EDITOR’S MESSAGE

above:

Built in Feadship’s Aalsmeer shipyard, the sleek, 273-foot M/Y Savannah is fashioned in couture interiors and a striking exterior with a profile painted entirely in metallic hues — inspired inside and out by Cristina Gherardi Design of Paris.

THE SEASON OF

Art & Culture

Florida Design Miami Edition hits the newsstands in sync with the buzzing cultural season as global art collectors and connoisseurs descend upon our sunny shores by land, air and sea. This issue will complement the colorful palette of events that make Miami the place to be in the midst of the growing international attention bestowed on the thriving art and urban scene in South Florida. With the world-renowned Art Basel Miami Beach and Design Miami/, in addition to Miami’s Wynwood Arts, Midtown Arts and Design Districts, and museums with world-class collections, we have the best of fine art, furnishings and entertainment right here. Take a look inside these pages as we open the doors to some of South Florida’s most spectacular homes from our cover story, a 2,800-square-foot vacation condo that’s “All About Relating” stylish design with fun punches of color; to a 7,300-square-foot “Modern Wonderland” filled with fantastical furnishings; and an “Artfully Arranged” 8,500-square-foot home that reads transparent with walls of glass highlighting edgy and eclectic art and sculpture. Then step aboard Feadship’s award-winning Savannah, the world’s first hybrid superyacht sporting uber-chic interiors that do not disappoint. Delightfully styled with relaxation in mind, a unique “Nemo Lounge” allows a glimpse at the mesmerizing world under the sea. Our premier issue of Florida Design Miami Edition under Palm Beach Media Group endeavors to build upon past success as we extend the magazine’s reach in the future. In keeping, we offer a hearty welcome back to all of the art lovers from up North, the Midwest and across the oceans. We hope you find inspiration for your next design project while taking in the city’s international art and cultural scene.

In a world where colors can’t clash and patterns pop, luxurious and livable interiors are attentively designed, but don’t take themselves too seriously. Jonathan Adler designs all elements one needs to create a flawlessly chic home: the deep-blue velvet “Bacharach” sofa, an “Ultra” lounge chair that excites in a nod to Italian Modernism, a hint of Space Age Futurism, and a jolt of electric pattern; the simple drum form of the “Alphaville” cocktail table atop the Op Art striped area rug, bold in black and white. Saucy, seductive, sexy … the “Hush, Bitten and Lipstick” beaded wall art seals the modern space with a kiss.

Bold, beautiful and slender,

Feadship’s Savannah

is quite the head-turner as the world’s first hybrid superyacht. Sporting a one-million-watt battery pack as part of her propulsion platform, she confidently boasts a contemporary, metallic sea foam-finished exterior with teak decks while comfortably cruising the open seas. Styled by Paris-based CG Design to maximize the outdoor lifestyle, the award-winning, 273-foot Savannah thrills with a wealth of open-air entertainment venues as well as cozy, private spaces capable of welcoming up to 12 guests with a dedicated crew of 24. An innovative glass door system slides open to uber-chic interiors that do not disappoint. Spacious with gently curved walls, the living areas — both private and social — blend rich rosewood with lavish metallic elements.

his career as an artist when an exploratory foray into welding quickly became an obsession. Square by stainless steel square, his graceful shapes take form with each metal fragment playing a significant role. A twist or turn of any one part can breathe life into the sculpture. The shadows cast imbue each piece with a secondary layer of beauty, abstraction and mystery.

The hollow squares of Diamond Love based in natural stone creates a freeze frame of timeless gestures and emotions. Shown below, Lagemann’s Peter Pan sculpture of a male cliff diver depicts the human body in motion.

Austin Kerr

Kerr’s Venetian plaster paintings capture nature’s pursuit of aging, while the artist’s abstract, metallic bronze, tropical Monstera Leaf mural wraps the ceiling and walls in a vestibule at Holly Hunt’s Miami showroom.

Abstract art by Austin Kerr takes a childhood fascination and shapes a contemporary vision. Involved in his family’s furniture business at a young age, he explored high-end finishes with a creative eye and studied European techniques, eventually transforming them into art. Today, Kerr’s signature Venetian plaster paintings experiment with color interaction, layering, glazes and gradients to bring his vision of how architecture, cities and human landscapes are aged by nature. Unforced, organic and soothing, his art is to be touched. continued on 52 50 FLORIDA DESIGN’S MIAMI EDITION 15-3

What is your design philosophy?

