Mustangs roll into new league on the wing Patience. Passion. Pride. Preparation. Program. Just a few watch words for the 2012 Iola High Mustang football season. “We all want to succeed right now, win right now. I’m stressing patience to the players, to us coaches, to parents and to fans,” said Doug Kerr, the Mustangs’ new head football coach. “We’ve been really happy with the way these kids have bought into our system. We have a new coaching staff, a new offense and a new defense. That all fits with a new league to play in this season.” Kerr, a Derby native, returned to Kansas after coaching and teaching in Florida for 14 years to take the reins of the Mustang football program. He is a firm believer high school football is big time under the Friday night lights no matter where the game is played. Iola switched from the Southeast Kansas League to the Pioneer League this season. The Mustangs still have three SEK teams on their schedule — longtime archrival Chanute and Fort Scott are in Iola’s Kansas Class 4A district, both games are at home for the Mustangs. Iola goes to Coffeyville for the third game of the season. The Mustangs have played four of the five other Pioneer League teams in the past few years. Anderson County is still in Iola’s 4A district and Prairie View was in last district alignment with
Iola. Iola has played Central Heights and Osawatomie. Wellsville is a new opponent and Iola travels up north to take on the Eagles on Oct. 5. But all the preparation so far by the Mustangs has been to get ready for the season opener Friday night. Cherryvale High’s Chargers, a new opponent out of the Tri-Valley League, comes to Iola’s Riverside Stadium. “One of the big assets we have is our players’ ability to learn the new system quickly. Our kids are picking up the single-wing offense and the 3-6 defense we’ve installed. We saw a strong group of kids throughout the summer in the weight lifting program,” Kerr said. The Mustangs are coming off a 2-7 season. Their main offensive weapon graduated. “Now it’s time for others to step up and be the guys. Our offense is not a spread offense but we’ll spread the carrying of the football around by design,” Kerr said. Iola has seven returning See Mustangs | page 16

New coach leads Fillies into Pioneer League
Fresh start. With a new head coach the Iola Fillies will go into a new league for the 2012 volleyball season. “It’s a fresh start for our volleyball program. That’s what we’re building here — a program,” said Emily Sigg, first-year head coach. “We’re a younger team with just three seniors on the squad so we’re excited about this season.” Sigg is all too familiar with the IHS volleyball tradition. She, too, is a former IHS volleyball player. Two-thirds of the coaching staff is new this season. Steven Stockebrand, a Yates Center native, joins Sigg and Jeff Fehr. Fehr is in his third season coaching the freshman team. Iola opens its first season in the Pioneer League after being a charter member of the Southeast Kansas League. The Fillies still play several of the SEK teams, especially at the junior varsity and freshman levels. Pioneer League foes are Anderson County in Garnett, Prairie View at LaCygne,

“They all came to conditioning and have worked hard at practice. I was impressed with their serving,” Sigg said. “Overall, we’ve focused on fundamentals early and conditioning. These girls are coming in every day ready to work. We need to develop communication skills so we talk to each other on the court.” Sigg said the Fillies have strong hitters, good setters and passers on the team. She said the consistency factor goes through all aspects from serving to hitting. “That’s what we’re striving for — consistency. If we get that, we can be successful.” Iola opened its 2012 season last weekend in a varsity and junior varsity tournament at Prairie View. The Fillies return to LaCygne Thursday to play Prairie View and Fort Scott.
Wellsville, Central Heights at Richmond and Osawatomie. Iola posted a 7-26 overall mark last year. Returning seniors are Keli Lee, Breanna Stout and Katie Thompson. Lee, who is sidelined right now with a knee injury, played libero — defensive specialist — on the back row for Iola last year. Stout and Thompson saw limited varsity duty as hitters. “Breanna is an outside hitter for us. She can really get up at the net and has power in her swings. She’s also a very good passer plus is a strong team leader,” Sigg said. “Katie is doing a good job of placing her hits as a middle hitter. Katie is our tallest girl (5-11) on the team and she should be effective blocking at the net.” Sigg said Lee will continue to play libero “if she gets healthy.” The player back with the most varsity experience is 5-9 sophomore Emery Driskel. Driskel had 25 kills plus six solo blocks and eight assisted blocks at the net. Driskel can hit from either side and from the middle.
