However, he said, there are more poor students at those and other schools, so the district will make additional visits this year. He said the aid packages of food, drinking water and household items were funded by Banglamung’s social-welfare budget. Jetsada Homklin Pattaya plans to bring some shade to tourists waiting for boats on Bali Hai Pier. The city council on June 18 resolved to build waiting areas topped with fiberglass

roofs at Bali Hai Pier after complaints passengers were baking in the sun as they waited to catch Koh Larn ferries. Tourists who can’t take the sun currently trek back to the main Bali Hai pavilion, but often arrive to find it

overcrowded, Deputy City Manager Atipat Yingisirthanyarat told the council. No timetable was given for construction, however, as the resolution was not backed by any money. The council now must try to acquire the funds.

Pattaya authorities lowered the boom on parking scofflaws in the Soi Arunothai Community. Pol. Maj. Jirawat Sukontasap, chief of the Pattaya Municipal Police, led officers and soldiers on a June 20 tour of the central Pattaya neighborhood following complaints about parking chaos. Community President Amnuay Muangthong welcomed the officers and escorted them around Wattanaporn Village on Arunothai Soi 18

where not only cars cluttered the street, but all manner of obstacles blocked off parking spots. Soldiers called out residents and ordered them to remove chairs, barriers and other items, informing them they cannot reserve public

streets for their personal use. Some car owners were told to move their vehicles elsewhere as they were left in noparking zones. Owners for some vehicles could not be found and the army made plans to return to have them moved.

Nongprue addresses Khao Talo traffic chaos Warapun Jaikusol Nongprue will install more warning signs and lights to prevent accidents around ongoing construction on Soi Khao Talo. Engineering Department chief Thongchai Kamlangthai said June 18 that the sub-district also would co-ordinate with local police to direct traffic during the evening rush hour after contractors have knocked off for the day. The moves come after Nongprue Councilman Wanchai Sangngam complained that the resurfacing of Soi Khao Talo, which began earlier this

month, was causing chaos in East Pattaya. One lane of the road currently is closed, causing massive congestion. And because the road surface currently is uneven, motorcycles are crashing and cars getting damaged. Contractors currently help direct traffic during working hours, but after they go home, no one is on site to keep things moving, he said. The entire work site also has too few signs and not enough lights after dark, Wanchai said. Construction is expected to run through July.

Man who killed teen is Thailand’s 1st execution since 2009 Bangkok (AP) - Thailand carried out its first execution in nine years, putting to death a man who killed a teenager for his mobile phone, in a move that has drawn condemnation from rights groups. Theerasak Longji, 26, was executed by injection Monday, June 18, after being convicted of aggravated murder for stabbing his 17-year-old victim 24 times to take his mobile phone. The brutal killing in 2012 drew widespread anger in Thai society and his conviction was upheld in the appeal and supreme courts. It was Thailand’s first execution since two drug-traffickers were put to death in August 2009, which came after a period of no executions since 2003, Amnesty International said in a statement that called the execution deplorable. Theerasak was the seventh convict to be executed by injection since Thailand switched methods in 2003 from a firing squad. Thailand has executed 326 people since 1930, according to the Department of Corrections.

The corrections department said that Theerasak was executed to be an example to those who think of committing serious crimes. “Even though many countries have abolished the death sentence, there are still many other countries that still use it such as the United States and China who focus on the protection of society and citizens to not become victims of crimes over the priority of the human rights of those who had violated the law,” the statement said. “The Department of Corrections hopes that this execution will serve as a reminder to

those who think of committing serious crimes or violating the law to stop and consider this sentence.” Amnesty International said the execution was a major setback for the country. “This is a deplorable violation of the right to life,” said Katherine Gerson, Amnesty International’s Thailand campaigner. “Thailand is shockingly reneging on its own commitment to move towards abolition of the death penalty and the protection of the right to life, and is also putting itself out of step with the current global shift away from capital punishment.”

that road with Nongprue Road, which has been similarly upgraded. The traffic on both roads is heavy most of the time, and continues to increase as more people realize that Soi Siam is now open and in prime condition. The traffic signal had been fully operational for a few months prior to the beginning of the project, and was deactivated only because there was virtually no traffic on Soi Siam during the construction. The volume of the traffic at that intersection now creates

long backups during rush hours; and the speed of the traffic on these upgraded surfaces during lighter traffic creates the threat of serious traffic accidents at any moment. The signals are now currently set on blinking red. This is not adequate to eliminate either the backups or the dangerous conditions. The signals should be reactivated to full cycle operation as soon as possible. George Richman Nongprue resident

Thailand preparing total ban on import of electronic waste Tasssanee Vejpongsa & Kaweewit Kaewjinda Bangkok (AP) - Thai authorities, who began a series of raids last month on factories accused of illegally importing and processing electronic waste, say they may use special powers given to the military government to impose a total ban on the import of such potentially toxic materials. Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Gen. Surasak Karnjanarat said that he will lead an effort to amend the law to include such a prohibition. He said if that proves impossible, the prime minister could invoke special powers he was given after the army seized power in 2014 to institute a ban. Electronic waste creates huge health hazards. Many components are laden with lead and mercury, cadmium and other toxins. Lax controls mean that facilities often burn plastics to release encased copper and use unsafe methods to extract precious metals. The raids have produced public awareness of the hazards. The environmental group Ecological Alert and

(AP Photo/Gemunu Amarasinghe) Recovery Thailand led local activists from across the country in submitting a letter to the government demanding that it revoke an order allowing the factories to operate in agricultural areas, and demanding that the government urgently ban imports of toxic waste. Last week, the second highest member of the ruling military junta, Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan, who is also defense minister, told reporters the government intends to work toward a total ban.

Defense Ministry spokesman Kongcheep Tantravanich said a committee had decided to introduce measures to immediately suspend licenses to import electronic waste for companies that do not comply with international standards on handling hazardous waste or otherwise flout Thai law and regulations. The standards are specified by the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal, an international treaty that was designed to reduce the

GSMA: Digital identity pivotal to growth of Asia Pacific economies Hong Kong (AP Business Wire) - The GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications) last week released a report, ‘Digital identities: advancing digital societies in Asia Pacific’, which highlights the roles that mobile operators and regulators must play in establishing digital identity as a cornerstone for economic, financial and social development across the region. The report specifically outlines the growing importance of strong and secure digital identity programs in eight developing and developed countries in the Asia Pacific region. “Digital identity is more than just a matter of policy and convenience; it provides the opportunity to interact with governments and businesses securely. E-commerce providers can ensure seamless on-line transactions; governments can better respond to their constituents and improve the lives of citizens,” said Emanuela Lecchi, Acting Head of Asia Pacific for the GSMA. “A strong digital identity program connects people to e-commerce, electoral participation, educational opportunities, welfare payments, banking and economic development, among others.”

Moving up the digital society value chain The GSMA report examines the digital society plans of eight Asia Pacific countries: Australia, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Singapore and Thailand. While these markets vary

considerably in terms of focus, outlook and level of technology integration, there are general guidelines to consider when building a national digital agenda. Connectivity is a recognized precondition for a digital society, while the adoption of digital identities is another. To reap the benefits from a digital society, developing and transition economies such as Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan and Thailand need to ensure interoperability across different government platforms and better leverage existing digital identity systems to provide government services, while mapping a path to develop the role of the private sector. Digital identity is a priority in these countries as it represents a primary source of identification and an opportunity to foster digital, financial and social inclusion. Advanced economies like Australia, Japan and Singapore are further ahead in their pursuit of a trusted environment for their digital citizenry, so the focus shifts to promoting frictionless ways of identifying users online and across different networks. The need to build and ensure trust in such environments will increase as the number of devices connected in the Internet of Things (IoT) continues to grow. Digital identity can transform traditional commerce and services into more efficient and convenient ecommerce and e-services in these countries.

Across all economies, there is a need for governments, private sector players and mobile operators to support a digital identity framework that is designed with privacy and security safeguards to gain citizens’ trust and ensure that data flows are not unduly impaired.

GSMA initiatives to drive digital identity The GSMA is undertaking a range of initiatives to drive the adoption of digital identity in both developed and developing markets. The GSMA’s Mobile Connect is a global, open and common framework developed by the GSMA in cooperation with leading mobile operators and is currently available to 470 million users in Asia Pacific. Focused on developing markets, the GSMA Digital Identity program leverages mobile technology as an enabler of digital identity and associated services that provide social and commercial value. “While the digital age continues to evolve, more questions and issues about digital identities continue to surface. It is important to raise and clarify these questions so that we can consider possible answers and work towards solutions that are beneficial to all,” added Lecchi. movements of hazardous waste between nations. A U.S.-based group, Basel Action Network, suggested last month that the problem for Thailand and perhaps other Southeast and South Asian countries was growing “as China has closed down its polluting and dangerous ‘backyard’ recycling facilities and cracked down on waste imports of all kinds,” noting that China had been the world’s main dumping ground for e-waste for the past two decades. Thai police raided two factories on the outskirts of Bangkok accused of illegally processing electronic waste, and said they would be closed. In the past month, police have raided over 30

factories illegally processing hazardous waste. The first target was a factory that processed discarded computer hardware into plastic pellets. The raid was conducted after local residents filed complaints of a foul smell radiating from the processing plant. Residents who accompanied police on the raid erupted into cheers when authorities announced that they were shutting the down the factory. One resident, Sureeporn Janseera, said more than 500 homes in the neighborhood had become virtually uninhabitable in the past year due to the strong odor. “No one can sit outside,” Sureeporn said. “We could constantly smell plastic burning

which gave us headaches. It was miserable for us.” In the second raid, police shut down a factory that was processing mountains of electronic waste. National Deputy Police Chief Wirachai Songmetta said the factory, operated by O.G.I. Co. Ltd., had falsified documents to obtain a license to process 45,000 tons of waste - which was considerably above its actual capacity and that it was acting as a supplier to other illegal plants that had earlier been raided by police. Wirachai said the illegal practice was a profitable business for the factory operators, who would receive around $25,000 per ton of electronic waste they dealt with.

PIM opens robotics center to produce workforce for high-tech industry The Panyapiwat Institute of Management (PIM) has unveiled an Innovation Center for Robotics and Automation Systems, with the intention of supplying capable workers to target industries of the 4.0 era. PIM established the center in line with the government’s policy to promote technology and innovation in the country by fostering capable human resources for the sector. The facility will serve as a place to train students

for the robotics, digital, aviation and medical industries. Students will have an opportunity to learn about robotics technologies and automation systems used in industrial manufacturing as well as every stage of their development, from programming to maintenance. The center features laboratories for industrial robots, automation systems, cyber-physical systems and robotic prototypes. Pisit Charnkietkong, Dean

of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at PIM, projected that the robotics industry worldwide will expand at a rate of 15 percent per year and that Thailand will emerge as the leader of ASEAN in the field. He said after being provided with hands-on education on robotics and automation, students will be able to help drive Thailand towards becoming a center for advanced robotics research in the future. Getting involved in photography

There is so much more to photography than “You Press the Button, We Do the Rest” which was George Eastman’s Kodak advertising in 1888. These days, you can do it all by yourself, no waiting. However, you can produce better photographs if you follow some of these tips from a selection of pro shooters: Photography is combination of art, science and technology. And don’t forget serendipity, not all great shots work out, and not all great shots were worked out first. Photography is a wide field with various ranges of expertise – from complete beginners

to established experts. If you’re just starting out, you can enjoy the knowledge accumulated by professionals over the years as you learn and improve your skills. One of my teachers-on-the job, always said that photography was the only skill he knew where people paid you to learn. Here is the first and very easy tip. Hold the camera tightly, not holding it outstretched or with one hand, while counting down “onetwo-three” in any language you like. Brace yourself, stop breathing as you squeeze the shutter button, and brace yourself against a telephone pole or wall if you can. Don’t be distant, keep the camera close to you and maintain maximum stability. If you find you are getting “soft” photos because of camera movement, you can stop this by mounting the camera on a tripod and using a remote shutter release. This

