VIEWING PARTY BASICS 1. Make sure your television is in good working order. If you have a DVR, program it to record the pre-show red carpet events and awards show. Now you and your guests can watch at your leisure throughout the evening. 2. Focus on your “viewing area”. Create a comfortable viewing area in which all seats allow for a good view of the televised event. Bring in extra chairs, stools, ottomans, beanbag chairs, and oversized pillows for additional seating. One of the greatest treats growing up was eating in front of the television; so indulge your guests and make it easy for them to dine by offering surfaces and coasters for guests to rest glasses and plates while viewing. Place cozy blankets on backs of sofas and chairs for guests to snuggle as the evening goes on. 3. Prepare beverages and food ahead of guests’ arrival. 4. Welcome guests with a signature cocktail, followed by buffet style “easy to eat” fare. Tell guests to make themselves comfortable and help themselves to additional beverages and food throughout the evening.

SIGNATURE COCKTAIL – CALIFORNIA MARGARITA Ingredients  2 oz. simple syrup  2 oz. fresh lime juice  3 oz. gold tequila  2 oz. orange juice

Instructions Mix in cocktail shaker over ice. Pour into glasses and garnish with a lime wheel and orange twist. Makes 2 cocktails.

THE MENU We designed a menu that is both viewing party and budget friendly. Welcome guests with a signature cocktail, our pick is a California Margarita, and something to nibble on, Shrimp Shots and Fresh Guacamole with Tortilla Chips and Crudité. Follow this up with the main feature, Vegetable Quesadillas. Pace yourself and your guests with the menu so guests have time to leisurely eat throughout the 3+ hour show. As the show continues, award guests “Red Carpet” Red Velvet Cupcakes. And for the finale, finish off with popcorn, a staple for any viewing party!

SHRIMP SHOTS: Ingredients  large cocktail shrimp - cooked  1 jar/bottle cocktail sauce  garnish – lime wedge & sprig of cilantro Instructions Place 1 tsp. cocktail sauce in bottom of martini or shot glass. Place shrimp, tail end up, in glass atop sauce. Garnish with cilantro and lime wedge.

FRESH GUACAMOLE W/TORTILLA CHIPS & CRUDITÉ Ingredients (serves 4-6)  2 ripe Haas Avocados  2 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice  1 clove garlic minced  1/4 red onion diced  6 grape tomatoes halved and sliced  cracked pepper to taste  sea salt to taste Instructions  Cut avocados in half, remove pit, and scoop out avocado from peel. Empty into plastic or glass bowl. Mash with potato masher. Add lemon juice, garlic, onion, pepper and salt, mix thoroughly, and fold in tomatoes. Serve immediately with tortilla chips and crudité

VEGETABLE QUESADILLAS Ingredients  olive oil  4 medium zucchini - ¼” slices, quartered  1 medium onion, chopped  2 garlic cloves, minced  kosher salt  cracked pepper  2 pinches cumin  4 medium tomatoes, chopped  20 – 6” flour tortillas, 2 pkgs.  cilantro chopped – to taste  1 ¼ cup cotija cheese Instructions  Coat the bottom of a large skillet with olive oil and heat on medium flame. Add garlic and stir until it becomes translucent. Add zucchini and onion to the pan. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and cumin. Stir the ingredients together until they are coated with the oil and spices. Cook on medium until the zucchini begins to brown. Add tomatoes to the pan and simmer on low heat for 5 minutes.  Wrap stacked tortillas in tin foil in a 325° oven until they are warmed through, approximately 10 minutes.  In each tortilla spoon enough of the vegetable mixture to fill but allow for folding. Top with cotija cheese and cilantro and serve with a garnish of lime. Makes 20 quesadillas-serves approx. 8

RED VELVET CUPCAKES Ingredients 1 box Red Velvet Cake Mix (+ ingredients listed on box) 1 can vanilla frosting gold sprinkles Instructions Prepare cupcakes according to box instructions. Allow to cool thoroughly. Frost and “accessorize with gold sprinkles. Red velvet cake and gold sprinkles are two perfect ways to bring your cupcakes to Oscar level. Also make sure to select a fun and festive baking cup. To ensure a pretty finish, we chose Reynolds Stay Bright cups because the red velvet cake mix tends to bleed into the cup and many fade when baking. We used Duncan Hines Red Velvet cake mix, use your favorite. Top with your favorite vanilla frosting and dust with gold sugar (we used Betty Crocker Gold sugar Cupacke Gems).

As the awards continue, treat guest to a viewing party must-have, popcorn! We love the new Orville Redenbocher Pop-Up bowls – they’re the perfect “bucket” of popcorn for your home theater you’ve created. They are perfect for parties - they pop in just about 2 minutes and you don’t need to transfer to bowls for serving. Add some of your favorite movie theater snacks, e.g., candy - our pick, Cherry Sours.

ACTIVITIES  Create a Paparazzi Memory. As guests enter your home, trade them their coats for a cocktail. Snap each guest’s picture at the door. Instead of printing the pictures for your guests, load them up on facebook or your blog. Send out a note the very next morning to your guests inviting them to enjoy the pictures and join in on the “Morning After Recap”.  Print out voting ballots for each guest. In advance of the awards show, have guests complete their ballot. Keep a tally to determine who was right on the money with the winners. See last page for printable ballot information.

… and the Oscar® goes to YOU, for hosting a sensational party!
