EDITOR’S MESSAGE

AUTUMN MOMENTUM After a long summer of record heat, all of us at Florida Design Naples

LUIS R. RIGUAL Editor-in-Chief lrigual@floridadesign.com

are looking forward to fall and the riches of the new season. And we are not alone. As much as we cherish the less frantic pace of summer and the vacations that come with it, there’s a point every year when people start turning on it. Suddenly, it’s all about pumpkin lattes, falling leaves, and sweater-weather musings—and social media is the biggest perpetrator. On the Gulf Coast, the change of seasons doesn’t come with any significant climate variations—very hot to not-so-hot doesn’t count—but the change is certainly palpable. Part-time residents come back, the social scene kicks into gear, and our local galleries and museums up the ante on their programming. The design scene perks up as well, with new showrooms to discover, new furniture collections to check out, and new talent to keep an eye on. Call it our yearly autumn awakening. Because Florida Design Naples only comes to you twice a year, we like to make it count when it does. This fall 2023/winter 2024 edition is as dynamic as the months it covers. Inside you’ll find some 64 pages dedicated to features on residences in Naples, Sanibel Island, Marco Island, and other spots of interest. Like parents, editors shouldn’t play favorites, but sometimes we can’t help it. As exquisite as all our featured homes are, I couldn’t help but feel partial to the 3,800-square-foot bungalow designer John Cialone of Tom Stringer Design Partners shares with us in this edition. To me, this Old Naples dwelling is representative of everything I love about the Gulf Coast—kudos to Cialone for leaning into vibrant color and vintage accents to further emphasize its charm. Readers with more-is-more sensibilities may find more common ground with the Sanibel Island estate that’s the focus of “High Standards.” Designed by Dwayne Bergmann and Robin McGarry, this massive golf community property is a superior example of volume and scale done right. Beyond design, this edition highlights three very diverse creatives who deserve your attention. Conrad Williams is a glassblower who speaks about his art with the insight of a poet. Tamara Kostianovsky is a visiting artist whose exhibition at The Baker Museum/Artis-Naples delves into the themes of violence, anatomy, and consumption while nodding to Gulf Coast nature through installations that come alive with colorful fabric. And photographer Dean West is a Jack Kerouac of sorts (albeit with a camera rather than a typewriter), driving up and down the peninsula in search of memorable only-in-Florida moments. These are just a few of the reasons why this issue is special. There are plenty more for you to discover once you turn the page.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE

WINNING DESIGN This past May, our sister publication, Florida Design, which covers the entire state, hosted the first-ever Seaglass Awards. These awards honor just about every aspect of Florida’s design industry and salute the talent behind the scenes. The categories were numerous and recognized everything from architecture and landscape design to wine rooms and foyers. I’m proud to say that Southwest Florida brought its A-game to the contest and four of our local design firms won big. These included Denise Fogarty Interiors, Freestyle Interiors, Gloria Black Design, and Collins & DuPont Design Group, which was recognized for use of color (and plenty of other categories) and ended up on the cover of FD’s summer 2023 edition. Turn to page 234 for a look at the winning entries from this part of the peninsula. As we gear up for Seaglass 2024, I hope the Gulf Coast shines again in an even bigger way. I don’t see why not; our region is overflowing with award-worthy design and this issue is proof of that. The editorial team not only scoured our area to bring you 60plus pages of gorgeous features, but there’s also robust coverage on furniture and accessories, as well as on the region’s art scene, which gets more diverse and exciting every day. Overall, this edition is a celebration of aesthetics, design, and innovation, and showcases the ways in which local designers are pushing boundaries and redefining our concepts of luxury at home. From interior spaces that seamlessly blend form and function to spaces that are a true reflection of our coastal-chic lifestyle, Southwest Florida continues to be at the forefront of Florida’s design evolution. Every stunning volume of Florida Design Naples is committed to bringing you the best of the best. We aim to be your trusted source of inspiration, connecting you to the most talented individuals and taking you inside the most intriguing homes that our community has to offer. Thank you for your continued support.

SHERIE WEIDNER Clive Daniel Home “Turnkey Tactics,” page 168

The home that fronts this edition’s cover features the superior work of a designer who’s no stranger to this magazine. Sherie Weidner of Clive Daniel Home set out to give a couple from Chicago the ideal Gulf Coast vacation retreat. “They told me very clearly that they wanted color, color, color, and visual interest,” says the designer. “They didn’t want it to look like anybody else’s home.” Weidner delivered in a major way with a residence that’s elegant, of the moment, and clearly of Florida, by Florida talent.

DEBBIE LORI TRAVIN DLT Interiors “Water World,” page 200

As far as reinventions go, even designer Debbie Lori Travin herself was impressed with the one she gave a Naples condominium recently. “The result was astonishing,” says Travin. “The entire family couldn’t believe it was the same apartment.” Her approach? A contemporary vibe that took full advantage of the residence’s water views. “We revealed the transformed space just in time for Thanksgiving,” adds Travin. “It was a memorable moment for sure.”

CARRIE BRIGHAM & MORGAN CHAPMAN

DWAYNE BERGMANN & ROBIN MCGARRY

JOHN CIALONE

Carrie Brigham Design “Coastal Calling,” page 176

Dwayne Bergmann Interiors “High Standards,” page 186

When a New Jersey couple was referred to Carrie Brigham and Morgan Chapman for their new home in Park Shore, the two designers didn’t hesitate. They quickly developed a plan for the 4,000-square-foot residence that would deliver a thoughtful, timeless, and elegant aesthetic. “The home feels like a warm hug,” says Brigham. “It draws you in from the moment you walk in the front door. That welcoming feeling is something we always strive for.”

“They definitely wanted comfortable, but elevated,” says designer Dwayne Bergmann about a Sanibel Island residence he recently tackled with Robin McGarry. Of utmost importance to the homeowners and the design team was addressing the house’s high ceilings. “Scale was crucial in all our discussions,” adds Bergmann. “The key question for this project was: How do we make these large areas feel comfortable and not overwhelming?’” Happily they found the right answer.

During the two years that it took designers Lisa Guild and Casey O’Brien to complete a golf community home in North Naples, the best part of the process was watching the wife’s enthusiastic responses to the multiple reveals. After completing the main core of the house, Guild remembers, “she walked in and began sobbing. ‘I never thought I would have a home that looked like this,’ she told us. Reactions like that are what we live for and why we do what we do.”

After a couple had lived in a beachfront condo in Naples for two years following its purchase, and were certain of everything it needed to make it a home, they called on Beth Walker-Fenton and Janine Bloom. The Jinx McDonald Designs duo came through with a sophisticated perch that makes the most of what Gulf Coast living is about. “The residence takes full advantage of its optimal views,” says Walker-Fenton. “It’s elegant and coastal, just as requested.”

When a husband and wife approached designer Adriene Ged about designing their new home, Ged was a bit apprehensive. She’d known the couple for years and knew they favored a very classical style, which is not her forte. The clients assured her they were moving away from that and wanted her to steer them to the land of contemporary. “I was sort of an arbitrator,” she says. “But they were smart clients who listened, and that made all the difference.”

