WHEN A YOUNG ASSET MANAGER and her husband began to look for a house in Florida, they were shown a residence by Le Chateau Custom Homes that they immediately knew was right for them. The couple, who also own property in New York City and Pennsylvania, particularly liked that the 7,000-square-foot house was in a country club community near Palm Beach and that they could customize the buildout to suit their needs as the structure was in the initial stages of construction. Once real estate matters were settled, the husband and wife selected Rogers Design Group to oversee the interior architecture and design of the house. As it was early in the process, the builder worked with the design team on many of the construction above: A view of the sitting room reveals four comfortable club chairs and a curved wood ottoman grounded by a hand-woven rug. The room is perfectly arranged to take in the view of the pool and waterway behind the house.

decisions to ensure the final result was a custom abode with aesthetics that checked off all of the homeowners’ boxes.

“Our clients requested that we create a light and bright interior with a gentle contemporary look and a focus on artwork,” says Lorraine Rogers-Bolton, founder and principal designer of Rogers Design Group, who worked on the commission with senior designer Amanda Wyant Binns. “They wanted an overall ‘happy feeling’ throughout the home.

We achieved this by selecting furnishings with pleasing shapes and a neutral backdrop with touches of pink, the wife’s favorite color.”

The design team also worked closely with the homeowners to select art from galleries across the U.S. and Canada, and to commission artworks from artists to create an eclectic collection that would complement the interiors. “Strong and feminine describes our client perfectly,” says Rogers-Bolton. “And that’s reflected in the overall look of the home.”

Upon entering the home, it becomes evident that the pieces selected wholly fit into the client’s criteria. Atop washed oak flooring in the foyer is a white malachite console paired with art by Amy Donaldson and a custom bench with an alabaster bubble mirror. Directly ahead is the sitting room, which is dominated by a magnificent fireplace wall of undulating marble surrounded by threedimensional oak columns. Here, four beautifully detailed club chairs and a curved leather wood ottoman are grounded by a hand-woven rug. Opposite the fireplace, a blown-glass fixture is reflected in the triple mirror suspended above a white lacquer credenza. Another view of the room showcases a wine wall that divides the living space from the dining room. A turn to the left leads to the gathering room with two white sofas, two blue velvet club chairs that are ideally positioned to take in the view of the pool and garden, and pink accessories. An oversized white lacquer cocktail table is supported by a base of greige weathered wood.

The residence’s outdoor loggia is an inviting space with plenty of seating arrangements (both with shade or under the sun) and pleasing views of water.

Adjacent to the gathering room is the dining room with a custom table large enough for 12 guests.

Hanging on a wall, a commissioned triptych by Laura Fayer repeats the bold colors sprinkled throughout the home. An eye-catching smoked glass and metal light fixture crowns the room.

The wife’s study is a jewel of a room lined with a textural wallcovering and elements that include an acrylic and brass desk paired with a quilted white leather chair, a multidimensional brass credenza, and a commissioned painting by Christopher Peter. This vignette is grounded by a whimsical rug marked by spots in pink.

The residence’s club room was designed for tall men, of which there are three in the family. The mood here is masculine with extra deep sofas, large swivel chairs, an oversized TV screen for football games, and a well-stocked wet bar complete with swivel leather barstools and a substantial countertop.

The primary suite features a textural wall reminiscent of ocean waves in varying tones of blue. The curved bed and all furnishings were deliberately kept light and neutral for a serene feel.

A chaise lounge is positioned to enjoy the garden view.

Her bath is a lovely feminine space with clouds of white and silver-gray accentuated by a light fixture of hanging crystals. The oval tub, waterfall bench, and ethereal window treatment all work well together.

commissioned from Vangelis. The goal in this space was to mimic the triple windows that face the front of the house so these pieces could be viewed upon approaching the property. The end of the hallway boasts a colorful, dramatic three-dimensional art piece by Stallman Studio.

The outdoor loggia was designed to have as eclectic and interesting a feeling as the inside.

Here, the designers created a cozy gathering spot on the grassy area so the family and their guests could sit back and enjoy the serene view of the pool and the waterway behind the house.

“This home is truly personalized,” says Rogers-Bolton. “And it’s the perfect Florida escape.”

WHEN A TAMPA COUPLE WITH FOUR active boys decided to renovate their home, their primary goal was to marry the original structure with its new addition. Settled gracefully into the picturesque landscapes of Bayshore Beautiful, a neighborhood known for its proximity to Bayshore Boulevard—one of Tampa’s most coveted locations—the property and its new build-on appear seamless, as though they’ve always been there.

