the international influences that drive design, architecture and building in this tropical paradise. EDITOR’S MESSAGE

A CURATED MIX This issue of Florida Design Naples Edition uniquely combines luxury lifestyle content to present a curated mix of elite designers, representing a host of different styles that inspire. Inside these pages, we bring you 12 diverse homes, each with its own design aesthetic. Such is the case with our cover story, a modern 7,565-square-foot home with views of San Carlos Bay on Fort Myers Beach. Residential designer Richard Guzman and interior designer Faith Fix joined builder Aidan Weir to create an orchestrated mix of organic materials such as concrete, wood, glass and stone, for a clean, contemporary look. “The architectural style is modern, but with a warm twist,” Guzman says. The Gulf Coast’s beautiful azure water provides the backdrop for a nearly 10,800-square-foot estate on Marco Island overlooking Caxambas Bay. Interior designer Jinx McDonald’s team paired with architect Jonathan Kukk and builder Mark Smith to capture the perfect balance. “The home’s style is a mix of classic Old Florida with relaxed coastal elegance,” Smith says. “It emulates the architectural features often found in Old Florida homes, while the coastal flair comes in with the color palette, trim styles and interior accents.” When it came time for one couple to accentuate their substantial collection of artwork, they turned to architect Robert Hersoce and interior designer Laura Ramsey Engler to implement a design that presents its own artistic statement. Boasting an appreciation of modern architecture both inside and out, this 5,000-square-foot home in Naples goes back and forth between the art, sculptural furnishings and, of course, the architecture. “It is more like an orchestra with all of the different players,” Herscoe says. In honor of the 2019 annual Sand Dollar Awards presented by the Collier Building Industry Association (CBIA), Florida Design Naples Edition congratulates this year’s winners and participants as we take a sneak peek inside the glamorous event hosted at Naples’ Ritz-Carlton, Golf Resort. Consistently, and undeniably, better always wins. Our experiences have proven this philosophy time and time again. It is the core of our culture and the heart of everything we do. And how we do it. From residential and commercial construction to interior design and property management. We know how our competitors do things, and we find ways of doing them better. That’s why clients choose us to begin with.

GLASS ACT Bavarian artisan Rike Scholle handcrafts highly sophisticated glass lighting objects that seem to be frozen in motion, such as Medusa (2019), a blown crystal glass sculpture on view at Habatat Galleries. “Life and vitality inspire me,” the artist says. “Hot glass is my material and my passion. Most of my creations become light objects, because light ultimately brings glass to life.”

ARTISTRY of GLASS From fire to fascination, vibrant compositions reflect an exploration of color and fluidity through shaping glass into sculpture

Pastellar from artist ROB STERN’S signature Windstar series balances geometry and fluidity by capturing the invisible force of wind on its appendages.

Originally designed by RENÉ LALIQUE in 1933, the crystal “Mossi” vase with its frosted base exemplifies modernity. Swedish artist and designer FRIDA FJELLMAN’S Lustre aux Couleurs de la Forêt intrigues with the decadent beauty of hand-blown crystals laced dreamily to one another by chains.

Painted with precious metals, the unique, fused glass bowls by artist GORDANA TURUK are delicately handcrafted so no two will be exactly alike.

DALE CHIHULY’S vibrant Mandarin Orange Basket embodies the artist’s visionary dialogue of form, color and space as a saturation of deep orange gracefully transitions to transparency.

Sculptor LATCHEZAR BOYADJIEV’S Torso III evokes the sensual undulations of the female figure in its pursuit of the perfect flow of form. Five twisting glass spires create the spring-like storm of blues, greens and yellows that color Extreme Pollinators by artist GINNY RUFFNER. 66 FLORIDA DESIGN’S NAPLES EDITION 4-1

ARTURO SAMANIEGO As he was approaching 40 years of age, Arturo Samaniego found himself at a crossroads in life. On the one hand, there was the computer business he had built and grown over 15 years of hard work. On the other, he had a passion to become a full-time artist. He felt a growing urgency inside to make a lifestyle change that seemed very risky, but one that promised fulfillment in the pursuit of his true calling in life. The decision was very difficult and the personal cost was high; but the thing about artists is they don’t really have a choice. They must create art if they are to really live and be true to themselves. Today, Arturo is a thriving artist with a full-time studio in Naples, Fla. His work has been shown and represented by galleries around the country, and his work is in collections all over the globe. He admits a lifestyle change like the one he made is not for everyone. But every time one of his paintings is purchased and displayed in the home of a new collector, he feels validated that his decision was the

right one.

CALUSA BAY DESIGN Interior Design of the Year, $5.5M+ To create the “soft contemporary” style that makes this $7 million estate home look incredible, a combination of light and dark wood finishes is used throughout. The great room is a spectacular space to entertain with a custom, stained maple stepped ceiling that features LED accent lighting around the perimeter. Every detail in this home was strategically considered to create a space that is inviting, comfortable and impressive.

Best Kitchen Design, $5.5M+ Created by both Calusa Bay and Knauf-Koenig Group to be unique and different, this kitchen features custom, stained maple wood cabinetry with the island topped in one large single slab of Cristallo quartzite and a hood that blends into the culinary space. A butler’s pantry is hidden behind so food prep is functional yet unseen. Counter-to-ceiling windows allow for a bright view of the garden fountain courtyard beyond.

KNAUF-KOENIG GROUP Product Design of the Year, $5.5M+ A new definition of luxury living in Pelican Bay, this residence is a coastal contemporary take on the British West Indies-style home. The exterior is delineated with connecting brackets made of cypress wood that stretch from the roof to the face of the home to add dimension and interest. Natural tones and textures present a striking presentation that seamlessly transitions to the outdoor living area.

CLIVE DANIEL HOME Interior Design of the Year, $2.5M-$3.0M This luxury waterfront residence with its own boat slip captivates with Old Florida cottage-style architecture, and a clean, fresh and contemporary Ralph Lauren approach for the interior scheme. The designers focused on fun by adding different textures, contrasting earth tones with splashes of color to create an inviting and edgy coastal setting complete with luxury furnishings and custom art.

