MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Wellington and the surrounding areas have thriving small business communities, and the Greater Wellington Chamber is the core support for the diverse membership.

WW W W W W W

The heartbeat of the Greater Wellington Chamber is the Executive Director, Michela Green, and all of the individuals that create the Chamber. I am honored to be the GWC President from now through early 2026, as I work alongside our Executive Director, the Board, Committees and membership at large to continue and expand upon the success achieved prior to my stewardship.

I am often asked, why join the Chamber, or what does the Chamber do? While we all understand a chamber to be a group of local businesses, I have come to realize it is much more than that label. To better describe what I believe the Chamber “does,” I can only share my personal experience and hope you can find something relatable.

I joined the Chamber to simply learn what is going on in my community. What I received as a result of my curiosity was being introduced to a gamut of interesting, intelligent, passionate people looking to row in the same direction. I received access to a deep resource of information that is available to me at any time I need. I received the awareness of the importance in supporting local businesses. I have received an education of my own town that I do not think I would have ever gained had I not been welcomed by all the folks of the Greater Wellington Chamber. The Chamber has served me more than I had imagined, and I only hope I can reciprocate.

The Greater Wellington Chamber is not only as successful as its membership, but it will stand for you when perhaps your business life is not as expected. My message as President is to install the notion for both members and future-members to keep an open mind and join, and more importantly participate, without expectations of what a Chamber “does”; rather, let all of the possibilities unfold, and see where it leads.

I am looking forward to working with the insightful leadership and our business owners to keep the Greater Wellington Chamber as a reliable resource for you and your families. So I hope to see you at the next luncheon, committee meeting, at your business or the ever popular Winterfest and Flavors.

All the Best, Maureen Brennan

PS: My picture … I am a horse person (polo specifically) with multiple equestrian businesses, including Aqua-TEC, which is a training and therapy center for equine conditioning. I chose that picture despite the dark eye protection and helmet, because that is the “best me”—doing what I love and experiencing the special, uplifting vibe it produces.

The Wellington Chamber of Commerce was established in 1996, just one year following the establishment of the Village of Wellington. It was formed by a dedicated group of local business professionals, with Maureen Brennan currently serving as our president.

Considering the significant growth of the Western Communities, our rebranding initiative resulted in the introduction of our new name, mission statement, and range of services as the Greater Wellington Chamber. This expansion better represents our commitment to serving the evolving needs of the community.

The primary focus of the Greater Wellington Chamber is to highlight the unique aspects of Wellington compared to neighboring communities, thereby providing a competitive advantage to Greater Wellington merchants and safeguarding these distinctions for all residents.

The Chamber’s strength lies in the number and diversity of its membership. Both large and small businesses from virtually every profession are represented and influence the interests and concerns of the Chamber. Collectively, we accomplish what no other business could do alone, and we are only as strong as members allow us to be through their support.

JESS R. SANTAMARIA

After completing his MBA from the Wharton Graduate Business School and working with IBM in Philadelphia, Jess Santamaria and family in 1974 decided to come to our Western Communities when Wellington, Royal Palm Beach, the Acreage and Loxahatchee Groves had a combined population of less than 4,000 residents.

Jess and his wife, Victoria, were a young couple with three very young children who needed normal services closer to home. A few years later, Jess started planning the first neighborhood commercial development at the corner of Southern Boulevard and Royal Palm Beach Boulevard. In 1981, Jess brought the first supermarket, the first major drug store, the first medical center (doctors and dentist), the first bank, the first gasoline station, the first McDonalds, etc. Business was not easy, as Jess had to survive the three economic recessions from 1974 through 1993, as well as the 2006-2011 recession.

Together with the economic difficulties came opportunities. Working 80 hours a week, Jess and his wife Victoria have converted three projects into major successes: The Royal Inn Hotel (166 suites and guest rooms), Saratoga Pines and Saratoga Lakes (660 homes), and the “original” Wellington Mall.

