US hurricane, Asian typhoon: 1 brings water, the other, wind

Motorists brave the rain and strong winds brought about by Typhoon Mangkhut which barreled into northeastern Philippines before dawn Saturday, Sept. 15, in Manila, Philippines. Nature expresses its fury in sundry ways. Two deadly storms - Hurricane Florence and Typhoon Mangkhut - roared ashore on the same day, half a world apart, but the way they spread devastation was as different as water and wind. Nongprue prepared for rainy season finale

Trucker pulls down power lines in East Pattaya Keng Na Songkhla

Sanitation Chief Berkchai Ninpan (inset) says Nongprue is well prepared for the rainy season finale.

Warapun Jaikusol Nongprue said it was well prepared for the rainy season finale, but admitted the areas outside the Pattaya city limits benefit from being on high ground. Sanitation Chief Berkchai Ninpan said Sept. 11 that no

major flooding was expected in the coming weeks, as problem areas already were fixed and much of the subdistrict sits on high ground. Nongprue has worked diligently to dredge stormdrainage canals and installed drainage systems in both Tropical and Sukame

villages, where flooding has been constant for more than 10 years. Water flows from higher land downhill into Pattaya City, which is in Nongprue Sub-district, he said. But responsibility to solving flooding lies with Pattaya City Hall, not the municipality.

A careless truck driver knocked out electricity in East Pattaya when the crane he was hauling snagged power lines and pulled down two utility poles. Chuchart Topai, the 45year-old driver of the Samut Prakan-registered Isuzu sixwheeler, admitted he was unfamiliar with Pattaya and drove down Sukhumvit Soi 33 without realizing his crane was too tall for the power lines there. Moving at normal speed, Topai hit the wires and continued on, causing one power pole to topple into the road and a second to lean badly.

27 rats caught on Pattaya Beach Jetsada Homklin Pattaya health officials captured 27 rats on Pattaya Beach in their latest effort to make the shoreline rodent-free. Disease control head Kanrapa Mukdasanit said Sept. 10 that the Health Department had distributed 105 rat traps to beach vendors north of Soi 13, urging them to put out traps weekly. In the first week, 27 rats were caught. Health officials urged vendors and beach users to dispose of all food and trash separately to keep the vermin population under control.

Pattaya staging pumps at critical points to battle floods

Jetsada Homklin Pattaya is staging pumps and cleaning equipment at flood-prone areas as rainy season reaches its climax, city sanitation officials told business leaders. Speaking at the Sept. 13 Pattaya Business & Tourism Association, Sanitation Department representative Anuwat Thongkom said machinery, vehicles, pumps

and staff are stationed at the worst hit areas to provide immediate relief from flooding. Moreover, he said, the department will be on alert around the clock for flooding emergencies and can immediately deploy resources to hard-hit areas. Business leaders also got an update on the slow removal of tens of thousands of tons of trash backlogged on Koh Larn. City Councilman Thanet

Supornsahatrangsi said trash is again being hauled to the mainland for disposal, but slowly. A city council progress meeting is scheduled for Sept. 25. After that, he will be able to update the PBTA. Association President Ekasit Ngampichet said more public relations work needs to be done on the island to get people to separate trash and recycle and cut back on the waste being generated.

Storm dumps 20 tons of garbage on Pattaya Beach Warapun Jaikusol About 100 Pattaya workers collected more than 20 tons of garbage and natural debris after a Sept. 14 storm. Environment Department

staffers spread out along the entirety of Pattaya Beach Sept. 15, using machinery and hand tools to collect the rubbish that both washed ashore and down from higher elevations, along with weeds, wood and hyacinth flushed to the sea from drainage canals.

Head cleaner Sanya Tubtimsir said the crews worked as quickly as possible to preserve the image of the beach for tourists. With Typhoon Mungkhut expected to move inland from China and Vietnam by Thursday, more rain was expected in Pattaya.

Pattaya has given a Pukplub Canal-area homeowner an extra two weeks to clear out before the illegally built house is demolished. Pongpan Padsamorn was cited more than six weeks ago for building the reinforced-concrete, two-story structure without any permits on public land adjoining the critical flood-control canal in Naklua. She was given 45 days to demolish the house, but on Sept. 12 it was still standing. Meeting with building control, public area maintenance,

legal and engineering personnel, Deputy Mayor Vichien Pongpanit said Pongpan will be given up to two more weeks to move all her belongings out and tear down the house. If she fails to comply, city bulldozers will move in and the delinquent homeowner will be billed, he said. (PCPR)

Pattaya to restore 1939 Artesian well in Naklua Boonlua Chatree Pattaya plans to restore a 79year-old Artesian well found in a Naklua neighborhood. Chairman Anan Angkanawisai and other city council members visited the site of the well on Soi Thammada in Moo 3 village Sept. 13 to find it still worked, but was in disrepair. A proposal was made to restore the well so that it both can continue to serve the community and be a historical highlight for Naklua. behind Chonglom Temple, the well still works and is used by the community. The well itself is concrete and about 1.5 meters wide, with four wooden posts attached to lower the water bucket. But the posts are

dilapidated and the property surrounding the well is overgrown. Pattaya hopes to spend some money to restore the land and replace the pulley system to make it more useful and a historical attraction.

The contractor rebuilding Takhiantia-Wat Sangkapiew Road was fined 40,000 baht a day for failing again to meet a Sept. 10 construction deadline. The project to widen and repave 950 meters of the roadway on top of a new sewer system was scheduled for completion on Aug. 11. Banglamung District then extended the deadline to Aug. 26 due to myriad of unseen obstacles and then again to Sept. 10. But by Sept. 12, sewers remained uncovered from

Sangkapiew Temple onwards, with no barriers or warning signs posted. One car, driven by Suwan Prakobtham, chief of Moo 1 village, actually plunged into one of the giant holes. Fortunately, she was unhurt. Takhiantia Clerk Somchai Sirisombat said daily fines of 40,000 baht will be levied upon the unidentified contractor until the job is done, which was expected be on

or around Sept. 20. Poor planning is behind the long-running delays for the 14.4-million-baht project. Contractors broke ground in February, only to discover that Provincial Waterworks Authority pipelines laid under the road and had to be moved. Then electrical poles and transformers had to be moved unexpectedly. All the setbacks led to delays that continue to irritate road users.

Warapun Jaikusol About 1,000 Pattaya residents and tourists cleaned up city beaches for International Coastal Cleanup Day. Environment Minister Surasak Kanchanara opened the Sept. 14 event with Pattaya Mayor Anan Charoenchasri. According to the International Coastal Cleanup organization, 27 million tons of

garbage was from the oceans last year. Most of the items were glass bottles, plastic bags, and beverage cans. Garbage collected at the beach also included plastic straws, foam containers, cigarette butts and snack bags. Up to 80% of the waste came from coastal industries, transportation from rivers in coastal areas, waste from

homes, tours around coasts and rainstorm runoff. Garbage from the ocean came from fishing boats, boat transportation, cruise ships, tour boats, coastal fisheries and petrol and gas drilling businesses. Volunteers spread out across Pattaya and Jomtien Beach, picking up garbage while divers cleaned the seabed and coral reefs.

More encroachment found at Sukhawadee House Environment minister calls for end of plastic use in Pattaya

Boonlua Chatree Pattaya officials have found more structures at tourist attraction Sukhawadee House encroaching on public property. Cited in January and July for usurping public land for its own use, the ostentatious mansion owned by the head of poultry giant Saha Farms again was accused of building a steel gate and parking lot on public property. Deputy Mayor Vichien Pongpanit and Banglamung Deputy District Chief Prapan Prathumchumpu visited the Sukhumvit Road attraction Sept. 12, accompanied by engineers, lawyers and police. They were there to check on the demolition of a building blocking Sukhumvit Soi 8. They found the building gone, but a new steel fence and reinforced concrete parking lot for buses instead. officials went looking for Sukhawadee management. In January, 11 of Sukhawadee House’s 80 rai of land were deemed to be public land, including landfill reclaimed from the sea. The land included gardens and salas and was encircled by a fence as well as the takeover of a waterfront footpath where tour buses were allowed to park. Until July, Sukhawadee management had cooperated with the city and was allowed to operate normally. However,

on July 5, Pattaya officials discovered a staircase had been built that encroached on a public footpath. In addition, the mansion had laid down artificial grass and put out tables and chairs. Two months later and that grass and tables are still there. Pattaya said it can remove them itself, as they are not actual buildings subject to demolition proceedings. It gave the mansion one last chance to restore the area to its pristine state before city workers move in.

As Google turns 20, questions over whether it’s too powerful Michael Liedtke San Francisco (AP) - Twenty years after Larry Page and Sergey Brin set out to organize all of the internet’s information, the search engine they named Google has morphed into a dominating force in smartphones, online video, email, maps and much more. That resounding success now has regulators and lawmakers around the world questioning whether the company has become too powerful as its ubiquitous services vacuum up sensitive information about billions of people hooked on its products. Google’s search engine remains entrenched as the internet’s main gateway, and its digital advertising business is on pace to generate about $110 billion in revenue this year. Much of that revenue now flows through Google’s Android operating system, which powers 80 percent of the world’s smartphones. Google also runs the biggest video site in YouTube, the most popular web browser in Chrome, the top email service in Gmail and the maps that most people use to get around. Not bad for a company that started 20 years ago Friday with an initial investment of $100,000. Google and its sibling companies operating

under the umbrella of Alphabet Inc. are now worth $800 billion. Although Google wouldn’t comment for this story, the company has repeatedly pointed out that its mostly free products are so widely used because people like them. Google’s success often draws comparisons with Microsoft. By 1998, the year Google started, U.S. regulators had become so concerned about Microsoft’s power through its Windows operating system that they had begun to explore a forced breakup. Although Microsoft remained intact, the multiyear battle with the U.S. government and other disputes with European regulators hobbled

Marcia Dunn Cape Canaveral, Fla. (AP) - NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity has snapped a dusty but cool selfie. NASA released the panorama this week. A thin layer of dust is visible on Curiosity, the result of a storm that enveloped Mars this summer. The darkish sky indicates dust still clogging the atmosphere in August, when the panorama was shot by Curiosity’s mast camera. The rover had just

drilled for a new rock sample. Curiosity is nuclear-powered and therefore unaffected by the lack of sunlight. NASA’s older rover Opportunity, however, relies on solar power and has been silent since June. Flight controllers hope as the Martian sky continues to clear, Opportunity will get back in contact. But after almost 15 years exploring the red planet, Opportunity may not have the strength or ability for a comeback.

and distracted Microsoft, helping to propel the rise of Google and Apple. Google is now confronting the same potential fate. “Google is in the government’s crosshairs,” said Ken Auletta, who was given inside access

to the company while writing his 2009 book, “Googled: The End of the World As We Know It.” ‘’This company once had a certain glow to it, but it is losing its halo.” Just this past week, Google raised hackles in Congress by refusing to send Page or its current

CEO, Sundar Pichai, to a hearing on Russian manipulation of internet services to sway U.S. elections. Congressional officials left an empty chair while top executives from Facebook and Twitter appeared. Offended lawmakers derided Google as “arrogant.”

The European Commission already has imposed fines totaling $7.8 billion after concluding the company had unfairly used its search engine to highlight its own services and illegally bundled together its products in Android. Google has denied any wrongdoing, but that hasn’t discouraged European regulators from looking into other possible abuses. U.S. President Donald Trump and some U.S. regulators are now raising the possibility of opening new investigations into Google’s business and privacy practices five years after the Federal Trade Commission decided the company was mostly complying with the laws. It all paints a picture of a company that may spend the next decade fighting to protect the empire it built during its first two decades.

Bangkok meet fails to finalize draft on climate change rules Kaweewit Kaewjinda Bangkok (AP) - An international meeting in Bangkok fell short of its aim of completing fruitful preparations to help an agreement be reached in December on guidelines for implementing the 2015 Paris climate change agreement. The six-day meeting, which ended on Sunday, Sept. 9, was scheduled to step up progress in the battle against rising global carbon emissions by adopting a completed text that could be presented at the COP24 conference in Katowice, Poland, three months from now. A primary objective of the 2015 Paris agreement, to which 190 nations subscribe, is to limit the global temperature increase by 2100 to less than 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) and as close as possible to 1.5 degrees, which is vital to the survival of island nations threatened by rising seas. But the absence of guidelines for meeting that goal has led to fears that not enough action is being taken. There have been notable disagreements over fair financing for implementation of the rules by developing countries, and the technical details of their reporting on progress. Patricia Espinosa, executive secretary for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, said Sunday at the closing press briefing for the Bangkok meeting that progress was made on most issues but nothing was finalized. The meeting was attended by representatives of most of the countries party to the

Paris agreement, as well as the United States, which has announced that it is pulling out of the pact. Espinosa said there was “limited progress” on the issue of contributions from developed nations to developing countries, adding that she is “hopeful” that future discussions will be productive because of the importance of the issue. “On the core issues of forward-looking climate finance and the degree of flexibility developing countries should be given on the information and reporting requirements for national commitments under the Paris Agreement, negotiators were stalemated in Bangkok,” said a statement from Alden Meyer, director of strategy and policy for the Union of Concerned Scientists, a U.S.-based activist group. “It’s now up to the incoming Polish presidency and officials leading negotiations to find ways to bridge

the deep differences on these issues and to secure agreement in Katowice on a robust, comprehensive package of rules to implement the Paris Agreement,” he said. Harjeet Singh, climate policy manager for ActionAid International, said Sunday that a vital component of the Paris agreement is for wealthy nations to provide financial assistance to developing countries as they fight natural disasters brought by climate change. But he said wealthy and developed countries “led by the United States and including countries such as Australia, Japan and even the European Union” refused to clearly show “how much money they are going to provide and how that is going to be counted.” Advocacy for the developing countries was led at the meeting by China, said Meyer, but was also supported by others, including India, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia.

