Most families have holiday traditions. In our family, we embrace a curious mix of American and Greek Christmas rituals, some traditional and others uniquely ours. For example, we have our 12-year-old twins make something every year; it could be an ornament, or a dish for Christmas Eve dinner, or a holiday-inspired work of art. Our cookie baking always includes kourabiethes and melomakarona, in addition to gingerbread men. And we have two gift-giving occasions (our kids are particularly fond of this one): Christmas morning, per our adopted homeland, and on New Year’s Eve, when Saint Basil (the Greek version of Santa Claus) visits. Meghan and Justin Leckey have their own mixed traditions, which they share with their two young children and extended family. Each Christmas season, for example, they ask 30 of their closest friends and neighbors to come to dinner wearing their pajamas. But for Christmas Eve and Day, they create an elegant winter wonderland with festive decor and a roaring fire (never mind that it’s 80 degrees outside!). Since Meghan owns a catering company and Shooters Waterfront restaurant, the food is always off the charts. We take you inside their joyful celebration in “Catering to Christmas” on page 60. This month we also present a special cover story featuring Miami Heat player Tyler Herro. Tyler models looks from the new Louis Vuitton men’s store in the Design District with a swagger and irreverence only a 21-year-old superstar could pull off. And because it’s also the season for art, we have compiled a guide to Miami Art Week, which blissfully returns this month after a year’s hibernation. The project culminates with the build-out and redesign of DC Alexander Park, which will soon feature a play area and observation deck. Neighborhood Guide While north Fort Lauderdale has been gaining traction, TREDD, the Tarpon River Entertainment & Design District, is the next neighborhood heating up. Season’s Greetings After a year’s hiatus due to the pandemic, the Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest Boat Parade makes its return this December 11, promising a dynamic program and new surprises. In honor of the “Best Show on H2O” and its fiftieth anniversary, FLI caught up with Lisa Scott Founds, who has helmed the organization for 25 years, to discuss her favorite moments and what to expect this year. FLI: What’s your earliest memory of the parade? Scott Founds: I can remember attending the first one—going down and taking a blanket [with family]. We would go every year following. We’d watch all the decorated boats. It wasn’t like a parade back in the day, more just a gathering and very organic. Tell us about this year’s theme. The theme is “50 years of Hardrockin’ Fun.” We’re focusing on breaking it out into decades and the significant visuals or thoughts that identify with a certain decade. It can be anything fun: a band, a play, a singer, a movie—anything that really stuck out to that person who’s putting together the boat.

y heart pounds and my legs shake as I scramble up a muddy, 65-degree slope in the thick of Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. It’s been an arduous three-hour ascent through mist-shrouded forest, blanketed in stinging nettles and prickly thistle plants, but the reward is near. I am just minutes away from consummating a wildlife lover’s ultimate dream: face time with the critically endangered mountain gorilla. The excitement is palpable. I’m glued to my guide, Jolie, as something scurries through near-impenetrable thickets above. Our tracker machetes a narrow path forward and six members of the Agashya family come into view. Jolie vocalizes a series of guttural groans, informing the gorilla troop that we come in peace. Within seconds, the dominant silverback—one of three silverbacks in this family of

21—decides to investigate our presence. He comes as close as inches away, literally breathing down our necks. It’s at once scary, surreal, exhilarating, beautiful, and inspiring. I’ve never felt more alive. Soon enough, the silverback returns to the other gorillas, and we officially commence our single precious hour observing the family, a time limit set by the Rwandan government to minimize human-gorilla interactions. In that hour, I forge a lifetime of memories, enamored by young blackbacks wrestling and tumbling down the slopes, elders foraging for food, and an inquisitive newborn sneaking a glimpse of the commotion from his mother’s clutch. I watch my greatest Planet Earth fantasies unfold in real time—and this live show doesn’t disappoint. The following day brings a search for the Amahoro family, another of Rwanda’s 20 known gorilla troops, through the jungled thicket of northern Rwanda’s volcanoes. The physical journey to reach them is less difficult than the previous one, but the emotional journey is equally poignant. As recently as a few years ago, such epic gorilla experiences were the extent of Rwanda’s safari footprint. But so much has changed in so little time. In the last decade, the “Land of a Thousand Hills” has risen above a rocky past to become the African continent’s biggest success story in terms of safety, economic growth, and as an exemplar of wildlife tourism and conservation. Case in point: I’m on a two-week custom Rwanda safari with outfitter Micato Safaris (micato.com), often named the world’s top safari company. My national itinerary includes not only gorilla trekking but also chimpanzee trekking, a Big Five safari, and luxuriating in some of the newest—and best—lodges on the entire African safari circuit. Prior to arriving in Volcanoes National Park, I had basked in the glory of Rwanda’s secret, enchanted forest: Nyungwe. Following my mandatory one-day quarantine in the capital city of Kigali, Micato arranged a helicopter transfer to western Rwanda and a stay at the One&Only Nyungwe House (oneandonly resorts.com), a stunning 22-room

