Show of hands: Who has learned a ton over the past few weeks? During this unprecedented threat to our health, and to everything we hold dear, we’ve had to quarantine, learn to live alone together, make do with a lot less, and generally figure things out as we went along. But we’ve also had to stop and think about our actions. Was everyone around us safe? Did a friend or neighbor need our help? Were there supplies we could share with someone in need? If there was one positive thing about COVID-19, it was this coming together of community. Every cloud, as they say, has a silver lining. This month, in our Home & Design issue, we offer ideas for living better at home—that sanctuary that has become all-important during these weeks of isolation. With its new G 90 FLAGSHIP, Genesis redefines what a true LUXURY SEDAN should be By Howard Walker
Architectural rock star Frank Lloyd Wright once said, “Give me the luxuries of life and I will willingly do without the necessities.” With that philosophy in mind, I’m sure Wright would have loved this flagship 2020 G90 from Genesis. After all, it positively brims with life’s luxuries without skimping on all those necessities—such as wheels. And much as Wright strived to achieve during his prolific 70-year career, the G90 makes one heck of a design statement. Okay, let’s get that 800-pound gorilla out of the way first. Naturally, I’m referring to the grille. Love it or loathe it, it does command as much attention as a Mack truck in a china store. And that’s exactly the point: 28

Genesis wants this new G90 to get noticed, to stand out from the crowd, to start a conversation. Not that in-your-face grilles are anything new in the automotive world these days. BMW’s swollen kidneys on the latest 7 Series have become almost comically ginormous. Lexus’ spindle on the LS? It’s about as subtle as a plane crash. Ditto the chrome-infused maw on Audi’s A8. But I do like the diamond-pattern surface of the G90’s twinkling-chrome grille. It’s a motif repeated throughout the car, from the leather stitching inside to the headlights to the 19-inch alloys. And what awesome wheels they are. Complex, ornate without being cheesy, and total head-turners, they look like something you might spy on a $200-grand Mercedes-Maybach. In keeping with its flagship status, the G90 is a whopper. Stretching 205 inches bow to stern, it’s up there in size with such driveway hoggers as the Lexus LS, BMW 7, and Audi A8. But in the G90, almost every inch is dedicated to enhancing the comfort of those lucky enough to be ensconced inside. Take the rear seats, for example, which are nothing less than fully reclining La-Z-Boys. Slip off your Guccis, close your eyes, and

you’ll be at grandma’s house before you know it. Select the Ultimate package, and those rear loungers will come equipped with cooling and massage functions; the right seat will even boast an extendable footrest. Overall, the cabin’s quality and craftsmanship verges on Bentleyesque. There are acres of quilted Nappa leather, brushed-aluminum accents, and truly gorgeous open-pore wood. Genesis engineers also strived to create a pin-drop-quiet oasis by installing triple-sealed doors, insulated acoustic glass, and layer upon layer of sound-hushing materials. Out on the street, the big G throws off any pretensions of sportiness with a single-minded focus on noise-canceling refinement and silent running. The two engines available—a range-topping, 5.0-liter, 420-hp V-8, plus a 3.3-liter, twin-turbo, 365-hp V-6—are both kings of calm, propelling the G90 at triple-digit velocities with barely a murmur. Our Porto Red tester came with the turbine-smooth V-6, and in the 600-plus miles I shared with it over one blissful week of driving, I never lusted after the V-8. For all its refinement, the V-6 packs a mean punch. Mated to an alert,
super-smooth-shifting 8-speed automatic, it will rocket the G90 from standstill to 60 mph in a brisk 5.4 seconds. Yes, there’s a Sport setting to sharpen throttle response, add weight to the steering, and adjust the front seat side bolsters for added support. But, when it comes to highend long-distance travel, leave it in Comfort for an ultra-serene ride. To many, the real appeal of this flagship Genesis is going to be its competitive pricing. The range starts with the 3.3T at $73,195, with allwheel drive adding $2,500. The big 5.0 V-8 stickers at $76,695—many thousands less than the German competition. Add the fact that Genesis has snatched the top spot in the 2020 J.D. Power vehicle dependability study, and the new G90 has a lot going for it. Frank Lloyd would probably agree that this could well be the “Wright” choice. «

