US Navy Honor, Courage, And Commitment

Honor, Courage, and Commitment are the back bone to the U.S. Navy they infuse the Navy with a living life blood an unfaultable force. Honor to me is associated with pride not the seven deadly sins pride, but more like taking a personal ownership in all that you do so that you present your absolute best every time. As an officer this is the standard that should be strived for and extended upon; the taking of ownership not only of tasks, but the well being of your sailors as well. Courage to me has many forms it could be that sailor/soldier who gets a soft whisper in their ear that tells them to enlist so they can stand on the front lines to protect others, or the kid who takes his and others fears and takes a stand against the playground

Navy Chiefs in Men of Honor

Introduction

The movie Men of Honor stars Robert De Niro as Master Chief Leslie "Billy" Sunday and Cuba Gooding, Jr as Chief Carl Brashear. The movie is loosely based on the real life story of Chief Carl Brashear, the first black man to become a Master Deep Sea Diver in the US Navy. The movie takes place during the 1950s and 1960s in the US. During that time, racism and discrimination was a society norm. The movie uses drama and writer's freedom of expression to tell the story of the hardships Chief Brashear faced in his quest to become a Master Diver. The movie was released on November 10, 2000 in the United States theatres (Cinema.com, 2000).

That respect showed through during the final test. The school commanding officer made it clear that Brashear was not to pass. The Chiefs working on the dock with Master Chief understood the Captain's order. They made sure to make it hard on Brashear to force him to give up by cutting his tool bag. However, Master Chief stayed on the docks until Petty Officer Brashear was able to complete the valve even though it took 9 hours in the extremely cold water.

Master Chief has a problem with authority during the entire movie and as a result of several outbreaks (including hitting LCDR Hanks in the nose), had been demoted to Chief. Yet, Chief Sunday approached Senior Chief Brashear to help him get ready for a medical review board and return to active service. Chief Sunday kept putting Senior Chief Brashear's needs and interest above his own. Of course, having the chance to defeat Chief Sunday's mortal enemy, now Captain Hanks, was just icing on the cake.
