In GIA’s history, very few polished diamonds of gem quality have surpassed the 100-carat mark. Already part of an elite group due to its size, the highly transparent nature of this diamond adds to its rarity. This pure diamond is classified as type IIa which scientifically means it is lacking measurable levels of impurities like nitrogen, thus giving this diamond its pure white color.

This diamond was fashioned into a classic old world cushion cut, with its smaller table and open culet. Its faceting bears resemblance to other world-renowned diamonds, such as the 45.52 carat Blue Hope Diamond and the 105 carat Koh-I-Nur.

BE A LEADER. MAKE A DIFFERENCE. FOR BROWARD. BE BOLD. Larry Feuer wants to be remembered as someone who gave back to his community. He says, “The status quo is unacceptable. We have to BE BOLD to address problems that will happen decades from now.” That’s why Larry is using his estate plan to create an endowed charitable fund at the Community Foundation of Broward. He wants to impact a wide range of causes, including assistance to Broward’s LGBTQ+ community, which the Community Foundation has directly supported for more than 35 years. Thanks to generous donors like Larry, the Foundation has provided over $9 million towards LGBTQ+ issues so far. Larry is proud to have locked in a legacy that makes a difference in the place he calls home. “The Community Foundation of Broward ensures that I’ll be remembered as someone who helped people and created a better Broward for everyone.” Underwriting support generously provided by:

If the recent era of pandemic has taught us anything, it’s this: Nothing is more important than being in good health. That’s why our May/June issue is dedicated to all things wellness—from fitness to food, from skin care to soulfulness. It’s never too late to get active, and for the athletes at this year’s National Senior Games (NSG)—coming to Fort Lauderdale May 10-23—it’s prime time to showcase their athletic skills and score some bling for their efforts. Read “Game On” on page 18 for our Q&A with NSG athlete (and local Lauderdaler) Hubie Kerns Jr., who at age 72 plans to bring the heat in the swimming pool. Staying active at any age or range of abilities is key to a healthy mind and body. So whether you’re looking to get stronger, faster, fitter, more balanced, or more mindful, we’ve got a Fort Lauderdale–friendly regimen for you to try. Check out “FLI Fitness,” beginning on page 40, to meet five of our area’s hottest workout stars. To fuel workouts (or even daily tasks), our bodies need the right vitamins and nutrients. FLI sat down with Dr. Sonali Ruder, an emergency room physician who combines her love of cooking and her knowledge of medicine to produce The Foodie Physician, a website dedicated to helping folks nourish their bodies with meals that heal. Don’t miss her tips and recipes in “Food for Thought” on page 48. Sometimes wellness is in the details. If you’ve ever wondered what routines you really need to follow for optimal skin health, we’ve got answers from the director of spa and recreation at Conrad Fort Lauderdale on page 16. And if you worry about managing the health risks of drinking alcohol—but aren’t ready to eschew a cocktail every now and then—clean eating expert Ivey Leidy shares recipes for sangria and a turmeric-infused margarita, and explains how to support your liver (and even recover from a hangover) on page 22. Here’s to self-care, in all of its forms. Wishing you a season of health!

GET CRAFTY I’ve been known to find my zen in craft projects, but this embroider-your-own luxe clutch kit from Fendi is next-level DIY. Page 25.

24/SEVEN COURTESY OUTFIT TRAINING

By Melissa Puppo

TRY THIS

FIT & FRESH

The inspiration to start OutFit Training began in 2010 when Randy Hetrick, the former Navy SEAL who invented the TRX Suspension Trainer and founded TRX Training, decided to take one of his brand activation initiatives on tour. He customized a super tricked-out Sprinter van and canvassed the country for two years, hosting outdoor group workouts at sporting events, festivals, and new gym openings for key industry partners. Fast-forward 10 years and along came the pandemic, which laid off trainers and locked out gymgoers worldwide. “If there was ever a sign that the time for OutFit had arrived, the global pandemic was it,” says Hetrick. Locals looking to get their sweat on in the great outdoors now have

20 different “training grounds” to choose from in Broward County thanks to Hetrick’s six mobile gyms. Classes vary from Zumba to 16 HIIT-style (high-intensity interval training) functional training workouts to OutFit’s power yoga dubbed “Yoga Under the Sun.” HIIT classes utilize a variety of TRX training equipment (think: kettlebells, strength bands, Rip Trainers) plus a range of calisthenics, agility movements, and stretches. Each 50-minute session includes a warm-up and cool-down. What’s the best part of class? Just ask Hetrick: “There is nothing more inspiring than exercising with a community of other highenergy OutFitters under the blue skies, sunshine, and fresh air of the great outdoors.” (outfittraining.com)

ASK

AN AESTHETICIAN We know we’re supposed to create (and maintain) a skin care regimen. But let’s face it: It’s hard to know what helps and what’s just hype. To get the story straight, FLI caught up with Brian David Douglas, director of spa and recreation at Conrad Fort Lauderdale, for his insight into some of our most pressing questions. (conradfortlauderdale.com) FLI: How often does someone need to get a facial? Douglas: Our skin cells go through a life cycle of four to six weeks, and during a facial, we are treating the outermost layer of skin. If you have normal, healthy skin, a monthly facial is a great boost to your skin care regimen. If you are treating a condition such as acne or dark spots, your aesthetician may suggest a treatment plan that’s more frequent at first then trails off as goals are achieved. Is there any way to reduce the look of bags under the eyes? Absolutely! We’ve all seen the spa images of cucumber slices over the eyes, and it’s not just for show. Cold compresses like cool cucumber slices help to constrict the blood vessels and move out the excess fluid. Topical eye serums with caffeine also do wonders to depuff and help with dark circles. Do jade rollers and gua sha tools really work? Not only do they work, but they are also very relaxing. Your face gets a little lift, and your mood will as well. What should we do if we find a pimple right before a big night out or a key meeting with clients? Start with a face wash with salicylic acid and a charcoal or mud mask to soak up excess oil. Follow that with an overnight drying lotion, which is a must-have spot treatment addition 16

DAYCATION

Ultimate SPOILS

to your medicine cabinet. Is there any way to make pores look smaller? Definitely! Dirt, oil, and buildup from leftover makeup can all make pores appear larger. Cleansing your face twice a day along with using a gentle exfoliant will help unclog the pores. I also use a clay sea mud mask weekly to keep the oil under control. When do you recommend clients get Botox? When the wrinkles make you unhappy. That’s why I got Botox a couple weeks ago! Botox and fillers can do wonders for deep lines and wrinkles, but keep in mind they do nothing for the condition of the skin. You still need an appropriate skin care regimen to keep the skin healthy and bright. Anything else to note? Please, please use sun protection!

