FROM THE EDITOR
October is that time of the year when our thoughts turn to home and nesting. Be it because of the impending holidays, the cooler weather, or the return of our seasonal residents, gathering at home has never been more front of mind. For this home-themed issue, we take you inside the Palm Island residence of cover model Maria Buccellati. Maria, you likely know, is the uber-stylish creative director of Faith Connexion, and her creativity extends to her abode. Naturally, everything about the house is chic and elegant, but what really makes it home is the people who fill it. Maria loves to host other creatives and be surrounded by the energy of friends, and this home, with its open plan and abundant light, allows her to do just that. Read more about this powerhouse and her Miami lifestyle in “No Place Like Home,” starting on page 54. This month, we also feature some of our top local designers and their favorite rooms. In “Playing Favorites” (page 74), we visit spaces that have lingered in designers’ minds long after the project was completed. From a modern outdoor oasis to a bathroom that wouldn’t look out of place in a luxury hotel, we have gathered inspiration from the pros that is pure eye candy. And since everyone is busy building or renovating at the moment, the story has a practical application, too. We round out the issue with a fashion editorial that will get you revved up for a fall wardrobe refresh. Sophisticated looks for day and night—juxtaposed with equally elegant automobiles—speak to our collective renewed interest in dressing up and living life to the fullest. See all the sartorial possibilities in “Auto Motives” on page 64. Happy reading!

NIGHTLIFE
CABARET Nights The seats are plush, the lighting is low, and the cocktails are made just right. Dazzling cabaret-themed nights are alive and well in Wynwood with the opening of Le Rouge nightclub and lounge. The 7,000-squarefoot venue offers an exotic journey to a bygone era. It’s intimate enough for date night yet lively enough for larger social gatherings, with an immersive design centered around a 360-degree DJ booth that’s draped in red velvet and can accommodate a 10-piece band. Concept is king here, and guests can enjoy elevated VIP seating during musical acts and whimsical performances, while the chic outdoor patio and bar are brought to life with state-of-the-art concert sounds, lighting, video, and 3D mapping projection systems. THE GOODTIME HOTEL
A collaboration between hospitality guru David Grutman and singer/songwriter Pharrell Williams, The Goodtime Hotel on Miami Beach celebrates the opulence and nostalgia of the Art Deco aesthetic over nearly 100,000 square feet of public space. Ken Fulk’s whimsical design, anchored by peachy pink and vintage green, sets the scene for a stay that’s sure to impress. During the day, relax in a cabana on the rooftop deck underscored by two parallel pools. This outdoor space is also home to a rotating roster of global musicians and entertainment. When not sunbathing, utilize the property’s beach club, gym equipped with Peloton equipment, and a quaint library outfitted with an array of quirky objets d’art. The hotel’s crown jewel is Strawberry Moon, a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant offering classic dishes with an updated twist. If you go, order executive chef Ian Fleischmann’s take on spicy feta and the oh-so-delicious moon bread with fig tahini butter. (thegoodtimehotel.com)
This new outpost on Washington Avenue exudes playful South Beach vibes. Moxy’s 202 rooms are bright, unpretentious, and colorful, and the hotel houses six dining and drinking concepts to boot. Among the favorites are Serena, an open-air rooftop bar and restaurant that channels the alfresco patio dining of Oaxaca and Mexico City. After spending the afternoon on a daybed or cabana by the funky lounge pool, be sure to explore Moxy’s sprawling rooftop offerings and outdoor screening areas. (marriott.com)

» BUY SIMILAR HANGERS. I prefer velvet hangers in a singular color because they save space and look great. No matter what hangers you use, make sure they’re all similar. » MAXIMIZE YOUR SPACE. Closet space always dictates how I organ-