Dear Hillary, I am a new transplant to Pattaya. Today was my first day reading your newspaper. I simply could not stop laughing hard after reading your brutally honest responses to people’s queries on June/8th publication. Total respect and salutations to you Hillary. Transplant Dear Transplant, An interesting name you have chosen for yourself, my Petal. You should be very careful round here as there are some stunning creatures roaming the streets at night, looking for a transplant. Especially new transplants! Stay indoors for a month or so before venturing out into the wonderful world of Pattaya. Dear Hillary, I have had a jokey type relationship with my hairdresser for about six months. Last week she made it clear (I thought) that she would be interested in a little after hours fun, and we ended up with some slap and tickle in the back of the salon, nothing too deep, just what you’d call petting. I dropped by today with the idea of floating the idea of her closing the shop for an hour or two one afternoon, but she was not even in for a bit of a cuddle, so I did not pursue the idea. What gives with these Thai

will stop camera movement. Another tip involves using flash during the day, and not relying on available light. Shooting with flash during sunlight helps the camera to deal with unexpected natural light that may be coming from the worst possible direction. This works especially well if you shoot against a very bright light (backlighting). Move yourself and the camera to give you different perspectives. There is nothing to be gained by taking the same shot 10 times. Try different angles and positions: Don’t set your mind on just one position. Be agile as you shoot and experiment with different angles. You don’t know for sure which one will bring you the winning shot. Moving around will also teach you a lot about the strengths and weaknesses of the different positions. The zoom lens is for lazy photographers. Zoom with

your legs. Need a close up? Move in closer. Zoom can be a great feature (especially if you have professional gear, which most beginners don’t), but zooming can reduce quality. Walking a couple of meters closer will produce better shots. Now to the thorny subject of “post production” and Photoshop and similar applications. There is still a feeling in the photographic community that post production is somehow “cheating”. It isn’t, but you should look critically at the final

women, Hillary? I’ve had this before with lots of sexy suggestions, but then backing out at the last minute. Is this the way their culture demands or what? And should I keep trying with this dame? Jo-Jo Dear JoJo, My Petal, you have mistaken harmless fun with the real thing. Your hairdresser is just trying to keep you as a customer. A little snog every so often does not mean that she is ready for a roll between the covers at the local Lonely Hearts Hotel, room by the hour. Don’t get so serious with these ladies, they are just having some fun with you, but that’s all. If you are only looking for short term rumpy pumpy company then a Bar beer, rather than a Barber, is where you go. Understand now? Dear Hillary, You bleat on every week about not having any expensive French champagne. Why don’t you do what the rest of us do, and that is to drink the cheaper champagnes from Australia, Chile, Spain or Italy? They’re just as good. Methode Champenoise Dear Methode Champenoise, You have answered it already in your ‘nom de plume’ my Petal. You obviously know of the restrictions on using the name “champagne”. The Champagne producers successfully lobbied the European Union to restrict the use of that term within the EU to wines produced from their region. Thus, wines from elsewhere cannot even use the term “méthode champenoise” on products sold in the EU, and instead the term “traditional method” (méthode traditionnelle) or the local language equivalent may be seen;

image. Too much photoshopping gives an ‘unreal’ result, which people do not like. The best to do is to begin by using the application to use it as a cropping tool. And do it through a memory card direct from your camera to the computer. The best photographers in the world also use technology to enhance their works. Using photo editing tools will help you get more out of your images, and also help you understand contrast, colors, light and other important

photography elements. Here is a different idea for your photography. Don’t delete images direct from your camera. Regardless of how terrible a photo may seem to you on the tiny preview screen of your camera, please have the patience to wait and view it in normal resolution on your monitor screen before making any rash decisions. Even if it is a bad photo, watch it to learn from your mistakes. Some judicious cropping might even help resurrect the shot. Finally, just shoot! Don’t overthink it, don’t be hesitant and don’t try to save time. Just shoot as much as you can. You learn by experimenting and you gain confidence by doing. On the way you also take a few awesome photos. You are using a digital device, so it doesn’t even cost you anything! Make your camera work. It’s the best way to improve.

for instance, in Germany the term used is “klassische flaschengärung”. South African wines from the Western Cape are labelled with the term “Methode Cap Classique”. However, consumers outside the EU may see “méthode champenoise” used on labels for products made outside of France. So for little people like me I would much rather drink the “real thing” than some other country’s copy. So, please send me the good stuff, that’s a nice chap. And don’t forget the chocolates. Dear Hillary, Can you tell me just what goes on in a Thai girl’s head? I have had this relationship with one of the girls in the local bar. If she wants a night off, I pay for her bar fine, and she comes home with me. We have a great time and I usually take her for som tam or something that she likes on the way. The other night I felt like seeing her, but when I went to the bar and suggested I pay bar for her she said no. I stayed for a while and then another farang came in and off she went with him all lovey-dovey if you please. Are they all like this? I thought I had a pretty good understanding with the girl, but it must have meant nothing to her. Confused and Disappointed Dear Confused and Disappointed, Let me tell you like it is Petal, and you won’t be confused and disappointed in the future. “This relationship” as you see it, is nothing like the “relationship” as she sees it. You are as free as the proverbial bird, come along, pick up, put down and here’s a bowl of noodles for your trouble. And be thankful. She sees one customer who she can get to buy her out when she’s got no better offers. The other farang was probably offering two bowls of noodles. A much better business deal if everything else is equal. Your girl in the bar is a businesswoman, Mr. Confused and disappointed. That’s where you are going wrong. Your relationship does not “mean nothing to her”. It represents an “off” for the evening and a bowl of som tam and some small change. No more, no less. Stop confusing business with pleasure.

Appendicitis a pain in the belly! Since the appendix is a vestigial organ, I often get asked why do we still have an appendix. Please note, the appendix is singular, you don’t have “them” removed. My answer is that it is actually a very important organ, as it is the first surgical procedure done by new surgeons. Yes, my first was a Russian seaman in Gibraltar, and I think I was much more worried and apprehensive than he was, but that is a yarn for another time. A few years ago now, one of my friends was rushed to hospital with inflammation of the appendix, which we medico’s call appendicitis (remember that “-itis” at the end of the word usually means inflammation). He had noticed some pain previously and a watchful eye was being kept upon him by the surgeon, waiting to see if it would “blow up” (not in the bomber sense) or subside. It didn’t settle and as the pain became acute he ended up on the table and sacrificed his inflamed organ (the appendix, silly!) to the surgeon’s knife. If it makes you feel better, there are no ‘apprentice’ surgeons at my hospital! The appendix is a little “finger” shaped appendage that hangs off the bowel and connects with it. Ruminants such as cows have large ones, if size really matters! For us, it is also one of those cute “vestigial” organs which has no

apparent functional use these days, but can give us lots of problems if things go wrong. And things often do go wrong, with appendicitis being experienced by about 1 person in 500 every year. Males suffer from this more than females and it can strike at any age, though under two is exceptionally rare. The most affected age group is between fifteen and twenty-four. So what causes Appendicitis? It is a form of infection which is generally from the food passing through the gut and can be bacterial or even viral. Sometimes the poo (nice medical term) in the gut gets jammed into the appendix and causes the initial problem. Just for the record, we call it inspissated feces, just to make it sound grander than it really is. While the signs and symptoms of Appendicitis are straightforward, the diagnosis is not as easy as a number of other abdominal conditions will mimic the symptoms of centro-abdominal pain which radiates to the right iliac fossa, nausea, with a low grade fever and occasional diarrhea. From my medical student days I can even remember the last one being the Abdominal Crises of Porphyria! I must admit that in 50 years of medicine I’ve never met her!

There are some laboratory tests which can be done, especially a blood test to see if the White Cell count has gone up, and some centers will perform ultrasound to try to differentiate what is going on inside the belly. The definitive “cure” is to whip out the offending organ, and as mentioned before, this is usually one of the first operations a young first year surgeon does on his own. My old surgical boss always told me to make sure the skin incision was as small and as neat as possible, because that was all the patient had to go by to judge one’s competency. It didn’t matter what went on inside - just make sure the outside looked good! This was particularly important with young females and a 2 cm scar level with the top of the bikini bottom was the ideal. However, these days most surgical removals are done via “keyhole” surgery with three or four small incisions only. The recovery time after this form of surgical procedure is also quicker than “open” surgery. Post-operatively the vast majority of patients do well and are up and about in a few days, happily living without their appendix, so if you’re having some grumbling gut pains, and you still have your Appendix, perhaps you should let our doctors cast their practiced eyes over it.

NIH ends alcohol study, citing funding, credibility problems Lauran Neergaard Washington (AP) - The U.S. government is shutting down a study that was supposed to show if a single drink a day could prevent heart attacks, saying ethical problems with how the research was planned and funded undermine its credibility. The National Institutes of Health used money from the alcohol industry to help pay for a study that ultimately was expected to cost $100 million. It’s legal for NIH to use industry money in addition to taxpayer dollars for research as long as certain rules are followed. The problem: An NIH investigation

concluded Friday that a small number of its employees had close contact with industry officials that crossed those lines. Some of those interactions “appear to intentionally bias” the study so that it would have a better chance of showing a benefit from moderate alcohol consumption, said NIH Deputy Director Lawrence Tabak. Those employees, from the NIH’s National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, then kept their interactions with industry secret, he said, even after the NIH started the normal process for asking companies or other outside groups to help

fund a research project. Those actions cast “doubt that the scientific knowledge gained from the study would be actionable or believable,” Tabak told a meeting of the NIH director’s advisers. Another concern: Some outside experts who had reviewed the study plans raised concerns that it was too small and too short to address the potential problems of a daily drink - such as an increased risk of cancer or heart failure - and not just potential benefits such as a lowered risk of a heart attack. “Purely on scientific grounds, I never really quite understood why this trial was being done,” Dr. M.

Roy Wilson of Wayne State University told NIH Director Francis Collins after hearing the investigation’s conclusions. People who have a glass or two of wine - himself included, he said - “don’t do it for health reasons.” The research was supposed to track 7,800 people who were assigned to take either a drink a day, or totally abstain, for several years. Only 105 people had enrolled by last month, when Collins temporarily suspended the study after a New York Times article first raised questions about the funding policy violations. On Friday, Collins announced he was completely

Fewer US teens smoking, doing drugs ... and drinking milk Mike Stobbe New York (AP) - Fewer U.S. teens are smoking, having sex and doing drugs these days. Oh, and they’re drinking less milk, too. Less than one-third of high school students drink a glass of milk a day, according to a large government survey released Thursday. About two decades ago, it was nearly half. Last year’s survey asked about 100 questions on a wide range of health topics, including smoking, drugs and diet. Researchers compared the results to similar questionnaires going back more than 25 years. One trend that stood out was the drop in drinking milk, which started falling for all Americans after World War II. In recent decades, teens have shifted from milk to soda, then to Gatorade and other sports drinks

and recently to energy drinks like Monster and Red Bull. The survey showed slightly fewer kids are drinking soda and sports drinks now, compared to the last survey in 2015. One caveat: Most students were not asked about energy drinks so how many kids drink them now isn’t known. A study from a decade ago estimated that nearly a third of kids between the age of 12 and 17 were regularly drinking energy drinks. Kids have shifted from a dairy product rich in calcium and vitamin D to beverages laden with sugar and caffeine, which is likely contributing to the nation’s obesity problem, said Barry Popkin, a University of North Carolina researcher who studies how diets change. “This is not a healthy trend for our long-term health,” he said. For teens, the government recommends 3 cups daily of

dairy products - milk, yogurt or cheese. The survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is conducted every two years. About 15,000 students at 144 high schools were surveyed last year. The surveys are anonymous and voluntary, and there’s no check of medical records or other documents to verify answers. Some of the findings: - Not as many teen are having sex, although there wasn’t much change from the 2015 survey results. Last year, about 40 percent said they’d ever had sex, down from 48 percent a decade ago. - There was no substantial recent change for cigarette smoking, either. About 9 percent are current smokers, down from more than 27 percent when the survey started in 1991. Ditto alcohol, with 30 percent saying they currently

use alcohol, down from 51 percent in 1991. - Marijuana use seems to hovering, with about 36 percent of students saying they had ever tried it. But overall, illegal drug use seems to be falling, including for synthetic marijuana, ecstasy, heroin, inhalants, and LSD and other hallucinogenic drugs. For the first time, the survey asked if they had ever abused prescription opioid medications. About 14 percent did. - Another first-time question: Have you had a concussion from a sport or physical activity at least once in the previous year? Nationally, 15 percent said they had. The finding may sound high but it’s not far off from what’s been reported by some other researchers, said Michael Collins, who runs a University of Pittsburgh-affiliated sports concussion program.

shutting down the research. “This is a matter of the greatest seriousness,” he said. The study was being led by Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, which said in a statement that it was “deeply committed to ensuring the scientific and ethical integrity of any research study involving our investigators” and would review NIH’s findings. In a statement late Friday, the lead researcher, Beth Israel’s Dr. Kenneth Mukamal, said he and rest of the research team were “deeply disappointed” in NIH’s decision. “We stand fully and forcefully behind the scientific integrity” of the study, Mukamal said. He added that “every design consideration was carefully and

deliberately vetted with no input or direction whatsoever from private sponsors, who have had no contact” with study staff since the trial began. Aside from how alcohol can impair behavior and judgment, scientists have long debated if drinking various amounts can truly translate into a specific health benefit. What the NIH’s alcohol research agency calls “low-risk” drinking is no more than seven drinks a week for women and no more than 14 drinks a week for men. Asked if it would be possible for NIH to try to answer some of those health questions after the financial controversy, Tabak responded, “It would not be an easy study to conduct.”

