PUBLISHER’S NOTE

One of the questions, I am often asked is, “What are the trends you are seeing in the MEGAN DIPIERO

industry?” I can usually come up with a very specific answer. For this issue, my reply would simply be “change.” With the extra time we have been awarded to spend in our homes, we have all noticed a few (or a lot of) things that need to be tweaked a bit. Whether it is going full tilt and opting for more space, realizing that you have more square footage than you need and downsizing, or that you are just not feeling those kitchen cabinets that were all the rage 10 years ago and going for the total gut job. With all the craziness going on around us, we just want our homes to be the perfect fit, the one place that we can go to close out the world, even if just for a minute, and feel at ease.

Turn the pages and you will see how bright colors are

used to reflect the water and sky, with wood textures, wall treatments, and organic elements that bring us back to the comfort of nature. All of these soothing techniques help us make our homes the retreats we crave.

You will notice that some of the homes featured are not

grand in size, but rather designed for entertaining and comfort, utilizing every inch of indoor and outdoor space for families of all ages.

Filling the pages with beautiful features each issue is a joy

for us to share with you. I hope you will be able to create your own dream home with the resources provided in these pages.

KALEIGH GROVER Publisher, Naples

My father always said, “Make a career out of your hobby and you will always love going to work.” He was right about that, as he was about many things. Mine is “stay passionate.” It works in all aspects of life.

FURNITURE AS ART Furniture can serve a purpose, but it can also ignite the imagination. Art furniture, such as this “Mondrian” white sideboard by Boca do Lobo, looks like a collected object with a global pedigree. This modern classic features a mahogany structure with a variety of doors and drawers in shades of white and gold. High-gloss colored lacquer finishes, mirrors and cut glass, brass handles, and leather details lend a worldly edge and a sense of heritage. bocadolobo.com

ESTELLA FRANSBERGEN’S MULTIMEDIA SCULPTURES CELEBRATE THE HUMAN FORM AND THE GIFTS OF THE EARTH Welaka-based artist Estella Fransbergen

tells a story of cultural

diversity in her sculptures. Born in South Africa and educated in the Netherlands before settling down in Florida, she mixes the diverse influences of her own narrative to create multimedia female torsos “dressed” with feathers, branches, leaves, and gemstones like rubies, pearls, diamonds, and crystals— all materials that speak to her love of nature. Her depictions of the human form are rendered in clay, often with primitive firing techniques that echo her South African roots. “The beauty of the colors in the clay is created by the intensity of the fire,” she states. “Each torso comes from the fire with a uniqueness all its own.” estellafransbergen.com

Every Detail Counts FROM SKYLINES TO GROUNDLINES, ARCHITECTURAL LAND DESIGN SHOWCASES THE BEAUTY OF PROPERLY PLACED PLANTS text by

Landscape architect Christian Andrea founded Architectural Land Design, Inc., in 1994, growing the company to what it is today.

KIM MOSLEY

above:

Designing a landscape creates a story — a work of art that begins with a plan. “Our aim is to create outstanding, innovative, environmentally responsible landscapes that give value and enjoyment to clients,” landscape architect Christian Andrea says.

Born in Switzerland, raised in the Midwest, and traveling frequently throughout Europe, Andrea

developed an appreciation early on for the skill and craftsmanship that is devoted to the exterior spaces. Having founded Architectural Land Design (ALD) in 1994, Andrea actively collaborates with his clients’ design team to create the vision and bring dreams to reality. With a focus on projects primarily in Southwest Florida — specializing in high-end residential properties, commercial design, and community development — it is clear to see that each design project Andrea takes on is unique. And every detail counts.

Every Detail Counts Q A

What is your design philosophy? Developing a good program and

understanding of the client’s needs, then trying to achieve it. Much of our focus is based on spatial planning, use of space, views, how a client uses a space, then ultimately what kind of feeling you are trying to create from that space.

Q

Every landscape architect seems to

be known for one signature trademark. What do you consider to be your most recognizable?

“When it comes to planting designs, we find we landscape the sky, then the ground

A

The only concept I would consider

to be a signature is our focus on the rear

plane,” Andrea says. “It’s the trees that create the sense of community and history to an area.

yard with water features and hardscape

So, it is important to factor in the right plant and the right place.”

elements. We think the rear yard area, pool

and patio is the heart and soul of the home.

Virtual capabilities not only allow ALD to communicate with clients at any time, they also

provide a platform for the firm to volunteer its services for special projects and groups, and to mingle with other likeminded people passionate about landscape. aldinc.net

Q

How do you juxtapose your designs

into the varied architectural landscape of Florida?

A

It’s relatively easy. The architectural

plan, the client, and the actual surrounding environment

inspire

our

architectural

landscape designs. We then bridge the varying elements to create a cohesive design.

Q

How much does landscaping play a

role in the overall design of a home?

A

Surprisingly, a lot. There is something

about landscape that sets a tone with the various potential personalities a planting design can bring to a project. It can be tropical and casual; it can be shaded with mature canopy trees and gardens. It can be manicured to perfection, or laid back and natural. They all reflect the personality of the owner.

left:

ALD’s designs are harmonious with the surroundings and express the taste of the owner. A dash of style blends with a trace of tropical attitude to create these one-of-a-kind outdoor areas perfect for relaxation and entertainment.

ORNARE’S LUXE, CUSTOMIZED CLOSET SYSTEMS TAKE WARDROBE ORGANIZATION TO THE NEXT LEVEL TEXT BY

MARINA BROWN

Busy professionals who

are meticulous about good organization are the

inspiration for the elegantly sleek designs created by bespoke cabinetmaker Ornare.

