Scarlet Lady will have access to Richard’s Rooftop, a private and secluded place to bask in the sun or enjoy a cocktail under the stars. See page 60.

CELEBRATING THE SEASON Take a look inside these pages as Florida Design

Miami Edition delivers with a sneak peek at some of Miami’s most magnificent homes from a newly renovated 9,076-square-foot home originally built in 1925 to a newly built 3,900-square-foot, island-style retreat that transitions beautifully into a modern day setting in Key Largo. In addition, this issue offers a glimpse of the most recent trends in casual furnishings as signature pieces for the spring and summer seasons celebrate South Florida’s luxury outdoor lifestyle. Then, step aboard Virgin Voyages’ first ship, the adults-only Scarlet Lady. Due to set sail from Miami to the Caribbean in 2020, Sir Richard Branson welcomes guests to cruise like a rock star. Wherever you are in Miami — the Atlantic Ocean, the Intracoastal Waterway or Miami’s Biscayne Bay — the lure of the tropics is never far away. Whether arriving by land, air or sea, our beautiful weather makes Miami a prime destination. And there’s no better place to relax and enjoy the fun this summer than the sunny shores of South Florida.

pring is upon us and this time of year Miami comes to life with

beautifully cool evenings and sunshine-filled days, inviting us to spend time outside. Having summer all year round is one of the best perks of living in the tropics and truly what draws people from all over the world to our beautiful city. This issue our focus is on outdoor living, something South Florida knows how to do very well. Featuring brands like the Sedona Collection from Clima Outdoor and the playful “Spun” chair by Magis, we give you the best pieces for creating the perfect outdoor space for you and your family to enjoy, whether it be for your balcony or backyard. Highlighting the eclectic array of design that Miami offers: skyline city views, oceanfront mansions and traditional Key West-inspired beach homes, this city is bursting with design talent, and this issue shows off just that. There is never a shortage of inspiration in the Magic City. Stay tuned for next issue where we’ll bring you the best in Kitchens & Baths and luxury Real Estate. It is one not to be missed! or an owner with a passion for elegance and modern Italian design, this unique home in Coral Gables — just

down the street from the legendary Biltmore Hotel — seemed the perfect fit. Nestled within a quaint, quiet setting, the lavish historical home features a pool, outdoor kitchen, and splendid backyard overlooking Hole #1 of the plush neighborhood golf course. Originally built in 1925, the 9,076-square-foot dwelling had been renovated and altered a few times over the years. “I have known this client for more than a decade, and we have enjoyed working on a couple of projects together over the years,” interior designer Lindsay Pumpa says. “This is the homeowner’s primary residence, and he absolutely loves the historic neighborhood.” This particular area has many houses dating more than 100 years old, and

Pietro’s expansive dining room table and high-back chairs from Cassoni lend a sleek elegance to the decidedly minimalist dining space. the streets are lined with homes in a variety of different architectural styles and gorgeous landscaping. The trees drape over the streets, lending a real sense of history and establishment. During their initial meeting, the client expressed his predilection for Italian Modern furniture and design, but he also wanted to keep some of the original and more traditional details and build-outs found throughout this historical dwelling. Pumpa’s goal to blend the owner’s modern tastes with a more classically built residence immediately captivates upon entry. Drawing the eyes up and around the great room, the ceilings were raised in both the living and dining rooms and rebuilt to mirror the original design. To achieve this effect, new box beams were added as well as a layering of crown moldings and trims. “I stuck to a simplistic color scheme of grays, beiges and blues — a favorite of both mine and the homeowner,” the designer says. “I tend to favor neutral palettes with only one or two shades. I think it keeps things a bit more classic and prevents the owners from tiring of the colors and the decor.” At the homeowner’s request, the furnishings bespeak a distinctive Italian modern style featuring sleek, clean lines and forms, but covered in a variety of rich textures including velvets,