Czech president torches underpants, stunt stuns journalists Prague (AP) - A fiery stunt by the Czech president has really stunned journalists this time. Milos Zeman announced a press conference for Thursday, but instead of briefing reporters, he had two firefighters in protective gear burn a huge pair of red underpants in front of them. Czech media said the boxer shorts in question had been hoisted by activists in 2015, replacing the official presidential flag on Prague Castle. The red underwear was meant to symbolize Zeman’s close relationships with Russia and China and has since become a symbol for criticism of his presidency. After the incineration, Zeman told reporters: “I’m sorry to make you look like little idiots, you really don’t deserve it.” Zeman, 72, has often clashed with the press, even waving a fake machine gun at reporters last year.

‘Dead’ husband returns after Japan police send wrong body Tokyo (AP) - A Japanese wife has told police the body she thought was of her missing husband belonged to a stranger after her spouse turned up alive a year later. Tokyo police acknowledged Wednesday that the body found in a river in eastern Tokyo in June 2017 was of another man reported missing at around the same time. Police apologized for the mix-up and said the remains would be returned to the right family. Police initially believed the body was of a man in his early 40s reported missing by his family three days earlier, and handed it over to them after positive identification by the wife and two relatives. The body was then cremated by the family. The family earlier this month notified police that the man came home alive in May. Police refused to say where he was or what he was doing. The body, of another missing man in his late 30s, might have been misidentified because both men were about the same height and age, Tokyo’s metropolitan police said. The metropolitan police said they regretted the mistake and promised to take preventive measures.

Vows in the air: German couple married in tightrope wedding Berlin (AP) - A couple in eastern Germany have gotten married in a swing dangling from a motorcycle atop a tightrope, 14 meters (46 feet) above the ground. The German news agency dpa reported that a pastor standing in a cage atop a fire service ladder presided over the wedding of Nicole Backhaus and Jens Knorr in the town of Stassfurt on Saturday. The couple exchanged rings in the air but, for safety’s sake, waited until they were back on the ground to kiss. More than 3,000 people watched the wedding in the sky, which took place during a local festival. The tightrope was stretched between the town wall and a tower, and the motorbike was ridden by Falko Traber, a member of a family of artists.

2 inn workers eat pot-laced candy left by guests, get sick Shelburne, Vt. (AP) - Police say two employees of an inn at a popular Vermont tourist destination ate marijuana-laced chocolate left behind by guests and got sick. Shelburne Police were called to the Inn at Shelburne Farms on Wednesday after receiving a report an employee felt ill and was lying in the parking lot. The two employees were taken to the hospital and have since been released. The inn’s spokeswoman says that any food left behind is not to be consumed by staff and that the inn’s training programs will be reviewed with employees. Police are asking that people who possess edibles keep them secure. The edibles in this case resembled malted milk balls. No charges will be filed against the guests. Recreational use of marijuana will become legal in Vermont on July 1.

Exhaust-ing ordeal: Woman gets head stuck in tailpipe Winsted, Minn. IBM pits computer against human debaters Matt O’Brien San Francisco (AP) - IBM pitted a computer against two human debaters in the first public demonstration of artificial intelligence technology it’s been working on for more than five years. The company unveiled its Project Debater in San Francisco on Monday, asking it to make a case for government-subsidized space research - a topic it hadn’t studied in advance but championed fiercely with just a few awkward gaps in reasoning. “Subsidizing space exploration is like investing in really good tires,” argued the computer system, its female voice embodied in a 5-foottall machine shaped like a monolith with TV screens on its sides. Such research would enrich the human mind, inspire young people and be a “very sound investment,” it said, making it more important even than good roads, schools or health care. The computer delivered its opening argument by pulling in evidence from its huge internal repository of newspapers,

Dr. Noam Slonim, principal investigator, stands with the IBM Project Debater before a debate between the computer and two human debaters Monday, June 18, 2018, in San Francisco. The system, called Project Debater, is designed to be able to listen to an argument, then respond in a natural-sounding way, after pulling in evidence it collects from Wikipedia, journals, newspapers and other sources to make its point. (AP Photo/Eric Risberg) journals and other sources. It then listened to a professional human debater ’s counter-argument and spent four minutes rebutting it. An IBM research team ba s e d i n I s r a e l b e g a n working on the project not long after IBM’s Watson computer beat two human

quizmasters on a “Jeopardy” challenge in 2011. But rather than just scanning a giant trove of data in search of factoids, IBM’s latest project taps into several more complex branches of AI. Search engine algorithms used by Google and Microsoft’s Bing use similar

technology to digest and summarize written content and compose new paragraphs. Voice assistants such as Amazon’s Alexa rely on listening comprehension to answer questions posed by people. Google recently demonstrated an eerily human-like voice assistant that can call hair salons or restaurants to make appointments. But IBM says it’s breaking new ground by creating a system that tackles deeper human practices of rhetoric and analysis, and how they’re used to discuss big questions whose answers aren’t always clear. “If you think of the rules of debate, they’re far more open-ended than the rules of a board game,” said Ranit Aharonov, who manages the debater project. As expected, the machine tends to be better than humans at bringing in numbers and other detailed supporting evidence. It’s also able to latch onto the most salient and attention-getting elements of an argument, and can even deliver some selfreferential jokes about being

NASA rover knocked out as gigantic dust storm envelops Mars Marcia Dunn Cape Canaveral, Fla. (AP) - NASA’s seemingly unstoppable Mars rover Opportunity has been knocked out by a gigantic dust storm that is enveloping the red planet and blotting out the sun. Officials said Wednesday they’re hopeful the rover will survive the storm, which already covers one-quarter of Mars and is expected to encircle the planet. It could be weeks or even months, though, until the sky clears enough for sunlight to reach the Martian surface and recharge Opportunity’s batteries through its solar panels. For now, Mars’ oldest working rover is stuck in the middle of the raging storm, in round-the-clock darkness. “By no means are we out of the woods here,” said John Callas, the Opportunity project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. “This storm is threatening, and we don’t know how long it will last, and we don’t know what the environment will be like once it clears.” Flight controllers tried late Tuesday night to contact Opportunity, but the rover did not respond. The storm has been growing since the end of May with unprecedented speed. NASA launched the twin rovers Opportunity and Spirit in 2003 to study Martian rocks and soil. They landed in 2004. Spirit hasn’t

This combination of images made by NASA’s Curiosity rover shows the rim of the Gale Crater on June 7 and 10, 2018 during a major dust storm. The Opportunity rover, which is inside the crater, has fallen silent as the storm blots out the sun. (NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS via AP) worked for several years. Opportunity, however, has kept exploring well past its expected mission lifetime. Scientists aren’t nearly as concerned about the newer, nuclear-powered Curiosity rover on the other side of Mars, which is already seeing darkening skies. Dust storms crop up every so often at Mars, sending dust tens of miles into the atmosphere and turning day into night. Spacecraft orbiting Mars are too high to be affected. There’s no chance of Opportunity being buried or getting a wheel stuck in dust. Even in the worst of storms, only a layer of fine dust is left behind. Managers said the main concern is that dust could temporarily cover its optical instruments. The rover’s batteries are likely so low that only a clock is still working, to wake

the spacecraft for periodic power-level checks, according to officials. If the clock also goes offline, then the rover won’t know what time it is when it comes back on and could send back signals at any time. This isn’t Opportunity’s first major brush with dust. In 2007, a massive dust storm kept Opportunity silent for a few days. It jumped back into action after awakening from its deep self-protecting slumber. This time, the rover’s energy level is believed to be much lower. On the plus side, Martian summertime is approaching and that should keep temperatures up at night and prevent the batteries and other parts from freezing. Besides electrical heaters, Opportunity is equipped with eight tiny plutonium-powered heaters. Scientists are eager to learn

as much as they can about the dust storm to hone their weather forecasting skills. Astronauts living on Mars, for instance, wouldn’t want to get caught outside in a fierce dust storm, where winds can reach 70 mph (113 kilometers per hour) - almost hurricane force. The Martian atmosphere is so thin that while the wind can lift dust off the surface, it doesn’t topple a spacecraft. Opportunity was in remarkably good health going into the storm, Callas said, with only an arthritic joint in its robotic arm. “Keep in mind, we’re talking about a rover that’s been working at Mars, hanging in there, for 15 years and designed just for 90 days,” said Jim Watzin, director of NASA’s Mars exploration program. “It just doesn’t get any better than that.”

a computer. But it lacks tact, researchers said. Sometimes the jokes don’t come out right. And on Monday, some of the sources it cited - such as a German official and an Arab sheikh - didn’t seem particularly germane. “Humans tend to be better at using more expressive language, more original language,” said Dario Gil, IBM’s vice president of AI

research. “They bring in their own personal experience as a way to illustrate the point. The machine doesn’t live in the real world or have a life that it’s able to tap into.” There are no immediate plans to turn Project Debater into a commercial product, but Gil said it could be useful in the future in helping lawyers or other human workers make informed decisions.

Rare sightings of big bug draw fans from around the world

(Glenn Coin/The Post-Standard via AP) Onondaga, N.Y. (AP) Students from Japan and a researcher from New Zealand are among the scientists and hobbyists flocking to central New York for rare sightings of a big bug. The area’s cicada (sih-KAY’duh) brood emerges once every 17 years. The Post-Standard says the eastern U.S. is one of three places in the world with periodical cicadas. The others are the Pacific Ocean island of Fiji, where cicadas emerge

every eight years; and northern India, where they emerge every four years. In New York, some of the cicada fans have congregated at a farm and brewery in Onondaga (ah-nahnDAH’-gah), just south of Syracuse. Several researchers recorded audio and video as the cicadas’ call vibrated in the background. A student from Shizuoka University in Japan, Hiroki Hayashi, calls the scene “wonderful and exciting.”

audience’s verdict was unanimous: the play was fantastic! The show took place in the school’s state-of-the-art auditorium, in front of an enthusiastic and supportive crowd of parents, friends and community members. The performers did not disappoint, bringing to life the well-loved tale with impressive skill. Highlights included the two main songs, “Bare Necessities” and “I Wanna Be Like You.” Main characters Mowgli the man-cub, Bagheera the Jaguar and Balloo the Bear all gave strong performances. Other notable performances came from singing elephants, slithering snakes, cheeky monkeys and sleepy vultures. The moment the villain, Shere Kahn the Tiger, was vanquished with fire was both hilarious and satisfying. Rehearsals for the musical began way back in April. Students, teachers, teaching assistants and parents were all involved in producing the play and all that hard work certainly paid off on the night. Teachers and parents alike were justifiably very proud of the young actors.

Garuda execs tout Indonesian tourism

Thailand welcomes 16.4 million foreigners so far this year

Jetsada Homklin Executives from Indonesia’s national airline brainstormed with Pattaya travel agents about how to boost tourism with Thailand. Ryanto A. Winarso, Garuda Indonesia’s general manager for Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia, headed the June 19 meeting at the Holiday Inn Pattaya, also organized by Bhara Tours and Travel Bandung. Winarso said Indonesia presents a great opportunity for travel agents. The country has a population of 261 million and, each year, about 200,000 of them travel to Thailand, principally Pattaya and Bangkok. He said Indonesians like Pattaya because of its wellplanned facilities, natural attractions and privately managed tourist spots. They love going to different shows and cabarets, zoos, museums, and joining sports activities, the airline’s Thai sales manager, Somchai Attasivanon, said.

Portable, but only just

Cellist Fermín Villanueva. (Photo/Dirk Brzoska) One day, when I was about thirteen and walking with my classmates in orderly fashion along the school corridor, we passed the Headmaster, who always stood at the same junction during lesson changes when almost the entire school was on the move. As I passed him, I was

tapped on the shoulder and a magisterial voice announced, “Kaye, I think you should learn the cello.” When you are thirteen you don’t argue with the school dog let alone the Headmaster, so learn the cello I did. At first I was taught by a large and kindly lady who

kept her cello in a tattered canvas bag and had a penchant for voluminous dresses which rendered her feet invisible. She would float imperiously along the school corridors like a Spanish galleon in full sail, followed by a vapour trail of stale beer fumes, for she was also the proprietress of a local pub. You need to have a certain determination to learn the cello. It’s portable, but only just and it can be awkward to carry on to buses and trains. As a teenager I developed the useful skill of riding my pedal bicycle and carrying the cello under one arm, though these days I don’t think I could do either. The cello - or the violoncello to use its full name has always played an important role in the orchestra. In many 18th century compositions the cellos merely chug along with the double basses, but by the early 19th century, composers had become more adventurous and gave the cello more interesting parts to play. Few solo concertos were written for the cello before the 19th century. Perhaps the playing technique had not developed sufficiently for the technical demands of a concerto. Whatever the reason, the cello didn’t come into prominence as a solo instrument until the notable concertos by Schumann (1850), Saint-Saëns (1872), Lalo (1876) and Dvoøák (1894). Even so, compared to

the vast number of violin concertos, those for the cello are pretty thin on the ground.