of the national park, strewn with 21 freestanding lodges and suites. Each unit is a masterpiece in transitional indoor-outdoor design, framed in elaborate woodwork and adorned in modernist furnishings and patterned soft goods that define African chic. Winding pathways lead to a boutique spa, multiple restaurants, and experiential venues, including the past residence of famed wildlife expert Jack Hanna and a boma used for dance performances. On the opposite end of the national park, the eightsuite Singita Kwitonda Lodge also wows as a series of minimalist, jewel box–like sanctuaries, hewn from volcanic rock, river stone, handmade ceramic tiles, and oven-red clay bricks made by surrounding communities. Suites and common areas maximize volcano views through wide glass expanses and exude romance in the mist thanks to private heated plunge pools, outdoor fir places, and cozy nooks (don’t miss sampling a few glasses of South African reds in the wine cellar). Singita’s vegetable garden yields pristine ingredients that the lodge’s chefs theatrically prepare in an interactive kitchen. While

property set within a working tea plantation at the edge of Nyungwe National Park. Here, the search for smaller primates headlines the daily agenda thanks to an impressive 13 species, including Earth’s largest troop of Angolan black-and-white colobus monkeys (more than 500 strong), thriving populations of L’Hoest’s monkeys, and two families of chimpanzees. There’s also exceptional birdwatching, with more than 300 species represented, including 28 endemics like the red-collared mountain-babbler and the breathtaking Rwenzori turaco. More than action-packed wildlife spotting, One&Only Nyungwe House promises an exotic African escape steeped in wellness, culture, and style. The infinity pool, spa, and dining areas are positioned such that the sights and sounds of towering forests and undulating tea hedges continuously feed the soul. Stilted, tree-top guest rooms and suites house outdoor salas, idyllic for pairing jungle immersion with morning coffee and evening wine. Interiors reflect Rwandan charm, underscored by grand displays of agaseke (traditional Rwandese basket work) and imigongo (a geometric art form exclusive to Rwanda). From Nyungwe, I venture north to Volcanoes National Park alongside my personal Micato driver and safari director—such personnel plus a private 4x4 are standard on a Custom Micato Safari—and begin an extended stay in prime gorilla real estate, splitting my time between One&Only Gorilla’s Nest (oneandonlyresorts.com) and Singita Kwitonda Lodge (singita.com). gorilla trekking initially anchored my stays at both properties, each merits classification as a restorative nature retreat, not just a posh base for bucket-list wildlife outings. Riding high from epic primate trekking and unparalleled pampering, I round out my Micato Rwanda journey by heading east to Akagera National Park, near the border with Tanzania. Much of the 433-square-mile park was destroyed during and after the civil war in the 1990s, but by 2010 the Rwanda Development Board and the African Parks Network were rehabilitating the land and restoring Central Africa’s largest protected wetland to its former splendor. With the 2017 reintroduction of the black rhino, Akagera officially regained Big Five status. Nowadays, it’s entirely possible to enjoy a quintessential East Africa safari and witness the fruits of conservation in action at Magashi, a haute tented camp by Wilderness Safaris (wilderness-safaris. com). Given the mix of savannah, montane, and wetland habits, expect excursions by both 4X4 and boat, in search of water-loving species

such as hippos, crocs, and fish eagles along with savannah superstars like elephants, lions, and leopards, which have adapted to a diet of catfish from Lake Rwanyakazinga as a main source of protein. Notwithstanding the country’s new identity, mountain gorillas—and our intrinsic desire to observe them—will continue to anchor safaris in