leathers, suedes, and lacquered woods to create subtle contrast. Pumpa introduced a few pieces with traditional embellishments, such as tufted upholstery and handcrafted turned legs to complement the home’s classic architectural details. Polished marble flooring flows through to the dining room, where a streamlined dining ensemble provides the perfect minimalist backdrop for artist Alex Katz’ vibrantly graphic tulip painting. Calvin Klein’s plush area rug anchors the inviting space. A show-stopping focal point, the custom wine room displaying hundreds of bottles behind glass doors beckons guests to the favorite family hangout. “The kitchen is by far the heart of the home,” Pumpa says. “This space had to be special and large enough to accommodate an entire family who loves to cook.” With the spectacular glass wine room and open layout into the living room and bar area, it lends itself to great entertaining.” In contrast, the master bedroom is a sanctuary of sorts, awash in a tranquil monochromatic palette and cocooned in a luxurious mix of fabrics that includes an expansive wall of drapery-covered windows and oak hardwood to ground the space in warmth. Blending classic style with modern Italian design lends a sense of both grandeur and comfort throughout.

RAUL PIERREND “Designing is dreaming. To be invited in to design ones most personal space is truly an honor. I feel privileged to be able to create beautiful spaces where one can live and feel happy in their surroundings.”

W

hen interior designer Raul Pierrend becomes involved in a home’s

redesign, he gives it his all. “This was a complete remodel in Coral Gables. We tore the entire house down to the studs. It was rebuilt and redesigned from there,” he says of this 5,942-square-foot house first built as a “Mediterranean Transitional” in the Nineties and reimagined nearly two decades later as a “Contemporary Modern” by Pierrend, who collaborated with architect Nelson de Leon. The original home had an open floor plan but little spatial definition, with flat white ceilings, beige marble flooring, and a mishmash of smaller glass windows and doors. The homeowners — a pair of empty nesters — were looking for a clean-lined, sophisticated, yet comfortable home. “Working within the home’s existing footprint, we squared off all the arches, and refinished all the floors in

Brazilian chestnut. Before, there was no texture, contrast or warmth,” de Leon says.

RIGHT:

Upon entry, the ceiling height instantly pulls

the eye up and around the great room. An airy glass wine room crafted by Wine Cellar International immediately captivates, while an impressive wall sconce from Light Bulbs Unlimited follows the linear progression of the textured wall covering.

“IN MY TRAVELS TO LONDON, ITALY AND FRANCE, I SEE MANY STYLES OF FURNISHINGS SUCH AS THE LIVING AREA’S COCKTAIL TABLE IN A SQUARE SHAPE,” THE DESIGNER SAYS. “SO, I DESIGNED THIS ONE IN A CIRCLE FORM AND HAD MY CARPENTER BUILD IT.”

An inviting entry sets the tone for the transformation, from bland Mediterranean to a sleek, contemporary style. A shoji-style double front door with overhead transoms opens to a half-wall clad in leathered Italian marble on one side and a custom wine room on the other. “The homeowners are big entertainers and wine connoisseurs, so we decided to make the former powder room into a statement wine cellar,” Pierrend says of the glassed-in feature that steps down into the main living area. Layered degrees of spatial definition are integral to the overall design in the main living areas, where textured wall covering rises to the ceiling’s 22-foot height to delineate the doorway to the private spaces, while Italian tile climbs the fireplace feature wall nearby. “One of the big things we did in this house was to open up the back. We put in a double-height sliding doors and enlarged windows finished in ‘dark bronze’ steel,” de Leon says. “There is now a 2-story-high wall of glass to visually connect the interior to the pool and gardens beyond.”

AN ORGANIC LAYERED WOOD COCKTAIL TABLE PAIRS WITH A GRAY VELVET SECTIONAL SOFA, BOTH FROM JUDITH NORMAN, TO SHAPE A FAVORITE GATHERING SPOT IN THE FAMILY ROOM. BEHIND THE SOFA, SACCARO’S LAMP ADDS A WHIMSICAL ECHO.

Pierrend wanted to create a “dreamy feel” in the home to make it unique. Instead of furnishing the living area with the obvious choice of sofas, he chose to float a quartet of squared-off club chairs around a custom circular cocktail table designed with shiny brass detail. “The home has a lot of sweeping ceiling height, so I took my time to find the right lighting,” the designer says. Six crystal-drop pendants in a platinum finish sparkle above the curvature of a marble-topped bar that sits between the living area and family room. But the most spectacular light fixture by far is the cascading glass-and brass chandelier in the dining area. Here, the palette, like the rest of the home, is of warm neutrals. “We chose clean-lined furnishings to mix the modern forms with the classic art and accessories,” Pierrend says. “This way they do not compete with each other and can be appreciated individually.” Of course, in true Florida style, the back of the house open ups for large parties, where guests can meander through the living area, past the curved bar, and onto the loggia that’s perfect for open-air entertainment.

