n December 1st, 2020, the Maris Raffa Experience returned to Miami with its fall edition. The exclusive event, which took place at the trendy Joia Beach, was the first of 3 that will happen over the next year. Commanded by interior designer Maris Raffa, the Maris Raffa Experience – Fall Edition aimed to equip professionals and entrepreneurs with the necessary tools to grow in the current market. “The purpose of this event is to share content that can be applied in any type of business”, explained Maris. Renowned entrepreneurs, influencers, local media and major sponsor brands attended the evening.

“We now have a world that is totally ambiguous and complex. What was predictable is no longer the case. The market is changing very fast,” said Barbosa. The big news of the evening was the announcement that the Maris Raffa Art Basel Experience will return in November 2021 at the beautiful New World Symphony venue. Special thanks to the sponsors: Artefacto, StudioKaza, Intellyhouse, Decortiles, Ornare, Design Shades, Oliver, Dcortez, Cleannew, Invision, Cyro Raffa, Trousseau, and Idelli. The event was powered by AMG Advertising Agency. **All CDC rules regarding COVID 19 were enforced during the event.

Guest speaker, Christian Barbosa, spoke a little about his specialties in personal and corporate productivity.

Local LOVE

CAPEHART

February is the month of love and such a great time to celebrate everything that makes our community special, from the natural beauty and leisure opportunities to the incredible dining and night scene. But what drives community most is the passion and energy of the people who call it home. It gives me great pleasure this month to introduce you to one of our local power couples, Donatella Arpaia Stewart and Allan Stewart. Though they’re powerhouses in their own right—she’s a chef and Food Network personality, he’s a renowned heart surgeon and head of cardiothoracic and vascular surgery for HCA Healthcare East Florida—they’re a force together, and it shows in their effervescence. Donatella and Allan have invited us into their Pinecrest home for a delicious—and, of course, heart-healthy—dinner featuring some of her star recipes, such as spicy meatball lollipops. See the beautiful spread, and get to know this dynamic duo, in “Party Hearty,” on page 46. Passion can extend to many pursuits, including wine. If you’re always looking for the next great vintage, let our wine and spirits editor guide you. In “Perfect 10,” Mark Spivak highlights his most memorable vintages and knowledge amassed during a lifetime of wine education and tastings. Bottles like a 1985 Sassicaia Super Tuscan and 1990 Dom Pérignon Oenothèque rosé truly leave an imprint on the palate—and deserve the attention of the most discriminating enthusiasts. Learn more starting on page 70. And for those who appreciate an exhilarating ride, good news: Electric cars are more powerful and gorgeous than ever. Check out “Plug & Play” on page 54 for automotive editor Howard Walker’s top 10 zero-emission vehicles, including a new Lucid Air that will make your head spin. Yes, Virginia, there is four-digit horsepower. Enjoy the issue!

PUBLIC ART

REIMAGINED Spaces

Experience the Miami Design District (MDD) like never before as part of the sixth annual Miami Design District Commission. Each winter, MDD commissions a creative studio to reimagine the ultra-chic neighborhood’s environment through public installations that interact with the native trees, architecture, and outdoor sculptures. This year, the Chilean design collective Great Things to People (gt2P) was selected to deliver immersive works that focus on the theme of energy. Entitled “Conscious Actions,” gt2P’s work combines industrial production and traditional craftsmanship in two fun and interactive playground-like installations. Named Umbrella Birds and Swing Gravity Shadows, these devices activate through natural forces that generate effects like transformative surfaces, kinetic motion, and solar-

powered lighting. The experiences tap into childhood fun to inspire reflection on the energy we consume and contribute back to the world while also raising awareness for a more resilient, healthy, and equitable city. (miamidesigndistrict.net) —Juliana Accioly

LIVING GREEN

CREATE RESORT-INSPIRED SPACES AT HOME WITH FERNANDO WONG

l Play with texture. Use various colors, shapes, and textures to create a dynamic landscape that feels elegant and luxurious, like your own private resort. Be mindful of sunlight. Some plants enjoy full sun more than others, so make sure you choose ones that can handle the Florida heat. Consider seasonality. Choosing plantings that bloom in different seasons will make sure your space stays green and vibrant all year long. Embrace the beach. For beachfront properties, be sure to select plants that can withstand salt air and ocean winds.

Fernando Wong is making urban green living a reality. The renowned Miami landscape architect’s local portfolio includes Soho Beach House, the Institute of Contemporary Art Museum’s sculpture garden, and the Residences at Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club in Miami. He’s also helping buyers of the upcoming Four Seasons Fort Lauderdale property transform their rooftop decks, terraces, and balconies into stylish green lounges. With a bit of imagination, you can convert a corner of your home into a place of relaxation and connect with nature. Wong shares a few tips on how to execute a resort-inspired retreat. SPOTLIGHT

SOUND CHECK

Jamie Rodriguez hosts a rock podcast STRAIGHT FROM HIS MIAMI HOME

If you equally enjoy rock and roll and podcasts, JRod Concerts: The Podcast might just become your newest audio obsession. Former Miami Y-100 radio personality Jamie Rodriguez hosts the pod at home in Turnberry Village. Episodes feature musical talents and legends who share stories, perform audio plays, bring all sorts of conversations to the line—or a mishmash of all of the above. The photojournalist’s biweekly pod is available on major platforms, including Apple Music, Spotify, and SoundCloud. Here, he gives us the lowdown on hosting a podcast in times of a pandemic. (jrodconcertspodcast.com) —J.A. 24

What’s it like hosting a podcast at home? It’s been quite a learning journey! I’ve produced and contributed to musical pods before, but to run my own, I had to make myself into an editor, producer, lighting director, and wear all hats. How has the podcast evolved since March? The video element has become more popular, and the musical performances have become a mainstay. Sometimes artists even give us world premieres of their next singles, like Smith & Thell did with their hit song, “Year of the Young.” How do you go about selecting guests? The common element is quality and intangibles. Whether it’s songwriting, producing, acting, or thought-provoking comedy, the question is: ‘What are you adding to the conversation?’ With so many talents stuck at home, 2020 has been great for songwriting because it has helped push creativity to incredible heights. Tell us about some of your favorite pod memories to date. Legendary folk singer Judy Collins shared with us a never-heard-before story of getting drunk with Janis Joplin in the late ’60s in West Hollywood, and Joplin whispering in her ear, ‘One of us is going to make it alive, and it ain’t gonna be me.’ Mary Wilson, the longest-lasting member of the Supremes, told us she still feels a rush of excitement when her songs play while she’s at a grocery store or the local Starbucks. And Andrew Farriss, a founding member of the ’80s iconic rock band INXS, related the story of how he met Michael Hutchence during a school fight in Australia.

