MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT ED SLOMAN FAREWELL TO DAMIAN CARRASCO – REMEMBER TO VOTE!

Most of you are probably aware that Damain Carrasco, our General Manager for the past eight years, has resigned as of Monday, March 24. I have been working closely with the FirstService Residential team to find a replacement for his position.
We officially welcomed Damian in September 2017. Since then, he has made a dynamic impact on the Sun City Aliante community through his leadership and inspiring his staff to strive for Customer Service Excellence in everything they do.
Looking back over the years, I have had the opportunity to get to know him well, both professionally and personally With that in mind, I would like to share some of the major projects he oversaw during his career with Sun City Aliante, working in concert with Board. Here are just a few of his accomplishments:
• During COVID – Closed & opened the Community Center following state guidelines; adhered to sanitation and spacing requirements; and worked with the city to ensure our residents were one of the first to receive the COVID vaccine & booster shots.
• Expansion & Enclosure Project – Added 3,500 square feet of space to the Community Center and remodeled an additional 2,000 square feet of space.
• Converted the Common Areas to Desertscape Landscape - which reduced water costs and provided a substantial rebate to the community
• Installed the RecTrac System for collecting income & registering events.
• Launched the new Sun City Aliante website.
• Installed an upgraded Sound System in the Vista Room.
• Renovated and enhanced community entrances at the Widewing and Broadwing.
• Installed a new thermostat system, supplied by NV Energy, at no cost to the community.
• Expanded The Breeze magazine from 32 to 52 pages, allowing for increased advertising revenue and more content.
• Under his leadership, Sun City Aliante was named "Best Large HOA Community in Southern Nevada" for five of the past seven years including 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023. We were nominated for the award in 2020 and 2024.
On behalf of the Board, I want to thank Damian for his many years of service which have helped to make Sun City Aliante one of the most sought-after HOA communities for active adults, age 55+, in the Las Vegas Valley We truly appreciate his leadership, tireless dedication, and friendship.
In closing, I want to remind you to vote for three candidates who best represent your interests in the upcoming election for the Board of Directors. If you missed the Candidate Forum, you can view a video of the event online at www.suncityaliante.org. Once you are on the homepage, select “News Flash” on the right. Then click on the Candidates' Page link to access the video and Candidate Statements. Ballots will be mailed early in April and must be turned by May 14 at 8 a.m.
Wishing you the best in April and enjoy the warmer weather!

SPRING
TALKs and WALKs, with TREES! REMEMBER our ELECTION! VOTE with BOTH ENVELOPES!

Temperatures encourage everyone to get outdoors and enjoy nature, before the sweltering summer heat. Strolling tree-lined streets or trails, or sitting in
contribute to our health and well-being.
Recently, North Las Vegas Park District staff spoke at our Community Center, describing many nearby amenities: from trails (app: Neon to Nature) to Senior Centers, to FREE concerts. DID YOU KNOW there are many trails, parks, play and dog areas in the new Tule Springs developments to our east? They all have trees, and are well worth the short walk!
Eddie Rodriguez the city's Municipal Forester, helped us understand the Urban Heat Island Effect. Though we live in the suburbs, the Effect happens here too. A LOT Our lack of trees, and their cover or canopy, contributes to both hotter days and nights. North Las Vegas has only about 3% of our space as tree canopy With so little coverage, our exposed concrete and blacktop captures the sun's heat, and releases it much slower overnight back into the air. Areas with few, if-any, trees average higher temperatures. https://www.cityofnorthlasvegas.com/things-to-do/municipal-forestry
Trees are one of the few things that cool our environment. Without their shade, trapped heat radiates back, and can contribute to heat-related health issues. In 2024, there were nearly 500 heat-related deaths in Clark County! Trees also remove some air pollution, like volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and ultrafine particles. Think paint fumes and car exhaust. More trees reduce heat, AND trap pollutants; a win-win for all of us.
The City and Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) are serious about increasing canopy coverage. The City's ambitious goal is to increase our canopy, from 3% to 20% by 2030. They recently gave away 100 FREE Trees! Did you get one?
SCAL residents can help reach this goal, and enjoy the benefits of more canopy THINK! How many trees are around your home? Is it at least 3? ARC requires at least 1 in the front yard, and one on the side yard. Have you cut one down recently, but not replaced it? Please plant new trees, with ARC approval . The next City FREE 100 TREE GIVE AWAY is 12 April at 9 a.m., Prentiss Walker Park, 1509 June Ave. Go get one!
Walking around Sun City Aliante (SCAL), I see many dead or sick trees. Eddie suggests planting new ones that provide good canopy, AND are BOTH drought and heat tolerant. Use SCAL's Approved Plants list with S N WA