Tom Stringer Design Partners “Cozy Charisma,” page 194

Charming is the one word that comes to mind when seeing the 3,800-square-foot bungalow that designer John Cialone transformed for a Midwestern couple as a winter retreat. “While I knew the house had great bones, my goal was to introduce elements that felt warm and collected,” says the designer. “But the best part about this house is the warmth of the clients. My aim was to channel their exuberant and gracious personalities into the design, and we achieved that. The cottage is a reflection of them.”

Extreme Measures HERVÉ LANGLAIS PUSHES MARBLE TO ITS LIMITS WITH THE OOO BENCH text LUIS R. RIGUAL

THE BACKSTORY Designed by Hervé Langlais for StudioTwentySeven, the OOO bench is inspired by the façades of Doge’s Palace in Venice, a master example of gothic architecture. The piece is made from a solid piece of dark green Verdi Alpi marble and marked by the three circles that make up its base.

THE PROCESS

THE FINAL WORD “I refine the marble of the OOO bench to the very limit of the material’s resistance,” says Langlais. “This approach creates a minimal yet classic form that gives it power and lightness.” hervelanglais.design; studiotwentyseven.com

After a precise block of marble is chosen, the OOO bench is put through a machine (the exact details of which are the designer’s secret) that roughly creates its shape. All the surfaces are then hand-finished and polished to give the console its final appearance.

Underfoot Elegance A NEW SHOWROOM IN A FAMILIAR LOCATION BRINGS STARK’S WORLD-RENOWNED CARPETS AND RUGS TO DOWNTOWN NAPLES

above: A living room vignette showcasing Stark’s Amie carpet in heather gray

Founded in 1938, Stark quickly established itself as the discerning tastemaker’s go-to source for quality carpets and rugs. Naples design pros well aware of this fact often turned to the Designer’s Rug Center in the city’s downtown area for the latest Stark collections. Expect Stark’s star to shine even brighter on the Gulf Coast now that the company has acquired the DRC location (at 2150 Tamiami Trail North) and transformed it into Stark Naples, a new entity that stocks about 5,000 rugs and carpet samples in a wide variety of styles and price points

Pool Resources Summer may be behind us, but pool days certainly are not. That’s where Oliver James Lilos’ new collaboration with bombastic Los Angeles designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard comes in. OJL recently released a new pool float featuring two of Bullard’s stripes from a fabric collection inspired by a batik pattern depicting antique Balinese temple etchings. “When we saw this collection imminent,” says Catherine Guest, OJL’s creative director. “Martyn’s style boasts an air of originality, and we couldn’t

SPECIAL OCCASION IN HONOR OF ITS 40TH ANNIVERSARY, HOLLY HUNT RELEASES ITS MOST COMPREHENSIVE COLLECTION TO DATE

Holly Hunt is celebrating its 40th birthday the best way it knows how— with a new collection of furniture and lighting created by the brand’s executive director, Jo Annah Kornak, and founder Holly Hunt herself. HH40 includes 18 new designs, including a sofa, lounge, dining chairs, tables, bedroom furniture, a chandelier, a pendant, and various sconces. Highlights include the Dune lounge chair made with a solid walnut base and hand-tailored upholstery with crisp seams; the Déjà Vu dining table, which features an exaggerated bevel edge with a metal inlay; and the Petro drink table, which resembles both tree trunks and rock formations. “This was an extraordinary collaboration,” says Kornak. “We worked closely with Holly to transform ideas and concepts into pieces that function as a perfectly articulated detail in the story of our clients’ lives.” hollyhunt.com

left: The Ripple side table and

its more diminutive sister, the High Tide drink table, feature bases made of Slovenian marble sourced from a quarry that dates back to 1721.

right: The Petro drink tables are made of weighty bronze that was hand-carved to resemble rock striations.

Ribbons, antiques, floral chintz, and

color, color, color—the late Mario Buatta was once interior design’s most lauded maximalist. A new book from Rizzoli, Anatomy of a Decorator, by author Emily Evans Eerdmans, a former protégé, is being billed as the first authoritative assessment of the tastemaker. The 240page volume offers incredible insight into Buatta’s work through more than 80 scrapbooks that chronicle his career and never-before-seen correspondence with clients and design notables such as John Fowler and Sister Parish. Standout chapters include ones dedicated to Buatta’s mentors, his rise to success, and a breakdown of his design vocabulary and how-tos. Leading the narrative is a foreword by Patricia Altschul, the American socialite and art collector for whom Buatta designed multiple residences. rizzoliusa.com

Surface Matters TWO NEW DESIGNS FROM XTONE UP THE ANTE ON LUXURY COVERINGS

ABOVE: Alpinus White applications on the walls and island of a kitchen setting showcase its variety. LEFT: Blue Roma’s veining and powdery blue coloration make it ideal for spa-like bathroom spaces.

Part of the Porcelanosa group, Xtone is known for sintered stone surfaces in a variety of finishes and thickness. These large-format slabs are ideal for both indoor and outdoor use with application possibilities that cover everything from flooring and countertops to decorative elements. In early fall, the company released two new surfaces to its inventory. Alpinus White is highlighted by a background of cream tones and small crystals that detail the nature of the stone. Blue Roma intertwines coppery veins against an elegant light blue tone that’s reminiscent of quartzite. Both stones are produced at Porcelanosa’s facilities in Spain. xstone-surface.com

Table Tactics Proving there’s apparently nothing she can’t do, designer Kelly Wearstler has partnered with the Belgian homeware brand Serax for her foray into tabletop. Comprising two main lines, Zuma and Dune, the pieces are characterized by abstract motifs and unexpected juxtapositions of materials. For Zuma, Wearstler played with futuristic three-dimensional grids and ancient glassware motifs to strike a visual balance between technology and handcraft. Dune offers a refined take on ancient Greek pottery with two-tone finishes of matte and high-gloss ceramics that enhance the sculptural crests and ridges on dishes and platters. From wine covers it all. kellywearstler.com

ITALIAN INTERESTS FRESH OFF THEIR SALONE DEBUT, NATUZZI’S LATEST FURNITURE PIECES PUT THE FOCUS ON CRAFTSMANSHIP AND COMFORT

ABOVE AND BELOW: Naples-based Emillions can connect art collectors to masterpieces such as Untitled: Variation on Poison Oasis by Jean-Michel Basquiat (above) and Untitled: D-11 by Jackson Pollock.

After a solid showing at the Milan Furniture Fair this past spring, Natuzzi is ready to make its latest furniture available to Florida showrooms come December. And what pieces they are. The Colle sofa (by Bjarke Ingels Group) is being singled out for its comfort thanks to seat and back cushions that lie gently and informally, as well as an additional cushion on the side structure that becomes an extra-soft arm rest and increases the lounging space. The design is distinguished by the “wrinkles” on the upholstery, which enhance the relaxation visual the brand wants to communicate. Also lauded for its coziness, the Wellbe sofa (by Natuzzi’s own design team) is described as “a hymn to

THE ART OF THE DEAL According to a report published by Art Basel and UBS, the global art market totaled $67.8 billion in 2022, growing by 3 percent year-over-year and reaching its second-highest level to date. That same report also showed that the United States remained the top market, commanding 45 percent of global sales totaling $30.2 billion. Considering art as an investment is far outpacing the Dow Jones, services like those provided by addition to connecting buyers to desired pieces, the Naples-based international art advisory is now offering private collection asset management. SCHREIER INTERIOR’S NEW BLACK LABEL SERVICE BRINGS A CONCIERGE SENSIBILITY TO TURNKEY DESIGN