Founded in São Paulo, Brazil, 33 years ago, Ornare produces closets, kitchens,

baths, and high-end cabinetry for distinguished homes worldwide. With experienced designers to fashion custom systems with the firm’s signature Brazilian aesthetic, even dressing rooms can become environments of self-expression.

Nowhere is the need for individuality more essential than in closets created

specifically for his and her storage needs. Ornare, as part of its West-East Collection, has introduced two new lines that seem ideal for feminine and masculine specifications. right: Elegant hardware is the finishing touch in showcase-like cabinets. Glass doors serve a dual purpose: exhibiting wardrobe for visual impact, and infusing a feeling of lightness to the space.

HIS & HERS

Inspired by values found in Asian culture, “essentiality” is expressed in a

modern technical construct with the Ikigai line, combining a light frame system of minimalist design with fine-grained woods. Ornare designers collaborate with clients to create a system with spare linear elements, which can either showcase clothing through glass doors or cache it behind nearly invisible panels. Integrating lighting, center islands, or a lady’s vanity allows for a full spectrum of possibilities.

The man of the house may find the industrial aesthetic of his closet’s

aluminum “skeleton” appealing. Suited to a masculine taste, the Mech line presents exposed metal joints, swing or sliding doors, and modular bookshelves and islands, for a combination that turns the utilitarian into the refined.

From integrated handles to custom jewelry drawers and cabinetry crafted

for today’s modern tastes, each of Ornare’s innovative concepts can be adapted for feminine and masculine aesthetics, proving that not all closets are created equal — but are equally impressive. ornare.com left:

Clients have the option to showcase clothing behind glass doors or organize it behind exquisitely textured or upholstered panels, as exemplified in the “Ikigai” line.

KITCHEN

CLIVE CHRISTIAN FURNITURE GIVES KITCHEN DESIGN A BESPOKE TOUCH FOR AN ELEVATED EXPRESSION OF BOTH FORM AND FUNCTION

A kitchen isn’t only a place to cook. It is also a spot for friends to gather for drinks and conversation as dinner is being prepared, a place for families to bond, and a showpiece at the heart of the home. Often open to living and dining areas, kitchens have become models of high design, where form and function get equal billing and craftsmanship is of the utmost value.

It makes sense, then, that kitchens are increasingly being designed by traditional

furniture companies. Clive Christian Furniture, a 40-year-old British firm known for its luxurious bespoke pieces and artisanal craftsmanship, has become a global leader in statement kitchens. Imbuing spaces with what they term “British luxury,” the experts at Clive Christian fuse the hand-crafted qualities of yesteryear with modern sensibilities to achieve environments that are truly one of a kind. Unfussy yet full of character, the pieces in The Devon, The Elliot and Hillcrest collections are a study in clean lines with a glamorous twist. Dana Gibson is fearless when it comes to designing with color. As an artist and designer, she has always been attracted to color and has developed an appreciation for the joys of living in bright, vibrant spaces. Art and design is a family affair: Her great aunt, Nancy Lancaster, was pivotal in the development of the design firm Colefax and Fowler and the English country look. Her great grandfather, Charles Dana Gibson, was a wellknown artist and satirist. Gibson’s creative genes and personal experience have shaped her aesthetic, which is evident in her painterly textile prints as well as furniture designs, wall coverings, and home accessories. danagibson.com

Mountain High A BOLD DESIGN PROGRAM MAKES THE GREENBRIER ONE OF AMERICA’S MOST BELOVED RESORTS

photography by

When Carleton Varney was

text by DAPHNE NIKOLOPOULOS DOROTHY DRAPER & COMPANY, INC.

hired as a design assistant to

Dorothy Draper in 1961, one of his first assignments was to accompany the legendary decorator to The Greenbrier resort in the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia. She’d been redecorating the property since 1946, charged with “de-beige-ing” it in favor of happy color, pattern, and texture.

Draper’s aesthetic still reigns at “America’s Resort.” But her

protégé—now an iconic designer in his own right—has reinterpreted it for the 21st century. Like Draper, Varney doesn’t shy away from bold color, such as the Thomas Jefferson blue used in the Upper Lobby, or the Lobby Bar’s hand-painted red damask walls by muralist Ferko Lakatos. Neither is he afraid of mixing patterns; in fact, he delights in it. In the Clock Lobby, for instance, he blends wide blue- and whitestriped walls with a rhododendron print on the sofa and a leaf-print carpet. In a State Suite bedroom, he mixes a Versailles print with chintz and plaid. It’s all in the interest of entertaining the eye and making guests feel like they’ve arrived somewhere extraordinary.

Of special note are The Greenbrier’s carpets. Designed by

Varney, these range from sedate, classic prints to bigger-than-life patterns with flowers, ginger jars, scrolls, and medallions. Many

“There’s a bit of magic in every corner and corridor at The Greenbrier,” says Varney, who has

been working on the property’s design for 60 years with no sign of slowing down. He personally leads the Dorothy Draper Decorating Weekend at the resort, guiding would-be decorators through the one-of-a-kind design fantasy that is The Greenbrier. greenbrier.com

Design showrooms, galleries, and talent under one roof is the modus operandi of The Collective, Naples’ growing design hub. Spread across three floors, The Collective is an amalgam of businesses catering to design professionals and those who seek to build, renovate, or simply add some pizzazz to their home decor. Home furnishings, windows, art galleries, closet design, lighting, tile, and appliances are among the businesses found in The Studio on the second level. The third level is the headquarters of Kurtz Homes, and will soon be home to a local architecture firm, as well as designers and a custom cabinetry shop. Randy Kurtz talks to Florida Design Naples about The Collective’s evolution and what comes next for Naples’ burgeoning interior design resource.

