TALENTED CHEFS AND INNOVATIVE RESTAURATEURS FUEL THE AVENUE’S REPUTATION AS A FOODIE PARADISE
With more than three dozen restaurants, cafés, sweet shops, and bars, Fifth Avenue South has been a regional gastronomic epicenter that draws foodies from near and far for four decades. A launching pad for chefs and restaurateurs who have gone on to expand their innovative concepts, it is a sought-after hot spot for proprietors with an eye on opening new crowd favorites. Exciting developments over the past year are proof of the dining scene’s dynamism.
In 2023, Phelan Family Brands acquired three decades-old landmarks— Pazzo! Cucina Italiana, Chops City Grill, and Yabba Island Grill. The family-owned restaurant group gave Yabba a multimillion-dollar makeover and a new concept as Keewaydin’s on Fifth, which opened in January 2024 with a focus on fresh sea-
food. Pazzo! and Chops City Grill remain tried-and-true favorites under the locally headquartered Phelan Family Brands, founded more than 25 years ago.
Chef Vincenzo Betulia, the award-winning co-founder of Campagna Hospitality Group, began with Osteria Tulia in 2013 and has added three more restaurants on the avenue—Bar Tulia, The French Brasserie Rustique, and most recently, Rouge Clandestine Steak. In the past two years, he also launched Tulia Catering and hired an executive pastry chef for his restaurants.
Diners already enjoy two of Cameron Mitchell Restaurants’ fine-dining venues on the avenue, Ocean Prime and Del Mar. In 2025, the restaurant group is introducing its latest concept: Prime Social, a lively rooftop lounge with indoor and outdoor seating serving oysters, sushi
rolls, and light bites. Prime Social will be located on the third floor above Chops City Grill at the corner of Sixth Street South, where patrons can savor panoramic views.

EDMOND AND LEDIA METAJ ARE EXPANDING THEIR HOSPITALITY WITH A NEW RESTAURANT OFFERING AN OTTIMO CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE AND MODERN ITALIAN CUISINE
With 30 years of experience in hospitality, Edmond and Ledia Metaj decided to launch their own venture when they took over Roma Italian Bistro & Pizzeria in 2020.
Edmond had worked in many roles with several high-profile establishments in Collier County and wanted to bring his 15 years of customer service excellence with The Ritz-Carlton, Naples to his own clientele. “It was my dream to be on Fifth Avenue South,” he says. Roma had been a basic pizzeria on Fifth Avenue South for more than 10 years before the Metajs “changed everything,” he says. “We’ve worked hard to make this place shine.”
They expanded the menu to highlight their house-made piccata, marsala, marinara, and Bolognese sauces. “The sauce is the key ingredient,” he says. Their signature dishes—including mushroom risotto drizzled with truffle oil, meatballs, lobster ravioli, and chicken parmigiana—alongside a tasty array of pizzas, have built a loyal following. “Everything is fresh and delicious,” he says. “My goal was to be one of the hot spots, a small one. Attention to customers is our No. 1 priority. When you come for the first time, you feel like you’ve been here forever.” Adds Ledia, “It feels like home.”
Thirty years ago, the Metajs emigrated to the United States
and moved to the Naples area more than 20 years ago. They are originally from Albania, which is across the Adriatic Sea from the boot of Italy and explains their passion for the cuisine. “We grew up with Italian food, music, and culture,” Ledia says. They both speak Italian, too.
Their following has grown so much that they are relocating to a larger space on the avenue, with plans to be open by December 2024. During season, he explains, “it’s impossible to accommodate everyone. A lot of people come and can’t find a seat.”
With the move to 409 Fifth Ave. S. comes a new name: Ottimo on 5th—Cucina & Bar. (Ottimo means excellent, optimal, or optimum in Italian.) With a full bar, expanded dining area, and larger kitchen, they will focus on modern Italian cuisine and offer an expansive list of wine, beer, and craft cocktails. It gives them more space, he notes, “to make more happy customers.”