RENEE GADDIS INTERIORS Interior Design of the Year, $3.0M-$3.5M Muted, crisp tones put a chic twist on this beachside condo carefully designed to echo the ebb and flow of the surf splashing on the sand. White and neutral hues pair with warm and dusty wood tones to bring the illusion of Neapolitan sand inside. The quiet blues and textures in the tile and artwork give shape to the rhythm of the ocean and pattern of the everchanging clouds. Touches of brass accent the calming atmosphere.

FICARRA DESIGN ASSOCIATES Interior Design of the Year, $4.0M-$4.5M Directly reflecting the artistic attributions of the owner’s personal style, this 5th Ave. South condo is all about color. A vibrant palette and clean lines in furniture silhouettes create a strong visual impact when walking through the door. While each area has its own story to tell, from the bright social spaces to the privacy of the master suite, all the elements work in harmony to create this delightful home in the center of the bustling downtown Naples area.

STOFFT COONEY ARCHITECTS Product Design of the Year, $5.5M+ Beautiful and private with 130 feet of water frontage, this estate home boasts stunning bay views from the expansive great room. Wood flooring flows throughout the main living areas, where walls of glass open to a spacious lanai with outdoor kitchen and sundeck. A natural black bottom lagoon-style pool and spa beckons one to enjoy Naples luxurious lifestyle at its finest.

and elegant. The goal: to make this expansive home feel intimate; to be comfortable yet polished; to accentuate the natural light. KUKK ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN Nestled on a peninsular location with endless views, this unique Southern Marco site on Caxambas Bay was large enough to allow for creativity and to design a house so grounded within the generous landscape. The deep lot allows for a lengthy procession entry interconnected by walkway features, cap rock landscape beds and an entry stone-clad runway. The home’s styling is tropical with a transitional interior. Sky blue soffits and white trim reflect a more traditional note; but the design is all about the views both natural and architectural.

ramatic natural backdrops are a dime a dozen in the Maldives, rendering design as a prime differentiator between a good, great and exceptional Maldivian resort. Taking full advantage of the

island nation’s blue-ombre waters, biodiverse sandy shallows, and palm-laced parcels without overpowering them with man-made excess requires a fine balancing act, one which Anantara Kihavah-Maldives Villas has superbly achieved. Deep within the country’s most definitive dreamscape, Baa Atoll, the thatched-roof overwater pool villas at Anantara Kihavah honor the vast oceanic surrounds through grand yet unfussy productions of transitional indoor-outdoor space. like the edge of the world. The pool replaces a traditional living area, offering direct access from all nooks: the bedroom’s floor-to-ceiling, retractable glass side doors; the bath’s sunken, glass-bottomed deep-soak tub and sprawling day bed; and the deck’s hanging swing bed and duo of thick, twined hammocks which sway over the ocean blues. A slew of next-generation, greater resort amenities also impress. At the otherworldly underwater restaurant, SEA, glass walls serve as windows to the Baa Atoll’s prolific marine life. Back above water, cocktails are served at the bi-level bar, SKY. On its rooftop lounge, a backless concentric circular daybed with full 180-degree recline lends to unparalleled stargazing. There’s arguably no better place on Earth to let your mind drift to a fantasy galaxy far, far away — or simply revere the one you’re currently in. anantara.com N

BOOKS

A LOOK INSIDE MHK In celebration of his 10th year in business, architect Matthew H. Kragh’s new book offers a sneak peek at many of the homes his firm has designed in Naples TEXT BY KIM MOSLEY

I

nside these pages: The Florida Architect offers a captivating glimpse of nearly 70 brilliantly designed

homes by architect Matthew Kragh, President of MHK Architecture and Planning. Included in the book is Kragh’s personal family home which reflects everything that MHK does best — coastal contemporary with a nod to historic Olde Naples. Inspired by timeless Florida cracker houses that are iconic to the South, MHK takes this historical style and reimagines contemporary coastal architecture in Naples. “MHK houses can be seen on almost every block in Olde Naples and I am extremely proud to be part of the ‘New’ Olde Naples,” Kragh says. “This book is a celebration of 10 years of hard work and I share this tribute with my family, my team, my colleagues and my clients.” For more information, visit mhkap.com. INTERIOR DESIGN BY LAURA RAMSEY ENGLER, RAMSEY ENGLER, LTD., MINNEAPOLIS, MN ARCHITECTURE BY ROBERT HERSCOE AND MICHAEL HAJJAR, HERSCOE HAJJAR ARCHITECTS, NAPLES, FL TEXT BY CHRISTINE DAVIS PHOTOGRAPHY BY LORI HAMILTON, NAPLES, FL

From its spacious, well-manicured lawn to the geometry of the front facade, this modern home makes a striking impression. A custom, feathered plaster finish was created by Christopher O’Guin of O’Guin Decorative Finishes to add unique texture and subtle color contrast to the main body of the home.

ARCHITECTURE FOR ART’S SAKE THIS MODERN HOME IN NAPLES CONVEYS THE OWNERS’ LOVE FOR PAINTING, SCULPTURE AND GLASSWORK IN A GALLERY-LIKE SPACE TAILOR-MADE TO DISPLAY THEIR ART COLLECTION

treasures lie beyond. A vibrant oil on canvas, Mineral by artist Emily Mason, announces entry into the family room.

T

o accentuate his clients’ substantial collection of artwork in this 5,000-square-foot home located in the Moorings community of Naples, architect Robert Herscoe

implemented a design that presents its own artistic statement. “The owners have an appreciation of modern architecture,” Herscoe says. “They have a wide range of interests, and they allowed us the freedom to surprise them.”

The couple wanted a home that was contemporary, welcoming and warm. “While we had

something in mind, it didn’t have a form … and all of a sudden it came alive,” homeowner Diana Lewis says. The artwork does take center stage, but as Herscoe points out, there is interplay. “You go back and forth from looking at the home to looking at the art. It’s more like an orchestra with different players — the artwork, the stairway, the panoramic views from the windows, and even the pool can be considered art,” he says. Serving as the couple’s primary residence, the home reflects an appreciation of modern architecture both inside and out. An open floor plan makes use of clearly defined areas that lend a casual feel. Hallways are kept minimal and function as gallery space. Limestone flooring flows throughout the main living areas and the neutral color palette is enhanced with a variety of artwork that provides pops of color.