hile based in the Hamptons, Jack Pearson sought a seasonal escape from New York’s harsh winter months. He turned his attention to Miami Beach, where friends had introduced him to The Marquesa, a 1935 schoolhouse that had been converted into lowrise condominiums on historic Española Way. When a unit became available, he made an offer.
“When I saw The Marquesa, I knew how special the building was,” says Pearson, a real estate broker with New York–based Compass. The Spanish-influenced, eight-room schoolhouse had been renovated years ago into a charming, mustard-colored stucco building with five condominiums surrounding a Ushaped central courtyard. Each unit now features a French door leading to a garden blooming with verdant plants and palms. In the Hamptons, Pearson owns a 1920s
cottage. Seeking the same cozy feel in Miami Beach, he went about creating a coastal retreat with architectural detail and an aesthetic that embraces Bahamian influences and highlights his art collection. He enlisted the help of interior designer John Bjørnen, who had worked with him on the Hamptons house, to give the 750-square-foot, one-bed, one-bath space a much-needed facelift. “The apartment was dated,” says Bjørnen. “We gave it a renovation with clean paint and wood beams.” MAY/JUNE 2020

CARIBBEAN FEEL WITH MID-CENTURY FLAIR For the walls and ceiling, the team ordered Maine shiplap—six-foot vertical wooden boards with a groove cut into the top and bottom to create a tight fit—that was treated to combat humidity. Pearson opted for bright white lacquer paint throughout the living spaces, bedroom, and bath with bursts of vibrant orange, yellow, and nautical blues inspired by his art collection. “I loved this idea for the interior design,” says Pearson. “It reminds me of a vanilla ice cream cone with colorful sprinkles on top.” Pearson and Bjørnen sourced the furniture together. They agreed on custom pieces and a mix of 1930s to ’60s American, Italian, and French furnishings. “We liked the midcentury twist along with a fresh Caribbean feel and some vintage,” says Bjørnen, noting that Pearson culled design cues from his trips to the Bahamas. “The design has lots of 54
coastal flair.” The living room, dining area, and kitchen are one dynamic, open space, making smart use of the limited square footage. The living room is dominated by a custom sleeper sofa and storage ottoman in Kravet indigo chenille atop a matching carpet with dogfriendly flat pile. The multicolored, patterned accent pillows, combined with an orange throw, reference tones in Pearson’s art. Two mixed-media silkscreens, Yellow Marilyn and Red Marilyn by Jinx Penney, are showcased above the sectional. For these, the artist painted over black-and-white photos taken of Marilyn Monroe while she was a student at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York. Next to the pair is the whimsical, oil-on-wood Botero as Dietician by contemporary artist Judy Clifford. The reed and bamboo, 1970s coffee table is expandable and echoes the shape of the spiral, 1980s chairs that are evocative of Lou-

is Durot. A mid-century walnut and brass campaign chest from Gustavo Olivieri and a 1960s French table lamp in opaline glass and brass share the space. At the front door, an eclectic lamp made out of antique croquet balls greets guests. It sits atop a tripod table with oars, underscoring the coastal theme. A series of five colorful silkscreen prints on paper by Keith Haring, titled Pop Shop V, adorn the built-in area separating the living room from the kitchen. “They are nautical beach prints in orange, aqua, and brights, and I love
them,” says Pearson. The Haring prints complement custom orange, faux-ostrich leather swivel stools on white bases with nickel footrests from Lee Industries. The stools are a perfect fit at the kitchen island—which is topped with Caesarstone in White Blizzard—since “they don’t obstruct the flow,” says Bjørnen. Because Pearson’s Portuguese husband is a good cook, they enjoy hosting festive dinner parties that may start in the courtyard and eventually flow back inside. banquette with Sunbrella flax linen with blue trim and nickel nailheads. This versatile and functional seating surrounds the 1950s, oval, reverse-painted, glasstop table from Gustavo Olivieri Antiques. Above the banquette is a conversation piece: a bronze anemone mirror from Mecox Gardens. Pearson enjoys chilling in the art-filled dining space when he is unwinding at home alone. “This is one of my favorite places to sit in the corner and admire our home,” says Pearson. “I’m starved for brightness, and I love the light.” The white hallway leading to the bedroom sanctuary is illuminated by a citrine-and-orange metal pendant from Rejuvenation. Immediately, the eye is drawn along the wall toward more art: Vacuum Cleaner, a gouache by Greg Drasler; An American Portrait 1776-1976, an original lithograph poster by Dutch painter Karel Appel; and Jade Shell, another gouache, by Minh Nguyen. Seeking a way to infuse a little sexiness into the bedroom, Bjørnen selected Andy Warhol’s Flowers silkscreen on paper. The room is dominated by a Restoration Hardware Marseilles bed with white parchment leather and brass nailheads. More than just a place for the couple to sleep, the bedroom also 56

