Pattaya mayor pledges community cooperation

VOL. XXVI No. 42

Buddhist Lent ends Wednesday, October 24 Wednesday, October 24 marks the end of this year’s Buddhist Lent, or Auk Pansaa, celebrated on the full moon night of the eleventh lunar month of the year. The event also marks the “official” end of the rainy season, even though the weather might not necessarily cooperate. The following day is Thod Kathin, which involves the annual presenting of

Pattaya’s new mayor Sonthaya Kunplome and his deputies met with representatives from the city’s 44 neighborhoods and pledged to work more closely with community groups to solve the city’s problems.

Warapun Jaikusol Pattaya’s new mayor pledged to work more closely with community groups to solve the city’s problems. Sonthaya Kunplome and his deputies met Oct. 8 with Orawan Sukananwong, president of the Pattaya Communities Association,

and representatives from the city’s 44 neighborhoods. Sonthaya pledged that his administration would work together with communities and asked community leaders to take care of quality of life issues to help residents. Communities, he said, are considered key to sustainably and correctly developing

Pattaya by solving problems together. Communities know more about the problems facing Pattaya residents and their suggestions in solving them are essential. Sonthaya acknowledged that water and flooding issues are high priorities and said the city is working on long-term solutions.

Pattaya makes stopgap move to control Khao Talo flooding Jetsada Homklin Engineers cut new drainage trenches in two floodinundated areas in East Pattaya while city hall waits for funding of two long-term flooding solutions. Deputy Mayors Pattana Boonsawat and Banlue Kullavanijaya oversaw the work on the railway parallel road behind Wat Thamsamakee and behind Pattaya Floating Market Oct. 11. Work crews used a backhoe to dig a trench to allow water to flow from the area and cut grass impeding drainage. The steps are only stopgaps while Pattaya waits for funding of two major water-management projects. The first, the Khao Talo pumping station, is further along, with Pattaya hiring Koffer Joint Venture Co., to install six pumps capable of handling 0.75 cubic meters of water per second along with a 5,400-cu.-meter wastewater storage tank and pipelines to move the water to the Huay Yai Pumping Station.

clean new ropes to monks. A great number of lay people will be gathering at their local temples to pay their respects, make merit, perform the Tak Bat Dhevo ceremony and place steamed rice wrapped in coconut palm leafs, called “kao tom hang”, into monks’ alms bowls. Other religious ceremonies will also take place at local temples.

Jetsada Homklin Despite trenches being cut in the freshly laid sand, Pattaya Beach generally is looking healthier now that the beach-restoration effort has reached its mid-point. Work crews have passed Central Road as they continue to widen the beach,

bring in new sand and lay underwater breakwaters to prevent erosion. Across the northern section of beachfront, tourists could be seen laying on mats, eating, sunbathing and enjoying family activities on sand that looked brighter, wider and smoother. Pattaya, however, has

undermined the half-billionbaht project by cutting holes in the beachfront pavement, allowing storm runoff to stream onto the beach and cut fresh trenches in the new sand. The overall project is slated to finish Nov. 19, but additional patch jobs obviously will be required.

Pattaya pet owners relieved at delay in animal law amendments Warapun Jaikusol

Engineers cut new drainage trenches in two floodinundated areas in East Pattaya while city hall waits for funding of two long-term flooding solutions.

Pattaya officials also are investigating the floating market, which filled in land next to the tourist attraction which caused the flooding. The long-discussed drainage system for the railway road – which would include new pipes, culverts and traps – is at the same point it was three years ago: nowhere. Pattaya has requested 665

million baht under the government’s Eastern Economic Corridor project, but no funds have been approved. Mayor Sonthaya Kunplome said that while the city waits for the EEC money, he has ordered the Engineering Department to draw up a list of possible vendors and needed equipment, including eight new pumps for the project.

Pattaya animal lovers expressed relief that the Agriculture Ministry was forced to revise its amendments to the 2014 Cruelty Prevention and Welfare of Animal Act after they were approved by the Cabinet without public input. The junta had ramrodded through the changes to the law without any feedback from pet owners, prompting a massive backlash once Cabinet approval was announced. be slapped with a 25,000baht fine. Following a nationwide outcry, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha backed down and ordered the ministry to revise the law after consulting with the public and animal-rights groups. No estimate has been given on when, or if, the law will be revived. Pattaya residents Sunisa D u a n g h i r a n and Gerry Rasmus, who care for about 60 stray dogs and cats, said they would have been forced to stop their welfare work had the law taken effect. Not only could they not afford the fee, but they doubted the 4.5 billion baht raised

nationwide from the law actually would have gone to protecting animals. The fee would have been comprised with a 50-baht registration fee, 100 baht for an animal health booklet, and 300 baht for an ID microchip. But the law did not state what the revenue raised would be used for. Pet owners want to see the money spent on promotion of animal welfare, including sterilization and vaccinations. The couple echoed the sentiments of critics nationwide, saying the payor-be-fined nature of the law would have prompted mass dumping of pets.

Pattaya gives up on Jomtien flood control, demolishes footpath to vent water

FRIDAY OCTOBER 19, 2018 3

Nokyang encroachment demolitions to continue as planned

Jetsada Homklin Having already demolished parts of the Pattaya Beach footpath to let floodwaters through, Pattaya officials are now doing the same in Jomtien Beach. Deputy Mayor Pattana Boonsawat on Oct. 10 oversaw the work in front of his Surf Kitchen restaurant, near the Kasikornbank Jomtien Beach Road office and another spot near there. Unable to properly control flooding and drainage, Pattaya officials have basically thrown in the towel, destroying parts of the recently rebuilt beachfront to allow flood runoff to reach the sea. While in Jomtien, the deputy

mayor also discovered an illegal garbage dump next to the Sai 2 Condo, another

testament to Pattaya’s growing garbage crisis. He ordered it cleaned up.

Mayor meets with neighbors to tackle Pattaya’s flooding problem Keng Na Songkhla Pattaya’s mayor met with counterparts from neighboring sub-districts to brainstorm solutions to the city’s chronic flooding problem. Sonthaya Kunplome said involvement from surrounding municipalities is essential, as storm runoff flows downhill from there into the city. Another part of the problem is encroachment on the Naklua, Suapaew, Nong Yai, South Pattaya and Kratinglai canals, and a lack of maintenance of those waterways, which limits the amount of water they can handle. Small storm-drainage pipelines and overdevelopment also are factors, he said. Sonthaya said Pattaya has an operational Mayor Sonthaya Kunplome met with plan to solve the flooding problem divided counterparts from neighboring sub- into short-, medium- and long-term solutions. districts to brainstorm solutions to the But it needs help to make that water-management plan a success. city’s chronic flooding problem.

Pik Plub Canal expansion to finish by Nov. Jetsada Homklin Work to widen the Pik Plub Canal is expected to wrap by month’s end, increasing the speed at which Naklua storm runoff can drain. Pattaya deputy mayors Pattana Boonsawat and Banlue Kullavanijaya checked the progress on the canal’s gate expansion, which will widen its opening from a meter wide to 2.6 meters and extend the gate from 50 to 90 meters. Currently the project is waiting for the Provincial Waterworks Authority to remove water pipes. Once they’re relocated the city will dig the rest of the trench to complete the project, hopefully by the end of October. The project will greatly expand the rate at which water drains from the canal into the

sea, improving flooding woes in Naklua. The deputy mayors also checked out progress on new drainage pipes being laid under Soi Kanrua in

Naklua. Previously sand in storm runoff repeatedly clogged the narrow pipes. New wider pipes are being laid to replace them, along with a culvert to catch the sand.

Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasingh said that demolitions planned for encroaching structures on the Nokyang Canal will be carried out as scheduled.

Warapun Jaikusol Naklua residents hoping that a new administration in Pattaya City Hall would drop plans to demolish their homes for encroaching on public land are in for a rude surprise. Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasingh said Oct. 8 that demolitions planned for encroaching structures on the Nokyang Canal will be carried out as scheduled. That news bursts the bubbles for residents who have speculated that the replacement of the former

regime last month with Sonthaya Kunplome would mean a reprieve for them. Ekasingh, who also served as deputy mayor to Itthiphol Kunplome, oversaw some demolitions at the South Pattaya Canal, but left others there in place and never issued an order against encroachments at the Nokyang or Pukplub canal. The military-appointed administrators who took over for Itthiphol in 2015 not only completely cleared the remainder of the South Pattaya Canal, but all the encroachments at

the Pukplub Canal and began proceedings at Nokyang. Ekasingh lauded the previous administration’s efforts and said they would continue, acknowledging some residents thought that career politician Sonthaya – who still heads the Palong Chon Party – would be concerned about offending his base of voters in next year’s elections. Absolutely not, Ekasingh confirmed, saying the demolitions would be carried out according to the law, although the city would offer relocation assistance to those affected.

Nine foreigners who had overstayed their visas and two other foreign nationals working without a permit were scooped up in Pattaya in the Immigration Bureau’s latest “Operation X-Ray Foreigner” sweep. About 40 Pattaya, Tourist and Immigration police officers spread out across the area for the Oct. 12 crackdown, the latest in a series of sweeps that began early this year. Officers checked apartment houses, condos and hotels, which are required to report foreign nationals residing there. No information on those arrested was released.

Boonlua Chatree A Trat man died after setting himself on fire at a Pattaya temple. The remains of Peerapong Jirakulratwong were still smoldering when authorities arrived at Sutthawat Temple shortly after 5 a.m. Oct. 11. Around him they found an

empty gasoline jug, a patient card from a Trat hospital, mobile phone and burnt lottery tickets. Security-camera footage showed Peerapong entering the temple grounds after the gates opened at 5 a.m. and proceeding to the crematorium where he self-immolated. Peerapong’s mother, Chavee

Thammakeeree, 77, and sister, Boonta Petchraingam, 44, met later that day with police and explained that the victim had come to live in Pattaya three months ago after working as a van driver in Trat. Chavee said he had suffered heart problems related to high blood pressure about two weeks ago and has had problems sleeping since. She said he left the house early, grumbling about insomnia. But, on the way out, he told his mother, “I pray to be born again as (her) son in the next life”, setting off alarm bells. She called her daughter and tried to find Peerapong, but it was too late.

Floating Market’s neighbors still under water, more investigation ahead Boonlua Chatree Somnuk Huayyai’s family has been living on the same three-rai property in East Pattaya since the 70-year-old’s grandmother built a house there. But for the past 10 years she’s also lived with flooding. Located behind the Pattaya Floating Market, Somnuk’s property has become nearly unlivable due to both flooding and the tourist attraction’s garbage that piles up in front of her home. And when she tried to sell, the market

low-balled its offer, she said. But Somnuk is not alone. Since June, residents between Sukhumvit Soi 83 and 98 had complained that Floating Market management has continually filled property it owns near the park, raising it to a higher level than surrounding land. But because the land-filling has been uneven and sporadic, large lakes form after heavy rain. The lakes then overflow and all the water runs downhill into their yards. In response, Pattaya’s

former administrators had 40 meters of 60-centimeter-wide pipe laid to take flood waters to the main drainage pipe on Sukhumvit Road. In addition, the crews cleaned out the existing drainage pipes of mud and garbage. But those are only temporary fixes. New Deputy Mayor Pattana Boonsawat visited Somnuk Oct. 11 to check on the progress of this summer’s work, and found more needs to be done. Somnuk said investors offered to buy her land with offers of a new house and

Pattana said there are longterm plans to install a 5,000cu.meter tank to catch storm runoff, but there’s no estimate on when it will be built. In the interim, he said, city hall could act as a mediator with the Floating Market to offer her a fair market rate for her land if she still wants to sell. He also pledged to speed up the investigation into whether the Floating Market illegally filled in the land and broke any laws by causing flooding of neighboring property.

More than 10,000 people participated in the annual Phra Buddha Maha Dhamaracha Bathing Ceremony in Phetchabun province on Tuesday, Oct. 10. Petchabun Governor Suebsak Iamwicharn carried the statue into the Pasak River as part of the bathing rite which took place at Wat Chanaman Temple. The statue, also known

among the local people as Phra Buddha Maha Dhamaracha, was brought to the temple on a traditional barge with a Himavanta animal figurehead specifically designed for this year’s event. The barge was among 24 others in the procession that traveled along the river from Wat Trai Bhumi Temple before arriving at Wat Chanaman Temple where the bathing

ceremony was held. Many people on both embankments came to see the spectacle. Phetchabun City Mayor Seksarn Niyompeng said the bathing ceremony is one of the biggest events that bring people from all over the country to Phetchabun. Up to 20 million baht is expected to be in circulation throughout the 10 day-event. Hotel bookings also rose by 80%. (NNT)

Microsoft co-founder, philanthropist Paul Allen dies at 65 Phuong Le Seattle (AP) - Paul G. Allen, who co-founded Microsoft with his childhood friend Bill Gates before becoming a billionaire philanthropist who invested in conservation, space travel, arts and culture and professional sports, died Monday. He was 65. He died in Seattle from complications of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, his company Vulcan Inc. announced. Gates said he was heartbroken about the loss of one of his “oldest and dearest friends.” “Personal computing would not have existed without him,” Gates said in a statement. “But Paul wasn’t content with starting one company. He channeled his intellect and compassion into a second act focused on improving people’s lives and strengthening communities in Seattle and around the world. He was fond of saying, ‘If it has the potential to do good, then we should do it,’” Gates wrote. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella called Allen’s contributions to the company, community and industry “indispensable.” “As co-founder of Microsoft, in his own quiet and persistent way, he created magical

Over the course of several decades, Allen gave more than $2 billion to a wide range of interests, including ocean health, homelessness and advancing scientific research.

