Fireworks festival makes colorful return to Pattaya

The International Fireworks Festival made a colorful return to Pattaya Beach with a bang and a flash, drawing ooohs and aaahs from a big low-season tourist crowd. Canceled in 2016 due to the royal mourning period and in 2017 after the Interior Ministry nixed its budget, the popular event was moved to June to power-up low season, a scheduling move that appeared to work. District Chief Naris Niramaiwong, flanked by soldiers, police and officials from the Chonburi Industry Ministry office, stormed DK Plastic (Thailand) in Takhiantia June 8 following a barrage of complaints from neighbors that the plant was releasing sewage into a local canal and employing illegal aliens. The plant, opened as a polyethylene-resins crusher,

was found to be holding hundreds of tons of electronic waste in the walledoff, four-rai property. Workers scattered as officers swooped in, but 21 Burmese nationals were taken into custody, 13 of which were found to have no work permit. Officers also recovered walkie-talkies, untaxed foreign cigarettes and gasspray lighters, all of which are illegal. An inspection of the property found plastic waste and other wastewater being illegally flushed into a waterway. Chinese manager Chen Youglin, 39, was arrested

after he failed to produce any legal permit or license for the facility to operate. Samruay Kemthong, the ministry office’s factory chief, said the Chinese owner of the factory was rejected for a business permit after leasing the land from Racha Jumbo Bag Co. However, the owner opened the business anyway. He said the plant violated a host of environmental and safety laws and illegally imported materials from overseas. Naris vowed full prosecution of the factory owner on at least six charges.

World ‘Garbage’ Day in Pattaya? Keng Na Songkhla Pattaya residents are grumbling that World Environment Day in Pattaya should have been renamed Garbage Day. The city has been struggling for more than a year with a growing mountain of trash that has overwhelmed both its rubbish hauler and dump sites. Pattaya Floating Market accused of flooding neighbors, blocking road Keng Na Songkhla Huay Yai residents say the Pattaya Floating Market is flooding their neighborhoods by improperly managing vacant land next to the Pattaya tourist attraction. Residents along Sukhumvit Soi 83 are complaining that Floating Market management has continually filled property it owns near the park, raising it to a higher level than surrounding land. But because the land-filling has been uneven and sporadic, large lakes form after heavy rain. The lakes then overflow and all the water runs downhill into their yards. Resident Somnuek Huayai, 70, said the land at issue had been public property for generations in Huay Yai, but was bought by the floating market several years ago. Fellow resident Pensri Hianchasri also complained that the market has illegally blocked roads near the vacant land since September last year.

Banglamung Beach is a popular destination for Thais on the weekend, but is inundated with litter and unregulated parking. However, after a local cable television show was inundated with complaints about litter on the beach and unregulated parking, the district government was forced to act. Deputy District Chief Narathip Fukruk said June 8 that “no littering” signs will be posted that threaten violators with fines. In addition, officers will be deployed on weekends and holidays to

corral the chaos that has become parking at the beach. Vendor Preamika Pleumarom said June 4 that merchants do their best to pick up litter before leaving the beach for the day and the district picks up the bins. However, she wanted to see “no littering” signs posted and regulatory officers patrolling the beach, writing fines to those tossing food containers and plastic bags on the sand.

Banglamung bolsters Pattaya-area pineapple farmers Jetsada Homklin Banglamung District is setting up markets and pushing hotels and government agencies to buy more pineapples after Pattaya-area growers flooded the market and crashed prices. All of Thailand currently is suffering from an oversupply of the signature fruit, a combination of poor planning by farmers and unseasonable rains that caused crops to ripen early. The glut has resulted in pineapple prices cratering, from the normal 4-5 baht per kilogram to as little as 2 baht. At a June 1 meeting with growers in Pong, Khao Maikaew and Huay Yai, Banglamung District Chief vowed to put the full weight of the local government into supporting the farmers, who had filled 12,000 rai with fruit they now can’t sell for

Banglamung also is organizing farmer’s markets for the pineapple growers, with Naris opening a market in front of the district office on June 4 and at Chaimongkol Temple on June 5. Both markets drew good crowds, even though farmers were selling their pineapples at up to 20 baht above current market rates. The national government also has gotten into the act, with the Cooperative Promotion Department asking the Livestock Development and local dairy cooperatives to use pineapples in animal feed. Other measures include establishing a pineapple distribution center in Rayong province and launching a public relations campaign with Siam Makro PLC to promote pineapple consumption.

Koh Larn survey details tourism, environmental woes tourists and the environmental problems are growing. The report will be passed on to the city council to consider as part of its plan to control the island’s growth, including possible limits on daily tourist arrivals or imposition of a fee to visit the island, which would suppress visits and generate funds for environmental protection.

Ampai Sakdanukuljit, assistant director of the Tourism and Sports Council, presented the Silapakorn University report his group commissioned to Pattaya Deputy Mayor Apichart Virapal, Tourism Authority of Thailand Pattaya office Director Suladda Sarutilavan, and police and military officials June 5. The 3,411-rai island, the report said, has 1,567 hotel rooms and attracts an average of 10,000 visitors a day, with that number more than doubling in high season and on holidays. Trump pledges security guarantees to North Korea after summit Zeke Miller, Catherine Lucey, Josh Lederman and Foster Klug Singapore (AP) - President Donald Trump and North K o r e a ’s K i m J o n g U n concluded an extraordinary nuclear summit Tuesday with the U.S. president pledging unspecified “security guarantees” to the North and Kim recommitting to the “complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.” They coupled the summit agreement with lofty promises by Trump to handle “a very dangerous problem” and Kim’s prediction for “major change.”

previous public statements and past commitments. It did not include an agreement to take steps toward ending the technical state of warfare between the U.S. and North Korea. The pair promised in the document to “build a lasting and stable peace regime” on the Korean Peninsula and to repatriate remains of prisoners of war and those missing in action during the Korean War. Language on North Korea’s bombs was similar to what the leaders of North and South Korea came up with at their own summit in April. At the time, the Koreans faced criticism for essentially kicking the issue of North

U.S. President Donald Trump holds up the document that he and North Korea leader Kim Jong Un just signed at the Capella resort on Sentosa Island Tuesday, June 12, 2018 in Singapore. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci) Meeting with staged ceremony on a Singapore island, Trump and Kim came together for a summit that seemed unthinkable months ago, clasping hands in front of a row of alternating U.S. and North Korean flags, holding a one-on-one meeting, additional talks with advisers and a working lunch. Both leaders expressed optimism throughout roughly five hours of talks, with Trump thanking Kim afterward “for taking the first bold step toward a bright new future for his people.” Trump added during a news conference that Kim has before him “an opportunity like no other” to bring his country back into the community of nations if he agrees to give up his nuclear program. Light on specifics, the document signed by the leaders largely amounted to an agreement to continue discussions as it echoed

Korea’s nuclear arsenal down the road to Tuesday’s TrumpKim summit. Trump and Kim even directly referenced the so-called Panmunjom Declaration, which contained a weak commitment to denuclearization and no specifics on how to achieve it. The formal document signing followed a series of meetings at a luxury Singapore resort. After the signing, Trump said he expected to “meet many times” in the future with Kim and, in response to questions, said he “absolutely” would invite Kim to the White House. For his part, Kim hailed the “historic meeting” and said they “decided to leave the past behind.” In a moment that would never happen in North Korea, reporters began yelling questions to Trump and Kim after they signed the document, including whether they had discussed the case of Otto Warmbier, the American

(Host Broadcaster Mediacorp Pte Ltd via AP) college student who suffered brain damage while in North Korean custody and died in June 2017, days after he was returned home to Ohio. In the run-up to the meeting, Trump had predicted the two men might strike a nuclear deal or forge a formal end to the Korean War in the course of a single meeting or over several days. But in the hours before the summit, the White House unexpectedly announced Trump would depart Singapore earlier than expected - Tuesday evening raising questions about whether his aspirations for an ambitious outcome had been scaled back. The meeting was the first between a sitting U.S. president and a North Korean leader. Aware that the eyes of the world were on a moment many people never expected to see, Kim said many of those watching would think it was a scene from a “science fiction movie.” After meeting privately and with aides, Trump and Kim moved into the luncheon at a long flower-bedecked table. As they entered, Trump injected some levity to the day’s extraordinary events, saying: “Getting a good picture everybody? So we look nice and handsome and thin? Perfect.” Then they dined on beef short rib confit along with sweet and sour crispy pork. And as they emerged from the meal for a brief stroll together, Trump appeared to delight in showing his North Korean counterpart the interior of

“The Beast,” the famed U.S. presidential limousine known for its high-tech fortifications. Critics of the summit leapt at the leaders’ handshake and the moonlight stroll Kim took Monday night along the glittering Singapore waterfront, saying it was further evidence that Trump was helping legitimize Kim on the world stage. Kim has been accused of horrific rights abuses against his people. “It’s a huge win for Kim Jong Un, who now - if nothing else has the prestige and propaganda coup of meeting one on one with the president, while armed with a nuclear deterrent,” said Michael Kovrig, a northeast Asia specialist at the International Crisis Group in Washington. Trump responded to such commentary on Twitter, saying: “The fact that I am having a meeting is a major loss for the U.S., say the haters & losers.” But he added “our

hostages” are back home and testing, research and launches have stopped. Giving voice to the anticipation felt around the world as the meeting opened, South Korean President Moon Jaein said Tuesday he “hardly slept” before the summit. Moon and other officials watched the live broadcast of the summit before a South Korean Cabinet meeting in his presidential office. The summit capped a dizzying few days of foreign policy activity for Trump, who shocked U.S. allies over the weekend by using a meeting in Canada of the Group of Seven industrialized economies to alienate America’s closest friends in the West. Lashing out over trade practices, Trump lobbed insults at his G-7 host, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trump left that summit early and, as he flew to Singapore, tweeted that he was yanking

the U.S. out of the group’s traditional closing statement. The optimistic summit was a remarkable change in dynamics from less than a year ago, when Trump was threatening “fire and fury” against Kim, who in turn scorned the American president as a “mentally deranged U.S. dotard.” Beyond the impact on both leaders’ political fortunes, the summit could shape the fate of countless people - the citizens of impoverished North Korea, the tens of millions living in the shadow of the North’s nuclear threat, and millions more worldwide. Alluding to the North’s concerns that giving up its nuclear weapons could surrender its primary deterrent to forced regime change, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters that the U.S. was prepared to take action to provide North Korea with “sufficient certainty” that denuclearization “is not something that ends badly for them.” He would not say whether that included the possibility of withdrawing U.S. troops from the Korean Peninsula, but said the U.S. was “prepared to take what will be security assurances that are different, unique, than America’s been willing to provide previously.” The North has faced crippling diplomatic and economic sanctions as it has advanced development of its nuclear and ballistic missile programs. Pompeo held firm to Trump’s position that sanctions will remain in place until North Korea denuclearizes - and said they would even increase if diplomatic discussions did not progress positively.

Revenue Department set to become Digital RD in 2020 Thailand’s Revenue Department (RD) is preparing to apply new technologies to its operations, in a move to become a digital organization within the next two years. Director-General of the Revenue Department Ekniti Nitithanprapas said it will utilize digital technologies to handle all types of tasks, such as e-filing, e-tax invoice, e-receipt and SME single accounting. He asserted that the move will improve the country’s tax collection system and facilitate the management of big data, which is linked to state enterprises and related agencies. According to the department’s head, data analytics will be incorporated into all stages of tax collection, including the estimation of corporate income tax, tax collection analysis, risk management and tax audits. The Revenue Department this year expects 1.86 trillion baht in tax revenue and aims to collect two

trillion baht next year. The RD will also revamp its international income tax system to promote equality between Thai and foreign businesses and increase international tax audits to pave the way for e-commerce taxation. Legislative amendments are underway to facilitate the restructuring process. However, Director-General Ekniti insisted there are no plans to raise value-added tax (VAT) above 7% this year, as the country’s economy

Buying a large dog

I haven’t got a dog and a cat just doesn’t cut it as far as a robbery deterrent. Some time back, in the “film” days of photography I was robbed. It is still painful to recall the event. My cameras are not just means of earning a living, they were also my friends, so to lose one is a disaster. Ask any photojournalist how they feel without a camera and they will all tell you the same story - it is like having your arm chopped off! In my case, I would carry my cameras in a large battered

grey bag. Two Nikon FA’s, one Nikon FM2N, a couple of motor drives, a Metz 45 CT1 flash, plus filters, three lenses, tripod adapter for a Manfrotto tripod, spare cables, wires, black tape and a notebook. Two of the three cameras were always preloaded with film and a lens mounted ready to go. This is nothing out of the ordinary, it is just the usual kit and kaboodle for an active commercial photographer. Keep reading, as much of this tale may refer to you. The other evening, my wife and I went out to dinner, leaving the porch light on to make finding the keys for the triple locked front door easier when we came back. Returning an hour later we noticed the porch light was off. Having been robbed last year and my wife losing all her jewelry, I opened the front door with dread.

Dear Hillary, I have had the secret police monitor the Pattaya Mail offices for the past week to report back to me when you come in or out of the building. So far they have recorded 195 women, which means that 194 of the reports were not you. Please wear something bright so that we can identify you. Jack and the Boys Hello there Jack and the Boys, Sorry to disappoint you, my Purple Petunia Petals but I was out of town all last week, so of course I was not even any one of your 195. With modern communications such as they are, I send all my replies in by carrier pigeon. Please do not shoot the pigeon down, they are getting quite expensive and take some time in training. Dear Hillary I have been living in Pattaya for six months now and have decided it is really the place I want to retire. I have a wonderful relationship with the most perfect Thai girl, Noi, although we are just living together and are not married. She is not as keen as I am to get married and not because of our twenty years age difference, either. She thinks she will lose all property rights once she is legally married to a foreigner. My problem is that I like apartment living and want to buy a bigger condo with better beach views, in my name. Noi likes living with me in my rented condo and has no problem with heights, it’s just that she is putting a lot of pressure on me to buy a house instead and put it in her name. Hillary, can you tell me, is it possible for me to get the house in my name too? Peter

My fears were totally founded. We were greeted by entire chaos. Every drawer in the house had been tipped out on the ground, every cupboard’s contents strewn all over the floor and the hatch in the bathroom ominously open. Also ominously open was the battered grey camera bag, which had been left behind for once, since I was having a “night off”. Needless to say, the bag was empty, other than the flash gun and a few filters that the kamoy had left behind.