Our style is laid-back and relaxed, just like our

island. Even when we’re creating something modern and dramatic, it has to be a welcoming environment that is centered around comfort first. Key West is a friendly, social town that loves to entertain, so our work has to lay the foundation for that lifestyle. fd miami:

Do you have a favorite decorating source?

I obsess over textiles, fabrics and rugs. Our

When an outdated Key West home

in dire need of renovation caught the eye and

imagination of one couple, they turned to interior designer David L. Smith for consultation. “I think I shocked them when I suggested tearing it down and starting anew,” Smith says. “But they mulled it over, assembled an amazing team and jumped in with both feet.” The result is this truly iconic Key West tropical modern home that dazzles. From the moment the gate opens, it becomes apparent that indoor/outdoor living is a priority for this residence with its harmonious architecture, design and landscape that beckon guests to traverse the pool’s stepping stones to the front entry. Key West-based architect Haven Burkee, partner at Bender & Associates, designed clean open lines within the home that are reflected by dynamic geometry throughout the open-air spaces. With a vast background in designing and rejuvenating homes in this highly sought-after area for more than 20 years, Smith opted for a simplified, modern design within a tropical setting. “Inside, our work was inspired by the couple’s impressive collection of fine art,” he says.

modern “In general, I pair my client’s personal style of living with the unique character of the Florida Keys.” However, these new owners — he a modernist, and she a traditionalist — were stuck in opposing corners which created a unique challenge for the designer. With a mantra that asserts design is 20 percent decorating and 80 percent counceling, Smith’s negotiating skills prevailed, allowing both sides to claim victory. Outside, indigenous plants that act as sculpture and an abundance of Florida sunshine provide the perfect setting for lush gardens by Craig Reynolds Landscape Architecture. Tropical breezes flow while casual furnishings shape a social grouping on the floating lounge area ... an ideal spot to kick back and enjoy Key West’s glorious sunsets at day’s end.

fd miami:

When did you become interested in

architecture and design? strang:

I was raised in an amazing home with an

exposed concrete structure and tons of glass designed by Florida architect Gene Leedy. I was immersed in architecture and design from a very young age. fd miami:

strang:

From where do you draw your inspiration?

My firm’s work is inspired by the site and

climate-driven designs of the Sarasota School of Architecture, a modernist movement that unfolded on Florida’s west coast during the 1950s. Architects such as Paul Rudolph, Ralph Twitchell, Victor Lundy, Gene Leedy and others tailored modernist ideals to meet the needs of a specific region and climate. fd miami:

What do you consider your firm’s unique

signature trademark? strang:

Strang Design’s homes have received more

awards for design excellence than any other South Florida firm. Our team strives to design timeless homes with the strong and sophisticated character that exemplifies regional modernist design. text KIM MOSLEY photography CLAUDIO MANZONI, MIAMI, FL

fd miami:

What was unique or challenging about this

building site? strang:

This house is nestled between a small forest

known as a tropical hardwood hammock and the Atlantic Ocean. The portion of the home facing the forest has a different vibe than the oceanfront portion. These completely different realms above:

In keeping with the tenets of the Sarasota School architects, this house blends Florida vernacular elements such as metal roofs, shady porches and wood detailing with modern elements such as massive walls of Florida keystone.

generated unique design responses. The house is raised significantly above the ground to allow hurricane storm surges to flow beneath the home. fd miami:

Have eco-friendly materials or technologies

been utilized? strang:

The home relies upon local materials and

passive design strategies. The entire island is basically a fossilized coral reef. We took this native material, referred to as Florida keystone, and allowed it to become a driving force in the design. The passive design strategies include sun-shading devices, deep overhangs and cross-ventilation.