CULTURE
The Artist’s Studio
Thanks to Zero Empty Spaces, artists can easily create and COLLABORATE One of the challenges Zero Empty Spaces set out to fix in 2019 is helping artists find a place to work. Since its inception, the rapidly growing artist studio/vacancy management company has set up affordable studios in vacant spaces around South Florida and beyond. Artists can create and collaborate in designated locations from Sarasota to Doral, including a new studio space at The Village at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach. “We came up with the idea of Zero Empty Spaces after hearing from multiple artists we met at our annual art fair—Art Fort Lauderdale—about
Zero Empty Spaces’ newest studio space is located at Gulfstream Park Village. 26
where they could find affordable artist studios,” says Andrew Martineau, the initiative’s co-founder. With a background in retail development and as a consultant for shopping center developers, Martineau is used to strategizing to curate events, drive traffic and sales, and find creative ways to activate vacant spaces. “We combined the popular, short-term leasing strategies utilized by shopping centers with the benefits of having an otherwise vacant space active and created working artist studios,” he says. In return, Zero Empty Spaces helps to grow the appreciation of all genres of art and creates thriving cultural communities at each location’s surrounding city. A mix of local and international artists looking to develop their art and turn it into a viable business venture are among those renting spaces. “Miami needs more affordable artist studios where artists can create and showcase their
work, in addition to subsidized living for artists,” says Martineau. “The city also needs more opportunities for artists of all genres to be able to work full-time in their field.” He says incredible things happen when artists don’t have to worry about making enough money to put a roof over their heads. “Historically, patronage of individual artists was something that gave status to individuals, but now much of that patronage goes to institutions instead of to individual artists,” he adds. “Artists like Michelangelo were entirely funded by the Vatican. All he did was create, and look at what came out of that.” In addition to Hallandale, Zero Empty Spaces will be opening new locations in downtown Fort Lauderdale and the Warehouse District in West Palm Beach. Seriously SWEET
This Halloween, share spooky stories over a DIY CANDY BOARD KIT By Nicole Schubert Festive gatherings have never been more fun than with the addition of a gourmet board from South Florida’s Beauty & The Board. Founded by Elle Mawardi in 2019, her grazing board service offers entertaining mavens a variety of luxe, tasty options that are sure to bring guests together. With your choice of ready-to-serve or DIY options, the boards are “the perfect gastronomic adventure, allowing people to come together and spark conversation,” shares Mawardi. The idea to start the business stemmed from her wanting to recreate nostalgic memories of family get-togethers. She sought to build a brand focused on the ethos of “gather around and be our guest.” Since its inception, Beauty & The Board has been trending along South Florida’s coastline with wow-worthy arrangements, traditional cheese and charcuterie platters, and wildly whimsical DIY kits. All are crafted using environmentally sustainable birchwood boards, packaging, and disposables. Her brand not only brings authentic epicurious experiences into people’s homes but instills the importance of human interactions and sharing food and time with family and friends. This Halloween, Mawardi is sending her followers on a sweet adventure with a new DIY candy board packed with every confection connoisseur’s favorite treats. You’ll find an array of colorful sour and sweet jellies in various shapes to satisfy Elle Mawardi

everyone’s cravings. “With a colorful step-by-step guide, our DIY candy board is sure to be a sweet treat for the entire family,” she says. “We encourage our customers to have fun along the way and add their personal touch while building.” In addition to candy creations, Beauty & The Board will be offering additional specials through Thanksgiving. Choose from “seasonal accoutrements that are both high-quality and delicious,” says Mawardi. Year-round offerings comprise the signature classic, vegetarian, vegan, cookie board, bread and cracker board, and a DIY Insta-worthy cheese kit shipped nationwide via Goldbelly. Recently, Mawardi also launched individually sized mini charcuterie crates. (beautyandtheboard.com)

eep in the pine forests of Montana, about a halfhour’s drive from Missoula, a new resort is changing the game for sophisticated travelers with a passion for the great outdoors. The Green O—a riff on Greenough, the town closest to the property—is a gated enclave of 12 exclusive, adults-only wilderness retreats within a 37,000-acre cattle and bison ranch that also houses the sprawling Resort at Paws Up. Literally, The Green O is situated about 450 yards from the closest point of contact with Paws Up; figuratively, it is miles apart. Because Paws Up, with its glamping tents and timber cabins, is geared toward families, the owners created this private sanctuary for couples and solo travelers seeking a refined experience with the biggest luxury of all: peace and quiet. By day, Green O guests can participate in all the wilderness adventures of the greater resort, including ATV exploration, horseback riding, hiking, fly-fishing, and clay shooting, but they can return to the tranquility of a secluded treehouse, the intimacy of cocktails by the fire, and the culinary theater of a nine-course tasting menu by a master chef. The best part? Privacy. The Green O is maxed out at 12 homes, or 24 guests, says Laurence Lipson, who co-founded Paws Up and The Green O with his late father, Dave, and his father’s wife, Nadine. “It was really critical to keep it small and intimate. It enables us to offer a more personalized level of service.” Elevated design was a top priority. The Lipsons envisioned freestanding houses with innovative forms and a

modern spin on Montana’s architectural vernacular. While native materials like Douglas fir and local stone ground each “haus” in sustainability, the biggest driving point of the design is glass. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls that blur boundaries act as a transparent skin between interior spaces and the timberland of Big Sky Country. The feeling is one of living outdoors. Of the four original designs, the Tree Haus is the most eye-popping. Lipson calls it “an architectural gem in the forest,” pointing to its surprising modern architecture based on hexagonal shapes and an inner cylindrical core around which spaces are oriented. Climbing a spiral staircase to the third level, like a child in a secret clubhouse, you arrive at a spacious bedroom suite with a bird’s-eye view of the ponderosas and larches. Clad in Douglas fir and stone, the Round Haus offers curved openings into the wilderness and a panoramic view. Its footprint is inspired by the infinity sign, with two interrelating loops that form living and sleeping quarters. The Green Haus is the model of sustainability, with a live roof that acts as insulation and camouflage within nature—and ups the wow factor of its rooftop deck. The Green Haus’ coolest feature is a bedroom skylight, roughly the dimensions of a king-size bed, that makes you feel like you’re sleeping under the stars. The Light Haus is the largest of the four plans and is designed as a house within a house. The greenhouse-like bedroom, with glass on three sides, pushes out of the main structure into the woods for consummate forest bathing. Throughout The Green O, sensitivity to the environment is key. Woods are stained to match the coloration of the tree bark, so buildings can disappear into the woodland. The top-