Q A

Can you describe The Collective’s design philosophy? The initial design philosophy was to create a design hub

for the trade, locals, and visitors—a place where inspiration and convenience merge. From the foundation to the door knobs, all

design central Casa Italia offers the latest and most innovative fine Italian furnishings from the most exclusive manufacturers and designers in Italian luxury design.

aspects of the home building, remodeling, and designing process can be found here.

Q A

What trends are you interested in bringing to the market?

The trend of collaboration. When those in the construction

and design [industries] collaborate, it is reflected in the home— where all elements complement one another.

Q A

Give us a sense of what we can find at The Collective.

The showrooms include Unique Wood Floor Co., Casa Italia,

Method & Concept, AlliKriste Custom Cabinetry, Premiere Systems, Montanna Design Associates. Coming soon to the ground floor are Sun Mountain Custom Doors, The Luxury Bed Collection, and GWT Outdoors. Twenty mini showrooms feature custom hardware, fireplaces, garage doors, windows, pools, shading systems, and custom limestone, marble, and woodworking. All tenants and all those in the trade can reserve The Studio’s conference room for meetings with business partners and their clientele.

Q

What experience do you want people to take away after

visiting The Collective?

A

We hope that whether someone is building from the ground

up, remodeling their home, or simply looking for a refresh, they will be inspired in their mission, empowered in their efforts, and find ease in the process.

The entertainment area is a picture of harmony. The painted metal and glass top occasional table from Marge Carson is “a very simplistic yet interesting piece,” says Kim Collins. An open-block bleachedmahogany side table lends modernism. Drapery from Romo Katsura Sheer Zaffre features a sheer burnout fabric that pops with shades of blue, gray, and aqua.

WHAT STARTED AS A challenge evolved into a masterpiece with three bedrooms, five baths and more than 7,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor living space. Referred by the developer of the high-rise building, designers Kim Collins and Alina Dolan drafted a new floor plan to merge two units into one large home. “It started with two very linear spaces that we unified together to create a natural flow,” says Dolan. “Having to work around the structural elements was very challenging,” adds Collins. To dress up the support columns, the designers layered them with beveled bronze mirror panels—creating a warm reflection of the Gulf. The integrity of architecture is captured in the home’s coffered and tray ceilings. Subtle LED downlights are sprinkled throughout, offering effective and flattering illumination. The designers deemed the living room as the entertainment area, which became one of the most important spaces of the home. “We wanted everything unified for family and friends to join together while having individual areas for recreation along with intimate seating sections,” Dolan explains. Here, guests can play the piano or some pool, enjoy the views and gather together for

conversation. The backdrop is defined by warm neutral shades of gray and white, with pops of blue and green found in the drapes, accent pillows, and area rug pulling in all the colors from the outside. The deep rich wood floors are distinctive, with a cream-colored washed cerused treatment that displays a hand-scraped pattern to highlight the beautiful wood grains. The designers commissioned a wool and silk color-block rug from artist Benson-Cobb to contrast the dark floor and bring in another layer of color. Nestled in the living area of the room, four swivel chairs from Theodore Alexander fill the space with charisma. “They have a very soft subtle texture in mink gray with a silver sheen undertone along with a dark wood trim,” Collins says. Compelling textures play a key role across the room, with metallic nuances integrated within the fabrics. Light fixtures from Fine Art dazzle without detracting from the water views. “We wanted interesting pieces that are all unique while working together in harmony,” the designers explain. In the center, gold and alabaster modified lanterns dangle over the space; nearby, two linen drum shade floor lamps from Visual Comfort add dimension. Drama and sophistication carry on to the dining room with an oversized oval coffered ceiling that sits in the center of the square grids, becoming the focal point of the space. The dining table from Baker features a walnut inlay top that rests upon a see-through cut-out base with gold metal side panels that display an artful scroll design. Eight upholstered wing chairs are cloaked in a white and cream textured fabric, creating dimension with its high-low pile and contrasting with the dark wood legs. The credenza, from Alfonso Marina, is a work of art with a chalky geometric overlay that accents the rich wood of the base underneath. “It’s a statement piece,” say the designers. What was once just an idea and a dream became a joy for the homeowners and a proud project for designers Kim Collins and Alina Dolan.

Organic elements are sprinkled throughout the dining space, including a wool hand-knotted rug. “It adds a lot of depth and texture to the room,” Collins says of the rug. With its palette of blues, greens and saffron gold, a painting titled Emerging Dream by artist Alexys Henry introduces bold hues to the area’s color story. “It is very abstract with an organic feel that hints at the idea of a landscape design,” says Alina Dolan.

Inspired by Zen CLEAN LINES AND A NEUTRAL PALETTE ENHANCE THE MINIMALIST VIBE THAT TRANSCENDS THIS MODERN ZEN-STYLE ESTATE ALONG THE SPARKLING BLUE COAST OF NAPLES

LISA LOVETTO “I have a passion for natural forms and textures, which help to shape and understand the spaces we create in the rhythms of our lives.”

ADORNED ALONG THE WATER’S EDGE OF ONE of the most exclusive communities in all of Naples, this 16,397-square-foot Port Royal residence is a beacon of pure, simplistic luxury. This stately home exudes a mature yet modern take on what it means to embrace serenity, which was interior designer Lisa Lovetto’s inspiration throughout the design process. After having worked with the homeowners previously, Lovetto understood their desire for the home to be an escape; one that is easily shared amongst groups of family and friends. “Every project is truly different, but I always follow one basic principle, which is to listen,” Lovetto says. “I always listen to the client with an open mind and an open heart … for every home has its own story to tell.”