includes a special space in which to read and lounge. “John designed a chaise in an ivory bouclé chenille fabric for a vignette near the window that is perfect for an escape,” says Pearson. The small bathroom is highly stylized with more shiplap wood, a squared-off toilet, and a vessel sink from Duravit above a floating cabinet with a customized drawer for storage. The limestone shower, which features a window to admit natural light, was refitted for efficiency. Bjørnen maximized the bathroom by hanging a mirror that makes the space appear larger. A nautical nickel sconce and a mid-century porthole medicine cabinet further augment the coastal theme running through the condo, as does the etching The Boat by Steven Jennis. With bold pops of color punctuating the home’s fresh palette and mid-century furnishings updating the tropical ambience, Pearson’s winter haven is now bright and inspiring. In a one-level condominium with an intimate courtyard to share with friends, Pearson and his husband are able to live and entertain as they desire. “John did a great job with the interior design,” Pearson says. “The end result is adorable. We have our own little Melrose Place scenario.” «

Smart homes take on new meaning with integrated wellness intelligence systems that purify air and water, and tuck you in at night By Angela Caraway-Carlton When Doug Feirstein began planning for the construction of his new home along the scenic Tarpon River in Fort Lauderdale, coronavirus wasn’t even a blip on the radar. He and the builder envisioned an eye-popping, tropical-modern design and also considered environmental factors, such as making the property 90-percent solar-powered and landscaping with plants native to South Florida. While the initial efforts were focused on the exterior, Feirstein embraced a holistic approach to the interior when he hired Jan Vitrofsky, founder and CEO of HEDsouth in Hollywood, to trick out his nest with the latest entertainment technology. Vitrofsky—one of the leading pioneers in integrative home entertainment systems who’s known as the go-to guy for setting up A-listers’ homes and offices—has his eyes fixed on the future: wellness technology. “A smart home is not a smart home unless it’s healthy,” says Vitrofsky, who’s partnered with wellness real estate and technology company Delos to transform homes into wellness oases. “Humans spend 90 percent of their time inside. We can’t control what happens outside, but we can control what happens inside.” The technology guru acquires and installs Delos’ new Darwin home wellness intelligence system—a “brain” for the home that controls air and water filtration and lighting in real time, along with offering comforts such as screening meditation videos on Jan Vitrofsky, televisions. the body’s natural circadian rhythms that guide a person’s sleep-wake cycle, adjusting the room’s color to mimic the energizing, bright light of sunrise or dimming dusk hues to signal that it’s time to wind down. State-of-the-art filtration systems test the home’s water quality, filter out impurities, and balance the water. Homeowners can control Darwin from a touchscreen, smartphone, or tablet app as well as through Google Home integration and other home automation systems. Vitrofsky recommends the “full prescription” for lighting, water, and air, although homes can be retrofitted with select options. Systems start at $4,000 and rocket from there. For those working within a tight budget, he suggests starting with the master bedroom, where homeowners sleep for (hopefully) eight hours every night, surround-
ed by items prone to containing allergens, including pillows, mattresses, and linens. Feirstein found these features immensely intriguing and jumped at the opportunity to integrate them into his Fort Lauderdale home, which will be the first private residence custom-built with all of Darwin’s wellness bells and whistles. Unfortunately, the family of four’s house was still under construction in March during the beginning of the COVID-19 home quarantine. “I wish I was quarantined over there,” Feirstein said in late March. “But I don’t think this will be the last time we’ll be dealing with this [public health crisis]. Either way, you’re pretty much quarantined in your home three-quarters of the day anyway, so I think the home should be the healthiest environment possible.” FIRST INTEGRATED WELLNESS CONDOMINIUMS Vitrofsky believes integrated wellness systems will soon become a staple in the building industry, with wellness real estate already on the rise in South Florida. Villa Valencia, a new collection of ultra-luxe condominium residences in Coral Gables, will be the first in the nation to install the Darwin systems into each unit. (Its anticipated completion is summer 2021.) The design philosophy behind Villa Valencia is based on the three pillars of nature, technology, and wellness, so Delos’ system was a perfect fit given its array of community fitness and health amenities. “Our goal is to provide residents with an optimal daily environment through seamlessly integrating the best elements of the outdoors, inside,” says Rishi Kapoor, CEO of Location Ventures, the development firm behind Villa Valencia. “Using the Delos Darwin platform, we not only realize