10/7/19 9:10 AM

“Going back to that element of surprise, the layout was planned to be slowly revealing,” interior designer Laura Ramsey Engler says. “There’s a slight pause upon entering the foyer … you stop and wonder what’s beyond.” The open floor plan allows for vistas between spaces, as well as light from every direction. “We considered how everyone would move through the spaces, bearing in mind what art would be viewed from certain vantage points,” Ramsey Engler says. “We designed a variety of unique spots for the artwork to live and breathe,” Herscoe adds. Sculpted furnishings in the family room enhance the artwork. A sleek, leather-clad sofa in a buff hue, and a pair of shapely armchairs in brown leather are separated by an origami-like wood accent table. Tucked away, an artistically designed floating stairway ascends gracefully to an upstairs hallway, where an oil painting entitled Anna Maria by Nicola Simbari, one of Italy’s most important 20th-century artists, is displayed on a wall.

“THE HOUSE IS A SERENE BACKDROP FOR ART AND THE FURNISHINGS WHICH HAVE TREMENDOUS PERSONALITY,” INTERIOR DESIGNER LAURA RAMSEY ENGLER SAYS. “THE ARCHITECTURE — A CLEAN, SOPHISTICATED, SUBTLE SHELL — IS THOUGHTFULLY DESIGNED, BUT DOESN’T OVERWHELM.”

To soften rectilinear lines in the living room, a rounded armchair and a Baker accent table, as well as a modular sofa by Thayer Coggin covered in a taupe textured wool blend, were arranged to look pleasing from all angles. A cocktail table created with lacewood “wings” and a walnut base is designed by sculptor Joseph Walsh. Named “Sanagi,” it signifies the blossoming of a caterpillar into a butterfly in Japanese. Near sliding glass doors, Wave Correction, a black patina sculpture of a woman’s head, was created by three Cuban artists collaboratively known as “The Merger.”

In the living room, a double-sided gas ribbon fireplace from DaVinci creates a focal point. The photographic work above the

fireplace, Power Lines in Snow, is a chromogenic print by photographer Magnus Nilsson, who is also a Swedish 2-star Michelin chef. Nearby, a circular sculpture of glass shards created by German glass artist Josepha Gash Muche brings drama to the foyer wall.

The master bath, a tranquil space designed with a soaking tub that looks out onto a lush garden, is kept spare so its artwork can shine. Just steps into the airy master bedroom, an antique Art Deco console joins a Deco-style bed and bedside table to lend visual artistry to the space. Nearby, Kravet’s cocktail ottoman and a pair of wood-trimmed white armchairs with a sleek silhouette create a serene sitting area perfect for rest and relaxation. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide a perfect view of the expansive outdoor area with its sparkling pool and Jacuzzi, and open lanai with summer kitchen. Inside and out, from its state-of-the-art gourmet kitchen to the double-sided fireplace and artful stairway design, this home is truly unique. “I’ve built a handful of modern homes, but nothing quite like this … nothing this intricately designed,” builder Greg Lundstrom says.

The master bath is no exception when it comes to the display of art. An intriguing glass

sculpture, Swimming to San Francisco by artist Jay Musler, adorns a solid outer shower wall. The artist used thin, glass painted strips to reflect the vibrant colors in the ocean and sunlight.

eautifully poised amid two acres of lush tropical landscape, this custom estate home on Marco Island capitalizes on its breathtaking views of Caxambas Bay. Encompassing nearly 10,800 square feet that

includes the porches, terraces and lanai, this magnificent home embodies the classic Florida lifestyle of relaxation and elegance. “When the homeowners first purchased this enchanting lot, their objective was to make this expansive home feel intimate and comfortable, yet polished,” lead interior designer Chrissy Howard says. “These clients have followed Jinx McDonald’s work for a number of years and they knew exactly where to start to build the team that would bring their dream home to life.” Architect Jonathan Kukk joined the team along with builder Mark Smith, who had previously done extensive remodel work for them at their Mediterra home in North Naples. “I was particularly thrilled to get this project because I have always loved the strong cultural history of the land,” McDonald says. “Calusa Indians were the original inhabitants of this area.” Reverence to the land’s beauty is showcased by the lagoon-style pool that pays homage to the natural springs, and lush landscaping that was strategically chosen to represent the native flora of the setting.

“The home’s style is a mix of classic Old Florida with a new coastal twist,” Smith says. “With classic details including lap siding, corner brackets and exposed rafter tails, it emulates the architectural features often found in Old Florida homes. The coastal flair comes in with the color palette, trim styles, interior accents and roof-tile selection.” Inside, several full-size windows and transomed French doors take advantage of the amazing views and natural light. “This home is all about the views,” Kukk says. “It was designed in an island tropical style with transitional interiors. Each space is oriented to the view and the home has different projections to maximize the focus on the waterfront peninsula setting.” The great room is a high-volume and symmetrical living space designed with an integrated stairway and clerestory windows to move light through the room. The color palette is layered in soft neutrals — whites and ivories with calming aqua accents. To capitalize on the grand scale of the room, the design team created custom driftwood stained beams and a custom light fixture that emulates a fisherman’s net stretching 20 feet wide and 10 feet long across the ceiling. “In this open concept plan, it is very important that the dining room feels intimate and distinctive even though it is flanked by the great room and the kitchen,” Howard says. To make the space feel more independent, tongue-and-groove driftwood climbs the wall, crosses the lowered ceiling

and transforms seamlessly into a dry bar with cabinet storage, an under-counter wine cooler, and an antiqued mirror backsplash. Expansive windows offer splendid views of a private garden courtyard off the kitchen and study, while the guest room boasts a breathtaking vista of the bay and surrounding tropical landscape. Outside, a breezy alfresco living space pays homage to the extraordinary beauty of the home’s natural environment. “From the start, we knew this home would have a vintage Florida vibe seasoned with classic components and unconventional surprises around every corner,” Howard says. “Early on, the homeowners said there was nothing we could put inside the house that could compete with what is outside the windows ... the view is the soloist and everything else just needs to harmonize.”

hen residential designer Richard Guzman and interior designer Faith Fix were commissioned to design the

waterfront home of their seasonal client Dick Levi, they had no idea that the collaboration would be one of the most rewarding of their careers. The design duo joined forces with builder Aidan Weir to create a modern home with panoramic views of San Carlos Bay on Fort Myers Beach. “Dick was a dream client, involved and yet trusting and confident of his team,” Fix says. “He likes modern architecture and, being in the boating business, he found the perfect lot for a home on the waterfront.”