soil used around the property comes from the working cattle and bison ranch, complete with growing oats, barley, and alfalfa. Even the cart paths are gravel mixed with recycled asphalt millings to keep the dust down and the noise to a minimum. But what’s a haus in the woods without a proper meal and a fortifying cocktail or two? The heart of The Green O is the Social Haus— a lodge, if you will—presided over by chef Brandon Cunningham, a transplant from Portland, Oregon, who cooks with the seasons and favors locally foraged, farmed, and raised ingredients like elk, bison, huckleberries, and honeycomb. Dinner at Social Haus is a ninecourse feast, where exquisitely crafted small plates are presented by the chefs themselves, adding to the club-like atmosphere of the place. At The Green O, the forest-dwelling concept is elevated to its highest purpose: an immersion in nature with the promise of adventure and the luxury of high design. (thegreeno.com) «

MAXIMUM Fun
Mini’s NEW-LOOK John Cooper Works convertible puts the thrill back in driving By Howard Walker Cars have gotten so serious. All lane-departure warnings and advanced driver-assist, all active braking and automatic lane-centering. Engage autopilot in a Tesla and it’s no wonder drivers fall asleep at the wheel. Yes, it’s about keeping you safe and secure. But all this automotive nannying tends to make driving about as much fun as watching paint dry. That’s why, before we all start getting piloted around in our autonomous, self-driving, electric SUVs, you need a Mini—especially a Mini convertible. And for more smiles than a can of laughing gas, opt for the adorable Mini John Cooper Works convertible. This is the most hilarious, grin-inducing,
endorphin-packed bundle of testosteroneenriched joy I’ve driven in ages. And that includes 200-mph supercars and thundering 700-horsepower sedans. Here is a true analog car in a digital world, a throwback to the Swinging ’60s. It is pure Michael Caine in The Italian Job and Austin “Shagadelic” Powers. Yeah, baby. The instant you slide behind the wheel, toggle the switch that whizzes the canvas roof back in 18 seconds, pull the shift into drive, and hit it, you just can’t help but smirk. It’s a feeling akin to being a kid on Christmas morning or getting your first puppy. This pint-sized pocket-rocket transforms every mundane trip—dry cleaners, here we
come—into a thrill ride. It’s the surgical precision of the steering, the tightness of the suspension, the superglue-like grip of the tires. There are go-karts that don’t feel this nimble or alive. While the base Mini convertible comes with a turbocharged 3-cylinder motor packing a meager 134-horsepower (which, come on, there are Toro ride-on mowers with more power) it’s the John Cooper Works you’ll want. Its feisty 2-liter turbo 4-cylinder cranks out 228 horses. Coupled to a quickshifting 8-speed automatic, it’ll slingshot the drop-top from standstill to 60 mph in a zippy 6.3 seconds. In case you’re wondering about that John

Cooper Works badge, it’s an homage to the legendary British racer John Cooper. Back in 1961, he spruced up the very first Mini to create the Mini Cooper and built racing versions that dominated motorsports for decades. In our Zesty Yellow JCW convertible— a new color for 2022—the Cooper connection means an extra 39 horsepower, a sports exhaust that delivers a symphony of lovely crackles and pops, sports suspension and Brembo brakes, and eyepopping 18-inch JCW Track Spoke alloys. You also get some body add-ons, like that horizontal red bar across the front grille and a bold rear diffuser. Inside there are JCW paddle shifters and a salami-thick napa leather wheel, plus grippy sports seats with extra side and under-thigh bolstering. Delve into the options list to customize your Cooper with everything from a full body kit and two-tone paint to adjustable suspension and even a Union Jack flag woven into the canvas top. Yes, there’s a compromise or two. The trade-off for that no-roll cornering is a ride that’s pretty firm and fidgety. In sport mode, the front wheels will struggle for grip when you hit the gas as red lights turn green. And if you’re planning on sharing the fun with friends, that rear seat is fairly tight on knee room. In fact, it’s best used for extra luggage space to compensate for the teeny trunk. Plus, regardless of whether the top is up or down, rear visibility is also a challenge. But I love this car. I adore the way it makes every trip a blast, the open-air feel, and the look. You’ll pay $38,900 for a 2022 JCW convertible, but you’ll want to add the $6,000 Iconic trim package to get upgraded navigation and the head-up display, along with dynamic damper control and a booming Harman/Kardon stereo. All totaled, you’re looking at around $46,000 very nicely loaded. As for putting the fun back in driving and a huge smile on your face? Priceless. Absolutely priceless. «