Replacing TREES can SAVE YOU MONEY on cooling costs, AND SNWA has a $100 CASH REBATE for new trees! 'Even more if you remove real g r a s

Finally, I want to thank the many wonderful homeowners – too numerous to mention – whom I have met and shared stories with over the years. I will treasure memories of those meetings and opportunities to communicate with you and learn about your life and your families.
Thank you – one and all – for allowing me to be part of your lives for the past nearly eight years. In summary, as a great entertainer, Bob Hope, often said many times to so many people, “THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES!”

April offers new opportunities to stay ACTIVE while living in the fabulous Sun City Aliante Community:
COMMUNITY STANDARDS

Hello, Residents!
y considering updates to your landscaping. It's always exciting to refresh our outdoor spaces, but as you plan, we encourage you to be mindful of the trees and plants you choose. Consider whether they will be high-maintenance or if they might impact your n
guidance, Carol and I are happy to assist.
Pigeons, Rodents, and Community Cleanliness
Recently, our office has received numerous complaints about pigeons and rodents. This is a shift from the usual concerns regarding dog barking, unleashed pets, or owners neglecting to clean up after their dogs. While pigeons may seem harmless, they can carry diseases and parasites, and their droppings create significant mess and damage. These birds thrive on scavenging food from garbage bins, sidewalks, and —unfortunately — residents who leave food outside.
Feeding wild pigeons is not just discouraged; it is unlawful in North Las Vegas and considered a public nuisance. Violators may face fines of up to $1,000, potential jail time, or both. Additionally, lingering pigeons attract rodents, which pose further health risks. To help keep our community clean and safe, we strongly urge residents to avoid hand-feeding birds or placing food outside, including in bird feeders. Even hummingbird feeders, which contain sugar water, can unintentionally attract pigeons.
Community Leadership & Responsible Change
Since the 2024 election, our community has experienced changes — some welcome, some more challenging. Change is inevitable, but there is a difference between responsible, thoughtful progress and changes that create division.
A strong community balances personal freedoms with collective well-being. While transparency is important, it's also essential to recognize the role of the Board of Directors in making informed decisions for the community's best interests. A call for transparency should not mean undermining the Board's ability to lead effectively. Managing an HOA involves navigating complex issues, and not all information is straightforward or easy to interpret. Misinformation or misinterpretation can lead to unnecessary confusion and unrest.
Good leadership requires integrity, humility, and a commitment to unity Throughout the years, dedicated committee volunteers have worked alongside management to keep this community running smoothly, and their contributions should be recognized and valued. Moving forward, it's crucial that the Board and residents continue fostering a respectful and informed dialogue — one that focuses on solutions rather than division.
Fond Farewell
I wish the very best to Damian Carrasco, General Manager with his new journey Thank you for allowing me to build a “High Performance” Lifestyle Department that continually exceeds expectations with its successful Fitness Instructors and program, a thriving Chartered Club and Special Interest Group base of 44 + groups, very impressive Breeze Magazine, professional Front Desk Operations, and an Event Calendar that is like no other
You've been an amazing leader, visionary, and coach that has held Sun City Aliante to the highest standards. You will be missed very much. Beautiful memories last forever
Happy Easter!
Debbie Kent, Lifestyle Director
As the Board works together to maintain and improve this community, remember that respect, cooperation, and fact-based discussions will always be more effective than conflict.
My hope for this community is that the residents continue to thrive and appreciate the goodness that makes Sun City Aliante a premier place to live. A community flourishes when there is a genuine partnership between Board members and management rooted in respect, trust, and humility. When those three things disintegrate, nobody stays.