“Millions of people were touched by his generosity, his persistence in pursuit of a better world, and his drive to accomplish as much as he could with the time and resources at his disposal,” Vulcan CEO Bill Hilf said in a statement. The law came into effect on Oct. 1 as part of an update of 22-year-old customs legislation. It also gives customs officials authority to copy data found on searched devices. “The traveling public is unlikely to notice much difference at the border,” the New Zealand Customs Service said in a statement last week. But the New Zealand Council for Civil Liberties said the law gives customs officials the power to force travelers to unlock their smartphones without justification, and without legal options for travelers to challenge an order to enter a password. “Modern smartphones contain a large amount of highly

The two friends would later drop out of college to pursue the future they envisioned: A world with a computer in every home. Gates so strongly believed it that he left Harvard University in his junior year to devote himself full-time to his and Allen’s startup, originally called MicroSoft. Allen spent two years at Washington State University before dropping out as well. They founded the company in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and their first

The Windows operating system is now used on most of the world’s desktop computers, and Word is the cornerstone of the company’s prevalent Office products. Gates and Allen became billionaires when Microsoft was thrust onto the throne of technology. After Gates and Allen found some success selling their programming language, MS-Basic, the Seattle natives moved their business in 1979 to Bellevue, Washington, not far from its eventual home in Redmond. Microsoft’s big break came in 1980, when IBM Corp. decided to move into personal computers and asked Microsoft to provide the operating system. Gates and Allen didn’t invent the operating system. To meet IBM’s needs, they spent $50,000 to buy one known as QDOS from another programmer, Tim Paterson. Branson tweeted Monday: “So sad to hear about the passing of Paul Allen. Among many other things he was a pioneer of commercial space travel. We shared

a belief that by exploring space in new ways we can improve life on Earth.” When Allen released his 2011 memoir, “Idea Man,” he allowed 60 Minutes inside his home on Lake Washington, across the water from Seattle, revealing collections that included the guitar Jimi Hendrix played at Woodstock to vintage war planes and a 300-foot yacht with its own submarine. Allen served as Microsoft’s executive vice president of research and new product development until 1983, when he resigned after being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. “To be 30 years old and have that kind of shock - to face your mortality - really makes you feel like you should do some of the things that you haven’t done yet,” Allen said in a 2000 book, “Inside Out: Microsoft in Our Own Words.” Two weeks ago, Allen announced that the nonHodgkin’s lymphoma that he was treated for in 2009 had returned and he planned to fight it aggressively. “My brother was a remarkable individual on every level,” his sister Jody Allen said in a statement. “Paul’s family and friends were blessed to experience his wit, warmth, his generosity and deep concern,” she added. Allen never married or had children. His influence is firmly imprinted on the cultural landscape of Seattle and the Pacific Northwest, from the bright metallic Museum of Pop Culture designed by architect Frank Gehry to the computer science center at the University of Washington that bears his name. In 1988 at 35, he bought the Portland Trail Blazers professional basketball team. He told The Associated Press that “for a true fan of the game, this is a dream come true.” He also was a part owner of the Seattle Sounders FC, a major league soccer team, and bought the Seattle Seahawks. Allen could sometimes be seen at games or chatting in the locker room with players.

The unwilling blood donor In the UK in the 60s, as part of the diagnostic process, the registrars used to leave a list of the tests they wanted and it was the junior doctors who had to take the bloods for testing, leaving the kudos for finding abnormalities to those doctors higher up the ladder. I always thought this was a bit unfair, in the fact that I had no say in the blood tests to be ordered, and I was quite sure the registrar would secretly order difficult tests to make us junior doctors kow-tow to our medical superiors. It was only because we were working over 100 hours per week and were so tired that a revolt never occurred. One morning I came down to the wards where Sisters Underhill and Robinson ruled the roost. Make no mistake, the nurses were in charge, we might have shiny new name badges but our knowledge was inferior and our experience non-existent by comparison. It was in that background where I was in my first six months of clinical rotation. This was ‘Medical’ with Surgery coming for the second six months. This was not a bad system as newly graduated doctors need a lot of supervision in the early stages of their careers. In my own

case, I was quite sure I could diagnose the 7th Beta cell Adenoma of the pancreas ever found in the world, but I was not sure about tonsillitis! But back to Sisters Underhill and Robinson who happily gave me my list of ‘bloods’ for the morning. I was pleased to see it was only one patient, a Mr. Jackson, but I would need 5 mls of blood. With feigned confidence I strode to the designated bed number 12 and told Mr Jackson I was going to take some blood for testing. He did not reply, but then many patients just lie there. I found a reasonable vein on the back of his hand and slipped the needle inside. Some blood came out, but nowhere near the 5 mls required. I then used all the tricks known to extract blood from a recalcitrant vein. Gentle massage, tourniquet on and off, make the limb dependent and muttering under one’s breath. The reason I was trying so hard was the fact that if you couldn’t get enough blood you had to go and approach the surgeons and ask them to do a “cut down” where the surgeon makes an incision over the vein and the physician (me) can then introduce the needle under direct vision.

Senior surgeons do not take kindly to junior physicians upsetting their routine. It took some time, probably 20 minutes to half an hour, but I managed it. Five mls of Mr. Jackson’s precious blood was safely in my container. “You took your time,” said Underhill, but before I could explain, Robinson said “We knew you would have some difficulty with Mr. Jackson, as he died at around 7.15 this morning.” Looking back on it, I must admit to having become a little bit cocky. I had been Junior Houseman for all of two months and would try and show my knowledge in front of two highly experienced nurses. Mr. Jackson was my comeuppance and I found that by becoming a little deferential, life in the medical ward became a lot easier. In fact, if the sisters weren’t too busy they would often take the bloods for me, especially if they knew I had had an ‘allnighter’. The knowledge of Medicine comes not from the professors in the Hallowed Halls of academia, but from the practical knowledge gained at the bed-side, with an experienced nurse to guide you.

Implant, intense rehab help 3 paralyzed for years take steps Lauran Neergaard Washington (AP) - Three people whose legs were paralyzed for years can stand and take steps again thanks to an electrical implant that zaps the injured spinal cord - along with months of intense rehab, researchers reported Monday. The milestone, reported by two teams of scientists working separately, isn’t a cure. The patients walk only with assistance - holding onto a rolling walker or with other help to keep their balance. Switch off the spinal stimulator and they no longer can voluntarily move their legs. But during one physical therapy session at the Mayo Clinic, 29-year-old Jered Chinnock moved back and forth enough to cover about the length of a football field. “The walking side of it isn’t something where I just leave my wheelchair behind and away I go,” Chinnock, of Tomah, Wisconsin, told The Associated Press. But, “there is the hopeful side of, maybe I’ll gain that - where I can leave the wheelchair behind, even if it is to walk to the refrigerator.” The work is part of a quest to help people with spinal cord injuries regain function, and specialists say while it’s only been attempted in a few people, it’s a promising approach that needs more study. “I’m really excited about this,” said Johns Hopkins University rehabilitation expert Dr. Cristina Sadowsky, who wasn’t involved in the new research. It tapped into “residual connections that are not being used” after a spinal cord injury.

Jered Chinnock stands with the assistance of his therapy team at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., on Sept. 18, 2018. Chinnock, paralyzed since 2013, can stand and take steps again thanks to an electrical implant that zaps his injured spine and months of intense rehab as part of a medical study at the clinic. From left are Margaux Linde, Megan Gill, Chinnock, Daniel Veith and Jonathan Calvert. (AP Photo/Teresa Crawford)

Still, “not everybody who has a similar injury will respond the same,” cautioned Sadowsky, who directs spinal cord therapy at Baltimore’s Kennedy Krieger Institute. Severe spinal cord injuries leave the brain’s “get moving” instructions unable to reach the nerves that activate muscles. Researchers have tried other technologies, such as encasing patients in robotic-like exoskeletons or implanting muscle stimulators, to help move paralyzed limbs. With the new approach, the three patients are taking steps under their own power - intentionally moving, according to the reports published Monday by Nature Medicine and the New England Journal of Medicine. How does it work? One theory: Circuits of nerves below the injury site are dormant, but still living.

Applying electrical current, in customized patterns, could wake up some of those circuits and, with rigorous rehab to revive the rusty connections, eventually enable them to receive simple commands. “Recovery can happen if you have the right circumstances,” said University of Louisville professor Susan Harkema, who co-authored the New England Journal study. The spinal cord “relearns to do things, not as well as it did before, but it can function.” “This study gives hope to people who are faced with paralysis that functional control may be possible,” said Dr. Kendall Lee, a Mayo neurosurgeon who treated Chinnock and co-authored the Nature Medicine report. Four years ago, Harkema’s team made headlines when a few patients implanted with

spinal stimulators - originally developed to treat pain - were able to wiggle their toes, move their legs and briefly stand. But they didn’t walk. Lee and Kristin Zhao, who directs Mayo’s assistive and restorative laboratory, decided to repeat the experiment and Chinnock’s success surprised them. He’d been paralyzed in a 2013 snowmobile accident, with no movement or sensation below his mid-back. He underwent 43 weeks of intense physical therapy and stimulator adjustments. At first, trainers positioned his knees and hips to help him stand, swing his legs and shift his weight on a treadmill. But eventually, watching in a mirror, he learned to move his legs and propel himself forward with a walker, albeit with a trainer behind in case he loses his balance.

He can tell his therapists when he’s going to start, stop or speed up, Zhao said: “It’s very much a thoughtful, intentional movement.” Meanwhile in Louisville, Harkema’s team was working with four more paralyzed volunteers eager to test the approach - and this time, two eventually walked with assistance. In one training session in the lab, Jeff Marquis, 35, of Louisville made it almost the length of a football field without stopping for a rest. “One day we were walking and they were helping me as usual and then they stopped helping me and I took maybe three or four steps in sequence,” Kelly Thomas, 23, of Lecanto, Florida, recalled

in a video provided by Louisville researchers. “My eyes got teary and I was like, ‘Oh my god, that just happened, I just took steps.’” It’s not clear why the other two Louisville, Kentucky participants weren’t able to take independent steps. But that report illustrates an important caution about safety: One fractured a hip during a rehab treadmill exercise even while carefully supported and upright. The approach will need larger and longer studies not just to see if it can help other patients but to delineate risks. It’s also not known how much such care would cost, as researchers work to improve the stimulators.

Man wins woman’s weight in beer at wife-carrying contest Newry, Maine (AP) - Baseball’s fall classic focuses on an American pastime. A Maine ski resort has its own fall classic based on a Finnish tradition. More than 30 teams from Maine to California participated Saturday in the North American Wife Carrying Championship. The event at the Sunday River ski resort featured male competitors completing a 278yard obstacle course while carrying a woman. The legend behind the event is based on Finland’s “Ronkainen the Robber,” whose gang was known to pillage villages and take the women. Jesse Wall and Christine Arsenault won the event. For their efforts, the South Paris couple received Arsenault’s weight in beer, and five times her weight in cash. It was the second win for Wall and Arsenault, earning them another trip to participate in the world championship in Finland.

Swedish girl Saga pulls out pre-Viking era sword from lake Copenhagen, Denmark (AP) - Her name conjures up Old Nordic tales about heroic accomplishments and that’s exactly what Saga this summer did when she stumbled on a pre-Viking-era sword in a southern Sweden lake. Saga Vanecek, 8, was helping her father with his boat in the Vidostern Lake when she stepped on an 85-centimeter (34inch) sword in a holster made of wood and leather. The sword is believed to be about 1,500 years old. Mikael Nordstrom of the local Jonkoping County museum said Friday that the little girl’s find prompted others to seek out long-lost treasures in a lake that had been diminished by drought. A broach from between 300 to 400 A.D. was eventually found. Nordstrom said archaeologists are trying to understand why the items were there. For sacrificial purposes is one suggestion.

