FROM THE EDITOR

I don’t know about you, but I had just settled into summer’s slower pace when September came around, a tad too fast for my liking. Now that kids are back to school and we’re back in “go” mode, I’m starting to feel the energy of the season. From the return of cultural happenings to the highly anticipated deals of Miami Spice, there’s much to be excited about. In anticipation of an active season, this month we turn our focus to style in all its forms. Echoing the collective desire for a lifestyle shift in the wake of the pandemic, cover model Brittany Peltz Buerstedde relocated from New York City to Miami and is already establishing herself as a style influencer. Her newest business, SENA Lifestyle Studio, offers mindful products for self-care and the “sacred spaces” of home, all of which she has hand-selected and uses herself. We invite you to learn more about Brittany and visit the Miami home she shares with her family in “Creating a Scene” on page 42. If you follow Miami’s rapidly growing swimwear scene, you’ll love our trend story focusing on local and South American designers who are blazing new trails in the industry. We bring you the season’s hottest new swim looks by these rising stars to get you ready for the waves (or the beach club). Turn to “Make a Splash” on page 50 for our full report. For more wardrobe inspiration, you’ll want to check out fashion editor Katherine Lande’s modern take on East Coast prep on page 62. With references to classic, all-American style and silhouettes and pattern plays that are decidedly of the moment, “Out East” is your must-have guide to fall dressing. The issue is full of content to get you ready for season, and I hope you’ll find our pages informative and inspiring. And don’t forget to follow us on social media and subscribe to our weekly e-newsletter, Insider’s Guide, on aventuramagazine.com. Cheers to a fun and productive season!

Explore 16 immersive rooms dedicated to a different “ish” factor of womanhood inside Wynwood’s Womanish.

CULTURE

Whimsical ESCAPE What are the current issues women face around the world? The new Wynwood exhibition Womanish brings some of those to light with a playful, thought-provoking approach. Designed by women for women, the experience incorporates 16 one-of-a-kind room activations, each assembled with vividly colored murals and creative installations from local and national female artists. Visitors can snap pictures as they interact with the space or rent a Polaroid for 10 complimentary prints. Sisters Danyelle and Dionna Gray founded the initiative in their hometown of Chicago last year to provide a safe, empowering place for women to connect. “The word ‘womxn’ is an alternative spelling

015_Aventurist_MIX_0921-2.indd 15

of the English word ‘woman,’ an intersectional term that includes women of color and other sects not included in the original feminist movement,” says Danyelle. “We feel that Womanish intertwines flawlessly into the many current movements showcasing women empowerment and womxn’s voices.” What has been accomplished, what still needs to be done, and who has been left out of the narrative? Different “ish” factors of the contemporary womanhood experience are highlighted from various viewpoints, including awakening the inner child in “Childish,” experiencing a holographic dimension in “Vanish,” and exploring the impact of the pink tax in “Consumerish.” The sisters say showing in Miami was a great accomplishment and are planning to take the project to other cities to continue fostering womxn discourse. Smile for the selfie RIA MICHELLE OFFERS ADVICE ON HOW TO SPICE UP YOUR INSTA FEED AT THE SOCIAL HUB MIAMI Social media enthusiasts, this one’s for you! Brickell City Center’s newest go-to destination, The Social Hub Miami, is designed with 18 individual stations offering unlimited, unhindered photo opportunities for selfies. The interactive-themed studios were conceived by Kenny Daniels during the pandemic, when social distancing forced the personal trainer to transition to a full-time social media influencer. “Being that Miami’s outdoor scene selection primarily consists of palm trees and skylines, it was hard for me to meet some of the [clients’] requirements,” says Daniels. “I imagined a place where you could go and capture multiple Ria Michelle photos with a variety of clean

backgrounds and change clothes privately, with no people walking by.” The result is 3,500 square feet of eye-catching stations, outfitted with unique backdrops, props, LED ring lights, and three onsite dressing rooms. The Brickell space will partner with select local artists on a rotating basis to curate their own interactive studio as well as display select pieces. “People literally come to Brickell City Centre to capture selfies,” says Daniels. “Why not offer them more?” Make the most of your time at Social Hub with South Florida blogger Ria Michelle (@riamichelle), who has amassed an Instagram following of nearly 27K. Here, she shares four of her best tips on how to take the best photo. (thesocial hubmiami.com) —J.A.

RELAX MODE Extend your summer fun TWO WAYS

MIAMI HOTEL MONTHS

Pack your bags for a relaxing change of scenery without leaving town. The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau is celebrating Miami Hotel Months once again, and more than 70 of the city’s best hotels are featuring resort credits, complimentary meals, and other specials through the end of the month. Not sure where to stay? Make it easy with The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne. The Family Escape package is complete with a special 50 percent savings on a second room, Spa-cation includes two 50-minute spa treatments, and Reconnect comes with a buffet breakfast for two daily and $100 resort credit per night. On top of that, guests have access to amenities such as the hotel’s beach, gym, and bar. (theritzcarlton.com) —J.A. 16

“Taking a good selfie is pretty much an art at this point,” says Michelle. “It’s not about being photogenic or having a top-of-the-line camera. It’s all about the technique and the setup.”

»

Focus on the camera. Smile with your eyes as Tyra Banks would say. Give us emotion but nothing aggressive or harsh. Try to be soft, so it doesn’t come across as trying too hard.

» Know your angles. A shot from up

high and tilting the phone or your head in some way usually does the trick.

» Take your time. This goes back

to knowing your angles. Even for the best of us, sometimes it takes a minute or two to find your sweet spot. Don’t be ashamed of taking too many either. It’s always better to have more to choose from than not enough.

»

Find the light. Good lighting is doing most of the heavy lifting in almost any photo you’ll ever take. It’s always best to have the light hitting you and try to avoid being backlit (when the light shines behind you).

Modern ART

Discover Miami’s first NFT GALLERY

Blackdove will offer buyers the chance to purchase digital artwork on display via cryptocurrency.