Celebrating THE FLORIDA KEYS

Architect Max Strang takes traditional cultural and ecological concepts of the Florida Keys and transforms them into an evolutionary beach house design

Great architecture is always

optimistic and this home, built in 2016, captures that hopeful and

confident spirit. “Personally, I think it’s a combination of the framed views of nature, abundant light, authentic materials, and ocean breezes that makes being inside this home so delightful,” says architect Max Strang, the founding principal of Strang Design. With a style and vision that trends toward regional modernist, the design team blends the cultural, ecological and physical environment of the Florida Keys with a beach house vibe that blurs the boundaries between inside and out. “We flooded the interior with natural light from many different directions. It is so important to be surrounded by light,” Strang says. “Light, space, views, materials,

balance ... that is what makes our interior spaces so livable.” The great room actually has light coming in from all four directions, but it still feels shaded and comfortable. And by allowing materials to run continuously from inside to outside, this feeling of interior living brought outdoors captures a barefoot elegance. The home has a series of small, intimate balconies, and also a large, shaded terrace with spectacular views that extend over the mangroves and across the Atlantic Ocean. This particular space is designed to capture and cool the prevailing southeasterly wind. The home’s striking appearance is a byproduct of its breezeways, balconies and terraces ... and also the efforts to raise the home above the ground (and ocean). It looks and feels like a Florida house. “My favorite space is the beautiful entry breezeway that divides the home into two separate wings,” Strang says. “Architecturally, it’s a dynamic experience.” strang.design

Taking full advantage of the island nation’s blue-ombre waters, biodiverse sandy shallows, and palm-laced parcels without overpowering them with man-made excess requires a fine balancing act, one which Anantara Kihavah-Maldives Villas has superbly achieved.

A COUPLE’S MIAMI BEACH RETREAT TRANSFORMS INTO A WORK OF ART THAT CELEBRATES AN IDYLLIC TROPICAL LIFESTYLE

FOR ONE COUPLE’S NEW WINTER HOME, the location for this centrally situated Miami Beach getaway could not have been more perfect. “It is close to shopping, entertainment and the beach,” designer Rob Brown says. “The problem was the house did not fit my clients’ needs in any way. We had to knock it down.” Having consulted with the clients on multiple homes throughout the years, the design team was up for the challenge. This latest collaboration had to be comfortable, full of character and large enough to fit their family. “They wanted this retreat to be idyllic for everyone. Their children and grandchildren visit frequently and enjoy walking to all sorts of events,” Brown says. Looking very much as if it was carefully placed amid its lush tropical setting, the 5,600-square-foot house now lives as one with its environs. “Our firm offers architectural, interior and landscape design, so we encouraged something architecturally and artistically adventurous,” designer Todd Davis says. “Everything about this home works in harmony.” Today, the newly built contemporary residence radiates spirited Miami Beach vibes that embrace the area’s artsy feel inside and out. Pulling up to the home, the eyes are instantly engaged with an aesthetic fusion of materials: white stucco, teak wood, glass and stainless steel. Pale to medium grays are the foundation for

One of the most unique features in the home is the modern-styled custom plaster ceiling. “We were classically trained, and in a classic home everything, including the ceiling, is adorned. Everywhere you look, this home is a piece of art,” designer Todd Davis says.

the designers’ color scheme and contrast well against the many white walls inside and out. To create balance, varying tones of gingers and browns were added to the modern scheme. “With that as a base, we used pops of strong green to reflect the gardens and create an indoor/outdoor aura,” Brown says. The design unfolds with artist Zachary Oxman’s bronze gate that opens to an intimate courtyard leading to the home’s entry. Step beyond the front door clad in Peruvian hardwood planks and be “wowed” as the line of vision spirals up and around the foyer. Rather than paint the sinuous stairway crafted of raw steel, the designers decided to polish it to create a mirror finish — even though it took more time to complete. Walnut treads warm the modern, sculptural composition as it ascends to the private second-level spaces. Unexpected details fill the home as limestone flooring flows from the husband’s study on one side of the sculptural stairway to the great room on the other. Here, a three-dimensional block puzzle playfully crosses the ceiling in the living area, dining area and kitchen. Accommodations were made to conceal the ambient lighting that was crucial in the home’s design.

Recessed lighting accents Opustone’s St. Tropez limestone that steps up to the nautilus shell-inspired, stainless steel swirl and continues to flow into the living area. Here, book-matched quartzite dazzles a hearthside setting with 1940s Gio Ponti wingbacks from Gustavo Oliveri, a two-sided sofa clad in a Holly Hunt Great Plains linen blend and a vintage Armand Jonkers cocktail table.