In addition, Jess built more than 3,000 homes in Royal Palm Beach, Wellington, the Acreage and Loxahatchee, along with several other commercial developments.

Jess has been heavily involved in many public and civic activities since his arrival in 1974, among them: Palm Beach County Commissioner, District 6 (2006-2014); Palms West Hospital, Chairman of the Board of Trustees (1986-1992); Wellington Regional Medical Center, Board of Governors (2002-2020); Palms West Chamber of Commerce, President (2000-2001); My Brothers’/Sisters’ Keeper Scholarship Foundation (Founder); My Brothers’/Sisters’ Keeper Charitable Trust (Founder); Citizens for Open Government (Co-Founder); Crestwood Performing Arts League (Co-Founder); and Wellington Chamber of Commerce Winterfest 2021-2023 Venue Sponsor. Today, after 50 years in our Western Communities, Jess continues all his business, civic and community activities together with his wife Victoria and eldest son Chris, a local attorney.

SMALL BUSINESS BUY LOCAL WELLINGTON 2025

As small business owners, my wife Amanda and I have found that Wellington offers not only a vibrant place to run our businesses but also the perfect community to raise our family.

Together, we’ve built a life that reflects our shared passion for service, both through our businesses and in the way we give back to this town we are proud to call home.

Wellington is where our three children go to school, and as parents, we see firsthand the strength of this community—both in its people and in the opportunities it provides to young families like ours. From school events to local sports leagues, we’ve experienced the support of neighbors and friends who all want to see our children, and each othe’s children, thrive.

Our businesses, Go Green Dry Cleaners Wellington and The Bedford Group Insurance, are at the heart of how we give back to the community. Go Green Dry Cleaners isn’t just about offering eco-friendly services—it’s about helping our customers make more sustainable choices. We’re proud to be part of a growing movement to reduce our environmental footprint right here in Wellington. From reusable garment bags to plant-based cleaning solutions, every decision we make aims to benefit both our customers and our planet.

At The Bedford Group Insurance, we strive to provide personalized insurance solutions that protect local families, homes and businesses. Our goal is to build trust and offer peace of mind to our neighbors, knowing that they are covered in life’s most critical moments. We’ve partnered with Wellington-based

organizations to offer educational workshops on homeowner’s insurance and general financial literacy, giving residents the tools they need to feel secure.

Amanda and I have also made it a priority to support local charities and initiatives. Whether it’s adopting streets in town to clean or organizing clothing drives through Go Green Dry Cleaners with Habitat For Humanity, or sponsoring community events via The Bedford Group, we’re committed to bettering Wellington. This community gives so much to us, and we believe it’s our duty to give back.

Balancing our businesses with raising three children is no small task, but the rewards of seeing our efforts benefit the people around us make it all worthwhile. Our businesses don’t just exist to serve customers; they are a way for us to actively contribute to the greater good of Wellington. Every day, we strive to provide the best services while being role models for our children, showing them what it means to be engaged, responsible citizens.

Wellington has given us so much—a place to grow our businesses, a strong school system for our kids, and a community that feels like family. In return, we are proud to give back in any way we can, helping to strengthen and support this town we all call home.

AWARD-WINNING HEALTH CARE

From HCA Florida Palms West Hospital to Wellington Regional Medical Center, and an outpatient location from the gold standard of pediatric care facilities, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Health, Wellington continues to be a preeminent destination to meet health care needs both common and exotic.

Wellington Regional Medical Center

Wellington Regional Medical Center is a 235-bed community hospital conveniently located at the intersection of Forest Hill Boulevard and State Road 7/441 in Wellington. Since opening its doors nearly 40 years ago, Wellington Regional has kept pace with the growing medical needs of our community. It has invested in developing advanced and comprehensive health care services—from neonatal intensive care to hyperbaric medicine to some of the most advanced technologies in cancer treatments available today. The hospital is also widely recognized for its wound care and cardiology. In 2024, Wellington Regional earned the American College of Cardiology/NCDR Chest Pain’s MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award, recognizing the hospital’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients.