RATS

Keeping up with its mission to support emerging talents, the Institute of Contemporary Art Miami will host American painter Janiva Ellis’ first solo museum exhibition beginning February 11. Titled Rats, her collection of 15 large-scale works trace recent and significant experimentation in the artist’s practice, combining abstraction, figuration, landscape, and cartoon to explore the African American female experience. “There are definitely subjects such as women figures that are in a state of transformation or even erasure in Ellis’ paintings,” says Alex Gartenfeld, ICA’s artistic director. (icamiami.org) —J.A.

THE WORLD OF ANNA SUI

l

Beginning February 28, the glamorous and eclectic work of one of New York’s most accomplished designers arrives at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale. The World of Anna Sui invites viewers to discover Sui’s creative process and the diverse influences that contributed to her career. “South Florida is an international fashion and design hub,” notes Bonnie Clearwater, the museum’s director and chief curator. “It’s important to provide designers with access to the history of fashion and to unique designers, such as Anna Sui, whose fashions embody a form of storytelling, which is based on her own experiences growing up in the suburbs of Detroit. It also explores her multimedia collaborations with musicians, photographers, and models.” (nsuart museum.org) —Melissa Puppo

Meet Miami’s savvy businesswoman and lifestyle aficionada, SIRA PEVIDA Lifestyle blogger Sira Pevida was a practicing nutritionist before transitioning to the full-time digital influencer she is today. Now the CEO and cofounder of the blog The Walk, which highlights fashion, travel, and lifestyle, she’s become internationally recognized for her sophisticated, editorial content curated on her social media and website. “I started sharing my styling tips and outfit posts on Instagram, and in time the posts started gaining traction and a following, which enabled me to continue my hobby and transform it into a career,” says the Mexican native who now lives in Miami with her three children. Her focus is primarily fashion and beauty, but with staying at home being the new norm, Pevida has rediscovered her love for fitness, health, and well-being. “It is exciting being able to share topics and content surrounding areas I truly am passionate about, and that people enjoy seeing the content also,” she says. Her content is available on popular social media platforms, like Instagram (@sirapevida) and TikTok. “With TikTok, I love that I am able to create fun and interactive short videos that are unique and captivate a whole different audience,” she says. —Melissa Puppo

CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT: All of my bags. I must confess I am addicted to accessories and cannot go a day without using one.

GO-TO LOOK: This season I love mixing boots with unique items, such as wearing combat boots with sweatpants. I know it’s not a very common combination, but once you style them with the right accessories, you can create an elevated yet casual look. Especially with staying home currently, it’s nice to still dress up yet feel comfortable, confident, and put-together.

BEAUTY HACK: Don’t be afraid to experiment with different makeup styles, colors, and products, as it’s the best way to work out what suits you best and what you feel most comfortable in. SKIN SECRETS: Every day I finish my skin-care routine with an SPF. Another important thing I try to maintain is staying hydrated by drinking enough water throughout the day. FOOD KRYPTONITE: French fries! I absolutely adore them. FAVE MIAMI DINE: I love going to Novikov. It’s in downtown Miami 26

and has a Chinese/Japanese concept. My go-to order is the Peking duck. OUT-OF-TOWNER MUST: Here in Miami, I love to take them to the beach. The view is gorgeous, and it’s the perfect spot to hang out with visiting family or friends.

UPCOMING TRENDS: I saw so many new trends that I loved during the last fashion month for spring that it’s hard to choose only one I love and want to emulate. Some that were a highlight for me are nudes, earthy tones, and transparencies. I feel like these are styles that won’t only be an upcoming trend but also investment pieces.

THE DEFINITIVE GUIDE TO BUCKET-LIST TRAVEL, QUICK GETAWAYS, AND THE ART OF TRANSPORTATION WANDERLUST

Unexpected ALABAMA

With a pristine state park and trailblazing, eco-luxe accommodations, Gulf Shores, Alabama, surprises as an environmentalist’s wonderland

GULF SHORES AND ORANGE BEACH TOURISM

By Paul Rubio

hough Alabama lays claim to just a sliver of Gulf shoreline—32 miles to be exact—its coast makes a big impression thanks to one of the South’s greatest natural assets: Gulf State Park. Measuring a small-but-mighty 6,150 acres (roughly the size of St. Barts), Gulf State Park stands out among other U.S. parklands for its nine well-preserved ecosystems, from pine savannas to coastal swales to maritime forests. Three hundred and twentyfive migratory bird species travel here annually, joining the armadillos, bobcats, alligators, bald eagles, and endangered beach mice that reside year-round. For decades scientists had lauded Gulf Shores’ natural riches— famed biologist and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Edward O. Wilson even dubbed this region part of “America’s Amazon.” However, it wasn’t until recently that Gulf Shores began to appear on the luxury traveler’s radar. In 2019 Eagle Cottages at Gulf State Park (eaglecottagesatgsp.com) was welcomed as a National Geographic Unique Lodge of the World, one of only 63 on Earth. In 2018 The Lodge at Gulf State Park (lodgeatgulfstatepark.com) reopened as a global model of sustainable design, 14 years after

the original lodge was destroyed in Hurricane Ivan and more than eight years after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill devastated the Gulf coastline. Together, these two properties have propelled Alabama into the spotlight as a compelling eco-luxe destination. Located along Lake Shelby, roughly a mile inland from the coast, the 11 Eagle Cottages at Gulf State Park are historic landmarks dating to the late 1930s. Built in the collective fashion of a traditional Alabama “fish camp” by the Civilian Conservation Corps as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal, the cottages have since been reimagined to fit today’s construction standards and retrofitted with modern amenities. The beauty in staying in one of these threebedroom, three-bathroom cottages lies in immediate access to nature and the 28 miles of backcountry trails that weave throughout the park and its ecosystems (complimentary bicycles wait at your doorstep). Even better are the bundled-in tours with master naturalists who provide in-depth lessons on the area’s vegetation and wildlife for audiences of all levels, from inquisitive children to scientific peers. Born from $140 million allotted to Gulf State Park by the Deepwater Horizon recovery fund, The Lodge at Gulf State Park, a Hilton hotel, was conceptualized as an archetype of eco-conscious coastal

development, pioneering in both design and practice. While the Gulf of Mexico healed from the largest marine oil spill in history, the 350-room, beachfront hotel took shape, replacing a bunker-style lodge from the 1970s and reducing its footprint by a third. Drafted with energy and water-efficiency in mind, the property capitalized on natural ventilation and lighting while showcasing the latest in pro-environment systems. For example, the swimming pool is fed by condensation from the HVAC system; in summer, an average of 8,400 gallons of water per day are channeled from guest rooms to the pool. Surrounding natural habitat was restored through replanting native species, reclaiming coastal dunes (and rebuilding them by placing discarded Christmas trees underneath the sand), and re

Finally, don’t leave Alabama without tasting the talents of three-time James Beard-nominated chef Bill Briand. Local seafood and meats are prepared with Caribbean and Latin American flair at Playa (playaoba.com), the highlights of which are the coconut shrimp (flambéed with rum, chili flakes, cilantro, grilled lime, and topped with spicy mayo), the Playa burger (stacked with grilled pineapple, fried onions, cheddar cheese, Playa barbecue and Alabama white barbecue sauce on a brioche bun), and the vodka-forward, frozen Pink Pineapple cocktail (served in a glass pineapple, of course). Nearby is Briand’s fine-dining restaurant, Fisher’s at Orange Beach Marina (fishersobm.com/ upstairs) where dishes skew more elaborate and the design tells a familiar narrative of reuse and recycle—the floors, for example, are made from reclaimed heart pine from Louisiana’s circa-1892 Godchaux Sugar Mill mule barn. Similar to the unexpected, environmentally progressive lodging in Gulf Shores, the food scene surprises and delights, all the while linking to coastal Alabama’s sustainability program.