Green HORNET
Italian boatbuilder Tecnomar has partnered with Lamborghini to create a 4,000-horsepower, supercar-inspired speed demon By Howard Walker
T
hey call the shimmering shade of metallic green Verde Gea. It’s the same dark olive hue Lamborghini uses on its outrageous, $2.6-million Sián supercar, the most powerful road-going Lambo ever built, and the company’s first-ever hybrid. Look closely and you’ll spy a multitude of Lamborghini-esque design cues and features. The steering wheel is modeled after the one on the Aventador supercar, minus the airbag and paddle shifters, naturally. As for those high-back, carbon-fiber helm seats, they’re just like those in Lamborghini’s hard-core Huracán Evo, even down to the yellow racing seatbelts. What you have here with this all-new, $3.5-million Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 is nothing less than a true Lamborghini for the sea. While plenty of luxury carmakers have partnered with boatbuilders to attach their badge to a yacht—Aston Martin, Porsche, Bugatti, and Lexus, to name a few—none of the efforts has been as convincing or as authentic as this. Lamborghini’s Centro Stile designers worked closely with Tuscany-based Tecnomar (part of the Italian Sea Group)
to come up with the jaw-dropping lines of this bold 63-footer. And this is the height of visual drama. From its needle-nosed bow to its angled hull windows, its open transom to its swept-back, carbon-fiber hardtop, this superboat screams performance. One interesting omission is the source of the 63’s awesome power. Even though Lamborghini has a marine division that builds 900-horsepower marine V-12 gas engines for use in World Offshore Series race boats, it seems they weren’t quite potent enough for the waterborne Lambo. Instead, the 63 features twin German-built MAN V-12 turbo diesels cranking out 2,000 horsepower a piece. Mated to drag-reducing surface drives, they punch this 24-ton rocket ship to a top speed of almost 70 mph, while throwing up massive rooster tails out the back. Throttle back to a more sedate 45 mph, and the 63 should be able to run for more than 240 miles between fill-ups of its 950-gallon tank. That’s Miami to Nassau with fuel to spare. The big Lamborghini will have no trouble tackling washing machine seas if the weather takes a turn for the worse.

his past summer, Maria Buccellati posed on a Jet Ski after dark for photographer Ellen von Unwerth in Miami Beach, before jetting off to Cairo to show the Faith Connexion Summer 2021 collection. No ordinary fashion brand president, Buccellati sported Faith frocks with the Giza pyramids as her backdrop, both looking the part— she called herself Maria of Arabia, a nod to the 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia—and promoting the line she has helmed since 2017. Then it was back to the States, where she stopped in New York for the opening of Public Hotel by Ian Schrager, an immersive art experience at Super Real, and a visit to the yetto-be-opened private club Casa Cipriani, where she is a founding member. But, even after all her glamorous travels, it was a grainy Instagram video clip of her in a car that may have captured where her heart truly resides. Wearing a white Faith Connexion asymmetrical gypsy dress, she danced in the backseat and sang along with Carlos Santana’s “Maria Maria”: “Maria Maria She reminds me of a West Side story Growin’ up in Spanish Harlem She’s livin’ a life just like a movie star” The caption read “Back to Miami,” but the joy on her face was worth more

than a thousand words. Maria Buccellati—who indeed lives her life like a movie star—was heading home to the sleek four-bedroom, two-story residence on Palm Island that she purchased in 2018. Though she has long divided her time between New York and Paris, her Miami retreat may very well become her primary residence. It is closer to her daughter, Lucrezia, and her family, who live in Palm Beach, and the area is home to friends and a healthy lifestyle Buccellati has truly come to enjoy, especially during the pandemic. Creativity can happen anywhere, after all. “I’m loving it here,” she says. “I’ve been here for the past year during the pandemic, and I’m really loving reconnecting with friends and people I haven’t seen in a while. I’m also enjoying the healthy environment. It’s so beautiful to wake up in a place with the ocean nearby and the sunshine. Plus, there’s this energy here that I used to feel in New York. People are coming here. I feel all the cultures, and it is becoming one of the major cities for art and fashion and creativity.” Buccellati is no stranger to the city. Born in New York, Buccellati (née Cabrera) grew up in Miami and went to art school here before meeting Eileen Ford, who convinced her to become a model. Dividing her time between New York and Miami after she was discovered, Buccellati posed for Sheila Metzner at Vogue during the Polly Mellen era as she finished her degree. Then came the shows. Buccellati walked with Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford in Italy for Dolce & Gabbana right before the brand became hot, and eventually became its muse. “They saw me as a Sicilian Maria Callas,” says Buccellati, referring to the American-born Greek opera singer often referred to as La Divina (“The Divine One”). Divine in her own right, Buccellati modeled for other designers, but says Dolce & Gabbana remained “very inside of my heart.” While in Milan, she met her then-husband Andrea Buccellati (of the century-old luxury jewelry brand Buccellati), raised two children, and launched a swim brand. But she also found herself giving designers advice on everything from developing their collections to their business structure. In 2011, Buccellati became an advisor to Faith Connexion, a Paris-based brand founded in 2002 that mixes high fashion with street wear. “I loved the brand, and it had a big chance to make it, but it had to be developed,” she explains. Faith Connexion brought in investors and targeted designers from Balmain to elevate it to the next level. It took a few years, Buccellati says, but by 2016, Faith was the brand of the moment, often talked about and copied as it grew its global distribution in stores such as Barneys, Harrods, and Saks Fifth Avenue. Celebrities like Ariana Grande, Jay-Z, LeBron James, and Alicia Keys were widely photographed wearing Faith pieces, while producer/rapper/DJ/entrepreneur Swizz Beats not only invested in the company but developed an 11-piece capsule collection for it too. Buccellati moved to Paris in 2017 and took over as