“Emery was selected to the all-star team at the Pittsburg State team camp in July and that’s a big honor. She’s improving her serving and passing skills plus she sets the ball pretty well. She gets to a lot of volleyballs with her quickness,” Sigg said. Sophomore Kyra Moore is back as starting setter. She led the team in set assists a year ago with 205. Moore also served the most ace serves, 18, as a 92 percent server. “Kyra is an excellent setter and can hit the ball at the net. She’s left-handed, which can confuse blocks when she goes up to hit. To be successful, we need to be consistent with our passing and setting,” Sigg said. Junior Emma Sigg logged limited varsity time last year. She is working as a libero and is improving as an outside hitter. Coach Sigg said Emma Sigg is a good passer giving depth in the back row. Sophomore Emma Piazza is a setter and a strong all-around player. Piazza is a great outside hitter and blocker at the net, Sigg said. “With Kyra and Emma,
we have two solid setters so we should be able to run a 6-2 offense. We’re still seeing where everybody fits and what we have to work with. We’ve been encouraged by the way the girls have worked over the summer and in practices,” Sigg said. Juniors Hannah Endicott, Karlie Lower, Paige Miller, Allie Cleaver and Halie Cleaver are back, plus sophomores Addie Haar, Torrie Lewis, Shelby Smith and Katie Shields. Lower gives depth at the setter spot and Halie Cleaver is a strong back row player with her passing. Haar has stepped up as a power hitter with good placement on her hits. Sigg said Haar is working to hit quick sets. Miller, Endicott, Smith, Lewis and Shields are developing into good hitters. Timing is an issue right now for the younger hitters in working on their approach to the net on attacks. Sigg said the Fillies have a good group of freshmen with advanced skill sets. She said it was because a lot of them have played club volleyball in the off-season.

Line play is key for Marmaton Valley The Marmaton Valley High Wildcats are rolling into 2012 with confidence. Coming off one of the better football seasons it has had in several years, Marmaton Valley is ready for another run to the playoffs. The Wildcats (7-3) lost seven players to graduation but a nine-player senior class leads the Cats. All are seasoned players on one side of the football or the other and some on both offense and defense. “We have a big senior class and they’ve been a part of what this program has done the past couple of seasons,” said Kent Houk, who is in his third season as head coach. “We’re not very deep, but we have quality players. “Just like any team, we have to stay healthy.” Marmaton Valley has 22 players in its efforts to strike out for another Kansas EightMan Division I, District 2 championship. The Wildcats claimed a bi-district title, then lost in a regional game. “We were one of the final eight teams remaining in the playoffs when we lost last year,” Houk said. “Our guys have worked hard in the off-season to get better so we can take another run into the playoffs.” Offensively, the Wildcats have a full backfield returning led by All-Three Rivers League running back Cole Becker. The 5-9, 190-pound senior rushed for 1,600 yards and earned all-state honors. Jimmy Frye, a 6-1, 175-pound senior will direct the Wildcat offense as quarterback. and 170 pounds, senior Daylen Houk is the other running back. All-TRL lineman Nathan Smart, a 6-4, 265-pound senior, anchors the offensive line as guard. Smart, who received all-state recognition last year, was “the workhorse on the line for us. We ran behind him a lot,” Houk said. Senior Jared Kale, 6-3 and 215, is back as another guard on the line. Kale earned TRL honorable mention. Lucas Hamlin, a 6-1, 185-pound senior, has moved from tight end to center along the offensive line. Levi Ramsey, who earned TRL honorable mention as a special teams player last year, is vying for a spot on the line as is junior Sage Hall. “Line play is going to seal the deal for us. If our big guys block up front, we’re going to run the ball very well. Cole, Daylen and Jimmy give us three options running the football and Jimmy throws the ball well,” Houk said. Houk looks for juniors Lane Hamm, Joey Jefferis and Nick Trollope to make an
impact and sophomore Trent Johnson. Hamm is 6-foot and 270 and Jefferis is 5-11 and 210 giving the Wildcats a little more depth on the line. Trollope is the backup quarterback and Johnson is working as tight end behind Hall. Seniors Ryan Smith and Carlos Gonzales are expected to see playing time in the backfield. Kale led the Wildcats in quarterback sacks last year as defensive end. Smart is back on the defensive while Becker, Houk and Frye lead the linebacker corps. Looking at the Three Rivers League and the eight-man district, Houk sees things wide open. In the league, the Wildcats have to contend with Crest High’s Kyle Hammond and Jordan Morton leading the Lancer offense, then St. Paul has a good pair of players returning. Marmaton Valley picked up Randolph-Blue Valley High as an opponent late after Altoona-Midway High announced it would not field a varsity football team this sea-

son. That game is Sept. 14 at Moran and is the last of three home games to open the season for the Wildcats. In Eight-Man I, District 2 play, the Wildcats find a new but familiar foe. Uniontown High’s Eagles — Marmaton Valley’s arch rival in the
TRL — dropped from 11-man football into eight-man competition this season. Also in the district are Pleasanton, Marais Des Cygnes Valley and St. Paul. Marmaton Valley hosted Chetopa Thursday as the season opener.