Édouard Lalo (18231892): Cello Concerto in D minor. Fermín Villanueva (vlc), Romanian Radio National Orchestra, cond. Gabriel Bebe elea (Duration: 34:10, Video: 1080p HD) When you think of French composers, Lalo (LAH-loh) is probably not the first name that springs to mind. He’s probably best known for his Symphonie Espagnole, a popular work for violin and orchestra. His cello concerto dates from 1876 and sounds as though parts of it were written by Schumann, for Lalo had a rather Germanic style. This splendid performance is given by the charismatic Spanish cellist Fermín Villanueva who was born in 1993 in Pamplona, also the birthplace of the legendary violinist Pablo de Sarasate. Fermin studied at the Higher School of Music of the Basque Country and later at prestigious universities in Leipzig and Vienna. He has been awarded numerous prizes in national and international competitions and has performed with many European orchestras. The

German cellist, Peter Bruns, recently wrote “Fermín is a very gifted and advanced cellist with highly-developed instrumental technique as well as with a wide range of mental, stylistic and musical skills to express his musical ideas on the cello.”

Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975): Cello Concerto No 1 Op 107. Sheku Kanneh-Mason (vlc), BBC Symphony Orchestra cond. Mark Wigglesworth (Duration: 31.27, Video: 720p HD) This concerto is considered one of the most difficult works written for the cello and was composed for the Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, who evidently committed it to memory in four days. This is a remarkable feat because most musicians would require four months at the very least. Composed in 1959, it famously opens with four notes played on the solo cello answered by the woodwind. There are echoes of this motif throughout the concerto which is cast in four movements though the last

three are played without a break. The second movement is in complete contrast to the energetic first one. The music is forlorn and yearning, full of harmonic tension and the melody played entirely on the cello harmonics adds an unworldly, ethereal quality. The third movement is an unaccompanied cadenza which transforms from a reflective mood into a frenzy of activity leading into the bizarre angular opening theme of the last movement. Sheku Kanneh-Mason was born 1999 and started learning the cello at the age of six. When he was seventeen, he won the coveted 2016 BBC Young Musician of the Year award. Since then his international career has rocketed and he’s already booked for appearances with some of the top orchestras in Europe and America. Sheku incredibly talented and gives a superbly musical performance of this difficult work. Try to ignore the inane chatter from the TV commentator who really ought to know by now when to keep her mouth shut.

Mystery after mystery builds in ‘The Pharaoh Key’ Jeff Ayers Gideon Crew has nothing left to lose, so he decides to go out with a bang in “The Pharaoh Key,” Preston & Child’s latest — and supposedly final — story to feature their intrepid hero. Effective Engineering Solutions has closed shop and fired everyone, including Crew. To make things worse, a checkup on his medical condition proves that it’s still a death sentence; he will be lucky to survive six months. So when former co-worker Manuel Garza asks for help to get answers from the elusive CEO of the now defunct company, Crew agrees. They are both denied an opportunity to talk to Eli Glinn, but while cleaning out the remainder of their stuff from their desks, they discover a computer that has completed a job it was assigned years ago to decipher strange writings

on a stone tablet. The data indicates a possible treasure in the middle of a dangerous section of southwest Egypt, so they decide to abscond with the information and claim the potential rewards for themselves. What they will uncover is both treacherous and surprising, and one person’s treasure is another person’s nightmare. The quest might kill them, but since Crew is on borrowed time anyway, he tries to remain unflappable. Preston & Child write compelling stories, and this one invokes classic adventure novels from the early 20th century. Mystery after mystery builds into a finale that even savvy readers won’t see coming. If this truly is the last Gideon Crew novel, the authors have ended his escapades in grand style; fans will rejoice and newcomers will appreciate the sheer scope of everything. (AP)

Family fun and insight in sprightly ‘Incredibles 2’ Lindsey Bahr Los Angeles (AP) - “The Incredibles” writer/director Brad Bird has said that his characters’ powers are all born of stereotypes. Dad is strong, mom is stretched in a million directions, teenage girls put up shields, little boys are full of boundless energy and babies are unpredictable. It’s why he decided that for the sequel, “Incredibles 2 ,” a buoyant and quick-witted romp, he’d pick up right where we left off, in that parking lot after Dash’s track meet where a new threat emerges from underground. No matter that in reality, 14 years had actually passed. Animation is not bound by time or aging actors. For the rest of us, however, 14 years is still 14 years. And in the past 14 years, the business of Hollywood has become the business of superhero movies. It’s hard to remember a time when there weren’t a dozen a year. But when “The Incredibles” came out in 2004, they were still a bit of an anomaly at the multiplex — its cheeky, mockumentary realism, its jokes about capes, secret identities, “monologue-ing” and the dangers of toxic, obsessive fandom was the perfect introduction

(and indoctrination) to superheroes for those who couldn’t care less. Pixar magic made superhero believers out of the skeptics. And by 2008, we all thought, sure, let’s see about this Tony Stark fellow and someone called Iron Man. In “Incredibles 2,” it seems like Bird himself is wrestling with a culture he helped facilitate — not totally dissimilar to what Steven Spielberg did earlier this year in “Ready Player One.” But instead of nostalgia on trial, it’s superheroes and screens. The villain here is called Screenslaver, who uses screens to hypnotize anyone watching. It’s both the most retro plan of all (keeping with Bird’s love of the 60s aesthetic) and still somehow utterly modern. Annoyed by how blindly and wholly consumerist everyone has become at the mercy of screens and simulated experiences in lieu of real ones, from movies to video games, Screenslaver has set out to end that, and squash Municiberg’s dependence on and obsession with superheroes. As with the first, there are a million ideas at play here (not a flaw, by the way), including evolving family dynamics. Most of the original voice cast has returned, including Craig T. Nelson as Bob Parr/

It’s still fun to watch smart storytellers like Bird working within the system and using his platform to selfevaluate or comment on what’s going on, even if the conclusion is a little flimsy. Bird could have easily just brought back his lovable characters, leaned on Jack Jack’s antics and cashed in

This image released by Disney Pixar shows a scene from “Incredibles 2”. (Disney/Pixar via AP) Mr. Incredible, Holly Hunter as Helen Parr/Elastigirl, Bird as Edna Mode, Sarah Vowell as Violet Parr and Samuel L. Jackson as Lucius Best/ Frozone (the only slight change in the main players is that Dash Parr is now voiced by Huck Milner). And once again, superheroes are still on shaky ground in Municiberg and are put on ice after the Parr family accidentally damages some public property while trying to take down a criminal. But a wealthy heir and superhero appreciator Winston Deavor (Bob Odenkirk) and his tech savvy sister Evelyn (Catherine Keener) have a plan to rehabilitate their image. Right now, the public only sees the destruction. The Deavors propose outfitting superheroes with body cams to get exciting footage of their feats. “Incredibles 2” provides a bit of a corrective on a micro level to the first film’s

gender politics by sending mom off to work and making dad stay home (although wasn’t that a little antiquated 35 years ago?). The animation is also a heck of a lot better. “The Incredibles” looks downright primitive and even a tad ugly in retrospect. Although it gets off to a slow start, ultimately it’s also quite a bit of fun, from the absurd (Jack Jack’s burgeoning powers) to the grounded (Dad helping Dash with his math homework or trying to make up for getting in the way of Violet’s date and embarrassing her even further in the process). Like “Ready Player One,” however, “Incredibles 2,” kind of loses the thread by the end. A villain is a villain no matter how salient their point, and Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl and their offspring are our heroes and thus we must root for them even while thinking that Screenslaver might be on to something.

A New Day Festival promises three days of fantastic fun & music mott@pattayamail.com Mt. Ephraim Gardens with its large house and 800 acre estate is situated in Herne Hill in the centre of Kent’s rolling valleys, approx. 48 miles from London. The estate was first built in 1695 and for the last 300 years has been cared for and attended by the Dawes family. The gardens had to be completely re-furbished after years of neglect due to the Second World War but they have been lovingly restored with many different flowers and rock and water gardens. In the centre is a lovely old sweet chestnut tree. Herne Hill itself is just outside Faversham, which is an old English settlement that can be dated back to preRoman times. Kent is famous for its beautiful countryside, cherry trees, apple orchards, hop fields and pretty girls. As Charles Dickens once

Ephraim Estate is the Mont Field Cricket Ground which was once a County Ground. Faversham is also the home of England’s oldest family run brewery - Shepherd Neame. Kent is rightly proud of its many local beers. Once a year (this year from August 3-5), Mt. Ephraim opens its gates to A New

Day Festival, and what a wonderful occasion it is too! Three days of great music, sitting about making new friends, re-acquainting with old ones and seeing people from previous years. There are two stages which are set out at the bottom of two fields, nicely close, but far enough apart to be just right as it is about a two minute walk between stages. your heart could desire: fish ’n’ chips, sandwiches, pastries, curries and pizzas. There is a marvellous cheese shop selling all sorts of local delicacies as well as people selling clothes and records (vinyl) and CDs - mostly of the artists appearing at the festival. There is a fabulous tent in between the stages where, after each band finishes, they congregate and sign any CDs bought by the patrons. At the top of each field are the beer tents. All beers are kept at the same price (last year is was £3.50 a pint). The festival also employs proper,

experienced bar staff and this makes all the difference. The cricket pitch is turned into a camping/glamping site with plenty of parking space and the amenities are in abundance and impeccably clean. There are also plenty of nearby hotels and inns. Greed is not on the agenda at the New Day Festival so the numbers are kept down to allow plenty of freedom to wander about without having to queue. With all this, there are Rock & Roll bands too. Last year the lineup was amazing and this year they have bettered it. Each day has a band in the

mid-afternoon who could easily headline the event itself. On Friday its John Otway, Saturday Bernie Torme, and Sunday Son of Man. Saturday is headliners all day long. ‘Fun, Fun, Fun:’ Beach Boys team up with Royal Philharmonic Gregory Katz London (AP) - Summer is coming and the season in Britain is being marked by a return to the airwaves of the Beach Boys’ “Fun, Fun, Fun” with a new version featuring the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The raucous teenage classic has been reborn with a classical twist, one of 16 Beach Boys tunes given a new lease on life on a CD recorded at Abbey Road, a London landmark forever associated with another great ’60s band, the Beatles. Beach Boys singer Mike Love seems somewhat mystified by the continuing appeal of tunes he helped pen with cousin and fellow Beach Boy Brian Wilson more than five decades ago. “They’re playing ‘Fun, Fun, Fun’ on the radio these

Beach Boys musicians Mike Love (left) and Bruce Johnston (right) talk during an interview at Spiritland in London, Wednesday, June 13, 2018. (AP Photo/Kirsty Wigglesworth) days, which is great,” says Love, who was in Britain for days of live performances.

“Brian and I wrote that years and years ago. I said, Brian, ‘we ought to do a song about

a girl who borrows her dad’s car and goes cruising in it rather than to the library.’” The slightly preposterous song (romance develops after the girl’s father takes her Thunderbird away) had a first life as a hit, a second spell as a nostalgic encore at hundreds of Beach Boys concerts, and now a third incarnation that combines the band’s early sound with a premier orchestra. “They’ve done a great job of honoring the original vocal performances and complementing them with the orchestrations,” said Love. The project has been approved by all the surviving Beach Boys, including Brian Wilson, who had recently been embroiled in bitter lawsuits with Love. Brian’s two brothers — Carl and Dennis

Wilson — have both died. Brian Wilson is not touring with the current incarnation of the Beach Boys — he’s been concentrating on solo projects for some 20 years — but he sees the Philharmonic project as validation of his belief that classic compositions like “Good Vibrations” are “pocket symphonies.” “I always knew the vocal arrangements I did back in the 1960s would lend themselves perfectly for a symphony,” he said in a statement. “I am both proud and humbled by what they have created using our songs.” The album, released this month, is already the Beach Boys highest charting album in Britain in 28 years. The Royal Philharmonic has had success with this approach before, releasing earlier

albums “with” Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison and Aretha Franklin. Producers Don Reedman and Nick Patrick use the orchestra to set the stage with dramatic introductions to well-known songs, then add bits and pieces to highlight key passages, but they don’t play with the vocal tracks or alter the mood of the songs. For Beach Boy Bruce Johnston, the reworking of his “Disney Girls” — a nostalgic paean to growing up in the 1950s — is a revelation that breathes new life into a song he wrote for the band’s 1971 album, “Surf’s Up.” “They brought a dream to life,” he said. “I never thought ‘Disney Girls’ would ever get this treatment. I couldn’t even imagine it this way. It’s a surprise.”

Margaret Grainger updates the PCEC on the Hand to Hand Foundation’s activities and their current effort to be accepted by the Global Giving network for fundraising. She gave a quick follow-up to her previous presentation to the Club on building affordable housing for the slum families of Pattaya. Ray Woods began with talking about his recent visit to the Philippines where he became friends with Francisca Susano and her family. Francisca is 120 years old! He was amazed by her stamina having been born in the 19th century. Although she had no birth certificate which is common among people born in the remote hill regions of the Philippines, her village last year threw her a 119th birthday party. Imagine 120 years on the earth. If she had been collecting social security, she could have been doing so for half her life. Ray gave her and a few other special people as examples of the benefits of a life of travel. He then talked about “The Fifteen Most Challenging Countries to Travel To;” based on his experience, including Somalia, South Sudan, Afghanistan, Bouvet, Cambodia (in 1963), and Thailand

District Governor Onanong Siripornmanut (right) presents the prestigious Women in Rotary Award to Past President Ratana Yothawong of the Rotary Club of Jomtien-Pattaya.

