A new upscale Mexican restaurant has been the talk of the town, it is called Maestro and it opened in Old Pasadena
earlier this year. The chef, Daniel Godinez is a native of Acapulco, Mexico, his menu—inspired by a backpacking trip to all of Mexico’s 31 states— pays homage to the various regional cuisines of Mexico. Godinez’s specialty, chilaquiles, is on the brunch menu featuring layers of crispy tortilla chips, omeletstyle eggs, seven pepper red sauce, cotija cheese, sour cream, avocado mousse and fresh pico de gallo. The same attention to detail is reflected in their craft cocktail program with inventive concoctions that highlight mezcal, a spirit made of agave (similar to tequila) that tends to be smokier.

A real standout that helped spearhead Pasadena’s contemporary dining revolution is Union. Helmed by James Beardnominated Bruce Kalman, Union has instantly become a leading restaurant with one of the most famous faces behind the kitchen (Bruce appears on food shows like Chopped). An intimate, yet casual, 50-seat restaurant, Union dishes out imaginative Northern Italian cuisine with a California twist, focusing on farm fresh ingredients.

Equally decadent, Ración brings the Basque region of Spain (once home to the world’s best restaurant, El Bulli) to Pasadena, where diners can indulge in exotic dishes like housemade squid-ink pasta or beer braised octopus with dandelion salsa verde.

Lost at Sea is a newcomer to Pasadena’s culinary scene, it is the result of a former fishmonger and a former sommelier coming together. While the ambiance at Lost at Sea feels much more chic than a Chart House, Chef Tim Carey’s approach is decidedly classic and French rather than rustic. The restaurant’s wine selection carries just as much weight as the food, Santos Uy—who was Silver Lake Wine’s first employee and served as sommelier at AOC—assembled small production and natural wines.

An oldie but goody is 1960s institution Pie ’n Burger, a fun little diner with wood paneled walls and long, laminate lunch counter with colonial revival counter stools. People come from afar for their award-winning hamburger with cheese. Make sure to bring cash because they do not accept credit cards.

Should you want to tap into your inner hipster, Lincoln, in a previously abandoned, warehouse-ish building, perfected delicious things in a bowl (from eggy breakfast bowls to colorful shrimp bowls), with some of the best pastries (freshbaked cookies, scones, cinnamon rolls) this side of the Arroyo Seco. It’s the type of place where young millennials Instagram their meals all day long. We don’t blame them. Lincoln is #nomnom.

Beer enthusiasts have plenty of beer halls, pubs and even breweries to choose from. Most beer lovers start their bar hopping adventures at local haunt Lucky Baldwin’s, a British-themed pub that has served up thousands of beers (63 beers on tap) in Old Pasadena for 20 years.
As for whiskey lovers, there’s plenty of impressive digs to get you sorted. The Blind Donkey in Old Pasadena is a Cheerslike, saloon-style, neighborhood gastropub with exposed brick walls, open beams and a handsome, backlit bar. The selection of whiskey and Scotch is hard to pass up, though The Blind Donkey offers a slew of ice-cold, draft beers on tap. While not blind nor a donkey, The White Horse is a stylish spot with sultry design (think sexy red lamps, elaborate light fixtures), and the bartenders are always dressed in dapper garb. The bar features 15 craft brews (mostly Californiabased) on tap, though the specialty craft cocktails are perfect for nightcaps.