Detailed woodwork crowning the front entry complements the Spanish black stone that wraps an elegant exterior water feature and carries through to the entry of the home. Architects John Cooney and Irma Sefa developed a plan that nods to the timeless tropical style of Naples, decorating the exterior in Spanish black stone, off-white limestone, and mahogany accents. The architects created a strong vertical emphasis in the home’s front entryway, offering a grand and majestic impression that is softened by the accompaniment of wood and stone details. The elemental touches of the exterior play a pivotal role in the design concept, embracing the earthy materials that heighten the sense of calm before stepping inside. To create cohesion from the exterior to the interior, the design team strategically extended the use of Spanish limestone—a personal favorite of the homeowners—through to the interior entryway. Cascading the stone in a unique pattern draws the eye toward the rear of the home, highlighting a breathtaking view framed by a floor-to-ceiling window at the end of the hallway.

Natural elements are in focus throughout the breakfast area and stairway, while artist Kerry Armstrong’s Only A Fool in Love adds a splash of vibrancy. Hudson Furniture’s 42-inch-high floating bar is stationed just beyond the stairway. G&W Craftsman’s dining table and Colección Alexandra chairs gracefully pose in the breakfast area accompanied by matching barstools.

Lovetto and the homeowners share a passion for Asian antiques. So when they agreed upon a modern Zen vibe for the interior, the ideas came flooding out. The living and dining areas share a large expanse, allowing for continuity between the spaces. Custom area rugs from Davis and Davis are used to delineate the areas, while a one-of-a-kind, live edge walnut dining table with a cast bronze base takes center stage. Lovetto confesses that her biggest challenge with this project was finding a light fixture that was deserving of placement over this exceptional piece, so she designed a fixture that imitates the cast bronze base that resembles tree branches, marrying the two together. Perfect for entertaining, the open concept of the main living spaces allows for large gatherings of guests to comfortably enjoy all of the facets this area has to offer. Elegant comfort is evident while relaxing in Colección Alexandra’s champagne silk armchairs that easily pair with Dakota Jackson’s modern black cocktail table. the mahogany ceiling treatment, serenity prevails. Granting access to the kitchen and breakfast area are two 12-foot pivoting glass doors, fabricated by Belt and designed specifically for this space by Sefa and Lovetto. A round custom dining table and linear lighting are used to create a sense of diversity utilizing different shapes while the streamlined look of the light fixture mixed with the waterfall edges of UMI’s blue granite countertops in the kitchen adds a youthfulness to this shared space. Florida Stairwork’s glass-railed stairway ascends to the second level, illuminated by a Terzani chandelier whose 29 pendants hang at varying lengths. In the guest suite, the custom bed designed by Lovetto and fabricated by Michael Schmidt Custom Interiors, takes center stage. Upholstered in a delicate green and blue silk, an antique Chinese panel from Midori Gallery provided the inspiration for this tranquil retreat.

“We utilized contrasting facades and varying rooflines to draw the eye along the exterior of what we like to describe as a ‘modern tropical’ architectural style; drawing from Bali as our inspiration to create a grand but warm welcome,” says architect John Cooney.

A cozy retreat sits just off the main quarters, beckoning for someone to kick their heels up and enjoy the warm sun that cascades through an array of windows. This guest suite comforts with tones of green and blue, and a custom-designed bed upholstered around an antique Chinese panel from Midori. Nearby, an office, designed to feel clean and uncluttered, sports a Calacatta Borghini and walnut desk designed by Lovetto and manufactured to the homeowner’s specifications. Having an outdoor entertainment space to stun was a must-have for the homeowners. Cooney and Sefa delivered a jaw-dropping oasis wrapped in limestone wall treatments and shellstone decking. A fire table and an assortment of Dedon furnishings decorate the loggia and pool area with modern touches that are interconnected with the interior design scheme, leaving a euphoric and Zen-like aura that blurs the boundaries between inside and out.

south of Naples, Marco Island is a barrier island first developed in the 1960s. Today it’s a high-end residential getaway teeming with wildlife and long sandy beaches, perfect for one couple originally from Kansas, homeowners Jackie and Paul Zwillenberg. Since childhood, their families had been bringing them to Florida on vacation. “The Sunshine State” meant holidays—so when they met, married, and started a family of their own, it seemed only logical that the tradition continue. That’s when interior architect and designer Kathy Adam received a concise and to-the-point email: “We’re building a house, wondered if you could help us?” The couple had seen a project Kathy had designed in Saint Barthelemy. They liked the pure white lines and the designer’s relaxed, luxurious signature style. The magazine cutting led them to Kathy and, to their surprise, they now lived in the same city — London. Adam Design has built a solid reputation for architectural design. “All my work is about symmetry and that’s why it’s always so restful, and appears spacious and flows,” Kathy says.

