center, 500 restaurants and charming nightlife, there’s never a dull moment. A wonderful surprise waits on every corner, and even unsuspecting gems like city hall—one of the most visited attractions—is awe-inspiring (trust us; it’s striking). The dynamic dining scene is attracting gourmands from all over the country (restaurants constantly make cameos on television and film); historic hotels have revealed gorgeous restorations; and the art and culture scene rivals any major city in the state. While the wonderful tourism infrastructure makes visitors feel effortlessly welcomed, Pasadena is notable for its friendly, close-knit and proud community that ultimately creates the perfect city. For almost 125 years, plenty of well-known faces have called Pasadena home, including baseball legend Jackie Robinson, Playhouse District neighborhood

The Westin Pasadena

Near all the action on Colorado Boulevard, The Westin Pasadena offers California coastal cuisine and a central location in downtown. A favorite among business travelers, The Westin is a half-mile walk (8 km) to the Pasadena Convention Center. The four-star hotel’s amenities are impressive, though visitors famously swoon over the priceless views— and we’re talking panoramas from unassuming places like the fitness center framing mountains with floorto-ceiling windows and the pool deck with stellar views of City Hall.

Pasadena’s budget hotels and motels leave you feeling impressed. A highlight is budget-friendly Saga Motor Hotel on East Colorado Boulevard. It is a mid-century time warp that was designed to attract people during their westward migration along Route 66. The motel (portmanteau for motor hotel) opened in 1959, it is well regarded for its modernist architecture, and a chic, Moorishinspired neon sign. Its courtyard (heated) pool under swaying palms is a perfectly chilled-out gathering place for hipsters and young families alike. If you are traveling with others you may find their family room interesting, it features a king bed and two doubles.

nthony Bourdain famously said: “Context and memory play powerful roles in all the truly great meals in one’s life.” Pasadena shares that exact sentiment. The culinary scene is an inspiring paradise for palettes. It’s a breeding ground for emerging young chefs and the stomping ground for seasoned veterans. Restaurants in Pasadena are so original, foodies drive in from the furthest bounds

of coastal regions. With more than 500 restaurants, there’s everything you can imagine here. Fine dining. Festive brunches. Authentic Mexican. Creative sandwich shops. Food trucks. Vegan joints. Hipster hot spots. Juice bars. Bustling cafes. Historic mainstays. Undiscovered gems. A new upscale Mexican restaurant has been the talk of the town, it is called Maestro and it opened in Old Pasadena

earlier this year. The chef, Daniel Godinez is a native of Acapulco, Mexico, his menu—inspired by a backpacking trip to all of Mexico’s 31 states— pays homage to the various regional cuisines of Mexico. Godinez’s specialty, chilaquiles, is on the brunch menu featuring layers of crispy tortilla chips, omeletstyle eggs, seven pepper red sauce, cotija cheese, sour cream, avocado mousse and fresh pico de gallo. blends Modernist and Art Deco elements of Los Angeles with a rustic color palette and materials of Mexico. The same attention to detail is reflected in their craft cocktail program with inventive concoctions that highlight mezcal, a spirit made of agave (similar to tequila) that tends to be smokier.

A real standout that helped spearhead Pasadena’s contemporary dining revolution is Union. Helmed by James Beardnominated Bruce Kalman, Union has instantly become a leading restaurant with one of the most famous faces behind the kitchen (Bruce appears on food shows like Chopped). An intimate, yet casual, 50-seat restaurant, Union dishes out imaginative Northern Italian cuisine with a California twist, focusing on farm fresh ingredients.

Equally decadent, Ración brings the Basque region of Spain (once home to the world’s best restaurant, El Bulli) to Pasadena, where diners can indulge in exotic dishes like housemade squid-ink pasta or beer braised octopus with dandelion salsa verde.

Lost at Sea is a newcomer to Pasadena’s culinary scene, it is the result of a former fishmonger and a former sommelier coming together. While the ambiance at Lost at Sea feels much more chic than a Chart House, Chef Tim Carey’s approach is decidedly classic and French rather than rustic. The restaurant’s wine selection carries just as much weight as the food, Santos Uy—who was Silver Lake Wine’s first employee and served as sommelier at AOC—assembled small production and natural wines.