Make the most of Mother’s Day with a daycation at Pelican Grand Beach Resort and treat the women in your life to a little R&R. Start the day with a visit to Pure Spa and take in stunning oceanic views atop the rooftop terrace before settling in for a relaxing service or two. A few favorite treatments include the Restoring and Atlantic View Bathing Ritual and the Vitamin C Boosting Facial. Post-glow, make your way down to Ocean 2000 for brunch. Toast Mom with a mimosa and enjoy everything from spicy tuna ahi tacos to blue crab cake Benedict while sitting just steps from the ocean. Indulge further by spending the rest of the afternoon at Laudy’s only lazy river or finding refuge from the sun under umbrellas at the beach. (pelicanbeach.com)

GAME ON

The National Senior Games are coming to Laudy this month (just don’t call it a senior moment) By Kristen Desmond LeFevre The National Senior Games (NSG)—the largest multisport athletic event in the world for seniors—has given athletes over the age of 50 a venue for serious sporting competition since 1987. Held every two years, NSG’s 2022 games will take place in Fort Lauderdale May 10-23. An estimated 13,000 athletes will compete in 22 sports—from archery to volleyball and everything in between—and vie for medals in five-year age divisions from 50 to 100 (and beyond). Below, meet one of the hometown athletes you can cheer on at this year’s games. (nsga.com) Above: The 2022 National senior games (often dubbed the Senior Olympics) will take place in Fort Lauderdale this May. Left: Hubie Kerns Jr. competes in a freestyle swimming event.

l

NAME: Hubie Kerns Jr. AGE: 72 HOMETOWN: Fort Lauderdale A second-generation stuntman who began working in the film industry at age 7, Kerns is now retired (after working on more than 1,000 commercials, 175 films, and 450 TV episodes). But he hasn’t retired from swimming, and he hopes to bring home some new hardware at this year’s NSG. We caught up with Kerns to hear his take on pursuing competitive sports at any age—and taking on the 2022 games in his hometown.

FLI: Why swimming? Kerns: My mom taught me to swim at 9 months old. I was in one of those old newsreels you would see in movie theaters. Swimming paid my way through college with a full scholarship. After college, I quit swimming. When I was 53, I started swimming for exercise; that’s when a U.S. Masters coach spotted me and asked me to compete. I told him my competition days were over, but he was persistent and finally convinced me. I placed at the NSG and had so much fun with everyone that I haven’t stopped since. Tell us about setting goals and overcoming adversity as an athlete. I decided to give myself a three-year plan: First was to place at nationals, then place in the top three for my second year, and the third year 18

was to win nationals. I accomplished all three! My next goal was to set a world record. My time as a 64-year-old was under the world record for the 65-69 age group. I was two weeks away from competing as a 65-year-old when I was hit by a car and my leg was shattered. Eventually I started working out; it felt so good to get back in the water. I wasn’t able to do breaststroke (the event in which I’d hoped to break the world record), but I could do freestyle. I was on crutches until it was time to go to the starting blocks—and a teammate had to help me up on the blocks. I stood on one foot for the start. At the turn, I could only push off with one leg. Still, I ended up swimming the tenth fastest time in world history. Swimming brought me back from a life tragedy. My injury kept me from doing the breaststroke up to world record level, but I ended up breaking

four world records in the individual medley at 70 years old. What do you say to those who say it’s time to hang it up and retire? You’re never too old to stay active! What’s the NSG experience like? NSG brings people from all parts of the country together. You make friends with the competition. You get to see old friends and socialize outside of the meet. I now have good friends [whom] I stay in contact with all over the country. What are you most looking forward to at this year’s NSG events in Fort Lauderdale? Seeing friends and trying to kick their butts. Lots of friendly rivalries!

24/SEVEN THE FLI GUIDE

North Beach Village By Melissa Puppo

Tucked away just steps from the beach lies one of Fort Lauderdale’s most quintessential neighborhoods. North Beach Village (NBV) spans 1.5 miles from Vistamar Street south to Riomar Street, stretching west to the Intracoastal. Anchored by Breakers Avenue, NBV features a collection of mid-century hotels and resorts plus endless options for shopping, relaxing, and grabbing a bite. Whether you plan to visit for a day or a weekend, check out our list of NBV-based must-dos and can’t-misses.

Clockwise from above: The Goodland is NBV’s newest boutique hotel and features an airy, minimalist design and two pools.

CHECK IN There are plenty of high-rises and swanky hotels to choose from, but bask in the splendor of boutique bliss at North Beach Village’s latest property: The Kimpton Goodland Hotel Fort Lauderdale Beach. This chic outpost (only 96 rooms) was once home to The Escape and has since received a modern facelift, with coastal touches and an indoor-outdoor floorplan that creates an airy vibe. Guests looking to cool off can choose from two pools—the relaxing courtyard pool or the rooftop pool, where DJs spin, cocktails are aplenty, and views of downtown and the Intracoastal beckon. Prefer a dip in the ocean? Pick up a beach chair before hitting the sand or a bicycle to explore around town. (goodlandhotelftlauderdale.com)

FUEL UP After soaking in the sunshine, hit up Grateful Juice Bar, which opened in September. Owner Tom McManus says the outpost offers something that was missing in NBV, with a menu focused on organic and fresh offerings— think smoothies, acai bowls, and juices made from scratch, plus bites with a bit more substance like bagels and wraps. “Our place is the best to chill while drinking a smoothie or to sit while using your laptop and enjoying an acai bowl or salmon toast,” says McManus. Even better? Locals are privy to a year-round discount. (gratefuljuice.com) 20

Get your shopping on at The Village Shoppe. Owner Brandi Thostenson originally moved to South Florida to tout her bikini line and settled in NBV, where she opened her shop in 2018. After selling through her own designs, she expanded her offerings to include clothing, accessories, home goods, and gifts from small business owners. “Our shop is very eclectic,” shares Thostenson. “Our brands are sourced from all over the world, and most of our lines are curated by small businesses and designers. We really try to find a lot of one-of-a-kind pieces that people can bring home to their families and friends as gifts and nontraPeruse boho-chic ditional souvenirs.” (instagram. styles inside The Village Shoppe. com/villageshoppenbv)

WINE DOWN One of Fort Lauderdale’s most magical hidden gems happens to be in the heart of NBV. Twinkle lights, lush greenery, and a whole lot of deliciousness in the form of wine and pasta (and more) make Wine + Garden not only date-night-approved but fun for any occasion. This restaurant is nestled next to The Market and is a must when in the area. Pro tip: Make a dinner reservation early because this hot spot fills up fast. (wineandgarden.com)

Wine + Garden’s lush greenery sets the scene for a delicious meal.

START SWEET Don’t leave NBV without stopping by Archibald’s Village Bakery. Opened in 2021, this quaint Anglo-American spot has garnered a massive following among locals and visitors alike. Married partners Justin Mathys-Archibald and Chris Mathys-Archibald are the brains behind the biz, which taps into Chris’ English roots. “People have responded well to the American-style items, but we have a loyal following of British ex-pats who want a flavor of home,” shares Justin, who serves as executive chef. Their top sellers range from the Morning Glory loaf (a breakfast carrot cake packed with fruits and veggies) to blueberry scones, which can’t seem to stay in stock. And be sure to try Justin’s mom’s family recipe cinnamon rolls, which are worth a visit alone. (archibaldsvillage bakery.com)

STRETCH IT OUT Start your day fresh with yoga on the Goodland’s rooftop terrace. Classes for hotel guests start at 8 a.m. during the week and 9 a.m. on weekends. Don’t worry if you didn’t pack a yoga mat; each guest room is equipped with complimentary ones. For those staying off property, check out Yoga on Breakers (at The Market), offering Hatha yoga forcued on awareness, flexibility, strength, and relaxation. (northbeachvillageresort.com/village-yoga)

Enjoy a late-night sip at Botanic inside the Goodland Hotel. Its interiors are contemporary, classy, and provide the perfect backdrop for mingling before heading off to bed. Order the iconic Painkiller cocktail (which arrives in a pineapple-shaped glass) or the hotel’s signature Botanic Tonic with gin, cucumber, and mint. The restaurant is also open throughout the day when cravings hit. (botanicfl.com)

» Hydrate: Alcohol is a

diuretic, leading to fluid and electrolyte loss, so always have a glass of water with your alcoholic drink. Choosing hydrating foods the next day, like watermelon, cucumbers, and potassium-rich items such as bananas and avocados, can help you replenish.

alcohol can inhibit your absorption of certain amino acids (proteins), so re-up with lean proteins like fish and chicken.