THE ORIGINAL OYSTER HOUSE

GULF SHORES AND ORANGE BEACH TOURISM

Southern states pride themselves on great food, and coastal Alabama is no exception. Prepare to feast on some of the country’s freshest seafood, often at restaurants that are part of the pro-environment movement. Begin at DeSoto’s Seafood Kitchen (desotossea foodkitchen.com), a no-frills locals’ haunt, famous for its Old Bay–seasoned, peel-and-eat Royal Red shrimp and pecan-crusted catch of the day topped with béarnaise sauce. Start every meal with a basket of piping hot yeast rolls (wheat, brown, or white) accompanied by whipped honey butter. Be sure to request a side of the decadent sweet potato casserole, which doubles as dessert. For endless summer vibes, lunch or imbibe at The Gulf (thegulf.com), a sprawling, fast-casual beach club where patrons order from a pick-up window and then chillax on picnic benches, eclectic dining tables, and beach cushions overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. The kitchen, bar, and gift shop are housed in an amalgam of colorful, recycled shipping containers from which the most delicious and eye-catching cocktails on the coast are served. (Get the rainbow-colored, rum-forward Surfs Up for pics, the Seasonal Berry Mojito for taste.) Savor the best in Gulf bivalves at the Original Oyster House (originaloysterhouse.com), a 37-yearold restaurant where the meaty delicacies are served on the half-shell, Parmesan-baked with garlic butter, or in the preferred style of the original owners: baked with garlic cocktail sauce, small-batch bacon, and grated Parmesan. The Original Oyster House piloted Alabama’s first oyster shell recycling program to conserve habitat and improve water quality, and other restaurants have followed suit, resulting in 14 million shells collected and integrated into 36 acres of a man-made/natural reef hybrid.

creating a wetland on-site to collect stormwater. Once open, the property made good on its light-on-Earth promise by addressing even the smallest details, such as sorting trash into livestock feed, compost, and recycling; offering straws made from wheat shaft; and utilizing seafood sourced via local fishermen and ocean-friendly initiatives. The Lodge at Gulf State Park offers 350 guest rooms (including 20 suites) as well as numerous nooks in which to sit back and enjoy the natural scenery.

GULF SHORES AND ORANGE BEACH TOURISM

Park awaits at your doorstep for education- or adrenaline-packed days of birdwatching, biking, fishing, and hiking. Miles of raised boardwalks hover over the land and even zigzag up and down to connect park grounds over highways, dunes, and towering sand live oaks—oftentimes, exploration here excites like a game of Chutes and Ladders. In between bald eagle spotting and ecosystem identification, pay a visit to the park’s Interpretive Center, which produces its own electricity and is close to completing the Living Building Challenge, the world’s most rigorous environmental building certification. Also, take time to appreciate the principal reason most come to Alabama’s coast: the vast expanses of sugar-white sands, idyllic for ambles, sunbathing, and low-key fun. Unlike the majority of the Gulf coastline, which is stacked with monoliths from Florida all the way to Texas, the miles-long beachfront of Gulf State Park houses zero buildings beyond The Lodge and remains an unspoiled stretch of natural splendor. Indeed, this small, protected confluence of undeveloped coastline and “America’s Amazon” is a unique national treasure, one that is now welcoming the eco-minded traveler at not one but two headlining properties. Screen TEST

Cadillac’s redesigned 2021 Escalade comes with a dashboard screen that could double as your home TV By Howard Walker Remember those heady days when you thought a 36-inch television was the pinnacle of big-screen viewing pleasure? You know, the one that made those Mork & Mindy reruns look so enticing. Climb up—way up—behind the wheel of Cadillac’s latest 2021 Escalade and feast your peepers on its industry-first, 38-inch, curved OLED dashboard screen. This is more than 3 feet of wafer-thin, high-definition glass with twice the pixel density of a 4K TV. It’s so wide, so pinpoint precise, so crystal clear, it’s like driving from the front row of a cineplex. As you’d expect, it has the easy pinch, swipe, and tap operation of an iPhone, plus maps so defined you can almost see house numbers on a mailbox. The night vision display is so crisp you can check whether that pedestrian stepping off the sidewalk is wearing an N95 COVID mask or one of those cheap disposables. 42

With such an advanced Escalade, it certainly feels as if Cadillac engineers perused a Sharper Image catalog and said, “Okay, we’ll take the lot.” My favorite piece of tech? That would be the mind-blowing AKG Studio Reference 3D surround-sound system. This thing comes with 36 speakers, a trio of amps, 28 channels, and 360-degree projection. Having The Dixie Chicks—sorry, they’re just The Chicks these days—performing in the back seat wouldn’t sound this good. At long last, this new-from-the-wheels-up Escalade reads as a departure from the SUV’s glorified GMC Yukon/Chevy Tahoe roots. The astonishing quality, fit, finish, and luxe attire now put it head-to-head with the likes of Mercedes’ GLS, BMW’s X7, and Range Rover. As it should for a truck with a base sticker of $77,490 or, in the case of our blacked-out, fully loaded, Sport Platinum 4WD tester, a nontrivial $112,095.