Activists were critical of Washington’s lobbying at the meeting, especially because President Donald Trump has announced plans to have the U.S. withdraw from the Paris pact, which had been heavily promoted by his predecessor, Barack Obama. “The U.S. has announced its withdrawal from the Paris Agreement but still negotiates as if it is a Party, weakening international cooperation by not contributing to finance and technology transfer to developing countries,” Meena Raman, legal adviser at Third World Network, said in an emailed statement. Climate change is a polarizing issue in the United States, and some states and local communities have announced policies supporting the Paris agreement. Thousands of governors, mayors, company CEOs and civil society leaders are expected to gather in San Francisco for the Global Climate Action Summit.

Your intelligence is in your jeans? (Sorry, in your genes) Nature or Nurture? What shapes us? In many published studies of human beings, their development and their frailties, it often comes down to a discussion of Nature or Nurture. My doctor son, for example; does he get his academic brilliance from me and his reluctance to fight bureaucracy from being raised by his mother? Nature versus Nurture again. Or how deep is the gene pool? One area which always interests prospective parents is their likelihood of getting intelligent children or drones. Much has been written about the inherent dangers to the unborn child while it sits, waiting in the wings, so to speak, for that awfully long drawn out 9 months of gestation. Mind you, it could be worse - we could be elephants and have to wait three years to see how a brief encounter in the bush turned out! Many factors can influence the unborn child in utero, as we doctors like to call that “bun in the oven” stage. Most of these developmental influences are not good influences

and may produce children that are smaller than the average - smoking by Mum-to-be being a prime example. Some clever chaps in Norway sat down and followed around 700 kids from birth to age five. Around half of these children were of low birth weight, and the other half “normal”. So at age five they assessed the children for Verbal Intelligence Quotient (IQ) and Non-verbal IQ. The results were interesting. While the smaller babies did have a very slight lowering in the two IQ scales measured, it was not much. However, the factors that did alter the results were Mum’s non-verbal problem solving abilities and child rearing style. In percentage terms, this accounted for between 20-30% of the variance in the observed children, while birth weight accounted for 1-2% only. Now before you rush out thinking that it is all genetic and wonder what you have to do to increase the depth of the family gene pool, did you notice that not only were there genetic factors at work (Mum’s non-verbal abilities) but

also child rearing style, which is not genetic, but a learned response from her mother. Definitely “nurture”. To my mind, this shows there is almost certainly a predominance of effect on children by their mothers. Both genetic and nurturing. I’m sorry, Dad. It might take two to tango, but Mum is the all-important one - especially in the first few years of a child’s life. Now at the risk of being sent hate mail by the lady liberationists out there, I do believe that this demonstrates a very “normal” behavioral pattern. The male of the species Homo sapiens was the hunter-gatherer, while the female stayed at home to cook sabre tooth tiger burgers and raise the offspring. Of course the mother has a greater influence on the preschoolers mind (and the abilities of that mind). So in answer to the vexed question of how to get intelligent kids, it’s easy. Simply find an intelligent healthy woman, who wants to stay home and raise your brood of geniuses. The harder part is finding one that wants you for her mate!

Aspirin disappoints for avoiding first heart attack, stroke Marilynn Marchione New studies find most people won’t benefit from taking daily low-dose aspirin or fish oil supplements to prevent a first heart attack or stroke. Taking a low-dose aspirin every day has long been known to cut the chances of another heart attack, stroke or other heart problem in people who already have had one, but the risks aren’t worth it for most folks, major new research finds. Although it’s been used for more than a century, aspirin’s value in many situations is still unclear. The latest studies are some of the largest and longest to test this pennies-a-day blood thinner in people who don’t yet have heart disease or a blood vessel-related problem. One found that aspirin did not help prevent first strokes or heart attacks in people at moderate risk for one because they had several health threats such as smoking, high blood pressure or high cholesterol. Another tested aspirin in people with diabetes, who are more likely to develop or die

from heart problems, and found that the modest benefit it gave was offset by a greater risk of serious bleeding. Aspirin did not help prevent cancer as had been hoped. And fish oil supplements, also tested in the study of people with diabetes, failed to help. “There’s been a lot of uncertainty among doctors around the world about prescribing aspirin” beyond those for whom it’s now recommended, said one study leader, Dr. Jane Armitage of the University

of Oxford in England. “If you’re healthy, it’s probably not worth taking it.” The research was discussed Sunday at the European Society of Cardiology meeting in Munich. The aspirin studies used 100 milligrams a day, more than the 81-milligram pills commonly sold in the United States but still considered low dose. Adult strength is 325 milligrams.

thought to have a moderate risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke within a decade because of other health issues. After five years, 4 percent of each group had suffered a heart problem - far fewer than expected, suggesting these people were actually at low risk, not moderate. Other medicines they were taking to lower blood pressure and cholesterol may have cut their heart risk so much that aspirin had little chance of helping more, said the study leader, Dr. J. Michael Gaziano of Brigham and Women’s Hospital. One percent of aspirin takers had stomach or intestinal bleeding, mostly mild - twice as many as those on dummy pills. Aspirin users also had more nosebleeds, indigestion, reflux or belly pain. Bayer sponsored the study, and many researchers consult for the aspirin maker. Results were published by the journal Lancet.

New US survey shows some progress against opioid crisis Carla K. Johnson Figures from a U.S. government survey released Friday show some progress in the fight against the ongoing opioid addiction crisis with fewer people in 2017 using heroin for the first time compared to the previous year. The number of new users of heroin decreased from 170,000 in 2016 to 81,000 in 2017, a one-year drop that would need to be sustained for years to reduce the number of fatal overdoses, experts said. Fewer Americans are misusing or addicted to prescription opioid painkillers. And more people are getting treatment for heroin and opioid addiction, the survey found.

The Trump administration said the positive trends show government efforts are working. Messages are reaching people about the dangers of heroin and the deadly contaminants it often contains on the street, Dr. Elinore McCance-Katz, an administration health official, said in a video presentation released with the figures. Among the other findings: - Marijuana use climbed in all age groups except young teenagers, with 2.5 percent of those 26 and older, or 5.3 million adults, reporting they use marijuana daily or almost daily last year. - Methamphetamine and cocaine use climbed in young adults, ages 18 to 25. The uptick may indicate that users are shifting from opioids

to other drugs, said Leo Beletsky, a public health policy expert at Northeastern University in Boston. - Young adults have increasing rates of serious mental illness, major depression and suicidal thoughts. - The number of new heroin users in 2017 - 81,000 - was lower than the numbers in most years from 2009 to 2016. But it was similar to the numbers of new heroin users in 2002 through 2008. Experts said there’s still work to be done before success can be declared. “Taken together, this does not look like the portrait of a nation with improving mental health and addiction issues,” said Brendan Saloner, an addiction researcher at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of

Public Health. “It’s hard to look at this and not think we need to be doing a better job than we’re doing now.” Earlier this month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released preliminary figures that appear to show a leveling off in overdose deaths in late 2017 and the first two months of this year. Health officials have said it’s too soon to say whether the nation’s drug crisis has peaked. But in an interview with The Associated Press this week, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said several measures of the crisis are improving. “We are making progress,” he said. “We are seeing a flattening of our deaths from overdose.” (AP)

and strokes from a blood clot, but also a higher risk of bleeding. Guidelines vary on which of them should consider aspirin. Oxford researchers randomly assigned 15,480 adults with Type 1 or 2 diabetes but otherwise in good health and with no history of heart problems to take either aspirin, 1 gram of fish oil, both substances, or dummy pills every day. After seven and a half years, there were fewer heart problems among aspirin users but more cases of serious bleeding, so they largely traded one risk for another.

Fish oil results The same study also tested omega-3 fatty acids, the good oils found in salmon, tuna and other fish. Supplement takers fared no better than those given dummy capsules - 9 percent of each group suffered a heart problem. “We feel very confident that there doesn’t seem to be a role for fish oil supplements for preventing heart

disease,” said study leader Dr. Louise Bowman of the University of Oxford. The British Heart Foundation was the study’s main sponsor. Bayer and Mylan provided aspirin and fish oil, respectively. Results were published by the New England Journal of Medicine. Other studies are testing different amounts and prescription versions of fish oil, “but I can’t tell people go spend your money on it; we think it’s probably better to eat fish,” said Dr. Holly Andersen, a heart disease prevention specialist at New York-Presbyterian/ Weill Cornell who was not involved in the study. The new research doesn’t alter guidelines on aspirin or fish oil, said Dr. Nieca Goldberg, a cardiologist at NYU Langone Medical Center and an American Heart Association spokeswoman. They recommend fish oil only for certain heart failure patients and say it’s reasonable to consider for people who have already suffered a heart attack.

Bomb technicians detonate mine in Puget Sound Brownsville, Wash. (AP) - Coast Guard and Navy bomb technicians have detonated what they said appeared to be an unidentified mine floating in Puget Sound between Brownsville Marina and Bainbridge Island. The object was reported at about 2 p.m. Tuesday. The Navy says initial inspection of the moored mine showed it had decades of marine growth. At about 5 p.m., Navy divers secured a long line to the device and began towing it with a small boat. KIRO-TV video showed it was detonated without incident by 8:15 p.m. Authorities had asked residents along the waterfront to stay inside and away from beaches as a precaution. Brownsville is a few miles south of Naval Base Kitsap - Keyport’s torpedo testing range.

School demolition crews unearth 124-year-old time capsule Swampscott, Mass. (AP) - Construction crews tearing down a former middle school in Massachusetts have found a 124-year-old time capsule. The Daily Item reports crews found the time capsule under one of the front steps of the former Swampscott Middle School. The capsule is dated April 28, 1894, the day the school was dedicated. It contains two newspapers, remnants of military uniforms from the Civil War, a war medal and names of locals who served in the war. Planning Board Chairwoman Angela Ippolito says they were aware the time capsule existed but weren’t sure where it was located. She says the discovery was “quite a thrill.” The items are now heading to the Northeast Document Conservation Center for assessment. Ippolito says they hope to put the items on display at Town Hall.

St. Louis apartment with kitchen-bathroom combo creates stir St. Louis (AP) - A St. Louis man is the new tenant of a tiny apartment with a unique layout - the kitchen and bathroom are in the same place. Yep. The toilet, bathtub, oven and sink are all in one room. The 200-square-foot (18.5-sq. meter) apartment is in St. Louis’ tony Central West End. The ad and photo for the $525-per-month apartment appeared on several websites and had people flush with excitement. Harold Karabell of S.F. Shannon Real Estate Management says the new tenant loves it. The 111-year-old building originally housed 12 luxury apartments. Karabell says that around the time of the Great Depression, it was remade into 50 small units, the studio the smallest among them. Toilet/kitchen combo aside, Karabell says the apartment has a lot to like, including refinished hardwood floors and new windows.

Venomous rattlesnake found near Massachusetts go-kart track Braintree, Mass. (AP) - Police responding to a Massachusetts go-kart track found a venomous snake wrapped around a tree in the parking lot. Braintree police say the timber rattlesnake was discovered Wednesday night near X1 Boston. Experts think the rattlesnake likely came from the nearby 6,000-acre Blue Hills Reservation, which has a known rattlesnake population. Environmental Police officers captured the snake and released it “far, far from Braintree,” back in the reservation. The snake is an endangered species in Massachusetts, and it is illegal to kill one. While a bite from the snake can kill, there have been no reported human fatalities in the state since 1791.

How to get great holiday snaps In the days when we used to come home with slides after a holiday, there would be a ‘slide night’ for friends and relatives to be bored out of their minds with shots of, “Here we are at the hotel in Nakon Nowhere, and similar.” You’ve all been there. However, with today’s digitals, you have the ability to review your photographs instantly, so you have every good reason to come back with better holiday snaps – and here’s how! What we have to strive for are photos with ‘impact’. Ones that punch the viewer fair between the eyes and compel him or her to look further. To get this elusive ‘impact’ we need to look at simplicity, color, light and

depth. Now while that may sound a little too advanced for someone with a point and shooter, it is not really. Let’s take Simplicity first. In your photo there should be an identifiable “hero” - that is the subject matter. You have to frame up your shot so that you get rid of extraneous matter which detracts from the simplicity and also detracts from the subject, thus weakening your message. One tip is to use a wide angle lens and walk in close to heighten the dramatic viewpoint of your subject. Color is next. Unless you are a Black and White exponent, color is one very easy way to get ‘impact’ into your shots. Look for very strong colors and include them in the photos. The three primary colors are red, blue and yellow and if you look through a travel photography book, you will find lots of reds, blues and yellows. You should also intensify the colors by screwing a Polarizing Filter on the end

Dear Hillary, I don’t know if you have time to sit down with your glass of champagne and chocolates to watch the soap movies in the evening. As I read my book and my lady friend is watching these movies I can’t help but notice how these movies give the wrong, or maybe the right impression of Thai people in the land of smiles. They are nearly always screaming at each other or slapping one another round the face and very vindictive. Are most of the Thai wealthy people this callous and two faced, if they are they have a lot to learn. I hope the young children who watch these movies don’t think this is the way of life. I do enjoy your Heart to Heart column and if I am able to save a few baht I will send you champagne and chocolates. Ian Dear Ian, I am very sorry to be so slow in replying but I have only just found your letter under a pile of other stuff, which is dated March 2014. Which explains why no champagne or chocolates! Your observation about the violence in Thai soaps is still valid today. However, you are a farang and shouldn’t be watching them anyway. They’re not made for you! The sweet and gentle image of saffron really does not show Thailand, but neither do the screaming soaps. Dear Hillary, Will you still be here in 2019? I enjoy your bits each week and the advice is sometimes right on. A few weeks back somebody said you should get a raise from your editor and I reckon so. You are doing a public service so you should

of your lens. This richens the color by decreasing the amount of reflection and will give you that deep blue sky you want in your holiday photographs. When we mention ‘Light’ we are referring to the stuff supplied by the celestial light technician - the sun! The two best times to shoot are early in the morning or late in the afternoon. These are sometimes called the “magic hours” by some photographers, but they certainly are the times to shoot. You will get good shadow definition to give solidity to the scene and the two very different colors in the light also give your travel photos that extra something. The early morning ones will have a blue cast, while the late afternoon has distinctly orange hues. In fact, this weekend take the same shot at both those times and see the difference. For those who would like a technical explanation, as the sun approaches the horizon, its light has to pass through a

greater air mass, including ozone, dust and water vapor. Wavelengths at the blue end of the spectrum are scattered and absorbed more than those at the red end of the spectrum, so the sunlight appears to turn yellow, and then red.