brand president before the pandemic hit. Since then, she has hired new co-creative directors and relaunched it to be a tighter, simpler operation that’s closer to its production center in Milan. Like moving to Miami, the strategy is healthier in the long run. “I think since the beginning of Faith Connexion, the idea was to slow down the fashion cycle,” says co-creative director Alexandre Bertrand. “It goes too fast, which means it goes too fast for the human beings working there. We used to produce too much too often, and so we would lose control of OCTOBER 2021

what we created and distributed. Slowing down the cycle is better for the humans working there and better for the whole environment.” Faith Connexion is like a family, notes Bertrand and his co-creative director, Myriam Bensaid. That’s partly due to Buccellati’s trust in them and what they create, but also to the brand’s stated aim to be more inclusive. Bertrand, who is gay, grew up in the French countryside and says the road to self-acceptance was hard for him in his youth. Bensaid, for her part, comes from a Moroccan family and worked in menswear, two factors that she believes made life difficult for her. Bertrand and Bensaid are close, and because of their experiences feeling like outsiders, they want Faith Connexion to embrace rather than eschew diversity in all its forms. Buccellati has been supportive of that, they say. “We want to show people what else is possible, and also have a bit of fun,” adds Bensaid. This new era, with its focus on sustainability and inclusivity, has opened up opportunities for Faith Connexion that are currently in the works. For now, Buccellati seems happy that her own path has taken her back to her hometown. Prior to leaving for Egypt, she hosted a private party at her home for fellow designer and friend Alvin Valley, who opened a pop-up shop at The Ritz-Carlton South Beach. She says she loves being surrounded by creative people like him and being able to host them at her home. Of course, she’s also a regular on the beach and at the Saxony Bar at the Faena Hotel Miami Beach, because she “likes the world of it.” She is also a founding member of Casa Tua and a habitué of local art museums and live music venues. “It’s not just all work for me,” she says. “I realize how much I have [to be grateful for] and how much I have around me. This time has helped me to be stronger and believe in the things I am doing.” Eventually, Buccellati envisions developing an incubator for fashion, art, and other forms of self-expression in the city. Right now, she’s working with her team to find the space and forge partnerships with brands that can help creative people develop their ideas. Perhaps there will be a prize attached to this project too. “I am really focusing on Miami as my city,” she concludes. “I’ve enjoyed it so much, and it can be such a base for a world of creativity.” «

Living in a climate where outdoor entertaining is a yearround activity, it’s paramount to have a comfortable space to host family and friends. That’s the idea behind this Venetian Islands backyard designed by Candace Matlock, senior designer of Italkraft in Miami. “People tend to want to invest more in their indoor spaces, so outdoor spaces tend to be an afterthought,” she says. “This is a great example of how it can really pay off to invest in an outdoor
kitchen, which has become more valuable during the pandemic.” The kitchen—which started with a blank wall—received an elevated update of a 42-inch bar, plus an overhang to create a shaded area for cooking and eating, as well as appliances including a grill, under-counter refrigerator, ice maker, and more. Not wanting to distract from the home’s modern architecture, Matlock and her team incorporated stainless steel with white countertops and “topof-the-line” finishes for an elegant, minimalist look. For 40 years, Juan Montoya has been working on residential interior design projects around the world, making him one of the most prolific designers today. He’s based in New York City but often works with South Florida clientele, including the homeowners of this Miami Beach residence. “The homeowner is very spiritual,” explains Montoya. “She is an astrologer, so I wanted to create a very spiritual sanctuary.” He began looking for a Hindu temple and discovered his inspiration in northwest Cambodia’s Angkor Wat—the largest religious structure in the world by land area. With that in 76
mind, he transformed the dining room into a calming space with a neutral color palette. “We have a lot of exotic and ethnic elements in the room, so we wanted to keep a Zen feeling,” says Montoya. Design highlights include carved-stone colonnades from India, a dining room table surrounded by 1960s chairs, and massive laundry chests from Hong Kong that flank a photograph the homeowner took while in Africa. What Montoya likes most is the juxtaposition of different elements, textures, and cultures. (juanmontoyadesign.com)