Rwanda. AIR FORCE Capable of gliding up to 520 miles on a single charge, the 2022 Lucid Air is a true game changer By Howard Walker I’ve gazed at the future of four-wheeled luxury, and it’s got a plug attached. Right around now, Lucid Motors out in Casa Grande, Arizona, is ramping up production of its groundbreaking all-electric Lucid Air fourdoor luxury sedan. You might have seen the headlines. The flagship Air Dream Performance Edition will deliver a staggering 1,100 horsepower. That’s enough to catapult it from standstill to 60 mph in an eyewatering, heart-palpitating 2.5 seconds. That’s not just supercar fast, it’s hypercar fast. Yet, take the long and winding road to grandma’s house and the battery will give a real-world, EPA-approved, best-in-the-industry range of 520 miles. That’s LA to San Fran on a sin-

gle charge. Range anxiety? What range anxiety? While this highfalutin halo model stickers at $170,500—the initial run of 520 sold out faster than tickets to an Ariana Grande concert—there are plenty more affordable, less acceleratively unnerving versions to choose from. Take, for example, last year’s starter Lucid, the Air Pure, which boasts 480 horses, a still-impressive 406mile range, and a price tag of $78,900. Exploring the OUTBACK

Outback Yachts’ new Outback 50 blends trawler style with cruiser performance—and it comes with a wonderful back deck By Howard Walker Andrew Cilla knows boats. For 40 or so years he headed up Fort Lauderdale–based top yacht brokerage Luke Brown Yachts. And full disclosure here, I came this close to buying a 55-foot Fleming trawler he had listed back in 2011. So, when Cilla decided the time had come to sail off into the sunset, he knew exactly what he wanted in the boat of his dreams. It would need to be in the 50-to-60-foot range. It had to be fast, but not too fast, with a 20-knot top speed. It should have trawler-style lines and be comfortable, economical, and easy to maintain. And it needed to have great outdoor space, with a big back deck for lounging. With the help of acclaimed Sarasota marine architect Michael Peters and John Olson, president of West Coast–based Offshore Yachts, Cilla 42

designed and built his dream yacht, named it the Outback 50, and launched the first example— for himself—at the end of 2019. What did he do once he’d obtained the keys? He cleared his desk at Luke Brown, packed a bag, threw the lines from his slip at the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, and set off on a sixmonth “escape” cruise, all the way up to Northeast Harbor in Maine. Since Cilla’s cruise north, the highly respected Kha Shing Shipyard in Taiwan has built another three Outbacks, each with a base price of around $1,380,000. But what’s with that Outback name? It comes from the yacht’s 16-foot-long shaded rear deck and Cilla’s passion for heading “out back” to the deck for a little R&R. And this is arguably the

yacht’s best feature in what is a multitude of best features. It offers space for a large dining table, a couple of Jet Skis, a small flotilla of kayaks, or a collection of loungers for just kicking back and taking in the view. Cilla’s other key requirement was that the rear deck be open at the stern. While there’s a folding stainless rail across the back for safety, it can be removed to open the cockpit up to the swim platform and the water. Fold back the huge glass doors between the cockpit and saloon, and the largely uninterrupted space flows from the helm station all the way to the stern. Below decks there’s a comfy master cabin in the bow and a twin-bed guest cabin, though only one head and shower, so it will work well for a cruising couple with a kid or two. Up in the salon there’s a nicely equipped galley alongside the helm station, which has its own sliding side door for access to the decks. A small sofa and a mirror-varnished fold-out table are ideal for indoor dining, while a levitating

The interior of the boat is pretty narrow—the yacht’s overall beam is just 15 feet, 6 inches—but that’s how Cilla envisaged the 50, with a slender hull for economical performance and easy marina docking. Climb the cockpit steps up to the flybridge and, again, the space is huge. There’s room for a 10-foot inflatable boat with a crane for raising and lowering. Forward there’s a central helm, with a first-mate seat alongside and an L-shaped

sofa behind. From up here, the 360-degree visibility is outstanding. Standard power comes from a pair of fuelsipping 320-horse Volvo D4s with shaft drive, though the optional 425-hp Cummins, similar to those fitted to Cilla’s 50, are the ones to have, providing 18-to-20-knot cruising and 24 flat out. Throttle back to a lazy 8-knot trawler speed, and the 550-gallon tanks should take you more than 1,000 miles. The Outback 50 is a great looking, thoroughly well-planned, and swift trawler. For the Florida cruising lifestyle, it’s just about perfect. «