San Francisco has new ‘Snapcrap’ app to report dirty streets San Francisco (AP) - A newcomer to San Francisco has created a free app to make it easier for people to report poop and used needles on the city’s famously dirty streets. Sean Miller, 24, moved to San Francisco from Vermont after college last year and says he was astonished by the amount of public grime. His “Snapcrap” app was released over the weekend for iOS users and declares itself the “fastest way” to request cleaning in San Francisco. “See something gross? Just snap a photo and press submit,” the app’s description reads. The photos are passed to the city’s Public Works department, which has its own 311 app to report feces and trash, as well as potholes and graffiti. Miller, who lives and works downtown, says downloads have been in the “few hundreds.” San Francisco leaders have been grappling with the state of the city’s dirty streets. There were more than 24,300 requests last year for human waste cleanup. Miller says he’s adding features to the app and hopes to work with the city to improve a very San Francisco problem.

Tipsy birds flying into windows, cars in northern Minnesota Gilbert, Minn. (AP) - Police in a small northern Minnesota community have been taking some strange calls about birds that seem to be intoxicated. Citizens in Gilbert on the state’s Iron Range have reported the birds flying into windows, cars and acting confused. In a cheeky Facebook message, the police department says there’s an easy explanation: The birds are ingesting berries that have fermented earlier than usual this year because of an early frost. National Parks Service ranger Sharon Stiteler tells KMSP-TV that robins and waxwings feast on fruit such as crabapples, and that the sugar in those fruits can turn into alcohol as they lose moisture. Stiteler says “drunk birds are totally a thing.” The police department says there’s no need to panic, the birds will eventually sober up.

Using color for effect With so many photographers selecting Black and White as the medium to show their “art” it is pleasing to see people like Francis Giacobetti used and manipulated colour to produce striking images. And striking images is certainly what Giacobetti is all about. He was born in France in 1939 and was always a sensitive dreamer, as so many artistic Frenchmen are - even though he later took out American citizenship. An advertising photographer, he is, however, best remembered for his glamor pictures of women. Many of the stunning calendars are the work of Francis Giacobetti, and there are

many photographers throughout the world who have been envious of him (and of what he photographs)! To become a top glamour photographer takes time. No one rings you up and asks if you would like to shoot the next Pirelli calendar, for example. You slowly earn recognition. Giacobetti did his apprenticeship the hard way too, beginning as a photographer’s assistant at the Paris Match magazine and then graduating to become a news photographer. This was not his forte as he found that he did not want to take shots of important people just because they were visiting France. Reportage was not him - he was an image maker, so he left Paris Match. He was very fortunate that the glossy magazine “Lui” was launched in 1964, and he became a regular contributor. They allowed him to produce his colorful images to illustrate the chic and sometimes racy lifestyle

Dear Hillary, I’ve been with this girl for about three months and it was a no-hassle relationship. Now here’s my question, this is the first Thai I have had anything to do with, so this may be usual practice – I just don’t know. I give her money any time she asks, usually about 20-30K, but now she wants to share my bank account with her. As well, all her friends seem unable to hold their alcohol and every time she goes out with them, she comes back legless. Having a good time with friends is all she will say. I really don’t want to let her use my bank book, and the nights out with friends is now about 5 times a week. Horace Dear Horace, Are you in the woodworking business? You are as thick as two short planks. You are being used, my Petal, and it has taken you three months to realize this? Show her the door, change the locks and padlock the wardrobe. Of course, if you want to know what being broke is like, just carry on as you are. When the joint bank account is empty, she will go anyway. Dear Hillary, I have a high salary position here as the overseas representative, for a well known British company. I have met up with an absolutely gorgeous woman here and she, at my suggestion, has moved in. As I already have a wife in the UK (she didn’t want to come to Thailand), so I only see her for a couple of weeks twice a year. My superior in the company is coming over next month and I will have to entertain he and his wife and here’s my problem. My lady enjoys eating off the floor on food that is so hot it is nuclear. She

presented by “Lui”. Those of you who have seen copies of this publication will know what I mean. I used to have a subscription to it, just to keep up with the photographic trends in Europe.

Having made his name in this field, Giacobetti then began to gain the rewards, with other avant-garde magazines showcasing his talents. From there it really was to do the famous Pirelli

dresses rather provocatively, as do most Thai women, in my opinion. Neither of these two things would be acceptable for these upper class English folks. I haven’t told my lady as I am afraid she will get angry (she does have a strong temper at times). What do suggest is the best way round this problem? James Dear James, I say old chap, you have got yourself into a bit of bother, haven’t you. Got yourself a little popsicle from Isaan, and you have been able to gloss over her lack of table manners so far, while joining her in a few bottles of that dreadful local whisky and coke. And I expect that a few of her friends drop by after midnight when the bar is closed. What you are really asking me, is how do you quietly get Khun Popsicle to leave? Quite easily, my Petal, but it will cost you money, but I am sure that your high salary will cover it. Be up front and tell her that big important people are coming over and because you have a wife in the UK, and Popsicle will have to move out. Tell her three months and you will give her 50,000 baht a month, but she is not to leave anything behind that your superior’s wife will know belongs to a woman. Be prepared to haggle over the amount of the monthly salary, but she will go weak at the knees if it gets to B. 100,000. After they have returned to the UK you can look at rehiring K. Popsicle, or look at getting an Mk 2 model. With so much cash to splash around, you won’t be lonely for long.

calendar, with Giacobetti’s highly acclaimed photography featured in the 1970 edition. There are those photographers who are technocrats every new device is theirs and they use its features until another new effect catches their eye. Giacobetti was not one of those. He worked in simple 35 mm format, while everyone was calling for 6x6 medium format, using simple Contax cameras fitted with Zeiss lenses. He carried an assortment of filters, mainly graduated filters to deepen the skies in his outdoor shots and that is about it. For lighting, he prefers natural light, but uses its color shifts to heighten the effect in his photographs. For Giacobetti, technique was merely a means to an end. He was very talented at conjuring up how the photo should look in his mind’s eye and then using simple techniques to produce that image.

Banks of electronic flash heads are not his style - but bright sunlight and a polarizing filter was. And through it all, Giacobetti produced images that are truly larger than life. Everything is bright and chromium plated. Dramatic and brash, just like the photograph reproduced with this article. The black skin and the impossibly red tongue (pity the column is in B&W) is such a contrast, it brings the eye back to the image. Giacobetti’s story illustrates the need to think creatively when going to take photographs. The secret is in the thinking - not in the taking. Sit and reflect just how you want to portray the subject matter and then work through from there. You never know, Pirelli might even ring you for their next calendar - if you show the right amount of original thought. Think about it - and then go out and shoot it. Just like Francis Giacobetti.

Dear Hillary, I read in your column it’s always the newbie or nearly newbies who get themselves in emotional / financial trouble. Us old timers are pretty well set, if we don’t know by now there is no helping us, nor are we seeking help. But not to invade on your turf - if I could be of any assistance please contact me. Take Care, Jester Dear Jester, Aren’t you the kindest chap, with an offer of being Hillary’s little helper. It is nice to know there are settled “old timers” as you called yourself, ready, willing and able to step in at a moment’s notice. However, Petal, I think the readers out there are looking for the Thai female psyche, as they don’t understand what their long term partner of two days is thinking. I would also be somewhat embarrassed if you went out on some sort of vigilante exercise, I don’t think the editor would like that. Then there is another problem, and it’s not your salary as Hillary’s assistant, because there isn’t any, it’s where are we going to put you? The editorial desk is not very large, and just fits into my attic with me. If I have a good meal at lunchtime, I can’t get in until after three in the afternoon! In the days when we used to get real paper letters I had to open the envelopes outside as there wasn’t enough room to swing the proverbial cat. They won’t hold the paper knife securely either, and I could be injured. Not that I have anything against cats, you must know.

ISC students ready for some beach cleaning action on Koh Sak.

Alexander McInnes Students from ISC, recently had the opportunity to participate in one of Mermaid Dive Center’s International Beach Clean Up days on Koh Sak. They are held 3 times a year with students and staff from local and Bangkok international schools. Other community members and friends of

Mermaids also join the event. Boats left from Bali Hai Pier after registration, and delicious egg and bacon rolls back at Mermaids. At the island, students were shuttled by speed boat to the beach. With gloves on, bags in hand and mindful of instructions, the children set off. Shouts of, “Glass!” echoed around the beach so we knew that the instructions

were being followed. The weather only allowed us an hour. However, in that time, over 270 kg of rubbish was collected from the sea and beach! After a very satisfying lunch back on board, it was time for snorkeling. As the tide was coming in, the children got to see the amount of rubbish thrown off boats that was heading for our clean beach. Snorkelers grabbed up what they could. Throughout the day, Mermaids staff impressed everyone with their focus on safety and the environment. Our children went home, eager to go on the next beach cleanup. Most importantly, they understood that many people, joining together, can make a difference and that individually they have a role to play.

Important victory for Asia’s elephants paves Ratchaburi unveils the way for increased protection two new attractions Vicky Flynn, Head of Communications, Elephant Family Governments Oct. 3 expressed overwhelming support to strengthen international laws that will help protect endangered Asian elephants. The move comes following undercover investigation work carried out by UK charity Elephant Family that exposed an emerging illegal trade in Asian elephant skin. Alarmed by the discovery of skinned elephant carcasses in Myanmar, Elephant Family found that the skin is being turned into beads for jewelry and powder to treat medical conditions and sold online through Chinese language forums. The sharing of their findings helped secure a much needed strengthening of the laws that protect Asia’s endangered elephants. Working together, Born Free Foundation and Elephant Family informed delegates at a meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES*) in Sochi, Russia of the skin trade and pushed for more urgent attention to tackle the trafficking.

Representatives of two Asian elephant range states - Sri Lanka and Thailand expressed concern over the emerging threat. Speaking for Sri Lanka, which will host the CITES Conference of Parties in 2019, Mr Ranjan Marasinghe, Head of Enforcement of the Department of Wildlife Conservation said, “As a range state we are aware of the

forward to supporting countries to address those needs and ensure a sustained enforcement response against illegal trade.” Justin Gosling, a law enforcement specialist working with Elephant Family urged caution over the result, “Trade in Asian elephants has been prohibited under CITES for over 40 years, but poaching and trafficking continues and is expanding. Countries implicated in this trade now need to make concerted efforts to investigate the criminal networks and take action to prevent further poaching and trade.” Heads of State from around the world are meeting at the Illegal Wildlife Trade Conference in London. Elephant Family is there to continue to garner further support for Asian elephants. *CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) is an international agreement between governments. Its aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival.

Bringing international TV to Expats around the world

Spencer Sharpe describes his online platform that gathers various pages from the Internet and puts them in one place providing easy access.

The speaker at the October 7, 2018 meeting of the Pattaya City Expats Club was Spencer Sharpe on the topic of “How I am changing the internet (and bringing international TV to Expats around the world)”. Spencer is a 57-year-old Englishman who has lived in Thailand for seven years. He has been in business and entrepreneurship since his early 20’s, starting in the fashion industry. He diversified, launching branded products in the toiletries sector. He saw a market twenty years ago for exporting used mobile phones into South Africa and eventually became a major international trader and distributor of mobiles and associated hardware. Spencer followed by developing and launching his own successful satnav and security products for the private and governmental sectors.

He mentioned that though he came to Pattaya to retire, his creative desires resurfaced a few years ago when he conceived setting up an online marketing website, which he named iTS COOLER. He began his presentation by linking his computer screen to the meeting room video screens and showing his marketing website. He said he was doing this to show his initial effort as background as he would be talking about his second website, iTS COOLER PLUS. This website was conceived, developed and launched in Pattaya - one website, one page, bringing TV, Social Media, YouTube, News, Browser and more to users worldwide. He referred to this website as being a “gatherer” site – a place to have one page that allows you to view all your social media here in one place. But, there is much

You can color code your feeds for easy identification as well as drag and drop your feeds to reorder them to suit you. In addition, his platform will offer Expats the ability to watch international TV from around the world. Spencer said they currently have UKTV available. Further, in January 2019, he plans to have connections for US, French, German, and Filipino TV, with others to follow. He mentioned that registering on his website will allow one month free viewing from these online international TV services including Digital Video Recording (DVR) so that favorite programs or events can be recorded and

FRIDAY OCTOBER 19, 2018 15

Something in the air

A portrait of Charles Ives on a 1997 postage stamp.

Almost every afternoon I go down to our local market to buy food for the dogs and a small supply of jasmine rice. A country market in these parts would not be complete without background music although considering the volume at which it’s delivered “background” is not the first word that springs to mind. In our market there are three loudspeakers mounted on poles in different areas and they relentlessly belt out continuous and unrelated music. Two of them play Thai pop and a third plays selections of Isaan songs you were hoping never to hear again. I have no idea who is responsible and I’ve never felt compelled to follow the various cables to establish their source.