get the top dollar. All the ones in the US like Oprah get big money, so you should too. Keep up the good work and all the best with the boss. Hughie Dear Hughie,

Aren’t you just the nicest man! Comparing poor little Hillary with the mighty Oprah! However there are some differences between us, you know. She’s in America, for one! My Petal, if Hillary could get even 10 percent of Oprah’s salary, I’d be on the next plane to Milan for some new threads, so that I wouldn’t have to worry about creatures like letter writers lusting after my flower prints. Every time I hang them out on the line I have to be just so careful when the knicker man is around. Nicks ‘em. Gone, and my undies. He’s a terrible man. You worry me though, when you say you “enjoy my bits” each week. What “bits” are we talking about here? Some of my bits are never discussed here in the column. This is a family newspaper Hughie, and anyway, you’d never get to see them either. As far as a raise is concerned, I’ll show your letter to the editor, but he’ll probably just think I made it up, just as some people think I dream up people. That’s no dream, it’s a nightmare, and some of the damned things are so long and are handwritten! Life’s hard some days! Dear Hillary, I was very interested to read your advice to Valentino a few weeks ago and wondered if perhaps you could help me

Now let’s see how we can add Depth into your photographs. By “depth” we are trying to give your flat photos a 3D appearance. The first way is to use shadow to give depth. The second way is to include people in the shots to give a sense of

perspective. This is the only way you can show just how large any statue is - compare it to the height of a person. Another old photographic “trick” is to include “leading lines” such as a wall, fence or pathway to pull the viewer into the shot. These lines also work best when they follow a diagonal, rather than a straight horizontal or vertical. The final two items of advice are quite simple - time and people. Take your time when you have arrived at the travel destination and walk around statues, memorials, temples and the like. You may see a better view than the usual front on variety. Search for interesting foregrounds and vary the framing and composition. And try as much as possible to include people in your travel shots. Adding one or two people in a photograph adds a point of connection for the viewer, a sense of being there. Have a happy holiday!

too. I have a British motorcycle (a Triumph) and I park it in the garage when I go off shore. I have noticed that when I come back these days, it no longer leaks oil on the garage floor. I have my suspicions that my wife has given it to a Thai boyfriend, and the motorcycle is staying at his place while I’m away. Why she would do this is beyond me as I give her everything she wants, gold chains and everything. I really cannot think of any other reason for the garage floor to be so clean. Do you think the seals have taken up, or what is happening? Is there another logical answer? Nick. Dear Nick, Just what have I brought on my head this time? Now it’s a motorcycle clinic! No, my Petal, the seals on your Triumph have not taken up. Good British bikes always leak oil, so there is a simple answer for you. Have you checked the level of oil in the crankcase? For a logical answer, I think you will find there is no oil left. That is the only feasible explanation with your British bike. Unless it was made in Japan, whereupon it is really a copy bike! Check the serial numbers, Poppet. And talk to the nice man at the motorcycle shop, not Hillary. You could of course, try locking it up while you are away. A good heavy chain, like the gold one your wife wears, with a strong combination lock, should be enough to keep it in the garage, and you will see if the drip is from the motorcycle, or perhaps it is you. By the way, you’re not the phantom knicker knicker are you?

Domestic interest drives growth in Thailand’s east coast marine tourism Thailand’s east coast has seen steady growth in the boating sector in recent years, bolstered by domestic interest in chartering and buying sailing yachts and motor craft, and supported by the region’s key consumer event, the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show, which is set to take place for the seventh time from 29 November to 2 December, 2018 at the Ocean Marina Yacht Club. The increased number of people going out on the water is borne out in Ocean Marina Yacht Club’s own research which shows a staggering 730% increase in the number of day trippers departing Ocean Marina Yacht Club between 2010 and 2017, and in Q1 2018 alone, this figure grew by 66% when compared to the same period in the previous year. This growth of join in and private charters on the east coast is being driven in large part by Thais with Millennials and Gen X together making up 60% of Thais experiencing boating today, with weekends being the most popular time to go out on the water. “The increase in day trips and boat charters on the east

coast has naturally led to more conversions into boat ownership. In terms of nationality, Thais are now the third largest enjoying day trips and charter, while we have certainly seen Thais outpacing other nationalities in boat ownership over the last few years,” said Mr. Scott Finsten, Harbour Master of Ocean Marina Yacht Club, organisers of the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show. “Since the first Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show in 2012, private boat ownership in the marina has grown by 15% and this is largely thanks to interest from the local market. More than 45% of all boats in our marina are Thai-owned, which is a healthy indicator of steady growth in marine tourism in this part of Thailand. We also see strong domestic interest in boating at the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show where 70% of visitors last year were Thai nationals.” On the back of charter growth and increased boat purchases, Ocean Marina Yacht Club completed major expansion works in August 2018 which increased the number of berths by 15% to 455, retaining its position as

Skit morning at the PCEC

Pattaya Players Mara Swankey and Authur McNeil perform the skit “Anniversary” about two happily married individuals who, on their first anniversary, discover they are not so happily married.

It was a wedding anniversary, visit to psychiatrists’ office, and bureaucratic red tape at the Pattaya City Expats Club meeting on Sunday, September 9. All performed in skits by Pattaya’s own amateur theatre group, Pattaya Players who have been treading the boards since 2008. Pattaya Player Doug Campbell began by briefly describing the three skits that their members would be performing in the following order: “The Anniversary,” “Hello Goodbye,” and “DMV.” First up, “The Anniversary” was a scene set a table with a wine bottle and filled wine glasses where an upmarket couple were celebrating their first year of marriage; congratulating themselves at their wondrous achievement of solving all the typical problems that most couples take years to sort out and how far ahead of most relationships. However, as the evening progressed, some wrinkles began to appear with being about taking out the garbage as their appeared to be a distinct difference between the two on when and how one should ask the other to take out the garbage. The husband stood his ground that he should not have sole responsibility and pointed out that he hated the garbage and, anyway, it was jointly created, so it should be jointly dealt with, especially by her. The wife articulated a variety of creative ways of ignoring it and how they could both avoid taking responsibility for it, even to the point of moving into

It ended with “lawyers in the morning it is then” and great they were so mature with a “night night, kiss kiss.” Next came the players for “Hello Goodbye.” Set in a patients’ waiting room at the local psychiatrists’ office where a lady is reading a magazine. A man arrives, takes a seat and also takes a magazine, but peers at the lady to her apparent annoyance. The man gradually plucks up courage and says “hello Sue” which freaks Sue out at not only the approach, but he knew her

the garage and just let it build up as normal in the house. Neither were going to back down on this one! The argument was interrupted by a “wish you well” phone call, to which they both thanked the caller gushing with replies of how happy they were, then the argument resumed and soon realized the impasse was seemingly insurmountable. This bickering and sniping at each other suddenly made them realize that they had discovered this looming marriage wrecking disaster was a boon as it came sooner in their marriage as most couples don’t get to this point for six or seven unsuspecting years. Then their attitude switched to self-congratulation on how lucky they were to have the benefit this revelation now and they started rejoicing as they would never need to endure the agony of spending several years getting to the breaking point like so many of their friends.

temporary license, which has now expired without his receiving the permanent one. His initial inquiries elsewhere reveal they do not have him in the computer system as having completed the driving test. To sort things out, he was sent to desk 7. Initially he was somewhat ignored by the clerk. She responds to his offer to wait by saying, “No, No, carry on I can multi-task.” Angus then gave a detailed and lengthy account of the issue to the still inattentive lady. Finally, she snaps “OK, so what’s the problem?” “In One sentence.” Angus more briefly re-explains the problem and that he had been sent to Desk 7, being assured it would all be sorted out! Despite assurances from Angus that she would be wasting his and her time, she painstakingly rechecked his details into the computer and then exclaimed that there was no record of him. She then says, “So how did you get here with no license then” with his response that he took a taxi. As the skit develops there is some shouting, but eventually a few remedies were discussed, none of which were of any help as the one to retake the driving test was flatly rejected by Angus. The final one was by the clerk was “why not leave Sydney, Brisbane is quite nice.” And Angus replies, “Actually not a bad idea” as he left. Upon completion of the three skits, Doug encouraged all to come and see Pattaya

of going on holidays, shopping for gifts, eating out, living in a romantic apartment with some pets and being really happy. The skit ended when Sue was called to see her doctor with David saying, “Goodbye” and Sue saying “Hello.” The final skit, “DMV” was set in Sydney, Australia, in the Department of Motor Vehicles, although this could apply to any government office anywhere unfortunately. It begins with the lady clerk sitting at desk number 7 and being approached by Angus seeking a resolution to his dilemma. As the skit develops, Angus has a problem. FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 21, 2018 15

On the podium Composer and conductor Gustav Mahler.

A few days ago someone asked on Quora, the question-and-answer website why an orchestra “needs a conductor, when most of time the conductor seems to be doing nothing.” It’s a good question, because the role of the orchestral conductor is not widely understood outside the classical music world. Even less so in the rice fields of Isaan, for someone from the region once asked me why “there’s always a man dancing in front of the orchestra”. The tasks of the conductor depend largely on the type of orchestra. A youth orchestra conductor for example, has much more work than a guest conductor of a professional orchestra. Youth

orchestra conductors usually have to select the music, hire the scores and parts, audition the players, book the rehearsal venue and deal with dozens of minor matters. They might even have to set up all the chairs and music stands in the rehearsal hall. And you might detect the voice of experience here. The conductor also has to find time to study the music. Conductor and orchestra might rehearse for many weeks or even months before a concert performance. In contrast, conductors of professional orchestras sometimes have only a few hours rehearsal time available, occasionally even on the day of the concert.

Conductors have many more musical tasks than merely beating time, partly due to the limitations of musical notation. Instructions in the score are usually in Italian and often vague to say the least. Expressions such as “a bit slower” or “gradually getting faster” are quite common. Printed music doesn’t tell you exactly how loudly or how quietly a piece should be played, how short a staccato note should be, or how a musical phrase should be “shaped”. As a result, one of the most challenging tasks in performing music is not necessarily playing the right notes in the right place, but deciding how to play them. Musical decisions define a performance and it’s the conductor’s job to make them. It takes certain personal qualities to convince the members of a sixty-piece orchestra to “play it my way”. Some conductors manage this with ease, tact and consummate charm. Others are less successful in the personal skills department. There are several wellknown conductors who are heartily detested by members of the orchestras they conduct. But as my father used to say, “No names; no pack-drill.” Competent conductors study the orchestral score for

weeks or months before rehearsals begin. The score shows what every instrument in the orchestra is playing (or is supposed to be playing) whereas the players see only their own part. The conductor is expected to know every detail of the score intimately and some conductors, notably Gustavo Dudamel commit the entire score to memory. If, at a concert it looks as though the conductor isn’t doing much, it’s because most of the work has already been done. Even so, at performance the conductor still needs to give cues, control tempo and dynamics and ensure that the orchestral balance is appropriate. Some conductors have the gift of pulling that little bit extra out of an orchestra at the concert.

James Ross (Duration: 1:10:46; Video: 1080p HD) This is a splendid example of a typical youth orchestra rehearsal. They tend to have a high element of training, so it’s start-stop-start-stop all the way. Notice how the conductor brings a sense of phrase, shape and balance

‘Shadow Tyrants’ is latest Clive Cussler suspense thriller Jeff Ayers Almost 2,000 years ago, an emperor avoided a coup and entrusted nine Scrolls of Knowledge to nine individuals to ensure that none would use the information for nefarious purposes ever again. These Nine Unknown Men’s descendants still maintain the materials, but there are factions inside the group that want to aggressively pursue change for the betterment of mankind and the world. Juan Cabrillo and his team are pretending to be pirates adrift at sea to infiltrate a vessel they know is hiding deadly nerve gas. What they don’t realize is that the mastermind behind the bioweapon has hidden the materials, and he’s working with others on a bold attack that will do more damage than a mere toxin can.

The Nine Unknown Men uncover betrayal from within, and soon even the survivors of the rebellion don’t know whom they can trust. The crew of the Oregon has to save the world again, but on more than one front and possibly without the high-tech weaponry they regularly use. This mission will test them more than anything they have ever confronted. Cussler and action-adventure fans will love this latest Oregon Files novel. New characters to the team are most welcome, and the sheer insanity of the story line will keep readers guessing about what’s going on until the last page of the book. Chapter one has the pacing of the climax of other thriller novels, and the pace from that fast start does not let up until the end. “Shadow Tyrants” is one of the better entries in Cussler’s world. to the music. He address the “how to” aspect of the music and takes the young musicians beyond the printed notes. And notice how James Ross does this with such apparent ease, keeping the musicians on their toes and yet continuously giving encouragement. Incidentally, when Mahler started this work in 1887 he was deputy conductor of the Leipzig Opera Orchestra.

Samuel Barber (1910-1981): Adagio for String Orchestra (Rehearsal). American Symphony Orchestra cond. Leopold Stokowski (Duration: 08.46; Video: 480p) This rehearsal couldn’t be more different. It was filmed

in 1968, as Stokowski and his orchestra were preparing for a concert in New York City. At the time, Stokowski was 85 years old and no time is wasted with superfluous words. Instructions are typically given as the musicians are playing. Stokowski wanted the maximum tone from the string players and continuously pleads “piu, piu” (“more, more”). You might be surprised to know that despite his peculiar accent, Stokowski was of English birth. His father was half Polish and his mother was Irish. He was to become one of the great conductors of the twentieth century. But how do conductors achieve “greatness”? Let’s leave that until next week.