Whether you’re engulfed in the NFT world or just scratching the surface, you’ll want to check out Miami’s first NFT gallery by Blackdove, a leading fine art NFT platform. NFT’s, otherwise known as “non-fungible tokens,” are unique types of cryptographic tokens that signify digital stamps of authenticity and serve as original ownership signatures, says Blackdove founder Marc Billings, who is a local entrepreneur and crypto art expert/gallery curator. He likens an NFT to a vehicle identification number (VIN) on a car. “Many cars are the same, so the VIN number uniquely identifies your car,” he says. When registered with the government, the car is then identified

as owned by you. Similarly, when an artwork’s NFT is in your wallet, it is identified as yours. “There may be other artworks that are similar, but that NFT token is yours and this ownership can be confirmed by scanning the Blockchain (distributed database updated and shared across a network of computers that verifies that there is only ever one account capable of owning the NFT at a given time),” he says. The gallery rotates weekly, and is housed inside TheArsenale at the Miami Design District for guests to view a curated exhibition featuring more than 100 moving image digital works of art from over 50 global artists. “Digital art is a very unique medium in that it offers artists the ability to expand from a single frame of content to multi-frame,” says Billings. “Historically, this may have been a video narrative, however, the new breed of artists has created works that emulate a moving painting, and this is truly fascinating.” In addition to the gallery, Blackdove recently launched a Marco Brambilla exhibition at the Pérez Art Museum that will be on display through the new year. SPOTLIGHT

EVERY DAY LASTS FOREVER Colombian fashion designer Esteban Cortázar has teamed up with Spanish fashion company Desigual on a new retail collection titled Cada día es para siempre (every day is forever). Inspired by Miami Beach in the ’90s, the 17-piece collection showcases imagery by Miami artist Valentino Cortázar and photographer Andy Sweet. At 15, Cortázar became the youngest designer to show in New York Fashion Week and went on to become the head designer for the House of Emanuel Ungaro. Here, he chats about his inspiration and Miami roots. —J.A. 18

What inspired the collection? The place that inspired me was Miami in the 1990s, where I grew up. I also heavily collaborated with the legacy of photographer Andy Sweet and his amazing work during the ’70s on SoBe by creating a print for the collection, as well as my father, Valentino Cortázar, who was one of the pioneer artists that came to South Beach in the ’90s and had his studio on 8th Street and Ocean Drive. How does it feel to launch your collection in Miami? It is an incredible feeling as my Miami roots are a major inspiration for me. This collection gave me the opportunity to pay tribute and show appreciation for the place that gave me the people and experiences that shaped me as a designer.

Tell us about your time living in South Florida. I grew up above the News Cafe, during the glory years of South Beach in the ’90s, where a very special creative renaissance took place as a melting pot of fashion, music, art, and Latin heat. There was an eclectic mix of incredible people that made South Beach such a special and artistic place. The project celebrates the never-ending days of summer, sunset kisses, and the spirit of youth and diversity—a very iconic, spontaneous, and liberating time.

AVENTURIST LIVING WITH IVEY

Toxic Exposure

The DIRTY TRUTH about our cleaning and personal care products By Ivey Leidy Photography by Kent Anderson

We view our homes as our sanctuaries, our sacred spaces in which we take pride. We like to keep them clean, organized, and decorated to our liking. What we don’t realize is that within that sacred space hide, on average, 62 different toxic chemicals. The products we use to wipe our countertops and clean our toilet bowls fill the air in our homes with toxins, irritants, and carcinogens that could be contributing to many of our health issues. We do the same with our own bodies—from the pans we use to cook our food to soap and deodorant. It is said that the average woman uses 12 different personal care products per day and the average man uses 6 per day; in the 12 products that women use hide 168 different chemicals (85 in the men’s products). What’s even more alarming is that 80 percent of these chemicals aren’t even tested before they hit shelves. These chemicals and pollutants are inhaled and/or absorbed through the skin and, once inside the body, Go for a spa day: infrared saunas can help your body release toxins from the liver, intestines, and kidneys.

CHEMICALS TO AVOID

they can alter hormones, causing a slew of health issues including early puberty in children, fertility issues in women, thyroid dysfunction, and weight gain—and even potentially contributing to the development of breast, prostate, and ovarian cancers. The good news? You can start limiting your exposure and detoxing the body by incorporating a few different practices and foods. Switch to nontoxic cleaning products and cosmetics or make your own; swap aluminum foil for parchment paper; switch to cast iron, stainless steel, or 100 percent ceramic cookware with no aluminum core; switch from plastic to glass or stainless-steel reusable water bottles. You can also add indoor air purifiers to reduce pollutants like dust, pollen, bacteria, and mold in your home, and invest in a quality water purifier that will remove harmful levels of fluoride, viruses, bacteria, lead, arsenic, mercury, chlorine, heavy metals, and pesticides from your drinking water. Maybe go for a spa day, too: infrared saunas can help release toxins from the liver, intestines, and kidneys, and lymphatic drainage massages aid the body in its natural detoxification process.

ESCAPE WANDERLUST

Rhino WARRIORS

The rhinoceros is facing a global extinction crisis due to poaching and habitat loss. But two conservation-focused programs are working to reverse the species’ tragic trajectory through mindful encounters with some of the world’s remaining rhinos.