The other day, purely out of casual curiosity, I wandered about the market to try and find the exact spot where the sounds from each loudspeaker appeared to be the same volume. I found a convenient space near a stall where an owl-like woman was presiding over a large table of assorted plastic widgets, the purpose of which was not immediately obvious. In this position the three loudspeakers were equally balanced in volume. The curious experience of simultaneously hearing three unrelated songs reminded me of Charles Ives, whose birthday would have been this weekend. He would have probably relished my experience at the market. Ives was born in Danbury, Connecticut where his father

was a bandmaster. After a stint at Yale University the young Charles became one of the first American composers to engage in daring musical experiments which included using different keys at the same time, distorted rhythms, clusters of notes played together and elements of chance. Unfortunately all this proved too much of a challenge for most people and his music was generally ignored during his lifetime, largely on account of the relentless dissonance. Most of his music was composed before 1927 after which he felt, for reasons that have never really been discovered, that he could not compose anymore. For the rest of life he remained musically silent.

Charles Ives (18741954): Three Places in New England. Ensemble Intercontemporain, dir. Matthias Pintscher (Duration: 21:54; Video: 1080p HD) Today Charles Ives is recognized as “the grandfather of American music”. Leonard Bernstein recognized his genius and in 1951 conducted the premiere of the Second Symphony, an event

which started to put Ives’ name on the musical map. Ives was virtually selftaught and drew freely on American popular melodies, church music, patriotic tunes and marches, combining them in remarkable ways. His incredibly creative mind foreshadowed many of the innovations of the twentieth century. Three Places in New England was completed in 1914 and it’s one of his most popular orchestral works, containing many key features of his personal musical style. The first movement is a haunting reflective piece; a memorial to the 54th Massachusetts Regiment many of whose members lost their lives during the Civil War. Ives creates a bleak soundworld in which out-of-focus shapes seem to drift across a dark, arid landscape. In contrast, the second movement Puttnam’s Camp (09:46) is enlivened with clashing harmonies and varying pulses combined to create the sound of community marching bands playing simultaneously. You’ll probably recognize some of the melodic fragments. The last movement opens with opulent and passionate harmonies which become increasingly

Eric Idle on Monty Python, life’s brighter side Michael Hill Eric Idle has been funny for a very long time. He gained fame almost 50 years ago playing pompous TV hosts and leering idiots as a member of the Monty Python comedy troupe. While the original BBC TV show ran for only four seasons, it spawned a bunch of live shows and several movies, including “Life of Brian,” which ended with Idle on a crucifix singing “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.” He reprised the tune at the 2012 London Olympics and featured it in his Broadway hit “Spamalot.” There are a few laughs in this book, billed as a “sortabiography,” but it mostly reads like a casual memoir of someone who still can’t quite believe his good fortune. Idle is one of those funny people who had a miserable childhood. His father survived World War II in the Royal Air Force only to die in a traffic accident as he was coming home for Christmas in 1945. The boy was eventually packed off by his overwhelmed mother to an orphanage, or “Ophny” as residents called it. He made it into Cambridge University and — more significantly — into its performing Footlights club, which was a springboard to British stage and TV shows. In 1969, the BBC rounded up some other bright young

performers for a sketch show so undefined it didn’t even have a name. Idle, John Cleese, Michael Palin, Graham Chapman, Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam toyed with names like “Toad Elevating Moment” and “Whither Canada?” before settling on “Monty Python’s Flying Circus.” “We didn’t know what we were doing and insisted on doing it,” Idle writes. The show — a mix of absurdity, whimsy and high-brow humor— had evolved from British comedy before it, but it was a revelation when it crossed to the United States. Readers looking for firsthand insights into the inner workings of that landmark show will be disappointed. They might even wonder if some of the book’s pages stuck together, since Idle barely touches on how the group of outsized personalities managed to create so much lasting comedy. A lot of the book is consumed with the many famous and fabulous people he hung out with, among them George Harrison and David Bowie. And a lot of pages are devoted to recounting his high-profile performances of “Bright Side.” It gets repetitious. But Idle can be insightful. His chapter about his relationship with the late comedian Robin Williams is especially poignant. But the chapter highlights how the book is most interesting when Idle writes about what he noticed instead of listing what he did. (AP)

strident before the works suddenly closes in almost total silence.

Geirr Tveitt (19081981): Piano Concerto No 4 “Northern Lights”. Donna Amato (pno), Musica Nova Orchestra cond. Warren Cohen (Duration: 12:26 (1st mvt); Video: 1080p HD) The Norwegian composer and pianist Geirr Tveitt (GAYR TVAYT) took a passionate interest in his country’s folk music and his birthday would have been this weekend too. His music draws on the barbaric style of Stravinsky’s early ballets, the rhythms and textures of Bartók’s music and the mystic qualities in the music of Debussy. His work was influenced Norwegian folk-music but by the 1950s anything that smacked of nationalism had become somewhat passé in Norway. After years of international success, Tveitt’s music fell out of fashion and he

became increasingly disenchanted, spending much of his time at the old family farm house with his unpublished manuscripts: five piano concertos, two violin concertos an opera, a couple of symphonies and a vast collection of folk-song arrangements. The music was filed in wooden boxes and it was a disaster waiting to happen. In 1970 the farm house burned to the ground, along with three hundred of Tveitt’s musical compositions. Tveitt was unscathed but eighty percent of his life’s work was lost forever. The Fourth Piano Concerto has been reconstructed from the orchestral parts and recordings. The first movement was inspired by the aurora borealis and it’s a splendid, magical work with reflections of Debussy and Bartók and a gorgeously rhythmic second movement. Even so, I can’t help wondering what other remarkable music was lost to the world in that catastrophic fire.

‘Venom,’ with Tom Hardy, is a manic muddle Jake Coyle Los Angeles (AP) - “Venom,” starring Tom Hardy as a TV investigative journalist whose body is invaded by an alien organism, is a destabilizing mix of intentional and unintentional comedy that for better and worse returns the superhero movie to its natural state: camp. What makes Ruben Fleischer’s first installment in the Sony universe of Marvel characters such an oddity is that it seems perpetually unsure of just how far it wants to teeter into ridiculousness. It’s an incoherent mess of tones, acting styles and visual effects. And yet it’s kind of a hoot. Having that feeling of “What the hell is this thing?” is an underrated quality in movies — good or bad ones — and it’s even more captivating when the movie, itself, seems to have thrown up its hands in exasperation. Having often been critical of the frequently formulaic filmmaking of Marvel movies, it

would be disingenuous of me to not appreciate the more freewheeling and slapdash jumble of “Venom.” It’s not every movie that tries, however awkwardly, to marry ghoulish body horror with a goofball buddy comedy that happens to take place in the same body. These are the sorts of things we did in the ’80s. Hardy plays Eddie Brock, a motorcycling San Francisco reporter who loses his lawyer fiancée (Michelle Williams, lending warmth and depth to every scene) when he steals a tip from her work email. His expose of a powerful industrialist with maniacal aspirations for saving humanity, Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed, who had more benevolent plans for humanity’s rescue in “The Sisters Brothers”), goes up in flames, and he’s sent packing. But a whistleblower in Drake’s lab contacts Brock and brings him in to reveal what’s going on: Drake has obtained an extraterrestrial parasite — a gummy, writhing black blob — and he’s conducting human trials with it. The potential scientific benefit of this is a little iffy, but in practice, it means one person after

This image released by Sony Pictures shows a scene from “Venom.” (Sony Pictures via AP)

another is led into a chamber where the organism takes over their body and quickly kills it. Just as in the “Spider-Man” comics, from which Venom originates, the movie is predicated on what can go wrong in a lab. (Topher Grace played Venom in 2007’s “Spider-Man 3.”) Brock proves a surprisingly good host for the alien creature which turns out to be much more sentient than your average

blob. From inside Brock, it can not only form a slimy black exoskeleton and in a flash spawn spindly appendages. It can also in a deep growl tell Brock “Hungry!” ‘’Let’s eat his brains!” or, when in a less violent mood, dispatch relationship advice. Brock and Venom turn out to be quite compatible and one of the odder Dr. Jekyll and Hyde routines you’re likely to see. Venom plays puppeteer with Brock, who

at first is mystified at what’s happening to him. That Venom is such an icky, cartoonish figure — when engulfing Brock, it has fangs, a long, serpentine tongue and mask-like white eyes — makes their genuinely humorous banter all the stranger. Fleischer (“Gangster Squad,” ‘’Zombieland”) keeps his film moving, so the sheer preposterousness of the ride can prompt double takes. Did Tom Hardy really just plop himself into a lobster tank? Did two back-to-back scenes really just end with someone saying “Have a nice life”? Did that guy just seriously exclaim: “He’s achieved symbiosis!”? “Venom” never achieves symbiosis, or anything like it. But the film’s off-kilter schizophrenia gives it a madcap appeal. While Fleischer seems to have a darker, moodier film in mind, Hardy

has the good sense to steer “Venom” in a more over-thetop direction, even if the movie around him can’t catch up. In a way, this is a more naked performance for Hardy, whose transformations have often been cloaked in more obscuring masks (“Dunkirk,” ‘’Mad Max,” ‘’The Dark Knight Rises”) or more elaborate accents (“The Drop,” ‘’Lawless”). I’m not sure his twitchy, spasmodic performance — bug-eyed and unevenly accented — adds up to anything in “Venom.” But it’s something to behold. Train wrecks like these aren’t supposed to be this entertaining. “Venom,” a Sony Pictures release, is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and for language. Running time: 112 minutes. Two stars out of four.

PATTAYA MAIL

Whitesnake: ‘Slip of the Tongue’ mott@pattayamail.com Whitesnake can quite rightly claim to have released one of the last great rock albums of the Eighties, as it was unleashed on the general public in November 1989 after a long and difficult recording period. “Slip of the Tongue”, the band’s sixth full studio album was the follow up to the mega-selling “1987” from two years previously, and although the line-up that recorded that album had been shed, the touring members had pretty much been kept together, with just the loss of Vivian Campbell to musical differences. The majority of the songwriting was shouldered by Adrian Vandenberg and David Coverdale, but Vandenberg suffered a serious wrist accident before recording could begin and after a significant wait for the errant wrist to get better, it was decided that time was of the essence and a new

guitarist would have to be found for recording. Coverdale had never met Steve Vai before or even heard much of his playing, but he had seen him playing the Devil’s guitarist in the climax to the film “Crossroads” (1986). Suitably impressed, he employed him on the spot and what a wonderful edition to Whitesnake he proved to be. Vai had to record some of his parts for this album from his own studio due to finishing up earlier commitments, but when he went full time with Whitesnake and hit the stage, he was IT. The Devil’s guitar player was all flash and thunder.

Of course the duo of Rudy Sarzo and Tommy Aldridge were more than up for their parts as the rhythm section, and while all the guitar playing is credited to Steve Vai, Vandenberg is still credited as being a part of the band.

David Coverdale.