With the house dead-locked everywhere and all windows barred, the kamoy had removed some roof tiles and come in through the ceiling. Apparently this is a common way to gain entry to what is otherwise an “impenetrable” home. The felon comes one evening and removes the roof tiles then returns the next day and does a quick robbery as soon as the occupants are out, taking anything that is small, valuable and easily carried. Like my cameras! So what can you do to try

Dear Peter, In a word - No! You have to ask yourself serious questions on why girlfriend Noi is so fixated on property. Believe me, there are many beautiful Thai women who may display more loving and less avaricious tendencies, never mind the age difference. The current legal situation about Thai property titles is this, a foreigner (read non-Thai or farang) may own a condo in their own name. They may not own a house or land solely or partly in their own name. The only way farangs may “own” a house is to form a Thai company with the aid of a trusted English speaking lawyer and Thai nominees and then that company owns the title to the house. Even then, there are some legal problems. As in all dealings, Caveat Emptor, Buyer Beware. Be very aware! Dear Hillary, I am planning to travel to Pattaya where I have been many times already and I would like you to give me some advice: is Viagra available in Pattaya, with or without prescription and how much does it cost? I can get it in France where I live, but I find it embarrassing to get a prescription from the family doctor. Frenchy Dear Frenchy, Of course it is available in Pattaya! This is not Outer Mongolia and the local streets are crawling with randy males, like yourself. The question you should ask yourself is why you would be embarrassed asking your own doctor? As in France, this is a prescription only drug and

and stop this dreadful scenario happening to you? Well, the first thing is to attempt to make your home as secure as you can possibly make it. Consider bars in the ceiling as well as the usual ones on the windows. Motion detectors around the house can make sense. So does a large dog. After all that, what else can you do to protect your investment in camera gear (and other valuables)? Well, it’s called insurance. I was led to believe that cameras

could not be insured, so did not have any insurance. This was incorrect advice. A very brief chat with Jack Levy at Macallan Insurance Brokers revealed that you can insure your cameras against theft from your home. This is as part of the house insurance policy. You would, of course, have to detail all the items you want to insure on the policy. Of course, insurance does not stop your cameras being stolen. Insurance also does not replace your prized camera with one exactly the same - in many instances this may be impossible following model changes and availability from the manufacturers and other such variables. In my case, the beloved Nikon FA’s are definitely not the current model, but at least it will be such that you can go shopping without it costing you an arm and a leg. Being robbed of anything is a dreadful experience. Losing your cameras really is like losing an arm, a devastating experience. I sincerely hope this never happens to you, but in the meantime a large dog will help.

as such, is expensive, and you need to be free of heart problems before you take it. Check your heart before Willy the Wonder Wand! Finally, be aware there are “knock off” copies of Viagra on the black market here. Screw up your courage and talk to your doctor first. Dear Hillary, What do you do about house guests that keep on arriving from the old country? I’ve had five sets this year and it looks like there are more coming for Xmas. If I had nothing else to do other than entertain old friends then it would be fine, but I have work to do as well. I don’t want to give old friends the cold shoulder, but I’m at my wits end, honestly! What should I do? Guesthouse Gertie Dear Gertie, This is a very common problem when you live in a place that other people save for 11 months to come and visit. It is also very normal for your old friends to want to see you, and possibly save some money by staying with you. You actually have the answer already when you called yourself “Guesthouse” Gertie. The government is cracking down on unregistered guest houses, so you have the ideal let out. Love to have you, but it is now illegal. Meet them for dinner at 7 p.m. and do things together from there. I am sure your friends will appreciate that even though they are on holidays, you are not. They need time to themselves too and will be grateful for the chances to explore on their own. Have some brochures for them with suggested trips and let them take it from there. You can do your work, and you can enjoy each other’s company at night. Just think about it, you can even get one of those nice wooden signs with “Gerties” carved into it.

Stroke You can add “Stroke” to the list of conditions you don’t want. You can also add “stroke” to the list of conditions that is under your control. Having a Stroke is one of the less fortunate outcomes of pre-existing disease processes. Of course, true to medical form, we have a series of initials to cover this condition, which we generally call a CVA, standing for Cerebro Vascular Accident. However, make no mistake about it, this condition is not an ‘accident’ by any means. The simplest description of Stroke is what happens after an area of one’s brain becomes starved for oxygen. This in turn leads to death of brain tissue (called an infarction), and stops the functions which that particular part of the brain used to control. For example, if it is a motor area, then the person cannot move the muscles to move their limbs. If it is an area that initiates speech, then the person cannot remember the word he wants to use, leading to extreme speech difficulties. If it is an area dealing with memory of events, then they are lost as well. Remember that your brain has some very specific centers, or areas, controlling the complex function of the body. Now how does the brain starve of oxygen? This happens by bleed or blockage. A bleed occurs when an

artery in the brain “blows off” and the oxygen rich blood escapes. A blockage occurs when either a clot has formed somewhere in the body and then it moves and jams in the cerebral (brain) arterial system or when the clot forms initially in a pre-existing narrowing in one of the cerebral arteries. So what are the conditions that lead up to these events? A bleed can occur if there is a weakness in the wall of a cerebral artery (a common one is called the Berry Aneurysm of the Circle of Willis at the base of the brain) or if the Blood Pressure (BP - initials again!) has become dangerously high. A blockage, however, will occur especially if there is a cholesterol based narrowing called “Atheroma”, sometimes known as “hardening” of the arteries, in one of the cerebral arteries. This is called a cerebral thrombosis. The moving clot situation can occur after trauma or even with certain heart conditions and is known as a cerebral embolism. So what can you do to try and avoid this catastrophic condition? Well firstly, get your blood pressure checked and if it is found that you have persistent hypertension go on treatment! BP is controllable, once you know you have an elevated pressure. Secondly, get your cholesterol checked. If it is high you are running the risk of a thrombus forming. What to do? Go

on a cholesterol reducing diet, or even tablets if necessary. It is possible to reduce your cholesterol, once you know you have an elevated cholesterol. The next piece of advice has mixed reviews with medical researchers. This is to take half an adult Aspirin a day. Yes, it has been found that 100 mg of Aspirin stops the red blood cells “clumping” together and predisposing towards a blood clot. There are also some Aspirin forms made specifically for this preventive effect and a well-known one has the brand name “Cardiprin” and is available readily in Pattaya. Family history comes in here too. If your forebears had strokes, it does mean that you should take my advice even more seriously. The researchers have also found that smokers get more strokes than non-smokers. As well as all the other conditions you don’t want, smoking makes you more susceptible to all of them. Just another of the thousands of reasons to give up smoking. I do recommend checking for the various stroke predisposing factors at least once a year. Incorporate them in your annual check-up. After that, it is just a case of remaining generally fit, having regular exercise and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Have you looked at your Stroke Risk Factors recently? Do it!

Many breast cancer patients can skip chemo, big study finds Marilynn Marchione Chicago (AP) - Most women with the most common form of early-stage breast cancer can safely skip chemotherapy without hurting their chances of beating the disease, doctors are reporting from a landmark study that used genetic testing to gauge each patient’s risk. The study is the largest ever done of breast cancer treatment, and the results are expected to spare up to 70,000 patients a year in the United States and many more elsewhere the ordeal and expense of these drugs. “The impact is tremendous,” said the study leader, Dr. Joseph Sparano of Montefiore Medical Center in New York. Most women in this situation don’t need treatment beyond surgery and hormone therapy, he said. The study was funded by the National Cancer Institute, some foundations and proceeds from the U.S. breast cancer postage stamp. Results were discussed Sunday at an American Society of Clinical Oncology conference in Chicago and published by the New England Journal of Medicine. Some study leaders consult for breast cancer drugmakers or for the company that makes the gene test.

Moving away from chemo Cancer care has been evolving away from chemotherapy - older drugs with harsh side effects - in favor of gene-targeting therapies, hormone blockers and immune system treatments. When chemo is used now, it’s sometimes for shorter

In this Thursday, May 24, 2018 photo, Adine Usher, 78, meets with breast cancer study leader Dr. Joseph Sparano at the Montefiore and Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx borough of New York. Usher was one of about 10,000 participants in the study which shows women at low or intermediate risk for breast cancer recurrence may safely skip chemotherapy without hurting their chances of survival. (AP Photo/Kathy Young) periods or lower doses than it once was. For example, another study at the conference found that Merck’s immunotherapy drug Keytruda worked better than chemo as initial treatment for most people with the most common type of lung cancer, and with far fewer side effects. The breast cancer study focused on cases where chemo’s value increasingly is in doubt: women with early-stage disease that has not spread to lymph nodes, is hormone-positive (meaning its growth is fueled by estrogen or progesterone) and is not the type that the drug Herceptin targets. The usual treatment is surgery followed by years of a

hormone-blocking drug. But many women also are urged to have chemo to help kill any stray cancer cells. Doctors know that most don’t need it, but evidence is thin on who can forgo it. The study gave 10,273 patients a test called Oncotype DX, which uses a biopsy sample to measure the activity of genes involved in cell growth and response to hormone therapy, to estimate the risk that a cancer will recur.

and half also got chemo. After nine years, 94 percent of both groups were still alive, and about 84 percent were alive without signs of cancer, so adding chemo made no difference. Certain women 50 or younger did benefit from chemo; slightly fewer cases of cancer spreading far beyond the breast occurred among some of them given chemo, depending on their risk scores on the gene test.

What the study found

Will people trust the results?

About 17 percent of women had high-risk scores and were advised to have chemo. The 16 percent with low-risk scores now know they can skip chemo, based on earlier results from this study. The new results are on the 67 percent of women at intermediate risk. All had surgery and hormone therapy,

All women like those in the study should get gene testing to guide their care, said Dr. Richard Schilsky, chief medical officer of the oncology society. Oncotype DX costs around $4,000, which Medicare and many insurers cover. Similar tests including one called MammaPrint also are widely used.

Testing solved a big problem of figuring out who needs chemo, said Dr. Harold Burstein of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. Many women think “if I don’t get chemotherapy I’m going to die, and if I get chemo I’m going to be cured,” but the results show there’s a sliding scale of benefit and sometimes none, he said. Dr. Lisa Carey, a breast specialist at the University of North Carolina’s Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, said she would be very comfortable advising patients to skip chemo if they were like those in the study who did not benefit from it. Dr. Jennifer Litton at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, agreed, but said: “Risk to one person is not the same thing as risk to another. There are some people who say, ‘I don’t care what

you say, I’m never going to do chemo,’” and won’t even have the gene test, she said. Others want chemo for even the smallest chance of benefit. Adine Usher, 78, who lives in Hartsdale, New York, joined the study 10 years ago at Montefiore and was randomly assigned to the group given chemo. “I was a little relieved. I sort of viewed chemo as extra insurance,” she said. The treatments “weren’t pleasant,” she concedes. Her hair fell out, she developed an infection and was hospitalized for a low white blood count, “but it was over fairly quickly and I’m really glad I had it.” If doctors had recommended she skip chemo based on the gene test, “I would have accepted that,” she said. “I’m a firm believer in medical research.”

Girls discover World War I practice bomb in Michigan lake Argentine Township, Mich. (AP) - Two girls have found what authorities say is a World War I-era practice bomb while swimming in a lake in Michigan. The Flint Journal reports that 10-year-old Paige Burnett and 9-year-old Sage Menzies were searching for items below the surface of Lobdell Lake Tuesday when Paige felt something unusual. The girls and Sage’s mother dragged the 3-foot-long mystery find from the murky water. Paige says they were excited at first, but then got worried. She says she was “so scared” it might explode. The lake is in Genesee County’s Argentine Township, about 45 miles northwest of Detroit. Township police Sgt. Douglas Fulton says the Michigan State Police’s bomb squad came out and drilled a hole in it, but “nothing but mud came out.” (Jake May/The Flint Journal via AP)

Hazardous golf: Utah couple flees lumbering moose Park City, Utah (AP) - A Utah couple ran into a different sort of hazard during a round of golf on Memorial Day near Salt Lake City. A young moose bigger than their golf cart chased them off the links at the Park City Golf Club. Emily Clearwater of Phoenix says she watched the scene unfold from a relative’s home nearby and took a video when she realized it was following them. She said the young-looking moose went after the cart twice but eventually lost interest. Golfer Mark Redican told the Deseret News he was getting ready to hit a shot when his wife started yelling. They jumped in the cart and made an escape as the animal headed off to a nearby pond. He says the animal wasn’t super aggressive, but it was “gigantic” so they didn’t hang around.

Idaho teacher accused of feeding puppy to turtle is charged Preston, Idaho (AP) - An Idaho teacher accused of feeding a sick puppy to a snapping turtle in front of several students has been charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty. Preston Junior High School science teacher Robert Crosland was charged Friday. He faces up to six months in jail and a $5,000 fine if convicted. The school is in rural Preston, where the 2004 teen cult classic film “Napoleon Dynamite” was set. The Idaho attorney general’s office handled the investigation after Franklin County Prosecutor Vic Pearson cited a conflict of interest. Several parents came forward to say Crosland fed the puppy to the turtle on March 7. Several weeks later, state officials seized the turtle and euthanized it as a non-native species. Attempts to reach Crosland at the school Friday were not successful.