Jackie and Paul knew what they wanted. The practicality of them all being Londonbased had clear advantages and the trio launched into an exciting two-and-a-half-year transatlantic adventure. For someone who usually works in the UK, Kathy’s immediate challenge was to make a list of artisans and contacts in Florida that were up to the job and could deliver on the high standard that she demands. “I went straight to the design district in Miami, opened some accounts and got talking to people,” she says. To ensure the desired level of continuity and coherence, Kathy worked closely with builder Jim Christopher, whom she praises for his willingness to adapt and integrate her vision into the build. “I’m not easy,” she says. “I want everything to be perfect. Jim was a bit wary at first, but he came on board and was up for a challenge. No problems, only solutions.” The house forms a courtyard around an outdoor area overlooking the pool to the bay beyond. Inside, Kathy’s trademark symmetry makes for a space in which guests feel instantly at ease. The predominantly white interior finds variations in materiality: white ceramic-tile flooring, white quartz kitchen island and table, and chairs made to measure in perfect proportion. Tying it all together and extending between the diverse volumes is the

Integrated within the living room, the bar area was inspired by a Patagonia Exotic stone slab that illuminates with backlighting. An open-shelf bookcase from Alli Kriste designed for the front of the bar disguises it from the living room view, and barstools by Hamilton Conte emulate the organic shape of tree stumps to further bring the outside in.

SITUATED NEXT TO a cypress preserve in Mediterra—one of Naples’ most exquisite gated communities—this 5,806-square-foot home is surrounded by silk floss trees, a plumeria tree, and a mix of bamboo varieties and pines. It’s a setting the homeowners were intent on celebrating from the moment they laid eyes on the property. “We chose to buy in Mediterra because of the neighborhood’s Audubon aesthetic,” says homeowner Robin Schiller. “Ever since I was a young girl, I have felt a harmony being in nature. As we approached designing this home, we knew we wanted to embrace the landscape around us. Our style is clean and classic, and we wanted to create a sense of outdoor/indoor, where the views themselves became art.” The home’s entrance has the feel of a secluded oasis, with strategically placed foliage and discreet privacy walls.

Rob Herscoe and Michael Hajjar, principals at Herscoe Hajjar Architects, met the clients a few years prior to the start of the project, and the homeowners followed the firm’s work extensively so they could feel confident with their creative direction—an essential element to a successful design process. “The architectural style is a contemporary version of a Florida courtyard home,” says Herscoe. “The property’s natural vegetation links seamlessly to the preserve, so there is no hard designation between the two, which allows the home to feel built within a larger landscape. The entrance is accessed through a gate within a walled courtyard that allows the typical ceremonial front yard to become an active environment for entertaining as well as a private breakout from the room fronting the home.” “Secondary entrances give access to the master suite from a separate garage so the homeowners can choose how to navigate the ever-changing daily flow of people to and from the house,” adds Hajjar.

“The key to making a house work for a family of different personalities and needs is to not force crosspath circulation that invades privacy.” One of the main challenges for the architects was to demonstrate to the homeowner’s association at Mediterra how their design would work within the neighborhood. The typical street presentation of most homes incorporates an obvious embellished front entrance element. “For this property, we wanted a humble entry sequence that utilized a more mysterious approach of sequential processing that courtyard style provided,” says Herscoe. “And it truly worked, as passersby are continuously trying to see beyond the gates of this unique home.” Herscoe and Hajjar teamed up with Naples designer Judith Liegeois, owner of Judith Liegeois Designs. Because they all had worked together on many projects in the past, the collaboration was effortless. “Our design concept began when Robin recalled a fond memory of a childhood friend’s

home,” explains Liegeois. “It was a perfect California mid-century-style home with large windows that invited the outdoors in, which became our ultimate design goal. To do this, we approached every detail [with that intent], from the color of the draperies to how the light is cast through the chandeliers and sconces. Every single element in the home speaks to nature in one way or another.” One source of inspiration came from Schiller’s love of The Jumby Bay Resort in Antigua, where the rooms have a distinctive inside/outside feel. This greatly influenced the master bath, where Schiller wanted to emulate an outdoor vibe. Another was reflected in her experience growing up in New York City. In her 20s, Schiller often found herself hanging out with friends in the lounge of

the Mercer Hotel. “I loved the mood of that space,” she says. “I am drawn to Christian Liaigre’s design. He designed the Mercer Hotel interiors, among other New York favorites of mine. My favorite piece in the entire home is the Liaigre dining room table. The slight peek of red on the legs is sexy, like a woman’s shoe.” Schiller relished the time spent with Liegeois on their shopping trips, absorbing new knowledge about design, design history, and art from Liegeois. “It is truly a gift to live in a home designed and built by these most talented individuals,” Schiller says. “Still today, I find myself smiling at the most thoughtful, small details around the house and the sightlines that Rob and Michael were so passionate about incorporating. It was a great collaboration between builder, architect, and designer.”

WITH ITS LUSH LANDSCAPES AND stately sites linked by deep coves and winding waterways, Aqualane Shores continues to be one of Naples’ most sought after neighborhoods. The interior design team of Randi Scott and Liz Brown partnered with builder Matt Knauf to create this newly renovated 4,786-square-foot coastal transitional home. “There was a great team effort,” Knauf says. “We all worked hand in hand with the homeowners to accomplish their coastal vision.” Looking for change, the homeowners were engaged in the design process and knew exactly what they wanted. They were seeking a casual coastal feel with clean, contemporary interiors to fill their airy new home. Scott and Brown incorporated unexpected elements into their design. “We implemented a soft, yet unmistakable color palette throughout paired with stunning millwork details,” Scott says. “Each room speaks to one another.”

right: All aspects of the front exterior had rounded Mediterranean finishes. Builder Matt Knauf took all of those out. The front, round columns, as well as the tall arched entry, were removed. Clean, straight lines on the entry and front door were created to exude a more welcoming feel to this 4,786-square-foot coastal transitional home.

“This project started as a simple facelift and progressed to a full renovation,” interior designer Randi Scott says. “We aimed to keep the traditional bones of the home and updated them with a coastal flair.”

