PERFORMANCE NOTES crescendo dal niente/diminuendo al niente

pitch and rest of indeterminate length

All trills are whole-step trills unless specified otherwise with a flat preceding the trill. Trills begin on the beat and on the principal note.

ON BOX NOTATION Players should repeat boxed figures freely at individually chosen tempi until the next instruction. Dynamics within the box should be integrated with the repeated figure in all iterations. Dynamics outside the box apply to the overarching phrase rather than the individual boxed figure, and should be observed over the span of time for which they are notated.

Two general types of box occur in this piece: Box with wavy line: at next cue after the line terminates, players finish the material in the box before playing the next material (or resting).

Box with straight line: at next cue after the line terminates, players immediately stop performing the boxed material and proceed with the next notated instruction.