Sydney (AP) - A hotel valet had a lucky escape - but the luxury sports car he was trying to park did not. Australian media say the valet drove the soft-top Porsche Carrera under another vehicle Thursday outside the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Sydney. Emergency workers cut the driver out from the Porsche as a crowd watched. Matthew Talbot, the hotel’s director of sales and marketing, told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. the valet was “embarrassed and a little bit shocked” but was OK. The larger vehicle was propped up and its wheels were anchored while the vehicles were separated. The black Porsche, its hood and front bumper crunched and dented, was then backed onto a tow truck. Witness Jonathan Bayle said he thought a television show or movie was being shot. The hotel said in a statement it was investigating.

Facebook kills ‘trending’ topics, tests breaking news label Barbara Ortutay New York (AP) - Facebook is shutting down its ill-fated “trending” news section after four years, a company executive told The Associated Press. The company claims the tool is outdated and wasn’t popular. But the trending section also proved problematic in ways that would presage Facebook’s later problems with fake news, political balance and the limitations of artificial intelligence in managing the messy human world. When Facebook launched “trending” in 2014 as a list of headlines to the side of the main news feed, it was a straightforward move to steal users from Twitter by giving them a quick look at the most popular news of the moment. It fit nicely into CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s pledge just a year earlier to make Facebook its users’ “personal newspaper.” But that was then. “Fake news” wasn’t yet a popular term, and no foreign country had been accused of trying to influence the U.S. elections through social media, as Russia later would be. Trending news that year included the death of Robin Williams, Ebola and the World Cup. Facebook is now testing new features, including a “breaking news” label that publishers can add to stories to distinguish them from other chatter. Facebook also

wants to make local news more prominent. “It’s very good to get rid of ‘trending,’” said Frank Pasquale, a law professor at the University of Maryland and expert on algorithms and society. He said algorithms are good for very narrow, well-defined tasks. By contrast, he said, deciding what news stories should go in “trending” requires broad thinking, quick judgments about context and decisions about whether someone is trying to game the system. In an interview ahead of Friday’s announcement, Facebook’s head of news products, Alex Hardiman, said the company is still committed to breaking and real-time news. But instead of having Facebook’s moderators, human or otherwise, make editorial decisions, there’s been a subtle shift to let news organizations do so. According to the Pew Research Center, 44 percent of U.S. adults get some or all of their news through Facebook. Troubles with the trending section began to emerge in 2016, when the company was accused of bias against conservatives, based on the words of an anonymous former contractor who said Facebook downplayed conservative issues in that feature and promoted liberal causes. Zuckerberg met with prominent right-wing leaders at the company’s headquarters in an attempt at damage control.

This Thursday, May 31, 2018, photo shows the Trending section on a Facebook account in New York. Facebook is shutting down its ill-fated “trending” news section after four years. (AP Photo/ Richard Drew) Yet two years later, Facebook still hasn’t been able to shake the notion of bias. In late 2016, Facebook fired the human editors who worked on the trending topics and replaced them with software that was supposed to be free of political bias. Instead, the software algorithm began to pick out posts that were getting the most attention, even if the information in them was bogus. In early 2017, Facebook made another attempt to fix the trending section, this time by including only topics covered by several news publishers. The thinking was that coverage by just one outlet could be a sign that the news is fake. The troubles underscore the difficulty of relying on computers, even artificial intelligence, to make sense of

Pompeii: New find shows man crushed trying to flee eruption

Anthropologist Valeria Amoretti works with a brush on a skeleton of a victim of the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in A.D. 79, which destroyed the ancient town of Pompeii, at Pompeii’ archeological site, near Naples, on Tuesday, May 29, 2018. The skeleton was found during recent excavations and is believed to be of a 35-year-old man with a limp who was hit by a pyroclastic cloud during the eruption. (Ciro Fusco/ANSA via AP) Milan (AP) - Officials at the Pompeii archaeological site have announced a dramatic new discovery, the skeleton of a man crushed by an enormous stone while trying to flee the explosion of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Pompeii officials on Tuesday released a photograph

showing the skeleton protruding from beneath a large block of stone that may have been a door jamb that had been “violently thrown by the volcanic cloud.” The victim, who was over 30, had his thorax crushed. Archaeologists have not found the victim’s head. Officials

said the man suffered an infection of the tibia, which may have caused walking difficulties, impeding his escape. The archaeological site’s general director, Massimo Osanna, called it “an exceptional find,” that contributes to a better “picture of the history and civilization of the age.”

the messy human world without committing obvious, sometimes embarrassing and occasionally disastrous errors. Ultimately, Facebook appears to conclude that trying to fix the headaches around trending wasn’t worth the meager benefit the company, users and news publishers saw in it. “There are other ways for us to better invest our resources,” Hardiman said. Pasquale said Facebook’s new efforts represent “very slow steps” toward an acknowledgement that the company is making editorial

judgments when it decides what news should be shown to users - and that it needs to empower journalists and editors to do so. But what needs to happen now, he added, is a broad shift in the company’s corporate culture, recognizing the expertise involved in journalistic judgment. The changes and features Facebook is putting out, he said, are being treated as “bug fixes” - addressing single problems the way engineers do. “What they are not doing is giving an overall account of their mission on how these fixes fit together,” Pasquale said. The “breaking news” label that Facebook is testing with 80 news publishers around the world will let outlets such as The Washington Post add a red label to indicate that a story is breaking news, highlighting it for users who want accurate information as things are happening. “Breaking news has to look different than a recipe,” Hardiman said. Another feature, called “Today In,” shows people breaking news in their area from local publishers,

officials and organizations. It’s being tested out in 30 markets in the U.S. Hardiman says the goal is to help “elevate great local journalism.” The company is also funding news videos, created exclusively for Facebook by outside publishers it would not yet name. It plans to launch this feature in the next few months. Facebook says the trending section wasn’t a popular feature to begin with. It was available only in five countries and accounted for less than 1.5 percent of clicks to the websites of news publishers, according to the company. While Facebook got outsized attention for the problems the trending section had perhaps because it seemed popular with journalists and editors - neither its existence nor its removal makes much of a difference when it comes with Facebook’s broader problems with news. Hardiman said ending the trending section feels like letting a child go. But she said Facebook’s focus now is prioritizing trustworthy, informative news that people find useful.

Distracted by technology? Microsoft tries to help Matt O’Brien (AP) - Technology companies whose devices and constantly scrolling online services have driven us to distraction are beginning to acknowledge that their products can be a waste of time. Some of them now say they’re trying to help. Microsoft is rolling out a free update to its Windows 10 computer operating system Monday with new features to keep people in a distractionfree zone. The “Focus Assist” feature enables workers to temporarily switch off email and social media notifications during times when they need to keep their heads down. They can allow messages from certain people to break through. Microsoft says the update is inspired by research showing office workers are being interrupted or having to switch tasks about every three minutes - and it takes 23 minutes to get back in focus. Microsoft is also adding a “Timeline” feature aimed at saving time by more easily retrieving documents or unfinished work from the past 30 days. “Almost every application and web service is vying for your attention,” said Aaron Woodman, a marketing general manager for Microsoft Windows. “Increasingly,

Microsoft rolled out a free update to its Windows 10 computer operating system Monday, April 30, 2018, that includes new features to keep people in a distraction-free zone. (AP Photo/Richard Drew, File) people are going to prefer environments where they can control and manage their distractions.” It may be easier for Microsoft to create such limits, as its business is far less reliant on advertising than Google and Facebook. With advertising in the mix, more time spent means more revenue. Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android phones have “Do Not Disturb” modes for muting notifications. Microsoft’s biggest email rival, Gmail, began rolling out a redesign this week that includes timesaving measures. One uses artificial intelligence to allow

Google to help respond to emails with quick answers such as “Will do, thanks!” or “Sorry, I won’t be able to attend.” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg surprised investors earlier this year when he said he welcomed the idea of fewer hours spent on his site, arguing that “helping people connect is more important than maximizing the time people spend on Facebook.” The social network also on Friday said it is adding a “sleep” mode to its Messenger Kids service to let parents limit when their kids can use it.

Wellness travel: It’s more than just staying fit on the road Kelli Kennedy Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (AP) - It’s one thing when hotels open fitness centers, but quite another when fitness centers open hotels. Luxe gym Equinox is opening a hotel in New York’s new Hudson Yards neighborhood next year in a move that embodies the evolution of wellness travel. Most hotels have beefed up fitness options - you can book rooms with stationary bikes and rent workout clothes - but wellness travel has become much more than just keeping fit while on the road. Increasingly it’s become the point of the journey. And it’s bringing in big dollars. Whether it’s foraging for your own medicinal herbs in Peru, cycling across the California coastline or spending several thousand dollars to workout alongside celeb trainer Tracy Anderson in Aspen, Colorado, wellness tourists made 691 million trips in 2015, according to the Global Wellness Institute.

In the past, wellness vacations straddled between starvation-style boot camps or relaxing spa weekends to detox from an unhealthy lifestyle. But as self-care has evolved into a daily goal, it’s found an obvious match in travel. International and domestic wellness tourism brought in $563 billion in 2015, up from $489 billion in 2013, according to the Global Wellness Institute. Wellness travel is expected to grow to $808 billion by 2020. The travel trend has mirrored the shift in retail. Gone are the days when shoppers

head to a brick-and-mortar store to buy shoes that they could buy online. Instead, they’re being lured to stores by experiences. Similarly, vacationers are less excited about lying on the beach with umbrella drinks. They too want a more immersive experience, like a yoga meditation retreat or surf camp, to connect with others and revitalize themselves, experts say. “(Fitness has) gone from being an activity to now it’s a destination. It’s a purpose,” said Marshal Cohen, an analyst for the trend group NPD.

We’re not building wardrobes anymore. We’re building memories and the photos we’re clicking on our phones and posting on social media are the fruits of our labor.” The Curtain Bluff resort in Antigua launched a new wellness concierge where guests can meet with the team at no extra charge to design their own fitness program including everything from zumba to pilates. guests can focus on fitness, weight loss, digestive cleanses or mental awareness during a three- to 14-night vacation. Offerings include reiki, an alternative stress-reduction therapy, and life-coaching. The trend is even spilling over to cruises, once stereotyped as weight-gaining vacations with bottomless buffets. Now, wellness can be the point of the cruise. Holland America Line, in partnership with O, The Oprah Magazine, has programs for meditation and healthy living.

Cruise passengers can also combine wellness with sightseeing in ports of call. Take a shore excursion on a Regents Seven Seas cruise, for example, and you might end up doing yoga on a coconut plantation in Koh Samui, Thailand, or outdoor tai chi in Marseille, France, with a view of the sea on one side and a palace on the other. Roughly 100,000 wellness lovers attended uber-popular Wanderlust festivals across North America last year, partaking in everything from yoga and meditation to stand-up paddleboarding and spinning in spots like Oahu, Hawaii, and Squaw Valley, California. Meghan Aftosmis loved Wanderlust’s Vermont event so much last year that she’s heading back in a few weeks. The 39-year-old public relations exec from Delaware says she was eager to take yoga classes with one of the celebrity teachers. She also took a poetry session with a teacher she’d been following online. “It comes down to having an experience and especially in the summer I look for new adventures,” she said.

Byrd and the Bees William Byrd was one of the most celebrated composers of the Shakespearean Era remembered today for his fine choral works and his contribution to Elizabethan keyboard music. As to the Bees, well, anyone who has accumulated a collection of classical CDs knows only too well that you need a disproportionate amount of shelf space to accommodate their music. I am of course referring to all those composers whose surnames begin with the letter “B”. I have no idea why, but there do seem to be an awful lot of them. I suppose most people know the names of the Big

Boris Blacher. Bees like Beethoven, Brahms, Berlioz and Bruckner. The seventeenth century saw the emergence of the influential

Bach family in Germany. In the Welsh language, the word bach means “small” but this family was enormous and held sway in German musical circles for about two hundred years. Fifty of the Bachs were musicians and at least four of them are still recognized today as influential composers, especially Johann Sebastian Bach considered the greatest of them all. The twentieth century brought more Bees in the form of Berg, Berio, Boulez, Britten, Bliss, Bernstein, Barber and Bartók to name just a handful. Anyway, the other night in the bar, not having much to occupy our minds, I suggested to my companion that we should try to recall as many Bees as we could. After about half an hour we had dredged up about three dozen names but after a couple of glasses of wine it became increasingly difficult. I later discovered that Wikipedia lists over seven hundred Bee composers so our collective feat of memory was not particularly spectacular. However, the vast majority of the names on the Wikipedia list are obscure to say the least. So this week I shall make amends by telling you about the music of two composers whom the other night we completely forgot about.

William Boyce (17111779): Symphony No. 5 in D Major.

Camerata Colonial cond. John Thomas Dodson (Duration: 08:20; Video 480p) Along with Handel, who in 1727 became a naturalized British subject, William Boyce was one of the big names in eighteenth century English music. In 1755 he was appointed Master of the King’s Musick and become one of the organists at the Chapel Royal. Charles Burney, a contemporary of Boyce wrote that Boyce’s Trio Sonatas “were longer and more generally purchased, performed and admired, than any productions of the kind in this kingdom, except those of Corelli.” Boyce’s music was performed everywhere and today the eight symphonies are the most recorded of all his works. The fifth symphony is a good example of the kind of music people heard in British concert halls in the mideighteenth century. These were early days in the development of the symphony as a musical form and the extended symphonies of Haydn and Mozart were yet to come. Boyce’s symphonies, written in a late baroque style were comparatively short. This three-movement work was originally entitled Overture to St. Cecilia and was

intended to precede the composer’s choral work, Ode for St Cecilia’s Day. The Ode was first performed in London in 1739 and in Dublin the following year at the Great Musick Hall. Incidentally, twenty years later Boyce composed the popular march Heart of Oak which to this day remains the official march of the British Royal Navy, the Royal Canadian Navy and the Royal New Zealand Navy.