Based in Miami, Sabrina Maclean of Hino Studio has been designing for over a decade—first with her mother when she started the firm, and now as she helms the business. She works with clients in South Florida, Mexico, and Latin America. For this project at the Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club in Surfside, the owner—who is an avid art collector— wanted the dining room “to be a statement while remaining clean and modern so as not to compete with the art throughout the apartment,” says Maclean. “The overarching millwork served this purpose well, delivering sleek lines and linear lighting that gave it just the right touch.” The color palette is neutral yet bold, allowing the materials, including steel, wood, leather, and marble, to speak for themselves and bring the room to life. Maclean and her team incorporated light oak wooden slats and linear LED lighting to frame the dining room, enveloping it in its own unique space apart from the rest of the residence. “I love this room especially because it is a beautiful example of the craftsmanship that comes with our Italian-made custom millwork, which over the years has become a studio signature,” says Maclean. SERENE ESCAPE Who doesn’t love a good hotel room bathroom, especially when it evokes the look and feel of a spa? Sandra Diaz-Velasco of Eolo A+I Design pulled off this inspiration to transform a Coral Gables bathroom into an escape with natural materials and clean lines. “The owner sought a dramatic space, while his wife wanted a luxurious retreat where she could enjoy a bath, shower, and Jacuzzi spa,” shares the Miami-based designer who works on homes in South Florida, South America, and Central America. Custom cabinetry from Sanandres Construction adds storage and function with a contemporary edge, and Alape sinks, Graff 78
faucets, and a Kohler Veil toilet lend a sleek, artistic feel. The color palette features natural stone, stained walnut paneling, and mattegold accents in the vanity mosaic and plumbing fixtures. “To soften the orthogonal interior architecture, an interplay of natural and artificial light provided smooth cascades of gentle, thoughtful highlights, while the clever placement of artwork and mirrors generated a subtle yet warmly felt sense of elegance and ease,” says Diaz-Velasco. Additional highlights include a sculptural, free-standing tub, natural stone elements, and decorative chandeliers. (eolodesigns.com)

TEENAGE DREAM

The homeowners of a South Miami property called on Nicole White and her eponymous design firm to redesign their abode, starting with the kids’ bedrooms. Her first task was to create a “sophisticated Parisian bedroom” for a teenager, says White, who has been designing homes across the U.S. and Caribbean for 12 years. The color palette utilizes a soft, timeless pink so the daughter won’t tire of the aesthetic in a few years. “The selections here were all done with her growing into this space fully without being bored,” says White. “We also wanted items that were whimsical à la Paris; hence the leaf mirror and bow-tied chair.” They added pink-painted molding throughout and jazzed up the space with full-size bedding, a desk and chair (which has proven handy for at-home schooling during the pandemic), and ottomans for extra seating to accommodate visiting friends. “It’s such an inviting and sophisticated space—the kind of bedroom I would have died to have as a teen,” says White. “I also love to showcase pink as a color anyone can grow into; it doesn’t need to be relegated to use only in a little girl’s room or nursery.” (nwdinteriors.com) « OCTOBER 2021

ABOUT THE LIST Adventura Magazine partnered with the firm Professional Research Services, which asked licensed Miami-Dade County attorneys who they would recommend, other than themselves, in the area. Attorneys were allowed to name up to three colleagues in each specialty. Nominees were then evaluated on the basis of the survey results, the status of their licenses, and their standing with The Florida Bar. Qualifying attorneys who received the highest number of votes are reflected on the following list.

