AC-CA Competition 2015 - Concert Hall in Tokyo, Japan projet rĂŠalisĂŠ avec Aude Lecinski - 2015
CONTEXT – Enter The Void 1. Takeshita Dori = Cosplays, Tokyo Hype, Life, village scale / Meiji Dori = Longest avenue in Tokyo, megalopolis scale / Togo Shrine Park = A neighbourhood scale park (very rare in Tokyo) and a still very active temple (weddings, receptions, prayer), natural scale. Quite a heteroclit and thrilling context, 100% Tokyo ! 2. Concert Hall = Public and Iconic Building – Can’t be another Tokyo Generic or additional collage (a.k.a architectural zoo) Maybe the real exception in Tokyo is the void 3. Why building underground makes sense ? Offers Public Space / Seismic + typhoon proof / Acoustic wise / Thermical (reduce heating + cooling equipments) / Excavation can be costly, but eventually the result is less expensive façades (= long lasting building) The void is the connection, 100% open and public, between the three entities (Meiji, Takeshita, Togo). On the west side of this parvis the park extend on the site, creating a new route to the Togo Shrine. A wooden bridge, and a torii make explicit the presence of this sanctuary. On the south side (Takeshita), the parvis is welcoming towards numerous pedestrians and bikes of this very much lively and iconic street. A concept store and cafe is set at the end of the street to create a continuity with the small shop typology while embodying the presence of the concert hall. On the corner between Takeshita and Meiji Dori, a huge underground automated bike parking system (already used in Tokyo -Shinagawa) aims to develop soft and sustainable transportation. It is sheltered with a golden steel canopy. On the east side, on the avenue, the drop-off area for taxis, and the access to the loading area which is actually a very discrete stainless steel plaque hiding a truck elevator. The main emergence is set on the north part of the site, and gives access to the whole concert hall complex. FONCTIONNALITY – Around the Rift This emergence is the main hall, very large and open on full height (15m), to allow exhibitions, projections, etc… It gives access to tickets sale counter and cloakroom. There’s also a small cafe with an outdoor terrace on the parvis. At the western end of the building, on the three top floors, the administration is opened onto the hall with large glazing (still with curtains for intimacy). The high-speed elevators and main staircase gives access to the underground levels and foyers. The concert hall area is organised around a « rift », a large white patio, bringing light and cooling to all the surrounding programs. On the north side, under the main hall, are located all the foyers and bars areas, connected with a waterfall effect staircase entirely open onto the rift. The large glazing are retractable, so during summer nights, the foyers are sheltered and fresh outdoor spaces. From these foyers, at each level, the audience can follow aerial walkways, giving access to the main concert hall. They can also reach small auditoriums / auditions rooms, located at the meeting point between the public and artists respective areas. The artists area is located on the south and west sides of the rift, totally isolated from the public area. The artist access is located on Takeshita Dori, at the back of the concept store building. On different levels, artists can enjoy a kitchen/cafeteria space, living / chill-out room, but also practice and rehearsal rooms that can open on the audition rooms to create bigger auditoriums for public representations or even reception spaces. At level -5, the dressing rooms and orchestra assembly area are located just next to the stage. A connection exists at the back of the stage to link the artists area to the technical area located on the north-east part of the site. All levels of the technical area are connected with the truck elevator : plant rooms, recording and broadcast area, stage storage and archives. All these spaces have a direct connection with the concert hall. FORM & MATERIALITY – Picturesque vs. Modern The projet is about the cohabitation of hypermodern infrastructures (underground construction, bike parking, truck elevator, etc…) and more delicate items, either traditional (torii, wooden bridge) or ornamental (padding, openings pattern of the rift). The main emergence on the parvis is the identity of the project, its representation at the city scale. The white concrete padding pattern is an obvious metaphor and explicit reference to the function : sound and music. It’s also a sensual and soft relationship toward the neighbourhood, creating a kind of friendly landmark. The zenithal opening of the main hall is made with inflatable cushions of ETFE membrane that continue the padding of the facade on the roof. Sun protection is achieved with a serigraphic pattern on the ETFE membrane. This curvy abstract pattern can also be found on various part of the building, it’s the central theme and the inner identity of the building. The huge white concrete wall of the rift is pierced with this pattern, creating thrilling lights and shadows on the foyers, but also in the auditions rooms and artists area. In the concert hall, the pattern is used to improve acoustics by variating the proportion and distribution of reflective and absorbent surfaces. In contrast with the ornamental adventure, materiality is very sober and hopefully coherent with japanese roots : white concrete, black slate (opus incertum), and golden steel.