“THE HOMEOWNER LIKES A CALMING PRESENCE, JEWEL-TONED BLUES, AND A NICE PLAY OF MATERIALS WHICH MIXES THE MASCULINE WITH THE FEMININE,” INTERIOR DESIGNER FAITH FIX SAYS.

The team collaborated weekly over the two-and-a-half-year project to generate in-depth shop drawings for every system and design element in the home. Working and reworking the specifics until the entire team agreed on every aspect of the design and detailing, this 7,565-square-foot home is an orchestrated mix of organic materials like concrete, wood, glass and stone, resulting in a clean, contemporary look. “The architectural style is modern, but with a warm twist,” Guzman says. Guzman designed the home to ensure that almost every living space has expansive views of the water. Interior designer Lucie Simmons suggested jewel tones of blue and turquoise to accent white, cream and soft gray backgrounds that invite the feeling of the surrounding water inside. Every detail is carefully curated to ensure flow, balance and comfort throughout the home, and to bring a smile to Levi and his guests. The home’s modern design belies many carefully engineered solutions to seamlessly support the streamlined feel. Upon entry, the massive sapele wood door, cleverly balanced on an off-center pivot, makes a huge impact that sets the tone for the rest of the home. “At the touch of a button, the door effortlessly opens, and in a most unexpected way,” Guzman says. The interior doors forgo traditional casings to facilitate a clean look, while hidden pockets accommodate the doors when opened. At once stunning and sleek, the effect draws one’s interest to focus on the views. Similar attention is paid to accommodate the home’s expansive commitment to automation. Integrated

design solutions allow for bespoke yet unobtrusive control of every aspect of the home’s technology. In the foyer, the stairway captivates with stained oak steps and a glass railing that follows a custom rainfall pendant chandelier up a level and around to overlook the main social spaces below. The living area is Guzman’s favorite because of the stunning yet challenging custom DaVinci fireplace, a focal point with a geometric form and textured feel. A variety of materials was used, including stained white oak, quartzite, manmade concrete and white glass. “The rectangular shape of the wood portion is unique and noteworthy,” Guzman says. “The television is carefully concealed within and reveals itself with the touch of a button.” Alongside, a contemporary canvas by a local artist picks up the outdoor colors. Two-tone fabrics pull together blues in the rest of the room to give an abstract water feel to the playful yet sophisticated hearthside setting. In the open dining and kitchen spaces, there are two separate eating areas for practicality. During parties, Levi hosts guests at the dining area’s custom 10-foot-long oak table lined with Vladimir Kagan fishbone chairs, a perfect design for the surrounding water theme. A seamless transition to the kitchen finds soft, gray blue leather-clad metal stools from Holly Hunt at an island styled for more casual fare. “Dick likes both settings,” Fix says. “He uses the

It is all part of the entire great room space with views of the lanai and glass-walled pool through floor-to-ceiling sliders.” Lively conversation ensues as guests take a seat in the lounge area, where the wine room and bar sparkle center stage with understated glamour and an unusual curvilinear design. The custom bar is wrapped in wood cladding with warm materials for texture, while the social area is backlit in all directions to provide charm and cohesiveness. “We added a pop of color to the barstools with teal leather,” Simmons says. Continuing the open-air vibe, the master bath exudes livable luxury with a sculptural soaking tub that overlooks a private patio and outdoor shower. The ceiling, designed in a geometric angular pattern, extends to the master bedroom, where the upholstered headboard wall in a dark gray dimensional fabric gives the illusion of rippling water. “The fabric is beautiful and finished with a modern metal edge,” Guzman says.

The lanai was a challenge because the team had to redesign the structural concrete decks, effectively lowering them beneath the elevation of the finished floor to allow a below-deck drainage system. “We used Esthec decking, a unique material made in Holland that was once offered primarily for boat decking,” Weir says. “The drains are concealed under the synthetic wood deck.” With such attention to detail, Guzman understands why he got some gray hair during this two-and-a-half-year project but concedes that Levi was a “once-in-a-lifetime client who gave us carte blanche to fulfill his vision.” Prioritizing form and function over tradition, and implementing innovative design solutions, the team’s creativity and dedication truly delivered their client’s wish for a modern masterpiece. “It felt like a grand finale,” Fix says. “This home is one of those pinnacle projects you appreciate forever.”

et amid acres of indigenous tropical greenery, rolling pathways for walking and biking, and golf courses in Naples’ exclusive Estuary at

Grey Oaks community, this home’s lush surroundings provided all the inspiration interior designer Jessica Lee needed. “This house was a lot of fun to design,” Lee says. “We always have a little more freedom designing a spec home rather than a private client’s home.” Accordingly, a neutral color palette with accents of gray and mint green seems well-suited to the home. To increase the homey albeit clean feel of the single-story residence, wide-plank, white oak flooring flows above:

“The foyer makes a statement as soon as you step inside,” interior designer

Jessica Lee says. Bernhardt’s console table impresses with its grand scale, while a custom-designed wine room introduces the rest of the home.

throughout the main social areas. For cohesiveness in the spacious 6,027-square-foot, open-concept home, Lee repeated a faux, louvered wood detail in the foyer, great room, dining area and kitchen. An ever-present romantic vibe begins in the foyer as guests are greeted with White

on Gray by artist Sara Brown on one side and beckoned beyond by a glass-enclosed wine room on the other. A warm hearthside setting invites conversation in the great room, where a velvet and linen chaise divides the generously sized seating area into two social groupings. “Because there are two seating groups in the space, we felt that a pair of chandeliers was appropriate,” Lee says. Nearby, columns sheathed with tongue-and-groove planks of ripped oak delineate the formal dining area. “Once the space was defined, it became a very intimate setting,” Lee says. In keeping, a crystal-drop candelabra chandelier softly shimmers above the stained walnut wood dining table. The home’s comfortable farmhouse style merged with modern updates is most evident in the kitchen. For a twist, Lee styled a focal point with a wood, iron and glass hood.