Boris Blacher (19031975): Variations on a Theme by Paganini. National Orchestra of France cond. Emmanuel Krivine (Duration: 15:44; Video: 1080p HD) If the title of this work sounds familiar it’s hardly surprising. Several dozen composers have written works with the same title notably Brahms, Liszt, Rachmaninoff and Lutoslawski. They’re all based on Caprice No. 24 in A minor written in 1817 by the legendary nineteenth century violinist Niccolò Paganini.

This is a compelling performance of one of Blacher’s most well-known works; though don’t be confused when you hear Ravel’s Piano Concerto during the title sequence. The Variations were written in 1947 and begin with a solo violin playing the opening bars of Paganini’s original before Blacher begins his variations, firstly among the woodwind instruments. It’s written in an approachable style, jaunty and bold and at times there are echoes of Stravinsky. But listen out for the charming little meandering melody (08:22) played by solo woodwind instruments followed by the rich harmonies in the strings (09:18). You might also notice how Blacher uses sudden moments of silence for dramatic effect. It’s witty, lively music with attractive jazzy moments (especially at 13:07 onwards) with colourful and masterful transparent orchestration. The final section requires virtuosic string playing and the work drives relentlessly to an exuberant conclusion. This is the work of a Bee who deserves much greater recognition.

Action is fast-paced in Laird Barron’s ‘Blood Standard’ Bruce Desilva Isaiah Coleridge, muscle for the Chicago mob’s Alaska subsidiary, isn’t your typical Mafia hit man. He’s college educated, frequently alludes to Greek and Roman classics and relishes his underworld moniker — Hercules. Coleridge kills without remorse until two of his bosses invite him on a boat ride and blaze away at a herd of walruses, planning to butcher them for ivory. There, he discovers that his capacity for violence has limits. He chops one wiseguy in the throat, points a gun at the other and flees, turning up at a remote New York farm whose New Age owners take in all manner of lost souls. That’s where the heart of Laird Barron’s tale begins. “Blood Standard” is his first noir crime novel, but he’s no novice, having won the Shirley Jackson Award three times for horror and gothic fantasy.

Coleridge is settling in at the farm when one of its denizens — a teenage girl fresh out of lockup — goes missing. Coleridge doesn’t like her, but nevertheless sets out to track her down. His pursuit soon pits him against white supremacists, a Native American criminal gang, the New York mafia, a team of former mercenaries, corrupt local cops, a bent FBI agent and nearly every modern villain short of Voldemort. Along the way, he is shot, stabbed and bludgeoned beyond the endurance of mere mortals. But Hercules gives worse than he gets, and he cannot be deterred. The action is fast-paced, the characters well drawn, the settings vivid and the hardboiled prose quirky in the manner of a writer who cut his teeth on horror and poetry. Coleridge, son of a special ops officer who got away with killing his wife, muses about his fate: “Only a fool believes he can prevail against what has been bred into blood and bone.” (AP)

‘Jurassic World 2’ leans on nostalgia, contrivances

Lindsey Bahr Los Angeles (AP) - Here’s the good news: “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom “ is more fun than “Jurassic World.” It’s not exactly a high bar, but still a welcome surprise. In the hands of a new director, J.A. Bayona, with Chris Pratt’s high-wattage charisma on full blast and a fair amount of selfaware humor intact, there are certainly worse ways to spend a couple hours in the air-conditioned multiplex this summer. Mind you, this movie is pretty ridiculous and the script (from Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly) is not very clever — I found myself rolling my eyes almost as frequently as I found myself smiling with genuine delight. “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” will not stand up to rigorous scrutiny, and yet,

it’s kind of an enjoyable, preposterous and thrilling ride that ticks through nostalgia beats like a shopping list. It’s a little sad how in this era of industrial franchise filmmaking a three year gap between films actually feels like quite a bit of time — or maybe it’s just a testament to how grueling the past few years have been — but, hey, it did at least seem like the right time to check in with those dinosaurs again, although I worry that our emotional investment in Owen’s connection with a velociraptor has been vastly overestimated. After a very solid, and scary, beginning, with pouring rain and genuine suspense as some scientists venture back into the defunct Jurassic World to retrieve a dinosaur bone, a helpful newscaster orients the audience with a whole lot of exposition: It’s been three years since Jurassic World closed; $800 million in damages have been paid out; and, most importantly, a dormant volcano has come back to life on the island and

This image released by Universal Pictures shows a scene from “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.” (Universal Pictures via AP) is about to cause an “extinction level event” that will wipe out all the remaining dinosaurs. The question of whether or not to let the dinos go extinct again has become a national debate and Bryce Dallas Howard’s Claire is leading the charge to try to save the animals. As a notso-subtle nod to that other

national debate about Claire’s choice of footwear in “Jurassic World,” our first shot of her is her feet in sky high heels (the hiking boots she wears later for all the action get their own loving close-up too). Essentially, and this is where the contrivances start, a wealthy, dying man,

Madison, Wis. (AP) - The family of late comedian and film star Chris Farley has filed a federal lawsuit against Trek Bicycle for naming its fat-tired bikes Farley, saying the Wisconsin-based bike company misappropriated Farley’s name and traded on his “fat guy” brand of comedy. Chris Farley was born and raised in Madison, about 30 miles from Waterloo, where Trek is based. Make Him Smile, a company founded and run by Farley’s

family to protect his publicity and property rights, said damages could exceed $10 million. Trek said any damages sought were purely speculative. Farley graduated from high school in Madison and Marquette University in Milwaukee before going on to star on Saturday Night Live and in several hit movies, including “Tommy Boy” and “Black Sheep.” He weighed about 400 pounds (180 kilograms),

the lawsuit states, having “spent his entire career building, then capitalizing on, his unique brand of ‘fat guy’ humor and acting style.” The lawsuit alleges Trek chose the name Farley “to immediately associate defendant Trek’s fat bikes with one of their favorite ‘fat’ and ‘loud’ comedians,” and the company’s executives knew what they were doing when they made the decision.

Iconic cinema Lido shutters after 50 years

This undated photo shows the Lido Multiplex in the Siam Square area of Bangkok during the cinema’s heyday. Bangkok - Thailand’s longest operating independent theater, Lido Multiplex, has finally closed after 50 years with the conclusion of its tenancy contract. The iconic cinema held a night of remembrance on May 31 to mark its closure, looking back on over 50

years of operation in the Siam Square area of Bangkok. The cinema’s plot is to be returned to the Chulalongkorn University Property Office. The final day of the multiplex saw a steady stream of visitors, many of whom sat for a screening of “Kids on the Slope”, the last film to be

Benjamin Lockwood (James Cromwell), who is somehow connected to John Hammond, and his associate Eli Mills (Rafe Spall) pitch Claire on an expedition to stage their own Noah’s Ark with the dinos and transport as many species as possible to a sanctuary island. They need her to tap into the park’s security system, and also to convince Owen (Pratt) to come along and get close to the raptor Blue, his old pal who has become so anthropomorphized it’s actually surprising she doesn’t just start talking. There are some more new characters added too: A skittish computer guy, Franklin (Justice Smith), and a doctor Zia (Daniella Pineda), who come along on the journey for some comedic relief;

a mercenary military guy (Ted Levine); and a cute dino-obsessed girl, Masie Lockwood (Isabella Sermon). Perhaps the most unexpected thing about “Fallen Kingdom” is that the “escape from the volcano” plot is just the first set-piece. It’s all a precursor to the dinos coming to the mainland. If you’re thinking, “I’ve seen this movie before,” just wait, it get so much more derivative than you would ever imagine possible. Bayona, who also directed “The Impossible” and “A Monster Calls,” is good enough to pull it off. It’s the main reason why “Fallen Kingdom” is entertaining despite itself, but it is a shameless strategy that can only work so many times. Also, can we retire the “objects in the mirror are closer than they appear” joke at this point? Life finds a way, and so do franchises that make ungodly amounts of money. “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” gets away with its unoriginality for the most part, but this franchise’s desperation is starting to show. It’s time to evolve or go extinct. “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” a Universal Pictures release, is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “for intense sequences of science-fiction violence and peril.” Running time: 128 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four.

AC/DC: ‘Razors Edge’ mott@pattayamail.com By the beginning of the Eighties AC/DC were probably the biggest rock band in the world, or as they preferred to be called, “A little rock & roll band, nothing more, nothing less.” Sadly, nothing is certain in life and things easily change. The decade proved not to be a good one for AC/DC and four sub-standard albums that had been panned by critics saw the record buying public all but desert them. They were still a massive attraction on the live market but there the crowds wanted the old hits, not the more recent tracks from the latest albums. As the Nineties dawned however it was time for a new album release, and a change in the lineup also as drummer Steve Wright left for Dio, his place being filled by Chris Slade. There were several other notable changes too. Mike Fraser was brought in as the sound engineer and Chris Fairbairn as producer,

the latter having previously worked with both Aerosmith and Bon Jovi. The band recorded this album in Ireland and Canada but lead singer Brian Johnson, who had seemed a little off his game since “For Those About To Rock” in 1981, was not available for the first few months of recording as he was dealing with a messy divorce. So the decision was taken to write the songs without him and Malcolm and Angus Young wrote the

lyrics, something that Johnson later revealed he was relieved about. The Young brothers in the future carried on writing all the songs, allowing Johnson to concentrate on his singing. The results in the songwriting change were unquestionably for the better. It got AC/DC, if not quite back firing on all six cylinders, at least up and running again. Brian Johnson seemed

to have benefited the most, with his voice having the charisma of old again. The guitar play of the Young brothers was back to its best and the new rhythm section worked perfectly. There are some classic songs on “Razors Edge” which became firm favorites with the live crowds, allowing AC/DC to spice up their live set. Album opener (and also concert opener for more than a decade) is the AC/DC classic “Thunderstruck” and is still included in the band’s set today. With it’s opening Angus Young guitar riff, the

crowd chanting and Johnson telling the audience they had been “Thunderstruck” while leering at them, it was a sure fire hit. The opening track on the album is followed by a trio of storming rockers right out of the AC/DC cannon; “Fire Your Guns”, “Money Talks” (which was released with a fabulous video that had heavy rotation on MTV), and the title cut “Razors Edge”. From here on however it sadly all rather fades away. Quite simply two of the songs, “Mistress For Christmas” and “Shot Of Love” are plain awful, whilst the others

Brian Johnson. all sound a bit like a version of AC/DC just going through the motions. But never mind, the album did its trick and went to number two in the American Billboard Charts and sold 5 million copies in America alone, whilst in the UK it went to number four. AC/DC were definitely back. Why they missed out the apostrophe in the title however is unfathomable and has not been put right to this day. Three and a half stars out of five. Living statues festival wows Romania’s capital Vadim Ghirda Bucharest (AP) — Wait, did that statue really move? It may have been the question many people asked while taking a walk in Bucharest last month during the International Living Statues Festival. Artists from eight countries embodied 64 statues in the old quarter of the Romanian capital, in popular parks and in the garden of the spectacular Filipescu-Cesianu residence, built in 1892 in the Belle Epoque period. Actors of the Romanian Masca Theatre, the festival’s organizer, brought to life Parisian street vendors from the 17th and 18th centuries in performances seen by an estimated 30,000 people.

How to avoid madness in Pattaya (or not)

MC Roy Albiston provides the PCEC’s Certificate of Appreciation to Jonathan Finch. The Pattaya City Expats Club was honored to have two speakers during a recent Sunday Morning Meeting. The first speaker, Jonathan Finch, spoke about his latest novel, “How to Avoid Madness in Pattaya (or not)”. Jonathan Finch, author, teacher and lector, has published almost a dozen books

in the last few years, including prize-winning poems. He was born in London to an Irish mother and a first-generation father from England (grandparents are from Austria and Poland). He has lived in Italy and worked at the University of Rome as a lector. He states, “He found Thailand, and it found him, and he has stayed in Thailand ever since.” His review of the novel “How to Avoid Madness in Pattaya, (or not)”, begins with a disclaimer: “I am no expert on madness.” However, he goes into some length describing his understanding of madness and society’s belief in the mad. Jonathan After the main presentation, Insurance broker Chamnong (Neng) Anusat-utai spoke about changes that have taken place which impact the PCEC’s group health insurance policy and mentioned some alternatives that members may be interested in exploring.

cites the major forms of madness, like paranoia, schizophrenia and other forms, such as personality disorders. He points out that anyone who cannot listen and hold a conversation is crazy. He questions society’s understanding of madness and talks about the views of noted psychiatrist R. D. Laing, a Scottish psychiatrist who wrote extensively on mental illness and that symptoms of mental illness may just be a description of lived experience. He also cited Erasmus and Burton, two critics of vanity in people, and mentioned that Pattaya is full of people in love with themselves (vain, boastful people).

his friend, “The King”, to continue writing but he gets sick and yet another writernarrator is summoned from the UK. A “criminal cook” accompanied by a social worker continues stimulating Frank’s libido, but his intentions are thwarted because the social worker, “after touring the bars and staring into the glitzy face of sexual depravity, decides to close down Pattaya”. So, the book evolved into a collection of e-mails that outlined the life in Pattaya, which served the purpose and is quite entertaining. Jonathan provided a couple of examples of his collection. He then invited member Ren Lexander to better demonstrate the threads within the e-mails.

