Mother's Day gives people a special opportunity to show their gratitude to the moms, stepmoms, grandmas, aunts, and other maternal figures in their lives. And even those with some geographical distance can still celebrate their mom by sending a card and celebrating virtually.

SENIORS WITH WARM HEARTS

The Seniors with Warm Hearts would like to thank the members of the community who were so generous by participating in their recent raffle at the Spring Arts & Crafts Show. The monies raised will help the group support future charitable projects as the year moves forward.

The members would also like to thank those who donated to their recent collection for the Ukrainian refugees. They were able to raise $1005.00, which was sent directly to the two charities supporting Ukrainian refugees: World Central Kitchen, Inc., and Global Empowerment Mission. These organizations will provide direct assistance to the displaced Ukrainian people.

Members of their group also met recently to put together handmade Mother's Day cards for the children of SAFE House to give to their moms for Mother's Day. It is the member's hope that this simple gesture will put smiles on the children's faces as well as their moms.

The group's next meeting will be on Thursday, May 5, when they will wrap up their annual food drive by sorting and distributing the items donated to assist Helping Hands of Vegas Valley, Serving Our Kids Foundation and Street Teens.

TECHNOLOGY CLUB

On Thursday April 7, over 35 attendees participated in a discussion of how to “Cut the Cable Cord” using streaming services over the internet. This topic has been the most popular topic and has now been presented three times to large groups of residents.

Qung Go led the discussion with an actual case study of “Cutting the Cord.” This was moving from DIRECTV to using a combination of video streaming services (DIRECTVNow, Netflix, Amazon, Price, and Pluto) to lower cost and yet have similar content. Savings of over $300 per year were estimated.

The group also discussed the prerequisites for cutting the cable: good internet connection; Roku Box or Amazon Fire Stick; and a good selection of video streaming services. YouTube TV appears to be an increasingly popular streaming service (which may match well with Cox, Dish, and DIRECTV) as well as the free Pluto streaming service. Of course the choice of streaming services must match your content choices and budget.

After years of having to choose between only Cox, DIRECTV, Dish, and CenturyLink, residents now have the opportunity to reduce cable tv expenditures by replacing with video streaming services at much lower prices. Residents are encouraged to research and compare these services with their current cable supplier.

Please join the next meeting on Thursday, May 5 when the topic will be “Tips on Using the iPhone and PC.”

VETERANS CLUB

Congratulations to the newly elected officers of the Veteran's Club! Beginning April 15, the follow individuals will assume their respective offices:

• Chairman - LeRoy Munson • Vice Chairman - Patricia Goeppinger • Secretary/Treasurer - Sondra Harrington

As we welcome in the month of May, it is so beautiful to still see snow still up on Mount Charleston, and within our community of Sun City Aliante, trees are still sprouting new leaves and flowers around the community welcoming in another season of Spring with Summer starting to emerge around the corner. We celebrate Mother's Day, and welcome in Memorial Day and Armed Forces Day.

The Veterans Club will be putting up our American Flags to remember Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day. The date for Flags Up are from May 21st through June 4th. We welcome everyone who wishes to Volunteer for this event. We usually meet at 6:30 in the morning in the parking lot outside of the Community Center. We collaborate with our great Scouts. Some Scouts are just short of becoming Eagle Scouts. These are truly remarkable young people.

On a sad note, I want to address two members of the Veterans Club who recently passed in our community here in Sun City Aliante. Mr. John Taylor and Mr. Owen Egge. Both Veterans meant a great deal to the Veterans Club and to the Community of Sun City Aliante.

Mr. John Taylor who retired from the United States Air Force served his country honorably. John was a true patriot and was involved in our Club for several years and volunteered for so many of our events. When you met John, he automatically put a smile on your face. John managed the raffle tickets for Seniors Assisting Seniors during the Golf Tournaments. He was instrumental in fine tuning our club's membership list that consisted of over 300 members. Another wonderful thing John did was putting on the J Marshall VIP(Visually Impaired Putters) Tournament.

Mr. Owen Egge served in the United States Navy. Owen was honorably discharged from the United States Navy and later moved to Sun City Aliante. He was also a patriot to our country. Owen served on the Board of Directors of Sun City Aliante. Owen was an original member of the Veterans Club and was instrumental in getting the original monument through the approval process and assisted by Sy Nielson in the design, acquisition and wording on the original monument and its location in the courtyard of the Community Center. He participated in many of the Veterans Club events and was always willing to lend a helping hand at all of our programs.

Owen was one of the founders of Seniors Assisting Seniors. As one of its founders, he put together a host of volunteers throughout the years he also gracefully served in.

Owen, I will miss you greatly and I know the Veterans Club and the entire Community of Sun City Aliante will miss you as well.

God Bless you both John and Owen.

In Fond Memories from the Veterans Club and Sun City Aliante Community.

VETS365

VETS365 has suddenly accelerated its mission. We just received our first shipping container that will be put on land in Pahrump shortly. They must raise $10,000 to convert it. They will continue to look for corporate sponsors and personal donations for this. They also need Volunteer Carpenters to help them convert the first home.

The group is working with the City of Las Vegas to offer Parks and Recreation classes to the community. This will help expand their reach to veterans in need. Staff members are also volunteering once a month to feed the homeless with a non-profit called CARES on the east side of Las Vegas. They accept donations of blankets, pillows, backpacks, canned foods with easy-to-open tops, men's, and women's clothing. If you can donate or help them with carpenter skills, please call Sheila Cohen at 952-491-4121. Thanks for all you do to help us!