Naturally, for 2021 the three-row Escalade got supersized. As if it wasn’t PRICE: FROM $77,490; already big enough, it’s now 7 inches $112,095 AS TESTED ENGINE: 6.2-LITER V-8 POWER: 420 longer, a couple inches taller, and half HP TORQUE: 460 LB-FT an inch wider. This means 40 percent more MPH LENGTH/WIDTH: 212/81 third-row legroom (it’s up by 10 inches) INCHES WEIGHT: 5,822 and a whopping 68 percent more cargo POUNDS WHY WE LOVE IT: space. BECAUSE WHO DOESN’T Fundamental to this is the S’lade’s WANT AN SUV WITH SUCH more compact independent rear-susBAR-RAISING TECHNOLOGY pension, with pillowy air springing and AND SOPHISTICATION? automatic load-leveling. The air suspension lets you lower the truck by 2 inches, though trust me, you’re going to want the $1,750 power-retractable running boards. Either that or carry a stepladder. See this new Escalade in the metal and yes, the design is more evolutionary than revolutionary. But the massive grille, mail-slot headlights, honking 22-inch wheels, and vertical slivers of LEDs front and rear will leave no doubt that this is a different version. As before, there’s a cool Sport package—in the past, 45 percent of Escalades have been Sport models—that blacks out all of the shiny chrome on the grille, tailgate, and trim for a more stealthy, bad-boy look. You’d be forgiven for thinking that using “Sport” and “Escalade” in the same sentence is wishful thinking. After all, here’s a honker that’s 17 feet 8 inches long, 6 feet 9 inches wide, and breaks the scales at close to 6,000 pounds. But you’d be surprised. With GM’s remarkable Magnetic Ride Control dampers at each corner coupled with adaptive air suspension, the Escalade no longer rolls around like a freighter in a Force 5. Throw in huge brakes, nicely weighted steering, and Velcro-on-velvet grip, and this new Escalade is a delight to drive. You just have to get used to those supertanker dimensions. Power—and plenty of it—comes from GM’s tried-and-tested 6.2-liter V-8 cranking out 420 horsepower. Coupled to a quick-shifting 10-speed automatic and all-wheel drive, it scoots off the line with gusto and cruises serenely. Caddy’s XXL-sized Escalade has come a long way since it debuted back in 1999 as a rebadged GMC Yukon. This latest version is finally the luxury flagship the storied brand deserves. «

If Looks Could THRILL The new, built-in-Wisconsin Marquis M42 express cruiser is a guaranteed head-turner By Howard Walker

It looks Italian. Sleek, racy, a true bella macchina. A boat on which to sip chilled Prosecco as you ease into Portofino or drop the hook outside Positano. Or maybe it’s French. Perhaps from the drawing board of Guy Couach or Prestige, the boat’s polarizing styling is meant to spin the heads of le jet set as you breeze into Saint-Tropez’s old port. Alas, you’d be wrong on both counts. This stunning Marquis M42 hails from Wisconsin, land of cheese, beer, and brats. Pulaski, Wisconsin, to be precise, which is world famous for its Pulaski Polka Days music festival. I kid you not. But a boat this dramatic has to have a European connection. And it does. Those dazzling exterior lines are the work of Venetian design duo Carlo Nuvolari and Dan Lenard. They gave the M42 that love it or loathe it reverse-angle bow, as well as its large hull windows and raised sections along each side that almost look glued on. Marquis debuted the M42 at the 2019 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Unfortunately, its unveiling was overshadowed by the unwrapping of the Lexus LY 650, a $3.7 million 65-footer that Marquis developed in collaboration with the Japanese luxury automaker. And yes, Nuvolari Lenard designed that, too. The original M42 came with a pair of muscley 480-hp 6.7-liter Cummins turbo diesels with V-drives, delivering a top speed of around 35 knots. While interest was strong, buttressed by a competitive $664,000 base price, customer feedback suggested that switching inboards for outboards would heighten the appeal, especially here in skin-

The result is impressive. With a combined 1,200 hp, the M42 Outboard can hit a top speed of more than 50 knots. “It’s a real blast to drive,” says Josh Delforge, Marquis’ VP of design and engineering. “It turns on a dime, is a rocket ship at wide-open throttle, and the ride is extremely comfortable and stable.” Then there’s the added bonus of space. When you switch from inboard to outboard, you’re left with a big, empty engine compartment. Now, at the touch of a button, a huge hatch beneath the sun pad rises to reveal a storage area roomy enough to swallow fold-up bikes, a rollup inflatable tender, or misbehaving children. What hasn’t changed is the M42’s brilliance as a fun-loving express cruiser. In that oversized cockpit there’s room for a dozen or so friends to lounge around on a U-shaped sofa or that 9-foot-wide sun pad. The only negative is that with outboards on the transom, there’s no optional, hydraulically lowering swim platform. For captain and first mate, there’s a double-wide helm seat and a carbon-fiber-clad instrument panel that looks like something out of a Lamborghini. Dual 16-inch Raymarines are the touch screens of choice. When it comes to entertaining, there’s either a cockpit galley with sink, fridge, and grill or a smaller version down below. The M42 also makes a perfect weekender, with its forward dinette that converts into a V berth or queen, a head with a separate shower, and 6 feet 5 inches of headroom throughout. Prices for the M42 Outboard start at $611,500, though on top of that you’ll need to add the must-have cantilevered hardtop for shade and a 7.5kW Onan genset to run the AC. You have our permission, however, to skip the brats. «

elebrity chef Donatella Arpaia Stewart knows food can be both good and good for you. Raised on a Mediterranean-inspired diet, she spent her childhood summers at her mother’s family olive groves in Puglia, Italy. Still, Donatella wasn’t into fitness when she met heart surgeon Allan Stewart in 2010 at the New York City Marathon: He was a marathon participant; she was a celebrity wearing a beautiful dress and Louboutin shoes. They hit it off anyway. Donatella says she was amazed by Allan’s commitment to good health in all aspects of his life. “Allan would work out for an hour after performing five heart surgeries in one day,” says Donatella, a lawyerturned-culinary-icon and longtime Food Network head judge of Iron Chef America and The Next Iron Chef, as well as a restaurateur, author,

and lifestyle brand ambassador. (They were married in 2011 at the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan.) Allan knew cardiothoracic surgery was his calling since watching the first pediatric heart transplant on a Nova TV special as an 11-yearold. In 2004, he was tapped to be part of the New York–based surgical team who operated on President Bill Clinton’s heart. Today he’s known as a leading expert on minimally invasive heart surgery in the U.S., and works as the Medical Director and Chief of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery for HCA Healthcare East Florida, which includes Aventura Hospital and Medical Center, Kendall Regional Medical Center, and Mercy Hospital in Miami-Dade. Donatella was 27 when she started her culinary career. Born and bred in her family’s restaurant business, she realized after earning her law degree that food—not law—was her calling. “The restaurant business chose me,” says the chef, whose family members taught her to love seasonality and high-quality ingredients.