The album was a great hit, selling over a million copies and spawning 3 hit singles (2 top 5’s in the case of “Fool for Your Loving” and “The Deeper Your Love”.) The first of these, “Fool for Your Loving” was actually an old Whitesnake song, originally released on the “Ready’n’Willing” album in 1980 and written by the band’s British guitarists Bernie Marsden, Mickey Moody and the everpresent Coverdale. It was a trick they’d used on their previous album and it meant

some nice copyright payments for Marsden and Moody. Of course all three hit songs off “Slip of the Tongue” came with very watchable videos, which were on heavy rotation on MTV and featured fast cars and the very curvy Tawny Kitaen (shortly to become Mrs. Coverdale.) The album opens up in true

Eighties rock style with a steady beat, innuendo, gritty riffs and shredding guitar solos. Keyboards are very much kept to the background and Coverdale’s roar is at the very pinnacle of every song. By the time it came to take Whitesnake out on their biggest ever tour, Vandenberg was fit and the band were

firing on all six. The tour took them all over the world, including playing Monsters of Rock at Donington Park in the UK to headline over Aerosmith. The tour was split into two parts, allowing Whitesnake to play just about every major stadium on the planet. David Coverdale had not done too bad for a man who was selling shirts in 1972 and playing in cover bands in his spare time. Mott the Dog Rating: 5 Stars. Once vowing not to record anymore, Elvis Costello is back David Bauder New York (AP) — Besides the fact that he’s still here, Elvis Costello’s fans can be grateful that he’s open to changing his mind. While something short of a vow, Costello said in 2010 that he didn’t plan to record anymore. Yet this month he releases “Look Now,” his second disc since that declaration. The lush showcase for his backing band, the Imposters, is musically inspired by Dusty Springfield’s “Dusty in Memphis” and has a renewed collaboration with Burt Bacharach at its heart. That Costello, 64, is around to talk about it is because he was treated for what was described as a small, but aggressive form of cancer earlier this year. The world learned about it, somewhat to his regret, when he had to cancel some concerts. The changing music business had taught Costello, like other older artists, that there was a diminishing return to recording. “I didn’t feel like I could justify the vanity of making records, compared to making my living with what I do most of the time, which is do shows,” he told The Associated Press. “Up until that point, it had always been

that (recording and touring) were connected, and it was just finding a way to disconnect them again.” Thus began his “impresario years.” He’s had a handful of themed concert tours, including one focusing on the period around his “Imperial Bedroom” album and another accompanied by a game show-like “spinning songbook” that determined the evening’s set list. He didn’t stop writing, however, much of it aimed toward theater. He and the 90-year-old Bacharach, with

whom he made the 1998 record, “Painted From Memory,” are working on a stage show. While waiting for that to progress, longtime drummer Pete Thomas encouraged Costello to record some of the new material that had backed up. Costello recognized that his three-piece band had never really shown its range on a single CD, and concentrated on the garage band side of his diverse catalogue while in concert. The work on “Look Now” is ballad-heavy and lightly

soulful, with plenty of space for the rhythm section of Thomas and Davey Faragher, the keyboards of Steve Nieve, orchestration and backing vocals. This was his original idea for a follow-up to “Painted From Memory” years ago, although Costello didn’t get to it. He said it benefits from the extra time and experience. “Do we sound like we’re old?” he said. “No, we sound like we know what we’re doing and are alert to the possibilities. We could play it a lot of ways but we decided to play it like this.” “Look Now” had been delayed for release after an agreement with one record company fell through. Costello notes ruefully in an essay that he couldn’t shake the thought that “such minds had determined my value long ago and might wait out the windfall should I become a posthumous artist, although that was a career opportunity I was unprepared to pursue just now.” Fans were shaken by the thought that might come sooner rather than later when they heard of his cancer scare. He had tried to push through with concert dates, despite a doctor’s advice, and found he wasn’t

physically ready. Cancelling the shows required an explanation, but Costello winces at how it escaped his control. Unfounded speculation that he was at death’s door upset his family.

“I had some very nice messages from people I’ve never met or saw on the street saying very nice things about me,” he said. “And, of course, there are one or two who say, ‘I never liked him anyway, I hope he dies.’”

Participants dressed in white paraded from the foundation to the Naklua New Market and Lan Po Public Park before returning to eat. Free vegetarian meals were served three times a day through Oct. 18. As usual, vegetable prices in Pattaya spiked, although traders blamed it on flooding upcountry that caused supply shortages, not the desire to gouge people during the annual festival. Even with higher prices, sales remained brisk. The event is even fun for the performers. (Below) The ceremony to invite Nine Emperor Gods and Bodhisattva is a solemn occasion.

Copeland doubles up PSC Golf Pattaya Links Golf Society Monday, Oct. 8, Laem Chabang – Stableford A Flight 1st Paul Durkan (7) 38pts 2nd Gerry Raftery (15) 36pts 3rd Joerge Mueller (12) 35pts 4th Chris Barker (13) 35pts B Flight 1st Bill Copeland (16) 40pts 2nd Darren Beavers (20) 33pts 3rd Stuart Thompson (17) 32pts 4th Dave Arataki (28) 31pts All good things must come to an end, as so today Pattaya Links Golf played our last game at Laem Chabang, at least for now. The great special price offered PSC golfers has lasted many weeks longer than the original advertising flyer quoted. The one thing no golf course can control is the weather and so, having had rain as recently as 6 am this morning, the fairways were quite soft and boggy in places, and of course, with no run seemed much longer than the 6,287 yds off the white tees. With carts staying on paths only, once again a lot of walking to be done, and we

played lift, clean and place through the green. Bill Copeland starred in the finale with a very big 40 points on a tough day to take out “B” flight (16+) and the Green Jacket. One of the important things in his armament is his consistently good putting. Darren Beavers won the Jacket here last week and continued that form scoring 33 points to take second place from Stu Thompson on 32 points, while DaveArataki with 31 points rounded out the flight. The “A” flight (0-15) saw Paul Durkan improve on his 36 points from last week to make it 38 today for the win, leading in Gerry Raftery on 36. Joerge Mueller and Chris Barker went to countback on 35 points with Joerge having the better back nine. Near pins went to Stu Thompson (B5), Paul Durkan (B8) and (C5), Alex Sala (C8)

Wednesday, Oct. 10, Burapha A & B Stableford A Flight 1st Gerry Raftery (15) 36pts

Bill Copeland (centre) with Tony Browne (left) and Tommy Marshall.

2nd Chris Barker (13) 36pts 3rd Mitchell Carlon (9) 35pts 4th George Muller (12) 35pts B Flight 1st Bill Copeland (16) 40pts 2nd Derek Phillips (18) 37pts 3rd Chris Herve (17) 35pts 4th Guy Stewart (16) 35pts On Wednesday three dozen golfers visited the sumptuous Burapha to play a stableford competition on the A and B nines. A clear but humid day found a course heavily saturated by recent rains and the

B nine in particular was quite spongy underfoot, and the restriction on golf cart use meant a lot of tough walking for those normally driven around the course. The field was divided into two flights at fifteen and under and in the top flight fourth place went to German golfer George Muller with a steady 35 points, losing on countback to Mitchell Carlon in third. Second place went to Chris Barker, and the winner was Irish golfer Gerry

Raftery with 36 points on his final round this trip. In the second flight the minor places were decided on countback with Chris Herve taking third (35) ahead of Guy Stewart in fourth. Darren Beavers also had 35 points but lost all the countbacks. Second place went to Derek Phillips who put together a fine round of 37 points. However the flight was won by Bill Copeland after his second successive round of forty points this week and he wore the green jacket with a broad smile. Near pins were won by Pete Seil (A3), Darren Beavers (A6), Adam Barton and Derek Phillips whilst the consolation of the best nines went to Mike Firkin (front nine, 23 points) and Dave Arataki (back nine, 21 points).

Friday, Oct. 12, Pattana B & C Stableford A Flight 1st Maurice Roberts (14) 39pts 2nd Phil Davies (11) 37pts 3rd Adrian Pethick (4) 36pts 4th Michael Lohse (3) 34pts

B Flight 1st Wayne Peppernell (16) 36pts 2nd Bill Copeland (16) 36pts 3rd Jim Ferris (21) 33pts 4th Claudio Grossi (16) 31pts After not playing or not completing rounds a few times recently, Maurice came roaring back to his best with a Green Jacket winning score of 39 points on a difficult course. Phil Davies has rediscovered some form to march into second spot with a very good 37 points, then came newcomer to Links, Adrian Pethick, on 36 points, while Michael Lohse won all the countbacks for fourth with 34 points. B flight at last saw Wayne Peppernell smiling again after scoring 36 points to edge out the in-form Bill Copeland in another countback. Jim Ferris is going OK of late and held third place with 33 points while Claudio Grossi filled fourth spot on 31 points. Near Pins went to Tony Browne (B3), Paul Durkan (B7) Maurice Roberts (C2), Chris Barker (C7)

Lee cuts loose at Burapha Traveller’s Rest Golf Group Monday, Oct. 8, The Emerald Stableford 1st Billy Allan (19) 36pts 2nd Mike Rushant (12) 33pts 3rd John Baxter (12) 33pts We started the week at Emerald where “Peaky Blinder” Billy Allan continued his winning streak. With two scalps already under his belt from last week he added another one today with a respectable 36 points. “Peaky” is not one to brag about his victories and many people may think that this is due to his humility, but we know the real reason and that’s if his missus finds out then she will take half, if not all the winnings.

Tuesday, Oct. 9, Phoenix Gold – Stableford 1st Derek Thorogood (18) 39pts 2nd Roger Wilkinson (14) 36pts

3rd Alan Murray (12) 34pts Today at Phoenix was the first time in over ten weeks where the scribe completed eighteen holes without having one shank! With so many people offering advice on how to cure the dreaded affliction it just wouldn’t go away, so much so that he was at the point of calling it a day and taking up lawn bowls. But not anymore, having completed nine holes without a shank he started to find the sweet spot and posted five pars and one birdie on the back-nine, picking up another twenty four points and finished the day a very relieved man.

Wednesday, Oct. 10, Khao Kheow Stableford 1st Mike Rushant (12) 40pts 2nd Ho Jun-Yoon (21) 37pts 3rd Ron Hulen (14) 33pts

Lawrence Lee.

Mike Rushant.

Mike “The Machine” Rushant is back in town to escape the Canadian winter and who would blame him with forecasts of -40 degrees. Mike hit the ground running with a magnificent 40 points on Khao Kheow’s A & C courses. Mike is probably the only TRGG contender to have any chance of upsetting the current Player of the Year leader

(Colin Smith) who has lost a bit of form lately which might be due to a couple of late nights at the TRGG bar.

Thursday, Oct. 11, Pattana – Stableford 1st Neil Wilkinson (14) 36pts 2 nd Chu Yong-Park (30) 33pts 3rd Graeme Gamble (13) 33pts On Thursday we took on Pattana. Now most of us

would like to play A or C first so as to warm up before hitting off the B course, which has one of the most intimidating tee boxes in Pattaya. The runway as it is affectionately described has water left and right which today claimed twelve out of twenty three tee shots. Neil Wilkinson, not a man easily intimidated, cruised around the front-nine and posted a very respectable nineteen points, however he wavered a bit on the back nine scoring only one point in the first three holes but came back strongly with a birdie and a succession of pars to finish the day with 36 points and took first place on the podium.

Friday, Oct. 12, Burapha Stableford 1st Lawrence Lee (28) 40pts 2nd Paul West (12) 34pts 3rd Daniel Willits (12) 34pts Lawrence Lee has been a

member of the TRGG since 2012 and in all those years has never scored anywhere near 40 points, but today was his day and he finally became a member of the exclusive forty-pointer club. With nineteen on the front and twenty one on the back he left the rest of the field trailing in his wake, with his closest rival six shots behind.

Saturday, Oct. 13, Plutaluang – Stableford 1st Kim Young-Seok (18) 34pts 2nd Ron Hulen (14) 34pts 3rd Shin Dong-Min (36) 32pts We closed the week out at Plutaluang where we had a large contingent of players from Korea, and believe me there names are certainly not easy to pronounce. Kim Young-Seok (pronounced Kim Yun-Sock) took out the first prize with a score of 34 points.

FRIDAY OCTOBER 19, 2018 25

PATTAYA MAIL

Godfrey takes control at Khao Kheow The Jomtien Golf Society Monday, Oct. 8, Khao Kheow Stableford Yet again the forecast here was not too promising but in the end we had four groups of four going out today. We were playing the A and C nines with the cut at 10-17 and 18 plus off the yellow tees. Steve Godfrey, with a birdie on the fourth for four points and an eagle on the eighth for five points, came in with 20 points on the front nine and won division 1 with 39 overall. Nik Evans scored 21 on the front nine and took second with 37 points and Marc Brunner was third with 35. John Carlin beat peter Davies on an 18/15 countback after they both came in with 33 points in division 2 and Ken Miller edged Frank Grainger 19/12 on the back nine to take third place with 31 points on both cards. We were lucky with the weather yet again, but pick, clean and place was implemented on the first tee as

there were no buggies on the fairway today only the cart path. Near pins went to (Div 1) Nik Evans, Steve Godfrey, Tim Hake and Pete Sumner, and (Div 2) John Carlin, Frank Grainger, Ray Hucknall and Paul Young. Nik Evans birdied A3 in the ‘2’s and in division 2 there was a rollover to Pattavia on Wednesday.

Wednesday, Oct. 10, Pattavia - Stableford The first group out today had the pick, clean and place flag but it was not needed as buggies were allowed on the fairway and the first couple of holes were in reasonable condition and quite dry. Off the white tees today at 6650 yards and not a lot of run on the fairways it was a tough test of golf out there and 35 points was the highest score in the two divisions. Frank Grainger won division 2 with that score while John Carlin beat Peter Davies on a 19/18 countback after they both came in with 34 points.

Tuesday, Oct. 9, The Emerald Stableford

Thursday, Oct. 11, Treasure Hill Stableford

Tuesday we went to Emerald and were happy to see Dave Smith after his long stay in Europe. It was a beautiful sunny morning after the heavy rain of the night before. The course was in reasonable condition, but was still wet after all the rain, nevertheless we had good results. Jonathan Pratt played steady and won with 39 points while in second was Sam Gettinby with 37, beating Dave Smith on the countback. The near pins went to Willem Lasonder, Jonathan Pratt, Paddy Devereux and Stan Rees.