LOURDES SUAREZ Good design begins with understanding how people live their daily life in their home. I create bold beauty, sometimes quiet, sometimes not, depending upon the client’s personality. Life is often challenging; home should be one’s refuge.

W

hile strolling through her Coconut Grove neighborhood, Marilyn “Missy” Saltzman spotted a spectacular new, two-story home, just around the corner

from where she and her husband, Jay Koenigsberg, lived at the time. Only 300 feet from Biscayne Bay and situated high on a natural ridge so flooding was not a concern, Saltzman was smitten. Two days later the house was theirs. Without delay, the couple commissioned their friend, interior designer Lourdes Suarez, to design the 3,400-square-foot, open-concept residence. “I knew they needed

a lot of entertaining options that run the gamut from having his parents over to hosting 50 to 60 guests for the Super Bowl,” Suarez says. “They love to entertain at home.” Inspiration for the home’s organic vibe and neutral palette stems from the natural habitat visible from the great room and kitchen. The interior white walls provided a blank canvas for wall coverings and artwork, which the designer used to pull the large, open first floor together. A fan of the unexpected, Suarez marries unrelated pieces. As such, the foyer’s crystal “Cloud” pendant lights mimic an unusual mirror — neither round nor oval — that dots the wall above the couple’s charming rosewood cabinet. “A home should be a beautiful refuge,” she says. “Each house should have the imprint of the owners.”

Reclaimed wood “totems” preside over the great room, where a central lounge area offers an intimate spot to sit and chat. Nearby, the living area’s walnut entertainment unit fit with Bang & Olufsen speakers fronts a comfortable grouping shaped with the owners’ leather-clad sofa, a Milo Baughman swivel chair and Jalan Jalan’s oversized cocktail ottoman.

Just beyond the foyer, a floating walnut bar accented with hand-carved, square wood tiles announces the lounge area. Mounted against a wall of butterflies and dragonflies fluttering their wings of painted gold, this magnificent, organic piece commands attention. Anchoring the side wall of the bar area, custom leather slings hold the owners’ collection of red wine. As strong a statement as the masculine-feeling bar is, the more feminine seating in the lounge area beckons guests. Mid-century, metal-framed, club chairs pair with a trio of satin brass accent tables to create a central setting in the great room for small intimate gatherings. The area rug’s individual strips of cowhide circle around the open space to pull the design together.

11/8/18 11:41 AM

Moooi’s “Heracleum” chandelier branches out above the dining room’s lacquered walnut table and Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams’ “Remy” chairs. The couple’s friend, glass artist Marlene Rose, created the Air to Water Buddha wall sculpture.

In the living area, Suarez used the wood’s grain to break up the oversized, walnut entertainment cabinet. The couple’s “Trevor” sofa by Nicoline provides ample seating for family gatherings inside, while glass doors slide open to invite larger parties to enjoy the loggia complete with a summer kitchen that includes an outdoor pizza oven. Koenigsberg delights family and friends almost weekly with new pizza recipes. On the other side of the great room, oceanic hues color the dining area that beckons all to sit and relax for a while. Atmosphere, an enigmatic abstract by artist Héctor Taedo, captures the energy of the space. When the two ample dome lights over the kitchen island first arrived, Saltzman was certain they were too large. Once installed, she quickly changed her mind. To maximize the small space adjacent to the island, the designer adjoined two long, cushioned benches for additional seating.

Calm and serene, the second-floor master bedroom is the couple’s favorite room in the house. With the use of organic materials and the subtle play of scale and light, it’s all about harmony. “The natural light and the trees do all the work to connect one with nature,” Suarez says. “It feels like you’re living in a tree house.” What began with a foundation of trust and friendship ends with the couple’s new “forever” home designed for entertaining and functionality. “We walk around the house and just smile,” Saltzman says. “We’ve lived here for a year, and we love it.” ABOVE:

Everything in this gourmet kitchen works for the owners, from the white oak washed cabinetry topped in Opustone’s

white quartz to the light-gray, swivel counter stools. Feiss’ large dome pendants from Lumens cast circles of light, while state-of-the-art appliances and a custom-designed, cushioned bench complete the culinary space.