Past President Alvi Sinthuvanik presents a plaque of appreciation to President Nachlada Nammontree of the Rotary Club of Jomtien-Pattaya in recognition of her undaunted service to her club during the 2017-18 Rotary year.

President Nachlada Nammontree presents a certificate of gratitude to Ken Whitty, MD of Flow Inter Co., Ltd., who generously sponsored many barrels of Paulaner Bier. At right is PE Vutikorn Kamolchote.

President Gaye thanks Zoltan Zakor, Director of Business Development at Vanichwathana (Bangkok) Co., Ltd., for his kind sponsorship of exclusive French wines.

Rtn Jariya Wuensche and PDG Peter Malhotra keep the proceedings moving at a lively pace.

President Peter Schlegel welcomes Bruno Spornberger as a member of the Rotary Club of Phoenix Pattaya.

Rotary’s annual tradition of bidding adieu to outgoing officers and welcoming new leaders for the next year was held at a joint gathering June 8, as clubs with a variety of nationalities and languages held installation ceremonies in the Head of State Chamber at the Royal Cliff Grand Hotel, Pattaya. The grand affair, chaired by District Governor Onanong Siripornmanut, was the very first time that all 5 non-Thai speaking clubs participated in the Joint Installation ceremonies. They were the Rotary Clubs of Jomtien-Pattaya, Eastern Seaboard, Pattaya Marina (French), Phoenix Pattaya (German) and Dolphin Pattaya International (English/German). The proceedings, guided by Rtn Jariya Wuensche and PDG Peter Malhotra, saw many senior Rotarians from around Thailand including local community leaders attending to

give their support to Rotarians in District 3340 R.I. During the course of the evening children from the Child Protection and Development Center put on a show that gladdened the hearts of everyone. Other entertainment was the Royal Cliff’s JMC Trio and the ever so popular Chad and Friends rock ‘n roll band. Major sponsors of the evening included Ken Whitty and Kanpitcha, who supplied an abundance of Paulaner Bier, and Zoltan Zakor, Director of Business Development at Vanichwathana (Bangkok) Co., Ltd. with exclusive French wines. District Governor Onanong presented a Women in Rotary Award to Past President Ratana Yothawong honouring her as the First Woman Rotarian and First Woman Club President in Thailand. Ratana joined the Rotary Club of Jomtien-Pattaya on 1 February 1990 and served as president in 1993-94.

President Gaye and PE Vutikorn Kamolchote present a meritorious Service Award to David Chappell for his staunch support for Rotary throughout the years.

June saw another Joint Chambers of Commerce networking night, this time at the Holiday Inn’s Executive Tower in their Workshop area, a very unique inside atmosphere, complete with engine blocks supporting finger food. Always fun. The hosts were Belu-Thai and the Netherlands-Thai Chamber of Commerce, with Executive Director Hans van den Born circulating and looking after a very well attended networking. And the rabbits? Deborah Rabbit from the Rabbit Resort, with the help of the charming Sarinna and Cholticha from Absolute Health, was handing out tiny porcelain rabbit candles, just in case we ever dared to forget Deborah Rabbit! Other health professionals were present, with Nui, Tanya and Metas from Bangkok Hospital Pattaya on hand to fight off the opposition from Absolute Health’s Dr Sitt Tienthitti and their portable TENS machine. Thierry Roux from World Transfer attempted to interest me in his company’s money transfer system, which he assured me was the best for pensioners bringing their money into Thailand. Rogers cans an ‘ace’ at Pattana PSC Pattaya Links Golf Society Monday, June 18, Khao Kheow C & A Stableford 1st Tommy Marshall (6) 40pts 2nd Greg Perfrement (20) 40pts 3rd Derek Phillips (19) 38pts 4th Kevin Rogers (10) 37pts Playing at Khao Kheow and scoring 40 points is quite an achievement, and today two players, with quite different handicaps, did themselves proud. It all came down to the countback where Tommy Marshall had the better back nine (A course). From his new handicap of #6 it was 74 gross. Greg Perfrement has only been here for about two weeks this trip and has been right among the placings, including 2 green jackets. He almost had a third one today. The two mates, Derek Phillips and Kevin Rogers were once again in the mix. This time it was Derek’s turn to edge out Kevin by just one point. Consistency comes to mind with these two. Near pins have been hard to come by lately for the Links golfers, but today all was back to normal and the winners were Dave Stockman (C3), Pete Seil (C8), Pete Seil (A3), and Paul Chesney (A5).

Tommy Marshall (right) with wig-wearer Phil Davies. The “best nines” for those not yet earning a prize went to John Anderson (front, 19pts) and Paul Chesney (back, 19pts).

Wednesday, June 20, Pattana – Stableford 1st Phil Davies (12) 40pts 2nd Greg Perfrement (20) 37pts 3rd Nigel Harrison (21) 36pts 4th Dave Hewson (8) 36pts It’s a good thing we don’t allow gambling in Thailand as many would lose plenty if we bet on golfers, with the many drastic form reversals. Two days ago Phil Davies wore the dreaded “wig” for having the worst score of

the day. Today he took the green jacket by having the best score of the day. A small field of thirteen came out to play at the beautiful Pattana Golf Club, in fine weather and with a steady breeze, at times a bit stronger than that, for most of the round so to keep conditions pleasant. The Golf Course was once again in excellent condition with the only “complaint” being that the greens on “A” course were a little grainy and slower. However, the “B” course greens were in their usual excellent shape. Phil Davies showed you can’t keep a good golfer

Kevin Rogers.

Paul Chesney.

down, for long, and went right to the top with a great 40 points to win by three. The now consistent Greg Perfrement was there again, and with his 37 points took second spot. Nigel Harrison runs hot and cold, but today he held off the challenge of Dave Hewson to grab third place, both players with 36 points. Having such a small field, we left the “near pins” at home, but still had “best nines” which went to Kevin Rogers (front, 21pts) and Tip Briney (back, 18pts). Finally, congratulations to Kevin Rogers who snared his first hole in one. He did not see it go in, but his playing partners all did.

Friday, June 22, Pattavia - Stableford 1st Paul Chesney (21) 39pts 2nd Phil Davies (12) 38pts 3rd Mike Tottenham (22) 37pts 4th Bryan Barrell (33) 37 pts The management at Pattavia Century is doing a fine job and today the course was in splendid condition. The greens have been allowed to grow a tad longer, as has been the case for some time now and they are much more putter friendly.

Paul Chesney has been away for a short visit to the UK and, in just his second game back, took on Pattavia and won. His 39 points was a great result and gave him the chance to again don the green jacket. Phil Davies has run into some very good form recently and, following on from his 40 points 2 days ago, scored another fine 38 points today to take second spot. Mike Tottenham is consistently around the mark and Bryan Barrell sometimes surprises himself (and others) when he has a good score. These two fought it out for third, with Mike getting up in a countback, both with excellent scores of 37 points. Four near pin markers out today and all were won, the marksmen being Tip Briney (4), Dave Hewson (7) Phil Davies (13), and Tommy Marshall (17). The Best Nines by nonwinners came from Peter Henshaw (front, 19pts) and Ian Corica (back, 19pts).

World champ makes debut at TRGG Traveller’s Rest Golf Group Monday, June 18, Khao Kheow Division 1 1st Darren Stanton (13) 36pts 2nd Ken Doherty (14) 36pts 3rd Neil Bramley (10) 35pts Division 2 1st Jim Cooper (16) 37pts 2nd Robert Cannon (22) 34pts 3rd Toshi Shiraiwa (22) 34pts It’s not every day one gets to meet a bona-fide world champion, let alone have him play in your golf society. Today the TRGG had the pleasure of hosting Ken Doherty who became only the third player outside of the UK to win the World Snooker Championship by beating Stephen Hendry 18-12 in the 1997 final. Although Ken is more at home on a snooker table than the undulating contours of the greens, he proved he has a natural sporting ability and today posted a very respectable 36 points. Ken’s nemesis was the TRGG’s man in form Darren Stanton who, by the

narrowest of margins, denied the Irishman a victory on debut. Darren can now lay claim to having beaten a world champion and has generously made himself available for photos and autographs back at the bar. In division two it was Jim Cooper who stormed home with twenty points on the back nine to claim a victory for the first time since April. Jim’s 37 points was a warning to everyone that Coop’s was back but it was short lived as the following day he could only manage twenty points for the entire eighteen holes.

Tuesday, June 19, Green Valley Stableford 1st Higuchi Yasuo (16) 39pts 2nd Colin Smith (14) 38pts 3rd John Welch (34) 37pts On Tuesday we made our regular trip to Green Valley where twenty players competed. Some great scores were recorded today, with

Jim Cooper.

over two thirds of the field scoring in excess of thirty points. However the day belonged to Higuchi Yasuo with an excellent score of 39 points which was also the best score of the week.

Wednesday we returned to Green Valley but this time it was to play at the St Andrews course. Scoring was obviously very difficult with only one person managing in excess of thirty points. A measly 31 points was enough to take the prestigious first place position as Bill Corby left the rest of the field in his wake for his first number one spot since joining the TRGG in November.

Wednesday, June 20, St. Andrews Stableford 1st Bill Corby (21) 31pts 2nd Paul Sharples (14) 29pts 3rd Toshi Shiraiwa (22) 28pts

1st Colin Smith (14) 39pts 2nd Daryl Ottaway (7) 37pts 3rd John Welch (34) 35pts Plutaluang today and the “Big Gun” Colin Smith was at it again. Having set his sights on winning the Player of the Year Award, Colin added another five points to his already impressive total of 735 and leads his nearest rival at the half way mark by seventeen points. His 38 points was testament to his golfing prowess and his ability to remain calm under pressure.

Friday, June 22, Burapha - Stableford 1st Jacob Cummings (6) 40pts 2nd Neil Wilkinson (14) 36pts 3rd John Baxter (20) 36pts

Burapha is in excellent condition and always attracts good numbers; the greens are fast and they hold the line perfectly. This is obviously a favourite course for Jacob Cummings as he took first place here last week with 39 points, lost a shot, and followed it up this week with a another victory.

Saturday, June 23, Mt. Shadow Stableford 1st John Welch (34) 34pts 2nd Billy Allan (19) 32pts 3rd Neil Wilkinson (14) 32pts We finished the week at Mountain Shadow where John Welch, who was knocking on the door all week, finally came through. His 34 points was enough to break the drought and pick up the number one spot

Allen shoots PB at Burapha PSC Golf from The Bunker Boys Monday, June 18, Soi Dao G.C. – Stableford 1st Jimmy Carr (18) 36pts 2nd Robbie Watts (10) 35pts 3rd Ray Warn (16) 34pts An early Monday morning start for twelve Bunker Boys as they made the three hours thirty-minute trip up highway three to Chantaburi to play the magnificent Soi Dao Mountain Resort course. The scenery on and around the course was spectacular with lush jungle and high mountains. Unfortunately, the downside of the mountains is they bring a lot of rain so the course was wet. Play got underway at the scheduled time but soon it became apparent that the weather was not going to provide much joy. Light rain began to fall and it continued off and on throughout the round. Needless to say “lift, clean, and place” rule applied from the start. For some reason, the front nine was much drier than the back nine but both provided a good challenge. The one to meet the challenge best was Jimmy Carr with a solid thirty-six points followed a point back by Robbie Watts and in third place with thirty-four points was the ever vocal Ray Warn. Near pins went to Robbie Watts, Neil Carter, and Michael Brett.

Tuesday, June 19, Soi Dao G.C. – Stableford 1st Michael Brett (15) 37pts 2nd Robbie Watts (10) 34pts 3rd Alan Sullivan (14) 31pts They say mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun, but who goes out to play golf in the pouring rain? The Bunker Boys of course. Heavy overnight and early morning rain ensured the course was in even worse condition than the first day. Play started thirty minutes late and it soon

Peter Allen. became apparent that we were in for another wet day. We soldiered on manfully for eight holes when the rain became so heavy that we had to take shelter for about forty minutes in the clubhouse. When we resumed the course was completely sodden and it became difficult to find a dry spot from which to play. Casual water littered the course and balls continually plugged. Under the circumstances, a score of thirty-seven points by Michael Brett was enough to take the honors and a good score in the conditions. Second place went to Robbie Watts with thirtyfour points with Alan Sullivan bringing up the rear with thirty-one. Near pins went to Geof Cox, Robbie Watts, and Michael Brett.