VOL. XXVI No. 38

‘The Predator’ outstays its welcome on Earth Mark Kennedy Los Angeles (AP) - Predators are personal for Shane Black. He was hacked apart by one of the fearsome alien hunters in the first “Predator” movie 31 years ago and now returns to sit in the director’s chair for the latest saga in the franchise. Ready for some payback, Shane? More importantly, will you oversee the destruction of Predators or will you accidentally kill off the series, once and for all? The answer is a little of both. Only a definite article in the title separates the new “The Predator” from the 1987 debut “Predator” starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, and clearly Black is trying to capture the spirit of the testosterone-fueled original with this one led by a decorated sniper played

by Boyd Holbrook. Both flicks share a welcome winking humor. If anyone asks “Everything OK back there?” you can be certain it’s not. The first film featured cartoonishly masculine soldiers in the jungle of Central America tracking and being tracked by a huge and technologically advanced beast with dreadlocks, a face full of mandibles and the ability to both go invisible and humiliate arrogant prey. It echoed the horror of Vietnam and was a clever combination of “Rambo” and “Alien” with humor that would make a locker room blush. (Black played the bespectacled Hawkins and was an early casualty.) Black has returned — with co-writer Fred Dekker — for another loud soldier-versusPredator slice in an American forest — well, actually, thanks, Canada! — but with some twists. Although the filmmakers boast about a much-improved alien, the only noticeable update is the

addition of their tracking canines — that’s right, “space dogs,” as one character jokes. And this time the soldiers are all suffering from PTSD, along with other problems triggered by Tourette’s syndrome, suicidal tendencies and opioid addiction. Viewers get plenty of decapitations, lynchings, head shots and bowels cut open. Black’s filmmaking is oldschool, grounded in ’80s humor, reveling at its overthe-topness and often gleefully thumbing its nose at political correctness. That might be refreshing, but it also can lead to questionable decisions. Like, is it necessary to set one of the battles — complete with assault weapons and explosions — in an elementary school?

And is it wise to portray hurting soldiers this way? They’ve nicknamed themselves “The Loonies” and they are a foulmouthed, messy wild bunch who met in group therapy. They’re portrayed by Trevante Rhodes, Keegan-Michael Key, Thomas Jane, Alfie Allen and Augusto Aguilera, who all deliver a strange brew of toilet humor, classic misogyny and aching vulnerability, but laughing at broken men and mental illness quickly grows uncomfortable. To make matters even worse, another character has Asperger’s syndrome, which is cynically used as a plot point. Professional psychologists are not going to like this film. One change is the addition of some estrogen in the form of Olivia Munn, who plays

not just a scientist but a huge one — “I heard you basically wrote the book on evolutionary biology,” she’s told by a guy in a white lab coat. In a matter of hours, she’s gone from literally shooting herself in the foot to blasting an assault weapon with aplomb. She actually manages to make the dialogue work, as does a thrilling Sterling K. Brown, whose CIA honcho positively swaggers with flashes of pitch-dark humor. He steals the film from the ostensible hero, Holbrook, who fails to sparkle. One welcome cameo is by Jake Busey, who plays a research scientist who studies Predators. It’s an inside joke: He’s the son of Gary Busey, who played a government scientist in “Predator 2” — so Black is keeping the part in the family. Plot-wise, to be honest, not much has changed either — a ragtag group of soldiers face off against an alien hunter. Hardcore fans will welcome the franchise’s return but neutral observers may question why this was committed to celluloid. “What am I looking at?” Munn’s character asks about some data shown to her, but might as well be addressing the film’s audience. “It’s exactly what you think it is,” a scientist responds.

The film created headlines after Munn flagged 20th Century Fox that a minor actor was a registered sex offender, meaning a real predator was in the mix. His scenes were soon cut, but, weirdly, she faced a backlash . If there’s ever a hero here, it’s Munn: On film, as in real life, she’s challenged the all-boys’ network. But Black, who wrote “The Last Action Hero” and several “Lethal Weapon” films, flounders, seeing his gifts as a director tested. Scenes are poorly knitted together, especially toward the end. Time and tempo break down, as if the film were snapping apart at the seams. Ideas are offered — might Predator DNA be mixed with those of a human? Why do Predators keep coming back to Earth? — but quickly abandoned. Some characters die in underwhelming ways, as if the film stock ran out. At the end, Black somewhat arrogantly offers a clear springboard to a sequel. Whether anyone cares for it remains to be seen. “The Predator,” a 20th Century Fox release, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “strong bloody violence, language throughout and crude sexual references.” Running time: 108 minutes. One star out of four.

Poland’s Tomasz Ritter wins Chopin contest on period pianos Monika Scislowska Warsaw, Poland (AP) — Tomasz Ritter of Poland was announced the winner last week of the world’s first Frederic Chopin piano competition performed on instruments from the composer’s era. Japan’s Naruhiko Kawaguci and Poland’s Aleksandar Swigut both won second place. Third place went to Krzysztof Ksiazek of Poland. Dmitry Ablogin of Russia and France’s Antoine de Grolee won honorable mentions. The announcement Sept. 13 by the 11-member international jury came after each

of the six finalists played a Chopin concerto accompanied by the Amsterdambased Orchestra of the 18th Century with conductor Grzegorz Nowak. The competition’s sponsors, the National Frederic Chopin Institute and Poland’s state Radio and Television, want to encourage young pianists to explore the original sound of music written by Poland’s bestloved composer and by his contemporaries. Ritter played on an 1842 Pleyel piano, Swigut on an 1837 Erard, Kawaguci on an 1842 Pleyel and Ksiazek on an 1849 Erard. One of

their characteristics is a softer sound than that of

modern-era pianos. One of the jury members,

Janusz Olejniczak, told The Associated Press that historical instruments require a different playing technique but also broaden the pianist’s skills and approach to music. The winner of the 1st Chopin Competition on Period Instruments collects a 15,000-euro prize as well as concert and recording offers. Second prize is 10,000 euros and third is 5,000 euros. Special prizes from the orchestra went to Ksiazek and Swigut. The orchestra’s musicians specialize in 18th and early 19th century music and play on period instruments.

Chopin was born in 1810 in Zelazowa Wola near Warsaw, to a Polish mother and a French father. He received his music education in Warsaw and started composing and giving concerts there. He left Poland at age 20 and settled in Paris, Europe’s center of art and music at the time. He composed mostly for the piano and much of his work was inspired by Poland’s music, such as the polonaise and the mazurka dances. The competition was part of Poland’s celebrations of 100 years of regained independence. The next one is to be held in 2023.

The Room: ‘Beyond the Gates of Bedlam’

mott@pattayamail.com It is a joy to see there are still proper rock bands coming through in these days of music business industry change. The Room are one such band - shining a light and showing the way. The group was formed in 2010 by Martin Wilson, without doubt one of the best progressive rock vocalists around. Martin is a veteran of the rock business, having been a founding member of the excellent neo-progressive rock band Grey Lady Down and singing on all four of their splendid studio albums and two live albums. But after ten years (19922002) of excellent music and hard slog, Grey Lady Down was finally put to rest, mainly due to a lot of the band members being under different personnel pressures, not their love of the music.

To have a vocalist of Martin Wilson’s quality not working in a band was a tragedy. Fortunately in 2010 a meeting took place between Wilson and Andy Rowe and plans were made and strategies worked out. Steve Anderson the lead guitarist from Grey Lady Down was quickly taken into the fold along with young keyboard player Steve Checkley, fitting in perfectly with his symphonic keyboard leanings. Andrew Rae, a childhood friend of Martin Wilson, was brought in to lend a classy hand to the drum stool. Martin Wilson.

Magical sparks immediately started firing and songs were written. Obviously with two ex-members of Grey Lady Down in the band there are comparisons, but

then it would be very disappointing if there weren’t. 2012 saw the release of their debut album “Open Fire”, chock full of energetic progressive rock songs and excellent musicianship. Sadly in 2013 Andrew Rae had to put down the drum sticks due to tinnitus. A replacement had to be found and Chris York secured the position. York is an excellent drummer and not to be messed with as he is also a Tae Kwon Do instructor.

Steve Anderson.

The next album, “Beyond the Gates of Bedlam”, was released in 2015 and this is where The Room really hit their stride. Doing the job of frontman, Martin Wilson’s vocals dominate proceedings and bring dramatic phrasing to the stories with wonderful vibrato in his singing. This is beautifully illustrated in the opening song “Carrie” and also “My Friend Jack”. But this is no solo band

and the keyboards are classic and full of frantic chords, played with intensity and atmosphere that guides all the songs along their many different paths, best emphasized on “Full Circle”. “As Crazy As It Seems” is as near to a power ballad as The Room get, but it also allows Steve Anderson to show off his axe chops. The rhythm section as usual does not perhaps get the credit it deserves, but it’s behind every great band.

The Room are now signed to Bad Elephant Music and there is a third album on the way as well as multiple festival appearances coming up, so hopefully 2018-2019 will be the time The Room take over. They certainly deserve it. Anybody who likes classic Genesis or Marillion will enjoy The Room and the new lick of paint they give to melodic progressive rock with fine body. Mott the Dog Rating: 5 Stars The Room: Martin Wilson - vocals Steve Anderson - guitar Chris York - drums Steve Chickley - keyboards Andy Rowe - bass guitar Track List: Carrie Full Circle My Friend Jack As Crazy As It Seems She Smiles The Book Masquerade Splinter The Hunter Bedlam Note: Written By Mott The Dog from the gates of Jameson’s The Irish Pub, Soi AR, North Pattaya.

Beating King of Pop, The Eagles have No.1 album of all-time Mesfin Fekadu New York (AP) — The Eagles’ greatest hits album has moonwalked past Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” to become history’s best-selling album of all-time in the U.S. The Recording Industry Association of America told The Associated Press that the Eagles’ album — “Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975” — is now certified 38x platinum, which means sales and streams of the album have reached 38 million copies. The album was released in 1976 and pushes Jackson’s “Thriller,” which is 33x

released in 1977, is now 26x platinum and makes it the third best-selling album of all-time.

Eurovision says Tel Aviv will host 2019 song contest Aron Heller Jerusalem (AP) — The Eurovision Song Contest has announced that next year’s competition will be held in Tel Aviv, clearing up some of the political controversy surrounding Israel’s hosting of the 2019 competition. The Israeli government had initially insisted on holding the popular event in Jerusalem. But following a backlash over the U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as its capital and a subsequent fear of boycotts it dropped

the demand to host the world’s largest live music event. The Eurovision said it chose Tel Aviv, Israel’s cultural and commercial epicenter, over Jerusalem and the southern city of Eilat because of its “creative and compelling bid.” Israel won the Eurovision this year with a flashy pop tune called “Toy” by the charismatic, previously unknown singer Netta Barzilai, who dazzled viewers with her feminist lyrics, unconventional appearance and signature chicken dance. Her victory earned Israel

the right to host next year’s contest. The Eurovision says its semifinals will be held in Tel Aviv on May 14 and 16 followed by the Grand Final on May 18. The Eurovision has previously provided Israel with some cultural touchstones. “Hallelujah” became the country’s unofficial national song after it won the contest for Israel when it hosted the event in the late 1970s, and Dana International became a national hero and global transgender icon when she won with “Diva” in 1998.

The last time RIAA tallied sales for the Eagles’ greatest hits album was in 2006, when it said it was 29x platinum. Sales and streams for “Thriller” were last updated last year. “We are grateful for our families, our management, our crew, the people at radio and, most of all, the loyal fans who have stuck with us through the ups and downs of 46 years. It’s been quite a ride,” Eagles’ Don Henley said in a statement. RIAA’s platinum status

was once equivalent to selling one million albums or songs, but in 2013 the company began incorporating streaming from YouTube, Spotify and other digital music services to determine certification for albums and songs. Now 1,500 streams of an album is equivalent to an album sale. Also, 10 song downloads = 1 album sale. The Eagles, who formed in Los Angeles in the early 1970s, mastered the mix of rock ‘n’ roll and country

music, and the band’s hits — including “Hotel California” and “Take It Easy — became part of the soundtrack of that decade. They broke up in 1980, coming back together 14 years later with Henley and Glenn Frey being the only remaining original members. Frey died in 2016, but the Grammy-winning band remains on tour. The band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 and received the Kennedy Center Honor in 2016.