A

lcohol has been a part of civilization for thousands of years. The Egyptians brewed beer, the Greeks and Romans were the earliest wine producers, and the Chinese were the first to make spirits, even using alcohol medicinally as a sedative and pain reliever. Throughout history, opinions on the safety of alcohol have ranged from total abstention (think: the

TO SUPPORT » WAYS YOUR LIVER Eat more antioxidant-rich foods: blueberries, beets, broccoli, brussels sprouts, citrus, turmeric, and grapes, for example. Cut out processed foods and refined sugar: The less you give your liver to process, the more effective it can be. Add B vitamins to your diet: Heavy drinking has been shown to cause vitamin deficiencies, so increase your intake of B vitamin–rich foods such as salmon, eggs, avocado, spinach, bananas, broccoli, nutritional yeast, sunflower seeds, lentils, chickpeas, and sweet potatoes.

22

» Anti-inflammatories: I don’t

Prohibition era) to encouraging red wine consumption for heart health. The truth comes down to how the body processes alcohol. Your stomach lining absorbs everything you ingest and directs it into your bloodstream. The liver then breaks down and filters chemicals, drugs, alcohol, and any other toxins before they’re able to roam throughout your body. It does a very good job, but it can only handle so much. Overload it and these toxins are free to roam, affecting other organs as well as the liver itself. Heavy drinking is where the trouble lies. The liver can safely and effectively handle alcohol in moderation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines drinking in moderation as 1 drink per day for women and 2 per day for men. What constitutes a drink? That would be 12 oz. of beer, 5 oz. of wine, 2 oz. of distilled spirits, and 3 oz. of Sherry or Port.

Here are a few other realistic principles to keep in mind: Cut the sugar. This not only lowers your chance of experiencing a hangover, but it also reduces calories. Opt for fresh citrus and club soda or sparkling mineral water instead of sugary juices and sodas. On the same note, stick to clear booze. The darker the spirit, the more congeners—impurities that are created during the aging process—which cause the liver to work harder and are more likely to cause a hangover. Choose gin, vodka, and 100 percent agave tequila to avoid congeners and additives. Finally, be a wine snob. Drier is better, as it’s lower in sugar and additives. Red wines, especially Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet, and rosé, all contain the heart-healthy antioxidant resveratrol. The best dry white wines are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Grigio. Remember that the liver is the most regenerative organ in the body, so it’s never too late to improve its function by drinking less and supporting its health.

Combine all ingredients except club soda in a carafe. Allow to chill in the fridge for 4-6 hours. Serve in a tall wine glass and top with club soda.

BEET Hummus with Cruciferous Crudités

TURMERIC MARGARITA

» INGREDIENTS

INGREDIENTS

1 peeled pineapple

1 beet 1 tbsp. olive oil

4 freshly peeled turmeric roots/fingers

Sprinkle of sea salt

1/2 lime (about 2 tbsp.

2 cups chickpeas

lime juice)

1/2

1/4 orange (1 large

tsp. baking soda

1/4 cup lemon juice (1 large

lemon) 1 minced garlic clove 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 - 1/3

cup tahini

2 tbsp. ice water 1/2 tsp. cumin

»

Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Thoroughly wash and dry the beet. Using a parchment-lined baking sheet, drizzle beet with olive oil, sprinkle with salt, and bake for 1 hour. Rinse and strain chickpeas. Using a saucepan, add chickpeas, baking soda, and enough

»

orange wedge) water to cover by 2 inches. Boil for 20 minutes. While your chickpeas are boiling, add your lemon juice, minced garlic, and salt to a blender or food processor and let it sit while the chickpeas boil. This neutralizes the garlic a bit. When the chickpeas are done, rinse, strain again, and set aside Add tahini to the blender and pulse a few times. This is the most crucial step for getting super creamy hummus: While running your blender with your lemon, garlic, tahini, and salt, slowly add in your ice water.

»

2 oz. blanco tequila

»

The texture should be thick and creamy. If it’s too thick, add a little more ice water. Once the beet has cooled, remove skin and cut into cubes. Add chickpeas and the beet to your blender and blend until thick and creamy. Serve with cruciferous crudités such as broccoli, orange cauliflower, watermelon radishes, carrots, and cucumbers.

»

Using a juicer, juice the pineapple (including the core) and the turmeric. This can also be done in a blender and strained through a mesh sieve. This will yield about 2 cups pineapple turmeric juice.

»

Using a cocktail shaker, squeeze the lime and orange wedge and discard rinds. Add tequila to the shaker and fill 3/4 full with ice. Shake and strain over an ice-filled glass. Add 4 oz. of pineapple turmeric juice to the glass. You can also top with a splash of club soda, if desired.

Clockwise from above: A Sky Cabin, the Via Ferrata climbing course, and property overview, all at Castle Hot Springs.

CASTLE HOT SPRINGS Arizona’s first wellness resort (established 1896) returns in fabulous new form on the grounds of the original, anchored by extraordinary natural assets and rooted in the type of mindful and high-end experiences today’s travelers crave. Say hello to the new Castle Hot Springs, an oasis of 34 sleek cabins and bungalows strewn across 1,110 acres in the Bradshaw Mountains (an hour north of Phoenix) and centered around a series of thermal hot springs etched into cacti-cloaked splendor. The wellness-driven retreat is an idyllic duet of relaxation and adventure, the former underscored by long soaks in the cascading, mineral-rich springs, which Native Americans have used for millennia to alleviate aches and revitalize the skin. The adventure aspect comes in the form of a Via Ferrata cable climbing course. Over multiple hours, you’ll scale the mountainous terrain,

an adrenaline-packed affair of frightening foot-wedging, suspension-bridge-crossing, “don’t look down” moments, and, ultimately, great accomplishment. Between these two extremes are desert hikes, horseback riding, guided archery, pickleball, yoga, meditation, soul-enriching spa treatments, and more. Books and telescopes offer in-room entertainment, with the likes of televisions and Bluetooth speakers intentionally absent to promote digital detox. Days are structured around three memorable meals, featuring just-harvested ingredients from the on-site organic farm and greenhouse where 500-plus varieties of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and florals prosper. Dining and most activities are bundled into the Castle Hot Springs’ rates, meaning there’s no reason to leave the property and every reason to simply—and completely—leave the outside world behind. RIGGS WASHINGTON DC

The former “Bank of Presidents” is reinvented as a hotel whose currency is design By Daphne Nikolopoulos

T

hink “bank” and a few images come to mind: vaults, coffered ceilings, teller cages, and acres of dark wood. It’s the design aesthetic of old money, and it’s given even more gravitas when the clients are U.S. presidents. Such is the history of the Riggs Washington DC hotel (riggsdc.com), housed in the 1891 landmarked building that was once home to the capitol’s Riggs National Bank, which handled the finances of 23 presidents. This illustrious heritage did not go unnoted by Lore Group creative director Jacu Strauss, who helmed the property’s reimagining. Strauss preserved many of the original features of the Richardsonian Romanesque Revival building—one of few remaining in the city—including the iconic barrelvaulted lobby and coffered ceilings. Nods to the building’s past life are everywhere: a reception area recalls a teller window; decorative safes house minibars and, well, safes; and a giant medallion of the Goddess of Money looms in the lobby. One can even strike cocktail gold in the original bank vault, now transformed into subterranean bar Silver Lyan (silverlyan.com), undoubtedly one of Riggs’ high points. Mr Lyan (real name Ryan Chetiyawardana), of White Lyan and Dandelyan in London, has to be one of the most creative mixologists on the planet. Mr Lyan interprets a place’s history and culture into concoctions that have to be sipped to be believed. An example: While you wait for your Ceres Joker, the server brings you a