The Alan B. Miller Pavilion is a three-story, 103,000-square-foot structure attached to the north face of the hospital, transforming it into a flourishing medical complex. A towering achievement in innovative health care design, the Pavilion distinguishes Wellington Regional from every other hospital in the region. By incorporating the latest breakthroughs in technology, the hospital is increasing staff efficiency, fostering patient engagement, augmenting the healing process and improving the overall patient experience.

BUSINESS & INDUSTRY

Wellington Regional recognizes that the patient experience extends beyond the patient. Thoughtful spaces, complimentary Wi-Fi service and upgraded dining selections also provide a pleasant experience for family and friends. A stateof-the-art pharmacy and two eight-bed ICU step-down units provide support for existing medical-surgical services. Additional space is reserved for the expansion of specialty programs, including orthopedics, cardiology, neurosurgery and oncology. The hospital’s Ken DiLallo Level III neonatal intensive care unit cares for the smallest of newborns with the widest range of newborn conditions.

In addition to providing high-quality health care, the hospital promotes overall community wellness through free preventive health screenings, educational lectures and support groups. Through an unmatched commitment to patient care; continued dedication by physicians, staff and auxiliary; and an ongoing investment by its parent company, Universal Health Services, Inc. (UHS), one of the nation’s largest and most respected providers of hospital and health care services; Wellington Regional Medical Center is proud of the services it provides and looks forward to fulfilling the needs of the community in the years ahead.

Wellington Regional’s newest emergency department, ER at Westlake, is a freestanding emergency department at 16750 Persimmon Boulevard at the intersection of Seminole Pratt Whitney Road. It opened in 2019, and is staffed 24/7 with an ER physician and appropriate ancillary staff capable of treating general emergency cases from cuts and bruises to heart attacks and strokes, with the ability to airlift patients to the main hospital if needed. Its 11 treatment spaces include eight examination rooms, one triage room, three rapid medical exam bays, CT capability, digital radiology and ultrasound technology, and an onsite laboratory.

MOTOR VEHICLE REGISTRATION

The Palm Beach County Tax Collector serves as the agent for the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) for titling and registering all motorized vehicles, boats and mobile

homes (commercial and private), including motorcycles and mopeds (registrations only). The Tax Collector’s office also issues disabled person parking permits.

New residents should register their vehicle(s) and obtain a Florida license plate within 30 days of establishing legal residency, accepting employment or upon placement of a child in school. Automobiles and trucks must have at least $10,000 in personal injury protection (PIP) insurance and at least $10,000 property damage liability (PDL) insurance.

The DHSMV may send a courtesy reminder notice a month before your birthday. Nonreceipt of the notice does not relieve registrants from their responsibility to renew on time or exempt them from paying the delinquent fee upon renewal.

Current Florida residents can renew their motor vehicle registration online up to three

valid registration certificates and numbers issued to nonresident vessel owners by other states for 90 days. If you plan to use the vessel in Florida longer than 90 days, you need to register in Florida. Bring your out-of-state title and registration with you when you come to the Tax Collector’s office. Visit www.pbctax.com or call (561) 3552264.

In Florida, both freshwater and saltwater fishing licenses may be required. To protect our natural resources, there are some legal

minimum lengths and limits on the number of fish you may possess. There is also closed season on some shellfish and snook. To obtain a resident license for fishing and hunting, you must be a resident of Florida for six months. Residents 65 or older can obtain a complimentary hunting and fishing license when they show a valid Florida driver license or ID card.

Fishing licenses and information may be obtained at the Tax Collector’s office or at any state agent (bait shops, sporting goods stores, etc.). Additional information is available at www.pbctax.com, or call the Constitutional Tax Collector’s office at (561) 355-2264.

Hunting

A valid hunting license is required for anyone taking or attempting to take game or furbearing animals. Hunters must also pay a fee to the owner of commercial shooting preserves for the privilege of hunting game. There are many special seasons, legal methods, bag limits, requirements and regulations that affect hunters in Florida. Call (561) 355-2264 for additional information, or visit www.pbctax.com.