Washington (AP) - Nature expresses its fury in sundry ways. Two deadly storms Hurricane Florence and Typhoon Mangkhut - roared ashore on the same day, half a world apart, but the way they spread devastation was as different as water and wind. Storms in the western Pacific generally hit with much higher winds and the people who live in their way are often poorer and more vulnerable, Princeton University hurricane and climate scientist Gabriel Vecchi said Saturday. That will likely determine the type of destruction. Mangkhut made landfall Friday on the northeastern tip of Luzon Island in the Philippines with top-of-thescale Category 5 winds of

165 mph. Florence had weakened to a Category 1 storm with 90 mph winds by the time it arrived at North Carolina’s coast. Yet a day after landfall the faster-moving Mangkhut was back out over open water - weakened, but headed across the South China Sea toward China. Florence, meanwhile, was still plodding across South Carolina at a pace slower than a normal person walks. By Saturday morning, it had already dumped more than 30 inches (76 centimeters) of rain, a record for North Carolina. Experts say Mangkhut may well end up being the deadlier storm. As of Saturday afternoon, the death count in the Philippines was a bit higher, although still far below that of other storms

that have hit the disasterprone island nation. And after Mangkhut headed toward the densely populated southeast coast of China, it is likely to cause more death and destruction. But Florence’s watery insured damage total will eventually be higher, Ernst Rauch, head of climate research for the world’s largest reinsurer Munich Re, told German media. That’s because of a combination of geography, climatic conditions and human factors. The western Pacific has two-and-a-half times more storms that reach the minimum hurricane strength of 74 mph. It has three-and-ahalf times more storms that

reach major hurricane strength of 111 mph, and three times more accumulated energy out of those hurricanes, an index that measures not just strength and number of storms but how long they last, according to more than 65 years of storm data. So far this year there have been 23 named storms in the western Pacific and 10 in the Atlantic, both regions more than 30 percent busier than average years. Hurricanes and typhoons are the same type of storm; both are tropical cyclones, but those that occur in the Pacific west of the International Date Line are called typhoons. The water in the western Pacific is warmer, and warm water fuels storms. There are also only a few pieces of land to get in the way and weaken them, said University of Miami hurricane researcher Brian McNoldy. “If we are ever going to have a Category 6 (a speculated-on level that’s above current measurement tools), the western Pacific is where it’s going to be,” said meteorologist Ryan Maue of weathermodels.com. The Philippines tends to get hit nearly every year, the Carolinas far less frequently though with lots of close calls, Maue said. That shows another big difference in the storms. Mangkhut formed

1 brings water, the other, wind further south and stayed south - over warmer water. Florence was out of the tropics when it hit land. Because of that, Florence was weakened by the dry air and upper level winds of the higher latitudes. Not so the more southerly Mangkhut, which Maue said, “essentially had a perfect environment to intensify to a Category 5 and stay there.” “Mangkhut and Florence are certainly different animals,” said Colorado State University hurricane researcher Phil Klotzbach. Because Florence is moving so slowly, he said, it will dump more rain than Mangkhut, which is named for the Thai word for the mangosteen fruit. Both storms have lasted a long time, especially Florence which formed all the way over near Africa 15 days before landfall, McNoldy said. Both storms cover a large area, but Mangkut still dwarfs Florence. Mangkhut’s tropical storm force winds stretched more than 325 miles from the center, while Florence’s spread about 195 miles, Klotzbach said. Economics also play a role in a storm’s impact. As a developing country, the Philippines is much poorer than the southeastern United States, which means houses

tend to be less sturdy and first responders less well equipped, among other factors. This is one reason why, when disaster does strike, the effects can be devastating. In 2013, one of the most powerful storms on record, Typhoon Haiyan, killed 7,300 people and displaced more than 5 million when it swept across the islands of the central Philippines. Straddling the famous Pacific Ring of Fire, the Philippines is also bedeviled by volcanoes and earthquakes, and while there are considerable patches of poverty in North and South Carolina, it is not the same as the rural area where Mangkhut hit.

Munich Re’s Rauch said about 30 to 50 percent of storm damage is usually insured in the United States but often less than 10 percent in developing countries, meaning nine-tenths of the people hit will end up shouldering a bigger economic burden. In the United States, “you can’t move houses, but people can move out of the way,” reflecting mounting damages from storms and often lower losses in life, Vecchi said.

As the world warms from the burning of fossil fuels, the globe will see both more extremely intense storms like Mangkhut and wetter storms like Florence, Vecchi said. (Photo right) Rescuers carry a body recovered from a landslide caused by Typhoon Mangkhut in Itogon, Benguet province, northern Philippines on Monday, Sept. 17. Itogon Mayor Victorio Palangdan said that at the height of the typhoon’s onslaught Saturday afternoon, dozens of people, mostly miners and their families, rushed into an old threestory building in the village of Ucab. The building, a former mining bunkhouse that had been transformed into a chapel, was obliterated when part of a mountain slope collapsed. (AP Photo/Aaron Favila)

Authorities reacting to flooding in Ratchaburi and Chachoengsao Ratchaburi, 17th September 2018 (NNT) – Over 20 homes along Khlong Kwae Aom in Ratchaburi province were inundated on the weekend after a local waterway became critically swollen by heavy rains in the region. Ratchaburi Governor Chayawut Chantara visited the flood affected area on Monday and passed out survival bags. The overflowing canal is connected to Mae Klong River, which took on a large quantity of water during heavy rainfall on September 15. Funds have also been provided to the disabled and elderly in the area to provide further assistance.

The Mae Klong River has now stabilized but authorities remain on alert to provide aid to residents impacted by the deluge and to respond to further flooding. In Chachoengsao, Governor Suwit Kamdee engaged in a teleconference with all of the province’s 11 districts today, to appraise the water situation following 2-3 days of heavy rain and reports of widespread flooding, mostly having an impact on roadways. The governor instructed district administrators to make regular announcements on the situation to keep citizens informed, assist them in moving their belongings to

higher ground, track weather developments and set up round-the-clock security where floods have hit. So far, the province’s Nam Preaw district has reported that six villages in one subdistrict have been hit by flooding, 14 villages in three sub-districts were flooded in Plangyao district, 10 villages in two sub-districts in Sanam Chaikhet district were flooded and nine villages in one subdistrict in Bang Klah district were flooded. Ratchaburi Governor Chayawut Chantara visited flood affected areas on Monday and passed out survival bags.

Moore reaches podium for first time PSC Golf from The Growling Swan Monday, Sept. 10, Khao Kheow – Stableford 1st Phillip Moore (17) 43pts 2nd Martin Kempton (11) 40pts 3rd Steve Younger (15) 40pts Near Pins: A3 & A5 Gordon Clegg; B3 & B8 Alex Field. Long Putts: A9 Alex Field, B9 Phillip Moore. Well it was back to fourteen golfers for our trip to Khao Kheow. It’s a very good course but at times a little too expensive for us. Playing from the yellow tees we attacked A & B. We were told no carts on course but this lasted only for the front nine. On the back nine the sun had dried out the course and it was back to normal. The course was in top nick as you would expect from these guys. Everything was better than good which gave the opportunity for some good golf with some great scores. If you didn’t have forty points plus you were not in it. The weather was on our side and golfers on course were few and far between. With the turn out we had we

(L to R) Steve Younger, Phil Moore and Martin Kempton with young Thomas Kempton holding Dino the dinosaur.

could only play the one flight, with all the novelties in play. Maybe we saw a change at the top, Phil Moore (been playing a few weeks with us now) came out with an excellent score of 43 points leaving all and sundry in his wake. Second and third were decided by the countback (these guys were a further 3 points behind the winner). Martin Kempton and Steve Younger ended up with the same amount of points, so off to the countback it was.

Steve Younger who has little luck with countbacks did not change his luck leaving Martin finishing in second spot.

Thursday, Sept. 13, King Naga - Stableford. 1st Bernie McCart (33) 43pts 2nd Phil Moore (17) 41pts 3rd Keith Buchanan (14) 39pts 4th Glenn Henriksen (11) 37pts 5th Gordon Clegg (24) 37pts Near Pins: 5th Denis Steele, 7th Martin Kempton, 12th Keith Buchanan, 16th Glenn Henriksen.

Bernie McCart (right) with Graeme Laurie.

Long Putts: 9th Denis Steele, 18th Gordon Clegg. Nineteen golfers saddled up today for a trip to King Naga (the old Rayong CC). This course has become quite popular and let’s not kid ourselves here, it’s the price firstly and then little OB and not that much water coming into play, and that adds to the attraction. The course was in good nick, fairways had been mowed (before the rains came), and there was no sign of the coring of

the greens that we experienced the last time we played. We played from the yellow tees and with the weather the way it was, it made for a pleasant day for golf. We had an incident that occurred on about the 15th hole that is worthy of a mention. As we were teeing off there was an unusual noise coming from off the course. It turned out it was a small dog that had fallen into a creek and was having trouble getting out, and with the water levels rising the

dog was finding this even more difficult. Stuart Rifkin, with no regard for his personal safety, dived in and within moments he had the dog by the scruff of the neck as a huge salt water croc lunged at Casa. Rifkin was barely able to get his feet and get out unscathed, if not for the efforts of his playing partners god only knows how this would have ended up. One of the most selfless efforts/acts that one has ever witnessed! Well back to the golf; nineteen players gave us the one flight only and we did have all the novelties in play. It was Bernie McCart that got thru the crocodile attack on Casa to take the prize in today’s event. Having played with Bernie, on several occasions, today was by far the best that I had seen Bernie play, 43 points was what he finished with. Second past the post was in a bit of form at present Phil Moore with Keith Buchanan filling third place. Fourth & fifth placing’s had to go the countback with Glenn Henriksen getting the nod over Gordon Clegg.

Cobbam & Smith battle to the line PSC Golf Pattaya Links Golf Society Wednesday, Sept. 12, Khao Kheow A & B Stableford A Flight 1st Les Cobban (9) 40pts 2nd Colin Smith (13) 40pts 3rd Paul Smith (4) 39pts 4th Wayne Peppernell (15) 37pts B Flight 1st Len Jones (29) 36pts 2nd Ken Ishikawa (21) 36pts 3rd Mike Firkin (24) 33pts 4th Andy Stormouth (18) 32pts Near Pins (par 3s): Wayne Peppernell (A3), Peter Henshaw (A5), Sunny Khanna (B3), and Steve Mahoney (B8) Long Putts: Les Cobban (A9), Paul Smith (B9). Near Pin (Par 5s): Paul Smith (A2), Les Cobban (B2). Heavy overnight rain eased to a drizzle as golfers made their way to Links Bar for our appointment at Khao Kheow Country Club. As expected when there is the hint of rain about, there were some late cancellations, although there was one message at 5.05am! Wake up call for Len. This left a healthy

field of 26 players. A phone call to the course before we departed confirmed our suspicions that carts were allowed only on the paths and, once we hit the fairways, it was certainly a no brainer by the KK management, as the course had also received overnight rain. Considering this, Khao Kheow A and B nines were in very good condition, and the greens seemed to suffer no ill effects from the wet, as they played as good as ever here, perhaps a tad slower initially. We might have expected some below average scores for today, but we would have been wrong, as there were some excellent scores turned in. A Flight saw a bunch up at the top with Les Cobban and Colin Smith going to the countback to decide who had the better 40 points. Les managed 21 to Colin’s 17 back nine to take the win. Third spot was won by Paul Smith scoring a sometimes winning score of 39 points, and fourth place was a surprised

Colin Smith (centre) with Frank Carnovale (left) and Bryan Barrell (right).

Wayne Peppernell on 37 points. After hearing the first three scores, he reckoned 37 was not good enough! B Flight didn’t make it to the heady 40 points mark, but we can certainly take nothing away from Len Jones and Ken Ishikawa who both had 36 points, with Len taking the win on countback. Third place went to Mike Firkin with a neat 33 points, while visitor Andy Stormouth rounded out the podium with 32 points on a countback.

Best nines by non-winners came from Tommy Marshall (front 20pts) and John Pierrel (back 17pts).

Friday, Sept. 14, Plutaluang – Stableford A Flight 1st Petur Petursson (5) 38pts 2nd Steve Truelove (7) 38pts 3rd Peter Kissick (11) 35pts 4th Colin Smith (13) 35pts B Flight 1st Garry Hookey (19) 34pts 2nd Donal McGuigan (19) 33pts

3rd Colin Service (17) 32pts 4th Mike Firkin (24) 31pts Near Pins: Steve Truelove (E2), Mike Honey (E5), Garry Hookey (S4), Mike Firkin (S7) Links Bar has not been to this course for a very long time, and it was thought a visit to check it out was worth a try. The prices are some of the lowest around and there are four nines to choose from (well you don’t actually get a choice.) Today we played the South and East combination from the white tees with two flights split at 15. Considering the amount of rain lately, the course was in very good condition with fairways lush but, of course, wet in places. Some lark reckons he found some dry spots.. The greens here have never been called quick but they are in very good condition and play truly with just enough pace, however, there were some during the round that did vary from that somewhat.

We can’t imagine the conditions favored them especially, but of the three single figure handicappers in the field, two of them had to be split by countback with 38 points each. Petur Petursson had one more point on the second nine to beat Steve Truelove into second place. The next two places went to Welshmen with Peter Kissick taking third on countback over Colin Smith, also winning a countback over unlucky George Muller All scored a very handy 35 points. B flight was cut and dried with Garry Hookey having a nice little win with 34 points. In second place was Donal McGuigan scoring a consistent 33 points ahead of Colin Service on 32 and Mike Firkin with 31 points. The third member of the single figure handicaps, Garry Barker (3) also picked up a prize for having the best front nine for non winners with 20 points while Wayne Peppernell had the best back nine on 16.

A very fast round today with no hold ups and our first two groups, which were three balls, got round in three hours. Our four balls got in around after three and a half hours. The course was in excellent condition, but the same

couldn’t be said for the scoring with none of our group being able to play to their handicaps. The best score we got was from Donal McGuigan who won his first Medal with a net seventy three. The next four places had to be decided on countbacks, some of which went down to the last six holes as they all had net seventy fours. Kevin O’Sullivan came second, Stuart Brown came third, Peter Henshaw came fourth and Craig Hitchens got the fifth and last place for today.

Thursday, Sept. 13, Burapha - Stableford 1st Pete Seil (7) 41pts 2nd Nik Evans (14) 33pts 3rd Lyle Blaw (12) 33pts 2’s: Jon Batty. When we arrived at Burapha we started out on the B course and soon caught up with two five-balls and after

Hakozaki storms to victory PSC Golf from the Bunker Boys Near pins went to Jimmy Carr, Neil Carter, and Steve Durey who despite having a Barry Crocker of a round managed to snare two.

Monday, Sept. 10, Laem Chabang B & C Stableford

Andy Nesbitt & Willem Lasonder.

Tuesday, Sept. 11, Plutaluang - Stableford Tuesday we went to Plutaluang where we played the North & West course. We saw Andy Nesbitt this week back after several months. This week we had only a small group, but we had a good competition. In the morning the weather didn’t look good, but later we had a perfect day with clouds, sun and wind. The course was in pretty good condition after all the rain in the night before. Andy Nesbitt had some problems on the front nine, but on the back nine he recovered and won with 36 points. Second was Willem Lasonder with 31 points. The near the pins went to Willem Lasonder.