Fillies’ numbers up on tennis court Not much has changed for Iola High’s girls on the tennis courts for 2012. Most of the players are returning from last year and the move into the new league hasn’t affected the Fillies’ schedule much. The Pioneer League schools — Anderson County, Prairie View, Wellsville and Osawatomie — don’t have tennis teams. So Iola will play its same schedule against Southeast Kansas League teams although it will lose an allday tournament — the SEK League event — at the end of the regular season. “We’ve had only five or six practices and our season begins. ing the Fillies. They have varsity experience playing singles and doubles. “Katana improved so much from her sophomore year to her junior year. Her strokes are solid and she played singles last year. Abbey is working on honing some fundamentals. Both of these girls can play singles but I could pair them up with a couple of others and we might have two strong doubles teams,” Bycroft said. There’s the rub. Bycroft said she hasn’t really been able to see where the players are their best. She was looking forward to the Fillies’ first varsity action last Thursday to get an indication in which way she needs to go. Iola played a junior varsity quadrangular last Monday to open the season. Bycroft was pleased with what she saw from her younger players. Juniors Alexis Hobbs, Megan Smith and Katie Lieurance played last year. Bycroft said Hobbs played junior varsity a year ago and has come back with a lot of upper body strength and improvement in her game. “Megan and Katie have potential. I’d like to see them get more serious about the game and push themselves to

Most don’t charge the net yet so it’s about moving their feet to get in the proper position,” Bycroft said. Iola has its lone home competition Thursday with Parsons, Independence and Columbus coming to town.

K.B.Criss takes coaching helm at HHS Welcome back Mr. Criss. K.B. Criss, USD 258 superintendent of schools, is back as head coach of Humboldt High’s Cubs for the 2012 football season. Criss, who stepped away from coaching after the 2005 season to become HHS principal, returned to coaching a year ago as a Cub assistant. Mike Miller, who had been the head coach the past couple of years, moved into an assistant coaching position. The Cubs went 2-7 a year ago and 1-4 in Tri-Valley League play. Another change for the Cubs is they’ve moved up from Kansas Class 2-1A district play to Kansas Class 3A.

They were placed in Class 3A, District 6 with Burlington, Eureka and Fredonia — all TVL teams. “It’s a four-team race as we look at it. It is a very balanced district. The two teams that can stay away from injuries will have the inside shot at being the most successful,” Criss said. Humboldt returns 13 lettermen who were starters or had plenty of varsity playing time last year. Five other lettermen are expected to contribute on both sides of the football. Nathan Whitcomb is a 6-1, 160-pound senior quarterback and defensive back. Hayden Boring earned All-Tri-Valley League first team honors as a place kicker. The 6-foot, 165-pound senior returns as a running back and linebacker. Other running back options for the Cubs are senior Trey Johnson and sophomore Jacob Carpenter, both are 6-2 and 185 pounds. They will be seen at linebacker spots defensively for the Cubs. The receiver corps has 6-6, 225-pound senior Noah Thornbrugh, 6-2, 165-pound senior Tanner McNutt, 5-9, 160-pound junior Hunter Murrow and 5-10, 165-pound junior
Alex Murrow. Working at tight end are 6-foot, 180-pound senior Blake Crawford and 6-2, 165-pound sophomore Justin Meins. In the trenches offensively look for Ryan Gean (6-2, 225), senior Dustin Pracht (6-foot, 215), junior Zach Osborn (6-foot, 180) and junior Jayce Shoemaker (6-foot, 170). Vying for playing time along the line are 6-foot, 225-pound senior Robert Moore and 5-11, 190-pound sophomore Ty Yowell. Robbie Sellman is a sophomore who is tagged as a fullback at 5-10 and 145 pounds. Kason Siemens (5-7, 130) is the backup quarterback. “With a significant amount of returning lettermen and larger numbers overall, I feel we will be an exciting team that plays hard and will be fun to watch,” Criss said. “It’s about staying away from injuries and staying focused on the process.” Miller is coaching the offensive passing game and working with the quarterbacks plus the linebackers on defense. IHS harriers run same paths in new league New league, same schedule. Well, almost, the same schedule. Iola High’s cross country teams are competing in the same regular season competitions in 2012 that they have for years. The one change is no Southeast Kansas League meet before the regional cross country meet. The Mustangs and Fillies are now ready to establish a tradition on the Pioneer League meet course, wherever that might be. Iola’s cross country teams challenge Anderson County, Prairie View, Wellsville, Central Heights and Osawatomie in the Pioneer League. Longtime head coach Marvin Smith retired as a full-time teacher but is still coaching the cross country and track teams in 2012. He is joined by Mary Heffern, who has been his assistant coach for seven years now. “I’m not sure if our cup is half full or half empty for the
boys’ team. Yes, I do, it is definitely half full,” Smith said. Iola lost three strong varsity runners to graduation but is returning three juniors to lead a strong, younger team. Juniors Trent Latta, Jeremy Spears and Tyler Powelson placed in the top 13 at the SEK meet last year. The next week Latta and Powelson earned trips to the Kansas Class 4A state meet. Spears missed qualifying for state by one position. Latta and Spears earned All-SEK honors and Powelson was a league honorable mention. At the state cross country meet, Latta finished 37th and Powelson was 69th in the 5K race. The Mustangs’ top senior runner back is Jordan Strickler, who was 24th in the SEK league meet. Strickler was hampered most of last season with a stress fracture. “We need Jordan healthy throughout this season. Trent, Jeremy and Tyler are in their third year running