MEGHAULI SERAI, A TAJ SAFARI, NEPAL Think of Nepal, and images of Mount Everest and Buddhist relics likely come to mind. Far less known is the equally impressive ecological splendor—and extraordinary conservation efforts—of this small country in the Himalayas. Near Nepal’s southern border with India, Chitwan National Park stands proud as a refuge for Asia’s greater one-horned rhinoceros, one of three extant rhinoceros species found on the continent. With little promise remaining for Indonesia’s Sumatran rhino (population: fewer than 80) and Javan rhino (population: about 60), the greater one-horned rhinoceros is arguably Asia’s final SEPTEMBER 2021

chance to prevent rhinos from disappearing entirely from the continent. Historically, this species’ habitat covered the entire northern part of the Indian subcontinent. After skirting extinction at the turn of the twentieth century due to hunting and human–wildlife conflicts, fledgling laws helped protect the remaining 200 individuals. Numbers hovered at dangerously low levels until more serious conservation action in the early 1970s, including the declaration of prime rhino real estate at Nepal’s first national park, Chitwan National Park, with an elaborate network of guard posts to protect wildlife. The park’s boundaries were expanded in 1977 and these jungle-filled lowlands were declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1984. Staunch protection and iron-fisted management by wildlife authorities in Nepal 34

and neighboring India achieved the impossible: By 2017, over 3,500 one-horned rhinos roamed grasslands around the Nepal-India border, with more than 600 in Chitwan. Safeguarding the rhino and its habitat of waving elephant grass and soaring Sal trees came with a bonus: Chitwan blossomed into a sanctuary for other beauties of the animal kingdom, from Bengal tigers, leopards, elephants, langurs, and gharials to some 540 species of birds, including the highly photogenic peacock and the critically endangered Bengal florican. This trailblazing park also caught the attention of esteemed Taj Safaris (tajhotels.com/taj-safaris), which had pioneered a luxury tiger safari circuit in India. The brand felt the time was right to expose its clientele to the rare experience of trekking the elusive one-horned rhino—and its Jungle Book companions—in the forested lowlands of southern Nepal. In 2016 they debuted the 30-room Meghauli Serai, A Taj Safari, comprising a 13-unit safari lodge, 16 stand-alone villas, and a Rapti Mahal suite along the banks of the Rapti River. Balancing nature, luxury, and sense of place, the understated but impressive Meghauli Serai sets the scene for a memorable safari. Guest rooms overlook the grasslands, while a sleek infinity pool perches above the river. Local and national influences abound in the design and decor, from walls hand-painted with depictions of daily life in local Tharu villages to bathrooms adorned

with traditional Nepalese stone spouts and a chandelier of 10,000 Nepalese hand-painted beads illuminating the entrance lobby. From the eco-minded lodge, set out on twice-daily excursions with trained naturalists in search of the greater one-horned rhino in every way imaginable: by Jeep, canoe, or boat, or on foot or elephant-back. No matter the method, meet park authorities along the way and witness how Chitwan’s patrolling system has garnered such success. Trekkers can also look forward to quickly discovering the star attraction of the national park— whereas fleeting encounters are the norm when it comes to rhinos in other places, extended rhino spotting is hardly uncommon in Chitwan, as a healthy population translates to frequent sightings. Between the majestic rhinos and other charismatic fauna, this stunning tract of Nepal offers a rare glimpse into how the wilds of Asia once thrived—and still can. Thanks to Meghauli Serai, luxury travelers can now

033_AV_ESCAPE_0921.indd 35

partake in the fruits of a century-plus of rhino conservation—and do it in style. &BEYOND, SOUTH AFRICA From a combined population of hundreds of thousands prior to the 1900s and a range that spanned nearly the entirety of Africa, the presence of black rhinos and white rhinos has since dwindled to fewer than 25,000 individuals over a habitat confined to select parklands and reserves within southern Africa. As

the black-market price of rhino horn continues to rise, poaching rages, in turn fueling a race against time to save the continent’s final rhino populations. A standout in this often soul-crushing marathon has been conservation-led travel company &Beyond (andbeyond.com). Conceived in 1991 with &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve, the company revitalized miles of overgrazed farmland in KwaZulu-Natal and reintroduced the region’s original biodiversity while investing in local communities in the form of schools and clinics. The first endangered species to make a return at Phinda was the white rhino, a species that is the cornerstone of &Beyond’s conservation efforts. Fast-forward to present day: The population at Phinda is considered to be one of South Africa’s most important white rhino reserves—so much so that nearly 100 individuals have been translocated from the Phinda reserve to other game reserves and protected areas in South Africa and Botswana in hopes of similar success. Moreover, Phinda has endeavored to become a stronghold for the critically endangered black rhino; since partnering with the World Wildlife Fund on the Black Rhino Range Expansion Project in 2004, 30 black rhino calves SEPTEMBER 2021

have been conceived on the reserve. Nowadays, travelers can experience Phinda’s surfeit of rhinos—alongside an epic population of big cats—during a stay at any of the reserve’s six design-driven safari lodges. Encounter black and/or white rhinos on 4x4 road journeys; half-day, ranger-led walking safaris; or as part of a rhino research program, shadowing veterinarians and researchers to dart and notch the rhinos and collect pertinent data for species longevity.

It’s also possible to get an experiential rhino fix at the company’s two lodges in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve, which shares unfenced borders with Kruger National Park. At &Beyond Tengile River Lodge and &Beyond Kirkman’s Kamp, anticipate frequent rhino encounters on game drives, perhaps even sundowners in their mighty presence. In addition, look forward to some of the most superlative accommodations in South Africa’s safari circuit—at the much-loved Kirkman’s Kamp, revel in a new-fashioned take on Old World elegance, cozy in a 1920s homestead reimagined in 2021 by South African–based design firm

Fox Browne Creative; at Tengile River Lodge, opened in December 2018, savor the pinnacle of safari chic in one of nine guest suites overlooking the Sand River. Each 2,150-square-foot suite blends seamlessly into the landscape and dazzles with its amalgam of stone, slatted raw wood, and hand-painted upholstery that mimics the colors and sights of the bush. Reaching a milestone 30 years in 2021, &Beyond—and its fans—have much to celebrate. Dedicated to wildlife conservation, community development, and the ultimate in guest experience, the brand ensures that safari remains the greatest travel story ever told—and that rhinos remain part of the narrative. «