“Our team’s first priority was to make the home feel current yet timeless,” says designer Julianne Hendrickson, whom the homeowners wholeheartedly entrusted to take on the task.

“We repainted the exterior in a warm white and added coastal blue shutters with hints of copper trim at the top. To create a continuous flow throughout, we replaced all the floors with a honed marble for durability and easy cleaning.”

Ideally situated just a stone’s throw from Bayshore Boulevard’s scenic pedestrian walkway, the original 4,467-square-foot structure now boasts 8,807 square feet of under-roof space.

The additional square footage has given the couple and their young boys a much more functional residence. In addition, Hendrickson, who worked alongside project manager Mary Elise Rising and lead designer Toni Jabaay, strategically chose neutral colors and textures to make the home more livable and open.

Bathed in warm white, the foyer creates a wonderfully serene welcome into the house. Its spare design includes a streamlined console table topped with meaningful collectibles and backdropped by a slender mirror that reflects one of of the dining room’s crystal chandeliers.

“The formal dining room centers around an heirloom table that seats 14,” says Hendrickson. “The owners wanted a space to entertain their extended family for holidays and Sunday suppers.” The generational dining table pairs elegantly with low-profile Bernhardt chairs on casters, offering comfy seating for afterdinner lingering.

a secondary sink, desk space, cabinets for snacks and small appliances, and lockers for the kids’ gear.

An expansive butler’s pantry and mudroom behind the kitchen was an absolute must for this family of boys who needed storage for their baseball gear, hockey equipment, and, most importantly, lots of snacks.

There’s also an extra sink and a small desk to keep things clean and organized.

“Tucked between the dining room and kitchen/ living area, a powder bath was designed to emulate a jewel box for this mother of all boys,” says Hendrickson.

“Glamorous, polished brass plumbing, elegant sconces, and marble flooring make this space fit for a queen.”

The kitchen is, of course, the heart of the home, with a casual dining area for everyday meals enhanced with a magnificent circular chandelier. But the real showstoppers appear in the dramatic, black-accented Skara Brae quartz countertops and backsplash amplified with a black island base and range hood.

“The kitchen turned out to be the couple’s most beloved space,” notes Hendrickson. “One of my absolute favorite memories is when the wife texted me that she had signed off on the countertops and was pouring herself a glass of champagne. She had agonized over the bold statement of those countertops, but she will tell you today that it is one of her favorite parts of the home.”

DESIGNER KELLY KAISER-PUTNAM WAS THE FIRST person a New Hampshire businessman called soon after acquiring the ideal beach house in Siesta Key. While the prime gulfside location of the 5,200-square-foot dwelling promised happy days under the sun for the homebuyer and his two teenage kids, the structure itself was in dire need of space planning and personality. Kaiser-Putnam’s approach was to deal with function and layout matters first before turning up the vacation vibes with a cream and white palette that serves as a backdrop for natural textures and bold moments of pattern and color.

On the first floor, the designer opened up the kitchen to enhance its connection to the dining area, a breakfast nook with a window valance covered with Schumacher’s Citrus Garden fabric.

“It’s a vibrant print that livens up what is mostly a clean, white space,” says Kaiser-Putnam. “That motif invites joy into the room.”

As far as surfaces go, the design team relied on wallcoverings for eye-catching statements. In the powder room, it’s red and blue stripes. In the primary bedroom, it’s a mural of blue palm leaves behind the bed. “Large-scale wallpaper applications transport you,” says the designer.

“They make you feel like you are walking into a story.”

In the long, narrow living room, the design story is one of comfort, with an oversized sectional that was custom-made to fit all members of the family at once. The ornamentation here is minimal: roundish wicker side tables by Coastal Living introduce organic sentiments at ground level, while a framed antique Old Glory hangs above the sofa. The rest of the details—from the shiplap boards that go up to the vaulted ceiling to the Currey & Company lamps—nod to the home’s intended coastal vibe and seaside location.

This ethos is evident in the project that first put Watlee Construction on the map. “In 2004 we were hired to build a 7,500-square-foot house in South Martin County, and it was completely custom,” Watley says. “The floor, tongue-and-groove ceiling and millwork were all produced by a mill in Montana. The walls were done in Venetian plaster and the exterior was a coastal with lap siding and a standing-seam metal roof.”

It was featured in numerous publications and launched the firm into fame amongst the custom home market. And of course, the owners adored the end result. Based in Hobe Sound, the Watlee team now brings the same happiness to clients throughout Florida.
