Formal Education

Many people had a strong influence on my personal education, beginning with my mother and my uncle Gilton. I made all my studies in public schools and I am grateful to my school teachers with who I learned to appreciate literature, music, arts and was put in contact with the fascinating world of the knowledge. I am especially grateful to people who taught me to walk with my own legs. I learned to appreciate the theory of thermodynamics and kinetic approach during my MsC formation with professors José Pantuso Sudano and Demétrio Bastos Neto in the National Institute of Spatial Research (INPE). This influence stimulated me to make my Doctoral Thesis in France in this area of knowledge.

Main academic/scientific interests

After my doctoral period, I started to work with building physics, a subject that appeared to me as more appropriate, considering our Brazilian conditions. In this area, I tried to stimulate my students to the development of transducers and measurement methods and started my own work with porous media, using a macroscopic point of view. I am grateful to Prof. Serge Bories of Institut de Mécanique des Fluides de Toulouse (IMFT) who pointed me the great challenge of modelling fluid flow inside the complex microgeometry of a porous medium. This happened during our agreement CNPq-CNRS in 1989-1999 and turned on my attention to the three-dimensional reconstruction of porous media based on 2D thin plate sections of the porous structure. In 1997, I began to work with discrete forms of the Boltzmann equation: the lattice-Boltzmann framework. The correct description of the macroscopic overall patterns related to immiscible flows in porous media requires to understand the dynamics of the interface displacement at the pore scale. In their formation, displacement and breakdown, interfaces are subjected to viscous, surface, gravity and inertial forces and, although, from a qualitative standpoint, we have, presently, a fair knowledge of the main physical mechanisms that affect the displacement of a fluid by another in a porous medium, the numerical description of the interface dynamics in very small cavities is still an open subject carrying out important challenges that remain to overcome. Simulations based on the spatial and temporal discretization of the macroscopic fluid dynamics equations showed to be difficult to be achieved, especially when based on singular interfaces. Indeed, in addition to the geometric complexity of the porous structure, the triple contact line between the phases gives rise to a singularity that requires, in this approach, the use of empirical models based on lubricant films of questionable validity for understanding the complex physical phenomena related to the interaction between the fluids and the solid surface. The same difficulties are found when trying to describe the dynamic processes related to the interface formation and breakdown, including the segregation processes, the coalescence and the bubbling of the invader into the resident phase. In this aspect, the use of the Lattice Boltzmann (LB) method has three main features with respect to classical CFD methods in simulating immiscible flows: a) due to its mesoscopic nature it is able to solve macroscopic problems that require information from the underlying molecular scale; b) it is intrinsically Lagrangian, avoiding to capture the interface at each time step; c) as it is the case for all LB algorithms, it is based on an hyperbolic equation, the field information travelling along characteristic lines and enabling the simulator to avoid the solution of very large systems of algebraic equations, as it happens with numerical schemes based on elliptic equations. I give below a summary of my academic/scientific interests, after 1975. 1997-pres.

Proc. 300709/2013-7. CNPq Research Productivity Funding: Phase transition and immiscible displacement in microchannels and porous media Description: research productivity Project. The objective of this proposal is the theoretical and experimental investigation of the phenomena of phase transition and immiscible displacement in microchannels and porous media, giving continuity to a line of research that has already been in development for about 25 years in Porous Media Laboratory and Thermophysical Properties (LMPT). The numerical simulation of these processes is a theme at the frontier of knowledge, requiring the development of higher-order LB models for the solution of the discretization and the resulting problems of fluid-fluid and fluid-solid interaction processes in microchannels. These developments will have the support of experimental work involving the determination of surface 8