Led by Jeff Schreier, a designer with more than 30 years of experience under his belt, Schreier Interior is regarded as one of Naples’ most successful interior design firms. Its mantra? Infusing clients’ lifestyles and passions into spectacular interiors that reflect who they are. The company’s new Black Level service takes that mission to a higher plane. The process begins when a client meets with a design concierge for a chat about their lifestyle, preferences, and aspirations. Based on this in-depth conversation, a design team is assigned to work closely with Schreier’s preferred vendors and artisans to deliver on requests such as hand-carved furniture, bespoke lighting, or tailored fabrics. Curating an art collection or integrating an existing one into the redesign is also

THE NAPLES GARDEN CLUB’S HOUSE & GARDEN TOUR MAKES A CASE FOR FLORALS AND RESIDENTIAL DESIGN text CHRISTOPHER DAY

Going into its 69th edition, the annual House & Garden Tour is an exercise in creative collaboration. What else can you call an event in which some of the city’s most philanthropic residents open their homes to the public to showcase the flower arranging efforts of Naples Garden Club members and inspire visitors with the tasteful color schemes, architectural features, and design styles of their respective dwellings? The

Ticketholders meet early in the morning at a predetermined location and are then driven to the participating homes in the neighborhoods of Port Royal, Aqualane Shores, and Old Naples. At each of these addresses, folks are welcomed for a tour of the interiors and grounds, and provided information about the location’s artworks, paint colors, furniture, stonework, antiques, and accessories. The glass fixture by Currey & Company provides visual interest without taking away from the crisp, clean kitchen, where concrete pendants by Visual Comfort and dark-finished wood beams introduce texture.

Not long after a young couple purchased a two-story, Old Florida-style home in North Naples, they decided an open layout would suit the 4,100-square-foot dwelling much better in order to comfortably accommodate their three children and three dogs. “The wife is a professional organizer, so she wanted something that was functional and pretty,” says interior Kelli

Esposito, owner of Harper Haus Interiors, the firm hired to bring order and style to the residence. For the homeowner, that meant brightening up and enlarging a dark, matchbox-sized kitchen, creating space for a combination laundry and mudroom, and upgrading a bathroom adjacent to the pool. Because the house sits on a one-acre lot, Esposito and her team had plenty of room to work with. First, the size of the kitchen was doubled by knocking out rear walls and expanding the space into the backyard. The walls between the kitchen and dining room also came down to improve the flow between the spaces and make entertaining more convivial. A combination of traditional cabinetry and open shelving now keeps the united space light and uncluttered. “The lower cabinetry hides the boxes and things you don’t want to see,” says Esposito. “And the wicker and wire baskets on the open shelving are both practical and aesthetic.” The rest of the design decisions involved rethinking the function of overlooked spaces in creative ways. The home originally had a three-car garage, but the design team took over a third of it to create a stylish laundry room and mudroom with locker-style storage for the children’s backpacks, coats, and shoes. Here, the

A small poolside bathroom was also recast as a proper changing room complete with a full vanity, a larger shower, and floating shelves, so family and guests never have to set foot inside the main part of the residence in their wet swimsuits. Due to COVID-related delays, the project took a year-and-a-half to complete, but the clients were overjoyed when they were able to move back into their home, which gained an extra 1,100 square feet because of the renovation. “To this day, they still text and call me to thank us for their new space,” says Esposito. “They feel very comfortable and happy in their home.” harperhausinteriors.com

Palette Philosophy DESIGNER AMANDA LANTZ ON HER LAYERING APPROACH TO COLOR text CHRISTOPHER DAY

What’s your overall approach when incorporating color in a residential interior? Foremost, the client needs to be all in. Once he or she approves, it’s all about layers. I prefer using shades of a particular color—with blue that would be navy to powder to cornflower. This layering approach looks more organic, effortless, and less repeated from room to room. Do you believe color affects mood to the degree that the media tells us it does? I do believe it! When gray was all the rage in design, I couldn’t understand it. Gray days are so depressing. Why bring that into your home? I’m glad we’ve since moved to other neutrals. You’ve worked with some amazing art collections. What’s the key to incorporating colorful art in a home? Don’t be afraid to hang it all together if you want to. Mix large with small, silver frames with gold frames, make it your own style. Additionally, pull some of those colors from the art into the center of the above: To address the significant height of this room, the design team opted for a

Kravet wallcovering of gingko leaves with a golden tint that anchors all other colors in the space, including a Barry Lantz artwork above the fireplace and a wing chair upholstered in yellow velvet by Schumacher. right: Designer Amanda Lantz

room; this helps to ground spaces. What are your clients asking for in terms of palette these days? Shades of green are huge right now, which I adore. Celery, olive, hunter, emerald, the list goes on and on. Green is a good place to start for someone who’s afraid of color. Many clients love blue as well, and we work within that range a ton. What color do you like to surround yourself with at home and why? In my life, I use lots of pink. This is thanks to my grandmother, Eileen. Her home was a beautiful shade of pink and I grew up loving it. I pair it mostly with neutrals Is there a color to stay away from in your opinion? Not really. There is a time and place for every color. lantzcollective.com

left: In this living room, we see Lantz’s approach to color, which is to

use various shades of a hue, and to mix without fear: “Pops of pink give the space a playful touch and shades of creams and taupe were incorporated for sophistication.”

are at play in this study designed by Troy Beasley, including a walnut desk by Beasley himself, argillite from Montana on the fireplace mantel, brick on the wall framing the entrance, and a wool rug underfoot.

DESIGNER TROY BEASLEY ON CREATING CHARACTER THROUGH TEXTURE text CHRISTOPHER DAY

How would you rank the importance of texture in interior design? I feel it’s a critical part of the overall feeling when walking through a space. As a designer you need to strike a balance between items to create and maintain interest. That’s where above: Designer Troy Beasley below: A second-floor seating area reveals the use of wood beams to create interest in the ceiling. The chairs here are upholstered in Donghia mohair and the center table is made of solid bronze.

texture comes in. You’re known for using wood in many of your projects. Is there a particular reason reason behind that? Wood adds warmth to a home, be it modern or traditional. Do you have a favorite species? That all depends on the styling of the interior. If it’s going to be painted, I use poplar, which is cost effective and can easily take a finish. When I’m looking for a grain, I gravitate toward walnut, white oak, either plain sawn so that you see more of the grain, or a rift-cut white oak, which shows a more linear grain. Ash is like white oak and really looks rich. Cherry does as well. I do shy away from maple because it tends to have an unstable look when stained. What are your thoughts on millwork? Custom millwork simply ups the level of sophistication in any space. There are so many ways to enhance a room with millwork, especially by installing it in a place that’s not expected, like a powder room or a bedroom wall. I also like to use it in stairwells and connected areas… anywhere where it’s unexpected. What’s your approach to wallcoverings? Well, they’ve certainly made a comeback over the past five years. I like to use them in place of wood of wallcoverings is so diverse these days. I’ve used cork in a wine cellar, different types of grass cloths, and even those wallpapers that look like murals. They add such personality. What’s your perspective on stone surfaces? As a general rule, I like to incorporate the stone that the architect used on the exterior in the interior. And I tend to use stone that relates back to a specific style of architecture. What do you think is key to making texture succeed in a space? It’s all about the right amount and creating balance. Texture needs to bring comfort and make your heart feel warm. beasleyandhendley.com