Tyler Herro hates false narratives. And the main one that has plagued the 21-year-old Miami Heat guard since his breakout rookie season in 2019 is that he spends more time partying than he does on his game. Social media is partially to blame for that. One picture of him at a Jack Harlow concert and you’d think that all he does is spend his days seeing the rapper perform his song “Tyler Herro.” Forget the hours of practice Herro had put in prior to that concert—and now that he’s a father, the sleepless nights and diaper changes that are all part of early parenthood. Forget that he runs youth basketball camps, has given out backpacks to underprivileged schoolchildren in the Miami area, and showed up with teammates and coaches after the Surfside condominium collapse to hand out food and water to first responders. Some people just seem to fixate on him being a flashy manabout-town. Herro has grown up a lot over the past three years—and quickly too, because the NBA doesn’t care how young you are or how good you were in college. It expects you to play hard and put on a show just like the veterans do. And as Herro enters his third year of play, he’s eager to prove that his first year was no fluke. In the off-season, he gained 10 pounds of muscle and worked with one of the league’s premier trainers in hopes of helping the Heat make another playoff run. “I’m trying to prove myself,” Herro says. “It’s my third year in the NBA and I really want to show people what I can do.” At press time, Herro’s work seems to have paid off. He scored at least 24 points in four of the five preseason games in which he played, and led the league in scoring for that period with 112 points. Granted, it’s not the regular season, but it is a sign of what fans might see from Herro and the Heat.

We have a chip on our shoulders, and we’re trying to prove ourselves. Whether I’m starting or coming off the bench, I want to help this team get to the championship.” For Herro, moments like this are something he dreamed about when he was growing up in suburban Milwaukee. As a third grader, he was focused on playing in the NBA, and stories abound about him as a scrawny little boy who never backed down from a challenge on the court. He grew (as did his legend) and eventually the number of haters determined to see him fail did too. People turned on him when, as a high school player, he opted to play for the University of Kentucky instead of going with a Wisconsin program. He got death threats. People called him a traitor and a snake. Some even threw toy snakes at him as he played. But he played on. “It’s hard for me to understand why people hate Tyler,” says Travis Riesop, his high school coach. “Maybe the way he carries himself makes him seem cocky and that rubs people the wrong way. Maybe it’s because he’s a good-looking guy and people are envious.” The hate seemed to motivate Herro to play even harder and better until he left for his lone year as a Kentucky Wildcat in Lexington, where opposing fans booed him even more. They booed him because there was no denying how good he was—and because he was good, he wound up in the NBA at age 19, playing in Miami, where the expectations are high and the temptations are plentiful for any young person with a newly flush bank account. In that first year, he soared, but in his second, he came down to earth. The fans—his own—turned on him and tweeted at him to hit the gym. Frustrated, Herro sought out super-trainer Drew Hanlen of Pure Sweat Basketball. Among other things, Hanlen worked with Herro on his

jump shot mechanics and on creating more scoring opportunities. Part of that involved tweaks to Herro’s footwork, shiftiness, and pace. So far, Hanlen says he’s seeing good results. “You hear stories about Tyler being Mr. Miami, but the truth is all summer long all he cared about was improving his craft,” Hanlen says. “He would spend hours every day watching film and would come in two hours early just to watch Brad Beal [of the Washington Wizards] work out because he is mimicking some of the things he does. That just shows you the level of humility he has and how much he craves improvement.” Mindset helps. In a preseason game against the Charlotte Hornets, Herro had an off-night, scoring just seven points. But Hanlen says he kept playing hard and finding ways to contribute to the Heat’s 104-103 win. “I don’t think people recognize how much the mental side of the game matters,” Hanlen says. “Building up his confidence was something that will allow Tyler to take a big leap forward. He really worked his ass off to become different, not just look different.” Right now, Herro’s confidence is sky high. In the preseason, he says, once again, that he’s set on being an All-Star—and that he’s determined to do what it takes to get there. “I feel like I’m in the same conversation as the young guys coming up in the league who can be All-Stars, superstars one day…,” he told Bally Sports. “I feel like my name should be in that category too. I put the work in and I’m just continuing to get better every single day.” Twitter erupted as soon as these words came out of Herro’s mouth, with people calling him everything from “drunk” to “not even in the same league” as some of the players he mentioned. But who could fault a young man who single-mindedly pursued his childhood dream, accomplished it, and continues to set the bar higher for himself? Love him or hate him, Tyler Herro keeps pushing himself and those around him. If you’re a Heat fan, you know by now that Tyler Herro talks his talk. But he can back it up. It’s what makes him one of the most exciting players in the league—and it’s a big part of what he hopes will make the Heat a serious contender for this year’s NBA championship. «

