THE SITE WAS SURROUNDED BY HILLS ON ALL FOUR SIDES MAKING A FUNNEL WHICH SUCKED PREDOMINENT WIND TOWARDS NORTH EAST AXIS. THIS WAS ADVANTAGEOUS TO CAPITALISE IN THE DESIGN PROCESS.
STARTING THE DESIGN BY ORIENTING THE HOUSING COMPLEX TOWRDS THE NORTH ALLOWS US TO MAKE THE MOST OF DAY LIGHT.
BY THE PLACEMENT OF THE SWIMMING POOL & WATERBODY IN THE RPIMARY WIND PATH,WE CAN PROMOTE PASSIVE COOLING WHICH CAN BE A HUGE EFFECT DURING THE DRY SUMMER OF SOUTH INDIA.FOR THIS REASON THE ACTIVITY ZONE HAS BEEN ZONED IN WINDWARD REGION.
MAKING A CUT IN THE MIDDLE TO CAPITALISE THE PREDOMINENT WIND,ALLOWS EXCELLENT VENTILATION THROUGHOUT THE INHABITING SPACES.
THE LEVEL DIFFERENCES ACROSS VARIOUS ZONES IS MADE TO CREATE A VISUAL BARIER SO THE PRIVACY OF THE RESIDENCES IS NOT COMPRAMISED,AND THE VIEWS FROM LIVING AREA IS ENHANCED.THE TWO SIDES OF RESIDENCES ARE CONNECTED BY CENTRAL BRIDGE.THE CENRAL CUT ACTS AS A SPINE WHICH IS DESIGNED TO HAVE A BEAUTIFUL WALKWAY TO TRIGGER CURIOSITY TO THE USER,LEADING TO THE POOLDECK.

The given site is a 10 acre property of flattened land with stepped levels.the site is surrounded by mounatins tucked away from urban environment making it a perfect spot for progressive Education. the site also has a cultivable area used for organic farming which is highlited above.
basic zoning is demarcated on the basis of the levels and ease of circulation for different age groups of users.The bufferzone becomes the transition between the two.
Restricting the junior class groups to the ground floor for ease & safety. junior classes placed near farmland & kindergarten on the opposite side which opens to their play area.Senior zone houses Creative & Technical labs on the Ground Floor.

All the zones are pivoted with 3 Important blocks namely-admin,staff & library.
The bufferzone becomes a transition space between junior & senior blocks. placing Outdoor cafe and outdoor games with interesting pathways and informal seating makes it the most vibrant and happening areas in the campus.
The space between the blocks becomes spillover area which is landscaped with numerous usable space. mainly the OAT seating is integrated with the access to the level 1.2(the buffer zone).
Inorder to break the facade of the campus and blur the lines between nature and built space, the first floor class rooms take cues from the neibhouring mounatins and the roof of this form is green. complimenting both interior and the exterior.
For the Access to the first floor, the roof slab is pushed down to create a ramp.which invites studnets with their bicycle.In this way the building and the outdoor becomes one and studnets wont feel like entering a building but driving to a garden. cycling to different zones also keeps the physical activitys of kids on point.
The different zones are connected with 3 bridges, one dropping down to the buffer zone, one going over the buffer zone to connect the senior block, and two other bridhes connecting the opposite blocks (Highligted in blue).

BRIEF THE GOAL WAS TO CHOOSE A SITE OF OUR CHOICDE AND DEVELOP A RESIDENCE FOR A PERSON WHOSE PROFESSION IS CINEMATOGRAPHY. THE DESIGN SHOULD ACCOMODATE FAMILY OF 4 PEOPLE INCLUDING THE CINEMATOGRAPHER.

BRIEF DESIGNING A LIMINAL SPACE WITH CONTEXT OF OUR CHOICE. WE CHOSE JAIL AS IT IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE FOR A LIMINAL SPACE. WE REDESIGNED THE ENTRANCE TO THE JAIL BY ACCOMODATING ALL THE FUNCTIONS REQUIRED.

VELLORE CENTRAL PRISON EXTERIOR VIEW
The journey of a convict into the prison is a one with varied emotions at it’s pinacle. fear,anger,regret sadness,hope and everything one can think of. The journey of the convicted comes to an end in the space which is literally the silverline between freedom & confinement. The processing zone of the prison is truly a betwixt space for every person who takes it. the site we chose for designing liminal space with this context is vellore prison. vellore has been synonym to it’s famous jail. the history of this prison dates back to brithish rule era. this prison has housed leaders like kamaraj, karunanidhi , periyar to name few. however this prison has changed little since then. the space exisiting is highly fucntion oriented and little thought has been given to the comfort of its users. the visitors zone is completly exculded from the main zone causing discomfort to the funtional low and spoils the aesthetic of the place. the Space we intend to design consits of three primary functions. visitor zone, prisoner processing zone & administrative functions. we took these functions and staggered them on top of one another for the ease of functional flow. the design solution & process is described above. by the virtue of the nature of the function, the freedom of designing is restricted to certain degree. this was a challenge.however it gave us a start and the solution is both functinally and aethetically pleasent. the comfort of all the primary users was the most important factor of the deisgn.

THE PRESENT VELLORE JAIL ENTRANCE CONTAINS 3 GATE SYSTEM WHICH IS A NORM IN TN PRISONS. THE 1ST GATE IS FOR THE ENTRY INTO THE FRONT SPACE OF PRISONS WHICH HAS PARKINGS AND WAITING/FRISKING AREA FOR VISITORS. THE SECOND GATE IS FOR EMPLOYEES & PRISONER. AND 3RD LEADS TO PRISON PREMISE. THERE IS NO OTHER ENTRY INSIDE THE PREMISES.
THE THREE PRIMARY FUNCTIONS, VISITOR MEETING ROOM,PRISON ENTRY, AND ADMIN AREA ARE STACKED ON TOP OF EACH OTHER. ADDING LEVELS TO PRISON ENTRY ALLOWS US TO TO CAPTILASE THE NATURAL LIGHT INTO THE VISITOR MEETING AREA THROUGH THE RISER OF STAIR
THE VISITOR ZONE IS PLACED ON THE -0.45 LEVEL TO RESTRICT THE OVERALL HEIGHT OF THE DEISGN. THIS SINK ALONG WITH LIGHT PENETRATION THROUGH THE STAIR FLIGHT CREATES DRAMA AND GIVES GIMPLES OF VIEWS TO PRISONER FROM THE OTHER SIDE.GIVING HIM SOMETHING TO HOPE AND LIVE ON FOR.

OUR MAIN PROCESSING ZONE WHICH HOUSES FUNCTIONS LIKE FRISKING ZONE,REGISTER OFFICE AND THE 2ND GATE (ONLY ENTRY INTO THE PRISON PREMISE) IS PLACED ON +1.8 LEVEL. THIS LEVEL DIFFERNECE GIVES THE FRONT GUARDS A BETTER GRIP ON EYEING ALL THE PEOPLE ENTERING THE COMPOUND.
THE ADMIN FLOOR, THE TOP MOST LEVEL HOUSES ALL THE IMPORTANT PRISON EMPLOYEES. ITS PLACED ON TOP SO THEY CAN HAVE A CLEAR VIEW OF BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE PRISON GIVING THEM THE UPPERHAND OF VIEWS.
