Amy Chan
Statement My paintings are fragments of the natural world multiplied into abstraction. I am interested taking forms drawn from life and morphing them into my own visual language. With cues from microscopic imagery, geometry and pattern, I build a visual vocabulary that is abstract but with remnants of the concrete. Joyously artificial color palettes infuse the paintings with humor and pop nostalgia. This series completed in 2022 builds from a body of small pandemic drawings, delighting in pure flat colors and an interplay of dimensional shapes. The works hold optimism and humor while playing with the materiality of gouache.
Bio Amy Chan’s work can be found in the collections of the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, The Spencer Museum of Art and Capital One. She has received grants from the Pollock Krasner Foundation and the Virginia Commission for the Arts. Amy Chan lives in Richmond teaches at the University of Virginia.