While it’s easy to take notice of a home’s textured façade, its tasteful interiors, and luxurious finishes, lighting can make or break that visual experience altogether. For nearly four decades, homeowners from near and far who appreciate this fact have sought the services of Illuminated Design in Fort Myers. Led by Lynne Stambouly, known to locals as the Light Lady, the company is a go-to resource for developers, architects, and necessary, where it should emanate from, and what temperature it needs to be. And with a portfolio that includes multimillion-dollar estates throughout the United States, as well as Central America and the Caribbean, it’s clear Stambouly and her crew know their game well. As she puts it: “Lighting is everything.” Aside from Illuminated Design’s next-generation technology, a quick conversation with Stambouly reveals she is not only the company’s leader but its greatest asset as well. At the drop of a hat, she can point out the differences between cove lighting, linear lighting (illumination mudded into drywall), and wall grazing, a practice in which light is installed at certain lengths to create depth on textured walls, murals, and natural stone applications. collection (“from Renoir to Picasso, it all varies”). And she can speak at length about the connection between light and well-being, especially as it relates to LEDs. “Compared to incandescent and fluorescent lights, LEDs provide more optic choices and user control, as owners can adjust them with an app on their phones,” she says. “But when people rushed out to get them, they didn’t take other things into consideration. You have to ask the right questions. How do feel under bright lights? Do you suffer from migraines? Are you affected by glare? There’s a lot to be considered because when light is absorbed by the human eye it affects our endorphins, our hormones, and our circadian rhythms, so the lesser the quality, the worse off we will be.” They don’t call her the Light Lady for nothing.

why she courts and promotes brands such as Bios, which was developed by a team of former NASA scientists to create lighting to help our bodies function better, and Lutron, whose smart dimmers can mimic sunrise and sunset for optimal sleep. “Light touches every single aspect of a person’s life,” says Stambouly. “We create layers of depth so that when our customers turn on their lights there’s an emotion. It’s the ‘Ah, I’m home’ moment. That’s what I’m after.” illuminateddesign.com

Another of Stambouly’s talents is ensuring Illuminated Design’s inventory reflects the best and the latest of the industry. That’s

Using discarded clothing, Tamara Kostianovsky links humanity to botany. “It resembles a real tree, but it has a palette that’s more indicative of human anatomy,” she says of this work, Rosewood Root. “You know, sort of like the inside of a body with veins, vessels, and things like that.”

There are more than a dozen sculptures and numerous installations in the new Tamara Kostianovsky exhibition at The Baker Museum/Artis-Naples, but visitors should arrive prepared. The pastel tree stumps, embellished birds, and dangling bovine carcasses of Botanical Revolution (through April 7, 2024) are rather provocative. While the Brooklyn artist’s primary media of choice is fabric, a typically innocuous material, the twists and folds of her discarded clothing reveal a reckoning with nature, violence, anatomy, and consumption, as well as hope for transformation.

that I saw what’s behind the skin,” she recalls. “It wasn’t anything major, but it was enough to reveal the colors, the textures, a fascination with a world that’s literally covered under one layer of dermis. That absolutely haunted me ever since. When things are both beautiful and horrific, that’s what I’m after.” In the years since (while being represented by Slag and RX galleries in New York and Paris), Kostianovsky has created myriad works from her studio, some of which are now in private collections. Many others have appeared in solo and group exhibitions worldwide, which is how she caught the eye of Courtney McNeil, the Baker’s director and chief curator, who reached out in 2020 to discuss a potential exhibition.

Born in Israel to Argentinian parents, Kostianovsky says the moments she spent in her father’s plastic surgery office as a teen inform a great deal of her current work. “It was there

After learning Kostianovsky’s show at The Baker would be the artist’s first in the Southeastern United States and would mark her first visit to Naples, McNeil invited her to research the area’s native flora and fauna with the help of a bird expert and biologist. Kostianovsky agreed and soon she found herself studying and identifying native species around Naples Botanical Garden. “It was just delightful,” she says. “A really inspiring trip.” In the wake of that visit, Kostianovsky recreated Florida’s birds in threedimensional forms and perched them on woven tapestry, thereby updating antique French wallpaper patterns originally created under false pretenses to promote colonization. “The birds that were in those wallcoverings were not exactly the birds of the Americas,” she explains. “They had been replaced by other birds, such as peacocks and birds of Southeast Asia, in an effort to exoticize this land and make Her time on the Gulf Coast also served as a reminder of the fragility of our environment, a topic she explored previously in Nature Made Flesh, a collection of works resembling tree stumps. “There’s an ecological concern in Florida today about our relationship to nature, how we either understand it or we don’t, and my work speaks to that from different perspectives,” explains Kostianovsky. “[My art] is about the destruction of the Earth and how violent impulses, such as those explored in my carcass pieces, are transposed to the natural world and to the world of botany.” The works also ask two important questions: What are we made of and what could we become? artisnaples.org

After years of spending most of his days mastering Williams with his Formale collection, which is made of opal white glass with precious metal surface infusions.

the delicate art of glassblowing, Conrad Williams is finding his very existence is starting to mirror his creations. “I spent a lot of my early career working toward that very symmetrical, very controlled ability to manipulate glass to do what I wanted it to do, and then I got to a point where I’d had enough of that control,” he says. “Now I want to capture the organic fluidity of the material with a controlled execution. It’s a bit of a reflection of where I am in my life.” Williams’ fascination with glass began as a teen hobby that morphed into a full-time passion after he decided to enroll in the California College of the Arts. After graduation, he interned at renowned glassblower Benjamin Moore’s studio in Seattle and Eventually he made it back to his native Naples to launch his own studio, where he now teaches workshops on the art from fall to spring. Living in Southwest Florida provides the artist with endless inspiration. “I love being outside in my garden working and suddenly seeing the reflection of a bald eagle flying overhead on the glass I’m creating,” he says. “It’s wonderful to be in an

What begins as a glowing blob of matter at the end of a large pole gets twisted, and then meticulously poked and shaped with pliers and other tools until a desired shape starts to emerge. Throughout the whole process, Williams moves swiftly and with purpose as there’s only a small window before the molten glass becomes unmalleable. It’s a fluid dance performance as much as it’s a skill. Lately, Williams’ focus has been on making his practice as environmentally sound as possible. He started by installing solar panels in his studio, which generate enough power to keep his electric furnaces running all year. He also purchases carbon credits to negate his propane use and donates a portion of the