KEY LARGO retreat ONE CREATIVE DESIGN TEAM STYLES A CONTEMPORARY ISLAND-STYLE VACATION HOME WITHOUT LOSING THE TRADITIONAL FLORIDA KEYS VIBE

INTERIOR DESIGN BY MAITE GRANDA, INTERIORS BY MAITE, KEY BISCAYNE, FL ARCHITECTURE BY J. ROBERT BARNES, ROBERT BARNES & ASSOCIATES, HOMESTEAD, FL BUILDER RAMON PLAZA, ELDAN ENTERPRISE, INC., MIAMI, FL TEXT BY LINDA MARX PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATTIA BETTINELLI, MILAN, ITALY

A

s his parents advanced in age, Jonathan Lessner bought their little Key Largo mobile home getaway to keep it in the family. Unable to

ignore its deterioration over time, he eventually chose to demolish the mobile home and build a 3,900-square-foot island-style house that opens onto the water. Since the lot has a beautiful view of the bay looking toward the Gulf of Mexico, Lessner wanted something special. “The allure of my parent’s mobile home was always the water, so I wanted to create a wonderful vacation home for my family to visit and at the same time pay homage to my parent’s original home,” says Lessner, who grew up in Miami and now lives in Wilmington, Delaware. “Highlighting the water and having open space with no clutter and easy maintenance was very important to me.” Lessner teamed up with building contractor Ramon Plaza, who introduced him to architect Robert Barnes and interior designer Maite Granda. The team was eager to bring their concept of fun, family and the Florida Keys

into the home. “Jonathan wanted a simple, happy home for family get-togethers,” Granda says. “My main concern was to keep the interiors beautiful and functional with the feeling of a Florida Keys home.” The designer tapped Lessner’s passion with her use of texture and color, especially accents in bright blue, yellow and orange wrapped within crisp white walls. He loved the way her design reflected the island living with tongue-and-groove ceilings reminiscent of a boat, clean wood flooring, and modern lighting from LED high hats. “I wanted an upscale design but not opulent,” says Lessner, who was very involved with the design process together with his son, Alec. “I like a Florida Keys look but with open views of the water … I wanted that to be the focal point of the home. Maite and Robert understood my desire for an open feel with everything

in one large space so I could be together with my family, including the times my mother, and my sister and brother with their families join us.” When Barnes designed this vacation island-style house, his biggest challenge was to maximize its size on the property and create a ventilation system that didn’t interfere with the details. “We didn’t want the beams running into the air conditioning ducts,” Barnes says. “But the process went well, and we had no major issues.” Understanding Lessner’s desire to honor the memories created in his parents’ home, Granda began the design of the waterfront great room, a spacious combination of indoor and outdoor living spaces, including the dining area and kitchen. She kept his parents’ solid wood round dining table and restored it in white, adding wood Roven Concept wishbone chairs to suit the casual island theme. She also scattered famil-

Just off the balcony, a stunning spiral stairway was created for family and friends coming out of the water wearing wet bathing suits. They climb the stairs to their rooms or to a rooftop perch — which has a million-dollar view — without walking through the house. In the sitting area off the great room, a brightly colored acrylic on canvas, It’s A Mod, Mod World by artist Robin Hiers, provides an artistic focal point in this comfortable intimate grouping. “I wanted the vivid beach scene to mix with the colorful throws and accent pillows to style a lively yet calming sitting area,” Granda says.