Marriage Main Courthouse

Animal Care and Control encourages pet owners to have a permanent electronic identification chip implanted in their animals. For further information, call (561) 233-1200. To review the Palm Beach County Animal Ordinance 98-22 in its entirety, visit www.pbcgov.com/publicsafety/animalcare.

NEWCOMERS’ GUIDE

Property Appraiser’s Office

Florida’s Constitution mandates that all property values must be assessed at market value as of January 1 each year. Market value is typically what a property would sell for in an open and competitive market— what a property is worth to a willing buyer and willing seller. By Florida law, only sales transactions that occurred during the previous year can be used to establish values as of January 1 of the current year. For 2025 values, we look at 2024 sales to estimate values. For example, if you sold your residence in 2024 for $150,000, that selling price would be used together with other comparable sales in our analysis of the market.

Homestead Exemption Services

In the state of Florida, a $25,000 exemption is applied to the first $50,000 of your property’s assessed value if your property is your permanent residence and you owned the property on January 1 of the tax year. This exemption applies to all taxes, including school district taxes. An additional exemption of up to $25,000 will be applied if your property’s assessed value is between at least $50,000 and $75,000. This exemption is not applied to school district taxes.

When qualifying for the Homestead Exemption, you will need the following documents for all property owners applying:

n Florida Driver’s License or Florida ID if you do not drive

n Florida car registration

n Florida Voter’s ID (if you vote)

n Immigration documents if not a U.S. citizen

Documents should reflect the address of your homesteaded property. For more information about the available exemptions, visit the Palm Beach County Property Appraiser’s website, pbcgov.com/papa, or call Exemption Services at (561) 355-2866.

Residential property owners with an existing Homestead Exemption can transfer a portion of their tax savings to a new residence. You can apply for portability when you apply for the standard Homestead Exemption on your new property. The deadline to apply for all new exemptions is March 1 of the qualifying year. Owners of non-homesteaded properties, such as second homes, may qualify for a 10 percent exemption benefit on the market value.

Local Business Tax Receipts are renewable annually July–September.

The Constitutional Tax Collector is contracted by the Board of County Commissioners to collect Tourist Development Tax.

State Taxes

The Florida Department of Revenue administers 36 taxes and fees, including sales and use tax, reemployment (formerly unemployment) tax, communications services tax, corporate income tax and fuel tax. It collects the money that pays for state and local gover nment services Floridians depend on, and the department continually improves its technology and customer service, so reporting and paying taxes is as convenient and easy as possible. For more information contact the Department of Revenue online at floridarevenue.com or at the Regional Service Center located at 2468 Metrocentre Blvd., West Palm Beach, or call (561) 640-2800.

NEWCOMERS’ GUIDE

Sales Tax

The minimum combined sales tax rate for Palm Beach County, Florida is 7%. This is the total of state and county sales tax rates. The Florida state sales tax rate is currently 6%. The Palm Beach County sales tax rate is 1%. Some counties, including Palm Beach County, impose a discretionary sales surtax in addition to the 6 percent state tax. The county tax rates can range from .25 to 2.5 percent, and are levied on the first $5,000 of the purchase price. The $5,000 limit does not apply to commercial rentals, transient rentals or services. Consumers pay sales tax and any county-imposed taxes to the seller at the time of purchase.

Tangible Personal Property Tax

Household goods are not taxed in Florida. Tangible Personal Property is assessed annually on business property such as furniture, fixtures and equipment at fair market value. The first $25,000 in value is exempt from taxation. An initial Tangible Personal Property Return must be filed to claim this exemption. Failure to file will result in the loss of the exemption and assessment of penalties. The Return DOR-405 is available to download on the website, pbcgov.com/papa. Call Tangible Services at (561) 355-2896.

