Strawberry Festival: Small town feel with big time appeal SUE BROWN EDITOR

Earning Their Crowns BY CHRIS FILOTEO SPORTS EDITOR

POTEET– The 2016 Strawberry Festival King and Queen have come a long way leading up to the big event this weekend. Poteet juniors Isabella Wiederhold and Donovan Roanin Garcia II were crowned as the Queen and King roughly one month ago, but the duo’s dedication towards extra-curricular activities have prepared them for the whirlwind of the festival. “They build leadership skills and qualities,” Donovan said about his ties to the high school. Unfortunately Donovan tore his ACL in his left knee in the last scrimmage last season for the Aggies. And that meant Donovan had to sit out the entire basketball and tennis season this year, but he is a part of the Interact Club, which is a volunteer program helping clean areas around Poteet. Isabella is a National Honor Society member, along with the cheer captain at Poteet. “It helps with confidence, so we can become ready for situations like the festival,” she said.

“It’s an honor to be the cheer captain and next year I will try out for it again.” The 69th annual Strawberry Festival has been nothing short of a fun ride for the students. “It’s been pretty cool leading up to the festival,” Donovan said. “We are still receiving congratulations from people around the town.” Isabella is grateful for representing her hometown. “There are more things to be proud of with the festival approaching,” she said. “I was surprised when they announced my name. I really couldn’t believe it at first, but I am happy.” One issue in particular stands out this week when Donovan meanders throughout the massive crowd at the grounds. “Last year I was the prince, so this year being the king makes it feel good,” he said. “And my dad was the Strawberry Festival king thirty years ago, so that’s pretty cool too.” Between attending numerous parades around South Texas, with radio and newspaper interviews, the juniors have learned the importance of time management.

“I had to get a planner and it has worked out,” Isabella said. “There is no interference when I use my planner for upcoming parades and interviews.” The duo must attend at least half of the parades leading up to the event with trips to Hondo, Gonzales and other South Texas towns. And amongst all of the chaos, the two still find fun in the process. “We were really nervous for our radio interview,” Donovan said. “I messed up right off the bat and we had to start over,” Isabella said. “Now the message comes on the radio and people tell us they heard us on the radio, but we laugh because we know what happened in the beginning.” The Strawberry Festival parade is set for 10 a.m. with Isabella and Donovan on the main float this Saturday. Then, the two will observe the strawberry auction, which is held at the Rotary Pavilion Saturday from 2:304 p.m. CHRIS FILOTEO | PLEASANTON EXPRESS Congrats to Isabella and Isabella Wiederhold and Donovan Roanin Garcia II are the 2016 Strawberry Donovan as the two delve Queen and King. into the busiest week of their lives thus far.

Roy Garcia no stranger to Tejano music

Madelyn Victoria to share her soulful voice Madelyn Victoria is a 24 year old singer-songwriter from deep South Texas. Performing professionally since 15, Madelyn has made a name for herself in the Rio Grande Valley. Madelyn Victoria will grace the Bud Light Stage #10- Lions/Rotary Pavilion, on Saturday from 8:30-10:30 p.m. and again on Sunday, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Winning competitions such as the Caesar’s Palace Shania Twain Sing Off Contest and opening for names like Easton Corbin, Zac Brown Band, the Charlie Daniels Band, and many more; she has made an impression and paved a new path for all original artists in the RGV. This small lady has a

MADELYN VICTORIA powerful, rich soulful voice which brings a new fresh sound to the Country music scene. Her single “He Only Loves Me on the Dance Floor” has just been released and is available for purchase on iTunes. Madelyn can sing it all, but her true voice and songwriting ability lies within her Country music roots.

In 1994, Roy Garcia started his musical career as the lead vocalist for The Liberty Band and was signed to Joey International records where he recorded his first CD with the Liberty Band entitled “Approaching Storm.” Garcia is scheduled to perform on Friday, April 8, from 10-11:30 p.m. on H-E-B Stage #5- Veterans Pavilion. In March of 1995, after just a few short months in the Tejano industry, Roy was given the amazing opportunity to perform his first single “Mi Princesa” in front of an estimated crowd of 45,000 at The Alamodome in San Antonio, for the televised 15th Annual Tejano Music Awards. In 2011, after enjoying close to 15 years as a member of The Liberty Band, Roy decided to take some time away from the band and enjoy life outside the Tejano Music World. In the summer of 2013, Roy was tapped to be the

new vocalist for the threetime Grammy nominated Grupo Vida. Shortly after leaving Grupo Vida, Roy joined together with Javier Villarreal to form Roy Garcia y Grupo Sueño. In December of 2014, Roy finally took a leap of faith on himself and

parted ways with Grupo Sueño to branch out as a solo artist for the first time in his 20 year career. Roy is currently in the studio working on his first debut solo CD, which is being produced by multi Grammy recognized producers.