Faced with a variety of spatial challenges, the design team put their creativity to work to come up with unique details that did not encroach into the actual livable space. This was a renovation, so the biggest challenge was reworking this previously outdated and chopped up home to a functional and practical floor plan that would withstand the test of time. Rounded windows and exterior finishes were removed and replaced with clean, modern options. “We took classic elements and altered them to fit the new space,” Brown says. Although the foyer is open to the main living areas, the designers wanted to make it stand out. A soft blue grasscloth introduces the space’s coastal vibe, where a beaded mirror circles the wall above a hand-painted faux parchment console, and white plaster sconces add balance. Legno Bastone’s wide-plank wood flooring leads the way to a wet bar that opens to the adjacent spaces in order to achieve a great flow. Low-backed counter stools nestle under the driftwood hues of the bar topped in a backlit Crystallo quartzite. In the great room, the design team struck a balance between high-end functional furnishings and the coastal color scheme. The dining area overlooks the loggia and water views, adding a reflective blue tint to the space centered with an expansive, solid wood table finished in a cerused above:

gray tone. Side chairs are covered in a durable and comfortable navy fabric, while the host chairs are backed in a fun stripe for added detail. The oversized cast bronze chandelier formed to resemble branches provides an illuminating focal point. The central stairway—with its custom-designed baluster in a flat black metal and its white oak handrail and treads—elevates the classic coastal look while embracing the pared down aesthetic of the kitchen. Here, white cabinetry is timeless. A pair of glass-globed pendants hangs above the driftwood glazed island. Woven rope counter stools add a touch of organic texture. Designed as a space for family and friends to gather, the living area exudes a casual yet sophisticated ambiance. A two-tiered cocktail table joins a spacious sectional upholstered in sandy tones. Various shades of blue from the area rug connect with clean-lined lounge chairs sporting a whimsical blue and white stripe. More hues of blue pop in the assortment of accent pillows and accessories. “We achieved a soft contemporary, transitional style throughout the great room with a neutral palette, wood elements, and splashes of blue,” Scott says.

A true oasis, the outdoor living areas rank as favorite spots for fun and relaxation. The loggia consists of a comfortable hearthside social grouping and bar-height dining. “We added stained tongue-and-groove on the ceiling and flanking both sides of the fireplace,” Knauf says. “The fireplace and TV area along with a brand new outdoor kitchen were part of the remodel.” The soft gray and blue tones speak perfectly to the interior, while the light stone on the pool deck makes the patio light and bright. Chaise lounges with lively patterned accent pillows recline poolside. Weaving a casual motif interspersed with purpose, this home sports functionality for family gatherings, a color palette supportive of a carefully curated interior scheme, and relaxed spaces that celebrate Florida’s coastal lifestyle. “This project truly was a creative dream from start to finish—from the construction to the furnishings,” Brown says. “The clear design vision, and clients’ trust, made for a perfect combination to produce a gorgeous finished product.”

STEPS FROM THE BEACH AND BUSTLING DOWNTOWN, A TWO-STORY OLD NAPLES HOME WAS DESIGNED TO BLEND INTO ITS SURROUNDINGS WHILE MAXIMIZING NATURAL LIGHT AND MERGING INDOOR AND OUTDOOR LIVING

EVEN BEFORE DESIGNING THEIR DREAM home in Old Naples, the homeowners knew its corner lot a block from the beach and quick walk to downtown checked all their boxes. Though the setting was idyllic, the location on busy Gulf Shore Boulevard was complicated: they wanted their custom London Bay Home to face west to maximize Gulf views, yet parking had to be on the home’s south side, not the street, per city code. Finally, an understated yet grand pedestrian arrival was imperative, since the couple loves to entertain and wanted the first impression to be special. “The entire western façade is a garden element where you have no sense you’re in an urban environment,” says landscape architect Christian Andrea, principal of Architectural Land Design, Inc. Steve Miller, London Bay Homes vice president concurs, “The S-curve walk that carves through the

gardens was something our client envisioned as part of the experience approaching the pergola entrance.” One customary element is missing from their two-story, 5,553-square-foot, fourbedroom, four-and-a-half bathroom home: a front door. London Bay Homes with MHK Architecture and Planning created a single pivot glass door to serve as an unconventional front door adjacent to four-panel Weiland lift-and-slide living room doors. Level indoor and outdoor floors ensured a seamless transition between kitchen, great room and outdoor living spaces. Outside, the couple wanted their home—which features 2,000 square feet of outdoor living space and pool—to have an Old Naples vibe. Inside, they wanted coastal comfort. Romanza Interior Design senior director Jennifer Stevens achieved its crisp white-on-white design using Benjamin Moore’s Snowfall White paint, with pops of blue in multiple shades, including the wine room. Directly across from the home’s entrance, the three-sided nook painted in a dramatic deep blue and gold beckons guests with glass shelves that display sparkling crystal. From there, the home’s natural flow leads into the kitchen, where a full-height black soapstone splash and countertops flank a Lacanche range and front a 12-foot-long marble waterfall island. At first blush, the furniture’s light palette may seem fussy, but Stevens chose Lee Industries “Burbank Ivory” sofa fabrics and blue “Alaska Mist” for the room’s club chairs for their ease of care. A simple staircase leading to bedroom suites, upstairs lounge, terrace and owner’s office— all with Gulf views—was one of the home’s most complicated features. “Engineering that stair was critical to keep it open and achieve the floating element, plus we installed two glass panels on the landings so you have this beautiful transparency with natural light streaming in during the day and dramatic illuminating effects at night,” Stevens says.