Proc. 500079/2003-0. CNPq Research Productivity Funding: Immiscible displacement in reconstructed porous structures. Application to the physical characterization of reservoir rocks Description: The displacement of one immiscible phase to another in a porous structure is influenced by capillary and viscous forces. This influence is related to the boundary conditions imposed on the flow of both phases, as well as other factors such as the spatial variability of the porous geometry, physical and chemical properties of the phases and the fluid-solid interactions. When analyzing the displacement process in a mesoscopic or microscopic scale (the level of pore), different physical mechanisms can be observed, among which: piston displacement, scroll bubbles, different dynamics of wetting, the rupture of interfaces, coalescence of bubbles and thin film precursors. A detailed analysis of such phenomena can provide a better understanding of the trapping mechanisms that occurs in porous media and result in important information in a macroscopic scale, of great importance for many areas of scientific and technological sectors, specifically for oil industry Researchers: Paulo Cesar Philippi (Head); Celso Peres Fernandes; Luis Orlando Emerich dos Santos; Carlos Roberto Appoloni; Carlos Enrique Pico Ortiz; Rodrigo Surmas; Fabiano Gilberto Wolf; Luiz Adolfo Hegele Junior; Eduardo de Carli da Silva; Diogo Nardeli Siebert; Felipe Reinoldo Schramm; Guilherme Eller Haverroth; Alyson Nunes Diógenes Involved Students: Undergraduate (8); MsC (1); Doctoral (3) Funding: Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico-CNPq

CNPq Research Productivity Funding: Fluid invasion processes in reconstructed porous structures Description: This study aims to determine the physical properties of oil reservoirs from thin sections. Due to its characteristics, the coring process of a well is generally extremely expensive and is performed by specialized companies and demanding stoppage of exploration activities during the operation. The project can be seen from 3 points of view: scientific, technological and institutional. From a scientific point of view, it encompasses the study and understanding of the capacity and the of the involved methods. The result of several Doctoral and Master studies are being used as models and methods for making the calculation algorithms. From the technological point of view it consists in the construction of fluid flow simulation algorithms for fluid flow within the porous microstructure. From the institutional point of view it encompass the techno-scientific cooperation between the CENPES / PETROBRAS, LMPT / UFSC and ESSS. The three institutions are strongly complementary. The LMPT has experience in the use of image analysis techniques, reconstruction of microgeometry and emphasis on knowledge of the phenomena that occur within porous media. The contribution of ESSS is software engineering, developing graphical user interfaces and visualization environments for the applications that will be generated. CENPES has experience in the experimental determination of permeability. Curriculum Vitae: Paulo Cesar Philippi Proc. 462917/00-2. Programa CNPq/CTPETRO: Fluid Flow in Porous Structures: Application to the characterization of reservoir-rocks physics. Description: CNPq Program / CTPETRO Proc. 462 917 / 00-2: Flow of Fluids in Porous Structures: application to the physical characterization of petroleum reservoir rocks. The knowledge of the geological characteristics and the physical properties of an oil reservoir requires the production of samples, taken along the borehole at regular intervals from the surface. These data are the input for simulation models on a large scale, allowing to estimate the volumetric flow rate of oil that can be produced from the reservoir. From the collected testimonies laboratory plugs are made and, also, thin sections for analysis in optical and or electron microscopes. Plugs are used to determine: i) the porosity of the rock; ii) the intrinsic permeability; iii) the capillary pressure characteristics in samples exposed to different concentrations of water or oil in water systems - oil; iv) the relative permeability curves to the oil when it is displaced by the action of water or another fluid with different wettability. The last test is the intrusion of mercury which is a destructive test does not allow the recovery of the plug for other tests. These tests are generally expensive, requiring specialized personnel and some of them, such as the relative permeability, are significantly long. Thus, only a few plugs are subjected to the full battery of tests, which produces the physical data needed to feed the simulation models on a large scale. The microscopic analysis of thin sections has been shown to be a low cost alternative method for the determination of those properties Institutions: Porous Media and Themophysics Laboratory (LMPT/UFSC), CENPES/Petrobras Researchers: Paulo Cesar Philippi (Head); Celso Peres Fernandes; Luis Orlando Emerich dos Santos; Carlos Roberto Appoloni; Rodrigo Surmas; A D Bueno; Luiz Adolfo Hegele Junior Involved Students: Undergraduate (2); MsC (1); Doctoral (1) Funding: Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico-CNPq