I KNOW HOW TO MAKE PEOPLE FEEL WELCOME; I LOVE TO HOST AS WELL AS COOK.” —DONATELLA ARPAIA STEWART

In 1998, she opened Bellini in New York City followed by David Burke & Donatella, Anthos, Mia Dona, Kefi, and Eos—all receiving a variety of awards. (Zagat dubbed her the “hostess with the mostess” because of her front-of-the-house hospitality skills.) “I know how to make people feel welcome; I love to host as well as cook,” says Donatella, also classically trained at Le Grand Diploma for Classic Culinary Arts at the French Culinary Institute and the Italian Culinary Academy. She now owns two Manhattan locations of Prova Pizzabar—one in Grand Central Station and another in Moxy Times Square—which serve Neapolitan style pizza inspired by her studies with Italian pizza master Enzo Cocci. Though the couple loved living in New York, by 2018 it was time for a change. “We liked Miami’s warmer weather,” says Donatella, who contributes to ABC’s Good Morning America, NBC’s Today show, and sells lifestyle culinary lines on the Home Shopping Network. “I wanted him to be a star in a new environment as long as the city was known for food. So, Miami sounded great.” Plus, Donatella dishes, she plans to open

more Prova Pizzabar locations in South Florida. The family, which includes their three children, Alessandro, 9, and twins Emma and Noah, 2, love their healthy Miami life and enjoy a tasty diet of leafy greens, fresh fish, olive oil, nuts, occasional high-protein pasta, and pure chocolate. “We eat no processed foods, keep things fresh, and avoid most anything white,” Donatella says. “I cook all of the time, and occasionally Allan and I cheat on the good stuff, including red wine.” Allan, who admits that he used to “eat for sustenance only” calls their diet “delicious” and heart-healthy, to boot. “Even though I am an independent woman, I love cooking for him and the family,” Donatella says. “I like us all to eat together. We are both from first-generation immigrant families and appreciate family.” Donatella and Allan also appreciate entertaining guests regularly in their Pinecrest home. Before parties, she prepares the menu and cooks, while he mixes signature cocktails and cues up the music. “I like to perfect my background music choices at the last minute,” he says. “I mix it up and add Latin flair to get people dancing.” FEBRUARY 2021

For their recent heart-healthy soiree, the couple invited friends over for a movable feast created by Donatella with help from Palm Beach Catering & Luxury Events. “I love to move the party around the house,” she says. As guests arrived, they gathered around the marbletopped bar (with a huge private wine cellar behind) filled with glowing candles for Allan’s three signature cocktails: Vesper martini from the 2006 James Bond film, Casino Royale (vodka, gin, and wine with an orange peel), smoked old fashioned (bourbon with Italian Amarena cherries and a dash of bitters), and a Prosecco cocktail. “Allan and I were kindred spirits during our days at Columbia University Medical Center,” says Varinder Pal Singh, chairman of cardiology at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, who flew down for the festivities. “We’re hard working, genuine people who also know how important it is to have fun.” While listening to live music by instrumentalist Pamir Guanchez, guests enjoyed passed appetizers like tuna tartare with sesame oil, soy sauce, Calabrian chili, toasted sesame, and microgreens; Faroe Islands salmon mini tacos with lemon and lime zest, ginger, olive oil, and

microgreens; spicy meatball lollipops (Donatella’s awardwinning recipe); coconut ceviche with coconut milk, lime zest, red onion, jalapeño, and toasted coconut shavings, served with margaritas in mini Patrón bottles; and assorted Galbani cheeses displayed on a charcuterie board. “They are great hosts, and aside from being smart, Dr. Stewart is a patient and kind person,” says Debbie Segreti, his 15-year administrative assistant, who moved to Miami to continue her career in his practice. “When I met Donatella in New York, I told Allan that this is the girl he was going to marry.” For dinner, the guests made their way to the back patio

Designed in an Italian, rustic-glam style with center floral arrangements of blush and white calla lilies and freesias, blush lisianthus, ranunculus, protea blushing bride, olive branches, and eucalyptus, Donatella interspersed candles throughout the tablescapes for a low-key ambience. “I don’t like centerpieces, but I do like to mix and match naturals, wood, and metals like gold, silver, and pewter,” says Donatella. “Then I add modern touches like my black and gold cutlery with my own gold and white china design for Frontgate, and my Fornasetti face plates from the old days in New York.” The heart-healthy meal included burrata salad with crispy

THE PONY EXPRESS FORD MUSTANG MACH-E An electric Mustang SUV? You heard right. Ford’s all-new, all-electric crossover is a Mustang with a plug, able to gallop for up to 300 miles on a single charge. Targeted at Tesla’s Model Y, the five-seat, super-roomy Mach-E is offered with rear- and four-wheel drive, along with standard (75 kWh) or extended-range (99 kWh) batteries. First deliveries start at the end of the year. While prices kick off at $43,895 for the base Select model, it’s the $61,600 GT you’ll want. With its twin electric motors delivering 459 hp and 612 lb-ft of torque, the electric pony’s performance will be up there with the most potent Mustang V-8s. We’re talking zero-to-60 mph sprinting in 3.5 seconds. While it’s a sport-ute instead of a sports car, there are plenty of cool Mustang design cues here. We love the mile-long, curvy hood, those cat-eye headlights, and that Mustang-influenced rear-end. This is one Mustang that Sally will definitely want to ride.

2 BLADE RUNNER TESLA CYBERTRUCK Love it, loathe it, wouldn’t be caught dead in it? Whatever you think of the polarizing lines of Tesla’s Blade Runner–style Cybertruck electric pick-up, remember that so far more than 750,000 fans have pre-ordered one. Okay, the deposit might only be $100, but plenty of people love Tesla’s wild child, expected to be in production by late next year. That’s if Elon Musk can find somewhere to build it. Austin, Texas, is the current front-runner.

This beast will have armored glass and a stainless-steel exoskeleton chassis. Three versions will be on offer: a single-motor rear-drive version with a 250-mile range, a dual-motor all-wheel drive model capable of 300 miles, and a tri-motor car with insane acceleration and juice for 500 miles. What we love the most are the fun accessories already being talked about—from a camper version, to one with solar panels in the roof, to an all-electric ATV quad bike that fits in the back.

THE DISRUPTER RIVIAN R1S What's not to love about an all-electric, Range Rover-like SUV with a range of up to 400 miles, zero-to-60 acceleration in 3 seconds, and quad motors for ultimate off-roading? This is (or, at least, will be) the Rivian R1S SUV when it goes into production, along with its R1T pick-up sibling, early next year. With more than $5 billion in backing from the likes of Amazon, Ford, and Cox Automotive, Michigan-based Rivian is emerging as a major

3

player in the fast-growing electric vehicle market. And the R1S sport-ute is sure to give Tesla’s falcon-doored, minivan-like Model X its first serious challenge, providing luxury SUV owners with an alluring reason to switch to electric. Top versions of the R1S will come with 754 hp, zero-to-60-mph capability in under 3 seconds, air suspension giving ground clearance from 8 to 15.5 inches, and a truly luxe, leather-and-wood interior with three rows and seating for seven.

4 HOT CONCEPT MERCEDES-BENZ EQS The ‘S’ in EQS says it all. When it goes on sale in early 2022, this will be Mercedes’ flagship, super-luxury, S-Class-sized electric sedan. Unveiled last year as a concept model, the Vision EQS hints at the jaw-dropping styling of this groundbreaking, four-door, swoopy-roofed model. With a brand new “skateboard” battery pack mounted low between the axles, the EQS should offer true limo-like interior space. And to add to the car’s practicality, it will have a liftback tailgate, plus a front trunk—frunk, maybe?—where the engine would normally live.