Member Ren Lexander interviews Jonathan Finch after his presentation to the PCEC. To view the video, visit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v =34T9eznOfQc&feature=youtu.be. Jonathan talked about the fact that Thailand has very strict laws concerning the use of drugs and issues very severe punishments against offenders. However, he talks about three intoxicants or drugs that are much more harmful, yet legal, that cause devastation. Those substances are alcohol, an obviously intoxicating liquid, tobacco, a low-cost product popular in Thailand, and then there is sugar, probably the number-one killer over the long term. He also talks about driving in Thailand and how crazy it is to travel on the roadways. In reference to his book, “How to Avoid Madness in Pattaya, (or not)”, his approach deals with the madness of having unlimited sex with an unlimited number of people. In an earlier novel, titled, “DEAR PATTAYA!!! A Novel of Sexy Letters and Sexy Dreams (For Frank)” that Jonathan wrote for his Austrian friend, Frank. The purpose was to entice his friend to come back to “Fun City” and depicts Pattaya as a place full of fun, with bargirls, sensational sex, and more. But, at a certain point the author runs out of steam. He commissions

Some of the e-mails deal with the gullible relationships between the farang and the bar-girls. The humorous exchanges between an obviously deluded man and his desire for sympathy is explored. Advice is offered and the life in Pattaya is explained. One of the primary ways of avoiding madness in Pattaya, in Jonathan’s opinion, is to practice moderation and the choice of a life-style with one woman or partner. He advocates that cardinal virtues are correct and that those virtues include humility, kindness, abstinence, chastity, patience, liberality, and diligence. He asked the audience to consider the seven deadly sins or classification of vices within Christian teachings, which he quotes from the Bible (Ecclesiastes): pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and sloth. After the presentation, MC Roy Albiston brought everyone up to date on upcoming events which was followed by the Open Forum where members and guests can ask questions or make comments about Expat living in Thailand. Father Ray Foundation celebrates ‘cutest’ graduation ceremony

Comparing graduating caps.

Just wants ceremony to be over.

Derek Franklin

Father Peter presented certificates, a gift and cash to the graduates.

Friends off to the same school.

With so many children and students with disabilities living and being educated at the Father Ray Foundation, throughout the year there are many graduation ceremonies to attend. Children who live at the Children’s Home or Children’s Village leaving Grade 6 to go to high school, those leaving grade 9 and going off to vocational training and those who have completed Grade 12 all have graduation ceremonies.

Graduating and ready for the next step.

This year three older residents will be attending their university ceremonies and in December more than sixty young adults living with a disability will attend their own graduation celebrations. But the cutest ceremony of the year, if a graduation ceremony can be called cute, is the one that takes place at the Father Ray Day Care Center. The Center takes care of some of the poorest children in Pattaya, and prepares them for when they reach the age to enter kindergarden. Of all the projects managed by the Father Ray Foundation, the Day Care Center is the only one that charges a fee, twenty baht per day, or 10 baht if they can’t afford twenty. The Center provides breakfast when the children arrive, as well as lunch, snacks, three uniforms, a basic education and a nurse check-up once a month; there is also a lady who each day squeezes oranges to ensure the children receive a daily dose of vitamin C. When the children arrived at their graduation ceremony, all wearing the uniforms of their new kindergarden, they were welcomed by Father Peter, President of the Foundation. Not only did he present the graduation certificates and a small gift, but he also

Only another three years of kindergarten and twelve of schooling until it’s all over.

presented each child with an envelope containing cash. The cash is a percentage from all the twenty bahts they have paid in each day and is used to cover the cost of purchasing the new uniforms. From the Day Care Center the children will spend three

years in kindergarden before entering mainstream education for at least a further nine years, but while one group of toddlers left us another group arrived the same day. More information can be found at www.fr-ray.org or email info@fr-ray.org

Even former attendees came back for the ceremony, and to cheer their siblings.

Looking very smart.

New arrivals at the Day Care Center.

Fireworks festival makes colorful return to Pattaya

Pod from Moderndog had the crowd up and dancing with the song ‘Busaba’.

Jetsada Homklin

Low season looked like high season during the weekend event.

The 25 Hour band rocked the crowd with some of their major hits including ‘Tam Dai Piang’ and ‘Mod Wayla’.

The International Fireworks Festival returned to Pattaya Beach with a bang and a flash, drawing ooohs and aaahs from a big lowseason tourist crowd. Chonburi Gov. Pakarathorn Thienchai kicked off the June 8-9 spectacular with top local officials at the Central Road intersection. Canceled in 2016 due to the royal mourning period and in 2017 after the Interior Ministry nixed its budget, the popular event was moved to June to power-up low season, a scheduling move that appeared to work. Beach Road, closed to traffic from 3 p.m. to midnight both Friday and Saturday was jammed with couples, families and fireworks fans, many of whom brought along mats to stake out a place on the beach. Of course, with Pattaya’s main north to south artery closed, traffic became a

nightmare for anyone not on foot. Friday night featured 45minute performances from Italy and Brazil, with Thai pop bands Playground and Big Ass filling in the entertainment gaps. Saturday’s finale drew an even larger crowd, with little room to walk around the main stage where Modern Dog and 25 Hours pumped up the volume. Despite sporadic raindrops, people packed the sand to watch the United Kingdom and Sweden put on their best pyrotechnics. With all of Beach Road closed, the shoreline took on a true festival feel, with booths offering freshly cooked meals and beverages. Pattaya regulatory officers had their hands full, however, rounding up unlicensed vendors selling alcohol, an effort also aimed at placating festival sponsor Leo beer. Over the two days five sellers were charged.

Pattaya Beach was jammed with couples, families and fireworks fans, many of whom brought along mats to stake out a place to sit and watch.

Music fans had a great time in general as the stage activities continued till late.

An unbiased view of a Tesla

Chinese EV startup moves into Indiana plant A Chinese electric vehicle startup announced Wednesday that it is retooling an Indiana factory and hopes to conduct trial runs for two new lines of vehicles by the end of the year. State officials say SF Motors, a Silicon Valley-based subsidiary of China’s Chongqing Sokon Industry Group, plans to hire back some workers who were laid off when AM General halted operations at its Mishawaka plant last year. The company says it will spend $160 million to buy, renovate and retool the factory, which will serve as the company’s main U.S. manufacturing plant. It plans to employ up to 467 workers. To secure the deal, the state of Indiana is offering

What did we learn from the Canadian GP? The Canadian Grand Prix (French: Grand Prix du Canada) is the annual motor sport circus held in Canada since 1961. It has been part of the Formula One World Championship since 1967. It was first staged at Mosport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario as a sports car event, before alternating between

Mosport and Circuit Mont-Tremblant, Quebec after Formula One took over the event. After 1971, safety concerns led to the Grand Prix moving permanently to Mosport. In 1978, after similar safety concerns with Mosport, the Canadian Grand Prix moved to its current home on Notre Dame Island in Montreal.

That is the history, but what was the situation this year? Not another bore-fest! Yes, another one. However at least Lance Stroll (Williams) livened up the first lap by crashing into another car. I suggest Daddy Stroll pays Williams F1 by the number of laps son Lance manages as this will keep expenses down. The other piece of excitement was the dolly girl whose job it was to look glam and wave the checkered flag at the end, forgetting what lap it was (or perhaps ran out of fingers) and waved the flag a lap too soon. And as this was Canada they even managed to get a sacrificial groundhog to commit hogicide on Romain Grosjean (Haas). Liberty Media is doing a great job of providing ‘entertainment’. Pity the racing is so poor. In the procession itself (sorry ‘race’) Vettel (Ferrari) just ran away and hid. The gap between him and Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) who finished in second, was managed by Vettel, who was not at all likely to lose that Number 1. And the finger made its presence again at the end.

A friend in Australia just sent me this first hand report on a Tesla. “My work doctor just took me for a spin last night at the end of my shift. This he had just bought in Sydney, a 2014 Tesla PD for AUD 104,000. “Performance figures include 0-100 in 2.8 seconds, 2WD model, 4WD a little quicker. Forget Super Cars, this is head snapping. “If you haven’t been in one, take a spare pair of undies. “Has all gauges concerning

Third was Verstappen (Red Bull) who was also unable to pass, just running in the high speed procession. However, he didn’t hit anything which is a great step forward for the young Dutchman. Next car was his team mate, the Monaco Meister Daniel Ricciardo who actually passed fifth placed Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) – but in the pits, not on the track. Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari) was another who found it impossible to pass and in reality just toured around. Last point scorer was Charles Leclerc in the Sauber, who has impressed everyone in this his rookie season. Punching well above his weight and will be driving for Ferrari 2020. (You read it here first.) Drivers and managers are already looking at who should go where in 2019/20. Here are some possibilities: Ricciardo to Mercedes, Bottas to Ferrari, Grosjean to his kitchen and another recipe book, Sirotkin to Haas, Alonso to America, Hulkenberg to the USA and

Indy and Raikkonen to Renault. All those transfers are quite on the cards. However, back to F1 reality 2018, the downhill trend will continue while Liberty Media continues to push the ‘entertainment wheel barrow. There are plenty of entertainments out there. There is only one F1. One of the F1 websites reports David Coulthard believing that Lewis Hamilton could decide to walk away from the sport after the 2020 season. Coulthard suggests Hamilton will quit F1 and concentrate on a music career. “I think it has got to be on his mind,” Coulthard said. “I think that he will go to 2020 which is [the end of] the current Concorde Agreement.” “I think beyond 2020 there

Lewis Hamilton the F1 Rapper. is every likelihood he may well be releasing his first [music] album which he has

been working on,” the Scot continued. Many commentators have voiced the opinion that Hamilton should make up his mind as to whether he is an F1 driver or a rapper, complete with gold chains and tattoos. We might have to wait until 2020 to see if we all have to wear our hats back to front! I am told by a reliable source that you can still buy baseball hats with the bill at the front.

The first significant all-electric vehicle This significant vehicle was electric and the world speed record holder. La Jamais Contente (never happy) had two direct drive Postel-Vinay 25 kW motors, running at 200 V drawing 124 Amperes each. This fine beast was driven by a Belgian, Count Camille Jenatzy. In 1899, to break 100 km/h was breathtaking, but there was much more to it. An old adage goes that motor racing was invented when we built the second car, and this could easily be applied to Count Jenatzy and Count Chasseloup-Laubat. Fierce rivalry ensued, with the objective being the first person on the planet to crack 100 km/h. While we regularly beat their times on the way to the supermarket, in those days, pre-1900, it was not known what effects this would have on the human body. Nobody had gone so fast before! Bystanders thought that it was likely that one could lose its sight and the body fluids could harden themselves and thus the organs could explode. Other ones were totally convinced that God would send out thunder and lightning to those who dare to challenge him in this way. Fortunately for us, and the two counts, that theory was wrong and nothing happened, even so the two characters involved of who will be the fastest man became afraid of their achievements and decided to not continue with their speed fight after the magic

La Jamais Contente. 100 km/h was reached. On the way to 100 clicks, in 1895 the Frenchman Charles Jeantaud participated in the Paris-Bordeau-Paris race steering his electric car. In order to not lose time with battery recharge he was accompanied by a team that transported several fully charged batteries as he had to change them 14 times. Back came Jenatzy. His racing car had two motors; one in every axle box of the front wheels of 25 kW each one, which directly connected with the wheels without any intermediate parts. In the first tests the Belgian went with such a speed that the person responsible for time measuring forgot to start the chronometer, and we will never know at what speed he went. On the second attempt everything had been officially controlled and checked: Jenatzy had reached the 105.85 km/h, a real record, a real fright and a real challenge. It took the world 36 months to break this record.

The next milestone to be passed by the EV group was ‘range’, a fear still in many consumer’s mind. In July 1899 Count ChasseloupLaubat drove 140 km without recharging the batteries. A year later, Louis Krièger increased this figure to 170 kilometers with a car of his own brand. In 1900 the French BGS reached the 262 kilometers without any need of recharge. A year later, Louis Krièger increased the limit to 307 kilometers. These are figures some EV’s cannot equal today! Count Jenatzy came to an inglorious end, being shot by his friend while hunting in the Ardennes forest. La Jamais Contente also looked to have an inglorious end too, as it had been allowed to deteriorate in the Compiegne Museum. However, fortunately a Belgian, Count Xavier Van der Stappen, generated funding for the building of a replica. This replica is currently in the Belgian “Autoworld” Museum. According to Van der Stappen who managed the re-creation, it has been reconstructed based on plans provided by an engineer from the unrestored original car.

Autotrivia Quiz Last week I asked you to study the picture. This vehicle was built in 1888. However, its technology is up to the minute in many ways. I asked, who built it? It was the Flocken Elektrowagen with the pic from Franz Haag. So to this week. Both Genevieve and the Spyker were deemed ineligible for the London to Brighton run. Why? Ritchie back on form at Phoenix PSC Golf from The Billabong Bar Monday, June 4, Phoenix Gold Stableford We played Phoenix Lakes and Ocean from very forward tees today, but still a challenge. The course was in fantastic condition as it prepares for the ELGA tournament and the Queens Cup so the rough was rough and the pin placements were either very forward or very back. Two of our Aussie visitors acquitted themselves well with Steve Rawlings getting beaten in a three-way count back all on 39 points, out of 18 players there were only 3 that didn’t make 30 plus points. Taking third spot with 39 points as stated prior on a

count back was Thiery Temime, second went to Gerard Lambert with 40 points and the winner was Greig Ritchie with his best round in a long time, scoring a great 42 points. There was only one ‘2’, coming from Peter Seil.

Wednesday, June 6, Treasure Hill/ Phoenix Gold – Stabledford Today the sun gods smiled sweetly on those from the Billabong and the day was perfect for golf. A 4-day competition at Green Valley demanded alternative arrangements so the male members of the Billabong played at Treasure Hill which was in good condition but the greens were a bit two

paced, very slow uphill and very quick downhill. 42 players started the day but, somehow we lost one on the way, for only 41 finished. Thiery Petrement needed a countback to occupy fourth place, his 33 points not helped by having only 2 points on three consecutive holes starting at No. 7. Adam Farrell also struggled on the last 2 holes for 35 points but regular visitor to these shores, Bob Scott, had 2 blobs on the back nine which did not help his cause finishing second on 36. The Billabong’s own Hercule Poirot, Gerard Lambert, had 21 points on the front nine and 17 on the return for a winning 38 points. Three ‘2’s came from Lloyd Shuttleworth, Gerard

with 10 pars and 1 birdie for 21 points on the last 9 holes.