In the dining area, Studio Van den Akker mahogany chairs comfortably seat guests at the “Divine” walnut table. Nearby, the “Michele” cabinet appears to float, vintage Mazzega Murano chandeliers shimmer above, and an area rug custom angled by Rob Brown echoes the home’s contemporary design.

A feature fireplace wall of white quartzite with green and black veining makes an artistic statement in the living area. “We wanted stone that would create interest and pattern,” Brown says. The designers added warmth with a ginger hue that wraps the 1940s wingback chairs and the soft grays of the area rug. Walls of glass welcome garden views into the elegantly casual great room. Rather than one grand chandelier for the dining area, the design team chose four smaller vintage Mazzega Murano fixtures to illuminate the custom walnut dining table by Brown Davis. Flaunting a modern classic design on a walnut frame, the dining chairs easily seat a party of eight. Artist Donald Baechler’s botanical prints dot the wall in complement to the tropical motif.

Opustone’s “Celeste Mist” quartzite countertop and backsplash carve a picture window in the kitchen’s rosewood veneer cabinetry. Artistic Frame’s counter stools wrapped in a bold pistachio-hued leather from Jerry Pair provide a lively pop of color.

Rosewood veneer cabinetry warms the kitchen, where a trio of pistachio-hued counter stools are fun sidekicks for the massive Caesarstone island countertop. “Natural woods and warm hues add to the comfort level in this contemporary home,” Brown says. When floor-to-ceiling glass doors slide open, the kitchen seamlessly blends with the outdoor living area. Finishing touches carry through to the outside, where a partial quartzite wall and an inlaid tile rug define the open-air dining area. This jewel comes alive in the “Magic City” as artistic vibes embrace the spirit of its eclectic surroundings. “The home is unique, and the clients love it,” Davis says. “It’s wonderful to have all of the architecture, design and landscaping come together, and see our ideas come to fruition.”

BEAUTY BOASTING MAGNIFICENT WATER VIEWS, THIS CONTEMPORARY HOME SET AMID SOUTH FLORIDA’S SCENIC LAUDERDALE HARBORS PROVIDES THE PERFECT MIX OF COZY COMFORT AND SPECTACULAR STYLE

IDEALLY SITUATED WITHIN SOUTH Florida’s scenic community of Lauderdale Harbors, this extraordinary home offers effortless access to just about any water activity one could desire from yachting to sail surfing. The homeowner considered this vibrant waterfront setting the picture-perfect location for his primary residence. But with an active, on-the-go lifestyle and no time to execute a decorating plan, his search was on for a savvy interior designer who could anticipate his individual tastes and style. “I was grateful to be referred to this homeowner by his realtor,” interior designer Maritza Capiro says. “I worked very closely with him to create spaces that suit his lifestyle. He travels extensively both for work and for pleasure, so I was tasked with making all the design selections from tile to towels,” she says.

The breakfast area provides exquisite views of passing boats. Cattelan Italia’s glass-topped table with a sculptural walnut base adds a whimsical modern edge to the casual space.

Capiro knew her selections for this home had to be both beautiful and practical. When the owner is in town, this is the place that family and friends gather to have fun, relax and unwind. The designer created focal points throughout the house that emphasize the homeowner’s love for entertaining and the water views outside. “Nothing in the home was selected for its trendiness,” Capiro says. “Individual pieces chosen for their unique beauty all came together to form a pleasing composition.” The living room sets the tone for the home’s elegant interior scheme. This room instantly welcomes as its subtle neutral hues embellished with colorful accents create a warm and enchanting vibe. Continuing with a contemporary look and feel, the adjacent dining room features a custom light fixture that Capiro found from a New York Times advertisement for an upscale development in Manhattan.

In the family room, a visually impactful tile wall that houses the fireplace, television and sound system immediately captures attention. The tiles were individually selected and placed in a cascading pattern to evoke the shimmering waterfront just steps away. To create an air of tranquility in the master bedroom, the designer strategically chose custom furnishings that shape a serene setting and provide a relaxing cocoon. “My vision for this room came from the qualities I observed in my client — strength and warmth,” Capiro says. “When I work with my clients, I like to create spaces that reflect their personality, so each new project is different while still maintaining my vision as a designer.”