“This space is away from the action in the great room and gives family members a quiet place for reading, relaxing, or just being alone.”Family memories wrap a hallway with a gallery of pictures from Lessner’s life. Similarly, in the kids’ bedroom, artistic images from Etsy that reflect an activity each of his four children has enjoyed over the years. The designer created a colorful wall gallery across from the custom bunk bed. In the master bedroom, Granda designed a vignette to enjoy fabulous water views from bed. A colorful rectangular water scene dots the wall above the bed to bring out the waterside colors of the furnishings. “I know how Jonathan loves these colors,” she says. “He became so alive when he saw the views of the ocean

and sun from the master, so I brought more blue and yellow into his room.” Having worked hard to achieve their goal of designing a sophisticated vacation home with an island vibe, both designer and client are thrilled with the results. “This home is perfect to me and easily exceeded my wildest expectations,” Lessner says.

hen you say “South Florida,” it is likely brilliant beaches, swaying palms and

dramatic architectural geometry come to mind. But while those idyllic images have made Florida famous, there are pockets of a different kind of charm. Florida Vernacular is a style found in a seasoned neighborhood near Coral Gables. To describe the architecture, interior designer Amy Herman references the symmetrical layout found in Georgian Square homes, while the homeowners think of elements such as wainscoting that seem throwbacks to a time when family and familial comforts were paramount. It would be up to Herman and architect David Johnson to accentuate this charm and “bring on the modernity” in a newly built, 5,600-square-foot house. In the days before air-conditioning, the wide central hall, reaching from the front door to the back provided for air flow. Here, watched over by a four-legged observer, the long expanse offers a view of the pool. Transom windows, airy central halls, and exotic, wide-plank angelim flooring from Brazil all suggest another time, perhaps another place, where warm breezes whispered and Old South practicality blended into a lifestyle. Down the hallway, a quick peek outside to the mosaic-lined pool finds the garden ready for family and friends to enjoy lemonade or a cool mint julip. Period-style wicker seating makes the perfect setting for firefly watching and later, counting stars.

In the dining room, Thomas Pheasant’s oval mirror

from Baker resonates with Emanuel Morez’ burled oak table and the elongated curves of the oval-backed chairs from Stephen Baker Turner. “Though the coffered ceilings aren’t necessarily part of Florida Vernacular, they are beautiful,” interior designer Amy Herman says.

Herman immediately knew she had come across something precious when she discovered the dining room’s mural-like art — an example of how Florida Vernacular encompasses even art. “One of four panels, this large painting hung in a Florida diner for years and years,” the designer says. “When the diner went out of business, even though covered in grease, I managed to acquire the pieces.” Now, this cleaned-up, 1956 Mildred Harty landscape has found a proper home. A hand-blown glass chandelier from Pagani adds to the subtle charm. On the other side of the hall, the great room is a study in calming grays. The muted tones allow the “empty nester” owners to play with art surprises and favorite pieces that have followed them from house to house. An elongated oval cocktail ottoman catches the eye with its laser-cut cowhide covering and polished chrome legs.

LEFT AND BELOW:

Holly Hunt’s sofa lines a social grouping in the living area, where “legs” lend

their special rhythm. From the stylized cabriole curves of Rose Tarlow’s mahogany occasional tables to the very delicate supports of Barbara Barry’s accent table, to the elongated “gams” of Century Furniture’s kid leather-clad stools in the bar area, the dark silhouettes are standouts.

Robert Kuo’s metal repousse lamps illuminate the social space, where good conversation can happen between the deep-seated sofa and Jacque Garcia’s updated “Verdi” wing chair in blue-gray chenille. Steps away, a walnut and chrome-faced bar adds to the comfort of the great room. A sisal and jute area rug runs the expanse to include a game table topped in painted lacquer and surrounded by Roche Bobois chairs. Boldly overseeing the board game competitions is another of Herman’s serendipitous finds. “She found a newly arrived Cuban artist on the streets of Miami with this dramatic painting wrapped in burlap,” the owner says. “It was a must-have!” A sunny Italian poster shines in the breakfast area’s serving alcove designed with glass shelving. Hudson Valley’s pear-shaped pendants illuminate the glistening white kitchen, where a thick Calacatta gold marble

makes for unusual counter geology with its scattered striae of gold. To ground the culinary space, the designer “punched” out patterns, inserted black tiles and made her own unique flooring decor. Combining simple charm with elegant sophistication, the first-floor master bedroom seems to take its palette from the art above the bed. Artist Philip Tsiaras used taupes, blues and reds in his bold figurative piece; Herman does the same in the private area. Taupe suede on the head and footboards of the quasi-period painted wood bed suggests an indefinite provenance. A bolstered bench wrapped in cut-velvet is topped with playful red geometry that seems to wink at the painting above. And adding a touch of whimsy, McGuire’s “cracked ice” chair of silvered bent wood stands ready at the desk. Set in the cached stairway where soaring walls are covered with Shaker-style wainscoting, a 30-year-old cowhide-covered chair and a cherished glass egg command the landing. There are just some things and some places that say “home.”