COCOON GALLERY’S ONE-OF-A-KIND, ORGANIC DESIGNS HAVE SPREAD TO PALM BEACH AFTER GENERATING A HIGH DEMAND IN NAPLES
Mitchell Siegel travels the world, bringing back exotic wood and precious minerals to create one-of-a-kind furnishings and statement pieces, which he calls “functional art.” Cocoon Gallery’s pieces are crafted from organic materials sourced from remote parts of the globe. The founder of Cocoon, Siegel holds a permit to import exotic species of wood from Southeast Asia, Brazil, and other tropical locations.
After two decades in Greenwich, Connecticut, Siegel and his partner bought a building on Fifth Avenue South and opened his shop in January 2020 after doing a flyover of the city to inspect its growth from an aerial perspective. His downtown gallery “was a success from opening the door—and has been ever since,” he says.
In 2022, he moved the Greenwich woodshop to Naples, establishing a 25,000-square-foot workshop and warehouse where artisans transform the raw materials into sculptures, wall art, shell lamps, striking root sculptures, and geode crystal, agate, and jasper accessories. The design team specializes in live-edge dining and coffee tables and hand-carved teak tables and consoles. Cocoon offers proprietary crushed Capiz shell wall plates with inlay and a resin finish that create a focal point.
At the workshop, the artisans also customize pieces for shoppers, interior designers, and architects. Buyers can see an array of finished products and materials, and watch their own pieces being made. “It’s a fascinating place to see,” says Siegel, the creative force behind Cocoon. “Every day is something new. We’re creative here.”
Since the beginning, Cocoon has focused on sustainability. Siegel emphasizes that he sources fallen trees— and a new tree is planted for each one removed from the wilds. In the creative, talented hands of Cocoon artisans, these natural treasures undergo a metamorphosis into modern, functional art destined to become heirloom statement pieces.
Siegel’s success in Naples inspired him to open a store in Palm Beach along with another workshop in West Palm Beach on Florida’s East Coast in January 2024.
WHAT HAS LED TO YOUR SUCCESS IN NAPLES?
We felt our type of merchandise would work very well— and it has. We put a lot of effort and time into the production of inventory that this market demands. They don’t come for one item but for many pieces.
—Mitchell Siegel, Founder, Cocoon Gallery

Another Leap for Beauty
NAPLES SOAP COMPANY, A PIONEERING HEALTH AND WELLNESS BRAND, IS BOUNDING HIGHER WITH NASA’S 3D BIOMETRIC TECHNOLOGY
It all began when Deanna Wallin, a local registered nurse, struggled to find reliable remedies for her eczema and psoriasis. With a bathroom cabinet filled with ineffective lotions and ointments, she decided to create her own natural, organic skin care products. In 2009, Wallin launched Naples Soap Company with a small shop in Tin City. Today, Naples Soap Company has 13 retail locations in Florida and its products are distributed to 300 wholesale clients, including boutiques, hotels, and spas (such as the Spa on Fifth at the Inn on Fifth). Wallin reports that her brand has expanded to 600 products—including therapeutic bath bombs, allergen-free parfum, loofah and eczema soaps, body scrubs, shower spray, and shampoo and hair conditioner bars.
And there’s more in store. She has launched a sensitive skin care line called Grow Beautii that will be sold in major national retail chains including department and big box stores and pharmacies. Grow Beautii will include mild cleaners and soothing moisturizers specially formulated for users of all ages with skin conditions. Product formulas will include premium, all-natural ingredients that soothe the skin, including goat’s milk, coconut oil, sea salt,
witch hazel, and aloe vera.
Wallin also is creating a new line incorporating 3D stem cell formulas utilizing technology developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for use in personal care products. “Stem cells grown in standard labs are typically grown in a 2D petri dish setting,” according to Wallin. “Naples Soap Company will use superior ingredients generated from 3D stem cells grown in a NASA-designed, zero-gravity bioreactor in Florida.”
The proprietary complex combines 33 different components to nourish the skin, such as hyaluronic acid, vital nutrients, amino acids, and proteins including collagen and cytokines—growth factors that stimulate cell growth and tissue repair. “We are beyond excited to launch our new line providing cutting-edge products our customers expect and deserve,” says Wallin
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT OWNING A BUSINESS ON FIFTH AVENUE SOUTH?
The people—absolutely the people. It’s always lively and the people are engaging. It’s always nice to do business with people who are in a good mood. They’re on vacation or going to dinner with friends and family. That’s where we thrive. Our customer base makes it feel like home for us.