hen the international art fair known as Art Basel first arrived in Miami, it had a rough start. Scheduled for

2001, the tragic events of September 11 forced a year

delay. Perhaps some would have thought that beginning to be a

bad omen. But organizers refocused on a 2002 opening, putting two solid years into the planning.

That first Miami edition of Art Basel attracted 160 galleries

from across the globe and 30,000 attendees. It spawned several

satellite fairs, drew attention to local galleries and collectors, and 54

Nearly two decades later, Art Basel has spawned the more broader Art Week, with events and shows spread across the region. Art Week is perhaps Miami’s most significant cultural event, and despite a necessary cancellation last year, it returns

for what organizers hope is the kind of comeback we saw way back when it all began. The lineup can be overwhelming, but we’ve boiled it down to the must-attend fairs and can’t-miss highlights at Art Week 2021.

Art Basel

The single biggest show during Art Week returns with slightly curtailed public participation. Art Basel reportedly adds a halfbillion to the local economy, but perhaps more significantly, it has led to satellite fairs, nighttime events, and shows throughout South Florida. For the main Art Basel event at the Miami Beach Convention Center, the public will gain access December 2-4, while private exhibitions will open November 29 through December 1. Those entering must show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test and wear a mask. For those not ready to return to in-person events, Art Basel will also offer an online viewing room and livestreamed conversations, among other programming, as part of the digital initiative Art Basel Live. The event itself will boast more than 250 participating galleries spread across its sectors, including the return of the Meridians sector featuring large-scale works curated by Magalí Arriola of Museo Tamayo. eghan Leckey’s earliest Christmas memories don’t include palm trees or sandy beaches. Growing up in Chicago, her childhood holidays meant snowy winter weather and large family gatherings. “The houses were fully decorated and my sister and I would sleep at our grandmother’s on Christmas Eve so we could arise early to see our presents,” says Meghan, the owner of Fort Lauderdale’s Shooters Waterfront restaurant and catering company The Grateful Palate Catering & Events. “I loved the food, festivity, and family traditions. They have stayed with me for a lifetime.” Meghan savored her family’s traditional Midwestern Christmas menu of turkey, ham, stuffing, cranberry sauce, green beans, marshmallow surprise—plus apple, pumpkin, and cherry pies. But as she grew up and became a suc-

cessful restaurateur and caterer, she started hiring a chef to enhance the cuisine at her holiday parties. “I love to host Christmas dinners and other parties each year in our Fort Lauderdale home, but I never cook,” she says. “I do the menu and decorate the table and decor, but I leave the cooking to a chef.” Meghan met her husband, Justin Leckey, in Fort Lauderdale while visiting her parents at their winter home in 2004. Now in asset management, Justin was working as a Coast Guard helicopter rescue swimmer in the area at the time. After their marriage in 2008, the couple moved to San Diego for two years before returning to Fort Lauderdale for Justin’s Coast Guard work. “My whole family was in Fort Lauderdale then, and I was so glad to move here,” says Meghan, who shares two children Vivienne, 9, and Preston, 6, with Justin. In 2014, Meghan and her father, William McIntyre, bought Shooters, put money into renovating it, and transformed the Intracoastal icon into an unpretentious yet upscale gathering spot. McIntyre already owned Grateful Palate and asked his daughter to oversee it. Today, the catering arm hosts weddings and other private events. out with holiday parties makes entertaining at home much easier for Meghan. Each Christmas season, she hosts a holiday dinner for 30 friends and neighbors. Guests wear pajamas, a company chef cooks, and they celebrate amid the lovely holiday decor in her spacious open home. Christmas Eve is spent at Meghan’s parent’s Fort Lauderdale home, and Christmas Day find Meghan’s entire family celebrating Santa with the Leckeys. “My family prefers the snow and oldschool Christmas feel of being up north, so we see them at a different time,” says Justin. “And since Meghan and I have a place in Chicago that we visit regularly with the kids, we can also indulge the cold weather fun during different days of the holiday season. We love it all!” For this ivory and gold winter wonderland–themed holiday party, Meghan and Justin invited friends to enjoy a night of food, drink, and festive decor with traditional Christmas music playing in the background. In the elegant living room, a roaring fir was surrounded by a gray and white mosaic tile mantel topped with pinecones, ever-