Last month, I was also happy to join Doug Guild, our City Director of Parks and Recreation, as we celebrated a new season of community baseball by throwing the first pitch at the opening day of Cheyenne Little League at Seastrand Park. This event brought together families, young athletes, and community leaders and highlighted the importance of recreational programs in building a healthier, more connected community The joy and enthusiasm of that day underscored how sports can serve as a powerful catalyst for unity and community pride. I also had th
moderator for the Sun City Candidate Forum. T
opportunity for community members to hear directly from candidates eager to share their visions for the future of the Sun City Aliante Community These discussions also empower voters with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions and ensure that their voice is heard.

I proudly took part in the Vietnam Vet's Appreciation Awards on March 18th. This special recognition pays tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of our local Vietnam veterans, whose selfless service has enriched our community and protected our freedom.
It is our duty and privilege to express our gratitude to these heroes, whose legacy of commitment inspires us all.

Looking ahead, the City of North Las Vegas is excited about the new Dolores Huerta Resource Center The DHRC is named in honor of renowned labor activist and co-founder of the United Farm Workers Association, Dolores Huerta. The one-
education, legal services, physical and mental health support, and technology training in both English and Spanish. Conveniently located at 1737 Hunkins Dr behind City Hall and operated by The Just One Project, the center will house at least seven non-profit organizations, each bringing expertise and support to meet the diverse needs of our community.
Each of these initiatives reflects the City's commitment to making North Las Vegas a place where opportunity, support, and community go hand in hand. As we celebrate our veterans, empower our youth, and open new doors for residents, we continue building a brighter, more inclusive future for all.

PATROL COMMITTEE

Obstacles in the street and on the sidewalk pose a safety hazard to you and others. None of us have the vision or reflexes we once had. S
marking them are important steps to making our community safe.
L
delivered and dumped on the road. Many materials, such as rock and sand, have colors that blend with the road. In addition, the piles of material might be difficult to see, particularly, at night. Hitting even a small pile of sand or rock can cause serious damage to a car and can injure the passengers. Landscapers are required to put safety cones down. If you have a landscaper and they do not put out cones, ask them to do so. If they refuse, you should think about what other safety requirements they are not following. If you still want to use them, you should get cones and place them around your material for the safety of your neighbors.
Trailers are another obstacle that we find on our streets. Trailers come in all sizes and shapes. Flatbed trailers can be especially difficult to see because they are low and often dark in color If the trailer belongs to a contractor, they are responsible for putting cones around the trailer. If you bring the trailer into the community or the contractor you hire will not put up cones, you should put cones around the trailer yourself. Trailers that are enclosed may be easier to see, especially if they are light colored and reflective on the sides. All trailers should have cones around them. Even if the body of the trailer is visible, the hitch of the trailer needs to be marked with a cone.
Moving containers are frequently bright and have a reflective surface because the owner knows they may be stored on the street. Moving containers should be marked with safety cones to create a safety space between the container and an approaching vehicle. As long as it is bright and highly visible, it is not as important.
Recreational vehicle cones come in all colors which determines how easy it is to see them. Cones are required no matter how visible the RV. Popouts should not be extended into the street. However, if it is, it is vital to have cones which make it clear to anyone driving by that extra room is needed to get around the RV safely.
In conclusion, if you are responsible for any obstacle in the road, mark it so no one accidentally hits it. Cones are recommended and readily available at home improvement stores There are other street hazard markers that do the same job and are perfectly acceptable. Do your part, stay safe and help keep the community safe.

fact, one-fifth of an individual's life is lived suffering from a disease or chronic condition. Disease undermines our ability to maintain control of our day to day lives. In essence, disease ages us, and before we know it, it has cost us our independence.
We are looking for participants to help beta test a new app called Modern Aging. Our goal is to help users monitor and improve cognitive, emotional and physical wellbeing through various activities which will be compared to their historical baseline data to detect improvements, declines and trends. Additional layers of examination will be available through assessments which will be taken periodically to validate progress. Through personalized coaching and shared results, Modern Aging will help individuals stay attuned to their overall health.
Our team includes medical consultants, who are experts within their fields, dedicated to analyzing the data and identifying any concerns or correlations. Your information will be fully secured and never be sold or shared with third parties; it remains entirely your property. Should you choose to withdraw from the study, we will promptly delete your data.