This updated farmhouse kitchen is the perfect gathering place. Counters topped in Cristallo

quartzite from Mediterranean Marble offer a casual spot to sip a morning cup of coffee or enjoy a midday meal. “The kitchen is the hub of the home, and there is ample room at the unusually large island to make it the informal dining area,” Lee says.

Marc Michaels_Stock_NP_082219_type in_KM_FINAL.indd 4

10/7/19 9:38 AM

White custom cabinetry flows from the kitchen into the adjacent family room to provide ample storage for games and media equipment. “With a 15-foot pitch in the ceiling, I was able to add an impressive chandelier featuring modern lines and little glass shades that shine like stars,” the designer says. Pocket glass doors slide open to invite the outdoors into the home. Created to be a sanctuary, the master suite takes up one full wing of the house. The romantic bedroom features a custom coffered ceiling with floating dark wood beams. White linen draperies soften the intimate space, while French doors step out to a private garden patio. The equally sumptuous master bath features opposing his-and-hers white oak and quartzite waterfall vanities, alabaster lights, and limestone flooring polished to a high sheen. As inviting outside as it is indoors, this modern home with a fresh farmhouse edge makes the most of its enviable lifestyle on the Gulf Coast.

nderstanding their vision and making it come alive was the exciting challenge given by homeowners George and Laura Tate to the design duo Rebekah Errett-Pikosky and Charlie

Hansen of Clive Daniel Home. “The clients selected us after seeing our work,” Errett-Pikosky says. “But they needed the home to be completed for a Thanksgiving party and it was already September.” With two in-depth meetings to define a shared concept, followed by a design plan a week later, the Tates and the Clive Daniel team parted with a handshake and a mutual goal. The owners wouldn’t see their newly designed second home until their party in late November.

BENEATH ITS OWN CEILING IN A SMALL, DOME-LIKE FORM, THE BREAKFAST AREA EXUDES A TRANQUIL AMBIENCE. THE DESIGN TEAM SHAPES THE CIRCULAR NICHE WITH A SILVER-LEAF SPHERICAL CHANDELIER ABOVE ARTISTICA’S ROUND, GLASS-TOPPED TABLE.

As if lit for the stage, the kitchen is calm and muted in shades of gray. Beneath a barrel-vaulted ceiling, the granite-topped island is built to scale. Visual Comfort’s light pendants shimmer above the island lined with counter stools from Vanguard Furniture.

Built on a golf course in the exclusive Quail West community of Naples, the 4,700-square-foot home was only three years old. With expansive social spaces, generous private spaces, and a wide loggia and pool area that wraps the entire rear golf-view of the house, much of the kitchen and outside amenities were already state-of the-art. But the Tates’ desire for the blues and aqua hues of a coastal residence would lead the design approach. Now, the spacious living room feels almost intimate with only four white linen-clad chairs and a cocktail table shaping a hearthside setting. Flanking the fireplace, insets backed in “Bohemian Blue” wall covering become a focal point that holds its own against one of the elaborate ceiling elements found in the home. On the other side of the entry hall, the dining room reflects a touch of tradition with a maple dining table, and chairs stained espresso and

set against a soft teal fabric. The Tates added their own contemporary chandeliers in the living and dining rooms, giving the spaces what Errett-Pikosky calls “traditional with an edge.” The back of the house flows from the kitchen to the breakfast area to the sweep of the family room and loggia beyond — each defined by elaborate ceiling architecture. The kitchen, in subtle tones of white and gray, only needed the designers’ addition of elegant pendant vessel lamps and counter stools that match chairs at the breakfast table nestled in a cozy bay just steps away. From a barrel vault in the kitchen to coffered ceilings in the family room and trays in a variety of depths elsewhere, what lies overhead draws the eye. Rather than “compete,” the team designed “into” the ceilings,

sometimes adding color to match the furnishings or walls, sometimes with wall covering. The family room and loggia are like sisters with arms entwined. Draperies from Stout are repeated from the breakfast area in a soft cream with a leading edge of peacock velvet. Receding doors open onto the screened entertainment space, but can be closed for an expansive, yet livable family retreat. Outside, the navy blues of Castelle’s Sunbrella-covered sofas and the denim and navy easy-chairs provide a backdrop for spectacular vistas. An intimate hearthside social grouping and outdoor kitchen and dining area offer the perfect places for family and friends to relax. And the Thanksgiving party? “It was ready!” Errett-Pikosky says. “Fifty guests, a turkey, and an expansive home that delighted one and all.”

W

ith a view of the 17th hole on the golf course in Naples’ exclusive Quail West community, this 5,893-square-foot residence holds its own as an unpretentious yet luxurious refuge adorned with an

eclectic aesthetic. Builder Michael Diamond has worked with interior designer Lusia “Lou” Shafran and architect John Cooney on numerous projects. This time, they collaborated on his own home. “It was a labor of love,” Diamond says. “We were excited about it but wanted to make sure we were doing things that made sense.”

A COFFERED CEILING DEFINES THE STUDY, WHERE NATURAL LIGHT FLOWS IN THROUGH A WALL OF GLASS THAT OPENS TO THE POOL BEYOND. VISUAL COMFORT’S GLOBE CHANDELIER CASTS CIRCLES OF SOFT LIGHT AROUND THE INTIMATE SPACE.

From a practical perspective, Diamond wanted a broad appeal when it came to the design of the home. Still, the house remains a true representation of his family’s taste and lifestyle. “The home’s interior works in harmony with the outdoors, allowing the family to integrate their more casual lifestyle,” Shafran says. “My goal was to create an artistic aesthetic for the client that resulted in beauty and warmth that will last for years to come.” A transitional West Indies flavor with clean lines and a neutral color palette styles the exterior. “The elevation shows extensive use of corbels and brackets,” Diamond says. “Those are actually weather-resistant Azek, which we painted. It was very important to us to make sure the home was as maintenance-free as possible.” Aluminum shutters are accentuated with a dark bronze hue, which dignifies the exterior with a gravitas that is

in contrast to the home’s neutral tones. “The idea is that the home looks large and lovely but not overwhelmingly simplistic,” Shafran says. “I suggested the whites with the darks to create the serene manner of the facade.” Inside, the foyer’s grand stairway comprised of oak treads and stainless steel posts gives a stunning first impression as it wraps around to shape a cozy niche that offers a quiet spot to gather one’s thoughts. This is Shafran’s favorite space because of the way it elegantly introduces the home’s graceful luxury. “My wife didn’t want a black and white home … we wanted something soothing and relaxing,” says Diamond in reference to an intimate study that features simple design without a museum-like quality. The seating area is situated under a coffered ceiling treatment that serves to emphasize the height of the room and the balance of windows, while adding warmth and tempering a sterile look. According to Diamond, the family spends most of the time in the great room. An oak wall unit anchors the space, where a deep-seated sofa designed in a durable, pale gray Crypton placates the room. Shades of blue wash over the relaxed setting. “We wanted the main social areas to be livable, comfortable,” he says. “There are certainly more formal aspects of the home, but it also has a casual feel.” right:

Both elegant and functional, the dining room and adjacent bar area comprise an entertaining hub that easily accommodates large gatherings. The juxtaposition of wood, steel and bold accents styles the bar, where additional seating allows guests to enjoy an after-dinner cocktail. “The combination of pale grays and very dark espresso hues emphasizes certain parts of the room as opposed to having everything one color,” Shafran says. “It creates interest and warmth without looking too muted.” The master bedroom epitomizes that livable yet luxurious equilibrium the homeowners desired. Light and airy is the order of the day as a pair of glass chandeliers suspend from a vaulted ceiling and a wall of windows welcomes the outside in. Symmetry is key in the master bath, rendered in an understated white palette. Outside, the rear exterior of the home exemplifies the varied elevation Diamond wanted to achieve. Adorned with various water features, a fire bowl and a pattern of faux turf that outlines the pool, the patio gives a nod to manicured English gardens. Inside and out, the design minimizes pretentiousness with a muted color palette punctuated by warm woods, strategic bold accents, and an eclectic assortment of furnishings and textures. “There really isn’t anything about this house that I would change,” Diamond says. The result: livable luxury one builder now calls home.

With an emphasis on architectural design, architect John Cooney and builder Matt Knauf created an exterior delineated with connecting brackets made of cypress wood that stretch from the roof to the face of the home to add dimension and interest. The custom mahogany front door is a glimpse of what’s to come.

mere inspiration soon became reality in Naples’ exclusive Pelican Bay. Nestled in the private gated community,

“Georgetown,” a 6,150-square-foot home, is decked out with style and sophistication, all conceived by the collaborative team of developer Leslie Sherman and interior designers Randi Scott and Liz Brown, architects Randall Stofft and John Cooney, and builder Matt Knauf. With more than a half-dozen projects created together, the team brings something new to Pelican Bay that has not been done before. “We continue to raise the bar,” Sherman says. “This residence is a soft contemporary take on the British West Indies-style home.” With no expense spared, the exterior of the home conveys a message of refined beauty that is graced with lush tropical foliage to provide shade and privacy. Natural tones and textures promote a striking presentation as a circular drive of cement pavers in vanilla, chocolate and caramel hues offers a warm welcome. In a sub-tropical climate, the concrete roof serves a purpose as well. “The entire house was designed with special components to withstand the heat and Naples’ subtropical climate,” Knauf says. To create contrast, the deep rich color of the roof is tempered with a soft pale shade for the stucco walls. Tone-on-tone neutral colors flow to the inside, where splashes of blue are sprinkled throughout the great room. Resting on oak wood flooring, a hand-knotted wool and silk area rug acts as a piece of art with shades of color in an abstract pattern. “We fell in

love with the color and it became the inspiration for the room,” Scott says. The sofa is inviting with a soft neutral fabric and streamlined arms. “I love this piece, it’s one of the first things you see when you enter the home,” Scott says. The dining room is suffused with natural light and steeped in textural interplay. “We wanted the space to be about the view,” Brown says. The warmth of soft hues and wood tones comes across in the solid wood dining table and the modern classic style of the dining chairs. Here, a thin wood trim around the host chairs completes the contemporary play on a traditional style wing chair. An adjacent family room exudes a casual and simple yet sophisticated ambiance. Varying tones of blues from the area rug create connectivity with the blue and gray striped club chairs. Above it all, hues of blue stand out dramatically with the soft waves of a calming beach scene. “We tried to keep the palette neutral with wood elements to achieve a soft contemporary, transitional style,” Sherman says. Serenity prevails in the master bedroom with cool blues and grays in the wool and silk area rug that boasts a casual unstructured pattern. Focusing on an open concept, a cerused oak canopy bed is structured with cream-colored leather

Neutral tones and organic elements set the stage for spa-like relaxation in the master bath, where custom black walnut cabinetry lines the walls while shell-stone tile canvases the floor and climbs the columns. At the heart of the home, the kitchen is a place where family and friends gather, and artisan meals are crafted. Guests pull up to an oversized island topped with a two-inch-thick solid slab of brilliant white Cristallo quartzite. Stained maple wood cabinetry with channel molding pairs with the striations of gray veins in a marbleized quartzite backsplash. “We wanted to keep it clean, simple and classic,” Scott says. ne could argue that for interior designer Renee Gaddis the third time is a charm. After all, this is the most recent in a trio of model homes that she

has completed in the luxurious Naples Square residential towers located in the heart of downtown Naples. “From the first unit to this one, it’s been fun to see what homeowners are looking for with respect to design,” she says. “It’s like we have a track record now.” Located in south Naples, not far from 5th Avenue’s trendy boutiques and restaurants, this clean and crisp, quiet and calm condominium with open living spaces speaks for itself. “Most of our clients are not here year-round,” Gaddis says. “They want a downtown feel — not overly coastal themed — a simple, yet sophisticated home they can unlock and is ready-to-go.”