Treasure Hill was our venue for Thursday and the course was in good condition and not as wet as Tuesday. It was again a nice sunny day with a cool breeze. This course is not easy and that meant no high scores. After a modest start, Willem Lasonder had a good backnine and won with 37 points. In second was Jonathan Pratt with 32 points, beating Brett Gale on the countback. The near pins were claimed by Jonathan Pratt, Willem Lasonder and Paddy Devereux.

Tim Hake.

In division 1 Tim Hake beat Paul Young 18/16 on the back nine after two cards of 32 points came in and Paul Butler was third with 30 points. Near pins were claimed by (Div 1) Tim Hake, Bob Poole and Pete Sumner, and (Div 2) Peter Davies, Steve Harris and Bill Kana.

John Carlin.

In the ‘2’s today Bob Poole birdied the 13th and in division 1 two more rollovers to next week.

Friday, Oct. 12, Eastern Star Stableford

today with the equal cut at 10-18.3 and 18.4 plus. Heavy rain here overnight and although buggies were allowed on the fairways we still decided to employ ‘pick

clean and place’ for the round. There were some wicked pin placements here today and with the majority of the greens very slick. Frank Kelly won division 1 with 33 points while Per Forsberg took second one point behind. There were two 30pointers fighting for third and Nik Evans beat Paul Butler after a 15/15 back nine countback and 10/9 on the back six. In division 2 Glyn Evans beat Tony Thorne on a 15/ 14 back nine countback after they both came in with 31 points, John Carlin was third five points behind and Peter Davies took fourth with a ‘stunning’ 24 points. Near pins went to (Div 1) Steve Godfrey, Tim Hake, Dennis Scougall and Pete Sumner, and (Div 2) Peter Davies and Frank Kelly. No ‘2’s in either division today.

The numbers are starting to rise and there were four places in the two divisions

Stewart stars at Pattavia PSC Golf from the Tropical Golf Group Tuesday, Oct. 9, Greenwood Stableford With our monthly visit to one of the groups favorite venues on tap and a better than average chance any rain would happen late in the day, the group headed out of BJ’s Holiday Lodge to test once again the challenges of the “A & C” layout at Greenwood from the 6479 yard, white tees. On arrival and learning that due to daily rains, carts were limited to the paths only, once again it was “Lift, Clean & Place” through the green for the competition. This was a great decision as the course was extremely soggy and more than a few spent their full 5 minutes searching for plugged balls. It was noted however that the nearer the center of the fairway one was, the dryer the ground conditions were. All set up for those that strike the ball well and keep it straight down the middle. Other than the soggy fairways, the bunkers were well prepared and the greens running true but a bit slower than usual for Greenwood, so overall an above average presentation. With a reasonable pace of play what with the cart rules and preferred lies, the groups were finished in good order and headed back to Pattaya and

BJ’s for the presentation. With no rain falling during the round, playing off USGA Course Handicaps under “L,C,&P” rules on a wet but well maintained course, one would expect good scoring and the Tropical Golfers were up to the task. Leading the way was Barry Elphick (c/h 31) with 40 points! Following that fine performance was Dick Warberg (25) taking second with 38 points, Mick Coghlan (24) third with 37 and Andre Van Dyk (19) in fourth with 36. The Best 9-hole scores went to Alan Sullivan and John Davis.

the fairway stretched out before us looked fantastic. However the first group was sent off with instruction to signal back if, after getting to their drives and checking the fairway conditions in the landing area, the “safe” signal came back so it was “play it as it lies”. The course actually turned out to be on the dry side if anything, with areas of hardpan showing up when a bit off the fairway. The fairways however were well grassed so good lies were available as long as one was reasonable straight. In addition the course had performed some much needed maintenance in the bunkers and there was a cushion of sand rather than the packed down, gravely bunkers found on our previous visits. Finally, Pattavia’s famous greens were at their usual “testing” best, quick downhill and plenty of break needed putting across the

slopes. All set up for a good test at an attractive rate. Surprisingly there was little traffic on the course and our 4 groups were around in a timely 4 hours allowing a bit of time for a little rest and a thirst quencher while the scorecards were tabulated before heading back to Pattaya and BJ’s for the presentation. About the only comment on the day was that it was on the warm and humid side, but, after all the slogging through the wet we have done the last couple of months, not so bad. Back at the friendly confines at BJ’s Holiday Lodge, the announcements and presentation got underway and there were no close calls or count-backs for the winner on this day. Turning in a phenomenal 47 points was our bi-annual visitor from Vancouver, BC, Canada, Guy Stewart (ch 18). What a performance shooting 79 off the stick with all areas of his game working to near perfection. Rounding out the podium, albeit a good ways behind, with very good scores for a traditionally tough layout were Barry Elphick (30), 36 points, Steve Truelove (6), 34 points and Dick Warberg (24) taking a count-back over Gerd Riedler (9) on 33 points. Gerd did have some consolation taking the ‘Best Front 9’prize while Takeshi Hakozaki took the ‘Best Back 9’.

A slightly larger group out today and good scoring under the conditions and our winner was Kevyn Wright who had an excellent forty points, which was three points ahead of his nearest rival Rod Torrie who was playing with us for the first time in a long time. Despite having three blanks on his card Kevin O’Sullivan still managed to play to his handicap to come third and we then had three players with thirty four points with Donal McGuigan winning the count back to take fourth spot ahead of Jerry Sweetnam and Ian Corica. We had two ‘2’s today, coming from Donal McGuigan and Kevyn Wright.

Thursday, Oct. 11, Pattavia - Stableford 1st Bernie McCart (32) 37pts 2nd Bill Steinmann (12) 33pts 3rd Brendan Devlin (15) 31pts Near Pins: Martin Kempton, Bernie McCart. Long Putts: Tony Moy, Patrick Poussier. Only one bus required, and a couple of cars ferrying all 13 golfers to this lovely course. The trip itself was uneventful other than dodging the craters on the road leading from the highway to the course proper. We had had plenty of rain leaving punters worried that carts would not be allowed on the course but despite a heavy ground, they were. Thus playing conditions

were in our favor! Maybe, in hindsight Lift, Clean & Place could have been introduced. We played from the white tees and as per normal this course was is terrific condition, other than the greens. Now these were in great condition (as always) but on the first nine, if you were not on with your putting it could cost you dearly. One golfer was on the green putting for a birdie and ended up with a wipe! Bernie McCart had the score that nobody could beat, returning with 37 very good points, putting him four in front of the field. Running in to second was Buffalo Bill Steinmann, with Brendan Devlin taking the last spot on the podium.

We had twelve players today at one of our regular courses. The fairways first cut of rough had just been mown and were in great condition but the recent rains meant mud on the ball so lift & place on fairways was the order for the day.

Russell Gilroy.

In first place and the only one to beat handicap today was the podium king Russell Gilroy (16) with 38 points. In his first visit to the podium this trip in second place was Dan Hobbs (25) on 34 points and we then had 2 players locked on 33 points but Craig Hitchens (13) had the better back nine (18pts) to claimed third place ahead of Joe McArdle (15pts). Joe added to his winnings by having the only ‘2’ of the day.

3 rd Phelim Moran (10) 36pts 4th Kevin Blake (9) 36pts A very wet course here at Burapha today where we played the A and B courses. Again today because many of the tees were back on the blue tee boxes and with the course being so wet it was playing very long. Now that high season is coming

the numbers are starting to creep up a bit and a larger group out today. Under the circumstances we got very good scores today and to get in the prizes you had to play to your handicap or better. Kevyn Wright is playing very good golf at the moment and he was a clear winner again today with an excellent thirty nine points. Jerry Sweetnam is also playing very steady and took second with thirty seven points and he also had the consolation of having a ‘2’. We then had two players with thirty six points; Kevin Blake had been burning it up on the front nine with twenty one points but he let it slip a bit on the back nine so he lost the count back to Phelim Moran who also had a ‘2’.

Brett finally bags the gold PSC Golf from The Bunker Boys Monday, Oct. 8, Bangpakong Riverside – Stableford 1st Steve Mahoney (18) 37pts 2nd Michael Brett (14) 37pts 3rd Colin Lane (9) 36pts Despite a number of our regulars being on overseas jaunts or out injured, a very good low season field of fourteen golfers made their way to Bangpakong for the first round of the week. The course as always was in very nice condition although the fairways were a bit damp in places, not enough to warrant the pick, clean, and place rule. The greens were probably the best of any on our playing roster and a joy on which to put. Today we played from the blue tees and with no run, the course played very long, in particular, the par threes all of which were high index holes were over two hundred yards and presented a real challenge. The weather was hot and humid with no wind and once again no rain. For the second day in a row, Steve Mahoney and Michael Brett were locked together on thirty-seven points with Steve taking first place again with a superior back nine. One stroke adrift Colin Lane took third place, also edging out Takeshi

Hakozaki on countback. A number of players were locked on thirty-five points, one, in particular, Les Hall was very disappointed as he four-putted the last hole to miss out on a place. The par threes were so difficult it seemed all one had to was be on the green to win a near pin; Arne Jorgensen, Les Hall, and Takeshi Hakozaki took one each.

Wednesday, Oct. 10, Khao Kheow A & C – Stableford 1st Michael Brett (14) 37pts 2nd Neil Carter (11) 35pts 3rd Geoff Parker (14) 34pts We are now seeing the start of high season numbers with a group of fourteen participating in the midweek match at Khao Kheow. The course was very damp so pick, clean, and place rule was applied. We played from the yellow tees today, some of which had been moved forward to the whites making the course less than our normal six-thousand five hundred yards, but this had little effect as there was zero run on the fairways. Luck ran out for our last two groups who got a serious drenching on the closing holes, the second last group finished in torrential rain and wind whilst the last group

Michael Brett.

abandoned play altogether. Without Steve Mahoney to worry about, Michael Brett finally managed a first place with thirty-seven points, a curious round that included three wipes and three birdies. Neil Carter took second place with thirty-five points having lit up the course on the front nine with a series of pars and a birdie only to fade on the back. Geoff Parker who has been in the doldrums lately found some of his best form to take third place on thirty-four points. Near pins were taken by Neil Carter, Michael Brett, and two to Stuart Brown.

Friday, Oct. 12, The Emerald – Stableford 1st Jimmy Carr (15) 36pts 2nd Michael Brett (14) 36pts 3rd Neil Carter (11) 34pts The Emerald course was in

relatively good condition despite recent heavy rain but once again the pick, clean, and place rule was applied. Conditions were hot and steamy until our first group reached the eighteenth green when the rain came down. The course was virtually empty so a very speedy round was had especially by our lead group of three who finished in just over three hours. For the third time in his last four rounds Michael Brett lost first place on countback, this time to Jimmy Carr, both on thirty-six with Jimmy having a superior back nine. Neil Carter took third place with thirty-four. The par-threes were a real challenge with only Geoff Parker having any success and managing to snag two near pins. The Bunker Boys second annual golf challenge will be held on November 26-27 at the magnificent Kabinburi course. For an entry fee of five thousand five hundred baht participants receive two days of golf including green and caddie fee, two night’s accommodation at the beautiful Serenity Hotel and Spa including two buffet breakfasts, and two buffet dinners, and a very stylish golf shirt free. It being a small field and only 3 groups playing we were away a little early and had a pleasant round with no hold-ups. The course was in fantastic condition as usual and the greens were fast and true. The scoring was good with only 4 out of 12 players that didn’t manage over 30 points. Taking third spot was the little French general, Gerard Lambert with 35 points, second went to Bill Marsden with an even par 36, and the stand out winner was ‘Nipper’ Truscott with a fine 40 points. There were only two 2s, coming from Sandy Chapo and Bill Marsden.

Wednesday, Oct. 10, Green Valley – Stableford We knew immediately as we stood around the 1st tee that this was going to be a hot and humid day. In the ladies flight Miss Nu came fourth with 28 points, some way behind Miss Pin who drifted off the pace on the back nine with only 13 points. On point ahead in second was Miss Prae who had 3 blobs after the turn and was well behind the day’s winner, Miss Porn, who was

Michael Anderson had 20 points on the back nine for 37 points, but the winner for the second week running was Wayne Cotterell, who three-putted the first three greens but after some stern

Nico Rosberg expects F1 merger with electric series Rob Harris London (AP) - Highlighting fresh concerns about global warming, Nico Rosberg foresees an eventual merger between the fuel-guzzling Formula One championship and the more environmentally friendly, electric motorsport series. The German driver retired from F1 after winning his only title in 2016, and he has since invested in the fouryear-old Formula E championship, which he said is now worth 750 million euros. While F1 remains more attractive to sponsors and fans, the upstart series is showing increasing commercial appeal. Heineken, which already sponsors F1, was announced on Monday as the official beer and cider backer of the electric street racing championship under a five-year deal.