Stormy conditions, highway roads, and dangerous wildlife are all par for the course for photographer “It’s not all glitz and glamour,” he says. “I feel like [my photography] taps a little bit into the dark side of Florida, and that’s not a bad thing.” Best known for meticulously staged photographs that take everyday moments out of the ordinary realm, the Australian-born West, a Naples regular, spent most of his early adult life in Toronto and New York creating award-winning imagery for brand partnerships with the likes of Disney, St-Germain, and MTV—companies that tuned into the artist’s atmospheric and cinematic language. Two weeks before the COVID shutdown in 2020, he moved to Miami in search of sunshine, sensing inspiration would

follow: “It made sense to me that the weird and the wonderful of Florida would be the perfect surrealist canvas.” He was right. West spent the isolating days of the pandemic alone with his digital camera traveling from Miami to the Panhandle in search of inspiration and subject matter. One byproduct from that period is Palma de la Noche, a photograph of a palm tree that’s an amalgam of composited images captured during his 12-month trek through the state. “The world I created for that shot is not complete reality, but the object that gets shown actually is,” he explains. “You never see a beautiful palm tree alone, but I kept going out in the middle of the night to photograph palm trees that I had scouted all over Florida.” West’s more orchestrated shoots can take just as long to produce. The vision for Luis (The Wrangler) #2, an image of a bare-chested cowboy staring down an alligator in a Boca Raton pool, took months to fine-tune, but it was time well spent as it’s become one of West’s most popular shots. Unlike other artists who churn out copious material for exhibition, West is content supplying images at a trickle throughout the year. As of press time in early September, he was working on The Suburbs, which depicts a woman exiting a grocery store as a tornado begins to form nearby, with plans to release it in late 2023. After that, his focus will shift to collecting photos for a Florida-centric book he hopes to publish in about two years. “I know it takes me a long time to produce my work, so yes, I’m a bit slower than most photographers,” says West. “But you know what? Sometimes the turtle wins the race.” deanwest.com

RULED BY NATURE

IN NAVIVA, THE FOUR SEASONS’ TENTED SANCTUARY IN MEXICO, BIOPHILIC DESIGN PRINCIPLES ELEVATE THE GUEST EXPERIENCE text DAPHNE NIKOLOPOULOS

Naviva was built on the principles of biophilic design and biomimicry, which focus on the relationship between nature and the built environment. The Arrival Pavilion immediately immerses guests in the concept.

On a rocky cliff above the Pacific coast in Punta Mita, Mexico, a cluster of tented hideaways peeks through a densely wooded preserve, its white sail “roofs” flashing in the sun. Undulating wovenbamboo forms tunnel into the jungle like a Crusoe-esque treehouse. What looks like a castaway dream, or perhaps a summer camp for adults, is a new concept by Four Seasons Resorts to capture the essence of nature through biophilic design. Naviva, A Four Seasons Resort, is the brand’s first tented resort in

world through the built environment. Like all inspired design, this one began with the setting: 48 acres of pristine forest on a peninsula with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and 575 feet of beachfront. Such a tract begged to be developed mindfully, so Luxury Frontiers managing director Graeme Labe envisioned an architectural narrative that was so intertwined with the surroundings that it was hard to see A key part of Labe’s vision were the accommodations in hybrid tent environments. Constructed with a combination of canvas, stone, wood, and plaster, the 15 tents feel semi-permanent by design. Whereas the bedrooms and bathrooms are air-conditioned, living spaces are naturally ventilated via single-skin canvas “walls” that open up to the elements, keeping nature always close at hand. Living areas flow out to expansive decks with firepits and private plunge pools nestled between the woods and the ocean.

above and below: A key principle of Luxury Frontiers’ design was the balance between air-conditioned and open-air spaces. The bedroom can be air-conditioned while living spaces are naturally ventilated.

In the expression of biophilic design, natural shapes—whether on a structure or within a textile pattern—are paramount. In Naviva, this is apparent upon arrival, where constructions of local timber and bamboo, woven in lattice-like patterns, mimic the shapes and movement of leaves, cocoons, hives, or caterpillars. Throughout the resort’s rambling buildings, references to the natural world can be seen on textures and patterns, from the locally manufactured furniture and millwork to the collection of crafts by local artisans. Among the principles of biophilic design and stimuli. Naviva’s answer to this: a wellness center composed of two spa pods, a “House of Heat” temazcal, and a pool tucked inside the jungle. The pods are inspired by the seed of the ceiba tree, which represents the spring of new life. Crafted with bamboo

A TRUSTWORTHY REAL ESTATE PRO on your corner is everything when it comes to the vacation home hunt. Midwesterners David and Lori Oestermeyer discovered this firsthand when they set out to find a Naples winter retreat. After multiple site visits, the husband and wife returned to Chicago without any prospects. But when Lori learned of a 3,000-square-foot new build in the Mediterra private community, she asked their Realtor to investigate. The agent came back with good news. “She told us: ‘it’s exactly what you’re looking for,’” says Lori. “We basically bought the place sight unseen.” The real estate broker also proved her worth when she recommended the ideal interior designer to transform the house: Sherie Weidner of Clive Daniel Home. “We knew from the first call that Sherie was the right choice,” says Lori. “Part of that was her background and the other part was her assurance that we would be involved in the design process, and that everything would be done by the time we moved in.” 170 FLORIDA DESIGN’S NAPLES EDITION 8-1

As the couple had already selected many of the finishes before her involvement (including white oak flooring for the main traffic areas and white cabinetry against a marble mosaic backsplash in the kitchen), Weidner concentrated on accents, fixtures, and furnishings. “They told me very clearly that they wanted color, color, color, and visual interest,” says the designer. “They didn’t want it to look like anybody else’s home.” Weidner went to work on a plan after scouring all 85,000 square feet of the Clive Daniel Home showroom in Naples and presented it to the homeowners when they returned to Florida. After that, they all headed to the showroom, where Lori and David were able to see and touch samples of all the furnishings and finishes Weidner had proposed. There, the designer also led them through a virtual presentation that detailed how the layouts and space planning would work from room to room. Satisfied, the couple flew back to Chicago and Weidner waited for construction to finish so she could begin the installation work.

Neutral furniture with pops of color was the approach the design team selected for this outdoor living/dining area. All seating is by Brown Jordan.

And work there was. In the bar, the design team opted for blue-gray cabinets and a Carrara marble backsplash to complement the one in the kitchen. In the great room ceiling, beams were installed to match the mahogany front door. A metal-and-glass door was custom ordered from Hope Windows and then used as an eye-catching separation between the study and main living area. Because the Oestermeyers mentioned that the study would sometimes be used as a guest bedroom, a blackout overhead shade for total privacy was incorporated. Then came the furniture and, shortly thereafter, all the “color, color, color” the homeowners had requested in the form of pillows, rugs, drapery, wallcoverings, and bedding. To say Weidner was meticulously involved in the project is an understatement. As the day of the big reveal approached, she herself steamed the linens, made the beds, hung the art, and set the table. “I like to do this with every house that I finish,” she says. “That way, when the homeowners arrive, they can simply drop their bags and start living.”

FOR MANY YEARS, the coastal allure of Naples has enticed frequent vacation stays for New Jersey couple Danielle and Mark Leonardis. They repeatedly booked the Inn on Fifth and loved the downtown vibe. But the more they ventured away from the pulse of the area, the more they began to realize what other enviable neighborhoods had to offer. When they decided to build a permanent residence, they set their sights on Park Shore for its lush green gardens and intrinsic natural beauty. “Now we have the best of both worlds,” says Danielle, “a peaceful retreat that offers every amenity we could ask for and the luxury of going downtown any time we like.” As luck would have it, another New Jersey couple living just a few doors down referred them to Carrie Brigham and Morgan Chapman, the creative team who had brought their interior vision to life. “It was a dream to be referred by our fabulous client,” says Brigham. “When they said they gave us permission to copy anything they had in their home, I was surprised. But I also considered it a

challenge to ensure Mark and Danielle’s home came out completely different, yet with the same warm, welcoming, and personalized feel.” Shortly after the 4,000-square-foot floor-plan was developed, Danielle and Mark brought in the interior designers, who immediately embraced the project. Their overall approach was a thoughtful, timeless, and elegant aesthetic that would also be highly functional for the couple and their family. They leaned toward traditional but with a fresh and updated spin that nods to transitional style. “The design evolved with Danielle’s input and our expertise,” says Chapman. “She knew she wanted a classic palette that hinted coastal but was not favoring the typical blue tones. The sage green and neutral colorway started progressing with the fabrics, and it naturally made its way into some of the other materials.”