No one needs a V-12-engined S 65 cabriolet. Nor does anyone need to spend a quarter-ofa-million dollars acquiring one. Not when the V-8-powered S 63 version is quicker, more exciting to drive, and stickers for under $200,000. But all that doesn’t matter. The S 65 is the flagship of the Mercedes-Benz lineup, the best of the best for those who will accept nothing less. The badge of honor here is the mighty, hand-built 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-12 shoehorned beneath that endless hood. Packing 621 horsepower and a nuclear reactor–like 738 pound-feet of torque, it has the energy to power a small town. Yet, unlike the S 63, it doesn’t shout about its performance, backed by formidable thrust that’s silent and seemingly never-ending. It makes a Bentley seem showy and juvenile. This is a wonderful convertible, with a top that descends in under 20 seconds and seating for four, so friends and family can soak up the sun. 3 CHEVROLET CORVETTE CONVERTIBLE
Be still my beating heart. Not only has Chevy unveiled its much-anticipated mid-engined C8 Corvette Stingray, but it quickly followed that up with a power-retractable hardtop convertible version. Production kicked off earlier this year, eliciting lines longer than those for Hamilton tickets. After all, here’s a 490-hp mid-engined supercar that costs just $7,500 more than the base coupe. That
means a McLaren 570S–challenging convertible for $67,495. Not only is this exotic supercar retailing for the price of a family sedan, but it also boasts a brilliant design. That folding top—crafted from lightweight composites—can raise or lower in 16 seconds and at speeds up to 30 mph. Top up or down, this bullet from Bowling Green looks like a million bucks.
Order one in red, and you’ll have friends and family thinking you’ve just bought yourself a Ferrari. Like the C8 coupe, power comes from a naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V-8 mated to an 8-speed dualclutch automatic. Count from one to three and that’s how long it’ll take to blast from zero to 60 mph, with a top speed of 190 mph. No doubt about it, this will be the hottest convertible of 2020.

A ride fit for 007
With Bond fever reaching the point of frenzy—the latest 007 romp, No Time to Die, opens in November—I have my fingers crossed that JB’s ride of choice will be this magnificent 2020 DBS Superleggera Volante. Quite a mouthful, I know. But the translation is simple; superleggera is Italian for “superlight,” as in weight, while volante is Aston speak for convertible. The car is nothing less than a monster. Based on the regular DB11 drophead, it’s powered by a thundering 715-hp twin-turbo 5.2-liter V-12 that can catapult this achingly gorgeous rocket ship from rest to 60 mph in a
mere 3.3 seconds and on to an outrageous 211 mph. Just as speedy is the levitating of the Superleggera’s cloth top, which clocks in at 14 seconds from start to finish. Aston says the eight-layer roof was subjected to the extremes of Death Valley and the Arctic Circle as part of its testing. That and more than 100,000 cycles in a one-month time span, which is said to equal 10 years of use. As for the price tag, you’ll need to find a nontrivial $332,000 for the privilege of being shaken and stirred in this mightiest of Aston convertibles.

