SHIFTING GEARS The 2020 National Franchise Conference focuses on prospering in a changing world

ith sell-out events in the last couple of years, the National Franchise Conference has become one of the must-do’s of the franchise world – and the 2020 event looks like being bigger than ever. Taking place on 17-19 June, this year’s Conference is moving to a larger venue – Claudelands in Hamilton. ‘This also allows delegates to choose their own accommodation, reducing costs to attend,’ explains Robyn Pickerill, the CEO of the Franchise Association which organises the Conference. Costs may be down, but the Conference looks to be better than ever, with a range of international and local presenters talking on topics related to the conference theme of ‘prospering in a changing world’. ‘Businesses of all types are facing challenges and disruption, so we thought it was a good opportunity to learn how franchises from different sectors are handling the change, and how they can help their franchisees do the same,’ Robyn explains. Speakers include:

International guest Ed Quinlan is the president of Chem-Dry which, with more than 4,000 franchisees in 57 countries, is the world’s largest carpet, upholstery, tile and wood cleaning company. This is Ed’s first visit to New Zealand, and he will talk about the continuing drive for innovation in a changing world. Another visitor from the USA is Steve LeFever, CEO and founder of Profit Mastery. Described as ‘part comedian, part financial manager, former commercial banker, current entrepreneur,’ Steve is a world-class presenter with a no-nonsense, laughout-loud approach to driving financial discipline and initiating change in franchises. His book, Profit Mastery: Knowledge-Driven Financial Performance has sold over one million copies. Three of New Zealand’s top franchise specialists are coming together to present a Legal State Of The Nation address. With proposed changes to the Fair Trading Act restricting contract terms, and new employment law potentially exposing franchisors to liability for employment law breaches by franchisees, how might your franchise be affected – and what do you need to do to protect it? Michelle van Gaalen is managing director of two well-known New Zealand brands, Smith & Smith and the Laser Plumbing and Electrical franchise. With over thirty years’ experience in business and leadership roles, and currently a member of the board of the Superannuation Fund Authority, Michelle will talk about the changing role of leaders in today’s world and the roles and responsibility of franchisors around leadership.