That unified approach to marketing across both series points to a future where they join forces. “Maybe we will never even get to that point (where Formula E is bigger than F1) and we will just see a merger between Formula One and Formula E before that,” Rosberg

said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. “When the moment comes that Formula One needs to go electric, which will happen, maybe you will just see a merger then.” They already share ownership through American entertainment and broadcasting

Chun won for the third time on the LPGA Tour, finishing at 16-under 272 on Sky 72’s Ocean Course in Incheon. The South Korean star’s previous victories came in majors at the 2015 U.S. Women’s Open and 2016 The Evian. Hull, from England, closed with a 71. Top-ranked Sung Hyun Park had a 69 to tie for third with Ariya Jutanugarn (71), Minjee Lee (70) and Danielle Kang (72) at 12 under.

The advantage is that Formula One and Formula E have the same owner.”

Although the cars are quieter compared to the ear-splitting, fuel-guzzling engines in F1, the new Gen 2 models which run faster and longer have been introduced. Nissan and BMW will be debuting on the grid when the fifth Formula E championship begins in Saudi Arabia in December. There has also been a high-profile signing for the series: Former F1 driver Felipe Massa racing for Venturi, the Monacobased team co-owned by actor Leonardo Di Caprio. Stoffel Vandoorne announced on Monday he is also making the switch from F1, joining the Mercedeslinked HWA Racelab Formula E team after leaving McLaren at the end of this season. Rosberg is already looking forward to the following season when Mercedes-Benz and Porsche appear on the grid. “That will be a spectacle everyone will want to watch,” Rosberg said. “They need to showcase their electric technology in Formula E. None of them can afford to lose.”

Crawford stops Benavidez late in last round to keep WBO belt Eric Olson Omaha, Nebraska (AP) — Terence “Bud” Crawford had one last retort to all the insults Jose Benavidez hurled his way. His right hand delivered it. Crawford used an uppercut to Benavidez’s chin to knock him down the first time in the 12th and final round during their title fight last Sunday and then consecutive rights to prompt referee Celestino Ruiz to stop the fight with 18 seconds left. “It feels so good to shut somebody up who has been talking for so long,” Crawford said. “I’m at ease.” Crawford, a three-division champion who was making his first defense of his WBO welterweight belt, stuck out his tongue at his fallen opponent at the conclusion of what amounted to a personal grudge match. “I gave him a good fight,” Benavidez said. “I don’t think he thought I was going to give him a good fight. But he’s the best of the best. We gave

the fans a good show.” Next up for Crawford could be a unification bout with IBF champion Errol Spence Jr., something promoter Bob Arum has said he would like to make happen sometime in 2019. The only problem is that Spence is promoted by Al Haymon, but Arum has said that would not be an insurmountable problem. “Hear me now: I’m ready to make that fight next,” Arum said. “We’re prepared to sit down and get that fight done, but I can’t force the other people into doing it.” The 31-year-old Crawford (34-0, 25 knockouts), ranked first or second on the world’s top pound-for-pound fighter lists, put on a workmanlike performance for the first half of the fight in front of a hometown crowd of 13,000 that included Crawford friend and billionaire Warren Buffett. Benavidez (27-1, 18 KOs) began tiring in the seventh after taking body shot after body shot. “I take nothing from him,”

Benavidez said. “He’s the best of the best. I feel like I did a good job.” Benavidez, 26, was plenty frisky, motioning for Crawford to keep coming toward him even as it became apparent Crawford had taken control

Djokovic wins a record fourth Shanghai Masters title Sandra Harwitt Shanghai (AP) — Novak Djokovic won a record fourth Shanghai Masters title with a 6-3, 6-4 win over 13th-seeded Borna Coric last Sunday. The second-seeded Djokovic has won all four Shanghai finals he’s contested in his career (2012, 2013, 2015 and 2018). He previously shared the record of winning three Shanghai titles with Andy Murray. Djokovic holds an 11-0 overall record in finals played in China, where he also won the Beijing tournament six times and the 2008 year-end Tennis Masters Cup held in Shanghai. “Maybe I was Chinese in the past life,” said Djokovic, smiling, in explaining impressive record in the country. “I wouldn’t be surprised, to be honest, with the way I feel here and the way I communicate and have relationship with the people. “It’s all very, very positive, for more than ten years that I have been coming to China. There is something special about this place that makes me feel like at home.” Djokovic dominated opponents behind his powerful serve, winning all 47 of his service games during the tournament. “Well, to be honest, I’m not sure whether it has happened ever, you know, that I go through a tournament without dropping one service game,” Djokovic said. “I’m sure that it hasn’t happened

of the fight, and he showed renewed life in the 10th when he landed a couple shots. The crowd was on its feet for the 12th round, and “Crawford!” ‘’Craw-ford!” chants echoed through the arena. Crawford kept coming in the 12th, and Benavidez could take no more of the steady punishment. “Oh man, it was coming,” Crawford said of his finishing flurry. “It was just a matter of time. He slowed down tremendously. He was tired. That’s when I saw my opportunity to take my best shot.” This was more of a staybusy fight for Crawford but he was eager to take the bout

after being called out by Benavidez, who is only the 10th-ranked 147-pounder by the WBO. Benavidez confronted the champion at a boxing event in Corpus Christi, Texas, in February, accusing Crawford of ducking him repeatedly. The fighters’ camps traded barbs at a media workout last week and the bickering continued at a news conference. Insults

were also lobbed both ways during the weigh-in, with Benavidez shoving Crawford and Crawford taking a swing that narrowly missed. In the co-main event, 2016 U.S. Olympic silver medalist and top featherweight prospect Shakur Stevenson of Newark, New Jersey, stopped Viorel Simion of Romania just before the bell ending the first round. Stevenson (9-0, 5 KOs) delivered a powerful left-right combination to the head to send Simion (21-3, 9 KOs) to his knees for his third knockdown. On the undercard, 2016 Olympian Mikaela Mayer of Los Angeles won a regional super featherweight belt with a unanimous decision over Vanessa Bradford of Edmonton, Alberta. Mayer (80, 4 KOs) was the aggressor throughout the eight-round bout and knocked down Bradford (4-1-2) with a right to the head in the seventh. Also, former WBO welterweight champ Mike Alvarado (40-4, 28 KOs) of Denver knocked out Robbie Cannon (16-14-3, 7 KOs) of Festus, Missouri, with a right to the chin at 41 seconds of the second round.

too many times if it did. So this was definitely one of the best service weeks that I had in my career. “But for me serve was always, so to say, a hidden weapon, the shot in the game that is obviously very important, “the” most important. But I always try to use it with an accuracy and efficiency rather than speed and power.” The Serb offered 13th-seeded Coric one break point in the match, in the sixth game of the second set. Coric, who has yet to win a set against Djokovic in three matches played, sailed a forehand wide to miss out on the rare opportunity. “It was really tough,” Coric said. “I didn’t know what to do exactly. I thought I was playing actually really well, which is in that moment not good because if I play bad, okay, I know I need to start

playing better, need to change something. “I’m just happy with the whole week. I think it was a really good week for me.” Djokovic, who has now won four titles this season, will move up one ranking spot to No. 2, pushing Roger Federer back to No. 3. The victory extended his winning streak to 18 matches, the longest of the season by any male player. Federer and Nadal both had 17-match winning streaks during the year. Coric, who had his right thigh wrapped throughout the match, saved three match points on his own serve in the ninth game of the second set. But the Croatian couldn’t prevent Djokovic from snatching the title on a fourth match point in the next game. Djokovic won the final game to love when Coric sailed a backhand long.

Paris (AP) — Convinced he was the victim of a plot, former UEFA president Michel Platini has filed a lawsuit in France in a bid to prove that former FIFA officials conspired to get him banned from soccer. The Le Monde newspaper reported that Platini filed a complaint for “slanderous denunciation” and “criminal conspiracy to commit the offense of slanderous denunciation.” Platini was banned by FIFA in 2015 for financial misconduct in relation to a $2 million payment authorized by former FIFA president Sepp Blatter. In May, Swiss federal prosecutors confirmed he was not being charged in an investigation into possible financial wrongdoing. Since September 2015, he had the status of “between a witness and an accused person” in criminal proceedings opened against Blatter. Platini wants to find out how the information about

the payment was submitted to Swiss prosecutors, and believes it was the result of an internal leak as part of a strategy aimed at preventing him from being elected FIFA president. Platini’s lawyer, William Bourdon, said that French justice officials have opened a preliminary investigation into the case. He said the $2 million payment for Platini’s work as a presidential adviser for Blatter from 1998-2002 was regular and transparent.

“There are strong indications of a conspiracy aimed at bringing down Michel Platini,” Bourdon said. According to Le Monde, former FIFA legal head Marco Villiger, former FIFA audit and compliance committee chairman Domenico Scala and Blatter are suspected by Platini of orchestrating his fall. “These three names are among a group of persons who should be heard,” Bourdon said.

Toyota recalls 2.4 million hybrids due to stalling problems Tokyo (AP) - Toyota Motor Corp. says it has issued a recall for 2.43 million hybrid vehicles in Japan and elsewhere for potential problems with stalling. The company said Friday that in rare cases the vehicles might fail to enter a “failsafe” driving mode, lose power and stall. Power steering and braking would still work but a stall at a fast speed could increase risks of a crash. The recall applies to some Toyota Prius and Auris hybrids made from October 2008-November 2014. The vehicles were involved in an earlier recall that did not fix the previously unanticipated problem that is being addressed now, the company said in a statement. Toyota said it would update the software of the vehicles

to remedy the problem for free. The recall applies to 1.25 million vehicles in Japan, 807,000 in the U.S., 290,000 in Europe and 3,000 in China with the rest across the globe. Toyota said it had received three reports in Japan related to the problem by the end of September and reported them to the transport ministry. They did not involve accidents.

It would not comment on incidents outside Japan, saying it was difficult to be certain about actual cases. The recall is meant to address situations in which the failure of a specific component, coupled with hard acceleration, could cause the vehicle to lose power rather than enter a failsafe driving mode.

Porsche will sell you an electric car, and the charger! Porsche to provide owners access to network of fast chargers in Australia, this set to provide owners access to a national fast charging network. The German brand is hoping 80-90 percent of Australia’s population will be covered with a fast charging network, according to Porsche Australia head of product and smart mobility Ingo Appel. Appel was speaking at the unveiling of the Mission E concept car which is the precursor to the Taycan production electric sports car due to arrive in Australia in 2020. The Taycan will have an 800 volt battery pack - compared to the industry standard 400volt - which will be capable of charging 80 percent of its battery in 15 minutes. But to achieve the maximum charge speed a 350 kW direct current (DC) charger is required. Porsche is currently weighing-up its options with other car makers on how to best provide a 350kW fast charging network with a third party provider to service Australia’s main highways.

Porsche Taycan.

“In regards to charging there is quite a bit of work to be done,” says Appel. “We are currently, together with other (brands), working on a third party provider solution here. “We want to make sure with the launch of Taycan that our future customer has the possibility to drive from Melbourne up to Brisbane (1375 km) if they wish to do so,” he says. Porsche Australia will follow a similar route to its European parent, which has teamed up with several competitors including Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi and mainstream brands Ford and VW to build a network of 350 kW fast chargers called Ionity across Europe.

“With launch of Taycan there will be a third party provider network of 350 kW, so exactly the same charging capabilities as the Ionity network in Europe. Definitely along the east coast and a little bit in WA and hopefully up to Adelaide,” says Appel. Porsche is considering whether to cover costs or charge customers to use the network. They may run a subsidized subscription service until the market matures. Eventually Appel believes charging stations will work like service stations with customers paying as they go. Porsche also confirmed several details of the Taycan earlier announced: a pair of motors will power all four wheels, the output of 440 kW capable of propelling the Taycan from 0-100 km/h in 3.5 seconds. Inside the Taycan will only have one button - the starter - the rest of the controls will be fully digital. The production version of the Taycan will be revealed in 2019.

I mentioned FOMM in my report on the Bangkok International Motor Show. I thought the concept was good, but was doubtful as to whether the little city runabout would reach production. Hideo Tsurumaki, the CEO of FOMM Corporation had made the statement: “Automobiles are currently an indispensable part of our lives. However, it is not always easy for everyone to use them. Here is FOMM. We would like to take advantage of the special features of Electric Vehicles and create Compact Electric Vehicles to be familiar and ideal Electric Vehicles for short-range transportation. It is not an ordinary Electric Vehicle that an engine merely replaces a motor, but an Electric Vehicle providing customers a new level of value and bringing innovation to their lives. “My dream” is to make such Electric Vehicles a reality from planning and development, and “My motivation” is to see these Electric Vehicles dashing around the city and the smiling faces of customers

driving them. The opportunity to develop Compact Electric Vehicles will provide the impetus to create motorcycles and automobiles in new configurations.” Seven months later comes the report that FOMM Corporation has been granted BOI incentives to assemble the funny little FOMM EV. It would appear that FOMM was just waiting for BOI

approval and incentives. Look upon the FOMM as an Asian SMART, but much cheaper. In congested cities like Bangkok, the populace running around in tiny FOMMs would certainly help decrease pollution and congestion; however, they could never supplant the ubiquitous pick-up outside the Bangkok environment.

