Our Purpose: ‘Keeping The Arts Alive’ My first experience at the Bowlus Fine Arts Center was as a child watching the Iola High School production of “Winnie the Pooh.” That very first exposure, my very first opportunity to watch a live performance, has affected my entire life. Today, almost 50 years later, our children have a multitude of opportunities to participate in art, drama, music programs and more through the Bowlus. These programs are provided with little or no expense because of the underwriting by private trusts such as the Sleeper Family Trust and the Whitehead Trust. This year alone the Sleeper

Susan Raines Bowlus Center Executive Director Family Trust will provide nearly $100,000 in funding to support arts programming for area students. Trusts bequeathed by generous donors also provide funds to pay for the Storytellerin-Residence that visits every elementary classroom in Allen County schools, the Allen County Young Authors’ Celebration, the Iola Reads One Book, One Community event

and the Family Reading Festival hosted by the Iola Public Library. And this year for the first time, funds for fine arts programming for SAFE BASE — USD 257’s after-school program — will be provided. Each summer numerous programs are held in the Bowlus in art, drama, and the heritage arts for area children. The classes are reasonably priced, again because of generous donations. For the past several summers the Missoula Children’s Theatre has come to Iola. The group travels all over the United States working with local children to produce a musical

in just one week’s time. Missoula staff shared with us how amazing it is that we do not charge our participants. In other communities the average cost for a child to participate in their program is $125 to $185 per student with ticket sales running $10 to $15 per person. Our children participate in the week long camp for no fee and the tickets prices to see the show were $3 for adults and $2 for children with those under five year attending for free. Finally, the Sleeper Trust provides funds to be used by fine arts teachers at Allen Community College and Iola High School to bring artists-inresidence, clinicians and work-

shops directly to their classrooms to help supplement their subject matter. I have not heard of any school district whose fine arts teachers have this type of support year after year. The Bowlus Fine Arts Center plays a significant role in how Allen County schools can provide outstanding fine arts opportunities for their students beyond the classroom curriculum. What a gift Mr. Bowlus, Mr. Sleeper and Mrs. Whitehead have given to our community and our children. I can only imagine how our children’s lives may be impacted by what they see, hear, and learn at the Bowlus.

Tom Bowlus “I have always been dedicated to the proposition that the best tool with which to equip our youth to confront the future is an education, and that such education should include an appreciation of things artistic, musical and cultural as well as things academic and scientific. It is to that end and for such purposes that I dedicate the aforedescribed premises.” — Thomas H. Bowlus

(The Center) shall be one of which our citizens, but particularly our youth, may be proud. The purpose is to further the education of our youth.

Thomas H. Bowlus (1874-1960)

My aim is to provide students and citizens cultural facilities, programs and entertainment perhaps not otherwise available.

The Staff: Many Talents Make Fast Work By SUSAN RAINES Bowlus director Working in a fine arts center with a theater and an education wing is a demanding job, and definitely not a 9 to 5 position. Though the hours may be long, the job is personally rewarding. The Bowlus Fine Arts Center staff gets to watch and listen as the children of our community are provided the opportunity to discover the arts and the role they can play in their lives. We hear music every day of the week, get to see works of art created and watch drama students practicing and finally performing their scenes and plays. We are allowed to work for the Bowlus Trust that provides a venue for the community to take part in the fine arts through college music and drama performances, the symphony orchestra, the community theatre, and host high-caliber professional performers and speakers. It may be hard for outsiders to fathom that we have maintained this in a town of less than 6,000 for 48 years. I was recently asked what it took to work at the Bowlus. I found this an interesting question; one worth sharing. First and foremost, the Bowlus staff must believe in our mission: “making available to the citizens of the area cultural facilities, programs and entertainment perhaps not otherwise available.” Second, we must have the desire to help all, whether presenters or attendees who walk through our doors. Finally, we must have the desire to share our creative talents in whatever our job may be at the Bowlus with our community. JUDY COCHRAN holds an associate of science degree with an emphasis in business administration. She began serving as the Bowlus volunteer coordinator in 2005 after serving as a volunteer for more years than I can remember. She has played an active role in many organizations affiliated