BONDED Goods

Aston Martin’s first SUV, the dynamic DBX, puts the sport in sport utility By Howard Walker There’ll come a time when Bond, James Bond, will hand back the Walther PPK, the MI6-issued Omega Seamaster, and the license to kill. He’ll get hitched, settle down, and no doubt have a couple of rug rats with Miss Moneypenny. The current 007, Daniel Craig, is 53, for goodness’ sake. Arthritis and AARP are just around the corner. Of course, with matrimonial bliss will come spatial needs. It’s no good rushing around in a classic ’60s two-seater—even one with machine guns and ejector seats—when there are baby seats to fit and IKEA flat packs to lug home. Taking it as a given that Bond will always drive an Aston Martin, the company has thankfully seen his dilemma and come up with the perfect new Bondmobile: the 2021 DBX (an SUV, no less). But this is not your typical sport-ute. Here is 38

arguably the sportiest, most agile, most dynamic loadhauling 4x4 out there—one sure to leave even 007 both shaken and stirred. It’s also arguably the most gorgeous SUV money, or even Moneypenny, can buy. With that trademark front grille, practically a carbon copy of the one on Bond’s much-loved 1964 DB5, it’s unmistakably an Aston. I love the swept-back windshield and swoopy roofline. I love that curvy, bulging hood which, I reckon, used Daniel Craig’s sixpack abs, showcased in Casino Royale, for design inspiration. Plus, it’s comforting to know that much of the DBX’s key technology comes courtesy of Mercedes-Benz. (Heck, even Aston’s new CEO, Tobias Moers, was formerly boss of Mercedes-AMG.) Pop that curvy hood

to see the fruits of the Aston-Mercedes partnership: Powering this new DBX is a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 that does duty in a bevy of Benzes, along with the Aston DB11 and Vantage. It’s been massaged by Aston to better suit SUV duty, cranking out an impressive 542-horsepower and muscley 516 poundfeet of torque. Mated to a Mercedes-sourced nine-speed automatic and rear-wheel-biased all-wheel drive, the DBX can scoot from standstill to 60 in just 4.3 seconds. But instead of borrowing a 4x4 platform from Mercedes, the company developed an all-new one for the DBX—an I-beam-stiff concoction of glued and riveted aluminum.

PRICE: FROM $176,900 ($205,086 AS TESTED) ENGINE: 4.0-LITER TWIN-TURBO V-8 TRANSMISSION: 9-SPEED AUTOMATIC POWER: 542 HP TORQUE: 516 LB-FT 0-60: 4.3 SECONDS TOP SPEED: 181 MPH LENGTH/WIDTH: 198/79 INCHES WEIGHT: 4,940 POUNDS WHY WE LOVE IT: BECAUSE THE DRIVING EXPERIENCE IS JUST AS DYNAMIC AS THE DESIGN.

And it drives like a dream. Naturally, it’s quick—dial up sport mode and it will barrel away from a stoplight like a rock out of a catapult—but it’s not the hard-edged, blunt instrument it could have been. The snap, crackle, and pop exhaust is there, but it’s subdued, less vocal. In place of hard-riding sports suspension, the DBX features three-chamber air springs for a smoother, silkier ride. They can even do double-duty, raising the body to wade through waist-deep water. Still, what will stagger you is the sheer agility when you start powering the DBX through curves. With an electronic antiroll system quelling just about any body roll, and the kind of precise, well weighted steering that feels hard-wired to your brain, it’s an SUV that thinks it’s a nimble sportscar. Inside, the Aston’s cabin is a joyous place to experience all this action. Most surfaces are slathered in buttery-soft Bridge of Weir leather with gorgeous double stitching. In here, there’s proper space for five adults plus their luggage, with rear-seat legroom being especially stretch-out comfy. And the full-length panoramic sunroof floods the cabin with light. Pricewise, you’ll pay $176,900 for a base DBX—around the same as a V-8-powered Bentley Bentayga—though our extras-laden test car stickered at a lofty $205,086. Its only other real rival is the similarly priced 670-horsepower Porsche Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid Coupe. As for 007, a DBX would definitely help ease him smoothly, and speedily, into parenthood. Perhaps Q could even design him a couple of custom kiddie seats. Minus the ejectors, of course. «

Pardo goes BIG

The Italian builder best known for sleek and slender day boats adds a stunning new FLAGSHIP CRUISER to its lineup By Howard Walker For our French lesson of the day, consider the phrase “en plein air.” Translated, it means “out of doors.” But it was also a term used to describe the practice adopted by Impressionist artists of painting from start to finish outside. Of course, there are always those who take en plein air to the extreme—like nineteenthcentury British painter Stanhope Forbes, who was reportedly photographed painting during a gale, his easel tethered down by ropes. Strange, then, that Italian boat builder Pardo Yachts should use a French phrase to describe the feeling you get stepping aboard their stunning new flagship cruiser, the Pardo Endurance 60; all’aria aperta sounds just as good. Either way, both phrases describe the way this sleek, ax-bowed 60-footer can transform its main salon into a magical open-air solarium at the mere touch of a few buttons.

Press one to power down the huge, darktinted salon side windows. Press two to open the full-width concertina-style doors to the aft deck. Press three to power down the vast side sections of the hull to almost double the width of the rear teak-decked cockpit. With everything open, it creates the coolest beach club this side of Saint-Tropez. En plein air, indeed. Founded in 1973, Cantiere del Pardo—based in the town of Forlì near Italy’s Adriatic coast— has been building a lineup of Grand Soleil performance sailboats. They’ve built more than 4,500 to date. But it was in 2017 that the yard really got into its stride with a switch to turning out walk-around, center-console, go-fast day boats. The Pardo 43 was followed by the Pardo 50 in 2018 and the Pardo 38 last year. But it seems existing Pardo owners wanted something bigger to spend more time aboard

with friends and families. The result is the spectacular Endurance 60, which makes its debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival this month. The hull is from the drawing board of Swiss naval architect Davide Leone with an interior by Milan-based Nauta Design. As with Pardo’s day boats, the 60 sticks with that trademark reverse bow, the pop-out anchor cradle, and high bulwarks capped with teak. Add to that a pair of huge hull windows on each side and that distinctive big-windowed cabin with fullwidth, angled-back forward window and curvy roof design. On top of it all, there’s a spacious, low-profile flybridge with loungers galore. Just gazing at the deck, it feels like every inch has been maximized to provide the most usable space—from big foredeck sun pads to massive side decks to the vast cockpit with room for a table for six. As for those fold-down

Inside, the salon layout is equally bright, breezy, and open. Placing the galley right by the cockpit with all those opening windows makes entertaining (and keeping the frosty rosé flowing) a literal breeze. Forward in the salon is a big comfy sofa and high-low table, along with the indoor helm to starboard.