Natalie Rose to be at Festival

Angel Y Grupo Vimana among Sunday performers Formed in early 2012 the band, Angel Y Grupo Vimana, have already performed at huge venues such as the TTMA Fan Fair in San Antonio, the State Capitol Mexican Monument Dedication Showcase at Plaza Saltillo and Austin’s Traditional Cinco De Mayo Celebration at Fiesta Gardens. Within a short time they have shared the stage with names such as Jimmy Gonzalez y Grupo Mazz, Gary Hobbs and David Mares. The band is still trying to find their footing in the awesome world of Tejano music and we hope to someday be able to inspire others to pursue their dreams. The band will be part of Sunday’s entertainment line-up. They are scheduled to perform at 5:30 p.m. on Stage #11- Rotary Pavilion.

Like that first warm breeze from the south that lets you know Spring is coming after a hard Winter, Natalie Rose’s voice carries the promise of lifted spirits and better days ahead. There’s been some debate as to whether she could ride a horse before she could walk or sing before she could talk, but it’s safe to say there never was much time wasted. Natalie has never believed in limitations or done things according to other people’s timelines. She’s more than able to cover the latest hit, yet in the next song bring tears with a truly heartfelt rendition of a classic by one of the past greats. And she brings this range and reverence to her original songs, too. There’s something for everyone, which is a rare gift. Natalie Rose clearly respects the heritage of country music, while striving to be a big part of its future. One listen to her new EP “Promise Me Beautiful”, produced by Ray Benson at

Bismeaux Studio in Austin TX, will be proof of that. With the singles “Lonely Home” and “Shivers” charting high already, she is fast becoming known as the most promising new country singer in a long while. That would be good enough

for most, but not for an artist with the experience, ability, and determination of Natalie Rose. She will be performing at the festival on Sunday at the Metro PCS Stage #9 from 2 - 3:30 p.m. and again from 7 -8:30 p.m.

Laugh it up at SF Raymond Orta has been doing stand up comedy since he was 8 years old. Whether it’s his stage presence, his timing, his spot on impressions, his out of this world sound effects, Raymond Orta is a versatile comedian to say the least, but to say he’s funny is a monumental understatement. Funny doesn’t begin to describe this high energy show that will leave you clutching your ribs, massaging your face, even slapping tables and spitting fluids out of your nose and mouth. So sit back and enjoy one of the most incredible undiscovered talents in the country at the 69th Poteet

FRECKLES AT THE FESTIVAL

SUE BROWN | PLEASANTON EXPRESS

Freckles, the official mascot of the Poteet Strawberry Festival, can be seen strolling the festival grounds throughout the weekend.

Jazz great to perform at Strawberry Festival James Bolden was born February 9, 1950 to James and Rachel Bolden in Houston. From youth on he had a passion for music. He learned to play classical trumpet during his high school years and was a member of the school choir. Bolden went on to play the guitar. Playing with famous acts such as Stevie Wonder, Issac Hayes, Temptations, Supremes, The Spinners and James Brown he gained knowledge and reputation and was eventually asked to join Duke Ellington's band. He eventually joined B. B. King's Blues band and over the years became band leader of that band. He stayed with B. B. King for more than 30 years. King gave Bolden his nickname, "Boogaloo", because of Bolden's restless feet. Bolden's own R&B band is called the James Boogaloo Bolden Blues Band and will be featured at the Poteet Strawberry Festival on Saturday from 4-5:30 p.m. and Sunday from 4-5 p.m. on Bud Light Stage #10-Lions/Rotary Pavilion.

Di Marie to share Tejano, Regional Mexican music Though she comes from a family steeped in musical tradition, Di Marie often thought she’d never be here...a step away from success, sharing her debut album with Tejano and Regional Mexican-music lovers. Di Marie will entertain festival attendees on Friday night, from 8:30-10 p.m. on Stage #13- Lions Pavilion. Her first album is titled Todo De Mí (All of Me) and it’s obvious that this young singer and songwriter born in Lufkin, Texas, and living in San Antonio, has truly put all of her feeling, talent and charisma into this project. It’s a 10-song production, with eight cuts written by Di Marie herself. A family affair, it’s produced by her brother David Garza, with executive production by her father Albert Macías. Her musical fam-

ily also includes the renowned Tejano artist Roel Martínez. Since she was 6, Di Marie showed aptitude for music which was a constant presence in her home. However, chance and the ups and downs of love separated her from her calling. She joined a “girl group” that due to unforeseen circumstances split up after recording just one song. Now, as a solo artist, she feels fulfilled and is backed by a first-rate team. The first single, titled “Estoy Cansada” (I’m Tired), is a true story that plays out over a cumbia rhythm. “It’s about coming out of a bad relationship, about feeling stuck,” she says. It’s a song that can inspire her fans to take positive steps in their own lives. Todo De Mí is a well-

DI MARIE

thought out production. Each song is catchy and danceable, but the album is more than a collection of songs. Di Marie is a fresh talent whose songs about being a 20-something with hopes and dreams will resonate with all of us and make her one of Tejano music’s most talked-about new artists.