3/11/19 4:12 PM

Not everything has to match — especially when designer-coordinated. A custom-painted bed from Karges joins a Barbara Berry desk in caned espresso wood from Baker and a bolstered bench from Judith Norman to create magic in the master bedroom.

MICKY HURLEY In general, the design must reflect not only the owners and their life experiences, but also the context, nature and geographic location. Oftentimes, overlooking these simple details is precisely what makes a space feel overly decorated.

old miami magic INTERIOR DESIGNER MICKY HURLEY KEEPS THINGS SIMPLE — AND SIMPLY LOVELY — IN A PIED-À-TERRE BY THE SEA INTERIOR DESIGN BY MICKY HURLEY, MICKY HURLEY INTERIORS, ART, ANTIQUES, NEW YORK, NY TEXT BY MARINA BROWN PHOTOGRAPHY BY TROY CAMPBELL, MIAMI, FL

icky Hurley’s interior designs often ignite bursts of color, dazzle with voluptuous antiques, and

create a swelling harmonic of contemporary art and exotic treasure. Bold, sure and as unafraid of wielding color, as might be Gauguin in a paint store, Micky Hurley’s South American/American aesthetic seems made for one with a taste for elegance. All of that is fitting for a man whose grandmother was a baroness, who dined with Pavarotti and Baryshnikov, who has aperitifs with Chilean Presidents, and who takes his wife and children on luxurious sailing voyages to the world’s most elegant destinations. But there is another side to Hurley. This is the man who loves to come to a renovated 1,200-square-foot condo overlooking Biscayne Bay — a 1963 building with astonishing views — a warm nexus of tranquility.

RIGHT: With two sofas, one, a white slip-covered Bunny Williams

nail-head piece covered in simple white cotton with grosgrain ribbon detail in navy blue, and purchased from Christie’s, a vintage sofa styled in a yellow Lee Jofa linen slipcover, Hurley sets a comfortable motif. A paisley from Ralph Lauren covers the bespoke tufted swivel chair that faces the water view.

BELOW LEFT :

Interior designer Mickey Hurley keeps the casual

attitude by combining found pieces, beach chairs, antiques from Christie’s, and within his palette of blue and white, the occasional burst of sunshine and butter-yellow. The large-scale yellow artwork above the living area’s serving table is a print by artist Sam Francis.

With Hurley’s many interior design assignments in the Palm Beach and Key Biscayne areas, this residence is a centrally located getaway where he and his wife can rejuvenate and unwind. “Laid back, with low maintenance… this is a place where we can walk with sandy feet,” he says. The palette is what distinguishes this setting. Blues and whites in every conceivable combination: stripes, paisleys, geometrical swirls dance throughout the apartment in a way that is at once calming and thrilling. “I like to use blue and white when I decorate beach homes,” Hurley says. Though it depends on the project, he admits he loves the juxtaposition of white and sea blue, finding it “refreshing and timeless.” The living area dazzles in the classic hues. Shiplap walls overlooking Biscayne Bay suggest the intimacy of a Bahamian cottage. The drama in bold geometry and exotic patterns lend to the sensation of “getting away for pure relaxation.”

ABOVE A BAMBOO DIRECTOR’S CHAIR CACHED IN A HALL, HURLEY HAS COMMEMORATED A POLO MATCH PLAYED BY HIS MATERNAL GRANDFATHER, GUSTAVO, AS HE COMPETED IN ARGENTINA AND CHILE IN THE 1950S.