054_ELECTRICCARS_0221.indd 56

EQ is Mercedes’ all-electric sub-brand, with plans to launch a total of 10 EQ-branded electric vehicles by 2025. There’s talk of an EQS 550 4Matic having a 470-hp/100-kWh battery pack that offers 430 miles of range. Performance fans will love the rumored AMG version packing more than 600 hp. Don’t expect the production version of the EQS to have the concept’s stunning, superyacht-inspired cabin with a roof-liner developed from recycled ocean plastic. But it’s nice to dream about the entire surface of an interior being capable of displaying digital content.

KIDNEY PUNCH BMW I4 BMW certainly seems to have been dragging its feet in its quest to become an electric player. Since its pioneering efforts with the quirky i3 minicar and gorgeous i8 sports hybrid, there’s been nothing much in the way of a serious follow-up. That should change with the arrival later next year of the bold i4 four-door and five-door i4 Gran Coupe to challenge Tesla’s seemingly invincible Model 3. Shown recently as the i4 Concept, the production i4 is expected to share the polarizing, bucktoothed, swollenkidney front end that just debuted with the 2021 BMW 4

5

Series coupe. The better news is that it should also have a 530-hp electric motor juiced by an 80-kWh battery pack that would give a driving range of around 375 miles. Also on the docket is a dual-motor version that will offer all-wheel drive. Hopefully the production i4 will share at least a few elements of the concept car’s stunning interior, with that rosegold trim, white leather, light wood, and huge glass roof. But because this new i4 is based on the current 3-series, we’re not holding our breath.

CLEAR PERFORMANCE LUCID AIR

6

054_ELECTRICCARS_0221.indd 57

You could be looking at the future of the super-luxe, highperformance, all-electric sedan. The one that could easily have owners of gas-powered rivals, like BMW’s 7 Series, Mercedes’ S-Class, Porsche’s Panamera, and Audi’s A8 checking their car’s trade-in value. Here is the 2021 Lucid Air, the creation of Newark, California–based Lucid Motors, the company best-known (until now) for making batteries for Formula E race cars. Gorgeous to look at, with its sweeping lines, stunning glass canopy, and ultra-spacious cabin, the Air is said to have been inspired by executive jets—and have the performance to match.

Full details will come soon, but for now, the CliffsNotes talk about the flagship Air having a 130-kWh battery pack delivering up to 1,000 horsepower. That means zero-to-60-mph sprinting in less than 2.5 seconds, a top speed of more than 200 mph, and 400-plus miles of driving range. Of course, there will be lesser-juiced models with 100-kWh batteries and rear-drive to qualify for the proposed, though seemingly low, $60,000 starting price. The model you’ll want will probably cost twice that. Or more.

BACK TO THE FUTURE AUDI E-TRON SPORTBACK Looking for a little more style in your all-electric crossover? Audi has followed up its e-tron SUV with the coupe-bodied, four-door e-tron Sportback. Choice is a good thing, right? The cool part here is that despite the ski-slope rear end, Audi says that rear-seat headroom is only down 0.79 inches, with just a 5 percent reduction in trunk size. Like the e-tron crossover, the Sportback uses a 95-kWh battery, with electric motors front and rear to give quattro all-wheel drive.

The front motor produces 184 hp, while the rear makes 224 hp for a combined 355, though Audi claims more than 400 hp for short bursts. Less stellar is the Sportback’s range of 218 miles, though it is up from the SUV’s EPA-rated 204 miles, thanks to the car’s more slippery shape. Rapid chargers can add 58 miles of range in as little as 10 minutes. Prices start at $77,400, with the fancier Edition One models costing $88,495. But don’t forget those federal tax credits of up to $7,500.

7

POWER BROKER PORSCHE TAYCAN TURBO S

There are hip-high, red-blooded, testosterone-infused supercars that aren’t this quick. Off the line, Porsche’s all-electric Taycan Turbo S can unleash its monstrous 750 horsepower—let me repeat: 750 horsepower—and catapult to 60 mph in a mere 2.6 seconds. That’s insane. Adding the word “Turbo” to the title is plain silly; there’s no turbocharger bolted to the Taycan’s electric motor. But it conjures up the kind of neck-snapping performance you get with Porsche’s gas-powered turbo offerings.

58

Beautifully proportioned and exquisitely built, the Taycan is a true Porsche from nose to tail. And like the Panamera, there’s seating for four and plenty of luggage space. Sure, the 192-mile range is weak, but the way it drives isn’t. While the flagship Turbo S will set you back $185,000, there’s a straight Turbo with 670 hp for $150,900, or a 4S with 522 hp from $103,800. Either way, this car is simply electrifying.

RAISING THE ROOF TESLA MODEL Y

Putting to the side those early glitches with bad paint, wide panel gaps, and spotty interior quality, the Model Y probably occupies a top spot on every electric vehicle lover’s wish list. While you may think of it as little more than a tall-roofed, high-waisted, not-quite-an-SUV version of Tesla’s best-selling Model 3 sedan, the Model Y has terrific showroom appeal for crossover fans. One look at that huge glass roof, the optional (though teeny) third row, the 15-inch screen on the dash, and the trunk in the front, and it’s an EV that’s hard

ONE SWEDE RIDE POLESTAR 2 Just don’t call it a Volvo. Even though the Swedish automaker owns Polestar, this is Volvo’s standalone performance-cum-electric brand and they want to keep it special. Following in the tire treads of the stunning looking but ultimately flawed Polestar 1 gas-electric hybrid coupe, the full-electric Polestar 2 is a more-focused effort. That said, we’re still not sure what it’s trying to be. While it looks like a four-door sedan, it has a rear hatch. And that elevated ride height gives it the look of a crossover.

054_ELECTRICCARS_0221.indd 59

to resist. Then you drive the thing. With its 75-kWh battery bank, the potent Performance model can hit 60 mph from standstill in under 3.5 seconds—that’s crazy fast—and run 315 miles on a charge. With prices starting at $49,900 (the must-have Performance stickers at $59,990) the Model Y is set to become Tesla’s top draw. True, the ride is pretty firm and the styling is an acquired taste; but with all its cool tech (hello, Autopilot!) you may find yourself asking, “Y not?”

10

What’s key, however, is its impressive all-electric drivetrain featuring two electric motors resulting in a combined 408-hp output and all-wheel drive traction. Polestar claims a 275-mile range and zero-to-62 acceleration in 4.7 seconds. Good, but still no match for Tesla’s Model 3 Performance. But inside, it’s all lovely Volvo-esque Swedish design, with swathes of eco-friendly vegan fabric—nappa leather is an option—and open-pore wood. «

PERFECT 10 After sampling wines for almost three decades, does our resident wine connoisseur have favorites? You can BET YOUR BORDEAUX he does—and he’s sharing his top 10 list with us. By Mark Spivak

I’ve been reviewing wine professionally since 1992 and have tasted many thousands of wines in the process. A select few are just as vivid in my memory today as the day I tried them. While it’s difficult to generalize about the qualities that make wines unforgettable, the greatest among them are all benchmarks of their type that leave you breathless. The following 10 are not just outstanding efforts in their particular vintage but also come from producers that make great wine more often than not.