A marble mosaic tile backsplash and white range hood take the spotlight in the kitchen. Suzanne Kasler counter stools for Hickory Chair complement the custom bleached walnut island.

Minimal yet significant changes included switching the kitchen’s range wall to generate a high-impact focal point, altering a bathroom layout to create a wet room, and adjusting trusses in the primary bedroom to accommodate a hipped ceiling with a classic tongue-and-groove design. Danielle is an avid cook who enjoys the new kitchen floorplan with its stunning marble mosaic feature wall behind the range. A bleached walnut island and a white-washed poplar tongueand-groove ceiling bring soft warmth to the design. The couple also loves wine and wine culture, so Brigham designed a custom wine bar in the great room for effortless entertaining. “We had two different visions, so Carrie morphed them together,” says Mark. “We couldn’t be happier. Everything in this house is enjoyable—even the garage.” Borelli Construction of Naples went above and beyond to execute the design team’s concepts with custom finishes for the built-ins and an outdoor fireplace. All the furnishings were made to order with applied trims and specialty fabrics. “The synergy between our clients, Borelli Construction, and our team ensured a phenomenal result and a friendship I will cherish,” adds Brigham.

The design aesthetic reflects a harmonious blend of the owners’ distinct personal styles, and the layout is intimate and casual yet large enough to host several guests comfortably. “This home feels like a warm hug,” says Brigham. “From the moment you walk in the door, a humongous antique mirror reflects the warm light, and the great room is as cozy as ever. The immediate view to the pool and backyard oasis pulls you in, and the connection between the cooking space and dining room feels like you’re sitting at the best table in a chef’s kitchen.” Because they were living in New Jersey throughout most of the construction, the couple didn’t experience the grand reveal until their home installation. “The pure joy, excitement, and appreciation they expressed to us when they saw their home completed was priceless,” says Chapman. “We aren’t there full-time just yet,” says Danielle. “But the minute we arrive, we feel totally at peace. We open those doors, hear the birds, and see the pool, and we’re immediately in our happy place.”

WHEN FORT MYERS designers Dwayne Bergmann and Robin McGarry first met two new clients building a rather impressive estate on Sanibel Island, they were immediately charged with a tall order—both in terms of the scope of the project and the size accommodations that would be necessary for one of its homeowners to feel comfortable. The husband, you see, stands more than six-and-a-half feet tall, which meant larger furniture, higher-than-usual countertops, and other height adjustments that designers don’t usually worry about. There was also the massive footprint of the dwelling itself: 4,300 square feet in the main residence and 2,100 square feet in the adjoining guest house. Plus, soaring ceilings, biggerthan-usual rooms, and extra space in general. This was a grand commission in more ways than one. right: One of the wife’s favorite colors is “Hermès orange,” so designers Dwayne Bergmann and Robin McGarry ensured the hue was prevalent indoors and out.

“Scale was a crucial point in all our discussions,” says Bergmann. “The key question was: How do we make these large areas feel comfortable and less overwhelming?” Because the designers were hired during the architectural development phase, they were able to suggest interior modifications to the builder, which resolved a number of those height-related concerns. “Our involvement was more than what we’re typically used to,” says Bergmann. “We not only addressed issues with scale, but we also had input on the roofing materials, the railing design, the cladding on the columns, and even the crown molding details.” In terms of décor style, the couple was clear and to the point: high-end luxury and no coastal vibes whatsoever. “They definitely insisted on a comfortable look, but elevated as it related to finishes, furnishings, and appointments,” says Bergmann. “They wanted a sophisticated vacation house where the entire family could get together, especially in the winter.” The design crew began in the living room with a stately Fabricut sectional, a substantial area

Side tables from Charleston Forge and Theodore Alexander, and geometric table lamps from Visual Comfort complete the desired effect: contemporary elegance with a welcoming aura. The dining room echoes this convivial spirit with a Chaddock table surrounded by six Theodore Alexander chairs in bright yellow upholstery. Considering other spaces, this one seems downright diminutive, but the homeowners insisted on the type of dining room where those at the head of the table don’t have to shout to hear one another. In the kitchen (the husband’s domain), special attention was paid to the cabinetry, crafted 190 FLORIDA DESIGN’S NAPLES EDITION 8-1

of walnut with hand-stitched leather panels. Cambria Ironsbridge countertops, which the design team installed more than two inches above standard height, brighten the room and provide a counterpoint to the dark walnut floors found throughout the rest of the home. Once the installation work was done and they were able to put the finishing touches on the residence, Bergmann and McGarry eagerly awaited the homeowners’ visit. Hurricane Ian delayed that homecoming but left the property intact. When they did finally make it, the husband marveled at the way his height requests were fulfilled and the wife celebrated the cosmopolitan sentiments from room to room. As for Bergmann and McGarry? They now have yet another satisfied-customer story for their portfolio.

Cozy Charisma VIBRANT COLOR AND VINTAGE ACCENTS SPEAK VOLUMES IN A CHARMING BUNGALOW IN OLD NAPLES THERE’S NOTHING LIKE A CASUAL STROLL through an Old Naples neighborhood to inspire a home purchase. Just ask a Midwestern couple who were searching for a lowmaintenance retreat where they could experience the city’s lively culture, boutiques, and restaurants. Upon discovering a 3,800-square-foot bungalow surrounded by lush mature trees and situated just blocks from the beaches and the downtown pulse of Fifth Avenue, they knew they had found their Gulf Coast sweet spot. “These clients wanted to be in town and part of the charming historic Naples scene,” says John Cialone, an interior designer with the Chicago-based firm Tom Stringer Design Partners. “We have worked together on several projects before and have become close over the years, so I knew their preferences.” Built as a spec property, the house embodied a contemporary, coastal cottage aesthetic. Cialone expanded on this concept by adding accents of bold color and textural furnishings. He upgraded and added to the existing lighting and installed patterned and textured wallcoverings in a few key areas. For the design concept, he strove for a tropicalinspired oasis built around comfort and ease of entertaining. His primary goal was to enable the home to accommodate a large crowd without sacrificing coziness when it was

Situated amid the lush foliage and mature trees of an Old Naples neighborhood, this picturesque bungalow offers a cozy Gulf Coast retreat for its Midwestern owners. The dwelling’s prime location is within walking distance of the beach and the stylish boutiques and restaurants of Fifth Avenue.