Below deck there are three en suite staterooms with a full-width master midship, a forward VIP that can be a double or V-berth, and a third cabin with two singles. They’ve even managed to squeeze in generous crew quarters. Part of this spaciousness is down to equipping the 60 with twin Volvo IPS drives way back at the stern. Take your pick from 550-horsepower IPS 700s or 625-horsepower IPS 800s, but according to Pardo, the 800s

should give a top speed of 25 knots and an easy 20-knot cruising speed. Throttle back to 10 knots and it should average 10.5 gallons an hour with a range of around 700 miles. Zach Germain, of Naples-based Pardo distributor Germain Yachts (that’s Naples, Florida, not the Italian one), says the first Endurance 60s in the United States should arrive before the end of the year, with a nicely loaded version priced around $2.5 million. There’s another French phrase, in addition to en plein air, that I think perfectly describes this exquisite new Pardo—magnifique! «

CREATING A SCENE

With an eye to all things stylish and soulful, Brittany Peltz Buerstedde’s new venture aims to bring heavenly designs into earthly homes BY JUDY MARTEL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANGELA HOWARD PHOTOGRAPHY

O

ne way or another, Brittany Peltz Buerstedde says she’s always been creating. Starting with her childhood as a competitive ice skater and on to a budding career as a fashion designer— including her own skating costumes and then a children’s clothing line—through to her latest venture as an interior designer and purveyor of carefully curated luxury lifestyle items on her e-boutique, Buerstedde pours all her passion and energy into creating businesses that go beyond merely offering items for sale: They reflect moments in time on her life’s journey. After injuries crushed her dreams of competitive ice skating, Buerstedde attended NYU Tisch School of the Arts and interned at Gagosian Gallery. She met and married the love of her life, Rhone Capital Managing Director Franz-Ferdinand Buerstedde, in Palm Beach in 2014. The couple welcomed daughters Eva Leah, 6, and Lila Rae, 4, and her children’s wear company, Leah + Rae, was born out of the frustration of not being able to find girl clothing that resonated with her aesthetic. The burgeoning business was on its way with a line of some two dozen styles before the pandemic hit. “Our incredible factories shut down and my life shifted out of NYC [to Miami],” she says. Her personal priorities took a turn as well. “The energy in the city felt off, and I didn’t feel safe sending my kids out,” she says. So the

family, which by that time included son Phoenix Blu (now nearly 2 years old), headed to Palm Beach for a break—and they ended up buying a home in Miami. As a young mother rebuilding family life in a new city during a lockdown, Buerstedde recognized a new opportunity in helping people not only design their homes but create a nurturing, sacred space. Enter her next act: SENA, encompassing an interior design business and related lifestyle e-boutique that exemplify her philosophy of balancing wellness, spirituality, and good energy to make a home an oasis of tranquility. Her new e-boutique, SENA Lifestyle Studio, extends the reach of her design philosophy to a wider audience, offering a mix of products ranging from postnatal smoothies that deliver needed nutrients to new mothers, to locally made jewelry and hand-woven pillows and Moroccan rugs. Everything is ethically made, sourced from high-quality materials, and selected to promote alignment of mind, 44 AVENTURA MAGAZINE

Buerstedde transformed her Miami home’s former palette from dark and moody to soft, light, and warm, accented with pieces from her SENA Lifestyle Studio collection, such as ethically made hand-woven pillows and Moroccan rugs.

I WOULDN’T TRUST ANYONE BUT HER, AND SHE IS DIVINE TO WORK WITH. AS AN INTERIOR DESIGNER, HER STYLE IS EFFORTLESSLY TIMELESS.” —ASHLEY SIDMAN body, and soul. “All the pieces on the e-boutique are ones that I would personally use in my own home for myself, my family, or a client,” she says. The name of the new business was the result of a somewhat exhaustive search. “I wanted a name that was universal and not limiting in scope or style. Nothing felt right until I found SENA amongst a list of baby names I had saved on my phone.” One of its meanings, “bringing heaven to earth,” resonated with Buerstedde. “Our work is not purely grounded in the physical beauty of a room, but in creating a room and a home that speak to a person’s lifestyle and how they want to spend time in each of those spaces,” she says. Ashley Sidman, who hired Buerstedde to design and renovate her family’s homes in Miami Beach and Deer Valley, Utah, says she wept when she first saw the rendering for the bedroom of one of her daughters. “I wouldn’t trust anyone but her, and she is divine to work with,” Sidman says. “As an interior designer, her style is effortlessly timeless.” Buerstedde’s own piece of heaven on earth in a gated community in Miami near the Design District is a far stretch from the home she and her family previously occupied in a high-rise in lower Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood. With plenty of rooms for homeschooling the kids and an office for Franz, the new location checked all the major criteria for the move, Buerstedde notes. “Most of all, we needed a home where we could all thrive under one roof. During a very uncertain time, these were our priorities.” The home’s design came instantly, as soon as Buerstedde walked in and saw the open layout with the “gorgeous nature” outside. “I came into the house and could immediately 46 AVENTURA MAGAZINE

The exterior of Buerstedde’s home was just as important as the interior and is surrounded by lush foliage and tropical fruit trees. She says this outdoor setting is healing and ideal for her kids.