Friday, June 8, Burapha – Stableford

1st Neil Wilkinson (14) 40pts 2nd Ho Jun-Yoon (25) 39pts 3rd Darren Stanton (14) 38pts We started the week with twenty three players taking on Silky Oak and even though a lot of the greens are far from perfect and often required a driver to putt the ball to the hole, some very respectable scores were posted. Neil Wilkinson, a consummate gentleman and one of the TRGG’s most consistent golfers, wasn’t intimidated by the greens and “slam dunked” putts from everywhere to take first place with an unassailable 40 points.

Division 1 1st Freddy Starbeck (13) 41pts 2nd Colin Smith (14) 37pts 3rd Christian Boysen (8) 36pts Division 2 1st Mick McHale (16) 32pts 2nd Bob Cannon (22) 31pts 3rd Norman Cheetham (16) 31pts Twenty eight players were competing today and with perfect weather conditions and A & B courses beckoning you couldn’t ask for more. Mighty Mick McHale was on the first tee passing his hip flask around, imparting his knowledge of the great game and obviously enjoying his new found fame. Of the fourteen players in his division the best score was 32 points and unbelievably it was the Mighty Mick who scored them! He was last seen heading up the 7 towards the airport. In division one it was a completely different story. Freddy Starbeck, a seasoned drinker but not one to take advice from Mick, smashed his way around the course. The Viking proved he is a force to be reckoned with, posting a score of 41 points and now sits fifth on the Order of Merit and with a real chance to take out the top award.

Tuesday, June 5, Treasure Hill – Stableford 1st Kim Sang-Kyu (22) 35pts 2nd Sakai Yasuo (10) 33pts 3rd Chun Yong-Park (30) 31pts Treasure Hills is in magnificent condition and is a course that commands respect. Your second shot on the opening hole with its narrow neck into the green and with water left, water right is a precursor of what to expect. Not one player shot their handicap today; however Kim Sang-Kyu applied good course management and came close with 35 points which was enough to claim the coveted first place.

Wednesday, June 6, Bangpra – Stableford 1 Daryl Ottaway (7) 38pts 2nd Graeme Heaply (26) 36pts 3rd Daryl Harvey (31) 35pts I don’t know what it is about left handed golfers but they all seem to have a natural easy swing and today’s winner is no exception. Our resident “lefty” Daryl Ottaway has a swing to st

Neil Wilkinson. die for, seemingly effortless but he consistently hits the ball long and accurate. Today he set up the win with twenty points on the front nine and came home with a very steady eighteen points to leave us other monkeys in his wake.

Thursday, June 7, Phoenix – Stableford 1st Mick McHale (19) 44pts 2nd Daryl Harvey (31) 43pts 3rd Gary Bennett (18) 38pts Phoenix and it was the Mighty Mick McHale who casually took the Lakes and Ocean courses apart. Strolling around the course puffing away on his 12 inch Cuban cigars and regularly quenching his thirst with a litre hip flask of vodka, Mick was out to prove that you need to be in a relaxed, semi comatose state to be able to master the ancient game of golf and prove it he did. Hitting almost two thirds of the greens in regulation Mick posted his personal best of 44 points to not only win the day but also record the best TRGG score of the week.

Saturday, June 9, Pattavia – Stableford 1st Mr. Petur (6) 36pts 2nd Colin Smith (14) 35pts 3rd Pat Feeney (24) 34pts We finished the week with a pleasant drive through the pineapple fields to Pattavia, Mr. Petur negotiated the lightening greens better than the rest of the field to play to his six-handicap and finish the day with a very solid 36 points.

Na having 9 pars but not quite making the podium in fourth while Miss Sasicha ran out of steam on the back nine 7 points lower. In second Miss Am had four 1pointers on the way home which took the shine off her score of 40 points, losing on a countback to Miss May who had a remarkable day

We had 5 groups playing Burapha A and B loops today and the course was in great condition, so with carts on the fairways no winter rules were applied and it was play it as it lies. The scores were great considering the elements with a count back for the minor places between Sasicha and Lloyd Shuttleworth, both on 37 points, with Lloyd getting relegated to fourth and Sasicha taking third spot. It was the same at the top with Bob Scott taking second and the lovely May getting the big prize after both returned 40 points overall. T h e r e w e r e f o u r ‘ 2 ’s , coming from Miss Sasicha, Sandy Chapo, Helmut and Lloyd Shuttleworth.

Frost steals the glory with eagle 2 The Tara Court Golf Society Sunday, June 3, Green Valley – Stableford A Flight 1st Stuart Brown (8) 35pts 2nd Tom Shea (5) 34pts 3rd Craig Hitchens (13) 33pts B Flight 1st Russell Gilroy (17) 33pts 2nd Ian Corica (27) 33pts 3rd Paula Koptaz (22) 32pts We had our largest field for some time today and with 19 players we decided on 2 divisions. The golf course is in excellent condition at the moment and a pleasure to play. It was hot & humid to begin and late in the round a large thunderstorm beckoned but thankfully we all finished without getting wet. The scoring did not reflect the condition of the course, with no one breaking their handicap. In A Division (516 h/cap), Stuart Brown (8) won with 35 points, one ahead of Tom Shea (5) in second place. Third spot was decided on a three-way countback with Craig Hitchens (13) getting the edge over Kevyn Wright & Michael Healy. B Division was won on a countback on 33 points with Russell Gilroy (17) beating Ian Corica 13-12 on the

inward nine. Third place went to Paula Koppatz (22) with 32 points. There were three 2’s today, Kevyn Wright & Michael Healy both getting one each on the same hole while the other ‘2’ was the story of the day. Murray Frost thought he had lost his ball on the par-4, 2nd hole but it was found down near the 3rd tee block after running all the way down the cart path. He then proceeded to knock his second shot into the hole for an eagle 2. Well done Murray!

Tuesday, June 5, Mt. Shadow – Stableford A small group of 8 players today to play one of our favorite courses which was in excellent condition from tee to green but a few greens had some sandy repaired areas. As the course was nearly empty we flew around in under 4 hours. Once again no one played to handicap and it required a countback to determine the top places with Donal McGuigan(18) beating Joe McArdle (18) for the win, both with 35 points overall. Third place went to Ted Morris (20) with 34 points. Tom Shea & Billy Major shared the 2’s.

Truelove takes the treasure PSC Golf from The Pattaya Links Golf Society Monday, June 4, Treasure Hill Stableford 1st Steve Truelove (10) 38pts 2nd Colin Service (19) 35pts 3rd Petr Petursen (6) 32pts 4th Derek Phillips (20) 29pts Now is the “low” of Low season, but we still managed to have a very respectable field of sixteen golfers to tackle this tricky course. So many of the reports from Golf Societies heap praise on the presentation and condition of this course, and with good reason. Okay, because of the rain about the area recently, the fairways were a little soft, and the rough a little longer than usual, but carts were still allowed on the course. The caddies were cautious as to where they drove so as to not damage the course, well done to them and Management. Quick word on the greens: As usual, very good condition and no excuses for not putting well. Big hitting Steve Truelove was the only one to play to handicap or better with a well compiled 38 points. This is not a surprise, as his form in the past couple of months, apart from a blip at his last start at TH, has been excellent. Currently in-form Colin Service was there again to take second spot with a fine 35 points, keeping his very good run going, while single figure handicapper, Petr Petursen took third spot with 32 points

Colin Service (right) with Phil Davies. Derek Phillips rounded out the podium in fourth with 29 points on a countback. The rest fell away to show a field average of just 27 points. Next outing, a new day… Tip Briney and John Anderson were calculating who would win the “wig”, on countback only to be thrown out of contention by someone we didn’t expect. So it came as a shock to John when he was awarded Best Back Nine for non-winners with 16 points. Let’s not mention his first nine! Livio Marrone had the Best Front Nine with 17 points. Surprisingly, no-one managed to get on the green on the quite short 17th but elsewhere near pins were won by Steve Truelove (2 and 13), and Colin Service (6).

Wednesday, June 6, St. Andrews 2000 Stableford 1st Colin Service (19) 39pts 2nd Steve Truelove (10) 37pts 3rd Nigel Harrison (20) 34pts 4th Phil Davies (12) 33pts Colin Service is in red hot form at the moment, and today wore the Green Jacket yet again. He says he made a couple of “small” tweaks to his game and is reaping the benefits. In 11 starts since May 9, he has had 4 wins, 3 seconds, 2 thirds and one fourth. St. Andrews is one of the more expensive courses in the area and, because golf societies need to cater to all players this course is not on the roster very often. However, we were able to take advantage of their Sports Day Wednesday at the very

good price of 2050 baht all in (carts are compulsory). Not cheap, but a chance for a once a year treat. Nineteen excited players arrived at the course, checked in and ready to go. But, what a disappointment to find many greens had recently been scarified and sanded so, consequently, not the usual good greens here. Putting became difficult. Fairways are in good condition, and the weather, although humid for most of the distance, did not produce any rain. We’ve talked about Colin Service and his great form and with 39 points stole the show. Two days previously it was Colin and Steve Truelove in a one two. Same again today, but in reverse, Steve in second place with another good score of 37 points. What might have been though, as Steve became ill during the last two holes, but toughed it out. Nigel Harrison had an off day at Treasure Hill, but bounced back to take third here with 34 points, while Phil Davies in his first outing since his trip to Wales came up with 33 points for the remaining spot. Mike Jeffreys had the Best Front Nine from non-winners with 20 points and Tommy Marshall had the best inward half with 19. Near pins went to Colin Service, Gerry Conway and Ralph McConnell.

Takeshi gets the gong PSC Golf from The Bunker Boys score with which most times one would expect to win. Jimmy Carr took third with thirty-four points. Near pins went to Geoff Parker, Alan Sullivan, Neil Carter, and Tony Robbins.

Monday, June 4, Khao Kheow – Stableford 1st Neil Carter (13) 38pts 2nd Jimmy Carr (18) 34pts 3rd Steve Durey (23) 32pts Today’s round was played at the always popular Khao Kheow course, which was in its usual fine condition apart from the tee boxes which were a bit ragged and in need of mowing. Due to recent heavy rain and the fact the yellow tees had been pushed back quite a bit the course played long today, otherwise conditions were perfect for golf with moderate temperatures and no wind. Neil Carter took the honors with an excellent thirty-eight points and had the complete game today; he drove the ball straight and long, approaches to the green were accurate and the putts went down. Four points adrift Jimmy Carr took second place while third place was filled by Steve Durey on countback from Michael Brett, both with thirty-two. Near pins went to Jimmy Carr, Steve Durey, and two to Michael Brett.

Wednesday, June 6, Pattavia – Stableford 1st Alan Sullivan (15) 44pts 2nd Neil Carter (13) 37pts 3rd Jimmy Carr (17) 34pts

Friday, June 8, Crystal Bay – Medal

Takeshi Hakozaki. A baker ’s dozen fronted up for today’s round at Pattavia where the weather was pleasant with blue skies, wispy white clouds, and moderate temperatures. The course was in good shape as usual. Alan Sullivanm, who has been in great form lately, stormed home in first place with a remarkable score of fortyfour points off a fifteen handicap. This was golf at its best and in particular his short game was flawless. A full seven strokes back in second place was Neil Carter on thirty-seven, a

1st Takeshi Hakozaki (13) net 65 2nd Roger Touhy (13) net 69 3rd Neil Carter (13) net 70 4th Steve Durey (21) net 70 Another thirteen players fronted up for the first medal round of the month at Crystal Bay. The fairways had just been mowed and were in fantastic condition. The greens were also in good shape but as usual, the C nine were a bit slower than the B nine. Light rain fell for a brief period but this time without the usual thunder and lightning so, fortunately, there was no interruption to play and the round was completed in about three and a half hours which was excellent. Some very good scores were returned none more so than that by Takeshi Hakozaki who had a magnificent net sixty-five on his home course. Second place went to Roger Touhy with a net sixty-nine, while Neil Carter edged out Steve Durey for third place. Near pins went to Roger Touhy and two to Michael Brett.

Devereux on fire at Plutaluang PSC Golf from Siam Country Resort Pattaya

(From left) Patrick Devereux, Willem Lasonder, Dave Smith and Jonathan Pratt.

Tuesday, June 5, King’s Naga – Stableford On we went to King’s Naga which normally is a course in a reasonable condition, but today it was disappointing. Perhaps you cannot complain too much looking at the price, but we still expect better. We couldn’t make any high scores but Jonathan Pratt recorded 34 points for the win. Second went to Dave Smith with 30 while the near pins were claimed by Stan Rees and Jonathan Pratt.

Thursday, June 7, Plutaluang - Stableford Plutaluang was our venue on Thursday and we were pleasantly surprised by the return of Daniel Oshiro after an injury. Good to have him back in the group. We played the North and West course which was in excellent condition and the greens were really very good. We had nice weather with sun, half clouds and a cool breeze, conditions for good scores. One of us had wings today and Patrick Devereux played an outstanding round for 43 points. In second was Willem Lasonder with 34 points, beating Daniel Oshiro on the countback. The near pins went to Dave Smith and Jonathan Pratt.

Carmody wins on countback PSC Golf from Tropical Golf Group

Don Carmody (right) with Dick Warberg.

