Celebrate Arlington Heights’ 125th at the Library

his month the library commemorates the village’s 125th anniversary and its celebration of community with a special exhibit entitled “AHML – Adding Value in the Community.” When you stop by the library during April, be sure to visit the display case near the Dunton Street entrance highlighting the many ways the library and its staff members contribute value to the community through partnerships and volunteering. The library was recently voted the 2011 Business of the Year by the AH Chamber of Commerce for its commitment to partnering and sharing resources with local businesses. Here are some of the ways we’ve reached out to the community: • Staff members assume leadership roles in the Chamber of Commerce. • Spanish storytimes are conducted at the Arlington Park backstretch in the summer. • Tales for Tots storytimes are held at Mariano’s Fresh Market. • Small electronics and eyeglasses recycling programs benefit local nonprofits. • Programs for job seekers are funded by a series of grants from the Rotary Club of AH. • Programs celebrating the quasquicentennial are funded by the Friends of the Library.
Upcoming 125 Programs at the Library: Railroad Ties to Arlington Heights History Saturday, April 21, 2 p.m. / Register The railroad was the catalyst that spurred the development of Arlington Heights 125 years ago. Joe Piersen, archives manager of the C&NW Historical Society, will discuss the history of the railroad, its impact on Arlington Heights and how to access information on former AH C&NW employees. Book discussion The Graysons: A Story of Illinois by Edward Eggleston Wednesday, April 25, 7:30 p.m. / Register This novel was originally published in 1887, the same year as the incorporation of our village. It’s a fictional account of a murder trial with the defendant being counseled by a young Abraham Lincoln. You can pick up a copy of the book at the library and it is also available as a free eBook.
