai tea-infused sweet vermouth 1/4 oz. St. George Spiced Pear Liqueur

Ideal Fall Sip “Sincerely, The Wilder” is a fan favorite at our bar, and the flavor profile complements a gorgeous fall day.

Stir ingredients and serve up in a coupe glass. Garnish with dehydrated pear and fig flag.

EAT DRINK

While white wines are often suggested with fish, powerful reds can also be a pleasant pairing.

OFF THE VINE

To Pair or Not to Pair?

When it comes to food and wine pairings, it’s often best to GO WITH YOUR GUT By Mark Spivak It’s one of the oldest ongoing debates: Which wine goes best with which food? The question itself presupposes that there is an ideal match, and the concept of food and wine pairing has been propagated by both the wine industry and generations of sommeliers—largely because it increases wine consumption. Recently, though, some wellinformed people have been claiming that the concept is a myth. The debunking process probably began with the 1989 publication of Red Wine with Fish by Joshua Wesson and David Rosengarten. Master of Wine Tim Hanni has gone further, proclaiming that food and wine pairing is based on a set of “delusions.” There’s some scientific evidence to back up his claim. We now know that the human tongue contains between 2,000 and 5,000 taste buds, and each of those harbors between 50 to 100 taste receptors; obviously, the range is so wide that no two people

can experience taste the same way. Here, we outline some of the leading myths. Foie gras and Sauternes are a classic, perfect match: If you think about it logically, it’s a terrible idea. Would you eat a chocolate éclair or a hot fudge sundae in the middle of a meal, between the fish and meat courses? If not, why compromise your palate with one of the sweetest wines on earth? It’s not exactly classic, either; the combination was unknown prior to the early 1960s, and the owner of Château d’Yquem reportedly doesn’t endorse it. A meal should progress from white to red and from lighter to more full-bodied wines: Not necessarily. Many professional wine tastings begin with full-bodied reds and conclude with whites so that the acidity in white wine can rejuvenate the palate. In dinner as in life, not everything is linear. A dessert wine should always be sweeter than the dessert it accompanies: Given

the intense concentration of sugar in many desserts, it’s almost impossible to find a sweeter wine to accompany them. This theory is based on the idea that food and wine should complement (rather than contrast) each other. At the end of a meal, when your palate is dulled by eating and drinking for several hours, some contrast is welcome. Certain foods are impossible to pair with wine: The culprits are asparagus, artichokes, brussels sprouts, broccoli, and cabbage, all of which have high levels of sulfur. While difficult, a match is far from impossible. Try acidic and herbaceous wines such as Gruner Veltliner, Sauvignon Blanc, and Vermentino. Looking for ways to improve your pairing experience? Try these common-sense tips. Drink what you like: You’ll be amazed at the results. If you’re a fan of big, powerful reds, you’ll discover they’re not bad with poached fish. If you’re at a loss, try to match

the weight and texture of the dish with the weight and texture of the wine. Make adjustments when necessary: A pinch of salt or a spritz of lemon will remove most of the bitterness from a dish and make a wine seem more palatable. When in doubt, drink Champagne: Here in the U.S., we tend to reserve Champagne for special occasions and only consume it before dinner; in France, they drink it all the time and throughout their meals. It has an incredible range of food pairings. Brut Champagne goes well with everything from caviar and oysters to fried chicken and macaroni and cheese. Rosé is perfect with spicy foods, duck, charcuterie, game, lamb, and steak. Remember that context is everything: Kendall-Jackson Chardonnay with the one you love can be magical. 1982 Château Mouton Rothschild with your worst enemy can easily taste like dishwater. «