Centering the owners’ deep-seated Roche Bobois sofas, Cattelan Italia’s “Kadir” glass cocktail table from Arravanti does not take up too much visual weight in the living room. This leaves plenty of space to play with design — like adding a black Louis XV-style bergère to the eclectic mix.

BOLD COLORS, STIMULATING TEXTURE PLAY AND A TOUCH OF WHIMSY LIVEN THINGS UP FOR ONE YOUNG FAMILY READY FOR FUN

The dining room is a visual treat filled with provocative shadowing and Roche Bobois’ modern furnishings. A beautiful crystal chandelier separates white light into a spectrum of color above, while the table’s base contains a hologram that changes colors below.

WHEN PRINCIPAL INTERIOR designer Ivonne Ronderos and lead designer Anahi Carrillo first walked into this expansive, 7,300-square-foot home in the exclusive gated enclave of Bal Harbour Village at the northern tip of Miami Beach, the immediate thought was “very vanilla.” That was the exact opposite of the eclectic, kid-friendly modern dream house — enlivened with brilliant hues and lively patterns — homeowners Sary and Iser Rabinovitz envisioned for their family with four young children. “We have to give credit to our clients because they pushed for the boldness, and at the same time we had to work to keep the timeless approach we’re known for,” Ronderos says. To create an effortless and warm color palette in a domicile where every room has vibrant splashes of different colors, the design team organized hues according to the sentiment they provoke. In the living area,

above: Upon entry, a large feather pen next to a book and a bowl of candy that reads “I eat my gummy bears two at a time — so they don’t die alone” immediately sets the tone for this fun-loving home.

wall molding wraps out-of-place columns that appear to support the custom, elevated bookshelf accented with a pop of yellow — a hue that elicits happiness, imagination and optimism. The design team discovered a vendor who curates books and refines them with the same color, these in white. Fiery red and soft pink touches catch the eye in the entry, where an oversized mirror is strategically perched on one side to reflect the sitting area on the other. Pairing posh with the eclectic, the white stools beneath the mirrored console are made of paper mache but are amazingly strong enough to hold an adult. Bold black and white stripes cross the foyer ceiling to the niche where an area rug grounds the sitting space in perfect complement. A whimsical approach styles the dining room, where sequins on the backs of reupholstered black chairs create a huge wow factor. Velvet seats exude luxury but

Organization is key in the kitchen, as the wife loves to cook. Geometry takes precedence with an interfacing of glass, stainless steel and brilliant white rectangular surfaces that continue the fluidity found throughout the project. Mixing patterns and shapes in the family room makes for fun and relaxation. Dimensionally designed, a custom entertainment unit lines the wall with plenty of floating cabinetry for games, toys and much-needed storage. “It is the perfect size for the room’s space,” Carrillo says. Though the master bedroom purposely deviates with a serene dark-gray palette, a white faux-fur bench and the stunning beaded crystal chandelier make quite the statement. Blackout draperies in Romo’s floral print pull open to reveal the tropical views. In the master bath, the designers added greenery and stylized art to the private space’s streamlined feel. The homeowners wanted special areas for the kids and the design team delivered with rooms ready for years of adventures. Creating something fun and youthful, yet modern and functional, this central hub of the home encompasses the children’s spaces and an office for the wife’s creative endeavors. Using atypical materials, a lively color palette and texture play, the designers were able to give the homeowners exactly what they asked for and more. “I love it. My favorite rooms are the kitchen and family room, where we are all together in the same space,” Sary says. From wall to wall, this home is filled with innovation and exciting details that are just right for this family.