WHEN WENDY BERRY, interior designer and principal of W Design Interiors—based in Naples and Chagrin Falls, Ohio—was charged with designing this four-bedroom model home, she was directed not to do a typical beach home. “We didn’t use shiplap or anything cottagey or beachy and made it more modern and minimal,” Berry says. “This unit could be in Chicago or New York. We achieved the Zen-like feel through natural products such as hardwoods, clean lines, and geometric shapes.” Originally inhabited by the Florida Seminole Indians, the area is known for magnificent views and surreal sunsets. The home boasts spectacular

One of the more dramatic elements in the home is the highly reflective, lacquered, nine-foot-high ceiling that creates an umbrella of light over the great room and makes the ceilings feel taller. Creating it was a 15-step process, but worth the effort to bring sparkle and reflectivity into the space. Underfoot, European white oak flooring provides an anchor of warmth and beauty. “For color, we used a calm neutral color palette of cream, white, black, brown, and a little woodsy green. Everything we did is in different combinations and repetitions, going from dark to light and different textures. There is a little of the expected and a lot of the unexpected,” the designer explains. 152 FLORIDA DESIGN’S NAPLES EDITION 5-2

The elegant rug under the furnishings is fabricated from a cream and charcoal chevron-patterned needlepoint wool, whose geometric lines complement the shapes in the room. “Most of the day, a large covered terrace outside the great room shelters the home from direct sunlight but allows a nice amount of light and sun into the home,” Berry says. Different shades of white in the kitchen create an especially interesting design. A high-gloss,

pillowed, and glazed tile backsplash adds dimension to the flat, white cabinetry. The only dining area in the home is next to the kitchen and leads out to the terrace. Featuring an armless banquette placed against a wood feature wall, the vignette is completed by dining chairs inspired by mid-century modern design. “I went out of my way to delineate the kitchen and the eating area by continuing the same high-gloss panels from the great room into the dropped kitchen ceiling,” Berry adds. “It contrasts sharply against the dark wood ceiling in the eating area. It also helps to create three separate spaces in the large, open-concept home.” The custom, dark-stained walnut bump-out housing the TV created an architectural detail for the den, which does not have a Gulf view. White walls and the custom cream sectional sofa counterbalance the dark wood. The fabric on the two queen-sized beds in the guest bedroom drove the room’s design. 154 FLORIDA DESIGN’S NAPLES EDITION 5-2

“We pulled inspiration for the headboards from a hotel in New York and the bedroom’s entire design was built around the headboards,” the designer says.

far left: A happy vibe runs through the nautical-inspired den. Built as a fourth bedroom, it could also serve as an art studio or office space. The cerused coffee table from Taracea adds a sleek touch.

Layered in textures, the headboard and rails are upholstered in the same fabric. Knotted throws repeat the bedding colors in a different texture. Organic textures and natural fibers inform the bedside table and the woven chandelier. Gray-green wallpaper from Schumacher enlivens the powder room and provides the primary color palette, which is also seen on pale gray cabinetry and quartz countertops. In the master suite, dark-stained strips of walnut panels lead the eye out to impressive Gulf views. The ultra-modern, rich walnut headboard wall features a backlit ledge that stands out against an intricately textured wallpaper. “When designing a master bedroom, I think of the finest hotel or spa and design serene and calm spaces,” the designer explains. Berry thoroughly enjoyed designing this home, in part because the developer gave the design team a free rein. “I love this house,” Berry says. “I could live here.”

SANCTUARY ONE COUPLE’S FOREVER HOME IS AN ELEGANT BLEND OF THEIR COSMOPOLITAN PAST AND COASTAL PRESENT

158 FLORIDA DESIGN’S NAPLES EDITION 5-2

Lisa Davenport_Sanctuary_NP52.indd 158

LISA DAVENPORT “Design is not only about creating experiences but also about generating environments. Environments that set the stage for cherished memories to be made that become our life stories.”

AFTER YEARS OF TRAVELING south to care for elderly family members in Naples, a feisty Northeastern couple found themselves falling in love with the town and its way of life. So when the duo retired from their jobs in government and education, they built a fourbedroom, six-bathroom coastal contemporary home where they could spend the rest of their years. “They are art collectors, and really wanted a place where they could entertain,” says designer Lisa Davenport of LDD Interiors. “And this place was built for that. It’s one-floor, with barrier-free design and lots of wide-open spaces and great room-to-room flow. It would be great for big New Year’s Eve parties.” But as keen as the couple was to forge a fresh start, they still wanted some style reminders of where they had been. They called on Davenport to deliver an interior that fused their urban sensibilities with their new, laid-back lifestyle. “The couple wanted to bring in glitz and glamour, and a Northern palette,” Davenport says. “So it was tricky at times to make sure we were weaving together these styles in a way that worked.” interior design LISA DAVENPORT, LDD INTERIORS, NAPLES, FL builder SCOTT KISH, KTS HOMES, NAPLES, FL landscape architect ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN STUDIO, NAPLES, FL text PAIGE BOWERS photography DIANA TODOROVA, ESTERO, FL

“One of the first things the couple told me was ‘Please, no gray and white,’” Lisa Davenport says. An espresso-hued wooden front door and window trim imbue the otherwise unadorned front of the almost 4,100-squarefoot home with warmer tonal value and character.

2/3/21 9:39 AM

The room’s brown leather furniture has an iridescence to it, Davenport says, “so it goes from sort of a blah brown to a sexy shimmer, which is a little bit edgy.” The reclining sofa’s hue complements the inlaid wood in the shellstone floor.