varsity for us. They all three had strong track seasons last year,” Smith said. “Jeremy has been our lead runner in practice sessions. “We’re getting good practices from our returning junior varsity runners and keeping Jordan with two good legs are the keys to our season.” Coming off a league title in the junior varsity boys’ race, the Mustangs have eight of that group back and pushing for varsity spots. Sophomores Michael Wilson, Blaine Klubek and Kohl Endicott lead that group. Juniors Bryan Mueller and Jacob Cooper, senior Jason Tidd, sophomore Travis Hermstein and junior Levi Baker also placed in the top 20 in the league’s junior varsity race. “All of that group plus Gerardo Rojas, who is a senior runner with asthma and allergy problems but continues to compete, will compete as varsity this season,”
Smith said. The over-flow from the varsity group will make up a competitive junior varsity team, according to Smith. Seniors Drew Smith, Jason Tidd and Kaleb Beckman are in that group along with junior Arion Kunkler, sophomores Tyler Holloway, Jonathan Tidd and first-year sophomore Garrett Prall. “My cup is overflowing with the addition of 10 freshman boys. They attended summer conditioning on a regular basis and are adapting to long distance running,” Smith said. “However, six of this group did not run track in the spring and must be patient with conditioning.” THE FILLIES’ cup is not as full. Iola has six girls out for cross country this season — three returners and three first-year runners. “We’re not looking for teams scores with the girls. We’re looking for individual
improvement as the season progresses,” Smith said. Sophomore Jo Lohman was the Fillies’ No. 2 runner last year, garnering AllSEK recognition with a 19th place finish. Shannon Vogel, a junior ran in the varsity league race last year after competing in the junior varsity meets during the season. Defensive play is linchpin for Lancers Expectations are always high for Crest High Lancer football. The 2012 season is no different. Following its first losing season since 2007, Crest is ready to have a bounce-back year. The Lancers have five starters back on the offensive side of the football and six defensively on their 23man roster. “We’ve seen the guys work hard in the off-season both in the weightroom and on their football skills,” said Brent Smith, who begins his ninth season at the helm of the Lancer program. Craig Frazell moves into the assistant coaching job with Smith after coaching the Crest Middle School football team for years. Defense is key for the Lancers this season. “We gave up way too many points last year, which is uncharacteristic of Lancer teams. Defense is something our team is known for and we’re looking to make a statement with it this season,” Smith said. The Lancers competed in Kansas Eight-Man Division I district action and have moved into the Eight-Man Division II, District 3 competition this year. They are joined by Southern Coffey
County, Chetopa, Elk Valley and Waverly. Altoona-Midway, a member of district and Three Rivers League, is unable to field a varsity football team this season. Replacing the Jets on the Lancer schedule will be Tyro Christian on Oct. 25. The Lancers have five twoway starters back. Senior quarterback Kyle Hammond rushed for 1,366 yards and 22 touchdowns plus was 40 of 68 for 820 yards and 14 touchdowns. Hammond earned All-Three Rivers League honors as a running back
plus on defense and special teams. The 6-1, 195-pound senior garnered state honors as a running back. Jordan Morton, a 5-10, 155-pound senior, hauled in 23 passes for 608 yards as the Lancers’ all-state honorable mention receiver. He scored 10 touchdowns. Morton earned all-league honors as a defensive back. Senior Jesse Boone is in his third year as a starting offensive lineman. The 6-2, 180-pounder was recognized as a defensive lineman in the TRL and was given all-state honorable mention. Joining Boone on the offensive line as a returning starter is 5-10, 165-pound junior Clayton Miller. Junior Brock Ellis, who broke his ankle in the second game of the season last year, is back as a 6-3, 195-pound tight end. Hammond was the team’s leading tackler with 91 stops from his linebacker spot. Ellis will see action at linebacker while Boone is back as defensive end. Boone had 72 tackles, 14 were for losses plus he record four fumbles. Miller racked up 51 tackles as a defensive lineman and Morton had 48 tackles and four interceptions as defensive back. We have the ability to pass and run the ball, keeping defenses on their toes,” Smith said. Nine of the 14 seniors on the roster are returners. “We’ve seen our seniors step into leadership roles. We have a lot of juniors and some sophomores who started or saw a lot of varsity playing time last year,” Kerr said. Leading the way are seniors Mason Coons, Eli Grover, Stephen McDonald, Aaron Barclay, Eric Heffern, Tyler Clubine, Cole Morrison and Zeph Larney. Also back are seniors Devin Burton and Andrew McMurray. Joining their classmates on the team are Joe Myrick, Jacob Harrison and Justin Baker. Coons earned SEK honorable mention. The 6-2, 190-pound senior returns as the Mustang starting quarterback. He threw for 1,088 yards last year, completing 95 of 179 passes. He had seven touchdown passes and
couple of years. Harrison, a first-year senior, and junior Cody Conner are in the rotation at receiver. Kerr said they are developing backup offensive linemen. Colborn leads that group along with freshmen Ethan Sigg and Jesse Gibson. He said freshmen Keenan Badders and Brice Aiello are developing well for backups in the backfield and tight end spots.