Thursday, Sept, 13, Pleasant Valley - Stableford Pleasant Valley was our venue for Thursday and we played a 5-ball on the B & C nines. The course was in good condition but there was a big difference between the greens on the two loops. On the B loop greens were fast and the C loop slow. After a night with heavy rain, we were afraid to find a very wet course, but to our relief the course was no wetter than normal. As it turned out, we had a nice sunny day with a nice breeze. It was an exciting round without top scores. It was again Andy who played a strong back nine and he came third with 29 points, beating Paddy Devereux on the countback. Willem Lasonder played a strong back nine and won with 36 points. Second was Martin Hayes with 34 points. The near pins were won by Paddy Devereux and Willem Lasonder.

that the play was painfully slow. A lady Thai marshal eventually came over to us and when we explained what was happening she kindly suggested that we move to the C nine and what a difference that made. After spending over two hours forty minutes on the first nine went round the back nine in under one hour forty five minutes, a difference of one full hour on the two nines. Although the course was very wet and playing long and the bunkers almost unplayable after the torrential rain on the previous night, we still got one really excellent score today. Pete Seil went round in two over par gross to score forty one points. He came out a very clear winner by eight points. Our next best scores were thirty three points and here Nik Evans won the countback to come second. Lyle Blaw got the third and last place for today.

A group of eight Bunker Boys joined about one hundred and twenty other golfers for a PSC sponsored event at the Laem Chabang course. As you would expect with this number of golfers play was slow despite a reminder on each scorecard to be mindful of the speed of play. With the benefit of hindsight, the pick clean and place rule should have been implemented from the outset as the course was very wet; however, by the time it became evident it was already too late. Despite having some of our best players in the field the Bunker Boys didn’t cover themselves in glory with only Geoff Parker and Les Cobban taking a near pin each. Our best score was courtesy of Les with thirty-five points followed by Michael Brett on thirty-three and Jimmy Carr on thirty-two. Les Cobban also managed to snare a lucky door prize, whilst Stuart Brown lamented the fact that he wasn’t able to choose his favorite number which as luck would have it did win a prize. No prizes for guessing what his favorite number was. Prior to the presentation of prizes at the Links Bar, a smorgasbord of fine food was available which was quickly demolished by some hungry golfers.

Wednesday, Sept. 12, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford 1st Takeshi Hakozaki (12) 39pts 2nd Nial Glover (19) 38pts 3rd Neil Carter (11) 33pts Near Pins: Jimmy Carr, Neil Carter, and Steve Durey (2).

Friday, Sept. 14, Mt. Shadow - Stableford

Takeshi Hakozaki.

Despite officially being in monsoon season for some time it’s only now that we are experiencing the real thing. Regular heavy overnight rain is making courses very wet with the requirement for pick, clean, and place becoming the norm. Today there was occasionally the requirement to move away from casual water to achieve a dry stance. Heavy overcast skies are normal also but when the sun does break through the humidity skyrockets. All of these conditions were in play today, however, had no ill effects on Takeshi Hakozaki who stormed home to take first place with a superb thirtynine points. His round included a couple of easy birdies and a few missed opportunities to break forty. Nial Glover had his best round for some time and would have expected to win with a very good thirty-eight points. No doubt all eyes will now be upon him as his score indicates his handicap may be a bit generous. The rest of the field were way back with Neil Carter taking third on thirty-three points.

1st Michael Brett (14) 39pts 2nd Jimmy Carr (15) 37pts 3rd Neil Carter (11) 34pts Once again the weather gods smiled upon us with rain overnight and into the morning but fine again for golf. Sooner or later I feel a drenching coming on. The Mountain Shadow course was in good condition despite rain. Nevertheless the pick, clean and place rule applied. A few of the greens were a bit substandard, particularly the sixteenth where a bit of repair work was augmented by the course dogs. The wind was very light so conditions were on the hot and humid side. Scoring was above average today on what is normally considered a difficult course on which to accumulate a good score. Neil Carter took third place with thirty-four points. Jimmy Carr returned a card of thirty-seven which most days would be enough to win, alas it was only good enough for second. The winner on the day was Michael Brett who despite an average front nine of sixteen picked up his game on the back with twenty-three points to return a total of thirty-nine points. Near pins went to Trevor Priestley, Mashi Kaneta, Geoff Parker, and Neil Carter. Mashi Kaneta made a welcome return to the Bunker Boys for a game prior to next week’s visit to Hua Hin with a combined Tropical/Bunker Boys group visiting this very desirable golfing destination for four rounds at Majestic Creek, Banyan, Black Mountain and Springfield.x

Smith reigns supreme Traveller’s Rest Golf Group On Saturday, September 8 we headed across the bay to the beautiful city of Hua Hin where we commenced our 6th annual TRGG King of the Mountain tour. The “Bookie” was soon open for business and a flurry of activity prevailed as the favourites were announced and the “dark horses” were revealed. With a field of twenty four players it wasn’t going to be easy to pick a winner. The following day we arrived at the Majestic Creek golf course for the opening round and at close of play two dark horses were leading the pack with 38 points apiece Julian Thomas and Derek Thorogood. If Julian won the bookie was dead in the water! Monday was day two of the tournament and the

venue was the magnificent Banyan course. Standing on the first tee looking down at the beautifully manicured fairways with the flag fluttering in the distance it’s as close to golf heaven as you can get. After today’s rounds John Welch had quietly emerged from the field with scores of 34 and 35 and was sitting nicely in third position, however some other players were also making their moves and Colin Smith, one of the TRGG’s most consistent golfers had shot 40 points and was sitting outright leader going into the third round. Wednesday saw the leader board going up and down and Colin Smith had fallen off the pace; scoring only 30

points, but Paul Durkan, Jacob Cummings and John Goudge (all three off single figures) were now serious contenders. Julian Thomas meanwhile scored another 37 points which put him back in first place and put the bookie back in the coronary ward. Thursday was the day of reckoning and for the first time we played at the Palm Hills course. John Goudge shot a brilliant 41 points, Colin Smith was gaining with a fine 38 points and Jacob Cummings was making his move with 37. However all eyes were on Julian Thomas who’s consistent rounds still had him in the top three and seeded in the last group for the final round at Black Mountain.

Davies doubles up The Jomtien Golf Society Monday, Sept. 10, Crystal Bay Stableford There was thunder and lightning as we arrive at the clubhouse and looking over the course the B9 green was flooded so we all decide to give it 30 minutes. In the event, it all cleared in 20 minutes and we teed playing ‘pick, clean and place’, although there were quite a few holes where it was not needed and the greens were in a very slick condition. Two 36’s came in for the two divisions with Nik Evans winning division 1 and Peter Davies division 2. Paul Young was second in the top flight, beating Paul Butler on a 17/14 back-nine countback after they both came in with 33 points each.

Alan Bissell took the silver place in division 2, one point behind Peter Davies and Tom Preshaw finished third with 33 points. Near pins went to (Div 1) Marc Brunner (2) and Nik Evans, and (Div 2) Peter Davies (2). No ‘2’s in either division today.

Wednesday, Sept. 12, Pattana - Stableford Stormy weather yet again as we drove up the 7 but as we arrived there was no problem and we teed off bang on time. We were playing the A and B nines today with the cut set at 11-17 and 19+ in division 2. The Vanuatu ferry captain Peter Davies recorded the highest score of the day, winning division 2 with 38 points. Leo Adam was second on 35

and Steve Harris came in third with 34 points. Willy Van Heetvelde won division 1 with 35 points ahead of Paul Butler in second place who beat Bob Poole on a 17/16 back nine countback after they both came in with 31 points. Near pins were claimed by (Div 1) Steve Godfrey and Bob Poole, and (Div 2) Alan Bissell and Peter Davies (2). Alan Bissell birdied A8 and Peter Davies A3 to split the rollover ‘2’s kitty in division 2 and there was another rollover in division 1.

Friday, Sept. 14, Eastern Star Stableford After a close inspection on the course ‘pick, clean and place’ was implemented today from the first tee. There was no run on the fairways but the greens were still very slick, which surprised everybody. We had an exact cut as of Wednesday in the two divisions and 34 points was the highest score of the day, with Colin Aspinall beating John Hughes on a 18/16 countback to win division 1. Steve Godfrey finished third with 29 points. 32 points was the best score in division 2 with the organizer winning, a 15/15, 9/9 ,5/5 and 4/2 countback while Tony Thorne won another countback over John Carlin after they came in with 30 points. Near pins went to (Div 1) Marc Brunner, Steve Godfrey and Vern Raachau, and (Div 2) Colin Aspinall and Frank Kelly. Geoff Randall birdieds the 13th for the only ‘2’ of the day and sole possession of the division 2 pot.

Black Mountain is one of Thailand’s number one courses and played host to the group on Friday. The groups were seeded with possible winners in group five and the likely winners in group six which consisted of John Goudge, Jacob Cummings, Colin Smith and Julian Thomas. At the completion of the first nine holes it was still anybody’s game. John had turned with the best score of 21points, Colin 19, Jacob 19 and Julian 16. The pressure was on and it looked as though it was going to be one of the closest finishes in six years. But the man who eats pressure for breakfast and is affectionately known as “Cool hand Luke” blew his playing partners away on the back nine with an incredible score of 21 points. The unflappable Colin Smith secured his first ever TRGG honours board win and earned him the prestigious title of the 2018 “King of the Mountain Champion”. Congratulations and well done to a deserved winner. In second place was John Goudge and taking the bronze overall was Julian Thomas.

Mashi and JD shine at Pattavia PSC Golf from the Tropical Golf Group Tuesday, Sept. 11, Pattavia Century – Stableford After getting to their drives on the first hole our opening 3-ball found soft ground and mud on the ball so quickly sent word back that “Ball in Hand, fairways and closely mown areas” would be the rule of the day. It turned out to be a welcome decision. About the only difference since our last visit was that the greens had been scarified and sanded. The grass had been allowed to grow a little so the speed was a bit slower and putts needed to be hit with a bit of authority to hold their line. Of course that becomes tricky at Pattavia as even with the slightly longer cut, downhill putts cannot be hit with authority. In addition and most likely due to the almost daily rains, the bunkers were very firm and held some water and silt. Still a very playable and enjoyable course. A good pace under blue skies and with a slight breeze saw the group showered and headed back to Pattaya earlier than usual to learn the results of the day. Mashi Kaneta (c/h 15) sat atop the podium with an excellent 38 points and was followed closely in 2nd place by John Davis (11)

with 37 points, John Pierrel (12) in 3rd with 35 and visiting Eddie Kost (16) getting the final nod with 34. Honorable mentions by way of our “Best 9s, nonwinners” awards went to Don Carmody and Frank Xin.

Friday, Sept. 14, The Emerald – Stableford Despite morning rain, the radar today showed the possibility of a drying period and based on this info the group decided it was worth at least a drive to the course to check conditions before making the final call. When all arrived and after another check of the radar it was decided to “Go”. So pay up the daily fees of 1350 baht “all-in” (a good deal), and

our three groups hit the 1st hole with vigor playing “ball in hand” through the green. With drizzly conditions, soggy ground under foot, some puddles in bunkers, and damp slower greens, how would the group do? With a reasonable pace of play, mixed periods of light or no drizzle, the groups all finished in good time and were showered and headed back to Pattaya and BJ’s for the results and presentation. The winner on the day and the only player to play to his handicap with 36 points was John Pierrel (c/h 12). Following John up the podium steps in order were Bob Britton (13) with 33 points, Dick Warberg (23) on 31 and Don Carmody (28) with 30.

Monday, Sept. 10, Phoenix Gold Stableford Phoenix with no rain and carts on the fairways so no winter rules applied, even though there was a bit of mud on the ball from time to time. We played Mountain and Ocean loops which are in fantastic condition, although the rough on Mountain is still as rough as hell. With a slightly depleted field today just 3 groups played. Welcome back to John Anderson, him being back for just a few days then Bahrain to work. Out of the 3 groups that played there were only 2 golfers that didn’t make 30 plus points. Taking 3rd spot today was Bill Marsden with 34 points, 2nd went to Capt. Bob with 35 points and the only lady in the field Miss Sasicha took 1st with 36 points. The only ‘2’ of the day came from John Anderson.

Wednesday, Sept. 12, Green Valley Stableford It was raining when we got to Green Valley and we had

Lloyd Shuttleworth playing off his 4 handicap and scoring 34 points. Graham Beaumont just got over the line with a fine 35 points to take 2nd, but it was the Captain’s day today. Bob Philp with just 22 putts scoring 42 points to take line honours.

a lot of cancellations due to the increment weather. But the diehard golfers among us stayed around for 30 minutes and the rain disappeared. It turned out to be a good day with overcast skies, although very humid. The course was in great condition. We played winter rules as carts were allowed on cart path only, which in retrospect was probably generous as the fairways were as dry as a bone.

When it stopped, we didn’t get anymore and it turned into a good day. The course even after so much rain and not being able to find too many dry spots was still in surprisingly good condition. The scoring wasn’t too bad either, winter rules applied with take a drop as close as you could to get relief from

Close win means Alvarez and Golovkin could do it again Tim Dahlberg Las Vegas (AP) — The fight was so close at the final bell that no one in the arena — including Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez — knew who would leave the ring with the middleweight title belts. It was Alvarez, though by the slimmest of margins. He won the last round on two scorecards last Saturday night on the Las Vegas Strip to hand Golovkin the first loss of his career in a fight that more than lived up to its advance billing. To settle who is really the best, though, they may just have to do it a third time. And that’s fine with both fighters, who have now gone 24 rounds together with little but a few points on the scorecards to separate them. “If the people want us to do it again, let’s do it again,” Alvarez said. “It would be great to have a third fight,” Golovkin said.