Justin worked his magic using colorful layers of paper, ribbons, and bows. “This scene reminds me of my mom’s tree,” says Meghan. “Since my mom was a party giver, I learned everything from her!”

In the dining room, the party’s tablescape featured a dazzling centerpiece of all white florals: hydrangeas, spray roses, ranunculus, and phalaenopsis orchids entangled with accents of evergreen and pinecones. Glass candlesticks and gold mercury votive candles with golden manzanita branches cascaded throughout the display. “We wanted a luxurious table done in layers,” says designer Brittany Madon of Floral Britanica. “I used a mirrored base to trick the eye and a variety of different sized candles, both real and mechanical. It is very organic.” Frosted glass gold chargers, Coupe white china with gold rims, Markle crystal stemware with gold rims, Bengaline navy napkins, and brushed-gold flatware define the elegant place settings. Meghan added a menu and place card for each guest. The chef began the dinner with small bites of Nori-dusted Hokkaido scallop, green Thai curry, and sweet soy pearls served in a scallop shell, followed by Bluefin tuna poke with crispy wontons and English cucumber, as well as micro rainbow greens served in a halved coconut shell. The salad included poached pear and beet duo, frissé-radicchio, goat cheese mousse, and toasted pistachios. “This is an end-of-the-year holiday celebration, so I went over the top,” says chef James Cawley, culinary director of Grateful Palate, who served Kistler Chardonnay and Nickel & Nickel Cabernet Sauvignon wines with the multicourse meal. “We wanted to

elevate a traditional classic Christmas dinner and whoop it up.” After the intermezzo of Belvedere blackberry granita, the entree was seared Wagyu filet and seafood-stuffed lobster with whole roasted garlic, baby carrots, heirloom tricolor fingerlings, and roasted brussels sprouts. Dessert was rose tres leches cake, eggnog creme anglaise, gold flakes, wild berries, and micro-mint chocolate chips. An additional treat (displayed beautifully on a separate table at the rear of the dining room) was a mix-and-match masterpiece of holiday sweets, including gingerbread cookies, cranberry orange spice cake, and red velvet cake with creme cheese—all created by pastry chef Monica Palacio. As fully sated guests prepared to leave after a wonderful evening of holiday cheer, attendee Lacey Grabel summed up the best attributes of the hosts: “Meghan and Justin are the most thoughtful, kind, sincere, and easy people who emit love. If you ask chef Christie Tenaud about the inspiration behind her new restaurant, Union Kitchen & Bar in Wilton Manors, she’ll tell you it reflects her and her husband Roberto Colombi’s union—and the marriage of two cultural backgrounds. The couple met in 2013 when Tenaud was hired as the executive chef to open The Blue at the former Boca Raton Resort & Club, and Colombi served as the restaurant’s assistant general manager. “It also speaks to the unique bond that takes place between people when sharing great food and wine,” says Tenaud. Union serves up what Tenaud calls “approachable modern American cuisine” with influences from her native Peru mixed with Colombi’s Italian heritage. In addition, the menu abounds with dishes that hearken back to places the duo has worked and visited. For example, Tenaud’s time in Tucson, Arizona, helped her dream up the must-try crispy pork belly tacos topped with pickled onions and aji verde sauce. Colombi’s hometown in northern Italy inspired several of the homemade pastas, including the porcini campanelle dotted with wild mushrooms, peas, and herbs in a silky truffle cream sauce. The best-kept secret is Union’s grilled pork chop. Unlike memories of unfavorable childhood dinners, this one impresses in size, juiciness, and accompaniments of cherries, plums, fresh herbs, and an arugula salad. Leave room for the light, fluffy ricotta doughnut bites that are best enjoyed when dipped in Nutella or the blackberrymascarpone galette, all served with local honey and house-made buttermilk ice cream. 2 North Atlantic Seamazz lobster tails Butcher’s salt and pepper to taste 2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 4 cubes frozen garlic