DOM PÉRIGNON OENOTHÈQUE ROSÉ, 1990 ($1,400)

Back in 2010, I wrote the first post for my Global Gourmet blog (titled “Dynamic Tension and Sheer Brilliance”) about this Champagne, tasted with winemaker Vincent Chaperon. Chef de cave Richard Geoffroy began the Oenothèque series (now called Plénitude) in order to re-release spectacular vintages at the peak of their maturity. I was indifferent to Dom Pérignon at the time, but this experience turned me around. The wine had an amazing nose of pastry dough, tropical fruits, and candied red berries, along with whiffs of mushroom and truffle. It was intense and complex on the palate, with unfolding layers of rhubarb and red fruits—an incredible Champagne, virtually perfect. And the finish? I’m still thinking about it, and that’s what I call length.

LITTORAI CHARDONNAY, THIERIOT VINEYARD, 1999 ($200, CURRENT VINTAGE $120)

Ted Lemon is making California’s best Chardonnay and Pinot Noir at Littorai. Lemon was the first American to become winemaker at a major estate in Burgundy; when he returned to the U.S., he and his wife, Heidi, scoured Alexander Valley and the Sonoma Coast for high-altitude vineyards that had the potential to produce world-class grapes. Thieriot is farmed organically and biodynamically, with extremely low yields. Upon release, the 1999 was taut and electric; tried many times over the next decade, it evolved into a lush, generous wine with notes of lemon oil, spring flowers, cinnamon, and tropical fruits. If you’re lucky enough to buy the current release today, it will age for 10 to 15 years under the right conditions.

ROUSSANNE VIEILLES VIGNES, CHÂTEAU DE BEAUCASTEL, 2002 ($125, CURRENT VINTAGE $145)

I tasted this old-vine Roussanne at a gastronomic festival on St. Maarten and have remembered it ever since. The floral and herbal nose was infused with citrus notes. On the palate, the wine was full-bodied and complex, offering hints of honey, papaya, peach, and almonds. Produced by one of the most famous estates in Chateauneuf du Pape from 90-year-old vines, it becomes more complex and intriguing with age.

Above: Château de Beaucastel’s Roussanne Vieilles Vignes is aged in a 50/50 blend of stainless-steel tanks and oak barrels for eight months.

4

MEURSAULT LES NARVAUX, DOMAINE LATOUR-GIRAUD, 1999 (CURRENT VINTAGE $75)

I celebrated the millennium with this wine and later served it at my wedding. It had beautiful aromas of citrus, apple, and pear, followed by a rich and unctuous mouthfeel balanced by pinpoint acidity. The LatourGiraud families have been established in Burgundy for three centuries; the Narvaux vineyard is located high on a slope overlooking Meursault, above the premier cru of Genevrières. Because it is a named vineyard but not a premier cru itself, it sells for a fraction of its more famous neighbors.

LE MONTRACHET, MARQUIS DE LAGUICHE, JOSEPH DROUHIN (VARIOUS VINTAGES) In 1993, Robert Drouhin came to Miami for a once-in-alifetime tasting of some of his premier cru and grand cru wines, along with a batch of releases from Domaine Drouhin in Oregon. Although the lineup included mini-verticals of Clos des Mouches (both white and red) and Bonne Mares, Le Montrachet stole the show. 1989 and 1991 were nearly perfect, but 1985 was glorious. A lush, honeyed nose preceded a wine that was tremendously fat and rich, with flavors of citrus, apple, pear, almond, and hazelnut, and a long, teasing finish. All three wines would be worth between $800 and $1,100 today, with the current vintage selling for $550.

6

SASSICAIA, 1985 ($3,300, CURRENT VINTAGE $235)

When there was a shortage of Bordeaux in Tuscany during World War II, Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta decided to plant his own Cabernet. For two decades, Sassicaia was kept for family consumption; after it was released to the public in 1968, it became one of the wines that ignited the Super Tuscan revolution. I’ve been fortunate to have the legendary 1985 several times, and it has been perfect on each occasion. The nose exudes aromas of minerals, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and black currant. In the mouth, the wine is massive yet graceful, with gobs of well-defined blackberry and tart plum flavors, brilliant depth, and firm yet supple tannins. A note on prices: 1988 was the first vintage I was able to buy, for the whopping amount of $40 per bottle at the time; it now sells for $495.

070_WINE__0221.indd 73

BERTANI RECIOTO AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA, 1959 AND 1964 (CURRENT VINTAGE $125)

Many years ago, I was lucky to attend a retrospective tasting of Bertani’s Recioto conducted by Burton Anderson. The 1964 displayed ripe and concentrated flavors of plums, currants, raisins, and berries, with a long, lingering finish haunted by bittersweet echoes. The 1959 was nearly worth killing for. The nose bombarded me with scents of anise, chocolate, and loquats. It was extraordinarily complex in the mouth, with an overload of ripeness and glycerin followed by firm acidity and tannins. The finish was close to endless.

8

CHÂTEAU PÉTRUS, 1995 ($2,850) I was in Bordeaux in the fall of 1996, tasting barrel samples from the 1995 vintage, when I snagged an appointment at Pétrus—one of the hardest vineyard visits in the world to arrange. The property is not marked with a sign, and the modest buildings give no indication that they house the region’s best-known and most expensive wine. They were gracious enough to let me poke around in the vineyard and inspect the ancient Merlot vines before moving inside for the tasting. The wine itself almost defied description: A floral and mineral-infused nose was followed by a sumptuous, concentrated wine filled with the essence of blackberry and black cherry, framed by feather-like tannins. It was seamless, even in its infancy, yet structured enough to outlive me. From top: Villa Mosconi Bertani and Amarone della Valpolicella Classico vineyards; Château Pétrus vineyard. CHÂTEAU LATOUR (NUMEROUS VINTAGES)

Collectors may argue which first growth is “better” than the others, but Latour provides that combination of power and elegance that defines most great wine. I’ve had the legendary 1982 ($2,265) on three occasions, and it was beautifully concentrated, luscious, and seamless. 1990 ($1,050) is a full-blown hedonistic experience: ripe, sweet tannins; glorious, old-vine fruit; succulent flavors of dark berries and plums; and an integrated acid structure. And let’s not forget 2000 ($1,650), which is poised and well-balanced, with mineral-inflected flavors of anise, blackberry jam, and chocolate. This is why people drink Bordeaux.