A third fight will almost certainly happen, and for that fight fans have to be grateful. Alvarez and Golovkin showcased their skills — and their sport — at the highest level in a fight that one judge scored a draw and two others had Alvarez by a narrow 115-113 score. Both fighters thought they had won. Both fighters probably deserved a win. But it was Alvarez, the Mexican hero, who proudly carried the belts out of the ring after a bruising 12 rounds that ended with both fighters bloodied and bruised before a roaring crowd of 21,965. “It’s one of the happiest days of my life,” said Alvarez, who fought Golovkin to a draw a year earlier and had to deal with a positive test for a performance enhancing drug while preparing for the rematch. It wasn’t so happy for Golovkin, the slugger from Kazakhstan who for years walked through whoever was put in front of him.

Golovkin rallied in the final rounds to make the fight close, only to listen in disbelief once again as he wasn’t declared the winner. “I feel like I’m a champion but he’s also a champion,” Golovkin said. “It was a fight of two champions tonight.” Indeed it was, as Alvarez abandoned his strategy from the first fight to box moving forward against Golovkin. It was a risky strategy but paid off — though just barely.

Though Triple G and his handlers were careful not to criticize the decision, promoter Tom Loeffler admitted later that it was tough to win a decision in an arena packed with Alvarez fans on Mexican Independence Day weekend. “I don’t know if we can win a decision in Las Vegas,” Loeffler said. Ringside punch stats showed a close fight, though they favored Golovkin by a small

margin. Golovkin was credited with landing 234 of 879 punches while Alvarez landed 203 of 622. Unlike many close decisions in boxing, though, there was no huge outcry, largely because the fight was almost too close to call. “It was me who pushed him back, me who was most aggressive,” Alvarez said through an interpreter. “Unfortunately we didn’t get the knockout, but we got the victory.”

Alvarez said before the fight that he was angry with Golovkin over his beliefs that Alvarez was juiced for their first fight, and would try and knock him out. But few believed he would be the aggressor in a fight against a boxer with big power in both hands. He was just that, though, in a spirited fight that had no knockdowns but plenty of action. Alvarez controlled the middle rounds as Triple G seemed to tire, but Golovkin fans thought their fighter pulled it out late. Alvarez said afterward that he wanted to fight again in December, and could against David Lemieux, the Canadian who scored a first-round knockout over Ireland’s Gary O’Sullivan on the undercard. With the lure of big money in a third fight with Golovkin, the two could meet again in May for a trilogy that is rare in boxing these days. For now, though, Alvarez can celebrate his biggest win at a crucial time in his career as he tries to cement his status as a storied Mexican fighting great. “It’s very important for me to have a victory for my country,” he said. “This victory will give a lot of pride to my country.”

Madrid (AP) — Simon Yates won his first Grand Tour title after a largely ceremonial ride into Madrid in the final stage of the Spanish Vuelta last Sunday, giving British riders a sweep of the season’s three biggest races. The 26-year-old Englishman was dominant throughout the three-week race across Spain, thriving on the toughest climbs and the flattest routes to secure the victory after a last stage in which riders didn’t attack the leaders under cycling tradition. Yates’ Vuelta title means Britain has swept the three Grand Tours. Geraint Thomas of Wales won the Tour de France in July and Kenyanborn British rider Chris Froome the Giro d’Italia in May. Froome was the defending Vuelta champion and also won the Tour de France last year, meaning Britain has five straight Grand Tour victories. “It’s astonishing really,” Yates said. “Growing up I was so accustomed to seeing the French, Italian and Spanish riders lead the way, so for myself, Chris and Geraint to all win a Grand Tour in the same year just

shows how far the sport has come in this country.” Thomas and Froome skipped the race in Spain this year. Italian rider Elia Viviani won the final sprint for his third stage win in this year’s Vuelta, with Peter Sagan close behind him. Yates, who rides for team Mitchelton-Scott, successfully defended his lead of almost two minutes in Saturday’s demanding 20th stage, the last competitive one since the peloton took off from Malaga on Aug. 25. On Sunday, riders mostly paraded in a 100.9-kilometer route from the city of Alcorcon to the

center of the Spanish capital. Yates held the leader’s red jersey through stages 9-11, then won stage 14 in the northwestern Picos de Europa mountains to take full control of the race until the end. Spain’s Enric Mas, from team Quick-Step Floors, won Saturday’s difficult stage in Andorra and finished second in the general classification, 1 minute, 46 seconds behind Yates. Miguel Angel Lopez of Colombia, from the Astana Pro Team, was third, more than two minutes off the lead. “It’s been a great moment to appear on the final podium,” Mas said. “It was my goal

although I kept it for myself coming into the race ... I hope for more moments like this in the future, including on the top spot.” Veteran Spaniard Alejandro Valverde was in contention from the first day but failed to keep pace with Yates on Saturday, dropping to fifth for Movistar in the final overall standings. Steven Kruijswijk of Team Lotto NLJumbo finished ahead of Valverde in fourth place. Yates had already come close to a Grand Tour victory in the Giro d’Italia in May, a race he led for 13 stages before losing the lead to eventual winner Froome with two days left. “It’s still hard to believe that I’ve won,” Yates said. “I was disappointed to not win the Giro but I’ve made it up. I’m in shock. I got really nervous when I went on stage. My natural habitat is on the bike. I enjoyed the moment. It was a very special one.” Yates made his Grand Tour debut in the 2014 Tour de France. In last year’s Tour, he won the young rider’s classification, finishing seventh overall. Movistar ended first in the overall team classification.

Technical issues hamper TR-Motorsport team at Bira From page 36 With all the bad luck that had already befallen the team, maybe they would get some good luck in Tony’s race, unfortunately the racing gods were not smiling down on the team, as once again Tony suffered a clutch failure early into the race and was forced to retire, although he did manage 7th on the grid before the failure. The team were up bright and early on Sunday, both cars had their respective work completed and were

sent out for a 10-minute test session. Tony in the Honda DC5 was flying and with no issues reported commented that the car felt perfect. It was a similar story for Victor, although on the in-lap after stopping on the weighbridge the car failed to start again due to an electrical issue, as the team were last on the grid anyway, the decision was made to start him from the Pit-lane as a precautionary measure. Both Tony and Victor were in a buoyant mood ahead of their races. Victor started his

Race 2 from the pit lane and with the new engine made a monumental charge through the field as the young Dane finished an impressive 3rd and also set the fastest lap of the race. Tony started Race 2 in a similar fashion taking several places at the start only to be squeezed at the first corner, he then eased off to ensure the car received no damage as there were 20 laps to go and a lot of racing ahead. However like we have often said this season, disaster struck, just 6 laps into his race

Bjorn excited to see Tiger Woods in Ryder Cup Graham Dunbar Evian-les-Bains, France (AP) — Tiger Woods returning to the United States team after a six-year absence will make golf’s showdown even better, according to Europe’s Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjorn. “He brings so much greatness to the game of golf,” Bjorn told The Associated Press in an interview last Saturday, two weeks before the action in France. A runner-up finish at the PGA Championship last month behind Ryder Cup teammate Brooks Koepka ensured a resurgent 42-yearold Woods won selection from Bjorn’s counterpart Jim Furyk. It’s an eighth Ryder Cup appearance, and the first since 2012, for Woods whose only win was in 1999. He has a losing record overall though won four of seven duels in singles. “For such a big event you want big personalities, big profiles. I’m excited about seeing that American team. I’m excited about seeing Tiger back in the fold,” Bjorn said. The Sept. 28-30 event at Le Golf National in the south-west suburbs of Paris is a rare chance for French fans to watch Woods close up. How Furyk chooses to use Woods is not open to speculation by Europe’s captain. Bjorn, who won all three Ryder Cups he played in, was a vice captain in 2004 and saw an opening day Woods-Phil Mickelson pairing backfire at Oakland Hills with two losses.

“Whatever (Tiger) brings to the American team, and all that, that’s for the Americans to answer and Jim to deal with,” Bjorn said. “I focus on our 12 and what they do.” Instead, the 47-year-old Dane is “quite excited” about his five rookies — compatriot Thorbjorn Olesen, Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, Tommy Fleetwood and Alex Noren. “I think they’re a great bunch of guys and they’ve proven themselves on the world stage,” Bjorn said. Lacking Ryder Cup play, they combine for more experience than the Americans on the par-71 Albatros course. It has hosted the French Open on the European Tour for more than 25 years. Noren won there in July, as did Fleetwood for the 2017 edition. In 2014, Koepka missed the cut when the now three-time major winner was an unheralded member of the European Tour. “It’s a nice thing that we know it well but if it’s a big advantage? I don’t think so,” said Bjorn. “When you take the best players in the world and put them on any golf course they are going to find a way round it.” Once a top-10 player, Bjorn’s own game has declined during an intense 20 months of preparation for his team. He is ranked No. 847 but that does not matter now. “I lead from behind and I push them forward,” Bjorn said of his players. “It’s their moment to shine. It’s their Ryder Cup.”

Angela Stanford wins Evian for first major title Evian-les-Bains, France (AP) — Angela Stanford ended her long wait for a first major title when her 3-under 68 was enough to win the Evian Championship by one shot last Sunday after long-time leader Amy Olson made double bogey on the 18th. At age 40, and 15 years after she was runner-up at the U.S. Women’s Open, Stanford’s wild final few holes gave her a 12-under total of 272. Olson missed a six-foot putt for bogey on the 18th to force a playoff, while Stanford waited near the green signing autographs for dozens of young spectators. Stanford, who got the last of her five LPGA Tour titles in 2012, put her hands to her mouth on hearing she had won, and was in tears during television interviews. Stanford earned a $577,500 check for making her 14th career top-10 finish in majors a winning one. Olson carded a 74 to fall into a four-way tie for second place with fellow Americans

Tony Percy leaves his car after being forced to retire from Race 2.

Tony lost all drive in the car and had to pull off the track. When the car was eventually towed back the pits the loss

of drive was a result of a failure of the K20 engine, another disheartening DNF for Tony and the team.

The season so far has been a rollercoaster for both Tony and Victor and when they have been at their best they have taken several wins, podiums and fastest laps between them. The team and drivers are now resigned to the fact that their respective championships are out of their reach, therefore, attention and focus will now be aligned to the 2019 season. The Unixx – TR-Motorsport Team will be back on the track for the final rounds of Thailand Super Series at the Chang international Circuit in Buriram to be held from the 25th to 28th October.

Sandy Stuvik eyes another Pole Position in Shanghai

Thinking ahead I was sent a link dealing with some amazing statistics around the Ford Motor Company’s production in the early 1900’s. Too much information to download on to these pages, but well worth five minutes of your time to open up the item. I hope this works! Copy and paste the following link: https://modelaowners.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Ford_Plant_Postcards _Circa_19172-rfh1.pdf

What did we learn from Singapore? Well, we learned (if we didn’t know already) that Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes provided an unbeatable situation. Pole position by three tenths of a second, putting him at the front of the pack as the grid raced down to the first corner. And front of the pack had him clear of a squabbling Vettel (Ferrari) and Verstappen (Red Bull) and well clear of Perez (Force India or Force Canada) who shoved his team mate Ocon into the wall, resulting in a Safety Car session. At the re-start, Hamilton just ran away from Vettel and Verstappen who kept in position until lap 14 when Vettel was the first to change tyres taking another soft option. That was not the best decision from the pit wall as both Hamilton and Verstappen took on more durable rubber, with the Red Bull driver passing Vettel to settle into second place. From there on, the Singapore GP showed it should stick with promoting gigs as the Formula 1 race was boring. Fourth placed Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) for the race saying, “There was not a whole lot happening in the race.” Right on, Valtteri. Unfortunately this could be predicted before the lights

went out for the start. Street circuits, so beloved by new owners Liberty Media, do not make for good racing. Too many walls and not even enough straights to allow the use of the artificial DRS. The result of all that was endless high speed processions. Now factor in the ridiculous design of the current F1 vehicles which rely so much upon the aerodynamics of the vehicle (I jyb at calling them “cars”) that they cannot get too close to the vehicle in front because this makes for instability in the slip stream. This is referred to as “dirty air” when in actual fact it is more correctly called “dirty vehicle aerodynamics”. Three other reasons for the processional nature of the Grand Prix came courtesy of drivers Sergey Sirotkin (Williams), Romaine Grosjean (Haas) and Sergio Perez (Force Somewhere). Yes the same Perez who fenced his team mate Ocon. With Sirotkin at the head of the mid-field pack proved impossible to pass until the Mexican Perez used his vehicle as a ram, puncturing his own left rear tyre and collecting a drive through penalty, but the Russian continued to

enter a jousting tournament with Grosjean. Cut and thrust, never mind the blue flags (11 of them) this pair of buffoons continued fighting with Hamilton the race leader trying to lap them and losing all his advantage. Grosjean picked up a time penalty for ignoring the blue flags. He was lucky it wasn’t a knuckle sandwich. F1 has to sparkle up its offering to the fans. More ontrack action and better venues are needed. Urgently. Polaris® RZR unveils the gnarliest four-seater ever - Meet the RZR® XP 4 Turbo S Minneapolis - (Business Wire)- Sep 13, 2018 - Polaris® unveiled a significant upgrade to its nastiest and most aggressive RZR® XP Turbo S with the introduction of the fourseat model. While the initial RZR XP Turbo S set new standards in nearly every measurable category, the all-new machine takes it one step further, becoming the first-ever four-seat off-road monster to boast a 72-inch stance, 32-inch standard tires, exclusive DYNAMIX™ Active Suspension and 16-inch ground clearance to devour virtually everything in its path. “The launch of the Turbo S platform was met with overwhelming excitement from our consumers, we knew the next step was to make it available in a four-seat model,” Chris Musso, president of Off-Road Vehicles, Polaris.