White painted walls, natural furnishings and cerused oak flooring style the interiors of this 3,000-square-foot residence that integrates the dining, living and kitchen areas into one open great room. “White is the new trend,” Gaddis says. “Clean and crisp, with white walls matched to minimal trim ... it instantly makes a home feel airy and light.” Earthy tones create focal points and add touches of warmth throughout. “I wanted to give the eye a welcoming place to rest,” the designer says. Gaddis chose wall coverings and a lot of natural materials, and layered them in neutral sand, stone, and driftwood hues. The neutrals read cooler in the main living areas and warmer in the private spaces. Still, texture reigns in the details. In the living area, the console is faced in leather, and the linen sectional is accented with a casual mix of smooth-pile velvet and soft, nubby chenille pillows. “The rounded armchairs are also upholstered in a textured weave,” Gaddis says. “I like to call them ‘cuddle’ chairs as they wrap around you.” For the kitchen, she utilized existing finishes, but opted to do a custom drywall hood. The choice

“Warmer toned materials like the hemp throw and shams style the master bedroom,” Gaddis says. “I also brought in gilt finishes in the hardware and chandelier.” The designer modified the master bath by adding metallic wall covering and a large, framed mirror strategically perched behind the vessel tub. “I really enjoy seeing the evolution of our spec condos in the Naples Square tower,” Gaddis says. “It was smooth sailing with this one. I can’t wait for the next one.”

“WHITE IS THE NEW TREND,” INTERIOR DESIGNER RENEE GADDIS SAYS. “CLEAN AND CRISP, WITH WHITE WALLS MATCHED TO MINIMAL TRIM ... IT INSTANTLY MAKES A HOME FEEL AIRY AND LIGHT.”

TIMELESSLY TRADITIONAL TWENTY YEARS AFTER MOVE-IN DAY, THIS CHARMING WINTER RETREAT IN THE EXCLUSIVE LITTLE HARBOUR COMMUNITY WAS READY FOR AN EXTREME MAKEOVER INTERIOR DESIGN BY LISA FICARRA AND KEALY STAPLETON, FICARRA DESIGN ASSOCIATES, NAPLES, FL TEXT BY MARIMAR MCNAUGHTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY VENJHAMIN REYES, MIAMI, FL

A

palette of white-on-cream with hints of sky blue and celadon green lifted the veil, bringing light

and sunshine into what had been the heavy Tuscan interiors of a New Jersey couple’s winter retreat in Little Harbour on Naples Bay. In this quiet enclave where extreme makeovers are trending, the homeowners commissioned interior designers Lisa Ficarra and Kealy Stapleton to refresh the main living areas of their 4,900-square-foot home. “I talked with the homeowners to get a feel for their personalities and an idea of the timeline,” Ficarra says. Then, the designers developed the initial concept for a living room and kitchen makeover. With the clients’ love of and Stapleton’s personal affinity for traditional decor, an interior scheme took shape. “Kealy really had a vision for how grand the space could be,” Ficarra says. “From there, the project just grew and grew and grew.” Built in the early aughts, the home’s great bone structure is evident in the towering interior columns, soaring coffered ceilings, and full-length sliding doors with transom windows that capture lake views. What began as a decorating project quickly became a full renovation after Ficarra and Stapleton presented their clients with design concepts illustrating furniture choices, textiles and finishes. “It was a great canvas and palette to work with,” Stapleton says.

A classic subway tile backsplash from Ceramic Matrix is upstaged with a mother-of-pearl basket weave inset from Ruben Sorhegui.

From the foyer, columns announce the formal living room. It was important to find a beautiful console to back the sofa — paired with mood lighting from shimmering wall sconces and a stunning chandelier — to create the grand entrance the couple desired. Beyond, a plush sofa and armchairs form an inviting hearthside setting. Shell stone completely refurbishes the fireplace finished with a brass screen. Floor-to-ceiling draperies pull open to reveal the loggia. “We wanted the loggia to feel like an extension of the indoors,” Stapleton says. “We brought the outside in.” The color scheme carries through to the dining room. “We love that playful stripe pattern and the blue and green hues throughout the house,” Stapleton says. Beneath a brass candelabra chandelier, a walnut wood pedestal-based dining table expands to entertain extended family. Painted and refreshed, the graceful balustrades of the nearby stairway ascend to the second-level guest suite. Fresh white and creamy toned surfaces, and handmade ceramic tiles complement the cabinetry and island in the kitchen. Woven shades and natural wood flooring make a seamless transition to an outdoor entertainment area. On the loggia, traditional carriage-style lanterns join the fireplace as inspiration for the selection of wicker and rattan furnishings. Lime green and creamy tones complement the interior scheme, while the neutral tones blend with the surrounding landscape that frames an infinity edge pool. The soothing sound of falling water spills away toward the lake. The end result is an elegant and refreshing change that brings the interior forward without deviating from the home’s original style.

“THROUGHOUT THIS HOME, THE PURE LINES OF THE FURNISHINGS BALANCE THE MORE DRAMATIC AND SCULPTURAL LIGHTING THAT ACTS AS JEWELRY FOR THE ROOMS,” INTERIOR DESIGNER KIM GRIMES SAYS.

From the white stucco exterior to the corbels and dark-gray slate pitched roof overhead, the home makes a clean and sophisticated impression. Inspired by the exclusive, resort-style neighborhood, interior designer Kim Grimes preferred a neutral palette that allows the eye to focus on the captivating colors of the natural scenery surrounding the home. Soft accent colors reference nature with shades of sky blue, stone taupe and buttery yellow. “The overall aesthetic is livable luxury,” the designer says. A variety of styles and fabrics meld together to create a signature look of sophistication. Natural accents in every space — rich woods, lustrous quartz, textured stone — work to blur the lines between inside and out, creating an organic flow throughout the entire house.

Outside, the expansive open-air loggia includes an outdoor kitchen with a gas grill, a fireplace, and plenty of space for lounging. “This is the ultimate place for relaxation — the slipcovered sofas are so inviting and soft,” Grimes says. “I designed the fireplace surround using glass mosaic tiles that echo the soft neutral hues found throughout the interior spaces.” “The stunning use of warm and light tones inside and out keeps this home contemporary yet very warm and inviting,” Léger-Wetzel says. “Stock Development has worked with Beasley & Henley Interior Design for many years, and we knew Troy and Kim’s design experience and attention to detail would bring the spirit of this house to life.”

This loggia entertains with a spacious living area, outdoor kitchen, and a clean-lined linear fireplace from Empire. The fireplace surround is embellished with Daltile glass mosaic tile that echoes the subdued interior palette. Slipcovered sofas from Lee Industries shape an inviting hearthside social group.