Judy also serves as our marketing assistant to Candace McRae and keeps our website and Facebook page up to date. Judy took fine arts classes at the Bowlus in high school in the late 1960s before graduating in 1970. She and her husband, Bruce, have three children and four grandchildren who have taken advantage of Bowlus cultural and educational events while enrolled in USD 257 schools.

technology light board, replacing all of the stage curtains, helping design and build the new light and sound booth at the rear of the auditorium, and overseeing the installation of an entirely new auditorium sound system. “The show must go on!” is a term that applies to Jeff and his work at the Bowlus. In his time away from the Bowlus, Jeff and Rhi are raising their two children, River, 9 and Piper, 1. River can be seen in the upcoming production of “Willy Wonka, Jr.” presented by the Iola Community Theatre.

JEFF JORDAN, facility manager and technical director, has a degree in graphic design and worked five years at Memorial Auditorium in Pittsburg as an assistant technical director before joining the Bowlus staff in 2006. During Jeff’s time, he has overseen the installation of a new rigging system, the refinishing of the stage floor, purchasing new lighting instruments and a new advanced

TRACI PLUMLEE joined the Bowlus staff a short year ago and has already vital team member. Traci holds a bachelor of arts in economics and business administration and is our box office manager and bookkeeper. Though any of the office staff are happy to accept your ticket orders, Traci is the one in charge. In the summer Traci directs the Heritage Arts program, where children of all

ages get an opportunity to discover art forms popular several generations ago. Traci and husband Brian have three children, Braden, Bret and Josie. CANDACE MCRAE is the Bowlus marketing director and assistant projects director, joining the Bowlus staff in January 2011. Candace is the creative genius behind our logo and all of the graphic art work that we use to promote the many Bowlus series events, including our season brochure. She is also responsible for our advertising in all genres – newspaper, radio, Facebook, web, programs, posters, flyers, postcards and more. As you might guess, this keeps Candace extremely busy. but she still has time to enjoy her family, husband J.D. and their 7-month-old daughter, Ella. DAN STOTLER has worked at the Bowlus Center for almost 20 years as our daytime maintenance man. It is no surprise that Dan is a wizard at keeping

our 48-year-old building and its equipment looking and running like new. Dan worked at Agri Farm & Home for 16 years and for two years with USD 257 in maintenance prior to joining the Bowlus Center staff. Dan is one of our building’s strongest assets. His experience and knowledge from past employment as well as his years maintaining his own farm equipment has made him the perfect fit for the Bowlus. Dan and his wife Uanna have two children, Janna and Dan, and one granddaughter, Baliegh, who have all attended school in Iola and participated in Bowlus classes and activities. RON HIGGINBOTHAM joined the Bowlus maintenance staff in May 2011. In his early years after graduation, Ronnie worked as a maintenance man for one of the USD 257 elementary schools and later at Home Detail for 20 years as a master carpenter. The Bowlus has already taken advantage of Ron’s carpentry skills, as you will note in a photo included in this tab about the new light and sound booth that was one of our improvement projects this summer. We are thrilled to have Ron’s talents and skill on the Bowlus staff. Ron and his wife, Debbie, have two children, Melissa and John, who both attended numerous classes in the Bowlus while in middle and high school. Melissa has worked a few of our cultural attraction series events, and John is a regular at several events a year.

Owen Morse and Jon Wee are one of the most successful and sought-after comedy acts working today. The two met in 1986 at a juggling convention and instantly knew they were destined to be a team. But they decided to graduate from college first. Which they both did. Rather than pursue careers in economics and psychology, they lit some torches and started throwing stuff into the air. And things clicked. Two weeks after their first performance they won the silver medal at the International Jugglers’ Association Teams Competition. The next year they won the gold. That recognition earned an invitation to appear at the renowned Comedy and Magic Club in Los Angeles, where on their first night they were approached by the “Tonight Show” talent scout and booked for their first national televi-

sion appearance in September 1990. Their first feature film followed, “The Addams Family Movie,” where Jon and Owen doubled for Gomez (Raul Julia) and Uncle Fester (Christopher Lloyd) in the climactic Mamushka dagger-passing scene. More recently, they appeared in the award-winning comedy documentary, “The Aristocrats.”

The Passing Zone’s act is clean and appeals to all ages and walks of life.