160 FLORIDA DESIGN’S NAPLES EDITION 5-2

Lisa Davenport_Sanctuary_NP52.indd 160

2/1/21 2:54 PM

Throughout the home, the color palette looks like it has been plucked from a penthouse in New York City. Earthy browns and taupes mingle with creamy whites and pops of aqua, both grounding the rooms and tying them to the blue skies and nature outside. Stainless steel accents provide a cool, contemporary element, while walnut tabletops and cabinetry warm the spaces and give them a cozy, New England flair. The rooms are all architectural edges and effortless luxury, a blend that seems counterintuitive on paper, but in person makes total sense. Consider the great room with its easy-but-modern brown leather furniture and clean-lined stainless steel tables that could hold anything from the latest

below: “Powder rooms are places where you can really have fun,” Davenport says. She brought the 10-foot-high walls down to earth by installing crown moulding two feet from the ceiling and painting everything above it a rich navy blue. An oversized, scalloped chrome light fixture brings additional weight to the ceiling, while the wallpaper is an intricately sewn mix of banana leaves and crumpled paper.

Lisa Davenport_Sanctuary_NP52.indd 161

2/1/21 2:54 PM

“This kitchen countertop is the drama queen that has to be the center of attention,” Davenport says. “Everything else is a beautiful complement.” Two-toned iridescent cabinets, painted glass subway tile backsplashes, and grounding black elements such as bar stools and other fixtures come together to create a glamorous place to sip wine and snack as the main course is being prepared.

162 FLORIDA DESIGN’S NAPLES EDITION 5-2

Davenport pulled blues from the kitchen island’s countertop into the upholstery on the dining room chairs, and the portable bar. A walnut table and chair bases brings warmth to the room, which has a gorgeous view of the outside.

bestseller, to a tray full of cocktails. A twisted wooden sculpture with a high-gloss finish, a turquoise chair, and other collectibles make the room an inviting place to entertain. Although a mounted flat-screen television is there for an evening of Netflix on the reclining couch, glass doors open to offer easy access to the outdoor pool area and its evening breezes. “One of the things I find in tropical climates is that people will try to fill every square inch of their pool enclosure with tile and stone,” Davenport says. Her solution was to make the area less stark, by bringing in greenery and wood, “so it would feel more New England–like.” Inside, the large kitchen and dining room space is ideally designed for entertaining. A quartzite fusion counter on the kitchen island provides a chic focal point for the space, while comfortable black leather barstools ground the room and offer a comfortable perch for wine-drinking guests. “These are some of the most comfortable barstools,” Davenport says. “One of the clients said that the chairs had to pass the ‘fanny test,’ meaning

Lisa Davenport_Sanctuary_NP52.indd 163

2/1/21 2:54 PM

Davenport created a master bathroom with a view, by placing freestanding cabinetry featuring side-by-side sinks in front of an expanse of windows. She strategically hung mirrors so the homeowners can see both themselves and the view beyond. 164 FLORIDA DESIGN’S NAPLES EDITION 5-2

they had to be a place where you would feel comfortable sitting all evening at that counter. And they passed. They have just the right amount of cushion and pitch.” Cool blue hues from the kitchen countertop were pulled into the dining room, and a contemporary walnut table and chairs and simple black light fixture combined to provide an elegant place to enjoy a meal. The main house has one comfortable master suite, and two guest rooms with en suite baths. As a practical matter, there is a casita that Davenport said could eventually be used as a caretaker’s quarters. After eighteen months of work, Davenport was ready for the reveal. The style was her signature cashmere and blue jeans, she said, or a considered mix of polished and rustic, refined and easy, organic and chic. “It’s not ultra contemporary, it’s not traditional,” she explains. “It’s a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll.” The clients loved what they saw. “As they looked at everything, all the details, it was really rewarding for me to see the looks on their faces,” Davenport says. “After all, it is their forever home.”

Overstuffed pillows, comfortable patterned linens, an upholstered headboard and plush chairs provide a welcome retreat at the end of a day, or a dreamlike space for breakfast in bed. Sculptural side tables and a visually arresting étagère infuse the space with crisp lines and angles. A wallpapered accent wall behind the bed offers dimension and depth.

Davenport brought in wood around the fire-pit, and added green spaces to make the area more natural. An outdoor kitchen and dining area, and a poolside shower make this a great space to while away the afternoon.

ADVERTORIAL

NAPLES FLOORING COMPANY At both downtown showrooms of the Naples Flooring Company, owners Laurie and Cristian Longo ensure a flawless experience. As Naples’ preeminent purveyor of wide-plank flooring from European manufacturer Legno Bastone, Naples Flooring Company is the go-to destination for those seeking Old World craftmanship and exquisite beauty. “We have beautiful galleries in the heart of the downtown Naples, the Miami Design District and Palm Beach,” explains Cristian. “Our galleries showcase gorgeous flooring, with intricate, custom

CNC patterns that excite the imagination and exemplify the detailed care we put into everything that we do.” Everything is custom-made and reflects the quality and discernment we bring to our clients’ homes. Flooring selection is one of the most important aspects of interior design, for both residential and commercial spaces. “Our exquisite flooring can enhance the visual appeal of any interior space,” says Laurie. The Longo family recently opened two additional galleries on Florida’s East Coast.

A traditional French exterior

and materials not typical seen in South Florida

characterize this Southwest Ranches home by Josh Fein and Jenny Zalkin of Fein Zalkin Interiors. The French country–style home features a massive stone fireplace wall juxtaposed with floor-to-ceiling glass windows and doors, fusing the two aesthetics seamlessly. Crossing over from European elegance to Floridian ease, the transitional interior creates a comfortable haven for the family of six.