masked-bear figurine holding a helium balloon. The bear sways creepily until the Macallan- and sloe gin– based cocktail arrives. The server sets the string alight and the balloon detonates, releasing the scent of gunpowder into the drink. There are less dramatic ways to deliver a smoky cocktail, but where’s the fun in that? Riggs’ 181 guest rooms are modern interpretations of the early-twentieth-century style that informed the original building. The suites are inspired by first ladies, an inspiration that came to Strauss following a private tour of the White House. “I chose four lesserknown first ladies, but each had strong minds with regards to the atmosphere and culture they wanted to create in the White House,” he says. “I tapped into these legacies in an abstract way, to avoid creating a museum-like interior.” Like all interiors, it’s the small details that, when taken together, make a big statement. For instance, Strauss created “trophy cabinets” in Silver Lyan, displaying trophies women have received for such quirky things as a tractor-driving competition. He reiterated the building’s heritage through framed checks from Riggs National Bank (some more than 120 years old), which he’d collected over the years and installed on the wall behind the reception desk. “Riggs came with a rich history from its time as a bank during the golden ages and the architectural expression that came with it,” Strauss says. “I wanted to contrast this with aspects that were more playful [and] surprising moments throughout the hotel.” «

The Adventures of TINTIN

This 112-foot Westport superyacht is ready to take you to places far and wide By Howard Walker

T

here was no more enthusiastic a globe-trotter than the inquisitive, ginger-quaffed mystery-solver named Tintin. Created by Belgian cartoonist Hergé in 1929, Tintin traveled the world looking for adventure with his trusty canine sidekick, Snowy. Tintin and his joie de vivre no doubt inspired the owners of this gorgeous 112-foot, American-built Westport to name their new yacht after the lovable character. Since launching late last year, the mini-superyacht’s adventurous spirit was put to the test when it cruised from Westport’s yard in Port Angeles, Washington, through the Panama Canal, ending in Palm Beach just in time to shine at this year’s Palm Beach International Boat Show. Now, after a sudden change of plans, this dreamy luxury cruiser is 38

on the market with top brokers Fraser Yachts for $17.5 million. Part of its considerable appeal is the fact that the lucky buyer will be getting a virtually brand-new yacht with all the bugs sorted out and without the typical two-year wait. Tintin—pronounced “tan-tan” for all you Francophiles—is the latest in Westport’s popular W 112 series. Since the 112 was introduced in 1994, 65 have been built, making it arguably the most successful superyacht ever. Of all the 112s out there, Tintin boasts the coolest, sexiest, craziest interior of them all. It is part floating South Beach boutique hotel, part gift shop at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. The snowy-white walls are broken up by splashes of vibrant color, textured finishes, and whimsical decorations. The salon has huge windows and bleachedblond wood flooring, as well as a glass and chrome dining table surrounded by see-through acrylic chairs. This space boasts some great art too, including a waist-high, multicolored Great Dane sculpture and a near floor-to-ceiling Pop Art painting of screen siren Lauren Bacall. Westport’s in-house design team went crazy with Lumicor, the

turquoise acrylic resin that looks like the waters off the Exumas. The stunning kitchen countertop, the flybridge bar and tabletop, and the outdoor table in the cockpit are all the color of the sea and a perfect match to Tintin’s waterline hull stripe. Another unique design highlight is that terrific top-deck hardtop flybridge, with clear eisenglass panels that can be opened or closed. Three steps out and down from the flybridge take you to the shaded back deck, which features a Jacuzzi, a lounger, and even a grassy area for that extra feeling of home Snowy would adore. When friends and family come to stay, Tintin has four big staterooms, one of which is currently set up as a gym. The full-beam master suite continues the POWER FILE whimsical theme with its porthole-inspired PRICE: $17.5 MILLION doors and a hand-painted sky-and-puffyLENGTH: 112 FEET BEAM: clouds ceiling. Part of the Westport 112’s proven sea-keeping ability comes down to its wave-cleaving hull and tough fiberglass-composite construction. Speaking of the hull, the design changes that came with the latest W series saw the previous tiny porthole-like windows replaced with swaths of tinted glass that fill the superstructure. It’s hard to imagine a more perfect yacht for family fun. We think Hergé’s Tintin would approve of his nautical namesake. «

CARLOS ALONSO, SQUAT DOCTOR

Bachelor parties aren’t usually where the best ideas originate. But, it was during one of those guys’ trips five years ago when Carlos Alonso’s brand was born. “A buddy of mine called me ‘Squat Doctor,’ and it just stuck right away,” Alonso says of the moniker he uses for his workout program. Before becoming a personal trainer, Alonso spent seven years playing minor league baseball for the Philadelphia Phillies organization. But after a career-ending injury, he started looking for what was next and decided to move to South Florida where his brother, Kiko Alonso, was playing football for the Miami Dolphins. Now, as Fort Lauderdale’s one-and-only Squat Doctor, Alonso trains his clients online and in his backyard, where he’s built a $25,000 poolside gym with all of the equipment you need to target your glutes. (squatdoctor.com)

FLI: What's the best way to get stronger? Alonso: With a combination of building strength movements in an aerobic and anaerobic sense. I’m trying to first see if we can build up the muscle with weights—just overall capacity to lift a certain amount of weight—and then also increasing repetitions or increasing sets. Then I like to build up to muscle fatigue. So, I train the muscle with overall strength, I train with volume, and then also to muscle failure. What does your post-workout recovery look like? I work out five days a week, sometimes twice in a day, but I do take recovery very seriously. First and foremost, I try to get eight hours of sleep. I hydrate, I eat a sufficient amount of calories for my output

of the day, and I also do a few extra things like saunas and cold water therapy. beyond strength-building, what's something everyone should do to enhance their health? Start spending more time outside. Maybe do an outdoor workout, or even go for a walk, or just be outside in nature away from phones and electronics for a little bit. There’s something about that I find very peaceful lately; it’s almost like a meditative practice. any vices you avoid or habits people should consider cutting back on? Stop overdoing the caffeine. Some people process caffeine better than others, but for me personally, [on] many mornings it was the first thing I was putting in my body and yes, it woke me up, but it just ramped up my stress levels. I didn’t know how to slow my heart rate down.

FLI: How do you respond to people’s excuses for not committing to a fitness routine? Maitland: Don’t overthink it and make sure whatever you’re doing you actually like it—even if it’s just going for a walk outside with a weighted vest on. It doesn’t always have to be in a gym. The world is my gym sometimes.

Scan the QR code with your smart phone to watch Maitland in action.

Your program combines exercise and nutrition. Can you do one without the other? Exercise is king and nutrition is queen—you put them together and you have a kingdom. It just makes sense. If your food’s not right and what you feed yourself isn’t good, you’re not even going to be able to pick up a weight. Everything you eat affects the chemistry of your body.