13. 1997 ‐ 2001 Project 3473/96: Image processing applied to the morpho-topological characterization of reservoir-rocks. simulation of fluid dynamic invasion processes Description: The oil volume that is possible to be extracted from petroleum reservoira does not exceed, at present, about 30% of the total volume of oil contained in this reservoir (world average). The need to increase these rates together with the complexity of the extraction process is requiring a considerable research effort of researchers and oil companies. This study aims to determine the geophysical properties of the reservoir from petrographic thin sections. The major technological contribution that is expected is to contribute to provide the country with better conditions for international competitiveness in its oil exploration sector, with the reduction in costs that are associated with the extraction process. The knowledge of the geological characteristics and the physical properties of an oil reservoir requires obtaining samples, taken along the borehole at regular intervals from the surface. In fact, besides the oil quality, the first two concerns in the exploration phase consists in estimating the volume of oil in the reservoir and in determining their petrographic properties. These data are the input data for simulation models on a large scale, allowing to estimate the volumetric flow rate of oil that can be produced from the reservoir in the primary and secondary recovery phases. CNPq Research Productivity Funding: Porous media and thermophysical properties of materials Description: The study of porous materials and their thermophysical properties is important in many areas of expertise considering the frequency with which they are found forming boundaries of physical systems and / or as media for substances transfer. Thus, the drying process in materials such as wood and ceramics are controlled by the diffusion of heat and moisture. Likewise, the grain drying processes in the food industry. In agriculture, knowledge of heat and moisture transfer processes in soils is essential for irrigation planning. In the field of petroleum engineering, both efficiency and the rate of oil recovery depend mainly on the microstructure of the reservoir rocks. In this program of activities, the research works were associated with the development of the following areas: i) Fundamental studies in porous media involving the analysis of the influence of microstructure on the retention and fluid transfer processes. ii) Hygrothermal behavior of thermal insulation and buildings materials; iii) Study and development of methods to measure the thermal properties of thermal insulation and construction materials; ii) Development of thin film transducers. Guest Editor with Bastien Chopard (Geneve University) of Journal of Statistical Mechanics. Theory and Experiment: Editor of the Special Issue: Recent Advances in particle methods for fluid dynamics (2008)

This special issue of JSTAT contains selected papers presented at the 2008 International Conference on the Discrete Simulation of Fluid Dynamics (DSFD 2008) held in Florianópolis, Brazil, on 4–8 August 2008. With the advent of ever faster computers, mesoscopic particle models, together with numerical simulations, provide scientists with a very powerful tool to investigate new challenges in complex flow problems, both at the fundamental and the applied levels. The recent years have witnessed many promising advances with the development of new theoretical frameworks and applications of the mesoscopic particle models. The DSFD series of conferences originated with the historic 1986 Los Alamos conference organized by Gary D Doolen. Since that time, the DSFD conferences have emerged as the premiere forum for researchers in the field, and at which many exciting new discoveries in lattice models of fluid dynamics have been first announced. Paper subjects range from the fundamentals of the kinetic theory and quantum transport to granular flows and high performance computing, but the main emphasis is on the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). In this aspect, papers were focused on the following topics: kinetic models; the Balescu kinetic equation with exchange interaction; kinetic formulation of magnetohydrodynamics; quantum lattice Boltzmann models; unstructured grids to integrate the Boltzmann equation (ULBE) for non-Newtonian flows; higher order multiple relaxation time lattice Boltzmann schemes; molecular dynamics and lattice Boltzmann approaches for the analysis of precursor films; droplet spreading on solid surfaces; biopolymer translocation through wide nanopores; droplet impact on superhydrophobic surfaces made up of an array of micron-scale posts in microfluidics; ballistic aggregation and fragmentation; dry granular flows for simulating snow avalanches; models of detailed combustion mechanisms within the lattice Boltzmann framework; hybrid methods that combine the lattice Boltzmann model with traditional finite difference techniques; boundary conditions in the LBM framework; high performance computing with graphic processing unit (GPU) hardware implementations. We expect that this issue will be valuable for researchers working in both theory and on engineering applications of discrete fluid algorithms based on particle methods, and on fundamental issues in quantum transport, kinetic theory and hydrodynamics including granular flows, interfacial phenomena, droplets and micro- and nanofluidics.