Use Tax

Unless specifically exempt, merchandise purchased out of state is subject to tax when brought into Florida within six months of the purchase date. This “use tax,” as it is commonly called, is also assessed at the rate of 6 percent. Examples of such taxable purchases include purchases made by mail order or the Internet, furniture delivered from dealers located in another state, and computer equipment delivered by

common carrier. Items purchased and used in another state for six months or longer are not subject to use tax when the items are later brought into Florida.

No use tax is due if the out-of-state dealer charged sales tax of 6 percent or more. If the dealer charged less than 6 percent, you must pay the difference to equal 6 percent. For example, if the dealer charged 4 percent, you must pay the additional 2 percent to Florida. Complete an Out-ofState Purchase Return (Form DR-15MO) to file and pay use tax. You can get this form from our website at floridarevenue.com. If the tax owed is less than $1, you do not have to file.

Other Taxes and Fees

Florida does not impose personal income, inheritance, gift taxes or intangible personal property taxes. However, there are other taxes and fees that, in certain counties or circumstances, Florida residents may be required to pay, such as: convention development tax, local option tourist tax, fuel taxes, communications services tax, gross receipts tax, lead-acid battery fee, new tire fee, motor vehicle fee (Lemon Law) or rental car surcharge.

LOOKING AT BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES IN FLORIDA?

GOVERNMENT

IN WELLINGTON

Wellington’s founders possessed a unique vision: a vision of a planned community nestled between the Palm Beaches to the East and Lake Okeechobee to the West.

That vision has come to fruition, and the Village of Wellington now offers residents an appealing combination of a hometown feel with the conveniences of city living. The very best of restaurants, shopping, entertainment and recreation can be found right here!

Wellington’s local government works tirelessly to ensure that residents’ needs and challenges are acknowledged and addressed. As members of the community themselves, our government officials take the responsibility of effective and efficient governance of the Village quite seriously.

Wellington Scores an A+

Wellington’s reputation as a first-rate place to raise a family owes much to the exemplary public and private schools in the area.

From wonderful elementary and middle schools for the younger kids to high schools and local colleges that challenge the older ones, there is no end to the top-notch educational choices available.

The School District of Palm Beach County (SDPBC) is the 10th-largest in the country and the fifth-largest school district in the state, with approximately 171,000 students enrolled (pre-K through 12th grade). SDPBC has been recognized in recent years as a high-performing, A–rated district, according to the Florida Department of Education.

The Wellington Education Committee is a seven-member committee comprised of Wellington residents appointed by the Village Council. Generally, each member’s role is to monitor activities in Wellington schools by attending School Advisory Committee (SAC) meetings and reporting back to the Education Committee.

Additionally, the Village Council has approved in the budget the Keely Spinelli Education Grant. The purpose of the Keely Spinelli Grant is to assist Binks Forest Elementary, Elbridge Gale Elementary, Emerald Cove Middle, Equestrian Trail Elementary, New Horizons Elementary, Palm Beach Central High, Panther Run Elementary, Polo Park Middle, Wellington Elementary, Wellington Landings Middle and Wellington High with funding for programs, tutors, incentives, instructional materials and/or equipment for students in reading and/or math.

The total annual budget for the grant program is $407,000. Each of the 11 public schools serving Wellington will be eligible for a maximum of $37,000 in annual funding. Since the Grant’s inception, the Council has awarded $4.6 million to Wellington’s 11 local public schools, helping thousands of children succeed and

EDUCATION

excel. The Education Committee will review and approve all requests for funding prior to each school receiving grant funds. Allocated funds will be kept in a segregated account within each school. Any funds not encumbered by December 31 may be utilized by the school for allowable expenses during the current school year. Schools with unencumbered funds must identify the proposed use of those funds prior to receiving current year funding. All funding must be approved by the Village Council prior to disbursement of funds.