Abbi Walker is the real deal Abbi Walker is a pistol. A wild-eyed, big dreaming, hard working, 4th generation Preacher’s daughter from South Texas with a big voice and plenty to say. Abbi Walker is a fast rising Texas Country and Southern Rock artist, a songwriter with the personality and talent as big and as promising as her home state. Nominated for the Texas Regional Radio Music Awards New Female Artist Of The Year, Walker had both of her first two radio singles break the top 30, and even the top 20, on Texas Radio in the last year. At the same time she has been landing huge gigs opening for the likes of Keith Urban, Tim McGraw, Charlie Daniels, and even headlining the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s infamous club “The Hideout,” where she and her band closed out one of the biggest nights of the rodeo after Miranda Lambert played the arena. In fact, Walker was the only female booked to headline the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s Big Tent this year- a feat in and of itself. Since the release of her first Country album, “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” in 2012, Walker has been proving herself and her talent to the tough world of Country Music. Walker has been touring with her band for a little over a year and they’ve already played some of the best stages in Texas- The San Antonio Rodeo, The Houston Rodeo, Texas Crawfish Festival, Pat Green’s Venue in Dallas- The Rustic, Sandfest, and many more. The reviews are heartfelt and consistent“Abbi and her band keep the audience on their feetdancing, singing along, and asking for more.” Abbi is not just a talented singer, anyone who has seen her show can tell she loves to entertain, to perform- and between her and her band, they make sure everyone, of all ages, is having a great time. In December of 2014, Abbi raised over $20,000 through crowdfunding to help her record and produce her new full length album, FEISTY, and this brand new 12 song album is set to release on September 1st, 2015. Every

song, with the exception of 1 hymn, was written by Walker and co-written with her husband Ryan Petkoff or producer, Rick Alvarez. Walker’s new project FEISTY has southern rock, traditional country, and Abbi’s own brand of Southern Soulall within the lines of great country music. FEISTY features some of the best musicians in the great state of Texas, including the pedal steel and dobro work of the legendary Lloyd Maines. Maines, a man of very few words, when asked about the project said, “Abbi Walker is a fresh, new voice around the Texas Music Scene. She and Rick Alvarez have written and recorded some great songs for this record. I’m glad she included me in her music.” That’s about as high of a compliment as you can get from Lloyd Maines, who also happens to be the father of Dixie Chicks frontwoman, Natalie Maines. When asked about this next album, Walker said “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was really just my first try, first step in the right direction. It was a tiny budget for all 6 songs, and I am thrilled that it’s done so well- but this next record will blow that little EP out of the water…. in the best kind of way. In the last 2 years, I have grown a great deal in really knowing who I am as an artist and what I sound like, and my producer, Rick Alvarez, and I are overwhelmingly proud of FEISTY. It has excellence, attitude, and edge.”

PESADO TO PERFORM SATRUDAY

11:30 p.m., Saturday night Bud Light Stage - VFW Pavilion Though first known as Grupo Pesado, the Norteño group Pesado was founded by frontman/ accordionist Beto Zapata and Pepe Elizondo (bajo sexto, vocals) in 1993 in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. They debuted with the album Ayudame a Olvidar, released by MCM. “Llego el Amor” followed in 1994, soon achieving gold status. The following year, they scored a major hit with “Eso Me

Gusta.” In 1997, original bass player Rodolfo Guajardo was replaced by Juan Antonio Pequeño. A new lineup change occurred in 1999 when ex-Grupo Límite drummer Luis Mario Garza took Mario Padilla’s place. By the time of their seventh LP, 1999’s A Tu Encuentro, Pesado had signed to the new WeaMEX imprint, which would issue a series of greatest-hits albums for the group at the

turn of the millennium. “Todo Tuyo” was issued in early 2001 and marked the first time Pesado entered the charts. Several more albums followed (as their discography continued selling to gold and platinum status) before Pesado issued 2006’s Piensame un Momento, which continued their streak and earned the group a Grammy nomination for Best Norteño Album.

STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL HEADLINERS TO TAKE THE STAGE

Rick Treviño 3 p.m., Sunday Lions Club Pavilion

Rick Trevino, a Grammy-Award winning country music artist, signed to Columbia Nashville in 1993, releasing his debut single, “Just Enough Rope”, the first mainstream country music single to feature separate English and Spanish-language versions. The song was included on his debut album Dos Mundos; a self-titled album followed a year later. Trevino has charted a total of fourteen singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, and recorded seven studio albums. Trevino was born into a musical family -- his father was a member of a local Tejano group. Both of his parents fostered his

musical interests, and as

a child, he listened to a variety of music, including Tejano, country, classical pianist Van Cliburn, and mainstream pop/rockers like Elton John and Billy Joel. Soon, he was taking classical piano lessons and studying the clarinet. After graduating from high school, he was offered a baseball scholarship to Memphis State University, but he declined the offer to study music. His highest-charting single, “Running Out of Reasons to Run”, spent one week at Number One in 1997. His last chart entry was in 2007, though he continues to tour as of 2016.

I’m so proud to share the stage with such talented friends, and I can’t wait to see all of you at one of our shows!” Gray adds, “I’m looking so forward to being a part

of the J, J, and JJ tour! As fans and friends of both Josh and JJ, we’ve talked individually many times over the years of touring together and I couldn’t be more thrilled that we’ll all be together at the same time. The musicality of their work, the heart that drives what they do, and their unique dedication to making music that is both personal to them, serves something bigger than themselves.