WEALTH

Now & Then

How the economic woes associated with COVID-19 differ from setbacks suffered during the GREAT RECESSION By Judy Martel When the forced economic shutdown from the coronavirus pandemic plunged the country into recession during the second quarter of 2020, many were plagued by uncomfortable recollections of the last catastrophic downturn just over a decade ago, the Great Recession of 2007 to 2009. While there are some similarities between the COVID-19 recession and the Great Recession, economist Sean Snaith, director of the Institute for Economic Forecasting at the University of Central Florida, notes that it’s the differences that are most significant. “The two are similar in the sense that both were severe contractions in the economy,” he says. “The COVID-19 recession was deeper but much shorter by comparison. Both were the deepest since the Great Depression [the longest recession on record, stretching a decade or more, beginning in 1929 with the stock market crash].” However, Snaith notes that the COVID-19 recession stands apart from any recession in U.S. history in that it was self-inflicted. Recessions are typically the result of financial instability in some part of the economy that instigates a sharp decline for at least a few

months. But the COVID-19 recession was the result of the government’s response to a health crisis that forced it to pull the plug on large segments of the economy, mainly tourism, hospitality, entertainment, and manufacturing. “Masses of people were thrown into unemployment in a matter of just two months, and the government lacked the infrastructure to process all those claims,” says Snaith. Contrast that with the Great Recession, which was largely attributed to the collapse of the housing market that then rippled throughout the credit markets. “Subsequently, it also weighed on the economic recovery, because it was such a historic destruction in home equity wealth,” continues Snaith. While relatively few people invest in the stock market, many more view their home as a way to build financial stability over time because, historically, housing prices steadily rose year after year. When home values tanked, “suddenly, across the socioeconomic spectrum, people saw their wealth collapse.” Making it worse was the slow recovery. “In Florida, it took nearly 10 years for prices to get back to prerecession levels. In the meantime, the economy worsened because consumer spending was dampened.”

During the COVID-19 recession, the stock market took an immediate nosedive in March, but then rebounded within four months after the initial crash, leaving many investors scratching their heads as they observed the fallout of high unemployment and lost business income in the wake of the pandemic shutdown. “The stock market is always forward-looking, while economic data is a glimpse in the rearview mirror,” Snaith explains. “The stock market responds to what’s happening in the future and doesn’t take as long to recover as the housing market. Stocks are reflecting the fact that COVID-19 is not going to be an issue forever.” The labor market, however, will take time to recover, Snaith adds. “Many businesses, particularly small businesses, will not survive because they lacked the cash reserves to ride it out.” Other larger companies will not come out on the other end because they were already on the edge. The good news, he notes, is that the federal government responded to the COVID-19 recession quickly, approving some $3 trillion to pump into the economy within the first couple of months, although he calls the initial stimulus checks for individuals a “bandage on a deep bruise.” Looking forward, investors can take heart in the fact that low interest rates will help feed the economy back to healthy levels, though there could still be some lingering hurt. Certain sectors will take a

while to recover, but timing the market is risky and pulling out at the wrong moment can be disastrous. In times of uncertainty, the safest option is simply to wait on making any significant decisions. “If investors let fear dictate, they generally will lose,” Snaith says. “For example, if you got out of the market in March or April, you would have taken a huge hit. An investor’s portfolio structure should reflect where they are in life, but generally speaking, the best strategy is to do nothing. Riding it out is the smart play.” «

PAINT THE TOWN While on the search for new art around town, be sure to stop by Virginia Shuman Young Elementary School in Victoria Park, which recently unveiled the largest school mural in Broward County. Painted by Fabio Onrack, the vibrant mural depicts two kids playing telephone via cups and string, and is visible to the public on the school’s south façade facing Broward Boulevard. The artwork is part of a larger initiative spearheaded by Maxence Doytier, creative director of Twenty6North Productions, who partnered with the Broward Education Foundation to promote creativity and the arts through a series of murals. In addition to Onrack, several local artists—including Carlos Solano, Aaron Bodden, Eric Karbeling, and Steven Teller—were tapped to breathe new life to the school’s exterior and interior spaces. With the community’s support, Doytier plans to raise $100,000 to paint 7,500 square feet of surface area at Virginia Shuman Young; a portion will fund the public school’s arts program.