TRAVEL
FINDING YOUR TRAVEL STYLE
Solo, Not Lonely: Finding Joy and Connection While Traveling Alone

It wasn't long ago that my mother-in-law raised an eyebrow and asked, “Why would you want to travel without your husband?” Her question was laced with genuine curiosity, but also a hint of disbelief. In her world, vacations were meant for couples, a shared experience of t o g e t h e r n e s s . B u t f o r m e , t r a v e l h a s a l w a y s b e e n a b o u t exploration—both of the world and of myself. In Australia, it's not uncommon for partners to take separate vacations, each embracing their own interests and adventures before returning home with new stories to share. Solo travel isn't about loneliness; it's about independence, curiosity, the joy of discovering places at your own pace and often making new friends with shared interests.
Safety: The number one concern for most solo travelers—especially those new to it—is safety But traveling “solo” doesn't have to mean being entirely alone. In fact, some of the best solo adventures come from connecting with others who share your interests. Whether it's joining a small-group tour, linking up with fellow travelers through online communities, or taking a class in something you love — like cooking in Tuscany or photography in Iceland—you can enjoy the freedom of solo travel while still having the comfort and security of companionship. Being mindful of your surroundings, choosing well-lit accommodations, and trusting your instincts are all key, but so is embracing the camaraderie that travel naturally fosters. Solo travel isn't about isolation — it's about stepping into the world on your own terms while welcoming the connections that make the journey even richer
Where to Find Others: Finding like-minded travelers is easier than ever with the right resources. Meetup.com connects you with local events and interest groups worldwide, while Facebook groups like “Solo in Style: 50+ Travelers” offer a platform to find travel companions. LinkedIn can be useful for networking at industry events or conferences. In-person options include bookstore events, art gallery openings, cooking classes, and museum tours, which naturally attract both locals and visitors.
Special interest tours — such as photography trips or wine tastings — also provide built-in connections with fellow travelers. Whether online or in person, these options make it easy to find companionship while keeping your independence.
Websites like Meetup.com allow travelers to find local events, walking tours, or age-based gatherings in cities worldwide, making it easy to meet people with shared interests. Facebook groups dedicated to solo travelers over 50, such as “Solo in Style: 50+ Travelers” or “Women Who Travel,” provide a platform to exchange tips and even arrange meetups with fellow members. If you're a professional or have a strong network, LinkedIn can also be a surprising resource—many industries host global networking events, conferences, or interestb a s e d
University often hosts Alumni Travel or gatherings.

encounters happen in person. Visiting a bookstore event, an art gallery opening, or a local cooking class can be a great way to meet people in a low-pressure setting. Many museums, cultural centers, and even breweries or coffee shops offer group experiences that attract both locals and travelers alike. Another great option is joining a special interest tour—photography trips, wine-tasting excursions, or historical walking tours often bring together travelers with similar passions, making it easy to form connections.
Before you GO: Before committing to travel on your own, take a moment to ask yourself a few key questions to ensure it's the right choice. What is the group size, and does it match my comfort level? Smaller groups often offer a more intimate experience, while larger ones can be more social but less flexible. What is the itinerary like, and does it align with my interests and travel style?
Some tours are fast-paced, while others allow for leisurely exploration. What's included in the cost? Understanding accommodations, meals, and activity fees can help avoid unexpected expenses. Who is the trip designed for? Some groups cater to active adventurers, while others focus on cultural immersion or luxury travel. What's the cancellation or refund policy? Plans can change, so knowing the flexibility of your booking is key. Asking these questions ensures you choose a trip that enhances your solo travel experience rather than limiting it.
Solo travel doesn't mean you have to be on your own the entire time. With a little effort, you can find enriching experiences that allow for independence while still creating meaningful connections along the way