Eligible schools are required to submit a proposed, prioritized budget with the application for final approval. Schools will be eligible to utilize funds for consumable curriculum materials (study guides and/or academic workbooks, etc.), incentives including transportation to encourage students to attend after-school academic programs, tutoring, any direct educational purpose and for equipment such as computers or tablets, etc. Schools can also use the funds for personnel (tutors) to supplement a salary that is not already budgeted by the School District. Schools will be required to submit invoices for all expenditures by February 1 of each funding year.

The Education Committee also gathers input on issues that may affect children attending Wellington schools and reviews programs as requested by the Village Council. For more information on the Wellington Education Committee, please contact Chevelle Hall at 791-4118.

Wellington also offers adults the opportunity to learn through community classes available at schools throughout the county. Adult education is available locally at Wellington Community High School, 2101 Greenview Shores Blvd. Call 795-4910 for more information.

CHOOSING A DOCTOR: QUICK TIPS

When you choose a primary care doctor for yourself or a loved one, make sure to choose a doctor you can trust.

A primary care doctor can:

n Help you stay healthy by recommending preventive services, like screening tests and shots

n Treat many health problems

n Refer you to a specialist when you need more help with a specific health issue

When you are choosing a doctor, look for someone who:

n Treats you with respect

n Listens to your opinions and concerns

n Encourages you to ask questions

n Explains things in ways you can understand

When you and your doctor work together as a team, you’ll get better health care. Try the following tips to find a doctor who’s right for you. Ask for recommendations from people you know. Getting a reference from someone you know and trust is a great way to find a doctor. Ask friends, family members, neighbors, or coworkers if they have a doctor they like. If you are looking for a new doctor because yours is retiring or moving, ask your current doctor for a recommendation.

Check with your insurance company. If you have health insurance, you may need to choose from a list of doctors in their network (doctors that take you insurance plan). Some insurance plans may let you choose a doctor outside the network if you pay more of the cost. Call your insurance company and ask for a list of local doctors who take your insurance plan. Find out if your insurance company has a website you can use to search for a local doctor who sees people with your plan. If you don’t have health insurance, you’ll have to pay for health care out of pocket (on your own). This can be very expensive. For help finding insurance, visit www.healthcare.gov.

Learn more about your top choices. Make a list of the doctors you have in mind. Call their offices to learn more about them. The answers to the following questions may help you make the best decision.

Questions about the doctor:

n Is the doctor taking new patients?

n Is the doctor part of a group practice? Who are the other doctors?

n Who will see you if your doctor isn’t available?

n Which hospital does the doctor use?

n If you have a medical condition, does the doctor have experience treating it?

Questions about the office:

n Do they offer evening or weekend appointments?

n What is the cancellation policy?

n How long will it take to get an appointment?

n How long do appointments usually last?

n Does the doctor offer telemedicine services if needed?

n Can you get lab work and x-rays done in the office?

n If you are more comfortable speaking in a language besides English, is there a doctor or nurse who speaks that language?

Think about your experience after the first visit. Did the doctor and office staff...

n Make you feel comfortable during your appointment?

n Spend enough time with you?

n Give you a chance to ask questions?

n Answer your questions clearly?

If you answer “no” to any of these questions, you may want to keep looking.

NUMBERS TO KNOW

TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR MEDICAL RECORDS

Your medical records are yours, and you have the right to see them. If you are ready to take control of your medical records, here are some tips that can help you:

n Keep your own records: Make notes of your health care visits, and what was said. You can also make notes of your prescriptions. Keep your own records, and you will know what is happening.

n Get a full copy: Before you leave any appointment, ask for a copy. From blood tests to dental records, there is no reason why you cannot have a copy of your records.

n Make sure records are updated: Try to make sure that copies of your records are updated with new information.

n Be organized: Organize your records so that you know where they are. Have a system in place that allows you to find them quickly.

n Keep your records safe: Make sure your records are in a safe place. You want essential records safe from damage and from theft.

n Know your rights: You own the information in the medical records—even though the health care professional owns the actual document. Realize that you have control over the information.

n Have mistakes corrected: By law, you can have misleading or incorrect information corrected. If there is a mistake in your medical records, you need to have it fixed.

n Be on the alert for identity fraud: If you discover that your identity has been stolen, make sure you check for unauthorized medical procedures in your name.

n Consider records for legibility: Charts can often be illegible. If something in your medical records appears sloppy or difficult to read, ask to have it clarified.

n Consider setting up an online profile: There are services like Google Health that can provide you with a way to manage your health records electronically.