feel that homey sense and see my vision coming to life.” Stripping the brown and green wallpaper, incorporating a liberal use of white paint, and removing the Italian glass-blown chandelier allowed her to transform the palette from dark and moody to soft, light, and warm. Nature is important to Buerstedde, and she takes full advantage of it in this home. “Despite having moved many times [during her childhood] I did learn the love of the outdoors and the healing power of nature, which I want my children to experience,” she says. “I can see their hearts at ease and their smiles brighter and bigger when they spend those blissful days outdoors collecting plants and fresh fruit from the tropical fruit trees. Instead of a Starbucks and Duane Reade on every corner [in New York], we have palm trees and iguanas.” Family is the touchstone of Buerstedde’s life. Growing up in an insanely productive brood—father Nelson Peltz is a billionaire businessman, mother Claudia is an ex-model, two of her siblings are actors, and one is an ex-NHL hockey player—gave her the grounding for her life as a mother and entrepreneur. “I loved my upbringing and am so grateful to have the most incredible parents, who taught me that family and love are, above all, most important.” Balancing family and work is a “constant effort,” she says. “When you know your priorities, it definitely helps a lot. My commitment to my family and children will always come first. Bedtime routines and nightly cuddles are a must. It’s very important for me to start and end each day as a family.” Sidman, who developed a friendship with Buerstedde because their daughters were in the same dance classes, says she often wonders how she accomplishes so much with gratitude and ease. “She is the best of everything as a friend, mother, and an interior designer. As Coco Chanel would say, ‘Elegance is when the inside is as beautiful as the outside.’ This is Brittany.” Last year may have been driven by “the world stopping on its axis” during the pandemic, but Buerstedde says she and Franz love their new life and haven’t looked back since setting down new roots in Miami. “I was and am still grateful every single day for the palm trees, sunshine, and fresh air, which have become the new backdrop for our lives.” « 48 AVENTURA MAGAZINE

AGUA BENDITA

Ancora

Catalina Álvarez and Mariana Hinestroza are the co-founders of Agua Bendita, along with co-creative director Sergio Sánchez. With ties to Colombia and Miami, the swim line’s attention to detail is what sets it apart. Agua Bendita’s latest collection unites the groovy era of the ’60s with island elements in a palette of hues such as coconut, gold, pink taupe, and cranberry. “This collection celebrates the nomadic spirit movement,” says Sánchez. “Prints and silhouettes that travel from the past to meet the contemporary versions of imaginaries connected with the colorful and vibrant spirit of Agua Bendita.”

Laura Mercado is behind Ancora, an eco-conscious and ethically made line of bathing suits designed in Colombia and based in Miami. Ancora offers women feminine and fashionable swimwear that’s flirtatious and fun. Pastels stand out in Mercado’s signature piece, the Cali Dream high-waisted bikini, from her new “California Dreams” collection. “My inspiration for ‘Californian Dreams’ was based on Santa Monica,” shares Mercado, who called living there “a dreamy moment.” The color palette features pastel blue, lilac, and hot pink. “The part I most enjoy [about designing] is watching our illustrations come to life when printed on our fabrics,” says Mercado. “That moment is just everything.”

Bahama Mama

Honey Birdette

Nicole Acosta Lejour and Rocio Borré are the “mamas” behind the Colombian brand Bahama Mama. Their company is built on the pillars of “happiness, confidence, and comfort complemented by simplicity when it comes to dressing.” Inspired by nature and the relaxed vibe of the beach, Bahama Mama presents a mood and lifestyle that invites people to live life to the fullest. The brand is also eco-oriented, as shown throughout its blog “We Love Green.” Look out for Bahama Mama’s signature groovy print from the “L.A. Felicità” collection in one-piece and two-piece silhouettes.

Luxurious and provocative, Honey Birdette by Eloise Monaghan bathing suits are designed to be worn at Champagne poolside soirees and “fantasy-inducing” beach days. Her latest collection is inspired by European-chic glamour and takes gold elements from the Honey Birdette lingerie collections and incorporates them into layered pieces dripping in black, red, leopard, and neon. “We don’t like to follow trends,” says Monaghan. “We like to stay ahead of them.”

Mola Mola

Mar De Lua’s latest collection is inspired by women who want to blossom and feel free. Three main color blocks, including hot pink, orange, and purple, make the collection pop, with patterns ranging from flowers to animal prints. The signature “Summer Blossom” uses neon and color in three styles to present a must-have look. “Finding inspiration in different places, working with colors, playing with textures, and being creative gives us life,” says Colombia-based Carolina Diazgranados. “At the same time, we are aware of the great responsibility we have as a brand to speak to real women. That is why we design to detail each piece, playing with different silhouettes, perfect for all body types.”

Adriana Dangond and Ana Cecilia Dangond are the sisters behind Mola Mola, a Colombian swimwear line founded on the motto of laid-back living by azure waters. The Dangonds offer a lens into the Caribbean through sleek and sophisticated silhouettes that represent the apex of the tropics. Mola Mola’s “Boha Mia” collection brings comfortable and trendy swimwear to real life, while also committing to sustainability by using fabrics developed with recycled PET bottles collected from the sea. “Boho Mia is a collection inspired by those dreamy, romantic women, capable of convincing the universe to be at their feet,” says Adriana.

Palmacea

Smeralda

Manuela Botero is behind Palmacea, a swimwear line based in Bogotá, Colombia, that pulls inspiration from the country’s colorful landscapes and infinite flora. Seeking balance between color, design, and comfort, Palmacea looks to make every woman feel special through the essence of feminine silhouettes. Palmacea’s “Semilla” collection showcases a kaleidoscope of neon pastels such as lilac, sage green, banana, and lake blue. Botero says the collection is inspired by today’s current environment in which we were forced to start over, slow down, and “start enjoying the little pleasures in life.” She feels the collection is also reminiscent of Miami’s landscape of bright colors, tropical flowers, and “retro style.”