Lost at Sea

An oldie but goody is 1960s institution Pie ’n Burger, a fun little diner with wood paneled walls and long, laminate lunch counter with colonial revival counter stools. People come from afar for their award-winning hamburger with cheese. Make sure to bring cash because they do not accept credit cards.

Should you want to tap into your inner hipster, Lincoln, in a previously abandoned, warehouse-ish building, perfected delicious things in a bowl (from eggy breakfast bowls to colorful shrimp bowls), with some of the best pastries (freshbaked cookies, scones, cinnamon rolls) this side of the Arroyo Seco. It’s the type of place where young millennials Instagram their meals all day long. We don’t blame them. Lincoln is #nomnom.

NIGHTLIFE A

fter the sun sets, the after-hours scene becomes vibrant, offering a full spectrum of inspiring venues— from cafes with live jazz to legendary comedy club—known for down-to-earth, laid-back vibes, though you can also let your hair down at wild nightclubs.

Lucky Baldwin’s

Beer enthusiasts have plenty of beer halls, pubs and even breweries to choose from. Most beer lovers start their bar hopping adventures at local haunt Lucky Baldwin’s, a British-themed pub that has served up thousands of beers (63 beers on tap) in Old Pasadena for 20 years.

As for whiskey lovers, there’s plenty of impressive digs to get you sorted. The Blind Donkey in Old Pasadena is a Cheerslike, saloon-style, neighborhood gastropub with exposed brick walls, open beams and a handsome, backlit bar. The selection of whiskey and Scotch is hard to pass up, though The Blind Donkey offers a slew of ice-cold, draft beers on tap. While not blind nor a donkey, The White Horse is a stylish spot with sultry design (think sexy red lamps, elaborate light fixtures), and the bartenders are always dressed in dapper garb. The bar features 15 craft brews (mostly Californiabased) on tap, though the specialty craft cocktails are perfect for nightcaps.

Bartenders at The Speakeasy are experts at concocting delicious, creative and Instagram-ready craft cocktails. The celebrated, upscale speakeasy bar (with hidden entrance and a secret password) is well worth the hype with an outstanding cocktail menu, and you’ll find the who’s who of local socialites ordering inventive libations and mingling with other patrons.

Bar Celona’s Red & White Sangria

Also taking center stage in Pasadena is the number of excellent live-music venues, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find a place that doesn’t deliver good vibes all around. Spanish-themed Bar Celona (smash the words together for Spain’s liveliest city) is also a big hit for young and old alike, where live music and flamenco dancers amp up the ambience for a truly original night out. If you thought Pasadena’s nightlife revolved around historic beer bars and swank lounges, well...the joke’s on you. The Ice House Comedy Club was the place back in the 1960s, and not much has changed. An essential after-hours spot, the comedy club is busy almost every night of the week, and legendary comedians (from Robin Williams to Jay Leno) have performed live sets here. Sit back with a drink and laugh the night away.

f art is a window to the soul, then Pasadena is a glass town. With its fascinating art history, fine-art museums and cultural institutions, Pasadena is home to inspiring, engaging and important art, with the majority of attractions all within comfortable walking distance. Art is life, and life is good in Pasadena. Here, the world seems to stand still as visitors admire paintings, sculptures and exhibits that are both striking and moving, from permanent collections to rare exhibits (whether centuries old or contemporary). Pasadena is also proud to feature a distinguished, American Craftsman architectural scene, one of the most prominent in the world. The Huntington Library is chockfull of compelling artwork, focused on British portraiture (though you’ll also have to stroll the 120 acres of landscaped gardens). This worldclass museum is home to one of the finest British art collections outside the United Kingdom, where art lovers get up close and personal with notable paintings like Thomas Gainsborough’s The Blue Boy and Thomas Lawrence’s Pinkie. The library is equally exceptional, boasting a collection of rare, outof-print books, manuscripts and historical letters. Inspiring with art closer to home, Pasadena Museum of California Art features rotating, modern art exhibits that embody all things California. You can’t miss popinspired Kosmic Krylon Garage by LA-born Kenny Scharf, who ran in the same circle as NYC artists like Keith Haring in the 1980s. The