Wednesday, June 20, Burapha A & B – Stableford 1st Peter Allen (32) 40pts 2nd Jimmy Carr (18) 37pts 3rd Robbie Watts (10) 34pts In the space of twenty-four hours we went from the rain-drenched sodden Soi Dao course to the sun-drenched

bone dry Burapha for another of our rare low season visits. The course was in excellent condition but presents a serious golfing challenge with a number of par-4 holes over four hundred yards in length. Curiously this presented no problems for one of our shortest players (both in stature and length off the tee). Peter Allen played out of his skin to post a first time ever forty points and take first place. This is also the first time Peter broke one hundred and also joined a rare club by claiming a near pin using the driver. One feels a slash from the handicapper is imminent. Second place went to the ever-consistent Jimmy Carr with thirty-seven points and Robbie Watts, now starting to play the kind of golf everyone knows he is capable, took third with thirty-four. Near pins went to Peter Allen, Robbie Watts, and Neil Carter.

Friday, June 22, Mt. Shadow – Stableford 1st Steve Durey (21) 36pts 2nd Robbie Watts (10) 34pts The golfing week ended under bright sunny skies at the Mountain Shadow course which was incredibly dry given recent rain and it played as tough as ever. Today the first par-3 hole presented an additional challenge. The sprinklers had been left on for a prolonged period and the putting surface was waterlogged, trying to navigate around a rotating sprinkler spray and putt through the water was something new, as a result, only one player managed to par the hole. Enjoying some consistent good form in recent weeks Steve Durey took the honors with a solid thirty-six points, and Robbie Watts who had a bit of an up and down round took second with thirty-four. Near pins went to Geoff Parker and two to Michael Brett.

Pierrel wins the mug PSC Golf from the Tropical Golf Group Tuesday, June 19, Bangpakong Riverside C.C. – Stroke/Medal All looked good today until we turned off the motorway at Bangpakong and suddenly found the road soaking wet and pools of water everywhere. We booked in and were told that carts were only allowed on the cart path, so the ‘lift clean and place’ thru the green ruling was employed. The course was wet and the ball picked up mud, but the dark skies brightened and there was no rain. Yes it turned out a nice day. This is a relatively friendly course to play with a straight forward layout, normally all before you but if you get off line you will be punished. With the rain and heavy going and only having the carts on the path, a lot of walking took place even for those with carts. The reason we played stroke play was that this was the day of the ‘Monthly Mug’

John Pierrel (right) accepts the monthly mug from Dick Warberg. and on this day it was very closely played with 4 players returning the same score and the winner declared on count-back. John Pierrel took the victory over Don Carmody in second, Brian Parish third with Mashi Kaneta fourth, all with net 68. Not often do we have so many in the count-back but well done all. In fifth was Steve Truelove with a net 70 and in sixth was Derek Brook with a net 71.

Friday, June 22, King Naga – Stableford It had been nine months since our last visit to this course, formerly known as Great Lakes and Rayong Country Club but not operating under the title of King Naga. Check-in on arrival was smooth and easy on the wallet with great rates, whether walking, carting alone, or sharing. Soon

changed and after a bit of chipping and putting, we were off the first tee a bit early. This was always a challenging track and it is nice to see progress being made at King Naga to bring it back to a course one wishes to return to. While still a work in progress and currently with cored and sanded greens, the fairways were in good condition with less bare patches than before. With the course practically to our selves, the groups were around at a good pace which allowed a chance to have a bite and drink in the clubhouse. Have to report the surroundings were pleasant and clean, the food was very good at a reasonable price, and the staff courteous. With it close at the top, Gerd Riedler (CH 11) on 38 points took the top step followed by Mick Coghlan (25) on 37. Dick Warberg (22) took third with 36 points and Mashi Kaneta(17) was fourth with 35. Best 9‘s by non-winners came from Brian Parish and Daryl Evans.

The near pins went to Dave Smith and Jonathan Pratt.

Pattaya Country Club and found the course in reasonable condition, but the greens were very bumpy. You had to avoid going in the rough as getting out again was a real challenge, but that is why it is there. David Smith was in top form today and went round in 73 strokes to post a whopping 44 stableford points. In second was Alan Wilson with 41 points and third came Stuart Banks with 39.

Pattavia was our venue on Thursday and the course was in excellent condition with fast greens. It was again a nice warm and sunny day with a strong cool breeze. Willem Lasonder showed a good form and won the day with points. Second was Jonathan Pratt with 38 points, beating Stan Rees on the count-back. The near pins were claimed by Dave Smith and Stan Rees.

Thursday, June 21, On Tuesday we went to Pattavia - Stableford

Porn perfect at Green Valley Bubba Watson shoots 63 to PSC Golf from The Billabong Bar

rally for 3rd Travelers title

Pat Eaton-Robb

Pin, Porn and Lak.

Wednesday, June 20, Green Valley – Stableford The sun decided to hide behind a curtain of cloud for most of the first nine holes, accompanied by a strong breeze, making things a little more difficult, but maintaining a most pleasant temperature. The wind had no effect on the ladies scores, however, for half of those playing carded a better than par round. Miss Lynn had 12 pars in her round of 39 points but was not on the podium, which also applied to Miss Nu on 40 points losing on a countback to Miss Lak who had 23 points on the way home for third place. Miss Pin was hoping for better than 41 points when she already had 38 standing on the 16th tee, but a delighted Miss Porn, despite three 1-pointers on her card, could not be caught with 43 points to take the honours. The men could not match

these scores for the wind obviously had the better of the encounter. Four players were vying for fourth place on 31 points but Arch Archibald, who had 7 holes for 1 point or less, was the best of this group. Selwyn Wegner stuttered on the front nine with only 15 points but recovered to 34 points and took third place. Auk Engelkes let too many shots get away from him on the back nine and had to settle for second spot on 36 points. Jason Barnett, playing off his 5 handicap, won the day on 37 points. Two ‘2’s going came from Arch Archibald and Keith Allen.

Friday, June 22, Burapha - Stableford Burapha A and B loops today and with 5 groups playing we got away on time and were back in the locker room in under 4 hours. The course was in great condition as usual with fast greens and

fairways that were great for your second shot. The scoring was not too bad with 35 points by Rick Culley taking third place. In second spot was Gary Ritchie, playing to his 7 handicap with 36 points, but capturing the line honours was Nicky Shaw, a man who didn’t get much sleep the night before but still managed to conjure up 42 points, to take the win. There were five ‘2’s, coming from Jason Barnett, Bob Scott, Gary Ritchie, Rick Culley and Ramsay Smith.

Cromwell, Conn. (AP) — Bubba Watson says TPC River Highlands feels like home. It certainly was a comfortable place again last weekend. Watson overcame a six-stroke deficit Sunday to win his third Travelers Championship title, shooting a 7-under 63 for a three-stroke victory. The left-hander became the first three-time winner on the PGA Tour this season and pulled within one of Billy Casper’s tournament record of four victories. He finished at 17-under 263. Third-round leader Paul Casey, Stewart Cink, Beau Hossler and J.B. Holmes tied for second. Casey shot 72, Cink 62, Hossler 66 and Holmes 67. Watson also came from six back to win the 2010 event for his first tour title and beat Casey in a playoff in 2015. “I feel like this is my home course,” Watson said. “As soon as they put the schedule up, I sign up for this. I want to come back here. This means so much, not only from the golf side of it, but from the family side. My dad, it was the only time he got to see me win (in 2010). He got to see me qualify for the Ryder Cup at this event. So all these things just mean so much to my family.” During the victory ceremony, Watson’s adopted children — 6-year-old son

Bubba Watson tips his visor after making a birdie putt on the 18th green to win the Travelers Championship golf tournament, Sunday, June 24, in Cromwell, Conn. (AP Photo/Stew Milne) Caleb and 3-year-old daughter Dakota — received small trophies of their own. Watson shot a 33 on the front nine, but really got it going on the back, with five birdies. He tied Casey at 16under par by getting up and down from the bunker for a birdie on the course’s signature 15th hole. Still tied on the par-4 18th, Watson hit his tee shot 366 yards, then pitched inside 3 feet, giving caddie Ted Scott a big high-five before taking the lead with the putt. “Hitting some of those shots, especially the shot on 18, downwind, it was very difficult, but somehow pulling it off” Watson said. “And that’s what we all try

to do on Sundays is pull off the amazing shot.” Casey, who shot 65, 67 and 62 to lead the field by four shots coming into Sunday, birdied his opening hole. But he gave that back on the fifth and had back-to-back bogeys on 16 and 17 to end any chance he had of catching Watson. The Englishman has finished in the top 20 in eight of his last nine tournaments. He was second here during his first visit in 2015, came in 17th a year later and had a fifth-place finish in Cromwell a year ago. “There was a lot of fight in there,” Casey said. “But, I fought my golf swing all day as you can see coming down the last couple of holes.”

Another empty car park and a totally deserted course so we were able to tee-off 25 minutes ahead of schedule. We played the A and C nines today with the front nine in perfect condition but on the C course all the greens had been sanded. Some unbelievably low scores came in with 32 points being the highest from both divisions. Gareth Piccinin, playing off 7, won division 1 with that score ahead on Paul Young in second on 30 points and Bruce Gardner third with 28. William Chang topped division 2 with 28 points, Alan Bissell was one point behind in second and John Doyle was third with 26. There were only two near pin winners, both on A2, as Neil Gamble in division 1 and John Doyle in division 2 took the prizes. No ‘2’s in division 1 but in division 2 John Doyle birdied A2.

There were six groups out today with the equal cut in the two divisions at 7- 18.8 and 19.2 + and with 35 points Colin Aspinall won division 1. The yoga instructor’s boyfriend Paul Young was second on 33 points (Tu was a happy lady at the presentation) and in third place Frank Kelly beat Mikael Andersson on a 16/9 count-back after they both came in with 31 points. In division 2, Leo Adam was the winner with 34 points, William Chang came second on 33, Bruce Gardner took third on 31 and in fourth place was Mick Werner with 30 points. The fairways here are now in great condition and the greens today the slickest we have played in many weeks. Near pins were claimed by (Div 1) Mikael Andersson (2) and Paul Young, and (Div 2) Bruce Gardner, Ian Plummer, Tony Thorne and Mick Werner. Michael Andersson birdied the 6th in division 1 and there was another rollover in division 2.

Marc Brunner, Paul Young and Ray Daws.

Wednesday, June 20, The Emerald Stableford There was a lot more improvement to the course from our visit here three weeks ago, especially the greens and fringes. The cut in the two divisions came at 10-18 and 19+ and John Carlin returned the best score of the day, winning division 2 with 36 points. John Doyle was second on 30 and an amazing 24 points was enough to give third place to Leo Adam, beating Bruce Gardner on a 14/12

back-nine count-back. Ray Daws won division 1 with 33 points, Neil Gamble was second on 33 and there were three 30-pointers fighting for third position where a 17/16/14 count-back saw Paul Young edge out Les Smith and Marc Brunner respectively. Near pins went to (Div 1) Marc Brunner, Les Smith (2) and Paul Young, and (Div 2) John Carlin. Marc Brunner was a happy chappy after a birdie on the 7th and in division 2 there was a rollover to Mountain Shadow next Monday.

Hamilton wins French GP to retake lead in F1 title race Joseph Wilson Le Castellet, France (AP) — Lewis Hamilton capitalized on a mistake by rival Sebastian Vettel to enjoy a wire-to-wire victory at the French Grand Prix last Sunday and retake the lead in the Formula One title race. Starting third behind Hamilton and Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas, Vettel tried to use his faster set of tires to make a good start. But the German’s lunge on the inside of the first corner crunched his Ferrari into the back of Bottas, damaging both cars and sending them into the pits for repairs. Vettel emerged with a new front wing and the entire field to fight through, and even though he made quick work of the slower cars he had to settle for a fifth-place finish. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Kimi Raikkonen in his Ferrari crossed second and third to complete the podium at the Paul Ricard Circuit. Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo was fourth. Defending champion Hamilton has 145 points after eight races. Vettel, who entered the race with a one-point lead, leaves trailing by 14. While Hamilton thanked his team for its “great work” via the radio after crossing

(AP Photo/Claude Paris) the finish line, Vettel regretted that he “had lost the race on the first lap.” “My start was too good. Then I ended up with nowhere to go,” Vettel said. “It was my mistake, I tried to brake early and get out of it, but I had no room and no grip, being so close to the car in front and also next to me.” Hamilton dominated the race, qualifying and Friday’s practice sessions boosted by an engine upgrade that Mercedes had expected to roll out in Canada, when Hamilton finished fifth and lost his lead to race winner Vettel. “A fresh engine is always a good thing,” Hamilton said. “After seven races there is no way it can have

the same power as a brand new engine. The guys did a great job. They work to create the best engine in the world.” It was Hamilton’s 65th career win. Only Michael Schumacher has more victories with 91. Just after the run-in between Vettel and Bottas, there was further trouble when Pierre Gasly ran his Toro Rosso into the back of Esteban Ocon’s Force India, knocking them both out of the race and bringing out the safety car. Bottas, who needed a new rear tire, had to restart at the back with Vettel. Hamilton thought that Vettel got away lightly with a five-second penalty for causing his collision.