just the owners. A crisp blue and white color scheme transitions into tones of sage green, coral, aqua, melon, and raspberry, creating a vibrant coastal vibe. “I had been in Paris a few months prior and pulled two beautifully embroidered fabrics from Pierre Frey that reminded me of the textiles you see in Mexico and Argentina,” says the designer. “I knew these would appeal to the clients for their handcrafted beauty and intense use of color, so I built the design around them.” With multiple grandchildren and dogs, the homeowners aspired to combine elegance with longevity without worries of wear or stains. The foyer’s indoor-outdoor woven sisal rug offers a stylish yet durable solution for this high-traffic area that doubles as a mudroom. In the dining room, bamboo-style McGuire side chairs upholstered in a deep blue indoor-outdoor Pierre Frey striped fabric bring vibrance to a neutral custom banquette covered in an all-weather woven. The watery blue Island Raffia wallcovering creates textural contrast against the room’s crisp white plantation shutters. “The color palette and design style are very much a Florida theme,” says one of the homeowners. “John’s choice of fixtures adds to the beauty and complements our many art pieces.” Bridging the pool courtyard and great room, an open-air loggia with a television, fireplace, and spacious seating features pocketed sliding glass doors, allowing an authentic indoor/outdoor experience. “While I knew the house had great bones, my goal was to introduce elements that felt warm and collected,” says Cialone. “But the best part about this house is the warmth of the clients. My aim was to channel their exuberant and gracious personalities into the design, and we achieved that.” above: In the dining room, a blue Pierre Frey wallcovering and island-themed art solidify the home’s coastal vibe. Bamboo-style McGuire chairs surround a table by Hickory Chair. “The dining area is designed to function as both a workspace and a casual dining room,” says interior designer John Cialone. “I personally like to sit on the banquette with my laptop when I’m visiting.”

A CONDO RENOVATION ON GULF SHORE BOULEVARD CAPITALIZES ON THE TEXTURES AND COLORS INSPIRED BY ITS BEACHSIDE LOCATION

DESIGNERS OFTEN PROFESS THEIR greatest reward comes from their clients’ reactions at the moment of the big reveal. And when homeowners are awestruck, the feeling is even sweeter—a true testament to the project’s success. Such was Debbie Lori Travin’s experience when she transformed an incredibly dated Naples condominium to the extent that it was unrecognizable by the clients who purchased it. “The result was astonishing,” says Travin, owner of the Miami Beach firm DLT Interiors, who tackled the task in just six months. “The entire family was in awe of their new home and couldn’t believe it was the same apartment.” Located at The Regent at Park Shore, one of the most enviable beachfront high-rise condominiums in the city, the spacious 10,000-square-foot dwelling boasts a private elevator entrance that opens onto a lavish grand salon with an open living and dining area. The spacious floor plan includes a family room, a den, a movie theater, and five bedrooms, and just about every space offers inspiring views of the Gulf of Mexico and Venetian Bay. “The water vistas are jaw-dropping,” says Travin. “As soon as you enter from the private elevator, it feels like you’re on a boat.”

bench that maintains a visual lightness with its transparent acrylic legs. The piece is beautifully balanced with a large-scale painting by Carol Benson-Cobb that harmoniously complements the watery hues incorporated throughout.

To complement said views, the designer opted for a soft, neutral color palette, mirroring the colors of the sea. Warm taupe, beige, off-white, light blue, and aqua wrap the grand salon in plush tranquility. Custom upholstered furniture (in opulent silk velvet, soft chenille, and textured bouclé) elevates the luxurious ambiance, as do the custom window treatments elegantly adorned with stunning silverbeaded tape trim. Crowning the seating area, a magnificent raw crystal chandelier suspends over a pair of reflective antique-mirrored cocktail tables, reiterating the organic vibe pervading the modern coastal aesthetic. A separate seating area with blue velvet swivel chairs appears to float over the sparkling gulf waters, creating a breathtaking environment for cocktail hour with guests. Serene hallway vignettes throughout display contemplative abstract pieces by artist Carol Benson-Cobb that incorporate the water hues of the interior palette. In the enclosed den, warm neutrals and gray tones emit a cozy feel while the comforting presence of a fireplace in the family room radiates an intimate glow at night. “An additional media room/movie theater also offers a special place for everyone to relax together and enjoy,” notes the designer. “The custom recliners in that space are particularly beloved by all.”

Travin thoughtfully designed each of the children’s bedrooms to reflect their respective preferences. The son wanted a masculine bedroom with a natural and charcoal color palette, and the daughters opted for more feminine hues—one blue, one pink. The primary suite exudes resortstyle luxury, with custom velvet pieces enhanced with shimmering crystal lighting features. “The client, who resides in Nashville, wanted to be present with her family when the project was completed,” says Travin. “We began redesigning the entire apartment during the summer and revealed the transformed space just in time for their Thanksgiving family gathering. It was a memorable moment for all of us.”

NAPLES CAN BE A SMALL TOWN. During a dinner party at their friends’ home at the Esplanade Golf & Country Club, a Minnesota couple fell in love with the art-filled spaces and “color chakra story” of the house. The interior design, they were excited to learn, had been spearheaded by Lisa Guild and Casey O’Brien of LMG Design, the firm the Midwestern husband and wife had just tapped for their own new residence in the area. Known for Gulf Coast homes marked by texture and color, the Naples-based LMG had already tackled multiple properties at Esplanade. “That’s mostly how it goes for us,” says Guild. “The majority of our projects are referral-based, and these clients were no exception.”

The design team didn’t have to look far for colors and patterns to unify the home’s open living, dining, and kitchen areas with its remaining footprint. The dining room’s cheerful bird-and-blossoms themed wallpaper inspired the ideal hues of periwinkle, coral, and green found throughout the residence. 210 FLORIDA DESIGN’S NAPLES EDITION 8-1

The homeowners are happy they acquiesced to a fireplace on the covered lanai, the home’s ideal transitional space.

At their first meeting with Guild and O’Brien, the couple (an attorney and a pro figure skating coach with multiple residences in their home state), expressed their desire for a coastal, cottage-inspired aesthetic for the 2,700-square-foot property, which would serve as a winter retreat for them and their two adult children. They also tasked LMG with enhancing the kitchen, primary bedroom, and lanai with structural buildouts. Yet the winning shade of all is blue in various tonalities: a grayish version on an accent wall that frames the TV in the family room, a light variation on the Thibaut wallcovering in a guest bathroom, and multiple inflections of the color on accents, accessories, and art.

feel impactful,” says designer Casey O’Brien. “This was achieved with blueand-white wallpaper by Thibaut that evokes chinoiserie but in a less formal and more playful way.”

Textures also play a big role in the coastal look of the home, with rattan, grass cloth, sisal, linen, and raffia in various spaces. Backdropped by whitewashed wood, the materials’ organic vibe is both casually elegant and welcoming. Further adding to the house’s charm are bespoke buildouts in the form of built-in chests, stone installations, and shiplap walls. During the two-year project, the designers’ favorite moments were watching the wife’s enthusiastic responses to the multiple reveals. After completing the main core of the house, Guild remembers, “she walked in and began sobbing. ‘I never thought I would have a home that looked like this,’ she told us. Reactions like that are what we live for and why we do what we do.”