Tuesday, June 5, Greenwood Stableford The test for the day was to be the A & C nines, quite a tough test and throw into this the possibility of rain for the day we knew we were in for a testing time as we stood on the first tee. We went straight into ‘lift, clean and place’ not that the course looked bad but because the grass was a little

longer and with the weather forecast for rain we expected things to get a little dicey later on, and in fact so it proved. It did rain and we did get really wet. Thankfully we had the covers on the bag and skin is kind of waterproof, but it was not pleasant. We were back very early to Pattaya so the results were quickly over and time to relax. The winner on the day was Don Carmody with 40 points on countback over Dick

Piano hits the right notes at Green Valley

Tom Herrington (right) with Alan Sullivan. Warberg in second. In third was Brian Parish with 39 points on countback over Tommy Marshall in fourth. It may be noted that the first four were all within 1 point. Well played all. We had 2 long puts at the last hole and the winner of the A Flight was Mashi Kaneta and winner of the B Flight was Don Carmody.

Friday, June 8, Pleasant Valley – Stableford This day eleven Tropical Golfers made a visit to Pleasant Valley. When we arrived we were reminded that on Fridays the caddies can wear what they want, and many opt for the Korean LPGA style. Nice variety. Sadly PV is not in the best

condition right now, greens are patchy and fairways not kept up. “Fair” would be an accurate if slightly generous condition rating, however there was plenty of evidence of work being done on the course, so stay tuned. PV is a slightly tough course with more OB stakes than one ever wants to see but a short 10 minute rain delay gave everyone a rest and time to regroup. After a long hiatus Tom Herrington (c/h 16) found his groove and smashed the field with his 41 points – a full 20 shots better than his previous golf outing. Next Alan Sullivan (16) had a most excellent 36 points, followed by Traveling Man Brian Gabe (19) with 34 and Barry Elphick (28) with a respectable 33.

Arpichaya ‘Piano’ Yubol poses with the Thai LPGA trophy at Rayong Green Valley. (Photo/Thai LPGA)

Richard Talbot The 5th leg of the Thai LPGA Thailand Championship took place at Green Valley golf course near Rayong from June 6-8. The competition, which took place over 54 holes, saw the winner Arpichaya Yubol take the title after recording a remarkable last round of 10 under par. The 16-year old, who is commonly known as “Piano”, hails from Saraburi and finished the final day four shots clear of second placed Wanchana Poruangrong, a

23-year old from Surin who played the most consistent golf of the week and was never out of the top three places. The third place was a tie between amateur players, 17year old Tunrada Piddon from Bangkok and 16-year old Kan Bunnabodee from Bangpra Golf Club, Sri Racha. The tournament was another example of the incredible array of teenage talent that Thai golf possesses at the moment and leaves Arpichaya currently top of the Thai LPGA order of merit table for 2018.

Young top scores at Pattana The Jomtien Golf Society Monday, June 4, Pattana - Stableford We opted for the A and B nines today and at 6870 yards the white tees were a touch too tough, so we were off the yellow tees in both divisions. It was not a big turnout but what we had were an eager bunch of golfers looking to have a hit on a decent course. The great course of Greenwood was our destination for the day, weather was good, no sign of rain and a gentle breeze to keep the temperature down.

We attacked the course from the yellow tees playing courses A & C. The fairways were in great shape (as always) and early in the day the greens were a little slow but as the sun got to them they certainly quickened up. There was very little traffic out on the course confirming that golf is very slow at the moment. Paul Smith took charge from the outset and was to lead the way all day, returning with a fine 35 points to put him 3 points in front of his next rival. Second past the post was Colin Stielow ahead of Glenn Smith in third and Barry Welling fourth.

It is hoped that the PSC will be able to get courses to advise of course maintenance programs in advance, so that golfers can decide if they wish to pay for playing a course that is affected by such works. Despite this, all credit must go to one Niall Stuart who shot a creditable round to score 40 points and take out

B grade convincingly. Also worthy of mention was the yet again A grade winner, the Seth African Rudy Regenass who fired 38 points off his 20 handicap, with Alex Field and Wan Makmul both having 37 points. Special congratulations to Wan Makmul who had a hole in one on the 12th hole (her second in six months!)

The powers to be on the day elected to play off the front yellow tees as it was anticipated that the course would be very wet. Surprisingly, the carts were allowed on the course and it offered plenty of run. The unfortunate part of the day was that all greens had been recently cored and putting was at best, plain luck! This issue was brought up back at presentations with Peter Grey announcing that he would take up this problem with the PSC, as it was stated by many players that they would not have gone if they had known that the greens had been cored.

FIFA’s video ref rooms all set for World Cup test James Ellingworth Krasnogorsk, Russia (AP) — Two cramped rooms in a Moscow suburb could make or break countries’ dreams of World Cup glory. This World Cup tournament will be the first to use video reviews, standard practice in many other sports around the world, but an abomination to some football fans who see it as killing the game’s soul. Deep in the bowels of FIFA’s International Broadcast Center, just outside the Moscow city limits, are two rooms decorated in blue-and-red World Cup branding. Along each wall are places for four Video Assistant Referees and 15 screens capable of showing 33 camera angles. FIFA hopes VAR will stop fans griping about biased, incompetent or corrupt referees — even though in the last two weeks, one Saudi referee was dropped from the World Cup after being banned for life in a corruption case, while a Kenyan assistant referee stepped down from World

(AP Photo/ Dmitri Lovetsky) Cup duties after being filmed apparently accepting a cash payment. “I don’t need to wait for VAR to guarantee people that referees are honest,” said Massimo Busacca, head of FIFA’s refereeing department, during a tour of the facilities. “Everyone watching the situation can even have another confirmation that the decision was correct, so they cannot complain any

more. Believe me, even without VAR, we have to believe in what referees are doing.” Referees, four to a game, will sit in office chairs along one wall with monitor operators trained to find the best camera angles for a disputed penalty or offside call. One is the chief Video Assistant Referee, making the final calls. He is backed up by one assistant specializing in offside, another who checks his colleagues’ work for errors, and one who keeps an eye on the live TV feed while the others are deliberating. VAR’s first high-profile rollout at last year’s Confederations Cup was plagued with problems but FIFA says it has worked on improving communications. “There will be graphics in the stadium and after the referee’s decision also images, so the idea is to be totally transparent,” said Robert Rosetti, an Italian former referee now overseeing VAR’s rollout for FIFA. Rosetti said VAR will make the World Cup fairer, even if video reviews break up the flow of the game. VAR would catch an offense like Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” handball against England at the 1986 World Cup quarterfinals, Rosetti suggested. “The target of VAR is justice,” he said. “I don’t know if we want a goal scored by hand in the last minute of the final of the World Cup. This can kill football, not a good intervention from technology.”

Montreal (AP) — Sebastian Vettel led from the pole to the checkered flag — and then some — to claim a longawaited Ferrari victory at the Canadian Grand Prix. The four-time world champion sped on after the checkered flag was waved one lap too early, finishing his wireto-wire victory at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve last Sunday to claim his third win of the year and the lead in the Formula One standings. “I was a bit confused. I told them I don’t think the race is over yet,” said Vettel, who confirmed on the counter in his car and with his team that he was only completing his 69th of the scheduled 70 laps. “Some of the marshals were already celebrating,” he said. “I was just worried that people don’t jump on the track and start celebrating. We’re still going at full pace.” Canadian model Winnie Harlow blamed race officials for telling her the wrong time to wave the flag. Formula One regulations say that if a checkered flag is waved too early, the race is over as of the last completed lap, making the results official as through 68 laps. F1 spokesman Matteo Bonciani said there was confusion getting the message from a course official to Harlow on the platform. Had any passing occurred on the 69th or 70th laps, they would not have counted, Bonciani said. But there was not, and Vettel picked up the 50th of his career, his second in Montreal and the first for Ferrari at the track since Michael Schumacher won three in a row from 2002-04. Mercedes was second with Valtteri Bottas — not erstwhile championship leader Lewis Hamilton — about six

(Paul Chiasson/The Canadian Press via AP) seconds back after never really challenging for the win. Max Verstappen was third and the other Red Bull car, driven by Daniel Ricciardo, was fourth. Hamilton, who was fifth on Sunday, fell from the top of the Formula One standings and now trails Vettel by one point, 121-120. He had been going for a record-tying seventh victory in Montreal and a third win in four races. “I’m the opposite of confident,” said Mercedes executive director Toto Wolff, whose team failed to deliver with an engine upgrade in time for the weekend and also botched its tire strategy in practice. “I think this is a major wakeup call for every member of the team,” he said. “Everybody needs to assess how to improve performance. ... Those marginal gains are going to make all the difference.” Starting cleanly, Vettel was pulling away from the field when a crash between Brandon Hartley and hometown favorite Lance Stroll brought out the safety car in the very first lap. On the restart, Sergio Perez skidded onto the grass but managed to straighten himself out and rejoin the race.

Vettel had no such trouble, leaving the jostling behind him as he steered through the 2.71-mile (4.36-km) track named for the Ferrari driver and Montreal native who earned his first Formula One victory here 40 years ago. “Grazie,” the German said to his Italy-based team before grabbing a red and yellow Ferrari flag and waving it on his way to the podium. “They’ve been waiting long enough for Ferrari to win here,” Vettel said. “Forty years after Gilles won his Grand Prix here, it’s nice to show Ferrari is still alive. It’s nice to become part of that story, hopefully a little bit more in the future.” Bottas finished second for the fourth time in seven races this season. The fifth place finish was Hamilton’s worst of the year, but he said his engine was giving him problems all season and he was happy he was even able to finish. “It could get a lot worse. I could have had a DNF (did not finish)” which would have put him another 10 points behind Vettel, he said. “I’m just grateful the engine made it.” Note: For more on the F1 Canadian Grand Prix, turn to Automania on page 20.

Nadal, Halep 1st pair of No. 1 French Open champs since 1992 Howard Fendrich Paris (AP) — Rafael Nadal and Simona Halep needed strong French Open showings to hold onto their top rankings. They did just that, becoming the first pair of ATP and WTA No. 1s to both win the title at Roland Garros since Jim Courier and Monica Seles in 1992. Nadal sits barely ahead of No. 2 Roger Federer with a 100-point lead of 8,770 to 8,670. They would have switched places if the Spaniard had failed to win his record-extending 11th championship last Sunday. “Today is all about Roland Garros,” Nadal said after defeating Dominic Thiem 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 in Sunday’s final. “I don’t think about the rankings at all today, no?” Alexander Zverev is No. 3, nearly 3,000 rankings points further back. Juan Martin del Potro jumped two spots to No. 4 by reaching his first French Open semifinal in nine years, and Thiem rose one place to

Marco Cecchinato made the biggest move in the ATP top 100, going up 45 spots to No. 27 — putting him in line for a Wimbledon seeding next month — after reaching the semifinals. At No. 72, he was the lowest-ranked semifinalist in 19 years. The 25-year-old Italian had never won a Grand Slam match before this French

Open, but he beat Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals after also eliminating players seeded No. 8 and 10. Halep, Caroline Wozniacki and Garbine Muguruza remained the WTA’s top three, but French Open runner-up Sloane Stephens went from No. 10 to a career-high No. 4. Madison Keys, who lost to Stephens in the semifinals, is now No. 10 after entering the tournament at No. 13.

lose her opening match at the French Open since 2004. Halep, who first grabbed the top ranking last October, could have been overtaken by five women if she didn’t at least get to the semifinals at Roland Garros. But Halep not only made it to the semifinals, she beat 2017 U.S. Open champion Stephens 36, 6-4, 6-1 in the title match last Saturday for her first Grand Slam trophy after three losses in major finals. “The fact that I could be No. 1 in the world last year gave me confidence and gave me, like, a little bit of relief, because I touched something, something big, something huge,” Halep said, “and I just had in my mind to win a Grand Slam after that.”

The GIS students performed at their best at the FOBISIA Games in Phuket.

Sarah Longstaffe Students from Garden International School (GIS) students made the journey to Phuket recently for the Primary FOBISIA Games. The students, from Years 4,

5 and 6, had trained very hard leading up to the Games and it showed in the results. Day 1 saw the GIS Titans win 69 medals in swimming and 100 in athletics. Everyone worked extremely hard in both the individual and team events.

GIS medalists pose on the podium.

Day 2 was the T-Ball competition and the students were focused and played very well, with the both the A team and the C team placing second. The sportsmanship and fair play shown by the pupils in T-Ball teams was something to be proud of. The final day saw all four teams place in football. The competition was tough with some games having to go to penalties to decide which teams had a semi-final place. The final evening saw the students enjoy their gala dinner, sharing memories of the last few days with their new friends where they showed the true meaning of the ‘Friendly Games’. GIS is based in Ban Chang, near Pattaya.