L

ong-time Pennsylvania snowbirds and sports enthusiasts Paula and Peter Pala had already fallen in love with Miromar Lakes when they decided to build a place of their own. “It’s like living at the

Ritz-Carlton,” Paula says. They wanted a light, bright Florida resort-style home where they could invite all of their friends over to watch a variety of games on multiple TVs with all the accoutrements: large open spaces, an indoor-outdoor flow, bars, wine storage and even a pizza oven fit the bill. So, they bought beautiful property on the water, pored over shelter magazines to come up with their desired style, and assembled their team: architects Randall Stofft and John Cooney, builder Matt Shull, interior designer Arlynn McDaniel and landscape architect Scott Windham.

“We decided upon a West Indies style,” Cooney says. Corbels and rafters under tongue-and-groove soffits, louvered grills between entry arches, and exterior plantation shutters architecturally define the exterior of this 11,755-square-foot home that supports the couple’s entertaining lifestyle. Inside, a great room incorporates the dining room, kitchen and an amazing clubroom that opens to a huge lanai and spa-like pool area. Just through solid mahogany entry doors, the foyer is crowned by a Venetian-plaster barrel ceiling that transitions to a wood-beamed ceiling over the great room. two distinct conversation groupings in the living area. “The taupe hue ‘Drift of Mist’ will go green or beige,” McDaniel says. “I call it my chameleon color. It works with everything.” Warm walnut flooring flows through to the kitchen and adjacent dining area. “We are big entertainers, love cooking, food and wine, and we often invite people over,” Paula says. “We had 50 people here for Super Bowl; we built the house to fit our lifestyle.” The party continues in the clubroom, just around the corner past the wine rack. Four entertaining areas are cleverly delineated via a series of inverted soffits and coffers that are offset with

silk-shaded metal drum lights. “The clubroom is one of the most fun rooms that we’ve designed,” Cooney says. “It’s very large with a billiards table, home theater, card table and a sit-down bar — it feels like a small restaurant.” This fun space opens to the lanai, an outdoor living area with a summer kitchen. The couple uses their summer kitchen often. “It’s really a full second kitchen, with the typical grill and sink, of course, as well as a cooktop, dishwasher, and an Evo-type hibachi grill,” Peter says. “Also, we imported a great wood-burning pizza oven from Italy, in which we’ve cooked everything from pizza to the Thanksgiving turkey.”

In the master suite, a private oasis in this house built for entertaining, soft blue accents take their cue from peaceful water views. “The window treatment is a custom cornice in blue linen and white trim. We kept it simple because the view out to the pool and lake is amazing,” the designer says. The master bath has a private outdoor shower with a waterfall wall that offers nothing short of a full spa experience. “Paula and Peter tell me all the time how much they truly enjoy their home, and that they receive so many compliments,” McDaniel says. “With an emphasis on entertaining ... this house definitely speaks for itself.”

The dining area is all about sculptural elements. The Julian Chichester table itself is shapely and modern, while three tiers of crystal drops on Ochre’s “Artic Pear” chandelier catch the light beautifully. Cast bronze, coral-like candlesticks from Judith Liegeois act as art to complete the scene.

C

atering to clients with a strong point of view can be challenging for even the most seasoned professional. For interior designers Jesse Carrier and Mara Miller, it’s the very way they built their business, and this

New York-based husband and wife team relishes these unique opportunities. “I think eclectic best describes our design style,” Miller says. “We like to mix things up for interest, yet we keep it all tailored and edited.” This proved to be the perfect mix for one couple looking for an interior designer to transform their 6,915-square-foot Naples getaway from dull and dated to “beachy-chic.” Up for the charge, Carrier and Miller stripped back some of the passé design elements and opened the space up to breathtaking Gulf views.

The solid teakwood cocktail table by Jett Thompson Antiques is a sculptural showstopper in the living area, where rattan armchairs and a coral-colored throw from Barneys atop an Edward Wormley divan give the space its relaxed vibe. Chrome reading lamps from Circa Lighting add a modern edge.

Bringing the outside in, sandy hues wrap the walls while bright citrus tones add just the right amount of pop. Original travertine flooring flows throughout to unify the social areas. With a fun mix of classic beach house meets modern chic, this carefully choreographed interior scheme keeps the eyes moving from room to room. In the dining area, a contemporary, Eero Saarinen-inspired oval table with a nickel-plated base centers the open expanse, where the intimacy of coral-colored wing back chairs offers a traditional influence. A vivid purple hue complements the brush of coral in a large abstract painting that exudes strokes of drama and excitement.

Beach inspired, the living area is all about texture play and eclectic style. The organic shape of a teak root cocktail table makes a stong statement as it boldly defies the rectilinear forms of the tailored sofas — clean-lined, mid-century pieces. Classic rattan armchairs join the social grouping as zesty citrus hues appear to celebrate the fun of classic Florida design. To carry the feel of the beach through to the private spaces, grass cloth lines the walls in the guest room with an island-style texture. Wicker chairs continue the theme, while more orange and bright-green accents add a tropical punch. Lacquered-wood tray tables and a chrome floor lamp provide just the right amount of modern touches for balance. Expanding the social spaces, the patio invites dining alfresco. Opening all the shutters delivers a tropical breeze and seamless panoramic ocean vistas. In an unexpected twist, the woven rattan chairs center a Belgian concrete table that adds a modern element. Bamboo lines the back wall in a final nod to the beach. “You need to have that ocean-blue room,” says Carrier in reference to the master bedroom. “The cool tones are a nice contrast to the shades of sunburst throughout the rest of the home.” Mix-and-match patterns and styles come together flawlessly in the serene, spa-like suite. Here, a sitting area by the windows makes the perfect sanctuary. “There’s a peacefulness and a timeless quality to this home; but what keeps it stylish and interesting is our push for simplicity,” Miller says. “We were able to combine traditional beach design with cool modern elements to give this family a perfect holiday getaway tailored just for them.”

looking FORWARD

Interior designers Michael Adrian Hernandez and Joel Leizan joined forces to create a serene and sophisticated penthouse perched at the top of Miami’s Brickell City Centre. Envisioned as a respite from the surrounding urban scene, the 2,684-square-foot contemporary residence is styled with warm woods, reflective surfaces, neutral tones and pops of color. Boasting a bird’s-eye view of beautiful sunsets as golden light fills the open spaces, this penthouse combines luxurious comfort with the necessities of modern living. See the full story in

Florida Design Miami Edition, coming in December 2019, or visit floridadesign.com.