Airy and light, the living area exudes comfort with low-profile furnishings and beautiful water views. “This is important,” the designer says. “I didn’t want something with a lot of volume here. The sofa is high quality, but it is also comfortable.” And the chairs had

to be relaxing for men, too.” A splash of color is added with a vibrant artistic find at the Pulse Art Fair in Miami. “It started out like a blank canvas, and when everything was put together it became magical,” she says. Nearby, the open kitchen and dining area offer lovely views of Downtown Miami and stunning sunsets, communicating well, so to speak. “My client loves it,” Mascarenhas says. “When cooking for her family and friends, everyone can be together.” Designed to be versatile, the office easily converts to accommodate extended family enjoying vacation time together. This is also true of the guest room with two single beds. “We did the custom headboard in oak and attached it to the wall, and the twin beds can be pushed together to make a king,” the designer says. “My client told me she never wants to leave her apartment … that’s the best thing to hear,” Mascarenhas says. “I know that I have created a home in the true sense of the word.” below: The owner’s collection of rock-band posters above the custom headboard adds a much needed pop of color in the guest room. STEPS PAST A FUTURISTIC SCENE BY THE LONDON POLICE, A SINUOUS STAIRWAY WINDS ITS WAY AROUND THE SCULPTURAL “SCEPTER OF THE CRYSTAL FLAME” BY LEE SHAMEL AND UP TO THE PRIVATE SECOND-LEVEL SPACES.

The white stucco-finish concrete and aluminum-framed glass home was originally built as a modern spec house in 2012. Bricked Vena Grigio marble steps over an 18-foot-long reflecting pool, leading the way to the glass entry door. The flowing marble climbs the wall to the left, while coral stone veneer travels up the wall to the right. “The coral adds a duality to the front facade. It also has holes and bumps that introduce a contrasting texture to the smooth marble,” Diverio says. “It’s an interesting stone that is characteristic in Florida homes.” These materials are continued in the back of the house on a sweeping, open veranda that sits on 80 feet of waterfront. A cool architectural overhang provides shade as needed, and on the upper floor, aluminum louvers finished in bronze do the same without blocking natural light. Though the outdoor furnishings are largely neutral, there are lots of pops of red in accessories. “The owners love reds and oranges,” Dunagan says. “We

“Our challenge was to find and create sculptural and intriguing furnishings that mimic the edgy feel of the art yet are neutral enough that the art remains the focal point,” interior designer Thomas Diverio says.

used these vibrant colors in accents both outside and inside.” The most striking feature in the home, however, is undoubtedly the significant collection of contemporary art. When the homeowners purchased the house, they hired Dunagan and Diverio to help them integrate their artwork into the interiors in a seamless fashion. “Their taste is very modern, eclectic and edgy, as is their art collection. The house was a spec home, so they brought us in to personalize it, to make the interior design reflect their taste,” Diverio says. A big part of the challenge was selecting and creating custom furnishings that were strong enough to complement the collection, while keeping the artwork in the forefront. “Our palette had to be neutral with black, white, dark and light gray hues,” Dunagan says. “The color stayed largely in the art.” Working closely with the owners, the team started to assemble one-of-a-kind unusual furnishings to

work with the art. Upon entry to the main social spaces, a special backlit niche was created to hold a stained-glass piece. Beneath it, the distinct fluid shape of a sloping leather chaise welcomes without detracting from the art. Nearby, the graceful lines of the “Isabel” sofa, with its metal shell entirely wrapped in leather, delineates the fascinating living area. “We used black furnishings and leather to provide continuity in the design,” Diverio says. Just steps into the dining area, a 14-foot-long table of glass holds its own. “We wanted this area to be very transparent,” Dunagan says. “Even the chandelier, which was customized to fit the table, is made of crystals.” Wrapped in leather with metal stud details, each of the Louis XV-inspired dining chairs is unique with a different carved detail on top. “The intriguing furnishings became the equivalent of art to us,” Diverio says.

In the family room and an adjacent breakfast nook, the palette stays the same as the design becomes more about comfort and relaxation. A large sectional and iron cocktail tables create a welcoming place for the family to spend time together and watch TV while grabbing an easy snack from the nearby kitchen. “This home is unusual in that most of the houses we work on have open plans with the kitchen as a focal point,” Diverio says. “Here it’s the opposite: the main living area is much larger.” Apropos for this unconventional couple. “They come here to enjoy their family and friends, and do a lot of casual entertaining,” Dunagan says. “They selected this home for its wonderful location on Allison Island, its wide-open spaces inside and out, and of course, the surrounding waterfront views.”