HOME REMEDIES

Turning to your doctor for every scratch or headache can be tiring and expensive. Home remedies can be an unexpected fix to an ongoing condition. Some household products have alternate uses that are as surprising as they are effective. Here are some locally grown fixes to some common ailments.

HICCUPS

Drinking water, holding your breath and even getting scared have been attributed as cures for hiccups. When those old tricks don’t work, try swallowing a teaspoon of dry sugar. It works by distracting the vagus nerve that innervates the diaphragm. America’s only producer of certified organic sugar, Florida Crystals, is located right here in Palm Beach County.

CHEST CONGESTION

With Florida’s pollen count, allergies are a common complaint of Floridians. When feeling congested from allergies or the common cold, try adding honey and lemon to a cup of hot water or tea. The ingredients work together to soothe the throat and rid the airways of mucus. Beekeepers are abundant in Palm Beach County and offer a variety of different honeys that would be perfect for a congestion-calming tea.

ANXIETY

When fighting off nerves, oranges are the secret weapon. Drinking orange juice with honey and nutmeg is known to slow heart rates. It works by improving blood vessel

function with an antioxidant called hesperidin, which is known to reduce cholesterol and blood pressure. Even the aroma of oranges is said to reduce anxiety. In Florida, there is no shortage of oranges.

SUNBURNS

Add sunburn soother to the long list of applications for milk. With so many uses, it’s no wonder this all-purpose beverage is referred to as the fruit of life. The next time you get sunburned, try using a cold compress of milk and water. The fat and protein in the milk act as an antiinflammatory while the cold temperature reduces swelling by causing blood vessels to constrict.

SEA LICE BITES

Any Florida resident or past visitor can recognize the telltale signs of a sea lice attack. The agonizingly itchy red bumps can drive even the biggest beach bums away from the ocean. Don’t let those little sea creatures keep you away. The next time you get bitten by sea lice, soak a sponge with a mixture of water and either vinegar or meat tenderizer. Then, gently apply to affected areas. These acids neutralize the venom in your skin to relieve itching.

EQUESTRIAN COMMITTEE

The primary purpose of the Greater Wellington Chamber Equestrian Committee is to promote, enhance and support the equestrian industry in Wellington. According to the Palm Beach County Sports Commission, “the spending of nonresidents, because of their participation in the 2023 WEF, contributed $351.7 million to Palm Beach County GDP and supported 3,364 jobs.”

GREATER WELLINGTON CHAMBER EQUESTRIAN COMMITTEE

Jane Garifo, Co-Chairwoman

Bobbi Rottman, Co-Chairwoman

Wellington has long been the flagship for the equestrian industry in Palm Beach County. Since Palm Beach Polo was founded in 1978, the equestrian community has created a unique character for life and business in Wellington. Wellington serves as an international competition destination for polo, hunters, show jumping and dressage.

The schedule is set for the 2025 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF). Starting on January 1, the 2025 season will feature 13 weeks of competition, 12 of which will offer FEI classes. Four weeks will be highlighted by CSI5* competition, including the Rolex Grand Prix CSI5* during week 12, and the Rolex & WCHR Finale Week. Other highlights of the Winter Equestrian Festival include the WCHR Hunter Spectacular, BrainJuice U25 Grand Prix Series, WEF Equitation Championship, Hermès 1.50m Jumper Series, the Adequan® WEF Challenge Cup classes, groom’s classes, a team hunter exhibition, USHJA hunter derbies, the Great Charity Challenge sponsored by Fidelity® Investments, and the annual Nation’s Cup.