The power of eight
All the superlatives in Webster’s don’t capture the overpowering glee of piloting the redesigned, reimagined Bentley Continental GTC convertible. AUDI R8 SPYDER PERFORMANCE There’s one supreme reason to buy an open-top R8 Spyder: the sound. One of my 2019 driving highlights was piloting BMW’s exquisite new V-8-engined 850i convertible. What’s not to appreciate about a super-luxury, four-seat drop-top with 532 hp and a roof that descends in just 15 seconds? While having power is good, saving more than $20,000 is equally attractive. I’m a huge fan of BMW’s
TwinPower 3.0-liter turbo six for its turbine-smooth power and strong, mid-range thrust. Even with a four-seater as hefty as the 8 series, this lusty 335-hp straightsix can rocket the convertible from standstill to 60 mph in 5 seconds—4.6 if you opt for the all-wheel-drive xDrive version. Top down, four windows raised, and the standard mesh rear-wind blocker in place, and there’s hardly a rustle in the cockpit. Pricing for the 840i convertible kicks off at $98,400, with the xDrive version adding an extra $2,000. That’s a lot of six appeal for the money.

The ultimate starter Ferrari
Bella macchina. Say it with true Italian passione, complete with a shrug of the shoulders and palms upturned. A “beautiful machine” indeed. This is Ferrari’s entry-level model, but with a sticker price of around $215,000, there’s nothing “entry-level” about this open-top prancing horse. Replacing the less-than-stylish California T, the 2+2 Portofino has sleeker lines, a more striking snout, and a less-pronounced rump. Top up or down, it looks stunning and every bit a true Ferrari. Talking of the top, the hard roof folds at the touch of a button, though the complex process involves the rear section of the car canting backward rather awkwardly.
LEXUS LC CONVERTIBLE Lovers of super-refined, high-luxe convertibles have been mourning the loss of the leatherlined Lexus SC 430 hardtop convertible since it ceased production back in 2010. But mourn no more. Lexus recently announced (to no one’s surprise) that it’s producing a convertible version of the super-sexy LC 500 coupe, with a few key design edits that further highlight its sumptuous

Yes, of course it’s fast—blisteringly so. As in zero-to-60-in-3.5-seconds fast. As in 199-mphtop-speed fast. This straight-line performance is matched by precise yet surprisingly undemanding handling. Entry-level it may be, but this is arguably the perfect all-around Ferrari.
Finally, a new Lexus drop-top
silhouette. Expect this drop-top to hit showrooms this summer, with a price tag starting at just over $100,000. Like the coupe, engine choices will include the throaty 5.0-liter V-8 cranking out 471 hp, along with the 3.5-liter V-6 electric hybrid that’s good for a combined 354 hp. As for the LC’s top, Lexus is breaking the tradition set by the SC and replac-
ing the metal folding hardtop with a cloth roof to reduce weight and keep performance lively. Pity. Everyone I know with an SC adores the hardtop for its added security, excellent rearward visibility, and cleaner lines. But either way, there’s much to love about the LC 500 coupe, and offering a convertible version only adds to the attraction. *Directions for Infused Tequila: Pour out a bottle of tequila in a container with a sliced pepper (such as poblano or jalapeño) and let sit for 48 hours. Then, fine strain the finished product back into the tequila bottle. Remember, the more pepper/seeds you add, the spicier your tequila will be. Shake ingredients together and strain over ice. Add preferred garnish and enjoy.

José Andrés is no stranger to giving back. The celebrity chef and humanitarian— who was slated to appear in May as part of the Broward College Speaker Series, an engagement that has since been postponed due to the coronavirus—understands the powerful impact of food. In addition to feeding the few at his award-winning restaurants, he works to feed many through World Central Kitchen, a nonprofit he founded to provide meals to those impacted by natural disasters and other crises. In 2017, after Hurricane Maria devasted Puerto Rico, Andrés helped to organize the delivery of more than 3.5 million meals, an effort that earned him a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. Amid the recent COVID-19 pandemic, he mobilized his charity to feed those who were held up on the Diamond Princess cruise ship and also transformed his restaurants in Washington, D.C., into community kitchens offering to-go meals for those in need. Time magazine recognized his actions with a cover story in early April. During his talk—the date of which is still to be determined—Andrés will share stories and images from his travels, documenting work promoting clean cookstove technology; improving kitchens in urban and rural schools; and launching culinary projects to create jobs and increase opportunities for families in Haiti and beyond.