Private Dining PRECISION
Next-generation ultra-luxury hits Miami’s restaurant scene with the debut of Haiku, the city’s sole membersonly “private restaurant experience.” At the By Paul Rubio helm of this Japanese, kaiseki-inspired concept are owner Jess Varughese and executive chef Albert Diaz (of Zuma London fame). Together, they host a single party nightly for a 10-12 course omakase-style dinner, inclusive of wine, Champagne, and sake pairings. Seasonality, guest preferences, and the duo’s travels throughout Japan inspire the meticulously prepared tasting menus.
093_GOURMAND_1021.indd 93
Highlights from a recent visit included the “Uni-Corn,” a Florida sweet corn chawanmushi (steamed custard) topped with Hokkaido uni, elderflower tempura with dashi and white balsamic, and butter-poached king crab with uni, yuzu koshu, and myoga. Not only is Haiku a sharp deviation from the traditional restaurant model, but it’s a clear departure from Wynwood’s hyper-colorful personality. The sleek, understated space is anchored by a 16-seat, U-shaped tasting counter, which lies beyond wood-carved screen doors, recalling the intimacy and sophistication of Tokyo’s micro-restaurants. Like all things private (think: planes, villas, and clubs), Haiku’s restaurant experience mandates deep pockets, including a membership initiation fee and a commitment of five reservations (with a minimum spend per resy) over 12 months. GOURMAND Neighborhood SPOTLIGHT
BAL HARBOUR
«
The petite village of Bal Harbour is most famous for its world-class shopping and ritzy condos, but it also hosts a small but mighty restaurant scene. Here, we highlight three of our top dining spots in the posh hamlet.
«
BH BURGER BAR
This high-brow take on an old-fashioned burger bar—crimson-colored cushioned booths and jukebox included—wows with piled-high, ingredient-rich beef and vegetarian burgers and other bar bites. BH Burger Bar’s signature is “The Frenchie,” a thick beef patty sandwiched between buttered brioche buns and layered with comté cheese, truffle aioli, frisée and arugula, caramelized onions, pickled shallots, and roasted tomatoes. Other options include a tower of loaded nachos and wings prepared seven different ways, from traditional buffalo to Thai chili glazed. Though these may not be the type of eats one would expect at the St. Regis Bal Harbour, who doesn’t love American comfort food at its best—with a bonus gourmet twist, no less. (stregisbalharbour.com)
«
THE ST. REGIS BAR & WINE VAULT
Eye-catching modern art, dark wood accents, mood lighting, and three-dimensional walls protruding with antique mirrors: The St. Regis Bar & Wine Vault embodies an idyllic ambience for languid evenings exploring an exalted wine list that spans 2,500 bottles from 450 vineyards and 14 countries. Mixology-forward cocktails are also on offer (Cuban mojito with French Kiss, anyone?) as is the St. Regis Bloody Mary; enthusiasts will recall that the famed cocktail was created at the St. Regis New York. But the true surprise here is a solid Japanese and shared plates menu strong enough to brand the venue a proper dinner destination. The St. Regis Bar rivals Miami’s sushi elite with its selections of sashimi, nigiri, and rolls, complemented by other pan-Asian dishes like steam short rib buns and Korean fried chicken. (stregis balharbour.com)
LE ZOO
Given its prime location within the luxe Bal Harbour Shops, this chic FrenchMediterranean restaurant is a picturesque spot to immerse in the town’s fabulous social scene. That being said, Le Zoo is so much more than the apex of people-watching. Interiors recall a bona fide Parisian brasserie and set the scene for a delightful mix of classic and modern French cuisine. Stick to traditional excellence, choosing from the likes of steak tartare, moules frites, duck confit, or chicken paillard. Alternatively, skew contemporary and order the truffle pizza, the flaming prawns, or the prestige plateau: a seafood tower underscored by Alaskan king crab and Crown Russian Ossetra caviar. (lezoo.com) —P.R. 94
COMING SOON Big deal restaurant names are coming to Bal Harbour in 2022, including an outpost of Sant Ambroeus, New York darling Felice, and Chicago favorite Aba.

A family that cooks together, stays together. Want proof? Just ask the Changs, a Miami-based Peruvian family receiving national acclaim for their wildly popular Nikkei-inspired restaurant, Itamae. After outgrowing an incubator space at the MIA Market food hall, the family, affectionately known as the “Chang Gang,” has opened a 4,000-square-foot brickand-mortar location in the Design District. The new location brings an expanded seafood-centric menu rife with the Peruvian and Japanese flavors that helped chefs Valerie and Nando Chang become the first brother-sister duo to be named “Rising Star Chef of the Year” semifinalists in the prestigious James Beard Awards. Dad, aka Fernando “Papa’’ Chang, also remains hard at work, crafting innovative and authentic piqueos (small bites), tiraditos, ceviches, sushi rolls, and bañadito rolls (a unique tiradito-sushi roll hybrid) in tandem with his talented kids. Among the menu standouts are torrejitas de choclo, classic Peruvian corn fritters and pulpo al olivo bañadito, a sushi roll of avocado and catch of the day, topped with octopus, botija olives, and spicy ají limo leche de tigre. STEAK HOUSE Superstars TWO TRIED-AND-TRUE SOUTH FLORIDA STEAK HOUSES CONTINUE TO PROVE THEIR CHOPS (PUN INTENDED) WITH THE BEST IN PRIME CUTS AND SEAFOOD
BOURBON STEAK
l
The talents and prowess of celebrity chef Michael Mina and his all-star team are on full display at Bourbon Steak in Aventura, where tender butter-poached steaks and superb seafood dishes vie for the limelight in a seductive, bustling space. Today’s style set and old money spendthrifts alike swoon over the taste and presentation of dishes like Mina’s tuna tartare, prepared tableside with minced Asian pear, pine nuts, jalapeños, habanero, and quail egg. Then there’s the chef’s signature Maine lobster potpie, steamed in brandy-truffle cream and delivered in a copper pot, bubbling with a buttery crust. Of course, the myriad mouthwatering cuts of prime Angus beef—blazed to perfection over the wood-fired grill—also merit attention, as do the decadent sides of garlic mashed potatoes and black truffle mac and cheese. Add to this foodie fantasy a 1,000-plus variety strong wine cellar, the dreamiest of desserts (hello: brown butter cake and Nutella cheesecake), and arguably the best service in Miami, and it’s easy to see why Bourbon Steak is widely regarded as Miami’s ultimate steak house experience. On the heels of turning 12, Fort Lauderdale’s celebrated Steak 954, from Stephen Starr’s Starr Restaurant Group, reimagines its food and drink menus with a slew of new Wagyu beef selections and eclectic seafood dishes. The cocktail menu under the direction of Jonathan Hernandez, former food and beverage director of hospitality juggernaut Bar Lab, also shines in its revamped glory. Experience Steak 954’s latest hits by starting with an appetizer of seared sea scallops, served atop celery root puree, fennel, and almonds. Then, move on to sweet and tender South African twin lobster tails with drawn butter and lemon, or the hearty local red snapper, prepared in a cioppino broth with ricotta dumplings. Alternatively, feast on a 5-ounce cut of melt-in-your-mouth, authentic Kobe strip (from Hyogo Prefecture, Japan) or a juicy, 8-ounce ribeye cap from Snake River Farms, Idaho. Wash it all down with a few rounds of spicy, blueberry jam–laced Steak 954 Margaritas, toasting to a much-welcomed, flavorful reinvention of a classic meal. (steak954.com) —P.R.