In addition, Wellington is also the home of the Global Dressage Festival, which features some of the best dressage competitions in the country. It offers unprecedented prize money and draws top riders and horses from all over the world to Wellington.

of a USPA-owned “Sunday Field” that will serve as the permanent center of polo in America and set the standard for excellence in polo. That vision was first articulated by USPA Chairman Stewart Armstrong in an essay called “The Sunday Field” that appeared in the Spring 2020 issue of Hurlingham Polo magazine. The National Polo Center (NPC) enables the United States Polo Association to showcase its tournaments, develop American players, and sustain an environment that will retain and attract new players through the promotion of excellence. First-rate facilities including five fields, the Grandstand, restaurants, clubhouse, social club, swimming pool, gym and tennis courts create the hub for world-class equestrian competition.

The United States Polo Association purchased the core assets of the International Polo Club Palm Beach in Wellington (“IPC”). The USPA has acquired 161 acres from WEP Polo LLC and WEP Polo Operations LLC, including Fields 1 through 5, the IPC grandstand, the Pavilion, the Mallet Grille, the Seventh Chukker, the USPA Clubhouse shop, the Outback Field, the Outback facility, and the IPC social club and its facilities, including a swimming pool, gym and tennis courts.

The property is now The USPA National Polo Center – Wellington (“NPC”). The purchase brings to life the USPA Board of Governors’ vision

The WOW Polo Series is an innovative 10-14 goal women’s tournament series designed to elevate women’s polo and provide increased playing opportunities in South Florida. With Wellington being a hub for top equestrian disciplines during the winter season, the WOW Polo Series aims to create a platform for both seasoned and emerging players to showcase their skills and gain experience in the sport. Looking forward, South Florida WOW will expand its reach in other locations by being the template for which women’s polo events may be organized.

Despite the undeniable growth of women’s polo within the United States Polo Association (USPA), there remains a significant gap in accessible playing opportunities, particularly at the medium goal level. Currently, the Wellington area offers only two 22-goal tournaments, limiting the participation of many talented players due to financial constraints or experience levels. The WOW Polo Series addresses this gap, establishing a platform for women’s polo to thrive.

The Greater Wellington Chamber and the Greater Wellington Chamber Equestrian Committee continue to promote and protect the economic interests of the equestrian community in Wellington. We look forward to continued growth, and we will continue to enhance and support Wellington’s equestrian community and bring its economic impact to benefit the entire Wellington community.

CHAMPIONING LOCAL ECONOMIC GROWTH

THROUGH WORLD-CLASS EQUESTRIAN EVENTS

Wellington International’s renowned Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) continues to make a remarkable impact on the local community, both in terms of economic contributions and community engagement. As the world’s largest annual equestrian event, WEF’s influence extends far beyond the show jumping arenas, playing a vital role in driving economic growth, creating jobs, and elevating the cultural vibrancy of Wellington and Palm Beach County.

Economic Contributions: A Financial Powerhouse

The 2024 Winter Equestrian Festival generated a staggering $403.6 million in economic impact for Palm Beach County, marking a 14% increase from 2023’s figures. This surge highlights WEF’s position as not just a sporting event but a vital economic engine for the region. According to a report commissioned by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission, the festival generated $242.2 million in direct expenditures, including horse-related and tourist spending, which had far-reaching effects on local businesses, tourism and employment.

Enhancing the Wellington Experience: A Global Attraction With Local Benefits

Looking Ahead to 2025

W ith a focus on enhancing spectator experiences and expanding tourism outreach, WEF continues to bolster the local economy while fostering a deep connection with the residents of Wellington.

Wellington International’s commitment to both the local economy and community enrichment positions WEF not only as a premier sporting event but also as a cornerstone of Wellington’s identity and growth. As Michael Stone, president of Wellington International, aptly stated, “WEF’s role in boosting the local economy is undeniable, and we are proud members and supporters of the Wellington community.”

With its growing influence, WEF is poised to continue shaping the future of Wellington, creating opportunities, supporting local businesses, and enhancing the cultural fabric of the community.