“The five senses are our compass to great design. We aim to achieve a harmonious balance with all the elements incorporated into our homes that blend timelessness and sophistication with a modern sensibility, functionality and comfort.”

SERENITY AND sophistication are a perfect match for this model penthouse inspired by an urban lifestyle of fashion and luxury. Interior designers Michael Adrian Hernandez and Joel Leizan created this space perched high above Miami’s Brickell City Centre to give the option of a quiet, contemporary home with natural light and relaxing vignettes. “We wanted to design a calming space to ensure the new owners enjoy their time away from the busy lifestyle outside,” Hernandez says of the “Magic City’s” extraordinarily unique urban playground below. Steps from the high energy of the 500,000-square-foot venue of open-air shopping, dining and entertainment at Brickell City Centre, the designers envisioned a chic 2,684-square-foot space at the Reach condo tower to be a showcase of luxury, beauty and ease of living. Wrapped in a dynamic, elegant exterior edge, this penthouse sports a straightforward interior scheme

In the living area, Pianca’s “Haik” stools lend a reflective accent to Roberta Schilling’s “Compass” cocktail tables and Saccaro’s “Paris” conical shade floor lamps with a tripod base in a hardwood finish. “The lamps are simple, elegant and fill the space with warmth,” interior designer Michael Hernandez says.

The “Essence Trio” pendant by Tech Lighting with three linear lengths in a gold-brushed finish creates a modern interpretation of a chandelier.

highlighted with the designers creative use of warm woods, reflective surfaces and neutral tones with the occasional pop of color. Combining luxury and comfort with the necessities of modern living, the designers chose shades of white, off white and soft, creamy beige to enhance the elegance of marble flooring, minimal and beautiful wallpaper accents, custom millwork and architectural lighting. “We like the sophistication and architecture of this Swire Properties building,” Hernandez says. “We used mostly soft colors for a clean, easy and unobstructed look.”

“I have been doing renderings of my ideas for designing rooms since I was 12 years old,” interior designer Michael Hernandez says. “It really helps to illustrate the ideas so others understand my concepts.”

In the open living area, Addison House, the design firm that curated the penthouse and worked with Hernandez and Leizan, commissioned local artist Lara Gallardo to create a bold contemporary painting to line the wall above the light-toned Italian sofa by Desiree. The linear abstract’s bold hues provide a punch of color in complement to Missoni’s black-velvet accent pillows and a pair of “Boheme” chairs backed in black. “I like black as an accent because it is sophisticated and visually pleasing,” Hernandez says. Continuing the open theme, polished white marble flows into the kitchen outfitted with state-of-the-art Bosch appliances and built-in, Uline 48-bottle temperature-controlled wine storage. A dominant island topped in Calacatta white marble is perfect for preparing food, dining or socializing. In the brightly illuminated dining area beyond, the designers opened the space by knocking out the wall and designing custom white oak display shelving with a bronze mirror and LED channels. “It is all so open that the light just flows through,” Leizan says.

The balcony overlooking the city of Miami is framed by a painted charcoal gray metal and glass rail which matches the interiors to give the total scheme a cohesive look. “The balcony has the wow factor,” Hernandez says. “You hear the vibrant city noises, but see a calming western sunset.”

In the study, the eyes are instantly drawn to a contemporary canvas that creates a geometric focal point to encourage creative thinking. Cattelan Italia’s “Vega” desk mimics the geometric theme, while the cotton-viscose “Radja” area rug in brown, beige and blue oyster tones echoes the interior and exterior blues.

Midnight blue satin paints the office which is unique with wood on the walls, repeated black accents and chic gold accessories. An oversized mirror is strategically placed to enhance the views. But Leizan and Hernandez had to convince the rest of the team that this design was the best idea for this space. “They did not want to do it, but my rendering was bold for this creative area and it worked,” Hernandez says. “I put myself in this room and decided that it needed to be young in spirit with a fun, computer space. I love it.” In the spacious and relaxing master suite, the designers created an aura of sophistication that includes masculine and feminine touches. Hernandez cut panels behind the bed and ran LED lighting inside with leather-like wallpaper. “We used darker toned wood to contrast with the white walls,” he says. “We also mounted a set of Sonneman ‘Grape’ pendants which glow beautifully over the bedside chests.” Across the room, he designed and configured the custom wall unit with open panels and an interior wood finish. The textured silk-viscose area rug offers a contrast to the white walls while uniting both sides of the room. Nearby, the luxurious master bath repeats the penthouse’s clean, serene theme with a soaking tub designed both for relaxation and to take advantage of the view which floods the space with natural light. The overall design philosophy was to ensure the penthouse did not feel like a model apartment, and at the same time, offer calming rooms to contrast with the hustle and bustle of Miami. “We met our goals and feel a tremendous sense of satisfaction,” the design team says. Fait accompli!