LEANER: JAMIE MAITLAND, THE OFFICE 954

Jamie Maitland spent her childhood going to her parents’ office on NE 27th Avenue. In 2019, she had the opportunity to transform the space into a fitness studio—aptly named The Office 954—where she and her team of trainers teach everything from HIIT to spin to boxing. Maitland offers a personal training experience at an affordable price, with maximum class sizes topping out at just 12 spots. A certified nutritionist, Maitland also leads a 21-day reset challenge, joining members in a total overhaul of their diets—eliminating everything from processed sugars to dairy products. This past year, she even launched a health food company that includes a collagen protein shake mix made with Maitland-approved ingredients. (theoffice954.com) 42

Sometimes it’s best to start with something simple. Any advice for people who want an easy way to reset their health? Start drinking more water. You’re a plant—you need to water yourself. And I know it sounds cliché to say, but it truly flushes every single thing out of your body. Nobody likes deprivation, but what’s something we should all stop doing right now? Stop eating sugar. Sugar is a complete anti-nutrient and it quite literally has zero health benefits. Maybe you don’t think you have a sweet tooth, but are you eating ketchup? Do you eat a lot of hot sauce? Go look at the back label and tell me how much sugar is in it. Even if you’re not the cookie monster, you might be the condiment monster, and you don’t even realize how much sugar you’re eating. Jamie Maitland gets down to business at her gym, The Office 954.

ADRIANE ABRAHAM, ROAR STATION

At the start of the pandemic, Adriane Abraham wasn’t sure how she was going to pay rent for her fitness studio in Flagler Village. Making a quick effort to pivot, she ended her lease, rented out all of the gym equipment to her members, and started teaching online. Today, it’s hard to imagine Abraham—founder of the Roar Station—ever hit that bump in the road. Since reopening on NE 8th Avenue, her highintensity interval training studio is thriving once again, with more than 300 members and an all-female team of 13 coaches who lead group strength and conditioning classes. (roarstation.com)

FLI: How do you respond to people’s excuses for not committing to a fitness routine, like: “I’m too busy,” “I’m too tired,” or “I’m too old”? Abraham: I always ask, “Are you a priority in your own life?” If you’re constantly pushing yourself to the back of the line, rather than keeping yourself in the front, then you’re never going to feel the

way you want to feel or look the way you want to look. It has to be ingrained in your life. It’s not what you do—it’s who you are.

If you can’t make it to the gym because you’re traveling or have limited time, what are some workouts you can do every single day no matter what? I always bring a mini band, a jump rope, and a resistance tube on vacation. They’re literally the most easily packable items. You can work out a lot of the lower body with a mini band above the knees— squats, fire hydrants, clamshells, jump squats, bridges. You can use the jump rope for conditioning, and then with the resistance tube you can do chest presses and banded curls. How do you personally recover after a workout? I always add mobility at the end of every workout. Mobility is crucial to being able to maintain your body so that you can continue to train, so I always do four to six exercises Scan the QR code with static holds that I incorporate after every with your smart single training session. phone to watch Abraham in action. I’m also a very avid massage goer. I have a membership at The Now and I go twice a month, and I go to the chiropractor just to get my monthly adjustment. I also do active recovery days and then one complete rest day. You shouldn’t be training seven days a week, so I do an active recovery, like a 30 minute jog or walk one day, and the next day I’m going to get a massage, stretching out, and just letting my body really rest.

YOGA IS FOR EVERYBODY AT ANY AGE OR ANY LEVEL. YOU JUST HAVE TO UNDERSTAND WHERE YOUR STARTING POINT IS AND DON'T JUDGE IT.”

BALANCED: JIMMY BARKAN, THE BARKAN METHOD OF HOT YOGA

44

Jimmy Barkan has been practicing yoga for more than 40 years. In 1980, he had just moved to Los Angeles and was working a bartending job at the airport when he first took a class with Bikram Choudhury. For two years, he took three to four classes every day and earned his certification from Ghosh’s Yoga College. Barkan became Bikram’s right-hand man, often teaching his LA classes while Bikram traveled to India. In 1983, Barkan opened

his own studio in Fort Lauderdale “when nobody did yoga, let alone hot yoga,” he says. Today, he instills his own Barkan Method—an evolved version of Bikram and Vinyasa—to the next generation of yoga teachers during training trips to destinations like Iceland, Australia, and right here in South Florida. He’s also recorded more than 300 classes that are available online to his stable of monthly subscribers. (barkanmethod.com)

FLI: How do you counter the classic excuses of “I’m too busy,” “I’m too tired,” or “I’m too old” to encourage people to start practicing yoga? Barkan: The biggest thing is they usually have a performance standard in their mind, and if they’re not as good as somebody in the front row, they may feel intimidated. Yoga is for everybody at any age or any level. You just have to understand where your starting point is and don’t judge it. How do you advise students to stay in meditation when it feels like a challenge? Don’t think you have to sit there for an hour or half an hour. It’s too much. Your ego is going to talk you out of it. Just do five minutes, do three minutes, do a couple breaths, and then build

from there so you give yourself a tangible goal. How do you motivate yourself to move on the days when you don’t Scan the QR code with your smart feel like doing phone to watch yoga? Barkan in action. Make the decision once, and don’t make the decision ever again. Because you will talk yourself out of it everyday if you’re lying in bed, thinking, “Do I want to go to yoga today? I’m a little too tired.” You’re going to make the commitment to, say, four times a week, which should be the minimum. Five is great. Six is ideal. I’m not a proponent of seven. I like taking one day off. MAY/JUNE 2022

MIMI GHANDOUR OF MIMI YOGA

MINDFUL:

When Saje Nicole first started modeling, she did everything she could to be a size zero. “I knew how many calories were in everything—a cracker, an apple, a piece of steak,” she says. As she got older, Nicole decided to start using fitness to get the body she wanted, not what she thought the industry wanted. By embracing her curves, she ended up signing with bigger agencies and working with more impressive brands. Then, in 2021, Sports Illustrated featured Nicole in its annual swimsuit issue. “It was wild. I remember thinking, ‘Is this actually happening?’ It was one of the best days of my life.” Before the shoot, she had 30 days to prepare, which is the same amount of time it takes to complete the online fitness program she launched shortly after called The BluPrnt. During the monthlong commitment, Nicole’s protocol includes a mix of meditations, journaling prompts, workouts, and nutrition guides. (thebluprnt.com)

STOP COMPARING YOURSELF. STOP JUDGING YOURSELF. JUST LEARN HOW TO BE PATIENT AND LOVING WITH YOURSELF.”

5

FLI: If you can’t make it to the gym because you’re traveling or have limited time, what are some workouts you can do every single day no matter what? Nicole: I love outdoor cardio. No matter what your goals are, having a good treadmill or a place where you can just run and exercise your heart is so important. Even if I have resistance bands, even if I have weights, I run every single day.

How do you work on mindset when helping your clients be more active? We identify how you look at working out. Let’s say when you were younger you had to do physical therapy all the time and you hated it, or people made fun of you, or you don’t like the way you look. Whatever it is, I’m going to help you to identify why you don’t like working out and help you to restructure that.

Saje Nicole, founder of The BluPrnt, works out on Fort Lauderdale Beach.

What’s something we should all start doing for our health? Start taking time to pay attention to your habits. Sometimes we just wake up, start working, you have kids—there’s just so much going on that we don’t just take time to say, “How does my body feel?”