Learn about Kansas’ 8 Wonders The 8 Wonders of Kansas contests were a project of the Kansas Sampler Foundation that took place 2007-2010. The contests were so popular that organizers published the “8 Wonders of Kansas Guidebook.” The purpose was to educate the public about all there is to see and do in Kansas. The guidebook is an award-winning 272-page book filled with more than 800 beautiful photos of the 216 entries in the 8 Wonders of Kansas contests. Author Marci Penner worked with all 216 entries to compile background information, location, contacts and hours to make this spiral-bound book a handy tool when exploring Kansas. Photographer Harland Schuster and designer Liz (Penner) King collaborated to create a book that perfectly fits the celebratory nature of Kansas in the 21st century. Come hear Penner talk about 7 p.m. her book and how it covers the architecture, art, commerce, cuisine, November 16 customs, geography, history, and people of our wonderful state.

‘Birdhouse Factory’ certain to dazzle “Birdhouse Factory,” presented by Cirque Mechanics, is a nostalgic tale set in a 1930’s Depression era widget factory, transformed by the resourcefulness and creativity of the American worker. The performers went on to tour the United States and Europe inspiring and entertaining audiences and critics. The New York Times found Birdhouse Factory “exceptional, evocative, ... and engrossingly entertaining.” Cirque Mechanics was founded in 2004 by Boston native and German Wheel artist, Chris Lashua, after the success of his collaborative project with the Circus Center of San Francisco, Birdhouse Factory. Cirque Mechanics quickly established itself as a premiere American circus, with its unique approach to performance, inspiring storytelling and innovative mechanical staging. Spectacle Magazine hailed it as “the greatest contribution to the American circus since Cirque du Soleil.” Cirque Mechanics, although inspired by modern circus, finds its roots in the mechanical and its heart in the stories of American ingenuity. The shows, rooted in realism, display a raw quality, rarely found in modern circus, that makes their message timeless and relevant. The stories are wrapped in circus acrobatics, mechanical wonders and a bit of clowning around.

Entertainers Fill the Bowlus With Magic ‘Frindle’ sparks imagination

9:30 a.m and 1:30 p.m. January 29

From Harlem to rural Kansas

Nicholas Allen has plenty of ideas. When he ends up in Mrs. Granger’s language arts class, he has his best idea ever. He decides to create his own word…FRINDLE! Before long Nick’s word creates a buzz in his school, his town and then to his surprise it spreads all around the country, and a power struggle erupts with the strict Mrs. Granger. Will the word “Frindle” win? Based on the multiple award winning novel by Andrew Clements, this quirky, imaginative tale about creative thought and the power of words will have young audiences inventing their own words. The Griffin Theatre Company, established in 1988, is a not-for-profit, professional theatre company in Chicago. Their mission is to create extraordinary and meaningful theatrical experiences for both children and adults by building bridges of understanding between generations that instill an appreciation of the performing arts. Through artistic collaboration the Griffin Theatre Company produces literary adaptations, original work and classic plays that challenge and inspire with wit, style and compassion for the audience.

The Harlem Quartet, praised for its “panache” by The New York Times, is currently the resident ensemble in the New England Conservatory of Music’s Professional String Quartet Program. Its mission is to advance diversity in classical music while engaging young and new audiences through the discovery and presentation of varied repertoire, highlighting works by minority composers. Each member of the Harlem Quartet is a seasoned solo artist, having appeared with the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Pops, and the Atlanta, Baltimore, Cleveland, Detroit, National, New World, and Pittsburgh symphony orchestras. As a quartet, they have performed in many communities 7 p.m. across the country including February 8 Detroit, New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Boston.

Celtic Crossroads: Irish music of today Just when you think that you have seen the best that Irish music has to offer, a fresh new show from Ireland is taking the art form to an entirely new level. Celtic Crossroads presents Irish music like never before, set to do to Irish music what Riverdance has done to Irish dance. The name Celtic Crossroads originates from a time in Ireland when neighboring communities met at the crossroads between towns and villages to socialize – long before the pub tradition began. With a focus on keeping the tradition of Irish music alive, each performer nurtures this bygone concept, but by virtue of their young age and raw talent, they high-kick this tradition into the 21st Century. True highkicking from some of Ireland’s best-respected Irish dancers also intensifies the pulsating rhythms of the show.