has been looking good running the single-wing for us. He is the every-down quarterback this year,” Kerr said. Grover and Barclay, whose season was cut short by a knee injury, return to the offensive line. Grover is a 6-0, 230-pound tackle and Barclay is a 6 feet, 265-pound guard. Joining the two seniors on the offensive line is 5-10, 260-pound sophomore Trey Colborn, who saw varsity playing time. “We’re running an unbalanced offensive line. It gives us an advantage because most teams run balanced lines and it’s something new to defend,” Kerr said. “It gives us a strong side and a quick side.” Kerr pointed to junior Quinton Morrison, 5-10 and 190, as the Mustang’s center this year. Derrick Weir moves to the offensive line as a 5-10, 210-pound junior guard along with Alex Bauer, 5-10 and 190, at tackle. At tight end, junior Bryce Misenhelter is a 6-1, 185-pound returner. Rotating in at that spot will be McDonald, 6-2 and 205. In the backfield look for
Heffern as the fullback, junior Adam Kauth as the wing back and junior Jacob Rhoads as the halfback. Rhoads saw playing duty offensively last year as a receiver and running back. “We have good depth at halfback with Jacob, John Whitworth and Kaden Macha. They all are different types of runners and give us different looks. Jacob can catch the ball well while John is our purest running back type. Kaden is the power back,” Kerr said. “Adam has moved from quarterback to wing back and is getting comfortable in the role. He runs the ball and he’ll do some throwing out of his position. In the singlewing, the fullback is not your typical big blocking back. Eric moves around a lot and is doing a good job.” Junior Tyler McIntosh is the backup quarterback with Clubine backing up Heffern at fullback and junior Jesse Zimmerman is the backup wing back. At the receiver spot, Larney and Morrison return on the offense. Both have seen varsity action in the past
DEFENSIVELY, the Mustangs have their two starting inside linebackers back although only one played the full season a year ago. McDonald suffered a seasonending knee injury in the season opener. The senior is back full force to anchor the defense. As a sophomore, McDonald recorded 19 solo tackles and 42 assisted tackles. He forced two fumbles and recovered three fumbles. Macha turned in a strong freshman season as a starting linebacker. The sophomore had 21 assisted tackles and 13 solo stops last year and recovered a fumble. Heffern is the other inside linebacker. Weir had 15 assisted tackles and 13 solo tackles a year ago. Clubine and sophomore Shane Walden are backup linebackers. Up front on the defensive line is Colborn as noseguard. Misenhelter has solidified a spot at defensive end while Bauer, junior Eric Maxwell and Burton are in the rotation at the other defensive end spot. “Our defensive line’s role is to demand double teams to clear the way for the middle linebackers to get to the ball. In the 36 defense, we have an extra safety who plays like another linebacker,” Kerr said. Rhoads is a returning starter on defense, racking up 12 assisted tackles and 13 unassisted tackles. Area high school volleyball teams hit the courts for 2012 Coaches got a good look at their volleyball teams over the weekend as three of the five area high school squads opened the 2012 season. Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcats and the Crest High Lady Lancers, both with new coaches, competed in the Three Rivers League tournament Saturday at Arma. Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs took the court in a tournament hosted by Prairie View High in LaCygne. Yates Center High’s Wildcats open their season tonight at home. Southern Coffey County High’s Lady Titans get on the court Thursday. Humboldt High School Lady Cubs No seniors are on the Humboldt High volleyball team this year. No problem. The Lady Cubs have plenty of varsity experience in five juniors and two sophomores. Under the leadership of fourth-year head coach Stephanie Splechter and new assistant coach Cara Thomas, the young Lady Cubs are ready to forge upward. Humboldt posted a 14-19 season record last year, which had six more match victories than the previous season. “We’re going the right direction. This group is scrappy and aggressive defensively. We’re trying to fill some vacancies on the varsity left by graduation,” Splechter said. “We’re strong in the middle blocker position.” Junior Sheri Middleton is the leading returner for the Lady Cubs. The 6-2 middle hitter/blocker earned AllTri-Valley League honors last year. Kayle Riebel is a 5-9 junior helping patrol the middle of the net. Humboldt also returns its two setters in juniors Anna Setter and Morgan Morris. The top outside hitter returning for the Lady Cubs is 5-8 sophomore Breanna Kline who along