“As a result, we effectively raised the bar again, setting the standard in 72-inch sideby-side performance.” Polaris pushed the limits of engineering when designing the RZR XP 4 Turbo S. From a reinforced chassis to bigger, stronger axles, Polaris incorporated significant performance upgrades and strengthened nearly every component of the machine. The all-new isolated front drive features three times higher impact strength, while the ROPS, control and trailing arms, and radius rods help handle the extreme force produced by this beast of a machine. These efforts helped make it possible to engineer the industry’s first-ever side-byside vehicle to come stock with 32-inch tires. Delivering an industry-best 16 inches of ground clearance, the massive

32-inch tires are also 249 percent more resistant to punctures than the competition. The combination of a flickable wheelbase and massive tires produces a machine that is extremely agile, yet capable of smashing though the toughest terrain with the ease of a trophy-truck. The RZR XP 4 Turbo S was designed with extreme performance capabilities in mind. With 25 percent more assist in power steering and better steering feel at high speeds, the RZR XP 4 Turbo S keeps the driver focused on effortlessly maneuvering through the terrain, not on forcing the wheel. Recalibrated aggressive throttle mapping gives the driver better and more immediate throttle control and the redesigned clutch box allows for better air flow and decreased belt temperatures.

Sandy leads the field.

After a fourth round filled with ups and downs at the mountainous Fuji Speedway, the Thai driver Sandy Stuvik is looking forward to the next round of the Blancpain GT Series Asia Championship which will be held on the 22nd to 23rd of September at the Shanghai F1 Circuit. Last year Sandy set the Pole Position time in the Lamborghini Huracan GT3, and the Thai driver is looking to repeat that feat this year in the Porsche 911 GT3 R. Furthermore, as the season is starting to move into the colder months, both

Craft Bamboo Racing and Sandy Stuvik are quietly confident about their chances around the state-of-the-art circuit. Sandy will once again be reuniting his partnership with Australian driver Shae Davies. “The goal for the Shanghai round will be to get as many points as we can in both the races, and try to improve our overall standing in the championship”, Sandy says. “The Shanghai circuit is one that I have many good memories from, since I first drove there in 2010 in Asian Formula

Renault. I’ve had some good races there so it is a circuit I always look forward to on the calendar. I believe we can be competitive here and I’ve also got a hopeful eye on the weather, as I think it may just boost our chances.” Sandy explains. Sandy is supported by The Pizza Company, Singha Corporation, Dacon Inspection Services, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Thai Airways, ThaiWings Travel Agency, the Sports Authority of Thailand, and the Royal Automobile Association of Thailand.

The all-electric car gets even closer to your car port 10 years ago I foretold the advent of the allelectric future. I suggested this would be a ‘plug-in’ where you just plug it into the mains grid to recharge overnight. The only problem stopping the universal adapting of this concept has been the short life of the batteries. Now remember when mobile phones first became available. The damn thing fitted into a suitcase, and you had to be Don Athaldo to be strong enough to carry it. Now the whole smart shooting match fits into your shirt pocket. The electric concept has been well used by specialty manufacturers, especially Chinese such as BYD. In fact, the taxi service at Suvarnabhumi are all electric and built by BYD. However, mainstream manufacturers are now offering electric as well as internal combustion, such as BMW. The i8 is for sale today, not some dream in the future.

BYD.

10 years ago I said that I firmly believed this would be the way we would be going. Those people who think that hydrogen is the answer will have to work out how to get hydrogen to the mass market, and who is going to pay for the reticulation system. With plug-ins, the refueling system is as far away as the power plug on the wall!

Autotrivia Quiz Last week I mentioned that Dr. Porsche’s peoples car was one of the success stories of the automotive world, though it was not the Germans who made it so successful. I wanted to know, what was the car’s original name and who developed the car? It was Kraft durch Freude (German for Strength through Joy), abbreviated to KdF and this became Volkswagen. It was the British Army that got the factory up and running after the war, this being done to employ German workers. So to this week. Duesenberg, Mercedes and Ducati all had something in common. What was it? Be the first correct answer to email automania@ pattayamail.com or viacars @gmail.com. And in addition, if you are a Pattaya resident,

the closest correct answer will win a free voucher for Casa Pascal’s Breakfast BBQ. One local resident wrote back to say he had

enjoyed the Casa Pascal BBQ brunch and went so far as to say it is the best breakfast in Thailand. Good luck!

Irish musicians add flavor at School for the Blind

The mandolin, a new instrument for the students.

It was a great morning of music at the school.

Derek Franklin There may be another six months before Pattaya next celebrates St. Patrick’s Day, but there was an Irish flavour at the School for the Blind recently when three musicians arrived to perform for the students. Failte, the Irish word for Welcome, is a three piece music group based here in Pattaya. Three musicians with five instruments performed for sixty very excited and grateful blind and visually impaired students.

Music is an important part of the school curriculum, and the students at the School for the Blind have a musical marching band, a rock band, a traditional Thai music orchestra and a group that plays the angalung. Once the musicians started to play the students could not see what instruments were being playing, but they recognised the guitar straight away. There was also a mandolin, as well as an accordion and a penny whistle.

He just wanted to dance.

As soon as he heard it he knew what it was, and was eager to try it for himself.

The students appreciated the beautiful Irish songs.

But there was one instrument they have never heard before, the spoons. It had to be explained that it really was two regular spoons, and they were very impressed by the sounds it made. The musicians played music and sang songs and the children clapped, cheered and one young boy spent the morning dancing,

nothing could stop him. The band gets together each Sunday afternoon at Murphy’s Law bar on Soi LK Metro, just off Soi Buakhao. Four o’clock they start to play and they will transport you back to the Emerald Isle; all the money they collects goes to the Father Ray Foundation, organizers of the Pattaya St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

VOL. XXVI No. 38

Do you want to be a food and wine critic? A food and wine critic. How great a life would that be? Eating out at the best restaurants, drinking expensive wines, and being waited on hand and foot, just to make sure the review was positive. That is the popular conception, but is it really like that? Unfortunately no. Being a weekly publication, you would imagine that means you get to eat out one night each week. Again, unfortunately no. Certainly you have to have one column in the editor’s hands each week, but getting the details for the column may take more than one week, so you have to be in front of yourself to ensure you are not printing a blank page some weeks. There are many reasons there can be a problem. On the appointed day the restaurant calls to postpone because the chef was knocked off his motorcycle last night. No restaurateur wants their restaurant to be

judged with the junior chef in charge. This has happened more than once. Then there is also the situation where the restaurant cancels because they are going to produce a new menu the following week, so please come in a fortnight’s time. The reverse is also true, when a restaurant begs you to somehow squeeze them in, because they have a new promotion starting next week. This really throws your schedule out as well. And finally, there is the situation where as the reviewer, you feel that the restaurant’s performance was just not up scratch, and you cannot in all fairness to the readers (and to the restaurant) write a positive review. So you simply do not write the restaurant up. I have previously explained why I do not publish damning negative reviews. These do nothing other than give the reviewer an inflated idea

of his or her own importance. They do not make people go to the restaurant to see if it really was ‘that’ bad. Rather than help the restaurant improve, a negative review kills the restaurant. I do not believe that a journalist has the right to break anyone’s rice bowl.

So how do we go about doing a review? Firstly, the choice of the restaurant. I do not like to review one Chinese restaurant, and one week later do another Chinese restaurant. You have to

try and give a reasonable balance between the various styles of restaurants. Sometimes this can be difficult when two competing restaurants are both asking for a review this week. Some publications claim to do reviews incognito. Sneak in, fed and wined, and back

to the garret to pen the report. I do not do this, though I have tried on occasions, but it is difficult to explain to a maitre d’ just why you are transcribing the menu into a notebook, and photographing

the venue and standing on a chair to snap the food. It is not long before the owner is at your table asking why. Selecting the dishes for review is also an ‘art’. My dining companion (Madame) and I confer to make sure we do not both order the same dish. We will also chose a main from different sections of the menu, say meat or fish, for example. We will also go for food priced around the middle of the restaurant’s price range. We will usually also select the house wine, and do not select expensive bottles of French champagne. It is not, nor should it be, an opportunity for us to experience the life of the idle rich (or even ample rich).

During the meal we are constantly evaluating the food, the ambience and the service. We also try a little of each other’s food, to get an even better feel for the cuisine. Afterwards we compare notes and decide whether the restaurant was giving the diner what could be expected from a restaurant of that caliber. Obviously, a cheap and cheerful is judged on different standards than a fine dining, silver service establishment. For us, the real enjoyment that can be experienced when dining out, is for us to go out for ourselves, order what we want, drink what we would like, pay for our meals and not have to write a review the next day!

American Fried Rice for non-Americans There is a dish you will see in some restaurants called “American Fried Rice (khao pat American).” It is really only a Thai fried rice dish with “American” side ingredients like fried chicken, ham, hot dogs, raisins, ketchup, and croutons. Other ingredients like pineapple are optional! This recipe for Pineapple Rice is also Thai, but relies on adding flavor to the rice itself and not just different sides. The recipe (American) calls for tinned pineapple, but with pineapple being plentiful use fresh pineapple. Ingredients Serves 6 (170 calories per serving) Basmati or long-grain rice 1 cup Cumin seed 1 tspn Water 2 cups Salt 1 tspn Butter 2 tbspns Brown sugar ¾ cup Chopped red bell pepper ¾ cup Chopped green onion (scallion) ¼ cup Pineapple pieces coarsely chopped 250 gm (can)

Cooking method Preheat oven to 350 F degrees. Boil rice. Place 1/3 of rice in bottom of buttered baking dish. Cover with half of the pineapple, half the brown sugar, and half of the butter. Repeat with next 1/3 of rice and second half of pineapple, brown sugar and butter. Cover with last 1/3 of rice and pour over pineapple juice. Bake covered for 30 minutes and then serve hot.

Technical issues hamper TR-Motorsport team at Bira The Unixx TR-Motorsport racing team were back in action August 31 – Sept. 2 on their hometown track at the Bira International Circuit on the outskirts of Pattaya for rounds 5 & 6 of the Thailand Super Series 2018.

Denmark’s Thomas Raldorf and the Porsche 997 would sit this meeting out as the supercars that raced at Sepang in Malaysia at the start of the season will be back on track in October for the final rounds of their series.

The Unixx TR-Motorsport mechanics had a busy race weekend at Bira.

With the Porsche safely tucked away in Bangkok it was the turn of Tony Percy and Victor Conrad Spliid Jensen to take centre stage in their respective classes. As always the race weekend started early, with the team making the short trip from their workshop in Pattaya to the Bira Circuit on Wednesday evening. Thursday was practice day as both Tony and Victor took to the track to get a feel for their cars. Tony topped the timesheets in free practice and Victor was not far behind in the Honda Jazz as he took a credible 3rd place on the timesheets while running on older tires. An innovative new event, the Amata Friendship Cup presented by Toyota, will see a team of Thailand’s top men and women professional and amateur golfers take on an equal team of Japan’s top players. The tournament will be hosted at Amata Spring Country Club in Chonburi, from December 21-23. Team captains Boonchu Ruangkit and Virada Nirapathpongporn from Thailand, and Naomichi “Joe” Ozaki and Miho Koga from Japan will be responsible for team selection, managing pairings and representing the best interests of their respective nations. “We have some of the most exciting players on all tours around the world right now and to bring them together as one team will be

something every golf and sports fan in Thailand and Japan will love seeing,” commented Nirapathpongporn. The Thailand captains’ first picks were unveiled at a press conference last month and included Kiradech Aphibarnrat, world #33, who took the time from his busy schedule to attend in person, Thongchai Jaidee, women’s LPGA world #2, Ariya Jutanugarn and her sister, world #12 Moriya, recent runner-up at the Ricoh Women’s British Open, Pornanong Phatlum and amateur sensation Atthaya Thitikul. Ozaki and Koya unveiled a powerful team including world number 40, Satoshi Kodaira, along with Japan’s top female and world number 15 player Nasa Hataoka. They will be joined by the current number 1 and 3 players on

the Japan Tour, in Ryuko Tokimatsu and Kodai Ichihara and PGA and European Tour regular Hideto Tanihara. “We are ready for this exciting challenge and will be doing all we can to ensure we do our country proud and put up a strong performance,” commented Joe Ozaki, the 32-time winner on the Japan Golf Tour. The event format will follow that of the Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup; a 3-day competition comprising of team-based and individual sessions, with each team amassing points based on the outcome of each match. A dedicated website (www. amatafriendshipcup.com) will provide the general public with further details of the event, as well as insights on the competitors, ticketing and the schedule of events.

Thailand has sent sailors to the Para World Sailing Championships for the first time with Suraphong Chitkhong and Paisal Pa-teh, both from Pattaya, taking part in the World Champ i o n s h i p s this week in Sheboygan, USA. “This is a very special moment for sailing in Thailand. Never before has Thailand sent sailors to the Para World Sailing Championships and Disabled Sailing Thailand are very proud to be doing so this year. Our Thai sailors have been undergoing training with coaches at Royal Varuna Yacht Club in Pattaya and while this is very early days for Para Sailing in Thailand, the clinic before the Worlds is an excellent opportunity for our Thai sailors to learn more and the World Championships will be an experience never to be forgotten I’m sure,” commented Peter Jacops, Founder of Disabled Sailing Thailand. In 2015 the International Paralympic Committee opted to drop sailing from the 2020 Paralympics and it was this decision that led to the founding of Disabled Sailing Thailand who’s aim is to make the sport more accessible for

people with disabilities and ultimately to support the reintroduction of sailing to the Paralympics. “We have been working closely with World Sailing, the sport’s world governing body, and they have been very supportive in helping us to send sailors from Thailand to this year’s World Championships. There are 125 sailors from 36 countries taking part and we hope our Thai team will inspire others who wish to try sailing in the future,” added Jacops.

Disabled Sailing Thailand is a not-for-profit organization registered under the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand and has received support many individuals and companies to get this far, including Ocean Marina Yacht Club, Royal Phuket Marina, Austhai Marine, Simpson Marine, Pattaya West Winds Masonic Lodge, Royal Varuna Yacht Club and North Sails.