What’s something we should all stop doing to improve our overall wellness? Stop comparing yourself to other people. I like to be pretty transparent as far as what I eat and what I do, but there are so many fitness influencers and people out there who are not as transparent and they’ll make everything seem perfect and like they wake up like this. And it will mess with you. Stop comparing yourself. Stop judging yourself. Just learn how to be patient and loving with yourself. « STEVEN MARTINE

FOR THOUGHT

Dr. Sonali Ruder—Fort Lauderdale’s Foodie Physician—is turning meals into medicine BY CHRISTIE GALEANO-DEMOTT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PETER FONTANA 48

s a child, Sonali Ruder would sit in the kitchen of her home and watch her parents fill and fold samosas or prepare chicken biryani—her father tending to the chicken, her mother fussing over the rice. It was a ritual that punctuated their busy schedules as doctors. It’s no surprise then, that Ruder has followed in their footsteps, both as a doctor and as a cook. At first, Ruder rebelled against the notion. But since she excelled in her math and science classes at Brown University, her path to medicine soon revealed itself. During her residency in emergency medicine in New York, Ruder started to cook as a way to de-stress; tasks such as chopping vegetables, she found, relaxed her. After finishing her medical training, she took a unique path—enrolling in the Institute of Culinary Education to cultivate her newfound passion. She started a blog, The Foodie Physician, to keep her family and friends up-todate with the new recipes, techniques, and dishes she was learning. “I’ve always loved writing, so I think that’s why I ended up cooking because it lets me express my creative side,” she says. As a board-certified emergency room doctor with Broward Health Coral Springs, Ruder was seeing tragic heart attacks, strokes, kidney failures, and countless other ailments on a daily basis—and it frustrated her. She wanted to use her knowledge of nutrition to prevent these types of medical events, rather than treat them after they’d already wreaked havoc on a patient’s body. STARTING

WE ASKED RUDER HOW READERS CAN GET A JUMP START ON EATING HEALTHY. HERE ARE HER TRIED-AND-TRUE TIPS FOR ESTABLISHING NEW HABITS. Cook your own food. Restaurant food and takeout has a lot of hidden sodium, fat, and sugar. When you cook at home, you know exactly what you’re cooking and what ingredients you’re putting in, and you can control the cooking techniques you’re using. Cut back on sugar. Most people get an extra 300 calories a day from added sugar, and most of that is from drinks. Replace sugary drinks like sodas and sports drinks with water. I like sodas but I know they’re not good for me, so I drink a lot of sparkling water and add a little bit of juice. It makes me feel like I’m having a fun drink with the fizziness of a soda, but it’s a lot better for you. Avoid buying instant oatmeal and yogurt that already has fruit or candy in it. Just buy plain, then sweeten it yourself at home with berries.

Beyond Burger holiday farro bowl

That’s when she evolved The Foodie Physician from a personal blog into a health and wellness website. Now Ruder is able to share her medical and culinary tips for getting and staying healthy with a much larger audience. These days it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction online—especially with regard to medical claims. But Ruder prides herself on only posting health and nutrition articles she’s written and vetted herself, as well as sharing recipes she’s personally developed. And the accompanying photos that make you ravenous are shot by Peter Fontana, her husband and the other half of The Foodie Physician. (While Ruder’s passion is cooking, her husband’s is photography.) Fans can also peruse her cookbooks on the site. After Ruder won a handful of cooking contests while in culinary school, Hatherleigh Press approached her with the idea of 50

Plan out your meals. A lot of times we make unhealthy choices when we don’t plan ahead. We don’t know what we’re going to eat so we pick up fast food or order takeout. Take 30 minutes on the weekend to plan out your meals for the week. Then make one trip to the grocery store to get all your groceries. It’ll save you time and money, and you’ll eat a lot better. Make enough for two days. If you know you’re going to be busy or working late, make leftovers work for you.

becoming a cookbook author. Since then she’s penned four titles, including The Greek Yogurt Diet and Natural Baby Food. Her newest entry, The Foodie Physician Cookbook, which was released in December, is a collection of more than 70 of her best recipes—with Ruder’s expert healthy eating tips sprinkled throughout. “My goal is to give people the confidence and the tools to take control of their health, starting at the kitchen,” she says. “I want to show people that cooking is not hard and it’s not intimating. You can prepare healthy food at home that’s delicious.” (thefoodie physician.com) «

Use your freezer. In my house, it’s chaos in the morning! We know we’re supposed to eat a healthy breakfast but no one has time. So I make a dozen breakfast burritos and freeze them. Then when I’m short on time, I can heat them up in the microwave and go. Let the grocery store help you. Buy pre-cut vegetables. I love butternut squash but who wants to peel and cut an entire squash? You can find it pre-cut in the produce or freezer section. Invest in an air fryer. These mini convection ovens use minimal oil, heat up quickly, and cook your food much faster. I recently did baked sweet potato, which gets a nice crispy skin on the outside and is super moist on the inside.

SAVE GREEN, EAT HEALTHY

Healthier food doesn’t have to mean higher grocery bills. Ruder offers ideas for keeping your food budget on track. Organic vs. nonorganic. Organic food is going to be more expensive, so pick and choose what you’re going to eat organic. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) compiles the Dirty Dozen list every year that catalogues the most heavily contaminated fruits and vegetables. Find it at ewg.org/foodnews. Choose to eat organic for the items on the list and go regular for everything else. Even if you’re eating nonorganic, you’re still getting so much benefit from eating fruits and vegetables. And there are plenty of healthy foods that are not expensive, like beans and legumes. Buy in season. Look for produce that’s in season as it’ll be cheaper. Shop in the freezer section. Frozen fruits and vegetables are picked at their peak and they retain their nutritional value, making them a great affordable option. Buy in bulk. If you buy large family packs of salmon or chicken, portion them out into individual freezer bags, label with a date, and freeze them. Don’t trash produce. If you have vegetables that are starting to go bad, throw them into a pot and make a vegetable or chicken stock and freeze it.

Cilantro lime chicken skewers with wild blueberry salsa

KEEPING IT fresh RUDER KNOWS IT CAN BE A STRUGGLE TO KEEP FOOD FRESH BETWEEN SHOPPING AND COOKING. TRY THESE TIPS FOR AVOIDING FOOD WASTE AND HAVING INGREDIENTS AT THE READY.

Don’t wash. Berries can get moldy if you wash them right when you get home from the grocery store. Just wash them right before eating instead.

Freeze it. You can freeze most things for up to three months. So if you don’t think you’re going to use it within the next few days just stick it in the freezer.

FIFO. The “first in first out” principle may be basic, but sometimes we forget. When you buy a new container of milk don’t stick it in front of the milk that’s already there. Put it behind it so you can use the one that’s going to expire first. This helps prevent spoilage.

KID-FRIENDLY FARE

Want to get your kids in on the fresh food act? Ruder has ideas for getting them to ditch the nuggets and embrace healthier options. Get them in the kitchen. When kids cook with you they are so much more likely to eat the food because they’re proud of what they made.

Strawberry oatmeal blender pancakes

FOOD AS medicine

Tackle weird ingredients. If there’s an ingredient they’re not used to, incorporate it into a dish that they’re familiar with. Instead of a piece of salmon, make a salmon burger. Kids love things on sticks, so I do rainbow fruit kebobs. They also love dipping things, so I make homemade chicken strips with three dipping sauces so they can have fun dipping.

Southwest blueberry Cobb salad

WHICH INGREDIENTS CAN TARGET OUR ILLS AND BOOST OUR BODIES? CHECK OUT RUDER’S THOUGHTS ON WHAT TO EAT AND WHY. Eat the rainbow. You should eat all the colors because different colored fruits and vegetables are richer in different nutrients. Orange foods, like butternut squash and mango, are high in beta-carotene. Green items, like cruciferous vegetables, are high in phytonutrients that have cancer-fighting properties. Boost your brain with omega-3 fatty acids. The USDA’s guideline for seafood has been to eat at least two servings per week, but it just released an updated guideline to include babies (6 months and older) because omega-3s play such an important role in brain development. Berries have high levels of polyphenols that also support brain health. Lower your blood pressure with the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet. Watch your sodium intake, eat lots of fruits and vegetables that are rich in fiber, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, and limit saturated fats (found in meat and dairy products) by replacing them with heart52

healthy unsaturated fats (from avocados, olive oil, and nuts). Cutting out butter and cooking with olive oil makes a difference. Get your gut healthy with probiotics and prebiotics. You want to have a healthy balance in your gut microbiome for digestive health because 70 to 80 percent of your immune system lives in your intestines. Probiotics are good bacteria that live in your gut, and prebiotics are the foods that they eat. You can get probiotics through Greek yogurt and fermented foods like miso and kombucha. Prebiotics feed the good bacteria and can be found in items rich in fiber like oatmeal, onion, garlic, and bananas. Lower inflammation. Eat whole foods, meaning unprocessed foods that are as close to their natural state as possible. Also eliminate added sugar.