A PENTHOUSE IS JUST a penthouse until it becomes a showcase of visual excellence. Sought out for her vibrant style and eclectic talent, interior designer Perla Lichi was commissioned to finesse one couple’s 3,800-square-foot home at One Island Place in Aventura, Fla., arming it with the color of royalty. “They loved my unique design style and the way I put colors together. We hit it off right away,” the designer says. It all started with a hint of purple in a Versace butterfly accent pillow, a little jewel that became the inspiration for an irresistibly chic backdrop. “I call the home ‘Fifty Shades of Purple,’” Lichi says. While each space presents its own curated collection of striking surprises, continuity pervades the home with a seamless above and right:

Swirls of amethyst immediately capture the eye in the bar area, where OM Furniture’s tufted-velvet bar chairs offer an ideal spot to enjoy a cocktail. Wrapped in a silvery texture, a column glimmers with a sculptural trio of glass and mother-of-pearl flowers. Beyond, Gianti’s purple and rose chenille fashions transitional chairs encircling a glass-topped dining table based in striking acrylic shards that continue the jewel-like luminosity.

Choosing to keep the existing mahogany crown molding, Lichi glamorized it by coating the dentil molding with a silver-leaf finish. One of the main features of the home is the bar area, where an amethyst wall resides. Purple striations and swirls glimmer while illuminating the space through a translucent material. “I wanted it to look like a giant jewel that lights up the room,” Lichi says. The bar is topped with polished white crystalline stone and faced in shimmering faux leather with a snakeskin texture. Diamond-tufted, high back chairs are swathed in a soft velvet that casts an iridescent effect from the violet reflection of the feature wall. In the dining area, ribbons of Murano glass flown in from Italy — the clients’ own chandelier that could not be left out — draw the eyes up and around the space. “It’s like jewelry that adds a little more glam,” the designer says. left:

Bold purple velvet club chairs have a modern appeal with the Greek key pattern of polished nickel arms that exude the epitome of glamour. A sculptural Lucite accent table centers the chairs, while a beautiful Murano glass chandelier with amethyst glass and crystals is a statement piece that is so compelling it cannot be ignored. This grouping is accentuated by a hand-tufted, wool and silk area rug with five shades of purple, whites and grays fused together forming a damask pattern.

The master bedroom is romanticized with a dash of sparkle. A chandelier with crystal droplets dazzles above Whiteline’s tufted bed, curvy high back chairs in chrome, and a silver leaf cabinet fronted in sunbursts that mimic the oversized mirror from Howard Elliot.

Nearby, a separate sitting area offers some seclusion without breaking the flow of design or disrupting the ocean views. Here, a tufted velvet sofa is so luxurious, it beckons relaxation. In the private spaces, the master bedroom is toned down with soft shades of mauve, pink and eggplant to radiate a sleek and modern aesthetic. A white tufted bed centers the space, while the cabinet’s silver-leaf sunbursts surprise and the curvy chrome styling of the high back chairs add a dimension of reflectivity. “It’s a very sensuous look,” Lichi says. “One that flows throughout this home that is filled with happiness and bountiful color.”

Colombian-born Juan Montoya was just the international designer to create the perfect home to showcase one couple’s expansive collection of art. Envisioned as a vast architectural canvas, this 10,000-square-foot Italianate villa in Golden Beach is designed to present some of the major sculptors, painters and artisans of our time. Montoya, with connections to artisanal upholstering workshops in France, little-known quarries in Italy, and his own sense of artistic scale and color, collaborated with the owners to style a brilliant backdrop for breathtaking art.