“It’s a shame, we had a chance for a one-two (finish),” Hamilton said. “I mean we are all going into Turn 1 as hard as you could, but when someone destroys your race through an error, it is kind of a tap on the hand.” But Hamilton then added: “Those things happen.” “I thought I was going to get rear-ended,” he said. “(But) we are all fighting for world championships. We are not twiddling around.” Kevin Magnussen (Haas), Bottas, Carlos Sainz (Renault), Nico Hulkenberg (Renault) and Charles Leclerc (Sauber) finished out the points.

Force India’s bad day only got worse when it also lost Sergio Perez midway through the race due to an engine issue. Fernando Alonso, who won the 24 Hours Le Mans classic endurance race last week, endured more misery back with McLaren. The former two-time champion failed to finish his third consecutive F1 race when his McLaren had a problem with its back left tire and he was forced to retire late. Lance Stroll also failed to finish when a tire blew on his Williams. Driving conditions were optimal at the 5.8-kilometer (3.6-mile) circuit situated just

inland from the Cote d’ Azur. However, the handful of secondary roads that led to the track produced hourslong traffic jams for the tens of thousands eager to attend their first F1 race in France since 2008. The return of the French GP is the first part of an unprecedented tripleheader of three races on consecutive weekends. With less time for Ferrari’s engineers to play catch up, Hamilton will hope to press his advantage at the Austrian and British races. Coric ends Federer’s winning streak to take Halle title Halle, Germany (AP) — Borna Coric defeated defending champion Roger Federer 7-6 (6), 3-6, 6-2 to win the Gerry Weber Open final last Sunday. The 21-year-old Croat saved three of the four break points he faced and took his second match point to end Federer’s 20-match winning streak on grass for his second career title. Coric, who defeated secondseeded Alexander Zverev in the first round, saved two set points in the first set tiebreaker. “I was impressed with him,” Federer said after only his third loss of the year. “He was always a tick better in the end and he took his chances.” Federer, who skipped the entire clay-court season for the second year in a row, had been going for his 99th title, one week after taking his

Smiling Russians? World Cup hosts defy glum, hostile image Angela Charlton Moscow (AP) — Chilly, gray, threatening. To many outsiders, that’s the image Russia conveys to the world. But that’s not the Russia World Cup fans are discovering. A Moscow subway security guard gives a visitor a thumbsup sign. A waitress in Saransk bubbles over in wonder at meeting her first-ever American. Buoyant Russian fans sing, party and share face paint with foreigners. And forget about the language barrier. It seems like everyone is using translation apps to surmount it — and laughing together when it produces nonsensical results. From the Black Sea to Baltic, from the Ural Mountains to Moscow’s Gorky Park, Russians largely see this World Cup as an opportunity. And they appear surprisingly eager to set aside political tensions, welcome visitors and share their rich culture and history. “We thought Russians would be, well maybe not rude, but cold,” said Jose Oscar Rodriguez, who came with his father from Peru’s capital Lima to follow his national team. “But everyone is nice. The taxi drivers, the host in

our building, the people in the streets. ... Everyone.” That doesn’t come naturally. For many Russians, the default stance toward foreigners is caution and suspicion. It’s partly left over from Soviet-era worries about both Western espionage and the KGB’s watchful eye. At the moment, Russia is under siege from outsiders who just want to have fun. Mexican fans wearing sombreros, Peruvians wearing headdresses, Belgians wearing French-fry hats, all happy to be part of Russia’s first-ever World Cup, all hoping for their team to win. The 11 host cities, many still grungy not long ago, are resplendent. Giant inflatable soccer balls and flags of the world dangle from the gleaming glass ceiling of 19th century GUM shopping mall abutting Red Square. Children kick balls on the pristine plaza beneath the Kul Sharif mosque in Kazan. “Russia is wonderful,” said Ignacio Dufort, 40, from Uruguay. “We arrived to Yekaterinburg at midnight, without a ruble, couldn’t communicate with anybody and couldn’t find our apartment, but we met this woman who was our

savior. She helped us to find the place and the next day she spent four hours with us helping our landlord register us with authorities.” “She was an angel,” said his girlfriend Claudia Mena, 35, from El Salvador. Things don’t always work that way in Russia, where the first answer to questions

to look good to the rest of the world — especially now. Viktoria Latishova, a 19year-old waitress in Saransk on the edge of the steppe, rejoiced at meeting an American for the first time, spilling with curiosity despite her limited English. The city had little tourism industry before hosting the World Cup, and

is showing a certain giddy graciousness about the chance to be a part of it all. Residents ask about foreigners’ fears and apprehensions. Some offer assurances that geopolitical tensions have nothing to do with their personal feelings about foreigners. Even the weather for Russia’s World Cup has

been a pleasant surprise for some. In the host city of Sochi, fans have been joining Russian vacationers in diving into the Black Sea. And in Moscow’s Gorky Park, Peruvian fan Rodriguez sought relief from a piercing sun. Reclining on a shaded bench, he said, “I didn’t realize Russia could be so warm.”

Who’d be a referee?

Dear Editor Having completed one week’s World Cup viewing I feel I need to make a few comments on that which has been televised to date: a) The stadiums are absolutely brilliant and I should wish to congratulate the Russian Federation for hosting such a, so far, superb World Cup festival. b) VAR is the only problem I have with the format of the games. The referees are appearing to rely too much on this facility whereas in the past and in my forty years of officiating, I never had anything close to such assistance. Today it would appear that the unwritten Law 18 ‘Common Sense’ has gone out of the window. The referees can rely now upon a review whereas in days gone by, they would rely solely on their judgement and ‘getting it right’ more times than not. c) GLT (Goal Line Technology) is, however,

something that I truly agree with and it is about time FIFA adopted such a facility for important tournaments such as this. My mind still goes back to 1966 and Geoff Hurst’s goal which was awarded based on the linesman’s call (now called assistant referees, quite correctly) in the World Cup final between England and West Germany. I will never accept that the whole of the ball crossed the line, then or now, no matter how many times I have viewed it. Yes I watched the final from the comfort of my armchair in Ashington, Northumberland, close to where Bobby and Jack Charlton were brought up. Great memories! d) In conclusion I applaud the coverage to date and am waiting patiently for our English refereeing team to appear, they are noticeably absent from any games to date. Ha Ha. Ford: going to go by train

Austrian Grand Prix this weekend The Austrian Grand Prix returns to Austria and the Red Bull Ring. The circuit has had a revamp from Red Bull and Red Bull Racing will naturally be hoping they can get a win on home soil after gaining top step in Monaco. The “Ring” has seen many configurations of the track, mainly to slow the cars down, as speeds of up to 256 km/h for a lap average have been recorded previously. That’s “average” not outright top speed which is well over 300 km/h. The current history is interesting. Grandstands and pit buildings were demolished in 2004, rendering the track unusable for any motorsport category. Then in late 2004 and early 2005, there were intense discussions concerning whether the owner of the circuit, Red Bull, would find another use for the site, or return motor sports to the venue. There was a circuit extension proposal using part of the old Österreichring; however, Red Bull boss Dietrich Mateschitz publicly announced that he

Koala bear. had no intention of wasting money on a race circuit. Despite what he had avowed before, late in 2008, Red Bull began their €70m reconstruction of the track. With the reconstruction, the Red Bull Ring has hosted the DTM Series, F2 and also the FIA Historic Formula One Championship. In July 2013, Red Bull announced that the Austrian Grand Prix will return as a round of the Formula One World Championship in 2014. This was confirmed on 4 December 2013 when the

2014 Formula One schedule was released and included the Austrian Grand Prix which was held on 22 June 2014. The telecast of this year’s race begins at 8.10 p.m. Thai time and we will be watching in front of the big screen at Jameson’s Irish Pub (Soi AR) and we get there around 7 p.m. for something to eat and a convivial drink or two before the race starts. Come in a koala suit and barrack for another win for Ricciardo and I’ll get Kim Fletcher to buy you a beer or a eucalyptus leaf or something.

What did we learn from the French Grand prix? Bring on the clowns (AKA Eff Wun’s crop of overpaid prima donnas). How many times do I write, “You don’t win the race at the first corner, you only lose the race at the first corner.” So here we have a four times world champion in Sebastian Vettel saying, “My start was too good and then I ended up with nowhere to go,” he told reporters trying to explain how and why he hit Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) at the first corner. “Too good?” He received a five second penalty from the stewards for being too good. While all the mayhem was happening behind him, Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) just drove away from the rest and was never challenged, having collected pole position in Qualifying. This was a career 75th pole for Hamilton and he is undoubtedly the best driver in the current F1 field. Second placed Max Verstappen (Red Bull) was lucky at the first corner, taking to the outfield and rejoining in second, a place he was never to lose. After the race, Verstappen showed his immaturity saying he was “angry” with the press as he feels they do not treat Sebastian Vettel in the same way as him following the German’s collision at the French Grand Prix. Verstappen had started his season with six consecutive race weekends with an ontrack incident. “I hope when

we get to Austria that the journalists ask him if he will change his approach because that is what I heard for so many races,” Verstappen told Sky Sports F1. He continued his tantrum saying, “Mistakes happen and they happen to the best of us. But it makes me angry because they won’t be as bad on him as they were on me.” In a race of changing fortunes for the Ferrari number 2 driver, the loquacious Kimi Raikkonen lucked his way to the final step on the podium. With his seat likely to be whipped out from under him at the end of the year, Kimi should enjoy what is left of the season. Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull), running in third place for most of the race, and catching his team mate, had a front wing failure, dropping him back to 4th. Bad boy Vettel finished in 5th, one minute behind Ricciardo. “I don’t know if it was a failure or we hit some debris but that broke, so then already with the soft tyre, we were struggling when we left the pits and then I think a few laps later the team said the right part broke, so both parts identically seemed to break.” Questions will be asked back at the Milton Keynes factory. Hot property Charles Leclerc was the last of the point scorers in 10th in the Sauber, once again showing

a maturity greater than his age. Ferrari is the team where he should go. Romain Grosjean, the Haas driver who is remembered more for his crash history, finished 11th and after half the year is yet to score a point in the championship table, but scoring well in the ‘chumpionships’. There will be a seat vacant at Haas very shortly. Detroit (AP) - Bill Ford looks past the tons of paint, plaster and steel needed to remake Detroit’s blighted Michigan Central train station and sees more than just an iconic building in desperate need of a makeover. The executive chairman of Ford Motor Co. and greatgrandson of founder Henry Ford envisions the future of the carmaker’s foray into self-driving vehicles. Ford Motor Co. is embarking on a 4-year renovation of the 105-year-old depot and 17-story office tower just west of downtown. The massive project is expected to increase the automaker’s footprint in the city where the company was founded, provide space for electric and autonomous vehicle testing and research, and spur investment in the surrounding neighborhood. Ford will be reclaiming a derelict 20th century landmark, but it also will be using some iconic Motor City real estate to embark on a 21st century venture. “This had to make business sense for us,” Bill Ford told The Associated Press on Thursday. “We couldn’t just do this as a philanthropic endeavor. It really will become a statement for us and a great recruiting tool for the kind of talent we’re going to need to win in the autonomous vehicle war.” The company has said it

aims to have a self-driving vehicle on the market by 2021. The building’s sale was announced last week. The company will announce details of the renovation and its plans Tuesday. Bill Ford declined to say how much it cost to buy the 500,000-square-foot (46,450square-meter) building from Manuel “Matty” Moroun or how much the carmaker expects to spend fixing it up. An unrelated 2004 plan to convert the train station into Detroit’s police headquarters was expected to cost more than $100 million. The money for Ford’s project is coming from a pool set aside in 2016 to update the automaker’s headquarters in nearby Dearborn, though the company will also seek tax breaks and other incentives. “We had to make sure that this actually could fit into our existing budget, and thankfully it did,” Bill Ford said. The train station opened in 1913 and for decades was the hub of rail transportation into and out of Detroit. Travelers and visitors marveled at its robust columns that stretched to an ornately tiled ceiling. But passenger rail travel waned as road and air travel got easier, and the last train left Michigan Central in 1988. Scrappers stripped the vacant building of its metal and the thousands of broken windows allowed the elements to damage the walls, floors and ceilings,

depressing the property’s value. Along the way, Detroit slid toward fiscal collapse. The population has dropped by more than one million people since the 1950s. Tens of thousands of homes were left abandoned even before the city tumbled into and out of bankruptcy several years ago. The aging, hulking and empty Michigan Central exemplified Detroit’s plight. “It always really bothered me whenever you’d see a national story about the decay of Detroit” photos of the train station often were used, Bill Ford said while sitting in the depot’s cavernous passenger waiting room. “Then I started to think: ‘What if we could buy it, rehab it and not just make it a beautiful building - which we’re going to do - but make it something more?’” he said. “Make it really part of the reinvention of transportation for the future.” The rehabbed office tower will have room for about 5,000 workers, at least half of whom will be Ford’s. Restaurants, coffee shops, taverns and retail will fill the depot. “My vision is this becomes a gathering spot for people who want to meet family or friends and grab a cup of coffee or quick lunch or dinner and then go off and do something else in Detroit,” Ford added. “I want them to feel that this is going to be a really wonderful spot to be in, and that they will get excited about coming here.”