2 tsp. lemon juice 1/4 cup Chardonnay 1 oz. unsalted butter, room temperature 2 tbsp. chopped parsley

Using a sharp knife, cut the lobster tails in half lengthwise. Season with salt and pepper. Heat olive oil in a medium-sized pan over medium-high heat. Place lobster tails meat side down and cook for 1 1/2 minutes or until slightly golden. Turn the tails to the other side, add garlic, lemon juice, and wine. Cook for 2 minutes until some liquid evaporates. (It’s recommended to cook shellfish to a minimum internal temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit.) Add butter and parsley and serve.

Indulgent Imbibing Raise a glass to revelry with HIGH-END wines and spirits

The holidays seem to demand indulgence—if not now, when? Looking back on the last year, these are the bottles I would reach for without hesitation.

CHAMPAGNE: The 2018 Cristal from Louis Roederer ($290) is still widely available, and it’s a beauty. It exhibits tropical hints and flavors of lime, vanilla, tart green apple, and red fruits. This Champagne makes an aggressive statement on the palate and can easily be matched with main courses of poultry, veal, or seafood in generous sauces. (louis-roederer.com) If you’re looking for an exercise in hedonism, try the 2007 Cuvée Nicolas François ($175), the luxury cuvée from Champagne BillecartSalmon. The acidity is mouthwatering, the texture is infused with glorious whispers of wild strawberries and red raspberries, and the finish is extraordinarily long. It has been described as intense, energetic, and powerful—all terms that fit this deep and rich Champagne perfectly. (champagne-billecart.fr) CALIFORNIA CABERNET: Denise and Stephen Adams, owners of two Bordeaux estates,

are making remarkable Cabernet Sauvignon on Howell Mountain. While their flagship wine, Adamvs ($350, pronounced “adam-us”) is available in tiny quantities, Quintvs ($200) and Téres ($120) can be purchased on the open market as well as through the winery’s mailing list. These wines are complex and savory, delicious to drink and with no rough edges. California Cabernet doesn’t get much better than this. (adamvs.com) SENSUAL RUM: Ron Abuelo dates to 1908, soon after Don José Varela Blanco arrived in the newly formed Republic of Panama from Spain. At the top of the range is Centuria ($145), a family reserve matured in bourbon barrels with an average age of 30 years. The Ron Abuelo XII Años Two Oaks, Selección Especial ($75) is a blend of rums aged between eight and 40 years; sumptuous on the palate, it has an opulent texture, an intriguing balance between sweetness and spice, and a finish that seems to go on indefinitely. On the entry level, Ron Abuelo makes a 7 Year Reserva Superior ($27) and a 12 Year Gran Reserva ($41), with the latter a significant bargain for a high-quality añejo rum. his craft at Château Lassègue in Saint-Émilion, came to Sonoma and collaborated on Vérité with the late Jess Jackson. Each of the three wines—La Muse (93 percent Merlot), La Joie (84 percent Cabernet Sauvignon), and Le Désir (82 percent Cabernet Franc)—is stunning in itself, with great depth, pinpoint acidity, and appealing freshness. THE BEST OF WASHINGTON STATE: Alex Golitzin, a Russian émigré and the nephew of the legendary André Tchelistcheff, established Quilceda Creek in 1978. Two of their wines are available to the public: the “CVR” Red Wine ($85), a blend of Cabernet from four designated vineyards, and the benchmark Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($200), which is drinkable now or capable of aging gracefully for decades. GEORGIA ON MY MIND: Once you get over the shock of paying $150 for a bottle of California Sauvignon Blanc, Georgia from Lail Vineyards is a memorable experience. Grown on a dry-farmed, three-acre site in Yountville, it is fermented and aged for 18 months in French oak barrels. While the pedigree is California, the style brings to mind Domaine de Chevalier Blanc. (lailvineyards.com) «