US GP this weekend The American F1 GP is being held at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin Texas. Unfortunately, with the time differential between Texas and Thailand, the Grand Prix is telecast here at the uncivilized time of 1.10 a.m. Yes, one in the morning, so I, like you, will be consulting the internet after arising on the Monday. The Americans have gone the way of Singapore, making the weekend an “event”. See the world’s most sophisticated and glamorous motorsport, smell the tire smoke, taste the cuisine of Austin, TX, hear the roar of the crowd, and feel the exhilaration that can only be found at the U.S. home of Formula 1.” (I was expecting to read “the roar of the grease paint and the smell of the crowd” but no, but everything else, including Justin Timberlake and Stevie Wonder, who hasn’t seen a GP yet.) The circuit is 5.5 km long and is made up of twenty turns with an elevation

change of 41 m. According to COTA, the final plan of the circuit was released on September 1, 2010, showing a design inspired by the European tradition of sculpting the circuit to the contours of the land. The design draws from several European F1 circuits, including a recreation of Silverstone’s Maggotts-Becketts-Chapel sequence, Hockenheim’s arena bends, and a replica of Istanbul’s Turn Eight. Other corners were loosely inspired by the Senna ‘S’ at Interlagos and the Österreichring’s Sebring-Auspuffkurve. A feature of the circuit is a deliberate widening of corners, to encourage drivers to follow multiple racing lines, which did seem to work in last year’s GP. From the start line, the cars will climb to the first corner the highest point of the circuit - with the apex of the corner positioned on the crest of the hill. They will descend back down the hill to navigate a series of fast sweepers and through a

blind corner at Turn 10, taking them to the far end of the circuit and a hairpin at Turn 11. The cars will then follow a one km straight back towards the pit and paddock area before entering the final sector of the lap and weaving through a series of corners modeled on Hockenheim’s stadium section. This will be followed by a downhill, multi-apex corner with limited run-off before the final two corners of the circuit, a pair of left-hand bends that return the cars to the main straight. Despite influences by Herr Tilke, the circuit did see passing last year, so this year with Hamilton (Mercedes), Vettel (Ferrari) and the Red Bulls of Verstappen and Ricciardo could produce some excitement. Just such a pity the telecast isn’t till 1 a.m. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) only needs to win this GP and Vettel (Ferrari) come anywhere from third downwards, to make the 2018 World Driving Championship his fifth.

Remembering a great king on the anniversary of his passing

In Chonburi, Gov. Pakarathorn Thienchai kicked off the new “doing good with heart” volunteer program initiated by HM King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun in his father’s name.

Banglamung District Chief Naris Niramaiwong leads the candlelight vigil for the late monarch with top Pattaya officials at the district office.

The Pattaya area honored the memory of HM King Rama IX by doing good deeds on the second anniversary of his death. As usual for a long holiday weekend, the roads leading into and out of town were jammed, with traffic moving at a snail’s pace both directions on Sukhumvit Road. But this holiday was different, as Pattaya party turned down a notch in observance of the solemn occasion. Live music and boisterous entertainment on Walking Street and other nightspots around town was canceled for Oct. 13 and, from morning until night, people went out of their way to do good for society. Top Pattaya and Banglamung officials kicked off the commemorations with an early-morning alms offering Oct. 13, laying flowered wreaths before a portrait of HM the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

At 7 p.m., Banglamung District Chief Naris Niramaiwong returned to the district office to lead the candlelight vigil for the late monarch with top Pattaya officials. The crowd was full of both locals and tourists, young and old, including youngsters from the Child Protection and Development Center, who laid marigold garlands, chanted and lit their candles. Everyone then stood and observed 89 seconds of silence, followed by singing “Phra Phu Song Pen Niran, the King who will live for eternity”. Photos of King Rama IX were given to al participants as they filed out. During the day, the Provincial Waterworks Authority did its part as well by sending out inspectors to check people’s homes, fix leaky pipes and offer advice on water conservation. On Jomtien Beach, Deputy Mayor Pattana Boonsawat and Sretapol Boonsawat, head of the local beach umbrella vendors association, kicked off a beach-cleaning along three kilometers of Jomtien shoreline. Down the road at Central Festival Pattaya Beach, General Manager Lanida Rattanachaichot opened an alms-giving ceremony for 52 monks. And on Soi Chumsai, Tuk Pailin residents and local food vendors cooked up a menu of dishes given out for free to the public, including noodles with fish curry, side dishes and ice cream. Other good deeds were done in the late King’s name throughout the area, including cutting grass, distributing food and drink, collecting garbage, and helping poor people and children.

On the eve of October 13th, Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha led state officials and members of the public in a candle-lit ceremony at Sanam Luang, in remembrance of His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

initiated by HM King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun in his father’s name. In Sattahip, the Royal Thai Navy commemorated the second anniversary of the death of King Rama IX with a merit-making ceremony for 89 monks. Vice Adm. Banjob Poedaeng, commander of the 1st Naval Area, opened the Oct. 13 ceremony at the Air and Coastal Defense Command in Sattahip. Sailors and members of the public joined to give dried food and rice to the monks, whose number represented HM the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s age when he died in 2016. On Oct. 14, Chonburi volunteers spread across neighborhoods to eliminate wet breeding grounds for mosquitoes that carry dengue fever and other diseases. They got rid of standing water, placed abate into other water sources and educated neighbors on the threat the mozzies pose. Others planted trees to restore the environment in the name of HM the late King Rama IX.

Mövenpick picks its wines The function was held in the Red Coral area (it’s not a ‘room’ – I think the architect was partaking of mind altering substances during the pencil to paper stage, but at least the chairs were comfortable). The concept of pairing wines and food is a well tried and popular way to introduce wines to the oenophiles or

Moscato was paired with a shooter of Tomato Gazpacho complete with a grilled prawn and burrata cheese. Both emanate from Spain, and indeed went well together with the slightly sharp gazpacho offset by the by the sweetness of the moscato. After mingling into the Red Coral area, the wine drinkers

Dr Iain Corness Mövenpick is in NaJomtien and very easy to access. To get there (which is actually the easiest part of the whole exercise), head towards Sattahip on Sukhumvit Road, do a U-Turn after Ocean Marina and Mövenpick is about 200 meters along on the left. We experienced road works, but just do the first U-Turn that you can

after Ocean Marina. A long driveway gets you to the secure parking area. There is an elevator which will then take you up to the Lobby. For a ‘newbie’ Mövenpick is showing itself to be very active. October was ushered in with a wine function, teamed with finger foods, with the new GM Jean-Pierre Trabut mingling with the guests (doing what GM’s do best). Cool gazpacho and hot prawns.

Wine connoisseur Dr. Iain Corness says, “I am not impressed by ‘scores’…wine appreciation is always a very personal feature.”

even those who just like a tipple, but this is usually done as a ‘wine dinner’ which is a fairly formal way of exposing the drinkers to the drink. However, there is another way, and that is by serving finger food along with the wines; however, this really does not help the wine drinkers pair the food and the wines. Mövenpick took this concept a bit further by presenting the different wines with the different food, best suited together. For example, the reception wine, Opera Prima

were exposed to live stations, and I began with some French Oysters (Fine de Clair), shucked on the spot by a charming young lady, with the wine at hand being a Rockbrook Sauvignon Blanc from California. A second display table featured a Charcuterie which featured hand carved Iberico ham, salami and a mixed antipasto. The Rockbrook Sauvignon Blanc had been given 84 points by the Wine and Spirits magazine. To be honest, I am not impressed

by ‘scores’ as they reflect the palate of the examiner, rather than any supposed excellence or otherwise of the wines. Wine appreciation is always a very personal feature. Staying with the whites, a Coastal Ridge Chardonnay from California (87 points if you believe in the reviewer) was chosen by me to go with some Open Face ‘bites’ with house made gravlax and pumpernickel, cream cheese and diced cucumber. These two were so refreshing, I could have stayed there for the duration. Moving into the reds, I first began with a Rockbrook Shiraz, from the wineries in California. This wine has a reasonable body, enough to go with the roasted pork pancetta rolled and the slow roasted Charolaise beef prime rib with marrow

bone and lattice chips. With Mövenpick having its own dry aging butchery, you can expect excellent cuts of the Charolaise beef. For me, the fifth wine was the Coastal Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon, another Californian wine (87 points if you like numbers). This I drank with more of the slow roasted Charolaise and they went very well together. Mövenpick is to be congratulated for coming up with a different way of presenting wines and producing a very enjoyable evening. An evening of popular

Brandied fish fillets This is a very easy BBQ dish and although bream was called for in the original recipe, you can use almost any other fish fillets. Make the basting sauce two hours before and actually use it like a marinade, prior to the BBQ. The most important feature with all fish dishes like this one is in the careful filleting. A mouthful of bones does not impress your dinner guests! And do not overcook.

Cooking Method Basting sauce: In a pan on low heat melt the butter, then add and combine soya sauce, lemon juice, brandy and garlic. Remove from the heat and brush on to the fillets and leave them in the refrigerator for two hours. Heat the lightly greased BBQ plate and place fillets on the BBQ and baste frequently with the sauce. Turn once and repeat the basting until the fish is cooked through. This does not take long, especially if you have had the fillets soaking in the sauce. When almost cooked, sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve with lemon wedges and a steamed rice accompaniment. Ingredients Serves 3-4 Fish fillets 750 gm Butter ¼ cup Soya Sauce 2 tbspns Lemon juice from 1 lemon (or 2 limes) Brandy ¼ cup Garlic crushed 1 clove Sesame seeds ½ cup

With only two months until the inaugural Amata Friendship Cup, Team Thailand and Team Japan have announced the latest additions to their world-class line-ups, which will compete in the unique, world-first event to be staged at Amata Spring Country Club in Chonburi from 21-23 December. Team Thailand captains, Boonchu Ruangkit and Virada Nirapathpongporn, welcome Prom Meesawat, Jazz

Janewattananond and world #79 Thidapa Suwannapura into their ranks, whilst Japanese captains, Naomichi ‘Joe’ Ozaki and Miho Koga, appoint Masahiro Kawamura, Fumika Kawagishi and world #73 Sakura Koiwai to strengthen Team Japan. Thai ranks. Kawamura, Kawagishi and Koiwai, meanwhile, will compete for Team Japan alongside Satoshi Kodaira and Nasa Hataoka, leading lights on the PGA and LPGA Tours, respectively. The tournament, which will see a team of Thailand’s top men and women professional and amateur golfers compete with an equivalent team of Japan’s top players, has been created to celebrate the friendship held between both

countries and promote a narrative of equality and togetherness in the sport. Announcing the latest additions to his squad, captain Ruangkit, a globally recognised ambassador for Thai golf, said: “I am delighted Virada and I have been able to add Prom, Jazz and Thidapa to our team, adding three players who have shown they are capable of winning on the very biggest stage. The sixth and final round of the Blancpain GT SeriesAsia took place at the new Ningbo International Speedpark in the Zhejiang province of China last weekend. Thai racing driver Sandy Stuvik was once again joined by his Australian teammate Shae Davies for the season finale. Stuvik qualified in 8th position in Qualifying 1 with his Porsche 911 GT3 R. The times were close in the session, so the race was shaping up to be an exciting one. Davies meanwhile qualified in 13th position in Qualifying 2, in a hotly contested session. Stuvik took the start in Race 1 and was up to 5th position until a crash between a Nissan GTR GT3 and an Audi R8 GT3 happened in front of the Thai driver. A further collision was unavoidable although Stuvik did everything he could to evade it. The damage sustained was too heavy to continue the race and he was forced to retire his

Porsche from the race. The Craft Bamboo Racing team mechanics did a fantastic job to get the car repaired and race-ready for Race 2 the following morning. Shae Davies took the start and after a lot of chaos in the opening laps, the Australian managed to settle down in 13th position before handing the

car over to his Thai teammate. Stuvik fought as hard as he could to maintain track position but the lack of pace from the car was making a

points-finish difficult. The Thai driver was then unfortunately tagged into a spin during a racing incident. He was unable to restart the engine, and was forced to retire the car once more. “It was one of the most challenging weekends and seasons in my career,” said Stuvik later. “The team has done a fantastic job all season and we’ve been able to get on the podium, but ultimately I feel that the car we’ve had has been lacking pace. We will be back stronger and faster, and we are working towards next season already. “I want to thank all my supporters for following me this season and I will do everything I can to bring the Thai flag and anthem to the circuits next year,” added the young Thai.