Seemingly captivated by intricate, recurring patterns, Hurley chose two handcrafted Bidri cocktail tables from Jalan Jalan. Carved from a single piece of wood, now painted white, they are the exotic anchors uniting the dramatic fabrics’ patterns. Yellow “flash points” seem tiny bursts of sunshine scattered in both art and floral arrangements throughout the rooms. Bringing the outside in and inside out, beach chairs are scattered throughout the apartment and balcony. Unafraid to bring a little sand on their shoes into their getaway, Hurley wants visitors to feel relaxed and peaceful, entranced by the view. “The condo ended up feeling like a cozy Bahamian cottage,” Hurley says. That

exotica flows through to the master bedroom, where fabric choices range from Matouk bed linens, and on the headboard, no-nonsense stripes from Ralph Lauren, to African indigo textiles. Hurley had lumbar pillows created from such faraway textiles; then combined them with Roberta Roller Rabbit accent pillows. Though a natural weave base covers the bedroom floor, throws and patterned fabrics seem artistically scattered both there and as tapestry on the bed. “Like Delft porcelain and Chinese faience, the exquisite contrast between blue and white is mesmerizing,” the designer says. That juxtaposition between “Bahamian cottage” and the suggestion of faraway treasure carried on a 17th-century trading ship bring a kind of luster to pure relaxation.

A BOOK, A GLASS OF WINE, OR SIMPLY A CROISSANT AT BREAKFAST IS MEANT TO BE ENJOYED CURLED UP ON THE CASUAL BANQUETTE OVERLOOKING THE SEA. “SPACE WELL USED DOESN’T HAVE TO BE HUGE,” HURLEY SAYS. In a charming nook just off the kitchen, Hurley combines custom bookcases from Woodshop Miami with an antique bench covered in pale blue velvet. Vertical shiplap reappears to enhance the ambiance of the beachside cottage’s simplicity. Rich in indigo, the tablecloth from India pairs with other bursts of color including a humble flask of Florida gold to quench the thirst. As a designer with international clientele, who was himself born into a South American world of impeccable taste, it is clear Micky Hurley could have shaped a private getaway with any furnishing or style he chose. But the warmth and embrace of this beautifully, but simply furnished pied-à-terre creates “Old Miami” magic on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. M

BEACH CLUB YACHTING The Benetti M/Y Seasense, defined by its luxuriously unique beachside ambiance, offers the ultimate indoor-outdoor yachting experience. PHOTOGRAPHY BY COURTESY OF AZIMUT-BENETTI GROUP

Italian megayachyt builder Benetti unveiled its 220-foot Benetti M/Y Seasense custom superyacht with luxurious contemporary features that recall the sea. Dutch designer Cor D. Rover styled the exteriors with what he calls his “Benetti beach club concept” — a design that evokes the feeling of relaxing on the beach. Surrounded by teak planking that lends the space an open airy feel, is a massive freshwater swimming pool edged by bold blue, umbrella-shaded lounge chairs. Located on the aft deck, it is considered Olympic size for a superyacht pool. It can be converted to a basketball court or a dance floor for evening fun, when carbon fiber panels are assembled on top of the water. A nearby dining area, set with a table that accommodates 12, is also perfect for poolside entertaining. continued on 136 ABOVE:

ABOVE AND BELOW:

A $25 million renovation touches every aspect of the

Cheeca Lodge & Spa including the main lodge and all 214 guestrooms, suites and bungalows, meeting and event spaces, the serene spa, multiple dining venues and the stunning palm-fringed grounds.

CHEECA LODGE & SPA Islamorada, Florida

A

tropical paradise in the Florida Keys, Cheeca Lodge & Spa, welcomes guests back to a refreshed and reimagined aesthetic that restores

its classic moniker of barefoot elegance through a modern-day lens. The iconic 27-acre independent luxury resort in Islamorada reintroduces the seamless blend of oceanside luxury and casual comfort through a $25 million renovation that touches every aspect of the resort. Award-winning design firm EoA Group was tasked to breathe new life into some of the property’s marquee features, including its iconic main lodge. Capturing the charm of the Florida Keys, the newly designed lobby is inviting, understated and speaks to both the essence of the destination and the resort’s signature, warm island hospitality. Design firm R.D. Jones oversaw the renovation and redesign of all 214 guestrooms, where hints of traditionalism pair with modern touchpoints to continue the nature-inspired narrative that begins from the moment a guest arrives at the lodge.