A Treasure Trove
THE FAMILY-OWNED PEACH TREE DESIGNS HAS BEEN AN AVENUE GO-TO FOR UNIQUE HOME ACCESSORIES AND FURNISHINGS FOR MORE THAN TWO DECADES
Judy and Bob Collins had two successful stores in Cape Cod when they began scouting a new location to escape the frigid New England winters. After a 1996 visit to Naples, the following year they opened Peach Tree Designs on Fifth Avenue South, where they’ve thrived. In 2002, they acquired the space next door and doubled in size.
In Massachusetts, Judy got her start by painting her designs to create one-of-a-kind baskets, home accessories, and small furnishings, which she sold to Cape Cod shops and eventually through the Neiman Marcus catalog. Judy, who earned a degree in fashion design, “has always been a very creative person,” says daughter Stacie Carroll. When Judy and Bob decided to relocate their boutique to Naples, “they enlisted my help to open the store shortly after I returned from a long backpacking trip around Europe,” recalls Stacie, who earned a business degree at the University of New Hampshire. “What I thought would be a short, two-year commitment turned into 27 years!”
With an extensive selection of unusual merchandise, gifts, and home accessories, the Wall Street Journal has called the shop “a treasure trove of a home store.” Peach Tree Designs also works closely with interior designers, providing them with
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT BEING IN A FAMILY BUSINESS?

to-the-trade access to wholesale lines and support in executing their projects.
Today, Judy and Bob are semi-retired, spending half the year working at the Naples store. As the full-time manager, Stacie wears many hats. “On any given day, I could be the delivery driver, warehouse manager, merchandise buyer, head of human resources, director of marketing—you name it,” she says.
Since opening their doors, the family team has emphasized personalized customer service in an inspiring, warm atmosphere. “We cannot imagine being anywhere else but Fifth Avenue South,” Stacie says. “Whether you’re a local or a tourist, you’re simply happy to be here, so interacting with our customers is always a pleasure.”
Bistro 821 located on the trendy and cosmopolitan Fifth Avenue South, in the heart of Naples, is the longest running restaurant on Fifth Avenue South. We are a neighborhood gem where locals and visitors alike come to dine. Our menu offers a variety of fresh seafood, choice steaks and house-made risottos. We source the finest ingredients available from locally owned and operated vendors. Our creative cocktails and mouthwatering meals will leave you wanting more!

THE SCENE: Arts & Culture
TICKLE YOUR MUSE ON THE AVENUE
IN THE LIMELIGHT
The curtain has risen on The Naples Players’ $22 million renovation and expansion to Sugden Community Theatre—in time for its 71st season.
The state-of-the art Kizzie Theater, the main stage, has expanded to 452 seats. Kizzie Theater features a balcony, hearing-assistance technologies, and a sensory booth where the temperature, volume, and brightness can be independently controlled by theatergoers who have sensoryprocessing disorders.
The 45,000-square-foot Sugden Community Theatre also has two 105-seat black box theaters, with one dedicated to educational programs and KidzAct productions.
The Naples Players CEO/Executive Artistic Director Bryce Alexander is thrilled to have costume and set-design shops, dressing rooms, rehearsal space, an usher’s lounge, café, and bar under one roof. “It’s fundamental to our mission for the community to be able to access those spaces every day,” he says.
The premier, award-winning community theater mounts 14 productions each year, in addition to its Readers Theatre and world premieres of new works. “Essentially, there’s a new production in the building every month, sometimes two. It’s a year-round organization,” says Alexander. “We don’t stop producing at any time.”
The only certified LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) theater in Florida, the renovations of the home of The Naples Players were completely funded by private donations.
“It’s entirely from contributors and donors—no state, county, or city money,” he says. “There’s no question that Naples is one of the most philanthropically generous cities in the United States.”
Since Alexander took the helm in 2017, The Naples Players has expanded its outreach with 30 nonprofit partnerships and “Wellness Through the Arts” programs. “We impact people in so many ways in addition to the 55,000 we entertain each year,” he says.
He’s proud to note that the Sugden was named “Favorite Local Theatre” in 2022 and 2023 by Broadway World. “Our facility is so renowned, we are looking to establish our reputation nationally for how regional theaters operate—how they engage their communities,” Alexander says. “The Naples Players might be the only place where a Broadway conductor will fly down and conduct local volunteers.” (naplesplayers.org)
The Naples Players opened its 71st season with a production of 42nd Street in the new Kizzie Theater.