Let your skin glow with hydration. Drink water and eat fruits and vegetables that also have water, like any type of melon. And don’t forget sunscreen. Keep your eyes healthy with beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids, copper, and zinc. These nutrients can reduce age-related eye decline by 25 percent. Find them in foods like fish, seeds (flax, chia), nuts, legumes, leafy vegetables (kale, spinach, collards), carrots, sweet potatoes, citrus fruits, and eggs.

INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS

2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil

1/4 tsp. pepper

2 shallots (or 1 small onion), finely chopped

1 lb. large or extra-large shrimp, peeled and deveined

3 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 tsp. dried oregano

3 oz. feta cheese, crumbled (about 3/4 cup)

1/8 to 1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes

2 tbsp. minced fresh parsley

1 can (28 oz.) diced tomatoes 1/4 cup white wine 1/2 tsp. salt

Turn the broiler on high. In a large ovensafe skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add shallots and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened. Add the garlic, oregano, and red pepper flakes and cook for 1 more minute until fragrant. Stir in the tomatoes (along with the liquid from the can), wine, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil then reduce heat to a simmer. Simmer uncovered for 8-10 minutes or until sauce is thickened.

Add the shrimp to the skillet. Cook for 5-6 minutes until the shrimp turns pink, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and sprinkle with crumbled feta cheese. Place the skillet under the broiler for 2-3 minutes until feta melts and is golden brown in spots. Alternatively, you can cover the skillet with a lid and let the cheese melt. Sprinkle parsley over the dish. Serve with crusty bread on the side for dipping.

ABOUT THE LIST Medical decisions are some of the most important choices our readers make. In an effort to provide the best medical information available, Fort Lauderdale Illustrated has enlisted a professional marketing company, Professional Research Services of Troy, Michigan, to identify the Top Doctors in Broward County. Together we surveyed licensed physicians, asking them to reveal the best medical professionals in our area. These Top Doctors have been scrutinized for the legitimacy of their licenses as well as their status with the Florida Department of Health. While there are outstanding professionals who aren’t listed here, we hope you’ll give these doctors special consideration when choosing a medical professional.

TIFFANY SIZEMORE DI PIETRO, DO, FACC, FACOI A physician who does almost everything… except house calls

To say that Tiffany Sizemore Di Pietro, DO, FACC, FACOI, is accomplished is an understatement.

After graduating Magna Cum

Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Psychobiology from Florida Atlantic University at age 19, the Florida native became the youngest graduate from the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Nova Southeastern University, garnering quadruple board certifications in cardiology, internal medicine, nuclear cardiology, and echocardiography. Her résumé is a laundry list of achievements. Still, the mechanics of being a doctor can be challenging, Di Pietro says. “Doctors and healthcare in general are faced with the mentality to see as many patients and treat as many diseases as possible,” she notes, explaining the factors that informed her decision to move away from internal medicine and focus on cardiology. “With very few women cardiologists in U.S., I wanted to offer a different perspective,” she says. She now owns a private concierge practice—a model of healthcare that involves providing services to patients in exchange for an upfront fee. “I felt the need to spend more time with each patient and concentrate on prevention, rather than treating the disease,” Di Pietro says. “While it’s always great to fix things, my goal is to drill down risks so we can head off heart attacks and strokes before they happen.” Along with easy and immediate access to physicians (her patients have her cell phone number) and same-day appointments (which can reduce or eliminate costly visits to the ER and urgent care centers), Di Pietro offers easy access to routine screenings like mammograms, blood work, and colonoscopies that patients might otherwise avoid. While concierge medicine has traditionally been seen as a tool of the wealthy, Di Pietro says its affordability and popularity are on the rise. “Since the pandemic, it has grown 30 percent,” she says. Di Pietro also serves as a physician adviser to Di Pietro Partners, her husband David’s medical malpractice firm. As an expert witness in a jury trials, depositions, and mediations, Di Pietro offers her unique knowledge to help resolve issues like wrong site surgeries, post-op infections, and misdiagnoses. As with medicine, work-life balance is MEMORIAL HEALTHCARE SYSTEM

important to her. “Some days are tough,” Di Pietro says. “But as long as

I get a hug and a thank you from a patient, I am good.” —Sandra Gurvis

RICARDO R. REYES, MD

A lifeline to underserved and infectious disease patients In 1983, when Ricardo Reyes returned to his native Panama after finishing his infectious diseases (ID) fellowship at the University of Kentucky, his plan was to build a life and career in Panama City. “With its many tropical diseases, Panama is an ideal country for my specialty,” Reyes notes. Although he began working with malaria and Leishmaniasis, by the mid-1980s, AIDS had roared to the forefront of medicine. “Nobody knew how to treat it or even how it was transmitted,” Reyes says. “People were putting food trays outside of patients’ doors, fearing that they would get infected.” Fate also intervened in the form of notorious military leader Manuel Noriega. Reyes recalls “a terrifying situation,” with Panama in turmoil. In 1989, he was offered the position of director of the Special Immunology Clinic at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. So he and his family uprooted themselves and made Miami their new permanent home. After leaving Jackson in 1991, Reyes worked for Cleveland Clinic of Florida, helping to found the Cleveland Clinic Foundation’s travel clinic. He was hired by Fort Lauderdale’s Holy Cross Medical Group in 2000, establishing a private practice five years later. Deeply involved in the medical community, he maintains privileges at hospitals around Fort Lauderdale, and serves as the ID program coordinator at Holy Cross Hospital/UM residency program. Perhaps Reyes’ most rewarding career move came in 2010 when he was named medical director for Light of the World Clinic—a free medical facility in Oakland Park dedicated to underserved patients in Broward County. As a physician volunteer, Reyes visited the clinic’s founder, Dr. Erwin Vasquez, who had been ill with cancer. “He made me promise to take it over after he was gone,” Reyes says. Vasquez died the next day; Vasquez’s wife was present for their conversation, so Reyes was on the hook. “She reminded me not to forget what I had said,” he recalls. Serving on the front lines of infectious diseases has been tough, especially during COVID-19. With treatment protocols and vaccines in place by the summer of 2021, “it looked like things were getting better,” he says. “Then the Delta variant hit and hospitals immediately became overwhelmed with patients on ventilators and other life support. It was heartbreaking,” Reyes recalls. “Families could not be present to say goodbye.” Nevertheless, he says the ride has been worth it. “It’s extremely rewarding to put a smile MEMORIAL HEALTHCARE SYSTEM

on someone’s face, contribute to their health, and provide them with

PHYSICIAN PROFILES_FINAL.indd 69

treatment they might not otherwise be able to afford,” Reyes explains. “If I had to start all over again, I would do things the same way.” —S.G.