The collection also includes works by Picasso and Van Gogh, and was featured in the YouTube documentary “The Cool School”. Built in the 1920s, the storied Pasadena Playhouse is legendary for stage productions. History resonates within the walls of the 686-seat theater, where notable playwrights like F. Scott Fitzgerald

ome parents are opting for quality family time with enlightening, cultural discoveries that go beyond theme parks, crowded beaches and mass tourism. Thanks to baby booming, Gen-X and even millennial family members seeking culture-driven experiences for gratifying memories, the world of family travel has become big on enrichment. Pasadena gets a gold star for its modern family-

friendly infrastructure, where multi-generational groups explore a treasure trove of activities. Pasadena is family central, truly special for all ages, and brimming to city limits with bonding adventures, from fun museums to wonderful parks. Families go gangbusters at Kidspace Children’s Museum, one of the top attractions for young explorers in the making. The imaginative space is

designed specifically for little ones (from ages 2 to 9) who go hands on with more than forty exciting interactive exhibits. The experiences range from ball bounce stations to climbing structures and even a Digging Deeper Gallery for all things bugs. It’s a great way to inspire and educate kids with science, nature and animals. Teenagers go wild for Rose Bowl Flea Market, where they can find

With so many adventures, kids can work up an appetite. Pasadena is home to an array of family-friendly restaurants like Dog Haus Biergarten, which has the most popular hot dogs in town with toppings like bacon, fried eggs and hot pastrami. ome to 300 days of sunshine, Pasadena simply glows with perfect, oh-soCalifornia weather, and visitors effortlessly adapt to the exciting, outdoor lifestyle. From sprawling parks to landscaped gardens, waterfalls to thriving festivals, there’s no shortage of sundrenched moments, especially in the summer months when the days are longer. Anchoring Pasadena’s scene, the Rose Bowl is mecca for active folks. Erected in 1922, Rose Bowl is a masterful stadium built for hundreds of thousands of spectators. The Rose Bowl Flea Market, held every second Sunday, is a magnet to bargain and vintage treasure seekers, thanks to 2,500 vendors that set up rows of specialty products, antiques, vintage clothing and accessories. More than 100,000 fans pack the stadium for sporting events like UCLA college football, and the Rose Bowl is

home to rock concerts of epic proportions, where legends like U2 took the stage this year. Eaton Canyon Nature Preserve is essential for outdoor enthusiasts, complete with hiking trails, equestrian trails, towering canyons, excellent lookout points, wonderful wildlife and a seasonal stream fed by a cascading waterfall. A visit here is a sure-fire way to completely immerse in unspoiled, natural beauty. Visitors who like more dramatic views head to Mount Wilson Observatory, a 5,700foot astronomical observatory residing in the San Gabriel Mountains. Visitors roam the beautiful grounds, dazzled by a simple—yet powerful—scene of endless, clear blue sky. Warning: sunsets are addictive. Outdoor activities can also be experienced at the Gamble House, one of Pasadena’s most iconic attractions. A California and National Historic Landmark,

the Gamble House blends within immaculate craftsman homes along the Arroyo Terrace Neighborhood—though this 1908 standout has major star appeal. It was the on-screen home of Dr. Emmett Brown in the Back to the Future trilogy, and it is the subject of an upcoming documentary by Don Hahn whose previous work includes The Lion King and Beauty & the Beast. The threestory house museum is a blast from the past, a visual treat for architecture junkies and nostalgia seekers. Tours are offered every day of the week, on Tuesdays the museum opens the beautifully landscaped rear lawn and terrace for visitors to pack a lunch and picnic. The “outdoors” isn’t limited to nature, and it’s easily experienced with a stroll through Old Pasadena. From shopping to dining to a wonderful farmer’s market, this historic center is the heart and soul of Pasadena, best explored on foot. Eaton Canyon Falls

alifornia is breeding ground for larger-than-life annual events, Coachella in Palm Springs; The Oscars in Hollywood; and the Tournament of Roses in Pasadena. Close to a million visitors trek to Greater Los Angeles for the bucket-list affair that’s sensational, theatrical, thrilling and even life changing. 130 years strong, the Tournament of Roses made parades cool even before floats were motorized, and it gave birth to bowl games (post-season college football games). Visitors may never quite experience a mid-winter festival the same way again, and the Tournament of Roses takes full blame for exceeding expectations. Sorry (not sorry).