Nine thousand runners from more than 50 countries took to the start line for the 2018 Laguna Phuket Marathon on Sunday June 10 and even before the first strides had been taken, records had been smashed: Largest field of runners ever (9,000); the largest number of international participants (1,300), the largest ever marathon participation (2,000), largest ever half marathon participation (3,000), and the largest ever 10.5km participation (2,000). In the iconic marathon distance it was 2016 winner Koji Nishizawa of Japan who at the 10km check point was in the lead group consisting of Ethiopian Kisi Koniti Gerba and Thai national team runner Supit Chantharat. After a tough battle over the first half of the course, Nishizawa broke away to claim the Men’s title in a time of 02:44:16 ahead of Chantharat in second, with local favourite Jaray Jearanai (Thailand) finishing fast to take third. In the Women’s division it was Sabrina Polito (Italy) who got the better of a strong field of Thai and international runners to cross the line first in a time

of 03:30:27. Following his recordbreaking 2,215km charity run in 2017, Thai rockstar and celebrity Artiwara “Toon” Khongmalai, was back competing at the Laguna Phuket Marathon, and for the first time Thai running idol and author of “Homo Finishers”, Sarawut Hengsawad. A top-class Half Marathon field included Thai national team runners, Olympians Boonthung Srisung and Natthaya Thanaronnawat. Boonthung was the runaway winner in the Male division in a time of 01:13:08, six minutes faster than last year’s winner while in the Women’s division Natthaya Thanaronnawat claimed the title in a time of 01:27:02 ahead of Maire Nic Amhlaoibh (Ireland) in second. In a packed 10.5km field, last year ’s power couple Hiroki Nakajima and Tomomi Nakajima of Japan, on honeymoon at the 2017 race and overall winners in the male and female marathons respectively, returned this year to take out the 10.5km male and female divisions in times of 00:34:25 (two minutes faster than the 2017 winner) and 00:41:49, and then went

Southerners win a hat-trick of PCC Super 8’s titles

Southerners players pose with the Cup trophy after winning the Pattaya Super 8’s cricket tournament at Thai Polo Club in Pattaya, Sunday, June 10. In bright and breezy conditions, a change from the recent rain, Pattaya Cricket Club hosted the annual Super 8’s tournament at the Thai Polo Ground. Eight teams from all over Thailand competed in an 8-a-side format over two days. With two groups of 4 teams the top two teams qualified for the Cup semi finals whilst the bottom two teams played in the Bowl semi finals. Southerners, the reigning champions, were upset by a buoyant British Club who bowled and batted superbly in the opening fixture of Group A, however the latter were brought back down to earth by the host team Pattaya CC in their next game and when the Asian Stars comprehensively defeated the hosts and Southerners reasserted their authority with a victory over Asian Stars, it meant each team had won and lost a game. The group of death had materialised with everything on the line going into the final round of group games. The Southerners subsequently beat Pattaya CC and Asian Stars defeated the now deflated British Club as the two victors qualified for the Cup semi finals. Group B, although not as close, provided some very entertaining cricket including

the tournament’s first tied game between Chiang Mai and Asia United. The Royal Bangkok Sports Club secured two opening victories to secure a Cup semi final berth while Asia United finished runners up in the group and took the second semi final slot. The Bowl semi finals saw Navid retire 32 not out for Chiang Mai against Pattaya CC that provided the base for a comfortable run chase against the hosts and the British Club bowlers were too strong for Siam CC as they also secured their place in the final. The highlight in the Cup semi finals was Daniel’s 36 not out against RBSC from only 9 deliveries as the Southerners amassed a huge 100 runs from their 7 overs to win easily by 38 runs. In the other Cup semi final Asian Stars produced a fine all round performance to defeat Asia United who unfortunately lost a key batsman to a badly cut hand whilst fielding and consequently they could not achieve the required run rate despite Hansie’s best efforts. With much anticipation and the beer tent filling with supporters, the British Club batted first in the Bowl final. The Chiang Mai bowlers were exceptional and restricted the

batsmen to just the occasional boundary as the British Club could manage only 58 runs. The star bowler was Choo, a 17 year old Thai lad. In reply, Chiang Mai lost the in-form Navid early but he was replaced by Champ, another young Thai whose composure belied his age and his 24 not out secured the Bowl trophy and the Man of the Final award. The last game of the tournament was the Cup final between the Southerners and Asian Stars. Southerners elected to bat first and it was Heno who was the star performer with a masterful retirement of 32 not out backed up by Daniel and the captain Grove, as the Southerners posted an imposing 90 runs. Asian Stars were undaunted in their chase as Dimple and Darmesh dispatched balls to all parts of the ground. Both fell just before the retirement score of 31 runs but Bilal and Sam maintained the charge. The game changing over came when Daniel conceded just 9 runs in the sixth over and the Asian Stars eventually fell 13 runs short of their target. The Man of the Final award went to Heno whilst the Man of the Tournament award was given to the very impressive Daniel who had a fantastic weekend with both bat and ball.

Kemp leads international challenge at Phoenix Richard Talbot Thursday, June 21 sees the return of the Ladies European Thailand Championship to Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club. It was a year ago that the Pattaya course hosted the same tournament which was won in dramatic style by the 14-year old Thai schoolgirl Atthaya Thitikul. The event will be held over 4 days and will be televised around the world as the 120 golfers from Europe and Asia battle it out to win the trophy and a share of the 300,000 Euro prize money on offer. Last year’s global television audience reached 170 million as Atthaya, or “Jeen” as she is more commonly known, became the youngest ever winner of a professional golf tournament and the past 12 months have proved that her two shot victory at Phoenix was no fluke. In February she won the Asia Pacific Amateur competition in Singapore, and a week later she returned to the same Sentosa course to finish eight in the HSBC Women’s World Championship. This year sadly “Jean” will be absent from Phoenix as she attempts to confirm her place in the Thailand team that is participating in the Asian Games in Indonesia later in the year. However this does not detract from quality of the field that is being assembled for the tournament.

Australian golfer Sarah Kemp. (Photo courtesy Ladies European Tour) The 70 golfers who are flying over from Europe will include a number of players that are featuring well in this year’s LET competition. Australia’s Sarah Kemp is currently lying second in the order of merit, and is coming to Phoenix looking to confirm her status at the top of the merit table. She will be joined by Florentyna Parker, Marianne Skarpnord and Olivia Cowan who are also in the top ten, and will hope to enhance their reputations with their performances on the eastern seaboard of Thailand. International hopes will be further strengthened by the presence of last year’s runners up, Mexico’s Anna Menendez, and Amy Boulden from Wales who finished in 4th place. With such a talented foreign field assembled it would be easy to underestimate the strength of Thailand’s challenge, however there are a number of golfers from the home nation who will have a

real chance of success at Phoenix. Currently the Thai LPGA is half way through its season and several players are performing admirably and will press strong claims next week. Wannasirir Sirisampant from Nakomnayok is lying in third place in the Thailand LPGA order of merit and will be a real contender while just ahead in the merit table is Wanchana Poruangrong from Surin who is a model of consistency. But the lady currently leading the merit table, and the winner of the last two events, is Arpichaya Yubol. The 16-year old from Saraburi is yet another talented teenager that is emerging out of the Kingdom. The depth of talent that will be on show makes it impossible to predict a winner but it should once again produce a magnificent and exciting competition. Obituary

Brother Denis Gervais C.Ss.R. 9th June 1945 – 8th June 2018 It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Brother Denis Gervais C.Ss.R., Vice President of the Father Ray Foundation. Brother Denis passed away on the evening of 8th of June at Bumrungrad Hospital Bangkok following a long battle with cancer. June 9 would have been his 73rd birthday. Denis Gervais was born in 1945, the youngest of four children in the town of Louiseville in Quebec, Canada. He spent his early years living with his family but upon reaching school age he entered a boarding school run by an order of catholic nuns, of which an aunt was Mother Superior. The school was a private fee paying school, but also an orphanage for poor children and the high fees meant the orphans received a good education.

Following his graduation from university in 1965 Denis worked for the next twenty seven years for IBM as a systems analyst. Apart from his work with IBM in Canada, Denis also joined the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada, becoming a mentor to many young boys from poor and dysfunctional families. He also coached baseball and ice-hockey, two sports that he followed all his life. Denis first came to Thailand in 1983 to teach a course at IBM’s office in Bangkok and it was on this visit that he traveled to Pattaya to play golf, on one of only four courses available at that time. He continued to visit each year and it was during his visit in 1991 that he had a chance meeting with the late Father Ray Brennan that would change his life forever.

It was a year later in early 1992 that Denis arrived back in Pattaya for a ten week holiday. He planned to play golf and relax, but Father Ray asked if he could help with a small problem with his computer.

systems for accounting and sponsorships that would make life easier for the user and which are still in use today: Denis decided to take early retirement in 1992 and moved to Pattaya permanently, working full time for Father Ray.

Brother Denis with his children. During that ten week holiday he spent every day with Father Ray, not only sorting out that one problem Father Ray initially had, but also designing and creating new

In 2002 he took his religious vows and was ordained a Redemptorist Brother at St. Nikolaus Church in Pattaya, with his close friend Father Ray Brennan looking on.

He became Vice President of the Father Ray Foundation, as well as the Treasurer in charge of the Accounts Department. Denis leaves behind one brother and several nieces and nephews in Canada, as well as several hundred children here in Pattaya who will miss him dearly.

Brother Denis will be missed by all the children and students under the care of the Father Ray Foundation. The funeral for Brother Denis Gervais C.Ss.R. will take place: Friday 15th June - 10:00 St. Nikolaus Church Sukhumvit Road Pattaya

Happy Birthday Derek Franklin

One of his last visits to the children.

Brother Denis Gervais C.Ss.R. died the day before his seventy third birthday. It was Friday June the 8th and planned for the following day was a big birthday celebration, not just for his birthday but for all the youngsters living at the Father Ray Children’s Home, Children’s Village and the School for the Blind. There was no question that the party should be cancelled, Brother Denis wouldn’t have wanted that to happen, but it was also a chance for the children to pay their respects to a man who dedicated a quarter of a century to the underprivileged in Pattaya. Brother Denis visited the children every day, even when he could barely walk he always found the strength to visit, and usually carrying several packs of candy. The children saw him each evening when they returned home from school, and so it only seemed fitting that the birthday party should go on as planned. Birthday cakes were baked and shaped into flags and baseballs, his favourite sport, and they were delicious. And it would not be a Thai party unless there was too much food, and there was plenty. After the candles were blown out each child was called to the stage where Father Peter presented them with a birthday gift or an envelope containing cash, and they received it against a backdrop with Brother

Denis looking down on them. There is a local belief that says if you die on your birthday then you will go straight to heaven, but for all the good he did during his life Brother Denis is going straight to heaven, no matter what day he died. The funeral for Brother Denis is taking place on the morning of Friday 15th June at St. Nikolaus Church Pattaya, where he will then be laid to rest close to his good friend Father Ray.

Each child was called to the stage where Father Peter presented them with a birthday gift with Brother Denis looking down on them.

Thai & Canadian flags unite.

You are our hero.

The boys had a message to give.

Bogie Season 2 Turn your mobile phones off and enjoy Readers in Rayong will know where “Bogie Season 2” is located, and what it is. For readers who do not know, a bogie is a chassis or framework carrying wheel-sets, attached to a vehicle, thus serving as a modular subassembly of wheels and axles. Bogies take various forms in various modes of transport. A bogie may remain normally attached (as on many railway carriages and semi-trailers) or be quickly detachable (as the dolly in a road train or in railway bogie exchange); it may contain a suspension within it (as most rail and trucking bogies do), or be solid and in turn be suspended.

The Seafood station. So there you are, all the non-railway readers, now you know what a bogie is. Yes, Rayong doesn’t have to wait for the billions of baht high speed railway, you have the start of it already with two static railway carriages

(bogies) in a quirky restaurant called Bogie Season 2, close to the Bangkok Hospital Rayong. To bring you right up to date, if this is Bogies Season 2, was there a Season 1? Yes there was, but with a change in ownership it was decided that this would be an ideal time for a name change. The restaurant is in a “U” shape and as you come in through the main entry you pass a seafood display on your right, followed by a bar with Chang and Federbrau dominant, then a music stage, turn left past the railway carriages and then come up the other leg of the “U” with wooden tables and chairs. The middle is grassy. The new owners understood the need for a good menu, which is mainly photographic as not everyone reads Thai, English or some other alien language. In the food business, a photo is well worth a thousand words. With 14 staff in the kitchen, it came as no surprise that the menu was a full on one. The cuisine is comprehensively Thai, but with many dishes not generally seen in a Thai restaurant, designated as ‘signature’ dishes.

It begins with Snacks and Sashimi (generally around B. 120-180) and followed by their Seabass items, all at B. 399. Many ways of cooking eggs around B. 100 and then into Yum dishes (B. 160-220) and then Tum and Spicy (around B. 160). Fried dishes next (B. 160220), American fried rice (a ‘fast food’ is B. 90) followed by Soups and Curry (B. 160300) and Seafood (B. 200300) and Pork ribs in BBQ sauce (B. 189). We began with Three Kinds of sausage which was an easy entry for a Thai repast, one of them being an interesting green tea sausage.

A big fat River Prawn.

duck being a standout from my point of view. It had been an enjoyable evening, and we even managed to get our Thai friends to turn off their mobile phones while they tucked in to some obviously favorite dishes too! Bogie Season 2, 91/9 Moo 7,Klang Thung, Noen Phra Muang, email bogie.season2 @gmail.com, telephone 082 091 4994, parking in the restaurant grounds, open 7 days, 5 p.m. to 12 midnight. Mention Pattaya Mail and you may be eligible for a 10 percent discount and a free cocktail.

The colorful menu. I then tried their Bogie fried rice which was redolent with garlic and very tasty, and I kept going back to it between other dishes. One of the signature sea bass dishes was next, done in a very good batter and not too dry; however, the next dish was the one that I enjoyed most, being a crispy duck on fried noodle with three sauces.

However, Bogie Season 2 was not done with us yet – a cashew nut chicken came out next from the kitchen, very much like a sweet and sour dish, but not as sweet. We finished with a Federbrau and sat back to take it all in. We had tried numerous choices, including some signature dishes, with the roasted

Cheesy pork fillets Cheesy and easy, this is still a great dish for a hungry family of four. The original recipe calls for an oven, but you could (in a pinch) use a microwave oven, but reduce the cooking time. You can even use a covered wok on a low heat. For the cheese, I recommend you use one with plenty of flavor, I’d even suggest some gorgonzola if you cannot find a fully matured cheddar.

Cooking method Pound pork fillets until they are about one cm thick and then brown both sides of the fillets in a frying pan with just a smear of cooking oil. Place the browned fillets in an oven dish. Combine the cream, mustard and black pepper and spread over the meat and then sprinkle the grated cheese all over the top. Place in the oven on a moderate heat and bake for 30 minutes, or until the cheese starts to bubble. Serve immediately with steamed jasmine rice. Ingredients Pork fillets Cheese (grated)

Serves 4 4 1 cup cheddar or ½ cup gorgonzola Cream 1 cup French mustard 1 tbspn Black pepper freshly ground ¼ tspn Salt to taste