MATTHEW R. MOORE, MD FAANS, FACS Dr. Matthew R. Moore is a leading neurosurgical specialist in South Florida for complex neck, low back, and brain problems that may ultimately require surgery. He has been honored as a “Top Doctor in Neurosurgery” every year since 1999. An honors graduate of Harvard College, Dr. Moore later earned his doctor of medicine from Yale School of Medicine and received an honor and award for his thesis on neuroregeneration. Following Yale, he completed his training through Harvard Medical School’s neurosurgery residency program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where he served as a Harvey Cushing fellow and chief resident. Dr. Moore has expertise in a variety of benign and malignant brain and spine tumors. He also performs the latest microscopic surgeries for neck and lower back pain caused by herniated discs and arthritis. Using these techniques, Dr. Moore has found that most neck and back surgery patients are up and walking the same day without pain.

In July, he will become director of advanced integrated neurosurgical service at Boca Raton Regional Hospital’s Marcus Neuroscience Institute. Dr. Moore was also the founding director of the first Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations–approved spine care center in South Florida. For more than 10 years, Dr. Moore’s surgical group, Neurological Surgery Associates, served as the “team physician” for the Miami Dolphins and the local NHL Players’ Association. In addition to his clinical surgical practice, Dr. Moore frequently provides expert witness consultation, testimony, and independent medical examinations for accident and malpractice cases throughout the U.S through his consultation company, Florida Neurosurgical Experts. Dr. Moore carefully evaluates treatment options with his patient and strives to choose the most appropriate plan for each individual guided by question this in mind: “What would I do if this patient was my family member, my mother, father, or child?”

CHARLES E. LIEBER, MD DOUGLAS E. WEINER, MD Dr. Charles E. Lieber’s goal as an internist and pulmonologist is to build on established patient relationships while creating new ones. In his 35 years of practice, he has emphasized disease prevention and promoted better health to reduce the risk of future medical issues. Dr. Douglas E. Weiner prides himself on spending time to thoroughly understand the needs of his patients and create a personalized health plan. Both doctors have prestigious membership in the American College of Critical Care Medicine and the American College of Chest Physicians. They are also affiliated with the MDVIP network, which allows them to practice personalized, individualized healthcare in a concierge-like environment to optimize patientcentered health, wellness, and prevention. Dr. Charles E. Lieber was trained in pulmonary and critical care at prestigious institutions such as Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Yale University. His training in internal medicine and his specialty training allows him to serve the community’s increasing healthcare demands. As an expert in respiratory diseases, Dr. Lieber takes satisfaction in improving the everyday lives of patients with respiratory illnesses.

In the everchanging landscape of medicine, Dr. Lieber’s partnership with MDVIP affords him the opportunity to consistently follow his patients in an individualized, patient-centered fashion. His practice incorporates comprehensive healthcare to maximize the quality of life for each patient. Dr. Douglas E. Weiner became a physician in order to heal others. In his 30 years of practice, he has seen medicine evolve into a volume-driven process that is more about the number of patients seen and less on the quality of medicine delivered. Utilizing the MDVIP model will allow him the time and resources to provide state-of-the-art healthcare without the worry of time constraints. As a board-certified internist and pulmonologist who has been trained at some of the most prestigious medical institutions such as Boston University School of Medicine and University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Dr. Weiner provides expert medical and respiratory care at the highest level. He has a particular interest in ASTHMA and COPD and is amenable to integrating complementary and alternative strategies for improving his patients’ health. Their Central Medical Group draws patients from throughout Broward County and South Palm Beach County.

EAT DRINK

By Melissa Puppo

SHELBY COOPER

Clockwise from left: The Ya Mas! dining room; hummus mezze; white sangria; whipped feta and labneh; Greek salad martini.

OPENINGS

GONE GREEK

Escape to the Greek islands at Ya Mas! on Las Olas. The chic taverna is hospitality powerhouse Memphis Garrett’s latest concept to open in Lauderdale. No detail is left untouched—including cascading rattan and beaded chandeliers, a bougainvillea-covered patio, and an accent wall depicting Greek gods. The cuisine is just as appealing as the aesthetic, cooked up by executive chef Austin Blake and his team. Explore flavors of the Mediterranean through classic dishes and modern interpretations

from Greece, Turkey, and Israel. Standouts include whipped feta and labneh with pickled onions and pistachio, and a mezze platter with a trio of hummus and options like roasted beet and tzatziki. Other dishes worth noting include the octopus (accompanied by caper berries and gigante beans) and the lamb chops (served with kalamata panisse and mint gremolata). “Ya mas!” means “cheers!” in Greek, and the restaurant’s upbeat vibe (plate smashing included) makes it easy to sip on endless cocktails. Go for the Droseros Spritz, and let the experience take you away to Mykonos—at least until your last bite of baklava. (yamastaverna.com) FORTLAUDERDALEILLUSTRATED.COM | MAY/JUNE 2022

EVENT

ELIXIR of the Gods Mezcal lovers, this one’s for you! UniteUS Group, the company behind popular events such as FemAle Brew Fest and Art Fort Lauderdale, is getting ready for the inaugural celebration of Mezcal Lauderdale. Taking over Le Méridien Dania Beach Hotel May 13-15, the event celebrates all thing mezcal, which translates to “oven-cooked agave.” This distilled alcoholic beverage is made from maguey and is known for its smoky, earthy overtones. Curated by the UniteUs Group CEO Andrew Martineau and his wife Frances Antonio-Martineau, the three-day festival will showcase some of the world’s most popular mezcal brands and include food and cigar pairings, workshops, and a panel discussion on agave

sustainability. “The idea of Mezcal Lauderdale is to share the many nuances of this agave spirit with the U.S. market and dispel the many myths about this ‘sometimes’ smoky cousin of tequila,” shares Martineau. “Both myself and Frances developed our love and exploration of mezcal at La Biblioteca—Toro Latin Kitchen’s Tequila Library, and we’re excited to share our fascination with all of the attendees.” (mezcallauderdale.com)

PERFECT PAIRINGS Fort Lauderdale’s newest beachfront restaurant, Morea, is inspired by the flavors of the Mediterranean. Named after an ancient region in Greece where olives grow, the restaurant uses “fresh, local ingredients, crafted with Mediterranean herbs and spices to create beautiful, memorable dishes with bold flavors and savory aromas,” shares owner Lou Moshakos. Favorites vary from bacon-wrapped dates and hanger steak to a delicious pear purse filled with Port wine–braised pears wrapped in phyllo dough for dessert. Ahead of your visit, Moshakos offers three of Morea’s tastiest food and wine pairings. (moreadining.com)

Pairing 1: The charcuterie and cheese board prepared with cured meats, European cheeses, housemade jam, and pickles pairs well with Domaine Vacheron Sancerre. The wine is medium-bodied with hints of fresh citrus and minerals, and a crisp finish.

Pairing 2: Grilled rack of lamb with Salmoriglio and Peruvian yellow pepper sauce is complemented by Duckhorn Goldeneye Pinot Noir out of California, with notes of dried berries and cherry, and a very crisp finish.

Pairing 3: Whole roasted branzino made with grilled lemon, fresh vegetable salad, herbs, and lemon vinaigrette pairs perfectly with Cakebread Chardonnay— one of the great names to come out of California. This is a full-bodied, delicious Chardonnay displaying flavors of apple and pear, with a long finish.

B OCEAN RESORT

PARTING SHOT

ON ISLAND TIME Maybe you’re already a fan of B Ocean Resort’s mermaid shows at the famed Wreck Bar, but get ready for a new program: Polynesian Nights. For years, the iconic ship-shaped resort was home to the first South Florida Polynesian experience, complete with live music, drums of the islands, and a fire knife dance from Samoa. The new Wednesday night showcase blends historic elements of authentic Polynesian entertainment with modern touches. Guests can also enjoy a sampling of South Pacific–inspired foods, refreshing tropical cocktails, storytelling, and hula lessons. (bhotelsandresorts.com) —Melissa Puppo