with Middleton hit with power at the net. Junior Haley Riebel is another outside hitter. Sophomore Delaney Umholtz is a defensive specialist, playing the back for the Lady Cubs. Sophomore Rachel Taylor and freshman Megan Hudlin could come off the bench to see varsity playing time. Other sophomores on the Humboldt team are Kasey Beeman, Cheyenne English, Chelsea Bailey, Wynnter Snyder, Jaci Ross, Miranda Albert and Brittany Smith. Along with Hudlin, the Lady Cubs’ freshmen are Briana Ames, Hannah Hulett, Haylie Yost and Briana Yokum. Yates Center High School Wildcats Yates Center High’s Wildcats have four starters back off their 2011 16-19 team. Wildcat head coach Carrie Cummings is in her third year, after seven years coaching at Yates Center Middle School. Senior outside hitter Addie Hughes, who is 5-7, led the team in kills and service aces garnering AllTri-Valley League honors. Working the middle of the net for are junior blockers Bailie Chambers and Lindsey Moyer. At 6-feet, Chambers led the Wildcats in blocks last year. Moyer is a 5-6 middle blocker and right-side hitter. Putting the net attacks in motion is senior setter Paige Steinforth, who led the team in set assists a year ago. Returning letter winners are Kendra Leach, a 5-9 junior middle blocker and outside hitter; Mindi Holloway, a 5-6 junior outside hitter; Aubrey Smith, a 5-5 sophomore outside hitter; and sophomore setters Rylie Albert and Shayna Karmann. Freshmen on the team are Makayla Jones, Ashley Pringle, Jessica Rossillon, Brooke King and Raylee Waddell. Meghann Moss is Cummings’ new assistant coach.
Southern Coffey County High Lady Titans Southern Coffey County High’s Lady Titans have three starters back on the court and five others expected to step up this year. To improve on last year’s 16-17 overall mark, second-year head coach Jeff True looks for the Lady Titans to be competitive. “It’s an excellent group of young ladies who work hard to improve each day. Sarah Webb and Bre Isch give us strong hitting and Martyna Hegwald is a veteran setter,” True said of the team’s returning starters. Webb is a 5-11 senior outside hitter and setter. She put down 191 kills and made 36 blocks at the net for the Lady Titans last year. Webb was a 96 percent server. Breanna Isch is a 6-foot junior outside/middle hitter with 110 kills and 49 blocks under her belt from a year ago. Hegwald, a 5-7 senior, was credited with 129 set assists last year. Junior Chenae Newkirk is a libero, playing the back row and serving. Amanda Sherwood is a junior defensive specialist. Adding depth at the hitter spots are seniors Chelsea Snovell and Myranda Hegwald and junior Miranda Alumbaugh. The Lady Titans play in the tough Lyon County League. Eric Busteed comes to Yates Center High after being the head coach at Altoona-Midway High for one year. The Jets went 2-8 in eight-man football last year. Busteed had been the Jets’ head track and basketball coach for four years. “I’m very optimistic about our season. We have solid players in every position and good numbers out,” Busteed said of his new team. The Wildcats are working to turn their program around and chalk up a few more victories. Busteed has Rex McVey as his assistant coach. McVey is a longtime coach and teacher in the Yates Center district. “We play a very tough schedule but I feel we are going to compete every week. We’re still a very young team,” Busteed said. The Wildcats have four seniors on their 22-man roster in 2012. Three of those seniors are returning lettermen for the Cats. All are offensive linemen — 6-foot, 270-pound Garrison Hall, 5-4, 150-pound Alex Waddell and 5-7,
145-pound Kevin Morey. Junior Robert Arnold is back at tight end at 6-1 and 200 pounds. Battling for starting roles along the line are 6-foot, 270-pound sophomore Justin Bishop, 5-10, 175-pound sophomore Drew Pringle and 5-10, 240-pound freshman Drey Estes. Young Titans back on gridiron for SCCH Young but battle-tested are the 2012 Southern Coffey County High Titans. A year ago the Titans had 11 upperclassmen. Injuries thinned the ranks leaving the younger Titans to step in and play football. “Injuries and low numbers in our senior and junior classes last year pushed our young kids into considerable playing time. Our record didn’t indicate it, but the kids made progress throughout the season,” said secondyear Titan head coach Korey Lankton. The Titans have 21 out with four seniors on the squad, all returning lettermen and three as starters. Southern Coffey County posted a 3-6 overall record and went 1-5 for sixth in the Lyon County League in 2011. “Our guys have made gains in the off-season and worked well in early preseason practices. We’re still a little short on upperclassman numbers but I think the sophomores will make some gains off of last year’s experience,” Lankton said. Turner Anderson is a 5-9, 220-pound senior running back who earned secondteam Grasslands Area honors last year. Charlie Patterson, a 5-9, 160-pound senior, got playing time in the backfield and is projected as a starting running back. Senior Colton Toy and junior Chism Newkirk are working at quarterback. Toy is 5-9 and 135 pounds