Autotrivia Quiz Last week I asked, who remembers the Leyland P76? A large car made in Australia and released at the wrong time. A 4.4 liter V8 engine was not popular as the country was going through a petrol crisis. Strikes by suppliers meant a backlog and eventually Leyland killed their own child. So, last week I asked, where did the hub caps come from on the first P76 used in promotional photography? The answer was Toyota because Leyland didn’t have the hub caps, but by masking

one leg of the T, it looked like an L for Leyland. So to this week. In 1923 why was there very little traffic on the roads on Sunday in Switzerland? For a free beer at the next car Club meeting (July 9 at Jamesons Irish Pub), be the first correct answer to email automania@ pattayamail.com or viacars@gmail.com. And in addition, if you are a Pattaya resident, the closest correct answer will win a free voucher for Casa Pascal’s Breakfast BBQ. Good luck!

Dibbayawan family celebrates three birthdays and one anniversary Jetsada Homklin

The birthday kids, Prem with his two lovely daughters-in-law Oranut and Suramon.

Time to blow out the candles and sing Happy Birthday!

Life-long friend Peter Malhotra brought joyful wishes for the Dibbayawan family.

Prominent lawyer and Past Rotary International District 3340 Governor Premprecha Dibbayawan celebrated his 79th birthday with a party at Prem’s Garden Restaurant on Soi Siam Country Club. The managing director of Jural Law and council member at Assumption Church threw the party June 15, four days ahead of his actual birthday, to jointly celebrate with daughters-in-law Oranut Dibbayawan, who was born June 13, and Suramon Dibbayawan, whose birthday was June 16. They are 48 and 45, respectively. The celebration also commemorated the 52nd wedding anniversary of Premprecha and Supanee Dibbayawan who were wed on June 18, 1966. Friends, business colleagues and local politicians assembled at the Prem Garden restaurant on Soi Siam Country Club for the soiree. Guests enjoyed a variety of food and beverages and the birthday celebrants received lots of presents. Rev. Philip Adisak Porn-gnam, pastor at the St. Nikolaus Church, officiated at the revelry giving his blessings to the trio, wishing them a healthy and happy year ahead. ‘Pa Prem’ as he is affectionately known, was born the 7th of 9 children in a Catholic family in Bangkok. He was also known as “Lang” – a nickname he was given at school because of his Thai/ European heritage (on both sides) giving him his clear

Monty and Suramon surprise their father with a birthday present. blue eyes and “falang” looks. As a child he studied at Assumption School in Sriracha, after which he was enrolled in the Assumption School in Bangkok. Even after he finished school, he did not really entertain the idea of tertiary education, and it was a classmate who enrolled him into the Thammasat Open University. He passed the entrance examination and commenced a law course. However, it was not plain sailing for the young Prem. Financial considerations dictated that he must work as well and he took a job as a steward in Thai International Airways. Supanee, lovingly known as ‘Paen’, is the 6th child in her family. She studied at Assumption Convent in Bangrak, finishing her high school studies at Triam Udom Sueksa School. She went on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce and Accounting from Chulalongkorn University. It could be said that he ‘flew through his studies’

but balancing married life, work and university was not easy. The circuitous route took seven years, but Prem was rewarded with his LLB degree and with high grades, enough to see him accepted at the University of Miami in America where he earned his Master’s degree. Premprecha started his professional career in 1965 as a legal advisor to many longestablished law firms in Bangkok. Before joining the Kamthorn Surachet and

Somsak firm as a senior lawyer, he was head of the Legal Department of Laem Thong Bank Public Co. (presently known as UOB Radanasin Public Co.). His first law office was located in Soi 6 when Pattaya City Hall was located there. The company was registered on Oct. 2, 1986 under the name PBM Law Real Estate and Service Co. On June 29, 1987, the company was renamed Jural Law Co. But as the population of Pattaya grew so did the need for a “one stop service” for legal and notary services. On Dec. 8, 1989, Puvana Co. Ltd. was born. In 2001, Puvana Co. Ltd. moved to larger premises on Thepprasit Road, together with Swiss business partners under the Swisssiam Services Co. Ltd. banner. Prem and Paen are now in their 70s and in between their service to the church and charity work in the community, the couple are still very active in the Jural Law and Accounting firm on Thepprasit Road. Success for this hard-working couple is the ability to be of service to others. This way of thinking they ascribe to their upbringing as young Catholics, where these values were instilled into them. Prem keeps saying that he would like to retire, “But I am not sure I could sit at home and do nothing.” We do not believe there would be any chance of that either! May God bless the benevolent Dibbayawan family with many more years of good health and happiness.

Band of brothers, (l-r) Chanodom Manawangpipat, Jedtharin Ninlapha, Steve Dibbayawan and Chanints Valtanavit.

Jural Law staff members and friends say happy birthday to their benevolent boss and his family.

Pattaya’s favorite pub? The “pub” is an integral part of the English speaking society. “Just nipping down the pub for a quick one.” or “Meet you in the pub.” A good pub is a necessity So what makes a great pub? Is it the décor? Plenty of wood everywhere. A long bar where you can stand and chat to the barkeep? A smoke-free area as well as a smokers al fresco. Big screen TV’s for the customers to follow their favorite football, rugby, boxing, motor sport, tiddlywinks or whatever. But there is another very important ingredient – the Landlord. Jameson’s Irish Pub (to give it its full title), has a very professional Landlord in Kim Fletcher. A pro, who was actually born in a pub, raised in a pub and knows everyone who walks in to his pub and which drink they have. For very regulars, that drink will be on the table before he sits down. The pub has an al fresco area outside which is the smoker ’s domain, while inside there is an area with two pool tables. There is

also a general area with large tables and chairs which leads off to another dining area with a huge TV screen, great for sitting and eating away from the crowd. The Long Bar area has its own regulars and is very much UK Pub style. From the general area you can also go into the ‘library’ with giant Chesterfield chairs to relax in and eat and drink from the

in cosmopolitan Pattaya. Main dishes are generally around B. 295-395 including the Jameson’s hamburger which has 250 gm of lean beef in a sesame seed bun, chips (get the Jameson’s chips rather than the straw variety) and side salad, plus at no extra charge, Cheddar cheese, fried onions, rashers of back bacon and a fried egg!

(B. 275-375). Sunday Roasts? Of course (B. 340-400) with cauliflower cheese, garden peas, broccoli, carrots, mashed and roast potatoes, pork sausage wrapped in bacon, sage and onion stuffing, Yorkshire pudding and gravy. Go there hungry! Another very British dish is the Jameson’s Parmo. Battered lean chicken or pork steak covered with a Red

Your egg and chips young sir. hefty menu. And of course there is a flat screen TV as well. The menu is a solid affair with around 70 dishes with photographs, so important

You need a big appetite for a Jameson’s Parmo.

Another dish we have tried on many occasions are the Fajitas, coming in vegetarian, chicken or beef

Leicester cheese sauce with sauté potatoes and garden peas and all for B. 350. A favorite is the Jameson’s KFC which has Kim’s Fried Chicken crumbed and deep fried with chips and coleslaw. The Kids menu has seven choices, all at B. 135 including a soft drink and a scoop of ice cream. Hamburger and chips rates high as does sausage and chips and chicken nuggets and chips likewise. There are also weekly rotating specials, so you have many choices. Thai dishes? Of course, and there are 37 choices with most under 200 baht.

Drinks? Pages of them (it is a pub after all) local bottled beers B. 105 and draught B 80. Wines generally around B. 150 per glass, plus pages of all kinds of tipples and cocktails I’ve never heard of! Jameson’s Pub, under Landlord Kim, really is one of the top watering holes in Pattaya. Good food, generous portions, and convivial atmosphere and not over the top pricewise either. Jameson’s is actually slightly off the ‘beaten track’, but even for newbies is very easy to find. Coming from Second Road (Sai 2), turn right into Soi 4 (on your right at the Bangkok Bank) and follow the road up and round

to the right and it is there, next to Nova Park on your left. Another way to get there is to come from North Pattaya Road, turning into the soi at the traffic lights leading to Big C. Follow that soi all the way down to the T-junction at the end and turn left and Nova Park and Jameson’s are there on your left. Jameson’s Irish Pub, 80/ 164 Moo 9, Soi Sukrudee (Soi AR), Central Pattaya. Secure parking. Avocado salad – spicy! Avocados are back again and the price this morning was quite reasonable and I find them irresistible, as do a lot of people! They are rich in flavor and texture and are perfect for use in a variety of salad recipes, and you can do far more with them than just making guacamole. Avocados are apparently loaded with nutrients such as dietary fiber, vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin E, potassium, magnesium, and folate, so you are doing your body a favor at the same time. The preparation of this salad is simple and quick, and the dressing is also easy.

Ingredients Serves 2 Avocados ripe 2 Tomato, large seeded and chopped 1 Red onion, chopped ½ Red chilli medium, chopped with seeds 1 Coriander chopped 2 tbspns

Cooking method Combine all ingredients in a large serving bowl and toss gently. Now prepare the salad dressing, which needs: Juice of 1 lime Balsamic vinegar 2 tbspns Extra virgin olive oil 1 tbspn Sea salt and freshly ground pepper a pinch Now combine all ingredients in a jar with a screw top. Kanyalak lifts Ladies European title in Pattaya

Thailand’s Kanyalak Preedasuttijit smiles as she holds the champion’s trophy following her victory at the Ladies European Thailand Championship at Phoenix Gold Golf Course in Pattaya, Sunday, June 24.

Kanyalak Preedasuttijit plays an approach shot during the final round at Phoenix Gold, Sunday, June 24.

Korean amateur Selin Hyun shot a final round 65 to take second place in the tournament.

Thailand’s Kanyalak Preedasuttijit won the Ladies European Thailand Championship on her home course at Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club in Pattaya last Sunday. With rounds of 70, 68, 66 and 69, the 20-year-old from Chonburi posted a winning total of 15-under-par, earning 45,000 euros and a place in this year’s two European Majors: the Ricoh Women’s British Open and The Evian Championship. She ended a stroke clear of 17-year-old Korean amateur Selin Hyun, who shot a sizzling 65 in the final round, improving by 10 strokes on her opening round of 75. Fellow Thai player Chonlada Chayanun shot 69

Thai player Arpichaya Yubol, 16, known as “Piano” was supported by her 13year-old brother as her caddie and shot a 66 to end in fifth spot at eight-under-par. Manon Molle from France shot a fine 67 and her scores improved dramatically over the weekend after she hired fellow Ladies European Tour professional Ariane Provot as her caddie, having pushed her own bag in stifling heat for the first two rounds. She tied for sixth with Thailand’s Supamas Sangchan, who won the Sanya Ladies Open in tropical Hainan, China, last year. There have been various claims and reports that some Asian players follow a rigorous schedule and there is

managed to control her emotions superbly in the stifling heat. The difficulty of playing in such difficult climatic conditions is that they can often test the emotions of the players and she personified calmness throughout the event. She said: “I tried to control my own game and it was very consistent, so I felt confident. I had practiced a lot at Phoenix, but I didn’t want to put pressure on myself so I didn’t look at the score.” This was Preedasuttijit’s third professional title, following wins on the Thai LPGA and China LPGA last year, but she only turned professional 15 months ago. The biggest factor in the

and ended four strokes back in third place, but took home the second prize money worth 27,000 euros due to Hyun’s amateur status. Anne Van Dam from the Netherlands closed with a 71 to end alone in fourth on nine-under-par. The final day was set up perfectly for a gripping climax. With a local golfer holding a four shot lead, the pack of players queuing up behind meant that nothing was guaranteed on the challenging Pattaya golf course, but no player would know the course better than the leader. As the sun once again dominated the Eastern Seaboard skyline, plenty of players went low from the start of the day.

no greater example of this than Chayanun, who has played in 14 tournaments across various tours over the last three months, which served her well. It was easy to see why Van Dam was strongly fancied to win, having lit up the course with her spectacular long game. However, things were not going her way on the greens over the weekend. Meanwhile, Hyun, playing in her second Ladies European Tour event after last year’s Vic Open, where she missed the cut, said that putting was the best part of her game and this will surely mark the start of a stellar career. Preedasuttijit, also known as “Bew” simply played the course to perfection and

end was the climate, with the relentless heat seeing many players flagging at the conclusion of the event. However, Sweden’s Lynn Carlsson coped well, firing a final round of 73 to share eighth with Thailand’s Aunchisa Autama and Pauline Del Rosario from the Philippines. Noemi Jimenez Martin, from Malaga in Spain, also finished strongly with a 69 to share 11th place.