DIANE SMITH STILL REMEMBERS WHEN she first laid eyes on the sprawling, beachfront condo in Marco Island that she and her husband David now call home. While scouting the tranquil barrier island for a winter retreat, she revisited the unit twice on the same day. “I could imagine my family being comfortable there,” she reminisces. “There was room to breathe and move, and the views were spectacular.” Once the 3,000-square-foot residence was theirs, the Maryland couple decided to live in it as it was before making any renovation decisions. After two years, they knew exactly what worked about the apartment and what didn’t, and their search for decor help led them to Beth WalkerFenton and Janine Blume of Jinx McDonald Interior Designs in Naples. “They told us they liked the coastal feel, which is one of the reasons I think they liked our company,” says Walker-Fenton. “Coastal is something we do exceptionally well.” 218 FLORIDA DESIGN’S NAPLES EDITION 8-1

They liked the designers’ confidence and were certain they could complete the project and meet their expectations despite a tight deadline. “Our building has very strict policies,” says Diane, “so noisy construction that involves jackhammering and knocking down walls can only be done during the off-season [in the summer months].” While Diane and David first envisioned the place as their snowbird retreat, midway through the process they changed their minds and decided to make it their primary residence. This meant a complete overhaul of the floor plans to enhance the flow and functionality of each space. One of the design team’s first challenges was converting the octagonal foyer into a linear hallway. This required squaring off walls in the laundry room, guest and master baths, and in a storage closet. In the primary bedroom, the walk-in closet was enlarged by borrowing space from the original primary bath, which was transformed into an idyllic sanctum of hygiene and relaxation marked

by stunningly veined white marble. One of the pleasant surprises of the renovation was the addition of a small study for David, which resulted when a partition wall was added in the laundry room. Transforming the boxy kitchen into the heart of the home required days of demolition. Walls came down so the aquamarine vantages of the Gulf could be savored, and a stylish blend of mixed finishes and top-of-the line appliances came in. In the end, all the dust and noise was worth it. As far as the design vibe goes, the aforementioned coastal influences are impossible to miss with a palette that leans to blue throughout the entire residence and warm textures like wood, raffia, and sisal here and there. In the open kitchen, Silestone countertops and a quartz backsplash provide an organic touch. In the dining room sits an 11-foot, double-pedestal table for 10 that had to be craned in through the glass doors. “That was a production,” says Diane, “but being able to have my whole family sit together during meals was high on my wish list.” Sustainable touches like Legno Bastone wide-plank flooring and wood crossbeams unify the expansive spaces. With the renovation behind them, the Smiths now get to enjoy the Florida home they had always envisioned—usually from their favorite west-facing terrace at sunset. “People here do love to watch the sun go down, and now so do we,” says Diane. “We truly own a slice of paradise.”

Adriene Ged, director of interior design for EDGE in Naples, made numerous bold suggestions for the great room, including the thick black frame made of cabinet paneling that complements the facing built-in wall unit.

homeowners for many years, designer Adriene Ged was rather surprised when they approached her to redesign their new house. “Most of their previous homes were very formal and had a lot of trim, decorative molding, and extensive details, and that’s not really me,” says the director of interior design at EDGE Cabinetry | Interior Design | Closets, a Naplesbased firm that’s true to its moniker. “I always want to push design boundaries a little bit.” Once the new clients revealed they wanted to move away from their traditional style in favor of a more contemporary and comfortable home, Ged was eager to get started. Also involved in the process was

builder Michael Diamond, whose Naples-based Diamond Custom Homes has been erecting awardwinning dwellings throughout Florida since 2010. The homeowners, who had recently become empty nesters, envisioned a single story, “tropical transitional” house on an oversized lot with a large pool and entertainment area, as well as a guest house for visiting family and friends. Inside the nearly 5,000 square feet of living space they wanted a grand floor plan with high ceilings throughout. It was a tall order, but Diamond was certain his crew would come through. “We are very fortunate to work with the leading architects and interior designers in town,” he says. “We love to execute ambitious projects and give them our own spin.”

EDGE’s architectural team designed, fabricated, and installed the island peninsula with a wood surface and accented it with gold to match the trim on the custom hood vent and the pendant lights. The impressive piece also serves as a dining table.

Although they agreed about the exterior design and layout, the husband and wife were not always on the same page about the indoor environment, so Ged served as an arbitrator of sorts. “The wife kind of drove the bus in terms of aesthetics,” says the designer. “When it came to palette, sometimes the husband needed a little push. I was happy to coax him when required.” In fact, one could say the entire design process was an exercise in compromise and trust for all parties involved. When larger than anticipated decorative beams were suddenly a must for the great room, the homeowners hesitated, but Ged assured them they would make the big statement the room needed, and she was right. When the kitchen needed a transition to delineate it from the other

main areas of the home, Ged proposed a thick band of black paneling to frame the opening and connect it to the black-on-black bar at the opposite end. Again, the clients were apprehensive, but were immediately convinced once they saw the drama such a feature imparted. And while they all agreed that the study was an ideal room to introduce bold color, the husband wasn’t too keen on the way it was done: cabinetry painted in Sherwin Williams’ Gale Force Blue, a Vanguard sofa made of soft vegan leather to match, and gold accents for shine. “We had to convince him about the use of blue and gold together,” says Ged. “He wasn’t too thrilled about the modern gold light fixture at first, but he came around.” And rightly so.

“We are very fortunate to work with the leading architects and interior designers in town,” says builder Michael Diamond. “We love to execute ambitious projects and give them our own spin.”

The husband had a win of his own when it came to the exterior. While out golfing one day, he saw the exact type of black metal pergola he wanted for the pool deck and reported back to Ged. “As soon as he told us we switched gears,” says the designer. “The landscape architect and everyone involved in the pool design made it happen. And it was the right decision.” In the end all the second guessing and back-and-forth thinking paid off with an elegant and contemporary home that feels as at home here as it would in southern California. “Adriene steered us in the right direction,” says the wife. “We love her vision and we love our new home.” below: The same Portuguese limestone that surrounds the TV set in the

DWAYNE BERGMANN & FREESTYLE INTERIORS After Hurricane Ian’s devastation last year, industry veterans Dwayne Bergmann of Dwayne Bergmann Interiors, and Faith Fix of Freestyle Interiors, united to aid their community. Aligning on this common goal sparked an idea in the two long-time peers: We’re stronger together. To commemorate their 10-year anniversary, Dwayne Bergmann Interiors acquired Freestyle Interiors, pooling over 50 years of combined experience. The design team will double in size, growing to 45 members. The experienced and diverse team hails from around the globe, including Brazil, Thailand, Canada, Scotland, Georgia, Kuwait, and Syria. This alliance expands the firms’ capacity to handle a wider range of projects in type and scope.

Both firms will continue to maintain their distinct identities, operating from three locations: Naples, Bergmann in Fort Myers, and Fix in Bonita Springs. Dwayne Bergmann Interiors will continue to service couture design, while Freestyle focuses on custom interiors. This partnership enables them to extend their reach beyond Naples, Fort Myers, and Bonita Springs establishing a satellite office in Miami and opening doors to projects worldwide. Bergmann and Fix share a common leadership style and commitment to philanthropy. They are confident that this “stronger together” transition will bring substantial benefits and rewards.

PALETTE PRECISION Category: Use of Color Winner: Collins DuPont Design Group

“For this Naples home, we looked to luxury yacht clubs from all over the world for inspiration, and then we began to think about palette in regard to all things coastal,” says designer Sherri DuPont. “Introducing red, a color that has a long maritime connection, instantly elevated this home. Rich red and white patterned armchairs that nod to iconic sailing flags, along with sleek yacht photographs, make the dining room an exciting space for entertaining guests. Varying blues were interspersed throughout, including a high-gloss cobalt island and chambray dry bar. The use of color is sophisticated and works effortlessly with the stained on top.” collins-dupont.com