alifornia is breeding ground for larger-than-life annual events, Coachella in Palm Springs; The Oscars in Hollywood; and the Tournament of Roses in Pasadena. Close to a million visitors trek to Greater Los Angeles for the bucket-list affair that’s sensational, theatrical, thrilling and even life changing. 130 years strong, the Tournament of Roses made parades cool even before floats were motorized, and it gave birth to bowl games (post-season college football games). Visitors may never quite experience a mid-winter festival the same way again, and the Tournament of Roses takes full blame for exceeding expectations. Sorry (not sorry).
The Rose Parade has inspired and enlightened visitors for more than a century, and families have made it a tradition for generations. Right along Colorado Boulevard, and flanked by VIP grandstand seating for the best views (hint: reserve these early), the mid-winter festival has celebrated the best of Pasadena, where whimsical, floralcovered floats, massive marching bands, decked-out horses and other ornate participants parade for five and a half miles, led by a grand marshal (like George Lucas or Mickey Mouse). There’s a theme every year (“Our Good Nature” and “It’s Magic”), so imagine over-the-top, mindblowing floats in a visual storyline that reflects Pasadena’s flair for pageantry.
The Rose Bowl game is the Grandaddy of them all—it is oldest of bowls having debuted in 1902—in its 104th year, the Rose Bowl game takes place on Monday, January 1, 2018. The Rose Bowl immediately follows the Rose Parade, the two events occur each New Year. asadena has established itself as a destination for quintessentially-Californian annual events. Visitors can expect dozens of exciting festivities throughout the year, from intimate, sophisticated gatherings to full-blown, action-packed productions. Outdoor music festivals have resonated with several generations, from those seeking Woodstock nostalgia to Burners, and the hottest new ticket in town is Arroyo Seco Weekend. This new music festival takes place each summer in the natural area surrounding the Rose Bowl Stadium. Destined to become legendary, the festival is produced by Goldenvoice, the organization known for producing iconic festivals like Coachella and Stagecoach. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Mumford & Sons, Weezer and Alabama Shakes performed to thousands of fans, making history as the headliners for the inaugural festival. estled at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, Pasadena is more accessible than you would believe. The city sits pretty just ten miles (16 km) northeast of downtown Los Angeles, connected to Southern California by the 210, 134 and 110 freeways. When in town, the pedestrian-friendly city allows you to explore on foot, though shopping bag-toting visitors can experience a streamlined public transit system, shuttles, clean buses and convenient ride-share services like Uber and Lyft. Pasadena is serviced by many airports, LAX and Hollywood Burbank Airport being the most convenient. The newest way to arrive in style is via the Metro Gold Line, a 31mile (50 km) light rail system that connects Pasadena to Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, where you will find connections to other LA rail lines, Amtrak and Metrolink. In a recent development, Metro completed new light rail extensions to the Gold and Expo lines that have linked Santa Monica Beach and Pasadena, people no longer have to step foot in a car and brave traffic to go the beach. Many new rail lines are underway and will soon connect Pasadena to other parts of LA that have historically been harder to reach. The beauty of Southern California is not lost on Metro Rail, with the exception of the Red and Purple subway lines, our light rail trains travel mostly above ground. As for the two subway lines, those are

adorned with incredible public art installations that are featured in docent-led tours of Metro’s public art program. Taking a cab from LAX to Pasadena can cost upwards of $80 USD, this might be a perfectly suitable solution for those traveling with friends and splitting the fare or for business travelers expensing their trip. A more economical alternative is to take the LAX Flyaway to Union Station which costs $9.75, the luxury charter busses pickup at each terminal (arrivals), stopping at each terminal in the famous LAX loop before going directly to Union Station in Downtown Los Angeles. At Union Station, continue on to Pasadena by connecting to the Metro Gold Line or by using a ride share app. Hollywood Burbank Airport is a major life hack for travelers flying in from cities along the West Coast, the Southwest, and New York City. The airport is much smaller and deals with a fraction of the traffic that goes through LAX daily, making it an easier alternative. This airport is 15 miles (24 km) from Pasadena, it takes about half an hour to get there, a taxi will run you about $45 and a ride share app without surge pricing will run you about $15. This is a major hub for Southwest Airlines — Alaska, Delta, United, American and JetBlue all offer service to Hollywood Burbank Airport.
You’ll need a smartphone, preferably one that is connected to a data plan so you aren’t stranded somewhere without wifi. Download Uber or Lyft (or both) and create your account, make sure to enter your credit card information because these services do not accept cash—we recommend doing this step in advance of your trip. Now that you have the apps and an account, you’ll be able to use the app to get rides throughout Pasadena and Greater LA. Both apps offer a range of services, the most inexpensive option is to carpool with other people going in the same direction, the driver will stop along the way and pick up other riders. You can choose a level higher so that you are the only passenger, choose this option if you are in a hurry. There’s an SUV option if you are traveling in a pack, and a luxury vehicle options if you want to arrive in style.
Ride share apps are a convenient way to get around the city, especially if you plan to enjoy adult beverages.