and Newkirk is 5-8 and 130 pounds. Up front in the offensive trenches will be honorable mention Grasslands selection Luke Kraft, a 5-10, 230-pound senior. Also back are junior Zach Loveall, 5-9 and 200, and sophomore Walker Harred, 5-10 and 230. Sophomore Josiah Witteman is back as tight end at 6-1 and 160 pounds. Sophomores Brier Johnson, 5-9 and 135, and Jordan Edwards, 6-3 and 260, are vying for offensive line spots. Tyler Houston, a 6-2, 160-pound junior, is in the mix at tight end. “If the kids can continue to improve on fundamentals, we can use some of our size to our advantage,” Lankton said. “It’s important to us to improve on discipline as well. We cannot afford to
turn the ball over and need to minimize our penalties.” Lankton said competition for starting spots on defense is wide open. Harred is back as linebacker after receiving second team Lyon County League honors. He is joined by Witteman at linebacker. Kraft was one of the Titans’ starting defensive ends a year ago. Newkirk and Patterson saw action ad defensive backs. Lankton said he expects Zach Roush, Loveall, Toy, Johnson, Houston and Michael Hill to battle for playing time. “We know some teams on our schedule throw the ball well so we have to make strides overall defensively but even more so in pass defense,” Lankton said. “Our success relies quite a bit on controlling the ball and improving our overall defense.”

Looking at the Lyon County League, Madison and Lebo are always strong but Marais Des Cygnes Valley and Waverly have key players back. Lankton said Burlingame may have the best quarterback in Parker Lee. The Titans are in the Kansas Eight-Man Division II District 3 with Crest, Chetopa, Waverly and Elk Valley. Altoona-Midway was also in the district but is not fielding a varsity team this season. “I believe we can compete for a playoff spot. Waverly, Chetopa and Crest all return some dangerous ball players. We just have to go out each game and play solid football,” Lankton said.
Southern Coffey County picked up Baileyville B&B as an opponent when AltoonaMidway dropped out of the picture. That game is Oct. 12 at Le Roy. The Titans go to LCL foe Burlingame Friday to begin the season. Yates Center, Crest back up and running Marmaton Valley, Humboldt have strong runners back for 2012
Twenty-nine area athletes are priming themselves for the high school cross country season. Humboldt High’s Cubs and Lady Cubs combine for 13 competitors. Yates Center High’s Wildcats are back after a year away from the sport. Marmaton Valley High has five runners set for the new season and Crest High has a new coach and six runners. The Cubs have two returning runners in senior Nick Keazer and junior Jimmy Mangold. Keazer earned All-Tri-Valley League honors. Others on the Humboldt boys’ squad are senior Jud Hawley, junior Layne Gonzalez, sophomores Ethan Bartlett and Andrew Keazer and freshmen Dillon Aikins, Ronny Jarred, Bryce Isaac and Tanner Orth. Kristin Todd, a returning senior, leads the Lady Cubs. Brooke Boatwright is another senior on the squad and junior Kolbyn Allen. “We have a large group of kids for our size school with 13 high schoolers and nine middle schoolers. That’s exciting to have such a big group out for middle school competition,” said
Eric Carlson, Humboldt cross country coach. Last year Paydne Durand and John Hull ran as seventh-graders. Those two are joined by eighth-grader Jules Jones along with Sarah Todd, Josh Vanatta, Wyatt Suefert, Scott Todd, Brady Slocum and Brooklyn Kuhn of the HMS seventh grade. “Our kids are working hard and striving to prepare themselves for the upcoming season. Having the large group out is a strength, but we’re inexperienced,” Carlson said. Humboldt and Yates Center compete in the Tri-Valley League meet late in the season. A year ago, Yates Center’s cross country program was suspended for lack of numbers. In 2012, it has five boys and one girl out. “It’s good to be able to offer the sport again. Sam Aguirre is back. He ran as a freshman and sophomore. He is our only experienced runner on the team,” said Kevin Barnes, YCHS cross country coach. Aguirre played football last year and Barnes was an assistant football coach. Now, things are right with the world again for these two with the Wildcats’ cross country team back in force. Barnes has coached cross country at YCHS for 13 years. Ceaton Cooper, another senior, came to Yates Center after school started last year. Cooper had a strong track season for the Wildcats in the spring. Barnes said Cooper ran cross country at his previous school. Drake Busteed moved into Yates Center from Altoona-Midway after his father came to the district as a teacher and football coach. Busteed ran track as a freshman at AltoonaMidway and shows promise in the fall sport. Brett Holloway and Tyler Keenan are freshmen who ran track in middle school. Barnes said Holloway had an outstanding track season as an eighth-grader. Keenan ran sprints and hurdles in middle school. The lone girl is freshman Sabrena Ariel. She ran the two-mile race in middle school and “loves running long distance.” “Several really did a lot of condition running over the summer and I’m pleased with all of their progress this early,” Barnes said. Marmaton Valley High has three returning runners and one who came back into the sport after a year away. Ashtynn Louk is the only girl