This Miami and Colombian swimwear line is inspired by architecture and romance, representing everything that moves in nature and its landscapes while “elevating the inherent beauty, sensuality, and elegance of women,” shares founder Ospina Acosta. Smeralda’s signature piece is the Leticia Beirut one-piece, what Acosta calls a “must-have reversible swimsuit that celebrates sustainability.”

o matter how cold you keep it, ice cream can melt any dieter’s resolve. Laurence McMillon, owner of ice cream sandwich company Wynwood Parlor, is counting on just that—as both an entrepreneur and a host. McMillon recently opened a new outpost of his ice cream lounge at Southgate Towers on West Avenue in Miami Beach. To celebrate, he and his fiancée, Alysse Richardson, invited friends for a Miami-style ice cream social in their Oasis Bar/Wynwood Parlor location, located on the

tenth floor pool deck at the Bay Parc Apartments in Edgewater. “We created modern tropical glamour with ice cream,” says Richardson of the breezy and beautiful setting. Cutting his teeth on the food industry as a child, McMillon says he grew up learning how to entertain. “I lived between Washington, D.C., where my grandfather had a restaurant, and Atlanta. I learned how to throw a party and often boiled crabs, manned the grill, and tended bar. I love to entertain.” He’s put that family tradition to good use in a hospitality career of nearly 25 years—starting

as a bartender at Atlanta’s Phillips Arena/Bank of America Club (now State Farm Arena and home of the Atlanta Hawks) and eventually becoming a regional manager with Sodexo/ Centerplate, overseeing venues like the Hollywood Bowl, the Pasadena Convention Center, the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, and the Seattle Aquarium In 2007, he opened his first bar concept called M Bar & Lounge (music, martinis, and margaritas) in Atlanta’s historic Castleberry Hill neighborhood, where he and Richardson met. After Richardson graduated from chiropractic school, the couple moved to Miami in 2011 for the culture and climate. They plan to marry next year. Now settled in the Magic City, Richardson practices at the Comprehensive Health Center in North Miami. Formerly

a general manager at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, McMillon now works as a client relations executive for a multi-national food and beverage company. But that’s not his only gig. Eager to spend more time with his two sons from a previous marriage—Caleb, 14, and Kelton, 24, McMillon started Wynwood Parlor as a side business in 2016. “We painted an ice cream truck that we found on craigslist in Port St. Lucie,” says McMillon. “I had seen custom ice cream sandwiches in San Diego and Los Angeles. I liked the concept, so I taught Kelton the business. The challenge was to learn how to keep them from melting in Miami’s heat. But we did it.” From their purple, graffiti-clad food truck, they sold their favorite handcrafted ice cream sandwiches made from smallbatched cookies, ice creams, and toppings like almond chips, Fruity Pebbles cereal, and cookie crumbles along Wynwood’s artsy streets. McMillon says that a best seller is the Churro: a pair of sugar cookies and a scoop of vanilla ice cream, all rolled in Cinnamon Toast Crunch Churro cereal. Then there’s the popular PB&J, consisting of strawberry ice cream layered between two peanut butter cookies. There are even vegan-friendly options like the Secret Vegan, which is made from vegan chocolate chip cookies and vegan vanilla (coconut milk) ice cream covered in sliced almonds. Innovative combos like these caught on quickly with consumers. Over the next few years, business boomed. Today, Wynwood Parlor is a full-scale catering, wholesale, and retail operation with nationwide delivery via Goldbelly. SEPTEMBER 2021

And McMillon says the expansion plans don’t stop there. “I’m launching a pop-up at Southgate Towers in Miami Beach with plans to expand to North Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and other [South Florida] cities,” says McMillon. It’s no wonder McMillon and Richardson are taking time to celebrate their sweet success. At their Oasis Bar party, even the beverages featured frozen delights. Guests sipped from a selection of Champagnes with sorbet—Miami Made Frosés (peach, pear, white grape, and lemon and lime juices blended with strawberry pureé and Band of Roses Rosé) and Peach Bellinis (peach nectar and peach purée with Moët Imperial Ice Champagne). Because you can’t just gorge yourself on ice cream sandwiches and mini milkshakes from the get-go, guests were treated to appetizers beautifully displayed on Batillardo Boards that Osteria Morini Miami decked out with fruit, crudités, cheeses, and spreads. But what’s an ice cream party without ice cream? At last the cool culinary centerpieces were served—including the Bedrock (red velvet cookies and vanilla ice cream rolled in Fruity Pebbles), the Classic (chocolate chip cookies and vanilla ice cream rolled in mini chocolate chips), the Limoncello Cake (limoncello-soaked lemon

cookies with vanilla ice cream), the Bourbon Spice Cake (bourbonsoaked spice cake cookies with vanilla ice cream), the Bourbon Chocolate Cinnamon (bourbon-soaked double chocolate cookies with cinnamon ice cream), and the Mister 305 (guava white chocolate chip cookies with vanilla ice cream). As guests indulged (and kept brain freeze at bay), they gathered around tables that popped with white and coral floral arrangements. “Our concept was to add artsy flair to the modern tropical glam vibe,” says Tarike Hyde, chief event stylist for Events by Boosh (a.k.a. “the Queen of Details”). “I was inspired by the artwork displayed in the ice cream parlor, and I wanted details to exude luxury.” That artwork consists of a series of whimsical murals featuring characters eating ice cream sandwiches. Created by artist Nate Dee, their palette of bright colors matches the hues of the ice cream sandwiches. In a special nod, the mural behind the dining table was done by Nicole Salgar—the artist who painted that original purple food truck that started it all. “All of my art is inspired by Wynwood and the graffiti artists who made the area what it is today,” says McMillon. “I love to support local artists, and I intend to keep the spirit of Wynwood in my new locations.” «

From top: Osk ceviche and mariscos al fuego

COURTESY OSAKA NIKKEI MIAMI

Stemming from the Japanese diaspora in Peru, flavor-rich Nikkei cuisine has commanded the Latin American foodie movement for nearly a decade. Now, this hybrid is finally disrupting Miami’s restaurant scene thanks to the opening of Osaka, arguably South America’s most celebrated name in Nikkei cuisine. Following successful outposts in five Latin American capitals, Osaka’s gastronomic ingenuity reaches downtown’s Brickell neighborhood, housed in a seductive, eco-chic, vibe-heavy space. Buckle up for an international culinary journey, beginning with osk ceviche: large, tender cubes of tuna dressed in rocoto yuzu sauce and tossed with crispy quinoa. Next, choose between eight sublime nigiris, including the requisite hotate (scallop) truffle, torched tableside. Then, ooh and ahh over the mariscos al fuego (flaming seafood) followed by the heartier niku kabayaki, a soy-glazed Wagyu skirt steak, sizzling atop hot stones. This extraordinary Peruvian-Japanese marriage extends to the cocktail menu, too. Imbibe on a pisco-based Aka Sour with cardamom syrup and purple corn ice or a lightly smoked Lapsang Negroni, rooted in roku gin and shochu, and enveloped by an aromatic cloud of black tea. In short, prepare to fully immerse in Peru’s Japanese heritage by way of gastronomy and mixology—no passport required. (osakanikkei.com)

