SANFORD BOND My career has focused on creating places by defining space with various materials and building methods. Primarily as an architect, I create places for human use and habitation using a palette of different materials with a range of spatial definitions in order to define discreet regions of space accommodating various human endeavors. Every material possesses a set of characteristics rendering it different from any other and lending it to a particular building method. These innate qualities may be used to define unique and different places enabling a range of use and meaning, differing with the person and their unique set of experiences. There are four families of spatial definition that are generated by different building methods: continuous surface, linear assemblage, planar assemblage and capsules. Each family has particular characteristics which are responses to the material, how it is made, what it will add up to, and how it goes together. A planar piece has a constant thickness that is not of usable depth and has a two- sided reference, that is, each side is a constant distance from the other and one always knows where the other side is located. Typically, it has a thin depth relative to its extent in the other dimensions limiting its size unless it is reinforced with another planar piece, a linear piece or a continuous surface. I have chosen to work with planar assemblages in my sculpture using certain materials that lend themselves to this building method: wood, steel and acrylic. The sculpture is spatial exploration done in the abstract rather than focused on particular uses. As analogs to reality, they have no actual scale rather the viewer supplies his own perception of the reality within the piece. By intensifying definition, place is suggested subject to the experience of the viewer. The titles suggest my perception of the piece and the idea that was my point of origin. At once they are cities of tall buildings, inhabited squares, plazas or verdant forests one might wonder through depending on one’s feeling at the time and limited only by the imagination. The more recent work has explored color. Working with sheets of acrylic with characteristics of solid, translucency, transparency, light transmittance and color juxtapositions, I am working with the innate attributes of the material, combining planes of color into assemblages with sometimes surprising results.