on the team and the junior is ready for a strong third year running. She ran sixth in the varsity girls’ 4K race at the Three Rivers League meet a year ago. Chance Stevenson and Garrett Booth, both juniors, are the experienced runners for the Wildcat boys. Stevenson finished third in the Three Rivers League varsity race and Booth was 12th. Marcus Miller, a senior, didn’t run last year but did compete in cross country as a sophomore. Mark Wagner is a freshman runner for the Wildcats. “We might have a few more come out after school starts. Several have voiced an interest in competing this year but we’ll see,” said sixth-year head coach Stephen Smith. “Those out worked through our summer running program.” Smith said the goals of the MVHS Wildcat runners are to work hard each day and improve over last year. Chris Dvorak brings the strength of running cross country and track at the high school and college level to Crest High’s program. Dvorak, who ran for DeSoto High School and Emporia State for four years, is the new Lancer cross country coach. “Key to any program is to make sure the athletes enjoy the sport. I want our kids to have a good experience and see improvement in their times as we move through the season,” Dvorak said. Sophomores Brooklyn Gray LaCross and Madison Kellar are the only girls out at Crest. Both are returning from last year.

Mike Armstrong ran for Iola High the past two seasons and brings plenty of experience. “Those four runners have been working well in practices. I expect them to have strong seasons. We have two freshmen — Kaden Strickler and Dal Lacey — who are new to the sport. We also have Nate Berry, an eighth-grader, running with us,” Dvorak said. Humboldt opens the season at Anderson County High Invitational in Garnett Thursday. Marmaton Valley, Crest and Yates Center begin the season Thursday at a meet in Burlington.

Defensively, McNett, Rossillon and Arnold are back as linebackers while Waddell and Hall shore up the line. Also expected to be in the defensive trenches are Hunsperger, Bishop, Pingle and Estes. DeNoon is a linebacker defensively. Morey returns to the defensive backfield. Anthony Keenan, a senior, is a defensive back, as is Ratcliff. Yates Center is a Tri-Valley League member but no other league team plays eight-man football. The Wildcats are in a tough Kan-
sas Eight-Man I district with Marmaton Valley, Marais Des Cygnes Valley, St. Paul, Pleasanton and Uniontown. Marmaton Valley is coming off a deep run into the playoffs and Uniontown dropped down from Class 3A competition. “Marmaton Valley is going to be very solid and MDCV has good athletes. Uniontown is going to be good because of size and numbers,” said Busteed. “St. Paul will be wellcoached and ready to play and Pleasanton has been very good in the past.” Busteed is pushing his players to be competitive and expects it each Friday night. The Wildcats open the season at home against Sedan Friday.

Lohman, Vogel and Courtney Smith, who ran junior varsity for Iola a year ago, are the Fillies returners. The newcomers are freshmen Abigail Taylor and Klair Vogel and senior Stephanie Blake. “We ran Jo in the 400 and 800 races during track season in the spring to get some speed in to her workouts. She did very well,” Smith said. “Abigail has been amazing in practice even though it did not come as a surprise. I watched her in middle school races and she ran three distance races in each meet, winning most of them including the 3200-meter race.” Smith said Taylor logged a lot of miles, even in the extreme heat this summer. Smith has pegged Lohman and Taylor to run in varsity races throughout the season while the others run in junior varsity races. He said Klair Vogel ran sprints in middle school and Blake is a first-year senior. LOOKING AT the Pioneer League meet, Smith likes the
Mustangs’ chances of winning the league title. He said Wellsville, Osawatomie and Anderson County are the frontrunners as teams along with Iola. For the girls, Anderson County is the reigning league champion with five of their six runners back.
Smith said most of the Pioneer League schools have middle school cross country programs. Iola freshman Colby Works ran in eighthgrade races last fall at meets with the IHS teams. This year Iola will have Megan Klubek, Braden Plumlee and Kendall Jay competing in middle school races at meets where offered. As usual, Iola opens the cross country season Thursday at Anderson County High Invitational in Garnett. The Pioneer League meet is Oct. 11 at Wellsville. THE IOLA HIGH Doc Stiles Invitational is changing venues this season. The Doc Stiles Invitational is Tuesday, Sept. 18 and will be held on the campus of Allen Community College instead of Riverside Park. “The city has done a lot of work in the park and it dumped the dirt it cleared out of areas right on our starting area. It’s pretty rough right now so we decided to move the meet to the college campus,” Smith said.