The Rose Parade has inspired and enlightened visitors for more than a century, and families have made it a tradition for generations. Right along Colorado Boulevard, and flanked by VIP grandstand seating for the best views (hint: reserve these early), the mid-winter festival has celebrated the best of Pasadena, where whimsical, floralcovered floats, massive marching bands, decked-out horses and other ornate participants parade for five and a half miles, led by a grand marshal (like George Lucas or Mickey Mouse). There’s a theme every year (“Our Good Nature” and “It’s Magic”), so imagine over-the-top, mindblowing floats in a visual storyline that reflects Pasadena’s flair for pageantry.

The Rose Bowl game is the Grandaddy of them all—it is oldest of bowls having debuted in 1902—in its 104th year, the Rose Bowl game takes place on Monday, January 1, 2018. The Rose Bowl immediately follows the Rose Parade, the two events occur each New Year. While the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game are the most familiar events, in the week leading up to New Year’s Day and in the days immediately following, the Tournament of Roses produces several ancillary events like Bandfest, Equestfest, float decorating and float viewing. Comprehensive spectator guides are published each year at visitpasadena.com with details and tips to best experience the Tournament of Roses, we invite you to visit the site and download the guides.

estled at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, Pasadena is more accessible than you would believe. The city sits pretty just ten miles (16 km) northeast of downtown Los Angeles, connected to Southern California by the 210, 134 and 110 freeways. When in town, the pedestrian-friendly city allows you to explore on foot, though shopping bag-toting visitors can experience a streamlined public transit system, shuttles, clean buses and convenient ride-share services like Uber and Lyft. Pasadena is serviced by many airports, LAX and Hollywood Burbank Airport being the most convenient. The newest way to arrive in style is via the Metro Gold Line, a 31mile (50 km) light rail system that connects Pasadena to Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, where you will find connections to other LA rail lines, Amtrak and Metrolink. In a recent development, Metro completed new light rail extensions to the Gold and Expo lines that have linked Santa Monica Beach and Pasadena, people no longer have to step foot in a car and brave traffic to go the beach. Many new rail lines are underway and will soon connect Pasadena to other parts of LA that have historically been harder to reach. The beauty of Southern California is not lost on Metro Rail, with the exception of the Red and Purple subway lines, our light rail trains travel mostly above ground. As for the two subway lines, those are

adorned with incredible public art installations that are featured in docent-led tours of Metro’s public art program. Taking a cab from LAX to Pasadena can cost upwards of $80 USD, this might be a perfectly suitable solution for those traveling with friends and splitting the fare or for business travelers expensing their trip. A more economical alternative is to take the LAX Flyaway to Union Station which costs $9.75, the luxury charter busses pickup at each terminal (arrivals), stopping at each terminal in the famous LAX loop before going directly to Union Station in Downtown Los Angeles. At Union Station, continue on to Pasadena by connecting to the Metro Gold Line or by using a ride share app. Hollywood Burbank Airport is a major life hack for travelers flying in from cities along the West Coast, the Southwest, and New York City. The airport is much smaller and deals with a fraction of the traffic that goes through LAX daily, making it an easier alternative. This airport is 15 miles (24 km) from Pasadena, it takes about half an hour to get there, a taxi will run you about $45 and a ride share app without surge pricing will run you about $15. This is a major hub for Southwest Airlines — Alaska, Delta, United, American and JetBlue all offer service to Hollywood Burbank Airport.

You’ll need a smartphone, preferably one that is connected to a data plan so you aren’t stranded somewhere without wifi. Download Uber or Lyft (or both) and create your account, make sure to enter your credit card information because these services do not accept cash—we recommend doing this step in advance of your trip. Now that you have the apps and an account, you’ll be able to use the app to get rides throughout Pasadena and Greater LA. Both apps offer a range of services, the most inexpensive option is to carpool with other people going in the same direction, the driver will stop along the way and pick up other riders. You can choose a level higher so that you are the only passenger, choose this option if you are in a hurry. There’s an SUV option if you are traveling in a pack, and a luxury vehicle options if you want to arrive in style.

Ride share apps are a convenient way to get around the city, especially if you plan to enjoy adult beverages.