AUTUMN APERITIVO
Fall is finally upon us, and with the cooler season comes many of our favorite autumnal pastimes—hello backyard campfires, football games, and harvest festivals. There’s never any shortage of fun seasonal activities, all of which seem to pair perfectly with a flavorful fall cocktail (or two). This year, I’m exploring the season’s warm, comforting flavors without turning to the most famous squash seasoning. Instead, I’m reaching for a crisp dry cider and sparkling ginger beer. Paired with a bittersweet amaro (an Italian herbal liqueur), this simple, low-proof seasonal punch is elevated with bright citrus and warming aromatic notes. —Jules Aron

GOURMAND POUR
Secretive Sips
Many may imbibe but few can make these elusive LIQUEURS and bitters
By Mark Spivak
It may be a precarious business model, but some of the world’s greatest spirits are made using formulas known only to a handful of people. While these four examples are common behind bars, their recipes remain closely guarded secrets. CHARTREUSE For the Carthusian monks isolated in the western French Alps, life hasn’t changed since the founding of the order in 1084. The monastery is bathed in silence, and the monks have meals delivered to their cells through a small cubbyhole. In 1605, the order received a recipe for a potion composed of 130 herbs and plants. It evolved into three distinct liqueurs: the original Elixir Végétal ($180), at a whopping 138 proof or 69 percent alcohol, as well as Green ($65, 110 proof) and Yellow ($65, 80 proof). The Green and Yellow versions have gained fame as an ingredient in craft cocktails, while the “Elixir of Long Life” is reputed to have healing properties. Chartreuse is also popular in liqueur-based desserts, and a dish of peaches in Chartreuse jelly was planned for the final night of the Titanic sailing—until the iceberg intervened. Although 1.5 million bottles of Chartreuse are reportedly sold each year and royalties revert to the order, only two monks are privy to the full formula. BÉNÉDICTINE On the surface, the story of this famous liqueur sounds similar to Chartreuse. A monk named Friar Bernardo Vincelli supposedly produced Bénédictine at the Abbey of Fécamp in Normandy for centuries prior to the French Revolution, when the building was destroyed. In 1863, the wine merchant Alexandre Le Grand discovered an ancient manuscript and successfully reconstructed the recipe. In reality, there’s no evidence that Friar Bernardo 100 AVENTURA MAGAZINE
100_POUR_1021.indd 100
9/7/21 10:20 AM
actually existed, much less that he concocted Bénédictine. It’s a good story, though, and Le Grand’s blend of 27 spices and herbs proved to have considerable commercial appeal. Today only three people know the formula for the liqueur at any given time. CAMPARI Turin, Italy, was ground zero in the cocktail culture of the mid-nineteenth century, and it is where Gaspare Campari began his apprenticeship to become a maître liquoriste—not just a bartender, but someone who was qualified to create new alcoholic beverages. In 1860 he moved to Milan and began selling his creation to customers. It was a bitter infusion of 60 herbs, barks, and fruit peels into a mixture of alcohol and distilled water, and it became a sensation. With yearly sales of more than 3 million cases, Campari is now one of the most popular aperitifs in the world; it has become an
100_POUR_1021.indd 101
essential ingredient in classic cocktails such as the Negroni, Americano, and Boulevardier. Gaspare’s secret formula has been carefully passed down through the generations, known only to a select few within the company. It has been reported that even the CEO is unaware of the exact proportions. ANGOSTURA BITTERS It’s hard to find a bar without a bottle of Angostura, and many classic cocktails wouldn’t exist without it. A German doctor developed the formula in 1824, and it immediately became a cure-all for common ailments such as seasickness and gastric distress. The bitters have been manufactured in Trinidad since 1875, and only five people in the world are familiar with the details. They never travel together, and one of them has to be present whenever a new batch is manufactured— although the recipe is supposedly locked away in a U.S. bank in case of catastrophe. «

LAST LOOK
SPOOKTACULAR
Just in time for Halloween, Haunted Circus Miami is the ultimate thrill to enjoy this month. Fun for the whole family, the spooky carnival welcomes a cast of dubious characters, including ghost clowns, a mad ringmaster, contortionists, fire-eaters, and more. Guests will have the chance to solve a mystery involving an acrobat-lady—the long-lost beloved of a ringmaster who vanished into thin air. Legend says the circus won’t find its peace until her return. In addition to the circus elements, visitors can also take part in experiences such as pumpkin carvings, tarot readings, photoshoots, and a petting zoo. (hauntedcircusmiami.com) —Melissa Puppo