Adding to Miami’s growing roster of eclectic global eateries is Como Como at Moxy South Beach, a new-fashioned take on an old-fashioned Mexican marisquería (seafood restaurant) and raw bar. Noted chef Scott Linquist of Coyo Taco fame remixes time-honored coastal Mexican recipes by incorporating local catches and firing hot dishes over hardwood, mesquite charcoal, or within a Josper charcoal oven. Don’t miss the conversation-worthy pescado a la talla, a butterflied, fire-roasted snapper served open-face and prepared two ways: green on one side with jalapeño cilantro garlic butter and red on the other with ancho chile garlic butter and separated by a baby heirloom tomato salad. Or experience the singular, robust flavors of Mexico’s Mayan coast with tikin-xic, a traditional preparation of a whole branzino, basted in bitter orange, habanero chiles, and achiote and

OFF THE VINE

Italy's ALPINE Wines

Wines from ALTO ADIGE are shaped by Alpine elevations and Adriatic breezes

By Mark Spivak The wines of Alto Adige are not widely known in this country, which is probably a good thing: If Americans realized how special they are, you’d never be able to find them. At their best, they have vivid fruit, electric acidity, and a palate presence that is compelling and memorable. Alto Adige (also known as Südtirol) is Italy’s northernmost wine region, located just below Austria. While white varieties predominate (notably Riesling, Sauvignon, Gewürztraminer, and of course Pinot Grigio), some excellent reds are also made. Most wineries are still familyowned, and this is an exciting time in the region, as a new generation is taking over at some of the area’s top properties. Alois Lageder: Regarded by many as Alto Adige’s iconic winery, Alois Lageder was 88

established in 1823 and is managed by Alois Lageder, a descendent of the original founder. All three of his children are now involved, too: his successor Alois Clemens Lageder plus his daughters Anna (who coordinates special events) and Helena (who serves as brand ambassador). The family’s 135 acres of vineyards are farmed biodynamically, and the solar-powered winery is committed to sustainability. Lageder’s large portfolio contains dozens of wines. He cultivates unique white-grape varieties such as Manzoni Bianco as well as regional specialties like Lagrein and Schiava. His best-known red is the Cor Römigberg Cabernet Sauvignon ($60), a complex, concentrated wine with exotic spice notes, supple tannins, and rich flavors of cherries and blackcurrants. (aloislageder.eu) Tiefenbrunner: Founded in 1848, the winery is currently run by the fifth generation (Christof and Sabine) as the sixth (Johannes) studies winemaking in Germany while being groomed to take over the estate. Tiefenbrunner produces four distinct lines of wine, categorized according to the elevation, position, and quality of the vineyard site. At the top of the range is the Feldmarschall

Von Fenner Müller-Thurgau, which demonstrates exactly how good that grape variety can be in the right hands. The 2018 ($55) has an unctuous texture, sparkling acidity, accents of minerals and white pepper, and a long finish with echoes of stone fruits and quince. (tiefenbrunner.com) Elena Walch: Julia and Karoline Walch are working alongside their mother, who was an architect before she founded the winery in 1988. She has assembled more than 100 acres of estate vineyards in prime locations to produce singlevarietal whites, blends, and reds. Her entry-level 2019 Gewürztraminer ($22) has a floral nose and an exotic range of tropical fruit, tinged with honeysuckle in a bone-dry texture. The 2018 Castel Ringberg Pinot Grigio ($26), from the largest single vineyard in Alto Adige, offers a rich and complex mix of citrus, peach, and minerals. In addition to indigenous red varieties,

Walch also produces Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. (elenawalch.com) Cantina Valle Isarco: Tucked away in the most northerly vineyard area of Alto Adige, this co-operative celebrates its sixtieth anniversary this year. The 130 growers farm predominantly white-wine grapes on their 350 acres. The modern winery facility at Chiusa is supervised by the young, dynamic winemaker Hannes Munter. Because the co-operative is comparatively large, their wines are available at more U.S. retail outlets. The 2020 Pinot Grigio is fragrant and seductive, filled with ripe stone

fruit on the palate; the crisp 2019 Sauvignon displays flavors of grapefruit and minerals in the mouth. For a change of pace, try the 2019 Kerner ($20), a hybrid created by crossing Riesling and Trollinger. Fresh and racy, its medium-bodied texture exhibits notes of citrus and apple along with hints of tropical fruit. (kellerei-eisacktal.it) «

LAST LOOK From left: artwork from “Infinity” and “Out of the Darkness” series

Johnathan Schultz often utilizes precious metals in his collections; inset: “I Got Board” series.

GLOBAL ARTISTRY South African artist Johnathan Schultz is often inspired by the precious metals and diamonds found in his native country that he integrates into mixed media works of art. His goal throughout his artistic career has always remained the same: “to make the impossible a reality.” Fans of Schultz can catch a glimpse of his latest works September 1719 at the Aventura Mall. On display include pieces from his “Diamond” series, composed of sculptures and canvas with diamond imagery and intricately placed white diamonds of varying sizes. He’s also showcasing a collection of skateboards covered in either 23-karat gold leaf, platinum, or graphic elements that he designed during the pandemic. Drawing inspiration from world leaders, such as Nelson Mandela, paired with one-of-a-kind artifacts from Robben Island, South Africa, where Mandela was imprisoned, Schultz’s “Out of the Darkness” series features 23-karat gold leaf and pure 18-karat gold Mandela handprints. Catch a second look at Schultz’s work when he returns to Art Basel December 2-5 as a featured artist for the Le Art Noir Diversity in Color exhibition. (thejohnathanschultz.com) —Melissa Puppo