10

BOND, NAPA

Bill Harlan’s ambitions include nothing less than creating a “California first growth” and a “200-year plan.” He founded Bond in 1996 with Bob Levy, his director of winemaking who had collaborated with him at both Merryvale and Harlan Estate. The goal was to isolate the top vineyards of grand cru quality and produce singular expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards selected for Bond went through an “audition” process that took up to eight or nine years before their wine was finally bottled for commercial sale. I was fortunate to sample the 2004 vintage of Melbury, St. Eden, Vecina, and Pluribus side by side (the fifth vineyard, Quella, didn’t come along until the 2006 vintage). St. Eden ($375), located north of Oakville Crossroad, is the only vineyard situated on the valley floor; it is the most structured and Bordeaux-like in style, with firm minerality and fresh herb accents tempering the black fruits. Melbury ($300) sits on the Rodeo Drive of Napa—Pritchard Hill, overlooking Lake Hennessey; the wine is known for its rich, concentrated fruit and integrated tannins. Vecina ($440), planted on a western slope in Oakville near Harlan Estate, exudes aromas of cedar, flowers, and chocolate, leading to an unctuous and jammy texture filled with flavors of blackberry and cherry. Sweet berries and cassis perfume the nose of Pluribus ($325), from a vineyard planted at 1,100 feet on Spring Mountain; the wine is opulent and full-bodied, but with enough balancing acidity to appear graceful. All four are reminders of the importance of terroir in winemaking. «

GOURMAND Nouveau wines, like Beaujolais, might become more prevalent due to issues surrounding smoke taint.

OFF THE VINE

UP IN FLAMES

How severe West Coast WILDFIRES can SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACT wine quality By Mark Spivak

Red wines, such as Pinot Noir, are more susceptible to smoke taint.

A cool and mild growing season followed by a hot, dry August that yielded small and concentrated grapes sounded like the recipe for a perfect vintage throughout most of California and the Pacific Northwest—except for the wildfires, of course. 2020 was the worst wildfire season in modern California history, with more than 4 million acres burned and billions of dollars in property damage. The situation in parts of Oregon and Washington wasn’t much better. On the surface, the threat to the vintage may not seem too serious, as only about 20 wineries were either partially or completely destroyed. The wild card, however, is smoke taint. Unlike in 2017, when we witnessed another round of horrific West Coast wildfires, the 2020 fires occurred before the grapes had been harvested. Burning wood releases volatile phenols that can affect grapes after as little as 30 minutes

From top: White wines, including Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, are less impacted by smoke taint; recent wildfires in the Napa Valley could have a ripple effect on 2020 vintages.

of exposure. Last summer and fall, the smoke lingered for weeks, and air quality was unhealthy as far away as San Francisco. While wine made from grapes affected by smoke taint isn’t bad for you, neither is it pleasant; it typically gives off a plastic or medicinal smell, along with aromas of wet cigar and ash. Research conducted in Australia indicates several ways of mitigating smoke taint in contaminated grapes, including reverse osmosis and treatment with activated charcoal. The identification and mitigation of smoke taint will likely be a big industry on the West Coast for the foreseeable future. Fortunately, the damage was not universal. The worst regions were northern Napa, from Calistoga down to St. Helena, and parts of Sonoma (a large radius around the town of Santa Rosa and the area west of Healdsburg).

Smoke taint is worse for red wines because the volatile phenols collect in the skins. This isn’t good news for the hardest-hit areas of Napa, since the main cash crop there is Cabernet Sauvignon, nor does it bode well for the thin-skinned Pinot Noir. While many of the top West Coast wineries may take the high road and release little or no red wine in 2020, others may not be able to afford to be quite as selective. Given all this, what’s a consumer to do? Here’s a quick guide to what we know at this point: Rosé will be a good red ○ Drink lots of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. wine alternative this year. TECH REVOLUTION By learning about and embracing AI, today’s students prepare for the workforce of tomorrow By Judy Martel Artificial intelligence, that relatively little-known, swiftly evolving technology, is poised to become as ubiquitous as the internet, making a significant impact on our daily lives and changing the nature of the economy and the workforce. Yet while China and the United States are generally recognized as the world leaders in AI, some experts fear a looming employment gap could leave the U.S. scrambling to catch up to other countries and to the speed of the technology itself. Love it or fear it, AI—which is defined as machine-learning science that essentially teaches computers to process data with the result that they can “think” and make decisions the way humans do—is here to stay. “Artificial intelligence is advancing very rapidly in an exciting way, and we have to start thinking about jobs and how to readjust,” says William Hahn, an assistant professor in the mathematical sciences department at Florida Atlantic University and co-founder and co-director of the school’s Machine Perception and Cognitive Robotics Laboratory. He sees a major challenge in educating not only the upcoming workforce who will lead the way,

but the general public who will have to learn how to incorporate it into their lives. The U.S. is at the forefront when it comes to the higher education of future computer scientists, Hahn notes, proven by the fact that students from other countries flock to our universities. “Ninety percent of the seats in computer science classes at the graduate level are filled by foreign nationals.” He believes that a dearth of tech-specific education early on might account for why more U.S. students do not pursue the field in greater numbers. “China is moving very quickly in this space, and there is a tremendous need to start teaching computer science early and often, but the typical narrative here is to get involved late.” Hahn already sees self-taught youngsters outpacing older computer science students, in what he calls a “weird inversion” wherein amateurs are speeding ahead in the learning curve. “I have high schoolers coming to see me who already know what AI is and how it’s used,” he says. “Our educational systems are actually getting in the way.” While he says it’s difficult to

“disrupt” the curriculum at the elementary school level, basic teachings in technology should at least be a supplemental program like athletics and arts. “I think we need that type of culture in our education system.” To develop that culture, Hahn says elementary and high school systems should redirect more funding toward the computer sciences, starting with a history class in technology. “If I could point to one thing we could do, it would be that. Kids think iPhones come from the mall. They have no idea that human hands made them, so how are they supposed to know how we got to where we are now?” Students who have no aptitude for the sciences will still benefit from a basic understanding of the capabilities and possibilities of AI. Hahn points to the fact that Steve Jobs, the late CEO of Apple, didn’t write a single line of code, but he had the vision to launch a digital revolution that resulted in the devices people now depend on every day.

100_WEALTH_0121.indd 101

When it comes to public education, Hahn envisions centers, sort of like libraries, where people can learn about AI. “At the community level, it almost needs to be like fitness centers, where everyone can go,” he says. Initial plans for the new artificial intelligence lab at FAU included specified hours for the public to use the “supercomputers.” In the meantime, some top-notch universities like MIT are putting educational content online—often via YouTube—that can be accessed for free. While adults may have to “crawl before they can run,” Hahn notes, a basic understanding of AI is not that difficult and worth the effort to learn. “We have to embrace technology, not run away.” «
